- 1:38Speaker 5: should clear out. By the time high school football Friday
- 1:41Speaker 5: night rolls around, it's in the mid-80s. Looking like some
- 1:43Speaker 5: showers and storms around on Saturday with a high in
- 1:45Speaker 5: the mid-80s and partly sunny, dry, and warm for Sunday
- 1:48Speaker 5: with a high in the upper 80s. Download the Metro

- 1:53Speaker 5: catch Brian and his team of meteorologists. Coming up, told
- 1:56Speaker 5: you yesterday, so much going on in the area this
- 1:59Speaker 5: weekend as we head toward the weekend. If you can't
- 2:02Speaker 5: find anything to do, in the Kanawha Valley this weekend.
- 2:06Speaker 5: That is your fault. We're going to tell you about
- 2:08Speaker 5: a couple of the big events happening. One of those
- 2:09Speaker 5: in Nitro with Boomtown Days. And another big happening is
- 2:13Speaker 5: in Winfield, their annual Putnam County Homecoming. Patty Ashworth is
- 2:16Speaker 5: with the Putnam County Homecoming Group. And she joins us
- 2:19Speaker 5: this morning via the Guarantee Bank Hotline. Patty, good morning.
- 2:21Speaker 5: Welcome to the show.
- 2:23Speaker 6: Good morning. Thank you for having me.
- 2:25Speaker 5: Thank you for being here. 97 years. This is how
- 2:28Speaker 5: long this thing has been going on. Is that right?
- 2:31Speaker 6: That is correct. It's quite a lengthy county tradition.
- 2:36Speaker 5: It is indeed. So what is it that makes this
- 2:38Speaker 5: event so special? Because, I mean, events come and go,
- 2:42Speaker 5: and obviously you weren't there for all 97 years. That'd
- 2:44Speaker 5: be more like Randy Barrett that may have been there,
- 2:46Speaker 5: the mayor, for 97 years. But what is it, though,
- 2:50Speaker 5: that makes this thing so lasting and it just keeps
- 2:53Speaker 5: going on all these years and all these decades, nearly
- 2:55Speaker 5: 100 years later?
- 2:57Speaker 6: I think it's because of the people in the county
- 3:00Speaker 6: that appreciate tradition and are proud of our county. A
- 3:06Speaker 6: lot of us grew up here, and, you know, we
- 3:10Speaker 6: remember attending this as kids ourselves. We have a big
- 3:16Speaker 6: parade on Sunday afternoon that starts at 1.30 that, you know,
- 3:21Speaker 6: kids and adults really seem to enjoy and come out
- 3:26Speaker 6: for to celebrate participate in. I think a big part
- 3:31Speaker 6: of it is the fact that it's such a long-lasting tradition.
- 3:36Speaker 5: You know, I moved to Putnam County myself, Patty, in 2014,
- 3:40Speaker 5: early part of 2014, and I found myself there because
- 3:43Speaker 5: everybody said this is the thing you got to go
- 3:45Speaker 5: to in September, and within a couple of months of
- 3:47Speaker 5: moving there, I found myself there at the Putnam County
- 3:50Speaker 5: Homecoming because it's just that kind of a big deal.
- 3:53Speaker 5: You mentioned the parade, but there's so much more going
- 3:55Speaker 5: on Saturday and Sunday? Run down the entire schedule for us.
- 4:01Speaker 6: On Saturday, we have craft vendors, food vendors that will
- 4:07Speaker 6: be set up and ready to go around noon. And
- 4:11Speaker 6: then at 3.30, the entertainment kind of end of things,
- 4:18Speaker 6: We have this year something new that I'm kind of
- 4:22Speaker 6: excited about. We have the Putnam County Library coming, and
- 4:28Speaker 6: they are going to do a story time, which they
- 4:31Speaker 6: do weekly at the library for kids. But this is
- 4:35Speaker 6: the first time they've come, and so there will be
- 4:37Speaker 6: little kids there, and they're going to sing and, you know,
- 4:41Speaker 6: just do their thing that they do during story time.
- 4:46Speaker 6: And so we hope that people will bring out their
- 4:49Speaker 6: kids so their kids can participate with this, with the
- 4:53Speaker 6: librarian on the stage. At 4 o'clock, by request, we
- 5:00Speaker 6: have brought back the Putnam's Got Talent show this year.
