- 0:14Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily Abadi here bringing you another episode of
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hurdle Moment from Hurdle this week. As I've mentioned many
- 0:23Speaker 1: times so far in the last month or so, my
- 0:25Speaker 1: head is in a bazillion places because I can't believe
- 0:29Speaker 1: that I'm moving tomorrow. I'm gonna refrain from making the
- 0:34Speaker 1: intro to this episode all about how emotional I am
- 0:37Speaker 1: about this.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I think it's really starting to hit me.
- 0:40Speaker 1: There have been some things in the apartment that I've
- 0:42Speaker 1: kept as is just because I needed them to be
- 0:45Speaker 1: this way, like my desk that I sit at all
- 0:47Speaker 1: day every day and the stuff on the wallmost but
- 0:50Speaker 1: that ends today and everything comes down today, and I
- 0:54Speaker 1: feel so odd because the movers are packing me, which
- 0:58Speaker 1: is something I've never done before. I feel like this
- 1:00Speaker 1: is like the most adult thing ever. But because they
- 1:04Speaker 1: are packing me, like my life just feels completely unsettled
- 1:07Speaker 1: and there's stuff everywhere and it's.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Going to be okay. It's going to be okay. It's
- 1:11Speaker 2: going to be okay. Anyway.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Today's episode is not about the move. It's actually about
- 1:18Speaker 1: the idea of returning to quote unquote normal. It is
- 1:22Speaker 1: something that we are all navigating right now. Specifically, of course,
- 1:28Speaker 1: if you are living in the United States. As more
- 1:31Speaker 1: and more people we know are getting vaccinated and more
- 1:34Speaker 1: and more things are opening, I do want to say that,
- 1:38Speaker 1: of course, India and other areas of the world who
- 1:42Speaker 1: may not be in this place right now are in
- 1:45Speaker 1: my thoughts and my prayers. But when it comes to
- 1:49Speaker 1: what we are navigating here, when I am navigating here,
- 1:53Speaker 1: I understand that it can feel chaotic, and it can
- 1:56Speaker 1: feel stressful, and it can feel overwhelming. Me June feels
- 2:02Speaker 1: like twenty nineteen on the horizon. I have a trip
- 2:05Speaker 1: to Miami planned, and work travel planned and seeing friends
- 2:11Speaker 1: and my birthday and just things.
- 2:13Speaker 2: That this time last.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Year were not even remotely something that I could even conceptualize.
- 2:21Speaker 1: And so, like I said, it's a lot, and today's episode,
- 2:25Speaker 1: I'm going to talk to you about my best tips
- 2:29Speaker 1: for that return to normal, for easing back into the
- 2:32Speaker 1: swing of things, and that word their ease is really
- 2:36Speaker 1: really important. My goal first and foremost here to let
- 2:39Speaker 1: you know that if you do feel some kind of
- 2:41Speaker 1: way about things getting back to the way they are,
- 2:43Speaker 1: aside from just excited.
- 2:45Speaker 2: It's okay. You're not alone.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And the good news is that we can talk about
- 2:50Speaker 1: it and we can do hard things.
- 2:51Speaker 2: We can get through this together.
- 2:53Speaker 1: I'm going to keep this intro short and sweet this week,
- 2:55Speaker 1: but I do want to plug if you wanted to
- 2:58Speaker 1: come to the hurdle session I hosted this week regardless
- 3:01Speaker 1: of when you're listening to this.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Good news. So you think you.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Want to run a marathon is now live on the
- 3:06Speaker 1: Hurdle website. So if you want to learn about running
- 3:11Speaker 1: and racing and some tips and tricks to take your
- 3:15Speaker 1: training to the next level, I've got you covered with
- 3:18Speaker 1: the help of Lindsay and Amber from Brave Body Project.
- 3:21Speaker 1: A link to check out that on demand hurdle session
- 3:24Speaker 1: is in the show notes. Make sure you're following along
- 3:27Speaker 1: with Hurdle over at Hurdle Podcast on social media. I'm
- 3:30Speaker 1: over at emily a Body. Let's talk normalcy with that.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Let's get to hurdling. Life is always going to be
- 3:43Speaker 1: different after the COVID nineteen pandemic, and I think that
- 3:48Speaker 1: is kind of where I want to lead us off today,
- 3:52Speaker 1: is that we have collectively experienced this insane thing.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Although our experiences during the pandemic may have differed with
- 4:04Speaker 1: what we were doing with our careers and our personal life,
- 4:08Speaker 1: and how our families and friends were individually impacted by
- 4:12Speaker 1: the coronavirus. What I can safely say is that we
- 4:16Speaker 1: all have some sort of mutual understanding of the collective
- 4:21Speaker 1: trauma that we just went through. And so as we
- 4:26Speaker 1: use this sentence things getting back to normal, I want
- 4:30Speaker 1: you to have some grace with yourself. And we'll talk
- 4:32Speaker 1: about grace in just a second. That normal is going
- 4:35Speaker 1: to look different than it did before, and that is ohkay.
