- 0:33Hamster with a Blump Pen Knife for doing quicker, quicker,
- 0:41quicker. Welcome back to A Hamster with a
- 0:42Blump and Knife the Doctor Who Commentary Podcast.
- 0:47I am joined today by a hamster virgin but no stranger to the
- 0:53hamster community, the Glorious Joe Short.
- 0:57Say hello, Joe. Hello Joe.
- 1:00And as a small caveat, we're going to say straight away that
- 1:04Joe's in the library and there's a little shit outside the door
- 1:07she's in banging on it and you might hear him every now and
- 1:09again, even though we're going to try and scare him with the
- 1:11monsters in this episode. His mother has hopefully dragged
- 1:15him away and oh God, and hopefully not beating him to
- 1:19death. It's what I would have done.
- 1:21But no, he's gone now. Hopefully so.
- 1:24The joys of Public Library. SO this appearance on Hanson has
- 1:28been a long time coming. It has, we've been saying for
- 1:31for God's it probably, and it might be a year, you know.
- 1:36It probably is actually a year or so, yeah.
- 1:39Well, before we talk about the episode or anything else, can I
- 1:42say one thing to you, please? Thank you very much because
- 1:47you've been a supporter of this podcast for a long, long time
- 1:51now. You've generated a shit ton of
- 1:53positivity in the community around it.
- 1:57You've engaged on most episodes. Like, honestly, you've been
- 2:00incredible. So thank you very much.
- 2:02You're welcome. That's very good.
- 2:04It makes my day. You've been part of the hand
- 2:06fan. Really.
- 2:07So you're the only one who puts up with my filth and celebrates
- 2:11it. Everyone else tells me off.
- 2:17I know. I just think I can be.
- 2:18I I'm one of those sort of quiet people who surprised people with
- 2:22how filthy they can be. I was already talking.
- 2:27Well, we're about the fella in this episode.
- 2:30Oh dear me, yes. So could you tell me please,
- 2:35because you've done 2 two other podcasts already, haven't you?
- 2:39So if people should wish to explore you elsewhere, forgive
- 2:43my phraseology, there where they would need to go.
- 2:47Right. The first one I did was Jason
- 2:51Miller's Doctor Who Literature. Yeah, because of technical
- 2:59issues, but sure, it's purely my fault is about the short one on
- 3:04the target. Of the Monster of Peladon, but
- 3:10the competent one. When I got a laptop is Dave with
- 3:15Dave Rennie. I did a kettle and a piece of
- 3:17string. We did the Time Warrior, which
- 3:20was great fun, a wonderful story as well.
- 3:24I love poetry. Well, you and I are going to be
- 3:27embarking on Perry in the future, aren't we?
- 3:29We are. I did.
- 3:31He was my first doctor. He's still probably my favorite,
- 3:35at least probably classic Doctor.
- 3:37So who's your favorite new DO Doctor then?
- 3:42Go Mr. Capaldi. Yeah, I knew that was coming,
- 3:47but you know, that's not a popular answer.
- 3:50And the weird thing was he got he was the one who got, you
- 3:53know, everyone says, oh one minute he became Doctor Who.
- 3:55Everyone's. I stopped watching.
- 3:57I'm the complete opposite. He was the reason I got.
- 4:02Back into Doctor Who? Well, had you not watched it
- 4:04before then? Then they serious.
- 4:06I had, you know, I'd had and I sort of like watched it and then
- 4:10I think I just don't. Matt Smith just doesn't do it
- 4:14for me. Oh Joe, thank God I found you.
- 4:19I know. I don't know.
- 4:22He's perfectly fine. I can understand why the people
- 4:25love him. I just don't.
- 4:26He just. I just don't.
- 4:27He just doesn't do anything for me.
- 4:32I just don't. I don't know what it is about
- 4:34it. I just don't know.
- 4:36And then I sort of like I used to work for blockbusters for
- 4:40years. So I got There's a name I've not
- 4:42heard for a while. Well, I can tell you what, I got
- 4:47my e-mail read out on the Big Finish podcast on Sunday because
- 4:51they were talking about me winding videos.
- 4:54So I emailed them. I used to work at Blockbusters
- 4:57and we hated people on TV and they read it out, which was
- 5:00hysterical. And I confess something to you
- 5:03then. Yeah, I was a bugger for that.
- 5:06Not rewinding, though. I'm so sorry.
- 5:09You weren't anywhere near Crawley, were you?
- 5:11I wasn't near Crawley, thank you.
- 5:12Oh, at least I wasn't winding you up because.
- 5:14We had these little machines. You had to stick them in.
- 5:16You rewinding there. Oh God, yeah.
- 5:19So blockbuster videos, you know? Yeah, that was my job.
- 5:23Yeah. No.
- 5:24So I used to. I watched it.
- 5:25I used to work. I used to work Saturdays as
- 5:27well. So I never really used to watch
- 5:29Short To Who live. And then I got in a bit looking
- 5:32at. I watched the Echo stands.
- 5:34I watched most of the. I think I'm watching all of the
- 5:36tenants. Then Matt Smith came along.
- 5:39Just thought I don't know but then I think it's just you and
- 5:44me you know that's not that's not true that I think.
- 5:47I think there there's it's as divisive as Cabaldi.
- 5:51Yeah, it's just that. And it's just like, I just don't
- 5:54like the him. Don't ask anything.
- 5:56We started about the runny ponds.
- 6:00Oh, I don't think we must do one of those, you know, in the
- 6:02future. Just.
- 6:03Say I'm a little bullet in. No, I mean I know, like Fraser
- 6:06loves Matt Smith and I love Fraser, but I just don't.
- 6:10But when I heard Capaldi was on because I thought he's a great,
- 6:12I love the thick of it, I love him.
- 6:16And I just thought, this is interesting and it's just, I
- 6:19just thought, you know, you know, so he was the one who got
- 6:22me back in. And I'm probably very rare in,
- 6:24you know, there's not many of us who would say that.
- 6:27But I mean, I think I think there's again, because I've had
- 6:30Margaret Manis, Dylan Reese, enough people come on here and
- 6:34say that Kapoor is their favorite.
- 6:36What was it about his doctor then that you really like?
- 6:40I love it because you can see every other single doctor in him
- 6:47and it's like little flashes of it's something he does, the way
- 6:51he looks, something he says. But all the other doctors, you
- 6:56actually believe that he is the 12th of the same person because
- 7:02little things he does, little gestures little.
- 7:05And I don't know if it's him or the scriptwriters or a
- 7:07combination of both, because you know how much he loves the show.
- 7:12No, a lot of his, I think. I mean, I think it's in the
- 7:14script sometimes, but a lot of it's probably him.
- 7:16It's. Just that thing.
- 7:17I mean there's this little bit. I love him.
- 7:20I think it's in it's in here, it's in the Saigon, the first
- 7:23Saigon episode. And it's when he, he rescues
- 7:28Allsgood and he says hello. But the way he says it, it's
- 7:32just like David Tennant. And it's really funny because
- 7:36he's just like you can see that you know somewhere in, you know,
- 7:38he's a completely different body and then you know, but.
- 7:41At the core of what he is, it's the same person.
- 7:45And I love that about him. And I just think, you know,
- 7:51he's, you know, as always, say Grampy.
- 7:53He's so old. I love that about him.
- 7:56I love about. That's what I am.
- 8:01I mean, I'm old, but I'm not grumpy, but I love, I love the
- 8:05fact he's a bit acidic, you know, he's a bit nasty at times.
- 8:08He's. Sarcastic and nasty.
- 8:09And that's probably know he. Back to go, Well, that's what
- 8:12everyone says about perch we which isn't, you know, it's true
- 8:16up to a point. But then again, you look at some
- 8:19of the other doctors and they're equally as we've not more.
- 8:22Some of them just slap a smile on, you know, and they're quite
- 8:25funny with it, but they're still appalling.
- 8:28Yeah, I mean, as I, you know, I can do.
- 8:30I'm not. I've tried to be nice, but
- 8:31sometimes I just do that old dot, you know?
- 8:34We all have. We all have our moments.
- 8:36You. Speak your mind, you just go.
- 8:38Oh God, no. Well, you bite you little bit.
- 8:42But like, he has some lines. So today we're talking about
- 8:46sleeping and more and more on that.
- 8:48In a second he has he has a line in this one that made me how
- 8:52where he goes. What is it?
- 8:53Look, I'm the Doctor, all right? I name things, not you.
- 8:56It's. Just so funny.
- 8:58Yeah, it's the silurium. It's all over again.
