- 0:00Speaker 1: Brought to you by the reinvented two thousand twelve Camray.
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's ready. Are you welcome to Stuff You Should Know
- 0:08Speaker 1: from House Stuff Works dot Com? Hey, and welcome to
- 0:16Speaker 1: the podcast. I'm Josh Clark. With me is Charles W.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Chuck Bryant were a couple of writers for how Stuff
- 0:22Speaker 1: Works dot Com. When we sit down in front of
- 0:24Speaker 1: these mics, though, to become stuff you should know, we
- 0:28Speaker 1: tear open our shirts and there's a big s y
- 0:30Speaker 1: s k on our chest tattooed. That's exactly right, Chuck, Chuck. Yes,
- 0:36Speaker 1: you ever jumped off a cliff? I have indeed, Yeah, yeah,
- 0:40Speaker 1: the Rock Quarry and Sparta. Do you ever go there? No,
- 0:43Speaker 1: I've jumped off of that one that was that was
- 0:45Speaker 1: pretty high. There's a rock Cory and Toledo that I
- 0:47Speaker 1: never went to. Actually it was in uh White House, Whitehall,
- 0:51Speaker 1: Bowling Green somewhere around there. I never went. My dad
- 0:53Speaker 1: was certified as a scoopa diver there though. Yeah. They
- 0:56Speaker 1: put something in a bus that was sunken at the
- 0:58Speaker 1: bottom of it. He had to go get it out
- 1:00Speaker 1: to prove that he could in fact scuba dive. Yeah,
- 1:03Speaker 1: it sounds creepy. Done that. Yeah, I myself have never
- 1:06Speaker 1: jumped off a cliff. I love it. Is it thrilling? Yeah,
- 1:10Speaker 1: it's fun. How high was it? I think I'm probably
- 1:13Speaker 1: overstating it, like everyone probably does when they do the
- 1:16Speaker 1: skinny thing, but it seemed like it was probably about
- 1:19Speaker 1: forty or fifty ft. Wow, it was high. Yeah, that
- 1:22Speaker 1: is high. And actually there's a place at the Chattahoochie that. Uh.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I used to do it too, but that was like, well, Chuck,
- 1:29Speaker 1: you have a hair your chest than I do, because
- 1:31Speaker 1: I've never jumped off a cliff, but I have been
- 1:34Speaker 1: to Acapoco before you got me there? Have you? Did
- 1:38Speaker 1: you read about these guys? Oh yeah, the the La
- 1:41Speaker 1: Cabrata diverse. I think it's nice that you bring that
- 1:45Speaker 1: extra acts. You don't have to bring an accent. And anyway,
- 1:48Speaker 1: that French dude email is this weekend. He said he
- 1:50Speaker 1: appreciated it. Yeah, He's like, I'm totally wrong, but he
- 1:55Speaker 1: thought it was funny. Yeah, so yeah, Brata, Yeah, it's
- 1:59Speaker 1: a it's pretty cool. These guys are jumping off of
- 2:01Speaker 1: the highest cliffs that anybody routinely jumps off of the world.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I did, Oh, I didn't know you actually witnessed the performance. Yeah,
- 2:09Speaker 1: I mean, you can't go to Acapoco and not see it.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I believe it's daily, um, except maybe Sundays, but I
- 2:14Speaker 1: could just be making that up. But the guys, Um,
- 2:17Speaker 1: they jump off something like I think a hundred and
- 2:20Speaker 1: forty eight foot cliffs. That's crazy. Yeah, which what is
- 2:23Speaker 1: that meters? Chuck, Josh, that would be about forty five Okay, nice,
- 2:28Speaker 1: thanks for that. You're just a walking calculator. You know
- 2:32Speaker 1: it's written right in front of me. Um. But this
- 2:35Speaker 1: is an enormous cliff. This is what a fourteen story
- 2:38Speaker 1: building isn't a story like ten feet? Yeah, so they're
- 2:41Speaker 1: jumping off of fourteen story buildings into waters. It's like
- 2:43Speaker 1: a little inlet and they're on one side and then
- 2:47Speaker 1: you're on the other with railing so you don't try
- 2:50Speaker 1: jumping off. And these guys just start jumping. There's like
- 2:53Speaker 1: ten fifteen of them. Wow, they do it every night.
