- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: Hello and welcome to the M&P NFL podcast.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Connor Moore, that's Albert Brear Week 1 of the NFL season is nearly in the books.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, baby!
- 0:20[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, this was a interesting...
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: opener full of things that we will no doubt over react to, and that's the beauty of it, but it's funny.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: Now that we know that we tend to over react to things, the Monday after becomes, what is a true warranted over reaction?
- 0:39[SPEAKER_00]: And what are we under reacting to?
- 0:41[SPEAKER_00]: What are we not properly reacting to?
- 0:43[SPEAKER_00]: That's why we have a podcast.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's cathartic.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: You just break it all down.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: Albert, how is your opening weekend of NFL football?
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: It was fine.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_01]: I, as you know, just schedule a memory.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm old as hell and having to deal with all that, you know, but other than my injury last week, I, I'm doing okay.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know, it felt to me like there was like a little less, maybe it's that they opened on Wednesday, but it didn't feel like the opener had the buzz that we normally get off the opener.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_01]: And then the Australian game is just kind of a weird, there's a weird dynamic to that.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: And then of course, we come into a full Sunday, which, I don't know, I mean Houston Buffalo seemed like the best game, right?
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was important game.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I know we're going to dig into that.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_01]: It was there anything else that really, I don't know, captured your attention.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: Like it just kind of felt a little flat to me.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I love football and maybe it's that I was, I did not have a good Saturday night and that was such a wild atmosphere that contrasting like, you know, and we came to what's happening in Austin, Texas is probably maybe affecting things a little bit, but it just felt a little flat.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: Were you in Austin for the Ohio State Texas?
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: No, I'm really glad I didn't go.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: I was so jealous of my, I have a few friends who went.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I was really jealous of them at halftime.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: And then glad I didn't go to hours later.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: I was going to point out, you know, we both have rooting interest in top tier college football programs, we both played very competitive schools from Texas this weekend.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: And Notre Dame went one and no against the Texas school.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: I was state one and one.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_00]: But these are the breaks sometimes, you know?
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: same thing, yeah, I was saying things were match up.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: Rice Texas, you know, uh, just the same thing.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: McConee didn't make it out to, uh, another thing.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_00]: I look, I don't know.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: He might have been there, you know, he can, uh, he can time travel.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: He's an detective.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: Um, anyway.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: Let's get right to it because the first game, the main game, like you said, was Houston Buffalo, that had real SNF appeal, it had, you know, TNF appeal M&F appeal, but we get it at the 1 o'clock hour.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think just because
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe the rest of the world didn't quite catch on to the Texans hype or, you know, the networks didn't see it at the time.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe for good reason, because this was one of the worst games that the Houston Texans defense has played in almost two years.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: The bills win 36 to 31.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: What are your immediate takeaways from this one, Albert?
- 3:42[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think we're, you know, it again, like week one's a liar, like we could wind up saying a lot of dumb shit here over the next hour.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: That doesn't wind up being true, but I look at like the Joe Brady buffalo bills and it just looked a little different to me.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: And
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: I, like, and we can go through the numbers here, right?
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: So 409 yards of total offense, it's the most detects.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_01]: And the defense is given up since Christmas 2024, 36 points.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: The most Houston is allowed since Christmas Eve, 2023.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_01]: And tied for the second most points allowed over the 58 games.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: Playoffs included that Dimeco Rines has been the head coach.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: Um, this was, I mean, I think Buffalo firing on all cylinders offensively.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I think you're starting to see what they can become.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_01]: And this was something that a couple of people had pointed out to me when I was there over the summer was you don't understand how important Dalton can Cate is to everything that we do and if we can keep them healthy, then we're a different team.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: And of course, can Cate and DJ Moore wind up playing major roles in the way Josh Allen played.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe the most, like the thing that like I'm going to take away from this game is in that place that has not been good to Josh Allen the last couple of years.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: He throws the ball in the direction of Josh Palmer, right?
- 5:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know watching that play.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, I didn't see if Palmer said anything about it after the game, but it looked to me almost like he lost the ball in the lights.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I know a lot of people thought, like, and I think even the broad game broadcast called it a yellow throw,
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like it to me felt a little bit like Josh Palmer didn't track that properly and that left Camari last in her right there to pick it off right.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: So if it was ever going to get in Josh's head like that's oh no here we go again.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: It was in that spot with his team down and He came right back the next play and just fired a dart for
- 5:59[SPEAKER_01]: at the dead were slacitor again and who who by the way had not had a catch in the game.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and so I don't know, I just, I take note of that sort of thing because I think it reflects a certain confidence and a certain swagger and a certain aggression that Joe Brady wants us team to play with, you know, and like for them to have had such a bad night, not too long ago, a 10 months ago.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: where it just looked like they were short circling in every way possible.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: And the Texans were on top of them.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: To come back with a performance like this, I think is significant.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: And again, like it's just highlighted by how well the quarterback played.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: So, it's interesting, right?
- 6:46[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think you could in that game count five to six turnover worthy plays on Josh Owens behalf.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: And so, and this is how strange week one is, we'll get to the giants in the Cowboys in a little bit.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: The giants, I'm just using this in an example, but converted almost 85% of their third-downs, which is like one of the best performances of this millennium.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: And these things swing games, right?
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's just weird occurrences.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: And so if you're the Houston Texan's defense, do you look at this and say, boy did we screw up, or is it, you know, this was a disaster as Josh Allen game, but like all of the picks went through our fingers, all the fumbles just didn't go, you know,
- 7:35[SPEAKER_00]: I'm wondering if this is one of those tear down to the studs used in Texan's defense moments where they look at themselves in the mirror, or do does Matt Burke and DeMica Rines, do they go back to the drawing board and say, like we were so close on something's place.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: Now I know those guys are harder on themselves than any team in the NFL, but man, I'm curious like how pissed off and how on a rampage they come out the next week.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, and that's certainly possible, but I mean there was also
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, look, like, I, you know, Josh Allen's only sack twice, like, and there's that piece of it, like, there's a bunch of stuff that like you said isn't going to recur.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: Like, there aren't going to be too many games where the Jackson's past rush is contained the way the bills were able to contain it.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_01]: There aren't going to be too many teams that have a quarterback like that.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: And like you said, like there aren't going to be a lot of games where they're not going to be they're not going to capitalize on the opportunities that they had the way they did.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: So it sounds like a cop out, but this kind of does feel a little bit like, you know, maybe something more significant for Buffalo than it is for Houston.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think it was an exorcism for Alan certainly, right?
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the entire conversation leading up to it was how poorly he's performed in that building, how much the Texans have seemed to have been his bugaboo.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: And again, like the DJ Moore touchdown, for example, how close is Jalen Petrie to picking that thing off, right?
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: But instead it goes for a 21 or 22 yard touchdown or maybe it didn't log in that.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: But that is the breaks.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_00]: Those are the breaks of the game.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought when when Joe Brady and Josh and when they decided to go for it on that opening fourth down and let Josh Allen do the quarterback boot and last it or just got right into the backfield and pummeled him.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_00]: weren't we all thinking the same thing here we go like this this defense is just impenetrable but I think you know week one is a week of either establishing or taking down narratives and I think the one scary thing for Houston on the defensive front is like maybe you just don't look as scary anymore to anyone else you know yeah and and and there is that piece of it too
- 9:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes, you feel better or worse about CJ Stroud after that.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: That's exactly where I was going to go with it.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: I'm glad you said that.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: So here's my thoughts on Stroud.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I watched that game and I watched him very closely, it's weird that you book in the game with the fumbles, which is what everybody remembered you for the the in the playoff loss and kind of some of the big games leading up to that.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: in between those.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: I thought that was the best he's looked since his rookie season.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_00]: He threw some darts.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think it was that past to Nico Collins that set up the first touchdown.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_00]: That was a top five throw from Sunday.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought that there were a lot of moments, even on the final drive, right?
