- 0:19effective body disposal, thumb chewing, and are shark movies
- 0:24and slashers directly related?
- 0:27Plus, did either of my co-hosts flash Jaws?
- 0:32No way, right?
- 0:35Right?
- 0:37Right?
- 0:39Stay tuned and find out.
- 0:42This is Dangerous Animals.
- 0:45This is Xenomania.
- 1:03Ryan: 300 men went into the water.
- 1:05316 men came out.
- 1:07The shark took the rest.
- 1:09June 29th, 1945.
- 1:12I just wanna know the song 'cause I wanna sing the song,
- 1:16Kearns: So
- 1:16Ryan: I can't
- 1:16Kearns: we told him he wasn't allowed to do it in a imitation of Quint's
- 1:19voice because believe it or not, that was worse than what just happened.
- 1:23But he decided to do it like a poetry slam, which makes it even better
- 1:28Ryan: I heard the snapping in the background.
- 1:31Jon: Yeah.
- 1:32Ryan: Just guess someone
- 1:32Kearns: It was like Mike Myers in, I Married an Axe Murderer.
- 1:37Ryan: Marion
- 1:40Kearns: Sharks in the water.
- 1:42What's up, everybody?
- 1:43It's Xenomania, and
- 1:45Jon: Yo, yo, yo.
- 1:46Kearns: something having to do with fishies this
- 1:48Jon: Yeah.
- 1:49Yeah.
- 1:50We're not doing Jaws.
- 1:51It's not Jaws yet.
- 1:53That's coming up
- 1:55Kearns: Can't wait to do Jaws.
- 1:56But we're not gonna talk about that anymore because it just, it
- 1:59does a disservice to this fine film that we're gonna talk about
- 2:02Jon: Yes, sir.
- 2:02Ryan: Doesn't.
- 2:03Jon: This week is,
- 2:04Ryan: Dangerous
- 2:05Jon: yeah, dangerous animals
- 2:08Ryan: Sorry.
- 2:08I'm excited for this because this was a IFC gem, as I like to call it.
- 2:13A lot of IFC movies, uh, I feel like go under the radar, now they're
- 2:18getting the recognition more.
- 2:19Like the remake of Maniac, um, Midnight Meat Train, all IFC movies
- 2:25that are finally getting the spotlight
- 2:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:28Ryan: and this is one of them.
- 2:29And this is more recent, which is cool, 'cause it's got that vibe of,
- 2:33like, that early 2000s, like, feel.
- 2:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:38Ryan: I was thinking, like, Wolf Creek especially when I was watching
- 2:41Kearns: Oh, good call.
- 2:42Jon: Yeah.
- 2:42Kearns: see the connection there
- 2:43Jon: Yeah, I mean, there, there's a few.
- 2:45They're very similar villains.
- 2:47They're both Australian.
- 2:50Kearns: Bastards.
- 2:51Jon: Yeah
- 2:51Ryan: Yeah.
- 2:52Kearns: The lot of them.
- 2:53Ryan: Australia,
- 2:54Kearns: One of my favorite podcasts that I've ever done, besides ours, of course,
- 2:58is with a bunch of Australian guys.
- 3:01Stories, the true and the fictional, baby.
- 3:02Little plug for them if you guys wanna listen to that.
- 3:05That is a great show.
- 3:07Um, so
- 3:11back to the Australian guys
- 3:13Ryan: I'll say Australians are fun.
- 3:15I'll just
- 3:15Jon: Yeah
- 3:16Ryan: Having family from Australia, they are wild and they're wild,
- 3:21Kearns: It's frontier living out there.
- 3:23When people think of the Wild West and what
- 3:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:25Kearns: America, like, so appealing way back for that vibe, that
- 3:29adventure vibe, um, Australia's still got a good amount of that
- 3:33Jon: Yeah.
- 3:33Kearns: their untouched
- 3:35Jon: I mean, everything in the coun- that country wants to kill you
- 3:38Kearns: Yeah.
- 3:38Ryan: But, ugh,
- 3:39Kearns: The country itself wants to
- 3:40Jon: Ah, the dingo,
- 3:42Kearns: the
- 3:42Jon: a dingo, a dingo ate my baby, man
- 3:46Ryan: I, I have a close heart with the
- 3:48Kearns: I think Naomi Watts was full of shit
- 3:50Ryan: school
- 3:51Kearns: personally, but you get that joke, we can be friends.
- 3:55But yeah, so, uh, by the way, just an aside before we move
- 3:58on, I watched Wolf Creek in a La Quinta Inn in Batavia, New York.
- 4:03I think I got it from like the dollar bin in Walmart or whatever it was, the $5 bin
- 4:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:09Kearns: and that was like part of my only entertainment for that
- 4:11weekend, and I was very impressed.
- 4:14I also saw The Hills Have Eyes in that same weekend, and that was another…
- 4:18I found I liked Wolf Creek better, but
- 4:22Jon: Yeah
- 4:23Ryan: Creek's got a good, good pace, good villain, and it's just
- 4:27like Dangerous Animals, right?
- 4:29You get the opening, benevolent, um, villain.
- 4:34He was… he was, he was benevolent.
- 4:36Kearns: No, he was benevolent
- 4:38Ryan: this.
- 4:38Jon: hmm
- 4:39Ryan: he's very benevolent.
- 4:40He's very, like, welcoming, open,
- 4:42Jon: He's,
- 4:43Kearns: s-
- 4:43Jon: he's welcoming in a sort of sinister way though, because you're never,
- 4:49Ryan: Yes
- 4:49Jon: you're never at peace with that character.
- 4:53Even, even in the beginning when he's talking to Greg and Heather and he's
- 4:56taking them out on the tour, he's… Like, everything he said and says
- 5:01has that tinge of evil undertones.
- 5:06Like, "Oh, yeah, it's gonna be great.
- 5:08You're gonna dive with the shark.
- 5:10Nothing bad's gonna happen." Like, that, you know, those kinds of
- 5:13lines, and he's al- like, always, like, right on that edge of, boy,
- 5:18is he making jokes or is he a creep?
- 5:22Ryan: I feel like that's Jai Courtney though, 'cause he's just
- 5:25like… First off, Jai Courtney, uh, Captain Boomerang in The Squad, both
- 5:29Kearns: Can't say the S word.
- 5:33Gotta self-monitor, brother
- 5:35Ryan: Hold on.
- 5:35Hold on.
- 5:36Jon: How do you say the name of that movie?
- 5:38Kearns: And the self-offing squad
- 5:40Ryan: No, no, no, I got a
- 5:41Jon: That sounds like, that sounds like the, the adult version
- 5:45Kearns: Yeah, might be.
- 5:48Ryan: So Jay Courtney, Ta- Skinamax?
- 5:52Uh, Task Force X. go for the original comic book name.
- 5:58In both of those movies, you can see his acting prowess really come out.
- 6:01He's done other roles, but just his facial expressions, which, like, even though
- 6:07he's benevolent or seemingly benevolent, you can see the craziness in his eyes
- 6:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:12Ryan: out of his head and just his motions.
- 6:15It's very jittery.
- 6:16It's very antagonistic.
- 6:18Jon: th- I think,
- 6:18Ryan: And it's not…
- 6:19Jon: no, finish it 'cause I'm going back to…
- 6:21Ryan: was, I was, I was gonna say it's not hidden.
- 6:23Jon: Mm-hmm
- 6:24Ryan: Like, how his acting is, he's not hiding the fact that he's a bad guy.
- 6:28You know, he's very open, and it starts even how he treats his,
- 6:32um, the guy who's running the boat
- 6:34Jon: Yeah
- 6:34Ryan: he treats him, how he treats the dog, his interactions with
- 6:38the, the first two tourists.
- 6:40Like, you just see it
- 6:43Jon: Yeah, I, I think my favorite Jake Courtney role before this that I didn't
- 6:48r- remember was him, is he's John McClane's son in A Good Day to Die Hard.
- 6:53Kearns: Oh, no way.
- 6:56Cool.
- 6:57That is a great callback right there.
- 6:59Ryan: That's… Oh,
- 7:00Kearns: Does he know what's going on with his dad?
- 7:02Ryan: He's on
- 7:03Kearns: Not, it's not good right
- 7:04Jon: Oh, it's no good.
- 7:05Kearns: No wonder he's so mad.
- 7:07Jon: But like,
- 7:07Kearns: Ugh,
- 7:08Jon: he snuck into a bunch of franchises.
- 7:10Like, he got in the DC Universe, he got in the Die Hard world.
- 7:14He was in one of the t- the really bad late Terminator sequels.
- 7:19He was in Genesis, Terminator Genesis
- 7:22Ryan: Yes.
- 7:23that
- 7:24Kearns: Yeah.
- 7:26I think it's the one where the robot, um, is… Like, the, is
- 7:30that the one with Batman in it?
- 7:33Ryan: No.
- 7:33Well, is
- 7:34Kearns: Is it Genesis that's that one?
- 7:36Jon: Oh.
- 7:37Kearns: is the one with the female liquid metal, but also
- 7:40Jon: Yeah
- 7:40Kearns: That's Salvation.
- 7:41And Salvation was good.
- 7:42I think Genesis was bad,
- 7:45Ryan: Yeah.
- 7:46Jon: the Genesis was not good
- 7:48Kearns: Yeah.
- 7:48How come I can't remember Batman's name?
- 7:50Help me, guys.
- 7:51Ryan: Christian
- 7:52Kearns: Yeah, Christian Bale was in it.
- 7:53Thank you.
- 7:53And then they-- He's a co-lead, which is weird for Bale, the
- 7:57other guy who's the Terminator who doesn't know he's a Terminator.
- 7:59Spoiler alert, everybody
- 8:02Ryan: I haven't seen it yet, man.
- 8:03Come on
- 8:03Kearns: Yeah, all right.
- 8:04Sorry, guys.
- 8:05Sorry, guys
- 8:06Ryan: just, just to say the real Batman is Michael Keaton.
- 8:09Christian Bale is a fake
- 8:11Jon: I mean, Mike,
- 8:12Kearns: gonna get into that
- 8:12Jon: Michael Keaton is my Batman, but I'm not, I won't, I won't
- 8:16offend Christian Bale fans.
- 8:18He's, he was fine
- 8:19Kearns: point out that Michelle Pfeiffer is my Catwoman as well.
- 8:23Jon: Yeah
- 8:24Kearns: Anne Hathaway is a, a fine lady
- 8:27Ryan: Zoë Kravitz
- 8:29Kearns: Oh, sure.
- 8:29Lenny Kravitz is my Lenny Kravitz.
- 8:31Jon: One of the things that I, I've thought about for a long time with
- 8:34shark movies is how close to slasher films they get, and then when,
- 8:41Ryan: Yeah
- 8:41Jon: when you add the element of a guy who's kind of a slasher as
- 8:45your main antagonist, now you've really accomplished it, and
- 8:50Dangerous Animals really does that.
- 8:52But if you think about it, like, Jaws predates Halloween,
- 8:56but the beats are very similar.
- 8:58You know, you have the, the danger lurking.
- 9:02A- as it gets closer, the score changes.
- 9:06You have-- Like, they build… A good slasher and a good shark
- 9:10movie build tension the same way
- 9:15Kearns: I completely agree.
- 9:17Uh, they're coming out of nowhere.
- 9:18You don't see them creeping up.
- 9:20A lot of first-person camera work is done in both the creep up.
- 9:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:25Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 9:26Ryan: big connection
- 9:26Jon: Mm-hmm
- 9:27Ryan: I mean, you can also say that Spielberg also borrowed
- 9:30from, like, Black Christmas too.
- 9:32Jon: Oh, yeah.
- 9:33Yeah
- 9:33Ryan: Yeah … it's an interchangeable thing with, I think, mostly shark
- 9:38movies, Jaws as we're talking about being the biggest one, because Spielberg
- 9:41does do that point of view shots.
- 9:43And then when did Jaws come out?
- 9:45'75? So three years later, you see Carpenter doing it all
- 9:50Jon: Mm-hmm
- 9:51Ryan: And like you said, there's that connection
- 9:53Jon: Yeah, and then, and then
- 9:54Ryan: The m-
- 9:54Jon: like once you get from Jaws to Halloween, it's an easy step to the
- 9:59rest of the slasher genre because of how many of them are just either
- 10:04direct rip-offs of Halloween or, you know, in some way inspired by Halloween
- 10:10Kearns: Yeah
- 10:12Jon: Benetti
- 10:12Ryan: True.