- 2:56Speaker 1: And actually it was started by a thirteen old boy
- 3:01Speaker 1: back in Yeah, that's what I hear. And I will
- 3:04Speaker 1: pronounce his name as Enrique et Pakrios, very very nice. Um.
- 3:10Speaker 1: So this little boy started this tourist attraction, and what
- 3:15Speaker 1: has arguably become a one of the cooler extreme sports
- 3:19Speaker 1: as well. But the story goes back further than that, correct. Yeah,
- 3:22Speaker 1: But I just want to point out we're on the
- 3:24Speaker 1: fifte floor, so this is ballpark. Within about ten or
- 3:28Speaker 1: fifty out the window were wow, Yeah, that's high. Jerry's giggling.
- 3:43Speaker 1: She's either gonna cut that out or leave it in.
- 3:45Speaker 1: We'll find out, right, that is very high. That is
- 3:47Speaker 1: real high. Yeah. I mean we would have jumped onto
- 3:50Speaker 1: the street have we just jumped out? Plus it would
- 3:52Speaker 1: have been an extra ten ft. This is water, but
- 3:54Speaker 1: I'm telling you there's like bowlders at the bottom, there's
- 3:57Speaker 1: waves breaking. It's an inlet at the ocean, and that's
- 4:00Speaker 1: part of the trick is to time it with the
- 4:03Speaker 1: water coming in and out, and then obviously mind the
- 4:07Speaker 1: boulders and because you know, you clearly don't want to
- 4:10Speaker 1: like jump into a boulder. But what I also noticed
- 4:13Speaker 1: in this article that if you hit like a fish,
- 4:16Speaker 1: that could be bad news. Right yeah. Uh. And we'll
- 4:19Speaker 1: get into the physics of cliff diving soon. But like
- 4:22Speaker 1: I said, where where do we find the beginning? This
- 4:24Speaker 1: is one of those rare um pieces of um world culture.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Because everybody does it everywhere. Anywhere there's cliffs, there's cliff
- 4:33Speaker 1: divers pretty much. But this is one of those rare
- 4:36Speaker 1: pieces that you can go back and be like, this
- 4:38Speaker 1: guy actually started it. I don't think this is the
- 4:40Speaker 1: first guy. I would say, he's probably the first guy
- 4:42Speaker 1: in recorded history. Do you want to take his name? Yes,
- 4:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with the King kahikil of Hawaii. He
- 4:51Speaker 1: was the last king of Maui and in seventeen seventy
- 4:55Speaker 1: he reportedly jumped from cannot seats where I get in
- 5:00Speaker 1: trouble Calnolulu. I think it's pretty much how I would
- 5:07Speaker 1: in my in my head, I can pronounce it better
- 5:10Speaker 1: than that. But once it goes through the tongue, you
- 5:12Speaker 1: know what happens. That was about sixty three ft and
- 5:15Speaker 1: he uh entered the water, didn't make much of a splash.
- 5:18Speaker 1: So he earned the name Birdman and then apparently would
- 5:21Speaker 1: challenge his warriors to prove their bravery by doing the same. Right.
- 5:26Speaker 1: So that's where it started, at least that's what the
- 5:28Speaker 1: lower says. And I can imagine, you know, his people
- 5:31Speaker 1: calling him Birdman and him going, um no, it's uh
- 5:35Speaker 1: Kiley king Kay Kiley actually to you. Yeah, um, but yeah,
- 5:41Speaker 1: Actually every night at the Ratan Maui they reenact this thing.
- 5:46Speaker 1: They have some guy go up to the top of
- 5:48Speaker 1: a cliff and it's very cliff. He jumped off of
- 5:51Speaker 1: right in a loincloth and jump into the water. And
- 5:54Speaker 1: the reason he jumped into the water was because this
- 5:57Speaker 1: is where the uh the Maui's yeah right, Malian's sure. Uh.
