- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, a new week.
- 0:15It's Monday, it's the 12th of August.
- 0:18And I'm so glad that you have tapped on play to invite me into
- 0:22your day so that we can continue reading together this really
- 0:27fascinating book of the Bible. And I'm afraid this book kind of
- 0:32lays bare one of my deep pet peeves.
- 0:35You know how each of us have something that really irks you?
- 0:40Well, as much as it's a dangerous thing to tell other
- 0:43people, I'm I'm going to fess up.
- 0:44I'm going to share with your friends.
- 0:46The thing that really irks me is when people say One Corinthians
- 0:51chapter 5 instead of First Corinthians.
- 0:54Now I know it's a very small thing, but it's the 1st letter
- 0:58to the Corinthians. It's not the one letter to the
- 1:00Corinthians, it's the 1st letter to the Corinthians chapter 5.
- 1:05So we say First Corinthians 5, but I've got to say I'm all on
- 1:10my lonesome. I've got my theology lecturers
- 1:14who say 1 Corinthians 5. I heard my Bishop recently say 1
- 1:19Corinthians 15. So you know what?
- 1:21It's just me. I'm just going to have to be
- 1:25bigger than this and say it's OK.
- 1:27At least we are talking about God's Word, even if
- 1:31grammatically it might just grate me the wrong way.
- 1:34How about you? I bet most of you probably say
- 1:36One Corinthians. But rest assured, friends, I
- 1:39will always say First Corinthians, First John, First
- 1:42Chronicles, First Thessalonians, Second Timothy.
- 1:45That is how I roll. So now you'll probably notice me
- 1:48saying that welcome to my world. But all of me aside, let us
- 1:53continue hearing what Paul has to say to his friends in that
- 1:58church in Corinth. You ready?
- 2:01Great, let's read together First Corinthians chapter 5.
- 2:16I can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality
- 2:20going on among you, something that even pagans don't do.
- 2:24I'm told that a man in your church is living in sin with his
- 2:29stepmother. You are so proud of yourselves,
- 2:33but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame, and you should
- 2:37remove this man from your fellowship.
- 2:39Even though I'm not with you in person, I am with you in the
- 2:43Spirit. And as though I were there.
- 2:46I have already passed judgement on this man.
- 2:49In the name of the Lord Jesus, you must call the meeting of the
- 2:53church. I will be present with you in
- 2:56spirit, and so will the power of our Lord Jesus.
- 3:00Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so
- 3:06that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be
- 3:11saved on the day the Lord returns.
- 3:14You're boasting about this is terrible.
- 3:18Don't you realise that this sin is like a little yeast that
- 3:21spreads through the whole batch of dough?
- 3:24Get rid of the old yeast by removing this wicked person from
- 3:29among you. Then you will be like a fresh
- 3:32batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you really
- 3:36are. Christ, our Passover lamb, has
- 3:40been sacrificed for us. So let us celebrate the festival
- 3:45not with the old bread of wickedness and evil, but with
- 3:49the new bread of sincerity and truth.
- 3:53When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with
- 3:56people who indulge in sexual sin.
- 4:00But I wasn't talking about unbelievers who indulge in
- 4:03sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people or worship idols.
- 4:08You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that.
- 4:12I mean that you are not to associate with anyone who claims
- 4:15to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or as greedy, or
- 4:21worships idols, or as abusive, or as a drunkard, or cheats.
- 4:25People don't even eat with such people.
- 4:30It isn't my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it
- 4:34certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church
- 4:40who are sinning. God will judge those on the
- 4:43outside, but as the scriptures say, you must remove the evil
- 4:47person from among you. Jesus, let your church be a
- 5:01place where Your grace rules supreme.
- 5:05As we go about living our lives partly in Christian community
- 5:10and partly amongst those in our lives who are not part of your
- 5:14Kingdom yet. But I pray that You would crack
- 5:18open our hearts to love and accept those who don't know You,
- 5:24to show them Your grace and Your mercy and Your love.
- 5:30And for those in our Christian communities who are struggling
- 5:33with sin, Lord, help us to gently shine the light of Your
- 5:39truth on their lives so that by your Holy Spirit, they could be
- 5:45convicted and turn back to You wholeheartedly.
- 5:50So Lord, we pray for all your people, those who love you, and
- 5:54those who don't yet know you. And we pray that Your love and
- 5:59Your grace would flood their hearts so that all of us turn to
- 6:06you, arms wide open, ready for your embrace.
- 6:10You are a beautiful God, and we are so grateful for all that you
- 6:15bring to us. And we pray all of this in the
- 6:18saving, loving and forgiving name of Jesus.
