- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive, right?
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 135 and
- 0:20this is a little bit longer Psalm than some of the ones that
- 0:23we've had over the past couple of days.
- 0:25And so we're going to get right into it today and I am really
- 0:28looking forward to to go through this with you guys.
- 0:32Verse #1 Hallelujah. That is praise the Lord, praise
- 0:36the name of Yahweh. Give praise you servants of
- 0:40Yahweh who stand in the House of Yahweh, in the courts of the
- 0:44House of our God. Praise Yahweh, for Yahweh is
- 0:48good. Sing praise to his name for it
- 0:51is delightful. For Yahweh has chosen Jacob for
- 0:54himself, Israel as his treasured possession.
- 0:58For I know that Yahweh is great. Our Lord is greater than all
- 1:03gods. Yahweh does whatever He pleases
- 1:06in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all the depths.
- 1:10He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth.
- 1:13He makes lightning for the rain and brings the wind from his
- 1:18storehouses. He struck down the first born of
- 1:21Egypt, both people and animals. He sent signs and wonders
- 1:25against you, Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his officials.
- 1:28He struck down many nations and slaughtered mighty kings.
- 1:32Saihan, king of the Amorites, Ogg, king of Bashan and all the
- 1:36kings of Canaan. He gave their land as an
- 1:39inheritance and inheritance to his people.
- 1:42Israel, Yahweh, Your name endures forever your reputation.
- 1:47Yahweh through all generations, for Yahweh will vindicate His
- 1:51people and have compassion on His servants.
- 1:55The idols of the nations are of silver and gold made by human
- 1:59hands. They have mouths but cannot
- 2:01speak, eyes but cannot see. They have ears but cannot hear.
- 2:05Indeed, there is no breath in their mouths.
- 2:08Those who make them are just like them, as are all who trust
- 2:12in them. House of Israel bless Yahweh,
- 2:16House of Aaron bless Yahweh, House of Levi bless Yahweh.
- 2:20You who Revere Yahweh bless Yahweh.
- 2:24Blessed be Yahweh from Zion. He dwells in Jerusalem.
- 2:28Hallelujah. Well, I don't know if you guys
- 2:31noticed as I was reading through, there is a large
- 2:34importance in this Psalm place on the personal name of God,
- 2:39Yahweh the the Lord all it's it's all capital letters, kind
- 2:45of smaller caps. If you're looking at a portion
- 2:49of looking at a copy of Scripture right now.
- 2:52Also, by the way, I don't know if I've mentioned this before,
- 2:55if you're ever looking for a copy of like a translation of
- 3:00Scripture that has the name Yahweh in it, I will recommend
- 3:05to you the legacy standard Bible.
- 3:07I'm going to grab my one off my shelf here real quick, but the
- 3:12Legacy Standard Bible, it is very, very, very similar to the
- 3:17New American Standard Bible, if you've ever used that or the old
- 3:22American Standard version of 19/01 was I think the first
- 3:29translation that they had at that point.
- 3:32They put Jehovah for here, this name of the Lord.
- 3:36I believe they put Jehovah in all of those spots were Lord
- 3:40appeared. And then as they learned some
- 3:43more things about the kind of ancient languages and in
- 3:47particular ancient Hebrew, and they went, oh, actually there's
- 3:50not AJ in ancient Hebrew. It's all just AY, it's it's why
- 3:55we say Hallelujah instead of Hallelujah.
- 3:59If if that's hopeful for as you're thinking through the
- 4:01process that that just gave some light into how that is supposed
- 4:07to be set. But that has nothing to do with
- 4:11this Psalm other than Yahweh is this name, this personal name
- 4:15where God said you are my people.
- 4:16I am telling you my name that you would know who is saving
- 4:20you. It's the self existent one.
- 4:22It's the one who doesn't need you, but he wants you.
- 4:25He doesn't have to have you, but he wants a relationship with
- 4:29with you. So let's begin in verse #1 says
- 4:33Hallelujah, praise the name of Yahweh.
- 4:35Give praise you servants of Yahweh.