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: The 12 yard throw, the 18 yard throw, to get them into a
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: given where they were in that one and there was the gutting touchdown and everything like that.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I thought he played well.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_00]: The reality of this situation Albert and I hate to come back to this and I hate to make it a cop out is that your right tackle is 34 year 33 year old Trent Brown.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_00]: And if you're in a situation where another team has a very obvious key to pass rush,
- 11:05[SPEAKER_00]: how confident are we in Trent Brown to to stand up to this.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, boy forever for them, you know, and that's frustrating is that you can bring in.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: You can you can you can bring in Braden Smith, you can bring in David Montgomery, you know, you can draft Rutledge, but
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you know, I think that there were some tackles flying around the softseason.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_00]: Now, in defensive Houston, your Nick Casserio, you have the grading rubric, same with the meco reins, you only bring in Texans guys, if an offensive tackle is available on the freeage market, he's probably not your guy, right, I mean, he's probably not your attitude, all that kind of stuff, but like,
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: If that's the case, then get active in this past draft, where you had a guy like Maui Noah, and again, we'll get to the Giants Cowboys, but like dominant, right?
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: And get active, a bunch of those teams were dying to trade out, you know, go get that guy.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think that there's probably a little bit of lingering frustration when some of the same problems pop up.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_00]: And so for me, I'm less,
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: concerned about stroud, and I'm more concerned about the Texan's lack of, lack of aggression, but it's like your big, your big offseason move was like read blank and ship, David Montgomery.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_01]: And I think now I'm gambled on age at like, like, you saw you gambled with older players on the offensive line, Brandon Smith's gone now.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_01]: You know why I tell her.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what he's got like it's just some of the moves that you made We're bets on older players and tramp rounds with one of them.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: You know Now I I think the left side of their line like with Ursary and and and Rutledge It looks like they're gonna have a chance to get something going there.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_01]: I mean taking the two sacks at the end of the game
- 12:58[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I talked to Greg Russo after the game and he was able to get there in a three-man rush.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: You know?
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like, if you're in that spot, that makes it really hard for the quarterback.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they're in what third goal from the 18.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: And the fact that Russo is able to get to the quarterback when you're only rushing three and you're dropping eight in the red zone,
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, um, a good job, but we're so sad to me like he's like we didn't even really have to do what we didn't do anything It was just straight through a man rush
- 13:35[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what at the end of the day, that's where it's tough because that's where our concern lied with this team at the beginning.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_00]: And I bought into the Texans hard.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: Anyone who can pick up a magazine and purchase it can read about how hard I bought into this Texans scene.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: And so for me, I feel like it's even like a little bit personally like, ah, like, you know, they ended exactly
- 14:00[SPEAKER_00]: where they struggled exactly where we thought they were, but I don't know, on Stroud, I thought arrows up, like maybe diagonal up, like not all the way, but maybe like diagonal up on Stroud, I think it was the confidence in those big moments.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: The second fumble,
- 14:21[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I'm less worried about because it's the end of the game and it's like, you know, I mean, to have more, you know, what?
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: Because it was third down, you would have had like a Hail Mary essentially into the end zone to try to make it happen, which, I don't know, we all saw the Michigan game, so maybe it matters.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm less concerned about that one than I am, the one on the opening drive.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_00]: But I agree with the fans and, you know, everybody who's kind of saber
- 14:47[SPEAKER_00]: You just simply can't do that.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_00]: You can't put your team in that position.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know where do you come down on it?
- 14:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'd say like you saw what they want to be offensively and I don't think they had the run game fully working the way that they see it working, even though they went for 124, they had to run at 32 times to get there.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: But I think you see was between Montgomery and Marks what they want to be offensively.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's only going to make strap more effective.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think Jalen Nole making a big catch down the stretch like
- 15:21[SPEAKER_01]: losing Higgins to me was massive because they really thought Higgins was going to have a huge year.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_01]: So having another young receiver kind of step up and be a factor when it really mattered.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: you know I like there are there are encouraging signs there and you know I think piece you know there you you have to like you said piece the whole thing together and it's like okay like where's the offensive identity they want to be more physical match the identity they have on defense you saw the effort to to to to to to get that going
- 15:54[SPEAKER_01]: You saw like again, Nico Collins still has seven catches, but you're seeing like, okay, he's willing to go to some other guys and key spots, including one that they drafted pretty highly.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: And he's spread the ball around too.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like that's the other thing I'm looking at it.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: Now, 11 different receivers caught the ball.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so I,
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'd be optimistic that if the defense is what we all think the defense is, you know, and not, you know, not a group that, not, not reflective of what was, you know, there were staying about two years and still wasn't like that horribly bad, you know, wasn't like a complete train wreck.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think much less of the Texans than I did 24 hours ago.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_00]: I've definitely had a different relationship with money at different points in my life.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_00]: When I was younger, I really didn't think too much about where every dollar was going.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_00]: As I get older though, I realize that being more intentional with your money gives you a lot more freedom and it takes stress off of your plate.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_00]: That's one of the reasons I like Monarch.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: It gives me a really clear picture of my finances all in one place, my spending, savings, investments, angles,
- 17:03[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't have to piece anything together across a bunch of different apps.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_00]: One thing I'd really like is being able to actually set goals and see whether I'm on track to keep them.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_00]: Instead of just looking backwards at what I spend, Monarch helps me look ahead and figure out where my money needs to go.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: And the AI assistant is another feature that's really useful.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_00]: You can literally ask questions about your finances, like how much you spend on something last year, or whether you can afford a big purchase without dipping into your savings.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: Write your own money story with Monarch.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_00]: Use code MMQB at Monarch.com to get your first year of Monarch Core.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_00]: Half off, it's just $50.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_00]: That's 50% off your first year at Monarch.com with code MMQB.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to break this down similar to the way that we did our similar to the way that we did our preview episode, which is that Albert and I are each going to pick two games to kind of dive a little bit deeper on and then we'll do the one lineers at the end, don't worry if your team is in the one lineers this week, we're going to be cognizant of that throughout the season as we roll by the way the Texans have to get off the shnite here against the Cincinnati Bengals so good luck to them.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'll get us started because I think this is the underrated story, or I guess air quotes underrated story of week one, and it leads us to a bigger conversation here, Raven's 41 Colts 23 Holy smokes.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: I said this to my boy's data mark when we were doing our flagship show breakdown on Sunday night.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_00]: But Jesse Menter's defense, and I know you'll appreciate this reference, Albert, is like playing NCAA 2004 on PS2.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_00]: And the reason that I say that is because I used to play that game and there was a blitz that you would run.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_00]: where you took your safety from all the way deep in coverage and you put them right up against the line outside of the tight end.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_00]: It was virtually unblockable because the safety was so fast and just the way that the game glitched, the tackle couldn't go over and get them.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_00]: keep ran that a couple times like in that game with Kyle Hamilton.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: It looks so cool and when I think you notice the value of a great defense because the chargers without him, I mean played really poorly and lost in the season opener for sure.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_00]: I mean that's something to look at.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_00]: But really when the cults
- 19:31[SPEAKER_00]: seeded that when they went down 14 to 6, it was over.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_00]: And if you gave this team a 8 point lead, it was insurmountable.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: That's how good that defenses and Derek Henry had a lot to do with that, we could talk about it.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_00]: But when we talk about,
- 19:48[SPEAKER_00]: The totality of a coaching staff having an impact on week one, Declan Doyle, Lamar Jackson, under center more than he has been in his entire career in one game, the impact that he had on that offense, Jesse Minner, the impact that he had on that defense, I feel good about the fact that I had them, I believe as a final 14, and man, I mean, yeah, it's just a dressing down to the cults that was.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_01]: Man, I honestly, like so with them,
- 20:17[SPEAKER_01]: I had a couple coaches tell me, um, look out for them, you know, it's going to be really, really good.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I, I tried to like, you know, you try to bank all these things that, you know, you talk to people about.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember, and I think this is one of the reasons why John Harbaga fired was, they felt like going into last year, like, we have a roster, this is good as we've had in the last 25 years.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_01]: And they won two Super Bowl as a course, right?
