- 0:01Speaker 1: Thank you. Happy Monday, everybody. Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us. Morgan Scali Press Conference
- 0:38Speaker 1: in an hour. Ari Temkin coming on in 30 minutes
- 0:42Speaker 1: or so. Jam-packed show here on a Monday. Oh, we're
- 0:46Speaker 1: going to have a little bit of fun.
- 0:47Speaker 2: 877-353-0700.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I always love to hear from you, so please, if
- 0:49Speaker 1: you can, shoot me a text, shoot me a call.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Tell me what you loved, what you hated about the
- 1:00Speaker 1: weekend with college football, game day in town, with Houston
- 1:06Speaker 1: coming to town. I did see a lot of Houstonites
- 1:08Speaker 1: sort of wandering around Salt Lake City. Hopefully you did
- 1:13Speaker 1: the right thing and said, welcome to Utah. I hope
- 1:16Speaker 1: you enjoy your time here, and I hope that our
- 1:18Speaker 1: team beats your team.
- 1:19Speaker 2: 877-353-0700 at.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Realocsports.com. We learned a lot about this Utah football team
- 1:31Speaker 1: on Saturday night. If you go back to preseason conversations
- 1:37Speaker 1: on this show, we talked about this game specifically being
- 1:42Speaker 1: maybe the first time that Utah has to answer real
- 1:45Speaker 1: questions about who they are. Now, I will admit, I
- 1:50Speaker 1: thought that there was going to be more bumps and
- 1:52Speaker 1: bruises and problems along the way in getting to this game.
- 1:57Speaker 1: But I thought that this game was going to be
- 1:59Speaker 1: the ultimate litmus test for Utah football. And that if
- 2:03Speaker 1: there had been a loss on the schedule previous to
- 2:06Speaker 1: this one, I would have said, oh yeah, you know,
- 2:09Speaker 1: that's first year head coach, first year coordinator kind of
- 2:13Speaker 1: a problem. That's five new offensive linemen kind of a problem.
- 2:18Speaker 1: That's this call should have gone that way. That ball
- 2:22Speaker 1: should have bounced this way. because the schedule laid out
- 2:26Speaker 1: in such a friendly manner for the university of Utah
- 2:28Speaker 1: that we thought that this team would get to a
- 2:30Speaker 1: point halfway through the season where they looked really darn good.
- 2:34Speaker 1: And we would still be wondering, is Utah really good
- 2:38Speaker 1: at stand up salt Lake city? Cause you've got a
- 2:40Speaker 1: damn good football team on the hill in Morgan Scali's
- 2:44Speaker 1: first year. You are a justifiable top 10 ranked team.
- 2:50Speaker 1: You have now players on both sides of the ball
- 2:53Speaker 1: answering the call when it is time to make a play,
- 2:56Speaker 1: when it is time to dig down deep and either
- 3:00Speaker 1: go out and win a football game or get on
- 3:04Speaker 1: the bus and cry, your team, your coaches, rise to
- 3:09Speaker 1: the occasion. And they did it, most importantly this time,
- 3:13Speaker 1: they did it against a top 15 football team in Houston.
- 3:17Speaker 1: That is a dang good squad over there. They did
- 3:21Speaker 1: it against one of the better quarterbacks in the conference.
- 3:25Speaker 1: They did it by holding a team that rushes for
- 3:28Speaker 1: 220 yards a game, the same total that Utah generates
- 3:33Speaker 1: on their season average. You held them under 100 yards rushing.
- 3:38Speaker 1: And most importantly, when the chips were down and you
- 3:43Speaker 1: have now punted the ball back to a guy like
- 3:47Speaker 1: Connor Wegman and that offense... You had your defense make
- 3:52Speaker 1: the play necessary to salt this game away. An absolutely
- 4:00Speaker 1: pristine play call by Colton Swan. I mean, as good
- 4:05Speaker 1: as it gets. Beautiful. Morgan Scali in his post-game press
- 4:11Speaker 1: conference called it the unblockable blitz. I've seen the zoomed-in screenshots.
- 4:16Speaker 1: We've seen the replay over and over again. I happened
- 4:20Speaker 1: to be standing in the north end zone in the
- 4:23Speaker 1: new seats when it happened, and it could not have
- 4:28Speaker 1: gone more perfectly. James, you've got the call. James Peterson
- 4:33Speaker 1: behind the glass. You've got the play call. Play it
- 4:35Speaker 1: for the people. Four wide receivers in the pattern for
- 4:38Speaker 1: Houston on first down and 10. Sam for the running back.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Keep an eye on him out of the backfield. Utah
- 4:44Speaker 1: rushing four. Now they'll bring five.
- 4:46Speaker 3: He's hit.
- 4:47Speaker 2: The ball is out.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Utah's got it. Utah's got it. Utah's got it. They
- 4:53Speaker 1: sacked him. They stripped him. They recovered the fumble. It
- 4:58Speaker 1: was Jackson Fetty.
- 5:04Speaker 4: What a time to finally get home with a blitz.
- 5:07Speaker 1: The Utah defense does it again.
- 5:12Speaker 5: First and 10 Utah at the Houston 10-yard line.
- 5:19Speaker 1: That's a great call by the voice of the Utes,
- 5:21Speaker 1: Bill Riley. That's a great call by Bill Riley. That
- 5:26Speaker 1: was a camera-shaking, Richter-scale reading reaction from Rice Eccles Stadium.
- 5:32Speaker 1: That was one of those moments that we are all
- 5:35Speaker 1: going to remember for a very long time. Blackout game,
- 5:40Speaker 1: college game day in town, Pat McAfee beef started in
- 5:43Speaker 1: the morning. Double birds up to you, Pat McAfee. And
- 5:46Speaker 1: that moment right there when Houston has an opportunity to
- 5:53Speaker 1: has a great quarterback, has an offense that really has
- 5:57Speaker 1: done a lot of impressive things this year, has scored
- 5:59Speaker 1: 39 points a game. Houston, they get to go down,
- 6:04Speaker 1: potentially score, potentially get a two-point conversion.
- 6:08Speaker 3: No.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Jackson Benny eliminates, eviscerates, vaporizes Connor Wegman, ball loose. Jai
- 6:20Speaker 1: Moy is already there. He's already had his man beat.
- 6:23Speaker 1: That's important here because a loose ball there. Yes, it's
- 6:26Speaker 1: still a huge play, but if Houston and an offensive
- 6:28Speaker 1: lineman falls back on that thing, who knows what happens?
- 6:32Speaker 1: Jai has already beat his man. He is there and
- 6:35Speaker 1: he falls right on it. Next play, Utah scores. Let's go, baby.
- 6:41Speaker 1: It was gorgeous. It was perfection. It was absolutely incredible.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And the play call, you can watch the replay over
- 6:53Speaker 1: and over again. I, I wish we actually had more
- 6:55Speaker 1: angles on it. The, the all 22, when I can
- 7:00Speaker 1: get some access to the all 22, that is going
- 7:02Speaker 1: to be the one that tells the real story of it,
- 7:04Speaker 1: because there's a timing and Morgan calls it an unblockable blitz,
- 7:08Speaker 1: even though it has been blocked as he joked post game,
- 7:12Speaker 1: because So there's five guys pre-snap. There's five guys on
- 7:17Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage, okay? Five Utes on the line
- 7:22Speaker 1: of scrimmage. I made sure that I texted our guy
- 7:25Speaker 1: Jeff Schwartz about this because you want to make sure
- 7:29Speaker 1: that your run game coordinator, your offensive line stuff is
- 7:32Speaker 1: dialed in when you're talking about something like this. Because
- 7:36Speaker 1: the center guard combination on the left side of Houston's line,
- 7:40Speaker 1: the right side of Utah's defense, They can't be right
- 7:44Speaker 1: in this situation. That's why the blitz is so effective,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and that's why it was such a perfect time for
- 7:49Speaker 1: Colton to call this up, for Coach Swan to get
- 7:52Speaker 1: into his bag and call it there, and for Cyrus Polu,
- 7:56Speaker 1: who was blitzing, and for Jackson Benny, who was blitzing,
- 7:59Speaker 1: to time it so it was like a bang-bang, right?
- 8:01Speaker 1: It is jab-cross. It is the running back who is
- 8:06Speaker 1: also responsible for whatever rusher comes on that side of
- 8:09Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage. Offensive line sees five. They say,
- 8:13Speaker 1: we've got these five, okay? We are responsible for the
- 8:16Speaker 1: five guys, the first threat. John Uhal, all the way
- 8:20Speaker 1: on the left side of Utah's formation, drops. So now
- 8:24Speaker 1: the right side of your Houston offensive line has de-tackle, nobody, nobody.
- 8:33Speaker 1: And they're like, ah, they're looking, they're, they're, they're scanning
- 8:37Speaker 1: their side of the field, not knowing the chaos that
- 8:40Speaker 1: is unfolding a fraction of a second later on the
- 8:43Speaker 1: left side of the offensive line, because they've got D
- 8:46Speaker 1: tackle D and linebacker and safety. And the poor guys just,
- 8:54Speaker 1: there's nothing for them. They can't do it. The running
- 8:56Speaker 1: back cannot be right in that situation, because if he sees,
- 9:01Speaker 1: if his peripheral vision is gives him the picture of
- 9:04Speaker 1: Jackson Benny coming through, and he goes to Jackson Benny.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Guess who hits the quarterback? Cyrus Polu. So he does
- 9:11Speaker 1: the right thing. He takes the first man, first other
- 9:14Speaker 1: colored jersey. That's who he's got to hit. And Jackson
- 9:17Speaker 1: Benny is there a half step later. And Connor Wegman
- 9:23Speaker 1: doesn't see anything coming. Ball goes flying. Oh, it was beautiful.
- 9:27Speaker 1: It was gorgeous. I'm standing right behind it. I had
- 9:31Speaker 1: some friends who got to be... They were in the
- 9:34Speaker 1: trial run of those North End Zone seats, which, by
- 9:39Speaker 1: the way, absolutely sick seats. Oh, they had a little
- 9:44Speaker 1: dry run. They did a dry run on Saturday night
- 9:47Speaker 1: at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Were they... actually something built there? Yes. Okay.
- 9:52Speaker 1: It's exactly what it's going to be. Gotcha. The food service,
- 9:56Speaker 1: everything was exactly what it's going to be. The monitors
- 9:59Speaker 1: with the the game on the screen was all hooked up.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Those are phenomenal seats.
- 10:04Speaker 6: Those are really, so you were able to stand in
- 10:06Speaker 6: your usual spot and kind of watch the game with
- 10:08Speaker 6: your friends.
- 10:09Speaker 1: That's amazing. It was perfect. And it just so happened that,
- 10:12Speaker 1: you know, because you can walk down to the field
- 10:15Speaker 1: level from the press box and, at exactly that time
- 10:18Speaker 1: left in the game. They're like, they make the announcement
- 10:20Speaker 1: in the press box. All right, media can go down
- 10:22Speaker 1: on the field. So I go down, everyone else goes
- 10:24Speaker 1: to the elevator. I go down the staircase because we're
- 10:28Speaker 1: going down people. There's nothing wrong with going down some stairs,
- 10:31Speaker 1: go down, say hello to the friends standing there at
- 10:35Speaker 1: their seats. And that's when that play happens. And it
- 10:38Speaker 1: just was, I mean, there's that vibration, that power, that
- 10:43Speaker 1: of the crowd at rice Eccles stadium. And by the way,
- 10:45Speaker 1: the broadcast, I didn't see this until after the broadcast
- 10:48Speaker 1: did an incredible job of cutting to the blacked out crowd.
- 10:53Speaker 1: And the camera was shaking all crazy. And it gave,
- 10:56Speaker 1: if you were there, you know, if you were there,
- 11:00Speaker 1: you felt it, you heard it, you saw it. And
- 11:02Speaker 1: if you were sitting at home and there's, it's a
- 11:04Speaker 1: great place to watch a game sitting at home. you
- 11:08Speaker 1: became part of the 51 plus thousand at rice echo stadium,
- 11:13Speaker 1: watching that thing unfold, just an incredible play call, incredible execution.
- 11:20Speaker 1: And once again, incredible complimentary football, because the very next
- 11:25Speaker 1: play Devin dampier, put it into the end zone. It was,
- 11:30Speaker 1: this was the Devin dampier run game for me. This
- 11:33Speaker 1: was the, the we're the Devin dampier legs game. what
- 11:38Speaker 1: he was able to do, rushing the football and just
- 11:41Speaker 1: identifying that, honestly, my fear for what Connor Wegman could
- 11:46Speaker 1: do to Utah's defense is exactly what Devin Dampier did
- 11:50Speaker 1: to Houston's defense. When I told you last week that
- 11:54Speaker 1: this was twin brothers fighting each other, I didn't really
- 11:57Speaker 1: fully account for the fact that Devin Dampier would and
- 12:01Speaker 1: could do exactly what I feared Connor Wegman would do
- 12:06Speaker 1: because Houston plays a lot of run, run defense as well.
- 12:09Speaker 1: And Houston found themselves in a lot of situation in
- 12:13Speaker 1: man defense, excuse me, where they, they, their defensive backs
- 12:17Speaker 1: had backs turned and were chasing people. And Devin Dampier
- 12:20Speaker 1: was just like, Oh yeah, here we go. Goodness gracious.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Absolutely incredible stuff. And now You survive. There were going
- 12:34Speaker 1: into the weekend. There were six undefeated teams in the country.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Three of them were in the big 12 conference, Texas tech, Utah, BYU,
- 12:43Speaker 1: Utah now stands alone as the only undefeated team in
- 12:45Speaker 1: the conference. Number six ranked in the country. Look, still
- 12:50Speaker 1: a very tough schedule ahead, but step one was to
- 12:55Speaker 1: prove to everybody yourselves that And everyone else that this
- 13:00Speaker 1: Utah team and what you saw through six weeks was
- 13:03Speaker 1: not by any stretch of the imagination, a fluke. That
- 13:06Speaker 1: was a really, really good Houston football team. And Utah
- 13:10Speaker 1: made them look kind of average. No, that's unfair. Made
- 13:14Speaker 1: them look just okay. Made them look perhaps like B
- 13:17Speaker 1: plus because when it really, really mattered, Utah got the
- 13:21Speaker 1: job done. And that was not a perfect game for,
- 13:24Speaker 1: for anyone. There were some situations, again, where you're like,
- 13:28Speaker 1: what is going on here? Devin Dampier with two interceptions
- 13:32Speaker 1: in this game. The first one being hit as he throws.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Look....
- 13:38Speaker 1: I I'm almost to the point where, where I'm going to,
- 13:40Speaker 1: I'm going to get over saying, oh, he's fine. Cause
- 13:42Speaker 1: he got hit. And he's, as he threw, he's got
- 13:44Speaker 1: to recognize that the contact is coming and that if
- 13:47Speaker 1: you're going to make a throw while the contact is
- 13:49Speaker 1: right there, it's gotta be a high percentage short throw.
- 13:52Speaker 1: You can't be heaving it when you know that you're
- 13:55Speaker 1: about to get hit, but we'll talk to Deb about
- 13:58Speaker 1: that addition with Deb this week and every week on
- 14:00Speaker 1: the Sean O'Connell show, but he played so well. And again,
- 14:05Speaker 1: I think one of the most important things like guys
- 14:07Speaker 1: are going to make mistakes. Your quarterback is going to
- 14:09Speaker 1: make mistakes. You don't want them to be turnover mistakes.
- 14:12Speaker 1: You don't want to be overly costly mistakes, but something
- 14:18Speaker 1: that I think we all need to appreciate about Kevin McGiven,
- 14:22Speaker 1: Colton Swan, Morgan Scali, but especially about Devin Dampier is
- 14:29Speaker 1: that when he makes those super costly mistakes, when he
- 14:32Speaker 1: turns the football over, He makes up for it. He
- 14:39Speaker 1: goes to the sideline and we asked him about this process.
- 14:42Speaker 1: He goes to the sideline. He clears it out of
- 14:44Speaker 1: his head. He truly believes that he's going to play
- 14:48Speaker 1: better than that last throw. And then he does. I
- 14:53Speaker 1: don't need perfection. Just give me redemption. And he does
- 14:57Speaker 1: every single time. Incredible, incredible stuff. at Rice Eccles stadium
- 15:04Speaker 1: on Saturday night, 8 7 7 3 5 3 0 700.
- 15:08Speaker 1: We're still fans. We're still going to be unreasonable. So
- 15:11Speaker 1: tell me what you love. Tell me what you hated.
- 15:13Speaker 1: And maybe what you hated was like the kicker segment
- 15:17Speaker 1: on college football game day. I hated that, that, that
- 15:22Speaker 1: poor gal Morgan, the, the Utah student Morgan boring. Her
- 15:26Speaker 1: name is boring. Her last name. I just watched it.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Cause I told you, I didn't, I didn't get up
- 15:32Speaker 1: early to watch a game day. So I caught up
- 15:37Speaker 1: this morning.
- 15:37Speaker 6: Uh, her name was Morgan boring and she had, she
- 15:41Speaker 6: had one of those, uh, listen to Morgan hats. That's a,
- 15:44Speaker 6: that I guess way Sean Parker has worn that, that
- 15:48Speaker 6: is a shout out to Morgan Scali.
- 15:50Speaker 1: So yeah, that was a tear.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:53Speaker 1: That was a tough segment to watch.
- 15:56Speaker 6: Pat, Making her feel bad a little or seemingly trying
- 16:01Speaker 6: to make her feel bad for bringing up that this
- 16:04Speaker 6: is less than what he gave the BYU student or
- 16:07Speaker 6: he was offering to the BYU student in the kicking segment.
- 16:09Speaker 6: But also, I don't know. weird kind of looking a
- 16:14Speaker 6: gift horse in the mouth that mouth that way if you're.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Morgan well here's the problem it was just an awful
- 16:19Speaker 1: look for Morgan and for you know because then you
- 16:23Speaker 1: use that moment to judge the entire fan base yeah
- 16:26Speaker 1: so that was an awful look for her it was
- 16:27Speaker 1: I think you know it's a joke that fell flat
- 16:29Speaker 1: but then also and you you guys can get mad
- 16:33Speaker 1: at me for this if you want it's a raffle
- 16:35Speaker 1: who gets to do the kick, right?
- 16:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 1: If you can't kick at all, if you are abysmally
- 16:42Speaker 1: uncoordinated and have no shot of making that kick, don't
- 16:46Speaker 1: put your name in the raffle. Take your name out
- 16:48Speaker 1: of the raffle. I mean, I don't want to be
- 16:50Speaker 1: in line for this because you take the opportunity away
- 16:54Speaker 1: from someone who might actually be making the kick that. And,
- 16:57Speaker 1: and then they're like, well, I'm a swimmer. I'm not okay. Fine.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Then don't try to kick.
- 17:03Speaker 6: I mean, That's like saying, oh, see, though, that's like
- 17:05Speaker 6: saying voluntarily take myself out of the running for potentially
- 17:10Speaker 6: a free million dollars.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Like, I don't know. No, it's not, James. It's not
- 17:13Speaker 1: because it's not a free million dollars. It's a million
- 17:16Speaker 1: dollars that you have to earn by doing something that
- 17:19Speaker 1: most people can't do. It's it's it's the same thing
- 17:23Speaker 1: as someone being lucky and it goes through, though. Well, OK,
- 17:26Speaker 1: but that's not something you get lucky with. And that's
- 17:28Speaker 1: the problem. There's this understanding. There's this failure to understand
- 17:32Speaker 1: for people. That like, it does require athleticism to kick.
- 17:35Speaker 1: We pretend that's not the case because we like to
- 17:38Speaker 1: make fun of kickers. It's actually, you have to be
- 17:40Speaker 1: coordinated to do it. You have to be someone that
- 17:42Speaker 1: can perform under pressure. You have to be someone like
- 17:46Speaker 1: you have to be self-aware as a human being. I
- 17:50Speaker 1: can make potentially a 25 yard kick. I can potentially
- 17:53Speaker 1: make a 35 yard kick. I could potentially make a
- 17:55Speaker 1: 15 yard kick. I was told that she tried to,
- 17:59Speaker 1: when she won the lottery, she tried to like the
- 18:01Speaker 1: person standing behind her in line or whatever. It was like,
- 18:04Speaker 1: if I win it, you kick. And they were like, no, you,
- 18:06Speaker 1: you won. It has to be you who kicks. You
- 18:09Speaker 1: can't have somebody else represent you, but please, we got
- 18:11Speaker 1: to do better.
- 18:13Speaker 5: All right.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Got to represent better. You got to represent better. You
- 18:16Speaker 1: got to put your best foot forward. And I, I'm
- 18:18Speaker 1: a conspiracy theorist. So I, I would not be shocked
- 18:23Speaker 1: if Ryan Smith was sitting next to Pat McAfee at
- 18:26Speaker 1: the jazz game the night before and just being like, dude,
- 18:28Speaker 1: just make sure that whoever kicks at Utah is awful
- 18:33Speaker 1: and make sure they don't get extra money. And like,
- 18:36Speaker 1: That's my only problem, though, with the whole thing, with
- 18:39Speaker 1: the whole day. That's my only problem with it. So
- 18:42Speaker 1: I'm going to stay positive here. 877-353-0700. Caden on the
- 18:48Speaker 1: text line says, all right, how about them Utes? With
- 18:50Speaker 1: that win, will the narrative about Utah not playing anyone stop?
- 18:54Speaker 1: Or does it continue? I'm confused on the comments made.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Isn't the goal to beat up on bad teams, which
- 18:58Speaker 1: Utah's done? Doesn't the whole SEC conference do this? Thanks, guys.
- 19:02Speaker 1: And then he throws in a go Niners. Look, the
- 19:04Speaker 1: Niners can afford to lose five games. They were going
- 19:07Speaker 1: to drop one at some point. Brock Purdy, wake up. Anyway, yes,
- 19:13Speaker 1: the narrative about Utah not having played anyone has to stop. However,
- 19:18Speaker 1: we also collectively, as a fan base, do not... Fall
- 19:23Speaker 1: for what you hate your rivals for falling for. Do
- 19:26Speaker 1: not fall for what you dislike about Notre Dame if
- 19:30Speaker 1: you dislike Notre Dame. Dislike about USC if you dislike USC.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Do not fall for the same thing where when one
- 19:39Speaker 1: thing happens that confirms your bias, you act like it
- 19:42Speaker 1: is an absolute truth, okay? This, we literally saw the
- 19:47Speaker 1: pride cycle play out this week with BYU, everybody in
- 19:53Speaker 1: the fan base. I don't, I won't make the accusation
- 19:55Speaker 1: that it was happening with the team, but the risk
- 19:58Speaker 1: is you pat yourself on the back. You see, aha,
- 20:01Speaker 1: we told people we could do it and we did it.
- 20:04Speaker 1: And then the next week you come up short. That
- 20:07Speaker 1: is the crucial thing for the rest of time with
- 20:10Speaker 1: this Utah football team. Not for the rest of the time,
- 20:13Speaker 1: for the rest of this season with this Utah football team.
- 20:15Speaker 1: You cannot let this game mean for the team itself
- 20:19Speaker 1: anything more than you got to win over a really
- 20:22Speaker 1: good opponent. Because you got another tough team coming up
- 20:25Speaker 1: next week. You got another really, really good BYU team
- 20:29Speaker 1: in a rivalry game coming in the week after this.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Then you've got a a terrible trap game the following
- 20:36Speaker 1: week against Arizona. If there is, if the, if you
- 20:39Speaker 1: want to talk about true significance for this Houston game
- 20:43Speaker 1: and everything else that played out in college football this week,
- 20:46Speaker 1: you now have margin for error. You now have a
- 20:50Speaker 1: small amount of wiggle room and it is a tiny
- 20:53Speaker 1: amount of wiggle room, but you have now Utah and
- 20:57Speaker 1: With Texas Tech losing, with BYU losing, with Arizona already
- 21:00Speaker 1: having a loss, with Houston now having two losses, now
- 21:03Speaker 1: you have a little bit of wiggle room to where
- 21:06Speaker 1: you don't have to clutch up. You don't have to
- 21:09Speaker 1: hold your breath. You don't have to be tense every
- 21:12Speaker 1: time about the possibility of a loss knocking you all
- 21:16Speaker 1: the way out of a conference championship game. Texas Tech's
- 21:20Speaker 1: schedule looked like on paper, hey, they're not going to
- 21:24Speaker 1: lose any games. They lost the game, all right? BYU,
- 21:28Speaker 1: we thought that BYU's loss would come to Notre Dame potentially.
