Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I didn't have a good day, and like that's the
- 0:01Speaker 1: reality of it. But I think it's really important to
- 0:05Speaker 1: still like share those moments and not just.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Like the highlights.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Good morning, good afternoon, good evening.
- 0:25Speaker 4: Emily about a year popping in with a special episode
- 0:28Speaker 4: of Hurdle Live from Tokyo here for the World Athletics Championships,
- 0:34Speaker 4: and sat down with Team USA's three marathoners, all Brooks
- 0:40Speaker 4: running athletes. We've got Erica Kemp, Susannah Sullivan, and Jess
- 0:45Speaker 4: McLean who all told the starting line of one hell
- 0:50Speaker 4: of a marathon on Sunday, September fourteenth. For contexts, as
- 0:55Speaker 4: we talk about in today's episode, the temperatures out there
- 0:58Speaker 4: are real feel of the High nine. These intense humidity,
- 1:01Speaker 4: cusping one hundred percent crazy, crazy conditions, but truly remarkable
- 1:08Speaker 4: to watch these women get out and do their thing.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Susannah went for glory.
- 1:15Speaker 4: She finished fourth in the World Championship a marathon. For
- 1:18Speaker 4: a better part of the race, she was actually leading
- 1:21Speaker 4: the pack for a considerable amount alongside Jess McLean. Erica
- 1:26Speaker 4: ultimately had a tougher day, finishing fifty second their times respectively.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Susannah into twenty eight seventeen, Jess in two twenty nine
- 1:35Speaker 4: twenty and Erica in two fifty thirty five. In today's conversation,
- 1:39Speaker 4: we talk about it all. We talked about the prep,
- 1:41Speaker 4: we talk about the day, We talk about the highs
- 1:43Speaker 4: and the lows, the lessons, learned what it was like
- 1:46Speaker 4: immediately following the race, how they celebrated, and of course
- 1:50Speaker 4: what's next.
- 1:51Speaker 3: So's a stillar opportunity.
- 1:53Speaker 4: To sit down with these ladies at the Brooks Hyperion
- 1:55Speaker 4: House here as a marathoner myself a massive fan of
- 1:58Speaker 4: the sport, you couldn't have asked for a better opportunity.
- 2:01Speaker 4: So to the Brooks team, thanks for welcoming me in.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Each of these women have really gotten to this point
- 2:08Speaker 4: with their own roadmap, on their own terms, writing their
- 2:12Speaker 4: own pages in the record books in the process. And wow,
- 2:17Speaker 4: I am in awe with that. Keeping this intro short
- 2:21Speaker 4: and sweet, I'm over at Emily a Body and at
- 2:23Speaker 4: Hurdle podcast on the Socials. If you're not subscribed to
- 2:27Speaker 4: the podcast, make sure to slam that button. And while
- 2:29Speaker 4: you're at it, in the show notes, there's a link

- 2:47Speaker 4: in the show notes. With that, let's get to it.
- 2:50Speaker 4: Let's get to a hurdling.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Hey, everybody, I'm Emily.
- 3:00Speaker 4: I am so happy to be here in Tokyo with
- 3:03Speaker 4: the lovely ladies of Team USA, our marathoners here at
- 3:07Speaker 4: the Brooks Hyperion House.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Let's give it up for them.
- 3:15Speaker 4: We have the Erica Kemp to my right, Jess McLain
- 3:23Speaker 4: and Susanna Sullivan. All right, we love to get get
- 3:28Speaker 4: off with a level set. It's been a little over
- 3:31Speaker 4: twenty four hours. So Erica, how are you doing really?
- 3:38Speaker 1: I'm doing okay. I'm doing a lot better than last night.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Stairs are not great and there are quite a few
- 3:45Speaker 1: stairs getting on and off the train. So it's been
- 3:49Speaker 1: a journey through Tokyo this morning. But I'm alive.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I'm alive. Alive is a good place to start. Jess,
- 3:55Speaker 3: how are you doing? Really?
- 3:56Speaker 5: I'm doing great.
- 3:57Speaker 6: I feel like you know, legs Arowy interesting coming back
- 4:00Speaker 6: from a marathon. I usually have a tonail situation post marathon,
- 4:04Speaker 6: and I think with the humidity and stuff out there
- 4:06Speaker 6: like yesterday, that was my biggest thing I've been dealing with.
- 4:09Speaker 6: But other than that, I'm like just stoked to be here.
- 4:12Speaker 6: Like I feel like I've been soaking in the Japan experience.
- 4:14Speaker 6: But now I can just hang with the Brooks vam
- 4:16Speaker 6: and like keep the party going.
- 4:17Speaker 5: So stoked. Head to the track too tonight.
- 4:20Speaker 3: So so excited, Susannah.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I'm still riding the high from yesterday. I
- 4:24Speaker 2: feel good.
- 4:25Speaker 7: My quads are sore, but aside from that, yeah, yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 7: oh pretty good.
- 4:30Speaker 6: Did Susanna swim today though, yes, Oh my gosh. She
- 4:35Speaker 6: was like, yeah, I actually went in the slow lane
- 4:37Speaker 6: at the pool though, That's what she said just today,
- 4:40Speaker 6: because who takes a rest day after running a marathon.
- 4:46Speaker 3: I'm sure it was good for the purposes of active recovery.
- 4:48Speaker 5: Though. Yeah.
- 4:49Speaker 7: No, this is maybe the best I've ever felt the
- 4:52Speaker 7: day after a marathon, which is encouraging. But we drank
- 4:55Speaker 7: crushed stevel bottles of water and the like underneath the
- 4:59Speaker 7: stadium yesterday, but before we got out.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Into the world stuff.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Oh my gosh. Well, speaking of crushing a lot of water.
- 5:06Speaker 4: You crushed a lot of miles twenty six point two
- 5:09Speaker 4: through Tokyo. I want to hear and started us off
- 5:12Speaker 4: today from all of you about maybe the highlight for
- 5:15Speaker 4: you on the course and the low light for you
- 5:17Speaker 4: on the course. Jess, give me your highlight of the
- 5:20Speaker 4: course yesterday. Oh gosh, I have so many.
- 5:22Speaker 6: I think one of the highlights was definitely rolling to
- 5:26Speaker 6: the front with Susannah.
- 5:27Speaker 5: I don't think.
- 5:28Speaker 6: I've I've seen myself more as like a chaser in
- 5:32Speaker 6: the marathons, like I've never like visualized or like seen
- 5:35Speaker 6: myself up front being like I don't know, like a
- 5:38Speaker 6: leader of the race. So I think once Susannah, I
- 5:42Speaker 6: think you were up at the front early on here
- 5:44Speaker 6: and there, and then some of the African athletes were
- 5:47Speaker 6: chatting and trying to like slow the pace down, and
- 5:50Speaker 6: we could just looked at each other like this is
- 5:51Speaker 6: so annoying, like the pace is kind of oscillating, and
- 5:53Speaker 6: then She's like, I'm coming out, and then we just
- 5:56Speaker 6: like swooped to the outside and went to the front together,
- 5:58Speaker 6: and I think that was like that was my highlight,
- 6:01Speaker 6: was running with Susannah and then seeing her going into
- 6:03Speaker 6: the hairpinterns just looking so good.
- 6:05Speaker 5: And just throwing her thumbs up.
- 6:07Speaker 6: Low lights, Man, I you know, I knew it was
- 6:09Speaker 6: gonna get really hard at some point. I think that's
- 6:13Speaker 6: been most of my training, is like what's going to
- 6:15Speaker 6: happen when you're you hit the point where it's like
- 6:18Speaker 6: it's just so hard. And that happened for me maybe
- 6:21Speaker 6: around like thirty thirty to thirty five K and I
- 6:25Speaker 6: just kind of like use the momentum of the pack
- 6:28Speaker 6: that caught me and some of the athletes that were
- 6:29Speaker 6: in the mix. So not really a low light, but
- 6:32Speaker 6: just kind of the point of the race where it's like, Okay,
- 6:34Speaker 6: it's getting tough.
- 6:35Speaker 5: This is where this is what we've been thinking about
- 6:37Speaker 5: the whole block and just visualizing getting through.
- 6:39Speaker 4: So yeah, I mean, speaking of that, when when we
- 6:42Speaker 4: sat down before the marathon here in Tokyo, you told
- 6:45Speaker 4: me that success for you would be trusting your training.
- 6:49Speaker 4: You said, if I fall a little bit short because
- 6:51Speaker 4: I shot my shot, that's fine.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Is that what you felt like? What happened yesterday?
- 6:57Speaker 5: I think so? I think I really wanted top five.
- 7:00Speaker 6: I think, you know, being top seven, top eight at
- 7:02Speaker 6: a world major that gave me the confidence that I
- 7:04Speaker 6: can like hang. But I was like, man, I really
- 7:06Speaker 6: want to do something big on the world stage. But
- 7:08Speaker 6: I'm like, you know what, leading with Susannah for so long,
- 7:11Speaker 6: being in second, like the Americans leading the World Championships.
- 7:15Speaker 6: I mean, people probably thought we were crazy and like, oh,
- 7:17Speaker 6: they're just gonna blow up, But.