- 20:47[SPEAKER_01]: The expectation was sky high last year.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, Lamar gets hurt a few different things go wrong and they make the coaching change.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_01]: But the core of that team is still there, you know, and the core of like what they were so excited about is still in place.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_01]: And it was just interesting talking to some people there about how schematically.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_01]: They had gotten away from some of the stuff that Mike McDonald was doing two years ago or three years ago now in 2023 when the Ravens were so good and now they're coming back to it right and you're seeing some of the three safety looks that you saw in Seattle you're seeing where it's really difficult to beat them over the top now.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_01]: You know, based on what they're able to bring to the table with Kyle Hamilton and Malachi star supporting in the run game, everything that the Ravens are.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_01]: It was all the and the coolest thing about it and I wrote this, I talked a little more after the game is there is a new field of that place and this the new coaching staff is very detailed on what they're doing and I think it's showed up in spots like there was a bootleg.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_01]: in rhythm and how well executed that all was.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: And I just think they've sort of changed enough
- 22:31[SPEAKER_01]: But they 100% maintain to the always happen.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_01]: And that's the cool thing about it is the identity of the team as it changed at all.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I think you see it in how Derek Henry played.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: I think you see it in how they're deploying Lamar Jackson.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think you see it in how they got the most out of the guys that they have.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: And to have down the line guys like Chris Moore contributing, the way that they did.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_00]: the the the development they've gotten across the roster they guy on a I mean you know really played really well but I will say that
- 23:14[SPEAKER_00]: I was blown away by even like Simpson and just front to back how great this Raven's offensive lime was.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they were playing Simpson.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_00]: I was watching like he blocked three guys on one of Derek Henry's long runs in three very different positions, but the Lamar of it all before we pivot quick to the Colts is
- 23:35[SPEAKER_00]: It must have, it must be immensely frustrating for him because you come into the league and you were great at Louisville and then, you know, everyone says you're a wider receiver.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_00]: And then even the Ravens offensively when, when they designed that and John Harbour was right when he told us that and we talked about this at, at the Giants facility, it did change football.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_00]: It changed the way the teams approach football.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_00]: But I think over time, it's understandable that Lamar felt pigeon hold by the Greg Roman offense, right?
- 24:07[SPEAKER_00]: And then you bring in Todd Munkin and it opens it up a little bit more.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_00]: And then Lamar Jackson wins an MVP and probably should have won another one.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_00]: But now you just put Lamar Jackson in a Ben Johnson offense and he's got him explosive, right?
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: And so it's one of those things that Lamar is like, yeah, like just, you know, put me in, you know, put me in a Ben Johnson offense, put me in a Sean McVey offense, put me in a Kyle Shannon offense, like I can do it, you know, this idea that like I'm just a totally abstract quarterback that can't,
- 24:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's just it though.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think you got to it.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's like Greg Roman like came in in his second year to build a run game for him.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_01]: Todd Monkin came in in what would that have been year or five for him and put in a past game to marry with that run game.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, I think what Declan Doyle is doing is adding the detail and the nuance and the complexity to all that, you know,
- 25:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's sound like, I mean, to me at least, well, I, I noticed Lamar had shouted out Declan, he's like, said shout out to Declan, to Declan, to Declan and the press conference or whatever.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, his quote to me was, hold on, I'll pull it up.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_01]: He goes, yeah, he goes, his mind is out of this world.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_01]: His mind is out of this world, man.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_01]: Shout out to Declan again.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_01]: So, I mean, it is, it is, it's just the evolution of it like that, and again, like this is one of the things I think the rate is really well is
- 25:48[SPEAKER_01]: a lot, there's a simplicity to do with so many things that they do, and, you know, I think like it's I always say like you know so much of what the Ravens do is stuff you could explain to your to your role, you know, and so like one of them would be the investment in tight ends as well.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's like simple stuff like that, you know, and in this case, like I think the coordinator changes and this, you know, I think plays into how Jesse was trained to think of it because Jesse came up in that system.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, where's the next level of Lamar Jackson's game, Tone Walk?
- 26:35[SPEAKER_01]: And they honestly, they were surprised that they were going to be able to get Declan Doyle when it happened, and this is exactly why.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: Like, they felt like Declan Doyle could add the detail in the complexity of the offense after, you know, again, Greg Roman gave him the wrong game and Todd Monk and developed him as a passer.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_00]: What do you make?
- 26:55[SPEAKER_00]: Are you panicking about the cults?
- 26:59[SPEAKER_01]: They're supposed to endude.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I just, that, that's, that's the thing.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I think.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm looking at it, you know, and you're lying on Keenan Allen in week one, the way they are, you know, I think they have to be judicious with Jonathan Taylor, you know, he's in what year seven now and he's got a lot of mileage on his legs.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: So I think, you know, it would be good if, you know, you had him in tandem with somebody.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_01]: He took every carry by a running back yesterday.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and then just the defense, I think they have one of the best offensive coaches in football.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_01]: And like, I just, I don't know about the linebackers.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_01]: I,
- 27:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think if they have an injury or two on defense, it could get worse, you know, I just think like so I'm not jamming on the panic button, but I'll say this and we'll get to them in a bit.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like in that division, I feel better about Jacksonville than I do Andy.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, I mean, there's no question about that.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and Houston goes without saying.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_01]: So now, I mean, where are you at if you're the cults?
- 28:11[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's not time to panic, but again, like I think, you know, finding a way to stay healthy so we're really, really important for them.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_00]: Here's something that bothered me and then we'll move on now to your game.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: The first snap of the game, you know, if you're the cults,
- 28:30[SPEAKER_00]: you know that Declan Doyle is the offensive coordinator of the Ravens, and what's Declan Doyle going to make Lamar Jackson do?
- 28:40[SPEAKER_00]: Go where?
- 28:41[SPEAKER_00]: Under center, right?
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: And it was the most under center synapse that Lamar's ever taken in his career.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_01]: I did not know that by the way, that's a cool set.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_00]: Wild, isn't it?
- 28:50[SPEAKER_00]: And so what the Ravens do,
- 28:54[SPEAKER_00]: is they break the huddle and they broke it with pace, right?
- 28:58[SPEAKER_00]: So the first nap Lamar gets out there that he calls the play and then boom, they're at the line.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_00]: The cold start freaking out defensively.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's moving around.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody's stationary.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone's trying to shift now to match the personnel.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_00]: The ravens don't give them any time and they just snap the ball.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's sort of like, you know, here's the, you know, what were you reading the off, what is it in school.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_00]: We give you the off the summer reading list.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_00]: And then we're going to have a pop quiz on the first day.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, did you read catcher the rire not, you know, we're going to find out like, and and I felt like not that it was the most obvious play called the Declan Doyle was going to come out in, but.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_00]: Ben Johnson, that was such a big, under-center, you know, play action kind of offense like that was the tone center for them and then a bunch of those guys in that coordinator school They love that sugar huddle that expedited huddle you were lost on that first play the game and then you know this defense you poured so many resources into the secondary
- 30:01[SPEAKER_00]: to the point where you're not going to have your first round pick this year.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_00]: If you had adventure, guess Albert, how many pass breakups by the cold second dairy against the Baltimore Ravens and week one?
- 30:14[SPEAKER_01]: Daddy, I'm going to say one.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_00]: Zero.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_01]: So I was going to say zero.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_01]: I was going to say zero, but then I was like the answer is zero.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_01]: He's not going to you and you would just tell me, but it was actually
- 30:30[SPEAKER_00]: Give me one of your games, Albert.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_00]: Let's keep this train rolling.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so like the Giants and the Cowboys.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, let's go.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: I, so this really stood out.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_01]: So they've taken a beating for hiring Matt Naggi.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think it's a really good offensive coach.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: And I was reminded when we were there.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_01]: Did you know Matt Naggi has never just been a play caller before?
- 30:58[SPEAKER_01]: This is the first time he's ever just been a play caller.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_01]: He's been a play call before, but he was a head coach.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_01]: Right, never just had the chance to call plays, because when he was in Kansas City, it was always Andy Reed-Con plays.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_01]: And he did two tours there as offensive coordinator.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_01]: And I think sometimes we get so caught up and finding the next hot thing, right, whatever, that here we are.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like we, I think sometimes people act as if experience doesn't matter and there was that shot of Matt nagging Greg Roman, but almost turned into a meme in game, right?
- 31:40[SPEAKER_01]: And do you know how much experience there is with those two?