- 5:04Speaker 6: We've had several people say, oh, I wish we would
- 5:07Speaker 6: do that again. So we have a young mom that
- 5:12Speaker 6: has stepped up and said, hey, I'll help with that
- 5:16Speaker 6: because we're like everybody else. We need all the help
- 5:21Speaker 6: we can get. They're going to have several acts, some
- 5:29Speaker 6: pretty good stuff too.
- 5:34Speaker 5: What kind of talent are you looking for there? Are
- 5:36Speaker 5: there any criteria? Are you looking for singers? Are you
- 5:38Speaker 5: looking for joke tellers? What are you looking for as
- 5:40Speaker 5: far as the talent goes?
- 5:42Speaker 6: We are looking for anybody that does Anything that is acceptable.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Anything that shows off their talent, right? In a family
- 5:52Speaker 5: kind of way.
- 5:54Speaker 7: Right.
- 5:55Speaker 6: Remember, we're family friendly.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 5:59Speaker 6: So, yeah, we don't have any like, oh, we just
- 6:02Speaker 6: want musical people or we just want joke tellers or
- 6:08Speaker 6: that kind of thing. We want anyone that is willing
- 6:10Speaker 6: to come and just have fun with us and share
- 6:14Speaker 6: something else. I think one of the things that happened
- 6:16Speaker 6: a couple of years ago, I remember this, and everybody
- 6:20Speaker 6: still talks about this. We had a lady come, and
- 6:23Speaker 6: she did a chicken dance. And she was dressed in
- 6:26Speaker 6: a costume. It was hilarious. And everybody still talks about
- 6:32Speaker 6: the lady that did the chicken dance. So, you know,
- 6:37Speaker 6: like I said, no particular criteria except, remember, we're family-friendly
- 6:43Speaker 6: and very geared to children. And so we just want
- 6:49Speaker 6: you to come and share what you have and possibly
- 6:52Speaker 6: win $ 500.
- 6:53Speaker 4: All right.
- 6:53Speaker 5: Cool prize.
- 6:56Speaker 6: Yeah, $ 500 prize for the one that wins. We have
- 7:00Speaker 6: several different judges so that it's not just one person's opinion.
- 7:04Speaker 6: You know, it'll be a group thing. And we will
- 7:09Speaker 6: take entries right up until... let's say three o'clock.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Okay. So just show up, just show up. If you
- 7:18Speaker 5: want to enter, just plan on showing up. And is
- 7:20Speaker 5: there a like maximum number you can take? Because I've
- 7:23Speaker 5: done events like this in the past, Patty, and you know, it's, uh, everybody,
- 7:27Speaker 5: everybody wants to have a good time and get out there, participate,
- 7:29Speaker 5: maybe pick up $ 500, but you can't have 35 or
- 7:32Speaker 5: 40 entries either. You'll be there till Sunday.
- 7:35Speaker 6: Uh, that is correct. And, uh, You know, I hadn't
- 7:39Speaker 6: really thought about that, to be honest.
- 7:41Speaker 5: We'll get an answer. We'll get an answer, and I'll
- 7:44Speaker 5: have it for you a little bit later on in
- 7:45Speaker 5: the week as we get closer. All right, take us
- 7:47Speaker 5: through the rest of the schedule after Putnam's Got Talent.
- 7:50Speaker 6: Then after that, we have John Byrd's band that's going
- 7:55Speaker 6: to perform at 5 o'clock and 5 to 7, and
- 7:59Speaker 6: then at 7.30, we've had a young man that is
- 8:06Speaker 6: originally from Kentucky, but he, I understand, may be living
- 8:10Speaker 6: in Huntington now. He is going to be there to
- 8:14Speaker 6: perform from 7.30 until 8.30. He's a singer, and so
- 8:22Speaker 6: we're hoping that Putnam County will come out and enjoy
- 8:26Speaker 6: his music and welcome him to Putnam County.
- 8:30Speaker 5: All right, let's fast forward now to Sunday because Sunday
- 8:33Speaker 5: is always a big day for the homecoming.
- 8:35Speaker 6: Yes. On Sunday, we start the day out at 10
- 8:41Speaker 6: o'clock with a flag raising. Winfield High School's band always
- 8:46Speaker 6: is kind enough. They come down and do a flag
- 8:50Speaker 6: raising ceremony and a little concert usually afterwards. At 1045,
- 8:56Speaker 6: a church service. We have a community church service. The
- 9:01Speaker 6: churches in town kind of go together. They plan this.
