- 0:00Hi, everyone. This is Elizabeth Caslow with the
- 0:02Becker's Payer Issues podcast.
- 0:04I'm thrilled today to be joined by Steve
- 0:06Jurkovich,
- 0:07chief executive officer at OptumInsight
- 0:09Payer Market.
- 0:11Steve, thank you so much for joining us
- 0:12today.
- 0:14Thanks for having me.
- 0:15Yeah. So can you just give us a
- 0:17little bit more on your role,
- 0:19and Optum Insights in the payer market, part
- 0:22specifically?
- 0:24Yeah. I sure can. As you said, I
- 0:26currently serve as the CEO of Optum Insights
- 0:29payer business.
- 0:31And in that business, really, the the crux
- 0:34of what we do is partnering with health
- 0:36plans to help them navigate the complex health
- 0:39care delivery system.
- 0:41And we're able to connect payers, providers, and
- 0:43members
- 0:44through data and technology with
- 0:47our mission to make the health system work
- 0:49better for everyone.
- 0:51I've been with OptumInsight for the past sixteen
- 0:53years and in health care for about thirty
- 0:56four.
- 0:58So it looks like you're gonna have a
- 0:59lot of great color to add to our
- 1:01conversation with that experience under your belt. So
- 1:04from your perspective, how would you describe the
- 1:06current health care landscape?
- 1:08And what is the most pressing challenge that
- 1:10payers are dealing with right now?
- 1:13Oh, that's a this is a big question.
- 1:15And I would say costs are the things
- 1:18that are really top of mind right now.
- 1:20Health care costs continue to rise at an
- 1:23alarming rate with
- 1:24U A US health care spending reaching about
- 1:274,900,000,000,000
- 1:29and growing at about a seven seven and
- 1:31a half percent,
- 1:32rate year over year.
- 1:34Utilization
- 1:35continues to increase,
- 1:37post pandemic, and
- 1:39payers are trying to balance afford affordability
- 1:42with
- 1:43patient experience
- 1:45and regulatory pressures,
- 1:47all while we as consumers of health care
- 1:50are demanding a better and more transparent experience.
- 1:54In fact, I recently talked with a payer
- 1:56CEO
- 1:57who is struggling to balance the reality of
- 1:59the increasing medical cost trends
- 2:02with the need to decrease their operating expense,
- 2:05which, as you might imagine, learned to a
- 2:07great,
- 2:08turned to a great conversation about artificial intelligence
- 2:12and how to use AI, but not just
- 2:14as a cost lever, really as a growth
- 2:16and a cost lever creating a win win,
- 2:19across the market.
- 2:22So I look forward to diving into that
- 2:23a little bit more deeply. How is Optum
- 2:26working on those cost challenges,
- 2:28And where are you seeing real progress? Like,
- 2:29what is working with AI on that front?
- 2:33Yeah. I I would say, first, from an
- 2:35affordability
- 2:36perspective,
- 2:37the industry has finally moved away from pay
- 2:40and chase or post payment recovery,
- 2:43and shifted
- 2:44to more,
- 2:46modernized thinking
- 2:47around prepayment
- 2:49and accuracy.
- 2:50But our work isn't done. It's a nice
- 2:52step forward. But to really make a difference,
- 2:55to really make an impact,
- 2:57we now need to shift to real time
- 2:59interactions,
- 3:00eliminating
- 3:01down,
- 3:02downstream disputes
- 3:04and reducing the administrative
- 3:06administrative
- 3:07friction that exists today.
- 3:10We're seeing our payer partners move from batch
- 3:12processes to real time interactions,
- 3:16and,
- 3:17that's reducing costs across the board.
- 3:20It also results in fewer downstream disputes, less,
- 3:26better relationships between payer and provider. And let's
- 3:28face it,
- 3:30all of those interactions
- 3:32have an impact on the member and the
- 3:34patient.
- 3:35And sometimes it's it's,
- 3:37not easy to remember that, but
- 3:39I think we, as the leadership
- 3:42across
- 3:43health plans, health systems,
- 3:45we need to remember that at the other
- 3:47end of that transaction, there's a member or
- 3:49a patient that's,
- 3:51receiving care. And all of the noise in
- 3:53the process today,
- 3:55could be very distracting for them, and,
- 3:59and it's our job to fix that.