- 21:32Speaker 1: That doesn't do anything for the conference title race. And
- 21:35Speaker 1: when they beat everyone else, it was like, okay, the
- 21:38Speaker 1: head-to-head with Utah is going to be who gets into
- 21:40Speaker 1: the conference championship game. I still believe that's going to
- 21:43Speaker 1: be the case. But now you have a tiny little
- 21:46Speaker 1: bit of wiggle room. That's the only real significance to
- 21:49Speaker 1: this game. Let the narrative about Utah be whatever the
- 21:52Speaker 1: narrative is. because all this team has to do is
- 21:55Speaker 1: go and continue to control their destiny. And for us,
- 21:59Speaker 1: for the people that matter, that watch them every day,
- 22:03Speaker 1: what this game did was it confirmed the bias that
- 22:06Speaker 1: you already had, that this team is good and will
- 22:10Speaker 1: be able to overcome things when they really face a
- 22:13Speaker 1: tough team. When they face a little bit of adversity
- 22:15Speaker 1: in a game, when your quarterback turns the ball over,
- 22:18Speaker 1: when you have all the momentum as they, as he did, right.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Can your defense respond? And they did twice, three times. So,
- 22:28Speaker 1: and can that quarterback get out of his own head
- 22:31Speaker 1: after he throws an interception? Yes. Can you win if
- 22:34Speaker 1: way Sean Parker doesn't have a 250 yard game? Answer
- 22:39Speaker 1: is yes. Do you need everybody to be flawless and
- 22:42Speaker 1: perfect in order for you to win a game? No,
- 22:45Speaker 1: you don't. We learned that against Colorado. Well, what about
- 22:49Speaker 1: against the good team? Because Colorado ain't one. Now against
- 22:52Speaker 1: the good team, you played a game that was far
- 22:54Speaker 1: from perfect, but you came out with the win, and
- 22:57Speaker 1: it was a thing of beauty because I'm telling you,
- 23:00Speaker 1: it's not common in football. Go watch every level. Go
- 23:04Speaker 1: watch high school ball. Go watch college ball, any conference.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Watch it in the NFL. It is actually not all
- 23:13Speaker 1: that common. that when your team, it's a very obvious,
- 23:17Speaker 1: anyone watching your grandma could be sitting down with you knitting.
- 23:21Speaker 1: And there's a moment or two or three in every
- 23:23Speaker 1: game where it's like, whoever makes the play here, whoever
- 23:27Speaker 1: has the coach and the players that put the right
- 23:30Speaker 1: combination together and make a play here, that is who's
- 23:34Speaker 1: going to win the game. It happened last week against Colorado.
- 23:39Speaker 1: where you were in that spot, Colorado had seized all
- 23:42Speaker 1: the momentum back, and it was like, if they don't
- 23:44Speaker 1: make a play and get this first down, then Colorado's
- 23:48Speaker 1: going to win this game. Colorado was still trailing at
- 23:50Speaker 1: that moment, but we all recognized it. Hey, it's third
- 23:54Speaker 1: and ten. If Devin doesn't make a throw here, this
- 23:57Speaker 1: game is going to go Colorado's way. You're going to
- 23:59Speaker 1: punt it back. They're going to have even more momentum.
- 24:01Speaker 1: It's going to get ugly. And what happened? Devin Dampier
- 24:04Speaker 1: to Creed Whittemore streaking on the left sideline. Beautiful catch.
- 24:09Speaker 1: All right. Little breathing room. Made the play necessary. Got
- 24:12Speaker 1: the job done. All right. Now, Houston. Ball, they're down
- 24:19Speaker 1: a point. They have the ball back. Two plus minutes
- 24:24Speaker 1: to work. Timeouts to spare. Experienced quarterback. Athletes all over
- 24:30Speaker 1: the field. That moment, all of us recognized it. Everyone
- 24:34Speaker 1: at Rice Eccles Stadium did. Everyone watching at home did,
- 24:37Speaker 1: whether they were rooting against Utah or for Utah. Everyone
- 24:40Speaker 1: recognized in that moment, somebody has to make a play here,
- 24:44Speaker 1: whether it's Houston or Utah, and this is the game.
- 24:46Speaker 1: This is going to be the game. And now two
- 24:49Speaker 1: weeks in a row, Utah came up with the call
- 24:53Speaker 1: and the execution, and they made the play. That is
- 24:57Speaker 1: not as common as you think in college football, in
- 25:00Speaker 1: NFL football, in high school football, in Pop Warner football.
- 25:04Speaker 1: When everybody knows the stakes in that exact second, and
- 25:08Speaker 1: it is your guys who come through and make the play,
- 25:11Speaker 1: that is what separates good teams from great teams, great
- 25:15Speaker 1: teams from elite teams, bad teams from good teams. Oh,
- 25:21Speaker 1: it was gorgeous. It was a wonderful thing. Your texts,
- 25:25Speaker 1: keep them coming in. We're going to get to your
- 25:26Speaker 1: feedback after we talk to Ari Temkin.
- 25:29Speaker 2: 877-353-7000.
- 25:32Speaker 7: 0-700.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Don't go anywhere. We're talking Big 12 football. A huge
- 25:36Speaker 1: weekend in the conference, and only one undefeated team left,
- 25:39Speaker 1: and that is your Utes. We're rolling on a Monday.
- 25:43Speaker 1: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 25:45Speaker 1: You're tuned to the.
- 25:55Speaker 5: Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN
- 25:59Speaker 5: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Keep your feedback coming in. What'd you love? What'd you hate?
- 26:11Speaker 1: If there was anything to hate about Utah beating Houston
- 26:15Speaker 1: on Saturday night, eight, seven, seven, three, five, three, zero
- 26:18Speaker 1: 700 at real OC sports on the Twitter machine.
- 26:22Speaker 3: Oh man.
- 26:23Speaker 1: We're talking some big 12 football, some Utah football. Ari
- 26:26Speaker 1: Temkin joins us big 12 today on tune in radio.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Good friend of the show. Ari, welcome. How are you?
- 26:34Speaker 3: I'm great.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I see. How are you, buddy?
- 26:35Speaker 1: I'm doing awesome. We had an exciting night. On Saturday, Houston, really,
- 26:41Speaker 1: really solid team, came in ranked number 14 in the country.
- 26:45Speaker 1: College game day on campus in the morning and already
- 26:49Speaker 1: torn down and cleared out by the time the game
- 26:51Speaker 1: actually kicked off, which is kind of a funny dynamic.
- 26:53Speaker 1: But ultimately, Utah gets the win in a tight game
- 26:57Speaker 1: and a really fun game. Not as high scoring as
- 27:00Speaker 1: I thought it would be between the two highest scoring
- 27:02Speaker 1: offenses in the Big 12. The result, of course, that
- 27:06Speaker 1: everyone here in Salt Lake was hoping for. As the outsider,
- 27:09Speaker 1: as the external viewer, what did you think of this game?
- 27:14Speaker 2: Well, I mean, there was a lot to like. You know,
- 27:17Speaker 2: I think we've seen at different times this year, teams
- 27:20Speaker 2: try to take away certain aspects of Utah's offense, and
- 27:24Speaker 2: they were able to respond. I mean, we obviously have
- 27:26Speaker 2: not seen Devin Dampier run like the way that he
- 27:29Speaker 2: ran in this game. And, you know, and it was
- 27:32Speaker 2: needed every yard because they were really doing a good
- 27:36Speaker 2: job in limiting way Sean Parker. And Yeah, look, Parker
- 27:39Speaker 2: was chippy throughout the game. I feel like there were
- 27:41Speaker 2: multiple opportunities that he might have been flagged for kind
- 27:44Speaker 2: of some extracurricular, and he still managed to make an
- 27:49Speaker 2: impact in the game even without his running. I've got
- 27:52Speaker 2: to say, O.C., the one thing, though, and this almost
- 27:54Speaker 2: came back to bite them, with the two-minute timeout still
- 27:59Speaker 2: looming and one timeout for Houston, I think Devin Dampier
- 28:02Speaker 2: running it into the end zone was the wrong move.
- 28:05Speaker 2: That's one where I think you've got to get down.
- 28:08Speaker 2: take more time. It obviously didn't matter in the end,
- 28:11Speaker 2: but it could have had Houston be able to get
- 28:15Speaker 2: into the end zone and get the two-point conversion and
- 28:17Speaker 2: send it to overtime. So I was not a fan
- 28:20Speaker 2: and thought that that was really almost a disaster for
- 28:24Speaker 2: Utah with one timeout and a two-minute timeout. I still
- 28:27Speaker 2: didn't think that Houston would be able to stop the
- 28:29Speaker 2: clock enough and run it out there, but Dampier ran
- 28:32Speaker 2: it in, and luckily the defense came up at the stop.
- 28:34Speaker 1: I thought that maybe if you're going to score that quickly,
- 28:37Speaker 1: go for the two-point conversion. You're at home. Nine-point lead
- 28:42Speaker 1: at that point is the game over, basically.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's either you're up a touchdown if
- 28:51Speaker 2: you don't get it or you're up by two scores.
- 28:54Speaker 2: I probably would have leaned more towards your side, but again, like,
- 28:57Speaker 2: I think you've got to know if you're damp here,
- 28:59Speaker 2: they want you to score. They're going to give it
- 29:01Speaker 2: to you so that you can get the ball back.
- 29:02Speaker 2: You've got to get down. And, again, I know they
- 29:04Speaker 2: had a timeout, and they still had the two-minute timeout,
- 29:07Speaker 2: but I still don't think that would have been enough
- 29:08Speaker 2: time in order to get the ball back and go
- 29:11Speaker 2: down and score. And, look, it was close. I mean,
- 29:15Speaker 2: maybe it was a pass interference at the end that
- 29:17Speaker 2: wasn't called. You know, it really came down at the end,
- 29:22Speaker 2: you know, and so– I think football is always tough
- 29:27Speaker 2: when it comes to scoring and you want to get
- 29:28Speaker 2: into the end zone, but that was one where I thought, man,
- 29:31Speaker 2: it probably was a little bit too close for what
- 29:33Speaker 2: was necessary, given if you just get down there, I
- 29:35Speaker 2: think the game is over quicker.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Devin Dampier had... 18 completions on 26 attempts, 204 yards.
- 29:43Speaker 1: He did throw the two interceptions, the second of which
- 29:46Speaker 1: was really, really bad because you're building a nice drive.
- 29:50Speaker 1: It's fourth quarter. It's an important moment of the game. Uh,
- 29:54Speaker 1: and you know, if you just keep that ball and
- 29:56Speaker 1: keep running, it's a positive play for your offense. And
- 29:59Speaker 1: instead he kind of tries this lofting jump pass almost. Uh, so,
- 30:03Speaker 1: but ultimately it were, it was really his legs that
- 30:06Speaker 1: were the story of Utah's offense, 15 carries for 150
- 30:10Speaker 1: yards and a couple of touchdowns, one of which you
- 30:13Speaker 1: just mentioned, but, uh, it was, you know, keeping the
- 30:16Speaker 1: drive alive multiple times in this game, the legs of
- 30:19Speaker 1: Devin Dampier much more than we've seen from him in
- 30:22Speaker 1: all season long. And, you know, there's an article now
- 30:25Speaker 1: about him talking to an old private, you know, his
- 30:28Speaker 1: personal QB coach saying, when you recognize that, just go.
- 30:31Speaker 1: I don't know why it takes an external voice to
- 30:34Speaker 1: say those things or whatever, but do you think Devin
- 30:37Speaker 1: Dampier will see more of this, more running from Devin
- 30:40Speaker 1: Dampier as the tough part of Utah's schedule progresses?
- 30:45Speaker 2: I would think so. And it's going to be extremely important.
- 30:49Speaker 2: But I also, you know, I like the dynamic of
- 30:52Speaker 2: you know, look, lean on Bray, lean on Parker. Those
- 30:54Speaker 2: are your main rushers. They've been effective this year. And
- 30:58Speaker 2: only in spots where, you know, you absolutely have to
- 31:01Speaker 2: have it, you know, and that I think is what
- 31:04Speaker 2: presented itself in this game. I mean, they were, Houston
- 31:06Speaker 2: was dead set on taking away Way Sean Parker. And,
- 31:10Speaker 2: you know, so because I think of that, united a
- 31:13Speaker 2: call more past plays and and you know that because
- 31:16Speaker 2: they're paying extra attention to waste on parker now that
- 31:19Speaker 2: gives you an opportunity the quarterback to where you have
- 31:22Speaker 2: you know some some match-ups on the outside that give
- 31:24Speaker 2: you some running room i think that's exactly what he
- 31:26Speaker 2: did and it's one of those just take with the
- 31:28Speaker 2: defense sort of gives you type games and but we've
- 31:31Speaker 2: seen it in different ways throughout the season with Utah,
- 31:35Speaker 2: where they try to take this away and now they
- 31:37Speaker 2: beat you that way. I think that ultimately is how
- 31:41Speaker 2: you win big, not just in the Big 12, but
- 31:44Speaker 2: in playoff games. The best teams can win when they're
- 31:48Speaker 2: at their best and things are rolling, but when they
- 31:50Speaker 2: try to take away certain things, I think that's where
- 31:53Speaker 2: what we saw with Devin Dampier really takes meaning. And
- 31:56Speaker 2: the other part to this, too, is I think the
- 31:58Speaker 2: story of this weekend of the big 12 was missed tackles.
- 32:01Speaker 2: You know, the BYU game, you know, more so than
- 32:03Speaker 2: some of those weird calls at the end of the game,
- 32:06Speaker 2: like BYU missed a ton of tackles on UCF in
- 32:10Speaker 2: that game. And the same could be said about Houston.
- 32:12Speaker 2: I mean, Houston usually is a sure tackling team. I
- 32:15Speaker 2: think there was, there's a few factors here and this was,
- 32:18Speaker 2: this was kind of an old school Utah win where
- 32:20Speaker 2: they leaned heavily on their defense and and quarterback ron
- 32:23Speaker 2: but a big part of what a lot of the
- 32:25Speaker 2: quarterback rather be that that's full with ms tackled up
- 32:28Speaker 2: here with flipping through many of those on tackles that
- 32:30Speaker 2: they've gotten for extra yardage and then yeah i mean
- 32:33Speaker 2: i loved colton swan in the second half and fourth
- 32:35Speaker 2: quarter in particular dialing up the blitz is because Connor
- 32:40Speaker 2: Wegman's been very, very good this year, but when you
- 32:43Speaker 2: bring blitzes from different parts and confuse them as they
- 32:46Speaker 2: were doing, you get the result that you see, which
- 32:48Speaker 2: is a fourth quarter where Houston could not do anything offensively.
- 32:51Speaker 2: I credit a lot of that to what Utah did defensively,
- 32:54Speaker 2: and obviously look at the final strip sack where Benny
- 32:59Speaker 2: was one of the guys that kind of came out
- 33:01Speaker 2: of nowhere and was able to fumble Connor Wegman on
- 33:05Speaker 2: that play.
- 33:07Speaker 1: So now... Now Utah's got Cincinnati. And, of course, the
- 33:11Speaker 1: easiest comp here is what just happened with BYU and UCF.
- 33:16Speaker 1: We'll get to that in just a second. But you
- 33:17Speaker 1: come off a big win, your biggest win of the
- 33:19Speaker 1: season undoubtedly for Utah. You go on the road, and
- 33:23Speaker 1: it's against a team that, I mean, now people are
- 33:25Speaker 1: paying attention to because they were able to beat Tech,
- 33:27Speaker 1: but that we didn't talk about much until now. And
- 33:31Speaker 1: Cincinnati's formidable. So how do you handicap that game? What
- 33:34Speaker 1: do you think that game ends up looking like for
- 33:36Speaker 1: Utah on the road?
- 33:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's tough from the standpoint of I'm
- 33:41Speaker 2: not really sure what to think of Cincinnati's defense. You know,
- 33:45Speaker 2: at times earlier this year, the defense looked really good.
- 33:48Speaker 2: And then there were weeks where the defense looked absolutely atrocious.
- 33:54Speaker 2: and then this week where the defense was dynamic and,
- 33:57Speaker 2: I mean, played a crucial role in making Texas Tech
- 34:00Speaker 2: offense look bad. So that's where I start here is
- 34:04Speaker 2: Cincinnati has a very good offense. J.C. French is one
- 34:07Speaker 2: of the more underrated quarterbacks in the Big 12 because
- 34:10Speaker 2: he's a legit dual threat. They have a really good
- 34:12Speaker 2: offensive line, and they've been able to run the ball
- 34:15Speaker 2: very effectively all year. So those things, like, that's a given. Like, that's...
- 34:21Speaker 2: We shouldn't be confused about that. Cincinnati has a very
- 34:23Speaker 2: legitimate defense, a very legitimate offense. There are just major
- 34:26Speaker 2: questions about the defense and which defense will show up.
- 34:30Speaker 2: I mean, again, against Texas Tech, they made Texas Tech's
- 34:33Speaker 2: offense look atrocious. And Texas Tech's offense has not been
- 34:36Speaker 2: good all year, but it has not looked good. that
- 34:38Speaker 2: bad all season. And so I certainly think, you know,
- 34:41Speaker 2: their defense played a big role in making them look
- 34:44Speaker 2: that bad, but make no mistake about it. I mean,
- 34:46Speaker 2: Cincinnati with cold tab at running back. I mean, they
- 34:50Speaker 2: did do a Texas tech defense, what no team had
- 34:52Speaker 2: been able to do since she'll would took over. When
- 34:54Speaker 2: you think about last season and this season, no team
- 34:57Speaker 2: had rushed for over 175 yards and they did it.
- 34:59Speaker 2: They had not given up a rushing touchdown all year.
- 35:01Speaker 2: They gave up a 51 rushing 51 yard rushing touchdown,
- 35:05Speaker 2: a cold tab in this game. So Cincinnati, This is
- 35:07Speaker 2: a very robust offense. It's very difficult to stop. It
- 35:10Speaker 2: starts up front where they have one of the best,
- 35:12Speaker 2: if not the best, offensive line in the Big 12.
- 35:15Speaker 2: I mean, they lost Terran Tayo in this game. They're
- 35:19Speaker 2: placed with another guy that came in and played very
- 35:21Speaker 2: well against a very good defensive front. So I'd be
- 35:24Speaker 2: very confused between, I'd be very interested to see the
- 35:27Speaker 2: matchup between Scott Satterfield and Colton Swan, Morgan Scali with
- 35:31Speaker 2: the defensive end.
- 35:34Speaker 1: All right, Tim, can here on Sean O'Connell, show talk
- 35:37Speaker 1: at all things Big 12 football. Three undefeated teams heading
- 35:41Speaker 1: into last weekend in the conference. Only one remains, and that,
- 35:44Speaker 1: of course, is Utah, because Cincinnati beats Texas Tech. You
- 35:48Speaker 1: just talked about, you know, Colt Tab, the hero of
- 35:50Speaker 1: that game. And then UCF, BYU. First of all, the
- 35:55Speaker 1: end-of-game scenario in this one is one of the most bizarre, convoluted, drawn-out,
- 36:01Speaker 1: disgusting ends of game I've seen. I thought that the officials...
- 36:05Speaker 1: screwed up, really hurting both teams, and ultimately UCF gets
- 36:10Speaker 1: the win. It took into double overtime to make it happen.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Let's start with the end-of-game scenario. Helmet gets ripped off,
- 36:20Speaker 1: a flag is thrown, and then the flag is picked up,
- 36:22Speaker 1: and then there's a 10-second runoff that we have since
- 36:24Speaker 1: learned should not have happened. Why now, multiple times in
- 36:29Speaker 1: a year, twice in two weeks, clocks have been mismanaged here,
- 36:33Speaker 1: at the end of BYU games, and of course, Michigan,
- 36:36Speaker 1: Western Michigan, at the beginning of the season. Ari, why
- 36:40Speaker 1: can't we get the clock thing right in college football?
- 36:42Speaker 1: It's 2026.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it's maddening. I mean, this ending was insanity. I mean,
- 36:50Speaker 2: even going back... to the the fourth in goal from
- 36:53Speaker 2: the one stop that be why you got and was
- 36:56Speaker 2: able to flip at the end of this game you
- 36:59Speaker 2: know and and and then you get the ball back
- 37:01Speaker 2: at the one but you're right three times instead of
- 37:03Speaker 2: trying to take some chances with that experience quarterback at
- 37:06Speaker 2: the number two team in the nation i get it
- 37:08Speaker 2: you're trying to make the play that that and the
- 37:10Speaker 2: game for you but I thought the approach there from
- 37:13Speaker 2: Aaron Roderick and Kalani Satake, it left a little bit
- 37:17Speaker 2: to be desired. And then they punt and give the
- 37:21Speaker 2: ball back to UCF, playing it safe, give up a
- 37:24Speaker 2: big play to Josh Derry on third down, which allowed
- 37:28Speaker 2: the drive to continue and most importantly set UCF in
- 37:31Speaker 2: field goal range. And then this is when it got
- 37:34Speaker 2: crazy bizarre because then they set up the field goal unit,
- 37:37Speaker 2: then realized they should probably take off more time. So
- 37:40Speaker 2: they run a few plays but didn't really want to
- 37:41Speaker 2: do anything with those plays. They just wanted to take
- 37:44Speaker 2: time off. So they run a few plays. Then, of course,
- 37:47Speaker 2: they set up for the game-winning field goal. It's blocked
- 37:50Speaker 2: in a ridiculous play by Satuola. Because it was blocked
- 37:54Speaker 2: behind the line of scrimmage, that would allow for UCF
- 37:59Speaker 2: to kick another field goal. That was what I was
- 38:02Speaker 2: also confused about, the whole, you know, if you kick
- 38:05Speaker 2: in an early down, can you kick again? Well, you
- 38:07Speaker 2: can only if the ball does not get past or
- 38:11Speaker 2: if the ball is behind the line of scrimmage. So
- 38:13Speaker 2: then that transpires. The helmet's ripped off. The 10-second runoff
- 38:17Speaker 2: was a product of the helmet coming off. Now, how
- 38:20Speaker 2: did his helmet come off? That's, I guess, what you
- 38:25Speaker 2: could argue, but they basically did the 10-second runoff because
- 38:29Speaker 2: the helmet came off. How it came off, I don't know.
- 38:33Speaker 2: It must have just magically fallen off, perhaps. And then
- 38:36Speaker 2: after all that, I forgot, of course, the Keanu Tanavasa penalty,
- 38:44Speaker 2: which kept it going. I mean, it was just maddening,
- 38:47Speaker 2: the end of this game, and so many mistakes by BYU.
- 38:50Speaker 2: and ultimately gets to that second overtime where a lot
- 38:53Speaker 2: of BYU fans are upset about the roughing the kicker call.
- 38:56Speaker 2: And the way it was explained to me is, look,
- 38:58Speaker 2: if you're blocking at the kicker, it's obvious where the
- 39:00Speaker 2: official is standing behind the play. He could see the,
- 39:03Speaker 2: the bull rush aggressiveness from the defensive lineman. And at
- 39:06Speaker 2: that point, when you burst through and you're out of control,
- 39:09Speaker 2: they're going to call that. And by the letter of law,
- 39:11Speaker 2: that is the penalty. And obviously that extended the drive,
- 39:15Speaker 2: allowed them to put the go-ahead touchdown in there, and
- 39:18Speaker 2: then an amazing play by Keewon Jenkins on the two-point
- 39:21Speaker 2: conversion where he was nearly sacked. Again, a broken tackle.