- 10:15Kearns: So Halloween is the best shark movie made.
- 10:19It's
- 10:19Jon: Yeah.
- 10:19Kearns: we're getting
- 10:20Jon: Yeah, Michael Myers is the best shark ever.
- 10:23Ryan: Holo Shark
- 10:24Jon: Yeah.
- 10:24Kearns: you elongate the mask a little Beetlejuice
- 10:27Jon: Yeah.
- 10:28Kearns: It's true.
- 10:30It's true.
- 10:30No, it's, the parallels are there.
- 10:32Um, it seems like the, they just took the blueprint and they were like, "Water,"
- 10:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:37Yeah.
- 10:38Kearns: there
- 10:38Jon: Yeah.
- 10:39Yeah.
- 10:41I mean, it, it, to some extent, he, Spielberg is sort of ripping himself off
- 10:45with Jaws and those sort of beats because he start- he does that really first in
- 10:49Duel, which is, you know, s- not quite slasher, not, definitely not shark, but
- 10:55it's, it's got a lot of the same elements.
- 10:57And, you know, when you have somebody like John Williams scoring
- 11:01so many of your movies, you're always gonna have the ability to use
- 11:06music in that kinda suspenseful way
- 11:10Kearns: Good point.
- 11:10I forget how much John Williams has to do with success, and Joseph Campbell.
- 11:16We can't forget him.
- 11:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:17Mm-hmm.
- 11:21Kearns: hours, but if you don't know who Joseph Campbell is, look it up,
- 11:23then look up how much that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg should
- 11:27give him because, Well, he's dead, but they should give his estate.
- 11:32I don't know.
- 11:34So yeah, definitely the slasher-y.
- 11:36And
- 11:36Jon: Yeah
- 11:37Kearns: It doesn't take the movie long to move into the realm of slasher, too.
- 11:42John and I both definitely saw it coming when, um, and Ryan may have
- 11:46thought he was being benevolent.
- 11:47Maybe it surprised you a little bit more.
- 11:49But when he decides to stick, stick, stick hubby and shove him off the
- 11:54boat, that's when the tone shifts.
- 11:58But you knew it was coming, and they foreshadow it a little bit
- 12:00when they're in the cage and everything's peaceful and the music
- 12:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:03Kearns: nice.
- 12:04You're like, "Oh, something
- 12:04Jon: And,
- 12:05Kearns: gonna
- 12:05Jon: and you finally get Heather calmed down enough to, to be enjoying herself
- 12:10and, you know, they come back up and they… Bruce Tucker is ready to go
- 12:17Kearns: Yes, sir. It's funny too that they build the suspense of you thinking
- 12:21a shark is going to be the thing, and then the dangerous animal turns out to be
- 12:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:26Yep.
- 12:27Ryan: a human
- 12:27Jon: The most dangerous of animals.
- 12:30Kearns: The most dangerous game.
- 12:32So yeah
- 12:34Ryan: got an interesting backstory though, Tucker.
- 12:37Kearns: Let's hear it
- 12:38Ryan: right before, like, he sends Greg and Heather to their… Well,
- 12:43Greg to his demise, I should say.
- 12:45Heather, he just throws in the brig. But he got bit by a shark when he was
- 12:49a young kid, and by s- like, on the side, and he shows the whole teeth
- 12:53mark, which was cool pr- I would presume practical effects on there.
- 12:57I
- 12:57Jon: A- apparently, apparently reading interviews with director
- 13:00Sean Byrne, it, 80% of this movie was practical and real sharks, and like
- 13:07Ryan: Okay
- 13:08Jon: 20% is CGI stuff
- 13:10Kearns: are we gonna talk about that 20% later on.
- 13:13Oh, boy.
- 13:14Ryan: The
- 13:15Kearns: But
- 13:15Ryan: that they should not have included
- 13:17Kearns: we segue over to my favorite type of person, a gypsy type of person.
- 13:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:22Kearns: girl from the United States who've decided to go to Australia,
- 13:25has a weird van she lives out of, and
- 13:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:28Kearns: And that's, like,
- 13:29Jon: Yeah
- 13:30Kearns: herself or whatever.
- 13:31Nobody really cares.
- 13:32But it was neat.
- 13:33And then
- 13:33Jon: Yeah.
- 13:34Kearns: a guy, and they make it seem like she doesn't do this kind of thing all
- 13:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:38Kearns: And they, they s- you know, they bump uglies a little bit in the
- 13:41Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:41Kearns: 'cause that's what you do when you're
- 13:43Jon: I, yeah, so with, with Zephyr, I think she's sorta like ne- the neo-hippie.
- 13:48You know, she…
- 13:50Ryan: Yeah.
- 13:51Jon: And, and Moses, the guy she hooks up with, is like, you know, rich kid.
- 13:57Kearns: Yeah, he's a rich kid, but
- 13:59Jon: kid
- 13:59Kearns: surfs.
- 14:00He's got everything figured out,
- 14:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:02Kearns: that kind of thing
- 14:03Jon: Yeah.
- 14:04Ryan: He's… Does he
- 14:05Jon: he's, he, like… So Moses, when you meet him, feels like he's gonna
- 14:10be just such a throwaway character.
- 14:13Like, he's just someone who's gonna have a connection to Zephyr and,
- 14:17like, he's just gets, you know
- 14:19Kearns: I mean, I would argue he does, he is that.
- 14:22He's fills space
- 14:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:24Kearns: that they need to fill.
- 14:25Like, "Where's Zephyr?"
- 14:27Jon: Yeah.
- 14:27Kearns: he gets to run around looking
- 14:29Jon: Yeah.
- 14:30Ryan: Yeah, and it worked.
- 14:31Jon: But like he, he's the,
- 14:32Ryan: You
- 14:32Jon: he's the kind of guy you could've offed within five minutes
- 14:35of meeting him and, uh, most people wouldn't have ever thought about
- 14:38like a lost possibility or, you know, what that character could have been.
- 14:43And instead, like Sean Byrne leaves him there and Sean Byrne
- 14:47had like-- He doesn't do a lot.
- 14:50He does not work a lot.
- 14:52Dangerous Animals was his first movie in 10 years.
- 14:56Kearns: Whoa,
- 14:57Jon: Yeah.
- 14:57Kearns: somebody money
- 14:58Jon: Yeah.
- 14:59And the, the movie-- It's not like the movie before this was like smash hit.
- 15:03He, he made Devil's Candy, which I've, I've talked to you guys about
- 15:07a bit, which I really, really love.
- 15:11Um, and he also made a movie called The Loved Ones, which I haven't seen,
- 15:15which, uh, it sounds like borders more into the torture elements of
- 15:19horror that I'm not super into.
- 15:21But I know it's, it's
- 15:22Kearns: Yeah,
- 15:23Jon: very well-loved
- 15:25Kearns: Okay.
- 15:27Little S&M lovers can enjoy that film.
- 15:30I'll,
- 15:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:30Kearns: a review and see if it's for me.
- 15:32Jon: Yeah.
- 15:33Like, I mean, the,
- 15:34Ryan: The
- 15:34Jon: the story, the story in s- itself is pretty interesting, but it
- 15:39definitely goes into a lot of like, hostile type of torture stuff that,
- 15:43like, doesn't… It's not for me
- 15:45Ryan: Nah, I'm good.
- 15:47No hostile
- 15:48Jon: Oh, you know, I, if, if that, if that's what you like, that's fine.
- 15:51I, I don't, so
- 15:53Ryan: Yep.
- 15:53Agreed.
- 15:55Agreed with that.
- 15:56respect what, what, you know, we respect what you like, but
- 15:59Jon: so, um, Dangerous Animals with its two, $2 million
- 16:04budget premiered at Cannes.
- 16:09Yeah.
- 16:10Yeah.
- 16:10It, so it, it's the first Australian movie to do so since 2014.
- 16:17A mo- a movie c-
- 16:18Kearns: full name?
- 16:19For those listeners who might not know,
- 16:21Jon: Oh goodness.
- 16:22Kearns: about Comic-Con
- 16:24Jon: Oh goodness.
- 16:24I don't, I don't know the full name of the actual festival, but the
- 16:28South of France Cannes Film Festival
- 16:31so y- so yeah, to 2014, a movie called These Final Hours premiered there, and
- 16:37until Dangerous Animals, no Australian movie had premiered at Cannes.
- 16:43And it's also, I, I find this to be maybe even more interesting, it's the first
- 16:49shark movie to ever play at the festival
- 16:53Kearns: I mean, that makes sense.
- 16:54That's kind of
- 16:55Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:56Kearns: movie came out besides the one with Blake Lively
- 16:59Jon: Mm-hmm
- 17:00Ryan: Well,
- 17:00Kearns: nobody saw?
- 17:02Ryan: maybe like a documentary or something you would think Premiere
- 17:05Jon: I don't… But I,
- 17:06Ryan: They do
- 17:06Jon: I…
- 17:06Ryan: that sometimes
- 17:07Jon: Yeah, I don't know that I… Like, I'm not super familiar with, like, the
- 17:12programming for that festival, but I don't, I don't remember s- ever hearing
- 17:17about a ton of documentaries there
- 17:20Ryan: Like one or a few,
- 17:21Jon: Yeah.
- 17:22Ryan: like it's not like Sundance level
- 17:24Jon: Yeah, no
- 17:25Kearns: I think that the fact that this did well at Cannes and, um, the fact that
- 17:30enough buzz was generated about it, I feel like this movie would've been pretty well
- 17:36unspoken of besides people who enjoy the genre and things like that 10 years ago.
- 17:42I, the f- I think it's a great movie.
- 17:44I- well, great might be a strong word.
- 17:45I really enjoyed it, though, for, and it, it's gonna be one of those
- 17:48conversations for what it is.
- 17:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:50Kearns: It's not trying to be something it's not either.
- 17:52It's very good at what it is, and the fact that people are talking about it brings
- 17:56up the idea to me again that I think the world is a little starved for content.
- 18:01Jon: Oh.
- 18:01Kearns: a bit of a new idea.
- 18:03Jon: Yeah
- 18:03Kearns: It's not a rehash.
- 18:04It's not a series or whatever, a franchise, and there's not
- 18:09a lot of that out right now
- 18:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:12Ryan: You need those, like, these movies where it's just
- 18:15like a one and done, 'cause it keeps, like, people wanting more.
- 18:19They wanna see, like, what's next for the director, what's
- 18:21next in the genre coming out.
- 18:24I feel like sometimes, yes, a franchise can work.
- 18:28Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, but there's some
- 18:31cases where they just don't work and it just, everything gets watered
- 18:34Jon: Now,
- 18:35Kearns: Yeah
- 18:35Jon: yeah, I mean, I mean, but even with the franchises you
- 18:39mentioned, they get watered down.
- 18:41Like
- 18:42Kearns: Later on
- 18:43Jon: you go Halloween one and then before long you have Thorn Cults
- 18:48and Paul Rudd and like all thi- all this other stuff going on.
- 18:52Ryan: my colt.
- 18:54Jon: Yeah.
- 18:54Ryan: with my
- 18:54Jon: It,
- 18:55Ryan: the thorn
- 18:56Jon: it, I think it's probably very difficult to keep something like
- 19:01that at a high level over that-
- 19:04Kearns: can't, and I don't think that they should destroy
- 19:06good work by being money-hungry
- 19:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:09Kearns: We're gonna leave that word
- 19:10Jon: Yeah, and, and i- and if, if you look at a lot of the franchises you
- 19:14mentioned, they started really well.
- 19:16The first Halloween is a classic.
- 19:19The f- the first couple Friday the 13ths are really well-made movies.
- 19:24Um, The Nightmare on Elm Streets are good for about three movies, and
- 19:29then they start to… Four is okay.
- 19:32Four is okay, but four sort of starts, is, four is y- you see
- 19:37the cracks that are coming.
- 19:39But like the,
- 19:40Ryan: agree with that
- 19:41Jon: you know, that it's hard to k- Like when you have, when you've
- 19:45created these iconic characters and you have to keep them going that way,
- 19:50uh, you know, you sort of run out of things that you can do with them.
- 19:55And
- 19:55Ryan: true.