- 9:04That was a great line. Looking at I'm watching the side
- 9:08Lurians at the moment. Oh my God, isn't baby Paul
- 9:11Darrow adorable? Oh, he's gorgeous.
- 9:13Gorgeous. I'll sit there going, Oh my
- 9:17Lord. What battles me is he's not
- 9:19camping it up in that. I'm so used to him, you know,
- 9:21playing up to the camera. Oh, no, sort of.
- 9:25I've only just got back. I've only, I'm like a bit like
- 9:27Dave, Dave, Dave. For any.
- 9:28I've only just got into Blake's 7.
- 9:30I don't know how I missed watching it in the past.
- 9:33Oh, you have got some gems coming up and so many Doctor Who
- 9:36actors are in that. I know I'm not.
- 9:39I've just done the I've done the first two seasons so far, so
- 9:44some people would say you've hit the zenith, but I think three
- 9:47and four are the best seasons, so.
- 9:49I've got those to look forward to.
- 9:53Can I? Oh, sorry, I was going to say,
- 9:55can I ask you a question? So of all the Doctor Who
- 9:59episodes in the new series now, I believe there's around 177
- 10:04episodes now and I've only done about a third of them.
- 10:09You could have chosen any number of human natures, midnights or
- 10:16the like. Why did you choose Sleep Now?
- 10:20Because I'm an awkward son. Also, I'm one of those people
- 10:26that if everybody else likes something, I don't like it or I
- 10:32don't. I won't watch it.
- 10:33Just that shit. Custardness.
- 10:34I'm a bit like that, you know? I'm a bit like that.
- 10:36It's like, oh everyone, everyone know, I love this.
- 10:39Everyone's seen it. I haven't.
- 10:41Do you know what? Usually I'm like?
- 10:42I'll wait till everyone stop talking about it and then I'll
- 10:45watch it. You know, everyone was going to
- 10:48be strange new worlds. It's amazing, that new Star Trek
- 10:50show. And I thought, well, I'm not
- 10:52going to watch that. And of course then I watched it
- 10:54later on and it was great, but. No, I just don't.
- 10:58I honestly think I don't understand the hatred for it.
- 11:03Maybe hatred's a bad word. I just don't understand why
- 11:06everybody doesn't like it to a really extreme some people to a
- 11:12really extreme sort of end. And it's not the best Doctor,
- 11:17it's not the best property, it's not the best new Doctor Who,
- 11:20it's not the best Capaldi. But I think there's so many bits
- 11:24in it that are really good because it's different, as we
- 11:32were saying. Yeah.
- 11:33It's very, very different. Yeah.
- 11:35It's very different. Do you think there's this thing
- 11:41in fandom where we like, OK, well this has all got a bit same
- 11:44here, we want something a bit different and then the second
- 11:46they give us something different.
- 11:47We're going. What the hell is this?
- 11:51Yeah. I know we're such a ohh God,
- 11:53we're never bloody happy are we? That that is the problem.
- 11:57In fact, you detailed it brilliantly before we started
- 11:59recording where you and people don't like Mark Gates's stuff.
- 12:05They don't like a pool do they don't like the era.
- 12:07They don't like knew who, and it's sort of there is this this
- 12:11section of fandom that just you cannot satisfy.
- 12:16You get the feeling this went on from day one.
- 12:18There's probably people who turned up, and I don't like
- 12:20Cavemen. When do these Cavemen come?
- 12:24Patrick Trout. Who's this?
- 12:26Oh yeah, watching this. Yeah, not my doctor.
- 12:30It's all to Earth. No, I'm out.
- 12:33Not exactly. Yeah.
- 12:34The Nmd's have been around, yeah.
- 12:37They were probably literally. Be around for the minute you
- 12:40know sort of chat and appeared the game who say it don't like
- 12:42him. So I think it's like you say,
- 12:45because we're contrary, but how do you fail with season nine
- 12:50series 9? I like.
- 12:52I quite like it. It's sort of like the awkward
- 12:56middle child it is. Yeah, it is.
- 12:59And they're trying to do sort of daring things.
- 13:01They're doing a lot of two parters, aren't they?
- 13:03And three parters. I know it's sort of like there's
- 13:08a lot of people who said, you know, Clara should have gone in
- 13:13last Christmas, so maybe she should have, you know, that
- 13:15would have been a very good end for her story.
- 13:17But so you just have to go. But I mean, I was like I was
- 13:22saying, I really like the Zygone ones, the two parts.
- 13:27And we enjoy that and sort of like.
- 13:30You know any season that has sort of like heaven sends in it
- 13:33can't feel bad. You cannot write it off.
- 13:35I know you get rid of Clara. You know you can't have a
- 13:37fabulous villainous Turner's Bonnie in that like on 2 Park
- 13:41and he where she's having a great time.
- 13:44Oh. My God, aren't they all?
- 13:45It's sort of like, it's like Inferno all over again, isn't
- 13:48it? It's like, oh, I can be evil in
- 13:50this. I still cannot forgive her, you
- 13:52know, if I'm murdering Jay Griffiths from Bugs.
- 13:56Oh, no. Oh God, she.
- 13:57I'll wait. I'll think about her.
- 13:59I think she's the work experience person at you.
- 14:03Well, she's having a bad week, she.
- 14:06Doesn't seem to know what's going on.
- 14:07If you got, it's a magician's apprentice.
- 14:11Kate's got a gardening glass on, you know, She's got no idea
- 14:14what's happening. I think you're at the work
- 14:16experience just dragged you because you know.
- 14:22You know, Osgood's not there anymore.
- 14:24So I think, oh God, can we get someone from A10 pin agent?
- 14:29And you've kind of got in nine, you've got Capody.
- 14:31He sort of found his feet at this point and they're trying to
- 14:34give him a lot more humor on top of a tank with electric guitar
- 14:37and things like this. I know, I know it's oh God, I
- 14:43don't, But I I consider it his midlife crisis period, you know,
- 14:50but this, right? This the last thing I ever would
- 14:52would be expected from Mark Gates because I think the one
- 14:54thing he does extremely well is pastiches of Doctor Who so
- 14:58Crimson or he's doing that sort of grotesque comedy horror that
- 15:02Robert Holmes did so well in Idiot's Lantern.
- 15:07He's doing like a celebrity historical.
- 15:10He leans into that the. Robot show would sort of say
- 15:13comical historical. Empress of Mars is basically the
- 15:17Monster of Pelidon, but more fun.
- 15:22But this is something really experimental and really
- 15:26innovative. Which is why people hate.
- 15:32Well, and that's what we said. This is the episode where
- 15:35basically the entire universe is wiped out.
- 15:41By my mucus, by by I boogers, I boogers.
- 15:47What a way to go. I figured it could be renamed.
- 15:49The doctor fails, you know. Yeah, well, I'll tell you what.
- 15:53Should we go in and watch the thing?
- 15:55Yes, wristwatch it. Yeah, Okay.
- 15:57Oh, I'll see what. Come on, you cannot see him.
- 16:0154321 Off we go. You must not watch this.
- 16:10That's. Kelly Over.
- 16:16Right. Turn it off.
- 16:16Yeah. So what about Ray Shear Smith?
- 16:20I like wish this. So have you seen inside #9?
- 16:25I haven't. I've seen bits of it.
- 16:26So I've seen him, mostly because I love the league of Gentlemen.
- 16:29So I've seen him in that. I mean, he could turn his hand
- 16:33to any character in that, can't he?
- 16:34No. That's incredible.
- 16:36So do you remember that posh housewife you played with Mark
- 16:40Gates as a housekeeper? I love that there.
- 16:44I've met so many women like that in my life.
- 16:50So basically what he's saying at the beginning of this is a
- 16:55warning because if we watch this, we're going to die.
- 16:58Is that right? Oh Pretty Man.
- 17:03Oh Chopra 28 Seven out of 10 Survival rating Survival.
- 17:09Rating I star. That's what I give him.
- 17:14Oh, he's very Does he die? Is the last one to die.
- 17:19Isn't he? I think it's the last one, but
- 17:21this is a really neat way of introducing each of the
- 17:24characters does. This give you huge DS9 vibes, so
- 17:32go on. In Polknore, where they go to
- 17:35like the deserted space station, Yeah, pretty much, yeah.
- 17:40And there's a lot of sort of running around dark corridors,
- 17:43people being picked off 1 by 1. Do you know what you're
- 17:47reminding me of as well? I don't know.
- 17:48Have you ever read any of the BBC books?