- 39:24Speaker 8: He escapes it.
- 39:26Speaker 2: He rushes out to his left, rolls out to his left,
- 39:29Speaker 2: and completes a pass. to the true freshman, Horns, for
- 39:31Speaker 2: the two-point conversion. It was just the craziest. final two
- 39:36Speaker 2: minutes and overtime. I think I've ever seen. It's even
- 39:39Speaker 2: hard to explain or remember every single situation that transpired here.
- 39:42Speaker 2: And to your point, it was very bizarre. Like a
- 39:46Speaker 2: few of these plays, I think first that the ton of,
- 39:48Speaker 2: you know, first where they thought they get the fumble
- 39:51Speaker 2: and recovery, we're now suddenly BYU looks like they're the
- 39:55Speaker 2: ones that are going to get the ball back with
- 39:57Speaker 2: an opportunity to kick a game-winning field goal. It was
- 39:59Speaker 2: a great play by Jenkins because chambers was right there.
- 40:02Speaker 2: So it was not grounding because he was trying to
- 40:04Speaker 2: get the ball to the running back, you know, and
- 40:07Speaker 2: then kind of also kind of a, you know, a play.
- 40:10Speaker 2: You don't expect him to make a veteran that he
- 40:13Speaker 2: slams the guy's head in the ground, which made it
- 40:14Speaker 2: a little bit of an easier field goal. All these
- 40:17Speaker 2: crazy things happen at the end of the day, BYU
- 40:19Speaker 2: missed far too many tackles missed far too many opportunities.
- 40:22Speaker 2: And I think ultimately OC in this very long winded
- 40:25Speaker 2: answer here.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Like the one thing we should.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Have taken away from the Notre Dame game was this
- 40:29Speaker 2: is not sustainable. You cannot win where bear Bachmeier has
- 40:33Speaker 2: to do everything. They don't have a running game. It
- 40:36Speaker 2: was completely absent. Once again, this week, it's all on bear.
- 40:38Speaker 2: And when they take a bit way quarterback run, now
- 40:41Speaker 2: all of a sudden he's got a wind through the
- 40:42Speaker 2: air and he did a lot in this game. Just
- 40:44Speaker 2: not enough.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Interestingly, not enough. overly punitive rankings uh after byu loses
- 40:53Speaker 1: right yes they drop but and they they lose to
- 40:55Speaker 1: an unranked team but they you know i think that
- 40:58Speaker 1: there's a sentiment here that hey this is still a
- 41:01Speaker 1: really good byu football team and i don't disagree and
- 41:04Speaker 1: obviously they're going to be much different when lj martin
- 41:06Speaker 1: comes back and they're trying to get him back either
- 41:09Speaker 1: this week or for the holy war which we now
- 41:11Speaker 1: found out is a 10 a.m kickoff what do you
- 41:14Speaker 1: think of a 10 a.m kickoff local for the holy
- 41:16Speaker 1: war Oh my goodness.
- 41:19Speaker 2: I hate that. I mean, I guess it's, it's going
- 41:22Speaker 2: to be, is that the big noon kickoff? Is that
- 41:24Speaker 2: why it is?
- 41:25Speaker 1: It's going to be on ESPN or ABC. So maybe
- 41:29Speaker 1: the big noon show will be here, but no, it's a,
- 41:32Speaker 1: it's an ABC or ESPN game.
- 41:35Speaker 2: I had not heard that yet. You know what, let
- 41:40Speaker 2: me ask you this. Oh, see, is that usually a
- 41:42Speaker 2: night game?
- 41:44Speaker 1: We've seen it played every time of the day. It
- 41:47Speaker 1: has been at night. For me, there's been a groundswell of,
- 41:53Speaker 1: even though everyone loves Rice Eccles at night and everyone
- 41:55Speaker 1: loves the atmosphere, the fans last week were complaining like,
- 41:59Speaker 1: oh my gosh, another night game. What's going on here?
- 42:01Speaker 1: And now you get the pendulum swinging all the way back,
- 42:04Speaker 1: the overcorrection in a 10 a.m.
- 42:05Speaker 3: Game.
- 42:06Speaker 1: And you guessed it. Everyone's mad about that also. So
- 42:10Speaker 1: I think here's the thing. The reason the conference and
- 42:14Speaker 1: that this is a Brett, your Mark problem, in my opinion,
- 42:17Speaker 1: or a Brett, your Mark situation, if you don't want
- 42:19Speaker 1: to call it a problem, he has to justify not
- 42:23Speaker 1: having this game be at, at the rivalry week, the
- 42:27Speaker 1: end of the year. And, and This November 7th, that
- 42:32Speaker 1: day is a slate of unbelievable games. Miami, Notre Dame,
- 42:38Speaker 1: Ohio state's got a big one. If I'm not mistaken,
- 42:40Speaker 1: there's like six other ranked versus ranked. So in order
- 42:43Speaker 1: for them in order for it to be, Hey, this
- 42:46Speaker 1: is the showcase game that we promised you is going
- 42:49Speaker 1: to be. You had to either put it at night again,
- 42:52Speaker 1: which now the big networks don't want to do because
- 42:54Speaker 1: it's top 10 matchup, or you had to put it
- 42:57Speaker 1: early in the morning where it's in a showcase game.
- 43:00Speaker 1: like actually nationally available, everyone can watch it kind of
- 43:03Speaker 1: a slot. And I think that's where the problem comes in.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, when you initially said it, my first
- 43:09Speaker 2: thought was, you know, either the big noon kick or it's,
- 43:14Speaker 2: you know, it's because there's a lot of traffic you're
- 43:16Speaker 2: trying to avoid. I mean, I get the Utah fan
- 43:20Speaker 2: sentiment of the night game, you know, this wasn't a
- 43:23Speaker 2: night game. This was a very late game, you know,
- 43:25Speaker 2: nine 15 central. So it was kind of an obnoxious
- 43:29Speaker 2: time for, my standard point now, again, I think you,
- 43:33Speaker 2: you identified it correctly, right? Like the conference is looking
- 43:36Speaker 2: for big wins and windows that they're not competing against,
- 43:38Speaker 2: you know, the SEC and the big 10, um, because
- 43:42Speaker 2: they want, you know, in many ways to be able to,
- 43:45Speaker 2: to put this all into the, you know, the PowerPoint
- 43:48Speaker 2: they're going to be presenting to TV networks here in
- 43:51Speaker 2: a few years when it comes to, um, the opportunity
- 43:54Speaker 2: with the big 12 and how big 12 with its
- 43:56Speaker 2: own windows, you know, is, is, is holding its own. Um,
- 44:00Speaker 2: There's probably no perfect spot for this game. I think
- 44:06Speaker 2: I start almost at the beginning where you said that
- 44:09Speaker 2: the losses specifically for BYU did not penalize the conference
- 44:13Speaker 2: maybe as much as we expected it to. I do
- 44:16Speaker 2: recall hearing during the Utah broadcast that those teams, Utah
- 44:20Speaker 2: and BYU, have never met in a matchup before. both
- 44:23Speaker 2: his top 10 teams. So as long as things go,
- 44:25Speaker 2: you know, as planned this week, then there's a good
- 44:28Speaker 2: chance it'll be the first time ever for that matchup.
- 44:31Speaker 2: So to have it be that early in the morning
- 44:33Speaker 2: is a disappointment. I will say too, just as a
- 44:36Speaker 2: fan of rivalries, you know, historically they hold games earlier.
- 44:40Speaker 2: I think of Texas OU just because they don't want
- 44:43Speaker 2: people to be too drunk. Now, obviously that's not the
- 44:45Speaker 2: case in this game, but So, you know, that's where, like,
- 44:51Speaker 2: a lot of these rivalry games will never occur at night. Now,
- 44:53Speaker 2: the dynamics of Utah and BYU are a bit different
- 44:55Speaker 2: where you can allow for a night game because, you know,
- 44:57Speaker 2: A lot of the folks involved aren't drinking, and you
- 45:00Speaker 2: don't have to worry about that. So just kind of
- 45:03Speaker 2: thinking through all of these dynamics, there's probably no perfect time,
- 45:07Speaker 2: except for maybe like a local 2.30 kick or a
- 45:09Speaker 2: local 6 or 7 kick. But once they kick off,
- 45:14Speaker 2: ultimately this only matters, I think, for the fans, because
- 45:17Speaker 2: ultimately when they kick off, I mean, both teams are–
- 45:20Speaker 2: understand what's at stake and how big of a deal
- 45:22Speaker 2: this is going to be. I think it's also OC
- 45:24Speaker 2: never become more clear than this week that there's a
- 45:27Speaker 2: good chance. The big 12 championship game is going to
- 45:29Speaker 2: be a rematch of it.
- 45:30Speaker 1: Okay. So handicap, handicap, the conference for me, right, right now,
- 45:35Speaker 1: Utah's number one, you can't put them anywhere else. Where
- 45:38Speaker 1: does everyone else go? Is it true to rankings? Is it,
- 45:42Speaker 1: you know, is it Arizona number two right now? Tell
- 45:45Speaker 1: me what, tell me what the power structure is in
- 45:47Speaker 1: the big 12 conference.
- 45:49Speaker 2: That's a great question because, I mean, I'm really down
- 45:52Speaker 2: on Texas Tech just because of their offense. Whereas with BYU,
- 45:57Speaker 2: I'd like to have a better understanding of when L.J.
- 45:59Speaker 2: Martin will return because, you know, look, they're one and
- 46:02Speaker 2: one now with L.J. Martin coming back at some point,
- 46:05Speaker 2: and we know that that's going to make such a
- 46:07Speaker 2: significant difference. I mean, take away Weishan Parker from Utah,
- 46:10Speaker 2: and what does that look like? It's a very similar dynamic.
- 46:13Speaker 2: So I think... I'd probably still put BYU at two.
- 46:17Speaker 2: And then at three, I mean, you're looking at Houston,
- 46:20Speaker 2: Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Arizona, right? So there's basically
- 46:23Speaker 2: four teams now for three spots. I would probably put
- 46:27Speaker 2: Oklahoma state in third, which is weird just given what
- 46:33Speaker 2: they've done this year. But I mean, drew a mess
- 46:36Speaker 2: maker is so dynamic. Some of the plays that he's
- 46:38Speaker 2: able to make with his arm, with his legs. I mean, he's,
- 46:41Speaker 2: he's unbelievable. And certainly if I were an NFL team,
- 46:44Speaker 2: I'd be looking at him for the first overall pick.
- 46:46Speaker 2: And then I'd probably put Texas tech four. And then
- 46:50Speaker 2: as I think through this, probably Arizona at five, just
- 46:53Speaker 2: because Houston has those two losses and, Arizona has only lost, obviously,
- 46:57Speaker 2: to BYU on the road. They have who I'd argue
- 47:00Speaker 2: is the best quarterback and probably the most underrated quarterback
- 47:03Speaker 2: in college football in Fafita, who just continues to put
- 47:06Speaker 2: up big-time numbers. They're down to their fourth, fifth, sixth-string receiver,
- 47:10Speaker 2: and this guy, Isaiah Mizell, has become an absolute stud
- 47:14Speaker 2: for them as a wideout. So I'd probably put Arizona
- 47:17Speaker 2: at five, with Houston on the outside looking in right now.
- 47:19Speaker 2: But I think you're looking at six really good teams,
- 47:21Speaker 2: and there's a reason all six of them are ranked
- 47:22Speaker 2: in the top 25. And I think it speaks to
- 47:26Speaker 2: the potential for the Big 12 to still get two,
- 47:27Speaker 2: maybe even three bids to the college football playoff.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Does Utah win in Cincinnati and head to the Holy
- 47:34Speaker 1: War undefeated?
- 47:36Speaker 2: I believe so. Yeah, I think so. They've made it
- 47:40Speaker 2: this far. There are certainly flaws there that can be exposed.
- 47:44Speaker 2: But ultimately, I trust that defense to get more stops,
- 47:47Speaker 2: and I trust Cincinnati's defense on Utah for sure. And,
- 47:50Speaker 2: you know, again, like I think Utah has done a
- 47:52Speaker 2: really good job adjusting on the fly to what teams
- 47:54Speaker 2: defensively are trying to take away. And, you know, and
- 47:57Speaker 2: then those personnel packages, you know, the pre-snap motion stuff
- 48:02Speaker 2: is so much fun. It's so interesting. It's really hard
- 48:05Speaker 2: to account for. You see all different kinds of formations
- 48:09Speaker 2: and wrinkles each and every week. This past week we
- 48:13Speaker 2: saw Ficklin come in, motion to the backfield.
- 48:15Speaker 8: He does nothing.
- 48:16Speaker 2: Other weeks we've seen him take that pass out of
- 48:19Speaker 2: the backfield and throw the ball down the field. We've
- 48:21Speaker 2: seen him run with it. There's so much they're able
- 48:24Speaker 2: to do that I think makes it really difficult to
- 48:26Speaker 2: defend them. Again, I think Cincinnati's defense has been up
- 48:30Speaker 2: and down, but I think a lot of what happened
- 48:32Speaker 2: with Texas Tech had to do with Texas Tech. It
- 48:34Speaker 2: had not as much to do with Cincinnati.
- 48:37Speaker 1: Ari, you're the man. I always appreciate your time and
- 48:39Speaker 1: your feedback, sir. We'll chat next Monday.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Take care, OC. Be well, brother.
- 48:43Speaker 1: Ari Temkin, best in the business, covering the Big 12 Conference.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Tune in radios at Big 12 today, every day. All right,
- 48:51Speaker 1: some of your feedback on the What You Love, What
- 48:54Speaker 1: You Hate, and then, of course, the Morgan Scali Press Conference.
- 48:58Speaker 1: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 49:03Speaker 5: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 49:07Speaker 5: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 49:16Speaker 3: All right.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Mike on the text line. Great win over Houston. A
- 49:19Speaker 1: very good opponent. I'm just going to enjoy the week
- 49:21Speaker 1: and all that happened last weekend. I think it may
- 49:23Speaker 1: be good next weekend that the time is an early
- 49:25Speaker 1: weekend start time. Suspect it will be a wild one.
- 49:29Speaker 1: We got to make sure we take another break here.
- 49:31Speaker 1: Get to the Morgan Scali press conference. We'll talk more
- 49:34Speaker 1: about the Holy War kicking off at 10. Newsflash, you're
- 49:37Speaker 1: probably not going to like my My take on this,
- 49:40Speaker 1: given the public sentiment so far, we'll get there. Morgan
- 49:44Speaker 1: Scali Press Conference is next. CSPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 49:47Speaker 1: Hot lunch happening here on the Sean O'Connell Show. Zao Cafe.
- 49:56Speaker 1: My order today, I went white rice, double chicken, standard,
- 50:00Speaker 1: the regular natural chicken. They also have orange chicken now. Broccoli,
- 50:04Speaker 1: green curry, all the fixings. I like the pickled chicken.
- 50:09Speaker 1: onions and the pickled carrots and stuff, natural ingredients, healthy options.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Zao is a wonderful place. My kids love it, which
- 50:20Speaker 1: I got one picky eater in the house. So finding
- 50:24Speaker 1: a restaurant that you can get lunch or dinner at
- 50:27Speaker 1: where everyone is happy with an order. Everyone is happy.
- 50:31Speaker 1: You don't have to make the quesadilla or the peanut
- 50:33Speaker 1: butter and jelly sandwich. Holler at our friends at Zao Cafe.
- 50:37Speaker 1: Grab yourself a little Asian fusion. They're presenting the hot
- 50:41Speaker 1: lunch right now, and I love it. Morgan Scali is
- 50:45Speaker 1: ready now at the podium.
- 51:03Speaker 9: Thanks for coming.
- 51:04Speaker 2: Uh.
- 51:07Speaker 10: We've got some rivalry matches coming up this Friday for
- 51:10Speaker 10: volleyball and soccer, both down at BYU Friday night.
- 51:15Speaker 9: Good luck to those teams.
- 51:16Speaker 10: Saturday morning, cross-country, Coach Kepler and crew are going to
- 51:19Speaker 10: be in Oklahoma to run at the Big 12 Championships.
- 51:23Speaker 10: Wish them, obviously, the best there. And it's hard to
- 51:26Speaker 10: believe the basketball season's a week away.
- 51:29Speaker 9: Crazy, right? Men's basketball has already started.
- 51:31Speaker 10: They kick off, I think... It all starts counting. Monday
- 51:34Speaker 10: against Long Beach State. They had a great win over Oregon.
- 51:38Speaker 10: Coach Peterson and the women have Eastern Washington next Tuesday.
- 51:41Speaker 10: So it's almost here. Our recap of the Saturday night game.
- 51:46Speaker 9: Fans were awesome.
- 51:47Speaker 10: Atmosphere is one of the best they've been a part of.
- 51:50Speaker 10: So I can't thank our fans enough for showing up
- 51:55Speaker 10: in a big way. The game in and of itself, obviously,
- 52:00Speaker 10: slow start. Something that we haven't had. I thought we
- 52:04Speaker 10: drove the ball well at times, but definitely things needed
- 52:11Speaker 10: to be corrected at halftime and were. Credit to our
- 52:13Speaker 10: offensive staff for not panicking and working through some stuff.
- 52:19Speaker 9: 226 yards rushing was huge.
- 52:22Speaker 10: Devin with 150, and like I said, I was asked
- 52:25Speaker 10: after the first quarter by Quint Kestnich, you know, is
- 52:29Speaker 10: this sustainable?
- 52:30Speaker 9: I said no, and it was. He kept running.
- 52:34Speaker 10: But that's not obviously what we want. But, you know,
- 52:39Speaker 10: Dev's that competitor. I thought Daniel Bray had a, you know,
- 52:42Speaker 10: for his three carries averaged 11 yards. Really proud of
- 52:46Speaker 10: Daniel running through the tackles, playing physical. And he got
- 52:52Speaker 10: every bit out of his three reps. Uh, rush defense
- 52:58Speaker 10: showed up in a big way, 86 yards rushing to
- 53:00Speaker 10: a team that had been rushing the ball fairly well. Obviously, uh,
- 53:03Speaker 10: those wide receivers are dynamic and I thought we, uh,
- 53:06Speaker 10: did a nice job against them. Uh, the red zone
- 53:09Speaker 10: defense was again, showed up in a, in a huge way.
- 53:12Speaker 10: They were one of three in terms of touchdowns, uh,
- 53:16Speaker 10: tackling overall. I mean, it was just awesome. Open field tackling, uh, linebackers, uh,
- 53:22Speaker 10: safeties that all did a really nice job. Um, Noah Benny,
- 53:26Speaker 10: five catches for 52 yards and made some guys miss,
- 53:29Speaker 10: which is a nice thing. His penalty in the end
- 53:33Speaker 10: zone is the craziest thing I've ever seen. I think
- 53:35Speaker 10: he didn't know that wasn't his teammate.
- 53:39Speaker 9: I think he was trying to celebrate. But anyway, we
- 53:42Speaker 9: love Noah, but we can't have penalties like that. Credit
- 53:45Speaker 9: to our D-line.
- 53:46Speaker 10: I thought we did a really nice job of getting
- 53:48Speaker 10: pressure on the quarterback, forcing him to throw the ball
- 53:51Speaker 10: when he didn't want to throw the ball, getting tips,
- 53:54Speaker 10: getting deflections.
- 53:55Speaker 9: Where we needed him. Lance Holtzclaw was all over the field,
- 53:58Speaker 9: very active. Jai showed up again in a big way.
- 54:01Speaker 10: And obviously the sack force from Jackson Benny was the
- 54:04Speaker 10: big play in the game that kind of put us
- 54:08Speaker 10: in position to end it.
- 54:12Speaker 9: So really just proud of the guys for their fight.
- 54:14Speaker 9: This is one that.
- 54:19Speaker 10: Really good job in preparation. Colton Swan and McGinn, really
- 54:23Speaker 10: good game plans. Obviously, defense showed up all night long
- 54:27Speaker 10: and offense got going in the second half.
- 54:29Speaker 9: We've got a great team in Cincinnati that we're facing.
- 54:32Speaker 10: Obviously, they just beat a top 10 program in the country,
- 54:37Speaker 10: Texas Tech, and they're hosting another one.
- 54:39Speaker 9: So it's going to be a great environment on Halloween.
- 54:43Speaker 10: And we're excited that we're going to have to be
- 54:45Speaker 10: road warriors for the next three out of the four
- 54:49Speaker 10: weeks that we play, and that's something that we're excited about.
- 54:54Speaker 10: Their offense is humming right now, statistically 20th in the
- 54:58Speaker 10: country in total offense, 8th in the country, 2nd to
- 55:01Speaker 10: West Virginia in the Big 12 in terms of rushing offense,
- 55:04Speaker 10: so another game where we're going to have to be
- 55:05Speaker 10: really stout up front. They're 22nd in the country in
- 55:09Speaker 10: pass efficiency offense with a quarterback that's playing really well, confidence. Obviously,
- 55:16Speaker 10: Coach Satterfield's done a great job bringing in a new
- 55:20Speaker 10: quarterback and getting him going.
- 55:21Speaker 9: He's 15th in the country in completion percentage. He's efficient.
- 55:24Speaker 10: They don't turn the ball over. They're doing some really
- 55:26Speaker 10: good things, and they're playing with confidence. They're going to
- 55:28Speaker 10: be playing at their house, in a packed house. So
- 55:30Speaker 10: this is a great challenge for us.
- 55:33Speaker 9: Questions? Who's got?
- 55:35Speaker 3: I got it. Okay.
- 55:37Speaker 9: First off, great win on Saturday.
- 55:38Speaker 11: With your last four games being the toughest part of
- 55:41Speaker 11: your schedule, how.
- 55:41Speaker 9: Do you keep the team focused? And then one of
- 55:43Speaker 9: my concerns is I noticed I was in the, in
- 55:46Speaker 9: the fourth quarter, we lost our composure.
- 55:47Speaker 11: So my question is, what is the plan moving forward to.
- 55:49Speaker 10: Address the issue? Well, um, yeah, guys that, um, start
- 55:54Speaker 10: to lose their composure that, that don't prove, uh, mature
- 55:59Speaker 10: enough to be able to handle it. We, we bring
- 56:01Speaker 10: out of the game and that's what you saw with, uh,
- 56:04Speaker 10: you know, what was going on there. Ultimately, we got
- 56:06Speaker 10: to be more mature in that situation, understand the frustrations, but, uh,
- 56:11Speaker 10: I think our guys do a pretty good job of
- 56:13Speaker 10: policing themselves. Obviously, the one penalty there in the end
- 56:17Speaker 10: zone was not malicious. It was really a mix-up, a
- 56:22Speaker 10: confusing thing there. But I thought our guys did a
- 56:25Speaker 10: pretty good job. And in terms of playing on the road,
- 56:31Speaker 10: that's adversity that you've got to be able to handle.
- 56:36Speaker 10: We do everything we can to simulate crowd noise. And
- 56:40Speaker 10: so I think we.
- 56:41Speaker 9: Prepare our guys. We do a pretty good job of
- 56:45Speaker 9: preparing our guys, but ultimately they've got to show up
- 56:47Speaker 9: on game day and perform.
- 56:48Speaker 10: So I know this is going to be an electric
- 56:51Speaker 10: atmosphere in Cincinnati, and I know our guys are going to.
- 56:54Speaker 9: Be ready for it.
- 56:56Speaker 10: We've got sole ownership of first place in the Big 12,
- 56:59Speaker 10: and you have to have a championship mentality of what
- 57:01Speaker 10: you have. Don't let anyone take away. You know, and
- 57:05Speaker 10: our guys will be prepared and ready to go. So
- 57:09Speaker 10: thanks for that question, brother.