- 6:03Speaker 1: They where they believed that souls transferred into the next
- 6:07Speaker 1: world through, yeah, the spirit world. And I guess he
- 6:10Speaker 1: was like, let's see what the hell happens, right, So
- 6:12Speaker 1: now they re enacted with the loincloth to dude, he
- 6:15Speaker 1: offers up in each direction to the sky, uh and
- 6:18Speaker 1: offering he has the lay and then a torch and
- 6:22Speaker 1: then he'll jump in right and uh when he jumped
- 6:25Speaker 1: in absolutely no one outside of the Greater Maui area
- 6:29Speaker 1: had a clue. But many years later, the cliff diving
- 6:34Speaker 1: concept really started to take off thanks to time X
- 6:39Speaker 1: and ABC Correct So time X. Back in the late fifties,
- 6:43Speaker 1: time makes used to like to um show off the
- 6:46Speaker 1: impact resistance that their watches could boast. Yeah, I remember
- 6:50Speaker 1: the and I was about to say, I remember this
- 6:51Speaker 1: one when I was remember when it first broadcast, so
- 6:55Speaker 1: clearly I didn't. But they ran this campaign through the
- 6:58Speaker 1: seventies because I remember the takes a look and keeps
- 7:00Speaker 1: on ticking things. That's right, Yeah, that's what that That
- 7:03Speaker 1: was the tagline. Right. So this commercial though they jumped in,
- 7:07Speaker 1: uh John Cameron Swayze what I don't think any relation
- 7:10Speaker 1: to Patrick. I was wondering the same thing. Actually, I
- 7:14Speaker 1: have to look that up. Uh he uh hosted this
- 7:18Speaker 1: commercial and they give a torture test. Right, No, he
- 7:21Speaker 1: didn't actually jump in, now, he was just like check
- 7:23Speaker 1: this guy out. And they had some cliff diver jump
- 7:27Speaker 1: in fist first with the time X like exposed, so
- 7:30Speaker 1: it was the first thing that hit the water, and
- 7:33Speaker 1: I imagined that after a few takes he eventually didn't
- 7:36Speaker 1: break the watch and they were like, look what happened.
- 7:39Speaker 1: So that was the late fifties and then really cliff
- 7:43Speaker 1: diving took off, if you'll excuse me, uh in I
- 7:47Speaker 1: think March nine. Yes, it took the leap in so bad.
- 7:54Speaker 1: With the A b C's Wide World of Sports, which
- 7:57Speaker 1: was a great concept. Man all over the place, they
- 8:01Speaker 1: show the craziest stuff. This is long before anybody ever
- 8:03Speaker 1: thought of the X Games or anything like that. Like
- 8:05Speaker 1: they just were like, these people are engaged in some
- 8:08Speaker 1: random sport and we're gonna broadcast it. By god, I
- 8:11Speaker 1: love that show. The thrill of victory in the agony
- 8:14Speaker 1: of defeat in Lumberjacks. The guy that the skier that
- 8:17Speaker 1: had that awful accident was always the agony of defeat.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I don't remember that guy? Was it in the intro? Yeah?
- 8:22Speaker 1: And then when they said that it showed this skier
- 8:24Speaker 1: had this just awful crash and flipping over and like
- 8:28Speaker 1: breaking everyone in his body. Did he die? No? I
- 8:30Speaker 1: don't think so he lived. He walked away, okay, is
- 8:34Speaker 1: what I say. Um. And then here we are today, actually, Chuck,
- 8:39Speaker 1: I think about four weeks away from the two thousand
- 8:44Speaker 1: ten Red Bull cliff Diving World Championships. Yeah, the World Series.
- 8:47Speaker 1: By the time this is published, it will probably be
- 8:49Speaker 1: within a couple of days, but it's May fifteen. If
- 8:52Speaker 1: you're interested, uh in going to France to watch it?
- 8:56Speaker 1: They jump off platform. So but it's at a cliff still, right.
- 9:00Speaker 1: But on the site, I was checking out some Frenchmen
- 9:03Speaker 1: who were cliff diving, um, and they went to this
- 9:07Speaker 1: old early nineteenth century. For that Napoleon had built off
- 9:11Speaker 1: the coast of France in the Atlantic. Cool. Um, and
- 9:14Speaker 1: it's I think twenty high, which places it around sixty
- 9:17Speaker 1: ft uh huh meters. First, well, it's in France. I
- 9:23Speaker 1: just thought i'd give like a little head nod, you know,
- 9:25Speaker 1: like France. Y um. And these guys were just jumping
- 9:28Speaker 1: off this old stone fortress in the middle of the Atlantic.
- 9:30Speaker 1: It's pretty cool. Well, I don't want to say the
- 9:32Speaker 1: middle of the Atlantic. It's actually right off the coast,
- 9:34Speaker 1: but it's surrounded by water. Yeah, you know, I saw
- 9:38Speaker 1: that picture. I didn't know what's going on there. That's
- 9:41Speaker 1: what was going on. Okay, mystery solved. Is it physics time?