- 17:50Read some of them. Yes, there's one by Steve Cole
- 17:53called 10 Little Aliens, which is sort of like a military.
- 17:57Is it like, yeah, yeah, Christie, where everyone gets
- 18:00popped off? Yeah, yeah.
- 18:02And it feels very like this. And they do like an easy where
- 18:05you get introduced to each of the characters and it's a bit
- 18:07like this. What do you think of found
- 18:11footage horror movies? Oh God.
- 18:15Go back to my blockbuster The Days.
- 18:17I remember watching The Blair Witch Project, which terrified
- 18:20me because I don't do horror films and I had to leave the
- 18:23Lights summer all night, the whole thing.
- 18:27Or was there a particular moment?
- 18:28Very end of it, if you remember the Oh yeah with the girl in the
- 18:31corner. Yeah, you know, a bit I didn't
- 18:36like was the hands on the 10th? Yeah, so horror films is not my
- 18:40bag so but. I can, I recognize you.
- 18:44I can see sort of, you know, recognize all the things you
- 18:47says, like, you know, like, oh, there's a small group,
- 18:49everyone's going to die. Well, then, does Horror Doctor
- 18:53Who have the same effects on you?
- 18:55Or because it's PG13 is it? I'm a little, you know, sort of
- 18:59a bit older now. I wasn't that much young man.
- 19:02It's just that, yeah, because it isn't that sort of horrific.
- 19:06So I certainly like a visually interesting approach to doing a
- 19:11Doctor Who story, isn't it? I Can you imagine it's in the
- 19:1680s? It would be bright lights.
- 19:18Oh God, it'd be just like, I don't like Jason Miller coming
- 19:21after me, but it would just be like Warriors of the Deep.
- 19:23Yeah, but I do like the fact that he narrates the story as
- 19:28well as we're going through it. And there's there is a lot of
- 19:34atmosphere here as well. You know, you don't know what's
- 19:37going on, right? It's like, where is everybody?
- 19:39It's the dark. It's just like everything, I
- 19:43think. I love the fact also that their
- 19:46captain is a Geordie. It's nice to have regional
- 19:49accents and Dr. here, isn't it? Yeah.
- 19:53And when they say basically no earlier, later on, it's like the
- 19:56Indo Japanese Empire sort of thing, you know, that's very
- 20:01interesting sort of concept, you know, in the future.
- 20:04It's nice to know it's not a massive whitewash in the future,
- 20:06isn't it? Absolutely, yes.
- 20:08So yeah, I really, I I think it's very clever, the way we cut
- 20:15between the POV shots of the characters and then the footage
- 20:20from the cameras. I love this bit where he goes,
- 20:23not everybody calls everything space.
- 20:24It's like up yours Terry Nation have, you know, I've got a high
- 20:30degree in space medicine. Exactly, isn't it?
- 20:33It's basically I just think I'm just like no one.
- 20:36Of course, everything space is like Joe, can I interest you in
- 20:38some of these space pills? This one's bacon and eggs.
- 20:45In fact, he has a couple of lines in this, doesn't he?
- 20:47Where he's ripping at some of those sort of terribly
- 20:51oldfashioned viewpoints of the future that they used to do in
- 20:56classic. He's got a bit of Christmas back
- 21:04as well, isn't he? Oh my God, I love him so much.
- 21:08I'm not sure I could call him sexy, but.
- 21:12I have a strange taste in Minjo, So don't we all.
- 21:22Oh, it's just like it's like hello based on the siege time.
- 21:26In fact, because he is sort of counting down some of the
- 21:29cliches. I'm surprised he doesn't say
- 21:30that, doesn't he? Lots of people in a confined
- 21:32setting. Let's go.
- 21:33It's. Like let everybody goes like,
- 21:36oh, let's have the space fire once and come on that is no
- 21:42coincidence that. He says tell me why.
- 21:48Oh, I get a lot of that bit. We said he goes, Oh yeah, bit
- 21:51from Oliver goes go and set yourself.
- 21:56He loves throwing in pop culture references.
- 21:58He did it. Remember in Empress of Mars when
- 22:00he's got Bill saying every bloody movie?
- 22:06Yeah, I was. I remember watching the first
- 22:08one and I was just really aware of how interesting this looks.
- 22:12I do think as you go along you kind of get used to it so it
- 22:17loses its freshness a bit. And Joe, can I make one other
- 22:20criticism? At least it's like this.
- 22:25Looks like you know them, yeah. Is the the guest characters in
- 22:30this? They are.
- 22:33So they're well cast like most of the new series as well cast.
- 22:36But we don't really learn too much about them as we go along,
- 22:39do we not like you do with the best guest cast and dump two
- 22:43stories? So then again back in the you
- 22:46know that's the old sort of you can say is the problem of the
- 22:49new series because you only have that 45 minute episode or maybe
- 22:53like 2 parter you haven't got the time to not like in the
- 22:58original series. You know, you could have like 7
- 23:00episodes to get to know people you know.
- 23:05Is it a good thing? Is it a bad thing?
- 23:06You don't know. It's just it's different, you
- 23:08know, I think you you can do it, can't you?
- 23:10In 45 minutes, But you've got to be very economic and quickly
- 23:14introducing people and establishing who they are.
- 23:17Do you remember in like haunting of Villa Diadata when you had
- 23:19that all those ones dancing around in that room and sort of
- 23:24all gossiping and bitching about each other?
- 23:25And very quickly you knew everybody was, but you've got to
- 23:28be really clever to do it have. You got something, you know,
- 23:31just hone in exactly on them. But you know, whereas you, you
- 23:35said you've been watching the solures, didn't you?
- 23:38And like you got someone like Doctor Lawrence, you've got six
- 23:40or seven episodes of that character where you can really
- 23:43get under his skin and and learn what he's all about.
- 23:49Oh, the view of the future is horrible, but as he says, bred
- 23:52in hatcheries. You could say this is very sort
- 23:56of like anti science really, because you got them, you got
- 24:00the clones, you got the. Whole Morpheus thing about
- 24:04basically, you know sleep doesn't make any money, so we're
- 24:09going to stop you sleeping so you can make us more money.
- 24:11He's chilling that idea, isn't it Of.
- 24:15Horrible. It's really good at all.
- 24:17So I love that bit where he says hold my hands and she goes, I'm
- 24:21not scared, he goes, We've come a long way, haven't we?
- 24:27What do you think? Do you think we're heading this
- 24:30way? Like do you think if somebody
- 24:31created this where you could get by without an amount of sleep?
- 24:37Because I just, I feel, I feel like we are at a point where
- 24:41sort of every second is valuable now.
- 24:48It's, you know, it's just terrifying.
- 24:50So really, sort of the. You know, if they, I bet you,
- 24:54you know there's some mad millionaire somewhere thinking,
- 24:57oh, that sounds like a good idea He's watching this going, oh,
- 25:01that's a good idea. Stop people sleeping.
- 25:04Just think, Joe. I didn't have the slave park and
- 25:06record podcasts for 24 hours a day.
- 25:10No, don't. It's terrified.
- 25:12There's an offcomer now. But then again, this goes back
- 25:16to like beginnings of science fiction.
- 25:18It's like it's Frankenstein. The guy in this is a
- 25:21Frankenstein. He's created, his doctor says
- 25:23he's created an abomination, is what these things are.
- 25:27I like the fact that also they have this bit about where they
- 25:30keeps mentioning the gods. That's quite an interesting
- 25:33thing. You know, every time they call
- 25:35each other and they go, May the gods have favor with you.
- 25:38It's just a little peak into. It's just a little peak into
- 25:41their society in that form in the future.
- 25:44But again, that's something you've got to do in 45 minutes,
- 25:46isn't it? To to suggest a wider universe.
- 25:51And he does it, you know, the fact you know they're all people
- 25:54of color. You know they've got the Indo
- 25:56Japanese. You know it's not, you said it's
- 25:58nice to have like, you know, not whole, you know, totally white
- 26:03cast or does he call in 474? They're just numbers.
- 26:08Yeah, the grunt is 474. Yeah.
- 26:11Hasn't even got a name. That's how you know.
- 26:13You know that's how the human. They're not.
- 26:15They're not human. They are basically, as I said,
- 26:17they're sort of. It's a cynical look at the
- 26:20future, Joe, isn't it? I think if you pair this up with
- 26:24something like oxygen, the future's not somewhere I'd want
- 26:27to be. If we're getting rid of sleep
- 26:33and we're paying, you know, we have to pay for oxygen, that we
- 26:36just need the one story now where people have to pay for
- 26:38sunlight, you know? Oh, so I love the fact you
- 26:44you've went off to a different color though.