- 7:18Speaker 5: Like, you have to put yourself in it, Like the
- 7:20Speaker 5: Americans aren't in a.
- 7:21Speaker 6: Place if you don't take a shot like that, and
- 7:23Speaker 6: it's like what happens if it sticks and we're chipping
- 7:27Speaker 6: away at it? Like two women in the top eight.
- 7:28Speaker 6: Clayton got night today. That's amazing. So yeah, I think
- 7:32Speaker 6: I shot my shot and fell a little bit short,
- 7:34Speaker 6: but I'm super stoked.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Yeah, shot my shot and fell a little bit short.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Speaking of going in to a race and giving it
- 7:41Speaker 4: all you've got, Erica, when I sat down with you,
- 7:43Speaker 4: you said, when the gun goes off, the pages are blank.
- 7:46Speaker 4: The story of the race hasn't been written yet. What's
- 7:50Speaker 4: the story of yesterday's race for you?
- 7:54Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 7:54Speaker 1: I couldn't have written that. I probably would have written
- 7:57Speaker 1: it a little different in hindsight, but yeah, I mean,
- 8:01Speaker 1: you just never know how you're gonna feel I have,
- 8:05Speaker 1: Like definitely we did everything we could to like prepare
- 8:08Speaker 1: for the conditions to prepare for this race, like mentally physically,
- 8:12Speaker 1: So it's like it was a weird experience knowing like
- 8:15Speaker 1: you did everything you possibly could to like be ready
- 8:18Speaker 1: for the moment, and then you get on the start line,
- 8:20Speaker 1: you like try to meet the moment, and then everything
- 8:23Speaker 1: kind of goes sideways a lot, like sooner than you anticipated.
- 8:26Speaker 1: The way the course was looped was actually like really great,
- 8:30Speaker 1: even though like it got really hard for me, like
- 8:32Speaker 1: way earlier than I would have anticipated. I got to
- 8:35Speaker 1: see Jess in Susannah absolutely like flying past me, like
- 8:39Speaker 1: on the backside, which is always my favorite type of
- 8:41Speaker 1: course when you're going out and the other runners are
- 8:43Speaker 1: coming back because you can just like share those moments
- 8:46Speaker 1: even though you're at different stages in the race.
- 8:48Speaker 2: So that was really great.
- 8:50Speaker 1: I mean, even though it was like taking me a
- 8:52Speaker 1: long time to finish, I was just like so committed
- 8:56Speaker 1: to doing it for myself, for everyone cheering at home,
- 8:58Speaker 1: and like the last time I saw these two, I
- 9:01Speaker 1: was like I need to finish because I wanted to
- 9:02Speaker 1: see them on the podium like as far as I know,
- 9:05Speaker 1: last time I checked in there like winning and I
- 9:07Speaker 1: had like full confidence that they would probably do it.
- 9:11Speaker 2: So yeah, it was it was up and down.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Yeah, up and down, understandably so, and again to reiterate
- 9:17Speaker 4: such a wildly difficult day out there, I think at
- 9:21Speaker 4: the end of the day, the humidity was above ninety
- 9:23Speaker 4: five percent during parts of this race, which is not
- 9:26Speaker 4: what we're dealing with for the most part at home.
- 9:29Speaker 4: And we'll talk a little bit about some of the
- 9:31Speaker 4: preparations that you did in order to gear up for
- 9:33Speaker 4: that year in Tokyo. But Erica, what I find so
- 9:36Speaker 4: admirable about your performance yesterday is that you stayed in
- 9:40Speaker 4: it despite it feeling very challenging and maybe for it
- 9:44Speaker 4: not to go as you had hoped. In those moments
- 9:47Speaker 4: where you truly felt like extreme frustration, Where did your
- 9:53Speaker 4: mind go and how did you manage to keep clipping
- 9:58Speaker 4: forward with a little bit more positive mindset?
- 10:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, for sure, one of the first thoughts
- 10:05Speaker 1: was my teammates up front. I know, they were like
- 10:07Speaker 1: putting everything they had into every step and I couldn't
- 10:11Speaker 1: do anything less than that. But also just thinking about
- 10:14Speaker 1: everyone that tuned in back home like they had a
- 10:16Speaker 1: watch party at a local brewery where I train, and
- 10:19Speaker 1: like just like so so much support out on the course.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Just there are so many people who showed up. It's
- 10:25Speaker 2: like the least I can do is show up as
- 10:27Speaker 2: with everything I have.
- 10:28Speaker 1: And even though especially in the second half of the race,
- 10:31Speaker 1: I didn't have much, it's like I can still give
- 10:33Speaker 1: it everything I have, so just one step out of time.
- 10:37Speaker 1: And like I said in a couple like pre race
- 10:40Speaker 1: interviews or like what success and it's like success is
- 10:43Speaker 1: finishing on empty and unfortunately I did. It didn't quite
- 10:48Speaker 1: get me the result I was looking for, but it
- 10:52Speaker 1: was just huge to know that there was nothing more
- 10:54Speaker 1: that I could do. And even though it's like not
- 10:57Speaker 1: the best result on paper, I feel like it was
- 11:01Speaker 1: really important for me to conquer that like pride of
- 11:03Speaker 1: it of like, oh, like I only want to have
- 11:06Speaker 1: like these highlights in my record. It's like, no, it
- 11:08Speaker 1: was a pretty bad day and there's a permanent record
- 11:11Speaker 1: of it. Anyone can google it. There's plenty of photos
- 11:14Speaker 1: and videos out there. But like that's also just real,
- 11:17Speaker 1: like I didn't have a good day and like that's
- 11:20Speaker 1: the reality of it. But I think it's really important
- 11:23Speaker 1: to still like share those moments and not just like
- 11:26Speaker 1: the highlights. And that's been the response I've gotten so far,
- 11:29Speaker 1: especially like in my DMS and in my comments, is like,
- 11:33Speaker 1: thank you for not like trying to paint over it
- 11:35Speaker 1: and pretend it didn't happen, because like we've all had
- 11:39Speaker 1: days like that, hopefully not a lot. You know, I'd
- 11:42Speaker 1: like that to be my most bad day ever, but yeah,
- 11:46Speaker 1: I mean, it was just really important to see it
- 11:48Speaker 1: all the way through, even if it wasn't like the
- 11:50Speaker 1: prettiest thing.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Yeah, and I although maybe in your words it's not
- 11:55Speaker 4: the prettiest thing, it is to the point of your
- 11:58Speaker 4: comments in your DMS, such a beautiful example of how
- 12:02Speaker 4: you can turn this pain into continuing along with your purpose.
- 12:07Speaker 4: We've all heard of this rule of thirds, which is
- 12:10Speaker 4: the bad part of your training is a third, the
- 12:12Speaker 4: okay part of your training is a third, and the
- 12:15Speaker 4: good part of your training.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Is a third at best.
- 12:17Speaker 4: And so unfortunately, sometimes you're going to go out there
- 12:20Speaker 4: and the bad part is going to be when you
- 12:22Speaker 4: don't hope for it to be. Speaking of plugging away, Susanne,
- 12:26Speaker 4: or early on you decided we're not oscillating on this pace.
- 12:31Speaker 4: What was the mindset on that, and is that what
- 12:34Speaker 4: you anticipated that you would do?
- 12:37Speaker 7: Not really, but I'm sure that everybody finds that to
- 12:40Speaker 7: be a surprise. I know that a lot of people
- 12:43Speaker 7: are like, yeah, she's just gonna go to the lead.
- 12:46Speaker 7: I had actually spoken with my coach the day before
- 12:48Speaker 7: about not doing that. We had we suspected that there
- 12:51Speaker 7: might be like a flyer or two where you know,
- 12:55Speaker 7: somebody just went out at some pace that was just unsustainable,
- 12:59Speaker 7: and he said, just like, don't do that, and just
- 13:03Speaker 7: you know, stay in the lead back and you know,
- 13:06Speaker 7: understand that you're gonna have to be patient for Yeah,
- 13:10Speaker 7: we thought maybe half halfway, maybe a little further, but
- 13:14Speaker 7: he also said, like you're gonna have to trust your
- 13:16Speaker 7: instincts and trust your training and like, you know what
- 13:18Speaker 7: it's supposed to feel like. And one of the nice
- 13:20Speaker 7: things about training in Virginia is that, like it's always humid,
- 13:24Speaker 7: and it's actually been unseasonably cool and pleasant the last
- 13:28Speaker 7: couple of weeks, which was Eric and I were texting
- 13:30Speaker 7: about like the East Coast weather, like the last couple
- 13:33Speaker 7: of weeks, like come on, like it's gonna so yeah,
- 13:42Speaker 7: but I did some heat training stuff, especially this past week,
- 13:45Speaker 7: was going and getting in the hot job, and so
- 13:47Speaker 7: when I was out there on the course, I was
- 13:50Speaker 7: like telling myself, this is not as bad as making
- 13:52Speaker 7: the hot job, and yeah, so it like it felt
- 13:58Speaker 7: really comfortable and I felt well, like, you know, I
- 14:01Speaker 7: had done long runs that felt a lot, a lot
- 14:03Speaker 7: harder than what we were doing early on, and I
- 14:06Speaker 7: was like, okay, like I've been here before, I know
- 14:08Speaker 7: what to do. And I mean, yeah, I was a
- 14:12Speaker 7: little nervous about, you know, being out in front, but
- 14:16Speaker 7: it felt right.
