- 0:33I'm so drunk. Welcome back to maggots with a
- 0:42blunt penknife the Doctor Who cover free podcast.
- 0:45Wow. I did want to say maggots as
- 0:47well. We are here to talk about
- 0:52episode 3 of the green death. I am here with the marvelous
- 0:56Steven Alexander. Say, Hello, Steven.
- 0:59Well, hello, Steven. Hello, Steve.
- 1:06Stevens Niche Niche, you know how to say it?
- 1:12Nietzsche. Mmm.
- 1:15Good grief. I don't know.
- 1:18I don't know. I the doctor told me I wasn't.
- 1:20So I hope I'm not a fair enough, fair enough.
- 1:25Well, so we had a really interesting discussion in blue
- 1:29so to about the state of the environment and the probably
- 1:35inevitable. Direction.
- 1:36We are heading in and I would absolute.
- 1:39I want to pick that up with you in episode 4 because I think
- 1:42you've got more to say on the matter.
- 1:47In episode 3, something really really interesting happens and
- 1:51we'll skip into it as there's the second half of episode. 3 is
- 1:56a lot almost an unbroken run of like domestic relationship.
- 2:01Seems That's not your Norman classic.
- 2:07Who is it? No, that's very unusual.
- 2:11And it's also a great way to fill your six partner because
- 2:15it's interesting and it's entertaining and it draws the
- 2:19viewer in a way that running up and down.
- 2:21Corridors and getting locked up on the moon.
- 2:23For an episode, might not be quite as interesting.
- 2:26I'm looking at, you Frontier in space.
- 2:28Tell me you like front. Aaron space.
- 2:30Love front. I love for this place.
- 2:34Even if it is just them, getting locked up in prisons every
- 2:37episode and then escaping but it just does it so, well, you know,
- 2:41right, okay. Okay.
- 2:42No. No, you've come at me now with
- 2:44Frontier in space. So I've got three minutes.
- 2:48What's really interesting about that?
- 2:49Is it is? Yes.
- 2:51It's essentially the same set piece and that they are locked
- 2:54up and then get away and then looked up and then get away.
- 2:58But because they go to location to location.
- 3:01So that because they go to Earth and it go to the Moon then they
- 3:04goes to Konya. It paints this huge picture of
- 3:08what's happening in this corner of the Galaxy.
- 3:11Why is essentially telling exactly the same scene over and
- 3:13over again, so it's clever but there's many six pulses that go
- 3:18to as many planets or do try to do as many locations as Frontier
- 3:21in space and it's all the better for it.
- 3:24And in that you've got space walks and extra Cody and
- 3:27gunfights On the South Bank. It's lovely gradually.
- 3:30The 0 g in action. Good old We love Godly had a
- 3:35dialogue with maybe I would die. Okay, I gave him my biggest
- 3:39banana, but you would wouldn't you.
- 3:45It's followed that down quick. I'll tell you sorry.
- 3:51I'm sorry. I'm sorry afterwards.
- 3:53If you've come around there's a little bit now, you know you are
- 3:56you are No Sex. Please were British and survival
- 3:59asshole. You drop one about mushrooms and
- 4:01episode. While the don't think I didn't
- 4:06It was a good to say, I've probably got our first you are
- 4:09defending Frontier in space. I was, you know, I was going to
- 4:11say there's even space in Frontier in space, for I think
- 4:16he said, so for, but for extended dialogue saying there's
- 4:19no there's a doctor Master Joe Graham episode, isn't it?
- 4:22Weighs just a spaceship and it's wonderful.
- 4:25It's so good. What I was going to ask you is
- 4:28that the sort of the domestic angle to this.
- 4:30I know it's essential because we're writing out show So, it's
- 4:33allowing that relationship between her and the professor's
- 4:36deepen. Do you think this is an
- 4:38inevitable like consequence of having a recurring cast that we
- 4:44keep coming back to what the, the we have to have scenes with
- 4:49them to deal with them and then being written out or we'll just
- 4:53just just like extended character sings In general
- 4:57because, like, in let you know, in usual in classic.
- 4:59Oh, you, yeah, you go from story to story and that it's just
- 5:02between the regular. As in the Tardis.