- 26:46Yeah, you're going to die, right?
- 26:49Never split up. And I like about how they cut so
- 26:52they don't have to animate how she gets dragged in.
- 26:55No, she just goes, doesn't she? The tendrils they grabbed out of
- 26:57me like snakes. No, we didn't have to animate
- 27:00that. That's good.
- 27:01This was great. I thought this was really
- 27:03quirky. The 50s girls singing Mr.
- 27:06Sandman. Oh, you know, we could be a duo,
- 27:13you know, You ready? Hamster with a blunt pen knife?
- 27:20Yeah, me singing that. But you know, they do use the
- 27:24song brilliantly later when the fellas like it's trying to get
- 27:26in the door, isn't it? And the computers going sing the
- 27:29song and the monsters come in as well.
- 27:33That just shows why work parties are like bad idea.
- 27:36I can attest to that. But for.
- 27:41Other reasons? Oh, the regrets.
- 27:46You snob the wrong person in the back alley.
- 27:49And before you know it well, your reputation's in the gutter.
- 27:53Never. I mean, mom was never out the
- 27:56gutter, so don't worry about that, you know?
- 28:00What do you think about the Sonic Shades?
- 28:04Hello. All right.
- 28:05That's quite funny, really, aren't they?
- 28:08Midlife crisis, I'll tell you. Yeah.
- 28:11Hoodies. Shades.
- 28:12They'll have a motorbike next, yeah, I'd love that.
- 28:15You know, it became out the TARDIS it.
- 28:16Came out the TARDIS, so it comes out the times for the
- 28:21Harley-Davidson. This to me is, you know, like
- 28:23the whole thing about this series is clever.
- 28:26He's becoming the Doctor, yeah. This is another bit of it
- 28:30because she's like, you know, what's the Doctor do?
- 28:32He tries to talk to people. He doesn't shoot them.
- 28:34That's his whole thing. You know, He's talking, not
- 28:37fighting, that's. What she's doing there, she's
- 28:40doing a very doctory thing because she is basically trying
- 28:43to be the Doctor now, isn't she? She's becoming.
- 28:47Well, they're very. That's terrific.
- 28:50Yeah, the way it's and I like the bit as well where he goes.
- 28:52This is where I come in, really. Mr. Jack-in-the-box.
- 28:58Yeah, the the next episode is Face the Raven, isn't it?
- 29:01And obviously we really lean into that there where she's
- 29:04being. Yeah, she's playing about with
- 29:07Danger Clara. I mean, you know, it started
- 29:10really in flatline, didn't it? Where she basically says I am
- 29:12the doctor and then they even had that fucking nerve to put
- 29:17her in the title sequence as well.
- 29:21I'll tell you what, Moffetty loves putting my strings.
- 29:27Oh God, this is so. And then, look, I chose this
- 29:29very Pretty Woman to say this speech in in a very clear
- 29:33accent. We should basically think about
- 29:36it. It's like, Oh yeah, well, we
- 29:37could drug you up to keep you awake, but no, we're just going
- 29:40to stick waters in your head. I do not think this is
- 29:44implausible. I feel as if that technology
- 29:46existed. You know, you hear stories about
- 29:49people out in, people out in China and things like that, that
- 29:53spend sleep in their offices and just work themselves to death.
- 29:59You know, this is not a new thing.
- 30:00I mean basically during this, because my history had during
- 30:04the Second World War, most of the German army were basically
- 30:08high as a kite. They were basically being fed
- 30:11stimulants just to keep them going, you know.
- 30:14So this is not a new thing. It's probably not.
- 30:16It probably goes back into ancient history where they were,
- 30:19you know, they were giving some sort of like herb to people to
- 30:22keep them away, to make them better fighters and everything.
- 30:26It's just. This is much more sort of
- 30:29technologically based sort of thing, but it's nothing new.
- 30:33It's just the way they were that terms and conditions apply.
- 30:36Yeah, that's great. You know, it's a lot because I
- 30:41did the Crimson Aura the other day, right?
- 30:43He's a lot wittier than I've ever given him credit for Mark
- 30:45Gatis. You think that's so real, you
- 30:48know, looking in the back? You know, you look at all the
- 30:52stuff, he's up, you know, League of Gentleman, which is very, you
- 30:54know, that's funny, but it's exceptionally dark.
- 30:57Oh man, it's twisted. I love it.
- 30:59I know. I love it too.
- 31:00Do you remember when they they they take those animals and
- 31:04stitch them together? Oh.
- 31:07My God, what's you know, these. Oh God, They should be let out,
- 31:11those four, should they? They're very sick to little
- 31:15people, but the way their career is divided there and Shear Smith
- 31:20and God, what's his name? Pemberton did inside #9 and
- 31:24basically Gate is 1 and did Doctor Who in Sherlock.
- 31:29Yeah, usually they're two sorts of bits of the sort of where
- 31:34they started, went on, and yet both massively popular.
- 31:38You can't say either one, any of them.
- 31:41I like this because he goes. He's quite chuffed.
- 31:44Do you think that's clever, what you've done?
- 31:45He goes, yeah, but you're really fucked up.
- 31:49Nobody can do graveness like Capote.
- 31:52You've created an abomination. That's a very you can imagine.
- 32:00You imagine poetry saying that, can't you?
- 32:03Yeah, I think there's a lot of poetry in Capote's performance,
- 32:06you know, especially The Hair Come series 10.
- 32:09You fall. I mean the the the dress and
- 32:12everything sleep does to go look like.
- 32:14Is this a kidding face? No.
- 32:17So are we saying you could basically make a dog food
- 32:19monster out? Anything Shadows, statues, I
- 32:23boogers. I know that, you know, I just,
- 32:27yeah, basically I saw the monster suit that they had for
- 32:32this at the Doctor Who experienced in Cardiff.
- 32:35And I'm telling you now, they've done a great job directing it
- 32:37because it wasn't scary as hell in person.
- 32:41Was it Murka bad, or was it better than that I saw about
- 32:44this elongated mouth? Yeah, it looked a bit like the
- 32:47plasmatons. A bit like I saw a crusty turd,
- 32:50you know? Yeah, sorry.
- 32:54But I think I think they do a good enough job of giving you
- 32:57glimpses in this. Yeah, I like the body goes
- 33:00digested. That reminds me if you know that
- 33:02bit in into the Dalek where he says watch out.
- 33:05She did it on the top later, so talk.
- 33:10Talk about dark. Yeah, we could be very dark
- 33:12about basically deaths currently.
- 33:14So it's like, yeah, it is, but like, Colin Baker could be like
- 33:20that as well. You're right.
- 33:21You know what? There's so much of every Doctor
- 33:22in him. That's what I said.
- 33:24That's why I love him so much. That's why I said there's so
- 33:26much you can see. That's why he's like the he's
- 33:30like every bit. You get every bit of who and you
- 33:32like, squish them all together and you're like, that's why I
- 33:36love him. So that's the sort of sarcasm.
- 33:38I think Davidson could be extremely sarcastic.
- 33:42And he's got he's a bit Machiavellian as well when he
- 33:44likes to Esther McCoy. And Trouten was very like,
- 33:48Everyone thinks Trouten sort of like lovely and you know, cuddly
- 33:51and everything, but he can be a bugger at times and all so.
- 33:55That's why I do think that he's so good because he knows the he
- 33:59knows the history. You know he was a fan.
- 34:01You see those brilliant pictures of him with like Tom and like
- 34:05John poetry. He's got the biggest grin in the
- 34:08world and he know you know he's this is this is as I've said
- 34:13before this is the role he's wanted to do all his life.
- 34:19Did you did you hear about what happened with Capote and The
- 34:24Husbands of River Song? So essentially the that was
- 34:30where he was going to bow out. That was going to be Stephen
- 34:32Moffitt's last story. I think the BBC lost faith in
- 34:36this era and effectively the next season, the Chris Chibnall
- 34:42season was going to kick in there.
- 34:43But he was doing broad search. So they did serious sense.
- 34:46So they had, they basically said to Capote, you're out and then
- 34:49they said no way we need to do another season and you're
- 34:51contractually obliged. So you're going to do it.
- 34:55And I think This is why Peter is a bit reluctant 1 to come back
- 35:00and two, to be honest, to talk about it.
- 35:03No, I don't. I don't either.
- 35:05There's been some things that come out in the BBC about him
- 35:08that I ohh not nice ohh tell me. Yeah.