- 9:46Speaker 1: This is this is your bag? Actually I understood. It's
- 9:49Speaker 1: really not that complicated. No, it's gravity, it's free fall.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Physics is what we're talking about. Sure, Chuck. When you
- 9:56Speaker 1: walked in here to sit down and contribute your fine
- 10:00Speaker 1: and half of this podcast, Um, you were being pulled
- 10:03Speaker 1: towards the Earth by gravity, but you were also meeting
- 10:06Speaker 1: resistance from the ground, which caused friction. Had you actually
- 10:11Speaker 1: walked off a cliff on the way in here, you
- 10:14Speaker 1: would have still been pulled by gravity, but there wouldn't
- 10:17Speaker 1: be any resistance from the from the force of friction, right,
- 10:20Speaker 1: which makes it free fall, which does make a free fall,
- 10:22Speaker 1: which Galileo was the first to figure this out of
- 10:25Speaker 1: free fall physics. Um, when you are pulled towards the
- 10:28Speaker 1: Earth by gravity, you're actually pulled at nine point eight
- 10:32Speaker 1: meters per second per second. And the reason that extra
- 10:36Speaker 1: per second is there is because for every second that
- 10:39Speaker 1: you're in the air falling at that rate, you're increasing
- 10:43Speaker 1: in speed. So you go nine point eight meters per
- 10:47Speaker 1: second per second to what um nineteen point six meters
- 10:52Speaker 1: per second per second, and so on. So every second
- 10:55Speaker 1: you double your speed, your your your velocity. The la
- 11:00Speaker 1: city is constant, but the speed can increase given time,
- 11:03Speaker 1: But the acceleration is constant, right, That's what it is. Yeah,
- 11:06Speaker 1: I'm sorry, the acceleration is constant, but your speed your
- 11:09Speaker 1: velocity can actually increase, right given time. Now, in the
- 11:12Speaker 1: case of cliff diving, height, the height of the cliff
- 11:16Speaker 1: is pretty much interchangeable with time. The higher the cliff,
- 11:20Speaker 1: the more time you're going to be in the air,
- 11:21Speaker 1: and the faster you go. Right, So when you jump
- 11:24Speaker 1: off I think a ten foot cliff. How fast are
- 11:27Speaker 1: you traveling? That's not much of a cliff, I call
- 11:29Speaker 1: it a rock? Yeah, pretty much about seventeen right. But
- 11:34Speaker 1: if you jump off a fifty foot cliff like you
- 11:36Speaker 1: were jumping off of in the quarries, well we'll say
- 11:38Speaker 1: fifty from now on, Um, that goes up to what
- 11:45Speaker 1: right now? The problem is when you hit the water,
- 11:48Speaker 1: you encounter that force of friction again, and your velocity
- 11:52Speaker 1: goes from its maximum speed to almost zero, almost instantaneous.
- 11:56Speaker 1: It's like a second right. Right now, we've encountered why
- 12:00Speaker 1: cliff diving is dangerous because eventually you're going to land
- 12:04Speaker 1: on something. Yeah, and you know, before we move on
- 12:06Speaker 1: from physics, I just thought it was interesting that when
- 12:09Speaker 1: you do jump out, or if you get a running start,
- 12:12Speaker 1: you're gonna go even faster than if you just drop.
- 12:14Speaker 1: You've added, um, horizontal velocity or horizontal force. I am
- 12:19Speaker 1: definitely not a physics guy, but you had it right. Velocity,
- 12:23Speaker 1: thanks buddy. One of the cool aspects of free fall
- 12:27Speaker 1: physics as far as it relates to humans. Also, Chuck,
- 12:31Speaker 1: get this. Do you remember learning like a long time
- 12:34Speaker 1: ago that no matter what the mass of an object,
- 12:36Speaker 1: it'll fall at the same rate. Galileo again, right, that
- 12:40Speaker 1: is Galileo. Yeah, and he actually disproved Aristotle with that one.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Some say they're both geniuses. They both are. Um did
- 12:47Speaker 1: we mention them in the Genius podcast that on that
- 12:49Speaker 1: list of fifty that ended in George Washington? Right? Um,
- 12:55Speaker 1: you might say that I've dropped a piece of paper
- 12:58Speaker 1: and a hammer the same time, and the piece of
- 13:01Speaker 1: paper took longer. That's because it meant resistance from the air.
