- 0:00Hey, it's Marfita, and welcome back to the Living Deeply podcast.
- 0:04Today we're talking about something that has become extremely meaningful to
- 0:09me in my own spiritual practice, and that is connecting with spiritual gods and ancestors.
- 0:17For me, spirituality doesn't have to fit inside a religious box.
- 0:22I believe that I can explore spirituality in ways that feel authentic to me.
- 0:28We can honor our intuition We can pay attention to what we feel We can connect
- 0:33with people who came before us,
- 0:36And we can create practices that allow us to slow down enough To recognize guidance
- 0:42when it comes So today, I want to talk about some of the ways You can intentionally
- 0:47create space for connection with your ancestors,
- 0:50And your spiritual gods.
- 0:53It's important to start with intention because connection begins with intention.
- 0:59You don't need an elaborate ritual or ceremony or any expensive spiritual tools.
- 1:05Sometimes it can be as simple as sitting quietly and saying,
- 1:10I am open to connecting with the ancestors and gods who come to me with love,
- 1:16protection, wisdom, and good intentions.
- 1:20I personally think that boundaries matter spiritually Just as much as they matter everywhere else in life,
- 1:28You get to decide what kind of energy you welcome into your space You can be
- 1:33specific You can say that you only welcome guidance that is loving,
- 1:38protective, supportive And aligned with your well-being,
- 1:43Then sit quietly,
- 1:45Don't immediately start searching for something dramatic to happen Just be present.
- 1:51Create a space for your ancestors. You may want to create a small ancestral
- 1:57space or an altar in your home.
- 2:00It doesn't have to look like anybody else's. You might include photographs of
- 2:04family members who've passed away, candles, flowers, meaningful objects,
- 2:10jewelry, letters, or items that remind you of them.
- 2:14You can even place something there that they loved. Maybe your grandmother loved a particular flower.
- 2:20Maybe your grandfather always drank coffee. Maybe your sister had a favorite
- 2:25color, song, perfume, or snack.
- 2:29The point isn't perfection, it's remembrance. You're creating a physical space
- 2:34and place where you can intentionally honor the people who came before you.
- 2:39And sometimes simply sitting in that space can create a sense of closeness.
- 2:47Talk to them. Yes, you can talk to your ancestors out loud, in your mind,
- 2:54in a journal, while you're driving, while you're sitting outside,
- 2:58while you're cooking something that reminds you of them.
- 3:01You don't need a special script. You might say something like,
- 3:06I've been thinking about you. I miss you.
- 3:09I need some guidance right now. Help me see what I'm not seeing.
- 3:14Or even, I don't know exactly how to do this, but I'm here.
- 3:19Connection doesn't always have to be formal. Sometimes it's simply conversation.
- 3:25Pay attention to your intuition. One of the biggest parts of my own spiritual
- 3:30exploration has been learning to listen to my intuition.
- 3:35Sometimes you just know something. A thought arrives suddenly.
- 3:40You feel pulled towards something.
- 3:43You think about someone unexpectedly.
- 3:46You feel strongly that you should or shouldn't do something.
- 3:50Some people call those intuitive hits or intuitive downloads.
- 3:55The more distracted we are the harder it can be to notice them that's why quiet
- 4:00matters meditation can help nature can help,
- 4:05journaling can help music can help sitting outside without scrolling on your
- 4:11phone can't help give your mind enough space to hear what actually comes through.
- 4:18Notice repeating patterns. Sometimes guidance may feel subtle.
- 4:23You might notice a particular number repeatedly. A song might appear at exactly
- 4:29the moment you needed to hear it.
- 4:32You might repeatedly encounter an animal that has a significant personal significance to you.
- 4:39You might hear a name. You might remember a phrase.
- 4:43You may have an unusually vivid dream or experience a coincidence that feels
- 4:48deeply meaningful to you,
- 4:51You might have to force you don't have to force an interpretation immediately,
- 4:56Write it down That's something I recommend strongly keep a spiritual journey journal,
- 5:03Write down what happened what you were thinking beforehand What you felt in
- 5:08your body and what meaning came to you over time?
- 5:13You may begin realizing your own patterns.
- 5:16You can also connect through dreams.