- 35:13And I was just thinking, you don't do that, I mean.
- 35:18Hopefully he might change his mind, I would like to think, but
- 35:21he doesn't need to. He's got nothing to prove to
- 35:23anybody. He's a prestige talent.
- 35:26He's probably the most talent, yeah.
- 35:29He's got a bloody Oscar, He's got Bafta's.
- 35:32He doesn't need your shit. I think when people react to him
- 35:38giving interviews, saying about, you know, how cheap the sits
- 35:40were, things like that, I think he's a bit miffed and he's got
- 35:43every right to be. He's got.
- 35:44Absolutely. Every right to be because
- 35:45everyone says like oh, you know you get you get people from the
- 35:48BBC saying oh we don't think he was very good, fuck you, you
- 35:55know fuck you BBC. You know, we don't want to do,
- 36:01you know? You know you don't want to do to
- 36:03him what they did to Colin. You know, the God Colin came
- 36:06back effectively what they were going to do, they sacked him
- 36:09effectively. And it's only the fact that the
- 36:14chippers wasn't ready that that he had that chance to bow out
- 36:17with a regeneration story. Although, you know, had it been
- 36:21the end that bit with the happily ever after in human
- 36:23river love that ended? I do love that, Sonia.
- 36:28But then again, season 10 was brilliant as well.
- 36:31You'd never have Bill. Oh, OK, imagine so this one.
- 36:35Season companions, you know, they're the best.
- 36:37Donna, Bill, Martha. They're all my favorites.
- 36:41Yes, yeah. Oh God, he's just got eaten.
- 36:46That's because I love. He's going, he's going, Mr.
- 36:49Sammon, bring me a dream. This is so horror, isn't it?
- 36:54Wow. Right now.
- 36:56I'm safe. I'm safe.
- 36:57I'm safe. Oh, look, I'm all right.
- 36:59I'll get to find you now. And they're all locked out.
- 37:03Monster it. Was the 1st, Yeah.
- 37:10Do you know? Honestly, I'm being genuine.
- 37:12When I was out, I was very surprised at how good this was.
- 37:16I know. I don't think I rated it very
- 37:18much either. No, I know I didn't.
- 37:20I think it's probably one of those that you do have to watch
- 37:23again. You know, it's when so much is
- 37:25happening. I think it's one of those well
- 37:27as well. I think you know, me and my back
- 37:30is sort of a bit campier, sort of heightened Doctor Who,
- 37:33whereas this is quite serious, this story.
- 37:36Yeah, there weren't many laughs. A lot of a lot of murder, but
- 37:41not a lot of laughs. That's so dark to go.
- 37:44She don't have the authority? No, I'm in charge.
- 37:49Marty's bloke in the room. Me.
- 37:52Well, I must have the other thing as well.
- 37:53Like Pertwig, Capody knows he's the smartest bloke in the room,
- 37:56didn't he? So I do like as well the Erasmus
- 38:03here, they call him out, don't they?
- 38:05Before the end of the episode and say, you know, this was your
- 38:08plan all along, wasn't it? Was to, was it to what?
- 38:11To take the Book of Monsters away with them.
- 38:13Yeah, because basically it's one of those he's one very, very
- 38:17long line of. People who decided to side with
- 38:21the aliens against humanity and it never goes well, that's
- 38:25right, he said. Then they say they spoke to me.
- 38:27The voice is in my head. That's never a good sign.
- 38:34Yeah, look, they are. They are expertly keeping those
- 38:37costumes out of short. They probably go, Oh yeah,
- 38:42remember what we is of the day. Remember what?
- 38:44That lucky. I meant the ghost.
- 38:47Poor slop. Like, let's keep the lights off.
- 38:50Have you ever had much of A fear of sleep buggers?
- 38:54No. But you know what?
- 38:55I was watching this this morning, right?
- 38:57I rubbed my eye and a little bit came out and I went, oh God,
- 39:02it's going to get me. But it is doing that Muffety
- 39:07thing of something that you, you know, like shadows, like
- 39:12statues, you rub your eyes every day and some of that stuff comes
- 39:15out, doesn't. It you suddenly think, oh, how
- 39:19much of that over a lifetime, enough to make one of those
- 39:23monsters? And I know.
- 39:25And then, because he's compressed sleep, you're getting
- 39:28all that sleep in one go. Bigger monsters.
- 39:33It's clever. It's clever, yeah.
- 39:37No, I'm no, I'm not online. We have to go after them, the
- 39:45doctor says. Don't be ridiculous.
- 39:53What the hell are those noises? Oh, they're in a larder, that's
- 39:56why. It's about to go.
- 39:58Did you see that? Big saw?
- 39:59Massive hacksaw, Yeah? Oh God.
- 40:02Yeah, that car that could have come in quite handy though, you
- 40:04know? Back away at that booger
- 40:07monster. I can't stop calling them
- 40:09boogers. That's what they are.
- 40:12That's what. They are, yeah.
- 40:16Oh, listen to him. He's doing that melancholy.
- 40:17All those sad songs, Clara. All those lullabies.
- 40:22Filthy stupid humans. That's a great line.
- 40:30Listen to that. It's an inconvenience to be
- 40:32bartered away. Sleep.
- 40:34And I think we would, we would if we could.
- 40:38I mean people, you know, the people you know everyone feels
- 40:40like when they can't sleep or if you get you know you have tail
- 40:44with me, don't sleep how bad it is for.
- 40:46And I have insomnia, so I'm up every night.
- 40:49So if I get, if I sort of only have 4 hours, I'll get a bit
- 40:53irrational and emotional, you know?
- 40:58Yeah, stop that. Yeah, Stop.
- 41:01Stop getting all poetic, mate. What we're going to do.
- 41:04The dialogue is so much stronger than I remember it being because
- 41:10I do think Gates is. I mean, I do.
- 41:11I do like his script. It's a lot better than others.
- 41:14I do think he can write very functional dialogue.
- 41:17I just think this is a bit of cut above.
- 41:21I'm hoping, Joe, we're going to convince people to go back and
- 41:23give this another go. I hope so too.
- 41:26So even though we're just going to get people going.
- 41:29They're they're bonkers. Oh, cutie, no, don't go down
- 41:39there. You're too cute to die.
- 41:47And you know what? They finally done that thing.
- 41:49Because I was watching one the other day, right?
- 41:51Where, you know, when people talk to each other on screens,
- 41:54but they never look at the camera that would be above the
- 41:56screen. They always look like as if
- 41:57they're looking straight into the screen, where they put the
- 42:00camera in a place there where you can actually look straight
- 42:02at the person. The eye line is right.
- 42:07I know it's a little detail, but it does irritate me.
- 42:17I'm surprised there wasn't more of that sort of blare, which you
- 42:19know when the camera sort of wobbles about all over the place
- 42:22and and you're a bit disoriented, it's quite steady.
- 42:26Well, it was you just had the bit where they turn off the
- 42:28grass shield and it does the Star Trek wobbly activity.
- 42:34I love the fact he doesn't notice what she said.
- 42:38Don't have helmet cameras. It's like I'll just go on, don't
- 42:47they? So.
- 42:48Suggest later on, though, isn't what we're looking for.
- 42:51It's the dust. It's not the people's eyes,
- 42:53Yeah, because the dust is like everywhere.
- 42:58I thought I can. I always thought Rasmussen was
- 43:00in that first of all. That reminds me so much of
- 43:03remembers the Daleks as well. But I thought that was how he
- 43:06got round the station. I thought it was him.
- 43:08I thought it was a scientist in there going around, so you know,
- 43:13to stop them seeing him. It's like the song ba ba ba ba
- 43:18ba ba ba. Oh, come on, it's like the site
- 43:28lure is all over again. I'm glad somebody said.
- 43:31Oh no, he does say it in the Sea Devils, doesn't he?
- 43:33He goes. It's a misnomer, yeah, and
- 43:36that's wrong as well, I believe. Did you hear that he goes?
- 43:41You said it when 1.83 minutes ago and it's.
- 43:53Like there's been. There's obviously a lot of
- 43:56running around, but there hasn't actually been a great deal for
- 43:58Clara's too, because I think the Doctors got all the best lines.
- 44:02Like, I know Clara wasn't supposed to be in this season.
- 44:04I think sometimes you can tell she's been inserted into an
- 44:07episode. I wonder if that's why we got
- 44:13the evil Bonnie, you know, because Clara was never really
- 44:15supposed to be in that as I gone too far.