- 13:04Speaker 1: And actually, um, Commander David Scott of the Apollo fifteen
- 13:08Speaker 1: mission famously took a hammer and I think a feather
- 13:12Speaker 1: on the Moon and dropped it and they both landed
- 13:14Speaker 1: at the same time. Yeah, there's video of it on YouTube.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Actually awesome, But I'm almost done with my physics spiel, okay,
- 13:23Speaker 1: And it ends as such, when you jump off a cliff,
- 13:27Speaker 1: and remember, you're not meeting friction any longer, and so
- 13:29Speaker 1: there's no resistance besides this negligible air resistance. Um, you
- 13:33Speaker 1: actually do encounter what we would consider on Earth as
- 13:36Speaker 1: close to weightlesses as we can get. Right, So your
- 13:40Speaker 1: your body is being pulled as a whole by gravity
- 13:44Speaker 1: equally all parts except for your internal organs, right, which
- 13:48Speaker 1: actually lose weightless lose weight and rise up in your chest,
- 13:53Speaker 1: which is why your stomach feels like it's coming out.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Actually is Isn't that cool? I've always wondered what that was.
- 13:59Speaker 1: That's what it is. Goodness me. Alright, we're done at
- 14:02Speaker 1: the physics part. Yeah, well two to three g s
- 14:04Speaker 1: we should say, Like at the World Championships they hit
- 14:07Speaker 1: about two to three gs and those dudes are going
- 14:10Speaker 1: at speeds up to sixty. That's fast. That's really fast
- 14:14Speaker 1: to be hitting the water. And you want to since
- 14:17Speaker 1: we're at the water entry point, which I think where
- 14:19Speaker 1: we left off with the physics, you want to go
- 14:22Speaker 1: and really really really straight. That's the key because if
- 14:26Speaker 1: you flatten out, it is the room. You know, you
- 14:29Speaker 1: hear the legend about it's like hitting concrete. It is
- 14:31Speaker 1: like hitting concrete and you would die, yes, you would,
- 14:35Speaker 1: or you know, not be the same person afterwards. The
- 14:38Speaker 1: very least. There's actually there's a website by a woman,
- 14:42Speaker 1: a Quebecan named Patricia I think her name is, who's
- 14:46Speaker 1: created this website dedicated to warning people about a famous
- 14:50Speaker 1: tourist Cliff diving site called Ricks Cafe and the Grille Jamaica.
- 14:54Speaker 1: That's only though, it is. But this woman jumped off
- 14:57Speaker 1: this thirty five ft platform and he bet she belly flopped.
- 15:02Speaker 1: She couldn't have gone in feet first, because this is
- 15:04Speaker 1: what happened to her is she suffered a broken spine,
- 15:09Speaker 1: broken sternum, displaced diaphragm, which is never good and uh
- 15:14Speaker 1: did she look at her purse? And terrible and uh
- 15:19Speaker 1: posterior vitreous detachment which means the jelly in her eyes loose. Now,
- 15:23Speaker 1: oh man, thirty thirty ft jump. Well, the deal there though,
- 15:27Speaker 1: at the cafe is they have it set up with
- 15:29Speaker 1: the platform, right they. I mean you have to sign
- 15:31Speaker 1: a waiver or anything. I don't know. I think if
- 15:35Speaker 1: if you were a smart owner of Rick's Cafe and
- 15:39Speaker 1: you were encouraging tourists and jump off the platform, yeah,
- 15:41Speaker 1: you would have them signed her way their firstborn child. Yeah. Yeah,
- 15:45Speaker 1: Well they do say in here though the official tours
- 15:47Speaker 1: tourism boards don't encourage this because it's dangerous. It's really dangerous. Yeah,
- 15:53Speaker 1: and we should also probably take the time to c
- 15:55Speaker 1: o A and tell you that we don't encourage you
- 15:57Speaker 1: to click dive either. No, I mean a tin foot
- 16:02Speaker 1: rock is one thing. But even then, if you land
- 16:04Speaker 1: on another rock, there's a lot of people like you said, fish, Yeah,
- 16:08Speaker 1: fish traveling sixty miles an hour and you hit a fish,
- 16:11Speaker 1: it's not as um let's say liquid as a water, right,
- 16:18Speaker 1: although it will be after you hit it at sixty miles,
- 16:22Speaker 1: So chuck. In addition to Ricks Cafe and the Grill,
- 16:25Speaker 1: what are some of the other um well known cliff
- 16:28Speaker 1: diving locations hot spots? Josh, that's one way to put it. Well,
- 16:33Speaker 1: I know Jamaica, the West End cliffs and the Grille.