- 14:17Speaker 2: So I've tried to trust that it was okay.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Yeah, trying to trust.
- 14:22Speaker 4: And that's such a through line when it comes to
- 14:24Speaker 4: marathon and right because so often you were coming back
- 14:27Speaker 4: and going into that rate of perceived exertion, like how
- 14:30Speaker 4: do I feel in this moment? Do I have anything
- 14:32Speaker 4: else to give? I really appreciate what Jess said about
- 14:35Speaker 4: being someone who was willing to take the lead in
- 14:38Speaker 4: going to take the lead, in going to push that pace.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Were you at an RPE that was perhaps higher than
- 14:46Speaker 4: you were used to, and how did you get comfortable
- 14:48Speaker 4: living in that state of discomfort?
- 14:51Speaker 5: It was really weird.
- 14:52Speaker 6: I felt like it was just it was almost like
- 14:54Speaker 6: my body just took over and like put it into
- 14:56Speaker 6: like the next drive and just did it. Like I
- 14:58Speaker 6: didn't really think too much about it, and I think
- 15:01Speaker 6: it's taken a long time to get to a point
- 15:02Speaker 6: where I'm not like in my head going back and
- 15:06Speaker 6: forth about you know, decision making in a race like that.
- 15:09Speaker 6: It just felt very instinctual to like chat with Susannah
- 15:12Speaker 6: for a minute and then just go together. And she
- 15:14Speaker 6: looked like running next to her, I was like, oh, damn,
- 15:17Speaker 6: she looks so she's barely breathing. She's like her mouth's
- 15:20Speaker 6: not even open. I was like, she's yeah, she just
- 15:22Speaker 6: looks so good. And I knew that, you know, likely
- 15:26Speaker 6: as the race went on, she might pull away a
- 15:28Speaker 6: little bit and then yeah. I think the no man's
- 15:31Speaker 6: land used to scare me a lot, like ending up alone. Uh,
- 15:34Speaker 6: But honestly, I think, you know, the tough part about
- 15:37Speaker 6: doing some training on your own is that you're left
- 15:39Speaker 6: to your own devices, and you're doing it solo here
- 15:41Speaker 6: and there.
- 15:41Speaker 5: I do have a great group.
- 15:42Speaker 6: At home, but I've done a lot of runs solo too,
- 15:44Speaker 6: so I've gotten used to like living in my own head,
- 15:47Speaker 6: being my own best friend.
- 15:48Speaker 5: I did not used to be that.
- 15:50Speaker 6: So it's like getting the confidence to be, you know,
- 15:54Speaker 6: just confident in making those decisions and then living with it.
- 15:57Speaker 6: And you know, if if the pack swallowed me up,
- 16:00Speaker 6: which I assumed, you know, the hairpin turns gave us
- 16:02Speaker 6: the visibility.
- 16:03Speaker 5: To the pack, you know and those behind us, which
- 16:05Speaker 5: was good.
- 16:06Speaker 6: And then you know, there was a point where I
- 16:07Speaker 6: was like, Susannah, they're coming, you know, swallowed me up.
- 16:11Speaker 6: She still looked great, But it was in that moment
- 16:13Speaker 6: where I was like, okay, you know, if the African
- 16:16Speaker 6: athletes catch you, try to go with them.
- 16:19Speaker 5: That was tough, they were moving.
- 16:20Speaker 6: But then there were a few athletes kind off that
- 16:22Speaker 6: pack that I kind of use this momentum. I was
- 16:25Speaker 6: running with the Japanese athletes, so to me, it literally
- 16:27Speaker 6: sounded like a world major the whole time because they
- 16:29Speaker 6: were so loud. As the Japanese came by and my family,
- 16:33Speaker 6: I guess they were like, yeah, it was just very
- 16:35Speaker 6: quiet and polite until you know, like people would run
- 16:37Speaker 6: by and then they'd be quiet on the streets and
- 16:40Speaker 6: I'm like, I didn't hear that at all because I
- 16:41Speaker 6: was running with one of their athletes, which.
- 16:43Speaker 5: Was great, but no, I felt I didn't have a
- 16:46Speaker 5: sense of panic at all.
- 16:47Speaker 6: There were a few miles that were really tough where
- 16:50Speaker 6: I was like, just get to the next station.
- 16:52Speaker 5: I was working the whole time.
- 16:53Speaker 6: I was putting stuff on my head, stuffing my bra
- 16:56Speaker 6: with ice, taking water, taking like sponges, everything I could do.
- 17:00Speaker 5: So I was pretty busy, Like I was.
- 17:02Speaker 6: Just thinking the whole time, focusing on this fueling stations
- 17:06Speaker 6: and honestly water, Like at some point, water is all
- 17:08Speaker 6: I wanted, and I was just taking that in And
- 17:10Speaker 6: I feel like I was revived pretty much every eight station.
- 17:13Speaker 6: That helped a lot, But yeah, you never know what
- 17:15Speaker 6: the next mile will bring.
- 17:16Speaker 5: So I kind of repeat that to myself.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Two things to double click on.
- 17:19Speaker 4: The first thing that sentiment of I got to a
- 17:22Speaker 4: place where I was better at being my own best.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Friend and learning how to handle it on my own.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Can you talk a little bit about what that process
- 17:29Speaker 4: developing that mentality was like for you and how you've
- 17:33Speaker 4: been able to get more comfortable toughing it out solo.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Gosh, it's not like a tangible like how to guide up.
- 17:42Speaker 6: I wish it was that easy. I Yeah, racing used
- 17:46Speaker 6: to be really tough for me. It used to be
- 17:47Speaker 6: like I was a workout hero. You know, workouts are fine,
- 17:51Speaker 6: and then racing, for some reason, I just felt like
- 17:53Speaker 6: so vulnerable and like like it was something that I
- 17:56Speaker 6: was almost scared and fearful to do. And maybe it
- 17:59Speaker 6: was just because I was in over my head or
- 18:01Speaker 6: my body wasn't doing what it was supposed to do
- 18:03Speaker 6: for me, so I wasn't confident. But now it's like
- 18:04Speaker 6: I've taken the last you know, during COVID the last
- 18:07Speaker 6: three years to just like do a lot of what
- 18:11Speaker 6: not only makes me confident, but just like makes my
- 18:13Speaker 6: body feel good and I don't worry that it's not enough.
- 18:17Speaker 6: I think I was always kind of playing the comparison
- 18:19Speaker 6: game a little bit, and it's hard. Like you have
- 18:21Speaker 6: Strava out there, you have Instagram, like you know what
- 18:23Speaker 6: people are doing, Like it's easy to see what you know,
- 18:26Speaker 6: workouts people are crushing and long runs. But I've just
- 18:29Speaker 6: learned to stick to my guns and trust the training
- 18:32Speaker 6: and that I need.
- 18:33Speaker 5: What I need.
- 18:35Speaker 6: And I think it just takes a lot of time,
- 18:36Speaker 6: Like people lean on different modalities of you know, whether
- 18:40Speaker 6: it's therapy or whatever it is to like get to
- 18:43Speaker 6: the nitty gritties of what's going on. But for me,
- 18:45Speaker 6: it's just been like perspective, taking a beat, getting my
- 18:48Speaker 6: body healthy, and then just.
- 18:50Speaker 5: Like really enjoying it, like having fun.
- 18:52Speaker 6: Yeah, And I think this experience has just been like
- 18:55Speaker 6: I've been visualizing this, all of this for so long,
- 18:58Speaker 6: and I'm like, I'm not going to get to Tokyo,
- 18:59Speaker 6: not how fun like I'm gonna I'm gonna embrace it.
- 19:02Speaker 6: And I feel like being here with them is like
- 19:04Speaker 6: the coolest thing ever. Did I like like visualize that
- 19:08Speaker 6: in my head No, which made it even better have
- 19:11Speaker 6: an experience.
- 19:12Speaker 5: So so, yeah, Erica, you're not in.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Your head a lot.
- 19:15Speaker 4: And the way that she's talking actually reminds me of
- 19:17Speaker 4: something that you said to me in the studio, which
- 19:19Speaker 4: was how your best races happen when you find this
- 19:23Speaker 4: flow state, right, and that is something that you've had
- 19:27Speaker 4: to kind of come to terms with and understand over
- 19:29Speaker 4: the last year or so. Can you explain what flow
- 19:32Speaker 4: state looks like for you and maybe how you get
- 19:35Speaker 4: to that place when you're running?