- 9:05Speaker 6: They take care of the whole Shamil. And I'm not
- 9:09Speaker 6: sure if there's anything special they have. I've been told
- 9:13Speaker 6: that Keith Tyler will be the one that will be
- 9:17Speaker 6: speaking that day. But it's a non-denominational service, and we
- 9:26Speaker 6: usually have a good turnout for that. And then after
- 9:31Speaker 6: the church service.
- 9:34Speaker 7: At....
- 9:36Speaker 6: Noon, I know the candidates for Miss Putnam County will
- 9:43Speaker 6: be introduced on the stage, and everybody will get an
- 9:46Speaker 6: opportunity to see who is representing their community or their school.
- 9:52Speaker 6: And after that, we have a group of Irish dancers here.
- 10:00Speaker 6: young kids, teenagers and younger, that are with the dance
- 10:05Speaker 6: school out on Red House Hill. Chantel McCormick has that group. And,
- 10:13Speaker 6: you know, when I was a kid, I can remember
- 10:16Speaker 6: the 4-H'ers. In this county, they had this little Irish dancers.
- 10:22Speaker 6: And it's great to watch them because they're learning and
- 10:26Speaker 6: being taught traditional dance that goes back a long, long way.
- 10:32Speaker 6: And they just do a great little job. And so
- 10:36Speaker 6: they're going to be doing that. And at 1.30, the
- 10:39Speaker 6: parade starts. we have Joey's Step, and usually the parade
- 10:50Speaker 6: lasts an hour to an hour and a half.
- 10:53Speaker 5: It's a big parade. I've been in that parade before
- 10:55Speaker 5: for various things. It's a pretty big parade, Patty.
- 10:59Speaker 6: Well, at 3 o'clock, we have Joey's Step, and anybody
- 11:06Speaker 6: that lives in this area is probably familiar with Joey.
- 11:11Speaker 6: He is a magician. When he's not being... one of
- 11:15Speaker 6: our kids' school counselors. He's a great entertainer. I think
- 11:21Speaker 6: this summer he has entertained all over the country, literally.
- 11:26Speaker 8: He has.
- 11:27Speaker 5: He's very good at what he does.
- 11:29Speaker 6: Yeah, and he's such a nice man.
- 11:31Speaker 5: He is.
- 11:32Speaker 6: And so he will be here. Now, before the parade,
- 11:37Speaker 6: when the crowd is gathering for the parade and stuff,
- 11:40Speaker 6: I think he's going to do some what I call
- 11:42Speaker 6: street parades. street magic you know where he just kind
- 11:46Speaker 6: of walks around and he'll talk to people and show
- 11:49Speaker 6: them little magic tricks and stuff and people love it
- 11:53Speaker 6: and then at uh three o'clock he will be on
- 11:56Speaker 6: stage and we'll do a show um golly gee i'm
- 12:01Speaker 6: trying to think what else we've got well.
- 12:03Speaker 5: I mean it sounds like as you say you're you're
- 12:05Speaker 5: pretty chock full of stuff there well we gotta we
- 12:07Speaker 5: gotta bring it to a close but what else have
- 12:09Speaker 5: you got.
- 12:11Speaker 6: We've got carnival games. We've got the wildlife discovery. Is
- 12:18Speaker 6: that what it's called over in Taze Valley that is
- 12:22Speaker 6: based at the Valley Park? They're coming and bringing their
- 12:28Speaker 6: animals for the kids to be able to see. We've
- 12:31Speaker 6: got just a lot of different things like that for kids.
- 12:36Speaker 6: And the big thing is everything is free.
- 12:39Speaker 5: Everything is free. Now, again, If I'm correct about this,
- 12:43Speaker 5: isn't there a part of this that, because, you know,
- 12:45Speaker 5: Winfield is the home to the West Virginia Drag Racing
- 12:47Speaker 5: Hall of Fame. And is there a cruising associated with this,
- 12:50Speaker 5: or is this at a different time?
- 12:51Speaker 1: Yes.
- 12:52Speaker 6: Friday evening, before, you know, but Friday evening, there will
- 12:59Speaker 6: be a car show. It'll be located down at City Hall,
- 13:04Speaker 6: next to the thing. And anybody that knows anything about
- 13:07Speaker 6: car shows, I'm sure, has met Jim Winter and you know,
- 13:11Speaker 6: that they're having a car show down there Friday night.