- 57:11Speaker 11: Morgan, in the fourth quarter, you had kind of that
- 57:15Speaker 11: firefighter type drill where you were looking to punt and
- 57:18Speaker 11: then you decided to bring on your offense. Was there
- 57:20Speaker 11: ever a chance that you were going to go for that?
- 57:22Speaker 11: And just kind of what led into that moment where
- 57:24Speaker 11: just kind of trying to bring chaos into their side?
- 57:27Speaker 10: Well, we didn't really get to see the whole thing
- 57:31Speaker 10: play out because they blew the whistle. uh unfortunately the
- 57:35Speaker 10: clock operator had the clock going and so uh i
- 57:40Speaker 10: mean let's just say maybe we run a play maybe
- 57:44Speaker 10: we don't yeah no it's the bottom line is you're
- 57:50Speaker 10: you know you're trying to make sure that you catch
- 57:54Speaker 10: people off guard you know if they're not ready you
- 57:57Speaker 10: have an opportunity um but yeah we just that's something
- 58:02Speaker 10: that we decided we wanted to to try out and
- 58:05Speaker 10: we didn't unfortunately get to see the end of it.
- 58:09Speaker 9: You talked a.
- 58:10Speaker 12: Little bit about just Devin running and that's something that
- 58:13Speaker 12: you kind of want to balance.
- 58:14Speaker 9: I'm curious, it seems like.
- 58:15Speaker 12: It unlocked a little bit, obviously it was non-designed runs
- 58:18Speaker 12: on the scramble drill, but is there a way that
- 58:20Speaker 12: you guys want to implement more design quarterback runs or
- 58:24Speaker 12: maybe even stuff with Bird, just seeing how successful it
- 58:27Speaker 12: was on Saturday?
- 58:29Speaker 10: Yeah, you know, design QB runs, we've got a bunch
- 58:34Speaker 10: of them.
- 58:35Speaker 9: And we have some for Bird.
- 58:38Speaker 10: We also have a very good running back that we
- 58:42Speaker 10: like to get the ball to. Devin's going to end
- 58:46Speaker 10: up running just simply because if teams are going to
- 58:51Speaker 10: crash on the dive.
- 58:52Speaker 9: In option, he's pulling it. He's taught to pull it.
- 58:55Speaker 10: And he's smart enough to know, okay, they're going to
- 59:01Speaker 10: have different.
- 59:02Speaker 9: Ways of handling your read option plays.
- 59:07Speaker 10: Sometimes you're going to crash with your end and you
- 59:10Speaker 10: going to bring that back around on the gap exchange.
- 59:13Speaker 10: He did a really nice job, as well as our
- 59:16Speaker 10: offensive line, of seeing that, handling that, and creasing. So
- 59:21Speaker 10: a lot of his yards weren't necessarily Devin saying, I'm
- 59:24Speaker 10: going to put the team on my back. It's just
- 59:26Speaker 10: him taking care of his responsibility. But there are those
- 59:30Speaker 10: times where he does say, I feel I'm the best
- 59:36Speaker 10: player on the field and I'm going to make this happen.
- 59:41Speaker 9: When you're playing with a guy like that that's so competitive.
- 59:43Speaker 10: And 90% of the time he's going to be right,
- 59:47Speaker 10: it's hard to... There's two kinds of players that you
- 59:51Speaker 10: struggle with. The first is those that never do anything
- 59:56Speaker 10: that you tell them to do. And then the second
- 59:58Speaker 10: type are the ones that only can do what you
- 1:00:01Speaker 10: tell them to do, meaning they can't ad lib. They
- 1:00:04Speaker 10: don't know, okay, I can take a chance here based
- 1:00:07Speaker 10: on what I see, based on film study.
- 1:00:10Speaker 9: And so he's really, really smart.
- 1:00:12Speaker 10: And we don't want to put the handcuffs on if
- 1:00:17Speaker 10: he's going to continue to make plays for us.
- 1:00:19Speaker 9: So the offense does a really good job of balancing
- 1:00:22Speaker 9: that out.
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: On Saturday you talked about beware of the soothing sounds
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: of praise. As a program, how do you make sure
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: your players aren't buying into the hype, and how do
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: you do that as a program?
- 1:00:37Speaker 10: Make sure that they understand what wins and loses football
- 1:00:40Speaker 10: games and what's on film, that nothing people say determines
- 1:00:45Speaker 10: football games. You get teams that have unbelievable big wins,
- 1:00:52Speaker 10: emotional wins, wins, and then the next week, you know,
- 1:00:56Speaker 10: you have the letdown effect. And so, you know, again,
- 1:01:00Speaker 10: we're just going to continue to preach that every game
- 1:01:05Speaker 10: is a championship game because it's.
- 1:01:08Speaker 9: Hard to win.
- 1:01:09Speaker 10: There's parity. You don't know what other teams' motivations are.
- 1:01:14Speaker 10: And when teams are playing ranked teams, they're going to
- 1:01:17Speaker 10: bring it. They're going to be more excited, you know,
- 1:01:20Speaker 10: whatever that is. So, We just have to be us,
- 1:01:24Speaker 10: and we've got to do it week after week after week,
- 1:01:26Speaker 10: day after day after day, and this is the only
- 1:01:28Speaker 10: game that matters.
- 1:01:30Speaker 9: Coach, I'm curious.
- 1:01:32Speaker 13: Devin scores the touchdown to go up seven with.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Just over two minutes left.
- 1:01:36Speaker 11: Was it ever a consideration to go for two and
- 1:01:38Speaker 11: make it a two-possession game there?
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: No.
- 1:01:43Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:01:46Speaker 10: Defense was playing really well. That's not, in my opinion,
- 1:01:49Speaker 10: a time to go for two. Others will disagree, but
- 1:01:57Speaker 10: with our defense, go ahead, drive the length in the field,
- 1:02:00Speaker 10: and then if you score, you have to get a
- 1:02:03Speaker 10: two-point conversion, and then we go into overtime.
- 1:02:06Speaker 9: I believe in our guys at that point, obviously.
- 1:02:09Speaker 13: Where do you feel your team can improve the most
- 1:02:13Speaker 13: between now and the rest of the season?
- 1:02:16Speaker 10: There were some things on the offensive line in terms
- 1:02:18Speaker 10: of IDing stunts and Some things up front that I
- 1:02:22Speaker 10: thought we did a better job of in the second half.
- 1:02:26Speaker 9: We can't turn the ball over.
- 1:02:28Speaker 10: There's them taking the ball away, and then there's us
- 1:02:31Speaker 10: turning it over just with bad decision-making, and we've had
- 1:02:34Speaker 10: a couple of those. So those are two off the
- 1:02:38Speaker 10: top of my head. Defensively, communication in combo coverages. stuff
- 1:02:46Speaker 10: like that, maybe a little bit more disguising what we're doing. But, yeah,
- 1:02:53Speaker 10: I mean, our coach is doing a really good job
- 1:02:56Speaker 10: game by game. It's just something different that shows up,
- 1:02:59Speaker 10: and you just try and correct it as you go.
- 1:03:02Speaker 14: Morgan, I'm curious your thoughts on Lucas Tamsula. He played
- 1:03:04Speaker 14: his most snaps of the season versus Houston, and he
- 1:03:08Speaker 14: had that big stuff on one of their run plays.
- 1:03:11Speaker 14: How have you seen him maybe– get more comfortable since
- 1:03:14Speaker 14: when he stepped on campus to now that it's allowing
- 1:03:16Speaker 14: him to have added reps?
- 1:03:18Speaker 10: Well, I think he's done a great job of, first
- 1:03:21Speaker 10: of all, you know, learning our scheme. Coach Ellis is
- 1:03:27Speaker 10: fantastic with technique. He was continually playing with inside hands
- 1:03:32Speaker 10: and vertical leverage.
- 1:03:33Speaker 9: The guy's strong as an ox.
- 1:03:36Speaker 10: And it just so happened that we faced a lot
- 1:03:38Speaker 10: of goal line problems short yardage situations where we needed
- 1:03:42Speaker 10: that strength, and he showed up in a big way.
- 1:03:45Speaker 9: Really proud of Lucas.
- 1:03:47Speaker 8: Morgan, what do you like best about the way your
- 1:03:48Speaker 8: front seven's playing right now?
- 1:03:49Speaker 11: Best rush defense in the Big 12, and what type
- 1:03:51Speaker 11: of challenges does the Cincinnati offensive line present this week?
- 1:03:55Speaker 10: I would say that I'm most proud of us playing
- 1:03:58Speaker 10: with really good technique. Technique is what allows you to win.
- 1:04:03Speaker 10: You can just be physically superior to an opponent, but
- 1:04:06Speaker 10: really when you're playing good on good, you better have
- 1:04:10Speaker 10: Fantastic technique. You watch Lance Holtzclaw and how disruptive he was.
- 1:04:15Speaker 10: It's him taking on tight ends correctly with inside hands,
- 1:04:20Speaker 10: getting knockback.
- 1:04:21Speaker 9: Knocking off pullers.
- 1:04:23Speaker 10: So the technique that our guys, our coaches, are holding
- 1:04:26Speaker 10: our guys accountable to, that's what's allowing them to play
- 1:04:30Speaker 10: so well. The effort is there. They're relentless to the football.
- 1:04:35Speaker 10: You look at, let's see. There was a deep pass
- 1:04:41Speaker 10: to zero. And Rabbit Evans runs it down. If Rabbit
- 1:04:47Speaker 10: Evans doesn't take off once he sees that, the guy
- 1:04:51Speaker 10: scores a touchdown. He takes off, tackles him, and then
- 1:04:55Speaker 10: I believe, I don't know if it was three plays later,
- 1:04:57Speaker 10: they're forced to kick a field goal. I mean, that's huge.
- 1:05:02Speaker 10: And you've got to go back to that. You've got
- 1:05:03Speaker 10: to promote it. And your guys have to see how
- 1:05:05Speaker 10: valuable that is. okay, that wasn't my mistake, that wasn't
- 1:05:10Speaker 10: my guy, but I'm going to take off, and I'm
- 1:05:12Speaker 10: going to go, and he makes that tackle, and they
- 1:05:16Speaker 10: don't get seven. So I think that happened somewhere else
- 1:05:20Speaker 10: in the game, maybe with the quarterback. But that's just
- 1:05:23Speaker 10: so important, and it's a huge part of the game
- 1:05:26Speaker 10: that if you don't focus on, that is a touchdown.
- 1:05:29Speaker 10: So really proud of those guys. What was the back
- 1:05:32Speaker 10: end of your question? Just the challenge they presented.
- 1:05:35Speaker 9: Very athletic. Very sound. Well taught. And they get after it.
- 1:05:44Speaker 9: They're a physical bunch.
- 1:05:45Speaker 10: So the challenge is no different than any physical front
- 1:05:49Speaker 10: that you play. Can you play with better technique? Can
- 1:05:53Speaker 10: you match that intensity? They don't do it a lot
- 1:05:59Speaker 10: in terms of tails and stuff. You give stuff away.
- 1:06:02Speaker 9: So you just got to get on good and here
- 1:06:03Speaker 9: we go, who's going to play with better technique?
- 1:06:08Speaker 12: How did Houston limit Weishan in the run game, and
- 1:06:12Speaker 12: what do you have to do figuring you'll see.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: More of that down the road?
- 1:06:16Speaker 10: I think they, you know, well, a lot of it
- 1:06:18Speaker 10: was they wanted to crash down. They were like, okay,
- 1:06:21Speaker 10: Weishan's not going to beat us. And so, you know,
- 1:06:25Speaker 10: what you have to do is, you know, maybe some
- 1:06:29Speaker 10: different things in terms of disguising how you're going to
- 1:06:32Speaker 10: run the ball. some more gap scheme stuff that's not
- 1:06:37Speaker 10: necessarily a QB pull or an option read. But, you know,
- 1:06:41Speaker 10: they were basically saying we want him to pull it,
- 1:06:45Speaker 10: we want him to pitch it, and Devin was doing
- 1:06:47Speaker 10: a really good job of making that work.
- 1:06:51Speaker 13: Morgan, on that Houston touchdown drive, it took Houston. They
- 1:06:54Speaker 13: got to the 14-yard line. And then it took them
- 1:06:57Speaker 13: nine plays to actually get it into the end zone.
- 1:06:59Speaker 13: As a coach who talks about your culture all the time,
- 1:07:02Speaker 13: being relentless, was that a moment where they're coming off
- 1:07:05Speaker 13: the field that you're proud of the fight that they
- 1:07:07Speaker 13: put up?
- 1:07:07Speaker 9: Oh, no question. Yeah, but again, look at the film.
- 1:07:11Speaker 10: It's guys playing with great technique, coming off the ball.
- 1:07:15Speaker 10: You get in the red zone, and you have to
- 1:07:17Speaker 10: play on their side of scrimmage. And at times, you're
- 1:07:23Speaker 10: going to have to take chances. um that's why you
- 1:07:27Speaker 10: see so often uh in in football in the red
- 1:07:30Speaker 10: zone you know tight ends wide open because you took
- 1:07:33Speaker 10: a chance there's a pop pass or you know stuff
- 1:07:35Speaker 10: like that but you know uh.
- 1:07:38Speaker 9: Really proud of our guys they.
- 1:07:41Speaker 10: They knew that this was going to be a battle
- 1:07:42Speaker 10: this is a complete team that we were playing and
- 1:07:44Speaker 10: and and they brought it so great job by those
- 1:07:48Speaker 10: guys In.
- 1:07:49Speaker 11: That first half, the right side of your offensive line
- 1:07:52Speaker 11: was not handling the pressure as well. What changed in
- 1:07:55Speaker 11: the second half that allowed you to stabilize that and
- 1:07:57Speaker 11: allow the offense to function a little bit better?
- 1:08:00Speaker 9: Just better communication.
- 1:08:01Speaker 10: Better communication from the offensive line, the tight.
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: Ends.
- 1:08:06Speaker 10: There were a couple times in the first half where
- 1:08:08Speaker 10: we flipped protections where we shouldn't have and that's going
- 1:08:10Speaker 10: to cause free hitters to come. Much better communication in
- 1:08:15Speaker 10: the second half and That's another group, man, right there.
- 1:08:19Speaker 9: Watch that film and watch them finish.
- 1:08:21Speaker 10: Watch them push our running backs forward, our wide receivers forward,
- 1:08:25Speaker 10: run down the field.
- 1:08:27Speaker 9: I love that crew. The old block is doing a
- 1:08:29Speaker 9: really nice job.
- 1:08:30Speaker 12: Morgan, Kelvin Obok was listed as an out.
- 1:08:36Speaker 9: I'm just curious, how is he progressing in week two
- 1:08:38Speaker 9: of the injury.
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: And do you have a timetable on when he might return?
- 1:08:42Speaker 9: No timetable. He's not out for the season. But we're
- 1:08:45Speaker 9: still getting.
- 1:08:47Speaker 10: a second opinion on things and just to see give
- 1:08:52Speaker 10: him options as to what he wants to do there
- 1:08:55Speaker 10: is a possibility that he could be done for the
- 1:08:57Speaker 10: season depending on what that looks like you know what
- 1:08:59Speaker 10: that opinion comes back as.
- 1:09:00Speaker 9: But for right now, there's still a possibility he plays.
- 1:09:03Speaker 8: Take one more from Joe.
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: Obviously, you guys do so much with film watching and
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: the eye test. I'm curious, analytically and statistically, what are
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: some of the stats that are predictive of success.
- 1:09:17Speaker 9: That you use a lot in your programs? Ah, okay. So,
- 1:09:24Speaker 9: you want to win? Score points.
- 1:09:26Speaker 10: Scoring offense is always going to be one of the
- 1:09:28Speaker 10: top statistics. Scoring defense, conversely, right?
- 1:09:34Speaker 9: Rush defense.
- 1:09:37Speaker 10: Rush offense, interestingly enough, doesn't show up as a big
- 1:09:44Speaker 10: stat for your top teams in the country. Now, yards
- 1:09:48Speaker 10: per rush, different story. So, are you rushing the ball efficiently?
- 1:09:52Speaker 10: Same thing, passing the ball. Are you passing the ball efficiently? Uh,
- 1:09:56Speaker 10: passing yards that, that will never, uh, show up. I mean,
- 1:10:00Speaker 10: it rarely shows up in your top programs, turnover margin.
- 1:10:04Speaker 10: They're really good at it. I think they're 14th in
- 1:10:06Speaker 10: the country and they're not turning the ball over and
- 1:10:09Speaker 10: then conversely taking the ball away. So that shows up, uh,
- 1:10:13Speaker 10: punt return yards. That's the number one special.
- 1:10:15Speaker 9: Team statistic that you look at.
- 1:10:17Speaker 10: Uh, probably because you're forcing teams to punt the ball,
- 1:10:22Speaker 10: but also you're flipping the field in terms of the
- 1:10:24Speaker 10: yards that you're gaining. So punt return yards shows up.
- 1:10:28Speaker 10: A good amount of them, when you look at it,
- 1:10:34Speaker 10: really are on the defensive side of the ball. That's
- 1:10:35Speaker 10: why playing great defense is so huge and protecting the football.
- 1:10:41Speaker 10: Chunk yardage plays shows up quite a bit. But we'll
- 1:10:45Speaker 10: have to sit down, Joe. I've got a nice little sheet.
- 1:10:48Speaker 10: that I can show you from studying the top teams
- 1:10:52Speaker 10: in college football over the last 20 years.
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 1:10:57Speaker 9: All right.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: That's Morgan Scali's weekly press conference. If you didn't get
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: a chance to catch the whole thing live with us,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: maybe you're just tuning in now. No stress. It'll be
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: available at ESPN, 700 sports.com and in the on-demand section
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: of the ESPN 700 app, which I'm sure all of
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: you are. have as your number one app used on
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: social media and on your phones. I like that last
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: question because it allows you to drive home a couple
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: things about this Utah football team. Morgan Scali talking about
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: the stats that matter most and the stats that maybe
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: can be a little bit misleading. He mentioned scoring offense
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: and scoring defense, of course. Right now, Utah, darn it,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: they've dropped to the number two scoring offense list in
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: the conference, Oklahoma state had a big day. They scored what? 57,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: I think against Colorado this weekend. So Oklahoma state is
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: now the number one scoring offense in the conference. They've
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: got 40 points per game. Utah drops to number two
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: at 37.4 points per game. Arizona is three. Houston is
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: for West Virginia is five. So even scoring offense can,
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: is not the greatest indicator of, of, overall success because
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: West Virginia is still in that top category. Uh, TCU
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: is the top scoring defense in the conference. Again, these,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: these statistics by themselves can't tell a full story because
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: the final score of a game is really the only
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: stat that matters week to week. But TCU is struggling.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: TCU actually surprises the heck out of me. The kind
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: of year that they're having, they are one in three
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: in conference play. They are three and four overall, uh,
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: And they have the top scoring defense in the conference.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: Isn't that strange? Their first game, they held North Carolina
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: to 15 points, ended up losing. Their next two games
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: were against Grambling in Arkansas State. They gave up a
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: touchdown each in those games. In a loss to UCF,
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: they still only gave up 21 points. In a loss
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: to BYU, they still only gave up 17 points. They
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: beat Baylor and held Baylor to six points, and then
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: they lost to West Virginia, and that's a 24-point game
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: for West Virginia. So defensively, TCU is playing winning football. Offensively,
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: they are not. Utah is number two in both scoring
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: offense and scoring defense in the conference right now, and
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: you saw this in the NFL this weekend where the
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: Giants and J.J. McCarthy made a very direct point about
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: it when interviewed yesterday. He's like, this is complimentary football.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: The defense gets the stops. Arvel Reese is one of
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: the biggest hustle players in the NFL this year, and
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: he is a star. He's an absolute freak. He's a
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: top draft pick. He's the kind of guy that, you know,
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: sometimes you see them not run a ball down from behind,
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: and he's doing it at the highest level. Cam Scadaboo
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: is running so hard that he's getting unnecessary roughness penalties,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: which was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: But complementary football is so massively important. And right now,
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Utah is playing complementary football. Now, special teams kind of
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: needs to catch up, to keep up with what offense
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: and defense are doing right now. I have thoughts about
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: why Utah that, you know, for two decades, special teams
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: was a massively important part of their success. And it's
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: just kind of ho-hum now. missed field goal this last
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: week they have had a couple of issues and punt
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: returns uh thankfully the kick coverage has been a lot
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: better this year uh the kickoffs most of them have
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: gone out of the opponent's end zone and been touchbacks
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: which is better than giving a team a chance anyway
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: really interesting stuff from morgan scali at the end of
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: that press conference and We're going to have to now, collectively,
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: we're going to have to figure out how to react
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: to Cincinnati because Cincinnati is good enough to beat you,
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: and Cincinnati is sandwiched between a ranked Houston team and
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: a ranked BYU and a ranked Arizona. So you've got
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: this Cincinnati matchup that is the classic trap spot. It's
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: both an emotional letdown game on the road after Houston,
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: and it's a look-ahead spot because you've got your rivalry
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: game at 10 a.m. The next week, which by the way,
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: Utah is going to play Cincinnati. Thankfully, Cincinnati is a
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: day game because that game kicks off at 1 45 PM.
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: If Cincinnati were a night game and Utah got home
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: at four or 5 AM on Sunday morning, and then
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: they had, I mean, it effectively takes away an entire
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: 24 hours of rest. in that case, because now you're
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: playing early on Saturday, too. Still, we'll discuss more of
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: the kickoff time for BYU, which was just announced today.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: If you're just tuning in, the Holy War is going
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: to be a 10 a.m. local kickoff. We'll talk about
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: the how and the why of that and much more
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: in the Daily Dump, which is coming next. It's the
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. Feeling
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: out of the loop?
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: Let's catch up on today's biggest headlines in the Daily
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number
- 1:16:47Speaker 5: one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM. Brought to you by
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Just look for the truck
- 1:16:55Speaker 5: with the duck.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling for your excavation needs or your.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: Drain cleaning needs or your furnace problems or that air
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: conditioner that now that you don't really need it so
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: much anymore, you can figure out why it was rattling
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: all summer long. Valley plumbing, heating, cooling, and excavation. They'll
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: take care of all of it. The truck with the duck.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: Look for them. Tell them OC sent you. Okay. Big
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: story today. I'm actually bothered. I'm actually bothered that this
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: is a story today. Because Utah's coming off of its
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: biggest win of the season. The reaction to that should be,
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: all right, what did we learn about this team? We
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: learned about their ability to make plays. We learned about
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: the fact that they don't have to be overly dependent
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: on hot starts. Houston was the first team that stopped
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: them on their opening possession of the game. Heading into Saturday,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: Utah was six for six offensively, not only scoring on
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: the first drive, but scoring touchdowns on the first drive.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: And that was one of the concerns, if you had
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: any concerns, that was one that you could bring up.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: Is this team full of frontrunners? They hadn't really dealt
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: with a ton of trailing. They hadn't dealt with a
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: ton of adversity from a more traditional college football sense.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: You finally trailed a little bit against Colorado and had
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: to come back somewhat in that one. In this game,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: you trailed for real. Utah had to pull themselves up
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: by the bootstraps. They showed us. for the first time
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: in the 2026 season, they're capable of doing that. Now
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: we have plenty to digest from this game. I mean,
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: I could sit and talk all day long and we're
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: going to have Jeff Schwartz on tomorrow and he's going
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: to talk with us about that blitz and the blocking
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: assignments where the offensive line and the running back can't
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: be right. According to Jeff, the quarterback is responsible for
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: the second blitzer where he's got to diagnose that that
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: blitz is coming. Know that he doesn't have numbers that
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: are going to be able to block that up because
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: you're your right guard is not going to be able
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: to peel back, or your right tackle, when John O'Hall
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: bails out of the formation when he's not rushing, where
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: it looks like he was going to rush pre-snap, he's
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: not going to be able to peel back across the
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: formation in time to block Jackson Benny. So actually, the
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: quarterback is responsible for getting the ball out or making
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: that guy miss. And Connor Wegman had absolutely no chance
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: because that was a lightning strike by Jackson Benny. And ultimately...