- 19:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think it's just that like feeling
- 19:41Speaker 1: that like Susanna and Jess were describing when they like
- 19:44Speaker 1: went to make their move or take the lead, like
- 19:45Speaker 1: it feels right, Like everything you're doing in that moment
- 19:48Speaker 1: feels right. It feels like this is what you trained
- 19:52Speaker 1: for and it's all paying off. Like your fit, you're strong,
- 19:55Speaker 1: like you're not your body's not stressed. It's just moving
- 19:58Speaker 1: exactly the way you want it to. You also like
- 20:01Speaker 1: have this like peace that like what you're doing in
- 20:03Speaker 1: this moment is like the right thing to do. And
- 20:07Speaker 1: that's like such a special place to find in a race,
- 20:10Speaker 1: and it's something we definitely like try to practice like
- 20:13Speaker 1: in workouts, especially like the challenging ones, whether it's just
- 20:17Speaker 1: really long long run or just really tough conditions, like
- 20:21Speaker 1: trying to find it. And I did almost find it yesterday,
- 20:26Speaker 1: which was like you felt it a little bit a
- 20:28Speaker 1: little bit because the start was so cool, like starting
- 20:32Speaker 1: in the stadium, Like at first, the thought of doing
- 20:35Speaker 1: a thousand meters on the track before a marathon sounded
- 20:38Speaker 1: so silly, but then when you're actually like in the
- 20:40Speaker 1: stadium and you get to like run a thousand meters
- 20:42Speaker 1: on the track, it's actually.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Like very cool.
- 20:46Speaker 1: And then you go out and at first I was
- 20:50Speaker 1: like it didn't feel that hot in the sense that
- 20:54Speaker 1: like the sun wasn't like bearing down on you. So
- 20:56Speaker 1: I was like, oh my gosh, like it's not going
- 20:59Speaker 1: to be that bad, Like I can do this. And
- 21:03Speaker 1: then we clicked off a few two like spicy splits
- 21:06Speaker 1: for me, and I knew like around like seven or
- 21:10Speaker 1: eight miles, I was like, oh, I think I've like
- 21:13Speaker 1: crossed that line like a little too early. And at
- 21:16Speaker 1: that point it was like so warm, it's like really
- 21:18Speaker 1: hard to like pull it back. So working on that
- 21:22Speaker 1: secondary flow state alternative when you lose it, but yeah,
- 21:28Speaker 1: it's just something you just like work on every day.
- 21:33Speaker 4: Yeah, So what I'm hearing you say is Susanna's the
- 21:36Speaker 4: problem exactly exactly. The other thing that I wanted to
- 21:40Speaker 4: double click on is you mentioned fueling. Obviously a huge
- 21:44Speaker 4: component of yesterday's race. Susanna, talk to us a little
- 21:47Speaker 4: bit about what your fueling was like yesterday during the
- 21:51Speaker 4: twenty six point.
- 21:52Speaker 7: Two Yeah, like Jess said, I feel like the stations,
- 21:55Speaker 7: I'm was like constantly working. I was constantly thinking about
- 21:58Speaker 7: like what was happening next at the end, like I
- 22:01Speaker 7: think the last two So there were our personal stations,
- 22:04Speaker 7: which were you know, we had put out bottles with
- 22:08Speaker 7: all sorts of you know, I.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Had a lot of gatorade.
- 22:11Speaker 7: I And earlier this summer we did some sweatesting with
- 22:15Speaker 7: Brooks and I learned that I'm apparently a very salty sweater,
- 22:18Speaker 7: which I I didn't realize because I've never been somebody
- 22:21Speaker 7: to have like a salt crust on my shirt or
- 22:23Speaker 7: anything at the end of her run. But that was
- 22:26Speaker 7: helpful information because over the summer we were just trying
- 22:30Speaker 7: to take in saltier you know options, and you know,
- 22:36Speaker 7: tried out a couple of things and tried to figure
- 22:38Speaker 7: out like what flavors I liked, and I ended up
- 22:40Speaker 7: just having gatorade with salt in it because that's what
- 22:43Speaker 7: tasted good. But near the end in the general water
- 22:48Speaker 7: stations they had Maccari sweat, which is like Japanese gatorade.
- 22:52Speaker 7: And there were two stops where I took three cups
- 22:56Speaker 7: in the span of like, you know, ten meters. I
- 22:58Speaker 7: probably looked like a Luna to I, like hand over
- 23:02Speaker 7: fist grabbing cups, but yeah, I really needed it.
- 23:05Speaker 5: At the end, it was it was getting spicy, so you.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Can never I'll never forget the imagery of Molly's cidle
- 23:13Speaker 4: at the Olympics, like ripping theme in the ice bag
- 23:15Speaker 4: and like stuffing it all over herself. With the things
- 23:20Speaker 4: that were available to all of you along the course.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Is that anything you practiced with prior.
- 23:24Speaker 5: To this, I think obviously our personal feeling. For sure.
- 23:29Speaker 6: We worked with Bridge at Brooks and then USATF to
- 23:32Speaker 6: kind of like come up with different cooling methods along
- 23:36Speaker 6: the course. I think they learned a lot from Clayton's
- 23:39Speaker 6: experience in Paris last year, and he's just so dialed in.
- 23:42Speaker 5: With all of that.
- 23:42Speaker 6: But we had, honestly, my favorite things out there were
- 23:45Speaker 6: like the personal towels with ice wrapped in it because
- 23:48Speaker 6: they just stayed cold. You can keep the ice in there.
- 23:50Speaker 6: And I held a towel like pretty much the whole race,
- 23:53Speaker 6: and I was just patting myself and keeping myself cool.
- 23:56Speaker 5: We had these hats.
- 23:57Speaker 4: I'm sure people, you don't think it's your most attractive
- 24:01Speaker 4: look of all time.
- 24:02Speaker 6: Oh oh man, you know it's worth it's worth it
- 24:05Speaker 6: to stay cool.
- 24:06Speaker 5: But I think they were okay.
- 24:08Speaker 6: Honestly, I spent so much time my hair was a
- 24:10Speaker 6: problem and just getting it on and off. It was
- 24:13Speaker 6: just too much. So at some point I was like,
- 24:14Speaker 6: stick to the ice. We're lucky as women to have
- 24:18Speaker 6: sports bras. Stuff it in there, keep it up, keep
- 24:20Speaker 6: it close to the chest. So I was pretty much
- 24:23Speaker 6: doing that and then keeping like ice in my mouth,
- 24:26Speaker 6: ice in my hands, just ice everywhere. And the ice
- 24:29Speaker 6: bags were great actually because you could run with them
- 24:31Speaker 6: for a little bit, tear it open when you needed it.
- 24:33Speaker 6: But yeah, I would say like the biggest thing was
- 24:36Speaker 6: being able to work with Brooks and like months out
- 24:39Speaker 6: at our little training camps that we've done in the lab,
- 24:42Speaker 6: Brooks hook me up with ASU back home to do some.
- 24:44Speaker 5: Humidity chamber sessions, which.
- 24:46Speaker 6: Yeah, talk to us a little bit about what that
- 24:47Speaker 6: looked like. I totally underestimated it. I showed up to
- 24:50Speaker 6: my first session with is like a water bottle was
- 24:53Speaker 6: I didn't even bring a fuel like fueling or like anything,
- 24:56Speaker 6: and I I was trying.
- 24:57Speaker 5: To play it so cool, but it was so hard.
- 24:59Speaker 6: Like I think it was an eighty minute run seventy
- 25:02Speaker 6: percent sixty five percent humidity the first time, and it
- 25:04Speaker 6: was so so hard, And I think it was just
- 25:07Speaker 6: more of like getting used to the discomfort.
- 25:09Speaker 5: Like for me, it's.
- 25:10Speaker 6: Humidity is just uncomfortable. I'm used to I'll take ninety
- 25:13Speaker 6: degree dry heat any day, but that was tough. So
- 25:17Speaker 6: I just did four sessions, increasing humidity by like five
- 25:20Speaker 6: percent to eight percent every time, got up to like eighty.
- 25:23Speaker 5: Percent eighty four percent.
- 25:25Speaker 6: But honestly, it was just a lot of like, Okay,
- 25:27Speaker 6: this is what it feels like to be this uncomfortable
- 25:29Speaker 6: and just being okay with that.
- 25:32Speaker 5: So yeah, that was that was huge for me. That
- 25:33Speaker 5: helped a lot.
- 25:34Speaker 4: And of note here, like you're saying that you maxed
- 25:37Speaker 4: out at like eighty maybe you touched eighty five, Like
- 25:40Speaker 4: that's not even the cusp of what we were dealing
- 25:43Speaker 4: with yesterday here. So I know that it may not
- 25:47Speaker 4: be easy necessarily to come to this place where we
- 25:50Speaker 4: have grace for things not going exactly how we'd hoped.
- 25:54Speaker 4: But I would say that considering the conditions, regardless of
- 25:59Speaker 4: where you fare in the pack, to finish how you
- 26:02Speaker 4: finished yesterday is absolutely remarkable and it's truly superhuman, Like
- 26:09Speaker 4: truly superhuman.
- 26:11Speaker 5: I want you.
- 26:12Speaker 4: Touched briefly on the crowds and I think that's like
- 26:14Speaker 4: something kind of funny to talk about you had a
- 26:15Speaker 4: warped experience running with someone from this country for a bit.
- 26:19Speaker 4: I myself ran the Tokyo Marathon last year, and it
- 26:22Speaker 4: was quite interesting, like the very different vibes of being
- 26:25Speaker 4: a New Yorker and having the New York Marathon versus
- 26:29Speaker 4: the Tokyo Marathon. What was interacting with the crowds like
- 26:31Speaker 4: for you yesterday, Erica.
