- 2:20of George Valentine. Dear mister Valentine, I'm worried about my aunt. Perhaps
- 2:32you knowah is is John Breckenridge of River Pock Drive. She's under the influence
- 2:37of a man whom I consider dangerous. He's known as Calm with the Mystic.
- 2:42May I call to discuss my problem. I cannot give you the full
- 2:46detail who asked for an a letter? So will you please see me?
- 2:49I will telephone later for an apartment. Very sincerely, yours, Riada Morton,
- 2:53Calm of the Mystics. Morton called really this morning and I made an
- 2:55appartment for ten o'clock. These a Mystic's interest me when I was a boy.
- 3:00I ever missed him Like the young lady seems to be ahead of time.
- 3:04Yeah, come in, it's Valentine. Yeah. I want you to
- 3:07leave my cousin alone. I'll not take it easy, buster r. I
- 3:09don't know you, and I don't know your cousins. Don't guide to me.
- 3:12Valentine. I heard her making an appointment with you attend this morning?
- 3:15Oh is your cousin Rita Morton? Yes, I'm Fat Breckinridge. Any relation
- 3:19to missus John Breckenridge. She's my aunt. My cousin readn't want to see
- 3:23you about her? Well, if you're interested, why don't you stick around
- 3:25and find out? Listen, Valentine, whatever she's offering you, I'll give
- 3:30you a trouble to keep out of this. I guess that must be Miss
- 3:31Morton. Look, I don't want to know. I've been here. That
- 3:35other door lead back to the hall, No, to my private office.
- 3:38The officer has a door to the hall, looks fat miss. I'll use
- 3:40it. I'll hold one. Are you gonna tell her about it? Let's
- 3:46see what she wants? First? Come in, Valentine. That's right,
- 3:51I'm George Valentine, Miss Morton, Yes, you know I had an appointment
- 3:53at ten. If you're busy, all right? This is my assistant in
- 3:58the right arm. Miss Brooks. How do you do aren't you? Yeah?
- 4:00Let us said that you were worried about your aunt. Yes, mister
- 4:03Valentine, do you know her? Only? Her reputation a very wealthy woman.
- 4:08I believe, very and very eccentric. Hy she won't make a move
- 4:12until she consults her husband. Oh no, I call that sensible. Her
- 4:15husband's been dead for five years. Oh, I see, and that makes
- 4:19her easy pray for her fortune tellers and mystics like this. Oh what's his
- 4:24name? Callama? I suppose he pretends to get messages from the late mister
- 4:28Breckenridge. Yes, and she believes them. Or she never makes a move
- 4:31without his advice. Oh what sort of advice? Oh? Everything, investments,
- 4:34doctors. Now it's a will? You mean mistake? Who's telling her
- 4:39what to do with your money? Mismis Brooks. It isn't that I want
- 4:42her to name me and a will. I haven't known a long enough.
- 4:46What do you mean by that? Well, I've only been living with her
- 4:47for a few months. I was working in an orphanage in the state of
- 4:50Massachusetts. I've been left there when my mother died. Mother was Anne and
- 4:56a sister. And well, when Anne Emma heard where I was, she
- 4:59sent for me. I love my aunt very much. I don't want to
- 5:02see you cheated naturally, But what do you think I can do? Missus
- 5:06Brackenridge must to have a lawyer. She has, John Chadwick. He said,
- 5:11he refused to make out any will the Kalma might suggest. Even Martha's
- 5:15talked with Aunt Emma, Martha another relative. Martha's in my aunt's companion ever
- 5:19since her husband died. Oh, we've all talked to a Martha Fad and
- 5:25my cousin. That that is, we call each other cousins. He's actually
- 5:30Uncle John's nephew. Well, i'm at Emma's nick. I see related only
- 5:33by Merrit's. Yes, that's right. We've all begged that Emma not to
- 5:38listen to Kalma. We told her that it is impossible that he can speak
- 5:41with Uncle John, but she just won't listen to us. Well, now,
- 5:45if she won't listen to her relatives, her companion, or her lawyer,
- 5:48what makes you think she'd listen to a stranger like me. Well,
- 5:51I thought perhaps that you could show her what a fake Kalma is. I
- 5:56can't just barge in on the good lady and say, there's Kalma. You
- 5:59think I want you as a charlatan. Well, tonight, Calm's holding a
- 6:01seance at my aunt's. I can arrange for you to be there. I've
- 6:05never been to a seance, and Emma told us that tonight Camel will prove
- 6:09beyond the shadow of a doubt that he's in communication with Uncle John. Oh,
- 6:13brother, I'd love to seek at Emma told me that I might bring
- 6:15a friend of mine to the seance. I want you to be there.