- 4:02The other thing that I see is is
- 4:04payers are moving away from, you know, the
- 4:07days where they have 15 or 20 different
- 4:10affordability or payment integrity partners,
- 4:14shifting to three to five
- 4:16real partners that integrate solutions
- 4:19as opposed to the patchwork framework that we've
- 4:21seen in previous years.
- 4:23And one of the things that's helping to
- 4:25do that is certainly the adoption of AI.
- 4:30So you mentioned the member and patient side
- 4:32of things. How are digital capabilities
- 4:35helping improve the member experience and affordability,
- 4:39for those people?
- 4:42It's a it's a great question. And we
- 4:44talked about shifting from postpaid to prepay
- 4:47and now going from prepay to true avoidance
- 4:50is great for the system.
- 4:54It really is gonna have a meaningful,
- 4:56impact
- 4:57on payers and providers, but also that member.
- 5:01It will it will take them out of
- 5:03the middle. One example is a a health
- 5:06system that we're working with
- 5:08processed over 5,000 visits. And
- 5:11in those five five thousand visits using real
- 5:14time connections to a payer,
- 5:17they reduced the number of errors that occurred.
- 5:20They,
- 5:22received faster reimbursement with fewer disputes,
- 5:25which is terrific, but the real win is
- 5:28that the the,
- 5:30member experience was greatly improved.
- 5:33That has to be our North Star as
- 5:35we think about how to modernize the systems
- 5:37going forward.
- 5:39And looking ahead, say, you know, in the
- 5:41next few years,
- 5:42how does payer provider collaboration
- 5:44shape and inform a more connected health care
- 5:47ecosystem?
- 5:49Yeah. That's the goal, Elizabeth. I mean,
- 5:52I think about health care as,
- 5:56an experience across multiple steps in the patient
- 5:59journey.
- 6:00Pre care, during care, post care, these can't
- 6:03be isolated, and they have to be connected.
- 6:05And if that has to be connected, we
- 6:07also have to think about connecting eligibility,
- 6:10utilization,
- 6:11medical management, authorizations,
- 6:14revenue cycle management, payment integrity,
- 6:17and others to deliver on the promise of
- 6:20a connected transparent healthcare.
- 6:23Bringing these workflows together into the patient journey,
- 6:27decreasing handoffs, driving accuracy,
- 6:29and making a connected experience for all the
- 6:32participants,
- 6:34that's where we're going.
- 6:36In fact, we've we've, recently,
- 6:40launched our OptumReal products in the marketplace that
- 6:43are are facilitating
- 6:44those
- 6:45seamless transparent
- 6:47interactions.
- 6:48And,
- 6:49as I described, the the the benefits are
- 6:52pretty terrific, and the impact to the patient
- 6:57is, is is positive.
- 7:00Well, thank you so much, Steve. And I
- 7:02would just wanna give you the opportunity while
- 7:04I have you here. Is there anything else
- 7:05on your mind that you wanted to share
- 7:07as we wrap up?
- 7:09You know, I think the the last thing
- 7:10that I would share is,
- 7:13as I said, I've been in the business.
- 7:14I've been in the health care industry for
- 7:16a long time, and I'm I'm really encouraged
- 7:19about
- 7:19the way I see payers and providers working
- 7:22together today.
- 7:24It seems to me that the days of,
- 7:26payers and providers sitting across from one another
- 7:28scowling with their arms crossed with a
- 7:31a bucket of claims
- 7:32from each organization
- 7:34that have to be, quote, unquote, reconciled are
- 7:37gone. And,
- 7:39payers and providers are now really working together
- 7:41to solve really, really difficult problems
- 7:45to make the delivery system better and to
- 7:47make it better for us as health care
- 7:49consumers. So,
- 7:50as people listen to this, if, if you
- 7:53wanna learn more, I'd love to talk. Thanks
- 7:56for the opportunity.
- 7:58Yeah. Thank you so much, Steve. It was
- 7:59great touching base.