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: Wegman coughs up the ball, Jaimoah is able to recover,
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: and Utah scores on the next play. Now, you can
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: be nitpicky and you can talk about clock management and
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: whether or not Devin Dampier should have scored on the
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: first play from scrimmage after that or whether or not
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: Utah should have gone for two to salt the game
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: away there. Oregon Scali informed us in his press conference
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: and in the answers there that, look, I trust my defense.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: I'd rather... Be up eight and say, go ahead and
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: try and score on us. Try and score twice on
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: us because you have to score a touchdown, then a
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: scoring play on the two-point conversion. He'd rather do that
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: than go in tied. Makes perfect sense. We should be
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: talking about all this today. And the BYU kickoff time
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: drops and a bunch of Utah fans, most Utah fans,
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: it seems, according to the reaction on social media and
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: elsewhere here on the text line.
- 1:20:35Speaker 6: At least the Utah fans online and on the text line.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: Well, I don't like this. I get it. It's not perfect,
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: but it is the showcase time slot available for the
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: Holy War. Now, this is a coin flip for me
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: because the Holy War is an incredible rivalry game. I
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: did a show with a betting network this weekend. I
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: was a guest on a betting network on Saturday morning,
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: and the hosts were asking me about the nature of
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: the Holy war. This was not for on air stuff.
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: This was the curiosity of a pair of hosts who
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: do betting radio in Las Vegas. They were trying, they
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: were asking me like, how intense is this rivalry? This
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: is before we recorded the segment. Like, tell me why
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: it's a great rivalry. And I was trying to explain
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: to them the cultural nuance and how there's so many
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: homes where like mom is a Ute dad is a
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: Cougar vice versa. Uh, Or generational thing where parents went
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: to BYU, kids go to Utah or vice versa. And
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: that's not as common with other rivalries, certainly as with
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: like Duke and North Carolina. But when you talk about
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: Texas and Oklahoma, you don't hear that stuff as often.
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: USC and Notre Dame, that doesn't happen very often. The
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: proximity of these schools, all of it, right? This rivalry
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: game is so unique and so incredible, but it is ours,
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: and it's only ever going to be ours. As much
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: as we want everyone else in the country to pat
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: us on the back and say you have one of
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: the best rivalries, they're not going to understand it. And
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: showcasing this game at 10 a.m. local noon Eastern time
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: means there's going to be more national eyeballs on the game.
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: That's why Brett Yormark wants it here. That's probably why
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: Mark Harlan wants it here. That's probably why the university
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: of Utah and BYU are both happy about it being there.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: I understand why fans are kind of like, yeah, but
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: I want to go to the game and I don't
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: want to have to get on the road from Provo
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: at 7 30 AM to go to this game.
- 1:22:38Speaker 8: Fine.
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: I don't have to go set up my tailgate thing
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: the night before and make breakfast at the tailgate. Well,
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: why not? Breakfast tailgates are incredible. The thing for me
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: is anytime, anywhere, any weather, any television network, this game
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: belongs to us and us only. This is Utah's game.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: This is the beehive state, the most important day on
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: the sports calendar every year and trying to expand it
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: to a nationally relevant game is happening this year because
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: they're going to be top 10 teams playing against one another.
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, even people watching
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: that top 10 matchup are not going to view it
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: the same way they view the The iron bowl. They're
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: not going to look at it. Like it's USC, Notre Dame.
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: They're not even going to look at it. Like it's the,
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: on the same day, Oregon, Ohio state is being played.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: People are going to look at that game and say, Oh,
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: that one, that's two big boy brands in college football.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: So trying to, to do this with it, frustrates me
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: to some extent but that's as far as it goes
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: i don't care when this game kicks off it is
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: going to be the best game and if you're worried
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: about there's a bunch of people texting oh it's going
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: to be a crap showing for the holy war now
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: that's up to you that's up to me this one
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: is at rice echo stadium you're allowed to drink coffee
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: as a ute probably Get up, grab a Diet Mountain
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: Dew if you're a member of the Church of Jesus
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: Christ of Latter-day Saints, grab a coffee if you're not,
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: and get your butt in your seat at 9.45 a.m.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: and make the atmosphere what it's supposed to be. If
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: you believe that Utah football is dependent on a full
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: moon to be good and for the atmosphere to be good,
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: then you don't think Utah football is good. This is
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: a team of young men, not werewolves. that require moonshine
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: to get themselves going. You got to play when the
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: game is. If they told you, hey, we're kicking this
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: one off at midnight, guess what? Complain about it, but
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: you better show up. This is now a nationally televised
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: showcase opportunity for Utah and for BYU. And it's for
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: Utah or BYU because the winner gets talked about. The
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: winner gets attention. The winner gets gets the spoils. The loser,
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: it's not going to be everyone saying, hey, wasn't that
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: such a wonderful game? Wasn't that such an intense atmosphere?
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: Isn't that incredible how these two teams have one of
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: these really unique rivalries in college football? That is not
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: how the national media is ever going to treat this thing.
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: Like Joel Klatt, he kind of knows a little bit.
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: So he pushes that. Kirk Herbstreet tries to stump for that.
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: But I was listening to Dan Patrick this morning, right?
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: And they're not really good at talking college sports. They're
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: very much a pro sports show. But they still do it, right?
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: And guess what game they didn't mention at bleeping all?
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: There was not word one. There was not a whisper.
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: There was not a fart. There was nothing about Utah
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: versus Houston. That was the ESPN College Game Day Game
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: of the Week. That was.
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: A top 15 matchup. And do you know why they
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: didn't mention it? Because it was on after they went
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: to bed.
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:26:11Speaker 6: That's a they're in Connecticut. That was a 10 30
- 1:26:16Speaker 6: kickoff for that's right.
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: That kicked off at 10 30. They didn't watch it.
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: None of them, the back row, the front row, Dan Patrick,
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: they didn't see it. And that has happened with every
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: Utah game this year, basically. So you get your rivalry
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: game and you get it when now those people are
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: going to be watching it and those people are going
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: to be talking about it. They're going to be forced
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: to because it's a top 10 game, which is why
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: ESPN or ABC is going to take it in that
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: time slot, noon Eastern, which is why Brett, your mark
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: in order to justify not putting this as the last
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: game of the year says we better get it on
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: national television. And when, by the way, internally, we were
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: having this discussion last week, about Utah only getting night games,
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: guess what the two options for this game were? You
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: could be in the morning, because we already mentioned this, James.
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: You can be in the morning. You can go up
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: against the other ranked versus ranked SEC Big Ten matchups
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: of the day and be on ESPN News, or you
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: can have prime location, prime broadcast spot on ESPN, on
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: the big network, At, you guessed it, 8.30 local, 8.15 p.m.
- 1:27:32Speaker 8: Local.
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: So you got either the morning or another night game.
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: And guess what Utah, internally and externally, was complaining about
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: for the last three times? Why are we always at night?
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: Why are we always at night? We don't want to
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: be at night. We want people to see us. The
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: university's priorities for showcasing the university and your priorities as
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: a fan are not the same priorities. I hate that
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: that's true. They want this game in front of as
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: many people as possible. And the as many people as
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: possible time slot for November 7th in the year of
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: our Lord 2026 ends up being... 10 AM local. And
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: guess what? If you believe this team is college football,
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: playoff bound, big 12 championship bound. You better be able
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: to play at 6 AM at 8 AM at 10
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: AM at one 45 at five 30 at at midnight,
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: at 8.30, whenever. Conditions should not matter. Grogginess, sleep, all
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: that stuff, they affect both teams the same. And by
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: the way, this is a home game. So for BYU
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: and for BYU fans, it's much worse.
- 1:29:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:29:04Speaker 6: And listen, there's Utah fans all up and down the
- 1:29:07Speaker 6: Wasatch front. There's many in Utah County that are going
- 1:29:09Speaker 6: to have to be inconvenienced.
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: By this travel.
- 1:29:12Speaker 6: But as you said, it's a, it's a home game.
- 1:29:16Speaker 6: So you, you think the vast majority of people in
- 1:29:20Speaker 6: that stadium are going to be closer to the stadium.
- 1:29:23Speaker 6: So it, You're not having to travel near as much
- 1:29:25Speaker 6: unless you happen to be a season ticket holder that
- 1:29:27Speaker 6: lives in Utah County somewhere. And I don't know. I've
- 1:29:34Speaker 6: never liked the complaining about kickoff times OC. I think
- 1:29:38Speaker 6: that that being said, I think that the 815 is
- 1:29:41Speaker 6: the absolute worst one. 815 or later is the absolute
- 1:29:44Speaker 6: worst one for teams out this way. Mountain Time and
- 1:29:49Speaker 6: Pacific Time Zone because it's no one's watching those games.
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: 10 a.m.
- 1:29:55Speaker 6: Is not the worst. I don't even think it's the
- 1:29:59Speaker 6: second worst. I think it's because of big noon kickoff,
- 1:30:03Speaker 6: this is not going to be a big noon kickoff game.
- 1:30:04Speaker 6: They're not even going to have the show there. They've
- 1:30:06Speaker 6: announced it'll be the Army game because it's the game
- 1:30:09Speaker 6: before Veterans Day, so they're doing their salute to armed forces,
- 1:30:12Speaker 6: I guess. But the big noon kickoff, what they have
- 1:30:17Speaker 6: done to the exposure of the noon Eastern game, the
- 1:30:21Speaker 6: 10 a.m. local game here in the Mountain Time Zone,
- 1:30:24Speaker 6: is they've told everyone who votes in the polls, the
- 1:30:28Speaker 6: college football playoff committee, everyone who watches college football across
- 1:30:32Speaker 6: the country, that you better be paying attention to the
- 1:30:35Speaker 6: first game of the day. And they will be in
- 1:30:38Speaker 6: this top 10 matchup. Get up a little earlier. It's
- 1:30:40Speaker 6: going to be fun.
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: Game day is probably going to come back for this, maybe, potentially. Yeah,
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: we'll see. There's a bunch of big games. You mentioned
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: all the big games, so we'll see about that. And
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: you know what? If they do... You know, it will
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: fuel you as a fan to get out of bed,
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: show up on set and lustily boo Pat McAfee for
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: his cantankerous approach towards Utah and keep it on at
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: the end of the day, this holy war game, which
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: by the way, you can't overlook Cincinnati to get to.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: And the team won't, we as fans can do whatever
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: we want. Play it at 10 AM. And it's still
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: the best game of the year. And if you don't
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: think your team is going to show up and be
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: the best version of itself at 10 AM, then you
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: don't believe in Morgan Scali. You don't believe in Sharif Shah.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: You don't think that Kevin McGiven is the right guy.
- 1:31:31Speaker 6: And BYU fans, same thing. I'm sure there's plenty of
- 1:31:34Speaker 6: BYU fans that don't like this either. Like you got
- 1:31:38Speaker 6: to believe that your team's good enough to win at
- 1:31:40Speaker 6: any time slot either against your biggest rival.
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: My, my preference for me is the fan, right? night game.
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: Let's go. You know why? Because then I can hang
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: out with my kids all day and they're young enough
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: that at seven o'clock or whatever, I'm like, Hey, time
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: to start getting ready for bed. Dad has got to
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: go to the game. You know what I mean? And
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: it's wonderful because I get to spend as much time
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: as possible at home. And then I get to go
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: enjoy the game. And when I get home, everyone's asleep
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: and you don't have to worry about anything else for
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: me as a fan. That's great. That's wonderful. Mark Harlan
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: and company decided they don't want more of those this year.
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: And you're not getting one. This is the holy war
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: people show up, stand up, be excited about it. Whatever
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: it is. When you want, you want the nation.
- 1:32:34Speaker 6: To be paying attention to this game, especially because both
- 1:32:36Speaker 6: teams are probably going to be right here.
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: That's the thing is like, I don't give a bleep.
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: If there's somebody in Connecticut watching the Holy war, I
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: really don't because if they love it, great. If they
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: hate it, great. Doesn't affect us at all. Doesn't affect
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: a dang thing. It's not going to magically make people
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: respect the big 12 conference more. The only thing that's
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: going to do that is teams showing up and winning
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: in the college football playoff from the big 12 conference.
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: And even then it's going to take two or three
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: years of that before the narrative changes at all. So again,
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: I don't care, but the decision makers, the leaders that
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: have to worry about things like enrollment and endowment and exposure,
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: they have to care. So I'll take it. I'll understand
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: the reasons behind it. And most importantly, the, I'll be
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: there with bells on, just like all of you. So
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: don't complain about it. You can't complain about nights and
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: complain about mornings and expect that you're only going to
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: get 130 or 530 kickoffs, guys. You can't. End of rant.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: I know you don't like to be lectured at, but
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: I'm just a bad person, so I do it anyway.
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: Monday Night Football preview coming next. It's the Sean O'Connell
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:34:03Speaker 5: You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 1:34:06Speaker 5: the best youth football coverage.
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: Here's O.C.
- 1:34:08Speaker 5: From the Murdoch Hyundai Studio on ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: You're watching the World Series tonight, Game 3 in Tampa,
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: starting 5.30 on your home of the Fall Classic right here.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: Brewers do lead the series. Two to zero. Rays will
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: try to get one back at home. Or there's Monday
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: Night Football. Eagles versus Cowboys. 6-15 kickoff. ESPN, ABC, Disney +.
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: And a divisional matchup that... I mean, look. You got
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: your traditional rivalry situation and that kind of juice to it.
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: But beyond that, the Philadelphia Eagles stink. The Dallas Cowboys stink.
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: The Eagles, you could make a pretty easy argument or
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: even worse. They've got an absolutely abysmal scoring differential. They're
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: technically second in the division right now. But they're minus 31.
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: The Chargers are worse. The Titans are worse. The Saints
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: are worse. The Cardinals are worse. That is bottom of
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: every division type number. And somehow in the NFC East,
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: it works out for now for the Philadelphia Eagles. Dallas,
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: same record, 2-4 on the season, 1-2 in the division,
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: and a team that will never win anything for the
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: rest of my life, and I think I'm okay with that.
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: I think I'm excited about that. Bold prediction. I'm a
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: 49ers fan. I think that I shouldn't say it that
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: way because who knows what might happen. So here's the
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: reason I say it, because Jerry Jones.
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: Is a terrible identifier of player talent, but he's also
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: a terrible identifier of leadership talent to put in his
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: own organization. And it kind of makes sense because he
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: thinks he's smarter than everyone and he wants people that
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: he has decided are also smart like him. So then
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: the people that end up in that spot are either
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: going to be his own children, guess who they're like,
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: or they're going to be people that he handpicks, guess
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: who they're like, And the results are going to be
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: the same. And I don't think that they're ever going
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: to sell the Dallas Cowboys to any other family because
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: it's like owning a cash printer in your own house.
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: So I actually do believe that the Dallas Cowboys are
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: going to be this, some version of this, for the
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: rest of my life.
- 1:36:42Speaker 6: And I'm totally okay with it. You think even after
- 1:36:45Speaker 6: Jerry Jones... dies however many years in the future, you think,
- 1:36:49Speaker 6: because it's going to just be handed down to probably
- 1:36:51Speaker 6: Stephen Jones or one of his other children and it'll
- 1:36:54Speaker 6: just be the same?
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: I don't disagree. I mean, if it were one of
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: those things where, like, you know, he would have sold
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: by now if he was going to sell. He's in
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: his 80s, right?
- 1:37:06Speaker 6: He probably wants it to be like the Buss family, which,
- 1:37:10Speaker 6: by the way, that's not going well in the second generation,
- 1:37:13Speaker 6: but he probably has that envision of, like, what the
- 1:37:15Speaker 6: bus family was for the Lakers where it's like, no,
- 1:37:17Speaker 6: we're not selling this.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: This is a family heirloom. Which by the way, is
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: exactly what I would do if I were in that position.
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: I mean, there's the return on investment now based on
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: what he bought the Cowboys for to what he could
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: sell the Cowboys for would be like however many hundreds
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: of X. So maybe the kids will get together at
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: some point. We're like, okay, now that he's not here
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: and can't yell at us over it, let's, let's sell this. We'll,
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: we'll each get, you know, $ 4 billion.
- 1:37:48Speaker 6: And maybe it, maybe they won't have this intense family
- 1:37:51Speaker 6: feud between the children, like the bus, like the bus
- 1:37:54Speaker 6: children have had.
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: Maybe they will either way. It'll be probably entertaining for us.
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: By the way. I know it's a very like, it's
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: totally off topic, but it's not because we're talking about
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: sports ownership here, but whenever you hear about, you know,
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: mom or dad or grandpa or grandma, is the sort
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: of progenitor of the success, and then the handover happens,
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: it is so prohibitively rare that the next generation handles
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: the situation even close to properly. Where it's just like
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: smooth sailing. It's like.
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: You would think that every pro athletes child would be
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: really good and potentially a pro athlete. And then you
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: look at it and you're like, Oh no, it's actually
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: kind of rare.
- 1:38:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: Like when it does happen, it's awesome. And we've hyper-focus
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: on it, but it actually is kind of rare that,
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: It's not just like this direct lineage thing. There are,
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: I will say this.
- 1:38:52Speaker 6: There are a lot more guys who are not, not
- 1:38:56Speaker 6: necessarily all of them are stars in pro sports right now,
- 1:38:59Speaker 6: but are at least making it in pro sports. If
- 1:39:02Speaker 6: not being stars that were children of athletes, that seems
- 1:39:08Speaker 6: to be more of a thing now, but you're, you're
- 1:39:11Speaker 6: still absolutely right. It's not like, like Michael Jordan's kids
- 1:39:15Speaker 6: were not great at, we're not great athletes and make
- 1:39:17Speaker 6: it pros LeBron James. I mean, Bronnie's in the NBA
- 1:39:20Speaker 6: barely like you, the guys that you just go, Oh yeah,
- 1:39:24Speaker 6: they're going to be awesome. They're going to have awesome
- 1:39:25Speaker 6: children at sports. Like it doesn't typically work out that way.
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: And the ownership thing is even worse because there's not
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: like a genetic component to that. No, some pro athletes,
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: it's just like they pass down the size and the
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: strength to be pro athletes. I don't think there is,
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: and maybe I'm wrong here. I don't think there is
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: like a billionaire gene where it's like, you are a great,
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: maybe there is an entrepreneurial gene or something like that.
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: But I think that a cushy life like weeds it
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: out of you potentially. So then every time you get
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: to the second or third generation people, like even the
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: San Francisco 49ers, right? That's a family organization. They've, they've
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: kept it in the family and they've passed it down.
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: Jed York is getting arrested for hanging out in trailer parks.
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: Now he's in, he's done a decent job with the
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: team itself, but had success under him.
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: It's like, what's going on here?
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:40:20Speaker 6: I mean, James stolen his dad bought the Knicks and
- 1:40:25Speaker 6: Madison square garden and all that. Jimmy said, he said,
- 1:40:29Speaker 6: what do you want? He said, I want, I want
- 1:40:31Speaker 6: Madison square garden. And yeah, the Knicks just won the championship.
- 1:40:34Speaker 6: But like, do you think that James Dolan is good
- 1:40:36Speaker 6: at being an owner?
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: Like, come on. All right, we will take another break here.
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: Zach Moss, sideline reporter, Utah football legend. He's going to
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: join us to talk about a massive win against Houston
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: and how you avoid the trap that is the Cincinnati
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: Bearcats and a road game next week. Zach Moss next.
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: That's me in the corner.
- 1:41:05Speaker 5: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 1:41:08Speaker 5: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:41:14Speaker 10: Hour number three on a Monday.
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: And we start with Zach Moss, the Utah football legend,
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: NFL veteran, handling the sideline duties on Utah football radio
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: broadcast now. Zach Moss, welcome back to the show. How
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: are you, sir?
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: Good, good. Doing good. How are you?
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: Doing great. Wild night at Rice Echo Stadium on Saturday. Obviously,
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: you were there on the sidelines. And let's talk about
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: the atmosphere first. Blackout game, night game, Morgan Scali's first blackout,
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: and an undefeated team welcoming a top 15 Houston squad.
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: The must showed out. The rest of the stadium was full.
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: It was loud, was crazy. You were a player for
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: some big moments and some big noise at Rice Echo Stadium.
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: How did Saturday night compare to the best of those?
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: Yeah, it was definitely up there.
- 1:42:10Speaker 7: That was an absolute spectacular environment. The game warranted it
- 1:42:18Speaker 7: for sure. So it was awesome to be inside there
- 1:42:22Speaker 7: on ground level, getting to.
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: Experience it all.
- 1:42:24Speaker 7: Those are the type of games that you know, as players,
- 1:42:28Speaker 7: you never forget and things of that nature. So happy
- 1:42:30Speaker 7: that the fans were able to make that an impactful
- 1:42:33Speaker 7: game in a lot of different ways for us. So
- 1:42:36Speaker 7: going to need that in about two weeks as well.
- 1:42:39Speaker 3: We will.
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: That'll be a 10 a.m. kickoff. We were just talking
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: about that. The Holy War announced as a 10 a.m.
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: local time kickoff. What do you think of that?
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: Early.
- 1:42:52Speaker 3: Real early kick. You know, but A lot of people were,
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: you know, kind of 50-50 on it because of already having.
- 1:43:02Speaker 7: The super late games and we get the super early
- 1:43:04Speaker 7: one right after about four straight late ones. But, you know,
- 1:43:09Speaker 7: at the end of the day, you know, there's a
- 1:43:10Speaker 7: lot of really good games going on that same week,
- 1:43:14Speaker 7: that same weekend.
- 1:43:15Speaker 3: And we're in a really good spot with that at
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: the end of the day.
- 1:43:18Speaker 7: I know it's super early, but we pretty much get
- 1:43:21Speaker 7: to start the day off, get the Saturday off early.
- 1:43:24Speaker 7: and put us in a really prime situation so everybody
- 1:43:27Speaker 7: on both sides of the coast can see what Utah
- 1:43:30Speaker 7: football is about, continue to see what this rivalry has
- 1:43:36Speaker 7: been over the years and things of that nature as well.
- 1:43:38Speaker 7: So early, so get your coffee and things of that nature,
- 1:43:42Speaker 7: but it's a really good spot at the end of
- 1:43:45Speaker 7: the day. to showcase what we are able to do
- 1:43:49Speaker 7: on this field right now, what we've been doing over
- 1:43:51Speaker 7: the last couple weeks here.
- 1:43:53Speaker 3: So I'm happy about it.
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: So let's get back to this Houston game. First one
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: of the season where Utah doesn't take possession and march
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: down and score a touchdown on the first offensive drive.
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: Houston has all season long been really good defensively, especially
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: against the run. And they were able to stymie Utah's
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: efforts in that first drive, that first scoring drive. So,
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: you know, it's a different feeling for that offense than
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: they've had in any game. It's a different feeling on
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: the sideline than anyone's had in any game. What were
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: your thoughts when this game started out in a way,
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: you know, not the hot start we were used to
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: from Utah?
- 1:44:34Speaker 7: You know, it makes sense why it wasn't the super
- 1:44:39Speaker 7: hot start that we were expecting, you know. is Houston
- 1:44:44Speaker 7: teams really good, especially.
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: In the ring game.
- 1:44:46Speaker 3: They were really, really good. And that's the aspect of it.
- 1:44:50Speaker 7: But they hadn't played a team yet like ours that
- 1:44:53Speaker 7: has so many different weapons when it comes to the
- 1:44:57Speaker 7: ground game. So, you know, Dan Pierre, how good the
- 1:44:59Speaker 7: company he had, you know, that was what was going
- 1:45:03Speaker 7: to break the game and pushes over the top and
- 1:45:06Speaker 7: exactly what he was able to give us.