- 26:34Speaker 1: It was I had heard similar things, just like comparing
- 26:38Speaker 1: like you know, a New York or a Boston to
- 26:42Speaker 1: typically Tokyo. But I think it was way better than
- 26:45Speaker 1: I expected. It was way louder. I mean, people were yelling.
- 26:49Speaker 1: They were yelling. It was much louder than like a
- 26:52Speaker 1: golf clap, and it I mean it felt like another
- 26:55Speaker 1: road race. Like they really really brought the energy yesterday,
- 26:58Speaker 1: which was like desperately needed. It was so tough out there,
- 27:02Speaker 1: and also just to have that many supporters out on
- 27:05Speaker 1: the course and that many people watching and cheering when
- 27:08Speaker 1: it was like obviously very tough to run, but even
- 27:11Speaker 1: just standing out there for a few minutes, I'm sure
- 27:13Speaker 1: it was like very difficult on the spectators. So it
- 27:16Speaker 1: was like they were also out there like giving a
- 27:19Speaker 1: great effort, and it took me quite a while to finish,
- 27:22Speaker 1: and there were still so many people out there cheering,
- 27:24Speaker 1: So like, I cannot thank the Tokyo crowds enough for
- 27:27Speaker 1: hanging out there for three hours.
- 27:29Speaker 4: The compassion that you have for the spectators is unnecessary.
- 27:35Speaker 5: I mean, we were having a good time.
- 27:36Speaker 4: It was it hot, Yes, Was it anything like what
- 27:39Speaker 4: you guys were dealing with?
- 27:40Speaker 3: Absolutely not.
- 27:41Speaker 4: How are the crowds for you, Susanna, especially at the
- 27:43Speaker 4: front of the path.
- 27:45Speaker 7: Yeah, it was exciting when I headed near the palace.
- 27:48Speaker 7: Initially it was really quiet and there was that golf
- 27:51Speaker 7: clap and that was just kind of an interesting, that
- 27:53Speaker 7: cultural moment. But then after I don't know, probably about
- 27:57Speaker 7: ten miles in it just it it was loud enough
- 28:01Speaker 7: that I realized that I wasn't going to be able
- 28:03Speaker 7: to rely on the crowds to kind of figure out
- 28:07Speaker 7: if people were approaching, because it was just loud enough
- 28:10Speaker 7: that it was like I'm having a hard time distinguishing
- 28:12Speaker 7: between like this is me and then there's like a
- 28:15Speaker 7: little bit of quiet and then I hear a roar
- 28:18Speaker 7: behind me.
- 28:19Speaker 2: So yeah, it was pretty consistent.
- 28:21Speaker 7: After about ten miles, at some point it was clear
- 28:24Speaker 7: that you know, through the power of Google or whatever,
- 28:28Speaker 7: somebody had figured out that I was a teacher, and
- 28:30Speaker 7: that was spreading through certain pockets, and so when I
- 28:32Speaker 7: would come by, i'd hear teacher, teacher, teachers, So that
- 28:37Speaker 7: was kind of fun.
- 28:39Speaker 4: Yeah, So when you take a step back and look
- 28:43Speaker 4: at the race yesterday as a whole, is there anything
- 28:47Speaker 4: or any one point that you think, reflecting on it,
- 28:51Speaker 4: that maybe you would have handled a little bit differently.
- 28:55Speaker 7: I think when the Julia who's there, Yeah, right, when
- 29:00Speaker 7: when she.
- 29:00Speaker 5: Passed me, I think.
- 29:01Speaker 7: I had a moment where I, you know, I had
- 29:05Speaker 7: to wonder as I was anticipating for miles, Okay, they're
- 29:08Speaker 7: gonna come, They're gonna catch you, and you need to, like,
- 29:11Speaker 7: you need to have a plan. You need to be
- 29:13Speaker 7: level headed about how you're gonna respond to it. Are
- 29:14Speaker 7: you gonna go with it or are you gonna like
- 29:17Speaker 7: assess depending on like how quickly they blow past you,
- 29:21Speaker 7: or are you just gonna like stay here because you
- 29:24Speaker 7: know that at this effort you can make it to
- 29:27Speaker 7: the finish. And so I was kind of wrestling with that,
- 29:32Speaker 7: and when Julia passed, I kind of latched onto her
- 29:35Speaker 7: for a bit and then was like, no, you know,
- 29:38Speaker 7: you like run your ace like you can. You can
- 29:40Speaker 7: hold on to this place, you can keep running this space.
- 29:43Speaker 7: And so looking back at that, like, you just wonder,
- 29:45Speaker 7: you know what if? Yeah, you just wonder what if?
- 29:51Speaker 4: So the question is, then what do you take from that?
- 29:54Speaker 4: Like having experienced that out there and wondering what if?
- 29:58Speaker 4: I think what I heard you say was this really
- 30:02Speaker 4: resounding moment of run your own race. Is that something
- 30:05Speaker 4: that's come to the forefront for you in marathon's past,
- 30:08Speaker 4: and do you think that's something that you're gonna take
- 30:10Speaker 4: with you as you move forward?
- 30:11Speaker 3: Now?
- 30:12Speaker 7: It has because I think that there were probably plenty
- 30:16Speaker 7: of people out on the course. I mean, I know
- 30:17Speaker 7: that there are people out on the course because they've
- 30:19Speaker 7: you know, I've gotten texts and messages since saying like
- 30:22Speaker 7: we were wondering what in the world she doing? And
- 30:25Speaker 7: I knew that I knew what I was doing. And
- 30:28Speaker 7: so it's nice when it actually works out, because you know,
- 30:33Speaker 7: there were people saying we were wondering what was she thinking?
- 30:37Speaker 7: And then we were like, oh wow, that was that
- 30:40Speaker 7: was neat And so you know, when it works, it
- 30:45Speaker 7: gives you a lot of confidence that like okay, like
- 30:47Speaker 7: six to your guns. Do what you do, what you
- 30:49Speaker 7: train for, like trust your instincts. When it doesn't, that's
- 30:53Speaker 7: you know, then you have to live with all the
- 30:56Speaker 7: doubts until the next marathon. And we don't get to
- 30:59Speaker 7: run many of these years or so I'm glad it
- 31:01Speaker 7: worked out and I'm excited for for the next one.
- 31:05Speaker 7: The next one is going to be fairly soon. I'm
- 31:08Speaker 7: running New York City Marathon, and so I think that,
- 31:11Speaker 7: I mean, I was all in on on World Champs.
- 31:13Speaker 7: I was not thinking about New York City in the
- 31:15Speaker 7: last thinking about anything except for the finish line the
- 31:17Speaker 7: last you know, ten k or so. But I hope
- 31:21Speaker 7: that I can line up at New York knowing that,
- 31:23Speaker 7: like I want to walk away with no regrets. And
- 31:25Speaker 7: I'm super super excited about how yesterday went. And my
- 31:30Speaker 7: coach said yesterday after the race, like if I had
- 31:31Speaker 7: told you yesterday, so you know, twenty four hours before
- 31:34Speaker 7: the race that you were gonna be four, you would
- 31:36Speaker 7: have been like stoked. And so he was like, we're not
- 31:39Speaker 7: going to wonder. We're not gonna like sit around and
- 31:42Speaker 7: stew about, like you know what if you've made a
- 31:44Speaker 7: different decision, and I think that that's that's good advice.
- 31:47Speaker 7: That said, seven weeks from today, I'll be lining up
- 31:50Speaker 7: in New York, and I think that I'll remember how
- 31:55Speaker 7: I'm feeling today and wondering what if. So I don't
- 31:58Speaker 7: want to I don't want to walk away from New
- 31:59Speaker 7: York one.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Yeah, no, shouldaw what Akuda is over here?
- 32:03Speaker 4: I was talking to Garrett from the Brooks team before
- 32:07Speaker 4: we started, and the realization and the reality of everything
- 32:10Speaker 4: is that, like I said earlier, every race isn't going
- 32:14Speaker 4: to be like the race, and each of you over
- 32:16Speaker 4: the last couple of years have had remarkable, outstanding, career
- 32:21Speaker 4: changing performances. So when you take a step back and
- 32:24Speaker 4: you think of it from that lens and you look
- 32:26Speaker 4: at it from that perspective, it's like, Okay, today, maybe
- 32:30Speaker 4: we sit here and some might say, well, that was
- 32:33Speaker 4: Susanna's race, but then a year ago, two years ago
- 32:37Speaker 4: Boston they were like, that's just as race, and then Houston,
- 32:41Speaker 4: that's Erica's race. Right, So when you take that step
- 32:45Speaker 4: back and you say, wow, look at what I'm capable of,
- 32:49Speaker 4: it kind of makes these moments again that don't go
- 32:52Speaker 4: as you'd hoped to one hundred percent feel a little
- 32:54Speaker 4: bit better. With that said, finding grace and moments that
- 32:59Speaker 4: don't go as you'd hoped isn't exactly the easiest thing, Erica,
- 33:04Speaker 4: What is for you the through line of how we
- 33:10Speaker 4: move forward from here? Because I know that, how does
- 33:15Speaker 4: the muscle strengthen you give it something to push up against?
- 33:17Speaker 4: How does your will strengthen you give it something to
- 33:19Speaker 4: push up against? Yesterday was a massive rep for your will.