- 6:19Then you'll be able to judge for yourself if he's cheating her. Oh,
- 6:23I can tell you right now he's cheating her. But Brooklyn and I'd love
- 6:26to be president and see how it doesn't. Oh, thank you, mister
- 6:28Valentine. I'll expect you both about eight at Emmatty's and my friends, mister
- 6:44Valentine and miss Brooks. How'd you do? I trust you are not scoffor.
- 6:47Oh, we promised to behave ourselves, Missus Bregan Ridge colas seekers rather
- 6:50than scoffers. Missus Breckinridge. Oh, and this is my cousin Dad,
- 6:55how do you do? And this is missus Hadley Martha. Well, thank
- 6:58goodness you're hearing to Valentine. We need people with fans. What are we
- 7:01to expect manifestations apparitions? Well, if so, I want to sit close.
- 7:06I'm rather nearsighted. Nothing like that. Calman heels me that they used
- 7:11to ask the spirit to appear, but never anymore. Now he hears voices.
- 7:15I suppose he's willing to make an entrance. Colman's in the silence alone
- 7:18with his soul, same old stuff, broxy Whyn't you think they try something?
- 7:24Who's coming? Good evening? My friends? Are we all here?
- 7:29Yes? Calm, this is my niche week. Please, I would rather
- 7:32you did not introduce anyone to me. I would prefer to think of you
- 7:38all as I think of myself, a medium through whom the spirits may communicate.
- 7:43Would you like me to turn out the lights, Professor? That would
- 7:46be unnecessary, sir. Darkness is essential only to the uninitiated. Will you
- 7:51all be seated any special place, oh, wherever you will? Missus Bragley,
- 7:58well take this chair, i'd mean, mister Valentine and miss Brooks on
- 8:01the other side of your her and reach you and Fanti, Christopher and Martha
- 8:07over there in the big chair. My friends, there are seven of us,
- 8:09and the number seven is very helpful to the proper atmospheres. Approach and
- 8:15please keep quiet. I must ask you to be as quiet as you can,
- 8:18and to concentrate. I am very conscious of distracting sounds. Now,
- 8:24Missus Brekenridge, will you tell your friends what you have asked me to do?
- 8:28As a supreme test, I have asked Kalma to tell me what my
- 8:31husband wrote to me on our tenth anniversary. Pardon you mean you would like
- 8:37your husband to tell me what you wrote? Brother? There is a disturbing
- 8:43influence here. I'm sorry I've brought me to come. No, no,
- 8:45no, dear lady, it is not you. I guess I'm the one
- 8:48the professor means. Can't you do your little act while I'm here? Mister
- 8:50Valentine, please, Missa, who is this friend of your life? I
- 8:54can answer that, Missus Breckenridge. Mister Valentine is a private detective, and
- 8:58they believer in the occult. He would be happy to see me fail.
- 9:03I don't get me wrong, Valentine. If this is true, I must
- 9:05ask you to leave. Oh, dear lady, No, that would be
- 9:09playing into his hands. That would brand me as a charlotte and a trickster.
- 9:13If I cannot give you the answer you seek with mister Valentine here,
- 9:18the proof would be worthless. YO might assure yourself bastin. Mister Valentine,
- 9:22if Karma can do what I ask, I'm sure that even you would have
- 9:24to admit that he's able to communicate with those beyonds For me a reading about
- 9:28message, it is more than that. At tent anniversary, just a month
- 9:33before he let me, my husband wrote me a message. No one ever
- 9:37saw it but John and me. There's been an ours tape, little one
- 9:41in my bedroom wall. But I keep all my valuable and I believe you
- 9:46said, dear lady, that only you know the combination of this safe.