- 1:45:07Speaker 3: Cause that's what we were going to need. Houston was
- 1:45:10Speaker 3: really good.
- 1:45:11Speaker 7: Getting into different fronts and things of that nature. And
- 1:45:15Speaker 7: Devin was able to, you know, hurt them in the
- 1:45:19Speaker 7: run game when it came down to being able to
- 1:45:22Speaker 7: call pass plays and making 10, 15, 12-yard runs and
- 1:45:25Speaker 7: things like that. So that was awesome to see that.
- 1:45:28Speaker 7: But nothing that was, you know, obviously when you get
- 1:45:31Speaker 7: shut out, naturally everybody kind of has a lot of
- 1:45:35Speaker 7: question marks around that in that first half. But the
- 1:45:38Speaker 7: boys responded. They showed the type of offense that we've
- 1:45:40Speaker 7: been able to see. Now it ends up being a
- 1:45:43Speaker 7: little later in the game. but they know they can't
- 1:45:46Speaker 7: have those type of issues each and every week, especially
- 1:45:50Speaker 7: these next few weeks. So I'm sure they'll get all
- 1:45:54Speaker 7: that kind of corrected and watch the film and get
- 1:45:56Speaker 7: better from that. That was a very physical game for
- 1:46:01Speaker 7: those guys as well. So I'm not super worried about it,
- 1:46:05Speaker 7: but they did show a lot of different things when
- 1:46:08Speaker 7: it came to adversity that they hadn't even been in
- 1:46:11Speaker 7: all year in that.
- 1:46:13Speaker 3: One single game.
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: We've talked about this with Wayshawn Parker before, but this
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: was another game where he had to affect the game
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: a little bit more without the ball in his hand.
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: It was quiet for him from a production standpoint. Houston,
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: I think, came in with a game plan. Don't let
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: him beat you. Make Devin Dampier beat us. And thankfully,
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: Devin's capable of doing that, and we'll get to him
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: here in a second, but you played the running back position,
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: and when a team keys on you as effectively as
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: Houston seemed to key on Weishan, how do you make
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: yourself effective still and help your team?
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: You know, some games, you're just not going to have.
- 1:46:52Speaker 7: The gaudy numbers that you would want each and every
- 1:46:56Speaker 7: week as a competitor. I think, you know, he still
- 1:46:59Speaker 7: impacted the game a lot when it came to him
- 1:47:03Speaker 7: being on the field, where he was aligned, you know,
- 1:47:05Speaker 7: people accounts for him, eyes on him, things like that,
- 1:47:08Speaker 7: which allow certain things to open up in the past,
- 1:47:12Speaker 7: the game when we did throw it and you know,
- 1:47:15Speaker 7: certain things for, for Devin to, you know, exploit as well. So,
- 1:47:19Speaker 7: you know, even when you're not, you know, having the
- 1:47:22Speaker 7: ball in your hand is what you're able to do
- 1:47:24Speaker 7: when you don't have the ball in your hand, right?
- 1:47:26Speaker 3: You know, the type of effort.
- 1:47:27Speaker 7: He's still giving, the type of, he has some bullets,
- 1:47:30Speaker 7: pickups in that game as well. He caught a guy
- 1:47:33Speaker 7: on the other side of the line of scrimmage and
- 1:47:35Speaker 7: literally ran through the A-gap, knew the guy was blitzing
- 1:47:37Speaker 7: and got all the way to him on the other
- 1:47:39Speaker 7: side of the line of scrimmage. So, you know, he
- 1:47:42Speaker 7: was still being him, you know.
- 1:47:45Speaker 3: Without having to be able to touch the ball every
- 1:47:47Speaker 3: single play. So that's the type of stuff that shows
- 1:47:49Speaker 3: up on film. that, you know, scouts and.
- 1:47:51Speaker 7: Things at the next level pay attention to as well.
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: It also bodes well, because the last time we talked
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: about this, about way Sean not getting as many touches,
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: then the next week he went off, I think for
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: three touchdowns. So now I'm expecting that again, Cincinnati, because
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: way Sean's not going to be relatively quiet two weeks
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: in a Rose act.
- 1:48:10Speaker 8: No, he shouldn't be.
- 1:48:12Speaker 7: We don't, obviously we shouldn't also expect that. I know
- 1:48:14Speaker 7: he doesn't think that's going to happen again. You know,
- 1:48:20Speaker 7: But this Cincinnati team is going to present some challenges.
- 1:48:23Speaker 7: They're riding high with some momentum and things like that
- 1:48:26Speaker 7: on the road. So this team can't sleep. They can't
- 1:48:31Speaker 7: start slow and things like that. I'm sure he's going
- 1:48:33Speaker 7: to have a big part in the game in getting
- 1:48:35Speaker 7: him going early and trying to establish that run game
- 1:48:38Speaker 7: early versus the Cincinnati team.
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: Devin damp here, uh, 18 to 26, 204 yards. He
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: did not throw any touchdown passes. He scored two on
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: the ground 15 for one 50. Uh, and he, he
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: ran in for a couple of touchdowns. He did throw
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: the two interceptions. I want to stay focused on the
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: positive here for one second though. Uh, it seemed like
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: he was playing a little bit more free when the
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: pocket would start to break down or he couldn't find
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: the open man. I think in recent games, maybe all
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: this year, he's been a lot more careful about immediately
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: taking off and running. In your mind, what was different
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: about his willingness or ability to run when those seams
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: opened up against Houston versus the first six games of
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: the year?
- 1:49:25Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, I mentioned it in our podcast, and
- 1:49:28Speaker 7: our pregame show with Bill Sly. Um, you know, he
- 1:49:32Speaker 7: hadn't really been asked really. I mentioned it last week
- 1:49:34Speaker 7: versus the Colorado game is which way I thought he
- 1:49:36Speaker 7: would have another big night on the ground, um, as well. Um, But,
- 1:49:42Speaker 7: you know, he hadn't been asked really to, we hadn't
- 1:49:44Speaker 7: really drawn up a lot of QB runs as much
- 1:49:47Speaker 7: as we did last year, how effective he was, especially
- 1:49:50Speaker 7: early in the year until he had that ankle injury
- 1:49:52Speaker 7: last year. You know, in the passing game, he really
- 1:49:56Speaker 7: hadn't been looking to scramble as well. You know, and
- 1:49:59Speaker 7: credit to him because he put a lot of work
- 1:50:01Speaker 7: into the offseason of becoming more of a better pocket
- 1:50:04Speaker 7: passer and staying in there and trusting those guys up front.
- 1:50:08Speaker 7: which those guys up front have done an absolute great
- 1:50:11Speaker 7: job of making sure he's been able to be clean
- 1:50:13Speaker 7: for the most part of the year.
- 1:50:15Speaker 3: But, you know, I was able to talk.
- 1:50:16Speaker 7: To him Saturday night after the game and, you know,
- 1:50:19Speaker 7: I asked him essentially the same thing, what kind of
- 1:50:23Speaker 7: started clicking in the run game for him and why
- 1:50:25Speaker 7: he was able to put the numbers he was able to. And,
- 1:50:27Speaker 7: you know, pretty much he just said that that was
- 1:50:30Speaker 7: something that they realized that going into this week, you know,
- 1:50:33Speaker 7: Houston was going to, give him some rushing lanes. Um,
- 1:50:37Speaker 7: and you know, you could tell it was something that
- 1:50:40Speaker 7: the coaches and things like that talked, they talked about
- 1:50:42Speaker 7: going into the week because, you know, it wasn't any, Oh,
- 1:50:45Speaker 7: should I run kind of hesitant, jumping around in the pocket?
- 1:50:48Speaker 7: You know, he, when he saw something that he liked,
- 1:50:50Speaker 7: he took it right.
- 1:50:51Speaker 3: It was right away.
- 1:50:52Speaker 7: It doesn't matter if it was two, three straight plays
- 1:50:53Speaker 7: in a row. Um, no matter what was called, he
- 1:50:56Speaker 7: was going to take, call his own number on some
- 1:50:57Speaker 7: of those runs and it paid dividends. Um, getting a
- 1:51:01Speaker 7: lot of momentum going into that second half to close
- 1:51:03Speaker 7: out that first half. So yeah, he was pretty much just,
- 1:51:05Speaker 7: you know, they talked about some things and, you know,
- 1:51:08Speaker 7: Houston kept giving it to him and he just took
- 1:51:11Speaker 7: advantage of it.
- 1:51:11Speaker 3: And, you know, that was huge.
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: Zach Moss is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell show,
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: talking Utah's big win over Houston, 21, 13, top 15
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: matchup at Rice Echo stadium this last Saturday night. Daniel Bray,
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: Morgan Scali just shouted him out in the press conference
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: not so long ago. Daniel Bray only got three carries
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: in this game, but he made them count. The timing
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: of those carries, his production on those carries. I mean,
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: it's clear that this young man has like a really extreme,
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: a crazy high upside for this Utah football team. But
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: as we've talked about all year, there's only so many
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: touches to go around. How do they get Daniel Bray
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: more involved?
- 1:51:53Speaker 3: Speaker 4 0 1. Yeah, I mean, he's a dynamic weapon.
- 1:51:55Speaker 7: I mean, Sly is always calling for him to touch
- 1:51:58Speaker 7: the ball in any way, shape or form, because, you know,
- 1:52:01Speaker 7: he's one of those players that, you know, he doesn't
- 1:52:04Speaker 7: need the ball a ton of times to end the
- 1:52:07Speaker 7: game with, you know, he can have a game where
- 1:52:08Speaker 7: it's five carries 80, 85 total yards, touchdown, two touchdowns,
- 1:52:13Speaker 7: you know, you get up in space, you had a run.
- 1:52:17Speaker 7: Saturday night that he was real close to breaking. He
- 1:52:19Speaker 7: got to the second level. He just got tripped up
- 1:52:21Speaker 7: a little bit. And the guys were able to corral
- 1:52:24Speaker 7: and get to him. But he's explosive. He's one of
- 1:52:28Speaker 7: those players that you really got to figure out a
- 1:52:31Speaker 7: way to give him the ball, and that comes down
- 1:52:33Speaker 7: to the coaching, right, and putting him in the right
- 1:52:36Speaker 7: spots and the right timing and calling his number because,
- 1:52:39Speaker 7: you know, when he walks on the field, you know,
- 1:52:42Speaker 7: defenses are key to him, right, because he's not.
- 1:52:46Speaker 3: On the field, you know, 50, 60 plays, 50.
- 1:52:48Speaker 7: Snaps or whatever it may be. He's not that guy
- 1:52:50Speaker 7: doing that. As of right now, he's being asked to
- 1:52:53Speaker 7: come in, you know, maybe 10 to 20 plays. And
- 1:52:56Speaker 7: when he's on the field, you know, he's a high
- 1:52:57Speaker 7: alert guy to get the ball and what type of
- 1:53:00Speaker 7: plays that they like.
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: To run with him. Right.
- 1:53:02Speaker 7: So there's a lot of film on him and it's
- 1:53:04Speaker 7: really hard to get him into space sometimes. But, you know,
- 1:53:07Speaker 7: that's on the coaches to keep trying to figure.
- 1:53:10Speaker 3: Out different ways to get him on lock so that they.
- 1:53:12Speaker 7: Can continue to create explosives. And, you know, this team
- 1:53:16Speaker 7: doesn't have to go in 10, 15 play drives.
- 1:53:19Speaker 3: A lot of different times.
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: I want to talk about the blitz that Jackson Benny
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: hit Connor Wegman and ended up coughing up the ball.
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: John Moyes able to, to get the fumble and Utah
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: then takes it in on the very next play. The running,
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: the Houston running back. I don't remember who was in,
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: I think it, I think it might've been Rashawn Sanford
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: that was in Uh, having to block on that, but
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: he can't be right in that situation. I watched that blitz.
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: I talked to one of my, my buddies who was
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: an NFL lineman for a long time. He, that running back,
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: that blitz is designed. So he can't be right. Cause
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: he's either got to try to block the first body,
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: which I think you're supposed to do. You could tell me.
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: And that's Cyrus Polu. And that allows Benny to come
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: through or he sees Benny come and he goes and
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: blocks Benny. And now the linebacker is on your quarterback.
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: You played the position. I'm sure you've been put in
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: that situation a time or two. Tell me what it's like.
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: Tell me what that running back is seeing as that
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: blitz is coming.
- 1:54:16Speaker 7: Yeah, that's a hard blitz for back because, you know,
- 1:54:22Speaker 7: and the center, right, because he's the one usually, you know,
- 1:54:26Speaker 7: turning the protection to certain places and things like that. And,
- 1:54:30Speaker 7: you know, that's why Coach Scali calls it the unblockable.
- 1:54:34Speaker 3: Blitz, right? It's hard. It's not, you know, I've.
- 1:54:39Speaker 7: Been able to do a lot of blitz pickups in
- 1:54:41Speaker 7: my time, and it's very rare that uh got beat
- 1:54:45Speaker 7: on um the schematic part of it but yeah.
- 1:54:49Speaker 3: It's a really hard one i mean we even literally.
- 1:54:51Speaker 7: Looked that way first um and then kind of just
- 1:54:53Speaker 7: started going into his progression um just absolute perfect timing
- 1:54:59Speaker 7: on benny's part because that's that's really the part that
- 1:55:02Speaker 7: is um that you got to hit perfectly right because
- 1:55:05Speaker 7: if he's already in the gap if you stand up
- 1:55:08Speaker 7: in the gap before the play is snapped, right? Like
- 1:55:10Speaker 7: that's an easy pick, uh, let's pick up if he's
- 1:55:13Speaker 7: too far off from that nickel spot and he's not
- 1:55:16Speaker 7: already kind of lean and, and, and, and things of
- 1:55:18Speaker 7: that nature, right? The timing part, uh, he won't get there.
- 1:55:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:55:22Speaker 7: Thankfully the guys back in, uh, We were able.
- 1:55:25Speaker 3: To hold up for a few little.
- 1:55:27Speaker 7: Ticks more to get him, you know, home on that blitz.
- 1:55:31Speaker 7: So everything was literally perfect on that blitz call. Just
- 1:55:34Speaker 7: the execution from Jackson going inside the C-gap, the defensive end,
- 1:55:38Speaker 7: taking the tackle.
- 1:55:39Speaker 3: Out and then buying the guard's eyes.
- 1:55:41Speaker 7: You know, that's literally how you draw it up and
- 1:55:43Speaker 7: it's literally how it played out on that field. And
- 1:55:46Speaker 7: I mean, absolutely the best play and the biggest play
- 1:55:50Speaker 7: so far of the season.
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: The ensuing offensive possession, Dev scores on the very first play.
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: And there's still more than two minutes left, so you've
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: got the two-minute timeout coming. Houston, I think at that point,
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: had one timeout left maybe. And there's a school of
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: thought that you try to milk a little bit more
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: clock off there. Utah scored immediately. You could also go
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: for two, go up nine, make the game truly out
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: of reach. They kick the extra point. They go up
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: by eight. We'll start with the clock management. Were you
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: surprised to see them score quickly there? Did you think
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: that maybe you might see a couple of runs, even
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: if you have to kneel it down on the goal
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: line to get an extra snap out of it?
- 1:56:34Speaker 7: No, I think you want to take points where you
- 1:56:36Speaker 7: can get them. credit to our defense. They, they had
- 1:56:40Speaker 7: played absolutely outstanding on defense side of the ball, especially
- 1:56:47Speaker 7: in the red zones. Many times Houston got into the
- 1:56:49Speaker 7: red zone and they came out of there with, you know,
- 1:56:53Speaker 7: essentially nothing, right. They got one phantom PI call that
- 1:56:59Speaker 7: got them points on the board late in the game
- 1:57:01Speaker 7: as well.
- 1:57:02Speaker 3: So, you know, You got to go with the points.
- 1:57:06Speaker 3: You got to take the points so you can get them.
- 1:57:08Speaker 3: Trust in your defense.
- 1:57:09Speaker 7: Your defense had absolutely been balling out all night long.
- 1:57:13Speaker 7: So what was going to change in the last few
- 1:57:15Speaker 7: minutes of that game? Probably nothing. They had banged up
- 1:57:18Speaker 7: Wegman pretty good as well. So they were feeling really good.
- 1:57:22Speaker 7: So it was perfect to see them do.
- 1:57:24Speaker 3: That the way they did it because.
- 1:57:26Speaker 7: Sometimes when you want to take a few more time
- 1:57:28Speaker 7: off the clock, want to do little certain things, right?
- 1:57:32Speaker 7: That's not always going in your favor, right? I think
- 1:57:34Speaker 7: if you look at the UCF and BYU game, you know,
- 1:57:40Speaker 7: that was... a game where, you know, you kick the
- 1:57:45Speaker 7: field goal with 11, 12 seconds, whatever it was on
- 1:57:47Speaker 7: the clock when they had to fall on the first down, right?
- 1:57:50Speaker 7: And that's, in my opinion, as a player, that's what
- 1:57:53Speaker 7: I would have done because then you get in a
- 1:57:54Speaker 7: scenario where, you know, you snap the ball, you spike it,
- 1:57:58Speaker 7: then you have another play where you throw it up down,
- 1:58:00Speaker 7: so you're pretty much icing your own kicker, having to
- 1:58:04Speaker 7: waste two or three plays, and then, you know, you
- 1:58:06Speaker 7: go out there and get the kid blocked. So, you know,
- 1:58:09Speaker 7: when you've got the opportunity and you got to strike
- 1:58:13Speaker 7: when it's, when it's the right time and, and, you know,
- 1:58:14Speaker 7: that's what they were able to do and pay dividends.
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: Speaker 0 7, So how do you, how do you
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: avoid the pitfalls that Cincinnati potentially presents here? First of all, they're,
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: they're good football team. Good enough to beat top 10,
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: Texas tech just this last weekend. It's sandwiched between your
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: first emotional win of the year and what is certainly
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: going to be a very emotional game against BYU. And
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: you got Arizona right after that. So Cincinnati doesn't have
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: the ranking next to their name. They're not a traditional opponent.
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: You don't have history built up. I mean, it's very
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: easily the type of game that human nature can take over,
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: like we saw with BYU after beating Notre Dame. They
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: go on the road. They lose to a team like
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: UCF that they're better than. Utah's better than Cincinnati, should
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: beat Cincinnati, but you still have to be your best
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: in order to do so. How does Utah make sure
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: that Cincinnati doesn't bite them, doesn't surprise them?
- 1:59:12Speaker 3: I think.
- 1:59:14Speaker 3: It was an emotional win for sure.
- 1:59:16Speaker 7: But I think that it was, you know, being able
- 1:59:20Speaker 7: to be down there after the game and talk to
- 1:59:22Speaker 7: some of the guys and just the energy and the vibes.
- 1:59:25Speaker 3: I picked up on.
- 1:59:26Speaker 7: You know, it was emotional, but it's not something that
- 1:59:30Speaker 7: they were surprised that they won that game.
- 1:59:32Speaker 14: Right.
- 1:59:32Speaker 3: It wasn't like, oh.
- 1:59:33Speaker 7: Kind of shocked to get a win and things of
- 1:59:36Speaker 7: that nature, right? They were more so just almost focused
- 1:59:40Speaker 7: and hungry just to get back to work this week
- 1:59:44Speaker 7: to start fixing those things that, you know, allowed them
- 1:59:46Speaker 7: to come out into, especially in the offensive side of
- 1:59:49Speaker 7: the ball and start slow and things like that. That
- 1:59:51Speaker 7: really wasn't, you know, obviously what they had been accustomed
- 1:59:54Speaker 7: to and stuff like that. So, you know, they understand
- 1:59:58Speaker 7: what Cincinnati is, You know, it's doing right now what
- 2:00:03Speaker 7: they were able to do last week, obviously going on
- 2:00:06Speaker 7: the road after a physical game, like they got their
- 2:00:08Speaker 7: big time game, late game, college game. They all the
- 2:00:11Speaker 7: extra hoopla and stuff like that. You know, I think
- 2:00:14Speaker 7: these guys will be ready. You know, stuff like that
- 2:00:17Speaker 7: comes down to coaching. You know, the players will be
- 2:00:21Speaker 7: players and do player things, but the coaching staff has
- 2:00:24Speaker 7: to make sure these guys are absolutely locked in because
- 2:00:27Speaker 7: this is what you call a trap game, right?
- 2:00:29Speaker 3: Look at BYU, right?
- 2:00:33Speaker 7: A big, super big win versus Notre Dame. But, you know,
- 2:00:36Speaker 7: you could tell there was a lot of emotion on the.
- 2:00:39Speaker 3: Field from the players and stuff like that.
- 2:00:41Speaker 7: And, you know, that carries into the week, right? That's
- 2:00:45Speaker 7: why coaches are so strict on having 24, 48 hours
- 2:00:48Speaker 7: to enjoy this.
- 2:00:49Speaker 3: Win and then wipe it away, right?
- 2:00:51Speaker 7: If you lose, you got X amount of time to
- 2:00:55Speaker 7: just wipe it away because... That win or loss from
- 2:00:58Speaker 7: the previous game doesn't help you going into the next
- 2:01:01Speaker 7: week at all. It doesn't really matter because whatever interception
- 2:01:06Speaker 7: or tackle or missed tackle or missed block or touchdown
- 2:01:11Speaker 7: that may have occurred on either side of the ball
- 2:01:14Speaker 7: for us, positive or negative, isn't going to help you
- 2:01:18Speaker 7: going into that next week. So, you know, these guys
- 2:01:20Speaker 7: are ready for that. They understand what's out in front
- 2:01:23Speaker 7: of them and where they want to go, what they
- 2:01:24Speaker 7: want to do, and that they have everything in front
- 2:01:27Speaker 7: of them right now. So I don't expect this to
- 2:01:30Speaker 7: be a trap game, but I expect Cincinnati to definitely
- 2:01:34Speaker 7: not lay down because they have every right to try
- 2:01:37Speaker 7: to go ahead and knock off two of the better
- 2:01:41Speaker 7: teams in the big 12 back-to-back weeks.
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: There's a lot of conversation going about the general vibes.
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: And we've certainly talked about it plenty on the show,
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: but the vibes are always good when you're winning. People
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: want to say, this is a Morgan Scali thing. This
- 2:01:58Speaker 1: team wouldn't be this way. They wouldn't have this much fun.
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: If it was anybody else, certainly not. If it was
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: Kyle Whittingham, I think we still need to be fair
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: to Kyle Whittingham, even if you don't like what he
- 2:02:08Speaker 1: did and how he left, whatever, but you're right there.
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: And you were in this locker room as a player.
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: You've been around this program. How pronounced is the difference
- 2:02:18Speaker 1: in vibes, for lack of a better term, under Morgan Scali,
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: especially when your quarterback throws an interception or you're trailing
- 2:02:27Speaker 1: like you were against Houston?
- 2:02:33Speaker 3: You know.
- 2:02:35Speaker 7: Coach Scali has done an amazing job with the culture.
- 2:02:38Speaker 7: You hear that word a lot. Devin Dampier, Saturday night,
- 2:02:43Speaker 7: used that word a ton, right? Guys buying in since
- 2:02:49Speaker 7: the beginning of the season, since the offseason, and, you know,
- 2:02:54Speaker 7: the guys that he's been able to, that's been on
- 2:02:56Speaker 7: leadership council and stuff like that.
- 2:02:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:02:59Speaker 7: When they walked out of halftime of that game, right.
- 2:03:03Speaker 7: Trailing after you just missed the field goal, right. As well,
- 2:03:06Speaker 7: trailing and you, then you go come out and you
- 2:03:08Speaker 7: go down 10, zero. Um, and, and Cincinnati's had the
- 2:03:12Speaker 7: ball forever. Um, in the third quarter, you could tell,
- 2:03:16Speaker 7: I could tell, you know, just sitting there, I'm eating
- 2:03:19Speaker 7: a cookie as the guys are walking out of that time. Um,
- 2:03:23Speaker 7: and they're, Their confidence level is high, right? You would
- 2:03:27Speaker 7: have thought this was the beginning of the game.