- 31:44[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, you have Brian Callahan beyond that you have Willie Taggart beyond that and like I just, I just look at it like it's like,
- 31:54[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so everybody's looking for the next 30 year old to run your offense, but that's a lot of experience and a lot of ideas that are going into what the giants are doing and a lot of know how and what works and what doesn't work in the NFL and you're giving that to your young quarterback and.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I, I thought that look good.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think DeNard Wilson was a logical hire for John Arba as as defensive coordinator.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_01]: And again, like I think because DeNard wasn't there the last couple of years and Baltimore with him, they go back to some of the more too high, you know, like the the old Mike McDonald Baltimore Ravens defense, so you see some of that.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and they have like the monstars, you know, and the front seven, which is like you really start.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, our velvety is making a play right away.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean, the beginning of the game, and you can really kind of feel the height and size and length there.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_01]: But here's here's here here, here are the numbers that I thought, but to me, like really stood out, right?
- 32:56[SPEAKER_01]: So the Giants rushing yards, 165 the Dallas is 69.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_01]: Jackson Dart integral in the run game.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_01]: 54 yards and 11 carries 44 of them on nine called runs.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_01]: The giants had multiple first downs on all seven of their possessions.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_01]: Think about that.
- 33:17[SPEAKER_01]: Not multiple first downs on all seven of their possessions.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_01]: And then the final possession.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_01]: They were able to churn out four downs and end the game with a ball, you know, and they threw for two of those four first downs.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_01]: So while they did a stabster, their identity in the run game, they were aggressive and finishing the game, and that showed some some trust in Jackson Dart.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I think Dart looked in control.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_01]: And then I mean, like defensively, it sure looked like, you know, there's something there, you know, there's something there and I don't know, I just thought all the way around again, you know, week one and I'm going to say this 15 more times week one can be a liar, but
- 34:10[SPEAKER_01]: Like that felt like a John Harbot team and there's a lot to it that just to me at least like looks like, all right, like this team is going to, maybe they don't, maybe they make the playoffs, maybe they don't, but they're going to be in it for the long haul.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_00]: I was surprised at how often they were able to get Dallas into third down.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: That was my concern.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_00]: I said it a million times.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_00]: Giants fans are sick of hearing it.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_00]: How do you get to the place where you're, where you're vented past Rush, connection with the title of two?
- 34:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_00]: Cave on Tipito played a decent amount of defensive tackle in this game.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I guess what I didn't consider is like, you have all these space-eaters that are ruling the league right now, like Dexter did or Vita Veda did.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_00]: What if Tidado's superpowers that he can bump down and he's just faster than any of the guards that he's He's playing against and maybe he's found a little bit more of a rhythm and a space where he is I was I was you know, here's something like we like we mentioned right The giants aren't going to convert 85% of the third downs in every game
- 35:19[SPEAKER_00]: And so you would imagine that there's some built-in regression there and like George Pickins dropped a lot of balls.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_00]: There was some stuff in that game that you felt like, okay, this isn't necessarily replicable.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_00]: But I don't want to take anything away from the giants because what's interesting about them Albert is they lead.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_00]: for more snaps than like a quarter of the NFL last year, even though they were one of the worst teams in the league.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it couldn't finish.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_00]: It couldn't finish games.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_00]: And what did they do last night?
- 35:48[SPEAKER_00]: They finally just like, they withdrew that suspense.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and it was like, with two minutes to go, it's like, okay, we're gonna kneel on this thing.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_00]: There's no more cardiac element to this.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_00]: Like the games over.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_00]: Great.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that was the biggest difference.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_00]: What's that?
- 36:04[SPEAKER_01]: Five minutes drive.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_01]: And like that's a really hard thing to do like to me like that's that's one of the harder things to do in the NFL is to finish the game with a ball that way, you know, and not let the other team out of the ball back.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think it's a bad sign for where the cowboys are defensively?
- 36:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_01]: I I I I.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like, you know, we've all talked up Christian Parker.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's a bright young coach, but it felt like he got put into a blender by by Matt naggy on Sunday night.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, it's it's going to be interesting to see where that where the cowboys, how the cowboys bounce back from this.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not um uh yeah so that scares me because that performance and let's do a little bit of um stalling here so I can get the stat right because my guy shilka potty actually looked this up.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_00]: and he does a great job over at the ringer.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-
- 37:25[SPEAKER_00]: when they had a historic like one of the worst defenses of the last 25 years or more.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_00]: It was like 50 years among the 574 games since the start of last season, it was the 570 first best performance.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_00]: They had, they were on the field for seven possessions against the Germans.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_00]: They allowed four TDs.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_00]: They forced just one punt, one fumble, and then the last one, the clock ran out.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_00]: That just, it's not, it's not going to work.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's not going to work.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I worry a little bit.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: Do you worry a little bit too about how some of their key guys might be in the back nine of their career?
- 38:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, we're Sean Gary.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Quentin Williams isn't young anymore.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_01]: This is his Kenny Clark.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_01]: You know Kenny Clark.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_01]: And here's the thing, right?
- 38:11[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we cook her jail and Thompson like there's a lot of like players that have been in the league for a long time on that side of the ball for them.
- 38:19[SPEAKER_00]: I think that you know a lot we chalked up some of the giant success.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_00]: yesterday to the fact that the Cowboys secondaries is still pretty bad, you know, even with the addition of Caleb Downs.
- 38:30[SPEAKER_00]: But what did Jerry Jones build his entire, like, mental process on, if you can call it that, post Micah Parsons trade.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_00]: It was we need to get better at doing what?
- 38:44[SPEAKER_00]: stopping the run right that those are good players in that front seven those are good players right and the giants just dressed them down completely with a fourth round pick and cam scatabo who's coming off a shattered ankle and spent the whole off season doing back flips so like.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I mean, do you think about the ends of what you do?
- 39:05[SPEAKER_01]: Did you like the ends on Jim Nastick's there?
- 39:07[SPEAKER_01]: The, I love it.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_00]: And the floor, the floor came down like I'm trashing Kim's Gadibot.
- 39:12[SPEAKER_00]: I love Kim's Gadibot.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_00]: I love everything about his vibe.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_00]: He wore a Jackson Dark Jersey to the stadium.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_00]: It looks like he showed up drinking like a monster energy.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_00]: Like this is the guy we need.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_00]: You know, this is the folk hero that belongs in East Rutherford.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just happy that we get another go round to experience it all.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, but like, but Peyton Hill, and this is no offense to Peyton.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_00]: I covered Peyton Hill else, but like Peyton Hill else was like a personality.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you know, like, Peyton is a very nice and recover man, wasn't he?
- 39:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, yeah.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_00]: As a former Browns fan, I don't want to talk about that.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_00]: That was the absolute end of the Peyton Hill else run.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_00]: Peyton Hill else was an incredibly nice guy.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_00]: Kim Scadabo is like, he
- 40:01[SPEAKER_00]: which I really like.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_01]: There was some really colorful rumors about paint.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_01]: Hell, let's do it.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_01]: We don't need to get them out of here.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_00]: Um, all right.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I would have talked about Vikings Packers 39 22.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_00]: My goodness.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, this one, right before us.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but also.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_00]: So this is, this is a great step last year.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_00]: and quarters one through three.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_00]: The packers had a plus five point differential on average throughout the season.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_00]: You know what Q4 and over time was?
- 40:41[SPEAKER_00]: Minus 52.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_00]: Really?
- 40:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_00]: So, and this is with Jeff Haffley, it's with mostly Mike of Parsons throughout the season.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_00]: This team couldn't close out games.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_00]: So then you go to flash forward this time
- 40:58[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_00]: I think to me, and I know a lot of packers fans are chirping about the end zone holding call on Xavier McKinney and the fact that, I mean, the Vikings got a couple big calls in this game and hopefully continues to dress this franchise down.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, there is, there is a, or I can't like, I like how a cocky he looks when he's going.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's just like that.
- 41:18[SPEAKER_01]: Where there are three calls on that drive, right?
- 41:21[SPEAKER_01]: Isn't that right?
- 41:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, at least it was a okay illegal contact roughing and then defensive holding yeah, so there were three yeah The you know
- 41:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like you don't say, I can see where he'd be pissed.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_01]: He looks very happy.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_01]: Sean Hawkele looks very happy with himself when he's made up.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_00]: But his call to get his record against the Packers is pretty astounding.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_00]: Like to the point where like gambling people were like, oh, yeah, like this, this, this, do I need like search, hockey league Packers on social media.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't gone.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you can, like how, how weird do you want your, how weird do you want your money morning to be?
- 42:02[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but, you know,
- 42:06[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to call it a galaxy brain decision because, you know, but to me it all stemmed from Matt LaFlor taking points off the board in that game, right?