- 5:04Yeah, there seems to take place. Where, as we keep coming back to
- 5:06work. We keep them out of the
- 5:07Brigadier and Yates of Benton. Yep, and the unit family, like
- 5:13it's like the rusty Davis here with Jackie and Mickey and
- 5:16things like that, you know, inevitably as those those
- 5:19relationships deepen over time. Yeah, I think also, the reason
- 5:26we keep seeing the reason we have these scenes is because the
- 5:30audience loved we loved the Brigadier, we love Well, we
- 5:33like, yeah, it's we love Benson. We love the doctor.
- 5:36We love Joe, and we love to spend time with them.
- 5:39And I think Barry. Letts loves them as well, and
- 5:41he's right too. And he's right to bring the back
- 5:43because it just makes it so. So relatable.
- 5:49Do you think it's so much fun? It happened for long enough and
- 5:53was dropped at the right point. I is this impossibility of
- 5:59imagining a companion carrying on longer than they did.
- 6:03Did like imagining joke Grand in the next series?
- 6:07I can imagine anyone Stirrup open, but it's only because, of
- 6:09course, upon of them. I can't imagine are driving like
- 6:13invasion of the dinosaurs like Sarah does.
- 6:15No, no Sarah brings a whole different energy to it.
- 6:20And I bet even the writing changes.
- 6:23Doesn't it? Even the, the way, the
- 6:25characters? I think the story changes so
- 6:29yes, it's is very different. And you know, it's nice.
- 6:33I'm sorry. This is all goodbye to them.
- 6:35This is a this one song. You know, this is the end of the
- 6:40classic. I mean, well, we've already have
- 6:41the end of the first unit area of because all that would be the
- 6:44time monster where you get the Brigadier the master and Joe.
- 6:47Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:49It's happened to they're all in that one.
- 6:51Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:52We're as Frontier in space. Obviously.
- 6:53You don't get unit and in here you don't get Get the master.
- 6:57Yeah, I'm sure the most is behind all this business with
- 7:01global chemicals, though. He's bound to turn up and show
- 7:04his hand before too long. Well, someone was pumping
- 7:08information into Stevens his head, you know, yeah.
- 7:12Hypnotism. That's a key traits of the last
- 7:14it's got to be one. Interesting, is that you say
- 7:16about the unit family? Interesting about this is is it
- 7:20establishes? We have the Brigadier but
- 7:22establishes all of the guest characters in the first three
- 7:25episodes. We don't see Yates invented
- 7:27until the latter half of the story, do we?
- 7:30Yeah. Yeah, I only is the Brigadier
- 7:33and his civvies which gives a it just makes the whole thing feel
- 7:36completely different. These just like their as as a
- 7:40civilian role than Melissa in this Brigadier wrong.
- 7:42Stevie's. Love you smoking on a cigar
- 7:45guzzling down, whiskey, eating his corn and pretending it's
- 7:49beef. Oh, well, that's a class thing.
- 7:51You see? Because the real owner - yeah.
- 7:53Well, we'll get, we'll get there when we get to it, but it's
- 7:56okay. Well, let's skip into this, you
- 7:59know, unusual episode 3 and see what we find.
- 8:05Let's go. Oh, five, four, three, two, one.
- 8:11Let's go. Clicking play.
- 8:14There we go. Oh, I forgot where we left off.
- 8:17It's been so long. It's been a whole day since we
- 8:20last. Watch this.
- 8:22I'm sure there's something going on with my goats, giant maggots.
- 8:25How the fuck did I forget that? Okay.
- 8:29Is there, is this like the quintessential 70s Doctor Who
- 8:33Cliffhanger? Well, they completely randomly
- 8:39get sorted by magnets in a way that actually they couldn't
- 8:41possibly happen. But yeah, in terms of it being a
- 8:45memorable moment that stuck in the public Consciousness.
- 8:49Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:50Well people Always talk about but people who always talk about
- 8:54the one with the giant maggots, don't they are indeed.
- 8:58I don't know II. Don't think anyone's ever said.
- 9:00Oh, I remember that but then then it was on bbc2 in the 90s,
- 9:04wasn't it worth? Yeah.
- 9:06I remember watching this as flowers.
- 9:08I was transfixed and I was desperate to see more John
- 9:11poetry as well. Yeah.
- 9:13On the time because we'd had a few vhsl and then this this came
- 9:17out actually on the Telly was on a Sunday, wasn't it was It.
- 9:21We don't want it. Was it the BBC to repeat?