- 16:37Speaker 1: That's where Ricks is. Oh is it that they have
- 16:39Speaker 1: the Limestone cliffs? Those are really popular? Sure? Pretty I imagine.
- 16:43Speaker 1: So there's two phrases or terms that the Hawaiians used
- 16:46Speaker 1: depending on whether you make a splash or not with
- 16:48Speaker 1: a big jump. So leally kawa that sounds right. Thanks.
- 16:53Speaker 1: That's a that's to leap from a great height and
- 16:56Speaker 1: enter the water without a splash, which we should say
- 16:59Speaker 1: is what King Kahikili did. Yeah, I think that's right.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Is that the name of the idol that the Brady
- 17:08Speaker 1: kids found in the episode where they went to Hawaii
- 17:10Speaker 1: the two parter I don't know those are great episodes,
- 17:14Speaker 1: though they really were. Debbie would know that, my friend
- 17:16Speaker 1: Debbie would know. Well, tell her to write in okay
- 17:19Speaker 1: okay um the other way. The other expression is lately pahu.
- 17:24Speaker 1: That sounds right too, thanks. Man. That's entering the water
- 17:26Speaker 1: with a big splash from a great jump, and that's
- 17:29Speaker 1: that's a bad thing, right, Yeah, some people just do
- 17:33Speaker 1: a cannon ball. Yeah, well say say so long to
- 17:35Speaker 1: your shins. Yeah, exactly. So we got Hawaii Acapulco again.
- 17:40Speaker 1: The La cabrata Um divers. Seriously, they're jumping off of
- 17:45Speaker 1: a hundred and forty seven foot cliffs right. The next
- 17:49Speaker 1: highest that I've seen, well, actually that i've seen in
- 17:53Speaker 1: this article is in Croatia and Dubrovnik, and those are
- 17:57Speaker 1: fet and that's about the height that they do. The
- 18:00Speaker 1: competition dives. They don't do competition dives from feet because
- 18:04Speaker 1: they're doing flips and twitter. Actually I've got some stuff
- 18:06Speaker 1: on that. But they're not just diving in. They going
- 18:09Speaker 1: feet first generally. Oh really, well, for the competition, I
- 18:13Speaker 1: haven't seen many of many of those guys going head first. Dude.
- 18:17Speaker 1: The guys in Acapulco flips in mid air and dive
- 18:21Speaker 1: in like it's not just jumping off of a cliff
- 18:23Speaker 1: like these, and they'll do it like several at a time. Well, yeah,
- 18:27Speaker 1: I did see on YouTube, but want a tandem dive
- 18:30Speaker 1: or whatever? This is multiple um. Also, if you ever
- 18:34Speaker 1: get a chance to go to Acapulco, I wouldn't recommend
- 18:37Speaker 1: going now, what with the raging drug war in Mexico.
- 18:41Speaker 1: But if that ever dies down and you do get
- 18:44Speaker 1: to go to Acapulco, do go see the cliff divers.