- 44:17So they write her out an episode while then bring in.
- 44:21Evil Jenna Coleman, Yeah. Then again, it could have been
- 44:24like the the scheduling, you know, like they the Doctor light
- 44:28episodes, so they have them somewhere else, you know, so.
- 44:32That's true. Yeah.
- 44:34Oh, there we go. They're blind, right?
- 44:37Aren't they? No.
- 44:38They. Yeah.
- 44:39They say they're blind, yeah, but they must be able to hear
- 44:42because it goes quiet. And also later in the bit later
- 44:44on they get distracted by the holograms.
- 44:48They can. Obviously they're blind, but
- 44:50they can here because otherwise they wouldn't be able to find
- 44:54people. So I was trying to think that I
- 44:57got a bit confused with that I was going whether they smell.
- 45:02I booked monsters with a keen sense of smell do.
- 45:07You know what this does remind me of?
- 45:08Actually, I don't know if I'm mad.
- 45:10This really reminds me of of an 80s Eric's Award.
- 45:13Doctor Who. It's serious.
- 45:15It's a bit macho. It's a lot of.
- 45:20Yeah, there's not too much comedy in it.
- 45:22There's a little bit, but not too much.
- 45:25But also there's a there's a big bold idea.
- 45:28It's hard. And a lot of those eighty
- 45:30stories do have big, strong science fiction concepts as
- 45:33well. But it's done with a budget, you
- 45:36know, And they turn the lights down.
- 45:45We Clara tiptoeing about. See.
- 45:50Look beyond sort of running away from the monsters.
- 45:53Now This is why you need that big twist at the end, because
- 45:57what else can we do Now, in this episode, they run away, they get
- 46:00in the TARDIS, they blow the ship off, you know?
- 46:03Well, that's just your bug Standard and scifi, isn't it?
- 46:07Yeah. Hey, we won.
- 46:11Or so we thought, 447. 40 Doesn't she say?
- 46:20Does she say something about being pretty?
- 46:25Yeah. But again, like this is all this
- 46:31whole narrative that we've been watching is what's his name,
- 46:36Rasmussen? Is that his name?
- 46:39Rasmussen? Yes.
- 46:40Yeah, it's been him creating this narrative to keep us
- 46:44entertained whilst this thing infects us.
- 46:47Yeah, it's basically just to keep us looking.
- 46:50Even though he said, like, I found all this stuff, this is
- 46:55what happened. Watch this.
- 46:57And we're going, oh, we want to know what happened.
- 47:00But the fact that we want to know what happened is what is
- 47:05going to get us in the end. It's all curious.
- 47:08It's our curiosity. And it's like the doctor's
- 47:12curious because it's like, you know, he wants to know what's
- 47:15going on. We all want to know what's going
- 47:17on. And it's that curiosity that is
- 47:19going to be our downfall when you think about it.
- 47:22Love the fact that he has that line about, you know, you
- 47:25thought this was an alibi, but it's not.
- 47:27It was a plan. But that's that's a good line at
- 47:30the end where you suddenly go, oh shit, what's going on?
- 47:37Here's a doctor say, right, there's a doctor explaining that
- 47:39there's footage of everybody. So this explains how this could
- 47:42come to be, but as well. Like he knows that we like her,
- 47:46you know? A good scary story as well.
- 47:50So he's put it together in a way where once we started watching,
- 47:53we ain't going to turn off because we want to see you
- 47:55survive. It's a mystery as well it is.
- 47:58It's like a horror mystery. It's like, you know, we've got
- 48:01to be evil, but we want to know what we it's like, well, what
- 48:03what the hell is happening? Who is doing?
- 48:05He said. Who's done?
- 48:06It really is. Who's going to survive?
- 48:08You know? It is a combination of quite a
- 48:11few things. You know you got the.
- 48:12Same it's it's our curiosity and our thrill seeking.
- 48:17That is our downfall. Exactly.
- 48:24Oh, look at that. Him talking about him talking
- 48:27about with all the mirrors going backwards, That's really clever.
- 48:31That reminds me of that bit in Spaceballs.
- 48:32Do you Have you seen that? I can't remember.
- 48:37Yeah, so. He pauses the movie after I saw
- 48:39the movie and he says This Is Us in the movie now at this point,
- 48:43you know? I'm not cleverer than people
- 48:48Give it credit. See, It's Clara.
- 49:00She still thinks there's a way out of this, and actually the
- 49:02only way out is for them to duck out the story.
- 49:07Yeah, but he's got, she's got faith in the Doctor, so and
- 49:11we've all got faith in the Doctor cuz he's the man who
- 49:13serves everything. And that's her downfall in the
- 49:16next one because she takes on that tattoo.
- 49:19And says, yeah, I know you're going to be able to save me.
- 49:22Don't worry. No.
- 49:25Yeah, no. And she's cuz she wants.
- 49:27She's becoming the doctor. She's taking more and more of
- 49:31his characteristic. She thinks she's gonna solve
- 49:35everything. But anyway, this is good because
- 49:38it shows that he doesn't. You know, she should have looked
- 49:40and we didn't solve it last time, mate.
- 49:44Weirdly enough, the season makes the decision.
- 49:47Instead of punishing her for that sort of arrogance, it
- 49:51actually makes her the Doctor, and she goes off in the TARDIS
- 49:54in the end. Very strange ending, Joe.
- 50:01You know that. Yeah, should have crashed her
- 50:05into the 1st and create the dinosaurs again.
- 50:10Send her down with Andric. There's that coffin again.
- 50:12I'm getting remembrance of the Daleks, Vibes from that.
- 50:15You know it's a bit Castro velvet.
- 50:20Isn't that what they carry him about?
- 50:23It's the Zero Cabinet. Yeah.
- 50:28If it's not the Sandman, then who is it?
- 50:30So we're still doing mysteries. I have an idea, A very nasty
- 50:36idea. Then again, it's very
- 50:40scooby-doo. It's just like Professor
- 50:43Rasmussen. They should have done a reveal
- 50:49for you pesky kids. Pesky but cute kids.
- 51:00How do you feel about the imminent destruction of the
- 51:03entire universe happening because the Doctor failed to
- 51:06save the day? A bit miffed.
- 51:12Look, we've been watching this, all right?
- 51:14We're we're I oh, we're doomed. I love Joe.
- 51:18We're doomed. Yeah, I'm going to say it again.
- 51:27I'm going to say it again. We are just doing a lot of
- 51:30running around now and I think that might be some people's
- 51:34objection that that the sort of the middle 20 minutes, it is
- 51:38just the same thing happening over and over again.
- 51:41Monsters corridors, a few lines, Monsters corridors, a few lines.
- 51:47Maybe that's people's problem with this.
- 51:48This could have been six episodes.
- 51:52Yeah, Jesus mentioned that. Imagine that.
- 51:59But when they do sign the length of 6 episodes now like the you
- 52:03could say Face the Raven Heaven, The Scent Hell Bent is the
- 52:07length of a six parter. They sort of switch it out the
- 52:11night from one episode to another.
- 52:13You couldn't drag 6 episodes out of this.
- 52:22Oh this is it. This is where he admits it.
- 52:25There's no point. See, I've heard people say that
- 52:28he's miscast, but I didn't think he was.
- 52:30I thought he was pretty good. Yeah, sure, he's good actually,
- 52:34you know, probably going we have.
- 52:35He's only in it cuz he's Mark Gatiss, his mate.
- 52:38And he's he's a respected actor. Oh my God.
- 52:42Yeah, so. Did you ever see him in the BBV
- 52:45adventures? He's an awesome and he's in the
- 52:53Devil of Winterborne. You know he gets his cock out
- 52:55and out. I couldn't believe it.
- 52:58Yeah, there was nothing to shout him about.
- 53:00I'll tell you. Sorry re shit, Smith.
- 53:06I was young when I watched that, all right?
- 53:09And impressionable. Oh God, it's like this.
- 53:12Terrible, terrible videos we used to went to blockbusters
- 53:17like softcore porn. Oh dear me, you had softcore?
- 53:20Porn or blockbusters, yeah. It wasn't really.
- 53:24It was never 18. It wasn't like hard cut.
- 53:26It was like the base of them were like terrible, like rip
- 53:30offs of it was like the Erotic Witch Project and stuff like
- 53:36that. Oh God, they were bad.
- 53:37I'll tell you. The one I always remember was
- 53:39because it was one. It was called Mistress of
- 53:41Frankenstein and they had a pants of my horse in it.