- 13:15Speaker 5: All right. Where's the best place for people to get
- 13:17Speaker 5: a rundown of all the activities, Patty?
- 13:20Speaker 6: PutnamCountyHomecoming.com.
- 13:24Speaker 5: It is a very good looking website. I was looking
- 13:26Speaker 5: at it earlier. You've got everything all spelled out there.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Plus you do a great job on social media as well.
- 13:30Speaker 5: So again, the things will get started really tomorrow night
- 13:32Speaker 5: with the car show full of activities on Saturday and
- 13:35Speaker 5: Sunday as well. Lots of music. Putnam's got talent. You
- 13:38Speaker 5: got the The beauty pageant, you know, the Queen of
- 13:41Speaker 5: Putnam County will be announced. It's just a great, great
- 13:43Speaker 5: activity that's going on there. 97 years this thing has
- 13:46Speaker 5: been going on, the Putnam County Homecoming. Patty Ashworth, always
- 13:49Speaker 5: a pleasure to talk to you. Good luck, and I'll
- 13:51Speaker 5: see you this weekend.
- 13:53Speaker 6: All right. Thank you so much.
- 13:54Speaker 5: You as well. 922, the Dave Allen Show on 580 Live,

- 14:06Speaker 5: if you can't find something to do in the Kanawha Valley,
- 14:08Speaker 5: somebody said to me earlier, they said, why are all
- 14:10Speaker 5: these things going on on one weekend? I said, well,
- 14:11Speaker 5: I don't know. I'm not in the planning aspect of it.
- 14:14Speaker 5: But many of these things go on this particular weekend
- 14:16Speaker 5: every year. We got so many things going on. One
- 14:18Speaker 5: of those is Boomtown Days in Nitro. We'll talk to
- 14:21Speaker 5: Joe when we come back on The Voice of Charleston, WCHS.

- 16:11Speaker 5: commemoration of 9-11 and lots of activities scheduled to Going
- 16:15Speaker 5: along with that, we'll get into that a little bit
- 16:17Speaker 5: later on as we get close. Well, I mean, it's
- 16:18Speaker 5: already Wednesday, so we lost a day, I guess, on Monday.
- 16:21Speaker 5: But anyway, check out DirtyBirdsBaseball.com if you need more information.
- 16:25Speaker 5: Talking about big events going on this weekend, Boomtown Days
- 16:28Speaker 5: in Nitro. Joe Stevenson of Nitro joins us now on
- 16:30Speaker 5: the Guarantee Bank Hotline.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Good morning, sir.
- 16:32Speaker 5: Welcome to the show.
- 16:34Speaker 11: Thank you, David.
- 16:35Speaker 8: How are you today?
- 16:36Speaker 5: I'm doing fine. What's the whole idea behind Boomtown Days, sir?
- 16:39Speaker 12: Well, in 1917, the.
- 16:43Speaker 6: U.S.
- 16:44Speaker 12: Federal government knew that they were going to be needing
- 16:47Speaker 12: more gunpowder for the World War I efforts overseas and everything.
- 16:54Speaker 12: And Nitro, this area, was chosen for a munitions plant
- 16:59Speaker 12: to provide gunpowder for the ammunition that will be used. And, well,
- 17:04Speaker 12: you know, with gunpowder, you get a big boom. And
- 17:07Speaker 12: so now we're going to have a Boomtown Day celebration.
- 17:11Speaker 12: This is an annual event. You know, you were talking
- 17:14Speaker 12: about all the events happening this weekend, and that's great.
- 17:17Speaker 12: Like you said, if you can't find something in Kanawha
- 17:19Speaker 12: Valley to do this Saturday, Friday, Sunday, what have you,
- 17:23Speaker 12: you're not trying. And with the way the calendar fell
- 17:26Speaker 12: this year, we always have it on the first Saturday,
- 17:30Speaker 12: and of September, but the first Saturday this year fell
- 17:36Speaker 12: right on Labor Day weekend, and we always have our
- 17:38Speaker 12: fireworks like we talked about last week, and so just
- 17:41Speaker 12: everybody's had to work around the calendar, and you got
- 17:43Speaker 12: something to do, and you don't have far to drive.