- 9:24Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:27I thought it was on the clock because they did, they did
- 9:33double bills and they started with a bird.
- 9:35We're here in the solarians killed it off.
- 9:37Basically, what? So do tonight and they didn't
- 9:43know, I've got a question for you about the job who we are as
- 9:49a whole. And I know I went there and I
- 9:51God bless, very different question.
- 9:53And that is traditionally I think fan that General fan
- 9:58consensus. Is it started out very strong in
- 10:02serious? Season 7.
- 10:05Yeah. And calm season 11.
- 10:07It's looking a bit tired and that it kind of lost its way as
- 10:11it went along. Now.
- 10:12I don't agree with that opinion at all.
- 10:15I think season 10 is actually my favorite pieces and I do
- 10:19re-season 11 as well. What?
- 10:21You think? The tone changes quite a lot,
- 10:26doesn't it? I mean, that that is undeniable.
- 10:28And for people who like their because, I like all kinds of
- 10:32doctor. All right, serious.
- 10:33Grown-up talk to you. And I like fun Doctor Who and I
- 10:37think the Pertwee era makes this a cardinal sin of going from
- 10:41being very serious. It's do watching in a bit of
- 10:45itself and then just becomes a jolly old wrong with crazy
- 10:48people running around in psychedelic costumes.
- 10:52You know just like nificent. Are you knocking on season 7?
- 10:55Then I love season 7. I love the tone and the
- 10:59atmosphere of it. But you know, I don't.
- 11:05I also like the other the other approach.
- 11:08I like the we get Bo. I like the we get Jon Pertwee
- 11:11doing is serious drama with this small hair.
- 11:14Yeah, the small hair. And then later on he gets the
- 11:16huge hair and it's like yeah, we're having a bit of fun.
- 11:19Now, Capaldi card have an original idea because he Exactly
- 11:23the same Journey. Didn't he hair-wise?
- 11:24At least? Yeah, but that's one of the
- 11:27things I love about him. Oh my word.
- 11:29Okay. I'll talk to you about overly
- 11:31ambitious effects earlier. Look at this.
- 11:34Yeah, yeah. Yeah, all of that was like, that
- 11:36was like my freezer that time crawling with what in real life
- 11:50or in this. Yeah, my goodness.
- 11:51Yeah, absolutely. No, because we had to watch
- 11:56school. We have to watch footage of a
- 11:58Maga like sucking blood, you know where they were.
- 12:04I would put them on the wounds and the maggot would suck out
- 12:07the infection and all the blood. Oh, it was and they will and
- 12:11they were all like fat and red and nasty afterwards.
- 12:14Oh my God, it just was, oh, I can't remember where I read
- 12:18this. It might have been doing the
- 12:19extras for this, but I'm a good Breeze through it arse, and
- 12:25that's so that it can continue eating, get his face right in
- 12:28the food and carry on eating and not have to worry about
- 12:31breathing because it reads through its back end.
- 12:32Yes. It was on the comments.
- 12:34You know, on the production notes of this, that is the first
- 12:37time that someone's mentioned, an arse on this commentary,
- 12:39where I literally am speechless. I have nothing to say to that
- 12:43good. Okay,
- 13:02that's true. She was she was asking.
- 13:04Or in the time where I went, she went to that great spider.
- 13:09Well to take a slightly okay, pushing it kind of Freudian
- 13:15perspective on this sort of theory and looking at parallels
- 13:17between Planet the spiders and the green death here.
- 13:20So we have the green death, where the maggots represents the
- 13:23male phallus. And then we have Planet.
- 13:25The spiders with a spider in some sense represents the female
- 13:29genitalia. And so you've got that kind of
- 13:32male and female mix which is that's just bollocks, isn't it?
- 13:35Is that bollocks? I don't know.
- 13:36It's super interesting. I've never heard of it.
- 13:42Just leads me to believe that Barrel X is far more interested
- 13:45in penises and vaginas. And I previously, 400 everyone
- 13:50in television. I mean why all the cows Barry
- 13:54Letts was like, a very stable creative force during this time,
- 13:59and I think you can see it across the era and it is hugely
- 14:05competent. Like, I don't think there are
- 14:07many areas of Doctor Who You can say, as a whole they're very
- 14:10competent television, always very watchable.