- 9:48That is true, mister Valentine. If Karma can tell me what is written
- 9:54in the message, won't you be satisfied? Possibly not, Missus Beckinridge,
- 9:58but I'd be impressed, because if the test is as rigid as you've hadlined,
- 10:03I don't think it can be done. Oh, the gentleman's dots will
- 10:07make success. All the sweets go ahead, us to go ahead. It's
- 10:11your show. I dislike the words show, mister Valentine. Rather let us
- 10:13say tests. Missus Breckenridge, you have asked me what your husband wrote to
- 10:20you. I hope he will tell me. Now, my friends, I
- 10:24do not ask you to believe me. I only request that you will favor
- 10:26me with quiet. I wish to be allowed to listen to the voice to
- 10:31beyond, which cannot be heard over the din of the present, of the
- 10:35new slicing, and the obal come out. He asked for quiet. The
- 10:41silence surrounds me. The voices of the mortal world are fading. John Breckenridge,
- 10:50if you can here, speak to me, tell me the words that
- 10:54we are anxious to hear. Tell me what you wrote. Help me convince
- 11:01these kind people that the riddle of the universe is not unanswerable. Wait,
- 11:11I hear you faintly come near at John Breckenridge. Yes, yes, it
- 11:22is written in verse. There are four lines. The first letters that begin
- 11:28each line spell out something the name Emma, John E, M, M,
- 11:35A E each happy year that you have been my wife, M,
- 11:41my dearest love. You have been the world to me. M. May
- 11:45we have many days in this short life A and stay together in the world
- 11:50to be voice fades, the mortal world returns. Did I say in you're
- 12:01sure dead? Brother, show my husban quick, get some water, missus
- 12:05Mark and registinated in just a moment, will return to tonight's adventure of George
- 12:22Valentine. Right now, let's talk a minute about gasoline. When you come
- 12:28right down to it, there's really only one selling point for gasoline, and
- 12:31that's performance. All gas looks much the same. The one big difference is
- 12:35the way it performs in your car. That's why it's so important for you
- 12:39to know this fact. Any gasoline can be made to stress a single performance
- 12:45feature, but Chevin Supreme gives you all eight high performance qualities in correct balance,
- 12:52quick starting, fast warm up at a knock, vaporlock prevention area,
- 12:56blending, smooth acceleration, economy, and full power. They're all yours in
- 13:03every gallon of Chevern Supreme. So if habit has you buying a one featured
- 13:07gas, that's robbing you of real driving pleasure. Better switch over now to
- 13:11the gas with all eight Chevron Supreme. Remember, the one big difference in
- 13:16gasoline is the way it performs in your car, and Chevern Supreme has all
- 13:20eight high performance qualities. Drive in soon and fill her up with Chevern Supreme
- 13:26gasoline. At any standard station or independent Chevron gas station where they say,
- 13:31aunt, mime, we take better care of your car. You are asked
- 13:46to attend a seance by Rita Martin, niece of the wealthy missus John Breckenridge.
- 13:52Rita tells you that her aunt is under the influence of a mystic who
- 13:54calls himself Comma and wants you to investigate the miss Dick presents a seemingly impossible
- 14:01manifestation, but if your name is George Valentine, you aren't satisfied. So
- 14:05next day you decide to call at the breakfon Ridge home. Hello, right,
- 14:11mister Valentine, Missus Brooks come in, please? Thank you? Have
- 14:16you found out anything? No, I'm afraid not. We haven't very much
- 14:18information, you know. Would you mind if i'd ask you a few questions?
- 14:22Oh? No, of course not come in the library. I suppose
- 14:26you'd like to talk to my aunt. Yes, your aunt, Sad and
- 14:30mother. Well they're all out now I'm the only one here but still down.
- 14:33Won't you? Thank you? Tell me? Rita? Could I understand
- 14:37you to say that Missus Hadley found you in an orphanage in Salem, Massachusetts,
- 14:41the Peabody Orphanage. Yes, that's right. Have you any idea how
- 14:46she found you there? I'm afraid you'll have to ask her that yourself.
- 14:50Ask me. Well, my I didn't here come in you're a name in
- 14:54Missus Brooks, and mister Valentine, I didn't see who it was without my
- 14:58glasses. Mister val Time was asking me some questions about how you found me
- 15:01at the aphaning, Yes, that's right, Missus Hadley. How did you
- 15:05know Rita was there? Well, I'd always known where she was. Mother
- 15:09was a friend of my mother's. Why it's no secret, mister Valentine.