- 4:38This is obviously this is Psalms.
- 4:39This is the recurring theme. It is that God is worthy of us
- 4:44telling him how great he is, telling other people how great
- 4:47he is, that we would remind ourselves of how great he is and
- 4:52here praising the name of Yahweh.
- 4:54This is his fame, his reputation, his actions that we
- 5:00praise him. It's not that, if you will,
- 5:03whether you call him Yahweh, the Lord God, Jesus, Gyra, none of
- 5:09those things. You don't get special bonus
- 5:12spirituality. You don't get bonus grace for
- 5:16saying that particular name. It's not that that collection of
- 5:23it's not that that collection of sounds gives you more spiritual
- 5:27authority. Unfortunately, I've seen people
- 5:29sometimes misunderstand when the Bible talks about the name of
- 5:33Jesus or the name of Yahweh and they'll think that there is a
- 5:37unique spiritual power within like the syllables.
- 5:42And so they say, man, like, Gee, they'll, they'll, they'll even
- 5:46look at kind of pseudo medical or psychological things to say
- 5:53actually, like this word makes you breathe better and lowers
- 5:58your heart rate and, and stuff that is far, far, far outside of
- 6:03what scripture is actually trying to communicate.
- 6:05The name of God, the the worthiness of the name of Jesus,
- 6:10the fact that he has the name above every other name is not in
- 6:14reference to a collection of syllables, but it's in reference
- 6:17to His reputation. Or as scripture would tell us, a
- 6:21good name, A good reputation is rather to be chosen than great
- 6:26riches. And so it is here.
- 6:28Praise the reputation of Yahweh, then give praise you servants of
- 6:33Yahweh, and then verse 2, who stand in the House of Yahweh, in
- 6:37the courts of the House of our God.
- 6:39This is another thing, especially as we're progressing
- 6:42through especially book 5 of Psalms.
- 6:44I don't know if I saw this nearly as much in the first 3 or
- 6:484 books of Psalms, but there's a large importance that's been put
- 6:52from about Psalm 120 on about the House of God.
- 6:57Once, of course, the temple was built, that was a central point
- 7:01of worship. This was where we go when we
- 7:04want to exalt the Lord. And so where do we worship?
- 7:08Well, we worship Him everywhere, We praise Him everywhere.
- 7:11But there's a special thing about when we are gathering
- 7:15together to worship Him in the place where He has put His name,
- 7:17His house. And certainly we are the House
- 7:21of God, so may we praise them with our life every day.
- 7:24But then when we gather together as the people of God weekly on
- 7:27Sundays, most of the time other than this past Sunday where we
- 7:32had to meet on a Friday night for the service and then
- 7:35recorded that because of snow, but most of the time we meet on
- 7:39a Sunday to worship the Lord together.
- 7:41That is a wonderful thing. That is a pattern that is set up
- 7:44for us even in the Old Testament before Jesus came.
- 7:47And so may we participate in that even now.
- 7:51Verse #3 praise Yahweh, for Yahweh is good.
- 7:54Sing praise to His name, for it is delightful here, both this
- 7:59good and delightful. This is a pairing that we've
- 8:02seen even back in Psalm 130, three, that it is right to do
- 8:08and it is pleasant to do. I can tell you there's almost
- 8:10nothing that I enjoy more in this life than being able to
- 8:15sing with the people of God to Especially for me personally
- 8:19when I'm singing and the congregation is really really
- 8:24singing out like that is such a joy to experience.
- 8:31Sometimes that happens with older hymns.
- 8:34Not everyone you know, saying the same exact hymns growing up.
- 8:38So but like an it is well with my soul or the great is thy
- 8:43faithfulness or things like that that people really know well and
- 8:46they can sing out on honestly, even songs we sang 1A year or
- 8:51two ago, the song Another in the Fire that our church family just
- 8:55really sang out on it and kind of blew me away how passionate
- 8:59they were singing it. But there's nothing more
- 9:01beautiful than hearing God's people, especially singing in
- 9:04harmony about how great God is. So it is both the right thing to
- 9:08do to praise God, and it is a delightful thing to do.