- 4:40Speaker 1: This is going to require an adjustment period. So when
- 4:43Speaker 1: it comes to getting back to it, the first piece
- 4:47Speaker 1: of advice that I want to offer y'all is process
- 4:50Speaker 1: what you've been through. Okay, Like I said, pandemics impacted
- 4:54Speaker 1: the lives of virtually everyone period, but each person has
- 4:59Speaker 1: their different set of experiences that they need to work
- 5:03Speaker 1: through going forward. I would highly highly recommend that if
- 5:08Speaker 1: you have not been either going to regular therapy or
- 5:12Speaker 1: making a journaling practice a part of your regular routine,
- 5:15Speaker 1: or even just opening up to your friends and loved
- 5:18Speaker 1: ones about where you're at, where your head is at,
- 5:21Speaker 1: that now is a really important time that you take
- 5:24Speaker 1: the time to do.
- 5:25Speaker 2: So.
- 5:26Speaker 1: It is so so important that we give this big
- 5:30Speaker 1: event some space. That we give this big event a
- 5:34Speaker 1: little bit of closure so that we can move forward
- 5:38Speaker 1: and feel hopefully like we're bookending this experience with some
- 5:41Speaker 1: solid takeaways and a good mindset going forward. My next
- 5:46Speaker 1: thought for you when it comes to returning to normal
- 5:49Speaker 1: is take small steps, follow your own journey, all right,
- 5:55Speaker 1: right now, there are certainly going to be different approaches
- 5:59Speaker 1: to how we move forward. Right Some individuals may be
- 6:03Speaker 1: based on geographic location. My brother lives in Florida. I'll
- 6:06Speaker 1: just say that may be living life like nothing ever changed,
- 6:11Speaker 1: and hey, to each their own. If you feel safe
- 6:14Speaker 1: doing that, if you want to make the choice to
- 6:16Speaker 1: do that, that's cool. If you are someone who is
- 6:19Speaker 1: a little bit more conservative, I just want to say
- 6:22Speaker 1: that you don't need to follow their roadmap. There is
- 6:25Speaker 1: no one shoving you to scratch the anxieties that may
- 6:30Speaker 1: have developed over the last year of spending more time
- 6:34Speaker 1: by yourself. Instead, what's important is that again you move
- 6:38Speaker 1: at your own pace and don't have any judgment about that.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I certainly still have anxiety being around large groups period.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I have to do what makes me comfortable instead of
- 6:52Speaker 1: what I feel like. I quote unquote should be doing.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I will say from my own personal experience that easing
- 6:58Speaker 1: into things and go going at my own pace has
- 7:01Speaker 1: really made me feel better about kind of picking up
- 7:04Speaker 1: where I left off in certain aspects. Whereas at the beginning,
- 7:07Speaker 1: when for example, running groups started to meet up again,
- 7:11Speaker 1: I didn't exactly feel super comfortable in that situation. Now,
- 7:14Speaker 1: as the time has gone on, and taking certain precautions
- 7:17Speaker 1: to make sure that I feel good in these circumstances,
- 7:20Speaker 1: I feel different in these circumstances. Don't let someone else
- 7:24Speaker 1: force you to do something you don't want to do
- 7:26Speaker 1: is basically the takeaway of that, And especially because from
- 7:29Speaker 1: an anxiety point of view, if you try to jump
- 7:31Speaker 1: back into like a mosh pit and you have been
- 7:34Speaker 1: on an island for the last fourteen months, that's going
- 7:38Speaker 1: to feel really overwhelming. So these small steps that I
- 7:41Speaker 1: am recommending these are just so you can listen to
- 7:46Speaker 1: what's going on inside your heart and move forward with
- 7:50Speaker 1: some grace and some optimism. Also here another tip, keep
- 7:54Speaker 1: what's worked. The last year gave us a lot of
- 7:57Speaker 1: time to prioritize things in a way that maybe we
- 8:00Speaker 1: didn't feel as though we had the time to do
- 8:03Speaker 1: so before that means there are probably aspects of your
- 8:07Speaker 1: routine that have really been working for you that you
- 8:11Speaker 1: now have the opportunity to carry over into the quote
- 8:16Speaker 1: unquote new normal. So if you were the kind of