- 17:46Speaker 12: I mean, come on. Let's go. Let's have fun. And
- 17:49Speaker 12: it all gets underway here in Nitro about 10 o'clock
- 17:52Speaker 12: or so with the annual Boomtown Parade. It'll be going
- 17:55Speaker 12: from Pickens Road down to 19th Street along Route 25
- 18:00Speaker 12: just to kind of kick things off. And if anybody
- 18:03Speaker 12: wants to be in the parade, you just come see
- 18:05Speaker 12: me because I'll be lining everybody up and we'll get
- 18:08Speaker 12: you down the road. The Nitro Antique Car Club, the
- 18:11Speaker 12: annual show, registration will be getting underway on 2nd Avenue
- 18:16Speaker 12: right next to City Hall about 9 o'clock or so.
- 18:19Speaker 12: And some of the neatest, finest cars. Dave, I know
- 18:23Speaker 12: both of us are antiques, but we don't have four wheels,
- 18:27Speaker 12: so we can't be in it. But nonetheless, there'll be about,
- 18:30Speaker 12: I don't know, anywhere from 100 to 150 cars there.
- 18:33Speaker 12: out here for the show. That'll go on until about
- 18:36Speaker 12: 3 o'clock, 3.30, where they'll have the awards and everything.
- 18:39Speaker 12: But during the day, we will have food vendors out
- 18:43Speaker 12: here on 2nd Avenue. We will have Joey Step. You
- 18:46Speaker 12: can get to Joey a couple times on Saturday, first
- 18:50Speaker 12: at Boomtown Days, then at the Winfield Homecoming. Joey will
- 18:54Speaker 12: be here. And the big thing that we do with
- 18:56Speaker 12: Joey is he does balloons. Boy, can he ever do balloons. Oh,
- 19:00Speaker 12: he does. And he'll be walking the crowd. And, in fact,
- 19:04Speaker 12: he'll be in the parade making balloons along on the
- 19:07Speaker 12: parade and everything. So we've got Joey. We've got free
- 19:10Speaker 12: face painting. Some young ladies from Daniel Hunt's art class
- 19:15Speaker 12: over at Nitro High School will be on scene doing
- 19:18Speaker 12: free face painting for everybody. We've got the bubble machine
- 19:22Speaker 12: where the kids just love and the bouncy there. Something
- 19:25Speaker 12: new this year, we will have professional wrestling on 21st Street.
- 19:30Speaker 12: That'll be happening around 11 o'clock or so. Maximum Velocity
- 19:35Speaker 12: Wrestling will be having about five or six bouts right
- 19:39Speaker 12: there on 21st Street next to the Nitro Antique Mall.
- 19:43Speaker 12: Speaking of antiques, we will be having the first annual
- 19:48Speaker 12: Boomtown Vintage Market. right on 21st Street. We will have
- 19:53Speaker 12: things out there for people to come and enjoy and
- 19:56Speaker 12: try to buy some old stuff, some new stuff, some
- 19:59Speaker 12: collectible stuff. Tim Arnott with the Antique Mall has set
- 20:04Speaker 12: that up. We'll have live music throughout the day. The
- 20:06Speaker 12: Barnholler Band will be kicking it off. There's some local
- 20:10Speaker 12: guys and gals that always kick our Boomtown Day off.
- 20:14Speaker 12: They will start at 11. Then around 1.15 or so,
- 20:18Speaker 12: we will have the Velvet Brothers. People might remember the
- 20:21Speaker 12: Velvet Brothers or have seen the Velvet Brothers on Fridays
- 20:26Speaker 12: on the live on the levee. They also opened up
- 20:30Speaker 12: for Casey and the Sunshine Band. Yes, he's a professional pronunciator.
- 20:36Speaker 12: They will be playing. And then from your... neck of
- 20:40Speaker 12: the woods and Logan hair supply.
- 20:42Speaker 8: Oh yeah.
- 20:43Speaker 12: We'll be, uh, ending it up for us about four
- 20:45Speaker 12: o'clock or so, man. I tell you what, we've got
- 20:48Speaker 12: a lot of things going on and we will have
- 20:50Speaker 12: the discovery zone zone here. Uh, they, uh, they, they
- 20:55Speaker 12: bring my running partner every year, the big tortoise. And, um,
- 20:59Speaker 12: that's the, that's the annual, see, um, the, the 50
- 21:03Speaker 12: meter race be between he and I and, uh, He
- 21:06Speaker 12: usually wins, but that'll be happening. A lot of things happening,
- 21:10Speaker 12: you know?