- 33:25Speaker 4: So when you think about moving forward, what comes to mind?
- 33:29Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 33:30Speaker 1: I think, I mean that was the third marathon I finished.
- 33:34Speaker 1: So the inexperience around of applause.
- 33:37Speaker 4: For the third marathon being at the World Championships.
- 33:42Speaker 1: Yeah, when I like take a step back, my marathon
- 33:45Speaker 1: choices have been interesting and I haven't really given myself
- 33:49Speaker 1: like too many softballs. Like the Houston course was like
- 33:52Speaker 1: not particularly difficult, but it was like twenty degrees and
- 33:55Speaker 1: super windy in a day that a lot of people
- 33:58Speaker 1: that were in that race said, like was not a
- 34:00Speaker 1: PB day because it was below freezing and we had
- 34:03Speaker 1: this big headwind. And I was unbothered supposedly, So I
- 34:09Speaker 1: definitely am not bothered by the cold. But between like
- 34:11Speaker 1: the extreme cold now the extreme heat, and then Boston.
- 34:15Speaker 1: I just I would recommend someday. I feel like I've
- 34:19Speaker 1: still just have so so much to learn. But I've
- 34:21Speaker 1: learned a lot from each marathon, but they've all been
- 34:26Speaker 1: so different. I think, I mean, I don't have the
- 34:29Speaker 1: answer right this second, but I need to figure out
- 34:32Speaker 1: what I've learned from each and put them all together
- 34:35Speaker 1: into something I can use on any course, on any day,
- 34:40Speaker 1: in any marathon, because right now, like I learned a
- 34:43Speaker 1: lot about myself in every single race I've done, but
- 34:46Speaker 1: they've all been so different. It's like I don't know,
- 34:49Speaker 1: I don't know how to apply like this to that
- 34:51Speaker 1: because it either doesn't matter or it's so different. But
- 34:56Speaker 1: like you said, yesterday was like a huge win mentally.
- 34:59Speaker 1: I was talking to Does about it last night. Just
- 35:02Speaker 1: it's really really easy to kind of get sucked into
- 35:06Speaker 1: that like dnfing cycle, and I don't want to be
- 35:11Speaker 1: that person.
- 35:12Speaker 2: I like can't be that person.
- 35:13Speaker 1: It doesn't jive with the athlete I want to be,
- 35:17Speaker 1: and like the future I see for myself. You know,
- 35:19Speaker 1: it's a bump in the road, but I think I
- 35:22Speaker 1: conquered that and I think that'll be huge going forward.
- 35:25Speaker 1: So you know, the mind's there, and you just need
- 35:28Speaker 1: the mind and body there on the same day at
- 35:30Speaker 1: the same time. And I think that's what I'm taking
- 35:33Speaker 1: away from it.
- 35:34Speaker 3: Yeah, that's absolutely beautiful.
- 35:37Speaker 4: You touched on something that is very helpful and a
- 35:41Speaker 4: part of the process for money, which is the post
- 35:43Speaker 4: race personal debrief, the maybe sitting down, writing down, unpacking
- 35:49Speaker 4: with your coach, whatever that may include. Jess, what does
- 35:53Speaker 4: the post race debrief usually look like for you?
- 35:57Speaker 5: Uh, A lot different than used to.
- 36:01Speaker 6: My coach is super awesome and pretty chill, Like we
- 36:05Speaker 6: just exchange a few celebratory texts back and forth post race.
- 36:11Speaker 6: I think I used to be not the best at
- 36:13Speaker 6: like taking a beat and like celebrating.
- 36:15Speaker 5: Not just like not every race goes well, but.
- 36:18Speaker 6: Like the block, like you've dedicated three to four months
- 36:21Speaker 6: of like such hard training dedication. We're like training on
- 36:24Speaker 6: a treadmill in a box to get humidity.
- 36:26Speaker 5: We're like in the crappiest weather, Like.
- 36:29Speaker 6: It's you put so much into this, So I think,
- 36:31Speaker 6: no matter what, you have to take a beat and
- 36:33Speaker 6: just be like damn, I like I did that.
- 36:36Speaker 5: But there's always learning, you know, lessons from each race.
- 36:39Speaker 6: I'm sure, I'll take you know, the eleven and a
- 36:42Speaker 6: half hour flight home and like noodle on it.
- 36:44Speaker 5: But for right now, I'm like, I'm I'm kind of just.
- 36:46Speaker 6: Like post race cheer my teammates on mode and not
- 36:49Speaker 6: really thinking too much about it. But I think a
- 36:52Speaker 6: lot of reflection kind of comes when I'm like starting
- 36:54Speaker 6: to build back up again, Like I'll I'll think about
- 36:57Speaker 6: this whole experience, like when I'm finally doing easy jogs
- 37:00Speaker 6: in a few weeks getting.
- 37:01Speaker 5: Back into it.
- 37:03Speaker 6: But no, I think I'm just having so much fun
- 37:05Speaker 6: at this point in my career that it's like I
- 37:08Speaker 6: no matter if it went great or it wasn't the
- 37:10Speaker 6: best day, I take just a beat and then close
- 37:12Speaker 6: the chapter.
- 37:13Speaker 3: And move on easy jogs in a few weeks maybe three.
- 37:18Speaker 6: But but no, with what Eric has said, I think
- 37:21Speaker 6: you're gonna take so much like I take so much
- 37:23Speaker 6: confidence from the races where uh, it wasn't perfect and
- 37:26Speaker 6: I wasn't in that flow state, Like I had a
- 37:28Speaker 6: few races where I just especially my first marathon, I
- 37:32Speaker 6: think about that race gives me so much confidence because
- 37:34Speaker 6: everything went wrong and I You're going to be so
- 37:38Speaker 6: much stronger for today, Like finishing and doing it on
- 37:42Speaker 6: the stage like that is insane, and I both of
- 37:46Speaker 6: these guys, it's like.
- 37:47Speaker 5: We're just gonna keep trekking along Susanna.
- 37:50Speaker 6: It's lining up in seven weeks and we'll be cheering
- 37:52Speaker 6: for her there and then we've got teammates run in Chicago.
- 37:54Speaker 5: So Hamster wheel keeps going, Hamster.
- 37:57Speaker 3: Will keeps going.
- 37:58Speaker 4: I love what Erica mentioned also about having that opportunity
- 38:01Speaker 4: to sync with Dez, another Brooks athlete, on the experience
- 38:06Speaker 4: and kind of processing everything. What has it been like
- 38:09Speaker 4: for the three of you to have des in your corner,
- 38:12Speaker 4: someone that has seriously competed on the world stage many
- 38:15Speaker 4: times before.
- 38:18Speaker 6: I'll speak to Dez because she man, she's checked in
- 38:22Speaker 6: on me since I was a beast, Like my first
- 38:24Speaker 6: go at all this and you know, my career the
- 38:29Speaker 6: first time I went pro was in my mind pretty atrocious,
- 38:32Speaker 6: like I just could not stay healthy and it was
- 38:34Speaker 6: really hard for me.
- 38:35Speaker 5: And she always took a point there, like the time out.
- 38:38Speaker 6: Of her day, you know, while we were at altitude,
- 38:40Speaker 6: or she would just check in, send me a DM.
- 38:43Speaker 6: We weren't like texting buddies at that point, we weren't
- 38:46Speaker 6: on texting terms yet but then you know, I kind
- 38:48Speaker 6: of fell off the face of the earth and then
- 38:50Speaker 6: started running again, and she's she's still reached out. And
- 38:53Speaker 6: then Orlando is always a race where I like, I
- 38:56Speaker 6: always think of Does because there was like one hairpin
- 38:58Speaker 6: turn on that course, you know, looped course, and going
- 39:01Speaker 6: into the final.
- 39:02Speaker 5: Turn, she's like, you're you can do it.
- 39:04Speaker 6: Like she basically just said like you got this, like
- 39:07Speaker 6: you got it, and like shot, you know, pointed at
- 39:09Speaker 6: me from across the course, and I was just like damn, Like,
- 39:11Speaker 6: Does took time out of her own race when we're
- 39:14Speaker 6: all suffering to like just give me, shoot me some
- 39:16Speaker 6: positive words of encouragement, you know. And since then it's
- 39:19Speaker 6: just been like, really cool to have her in my corner.
- 39:22Speaker 4: She's I mean, she's a VET. So yeah, it's pretty awesome.
- 39:25Speaker 4: The finger guns will get you going for sure. Susanna,
- 39:28Speaker 4: what's your experience been like both with having Dez as
- 39:31Speaker 4: a mentor and maybe other mentors within the sport helping
- 39:34Speaker 4: you navigate your way forward?
- 39:36Speaker 7: Yeah, Does is great. I feel like she offers such
- 39:38Speaker 7: incredible perspective. When I was sharing with with Erka yesterday
- 39:43Speaker 7: after the race, that Mike. You know, after Budapest, which
- 39:47Speaker 7: did not go well for me two years agot the
- 39:48Speaker 7: World Championships, my coach had, you know, some some words
- 39:53Speaker 7: of encouragement that I think helped me kind of bounce
- 39:55Speaker 7: back and have a great day at Chicago the next
- 39:57Speaker 7: time I lined up for a marathon. And I think
- 40:00Speaker 7: Dez has been that for me several times, like when
- 40:03Speaker 7: race's hamn't gone well, She's just she's known the right
- 40:06Speaker 7: thing to say, and that comes from having been there.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's great.