- 53:47No, they wasn't doing anything sexual, but it's something like
- 53:49I just now I just thought, well, they obviously couldn't afford a
- 53:52horse. Yeah, I've got a B movie on my
- 53:55show called Nymphoid, Barbarian and Dinosaur.
- 53:57Hell, I want to tell you what she's up to.
- 54:01All right. Yeah, there's none of that
- 54:09malarkey going on here, but I do like it when the rugs pulled out
- 54:15from under the doctor. Yes.
- 54:17You think you're so smart, mate? He's usually a little ahead,
- 54:20isn't he? Yeah, And maybe that's what
- 54:24people don't like. It is because they don't like
- 54:27the Doctor to win. Yeah, they don't like him
- 54:31losing. So did.
- 54:33You remember what he said there? He said that Coffin's patient
- 54:36zero. Well, the 0 imperative was a.
- 54:41Mark Gate is written BBV Adventure all about Patient
- 54:44Zero. I think he's even referencing
- 54:46that. Have you ever seen Lost in
- 54:50Space? Because I've got it.
- 54:53Lost in Space is one of my absolute guilty pleasures.
- 54:57Oh, I've got, I've got it downloaded.
- 54:59I have to. I'm gearing myself up to watch
- 55:01it. Oh my God.
- 55:02Sophie Aldrin. Katie Manning Girl power.
- 55:05It's it's incredible. Yes.
- 55:09Quite different from this, you know.
- 55:11Does he look a bit like? No.
- 55:16Yeah, the cost. The costume is not he's very
- 55:19not. He's very so.
- 55:21Dissimilar, Yeah. Oh no.
- 55:23Now they're showing those dreadful costumes.
- 55:25So you can actually see the costume now.
- 55:28It is very Plasmaton, isn't it? It is very sort of.
- 55:33It looks more solid than you'd think.
- 55:36Yeah. They look, they're really cool.
- 55:38When they start to sort of, you know, turn to dust, that looks
- 55:42very dust. Yeah, I think they just, they
- 55:43look a bit too solid. I don't they have to be solid
- 55:46otherwise, you know, you couldn't wear them.
- 55:48But I mean, nowadays they probably CGI them, wouldn't they
- 55:53say? When I say run, run, he just
- 55:56said. Hey Sandy, I just thought is
- 56:04that reference to Sandy to sand based?
- 56:07Could be. Could it respond a lot?
- 56:10So now they're straight off in the TARDIS now, aren't they?
- 56:13You see Clara with the key open the door, They're trying to get
- 56:17to the TARDIS, so it's like. Cuz they basically know there's
- 56:24no way I like this now, don't they?
- 56:27She does the she does the just done that.
- 56:31Why do you have to shoot everybody thing that the Doctor
- 56:33does all the time. Yeah.
- 56:35You know, it's like, you know, I'll be shoot first.
- 56:39Some people said Jody Whisker was the first female doctor you
- 56:42know, but maybe it was Jenna Coleman.
- 56:51I do like that song coming in. It's like, you can hear, you can
- 56:57hear. It's literally you can see the
- 56:58cogs were in his brain, can't you?
- 57:00It's like that's not compute. And he's just like when she says
- 57:05it's a story, he's going, it's like, yeah.
- 57:09Yeah, he's figuring it out. Yeah.
- 57:11You can hear like the basically all the wheels are sort of going
- 57:14in his brain. He's just like.
- 57:17Alternative. So now it's basically like we
- 57:18need to chip out of this story. Now this story is going to be
- 57:22used as a weapon, and we cannot be a part of it anymore.
- 57:25No, we, you know, we are. We are we.
- 57:29We're helping this story to go on.
- 57:31So it's quite matter actually, isn't it?
- 57:37It is basically because we all like this sort of thing and it's
- 57:40the fact that we like this sort of thing.
- 57:41It's what's going to get us in the end.
- 57:43And that's great. The idea of weaponizing Doctor
- 57:46Who to murder a bunch of people, that's it's very not sorry very
- 57:52not gaitist. That's what I like about it, is
- 57:54that it proves he can be totally off kilter.
- 57:58Yeah, he probably was. He's probably answering all his
- 58:03critics that said, you know, oh, you know, you do the same thing.
- 58:06Kisses for the past. Nostalgia and things like that,
- 58:12you know? Unfortunately, none of this
- 58:15makes any sense. That's a bit.
- 58:19And it doesn't really until he explains it in the last thing.
- 58:21But the Doctor's not Privy to that.
- 58:23No, Doctor doesn't know you know?
- 58:27Does the Doctor ever know? Doesn't like, does it, you know,
- 58:32He says. Has this gone out?
- 58:34It's always gone out before they blow, you know.
- 58:36Do they blow up the you know? I don't know.
- 58:38So you know. Do you remember in the Forest of
- 58:43the Night? I'll say that climax is on the
- 58:47worst last scene ever when that little girl comes out of the
- 58:51Pixie dust and it's like Oh well, this is not completely
- 58:55opposite of that. I'm perfectly convinced this is
- 58:57the best scene in the entire episode.
- 58:59I hope you enjoyed the. Show I did try and make it
- 59:04exciting. All those scary bits.
- 59:07It's basically saying you know it's your fault.
- 59:09You watch this, I make this story.
- 59:12This is the sort of stuff that you love.
- 59:15This could even be a comment, you know, from those people that
- 59:17say, you know, watching TV like scary TV.
- 59:21It great effect, isn't it? Creepy as fuck, Yeah, and it
- 59:27looks so that you know. That's the line where he goes.
- 59:32You will show this film to your family, won't you?
- 59:35And everyone. And we can all be together.
- 59:38Dust too. Dust.
- 59:43And he laughed, doesn't he? Oh, no.
- 59:46Excuse me. You've got something in your
- 59:48eye. In the corner of your eye.
- 59:57That's really great smile on his face.
- 59:59Look. And and I don't know, like this
- 1:00:04was the first time ever we'd never had the Doctor Who title,
- 1:00:07music or closing credits because the whole thing is this story
- 1:00:12created by him. Yeah, it's not, it's not a
- 1:00:15Doctor Who episode. It's what he's it's he has put
- 1:00:18together, he's put together a Doctor Who.
- 1:00:23It's almost like fanfish. It's like a fan video.
- 1:00:26He's like a fan video. He's put for all the things that
- 1:00:29we all love about Doctor Who, you know, mysteries, horror.
- 1:00:33He's literally put that all together knowing that we all
- 1:00:35love it. Based under siege Red Shirts.
- 1:00:40Exactly. That's very clever.
- 1:00:44Maybe he's specifically gearing this little Doctor Who fans, you
- 1:00:47know. It's just like, yeah, I'll try.
- 1:00:51Enjoy that. Well, look, I mean, now we've
- 1:00:54said many things that we loved about this.
- 1:00:56You know how this works. You've listened to enough of
- 1:00:58these. We've got to find three reasons
- 1:01:01a piece why we would recommend sleeping more to that very
- 1:01:04cynical audience that hates it. So I'm just watching this.
- 1:01:10Sorry. Will you stop watching Sleep?
- 1:01:14No, I'll sleep them more. Face the Raven.
- 1:01:16It's your end. You've got.
- 1:01:17You're controlling the bloody thing, don't you?
- 1:01:19There we go. I've stopped.
- 1:01:22I've stopped the share. Come on, you're 1st and I'll go
- 1:01:28second, Peter. Capaldi OK Why?
- 1:01:37I've thought of reasons. I've said before, he's just, I
- 1:01:40think he's great as the Doctor. He's just there's the, he's
- 1:01:45literally what you would take if you were to.
- 1:01:47You know, you've got a bit of every single Doctor that came
- 1:01:50before, You know, you'd mix them all up, put them out and you go
- 1:01:54boof. They are.
- 1:02:01He's such a brilliant actor. You know, he's proved it time.
- 1:02:05You know, even before Doctor Who, he's definitely like he's a
- 1:02:11I would say he's an underrated actor because I think everyone
- 1:02:13says he's a great actor. I.
- 1:02:15Think he's for that. He's very sort of like Trout
- 1:02:18was. I mean Trout was a very well
- 1:02:20known actor not really doing. He wasn't doing star parts and
- 1:02:26you know, basically even character parts.
- 1:02:29He was in character parts, which I think you know.
- 1:02:33The most, I think the best actors, the ones who do
- 1:02:35character pass because they're the ones you know, they have the
- 1:02:37most very careers and everything.
- 1:02:40You know, he's not, he's not the lead, he's not a leading man
- 1:02:43type, you know, even if it has been.