- 8:18Speaker 1: person that started to take your mornings a little bit
- 8:21Speaker 1: slower over the pandemic and felt a lot of benefit
- 8:24Speaker 1: from that, be mindful of how you can incorporate some
- 8:26Speaker 1: of those same practices going forward. A lot of us,
- 8:30Speaker 1: despite the chaos, despite the trauma of the coronavirus, we're
- 8:35Speaker 1: able to find some special balance. Don't abandon practices that
- 8:39Speaker 1: had really been benefiting you just because you feel like
- 8:43Speaker 1: you're supposed to. You know, a girlfriend of mine was
- 8:45Speaker 1: chatting with me about a few of her girlfriends getting together,
- 8:50Speaker 1: and one of them just didn't feel comfortable with the
- 8:53Speaker 1: situation at hand. Hey, that's okay. What I think is
- 8:58Speaker 1: really important right now is that we have compassion for
- 9:00Speaker 1: one another as we make these adjustments, as we get
- 9:04Speaker 1: back to normal, and understand that it's going to be hard,
- 9:07Speaker 1: and that there are going to be sticking points, and
- 9:09Speaker 1: that we may have to pivot a little bit differently
- 9:12Speaker 1: than we did before.
- 9:13Speaker 2: But you can do it.
- 9:14Speaker 1: We can all do it, and again there's no need
- 9:17Speaker 1: to place harsh judgment on yourself or others based on
- 9:21Speaker 1: the how we go about it. On a financial note,
- 9:25Speaker 1: I know that I certainly cannot be the only person
- 9:28Speaker 1: having some anxiety about going from saving all of the
- 9:31Speaker 1: monies to spending. When I'm going out to dinners and
- 9:35Speaker 1: buying stuff, or this new apartment and just doing so
- 9:38Speaker 1: many things. It's going to have to require me to
- 9:43Speaker 1: shift a little bit. On that note when it comes
- 9:45Speaker 1: to finances, something that really helped me many moons ago
- 9:49Speaker 1: was setting aside separate accounts where that can be a
- 9:53Speaker 1: fund for a specific thing. So if money is giving
- 9:56Speaker 1: you a little bit of anxiety and you want to
- 9:59Speaker 1: save up to you maybe finally take a trip to
- 10:02Speaker 1: see friends or family for the first time in a while,
- 10:04Speaker 1: or perhaps you want a separate fund for just going
- 10:07Speaker 1: about your normal quote unquote social activities, open a separate
- 10:13Speaker 1: bank account. It is a great way not to feel
- 10:16Speaker 1: guilty about spending, and then you can budget exactly what
- 10:20Speaker 1: you want and contribute to that over time so it
- 10:23Speaker 1: doesn't feel mega overwhelming when you go to use that
- 10:27Speaker 1: amount of money in the future. And the last thing
- 10:29Speaker 1: I want to chime in on when it comes to
- 10:31Speaker 1: this week's hurdle moment. Hurdle moment we've all been kind
- 10:34Speaker 1: of laughing at, joking the media, social media, Instagram, Hawk
- 10:39Speaker 1: gir Al Summer, Right, So have some compassion for yourself,
- 10:44Speaker 1: for your body, for your wardrobe. Do not think that
- 10:48Speaker 1: you need to buy an entire new closet right now,
- 10:51Speaker 1: just like you don't need to judge yourself for how
- 10:53Speaker 1: you may look now versus two years ago. You just
- 10:57Speaker 1: handled a really hard thing. When you did it well,
- 11:01Speaker 1: You have survived your hardest days of the pandemic, right,
- 11:06Speaker 1: so be proud of you.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Have some grace with yourself.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Don't feel pressure to fit into some sort of a
- 11:12Speaker 1: mold for whatever you're seeing out there, but rather just
- 11:16Speaker 1: be grateful, Be proud of you for making it this far.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Be prepared to embrace the small moments going forward with
- 11:22Speaker 1: maybe even a little bit more gratitude and thankful for
- 11:26Speaker 1: all of the beautiful memories that are to come. Who
- 11:29Speaker 1: that's it for now. A return to normal on deck
- 11:32Speaker 1: is something that I know that we have all been
- 11:34Speaker 1: looking forward to for so so long. At Hurdle Podcast
- 11:38Speaker 1: at Emily a Body, another hurdle conquered.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time.