- 21:11Speaker 5: Well, you know, let me put a little plug in
- 21:14Speaker 5: for hair supply for people that haven't seen or heard
- 21:16Speaker 5: about hair supply there. We call them the official party
- 21:19Speaker 5: band of our sister station, 98, seven, the mouth of
- 21:21Speaker 5: wild and wonderful classic rock. These are guys, as you said,
- 21:24Speaker 5: they got Logan County, Boone County, a little bit of
- 21:27Speaker 5: a kind of, I think there's a canal County in
- 21:28Speaker 5: there as well, but the leader of the group founder
- 21:30Speaker 5: of the group, I think it was from Logan County.
- 21:33Speaker 5: And these guys, when I say they do eighties party music,
- 21:38Speaker 5: I mean, they, they become the characters and they all
- 21:41Speaker 5: have very much like a spinal tap type thing where
- 21:44Speaker 5: they have different names and so on and so forth,
- 21:47Speaker 5: the full costume. So if you like that 80 stuff
- 21:49Speaker 5: and that's the, that's my high school stuff, man. If
- 21:51Speaker 5: you like that and the hairband stuff, we're talking about
- 21:53Speaker 5: groups like Poison and Rat and Loverboy and Bon Jovi
- 21:57Speaker 5: and all those. This is the group you need to
- 21:59Speaker 5: come out and see. These guys are fantastic. They're regulars
- 22:02Speaker 5: out at Mardi Gras Casino and Resort. They play it
- 22:04Speaker 5: all over. They literally play all over the country. And
- 22:07Speaker 5: you will not. It is impossible to be in a
- 22:09Speaker 5: bad mood when hair supply is playing. I'll say that, Joe.
- 22:13Speaker 12: And they will be hitting the stage at 415, the
- 22:16Speaker 12: Living Memorial Stage, right here at Living Memorial Park, like
- 22:20Speaker 12: I said. And also the Nitro Museum will be open
- 22:24Speaker 12: all day. We'll have a lot of information booths, too, Dave.
- 22:27Speaker 12: Just people getting information of different activities throughout the valley
- 22:32Speaker 12: and that sort of thing. But it's just going to
- 22:35Speaker 12: be a fun day here in our little part of
- 22:38Speaker 12: Kanawha Valley.
- 22:39Speaker 5: Talking to Joe Stevens again from the city of Nitro.
- 22:41Speaker 5: The Dave Allen Show on 580 Live brought to you
- 22:43Speaker 5: in part by Buy Huston's Pizza. This month at Huston's,
- 22:45Speaker 5: get a large 18-inch pepperoni pizza and an order of meatballs,
- 22:48Speaker 5: only $ 24.
- 22:49Speaker 6: 99.
- 22:49Speaker 5: Find your nearest Huston's for delivery, dine-in, or pickup at HustonsPizza.com.
- 22:54Speaker 5: For those, and Joe, you're on the show with me
- 22:56Speaker 5: a couple times a month, usually playing up the big
- 22:57Speaker 5: events going on in Nitro, but for those who may
- 22:59Speaker 5: not know, what is it about the history? Explain a
- 23:02Speaker 5: little bit of the history of the whole Boomtown thing,
- 23:04Speaker 5: and you did a little bit at the beginning there,
- 23:06Speaker 5: but this is a city, Nitro, that was actually born
- 23:09Speaker 5: out of the war movement. Tell us that story briefly.
- 23:12Speaker 12: And can you imagine when the federal government decided Nitro
- 23:16Speaker 12: was going to be a site for the making and
- 23:21Speaker 12: the producing of gunpowder for the World War I efforts
- 23:25Speaker 12: and that sort of thing? But within months, there was
- 23:30Speaker 12: a city here. There were 100,000 people here. making a city.
- 23:36Speaker 12: I mean, they were pounding nails like you would not imagine.
- 23:40Speaker 12: It just, we had a hospital here. We had three
- 23:44Speaker 12: fire stations here. We had numerous schools here. And it just,
- 23:50Speaker 12: and with that, we have always been a city that
- 23:54Speaker 12: recognizes the veterans and what the veterans have meant to
- 23:58Speaker 12: this country and to this area.
- 24:00Speaker 5: I've said before, I don't know And West Virginia is
- 24:03Speaker 5: a very patriotic state, Joe. You know that as well
- 24:05Speaker 5: as I do. I don't know that there is a city, though,
- 24:07Speaker 5: in the entire state of West Virginia. I would hazard
- 24:10Speaker 5: in the country that goes out and does more for
- 24:13Speaker 5: what its veterans, to honor veterans, than what Nitro does.