- 19:56Jon: only, so many babysitters Michael Myers can take out
- 20:01Ryan: no, you're
- 20:02Jon: so one of you guys was, wanted to ask what's scarier, being
- 20:07kidnapped or attacked by a shark?
- 20:10Kearns: Have we considered land sharks?
- 20:13What about kidnapping land sharks?
- 20:16Jon: Jimmy Buffets?
- 20:17Kearns: Then it's both.
- 20:18Jimmy Buffet
- 20:19Ryan: shut
- 20:20Kearns: right, we're cutting the episode.
- 20:21It's not getting any better than Jimmy Buffet.
- 20:25Ah, that's a… All right, so being kidnapped or… Is this like when
- 20:28women ask the question, um, "Would you rather be stuck with a man or a bear?"
- 20:34Jon: I mean, it's,
- 20:35Ryan: Yes
- 20:35Jon: it's kind of, but, um, so I'll, I'll, I'll throw a little
- 20:39addition into being kidnapped.
- 20:41Being kidnapped by a serial killer or attacked by sharks
- 20:46Kearns: Okay.
- 20:48All right
- 20:49Jon: Why?
- 20:50Why attacked by sharks?
- 20:52Ryan: I feel like you can at least there's a chance, there's
- 20:56a chance to escape, right?
- 20:58Maybe there's a boat coming by, jump on the boat, wave down, shoot a flare.
- 21:02All right.
- 21:03If you're kidnapped by a serial killer,
- 21:06bad things, you know, you're willing to, you know, maybe take an appendage
- 21:12off to get out of the restraints.
- 21:14Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 21:14Ryan: You know, that was
- 21:17Jon: Yeah.
- 21:18Ryan: I just saw that and
- 21:18Jon: Yeah.
- 21:20Ryan: but I wouldn't want to be kidnapped by a serial killer.
- 21:22I like, no, I can just imagine the dungeon
- 21:26Kearns: but
- 21:27Ryan: style.
- 21:27Kearns: you rather be attacked by sharks than get kidnapped by a serial killer?
- 21:32Ryan: Yes.
- 21:34Kearns: Yes.
- 21:34Ryan: uh, it'd be painless too.
- 21:37Kearns: Oh, so in both scenarios we're, we're done.
- 21:40Uh
- 21:40Jon: yeah.
- 21:41I mean, you're…
- 21:41Ryan: what I, that's what I'm figuring out now.
- 21:43Kearns: So that's the question is how would you rather meet Cher Maker?
- 21:47Jon: I, I mean, I th- I th- I think ultimately that's really the question
- 21:51we're getting to is wh- which, which is your, uh, your choice.
- 21:56I mean, 'cause I've seen, I've seen and listened to…
- 22:00Kearns: on fighting.
- 22:02Jon: Okay, go- you can,
- 22:03Ryan: That's
- 22:03Jon: do that.
- 22:04Yeah, go.
- 22:05Dude, go with that.
- 22:06Kearns: win, but g- you can try.
- 22:08But that's the thing is that sharks have always terrified me,
- 22:11and the ocean still does too, 'cause you're not in your element.
- 22:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:15Kearns: It-- What-- If it, was tuned to get you, which it's not, which
- 22:20is even more terrifying to think about, you would have zero shot.
- 22:25Jon: Uh-huh
- 22:25Kearns: Zero shot.
- 22:26N- There's nothing you can do.
- 22:27But as-- at least if you're kidnapped and somebody's gonna… There are
- 22:31beats along the way where you might be able to escape or fight back.
- 22:35You've got a chance 'cause you're on, you know, g- the ground,
- 22:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:38Kearns: and there's things that might be in your favor.
- 22:40So I think you have more of a chance against the serial killer person
- 22:44Jon: Okay
- 22:44Kearns: were just being attacked by six bull sharks in the middle of the ocean.
- 22:48You're just done.
- 22:51Jon: Fair.
- 22:52I, I'm gonna say the sharks.
- 22:54I would, I would much rather try to handle the sharks because I've
- 22:57listened and watched enough true crime, enough serial killer stuff to know
- 23:02how inventive that winds up being.
- 23:05And like I would much rather take my chance with a couple
- 23:08sharks than with Dahmer.
- 23:11Ryan: Yeah.
- 23:12Jon: You know, I,
- 23:12Kearns: a fair point
- 23:13Jon: I'm not, I'm not terribly interested in ultimately being a human being's food
- 23:18And,
- 23:18Ryan: they're shark
- 23:19Jon: and, a- and, and also, I mean, I- a lot of the times the shark,
- 23:23it's just, "Oh, I'm gonna come up and take a quick bite because you look
- 23:27like food," and then it's, that's it.
- 23:31Kearns: other times.
- 23:32Jon: That's it
- 23:32Kearns: you ever see the dude in Egypt?
- 23:35This was, like, 2020.
- 23:36That was one of the hardest videos I've ever seen on the internet.
- 23:39Jon: Yeah, that one was rough.
- 23:41That was,
- 23:41Kearns: was worse than any of those.
- 23:43Jon: was, that was rough
- 23:46Ryan: That did not go on my radar.
- 23:48Kearns: So that was, you were witnessing
- 23:49Jon: you missed that one?
- 23:50Kearns: a shark actively feeding on a person.
- 23:53Like, it was intending to eat him, and it, it did a pretty good job of
- 23:57Jon: Yeah.
- 23:58Yeah.
- 23:59Ryan: Hmm.
- 23:59Jon: Yeah
- 24:00Kearns: was way more off-putting than anything in this movie,
- 24:02I can tell you that much
- 24:02Jon: Yeah.
- 24:04It's way, it's worse than anything you see in any movie because it's real.
- 24:09Kearns: It's
- 24:09Jon: You can't-
- 24:10Kearns: Brian, if you, if you don't have to watch it, I wouldn't,
- 24:13'cause it's, it's one of those things that stays with you forever
- 24:17Ryan: I'm shocked that went over my radar during that
- 24:20Jon: Yeah.
- 24:20Ryan: talking 2020 COVID
- 24:22Jon: I think
- 24:23Ryan: Like stuck
- 24:23Kearns: And then maybe a little po-- actually, no, it was a little later
- 24:25'cause I remember everybody didn't care 'cause the dude was Russian
- 24:28and Russia had just invaded Ukraine.
- 24:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:32Kearns: And he was, like, one of the dudes who ran away from Russia, ran away.
- 24:35He was on a vacation in Egypt, but he ran away to not get conscripted was the idea.
- 24:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:42Kearns: Then he got conscripted by a tiger shark instead
- 24:45Jon: But thi- this also sort of flows into something else I w- I thought we
- 24:50should bring up, and that's how, how sharks have become vilified in, in movies
- 24:57and pop culture, and, you know, really sort of unintentionally goes back to Jaws
- 25:06Kearns: Is that the first example of a movie, a mainstream movie where
- 25:10the shark is used as the scary thing?
- 25:13Jon: Pretty much.
- 25:14Like, I,
- 25:15Kearns: Yeah, it must be there
- 25:16Jon: I mean, I, I, there, there has to have been sharks in movies before that,
- 25:21but, like, "Jaws" is the big scary.
- 25:23And "Jaws" is, um… So I found this, this quote from a Dr. Chris Pepeneff, um,
- 25:30Kearns: Epinephrine.
- 25:31Jon: yeah, is about what he called the Jaws effect.
- 25:36Kearns: Ooh, I like it
- 25:37Jon: Yeah.
- 25:38And it's, you know, it's the, the fear was so intense that
- 25:42shark hunting became common.
- 25:45Like, the, you wa- people watched "Jaws" and now it's, ' cause "Jaws"
- 25:50portrays the shark as, you know, just a mindless killing machine
- 25:55that's going to eat people, which is ultimately not the reality.
- 26:02Like, sharks, most sharks are not actively hunting people.
- 26:07If most shark attacks are, they mistook you for something
- 26:10that is actually their food
- 26:12Ryan: Which they depict pretty well
- 26:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:14Ryan: as well,
- 26:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:15Ryan: with the chum and stuff.
- 26:16Like,
- 26:16Jon: Yeah.
- 26:17Ryan: lures them in and they're confused with it, but still and all that.
- 26:22It's very similar to, like, a bear, I feel
- 26:24Jon: Yeah, and that, that
- 26:25Kearns: quick, that quick attack and then they leave too in the movie for the most
- 26:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:30And that,
- 26:31Kearns: that well
- 26:31Jon: and that's something that Byrne really wanted to focus on
- 26:35with this too, is, um, like he makes a point of, in interviews talking
- 26:41about how the shark attacks are a result of human manipulation.
- 26:46That the sharks are not, they, he, like he wanted to show them as majestic.
- 26:52You know?
- 26:52As like these beautiful creatures of the ocean that, you know,
- 26:57they're just doing what sharks do
- 27:00Kearns: Right
- 27:01Ryan: Sure
- 27:02Jon: And, you know, a- as a result, like, I mean, I f- I found
- 27:05this, uh, uh, you know, an, a, a report on endangered animals.
- 27:10As much, many as one-third of shark species are endangered, and a lot
- 27:16of that… Like, you know, you get the, the usual, uh, climate change
- 27:21issues and stuff involved in that.
- 27:23But from, like, the release of Jaws up until pretty recently, you had
- 27:28sport fishing, you had mass hunting of sharks because of that fear
- 27:34Kearns: Don't forget about shark fin soup too,
- 27:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:37Kearns: grab them,
- 27:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:38Kearns: the fin off, and then they throw the rest of the
- 27:40shark right back in the ocean.
- 27:41Jon: Yeah.
- 27:42Kearns: Yeah, that's no good.
- 27:46Jon: Oh
- 27:46Kearns: No good.
- 27:48Now that you bummed us out, John, do we have a game this week?
- 27:51Jon: Of course we do.
- 27:53Of course there's a game.
- 27:54so it's, you know, it's our standard, slasher stache.
- 27:59I am, again, not, I'm not gonna make it a guess because if you both
- 28:03don't have it from the first movie, I don't know what we're doing here
- 28:07Kearns: Is it sharks?
- 28:09Jon: Uh, of course it's sharks.
- 28:11And there's our, there's number one.
- 28:15It's Jaws 2.
- 28:17Are we stashing or slashing Jaws 2?
- 28:22Kearns: What do you think, Ryan?
- 28:25Ryan: Slash.
- 28:27It's not just one.
- 28:28Kearns: It's not.
- 28:29But for a sequel, it holds up pretty well as they go.
- 28:34I, I mean, we're not gonna talk about Jaws 3 right now.
- 28:37Ryan: I was gonna say, yeah.
- 28:38Jon: not yet
- 28:39Kearns: 2's got a pretty good beat system.
- 28:42didn't do Jaws 2, did he?
- 28:44Ryan: No.
- 28:45Kearns: No, you can't really tell.
- 28:48Oh, did he?
- 28:49Ryan: I would s-
- 28:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:51Ryan: no, he didn't do
- 28:51Kearns: Oh, he did.
- 28:52I mean, they just,
- 28:53Ryan: the soup
- 28:53Kearns: they did a pretty good job.
- 28:54The tethering of the boats together at the end with all the
- 28:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:57Kearns: trying to stay and the way, with the way the chief
- 29:00gets his victory in this one.
- 29:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:03Kearns: Pretty solid all around.
- 29:05Trying to remember what the first attack was like
- 29:08Ryan: be on this.
- 29:09Wait, is Deep Blue Sea a Shark Fit movie?
- 29:13Kearns: His hat is like a shark fin, Ryan.
- 29:15Jon: Yeah, deepest bluest
- 29:17Kearns: Lu- C. I'm gonna s- I'm gonna stash it.
- 29:19I know I shouldn't, but I'm gonna stash Jaws 2.
- 29:21I really like Jaws 2.
- 29:23I don't care what you people say
- 29:26Ryan: We're, we're not shaming you.
- 29:27Kearns: You are with your
- 29:28Jon: No, I,
- 29:28Ryan: you.
- 29:29Jon: I,
- 29:29Ryan: We're with you.
- 29:30Jon: I can f- I can find, I can find things to love about all four Jaws movies.
- 29:36Kearns: I love Jaws
- 29:36Jon: Even 4, even 4.
- 29:38As bad as 4 is, I still love that movie.
- 29:42All right.