- 18:47Speaker 1: I think that's a great move. Or if you can't
- 18:50Speaker 1: go there, just go to YouTube. You can check it
- 18:53Speaker 1: out there. Check out some awfully bad video. Uh. The
- 18:56Speaker 1: World High Diving Federation, Josh, they recommend water depths of
- 19:01Speaker 1: forty nine feet for a dive of sixty ft or less,
- 19:06Speaker 1: and they also recommend that no one dive from six
- 19:11Speaker 1: are higher unless you're a pro and you have like
- 19:13Speaker 1: scuba divers down there to retrieve your lifeless body or
- 19:17Speaker 1: at least your shattered body. Exactly. Okay, Chuck, Let's say
- 19:21Speaker 1: somebody out there is going to try this, whether we
- 19:23Speaker 1: tell them to or not, and let's just do it again.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Let's just tell them not to cliff dive. Okay, don't
- 19:28Speaker 1: cliff dive, thank you. If they're going to do it anyway,
- 19:31Speaker 1: should we give them some safety tips, Yes, Josh, we
- 19:34Speaker 1: have some tips. The first one on the list slow
- 19:37Speaker 1: and low. Don't charge out there to the sixty ft
- 19:41Speaker 1: cliff right off the bat start on the tin footer,
- 19:44Speaker 1: slow and low. That is the tempo. You want to
- 19:46Speaker 1: check out, very nice. You want to check out the
- 19:48Speaker 1: water beforehand. Swim around down there at your landing zone.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Scare off any fish. You can scare off any fish.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Feel around for rocks and things, bar uncles, underwater spears,
- 20:03Speaker 1: anything like that. Right, you go with a friend who's
- 20:07Speaker 1: always a good idea. You don't want cliff side by yourself,
- 20:09Speaker 1: You're dummy. You might as well dig your own grave
- 20:11Speaker 1: and lye in and start shoveling dirt over yourself. They
- 20:15Speaker 1: recommend to wear a wetsuit because it can add a
- 20:17Speaker 1: little cushioning. But if you've ever seen cliff divers, they
- 20:20Speaker 1: generally wear the speedo I know, which makes it one
- 20:24Speaker 1: of the sexiest extreme sports around. You don't see Tony
- 20:27Speaker 1: Hawk in a speedo, do you know? Wow? I'm trying
- 20:30Speaker 1: to imagine on skateboarding with a speedo. I'm sure somebody's
- 20:34Speaker 1: done it. Probably those crazy kids that um jackass or whatever.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that one guy always wears his underwear. Uh.
- 20:41Speaker 1: We we need to talk about Orlando Duque though. He's
- 20:44Speaker 1: like the king Daddy of cliff diving. He's ill do no,
- 20:48Speaker 1: actually they call him the Duke of dive, so you're
- 20:50Speaker 1: not like he he's Colombian, but he lives in Hawaii. Now.
- 20:55Speaker 1: He's nine time world champ and his personal w kird
- 21:00Speaker 1: in competition is a hundred and eleven feet and he
- 21:03Speaker 1: holds the record for the perfect dive. He's the only
- 21:05Speaker 1: guy to ever get judged to get scored a perfect
- 21:08Speaker 1: dive across the board And um, did they factor in
- 21:13Speaker 1: how you looking a speedo into that score? Yeah? He's
- 21:15Speaker 1: a handsome man, Yeah he has Uh. He also he
- 21:19Speaker 1: was he wanted to be a high diver for Columbia,
- 21:21Speaker 1: but they didn't like an Olympic hidiver. But they wouldn't
- 21:24Speaker 1: fund him, so he was like, okay, yeah, I go
- 21:26Speaker 1: dig off cliffs performance shows. So he makes a lot
- 21:30Speaker 1: more scratch doing this, I'm sure than he would have
- 21:32Speaker 1: as an as an Olympian. I'd like to mention somebody
- 21:36Speaker 1: who's that. His name is de Juan Ron. He's Chinese.
- 21:40Speaker 1: If you couldn't get he's fifty one and he actually
- 21:43Speaker 1: holds the world record that he's set in two thousand
- 21:45Speaker 1: and eight for um cliff diving off of waterfalls. Wow.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I want you to think about this for a second.
- 21:52Speaker 1: In most cases with waterfalls, there are rocks at the
- 21:56Speaker 1: bottom and there's a little something that we like to
- 21:58Speaker 1: call a vortex. Yes, this is a swirling funnel of
- 22:04Speaker 1: water underwater that sucks you in and hold you there.
- 22:08Speaker 1: This guy aims for the center. Does that make sense?
- 22:14Speaker 1: Apparently because he's survived it would soften the fall though
- 22:17Speaker 1: probably right. I have no idea why he jumps into
- 22:20Speaker 1: the center. He just does. Wow. Ye how high? Uh?
- 22:23Speaker 1: The twelve point nineteen meters? So what's that? It's like,
- 22:30Speaker 1: it's not It isn't. But he's jumping into a vortex
- 22:32Speaker 1: for God's sake, right, and he's one. Yeah. The there's
- 22:36Speaker 1: high divers too, that's a different deal. Like the show people,
- 22:40Speaker 1: the high diving show people. That's not a cliff thing situation, obviously,
- 22:44Speaker 1: but they think the world record is do name Oliver
- 22:48Speaker 1: Farve hundred and seventy eight feet and into they jump
- 22:53Speaker 1: into those pools like a little little cup riding an
- 22:57Speaker 1: elephant cartoon. Um and the previous guy, I can't remember
- 23:01Speaker 1: what his name was, but I saw it on YouTube.