- 24:19Speaker 12: We respect them, honor them, and we'll always be glad
- 24:24Speaker 12: to be able to provide something for them that they
- 24:26Speaker 12: can understand and be respectful for. Hey, I got an
- 24:30Speaker 12: inside tip for you.
- 24:31Speaker 5: Okay, all right, all right.
- 24:33Speaker 12: You live out, I know you live out the area
- 24:35Speaker 12: that I do, and it's Sleepy Hollow Golf Course, right?
- 24:39Speaker 13: Yep, yep.
- 24:39Speaker 12: Out there, the beautiful 18-hole golf course. The original Sleepy
- 24:43Speaker 12: Hollow Golf Course, is where Ridenour Lake is.
- 24:47Speaker 5: I was going to say it was in Nitro. I
- 24:49Speaker 5: did not know that, but I was going to guess
- 24:50Speaker 5: by the tone of your voice.
- 24:52Speaker 12: Yes. Where Ridenour Lake is, and I tell you what,
- 24:57Speaker 12: that's one water hazard that I would not want to
- 25:00Speaker 12: have to hit a golf club.
- 25:01Speaker 6: All right.
- 25:01Speaker 5: Somebody's going to have to tell me the story, though.
- 25:03Speaker 5: I mean, Joe, do you know it or does somebody
- 25:05Speaker 5: else know it? One of our listeners does. What is
- 25:08Speaker 5: now Ridenour Lake was originally Sleepy Hollow Golf Club, and
- 25:11Speaker 5: now it's moved over to Taze Valley over where I live.
- 25:13Speaker 5: I mean, how does that happen? Do you have any idea?
- 25:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:18Speaker 12: And I, I have been told the story. It did
- 25:20Speaker 12: escape me at this time, but Rich Hively, who is
- 25:23Speaker 12: our city recorder and our city historian, he knows the
- 25:27Speaker 12: full A to Z kind of composition of the situation.
- 25:31Speaker 12: And I will, uh, I will find out from him
- 25:34Speaker 12: and get back.
- 25:34Speaker 5: And report back on that.
- 25:36Speaker 11: All right.
- 25:36Speaker 12: All right.
- 25:37Speaker 5: So, uh, I gotta ask you before I let you
- 25:39Speaker 5: go the last week for Labor Day weekend, you guys
- 25:41Speaker 5: had the collaborative effort between, uh, Nitro and the city
- 25:45Speaker 5: of St. Albans. It was on Sunday night. You set
- 25:47Speaker 5: off the fireworks there from the Dick Henderson Bridge. How
- 25:50Speaker 5: did everything go?
- 25:52Speaker 12: It went fine, and the weather really, really cooperated. Sometimes
- 25:57Speaker 12: when you do aerial fireworks like that, it creates a
- 26:01Speaker 12: cloud of smoke while the wind was going from the
- 26:05Speaker 12: Nitro side over to the St. Albans side, so it
- 26:08Speaker 12: was pushing it away, and all the fireworks were just
- 26:11Speaker 12: clear in the sky. We had probably 25 to 30
- 26:15Speaker 12: boats or so down in the water watching it from there.
- 26:18Speaker 12: People up on the... up on the bridge and everything,
- 26:23Speaker 12: on both sides of the banks. It went well, and
- 26:26Speaker 12: I think a lot of people had a great time.
- 26:28Speaker 12: It was a 25-minute show that everybody enjoyed.
- 26:31Speaker 5: All right, give us the rundown again for Boomtown Days
- 26:33Speaker 5: this Saturday.
- 26:34Speaker 12: Parade starts at 10 o'clock at Pickens Road, and we'll
- 26:38Speaker 12: come down First Avenue to kick things off. We've got
- 26:42Speaker 12: the Nitro Antique Car Club. That show will get underway
- 26:46Speaker 12: on Second Avenue with registration around 9 o'clock, and then
- 26:49Speaker 12: we'll have all the vendors set up and ready to
- 26:51Speaker 12: go and everything on Second Avenue, on 20th Street, on
- 26:56Speaker 12: 21st Street, getting underway pretty much at 10 o'clock or so.
- 26:59Speaker 5: And I have been, as I mentioned to you last week, Joe,
- 27:01Speaker 5: I have been voluntold that I'm going to be there
- 27:04Speaker 5: representing 98.7 Amount, the Wild and Wonderful Classic Rock. It
- 27:07Speaker 5: is quite a weekend for us here at the Radio Ranch.