- 14:14And I know that as a writer, I think he's Wittier than people
- 14:19give him credit. Oh, we see, it's always a
- 14:23pleasure to like in this era. I think some of the stuff he
- 14:27wrote later when you get the ghost of Ben's face, Paradise of
- 14:31death island of death. Did you read that one?
- 14:34Oh, no. But I did love that.
- 14:40I want the last thing they did together.
- 14:41The last with the road together, with Terrance, dicks and Barry.
- 14:44Let's was called The Deadly Ryu. I bet, I right Justin Richards,
- 14:50impose that title upon them. But but I do think there's an
- 14:57energy to his dialogue when there's a naturalism to it as
- 15:00well. And weirdly enough, the one
- 15:02story where that's completely absent.
- 15:04It's the time on Star where no one talks naturalistically at
- 15:08all, but all the other stories, I think there's plenty of
- 15:11naturalistic dialogue in the demons in this and in Planet of
- 15:15the spiders as well. Yeah, you know, there's a lot of
- 15:19a lot of people say on with television things like the magic
- 15:22roundabout in the prisoner and they say, oh they must have been
- 15:24on drugs when they wrote this. When clearly if you're on drugs,
- 15:28you never to get get a television program written or
- 15:30Matthew to. I think they probably we're
- 15:33alone drugs when they did the time monster.
- 15:35Well Barry Letts I would be if I was wowed.
- 16:07And it was about it was about a year before he died and and I
- 16:12said to him, you know, we've really enjoyed her and me it's
- 16:14fantastic. Love it.
- 16:15We're looking forward to, you know, I hopefully you'll get to
- 16:18do the next the next section and we'd love it.
- 16:20If you got on and I'd love to, I'd love to have heard him talk
- 16:23about doing the classic cereals and the Dickens are the
- 16:26patient's we would later on, but and then he just said, no.
- 16:30Well, I don't think that's going to be another one now and the
- 16:33wife and just look after each other.
- 16:35Oh, it's just That's all right. You know, I got a friend right
- 16:42who adores, very less so much and thinks that he's such a, you
- 16:47know, like a balancing force that he stopped in life moments.
- 16:52And it says, what would Barry? Let's do a good plan.
- 16:57Oh here. We have Jeremy, thought about to
- 17:00speak to you about speak to the Brigadier.
- 17:02And what is it was a good size of the Brigadier is, no, you
- 17:05can't have your national insurance card back.
- 17:07What? Excited about the green party,
- 17:09getting in all the liberal rule. Well, go with liberals STP.
- 17:14I can never remember. Don't you know what the green
- 17:16pie got in him Brian, didn't they do?
- 17:19This has been invited. It's possible.
- 17:21Yeah, down south. They've got, they've got a
- 17:24foothold a toehold but he says in the commentary Barry Letts
- 17:27that this was a, you know, a deliberate suggestion that the
- 17:30Liberals will get it in the seventies.
- 17:33I mean, I was ever the case or it was ever going to be the
- 17:36case, but it Thinking on his part.
- 17:39Yeah, Norman Scott. Put a stop to that.
- 17:41Didn't he? Do you remember a very English
- 17:43Scandal Joe? What the rusty?
- 17:45Davis one? Yeah, my God, freaking amazing.
- 17:49What a great piece of drama. That was.
- 17:52That's it. That's it.
- 17:53That's this guy. Anyway, yes, jolly good, um, but
- 17:57very different, very different version in that one though.
- 18:00I have to say, then Rusty Davis. It was going to be worth it.
- 18:03Oh, well, he brought and then we shall bloody hell, so, I just
- 18:06wanted to talk about Also and how the Brigadier is part of the
- 18:10system here. And oh my God, I'm sorry.
- 18:13I thought you were talking about the TV show class and I want to
- 18:17talk about that. Please don't talk about that.
- 18:19Okay, sorry, the class system, the class system off, you go
- 18:22little sister. So what is it?
- 18:25It's sort of the upper working class.
- 18:27The managerial class that the Brigadier just sits in nicely
- 18:30and he's part of that club and he goes, he goes to all the
- 18:33clubs and speaks to all that. He has the cigars and the
- 18:36whiskey with the switch. Stevens and stuff.
- 18:38And this is just part of that set.
- 18:40Isn't it? Yeah.