- 42:16[SPEAKER_00]: You kicked a field goal.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_00]: You went up eight against Carson Wentz and Carson Wentz played well in this game, but like you went up eight against Carson Wentz.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_00]: Did we overthink removing the points from the board and sneaking on a long one, like not even a medium one, like a long one.
- 42:35[SPEAKER_00]: didn't yeah.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_00]: Is that an overthinker there?
- 42:38[SPEAKER_01]: I would say yes.
- 42:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I would say I would say it's honestly, um, you've got a new love tackle, right?
- 42:47[SPEAKER_01]: And they've got some moving pieces on the front otherwise.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_01]: And I just, I,
- 42:55[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if I would trust their offensive line at this point and guess a Vikings defensive front that does have some size to turn out that yard, you know?
- 43:05[SPEAKER_01]: And it's the rookie that makes the play.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_01]: It was to meet your sorrows that makes the play.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I think you're right.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_01]: Like I think if I'm them, you go up by eight.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_01]: And now like that game at the very least, you know, you know, you're at the very least, you know, that's all they could the best they can do is tie it with 13 minutes left.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'd say I'd say if you need a touchdown drive, you need a two-point kit and the Vikings did event did that.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_01]: Here's the other part.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_01]: Here's the other part.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I don't think the Vikings had it.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_01]: I don't feel like the Vikings had a ton of life at that point.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think you're sort of giving them like I always feel like that's that that is you're giving them that look at it.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, that that's the life.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's that that's the untold thing about going forward on force down.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, whatever the analytics say all that different stuff where you always get that like little ghosting in the corner of the screen, I like I do think like there's that element of it that intangible where
- 44:10[SPEAKER_01]: you can give a dead team a life with a fourth-down stop.
- 44:14[SPEAKER_01]: You can give them a new energy, you can kind of give them a jolt.
- 44:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I do think that that exists.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_01]: And I think in this case,
- 44:22[SPEAKER_01]: We saw, okay, so you get that stop.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_01]: Then the offense goes on a nine play drive.
- 44:28[SPEAKER_01]: Now the defense is rested and like the defense then comes back playing with a lead.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_01]: And it looked like they were running down a hill at the end of the game.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 44:37[SPEAKER_01]: It looked like it looked, it just,
- 44:41[SPEAKER_01]: That was as aggressive as Brian Flores is, he was even more so at the end of the game and the way that he was able to attack attack Jordan love.
- 44:52[SPEAKER_00]: The Vikings play off team with Carson Wentz.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, with Carson once.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_00]: Well, well, because, right, I mean, we have to note in this game.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Kyla Murray went down with a kind of short, which is very sad, and he went into the fencing posture.
- 45:08[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to see him on the field for at least three or four weeks.
- 45:11[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I would be physically uncomfortable.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's like to watch him on the field like that after what happened to him.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_00]: I would, I think given the optics of that concussion, that protocol is going to be under
- 45:26[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but what do you say, I mean?
- 45:30[SPEAKER_00]: Justin Jefferson was back with Carson Wentz at quarterback, right?
- 45:35[SPEAKER_00]: Kyler Murray, the whole thing was Kevin O'Connell saying, I just don't want guys to make dumb decisions.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_00]: And what does Kyler Murray do in the first possession?
- 45:43[SPEAKER_00]: He gets six man pressure or five man pressure.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_01]: That was about to be bad a pick.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that was like, that just rose it up.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we didn't get an explanation of that from Kylo, because obviously he was in the protocol after the game and and look like that's a separate thing, right?
- 45:57[SPEAKER_01]: But this pick.
- 45:59[SPEAKER_01]: I felt like, what do you do?
- 46:00[SPEAKER_01]: And that was his first throw as a Viking, you know?
- 46:03[SPEAKER_01]: And he just looked like he was throwing it up or grabs like he was playing 500 back in the day or whatever.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_01]: It was like it was a weird decision.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_01]: And so I do know this with O'Connell is like, he feels like he owes it to the veterans on that team to give them the best possible answer, right?
- 46:19[SPEAKER_01]: Like what's the best possible answer?
- 46:21[SPEAKER_01]: A quarterback and what's gonna help Justin Jefferson have a big year?
- 46:24[SPEAKER_01]: What's gonna help Jordan Assen and TJ Hawkins
- 46:28[SPEAKER_01]: All these guys, all these veteran players that were part of a 14 when team two years ago, what's gonna put them in the best position?
- 46:35[SPEAKER_01]: And need look, obviously the sample size we have with Kyler is freaking tiny.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_01]: Like there wasn't very much there at all because he got hurt so early in the game.
- 46:45[SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, Carson once did look competent, you know, by the end.
- 46:49[SPEAKER_01]: And so if he's your best off, if he's your best answer, I think you do have to consider sticking with them, you know,
- 46:57[SPEAKER_01]: when you have a defense that I think by the end of the game.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, look, there's definitely the feast or famine thing to them, but some of the stuff they were doing was pretty cool.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 47:08[SPEAKER_01]: Like, and I talked to Blake Cashman after the game, and his quote was great.
- 47:14[SPEAKER_01]: He said, I personally believe that we're the scariest defense to go against if we have a lead, because that just unlocks our entire arsenal of mats, pressure, looks, reading, reading protections, all of our presentations and mixing up coverage, it's hard in an
- 47:34[SPEAKER_01]: So, like I, but I think that there's, there's something to that too, right?
- 47:38[SPEAKER_01]: Like so if you have a defense that's capable of that sort of thing, like what offense fits that best?
- 47:45[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and I think sometimes it can be an offense that can, that can control the clock, that can move the change, and it's Kyler more capable of running that offense than Carson
- 48:02[SPEAKER_00]: This is a great stat before we move on.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_00]: Carson wins is the first backup.
- 48:07[SPEAKER_00]: or, you know, the first backup or the quarterback who was not the, you know, who didn't, wasn't the designated starter in that game, to throw for three touchdowns and no interceptions in a season opening win in the NFL, since, you know, this is great.
- 48:27[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I know you don't know this is a great question.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_00]: So Carson wins is the first backup to throw,
- 48:34[SPEAKER_00]: He's the first backup to throw three passing touchdowns and no picks in a season opening win since whom.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's his ridiculous.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_00]: I know you know, expert name ridiculous, too.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_00]: Fran Tarkanton in 1961.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_00]: Which was the fight, which is the first I have ever Vikings games.
- 48:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's the first ever, but just hilarious.
- 49:02[SPEAKER_00]: Really expansion Vikings.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_00]: He was their backup.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_00]: Because he played the game.
- 49:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's right.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_01]: What's happening in the expansion draft?
- 49:08[SPEAKER_00]: Is that how he got to the Vikings?
- 49:09[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 49:10[SPEAKER_00]: He started with the Giants, right?
- 49:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think probably 170 year old listening and pounding.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_00]: No, I'm not saying he's 70, but our editor John Plum is a big Vikings fan and he probably.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_00]: He wouldn't have been, well, no, he wasn't left for that.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I'm gonna get myself in a lot of trouble here, speculating how old John is.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_00]: All right, let's move on, Albert, give me one more game for you, too.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_01]: Well, because give me one, say, because I had to find out if he was acquired in the expansion draft.
- 49:39[SPEAKER_01]: So he was, hold on, oh no, he came into the league, he, okay, he came into the league with the Vikings and then went back to the, and that's where John's going to kill us, like you idiots, he was drafted by the Vikings.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_00]: So he had to be back by the Vikings, then went to the giants, then came back to the Vikings, which is when he went to all the Super Bowls.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, John.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_01]: My second game is going to be, uh, the Bengals, uh, beating the box.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_01]: This is like one of those things where, you know, we're trying to take stuff away from week one.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_01]: And what I would take away from this is that maybe,
- 50:17[SPEAKER_01]: What Joe Burrow said to me over the summer was, I don't, I think we can play offense differently now because we're more well-rounded.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think I need to be Superman anymore.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_01]: And that's gonna allow me to play a different way because I really believe that our defense has turned the four.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_01]: Now, the final score doesn't look like, whoa, the defense played great.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_01]: But,
- 50:43[SPEAKER_01]: The box did score in a pick six, which again is Joe Burrow not being Superman in this game.