- 23:03Speaker 1: It was in the seventies and I remember watching this
- 23:05Speaker 1: when I was a kid, and it might have been
- 23:07Speaker 1: on Wide World of Sports, but it showed oh Dana
- 23:09Speaker 1: something and he had the Camra review of his little
- 23:13Speaker 1: platform up there and it was crazy, man, I mean
- 23:16Speaker 1: I got like butterflies watching it in my cubicle Wenna.
- 23:22Speaker 1: I guess wait, there was one more thing I wanted
- 23:23Speaker 1: to say. Competition the Red Bull deal. You get three
- 23:27Speaker 1: heats per competition and you're judged on drop, position in
- 23:32Speaker 1: the air and dive which means you know your flips.
- 23:38Speaker 1: There's three things you can get scored on number of twists, summersaults,
- 23:42Speaker 1: and position during the summersaults, and then entry into the water.
- 23:45Speaker 1: So sort of like regular Olympic diving the way that scored,
- 23:48Speaker 1: but just much higher. And they call him heats because
- 23:50Speaker 1: of the speedos. I think you might be right. If
- 23:53Speaker 1: you want to learn more about cliff diving, just type

- 24:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna call this hanky email alright, saw, this is nice.
- 24:55Speaker 1: I like it when people weird dreams about us. Hello,
- 24:59Speaker 1: Josh and Chuck and Jerry. Yesterday I was going to
- 25:02Speaker 1: email you to tell you that due to listening to
- 25:04Speaker 1: your podcast on my daily commute, I've begun to describe
- 25:07Speaker 1: things as hinky instead of dodgy. She's from the UK,
- 25:12Speaker 1: which is the word I would usually use. This means
- 25:14Speaker 1: that whenever I use it, I have to explain what
- 25:16Speaker 1: it means. It's not a widely word used in the UK,
- 25:19Speaker 1: as it seems hinky' is not. Uh. This ends up
- 25:24Speaker 1: in me recommending your podcast to a lot of people,
- 25:26Speaker 1: so she's actually spreading the word thanks to the hinky thing.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Then I thought it's not that exciting of a story,
- 25:31Speaker 1: so I decided not to send the email. But last
- 25:35Speaker 1: night I dreamt I had a dream about you, guys.
- 25:37Speaker 1: I dreamt I bumped into Josh at a beach bar,
- 25:40Speaker 1: which she says she's never been to a beach bar
- 25:42Speaker 1: and she has no idea where it was. I told
- 25:45Speaker 1: him the hinky story, and then behind him he pointed
- 25:47Speaker 1: to a big sign that said hanky. Then he told
- 25:51Speaker 1: me a lot of things Chuck does rubs off on people,
- 25:55Speaker 1: and he proceeded to show me a bare snarl complete
- 25:58Speaker 1: with swiping paul action. So I took this as a
- 26:03Speaker 1: sign that I should probably send the email. I just
- 26:05Speaker 1: think that's hysterical that was clearly a sign. Yeah, I
- 26:08Speaker 1: want to see you can do the parsnel with the
- 26:10Speaker 1: swiping pol Wow, that's nice. The dream was by far
- 26:14Speaker 1: the most normal dream I had last night. By the way,
- 26:16Speaker 1: I also dreamt I got married by postal marriage. I
- 26:20Speaker 1: didn't know what's such a thing. Well, yeah, mail order bride.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Now is that what she means? Anyway? I hope that
- 26:26Speaker 1: you take some pride in the fact that you were
- 26:27Speaker 1: spreading the word hinky around the world from Rachel X. Okay,
- 26:31Speaker 1: thanks for that, Rachel. All right, Chuck, that was a
- 26:33Speaker 1: good one. It was. We always like it when we're
- 26:35Speaker 1: factored into dreams, right, that's just cool. It is especially
- 26:39Speaker 1: I mean, consider that we have um people who we've
- 26:42Speaker 1: never met dreaming about us. I dream about people I've
- 26:45Speaker 1: never met. I guess that my celebrity dreams all the time.
- 26:48Speaker 1: I've told you about those. Yes, I'm like hanging out
- 26:51Speaker 1: like buddies with people I love. If you ever had
- 26:55Speaker 1: a dream about Chuck paling around with the celebrities never met,
- 26:59Speaker 1: we want to hear about it, even if you make
- 27:01Speaker 1: it up. Put in an email and send it to