- 18:41In what's very much. Isn't there an inference as well
- 18:43though? Earlier on, in charge of holies
- 18:45time that the doctor wrong, sort of law is getting into your
- 18:49system. I will tubby, I said, in the
- 18:52club now, do you think that the Third Doctor during his Exile on
- 19:00Earth? Wendy was wormed his way into
- 19:02the corridors of power and did go to these clubs and have
- 19:05whines. How's it going her way?
- 19:08Yeah, he was a conservative foreign for I'll tell you, that
- 19:11least doctor. Yeah.
- 19:13Yeah. Yeah, he joined the
- 19:14establishment right away. Look at him and they are the
- 19:17Daleks. He's well at home.
- 19:18In Our Stars is seller as me guzzling down.
- 19:21Wine and cheese. Yeah, but he still manages to be
- 19:24a rebel, doesn't he still manages to turn things on their
- 19:27head? And he's quite happy to call
- 19:29that bullshit. Well, I can't quite
- 19:32controversial now. That would be impossible but the
- 19:50concerns and attitudes in the way they view life.
- 19:53I think Lee does more harm than it does good.
- 19:56And I do agree with that. And I do think, you know, each
- 20:01party's sort of ethics and and the They're trying to push the
- 20:08country. It's very different.
- 20:10However, I do feel and I as I'm getting older, I'm getting more
- 20:13cynical about it. Whichever party is in there.
- 20:17They'll take from the people in one arm and they'll give to them
- 20:20with the other. And they do about as much good
- 20:22as each other regardless, as to what what their opinions are as
- 20:25to how things should be. Yeah.
- 20:28It's a bit messy. That's what I'm saying.
- 20:29It's a little bit messy and they all make good choices and we'll
- 20:32make crap choices. I think when labor getting they
- 20:36tend to stern warning of the north.
- 20:39I think that's the main difference.
- 20:40Obviously, you can I just say this is a doctor who story.
- 20:43Yeah, that is encouraging you and I to talk about politics
- 20:47environmentalism the phallic monsters and Jon Pertwee.
- 20:52I mean, it's got everything. Well, this just things I worry
- 20:55about all the time. I've got cooked up for six
- 20:57episodes. Oh my.
- 20:58Oh my, oh, my concern support. Is it going to come out you
- 21:01worried about fight monsters all the time.
- 21:03Well, actually, there is a growing Concerned.
- 21:05Did you see that? That masking evolution of the
- 21:08Daleks? Oh, hi all what o the sick
- 21:11mollusk Jesus Christ. Oh, very good growing concern.
- 21:18It gives a new meaning to the term wet willy than it is right.
- 21:27Now. What's going on the green death?
- 21:28So they're just kind of big dick.
- 21:30Just crawled up a big shelf and be rescued by this guy here.
- 21:35And now they're going to flush this flush.
- 21:37The shaft with green goop. What's has excising?
- 21:41Oh my God. Yes, Twitter made very good.
- 21:59Use of that, clip, and misappropriated it several times
- 22:03for various things turning up in the tubes to terrify called
- 22:05Gladys. It's very good to have a look at
- 22:08that. I think Joe is cuddling up to
- 22:11the doctor here, which is lovely to see.
- 22:14I voted against that. So, yeah, but like, she's like
- 22:17she's survived a near-death experience in the mine shaft.
- 22:20Then climbed down then, you know, lost the put their her
- 22:24companion in the tunnels and then been menaced by giant
- 22:27maggots. I think if she wants to play the
- 22:31victim at this point, I would be cuddling up to John poetry.
- 22:34That's what I'm trying to say. Yeah.
- 22:36Yeah. It's a pretty harrowing
- 22:38experience, actually. Just, I mean, like, have you
- 22:40ever been down a mine shaft? And also really, really?
- 22:48Yeah, there's no way I can phrase.
- 22:50That is their location where they have done mining where
- 22:55you've had to go down W of stairs or a lift to get into an
- 22:58underground location. Use you.
- 23:03Now, you see precisely how this podcast, what you have to be
- 23:05terribly specific and within the confines of that.
- 23:09Struggle. The answer is no, I have not.
- 23:13Have you been Have you had a look down?
- 23:16Wookie hole? I don't know.
- 23:18Some people that have been to wikiHow.
- 23:19Why haven't I been there? Jump into.
- 23:22You? Haven't even been down a Wookie
- 23:23hole. I just don't understand.