- 29:43Kearns: accents
- 29:47Jon: we get The Reef
- 29:49Ryan: Ooh.
- 29:51This is good.
- 29:53This is the one they get become stranded, right?
- 29:56Jon: There's a few of those.
- 29:57Ryan: of a different one?
- 29:58Jon: a few of those, but yeah
- 30:02Yeah.
- 30:03I mean, generally you're… With the shark movies, stranded is,
- 30:06is a very common alternate theme
- 30:10So how do we feel about the reef?
- 30:12Kearns: I'm slashing it.
- 30:15It's fine.
- 30:18I like the reef, but it's no Jaws 2
- 30:22Ryan: I'll s- I'll slash it too.
- 30:23Jon: All right
- 30:24Ryan: I'm,
- 30:25Kearns: Doing it.
- 30:25Doing it
- 30:26Ryan: I've, I, I think I'm confusing it with another film because I'm
- 30:29looking at the cover, but I've heard good things about The Reef
- 30:33Jon: All right.
- 30:34Number three, we get bait.
- 30:38Kearns: I, seen Bait.
- 30:40I just love his facial expression
- 30:43Jon: I really enjoyed Bait.
- 30:45Bait is, Bait has the kind of goofiness that, uh, Crawl has with, you know,
- 30:50the, the killer animals being washed in on the storm, and it, like,
- 30:54it's very similar to that, the new Netflix movie Thrash in that regard
- 31:01Kearns: Okay.
- 31:02I haven't seen it, so I'm gonna slash it, but
- 31:07Ryan: I'm with you on that.
- 31:07I haven't seen this.
- 31:08This is too
- 31:10Kearns: the fact that John takes meticulous notes on what we do with
- 31:13this is freaking me out, 'cause I feel like all of this is gonna come
- 31:16back to bite us years down the line
- 31:18Ryan: It, it's a Xenomania
- 31:20Jon: So many notes.
- 31:22Kearns: so many notes
- 31:23Ryan: how you f-
- 31:23Jon: S-
- 31:23Ryan: you
- 31:24Jon: I have them all
- 31:27Kearns: It's crazy.
- 31:29We gotta put it… Don't digitize that actually
- 31:34Jon: It's for the, for the board game home edition
- 31:37Kearns: Nice
- 31:40Jon: All right.
- 31:42Movie number four, 47 Meters Down
- 31:47Kearns: Mandy Moore.
- 31:49Do-do.
- 31:50Ah.
- 31:52This was a remarkably forgettable movie too
- 31:56Ryan: I remember watching it once and that was it
- 31:59Jon: I was kind of surprised by this 'cause I, liked 47 Meters
- 32:04Down more than I expected to
- 32:07Kearns: Yeah, but it wasn't, it wasn't terrible.
- 32:10Jon: No
- 32:10Kearns: like that Jessica Alba, Paul Walker movie, terrible.
- 32:14The hell was that one called?
- 32:16Um, yeah, like
- 32:18Jon: Shallows?
- 32:19Was that The Shallows?
- 32:21Kearns: No, that was like Deep Blue or something,
- 32:25Jon: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 32:26I, yeah
- 32:28Kearns: Like Blue Crush or some stupid name.
- 32:30Jon: I- yeah, it was Blue Crush, I think.
- 32:32I'm pretty sure it was Blue Crush
- 32:33Kearns: that was the worst movie ever made.
- 32:35Um,
- 32:37Ryan: Worse
- 32:37Kearns: I gotta slash this too, man.
- 32:40I'm sorry, 47 Meters Down, I gotta do it to you
- 32:43Jon: Yeah
- 32:44Ryan: Yeah, it's not as memorable seeing it once, so I'm slashing it as well.
- 32:48Jon: All right.
- 32:49Ryan: remember the poster,
- 32:50Jon: Ry-
- 32:50Ryan: but
- 32:50Jon: Ryan, you're heading into a spot where you're gonna
- 32:52be stashing a lot of stuff
- 32:55Ryan: I'm fine with that
- 32:56Jon: All right.
- 32:58Next movie,
- 32:59Ryan: Oh
- 32:59Jon: The Meg
- 33:00Ryan: I'll st- I'll stash.
- 33:02Kearns: This movie's so bad.
- 33:04so bad
- 33:05Ryan: it's Jason Statham so good though,
- 33:08Jon: Yeah,
- 33:08Ryan: right?
- 33:09Jon: th- this is definitely a, a so bad it's good for me.
- 33:12Like, I've watched this way more times than I care to admit to
- 33:16Kearns: I love when it just unleashes on the tourists
- 33:19Jon: Uh-huh
- 33:20Kearns: time for the Meg to go.
- 33:21didn't see the sequel though
- 33:23Jon: It's not good.
- 33:25They introduce some, some land creatures.
- 33:28It's a, it's a mess.
- 33:30I, I think I only watched the second one once, but this one I've a bunch of times
- 33:36Kearns: to watch The Meg again tonight.
- 33:37Um, I'm gonna slash The Meg 2.
- 33:40Jon: Well.
- 33:45Kearns: it's a B movie.
- 33:48Jon: Mm-hmm
- 33:49Kearns: you got coming up.
- 33:50I know there's some good movies with sharks in them.
- 33:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:53But did I put them on here?
- 33:55Kearns: that's my real
- 33:57Jon: So,
- 33:57Kearns: yeah
- 33:58Jon: so let me ask you, have I ever doubled up on a
- 34:01franchise in one of these games?
- 34:03Kearns: Never
- 34:04Ryan: No, you haven't.
- 34:06Jon: Hmm.
- 34:07Ryan: Gee willikers
- 34:08Jon: And you might be waiting for s-
- 34:09Kearns: missing Jaws.
- 34:10Jon: y- you might be waiting for something that doesn't come.
- 34:13Um,
- 34:13Kearns: It's true
- 34:16Jon: Deep Lucy
- 34:17Kearns: I gotta stash it.
- 34:18I gotta stash it.
- 34:19That's what I've been waiting for, baby.
- 34:21This cover is enough reason to stash it
- 34:24Jon: I l-
- 34:24Ryan: It's a good movie
- 34:25Jon: I love this stupid movie so much
- 34:28Kearns: It's so bad.
- 34:29It's so-- I mean, it's so good, but it's so bad
- 34:33Ryan: out?
- 34:34'98?
- 34:35Kearns: The cojones to take out Samuel L. Jackson too.
- 34:40Epic
- 34:40Jon: Right after that speech about pulling it together and surviving
- 34:46and getting out of here and
- 34:48Kearns: Think water's fast?
- 34:49Try ice.
- 34:52Jon: chomp
- 34:55Kearns: I saw this movie in the theaters.
- 34:57Ryan: I was saying
- 34:57Jon: Yeah, I did too.
- 34:58Ryan: right?
- 34:59Kearns: Yeah
- 35:00Jon: Yeah, right around there.
- 35:01Yeah
- 35:02Ryan: Like the summer?
- 35:03'Cause that was, it was a big
- 35:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:05Ryan: thing
- 35:05Jon: I feel like it was an August release, but I'm, I'm
- 35:10not, I don't know that for sure
- 35:13Kearns: One more Stash left.
- 35:14How many movies do we have left?
- 35:15Jon: Um, two.
- 35:17Ryan: too
- 35:18Jon: you both have one and one.
- 35:20Here is your penultimate.
- 35:22Open water
- 35:23Ryan: this is, this is the one I was thinking about.
- 35:26Yes, Stash.
- 35:27is a good movie
- 35:29Kearns: This is a hard one to watch.
- 35:31Ryan: It's so good though
- 35:32Kearns: Meaning, I mean, it is good.
- 35:33Yeah, it's not, like, bad.
- 35:34I don't mean that.
- 35:35I mean it's a hard movie to watch.
- 35:37Ryan: forget them, right?
- 35:38This is the one.
- 35:39They forget them in the water
- 35:40Jon: Yep.
- 35:41Ryan: to camp-
- 35:41Jon: Yep.
- 35:42Kearns: And you, you're expecting them to have some sort of a chance
- 35:45and, uh, that's not a thing.
- 35:49Jon: Yep
- 35:49Ryan: I'm trying … I think I saw this in, I saw this in theaters
- 35:53Kearns: plays on, what is the type of phobia, um, when, of
- 35:56open water and deep things?
- 35:59It plays on that fear a lot, too.
- 36:01When you're
- 36:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:02Kearns: there, if you're just out there floating, I mean, dude, what
- 36:06a horrible, horrible way to go
- 36:09Jon: Yeah.
- 36:10And to go, to go back to our opener, that's, I mean, that's basically what
- 36:14that story is from Jaws where, you know, Quint is talking about the USS
- 36:19Indianapolis and all those guys that went into the water, and they were just
- 36:25Kearns: waiting
- 36:26Jon: Yeah
- 36:29That, that's a me- that's a messed up story, by the way.
- 36:32The whole US and I- Indianapolis thing is a, just a messed up
- 36:36story, forgetting the Sharks
- 36:39Kearns: Yeah, the Sharks are bad, but the… Everything
- 36:42about delivering a little boy
- 36:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:45I mean, uh, one- once those guys were torpedoed, it didn't matter
- 36:48if there were sharks or not.
- 36:50They, they were doomed 'cause no one knew where they were
- 36:54Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 36:56So what John's alluding to, listeners at home, the USS Indianapolis, if
- 37:01you watch Jaws you might remember, delivered the first nuke to the la-
- 37:07to the airstrip where it was gonna be fitted into the Enola Gay and then
- 37:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:12Kearns: Hiroshima, I believe.
- 37:13And then
- 37:15Jon: Yep.
- 37:15Kearns: ship was, it was a super secret mission, so
- 37:18Jon: Yeah
- 37:19Kearns: and a Japanese sub sank it, and then the men were just there.
- 37:23How many
- 37:23Jon: Yep.
- 37:25Oh, a lot.
- 37:26Kearns: one.
- 37:26It
- 37:27Jon: Yeah.
- 37:27Kearns: one
- 37:28Jon: Yeah, like long enough that you start getting all those,
- 37:31like, stranded at sea problems.
- 37:33You know, the consuming saltwater delirium, the, the, um, the
- 37:40freezing hypochondri- the hypochondria, hyp- hypothermia.
- 37:46You know, like, you, you get that.
- 37:49Kearns: Yeah.
- 37:51Jon: So
- 37:52Kearns: moving on.
- 37:53Oh, I'm slashing open water because it makes me sad.
- 37:57I'm gonna g-
- 37:57Jon: All right.
- 37:58Kearns: dice and see what you got up last
- 37:59Jon: All right, so Ryan is slashing this one, and Kerns, you're stashing
- 38:06it, and one of you is gonna be…
- 38:08Ryan: it?
- 38:09Kearns: it.
- 38:10Jon: no, you're slashing this, but
- 38:12Kearns: Oh,
- 38:12Jon: you have,
- 38:13Kearns: coming
- 38:13Jon: you have one stash left.
- 38:15Ryan has his, a slash left.
- 38:18One of you is gonna be, one of you is gonna be pretty disappointed, I think.
- 38:24There it is
- 38:24Kearns: knew it.
- 38:25I knew it, you bastard.
- 38:26Jon: There it is
- 38:27Kearns: knew it.
- 38:28I'm so happy.
- 38:29Ryan, he screwed you so hard.
- 38:31Ryan: Oh, he
- 38:31Kearns: How does that make you feel?
- 38:32Ryan: doub- did I ever double up on franchises before, right?
- 38:35No, he made a good point.
- 38:37Jon: I hate,
- 38:37Ryan: point
- 38:38Jon: hadn't.
- 38:39Now, I, I'm gonna let you, let you in on a little secret about including Jaws here.
- 38:45I was going to not include Jaws and go on the, belief that you would expect
- 38:50Jaws to be the last one, and make the last one Shark Tale, so one of you would
- 38:55have had to, had to stash Shark Tale
- 38:57Kearns: time ago you had to make it horror related though.
- 39:00Jon: I did, yeah.
- 39:01Ryan: been good
- 39:02Jon: I, I, but e-
- 39:02Kearns: lied to yourself
- 39:03Jon: even, even that wasn't the reason I didn't do that.
- 39:06It was because I had the intro written out and I didn't wanna have to change it.
- 39:10Kearns: Fair.
- 39:11That's a fair point.
- 39:13Ryan: I'm, you know what?