- 40:11Speaker 4: Yeah, And again hearing you reiterate and kind of touch
- 40:15Speaker 4: back on that experience you had in Budapest.
- 40:17Speaker 3: When you hear that, what does that make you think?
- 40:20Speaker 3: Right now?
- 40:22Speaker 2: It makes me look forward to the next.
- 40:24Speaker 3: Championships, the next World Chips.
- 40:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 40:27Speaker 1: I mean bouncing back like that would be pretty sick.
- 40:30Speaker 1: So if that's the playbook, it is possible.
- 40:35Speaker 4: Hinted at the post race celebration, What did that look
- 40:39Speaker 4: like for the three of you? What happened immediately following,
- 40:42Speaker 4: and then what happened as the day went on, Eric,
- 40:44Speaker 4: I'll start with you.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Immediately following was a lot of stillness and a lot
- 40:50Speaker 1: of water.
- 40:51Speaker 2: I just like it was unwell, like very unwell.
- 40:56Speaker 5: Well, we first of all got naked and changed in
- 40:57Speaker 5: one together.
- 41:00Speaker 3: All athletes from all countries.
- 41:02Speaker 6: Just yeah, like here's your changing room and you walk
- 41:05Speaker 6: in and it's just an open room.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Yeah, they were prepared for people to be ill.
- 41:09Speaker 4: Yes, people are like screaming because things are chafed that
- 41:14Speaker 4: have never been changed before.
- 41:15Speaker 6: At that point, you don't care about anything. I'm like,
- 41:17Speaker 6: I shot get out of these clothes.
- 41:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 41:19Speaker 1: It was the most wow. I don't know what the
- 41:24Speaker 1: right word is for, like that marathon finish I mean,
- 41:28Speaker 1: correct me if I'm wrong, but the whole like the
- 41:31Speaker 1: finish line and there's not a ton of people like
- 41:34Speaker 1: greeting you when you finish after marathon and you're like
- 41:38Speaker 1: I'm going to faint, and then there was like not
- 41:41Speaker 1: a lot of people there. They but then there's like
- 41:43Speaker 1: someone who asked you if you're okay, and you're like
- 41:45Speaker 1: deliriously like yeah, and then they make you walk up
- 41:49Speaker 1: and down like three sets of stairs before you're allowed
- 41:51Speaker 1: to sit down. So after that, I went back to
- 41:57Speaker 1: the hotel and just sat down for a few hours,
- 42:00Speaker 1: and then eventually like ate food and we had like
- 42:03Speaker 1: a happy hour, which like I rallied for but then
- 42:06Speaker 1: after happy hour, I was like, I I'm not doing well.
- 42:11Speaker 1: But then we saw a shake shack and shake Shack
- 42:14Speaker 1: is my haven. So we had that and then I
- 42:17Speaker 1: went to bed.
- 42:17Speaker 3: What's the order?
- 42:21Speaker 1: The classic like single shack burger and then chicken bites,
- 42:25Speaker 1: no fries, and then small shake no fries.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Well, chicken bites instead of fries. Protein.
- 42:33Speaker 4: I understand them protein, but I'm thinking no water in
- 42:37Speaker 4: my body and eat so much salt.
- 42:39Speaker 3: Give it to me, but I appreciate it. I appreciate milkshake.
- 42:44Speaker 4: You said, yeah, oh good, Yeah good, Okay, what was
- 42:48Speaker 4: your post race?
- 42:49Speaker 6: Like Jess, I had eleven members in my family come out,
- 42:53Speaker 6: which is crazy. I think Tokyo was on a lot
- 42:55Speaker 6: of people's bucket list, so they came out. My niece
- 42:57Speaker 6: was their little little dotty, so we I think.
- 43:01Speaker 5: Well. We got back to the hotel room and I
- 43:03Speaker 5: had to brush my hair.
- 43:04Speaker 6: For about forty minutes just standing under the hot shower
- 43:07Speaker 6: with a whole bottle of conditioner. Yeah, I thought I
- 43:10Speaker 6: was gonna have a shaved head. Kind of showing up
- 43:13Speaker 6: today was that bad?
- 43:14Speaker 5: I was dressed out. I almost called Erica.
- 43:16Speaker 6: She's like don't brush it from the top, and Connor's like,
- 43:18Speaker 6: we got to brush it from the top, and like
- 43:19Speaker 6: Erica said not to brush.
- 43:21Speaker 5: It from the top.
- 43:21Speaker 3: I had actually like kind of envision.
- 43:25Speaker 6: I'm like Erica told me not to so once. Yeah,
- 43:28Speaker 6: and then we just kind of chilled. We went out.
- 43:30Speaker 6: I'll be hanging with the Brooks team tonight. But I
- 43:33Speaker 6: we finally got a reservation big enough to accommodate a
- 43:36Speaker 6: group of ten loud Americans and a baby. So I
- 43:38Speaker 6: went out with my family, had some Chinese, no, we
- 43:41Speaker 6: did barbecue and had some Japanese beer finally, and then
- 43:47Speaker 6: I went to the track, watched fifteen's and tens and
- 43:51Speaker 6: watched valwin again, finally got her World Championship title.
- 43:55Speaker 5: So it was it was a good night.
- 43:56Speaker 4: A moment of panic briefly went through my body when
- 43:59Speaker 4: you said you went to the I was like, why
- 44:02Speaker 4: this one's in the pool today.
- 44:03Speaker 5: Yeah, we're all.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Going to that one was in the pool yesterday to that.
- 44:08Speaker 3: Wild did you swim? You swim after the marathon yesterday.
- 44:12Speaker 5: Yeah, she's a little bit so talk to us.
- 44:14Speaker 3: About your post race, Susannah.
- 44:17Speaker 7: You know, I talked to my coach for a little
- 44:18Speaker 7: bit on the phone, so that was good. And then
- 44:22Speaker 7: we walked over to where Brooks. It was kind of
- 44:25Speaker 7: there was a little gathering after and I had a
- 44:29Speaker 7: little bit of lunch. I had some French fries. That
- 44:32Speaker 7: was key.
- 44:36Speaker 3: I could be your favorite.
- 44:37Speaker 7: Yeah okay, and then uh yeah we went back. Also,
- 44:44Speaker 7: you know, ripped out a good amount of hair trying
- 44:47Speaker 7: to get the tangles out. And yeah, I went to
- 44:52Speaker 7: the pool. It was lovely, felt good.
- 44:58Speaker 2: How much in the pool, like thirty for thirty minutes.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Yeah, everyone for those at home, everyone.
- 45:06Speaker 4: In the room looked at each other like one of
- 45:08Speaker 4: my why am I superhuman today?
- 45:11Speaker 7: Yeah, it was hard to find the clock, so it
- 45:13Speaker 7: might have been a little over, but yeah, it was.
- 45:16Speaker 7: I mean going to the pools here has been just
- 45:19Speaker 7: like a fascinating cultural experience because it's just so different
- 45:23Speaker 7: from at home, and it's like very consistent with the
- 45:26Speaker 7: things that you and that we've noticed kind of walking.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Around like very tidy, very quiet.
- 45:32Speaker 7: Everything is very quiet, even the lifeguards, like when there's
- 45:36Speaker 7: a problem, there's like no whistle blowing. There's like a
- 45:38Speaker 7: lot of like handwaving. So it's been Yeah, it's been cool.
- 45:45Speaker 7: And then we went back and yeah, I got ready
- 45:47Speaker 7: to go have drinks with the Brooks crew and my
- 45:51Speaker 7: aunt and uncle were in town out for Indian after
- 45:56Speaker 7: because I can say that I've never had Indian food
- 46:01Speaker 7: the day before a race. But I'm allergic to shellfish
- 46:05Speaker 7: and I don't eat pork, So trying to figure out
- 46:07Speaker 7: what I can eat here it's been an adventure. And
- 46:11Speaker 7: we discovered that cheese non which like had non with
- 46:15Speaker 7: cheese on it at home, but like it's baked into
- 46:18Speaker 7: the inside of it. It's basically like an inverted pizza.
- 46:20Speaker 7: It's incredible, Like every day leading up to the marathon,
- 46:25Speaker 7: I had some more of that last night, and yeah,
- 46:29Speaker 7: then I was Then I went to the stadium, saw
- 46:31Speaker 7: the tail end of the fifteen's, the the ten k
- 46:36Speaker 7: and then the hundreds and the long jump finals. So
- 46:40Speaker 7: it was an exciting night, a sweaty night at the track.
- 46:43Speaker 7: It was it was pretty steamy in the stadium, but
- 46:45Speaker 7: it was just a good day of celebrating and I'm
- 46:48Speaker 7: I'm excited to be home and you know, celebrate with
- 46:51Speaker 7: you know, the kids at school and the coach and
- 46:55Speaker 7: my coach coaches at George Mason University, and so that
- 46:57Speaker 7: the team had a watch party and the got a
- 47:00Speaker 7: whole bunch of texts from them. They can't wait to celebrate.