- 23:24And I would absolutely take the seidman from behind as well.
- 23:28I'm telling you. Have you looked up your to The
- 23:31Gorge? You'll get worse than that,
- 23:34Michael. You are.
- 23:39Anyway, but yeah, regular Falls being played right now and he
- 23:43seems quite perturbed by that. Yeah, the brain scanner.
- 23:48There's obviously someone behind this.
- 23:49I keep saying that all justly look ill, poor chap Steve-O.
- 24:09For absolute joy to give an actor later on where he's going.
- 24:12Bubba. Bubba?
- 24:14Bubba. Bubba.
- 24:15All right. Look, good.
- 24:16You're the most fun computer. We've ever had.
- 24:18Any remember votan. Oh, yeah.
- 24:22What did he say? That's about it.
- 24:29This is a very personable chatty computer.
- 24:33There's the one in the invasion. That just goes click open, does
- 24:36just kick that foreign one in underwear.
- 24:39Weld. I mean she's got a lovely voice,
- 24:41but Yeah, she don't get out very much.
- 24:44Oh, this is, this is really scary because they've made him
- 24:47want to commit suicide. Yeah.
- 24:49Yeah. Well if there's a modern office,
- 24:53if somebody commits suicide in your office, it would probably
- 24:55be closed for a month. Alright, so I don't think that
- 24:59actually that was that small to move and having in commit
- 25:01suicide on the grounds as a bit dim as well.
- 25:04I don't think you're doing Dark Water.
- 25:07When we're I said to you about, what is like the what?
- 25:10How far can you push? Push a family show.
- 25:13Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:14Now like somewhere. It's a you know, an adult
- 25:18committing suicide is is a step too far.
- 25:21Yeah, that's redefined. Now ever since I experienced a
- 25:25few episodes of The Tomorrow People of brick box.
- 25:28Okay, I watch an episode called if they should Peter Davison in
- 25:32this crazy wig and like gold pants, right?
- 25:36Yes, where everyone was talking like, wild West's and hey slug.
- 25:40A bug. Was very strange but there was a
- 25:43sequence, right in a greengrocers where Pete Davidson
- 25:47shot, someone in the stomach, in the middle of this comedy scene,
- 25:51and blood was flat. I don't figure The Tomorrow.
- 25:53People was for children, right? It wasn't for a family audience.
- 25:57Yeah. So yeah, that's this is all
- 26:01episode. And you've got, oh God, there's
- 26:03so much shit going on in man, for Emily.
- 26:04But well, when he saw you tomorrow, people V girls, the
- 26:07point I'm trying to make is I think standards were just
- 26:10different back then, I think I think they figured kids could
- 26:13handle a bit more because you wouldn't have that sequence in a
- 26:16kids show now of something being shot and blood coming out of
- 26:19their stomach in the middle of a comedy.
- 26:21See, and I don't think you'd have a scene of people
- 26:23committing suicide in like the Sarah Jane Adventures and you
- 26:27certainly wouldn't have anyone with a knife flick knives, know
- 26:32if it's a fairly common in this kind of.
- 26:37So, do you think, you think the term family audience meant
- 26:39something very different in the 70s?
- 26:41Does now is just different. It's different standards and
- 26:47they were preoccupied with different things.
- 26:50So I think all the nice stuff got bad because people really
- 26:52getting stabbed and he's pretty horrendous.
- 26:55So yeah that was just wanted to draw attention to it would
- 26:59obviously be different or draw attention to Joe's dressing.
- 27:01This scene. She's like throughout that her
- 27:05time on the show. She's dressed like very very
- 27:08much in a kind of childlike kind of way.
- 27:12And for Joe, this is a very mature, grown-up dress.
- 27:15Yeah, which is another subtle indication that she's getting
- 27:18ready to move on. She looks older.
- 27:20Yeah, this seems you just in any other.
- 27:22Doesn't she this whole sequence? Steve.
- 27:25I think it's gorgeous. I fire people really like, rip
- 27:28up this sequence and say, oh, it's too much.
- 27:31There was a bunch of hippies are all artistic.
- 27:34Why the hell not? And it's just a lovely kind of
- 27:37community feel you. Dumped our regulars in there.
- 27:40They're having a Lovely mail. This feels this feels like the
- 27:44new series to me. Like there's a strong family.
- 27:47Feel to this that I, yes, I'll find a bit intoxicating.