- 9:12Verse #4 We sing to him, we we praise him.
- 9:15For Yahweh has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel as his treasured
- 9:21possession, because we have been chosen as his people.
- 9:27He was worthy of all of the praise that we can bring.
- 9:30If you believe in Jesus, you believe in Jesus as a result of
- 9:35the Holy Spirit's work in you. And I heard one great
- 9:38illustration that someone said it.
- 9:40It might have been Charles Spurgeon, might have been
- 9:42someone else that on the outside of the gates of heaven you can
- 9:46see the phrase written, whosoever will may come.
- 9:50You can read that from Romans 10/13.
- 9:54Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- 9:56So whosoever will may come. And as you enter the gates of
- 9:59the city and you look behind yourself at the gate, you see it
- 10:03written on the inside of the gate chosen from before the
- 10:06foundation of the world, that it's a wonderful marriage, that
- 10:10there is no one that will get to heaven that goes well, I didn't
- 10:13believe in Jesus, Why in the world am I here?
- 10:15And likewise there is no one that will ever be in hell that
- 10:18will say, but I chose Jesus, why am I here?
- 10:21It's that perfect marriage of what our will and what the will
- 10:28of God do together. It's it's the perfect wonder and
- 10:31mystery of election. But here, as God chose Jacob and
- 10:35Israel, God has chosen you and I for salvation through Christ
- 10:39Jesus. And if you have any questions
- 10:41about that, I'd encourage you to look at Ephesians one look at
- 10:45the sermon that he did on John six.
- 10:48Look at Second Peter chapter 1 and I think First Peter chapter
- 10:531 as well. It's a very talked about topic
- 10:57in Scripture and it is always meant as encouragement and joy
- 11:01for us. It's never used in a here's who
- 11:04you should evangelize. We're told to proclaim to all of
- 11:08the world and it is those that respond to that preaching.
- 11:13It's those that respond to the proclamation of Jesus as Savior
- 11:18and Lord. Those that respond to that we
- 11:20know are the elect they have chosen to walk in that election
- 11:27verse #5 For I know that Yahweh is great.
- 11:30Our Lord is greater than all gods.
- 11:33God is bigger, He's stronger, He's better in every way.
- 11:37Then certainly all of the false gods that people would worship.
- 11:40But the very real demonic powers of this world, the, you know,
- 11:47think of Satan and many, many others, God is greater than all
- 11:51of them. He's stronger, He's got better
- 11:53plans. He is able to do infinitely more
- 11:57than they can. And so we don't have to fear the
- 11:59demons. We don't have to fear the false
- 12:01gods or false worshippers. Instead, we know our God is
- 12:05greater, our God is stronger, Our God is higher than any
- 12:09other. In the words of the great hymn
- 12:11Our God from Chris Tomlin verse number six, Yahweh does whatever
- 12:15he pleases in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all the
- 12:18depths the gods of the nations were viewed as they're powerful
- 12:23within their sphere. So this God is the sky God.
- 12:27OK, well he has powers there, but he doesn't have power over
- 12:31the sea cause the sea is, you know, chaotic and it's got the
- 12:35giant sea Dragons and and the kind of like demonic figure
- 12:39Tiamat that's in there. And so they're bitter enemies
- 12:42will Scripture tells us, Psalms here tells us, well, no, God is
- 12:47so much better. He's not limited to 1 realm.
- 12:49He's not the God who only works in Israel.
- 12:53He's the God who works in Israel and he works in America and he
- 12:56works in Europe and he works over all of the oceans.
- 13:00And he's still God in the skies. And he's even, as we know now,
- 13:04the God who still operates even in the heavens, in where the the
- 13:09stars and rocket ships go in space and all of that.
- 13:14What a great God he is. He does whatever he pleases.
- 13:18He is completely soft. And that is a comfort to you and
- 13:21I because he has proclaimed his intentions.
- 13:24We can know that we are on his side, that we are beloved, that
- 13:28we are safe, that we have a home in heaven.