- 39:14I'm still fine with my picks.
- 39:16I'm still fine
- 39:16Jon: you slashed Jaws.
- 39:19Kearns: Jaws.
- 39:20Jon: be that fine with your picks
- 39:22Ryan: You want, you know what, though?
- 39:23I didn't slash the thing, so I am fine with that.
- 39:28Kearns: Why you gotta put it on me, buddy?
- 39:30This is about
- 39:31Jon: Listen,
- 39:32Kearns: about
- 39:32Jon: listen.
- 39:33Ryan: only
- 39:33Kearns: failures.
- 39:33Jon: Here,
- 39:35Kearns: failure
- 39:36Jon: here, here's the problem with how you did this, how you played this off, out.
- 39:41None of the movies that you stashed exist anymore because you got rid of "Jaws."
- 39:47Ryan: Can we rewind?
- 39:48Please, please be
- 39:49Jon: you,
- 39:50Ryan: rewind.
- 39:50Jon: in,
- 39:51Ryan: All
- 39:51Jon: in, in, in Ryan world, there are no more shark movies
- 39:57Ryan: I have still Cocaine Bear, Grizzly
- 39:59Jon: And no, you probably don't, 'cause those are all from the Sharks too, but
- 40:05they're all based on the Shark movies.
- 40:07Y- yeah, I mean,
- 40:08Ryan: s-
- 40:08Jon: y- I'll let you keep Cocaine Bear
- 40:11Ryan: Oh, thank you.
- 40:12I appreciate
- 40:13Jon: Be- because that, 'cause that,
- 40:15Kearns: guy
- 40:15Jon: that's based on a true story
- 40:18Ryan: Well, he made choices, so he has to be benevolent, which I appreciate.
- 40:23Thank you.
- 40:24I get Ray Liotta in his last acting career, which he plays a villain.
- 40:28And I have to ask, 'cause I'm curious, think J. Courtney's character,
- 40:33Tucker, is worth the recognition to be considered a great horror
- 40:37villain for his one appearance?
- 40:40Kearns: He does a really good job, um,
- 40:42Jon: I mean
- 40:45It's a memor- it's gonna be a memorable, memorable antagonist.
- 40:50Like he is… The character itself could have just sort of been kind
- 40:55of a nothing because it, like, it could be very easily in an untalented
- 41:00actor's hands just be kind of like a character you've seen a lot.
- 41:05But there's something about the way Jay Courtney does it
- 41:08that's like, "Oh, all right.
- 41:10I'm g- this is somebody who's gonna stick with me.
- 41:13I'm gonna remember this killer."
- 41:17Ryan: His mannerisms, the facial expressions,
- 41:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:19Ryan: mentioned earlier,
- 41:20Kearns: He just crushes it
- 41:22Ryan: The dancing?
- 41:23Come on now.
- 41:24Kearns: Yeah, you know they pulled a little bit from Silence of the
- 41:26Lambs on that one, and it was fine the way they did it too.
- 41:29It was good.
- 41:30But you had to get him weird.
- 41:31You had to be-- You had to make sure that he was a sociopath,
- 41:34Jon: Yeah.
- 41:35Kearns: that did the trick.
- 41:36Jon: Yeah.
- 41:37Yeah
- 41:38Kearns: the trick
- 41:38Ryan: with, the obsession too with the VHS tapes and it has to be an old school RCA.
- 41:43Those tapes gave me
- 41:44Kearns: That's-- Those are like, um, sequence killer sort of things when
- 41:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:49Kearns: you ever watch Mindhunters, they go through all of their rituals and stuff.
- 41:53They pretty much stuck to that formula to a T in this movie.
- 41:56Jon: Yeah.
- 41:57Kearns: Like, he's got his trophies, he's got his stuff.
- 42:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:01Kearns: Dexter season seven or whatever
- 42:03Jon: Mm-hmm
- 42:05Ryan: So many layers, which, like, would you accept a prequel of Dangerous Animals?
- 42:10Kearns: No, this is fine.
- 42:12Jon: I don't,
- 42:13Kearns: wor- it's not worth it,
- 42:15Jon: I don't
- 42:15Kearns: It's a good movie, but it's not worth it
- 42:17Jon: I don't think you need to expand this universe.
- 42:19I think, I think they told a story that was really well told.
- 42:23It was pretty, it was, you know, an interesting enough story as a whole.
- 42:27I don't, I don't need anything added to it
- 42:31Ryan: Uh, not like a backstory with like Jay Courtney
- 42:34Jon: No, beca--
- 42:35Ryan: see his character build
- 42:36Jon: I mean,
- 42:37Kearns: just hopefully maybe he plays another good role
- 42:39Jon: Yeah, I'd like to see Jay Courtney again.
- 42:42I don't, I think, I, I feel like sometimes with that stuff they, they take away
- 42:47some of what made the character good.
- 42:50Like, I don't, I, I, it's the kind of character they developed
- 42:54enough I don't need to know how he became this kind of serial killer.
- 42:58Because generally it's my mommy wasn't nice to me.
- 43:01You know, it's stuff like that.
- 43:03Like, and then, and that, like that always sorta, like if you,
- 43:08like I, I mentioned earlier, I, I listen to a lot of true crime stuff.
- 43:11That always sorta takes me out of the serial killer stories
- 43:14is the, like how whiny they are
- 43:17And, and people didn't like me in school, mommy wasn't nice to me.
- 43:20Like, like stuff like that, it's like, God
- 43:29Ryan: He's breaking out.
- 43:30the Thing
- 43:31Jon: Hmm.
- 43:33Kearns: I get it though.
- 43:34And I think John's right.
- 43:35There's too much to lose and not enough to gain
- 43:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:38Kearns: expanding this
- 43:39Jon: Yeah, we, we have a good story here.
- 43:42We don't… I don't think we need more.
- 43:45All right.
- 43:47So listen, and we, we get towards the end and Zephyr
- 43:52realizes her time is running out.
- 43:54She- it's not long before Tucker's gonna make her shark food, or Moses,
- 44:00who's, you know, pretty messed up at this point and fading too.
- 44:04so how far would you go to escape?
- 44:06'Cause we know how far Zephyr is gonna go
- 44:09Would you
- 44:11Kearns: Franco yourself to get out of there?
- 44:14Ryan: that, when I saw her do what she was doing, I was like, "No,
- 44:18you're not biting your thumb off.
- 44:19No, you're… No.
- 44:20Jon: So I,
- 44:21Ryan: And then
- 44:22Jon: I, I mean it's not even… That part is sort of like, all right, well,
- 44:25I mean, you've gone that far, you might as well go the rest of the way.
- 44:30But it, uh, you know, it's, it's the, the act of taking her thumb
- 44:35and snapping it back, you know?
- 44:38Just like that
- 44:38Ryan: was
- 44:39Kearns: dude.
- 44:39Yeah, dude
- 44:40Jon: And then, a-
- 44:42Ryan: it
- 44:43Jon: and then to do that and have the cuffs not fit over it still
- 44:50Kearns: Yeah, that, it was pretty heartbreaking
- 44:52Jon: And then, I mean, uh, from, from there, like, you've already ruined your
- 44:56thumb, you might as well go the next step
- 45:00Kearns: You could… That would heal eventually.
- 45:02The chewing it
- 45:03Jon: I mean
- 45:04Kearns: next level
- 45:06Jon: I mean, it would heal, but how much would it heal?
- 45:10And like, I mean, you know you're done anyway.
- 45:13Kearns: You'd have a
- 45:14Jon: Y- y- you know you're done anyway.
- 45:17But you're gonna have a thumb that like hangs like that all the time.
- 45:20Like it's like down here while the rest of your hand is up.
- 45:23Like you wave like this now
- 45:26Kearns: For those listening, the visual is epic right now
- 45:30Jon: Yeah, like, I mean,
- 45:31Kearns: The
- 45:31Jon: like, my thumb kinda does that anyway, so.
- 45:34Kearns: say you've got kind of a thing going on
- 45:36Jon: Yeah, like I, I have the hitchhiker's thumb and all that, so.
- 45:41Ryan: I'm just
- 45:41Jon: But…
- 45:42Ryan: the thumb getting bit off now,
- 45:43Jon: Oh, yeah, but,
- 45:44Ryan: jitters
- 45:45Jon: like, for me, I, I, I feel like you guys were more disturbed
- 45:50by the chewing it off afterwards.
- 45:52Kearns: Yes,
- 45:53Jon: me,
- 45:53Kearns: so
- 45:54Jon: for me it wa- it was the, it's the first shock of just the cheese, like
- 45:59Mm-hmm.
- 46:03Kearns: in these movies, as you well know.
- 46:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:07Kearns: so this was a tough scene.
- 46:09Ryan: This was worse than bring her back.
- 46:11Kearns: No, it wasn't.
- 46:12Ryan: in my opinion.
- 46:12Oh
- 46:13Jon: I don't know about that.
- 46:14I, I mean, I don't know about that,
- 46:16Kearns: Every time you reference Bring Her Back, you're wrong,
- 46:18by the way, just so you know.
- 46:19matter what you're talking about, it's just by default you're wrong.
- 46:22Ryan: take, I'll take the table scene over that any day.
- 46:25The knife
- 46:26Kearns: Ooh.
- 46:27No way.
- 46:28Jon: No,
- 46:29Kearns: way.
- 46:30Ryan: Yes.
- 46:30Kearns: No
- 46:31Jon: I'm not, I'm not…
- 46:32Kearns: hard scene
- 46:33Jon: g- I'll, I'll get with you on a lot of bring her back stuff.
- 46:36I c- I,
- 46:38Ryan: The CGI,
- 46:39Jon: can't on this one
- 46:40Ryan: This can, this can happen, right?
- 46:43This can really happen, so you get that
- 46:45Kearns: That can happen too
- 46:47Jon: Yeah
- 46:47Ryan: denomi- a
- 46:48Kearns: if you did it.
- 46:50Ryan: demonic kid in
- 46:51Kearns: No, just a k-
- 46:52Ryan: about?
- 46:53Kearns: a, a scene of a child chewing on cutlery was brutal
- 46:58Jon: Yeah.
- 46:59Ryan: They weren't
- 47:00Jon: And it, and it, it's, it's the child aspect.
- 47:04This is, this is a f- this is a full-grown woman doing this.
- 47:08It's, so it's not… And I mean
- 47:10Kearns: She already had carnal relations, so she could die at any
- 47:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:14Kearns: That's allowed by the rules
- 47:16Jon: But they, but the thing I like, I like about that scene is that s-
- 47:21it's, it's reminiscent of the end of Saw, but it goes that step further.
- 47:27Kearns: Yeah, we're
- 47:28Jon: Like, it's not like,
- 47:29Kearns: know what?
- 47:31Jon: it, it's not like, all right, he's sawing his foot off and that's it.
- 47:34You get a good extended bit of her gnawing on herself
- 47:40Kearns: It, it takes a minute, and it reminds me of Gerald's Game,
- 47:43which is a good thing to bring up.
- 47:46Um, uh, you guys remember how she gets out of the cuffs in Gerald's Game?
- 47:52Ryan: It's been a minute.
- 47:53Kearns: He
- 47:53Ryan: I'm
- 47:54Kearns: slice – I'm trying to figure out how to word this so this episode doesn't
- 47:57get completely freaking blacklisted.
- 48:00Slices and uses the, the blood as lubricant to help slip it off.
- 48:07It's not quite as bad as it could get, which is,
- 48:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:09Kearns: you know, the, the worst case scenario, I think, is when
- 48:13you get… What's the term, Ryan?
- 48:16When you de-
- 48:19Ryan: Glove?
- 48:20Kearns: Yes.
- 48:21Ryan: Yes.
- 48:22Kearns: Would that be worse?
- 48:23Ryan: I don't know.
- 48:25De-gloving is, is horrible.
- 48:26I mean, you kinda, like, just the action of it and just … Yeah, sorry.
- 48:33I'm not really keen on this talk, 'cause I, yeah, 'cause I see it
- 48:37Kearns: You can go on YouTube right now and watch like a whole,
- 48:41a whole collection of videos on it.
- 48:43Been down that rabbit hole before.
- 48:45down that rabbit hole before, buddy.
- 48:48And they, it's mostly industrial machines and stuff.
- 48:51Ryan: Yes.