- 27:52That's exactly the right sort of.
- 27:53We're putting it as well because it is, they're building a
- 27:55family, even with it Courtney as the uncle not quite fitting in.
- 28:03Yeah, I do. I mean, looking for father
- 28:05figures in children's, he got the brother and sister in cliff
- 28:08and Joe dad. The doctor is the father.
- 28:11Figure. Of course, the Brigadier, the
- 28:14ankles. So, is the, Brigadier the uncle?
- 28:18I might be the other way to do, you know, they're the senior
- 28:21members of the family, aren't they?
- 28:23And then see what the laughing face on a shooting on her
- 28:26whistle? I love the bit later on.
- 28:28When the brigadier's guide beef. It is beef.
- 28:32It's just like that. It's fungus.
- 28:36So you love it. Okay.
- 28:36So it takes a lot of confidence to to switch tones mid-scene.
- 28:43This thing. Does it beautifully?
- 28:44So they were all laugh. They're all having fun.
- 28:46They're talking about going on this great adventure.
- 28:48And then the doctor comes in and punches it with the news of but
- 28:52Steph and suddenly is very solemn.
- 28:55Yeah. Yeah, that's a really and it
- 28:57gives the scene a bit more of a flow and an energy and it just
- 29:02and it seems to work really well.
- 29:03I don't know. I don't know quite how it
- 29:05manages. It just seems to get it right.
- 29:07I don't really know how many but some they captured something in
- 29:12this story. However, they've captured in the
- 29:15car. Erica terms is it's beguiling, I
- 29:18think. Oh, I just go.
- 29:21Sorry, briefly coming back to that scene.
- 29:23Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you've been as
- 29:26overdressed for dinner as the Brigadier is with the whole
- 29:30wheel Community? Generally not?
- 29:34But that's, you know, I'm a manager at my work and I don't
- 29:37ever wear a shirt. So like I do generally very
- 29:40underdressed. Why have you?
- 29:43Oh, no, it's just a thing, isn't it?
- 29:45Just thought he looks like. Yeah, but you don't think that's
- 29:50a class thing as well. Like a visual thing that he's
- 29:52all buttoned up and they're all very relaxed.
- 29:55Definitely. Definitely.
- 29:56Yeah, he's definitely showing that he dresses for dinner and a
- 29:59bow tie. And if it's turned up in in
- 30:02whatever they're wearing, you know, Steve what is occurring
- 30:06right now? I feel as if I'm at the
- 30:08beginning of a pool movie. Where at where at firelight, you
- 30:13know, everyone's gone to bed. Ed, I'm going to tell you off
- 30:17again because Joe, do you know, sometimes, people like have
- 30:21tender scenes in episodes of various television programs that
- 30:24do not necessarily lead on to pornographic things happen.
- 30:27Okay, you now. All right.
- 30:29Hang on. If the doctor did not get
- 30:31involved, something would have occurred here.
- 30:33They would have might have at least had a cuddly bit.
- 30:36Yeah. I'm look, he feels guilty.
- 30:38As soon as he walks in that he's interrupted them.
- 30:41The 90's and look on the doctors face though in a minute.
- 30:45When Count the same. Yeah, but don't you?
- 30:48The doctor is he realizes, he's redundant, doesn't he realizes
- 30:53that Jo's moving on it. So I'll write and he tries to,
- 30:56he goes look. I've got the crystal as if to
- 30:58like, you know, look at my crystal.
- 31:00Joe. Stop looking at his Crystal.
- 31:02Look at mine, you know, he's trying to entice her and she's
- 31:08not interested anymore. Hi, it's really soft.
- 31:10Breaking. Absolutely not interested in
- 31:13better be this 3 in the universe.
- 31:15She's she's interested in what's going on at home.
- 31:18She's interested in. Well, yeah, but then this kind
- 31:22of happens to people, as well, at a certain age.
- 31:25They lose interest in Doctor, Who in stock, kick interested in
- 31:28members of the opposite sex. I thought, I what you're talkin
- 31:31about my it happens to some people.
- 31:35Sometimes I've heard it. I mean I can just say this to
- 31:39you. Now, you can perfectly balance.
- 31:41Those two things very well. Alright.
- 31:45Yes, it is possible. Yeah, it can be done.
- 31:48He's there. Okay.