- 13:31He has not made it a mystery of how to enter into relationship
- 13:36with him. He could have made it hard to
- 13:38find, but he didn't. And so he is worthy to be
- 13:41praised #7 he causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the
- 13:45earth. He makes lightning for the rain
- 13:47and brings the wind from his storehouses.
- 13:49This is saying everything that exists, God is doing.
- 13:52God's not, you know, fighting against the storm.
- 13:55God bail. In order for any of this to
- 13:57happen, God just makes it happen.
- 13:59He's not a warring God against other false demons.
- 14:03Instead, he just accomplishes everything that needs to happen.
- 14:09Verses 8 through 12, he talks about the conquest of Egypt, the
- 14:13Amorite, Bashan and Canaan and the fact that God saved his
- 14:19people from attacks and oppression from slavery, from,
- 14:25you know, armies that came against Israel to murder them
- 14:29and to chase them down to drag to to drive them into the Red
- 14:33Sea for those nations that attacked Israel as they were
- 14:36wandering in the wilderness. All of that God defeated here.
- 14:41The victories that quote UN quote Israel found were not as a
- 14:47result of how great of a military power they were.
- 14:49It came as a result of how great their God was.
- 14:53Verse 13, Yahweh, your name endures forever your reputation.
- 14:57Yahweh through all generations says God, there's never going to
- 15:01come a time when we do not praise you.
- 15:03And now here 25129 hundred years later, we are still reading
- 15:09this. We are still proclaiming the
- 15:11ever enduring faithfulness and steadfastness of the reputation
- 15:16of God. Only now his reputation is only
- 15:19grown with time. And what a joy that that is
- 15:22first 14 for Yahweh will vindicate His people and have
- 15:25compassion on His servants. We need the compassion, the
- 15:29empathy of God and He shows it to us time and time and time
- 15:33again. As opposed to how long lasting
- 15:36and persevering and compassionate that God is versus
- 15:4015 through 18. The contrary picture is the
- 15:45idols like Baal. He says the idols of the nations
- 15:48are of silver and gold made by human hands.
- 15:51Their gods aren't real, they are just something that is made.
- 15:54It's just pretend says they have mouths but they can't speak,
- 15:58eyes but they can't see their ears but they can't hear, indeed
- 16:01there is no breath in their mouths.
- 16:03These idols cannot live. As opposed to Yahweh, the God of
- 16:06Israel, He does live verse 18 those who make them the make the
- 16:11idols are just like them as useless as the idols are those
- 16:16that espouse false idol worship, they are just as useless and he
- 16:21says as are all those who trust in them.
- 16:24Want your life to be useless or do you find your life currently
- 16:27to be useless? You might be trusting in false
- 16:32gods or false worship. You might be trusting in, maybe
- 16:35you baptize it in your 21st century mind that it's not
- 16:38worship. I just spend all of my time and
- 16:41attention and energy and finances on business or on
- 16:45sports or on even my family to the neglect of any worship of
- 16:51God. And so you would say, well, I
- 16:54don't worship these things, but you talk about it, you give
- 16:58financially to it. It takes up your time and your
- 17:02schedule. Well, that sounds like what
- 17:05worship entails, my friend. And so don't worship things,
- 17:09worship God alone, don't worship greed, don't worship immorality,
- 17:15don't worship pleasure. Instead worship God.
- 17:18And so then there's the call to Israel, to Aaron, to Levi, all
- 17:22of these heads of of the worship of God there in that place
- 17:28during that time to bless Yahweh.
- 17:30He says, you who Revere the Lord bless Yahweh.
- 17:33Blessed be Yahweh from Zion. He dwells in Jerusalem.
- 17:37Hallelujah, what a joy that we have a God who is worthy to be
- 17:42worshipped, worthy to be praised.
- 17:44May you and I bless him even today.
- 17:47Tell someone else how great God is.
- 17:50Thanks for tuning in. See you next episode in Psalm
- 17:52136, which is one of my favorites.
- 17:54I cannot wait.