- 48:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:52Kearns: But
- 48:52Ryan: I
- 48:53Kearns: I- it is pretty brutal.
- 48:54What, what's worse, biting off the thumb or de- if she de-gloved herself?
- 48:58Ryan: Degloving.
- 48:59Cause like when you're my, my mom used to work for a company and
- 49:03they used to handle like a lot of
- 49:05Kearns: They're gonna sue us now, just so you know
- 49:08Ryan: But they'll, they'll be like, we know this guy, He'll be like, right.
- 49:12More.
- 49:12I remember him running a monk.
- 49:15Well,
- 49:15Kearns: "You, by the way, you've been served," and I'll hand you the envelope.
- 49:19Ryan: well, I was downstairs in the warehouse and I'd investigate
- 49:23the machines and stuff and I get the tour and understanding of how
- 49:27to make like, cause they used to do like the sheets for marbles.
- 49:31They put the marbles and like you get dressed behind one of those.
- 49:34I'm trying to figure out the word, like a curtain.
- 49:36What was like the fold out curtains.
- 49:38Kearns: Okay
- 49:39Ryan: But to see how the machines would work to make the
- 49:42marbles, the fire and stuff.
- 49:43If you made one mistake, it was wraps and there were, there were some accidents.
- 49:52Not when I was there, but there was, and you know, it's not a fun process.
- 49:57Kearns: Oh, those things will do it.
- 49:59Those things will do it.
- 50:00I don't know.
- 50:01It's a r- real just quick roll call.
- 50:04A, B, or C basically.
- 50:05Would you d- would you, would you able to do either of those things to escape?
- 50:13Jon: Chew your, chew your thumb off for a D glove
- 50:16Kearns: Mm-hmm
- 50:19Ryan: No, I'm gonna fight him.
- 50:21He'll come back, I'll…
- 50:23Kearns: He's gonna sh- he's hit
- 50:24Jon: But
- 50:24Kearns: and you're gonna
- 50:25Jon: yeah, I mean, you're, yeah, you- you're at a such a significant
- 50:29disadvantage if you're in those cuffs
- 50:32Kearns: He's not a small guy either.
- 50:34Jon: Yeah
- 50:35Kearns: da, da, da.
- 50:37Ryan: I'm ready, Captain
- 50:38Kearns: All right, so you're… Ryan's choosing death.
- 50:40Ryan: Yes.
- 50:43Jon: Listen, I give it the same answer I give any of these things.
- 50:46I have two thumbs, I can lose one
- 50:49Kearns: All right, so John's gonna try to get out, I honestly don't know until
- 50:53I'm there, uh, to be honest with you.
- 50:54I got a lot to live for right now, so I'd probably chew off my thumb
- 50:58Jon: I,
- 50:59Kearns: we're being real
- 51:00Jon: I just don't legitimately don't know if I actually could
- 51:06Kearns: That's the thing is stopping yourself.
- 51:07Like,
- 51:08Jon: Yeah.
- 51:08Like that would be my choice.
- 51:10I would definitely try to get out that way if there's nothing else.
- 51:15I just don't know if I could… I don't know if I could first snap it
- 51:19and then, you know, go the next step of just gnawing through my, my body part
- 51:28Kearns: Oh, dude, Brian, in "Berserk," remember when Guts has
- 51:31his arm stuck in the demon's mouth and he's trying to get to Casca to
- 51:35stop the bad thing from happening that we definitely can't talk about?
- 51:38And he, he takes the bl- he takes a broken sword and does the thing,
- 51:42and, and that's how he gets out.
- 51:45That… Well, that's Guts, though.
- 51:48Guts.
- 51:49Ryan: I can
- 51:49Kearns: Bro.
- 51:50Ryan: and be like,
- 51:50Kearns: Bro.
- 51:52Ryan: But
- 51:52Kearns: was pretty bad
- 51:54Ryan: you hear, you hear her chomping, you hear her going through the
- 51:57Kearns: Well, if they did it right,
- 51:59Ryan: that
- 51:59Kearns: you would hear that too visceral.
- 52:04Visceral
- 52:04Ryan: did, did they do that in the anime?
- 52:06Kearns: No.
- 52:07Oh no, in the gold, yeah, the golden age arc they do.
- 52:09Ryan: did,
- 52:10Kearns: Absolutely, yeah.
- 52:11They did it right.
- 52:11Ryan: Yes
- 52:12Kearns: It was well, very well done.
- 52:14yeah, anyway, um, chances are all three of us would meet our
- 52:17makers after that, I'm sure.
- 52:19Jon: I absolutely, absolutely.
- 52:21I'm also not the fighter that Zephyr is because w- that's really just the first
- 52:26step because w- free from the cuffs, it's… Here she's still in the middle of
- 52:31the ocean on a boat with a guy who is much larger, much stronger, and pretty hostile
- 52:39Kearns: this.
- 52:40Yeah, he's done this before.
- 52:41Jon: Yeah
- 52:42Kearns: And he tees her up as a fighter.
- 52:43"You're a fighter,"
- 52:45Jon: Yeah.
- 52:45Kearns: the whole movie, so we know something big's coming from her
- 52:48Jon: Yeah, you and, you and I are, are very alike, you know, that whole routine
- 52:53Kearns: We're alphas or whatever he calls them.
- 52:55Jon: Yeah.
- 52:59Ryan: Trying to turn her.
- 53:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:01Ryan: She just
- 53:01Kearns: I,
- 53:02Jon: Yep
- 53:02Kearns: waiting for him to invite her to join him, and he never did.
- 53:05He's too in love with the game, I think
- 53:07Jon: Yeah, yeah,
- 53:10Ryan: He's too focused.
- 53:11Jon: yeah.
- 53:11Yep
- 53:12Ryan: a one-man show type deal.
- 53:14But that's another thing.
- 53:15Q Minehunters is, it's always a one-man show.
- 53:18Kearns: True.
- 53:19They don't, they don't
- 53:20Jon: Yeah, I mean, the tag team serial killers are few
- 53:25Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 53:25Ryan: Yes.
- 53:26Kearns: All right
- 53:27Ryan: from screen
- 53:28Jon: Yeah.
- 53:29I mean, movies less, less rare.
- 53:33But in real life, there's not that many examples of them
- 53:38Ryan: Fair.
- 53:39Jon: So
- 53:39Ryan: on that
- 53:40Jon: we get to the end and Zephyr is attempting her escape, and
- 53:43we get to the CGI moment that you guys wanted to bring up
- 53:47Kearns: I texted it immediately.
- 53:49As soon as it happened, I texted that I-- we had to talk about this.
- 53:55What a good movie
- 53:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:57Kearns: and what a terrible… It's almost intentionally terrible what
- 54:01they do at the end with… The, the actual motion of the, of a great white
- 54:08leaping out of the water after bre- like
- 54:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 54:11Kearns: and like if it, as it grabs a seal, that's all
- 54:13like well and good, but why
- 54:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 54:15Kearns: it so bad?
- 54:17It looked te- the water loo- I re-watched it like four times.
- 54:21The water looked terrible
- 54:23Jon: Yeah, it's, it,
- 54:24Ryan: out jar
- 54:25Jon: it's really the one misstep.
- 54:27Like I saw people complain about the scene where she's underwater and face
- 54:32to face with the great white and it just sort of, it, it ignores her.
- 54:36Like
- 54:36Ryan: was
- 54:37Kearns: Well, that
- 54:37Jon: he, he…
- 54:38Kearns: with the con- eye contact.
- 54:39She
- 54:40Jon: Yeah.
- 54:40Kearns: contact,
- 54:41Jon: Yeah.
- 54:41And then, and Byrne talked about that somewhere about how it's
- 54:45like the two scarred creatures recognizing one another and, you know,
- 54:51Ryan: Like
- 54:52Jon: he,
- 54:52Kearns: I,
- 54:52Jon: he make, he makes it more, he makes it a, in his mind it's a deeper
- 54:57moment than what you maybe pick up
- 55:00Kearns: Okay.
- 55:01Yeah, a bit of a miss on his part as far as conveying that, but I dig
- 55:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:05Kearns: I dig the concept
- 55:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:08Kearns: Um, I just thought it was just the usual, when you look at a
- 55:12shark, it doesn't see you as prey.
- 55:14If you're looking at
- 55:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:15Kearns: as it's coming to you and it gives you a chance to push it off or it'll
- 55:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:20Kearns: and I've seen, you know, Shark Week.
- 55:21You've all seen Shark Week.
- 55:22It's-- They do that all the time.
- 55:24So I thought that's what that was about.
- 55:26The CGI, though, watching the fake shark swim away, like a la Jaws style way more
- 55:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:34Kearns: the way they ended it.
- 55:35That climax was horrific to the point where I was laughing
- 55:40Ryan: it was just initiated poorly.
- 55:43I feel like if they put a little more effort, a little more money into it,
- 55:46Kearns: That's the thing they needed.
- 55:47Ryan: it.
- 55:48Kearns: They needed more money.
- 55:49You could have done that with, with AI better than that looks in that scene
- 55:54Ryan: Yes.
- 55:56I feel like though, again, like John said, it's like a deeper movie, I feel.
- 56:00Like, he
- 56:01Kearns: we're not talking about any of that right now.
- 56:03We're just talking about how horrible that CGI scene was in this movie that was
- 56:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 56:09Mm-hmm
- 56:09Kearns: you get to like the, oh my God, is this the Sci-Fi Channel?
- 56:12Why did that happen?
- 56:14Jon: Well, I mean, also again, having watched, you know, Devil's Candy and
- 56:19knowing about The Loved Ones, he- I don't think Byrne has really used
- 56:25a lot of CGI in the first place.
- 56:28Like Devil's Candy is, is not an effects-laden movie
- 56:33Kearns: He should stick with that or get a better dude.
- 56:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 56:38I mean,
- 56:38Ryan: Just
- 56:38Kearns: not cutting it
- 56:39Ryan: effects
- 56:40Jon: starts with budget.
- 56:41I mean, you know, $2 million.
- 56:43$2 million doesn't go where, where, where, you know, $600,000
- 56:48went for Romero in '78, you know?
- 56:52Kearns: Fair point.
- 56:54Fair point.
- 56:54But yeah, it was a gripe.
- 56:55It's not so much a gripe as it is a bit of a stain on a pretty good picture.
- 57:00But it's
- 57:01Jon: Y- yeah,
- 57:01Kearns: point
- 57:02Jon: it, it's a moment, it's a moment that takes you out of it.
- 57:06Um, so before we go into what we think about Dangerous Animals, let's hear about
- 57:12how some other people think about, of it.
- 57:15Kearns: yeah
- 57:16Jon: so we have an 87% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a
- 57:23Kearns: Pretty good.
- 57:25That's also pretty good.
- 57:26It's about
- 57:26Jon: pretty well-liked.
- 57:27Yeah.
- 57:28I, I think, I think we'll, you know, a little bit of a spoiler when we
- 57:31do the reviews, I, I bet we're all gonna fall in that general range.
- 57:35five stars.
- 57:37"Love shark thrillers, and this is an insane twist on what we're used
- 57:42to seeing. Refreshing, terrifying, absolute must-see." Shark emoji.
- 57:50Kearns: Hmm.
- 57:51It's, I agree with, uh, why they liked it.
- 57:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 57:55Mm-hmm.
- 57:55Kearns: I don't know if I find this movie terrifying per se.
- 57:59There's, there's tension
- 58:01Jon: It,
- 58:01Ryan: Yes
- 58:02Jon: I, I, I think I found it more uncomfortable than terrifying.
- 58:07But I mean, you know,
- 58:08Ryan: baby shark
- 58:09Jon: it, it, you know, that, that part is…
- 58:12Kearns: Shark
- 58:13Jon: And, uh, and he, his rendition of Baby Shark is kinda creepy, like
- 58:18it's not, it's not like the upbeat, like it's, it's the creepy serial
- 58:24killer guy singing Baby Shark.
- 58:26Um, yeah, I mean, it, yeah, I would agree with most of that.
- 58:31The number's too high for me, but otherwise I think that's
- 58:34a pretty accurate review.
- 58:36And then we have this one.
- 58:38"One star.
- 58:40Worst horror ever.
- 58:43Guessed the ending 100%, and the whole movie is full of futile struggles
- 58:50that just make you very uncomfortable.