- 31:50I think I'm trying to say this is another cracking Cliffhanger.
- 31:54I'll crack it. The as the egg cracks.
- 31:57This is another terrific Cliffhanger here and I love the
- 32:00fact that it ends on a POV shot of a maggot.
- 32:06Yes, isn't it? Isn't it?
- 32:07Ironic? In a Freudian kind of way that
- 32:09the soon as Joe discovered sex. She did not get attacked by
- 32:13giant bag enormous Market. CSO shot of it.
- 32:17They're kind of squelching across the floor.
- 32:19That's not too bad. Is it the way?
- 32:22It works really? Well?
- 32:23In this sequence doesn't look at the weight.
- 32:24Will it spots are and it goes up and goes all there's dinner.
- 32:30Do you think the script actually said POV shot?
- 32:32Maggot or That's Mike? We Brian just being inventive
- 32:35but it's Gotta Be him being inventive.
- 32:39I think the script of what we just say, I'm the magnet
- 32:41advances or towards jokes theme music.
- 32:45Um, I we so we got a tiny bit of time.
- 32:48Before we head out of this episode.
- 32:51I want to ask you because this is the point where, you know, we
- 32:56had at the beginning, Joe showing an interest in
- 33:01environmentalism. And here is where we kind of
- 33:05realize. Okay.
- 33:05She's going by, she's not interested.
- 33:09If the table is free anymore. Is this the best companion?
- 33:15Archer story. In the old series.
- 33:19Yes, I think so. I think the new series is quite
- 33:23a few to challenge it, although, I don't, I all none of them are
- 33:28quite right. Not at all.
- 33:30I don't know. What one thing is.
- 33:32Interesting is I thought, the way Ryan leaves, I thought he
- 33:36was going to leave because of what he'd seen in often 55 and
- 33:41because that fear comes back to him in the fingers in your ear
- 33:45one, and he's worried about the Drake's come back to him as a
- 33:48knight. Now.
- 33:49I thought the ending was going to leave because he was
- 33:51interested environmental issues like a slight.
- 33:53Shame that that's not quite way left because more preoccupied
- 33:56with Earth than he was with travelling.
- 33:58With the doctor was a lot lot better than than people give it
- 34:02credit though. Him like choosing.
- 34:05You know, what? Actually I've got priorities on
- 34:08Earth. I'm going to stay here and deal
- 34:10with them. Like, that's way more
- 34:12interesting. I think unbelievable than other.
- 34:14No, I'm off in a Flying Diner on the eve of my death.
- 34:17F. Yes, Channel rights out,
- 34:22companions better than Martha and I think that's inarguable
- 34:27Steve General, Rhys Pisa. That's Peter.
- 34:30Chibnall rights. People better than OK.
- 34:33I think that's, that's the thing.
- 34:35Okay. So any other sort of the future,
- 34:37so any other, so in the old series are in and Barbara are
- 34:42but then our but no but yeah, but it's not seated all the way
- 34:45through the story. Like this is Where you been to
- 34:48the moon? No, we're getting close.
- 34:52London. 1965 Victoria. I think Victoria has a good
- 35:00final story. It's seeded like this, isn't it?
- 35:03It's very much part of the fabric of our final story that
- 35:06she's got us. Another six, poles to work.
- 35:09You've got time to explore the fact that she might be leaving.
- 35:13Well, there's not much gets the way you like it.
- 35:18The least effective departure and thats Sarah Jane way is just
- 35:21dumped at the end of the story. Yes.
- 35:24I also like that. I like that she is she's dumped
- 35:29and it's not fair and she should have stayed on but yeah, she
- 35:34just gets you ejected. Dumped on ceremony was really
- 35:36Ever Fall because life does that to you sometimes, doesn't it?
- 35:39Oh boy. That's it.
- 35:41Wow. No, not bad there.
- 35:43Jesus Christ, but is that I mean, that's so effective in
- 35:47that, it It's so sudden that they can't pick that up in
- 35:50school reunions, you know, and yes, have a conversation.
- 35:58But in terms of Joe leaving in this story.
- 36:02I think in terms of what emotional resonance, this is the
- 36:06best companion departure and in terms of like tearing your heart
- 36:10out in the last episode. I don't think it's ever better
- 36:13to. Oh, we'll get there.
- 36:15It's going to be it's going to be a killer bring the hankies.