- 15:11I'd known Rita's mother for a good many years. The sisters became as strange
- 15:16when Marguerite married against her family's wishes. Mother married an actor. She wanted
- 15:22to go on the stage, And now I don't think that would interest mister
- 15:24Valentine. On the contrary, everything about Rita interest me. Missus Hadley.
- 15:28How did you persuade Missus Breckenridge to invite Rida here? Well, I didn't
- 15:31have anything to do with it. Missus Breckenridge was always having her fortune until
- 15:35going to mediums and paraboyants. Someone told her she'd be unlucky if she didn't
- 15:39do something for her sister's child, And you told her you knew where Rita
- 15:43was. That's right. Do you remember who the medium was, who advised
- 15:48Missus Breckenridge. Well, there were so many of them. I don't recall.
- 15:50You said you were a friend of Rita's mother. How did you and
- 15:54Missus Breckenridge me? Well, when Rita's mother died, I brought Missus Breckenridge
- 15:58some of her sister's things. We saw quite a bit of each other,
- 16:00and we struck up a friendship. And one more question, what type of
- 16:03acting did Reader's mother do? Well she was in Vodeville, Mister Valentine,
- 16:08I found some more programs in the library and Emmett kept them. Mother was
- 16:12in an act called Raja and Reader I was named after mother. You know
- 16:17who kind of an act was it? I don't know the program, just
- 16:21said, Roger and Reader, have you the program handy? Yes, he
- 16:23has it in the scrapbook eight in one of the Destroyers. I'll get it.
- 16:26Good, good, thank you. But what difference does it make what
- 16:29Reader's mother did? Or just interesting to know our background? That's all I
- 16:33look at the other day. Oh, thanks Roger and Reader, Tom dorri
- 16:38Eva, what was the act Missus Haley, do you remember why? I
- 16:44think it was a juggling or a tumbling act. You can see they came
- 16:48on next to closing. Yes, that's right, interesting Bill Harrison's dogs.
- 16:55Sure shot Maddie, Victor and Clark a great Friandini. And see what difference
- 17:00it makes that Rita's mother was a performer? Were you ever on the stage?
- 17:03Missus hand? Oh? Heaven? No? Whatever makes you ask that?
- 17:06Well, I'm just curious, that's all. Well, if you ladies
- 17:11can't give me any more information, will we'll get going. If I find
- 17:15not anything about Calma, I'll let you know. Thank you. Certainly is
- 17:19a beautiful place you have here. It was a wonderful old tree. Missus
- 17:23breckon Bridge is very proud of her ground. I should think you'd get lonely
- 17:26way out here in the woods. How far away are your nearest neighbors?
- 17:32About a mile? I'd say? Well? Goodbye again? By George,
- 17:37what were you trying to find out? You heard my questions? I heard
- 17:41them, but sometimes I don't understand why you're asking? Well you tour here
- 17:45again? Oh? Hello? Said read them on? Need you any more,
- 17:48Valentine? So will business is settled? Calma talked to my aunt this
- 17:52morning and advised him not to change her present will, and I'll bet that
- 17:55leaves everything to you in our clients interest. Could we know the terms of
- 18:00the will? I see no how I'm in telling you this house and money
- 18:04were my uncles. So outside of a few small legacies, I get fault
- 18:08of your state. But you needn't worry about Reader. If anything happens to
- 18:14me, she'll get everything. If nothing happens to me, we'll share it
- 18:18anyway you seem Valentine. I love Reader. I want to marry her.
- 18:25If she'll have me, it won't make any difference who gets the money.
- 18:32I'll get an end nor time Rucksy'll drive me. Let me help you.
- 18:34No one has a right to hunt. Please get me. There is hospital
- 18:49A fine thanks during me after death. If you weren't hurt wanting to fall
- 18:52down, You don't think I wanted them to keep shooting everything that you've been
- 18:56killed? Oh I I'm sorry, Angel I thought whoever did it? It
- 19:00feel more secure if they thought they winked? What do you think it could
- 19:04have been Martin Reader herself. He'd a want had time to get out of
- 19:08the back door and hide among the trees while we was someone from outside.
- 19:12I don't know, Maybe it wasn't said. Well, if it was,
- 19:15I'll bet it was open season for either that or me. But why?