- 47:02Speaker 7: So yeah, I'm excited to celebrate with them too.
- 47:06Speaker 3: If I recall, is it back to school night next week?
- 47:09Speaker 2: Thursday night?
- 47:10Speaker 3: Okay?
- 47:10Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna be kind of compiling my thoughts
- 47:16Speaker 7: and slides and stuff on the flight on the way back,
- 47:19Speaker 7: I think, And yeah, I'm just not even sure what
- 47:23Speaker 7: to expect body clockwise for you know, being kind of
- 47:29Speaker 7: coherent on Thursday night.
- 47:30Speaker 2: But I'm gonna give it a go.
- 47:34Speaker 7: If I'm not super eloquent, I mean, I'm the math teacher,
- 47:36Speaker 7: not the language art teacher. So they can just roll
- 47:41Speaker 7: with it.
- 47:41Speaker 5: They will roll with it.
- 47:42Speaker 2: I'm sure.
- 47:42Speaker 4: I'm sure there's some grace to be had for sure.
- 47:46Speaker 4: You know, we started off this chat today talking about
- 47:49Speaker 4: what you all thought success would feel like in Tokyo.
- 47:54Speaker 4: Now that you have checked it off the list that
- 47:57Speaker 4: you all have ran at a World Championships, what would
- 48:02Speaker 4: you say was the most successful part of yesterday for you?
- 48:08Speaker 6: I would say like going for it and then just
- 48:11Speaker 6: sticking it out, hanging tough when it got really really hard.
- 48:16Speaker 6: But I think ultimately too is just really embracing like
- 48:19Speaker 6: the whole experience and being more curious and like excited
- 48:23Speaker 6: about what was going to happen, and not worry about
- 48:26Speaker 6: all of the things that were out of our control,
- 48:28Speaker 6: the weather, the you know, just being in a different
- 48:30Speaker 6: culture in a different country. I think, just yeah, full
- 48:35Speaker 6: sending and what is what's that saying? It's like shoot
- 48:38Speaker 6: for the moon even if you don't, Yeah, land amongst
- 48:41Speaker 6: the star's worst case scenario.
- 48:43Speaker 5: So I think I think I did that.
- 48:44Speaker 6: But honestly, just like watching Susannah have that day in
- 48:47Speaker 6: Redemption was probably top notch.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I don't know if it counts, but yeah,
- 48:52Speaker 1: what Jess said, like I will never forget like seeing
- 48:56Speaker 1: Susannah like twenty meters ahead of the race but looking
- 48:59Speaker 1: so unbelievably confident, Like it was like an insanely contagious
- 49:04Speaker 1: amount of confidence.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Like it looked so right, she looked so good.
- 49:08Speaker 1: I was just like I will never forget that picture,
- 49:11Speaker 1: Like it is a poster in my brain. The like
- 49:14Speaker 1: redemption arc she's been on since Budapest has been so
- 49:18Speaker 1: scary in like the best way, just like coming back
- 49:21Speaker 1: with such a vengeance, like give this girl two kneecaps and.
- 49:25Speaker 5: Like literally what I saw on the top of the world.
- 49:28Speaker 1: But yeah, no, seeing the comeback from you know, two
- 49:32Speaker 1: summers ago to Chicago to now just like the rise,
- 49:36Speaker 1: you know, like truly a phoenix, like in the flames. Like, oh,
- 49:41Speaker 1: it's been incredible and like just to see it come
- 49:43Speaker 1: full circle was definitely a highlight.
- 49:46Speaker 3: Susannah, how does that make you feel?
- 49:48Speaker 2: She's incredible.
- 49:49Speaker 7: It's been like just I mean, it's been the honor
- 49:51Speaker 7: of the life of a lifetime to you know, to
- 49:55Speaker 7: have the support of Brooks and to like you know,
- 49:57Speaker 7: have them you know, hands and pulled me into the
- 50:00Speaker 7: fold two years ago, and then like to have this
- 50:03Speaker 7: opportunity to go into a World Championships where like yeah, okay,
- 50:10Speaker 7: we're all Team USA, but there was just like a
- 50:12Speaker 7: deeper level of feeling like team camaraderie, this whole experience,
- 50:16Speaker 7: the whole build, the whole time being here, you know,
- 50:18Speaker 7: just like riding together, you know, to the practice track
- 50:22Speaker 7: and doing runs this past week and just I think
- 50:27Speaker 7: feeling like we had each other's backs out there. There
- 50:29Speaker 7: was a lot of communication yesterday morning. It's it's just
- 50:33Speaker 7: been incredible. I mean, like I I wasn't an All
- 50:37Speaker 7: American in college. I desperately wanted to contribute to my
- 50:42Speaker 7: college team. And I mean, I would like to think
- 50:45Speaker 7: that I did, like vibes wise, but like I'm like, I.
- 50:52Speaker 2: Like, yeah, I think I was. Maybe It's just.
- 50:55Speaker 7: Like I just took everything so seriously. I was like
- 50:59Speaker 7: maybe a little too intense. I didn't allow myself to
- 51:01Speaker 7: recover and you know, just really have fun with it.
- 51:05Speaker 7: So to be here and to feel like I had
- 51:07Speaker 7: the opportunity to contribute to this this thing that we
- 51:10Speaker 7: were doing as a Brooks trio was just super meaningful
- 51:14Speaker 7: to me. And it's just like, guess been an incredible
- 51:18Speaker 7: ride and stuff.
- 51:20Speaker 4: Knowing what you know now being in this seat here
- 51:23Speaker 4: in Tokyo today, when you think about the woman that
- 51:27Speaker 4: was walking away, maybe limping away from the marathon in Budapest,
- 51:34Speaker 4: what would you tell her now.
- 51:41Speaker 7: Like you won't regret trying to, you know, to get back.
- 51:45Speaker 7: I walked away desperately wanting another chance. We have a
- 51:48Speaker 7: magnet on our refrigerator at home that's like this little
- 51:52Speaker 7: it's like a half dollar size like porcelain thing. And
- 51:58Speaker 7: we walked into a like a gift shop on the
- 52:01Speaker 7: way back to the hotel and Budapest and my like
- 52:05Speaker 7: everything buffled around my knee and I fell into this
- 52:09Speaker 7: whole display of these porcelain magnets and so like we
- 52:12Speaker 7: bought the ones that we broke, and you know, I
- 52:17Speaker 7: my husband always jokes that, like, you know, it came
- 52:19Speaker 7: back a little bit chipped from from Budapest. So it
- 52:24Speaker 7: feels good to not be leaving Tokyo, you know, help
- 52:29Speaker 7: feeling health, of feeling good and you know, excited about
- 52:32Speaker 7: how much better this one went.
- 52:34Speaker 4: I love to hear it. We know, New York in
- 52:37Speaker 4: seven weeks for this one. What are you two looking
- 52:40Speaker 4: forward to now? And it does not have to.
- 52:42Speaker 3: Do with running.
- 52:44Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to honestly, I'll probably spend most of
- 52:47Speaker 1: my time off in the city.
- 52:49Speaker 2: So come on, yeah, over, I'll be down there this weekend.
- 52:53Speaker 3: Let's go. Okay, she's hanging out in New York, Jess,
- 52:57Speaker 3: what are you looking forward to?
- 52:58Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, it's like being home.
- 53:00Speaker 6: We moved early June, and I think I've slept in
- 53:03Speaker 6: my bed like fifteen nights since then with altitude training
- 53:07Speaker 6: and racing and everything, so just being home. And then
- 53:11Speaker 6: I have my fifteen year high school reunion in a
- 53:14Speaker 6: few weeks, so I plan that with a few friends,
- 53:17Speaker 6: which will be really fun, and then I might potentially
- 53:21Speaker 6: go to Chicago to cheer on some marathonors there.
- 53:25Speaker 5: Scope it out.
- 53:25Speaker 6: Maybe for next year, but yeah, I'm going to take
- 53:28Speaker 6: I have not really taken a beat.
- 53:29Speaker 5: Since Orlando, so I'm going to take a few weeks.
- 53:32Speaker 6: Yeah, just enjoy the fam and finally some some ninety
- 53:36Speaker 6: nine degree days in Phoenix.
- 53:37Speaker 4: So yeah, I know we're all looking forward to being
- 53:40Speaker 4: a little bit cooler than we are right now for sure. Well,
- 53:44Speaker 4: I am amazed and inspired by you and honored to
- 53:51Speaker 4: sit next to you. I can say, on behalf of
- 53:55Speaker 4: all of America, thank you, thank you, thank you. The
- 53:57Speaker 4: showing that we saw yesterday was truly like a once
- 54:01Speaker 4: in a lifetime thing. So congratulations to all three of
- 54:04Speaker 4: you for your stellar performances yesterday. And I know that
- 54:09Speaker 4: this is still just the beginning and there's so much
- 54:12Speaker 4: more good to be had. Thank you for sitting down
- 54:14Speaker 4: with us here. You know what we say on the show.
- 54:16Speaker 4: Another hurdle conquered to the Brooks family. Thanks for having us,
- 54:21Speaker 4: and ladies.
- 54:22Speaker 2: Thank you. ADI got too