- 5:19It can be a very important part of your spiritual practice. Before you go to
- 5:23sleep, you can intentionally invite connection.
- 5:27You can say something like, if there is guidance I need, I'm open to receiving
- 5:32it in a way I can understand.
- 5:35Keep a notebook beside your bed or record it in your phone.
- 5:40Wake up, write down whatever you remember before scrolling on your phone.
- 5:46Don't worry if the dream seems strange or fragmented at first Write it down
- 5:51anyway Sometimes meaning becomes clearer later on,
- 5:56You can use music Music can be an incredibly powerful tool There are songs that
- 6:03immediately take us back to people, places, and moments Sometimes a song can
- 6:08make someone feel close again,
- 6:10Create a playlist for your ancestor practice Include songs that your loved ones
- 6:16enjoyed Songs you associate with them Instrumental music that helps you meditate,
- 6:23Or music that simply helps you feel spiritually open Then listen without trying
- 6:28to control the experience Feel whatever comes.
- 6:33Spend time in nature Nature is one of the places where I personally feel deeply connected,
- 6:39There is something about getting outside, slowing down noticing animals,
- 6:44listening to birds, feeling the wind, watching trees move, or simply putting my feet on the ground,
- 6:53that quiets everything else.
- 6:55And when everything else gets quieter, I can hear myself more clearly.
- 7:00I can feel more clearly. I can notice more.
- 7:04You don't have to necessarily go somewhere beautiful or far away.
- 7:08Your background, backyard can become a safer space.
- 7:12A park can become a sacred space. Your porch can become a sacred space.
- 7:19Connection is about presence.
- 7:23Use tools if they resonate with you.
- 7:26Some people incorporate spiritual tools into their practice.
- 7:30That can include tarot cards, pendulums, dice, candles, crystals,
- 7:35meditation, automatic writing, or other divination practices.
- 7:41The tool isn't necessarily the relationship.
- 7:45It is simply a way of creating focus and guiding yourself for listening.
- 7:52Find what resonates with you Instead of feeling like you have to practice spirituality
- 7:55Exactly the way someone else does Your spiritual practice Should feel like yours.
- 8:02Learn about the people who came before you. Connecting with your ancestors can
- 8:07also be incredibly practical.
- 8:10Learn their names. Ask older relatives questions. Look through photographs.
- 8:17Learn where your family came from. Find out what your ancestors survived.
- 8:24Learn their stories. Cook their recipes. Listen to the music they listened to.
- 8:29Visit places connected to your family history when possible.
- 8:33Ancestor connection isn't about communicating with those, isn't only about communicating
- 8:39with those who passed. It's about remembering them.
- 8:43It's about understanding that your life didn't begin with you.
- 8:47There are stories behind you. There are people behind you. And there is resilience behind you.
- 8:55But don't force the connection. It's important.
- 8:59This is very important. You don't have to chase signs. You don't have to turn
- 9:03every coincidence into a message.
- 9:06You don't have to compare your experience with somebody else's.
- 9:10Someone else may have vivid dreams. Someone may have physical sensations.
- 9:14Someone may receive messages through music Someone else may simply experience
- 9:20a quiet sense of knowing Your experience doesn't have to look dramatic to be meaningful
- 9:26Allow your relationship with your spirituality to develop naturally.
- 9:32Trust your own spiritual path. One of the most freeing things I've learned in
- 9:37this is that I don't need someone else to approve how I experience spirituality.
- 9:42My spirituality belongs to me and yours belongs to you.
- 9:47You are allowed to explore, to ask questions, to change your beliefs.
- 9:53You're allowed to keep practices that bring you peace and release the practices that don't.
- 9:59And you are allowed to build a spiritual life that feels authentic instead of
- 10:05performing one that makes other people comfortable.
- 10:08Connecting with your ancestors and spiritual guides can ultimately become a practice of listening.
- 10:15Listening to your intention, listening to your history, listening to your body,
- 10:22listening to nature, listening to those quiet moments that are easy to miss when life gets loud.
- 10:30You don't have to have everything figured out.
- 10:32Sometimes you simply just need to create space, set the intention,
- 10:38and remain open to what comes.