- 19:19Maybe someone thinks I'm asking too many questions. I look, Brooks see.
- 19:23I have a call to making an old friend of mine who runs the theatrical
- 19:26agency downtown. While I'm there, would you send a wine to the Peabody
- 19:30Orphanage at Salem, Massachusetts? Ask him to let you know all about read'em
- 19:33or how she came there when she left? Everything pop? Well, I
- 19:47thought, at Jorge Valentine, long time, nour sy, what brings you
- 19:51here now? Flora? You know more about Vaudeville than anyone I know.
- 19:53I need joy help you want to buy some good acts? I got him
- 19:56by the desk. They tell me, did you ever hear of a juggling
- 19:59a called Raja and rita? Jager and reader was a mind reading act.
- 20:03I knew all the mind reading acts. Honey, dozen Zigs, the Phase,
- 20:07the Great Tremation. I played with him many times. They were headliners.
- 20:12Used to share the building with a great fran Deny, Oh yes,
- 20:15I remember that name. Well? What did he do? But he was
- 20:17an escape artist? But he worked for the rajer on the side. I
- 20:19don't understand. He was under stage. Man Rita sat on the stage dressed
- 20:23and Ori under clothes. Rajer went through the audience, got the folks to
- 20:27write their questions. Then he'd pretend to burn him in a big fish bowls.
- 20:32Actually, he'd passed him the Pearly Gates under the stage. That was
- 20:34a great fran Deni's real name, Pearly Gates. Peary'd read the Questionsctor.
- 20:40He looked through the earphone. She warphone. Yeah that's right, honey.
- 20:42She had him under a turban. Oh boy, did they amaze the yokls?
- 20:45Yeah, it sounds like a good neck. Did I engage them?
- 20:48No, I'm afraid not. George. You reader's dead. I was on
- 20:52the same bill with him when it happened. Oh, I'll never forget it.
- 20:55I took eight bows that night. I could hoof in those days,
- 20:57honey, ask girl reader. Sheean Rodya had a little baby two years old
- 21:03old. Rodgers took on awful, had to put the baby in home.
- 21:07I don't know he's got another partner. Girl. He used to be a
- 21:11sharp shooter, not an any Oakley, but good till her eyes went bad.
- 21:15Nope, she wasn't a performer. Reader was so the act folded and
- 21:19Perry was the only one who went on, Pully, you mean the great
- 21:22Friendini. Yeah. Yeah, Perry was a good performer, and he's own
- 21:26right. He'd only helped rod Guy out because they were such good friends.
- 21:30Oh, Purley wasn't no Houdini, of course, but he certainly could get
- 21:33out of handcuffs, note laps. Why sometimes he'd pick pockets, no audience.
- 21:37He never took money, of course, but he'd read people's cards and
- 21:41licenses and note books and paths on the information to Reader, Well, maybe
- 21:45I could locate Friendini. He might just fit into the bill. I haven't
- 21:48Morrow. Oh honey, I haven't seen Purty in years. I see what
- 21:51I can do for you, though. Good good, Thanks for her.
- 21:53You've been a great help. See you're on You find out anything, George,
- 22:04Yeah, plenty. Floria was a perfect mine of information, and he
- 22:07replied from say yeah, it says. Rina Morton left in hospital March DWNCE,
- 22:12nineteen thirty four by father and stepmother, Harry and Maddie Morton, known
- 22:17in vargill as Roger and Rita. Rita left home September sixth, nineteen fifty
- 22:22one. With step mother's listening. George Downtime's office, Square Brook speaking Ridge.
- 22:29Oh yes, mister breck and Ridge kelt. I'm not expected to pull
- 22:30through Valentine. Oh, he's very low. I'm sorry. I wanted to
- 22:36apologize to him the way I talked three to explain things to me. I
- 22:40wanted to tell them too. There will be another stay once tonight at nine
- 22:42o'clock. Going to be another tonight. You'll be there. George won't be
- 22:47able to make it. Of course, I'll come unless he needs me.
- 22:49We'll expect you. Sorry to hear about Talentine. Goodbye. He's sorry you
- 22:56won't be here. Oh, I'll be there, but i'll go in the
- 22:59back way. I have enough information how to make the spirits talk their heads
- 23:02off. I have asked you all to come here because we were so successful
- 23:14at our last meeting. Is sympathetic for us surrounds us, Miss Brooks.