- 2:03:29Speaker 3: You know, how much.
- 2:03:30Speaker 7: Talking and how much hyping each other up there still was, right?
- 2:03:34Speaker 3: Even after a very low moment in the game, right?
- 2:03:37Speaker 3: I mean, you missed a kick.
- 2:03:39Speaker 7: You don't really have much offensive success in the first half,
- 2:03:42Speaker 7: all that type of stuff.
- 2:03:43Speaker 1: You can come out flat, right?
- 2:03:44Speaker 3: You can come out a little bit like, ah, this
- 2:03:48Speaker 3: game can be.
- 2:03:49Speaker 2: Over, right?
- 2:03:49Speaker 3: That's all it takes. It only takes one guy.
- 2:03:52Speaker 7: To think like that, to feel like that, right? And
- 2:03:55Speaker 7: then they react like that on the field, and then
- 2:03:57Speaker 7: it becomes reality.
- 2:03:59Speaker 3: So, you know, these guys truly.
- 2:04:02Speaker 7: Truly, truly, truly believe in everything Coach Scali has been preaching,
- 2:04:05Speaker 7: everything he's been doing. The culture is so strong within
- 2:04:09Speaker 7: these group of guys. They truly do, you know, love
- 2:04:12Speaker 7: each other and care about each other, and they play for.
- 2:04:14Speaker 3: Each other, which is amazing. you know, really hard to
- 2:04:18Speaker 3: do in any level of football.
- 2:04:21Speaker 7: And I can only imagine probably how hard it has
- 2:04:24Speaker 7: been as well. And a challenge, I should say, when you,
- 2:04:27Speaker 7: you throw in, you know, different guys making different types
- 2:04:31Speaker 7: of income when it comes to NIL and stuff like that,
- 2:04:33Speaker 7: because sometimes you get guys that just think about themselves
- 2:04:36Speaker 7: and all right, well, we're down 10 zero. Let me
- 2:04:38Speaker 7: figure out how I can just keep making my tackles.
- 2:04:40Speaker 7: Or maybe I don't need to communicate as much. I
- 2:04:42Speaker 7: may need to all the little things that you can,
- 2:04:45Speaker 7: pop up because we're all human. The coaching staff, the
- 2:04:49Speaker 7: weight room staff, the trainers, literally every single person inside
- 2:04:54Speaker 7: of that building deserves a lot of credit because it
- 2:04:57Speaker 7: takes an entire family group effort to live the culture
- 2:05:01Speaker 7: that allows you to come back versus a very, very
- 2:05:05Speaker 7: good Houston team at home.
- 2:05:10Speaker 1: Do they win in Cincinnati, Zach?
- 2:05:14Speaker 3: I believe so. I don't see why they don't.
- 2:05:18Speaker 7: I think, you know, I think they get back to
- 2:05:20Speaker 7: a little bit of who they are offensively.
- 2:05:23Speaker 3: I think the defense takes another step forward.
- 2:05:26Speaker 7: You know, as well, because, you know, that's what good
- 2:05:31Speaker 7: teams do. That's what championship caliber teams do. They keep
- 2:05:35Speaker 7: finding a way to win and keep finding ways to
- 2:05:37Speaker 7: get better. They don't get complacent in the things that
- 2:05:41Speaker 7: they've done in the past, right?
- 2:05:42Speaker 3: They don't rely on those things.
- 2:05:44Speaker 7: They keep trying to figure out, okay, how can we
- 2:05:46Speaker 7: get better? How can we get better? And they have
- 2:05:47Speaker 7: a coaching staff that is also thinking and believing the
- 2:05:52Speaker 7: same things as well.
- 2:05:53Speaker 3: So I think, you know, a big challenge.
- 2:05:56Speaker 7: There's going to be a big challenge, the biggest challenge
- 2:05:59Speaker 7: on the road so far with a Cincinnati team playing
- 2:06:03Speaker 7: with a lot of confidence, knocking off a tech team
- 2:06:07Speaker 7: in a dominant fashion, I should say. Not a knockoff,
- 2:06:09Speaker 7: walk-off field goal or anything, in a very dominant fashion.
- 2:06:11Speaker 7: So Cincinnati is definitely not a team to be slept on,
- 2:06:15Speaker 7: and it's going to be a very, very good game
- 2:06:18Speaker 7: out there in Cincinnati.
- 2:06:21Speaker 1: That is Zach Moss, the Utah football legend, NFL veteran,
- 2:06:24Speaker 1: and voice on the sidelines for the Utah Football Radio broadcast.
- 2:06:28Speaker 1: Enjoy the trip. Have some Skyline Chili for us or whatever.
- 2:06:32Speaker 1: I guess you know that place well, though, so it's
- 2:06:36Speaker 1: not exotic for you to go and have Cincinnati food.
- 2:06:40Speaker 7: No, I would not be trying any Skyline Chili again.
- 2:06:43Speaker 3: That time of my life has passed.
- 2:06:46Speaker 1: All right, Zach, appreciate you. Thanks, man.
- 2:06:50Speaker 3: All right, my man. Take care.
- 2:06:51Speaker 1: Zach Moss here on the Sean O'Connell show. Some more
- 2:06:55Speaker 1: of your feedback. 877-353-0700. What you loved and hated about
- 2:07:00Speaker 1: Utah football versus Houston. I don't know how much there
- 2:07:03Speaker 1: really was to hate, but you know, this is what
- 2:07:05Speaker 1: we do as fans. You didn't pick. You wonder 877-353-0700
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: or at real OC sports. I also put up a
- 2:07:15Speaker 1: new poll question. I'll tell you what that is next.
- 2:07:17Speaker 1: It's the Sean O'Connell show. on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:07:20Speaker 1: It's a nice day for a white wedding.
- 2:07:26Speaker 5: You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:07:29Speaker 5: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:07:36Speaker 1: 877-353-0700. What'd you love about Saturday night? What'd you hate
- 2:07:40Speaker 1: about Saturday night? We've got a $ 25 gift card to
- 2:07:43Speaker 1: Zao Asian Cafe. We're going to give away with some
- 2:07:46Speaker 1: topical trivia coming up in about, we'll make it 14 minutes.
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: But first I want to hear from you. You could call,
- 2:07:53Speaker 1: you could text, you could tweet at Real OC Sports.
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: Cal says, love Jackson Betty sack. It came right when
- 2:07:59Speaker 1: we needed it. Didn't love that touchdown was taken away
- 2:08:02Speaker 1: from way. Sean Parker. What a catch that way. Sean, way.
- 2:08:06Speaker 1: Sean's most impressive play was ultimately wiped off with that
- 2:08:10Speaker 1: crazy catch. He made right on the sideline tiptoeing. He is,
- 2:08:15Speaker 1: he is Utah's best football player. It was a quiet
- 2:08:18Speaker 1: game for him. And obviously Devin is incredible. Devin Dampier
- 2:08:23Speaker 1: had his best game of the year. Even if he
- 2:08:25Speaker 1: threw those two interceptions and you always want to wipe
- 2:08:27Speaker 1: those out, you want to take away the habits that
- 2:08:29Speaker 1: are creating those interceptions, but he won you this game
- 2:08:33Speaker 1: and you have to give him credit for that. But
- 2:08:35Speaker 1: still way Sean week to week to week is he
- 2:08:38Speaker 1: is absolutely unreal. So that, that, that did suck that
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: he had that taken away from him.
- 2:08:44Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 2:08:44Speaker 1: Thanks Al Harrison.
- 2:08:45Speaker 6: No, that was sometimes you're just, what was he less
- 2:08:48Speaker 6: than a yard off, not off side, but off too
- 2:08:53Speaker 6: far downfield.
- 2:08:54Speaker 1: Like he was just barely too far downfield. It sucks.
- 2:08:57Speaker 1: Maybe we'll get a chance to talk to Al Harrison
- 2:08:59Speaker 1: about what happened there because like he is, he's the guy,
- 2:09:02Speaker 1: he's the one telling all the other offensive linemen what
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: to do. So could it just been a brain fart
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: also depending, right? Sometimes if you don't, if you thought
- 2:09:13Speaker 1: that maybe protection broke down or something, you would think,
- 2:09:17Speaker 1: oh my gosh, Devin is running now. So let me
- 2:09:19Speaker 1: get downfield and block for him.
- 2:09:21Speaker 6: I mean, we saw potentially the best offensive lineman in
- 2:09:24Speaker 6: Utah football history do this last year in a big
- 2:09:27Speaker 6: game in Spencer Fano.
- 2:09:28Speaker 1: Like I got to bring up old stuff. I'm just
- 2:09:30Speaker 1: saying like, it happens to the best of us. Also
- 2:09:32Speaker 1: wiped off a touchdown, which in a game you ultimately lost.
- 2:09:36Speaker 1: So that sucked. But at the end of the day,
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: both of those very interesting moments, I cannot, I cannot
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: give Colton Swan enough praise for the performance we saw
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: from him and his defense because I think there was,
- 2:09:52Speaker 1: and we'll get a chance to talk to him at
- 2:09:54Speaker 1: some point, I think there was a concerted decision made
- 2:09:59Speaker 1: to give Connor Wegman different looks in the first half
- 2:10:02Speaker 1: and the second half. I think they wanted to give
- 2:10:05Speaker 1: the four-man pass rush a chance. I think that they've
- 2:10:09Speaker 1: asked these guys, they've challenged these guys, you've got to
- 2:10:12Speaker 1: get home, you've got to do better, I need you
- 2:10:14Speaker 1: to pressure. To me, it looked very clear that they
- 2:10:18Speaker 1: also talked about how dangerous Wegman could be if you
- 2:10:20Speaker 1: opened up too large of lanes for him, like Houston
- 2:10:23Speaker 1: did for Devin with his legs. I think that Utah
- 2:10:26Speaker 1: was maybe just as focused on condensing and collapsing the
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: pocket inward as they were about trying to rush wide
- 2:10:33Speaker 1: and get around and spin move and all that kind
- 2:10:35Speaker 1: of stuff. We'll maybe get a chance to talk to
- 2:10:38Speaker 1: Colton and OK Brechterfield about that at some point. But
- 2:10:44Speaker 1: the fact that in the second half, especially when the
- 2:10:47Speaker 1: chips were down, especially when it was really time, they
- 2:10:50Speaker 1: just heated up Wegman. They started throwing things at him.
- 2:10:53Speaker 1: And that sack, the unblockable blitz, as Morgan Scali called it,
- 2:11:00Speaker 1: was just perfectly timed and perfectly executed. And we got
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: a ton of texts about that at the beginning of
- 2:11:05Speaker 1: the show. need be given to find a way for
- 2:11:10Speaker 1: way Sean to produce. Even when the box is stacked,
- 2:11:13Speaker 1: this coming from Michael. Well, here's the thing. You actually
- 2:11:17Speaker 1: don't need way Sean to produce when the box is stacked.
- 2:11:21Speaker 1: And what Kevin McGibbon is able to do is he's
- 2:11:23Speaker 1: able to find ways for the offense to produce when
- 2:11:26Speaker 1: the box is stacked, when the box is stacked, here's, here's, here's,
- 2:11:31Speaker 1: who's going to get more. If teams keep giving that
- 2:11:35Speaker 1: look to the, Utah's offense. They're like, don't let way
- 2:11:39Speaker 1: Sean Parker beat us. Make Devin Dampier do it with
- 2:11:42Speaker 1: his arm. Okay, fine. You know, who's going to have
- 2:11:46Speaker 1: a day when that happens? Noah Benny. You want to
- 2:11:49Speaker 1: know why? Because the box is stacked big tight end.
- 2:11:53Speaker 1: Like him. Looks like he's in there to run block
- 2:11:55Speaker 1: a little bit, little chip, sell the run, little play action. Oh, Oh,
- 2:12:01Speaker 1: linebackers crashed down thinking they're going to plug a hole
- 2:12:03Speaker 1: on the play action and And now Noah Benny is
- 2:12:06Speaker 1: eight yards past the line of scrimmage and he catches
- 2:12:09Speaker 1: something and he's shown a little wiggle. He's shown a
- 2:12:10Speaker 1: little shake. So as long as the offense is producing
- 2:12:15Speaker 1: against a stacked box, it doesn't have to be way
- 2:12:17Speaker 1: Sean Parker. If they're going to account for number one,
- 2:12:22Speaker 1: you hurt them. with number 12 and number 17 and
- 2:12:26Speaker 1: number seven and number 89 and number five. And then
- 2:12:30Speaker 1: they're like, crap, we can't just key in on number
- 2:12:34Speaker 1: one anymore. And that's when number one starts to kill
- 2:12:36Speaker 1: you again.
- 2:12:36Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:12:38Speaker 1: And I'll say this too.
- 2:12:39Speaker 6: I think it's absolutely encouraging that even he, even when
- 2:12:44Speaker 6: he has a subpar stat game, way Sean Parker, like
- 2:12:48Speaker 6: he did against Houston, which is all about Houston's defense, right?
- 2:12:52Speaker 1: They showed every.
- 2:12:53Speaker 6: Bit why they're a top, top part of the top half,
- 2:12:57Speaker 6: top part of the nation and rush defense, right? Um,
- 2:13:01Speaker 6: he scores way Sean still scores the go-ahead touchdown, arguably
- 2:13:05Speaker 6: the most important touchdown.
- 2:13:06Speaker 1: Of the game.
- 2:13:08Speaker 6: Even when he's being contained, he still makes maybe the
- 2:13:12Speaker 6: biggest play of the game. And if not for that, uh, well,
- 2:13:15Speaker 6: I guess it was the same, it was the same
- 2:13:17Speaker 6: touchdown drive, right? That he would have, he would have
- 2:13:20Speaker 6: caught that amazing touchdown catch. So he makes two touchdowns.
- 2:13:26Speaker 6: He gets two touchdowns on the same drive, basically. One
- 2:13:28Speaker 6: gets called back. That shows so much about his mettle,
- 2:13:34Speaker 6: just as you've talked about and others have talked about,
- 2:13:36Speaker 6: showing so much of what Devin Dampier is made of
- 2:13:39Speaker 6: when he has a subpar stat night throwing the ball,
- 2:13:43Speaker 6: and yet he still makes the biggest plays of the game.
- 2:13:47Speaker 1: Two interceptions, one really bad one at the end of
- 2:13:49Speaker 1: the game there.
- 2:13:50Speaker 6: He was able to overcome that and give you a
- 2:13:52Speaker 6: clutch touchdown at the end to put it a little
- 2:13:55Speaker 6: bit more out of reach. Your two best players on offense,
- 2:14:01Speaker 6: they have that thing that you need them to have
- 2:14:03Speaker 6: in the clutch. And that's an incredible thing, even when
- 2:14:08Speaker 6: seemingly nothing else has gone right for them the rest
- 2:14:10Speaker 6: of the game.
- 2:14:13Speaker 1: This is a shout-out, and I appreciate you bringing it
- 2:14:16Speaker 1: up because we've had so much to talk about today,
- 2:14:18Speaker 1: I never got to it. The bull rush sack by Jaimo,
- 2:14:21Speaker 1: it was one of the best plays you are ever
- 2:14:25Speaker 1: going to see a defensive lineman make in the world
- 2:14:28Speaker 1: of college football. That was a 5'10'' D-tackle running a 6'4,
- 2:14:35Speaker 1: 330-pound guard backward like he was playing against Little Leaguers.
- 2:14:39Speaker 1: That was a thing of beauty. And It's all about
- 2:14:44Speaker 1: pad level. It's all about timing. It's all about rush.
- 2:14:47Speaker 1: That poor Houston offensive guard is going to, he's literally
- 2:14:52Speaker 1: going to have nightmares about that play for the rest
- 2:14:54Speaker 1: of his life. He will. I know this because there's
- 2:14:59Speaker 1: one play, and I've said this on the air before,
- 2:15:01Speaker 1: there's one play from my high school career against Alta
- 2:15:04Speaker 1: that I still have nightmares about. That guy, Jaimo, is
- 2:15:08Speaker 1: going to be the subject of that man's nightmares until
- 2:15:13Speaker 1: he utters his last word and takes his last breath
- 2:15:17Speaker 1: in this world. They're going to be 50 years from now.
- 2:15:19Speaker 6: If those two guys cross paths, the guy that got
- 2:15:23Speaker 6: bull rushed, that lost that bull rush to Jaimo is.
- 2:15:26Speaker 1: Going to bring it up.
- 2:15:27Speaker 6: Like, dude, I still think about how nasty that sack
- 2:15:32Speaker 6: was that I gave up to you.
- 2:15:34Speaker 1: And look, he. I don't even know. I didn't, I mean,
- 2:15:38Speaker 1: looked at the pro football focus grades for either of
- 2:15:40Speaker 1: those players in the game. You may very well, it
- 2:15:44Speaker 1: might've been 50, 50 all game long. They could have
- 2:15:46Speaker 1: just been like two bull elk locked in rutting season
- 2:15:52Speaker 1: all game and just back and forth, back and forth,
- 2:15:54Speaker 1: back and forth. But the play that everyone is going
- 2:15:57Speaker 1: to remember, including both of those gentlemen is the one
- 2:16:00Speaker 1: that you can watch the highlights of. And it's just Jai,
- 2:16:04Speaker 1: running that man back. He didn't even touch the quarterback.
- 2:16:08Speaker 1: Jai himself didn't touch the quarterback. He just knocked his
- 2:16:11Speaker 1: own man into him. That is, that is, that is
- 2:16:15Speaker 1: so much more impressive. That's like, I can't get to you.
- 2:16:19Speaker 1: So instead I'm just going to throw your own guy
- 2:16:22Speaker 1: at you. That's that's rough for the office. You know,
- 2:16:25Speaker 1: who does that? You know, who developed a reputation as
- 2:16:29Speaker 1: literally the best in the world ever at the position
- 2:16:33Speaker 1: by doing that. Aaron Donald did that so often offensive
- 2:16:37Speaker 1: line guys will, you know, those like NFL films where
- 2:16:39Speaker 1: there's an offensive lineman sitting there in front of like
- 2:16:42Speaker 1: a muted backdrop. And he's just like, yeah, man, I
- 2:16:45Speaker 1: thought I anchored down. I thought I had him blocked.
- 2:16:48Speaker 1: And instead he hit me with the hump move and
- 2:16:50Speaker 1: I get knocked back into my own running back. And
- 2:16:52Speaker 1: it's a tackle for loss.
- 2:16:54Speaker 3: Jai. Yes.
- 2:16:58Speaker 1: We, we said it in the off season, he's undersized.
- 2:17:01Speaker 1: He's a beast. I mean, just call him Aaron Donald,
- 2:17:03Speaker 1: the Aaron Donald of college football. That's what we said. Oh,
- 2:17:06Speaker 1: that's what he is.
- 2:17:07Speaker 6: We said that he had that same, I mean, we
- 2:17:10Speaker 6: were talking about because people had questions about the defensive line.
- 2:17:14Speaker 6: And one of the reasons why people had questions about
- 2:17:16Speaker 6: that is guys just weren't as big as some of
- 2:17:18Speaker 6: the best defensive lines we've had here at Utah.
- 2:17:22Speaker 1: Over the years.
- 2:17:23Speaker 6: And we talked about, Hey, The way that they're talking
- 2:17:26Speaker 6: about Jai in practice, I mean, it might not matter
- 2:17:31Speaker 6: if he's not the biggest guy and he's shown it
- 2:17:33Speaker 6: so far this season.
- 2:17:36Speaker 1: All right. I put a new poll question up. Would
- 2:17:43Speaker 1: you rather Utah football versus BYU? We got the the
- 2:17:46Speaker 1: kickoff time announced on the start of our show today,
- 2:17:49Speaker 1: 10 a.m. Not a big noon kickoff game, but the
- 2:17:53Speaker 1: big noon kickoff time.
- 2:17:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:17:55Speaker 1: Noon Eastern 10 a.m.
- 2:17:56Speaker 2: Local.
- 2:17:57Speaker 6: Did they, I haven't seen, they haven't game day as
- 2:18:00Speaker 6: an announced where there'll be that day.
- 2:18:01Speaker 1: Right. Okay. So still, that's still a possibility. Notre Dame
- 2:18:05Speaker 1: Miami is playing that day.
- 2:18:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:18:07Speaker 6: So Ole Miss Georgia, It feels like maybe probably one
- 2:18:11Speaker 6: of those two games.
- 2:18:11Speaker 1: You know what? Pat McAfee is probably crying and doesn't want,
- 2:18:15Speaker 1: doesn't want college game day to come to Salt Lake
- 2:18:17Speaker 1: city ever again. And that's fine, Pat.
- 2:18:20Speaker 6: Because some students asked other students to do a, to
- 2:18:24Speaker 6: do Pat McAfee impersonations.
- 2:18:25Speaker 1: Like it's some kind of insult. Maybe come on, maybe
- 2:18:28Speaker 1: develop something new in your bit and don't just take
- 2:18:31Speaker 1: your shirt off every time. Sorry that you were predictable
- 2:18:34Speaker 1: and the students called you out for it. Who cares, Pat? Anyway, um,
- 2:18:39Speaker 1: Would you rather they play at 10 a.m. Mountain Time, 5.30 p.m.,
- 2:18:43Speaker 1: and you go opposite Notre Dame-Miami? On CBS Sports Network,
- 2:18:47Speaker 1: no doubt. Something like that. Or another night game at
- 2:18:51Speaker 1: Rice-Eckel Stadium. Right now, 77% of the votes, and I
- 2:18:55Speaker 1: just put this thing up. One vote has come in
- 2:18:58Speaker 1: for 10 a.m. kick, so it tells you how people
- 2:19:00Speaker 1: are feeling about the actual kickoff time. 77% of the
- 2:19:04Speaker 1: votes are coming in. Go ahead and go opposite Notre Dame-Miami, 5.30 p.m.,
- 2:19:09Speaker 1: And then 20% are coming in on another night game. So,
- 2:19:14Speaker 1: and that's why I asked it because we got to
- 2:19:16Speaker 1: a point where people are complaining about too many night games.
- 2:19:19Speaker 1: I mean, Mark, Mark Harlan publicly last week said, look,
- 2:19:23Speaker 1: I talked to ESPN. I talked to Brett Yormark. We
- 2:19:27Speaker 1: want to spread these out a little bit more. Now
- 2:19:30Speaker 1: I need to be clear. The athletic department doesn't like
- 2:19:33Speaker 1: the TV network is going to make the decision that
- 2:19:35Speaker 1: they want to make. They're going to put the games
- 2:19:38Speaker 1: where they put the games. Officially, what the athletic department
- 2:19:46Speaker 1: or the university president or even Brett Yormark want doesn't
- 2:19:50Speaker 1: have to be taken into account by ESPN and ABC.
- 2:19:54Speaker 1: And probably isn't. But they're going to express their ideas.
- 2:19:58Speaker 1: It was just a week ago that there was like a, hey, yeah,
- 2:20:02Speaker 1: these are great, but can we not have so many
- 2:20:04Speaker 1: of them?
- 2:20:05Speaker 4: And.
- 2:20:06Speaker 1: That was the sentiment when we were at the game
- 2:20:09Speaker 1: last weekend. Hey, another night came and people were like, yeah, man,
- 2:20:13Speaker 1: we've had too many of these this year. And I'm like,
- 2:20:14Speaker 1: what are we doing? Look at a gift horse in
- 2:20:16Speaker 1: the mouth. We get seven home games this year, six
- 2:20:19Speaker 1: in most years. You could give them to me whenever
- 2:20:22Speaker 1: you want, but I understand, right? Feel how you want
- 2:20:25Speaker 1: to feel about it. Nobody wants this at 10 a.m.