- 50:49[SPEAKER_01]: The box only scored 20 points.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_01]: They were held to 89 yards in the ground.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_01]: Baker Mayfield was stacked four times.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_01]: They netted out at under 200 yards passing.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_01]: The bangles forced four fumbles.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_01]: And if you combine the force fumble fumble recovery seven different players, or part of that.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and I think this is a pretty competent fucking years offense, right?
- 51:15[SPEAKER_01]: Like I I don't know.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm not saying I'm not saying they're what the bangles are, but they do have a book.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_01]: They do have a book here.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they do have Chris Godwin.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_01]: So I like I.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's at least a sign that the defense isn't going to be a liability anymore and we don't I don't think that they need to be one of the best defenses in football, but even like boy, moth, a winning at the end of that game, do you know who we beat on the game ending strip sack?
- 51:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_01]: Tristan worse.
- 51:49[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_01]: And so like I, I look at that and I'm like, okay.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_01]: that wouldn't happen last year, you know what I mean?
- 51:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like they didn't have somebody to do that.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_01]: That's not saying boy, I'm not that he's better than Tristan worse, but like just the fact that they have somebody who was capable of pulling that off.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_01]: And it wasn't like some exotic pressure.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, I look at like the bangles and it's like, okay, and this game,
- 52:17[SPEAKER_01]: They wind up winning 3327.
- 52:20[SPEAKER_01]: Burrow was okay.
- 52:21[SPEAKER_01]: Like, this, I think he would tell you this wasn't his best game.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_01]: They ran the ball, fine.
- 52:28[SPEAKER_01]: T-higgins had a big catch down the stretch, but three for 59, Jamar Chase 2 for 12, and they won.
- 52:36[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's significant because I do think over the last
- 52:41[SPEAKER_01]: What is it three years now?
- 52:43[SPEAKER_01]: Like they've made two years, you could say, they've legitimately needed Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase and T-Higgins to be on the top of their game every week.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_01]: And so the fact that they can win this way, I think is a good sign for where they're at.
- 53:00[SPEAKER_00]: I, um, it's interesting, right?
- 53:02[SPEAKER_00]: Because I wrote about this last night and when, um, when the giants beat the cowboys, it's, it's so hard for me to, and I used to be one of the loudest voices for like coaches need more time, coaches need more time, coaches need more time, you gotta be able to build a program, you gotta be able to build a program.
- 53:20[SPEAKER_00]: And then you look at,
- 53:22[SPEAKER_00]: You know, Declan Doyle coming down to Baltimore and being like, Oh, let me match up on it was safe flowers.
- 53:27[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody, you know, and he gets 150 yards in the first half or John Harbaugh.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_00]: Let me reimagine this giant's team and all of a sudden,
- 53:45[SPEAKER_00]: The immediate turnaround in the flip is so evident and so obvious and then you have teams and again I'm not saying that these teams should have fired their head coaches, but you know the packers, right Struggled every week to close out games and what did they do in the season opener?
- 54:00[SPEAKER_00]: They struggled to close out games, right?
- 54:03[SPEAKER_00]: The Buccaneers were another team and that's why I'm bringing this up, you know, where you know You could say that there was a legitimate debate as to whether they should bring back their head coach
- 54:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I kind of drives me nuts that fans are like, well, fumbles are not coaching plays, yes they are.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_00]: You know, if you fumble four times in a game, that's coaching, right?
- 54:25[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's coaching.
- 54:26[SPEAKER_00]: And the buck in your s fumbled four times in this game.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_00]: It was a minus three turnover differential, tied for the worst in the league.
- 54:34[SPEAKER_00]: You only got bailed out because Josiah Trotter had that phenomenal pick six.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_00]: What did they be for him by the way?
- 54:41[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think a lot of it is, the truth, the truth is that like if you stay the same, you stay the same.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 54:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that Tampa is going to be battling that all season.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_00]: And it's especially tough look when, you know, you give the quarterback the three-year extension, you know, when you pay Vivaia.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'm not right in them off, but this team looks like it's still asleep from from from from the, a postseason class or the end of season
- 55:09[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that's definitely, I mean, you know, it's weird is like I think it's like maybe there's something to play in that division that it was that they could keep turning out division titles and maybe there were some things there that needed to be addressed that weren't addressed and they did get old in some spots.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, like now part of it is they're going to need a mecca book to become their number one with Mike Evans gone.
- 55:35[SPEAKER_01]: And Bucky Irving really needs to be a big part of what they're doing defensively, or I mean they're running game, sorry, I'm still fricking rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.
- 55:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, I'd be somebody they had really high hopes for a collage of can see like I'm going through these names of these guys, I am a column somebody that they've paid now.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's it's just it's an interesting spot to be in because you do wonder is did these guys did some of the young guys they have flat line and they just they they aren't getting better anymore or.
- 56:13[SPEAKER_01]: Is it the program's gotten a little stale and we've heard, I mean, I'm sure you've heard you make these calls the same way I do midseason the last couple of years.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know about Tampa.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like, and you know, then they bring in Zach Robinson, who I think a lot of people say has head coach potential as the offensive coordinator, you know, after, you know, Todd's higher in in elevating a younger guy last year didn't work.
- 56:40[SPEAKER_01]: right so it's just I look I there's there's definitely something to dig into there and I think
- 56:48[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like you said, the Ben Johnson's and Liam Collins and Mike Rables of last year could wind up accelerating timetables for teams because, you know, there's that I just think historically when you have like those bursts where you have like young guys coming in in other places or not, you didn't even have to be young guys, but first year coaches coming out of their places and making an immediate impact.
- 57:13[SPEAKER_01]: Historically, I think has made owners scratch their heads and say, well, you know, if this is happening over there, the hell am I waiting for.
- 57:21[SPEAKER_00]: Let's round it out Albert.
- 57:23[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to go sea saw style you and then me, just give me a one minor.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_00]: I will let you go first.
- 57:31[SPEAKER_00]: Lion's 31 Saints 30.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_00]: What's your quick take away here.
- 57:36[SPEAKER_01]: I actually.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a little worried about the line's defense and they're cornered.
- 57:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, cornered situation, post-terian Arnold.
- 57:49[SPEAKER_01]: I would say the flip side of it is, I picked the Saints to win the NFC South and I feel good about that now.
- 57:56[SPEAKER_01]: I think Tyler's shock, it looks like, it looks like they actually have something.
- 57:59[SPEAKER_00]: The comeback there was inspiring.
- 58:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it looks like they actually have something.
- 58:04[SPEAKER_01]: And when they get Jordan Tyson back from injury,
- 58:08[SPEAKER_01]: And then you add them to Crystal Lobby as long as the Lobby can stay healthy, and now you get the two first round tackles and the Brandon Staley defense, I mean, look, that's a great offense they're playing against and the Brandon Staley defense, I think, hung in there and was able to kind of help facilitate the come back.
- 58:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think the same to have something I walk away from that game, probably not really changing my opinion much on the lines, like other than that one concern on defense, but I think we're highly of the same now.
- 58:39[SPEAKER_00]: uh... jets
- 58:41[SPEAKER_00]: 23 Titans 10, my takeaway here and this is not to take away anything from the Jets because I think I'm really happy for Jets fans who have starved for competent quarterback play for such a long time and you see how even the bare minimum can unlock guys like Garrett Wilson who had six catches for 79 yards, you've got 80 Mitchell involved, Omar Cooper, I mean he's
- 59:11[SPEAKER_00]: and then Kenyan Sadik is in the mix to it with experience hands like Frank Reich and, you know, genus myth played a really good football game.
- 59:19[SPEAKER_00]: My concern here is that I think that there, I think the Titans are worse than we thought they were.
- 59:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm just saying I did
- 59:30[SPEAKER_00]: arch-maning in Tennessee next year or so.
- 59:34[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 59:34[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, because, and I, you know, not to pat myself on the back.
- 59:38[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like to be a guy who forecasts and negativity in the world, but we wrote this in our quarterback carousel preview.
- 59:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's this year is less about like the Bryson and CJ Stroud of it all is interesting, but to me, it's the Jackson Darton cam word of it all because you have new coaches and you have teams that could still be bad.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_00]: And the Titans look bad.
- 59:59[SPEAKER_00]: And they're bad and disorganized.
- 1:00:02[SPEAKER_01]: I would say, look, the potential of the quarterback class, we don't need to rehash what Archmany did on Saturday night.