- 23:18I'm glad to welcome you, but I'm sorry about mister Valentine. Hollies,
- 23:22haven't your voices told you you must not jest about the supernatural? My dear
- 23:27ladies, I'm not jesting. I'm just taking I know you hear many things
- 23:32we don't. May I ask you something? Of course? Did you ever
- 23:36see spirits as well as hear them? You may not believe me, but
- 23:41I have. When the atmosphere is right, when there is a proper silence,
- 23:49Do you hear me? Who is that lights? The lights will not
- 23:53go on until I have spoken with you, John breckon Rick. No,
- 24:00this is one who has only recently joined your band of spirits. I have
- 24:04messages for you all, missus Breckenridge. Do you hear me? Yes?
- 24:11I hear you? Don't change your will? What? That's why you called
- 24:15them all back tonight, wasn't it? Colma? John Breckenridge was going to
- 24:19tell his wife to divide the money, have to Rita and have to Thad.
- 24:25Half a off is better than none and safer than asking for all.
- 24:27You decided that when the shot didn't kill Thad, what did you say it
- 24:32was meant for you? Thad? If it hits you, there would have
- 24:33been no need for tonight's seance. Isn't that right? Martha? Then the
- 24:37money could have gone to Rita and eventually to you and Comma, who are
- 24:41you your victim? Martha? Too bad? Your aim isn't as good as
- 24:45it was in the old days before you had to wear glasses. But when
- 24:48your eyes get used to the dark, they'll be able to see me.
- 24:51I see something. I see his paste. There's a bood on his head,
- 24:55Gege Valentine. Someone turned on the light. That's right, Colma Valentine,
- 24:59come back to Haunch. The dead, don't come they I'm here to
- 25:02reveal a secret more wonderful than John Breckenridge's message. Raja and Rita not Juggler's
- 25:07Martha, but mind readers. Rita died and the place was taken by another
- 25:11reader, who was formerly known as Mattie the shore Shot. Rita and Raja
- 25:15had a daughter, a little Reader. When Mattie joined Raja, the little
- 25:18girl was put into an orphanage in Salem. It was easy to find it.
- 25:22When Emma Breckenridge asked about a sister's child, wasn't in Martha You had
- 25:26it all worked out, Matha? Is this true? Did you bring an
- 25:29imposter into mind? She's your own niece, Missus Breckenridge, Your sister Reada's
- 25:33child or reader? The black sheep of the family, The girl who ran
- 25:37away from home to be an actress and ended by being a fake mind reach
- 25:40what with me? Little Rita's father and the woman who was taking her mother's
- 25:44place in the act decided to get hold of some of the ants wanting they
- 25:47knew the ant believed in spirits. Shall I go on from there? No,
- 25:53you fixed me coming into my home. Rita didn't know. He wasn't
- 25:56a party to the plan. It was all my alias Mattie and Purley,
- 26:02the man who could open locks and Rajah or as you know him, Comma
- 26:07my father, Oh no Puss to keep an eye on market. I'll tell
- 26:14him, mister Valentine, find the information. Some guests working a little luck.
- 26:22Wait, don't I get this makeup off? And I'll tell you just
- 26:37one of the many extras you get from your car savers is a sparkling windshield
- 26:41service. Nothing can spoil a pleasure drive like the kind of eyes stream caused
- 26:45by a grimy windshield. Car savers use plenty of elbow grease and really get
- 26:51him clean. You're welcome anytime, so stop in soon for sparkling windshield service.
- 26:56It's just one of the many reasons why the car savers at independent Shevron
- 27:00gas stations and standard stations say and mean we take better care of your car.
- 27:17I'm deeply indebted to you, mister Valentine, all in the day's work.
- 27:21Missus Breckenridge, I don't see how you knew it was Missus Hadley's shot
- 27:23at you. Well, I couldn't have been that he was with us.
- 27:26The odds were against Missus Breckenridge and Rita. I already suspected Martha Hadley.
- 27:30Why well, I had a hunch that she'd been in vaudeville herself. You
- 27:36know, most people call a man or a woman from the stage an actor
- 27:38or actress. The people from Portville usually say performer. She also used the
- 27:42expression next to closing. Then, when I found out she'd lied by telling
- 27:48me Rita and Raja was jugglers, I knew I was on the right track.