- 2:20:28Speaker 1: Everybody wants it at 5.30. Very few people want it
- 2:20:32Speaker 1: at 8.15. And that, that person wants it at 10 AM.
- 2:20:36Speaker 1: Technically one person that, that is, but at real OC
- 2:20:39Speaker 1: sports to vote on the poll for me, I don't
- 2:20:42Speaker 1: care if the rest of the nation watches this game.
- 2:20:46Speaker 1: So I wish they were catering this to the local
- 2:20:48Speaker 1: audience more, but again, you, you can't whether Brett, your
- 2:20:54Speaker 1: mark can call ESPN and say, put it here or
- 2:20:56Speaker 1: don't put it here. You can't say at big 12
- 2:21:00Speaker 1: media days, the reason we put this game here is
- 2:21:03Speaker 1: because we don't want it to get buried. And then
- 2:21:07Speaker 1: when it's given like a prominent spot, be mad that
- 2:21:13Speaker 1: it's given a prominent spot. So I, you can't, there's
- 2:21:16Speaker 1: gotta be somebody, I don't know who it is. There's
- 2:21:19Speaker 1: gotta be somebody that has the bat phone. It's probably
- 2:21:22Speaker 1: only big 10 commissioner, people of Aqua, the Notre Dame guy.
- 2:21:27Speaker 1: maybe Sankey down in the sec. They're probably the only
- 2:21:29Speaker 1: ones with the bat phone that could pick it up
- 2:21:31Speaker 1: and say, I don't want this game here, or I
- 2:21:34Speaker 1: do want this game here. And the networks listen to them. Yeah, probably.
- 2:21:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:21:40Speaker 1: I want Brett your mark to have that level of influence,
- 2:21:43Speaker 1: but for me, I don't need the game to be
- 2:21:46Speaker 1: nationally prominent for the big 12. They do. For the
- 2:21:51Speaker 1: university of Utah. I think it's better for the universities,
- 2:21:55Speaker 1: like overall kind of outward public facing stance that, Hey, look,
- 2:22:02Speaker 1: this is a big time game. This, we are putting
- 2:22:04Speaker 1: them in this time slot for the locals in the stands.
- 2:22:08Speaker 1: You're going to be there. You're going to be crazy.
- 2:22:09Speaker 1: You're going to be loud. You're going to be caffeinated.
- 2:22:11Speaker 1: You're going to be full of bacon and cinnamon rolls.
- 2:22:14Speaker 1: And it's just going to be a little bit different
- 2:22:16Speaker 1: than a night game.
- 2:22:18Speaker 6: Some full of omelets, no doubt, too. Like, just breakfast, food, waffles.
- 2:22:23Speaker 6: Let's go.
- 2:22:23Speaker 1: Hashtag Big 12 after dawn. I don't know. Anyway, vote
- 2:22:30Speaker 1: on the poll at Real OC Sports. We got to
- 2:22:31Speaker 1: make sure we take a break here. We're giving away
- 2:22:35Speaker 1: a Cafe Zhao Asian Cafe gift card next with a
- 2:22:40Speaker 1: little trivia. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 2:22:51Speaker 5: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 2:22:54Speaker 5: best inside of your youths. Let's get back to OC
- 2:22:58Speaker 5: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 792.1 FM. Let
- 2:23:03Speaker 5: me tell you.

- 2:23:12Speaker 1: I hope you're already joined up to the Zao Rewards Club.
- 2:23:17Speaker 1: Zao Asian Cafe. How about this? Fresh, simple food.
- 2:23:21Speaker 2: Asian.
- 2:23:22Speaker 1: That's their words. My words also. Delicious. Healthy. Incredible. Had
- 2:23:28Speaker 1: it at the tailgate on Saturday night. Utah versus Houston.
- 2:23:31Speaker 1: Had it this morning on the show for the hot lunch.
- 2:23:35Speaker 1: And now we're going to give you an opportunity to
- 2:23:39Speaker 1: get some Zhao in you. $ 25 gift card to Zhao
- 2:23:43Speaker 1: Asian Cafe. If you could answer this trivia question.
- 2:23:46Speaker 6: 877-353-0700.
- 2:23:46Speaker 1: Devin Dampier. led Utah in rushing in the game against Houston.
- 2:23:56Speaker 1: What was his rushing average? Average yards per carry in
- 2:24:01Speaker 1: that game.
- 2:24:03Speaker 2: 877-353-0700.
- 2:24:05Speaker 1: My recommendation for you when you go to Zao Asian Cafe,
- 2:24:08Speaker 1: I went white rice, the natural chicken. They also have
- 2:24:12Speaker 1: the orange chicken. They've got plenty of options. You can
- 2:24:14Speaker 1: get steak. You can get tofu. I went natural chicken,
- 2:24:18Speaker 1: double meat, green curry, Yes. On the pickled onions. Yes.
- 2:24:23Speaker 1: On the corn. Yes. On the carrots. Yes. On the cilantro.
- 2:24:26Speaker 1: Load that bad boy up and enjoy you some Zao
- 2:24:30Speaker 1: Asian cafe. Tell him that you heard about it on
- 2:24:33Speaker 1: the Sean O'Connell show. When you roll through, maybe if
- 2:24:35Speaker 1: you're lucky, you'll do it with a $ 25 gift card,
- 2:24:39Speaker 1: courtesy of Zao Asian cafe and ESPN 700 and 92,
- 2:24:41Speaker 1: one FM. Um, Guys, last thing for the show today.
- 2:24:49Speaker 1: I am all the way in. I am signing up
- 2:24:53Speaker 1: for the Pat McAfee versus University of Utah beef. He
- 2:24:58Speaker 1: went on his show today and talked about how uncomfortable
- 2:25:01Speaker 1: he was at the University of Utah. He was so
- 2:25:04Speaker 1: uncomfortable that he decided to make... He alluded to the
- 2:25:09Speaker 1: assassination of Charlie Kirk on the UVU campus. That's how
- 2:25:12Speaker 1: sensitive Pat McAfee is when the university Instagram account... put
- 2:25:18Speaker 1: a jokingly critical video about him out. I just, I
- 2:25:27Speaker 1: absolutely love.
- 2:25:29Speaker 1: If you want to be, and look, he's charismatic. He's
- 2:25:32Speaker 1: got his own thing going. He has one at life. Okay.
- 2:25:36Speaker 1: He's in movies. He just recorded an album. He's got
- 2:25:39Speaker 1: a humongous show. He's got more money than he knows
- 2:25:42Speaker 1: what to do with. He's got college kids complaining about
- 2:25:45Speaker 1: getting million dollar kick opportunities from him. He's won, okay?
- 2:25:49Speaker 1: But I love a good beef, all right? And I
- 2:25:52Speaker 1: hope that Pat McAfee never wants to come back to
- 2:25:54Speaker 1: Salt Lake City because you can't have it both ways, okay?
- 2:25:57Speaker 1: You cannot be the media outlaw that I do it
- 2:25:59Speaker 1: every way I want and be a silly nanny sensitive guy,
- 2:26:04Speaker 1: all right? You can't cry about an Instagram video and
- 2:26:08Speaker 1: be the one who... gets the curse on ESPN. You
- 2:26:12Speaker 1: can't have it both ways. And guess what else you
- 2:26:13Speaker 1: can't have? You can't have Ryan Smith's hand in your
- 2:26:17Speaker 1: pocket and your hand in his pocket. And you can't
- 2:26:20Speaker 1: be cuddling with each other and also have Utah love you.
- 2:26:24Speaker 1: So I, I enjoy this beef. All right. Pat McAfee
- 2:26:28Speaker 1: is a BYU guy and that's totally fine with me.
- 2:26:32Speaker 1: And guess what? Dave Portnoy, he's a BYU guy, Utah
- 2:26:36Speaker 1: versus everybody, baby. Including, well, no, not including Spence check.
- 2:26:44Speaker 1: It's he's, he's pro Utah.
- 2:26:45Speaker 15: I spent, that would have been a weird continuation of
- 2:26:48Speaker 15: the list. If you threw my name on it.
- 2:26:50Speaker 1: Well, I think of Dave Portnoy, Ryan Smith, Pat McAfee,
- 2:26:54Speaker 1: Spence check. It's same category.
- 2:26:56Speaker 8: Well, if the bank accounts line up, then I'm really
- 2:26:58Speaker 8: fine with that.
- 2:26:59Speaker 1: They all look the same.
- 2:27:00Speaker 15: Look, man, number one, I'm, I'm the wrong guy for this.
- 2:27:07Speaker 15: I can't stand this dude. He makes my blood boil.
- 2:27:12Speaker 15: There's something about Pat McAfee that bothers me greatly. I
- 2:27:16Speaker 15: don't get his appeal. I never have. I don't understand. Like,
- 2:27:20Speaker 15: for instance, the only time I hear anything Stephen A.
- 2:27:23Speaker 15: Smith says is on accident.
- 2:27:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:27:26Speaker 15: I'm never watching his show. I don't know what his
- 2:27:29Speaker 15: thoughts are on anything. And I feel the same way
- 2:27:33Speaker 15: about Pat McAfee. The only time I ever hear anything
- 2:27:35Speaker 15: that Pat McAfee says is accidental.
- 2:27:38Speaker 8: I don't watch his show.
- 2:27:40Speaker 15: I don't watch Game Day anymore because of Pat McAfee.
- 2:27:44Speaker 15: I didn't watch the Game Day show in Salt Lake.
- 2:27:47Speaker 15: I didn't watch it in Provo. I find him so irritating.
- 2:27:52Speaker 8: But this.
- 2:27:54Speaker 15: Development has revealed him like this fragile court gesture, right? This,
- 2:28:03Speaker 15: this small little man, baby clown who stands up in
- 2:28:09Speaker 15: front of audiences of millions and millions of people every
- 2:28:12Speaker 15: day and take shots at people every single day, left
- 2:28:16Speaker 15: and right has revealed himself to be the worst type
- 2:28:21Speaker 15: of person, the type of bully that can dish it
- 2:28:24Speaker 15: out and dishes it out on a daily basis and
- 2:28:29Speaker 15: But as soon as one little piece of pushback comes
- 2:28:31Speaker 15: his way, he cowards away like the man baby that
- 2:28:34Speaker 15: he is.
- 2:28:35Speaker 8: He is a fragile clown.
- 2:28:37Speaker 15: He is a court jester that has marched out in
- 2:28:40Speaker 15: front of audiences to entertain people.
- 2:28:44Speaker 1: And when.
- 2:28:46Speaker 15: He gets a little bit of a taste of his
- 2:28:47Speaker 15: own medicine, he reveals himself to be this fragile, weak.
- 2:28:55Speaker 2: Fraud.
- 2:28:56Speaker 15: In my opinion and he's he said at the end
- 2:28:58Speaker 15: of the uh... of the show on the clip that
- 2:29:00Speaker 15: was going around to take houston he said i hope
- 2:29:03Speaker 15: i see you never and i guess what that the
- 2:29:07Speaker 15: feeling is mutual pal you know what i don't ever
- 2:29:09Speaker 15: i don't give a rip if you ever stepped foot
- 2:29:11Speaker 15: in the salt lake city again high again.
- 2:29:15Speaker 8: Is that you play this clip on accident.
- 2:29:19Speaker 15: Again on the wrong guy for this cuz i i
- 2:29:22Speaker 15: don't get it there's so many things Like Pete Davidson
- 2:29:26Speaker 15: is not funny at all. There are so many things
- 2:29:29Speaker 15: about this generation that I don't get Pat McAfee among them.
- 2:29:34Speaker 15: And I hate what ESPN has done with Stephen A.
- 2:29:37Speaker 15: Smith and Pat McAfee having to lay off 150 people,
- 2:29:41Speaker 15: some of whom I knew.
- 2:29:41Speaker 8: Because I don't find him funny. I don't find him informative.
- 2:29:47Speaker 8: I don't find him entertaining.
- 2:29:49Speaker 15: So when it comes to this whole deal, how it's
- 2:29:50Speaker 15: gone down, I'm the wrong guy for it because I
- 2:29:53Speaker 15: think he's a clown anyway. I, I, I bear no.
- 2:29:57Speaker 1: Such ill will towards Pat McAfee in general, but I
- 2:30:01Speaker 1: really think this beef is a good thing. So like
- 2:30:04Speaker 1: the way that you manage this, if you're the university
- 2:30:07Speaker 1: of Utah is you lean all the way in and
- 2:30:10Speaker 1: you say game day, come back. Don't bring that idiot. Like,
- 2:30:13Speaker 1: just do it. Just, just live in this space. He
- 2:30:17Speaker 1: doesn't like you. You don't like him. You don't always
- 2:30:20Speaker 1: have to get along. I love this. I'm happy for this.
- 2:30:23Speaker 1: It like, I feel as though, again, he's our age,
- 2:30:28Speaker 1: my age, he's being sensitive about what college kids standing
- 2:30:34Speaker 1: in line for game day are saying about him. Knock
- 2:30:36Speaker 1: it off.
- 2:30:37Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 2:30:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Like you, you can't be sensitive about that thing
- 2:30:41Speaker 1: and also be like this gunslinger. So Utah is as
- 2:30:45Speaker 1: far on the right side of this thing as you
- 2:30:47Speaker 1: can be. The girl kicking for college game day maybe
- 2:30:52Speaker 1: shouldn't have said, I only get one million. Like, that's
- 2:30:54Speaker 1: probably not what you should say when you get your
- 2:30:56Speaker 1: four seconds of fame on TV.
- 2:30:58Speaker 8: It was a bad look.
- 2:30:59Speaker 1: However, lean into it. I want anti-Pat McAfee shirts the
- 2:31:05Speaker 1: next time they come. That's what I want.
- 2:31:07Speaker 8: The only thing worse than complaining about the money was
- 2:31:09Speaker 8: the kick.
- 2:31:11Speaker 1: The kicks.
- 2:31:12Speaker 8: The poor girl.
- 2:31:14Speaker 1: No, not poor girl. Don't sign up to kick if
- 2:31:17Speaker 1: you're that bad at kicking.
- 2:31:19Speaker 15: Like it was bad that she complained, but it was
- 2:31:21Speaker 15: worse that that's what the kicks turned out to be.
- 2:31:22Speaker 1: You know what the craziest part of it was too?
- 2:31:24Speaker 1: Is like everyone else, there's like this kind of grand
- 2:31:27Speaker 1: pause before they kick. Like Kirk herb street gets down
- 2:31:32Speaker 1: and he gets ready to hold the ball. And then
- 2:31:34Speaker 1: Pat kind of gets out of the way and the
- 2:31:36Speaker 1: camera just, and everyone's like, okay, are we ready? Is
- 2:31:38Speaker 1: everyone ready? Crowd makes one more pop. And then it's
- 2:31:41Speaker 1: kind of like a one, two, three. And then there's
- 2:31:43Speaker 1: a kick.
- 2:31:44Speaker 3: Nope.
- 2:31:45Speaker 1: Our girl Morgan, as soon as Kirk herb street got down,
- 2:31:49Speaker 1: put hand on ball.
- 2:31:51Speaker 12: She Kick again.
- 2:31:54Speaker 1: It was like, whoa. Take a pause. Take a breath.
- 2:31:57Speaker 1: It was as bad as it could possibly be.
- 2:31:59Speaker 15: I hate to say this, but as soon as they
- 2:32:01Speaker 15: showed who the kicker was.
- 2:32:02Speaker 8: I was just like, okay. It's not going to go well.
- 2:32:05Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:32:06Speaker 3: Dicey.
- 2:32:06Speaker 1: Dicey territory. You're right.
- 2:32:11Speaker 15: And then she ran straight and tried to kick it
- 2:32:13Speaker 15: with her toe. If you're going to sign up for
- 2:32:16Speaker 15: the opportunity, just maybe take some practice kicks throughout the week.
- 2:32:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:32:21Speaker 15: And then this clown, this fragile man-baby, has the nerve
- 2:32:25Speaker 15: to bring up Charlie Kirk's assassination, intertwined in the conversation
- 2:32:31Speaker 15: about why he felt uncomfortable. Like, dude, this guy, man, again,
- 2:32:34Speaker 15: and I want to reiterate what you said earlier. I
- 2:32:37Speaker 15: say this all the time. This is a tough business
- 2:32:42Speaker 15: to last in. It's a tough business to last in
- 2:32:45Speaker 15: on any level. And certainly... in the modern day with
- 2:32:50Speaker 15: podcasts and social media, traditional sports media is a hard
- 2:32:56Speaker 15: place to carve some real estate out for yourself and
- 2:32:59Speaker 15: certainly a really hard place to achieve the level of
- 2:33:02Speaker 15: success that he has.
- 2:33:04Speaker 1: Well, it's like unprecedented what he has done.
- 2:33:06Speaker 8: So, I mean, I say this about Stephen A.
- 2:33:08Speaker 3: Smith.
- 2:33:09Speaker 8: Not my thing.
- 2:33:10Speaker 1: Not my deal.
- 2:33:10Speaker 8: Good for him. Pat McAfee, not my thing. Not my deal.
- 2:33:14Speaker 8: I don't get it.
- 2:33:15Speaker 1: I never have.
- 2:33:16Speaker 15: Barstool Sports has never been anything... Again, Portnoy, if I
- 2:33:21Speaker 15: hear anything he has to say, it's because some pizza
- 2:33:23Speaker 15: video has gone viral or whatever. I don't seek this
- 2:33:27Speaker 15: stuff out, but they're the ones that have carved out
- 2:33:30Speaker 15: this portion of real estate, tapping into whatever nerve they've
- 2:33:34Speaker 15: tapped into to the tunes of hundreds of millions of dollars.
- 2:33:37Speaker 8: So good for them. But it's just, it's not for me.
- 2:33:40Speaker 15: And so when I hear Pat McAfee talking smack on
- 2:33:43Speaker 15: my school and my city, my reaction is good riddance, dude.
- 2:33:48Speaker 8: You say, I hope I never see again. Well, guess what?
- 2:33:51Speaker 8: The feeling's mutual. For me, at least.
- 2:33:53Speaker 1: I like it. In the funnest way, I like this.
- 2:33:57Speaker 1: I hope the beef. I want the university and everyone
- 2:34:00Speaker 1: involved to deliberately escalate it. Print the t-shirts. Put the
- 2:34:06Speaker 1: unedited posts out. Bring them all to the front. Because
- 2:34:09Speaker 1: just lean in, man. No such thing as bad publicity.
- 2:34:13Speaker 1: Let them talk about you and Pat McAfee not getting along.
- 2:34:16Speaker 8: You know that's not going to happen, though, right?
- 2:34:18Speaker 1: I know it's not going to happen. I want it to, though.
- 2:34:20Speaker 1: There's got to be some rogue social media intern up
- 2:34:23Speaker 1: there that's just like, yeah, man, he didn't like the
- 2:34:26Speaker 1: way we edited that video. We only showed the funniest,
- 2:34:29Speaker 1: kindest stuff. I want the real bad stuff.
- 2:34:33Speaker 15: So what was said that got his ire the most,
- 2:34:36Speaker 15: that he was a creep because he takes his shirt
- 2:34:38Speaker 15: off in front.
- 2:34:39Speaker 8: Of young women?
- 2:34:39Speaker 1: Somebody was like, why is he taking his shirt off?
- 2:34:41Speaker 1: It's creepy. He takes his shirt off in front of
- 2:34:43Speaker 1: college kids or whatever.
- 2:34:44Speaker 6: And if I'll interject, he mentioned multiple times, including on Saturday,
- 2:34:49Speaker 6: about the guy who said he's probably going to say
- 2:34:51Speaker 6: something corny. He mentioned multiple times he didn't like that
- 2:34:54Speaker 6: he was being called corny.
- 2:34:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay.
- 2:34:57Speaker 6: And if you watch it, Spence, you remember when wherever
- 2:35:00Speaker 6: Dick Vitale would go, they would have like a Dick
- 2:35:02Speaker 6: Vitale impersonation contest. And it was always tongue in cheek
- 2:35:06Speaker 6: and like hilarious. That's all they were trying to do.
- 2:35:09Speaker 6: And that's honestly all the nature of that post was,
- 2:35:13Speaker 6: was kids going, well, let's see, let me think of
- 2:35:16Speaker 6: Pat McAfee.
- 2:35:16Speaker 1: Well, he'll probably do this.
- 2:35:17Speaker 6: And one kid decided to say that he'll probably say
- 2:35:21Speaker 6: something corny, like grow.
- 2:35:22Speaker 9: Up, Pat.
- 2:35:23Speaker 15: Well, and also he will say something corny because he's
- 2:35:26Speaker 15: a corny dude.
- 2:35:26Speaker 1: Dude, that's just lean in. Pat will lean in because
- 2:35:30Speaker 1: it'll get him more views. University of Utah. Lean in.
- 2:35:33Speaker 1: Get yourself. Make yourself the last bastion of hope for
- 2:35:38Speaker 1: all the Pat McAfee haters. I got one sitting right
- 2:35:40Speaker 1: in front of me here. He already loves you, but
- 2:35:42Speaker 1: there's Spences in every city. They will love a university
- 2:35:47Speaker 1: taking on Pat McAfee. Go for it.
- 2:35:50Speaker 15: The other weird deal is once people start to impersonate you,
- 2:35:53Speaker 15: it indicates you've reached a certain level of fame.
- 2:35:55Speaker 2: Of course.
- 2:35:56Speaker 15: It's like Keenan on SNL. His Stephen A. Smith is hilarious.
- 2:36:00Speaker 15: You know, like SNL's done Stephen A.
- 2:36:02Speaker 3: Smith.
- 2:36:03Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:36:03Speaker 8: Have they done McAfee yet?
- 2:36:05Speaker 1: Probably.
- 2:36:06Speaker 8: I honestly don't know.
- 2:36:08Speaker 15: But yeah, look, I didn't see the social media post
- 2:36:12Speaker 15: about the students imitating him, but the clip of him.
- 2:36:15Speaker 1: Because the school took it down.
- 2:36:17Speaker 9: Oh, did they?
- 2:36:18Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:36:18Speaker 8: See, they're not leaning in, man.
- 2:36:19Speaker 1: They took it down because he was mad about it.
- 2:36:21Speaker 15: But the clip of him bitching and moaning and whining
- 2:36:24Speaker 15: today was making the rounds.
- 2:36:26Speaker 2: So....
- 2:36:28Speaker 15: It is, I mean, to use a term the kids say,
- 2:36:31Speaker 15: it is Charmin soft, dude. For a guy that has
- 2:36:34Speaker 15: that level, it reminds me of like Kevin Durant checking Twitter.
- 2:36:39Speaker 15: I'm like, what are you doing? You're worth $ 700 million
- 2:36:42Speaker 15: and you're one of the best offensive players of this generation.
- 2:36:47Speaker 15: You don't need to know what. At RocketFan473 thinks about
- 2:36:51Speaker 15: your turnover rate, dude.
- 2:36:52Speaker 8: Get offline.
- 2:36:53Speaker 1: Pablo Torre will investigate anything. I want him digging into
- 2:36:56Speaker 1: the Pat McAfee burner accounts. You know they're out there.
- 2:37:02Speaker 1: Stay tuned for the drive with Spence Jackets. We're hanging
- 2:37:05Speaker 1: out tonight, Spence. Yes, we are. Me and Spence are
- 2:37:08Speaker 1: judging a karaoke contest together.
- 2:37:10Speaker 8: Come on down to Bar Namesu.
- 2:37:13Speaker 1: Bar Namesu on Highland.
- 2:37:14Speaker 8: The one on Highland.
- 2:37:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:37:16Speaker 8: Are we performing or just judging?
- 2:37:18Speaker 1: Probably both.
- 2:37:19Speaker 8: Okay. You better show up.
- 2:37:22Speaker 1: Stay tuned for the drive. CSPN 700 and 92 on FM.