- 1:00:11[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, I will say this.
- 1:00:13[SPEAKER_01]: He's not as involved as his uncle's work at the same stage, but man, he is tough as hell because he got the crap knocked out of them and kept swinging.
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know if you watched any of Drew Mesta Maker.
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_01]: He's somebody to watch, Brady Quinn put me on his put put him on my radar months ago and said this is one you want to watch and he went in and Oklahoma state I think it lost like 20 straight games against FBS competition or something like that and he beat Oregon and so like you know again like I'm bringing those names up because I if you're in position to take one and you're one of these teams can you pass it up if you're got to show you a little bit more.
- 1:00:53[SPEAKER_00]: No doubt.
- 1:00:53[SPEAKER_00]: All right, let's keep rolling.
- 1:00:54[SPEAKER_00]: I'll take this one just because I, it's my favorite stat, Steelers 20 Falcons 13, it was Sumer Sports.
- 1:01:03[SPEAKER_00]: I included it in my column yesterday.
- 1:01:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think they've cataloged 1,091 football games.
- 1:01:09[SPEAKER_00]: It was the 1,067th worst offensive performance collectively in an NFL game.
- 1:01:16[SPEAKER_01]: Um, like, like the number again, given that number again.
- 1:01:19[SPEAKER_00]: So they had like they they've cataloged 1,000 91 football games, which is like a little more than it's almost six seasons worth of football games.
- 1:01:27[SPEAKER_00]: This was the 1,067 in terms of the 25th worst, right?
- 1:01:33[SPEAKER_00]: About that.
- 1:01:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_01]: And more and more.
- 1:01:35[SPEAKER_01]: But you'd be in your counting both numbers.
- 1:01:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think it would be 25.
- 1:01:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:01:39[SPEAKER_00]: And so, and anyone who, you know, I know it was kind of a nice cozy thing for Mike McCarthy, but, I mean, this, this Steelers team, Nick Folk missed two field goals for the Falcons, and you needed a TJ watt pick six on top of that, which was like a super human like, well, he was super human, but also no one touched him after he grabbed the ball.
- 1:02:01[SPEAKER_01]: And so that was pretty sick, though, that was an old school TV.
- 1:02:04[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not discounting, I'm not discounting the pick.
- 1:02:06[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just, I'm pointing out that the opponent, you know, here is you're not getting Cooper Rush and the Falcons defense every week.
- 1:02:15[SPEAKER_00]: So I, you know, DK Metcaft didn't look in this game.
- 1:02:17[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I'm, I'm still confident in my kind of shorting of the Steelers.
- 1:02:23[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, Albert bears 59, Panthers 37, give me something there.
- 1:02:27[SPEAKER_01]: I, I mean, it just looks like Ben Johnson's got that that off in the place where things are things are limitless right now.
- 1:02:34[SPEAKER_01]: 59 points.
- 1:02:36[SPEAKER_01]: Again, I have some of the things written down here for my column 291 rushing yards, 261 yards passing.
- 1:02:42[SPEAKER_01]: A 124 point one passer 80 for Caleb Williams, 71.4% third down conversion rate and eight
- 1:02:56[SPEAKER_01]: I, I, I mean, maybe Caroline is really bad on defense.
- 1:03:00[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:03:01[SPEAKER_01]: I turn to think they, they, they aren't that bad.
- 1:03:05[SPEAKER_01]: It's, and when I talk to the Andre Swift after the game, he said, well, we have five penalties, and there were four negative plays.
- 1:03:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's sort of the mindset that Ben Johnson has instilled in that place.
- 1:03:18[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I even think of it like through the lens of like Colston Lovelin had a fantastic training campus like a non-factor in this game.
- 1:03:24[SPEAKER_01]: So they still have like clubs in the bag that they're not swinging at.
- 1:03:30[SPEAKER_01]: I, I didn't know this is probably gonna be a lot of bears games this year, right?
- 1:03:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, you know, the offense is the offense is just an absolute laser show and hold on to your butts.
- 1:03:42[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna come.
- 1:03:45[SPEAKER_00]: Speaking of holding on to your butts and ass and, you know, poop and all that kind of stuff Jaguar's 34 Browns 10.
- 1:03:55[SPEAKER_00]: You know, yes, Liam Cohen's offense is this good.
- 1:03:58[SPEAKER_00]: Trevor Lawrence and Liam Cohen are this good.
- 1:04:00[SPEAKER_00]: But I want to say something that I think is is relevant throughout the course of the remainder of the season because you just brought up archmaning.
- 1:04:10[SPEAKER_00]: everything that the Brown seemed to be doing now, organizationally, is setting themselves up for taking one of these quarterbacks in this next draft class.
- 1:04:18[SPEAKER_00]: And this has been the perpetual promise, as they keep going on.
- 1:04:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, oh, we're building and we're making the smart analytical trades.
- 1:04:24[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to stockpile.
- 1:04:26[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to get the equity and we're going to go get the guy.
- 1:04:29[SPEAKER_00]: The last guy was Deshaam Watson, but this time it's so clearly pointed towards getting a rookie
- 1:04:41[SPEAKER_00]: I would fully support and I would perhaps expect players to start saying I'm not going here and I'm just going to go back to school.
- 1:04:51[SPEAKER_00]: If your plan is to draft me, I'm not going here.
- 1:04:54[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that is going like the opener was bad enough that I think that that needs to be part of the discussion.
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what you said.
- 1:05:03[SPEAKER_00]: I would be concerned.
- 1:05:03[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'll
- 1:05:10[SPEAKER_01]: How often is that word?
- 1:05:14[SPEAKER_01]: How often is that word?
- 1:05:16[SPEAKER_01]: Like engineering a result in the draft.
- 1:05:18[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm all for, listen, I'm trying, they tried it and they got miles here.
- 1:05:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'm right, they got bigger, they feel, they tried it and then they flipped it and I'm all short.
- 1:05:29[SPEAKER_01]: I'm all short.
- 1:05:29[SPEAKER_01]: I'm all short.
- 1:05:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm all for like, if you're in the last two or three weeks this season, honestly, organizationally, I'm all for a creative roster management.
- 1:05:37[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:05:38[SPEAKER_01]: I got my all for that.
- 1:05:39[SPEAKER_01]: Like put a corporate term for that.
- 1:05:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:05:42[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, but I am, I am an organization.
- 1:05:44[SPEAKER_01]: I, you know, look like the Bengals did it in 2020.
- 1:05:47[SPEAKER_01]: I, I think, or 2019, right, where there were some, I think just some questionable things down the stretch of the year, and they wound up with Joe Burrow.
- 1:05:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I, that, that worked.
- 1:05:58[SPEAKER_00]: That, that they got to a Super Bowl two years later, that freaking worked.
- 1:06:02[SPEAKER_01]: But when you're talking about engineering
- 1:06:07[SPEAKER_01]: Um, immediately the argument will see what happens with Jane Danes or Washington, where like they try to sweat and chase young in the middle of the year.
- 1:06:16[SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, more often than not, it's just like stuff goes haywire and the team winds up with the first pick, you know, like the the Colts like like Peyton Manning got hurt, you know, and so like that's how they wound up with the first pick, and then in 97, a bunch of stuff went wrong, they fired everybody and they wind up with the first pick and they just happen to have the first pick and they were, they were really haven't been that bad, but they wind up having the first pick and the first in the two exact right years.
- 1:06:43[SPEAKER_01]: My point is, I have the damage that you incur when you do this.
- 1:06:48[SPEAKER_01]: Like, these are human beings that have to play for this team.
- 1:06:51[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't like a simulation, you know?
- 1:06:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like, oh, yeah, I'll just like strip the roster down and put this on, you know, put this on computer mode for the rest of the year.
- 1:07:02[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, we'll get to 2115 and we'll wind up with a quarterback we want.
- 1:07:08[SPEAKER_01]: you know, you do damage when you do that.
- 1:07:11[SPEAKER_01]: And so like I think personally, and I don't think Todd Monk has gonna let that happen, but I personally think like the damage that you would do if a lot more weeks look like that look like is gonna be pretty serious.
- 1:07:27[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't, I mean,
- 1:07:29[SPEAKER_01]: The quarterback situation is a quarterback situation.