- 1:02:46But it's just something about him that you look at him and
- 1:02:50just think you are perfect for that role.
- 1:02:53And you know, look, he's given a leading role here.
- 1:02:57And you know, look at the end of the Zigon 2 part.
- 1:03:00That speech he gives, or you know, heaven, sin, or the speech
- 1:03:04he gives the doctor falls, and you.
- 1:03:07Know you know that man, God, he knows that lacks.
- 1:03:11We were very lucky. We were exceptionally lucky and
- 1:03:14I don't think hopefully one day he'll be far more appreciated
- 1:03:20that I think he has been. But you know, I think hopefully
- 1:03:24one day you know we'll go back and go.
- 1:03:27We did some, you know, you know. We should really be really
- 1:03:34thankful for what we got, so we are not worthy we.
- 1:03:38Are not worthy. OK, so I'm going to say it is
- 1:03:43Mark Gatis playing against type and writing a really
- 1:03:47experimental story. I think it entirely works
- 1:03:50because I do think there's a lot of running around in the middle,
- 1:03:53but the premise is great. The opening and the ending are
- 1:03:59really memorable scenes and the fact that we're going to die
- 1:04:04because of watching it is a is a wonderfully chilling idea for a
- 1:04:08Doctor Who story. Oh God, am I good at this.
- 1:04:14The atmosphere is very good, very unusual.
- 1:04:19It is your, you could say what it's just the base on the siege,
- 1:04:22but it's, you know, it's very amused, but, you know, you feel
- 1:04:26it's very oppressive. It's dark.
- 1:04:29It's like. What you imagine a space
- 1:04:32station, one of those nice spangly sorts.
- 1:04:34It's what we're saying earlier. It's a sort of deep space, 9
- 1:04:37space, you know, really it's one of those, you know, it's not,
- 1:04:41you know, it's hope for high tech.
- 1:04:42It's grungy. You know it's not.
- 1:04:44It's lived in. It's not 1 of those really well
- 1:04:47lit as well, you know. Writing is incredible.
- 1:04:50So yeah, I'll suggest everybody goes back and watches Warriors
- 1:04:55of the Deep and then watches this.
- 1:04:59Maybe not. My second one is.
- 1:05:03I'm so sorry to have chosen this one, but it's the very cute God
- 1:05:07in this who almost makes it through the story, and the fact
- 1:05:11that he is gorgeous does not ruin my enjoyment at all.
- 1:05:15It's. Just a bonus.
- 1:05:17So it frequently is you. Know.
- 1:05:28I just, I don't know. You go next and think OK well
- 1:05:36I'm I'm. I've got one that I could
- 1:05:38probably throw at you. Yeah, OK.
- 1:05:41And that is all of the sort of clever references to the past.
- 1:05:45Yes, That's. A good one, yeah, I do like
- 1:05:48those. It's just like weird little
- 1:05:49things, like, you know, the whole sorts of no one calls
- 1:05:51anything space and the siloions. Area and sort of like, you know,
- 1:05:57on my hand just sort of like you know every little little things
- 1:06:01like that. We should could say, oh it's a
- 1:06:03bit indulgeon but no, you know, he's he's lived for you know how
- 1:06:09many thousands of years he's going to go back and go oh, you
- 1:06:12know that reminds me of this. You know we all do it all the
- 1:06:15time. It's not unusual.
- 1:06:16You go back and you say all that stuff.
- 1:06:19I remember that, or this, that and the other so.
- 1:06:23Yeah, in the same breath though, you know, like, I think it's
- 1:06:26subtle enough that if you don't get the reference, it's.
- 1:06:29Not man down your throat, oh baby, they can almost throw
- 1:06:31away, but they are throw away. But if you know you're like us,
- 1:06:35you go. You mean the best space Pirates?
- 1:06:39I mean points just for that. I know points.
- 1:06:41Doesn't anyone ever mention the Space Pirates in any.
- 1:06:48My last one then, is going to be and I want it.
- 1:06:50I was going to say the last thing, but I think that probably
- 1:06:53falls under my thing about him being experimental.
- 1:06:56So I'm going to say the quirky but bold move to make I hooker
- 1:07:04the basis of a Doctor Who monsters now.
- 1:07:06I think the costumes are great. I do think they're shot well and
- 1:07:10I do think they do manage to get a number of good scares out of
- 1:07:13them in this. Even a lot of jump scares on it,
- 1:07:17you know what I mean? It's bigger.
- 1:07:19He, he writes the horror. So, you know, the horror cliche
- 1:07:23is very well. He puts them in the right
- 1:07:25places, you know, so we get the they all split up and we're
- 1:07:29going to die, you know, I sort of you said, the fellow said you
- 1:07:32oh, I'm safe now, you know. Never say that.
- 1:07:36And then you turn around and the bloody monsters right there and
- 1:07:39great beer that I still think that scene where he's he's been
- 1:07:42told to sing that Ruddy song and he knows the monster's coming
- 1:07:46and he's going Mr. Sermon he. Bring me a tree.
- 1:07:50So thinking about you going, oh, I can't do this.
- 1:07:52So yeah it's it's, you know he, Mark Gates has noticed his
- 1:07:57horror as well as he knows he's Doctor Who.
- 1:07:59So you know he he knows what he's, you know, he's trying to
- 1:08:06convey him what he does. So do you remember when we
- 1:08:09started this episode and I thanked you for your support of
- 1:08:12Hanser Blump in life? Well, now I'm going to end this
- 1:08:15episode by saying thank you. Because actually, you have
- 1:08:18forced me to reevaluate an episode that I had entirely
- 1:08:21written off. It's not.
- 1:08:25You know I don't want this to become my dominators.
- 1:08:28It'll be hard with you forever. I.
- 1:08:35Will. Yeah.
- 1:08:37No. But I just think it's not.
- 1:08:39I think you know. It's one that needs a bit more
- 1:08:42appreciation. I can understand why people you
- 1:08:45know, you know, not everybody likes everything, which is good.
- 1:08:49But I think there's a lot more to it than it's just been sort
- 1:08:53of like oh, that's it's it's too different.
- 1:08:56We don't like different. So there's a lot as you can see
- 1:09:00what what we've done today, I think there's if you look into
- 1:09:02it, there's a lot more to sort of take away from it and think
- 1:09:06about which is what. I think, you know, we will like
- 1:09:10also to throw away TV and everything, so sometimes it's
- 1:09:13good to sort of think about stuff.
- 1:09:14So I do wonder if context is key, because I think if you
- 1:09:18watch it in the run with this season, there's so many big
- 1:09:22things happening in this season. All those Daleks, Davros,
- 1:09:26Zygones, invasions, You know it's.
- 1:09:29Really just stand alone one because basically.
- 1:09:33Goes, as you said, goes into the next two records, But this one
- 1:09:36is very much the standalone in the series because there are
- 1:09:40others, all two, all two parters on the others, yeah, pretty
- 1:09:44much, yeah. Two or three, yeah.
- 1:09:46Two or three parters, and this is the one that doesn't fit into
- 1:09:51anything. So that's another one of the
- 1:09:54reasons it just seems to be like a placeholder, really.
- 1:09:59It's doing that weird sort of weird dichotomy of both being
- 1:10:04traditional and experimental, and that maybe that's a bit
- 1:10:08confusing for some people as well.
- 1:10:10Sometimes that doesn't work, you know?
- 1:10:11But I think this works pretty good.
- 1:10:14Yeah. Well, OK, you've now popped your
- 1:10:18hands to Cherry. Well done.
- 1:10:21And you've done a one part new series where most people start.
- 1:10:26Would you care to tell people where we're going next?
- 1:10:32Are we coming to the seaside? Oh, I do like to be beside the
- 1:10:37seaside and sea giant turtle monsters.
- 1:10:41In string vests. In strings vests.
- 1:10:44And the Navy equivalent of unit and Roger Delgado's master.
- 1:10:49Lots of seamen, plenty of seamen.
- 1:10:54Katey Manning was in our element.
- 1:10:57Katey Manning in Hovercraft coming soon.
- 1:11:00Man, yes, we are going to crack 6 episodes of the Sea Devils.
- 1:11:07Very exciting. We're going back to Pertwee
- 1:11:10Baby, yes. And so we'll truly get a chance
- 1:11:13to explore your love of that Doctor and that era.
- 1:11:17Oh, yes, we will. Thank you, Joy, but until then,
- 1:11:20no thank you. Let me say thank you for your
- 1:11:23time and until next time until. Next time, yes.