- 58:53Don't watch it."
- 58:55Kearns: That is a thing in this.
- 58:57There's a lot of Ls that get delivered to the, to the heroine,
- 59:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 59:05Kearns: build in the way where you're supposed to, like, despair for her or
- 59:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 59:10Kearns: constantly aware that it's building up to her getting out.
- 59:13You
- 59:14Jon: Yeah.
- 59:14Kearns: she's ever
- 59:15Jon: Yeah.
- 59:15Kearns: get out.
- 59:16Jon: Yeah, I mean… Yeah, and, you know, guessing the ending of
- 59:20this movie is like, you didn't guess the end of Citizen Kane, bud.
- 59:24You, you know, you get, you get, it's a… You know, asi- aside from Moses
- 59:29not being done at the end of the movie,
- 59:33Kearns: Which
- 59:33Jon: there's really nothing, nothing terribly twisty about it.
- 59:37The heroine is going to overcome the serial killer somehow.
- 59:43Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 59:44Jon: Most likely by have- getting a shark to eat him.
- 59:48Like, you know how that's gonna go
- 59:51Kearns: Hmm.
- 59:51Ryan: It's very straightforward
- 59:52Jon: Yeah.
- 59:53And then you have the half star.
- 59:57And I don't know what, I don't know what movie this half star person watched,
- 1:00:03but it was not Dangerous Animals.
- 1:00:06Overrated Hollywood slop
- 1:00:11Kearns: That's it?
- 1:00:12Oh,
- 1:00:12Jon: No, hold on.
- 1:00:14Progressive themes as usual with the lamest characters other
- 1:00:22than the antagonist, but the message is same old blathering
- 1:00:30Ryan: feathering
- 1:00:30Kearns: message?
- 1:00:31Jon: I, I have no i-- I have no idea.
- 1:00:34First off, this isn't a Hollywood movie.
- 1:00:37Kearns: Yeah, it's an anapene
- 1:00:38Jon: This is, this is an independent Australian production.
- 1:00:43I don't even think it's what would be the equivalent of an Australian Hollywood.
- 1:00:49This is some dude on a boat with some cameras, you know.
- 1:00:52Like, they, they… First off.
- 1:00:55Second off,
- 1:00:57if you're looking for and finding progressive or conservative themes
- 1:01:04in "Dangerous Animals," you're doing too much, 'cause it's not there.
- 1:01:10It's, like, what's prog- That the woman survives and overcomes?
- 1:01:15Like, so is "Halloween" progressive by that standpoint?
- 1:01:20Kearns: no LBGTQ aspect to it.
- 1:01:22Jon: Th- there i-
- 1:01:23Kearns: it
- 1:01:23Jon: there is nothing that these pe- that… Yeah
- 1:01:27Kearns: Is hobo guy on the docks
- 1:01:30Jon: Yeah.
- 1:01:31Like there's nothing.
- 1:01:32There's, there's,
- 1:01:34Ryan: The darkling
- 1:01:35Jon: mean, and a, a h- a hobo who wants to help.
- 1:01:38Kearns: Yeah, there
- 1:01:39Jon: His a- his actual ability to be helpful is very questionable.
- 1:01:44Ryan: Oh, yeah
- 1:01:44Jon: But
- 1:01:45Kearns: with you, man.
- 1:01:45This is dumb
- 1:01:46Jon: I, I, I, I just, I don't see any of that.
- 1:01:48I don't see what the message that's the same old blathering is.
- 1:01:53I don't… Like, to, to… Listen, you, you cannot like "Dangerous Animals."
- 1:01:59There's gonna be people who didn't like "Dangerous Animals." That's fine.
- 1:02:02I liked it a lot.
- 1:02:03It was a-- I believe it was in my top five for last year.
- 1:02:07I don't know that it stays in there now that I've seen where they were
- 1:02:11going with "28 Years Later," I think that probably knocks it out.
- 1:02:15But it's still w- within my top 10 from last year.
- 1:02:19It's… But to say it's a half star for those reasons just doesn't work for me
- 1:02:27Ryan: Rage bait.
- 1:02:28Jon: Yeah.
- 1:02:29Ryan: It's just
- 1:02:29Kearns: yeah.
- 1:02:30Ryan: bait.
- 1:02:30Kearns: I think it's a person who spends too much time
- 1:02:32Jon: Yeah
- 1:02:34Ryan: and, and people want, I feel like we get into those like A24 horror
- 1:02:40films or even like what Blumhouse tries to do, where every horror
- 1:02:44film has to have that deep meaning.
- 1:02:46It doesn't.
- 1:02:47Jon: No.
- 1:02:47Ryan: It sh- it can just be
- 1:02:48Jon: No, it,
- 1:02:48Ryan: story
- 1:02:49Jon: it's,
- 1:02:49Ryan: to watch
- 1:02:50Jon: it's fine, and that, that's what this was, and that's why I'm g- you
- 1:02:54know, I d- I'll go first with my rating.
- 1:02:57I'm gonna say Dangerous Animals is a four.
- 1:03:01Ryan: Oh,
- 1:03:01Jon: You, you c- you could, you could talk me m- e- up even a little
- 1:03:04bit to a 4.25 maybe, but a four.
- 1:03:06This is a four for me.
- 1:03:09It hits, what I wanted it to hit in a shark movie, and it hits what
- 1:03:12I wanted it to hit in a serial killer movie in the same place.
- 1:03:17So I'm, I'm cool with it
- 1:03:20Ryan: Okay.
- 1:03:21Curves
- 1:03:23Kearns: It went way higher than I thought it was gonna go.
- 1:03:25I was gonna give it a three two five because that's not a terrible score.
- 1:03:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:30Kearns: terrible score.
- 1:03:31Jon: No, it's above average
- 1:03:32Kearns: it's for the same reasons.
- 1:03:34It's, it does what it's supposed to do.
- 1:03:37It doesn't, um, I tend to gravitate and love movies that
- 1:03:40have a deeper message and stuff.
- 1:03:42The
- 1:03:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:42Kearns: this doesn't have it doesn't mean I don't think it's
- 1:03:44a great movie or a good movie.
- 1:03:46It's just that doesn't go-- It never elevates itself to another level because
- 1:03:51it, that's not what its purpose is.
- 1:03:53I enjoyed it.
- 1:03:54I would've enjoyed seeing them do a little bit more with the sharks as
- 1:03:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:58Kearns: as when they're dunking and things like that.
- 1:04:01But I don't think I would even qualify these as missed opportunities.
- 1:04:04This is just like it, it's teed up to be a line drive to left center, not a
- 1:04:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:10Kearns: and
- 1:04:10Jon: Yeah.
- 1:04:11Kearns: what it is.
- 1:04:11It's a good movie.
- 1:04:12Three two five might be too low though because then you're making me feel bad.
- 1:04:16Three five.
- 1:04:16Three
- 1:04:17Jon: We found
- 1:04:18Ryan: Okay.
- 1:04:18Kearns: I'll do three five.
- 1:04:20Ryan: I'm gonna race you, Alex, and I'm gonna go 3.75.
- 1:04:23Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:24Ryan: it, it hits everything I would expect, what I was expecting.
- 1:04:28The, uh, biting and almost de-gloving was like, what are we doing right now?
- 1:04:34And I cringed, and I haven't cringed with a horror movie in
- 1:04:38a while, and I… It was bad.
- 1:04:40I was just like, no, I can't.
- 1:04:42This is horrible." hear the crunching.
- 1:04:44But it hits every point.
- 1:04:46It was an interesting perspective to see the serial killer slasher
- 1:04:50motive now mixed with, sharks and animals, and them uniting that idea,
- 1:04:57as we were talking about earlier, and making it more to the foreground.
- 1:05:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:01Ryan: nice change, they still follow the same beats that we're all used
- 1:05:05to, and that's what makes it work.
- 1:05:07It's a fun film, and it's people thinking about messages and deeper
- 1:05:11meanings, what the director wants to do.
- 1:05:13Just go sit down and watch it with a bowl of popcorn and enjoy it
- 1:05:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:18Yeah.
- 1:05:19This is a, a fun hour and a half popcorn movie
- 1:05:22Ryan: Yes.
- 1:05:24People need to understand, get a bowl of popcorn and enjoy movies,
- 1:05:28just like our top fives that we're going to be discussing tonight.
- 1:05:32And I'm gonna start off.
- 1:05:34My top five, I was talking to John about this earlier, and we were trying to figure
- 1:05:37it out, but I'm going with five benevolent characters who are truly malevolent.
- 1:05:45Kearns: No wonder he said them.
- 1:05:46No wonder he said it seven times tonight.
- 1:05:49He's been waiting
- 1:05:50Ryan: foreshadowing.
- 1:05:51And I'm gonna start off, uh, John, uh, a couple weeks ago you mentioned a film
- 1:05:58you haven't seen and it's on your list, and done it in a while 'cause I've been
- 1:06:02staying away from films I haven't seen.
- 1:06:04But this one I do wanna mention, and it's my top five, uh, number five,
- 1:06:08I'm sorry, and that's, uh, Heretic.
- 1:06:11has been on, uh, my list for a while.
- 1:06:13It's about two young Mormon missionaries who visit the home of an eccentric man,
- 1:06:18played by Hugh Grant, after he expresses interest in the Church of Jesus Christ
- 1:06:21of Latter-day Saints, only for his true intentions to quickly become clear.
- 1:06:26Um, just how the trailer depicts him, he's very benevolent, and then as the
- 1:06:30trailer continues, you see him turn.
- 1:06:32I've heard a lot of great things about it.
- 1:06:34I've heard Hugh Grant is amazing.
- 1:06:37Uh, very… I was hesitant with the film because I kept thinking about
- 1:06:41Martyrs, and I was like, "How far are we gonna go with, like, torture,
- 1:06:45blood?" And it's not about that.
- 1:06:47It's more psychological
- 1:06:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:49Ryan: I've read.
- 1:06:50Kearns: It's really good.
- 1:06:52Ryan: You've seen it?
- 1:06:53Kearns: Yes, it's really good, and it is more psychological
- 1:06:57Ryan: I feel like he, I mean, you can agree with me from what I, or
- 1:07:00disagree, is that I feel like he is benevolent in the beginning.
- 1:07:03He's very welcoming.
- 1:07:04I f- you know, he gives tea.
- 1:07:06He's very, like,
- 1:07:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:07Ryan: intrigued, but there's more to the sinister plot as it comes
- 1:07:11out, if I'm not mistaken, right?
- 1:07:13Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:14He's, uh, you know, I mean, I don't wanna ruin the ending for you, so
- 1:07:17I'm not gonna tell you what, what his whole motive is and stuff, but
- 1:07:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:21Kearns: cool.
- 1:07:21It's,
- 1:07:22Jon: But
- 1:07:22Kearns: what his angle is is cool
- 1:07:24Jon: y- yeah, and it, and it's Hugh Grant, so he automatically looks safe
- 1:07:30Ryan: Yes.
- 1:07:32Well, Hugh Grant now.
- 1:07:34Hugh Grant from Bridget Jones' Diary I think is a different story
- 1:07:37Jon: I mean, he,
- 1:07:38Kearns: He's
- 1:07:38Jon: he, he, but
- 1:07:39Kearns: like a s- the guy you wouldn't mind running into in an
- 1:07:41Jon: Yeah.
- 1:07:42Kearns: You
- 1:07:42Jon: It, it, it, it's the, it's, uh, for Hugh Grant, it's always
- 1:07:47been more the personality of the characters than the look.
- 1:07:51Like, he's always, the personality has always been, like, the cad, you know?
- 1:07:57Uh, but he, uh, he always looks like he's a safe guy
- 1:08:01Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:08:02Ryan: Fair.
- 1:08:03Kearns: All right.
- 1:08:04Jon: Next
- 1:08:05Ryan: that connects to my number four.
- 1:08:07It's about, uh, two strangers meet on a train, uh, one of whom is a psychopath
- 1:08:13who suggests they exchange murders so that neither will be caught, and
- 1:08:18that is 1951's Strangers On A Train.
- 1:08:22It's A lot of people consider it a psychological thriller.
- 1:08:25I consider it more of a horror and psychological, something … or
- 1:08:29very early for Alfred Hitchcock.
- 1:08:31Uh, it's just good.