- 1:07:31[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, if Deshawn Watson doesn't play better next week against Tampa, I think we all know what could potentially happen ahead of their home opener.
- 1:07:39[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:07:39[SPEAKER_00]: And we got a role, but I'll just finish with this.
- 1:07:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:07:41[SPEAKER_00]: The Browns interviewed a lot of young.
- 1:07:44[SPEAKER_00]: play callers needed another year of seasoning and part of me believes that is to have a stock pile of information that if Todd wasn't the guy that they could pivot after any of these guys get better.
- 1:07:55[SPEAKER_00]: If you're great, you didn't ski.
- 1:07:56[SPEAKER_00]: If you're Nate, she'll house.
- 1:07:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think if you're Declan Doyle, are you going here?
- 1:08:00[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 1:08:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think you didn't ski would be the one.
- 1:08:03[SPEAKER_01]: If they if they if that was ever to happen, I think you didn't ski would be the one.
- 1:08:08[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't know if you would go there because of the circumstances, you know.
- 1:08:12[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:08:13[SPEAKER_00]: That's all I'm saying, and I think that the Browns are never really quite cognizant of the totality of the optics, but all right.
- 1:08:22[SPEAKER_00]: Let's burn here, Raiders 27, Dolphins 13.
- 1:08:27[SPEAKER_00]: What do you got from me here?
- 1:08:29[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I would use the term that a lot of people in Miami have used with me over the last month or so as we are a long way to go.
- 1:08:40[SPEAKER_01]: There's a reason why they were, you know, they put in seven wave reclaims after the cut down.
- 1:08:46[SPEAKER_01]: There's a reason why they are where they are.
- 1:08:49[SPEAKER_01]: I would say on the radar side of it, I think there's genuine progress.
- 1:08:52[SPEAKER_01]: Like, Ash and Janty look like,
- 1:08:55[SPEAKER_01]: like a high-end running back yesterday, you know, and I think the more success Jenty has, you know, you're still waiting for, you're still waiting for, for Brock Bowers to come back into the mix, right?
- 1:09:09[SPEAKER_00]: And that'll, you know, that, that'll do a lot for their passing game.
- 1:09:12[SPEAKER_01]: But,
- 1:09:13[SPEAKER_01]: the the more you can show in these areas where that'll support you on quarterback the quicker you're going to see you see Fernando Mendoza in there.
- 1:09:23[SPEAKER_01]: But I thought cousins was fine too, you know like I think cousins let's say have perfectly competent yeah he threw a couple picks but yeah he's a perfectly competent stop gap that you know
- 1:09:34[SPEAKER_01]: you can use to be patient with mendoza and not throw mendoza in there until the right situation is around the quarterback.
- 1:09:43[SPEAKER_00]: Eagles 24 Commanders 22 a good start.
- 1:09:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think for the manion offense a little bit stagnant in the second half and then jail and hurts kind of broke free With a lot of the scrambling with using his legs, but 203 and three touchdowns and only you know and three sacks are going to take it just some quick kind of staccato thoughts here the Eagles were one of the worst teams against quarterback runs last year and I thought that the fan geo defense did a nice job bottling up jaden Daniels only 31 yards on five carries
- 1:10:13[SPEAKER_00]: And last but not least, your boy, sunny styles, absolutely blowing up, say quen Barclay in the backfield on this one.
- 1:10:19[SPEAKER_00]: Woo, woo, woo.
- 1:10:21[SPEAKER_01]: That was like one of those Brady, I got Brady's attention.
- 1:10:23[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you noticed that, but Brady was like, that's why you dropped that guy in the top 10.
- 1:10:28[SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
- 1:10:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he was big.
- 1:10:30[SPEAKER_01]: He's a freak show, and I would say when I said back in April, if anybody wants to know what sort of athlete he is, pull up his high school basketball highlights, there's something else.
- 1:10:37[SPEAKER_00]: Crazy.
- 1:10:38[SPEAKER_01]: I would want to want my one thought on the Eagles, his Sean Manning was brought into fix the wrong game, and there are signs that he's starting to do that.
- 1:10:46[SPEAKER_00]: their signs for sure eagles fans also get away with it because if it wasn't for Stefan digs doing something completely boneheaded and dry hunting the field goal post after touchdown we may have been talking about a very different universe so that was that was not the sort of action that you want to see from your 12 year vet.
- 1:11:10[SPEAKER_00]: last and certainly last and when the chargers think about it, the chargers blew one.
- 1:11:16[SPEAKER_00]: They were the they win week one boner award losing to the Cardinals 26 to 14.
- 1:11:23[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think about this one?
- 1:11:24[SPEAKER_01]: Can I take it through this really quick?
- 1:11:25[SPEAKER_01]: Because let's go.
- 1:11:26[SPEAKER_01]: I put this in my column.
- 1:11:27[SPEAKER_01]: The last 12 minutes, I'd say oh straight to live on both sides here, right?
- 1:11:33[SPEAKER_01]: So.
- 1:11:35[SPEAKER_01]: the charge of the ball down 16, 14 with 13, 55 left.
- 1:11:43[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:11:44[SPEAKER_01]: And you would have expected that point okay.
- 1:11:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's time to stop playing with your food.
- 1:11:48[SPEAKER_01]: The chargeers are going to put their foot in the ground and take over here.
- 1:11:52[SPEAKER_01]: Chargers 3 and out, Chargers pump blocked.
- 1:11:55[SPEAKER_01]: You're coming for set 3, our touchdown pass, the training bride, two plays later.
- 1:11:59[SPEAKER_01]: Justin Herbert in herception, two cardinal first downs, Chargers turn over on downs, Cardinals 49 years feel go from Chad Rylan.
- 1:12:08[SPEAKER_01]: Chargers 4 and out victory formation.
- 1:12:11[SPEAKER_01]: I mean,
- 1:12:14[SPEAKER_01]: That is not the way you end a football game if you're a suitable contender.
- 1:12:18[SPEAKER_01]: And it's really hard not to be like, what the hell just happened.
- 1:12:23[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I think early in the season, we can make this, sometimes we can oversell these things.
- 1:12:30[SPEAKER_01]: But,
- 1:12:32[SPEAKER_01]: the lack of jet like go from Jesse mentored to Chris O'Leary is something that we have to monitor there.
- 1:12:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's also a new offensive system.
- 1:12:40[SPEAKER_01]: And I think we all expect great things from Justin Herbert and Mike Danyl.
- 1:12:46[SPEAKER_01]: But it did not look good.
- 1:12:47[SPEAKER_01]: It did not look good.
- 1:12:48[SPEAKER_01]: And if you're the chargers, you hang your hat on, you know, what we got first year in a field offensive coordinator taking over for one of the best defensive play callers in the league.
- 1:12:57[SPEAKER_01]: And we have a new offense coming
- 1:13:02[SPEAKER_01]: Like other than that, I don't know what you take from this performance and few of the charge are and the cardinals look like Michael for a great debut like fantastic like his team showed endurance and Resilience and all that different stuff and so a good thing for Michael for take with them
- 1:13:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm going to wait a week to start suspect acting suspicious of the Mike McDaniel era.
- 1:13:25[SPEAKER_00]: I'm also going to wait a week.
- 1:13:27[SPEAKER_01]: But do you think you could go plant or something?
- 1:13:29[SPEAKER_00]: No, not a plant, but sometimes offences or schemes or coordinators just doesn't work.
- 1:13:37[SPEAKER_00]: Like it loses its, whatever.
- 1:13:39[SPEAKER_00]: And so, but I don't know.
- 1:13:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think this is one of those situations.
- 1:13:42[SPEAKER_00]: Again, I think a lot of people pegged
- 1:13:44[SPEAKER_00]: the Chargers is a possible week one boner.
- 1:13:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I would say this, the chatGBT recommended the Chargers as the it's heaviest favorite for week one knockout pools.
- 1:13:55[SPEAKER_00]: So guess what?
- 1:13:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it has no shit.
- 1:13:57[SPEAKER_01]: What's alarming to me, though?
- 1:13:59[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see what it's talking.
- 1:14:01[SPEAKER_01]: You would expect Mike McDang would make a difference in the run game.
- 1:14:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I think the run game is a relative non-factor for the Chargers.
- 1:14:08[SPEAKER_00]: totally agree.
- 1:14:10[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to be back later this week to break it all down.