- 27:51And I remember that had been an act on the bill call Shore Shot
- 27:53Maddie Florie's information Clinston. Oh, you're really frightened me, mister Valentine,
- 27:57when you appeared in that have light with her to fight face in the wound
- 28:02down your pardon? You frighten me too, George didn't know I expected to
- 28:04see you. How see did you get a handsome check? I or you
- 28:07were a love for showing up that Charlatan. Thank you missus Bregaz. I
- 28:11hope to see you again some time. You will tell me how these mediums
- 28:15do some of the I'd be happy too, and you could do something else
- 28:18for me. Yes, mister Valentine, Well try and make it easy for
- 28:22reading. She feels barely enough about Comma being her farther. I will,
- 28:26mister Valentine, goodbye, bye bye. Oh that was nice of you to
- 28:33think of reader George. After all, she wants our clients. I get
- 28:37sad, will help us forget. You know, they invited us to their
- 28:41wedding. There go. I don't like weddings. Well there's one wedding.
- 28:45I hope I can get you too. Yeah, who's the spirit? Garnan
- 28:49will tell you Mike's transcribed adventure If George Valentine had been brought to you by
- 29:07Standard Oil Company of California on behalf of independent Shevron Gas Stations and Standard Stations
- 29:14throughout the West. Robert Bailey has starred at George with Virginia Gregg at Brooksey.
- 29:18Let George Do. It was written by Davis Kapton, directed by Kenneth
- 29:22Webb Larry Dobkin, was heard as Kalma, Virginia Eisler Adrita, Frank Hale
- 29:27as Martha, Tom McKee Astad, and Ruth Parrott as Emma. Music was
- 29:33composed and presented by George Wright your announcer John Heaston. Listen again next week,
- 29:48same time, same station to Let George Do It. Let George doo
- 30:00It has heard overseas through the world wide facilities of the Armed Forces Radio Service.
- 30:11This is the mutual dun Lee Broadcasting System. Welcome back, Well.
- 30:30I have to say this was actually a pretty impressive episode. Obviously, they're
- 30:37training on familiar ground for any mystery program. I did like. I did
- 30:47like the whole idea of George pretending to come back from the dead. Now,
- 30:53that is drama well played, and also it helped the mystic was a
- 31:02little less obvious in some ways than usual. You know, the usual mystic
- 31:08of these stories will be all about the dark lights and the obvious scams in
- 31:18terms of moving parts to prey on the gullible, but lawn stop and played
- 31:26the character as a lot more smooth. So this is one of the more
- 31:33better written episodes I think we've seen in quite a while. So very nicely
- 31:36done all right, When we do have a one listener question and it comes
- 31:41from Jim who says, Hi, Adam, I enjoy your podcast cast.
- 31:45My question deals with the use of the term transcribe, which is used in
- 31:49various ways transcribe from Hollywood, etc. What does it mean the dictionary definitions
- 31:56haven't helped. Transcribed in this case means recorded previously and you will you will
- 32:05hear that on quite a few episodes. And from what I gathered, this
- 32:08was something the FCC at the time I wanted because early on in radio they
- 32:15feared that radio could become nothing more than people playing a bunch of records,
- 32:22and they wanted more live entertainment and live programming, and so it was hoped
- 32:31by putting the transcribed on it, making them put transcribed on it and encourage
- 32:37more of the live programming. But it just tended to work as this was
- 32:42recorded previously, so transcribed in Hollywood that just means it was recorded in Hollywood.
- 32:49And there are a wide variety of different reasons that this was done.
- 32:52Certainly the convenience of the actors transcribed aloud. You know, some actors even
- 32:58appear on different programs on the same day. Some people even manage to do
- 33:02that without transcription. Phil Harris, who worked on The Jack Benny Show for
- 33:09CBS, also had his own show on NBC, so he would actually be
- 33:14in The Jack Benny Show for only about the first half of the show,
- 33:19then he would get up and go across to NBC to record his own program,
- 33:25The Magic of Early Radio. Well, I hope that answers your question,
- 33:29and I think I may have more than answered it. That's the one's
- 33:31just a freebie, all right. Well, that'll do it for today.
- 33:36Join us back here tomorrow for Sherlock Holmes, and then be with us next