- 1:08:33You get two strangers who meet, uh, Guy Haines and Bruno, and when Bruno and
- 1:08:40Guy meet, Bruno's very benevolent, and he comes up with the idea, and Guy's
- 1:08:45like, "Oh, it's just a joke." then Bruno kills his wife, and Guy's like, "No,
- 1:08:49this is, this is not a joke." how he acts, it's very friendly, and then as the
- 1:08:54movie continues, you see the cord snap.
- 1:08:57You see the madness in Bruno grow, he becomes insane, and
- 1:09:02it's just such a good build.
- 1:09:04you've never seen it, such a good film.
- 1:09:06Strangers On A Train, 1951.
- 1:09:08Get through the black and white.
- 1:09:10And that leads to number three.
- 1:09:12really more of an anthology, and we're going with Trick 'r Treat, and you gotta
- 1:09:15ask, who's benevolent in the movie?
- 1:09:17Who's malevolent?
- 1:09:18And no, it's not the teacher.
- 1:09:21It's not him.
- 1:09:21It's Sam.
- 1:09:23Sam is a very benevolent character throughout the whole movie.
- 1:09:27He's the mascot.
- 1:09:27He's great.
- 1:09:29The only time he's malevolent is when you take down the
- 1:09:32decorations before Halloween ends.
- 1:09:34don't do that.
- 1:09:35Don't disgrace Halloween.
- 1:09:36Don't throw pumpkins on the ground, and you'll be fine.
- 1:09:40This is the one character I can say out of this whole list that I, I, I really truly
- 1:09:43love and respect in that whole situation.
- 1:09:46Don't mess with him.
- 1:09:48Sam's a great character, too, which leads to number two.
- 1:09:52I mentioned it earlier, and that's Wolf Creek.
- 1:09:55Um, three backpackers who find themselves taken captive and subsequently
- 1:09:59hunted by Mick Taylor, a serial killer in the Australian outback.
- 1:10:03Again, watching Dangerous Animals, I kept thinking of Wolf Creek.
- 1:10:07The benevolent of Tucker in the beginning, I kept thinking of Mick
- 1:10:10Taylor that's how he was in Wolf Creek.
- 1:10:14You know, "You guys are lost. I'm gonna take you to my compound. I'll fix your
- 1:10:17car," and then all hell breaks loose.
- 1:10:19And it's like Tucker, who's like, "Yeah, come on my boat. It's a tourist boat.
- 1:10:23I get good reviews." And then Greg gets You know, thrown off, and then
- 1:10:30Heather is just, like, captive, and it's similar in that Wolf Creek version.
- 1:10:34But Wolf Creek had many sequels and shows, while we're not
- 1:10:38gonna get that with Dangerous
- 1:10:39Jon: And
- 1:10:39Ryan: thank God
- 1:10:40Jon: I believe Wolf Creek is based on a true story
- 1:10:44Ryan: Yes, it is.
- 1:10:45Um,
- 1:10:45Kearns: Yes
- 1:10:46Ryan: 2001 and in the 1990s.
- 1:10:50The one in the, the 1990s was Ivan Milat, and then in 2001 it was Bradley Murdoch.
- 1:10:58I think they… I don't know if they caught, think they caught them,
- 1:11:04Jon: I believe they did.
- 1:11:05I believe they did
- 1:11:05Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:11:06But it was like, I s- feel the two at the time, you get 2005, you get Wolf
- 1:11:10Creek, and also at the time you get Texas Chainsaw Massacre the remake.
- 1:11:14So, like, the idea of, like, not found f- like, I, you can say found footage, but,
- 1:11:20like, more of, like, what was happening in the past, like the true story was becoming
- 1:11:24more in the open, and that definitely connects with my number one because,
- 1:11:29I mean, the most benevolent character you can have who turns benevolent is
- 1:11:34Norman Bates, and we're going Psycho.
- 1:11:36Two Alfred Hitchcock films in one night.
- 1:11:38Let's go.
- 1:11:40Psycho focuses on the encounter between on-the-run embezzler Marion
- 1:11:44Crane and shy motel proprietor Norman Bates and his disturbed mother.
- 1:11:50As a private investigator, um, lover Sam Loomis and her sister
- 1:11:54Lila investigate her disappearance.
- 1:11:57As we all know, shower, ketchup, all that good stuff.
- 1:12:01Norman's just, I feel like he's so misunderstanding.
- 1:12:04Jon: a good boy.
- 1:12:06Ryan: He is a good
- 1:12:07Kearns: A good boy.
- 1:12:08Ryan: my top five.
- 1:12:09Jon: He's
- 1:12:09Ryan: That is my… Now, watch the movie too, Good Boy, and our podcast episode
- 1:12:17Kearns: Do it
- 1:12:17Jon: All right
- 1:12:18Ryan: drop anywhere
- 1:12:20Jon: So I went a different way, not necessarily an
- 1:12:23unpredictable way with mine.
- 1:12:25I went with top five or five other Australian horror movies.
- 1:12:32Kearns: Nice
- 1:12:33Jon: I'm gonna start with an honorable mention just because it hasn't come
- 1:12:36up enough tonight, um, with Talk to Me, and mainly I'm throwing Talk to
- 1:12:42Me in as an honorable mention so that I can say that it's made by the same
- 1:12:46fine folks who made Bring Her Back
- 1:12:49Kearns: Yay.
- 1:12:50Ryan: yeah.
- 1:12:51Wait, uh,
- 1:12:52Kearns: Is it A24?
- 1:12:54Jon: Um, I don't believe so.
- 1:12:56Kearns: All right, then I'll watch it.
- 1:12:59I'm,
- 1:12:59Jon: Talk To Me's okay.
- 1:13:00Like, Talk To Me's okay
- 1:13:02Kearns: is more on my list than A24 is
- 1:13:05Ryan: The one with the hand, right?
- 1:13:06Jon: Yeah,
- 1:13:06Ryan: the
- 1:13:07Jon: yeah,
- 1:13:07Ryan: and then
- 1:13:07Jon: yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:08It's fine.
- 1:13:09It's fine.
- 1:13:10Um, so my number five, start the list proper, is a movie called Body Melt.
- 1:13:16Ryan: Bye.
- 1:13:17Jon: Yeah.
- 1:13:18Kearns: milk
- 1:13:19Jon: It's exactly what it sounds like.
- 1:13:20Um, so this has a, a really nice Vinegar Syndrome release,
- 1:13:26which I think is out of print.
- 1:13:28I couldn't find it on their site anymore.
- 1:13:31Um, and it… Judging by eBay prices, it's probably out of print.
- 1:13:35Um, the people of Pebbles Court are being used as test subjects for a new body drug.
- 1:13:43The problem is they don't know.
- 1:13:46Even bigger problem is the drug causes rapid body decomposition and the skin
- 1:13:52melting off, and, you know, death
- 1:13:57Ryan: I'm looking at the
- 1:13:58Kearns: There you go
- 1:13:58Ryan: DVD cover.
- 1:14:00It looks awesome.
- 1:14:01Jon: So this i- this sort of… It sort of belongs in a category that people
- 1:14:06tend to call body melt or just melt.
- 1:14:11So yeah,
- 1:14:11Kearns: Bleh
- 1:14:13Jon: there, there's a few.
- 1:14:14"Street Trash" probably belongs in that category.
- 1:14:17There's, there's a few, you know, the people melting category.
- 1:14:21Um, my number four probably gonna be the best-known one on the list.
- 1:14:26Uh, it's "The Babadook."
- 1:14:29Kearns: Aviduke
- 1:14:30Jon: yeah, written and directed by Jennifer Kent.
- 1:14:33a mother and her child descend into paranoia when the creepy Mr.
- 1:14:37Babadook, the character from a kid's book, manifests into the real world.
- 1:14:42It's a stark look at, grieving and, you know, how a family handles
- 1:14:46that, and it's become an iconic movie in the LGBTQ community.
- 1:14:53And, uh, I mean, it, for me it, four is the right spot on any list for it.
- 1:14:57It doesn't quite connect with me, but it's really well done, my number three
- 1:15:02is a movie that stars Martin Freeman.
- 1:15:05Kearns: Hmm.
- 1:15:06Jon: Not Morgan, Martin.
- 1:15:07It's a movie called Cargo.
- 1:15:10Uh, it's a, a zombie apocalypse movie.
- 1:15:13Um, after being bitten by his zombie wife, Andy must travel the countryside
- 1:15:19in the hopes of finding someone to take care of his daughter before
- 1:15:24he turns and makes a meal of her
- 1:15:27Ryan: I wanna see that so badly.
- 1:15:29Jon: It's pretty good.
- 1:15:29It's… Yeah
- 1:15:32Ryan: very like, um, heart-wrenching, I feel
- 1:15:35Jon: It's got a lot of that, yeah.
- 1:15:38Yeah, it's, it's, it's not an easy watch, but it's, it's really good.
- 1:15:42Uh, my number two, we're gonna go sort of into the vein of dangerous animals.
- 1:15:48We're also gonna go back to the director of Wolf Creek and
- 1:15:51The Belko Experiment, uh, Greg McLean, and we're going with Rogue
- 1:15:59an American journalist goes on a river tour on a crocodile-infested
- 1:16:03river in northern Australia.
- 1:16:05after the first day of the tour is pretty uneventful, the tourists encourage and
- 1:16:10push the guide, Kate, who's played by Radha Mitchell, who was, previously
- 1:16:15talked about in our Silent Hill episode.
- 1:16:17she's persuaded to go further, and they run afoul of a 25-foot
- 1:16:22crocodile with a large appetite
- 1:16:26Kearns: Do it.
- 1:16:28Ryan: Yeah
- 1:16:28Kearns: Salties
- 1:16:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:32And my number one is one I had almost forgotten about until
- 1:16:35I started making this list.
- 1:16:36It's directed by Cameron and Colin Cairnes, who went on to do Late Night
- 1:16:41With the Devil, but this is earlier.
- 1:16:44It is 100 Bloody Acres.
- 1:16:48Kearns: Cool
- 1:16:49Jon: Uh, so two brothers own an organic fertilizer company
- 1:16:53with a secret ingredient.
- 1:16:56They use the bodies of car crash victims.
- 1:17:00Uh, when the supply starts to dry up, the brothers need to come up with a
- 1:17:04new plan for a supply, and their new plan is, is much more hands-on than
- 1:17:10acquiring some people who died on the road
- 1:17:15Ryan: Interesting
- 1:17:16Kearns: All right
- 1:17:18Jon: you guys.
- 1:17:19Kearns: Hooray.
- 1:17:21And where can people see those movies that you listed out?
- 1:17:25Jon: Oh, boy.
- 1:17:25Um
- 1:17:27Kearns: Australia.
- 1:17:28Jon: I think, I, I think most of them are floating around in f- I
- 1:17:32know, um, I have physical releases of Rogue, The Babadook, and Body Melt.
- 1:17:39They've all had physical releases.
- 1:17:42Um, I'm not… Cargo I think was on Netflix for a long time,
- 1:17:46Ryan: Yep.
- 1:17:46Kearns: Okay
- 1:17:47Ryan: It's,
- 1:17:47Jon: and
- 1:17:48Ryan: still on it
- 1:17:49Jon: I'm not sure where you can see 100 Bloody Acres at this point.
- 1:17:52It was, I believe it was on Shudder at one point
- 1:17:58Kearns: Okay, cool.
- 1:18:00right, guys.
- 1:18:00Well, that was a good episode on a good movie, Men Animals
- 1:18:06Ryan: Manimals?
- 1:18:07Kearns: Manimals
- 1:18:08Jon: animals.
- 1:18:08Yeah, I mean, it kinda works.
- 1:18:10Kearns: It's
- 1:18:11Jon: It kinda works, yeah
- 1:18:12Kearns: Bad guy's the man.
- 1:18:13Get it?
- 1:18:14Ryan: Dun, dun,
- 1:18:15Kearns: The
- 1:18:15Jon: I get it.
- 1:18:16Kearns: guys.
- 1:18:16Jon: Yeah.
- 1:18:17Kearns: Hooray.
- 1:18:18All
- 1:18:18Jon: Yeah
- 1:18:19Kearns: Well, I hope you enjoyed listening to us talk about it,
- 1:18:21and we'll see you next week
- 1:18:24Ryan: Have a good one
- 1:18:26Jon: The year