- 27:10Speaker 5: All of our stations from the Beat to V100 to
- 27:12Speaker 5: KWS to the Mountain CHS. We're all out at different events.
- 27:15Speaker 5: Some of us are going to be doubling up at events,
- 27:17Speaker 5: but I will be there. You've got me. And I
- 27:20Speaker 5: think at least one other station is going to be
- 27:22Speaker 5: there in Nitro. I'll be in the big ugly truck
- 27:26Speaker 5: that we call Mountain Mama. So looking forward to seeing
- 27:28Speaker 5: you there. By the way, I don't know if you
- 27:30Speaker 5: happen to see this or not, Joe. Did you see
- 27:31Speaker 5: the video that Steve Animal did where they let him
- 27:37Speaker 5: put up the new mountain billboard there in the St.
- 27:41Speaker 5: Albans area and he put it up upside down? Have
- 27:43Speaker 5: you seen that?
- 27:44Speaker 12: I have seen pictures of it, yes, and only Steve
- 27:48Speaker 12: Z could really do something of that nature. By the way,
- 27:52Speaker 12: a good friend of yours, Steve Bishop, is our emcee
- 27:56Speaker 12: all day.
- 27:56Speaker 5: Okay, there you go. I told you, man, we're everywhere.
- 28:00Speaker 5: We are at every one of these events. But yeah,
- 28:03Speaker 5: for those that haven't seen the video of Steve Animal,
- 28:05Speaker 5: Go over to 98.7 The Mountain, Wild and Wonderful Classic
- 28:08Speaker 5: Rock on our Facebook page or on Dave Allen Radio.
- 28:10Speaker 5: And just note the expression on Steve Animal's face when
- 28:13Speaker 5: he realized that he put up the billboard upside down.
- 28:15Speaker 5: It's still hanging there, I think, just outside St.
- 28:18Speaker 10: Albans.
- 28:18Speaker 5: Hey, Joe, I'll see you Saturday morning, Boomtown Days at Nitro,
- 28:21Speaker 5: my friend. Thanks a lot.
- 28:23Speaker 12: Be safe, my friend.
- 28:24Speaker 5: 24 minutes away from 10 o'clock. Yeah, that is one
- 28:27Speaker 5: of those. And look, there may have been a little
- 28:31Speaker 5: dramatization of it, I'm just saying. But the video is
- 28:35Speaker 5: posted 98.7 The Mountain, Wild and Wonderful Classic Rock. Also,
- 28:37Speaker 5: I've got it on Dave Allen Radio as well. But
- 28:40Speaker 5: you need to go check it out. And it's caused
- 28:43Speaker 5: a lot of stir, a lot of talk, if you will,
- 28:46Speaker 5: in the community on why there is a 98.7 The Mountain,
- 28:50Speaker 5: Wild and Wonderful Classic Rock billboard hanging upside down. You
- 28:52Speaker 5: don't have to talk to Steve Hannibal about that. He's
- 28:54Speaker 5: in the video. Go Check out the video, the 98.7,
- 28:57Speaker 5: the Mountain Mama, wonderful classic rock. And as I said,
- 29:00Speaker 5: Boomtown Days is going on. I am looking forward to
- 29:02Speaker 5: seeing you there. On Saturday morning, I'll be driving the 98.7,
- 29:05Speaker 5: the Mountain Mama, wonderful classic rock, Mountain Mama truck. 23
- 29:10Speaker 5: minutes away from 10. Hey, I invite you to join
- 29:12Speaker 5: me every Friday morning, 906 for the Adopt Me, Please

- 32:41Speaker 5: Let's talk to Chris. You're on the show. Good morning, sir.
- 32:43Speaker 5: Welcome to the show.
- 32:45Speaker 8: How are you doing, Dave?
- 32:46Speaker 1: I'm doing fine.
- 32:47Speaker 8: How are you? Long time, no talk, man. I've had
- 32:51Speaker 8: some difficulties in my life. A lot of it doing
- 32:55Speaker 8: to why I'm calling you today.
- 32:57Speaker 5: Okay, go ahead.
- 33:00Speaker 8: You know, this Lindsey Clancy trial, has shown America that
- 33:06Speaker 8: we don't protect our children. And I'm not talking about abortion.
- 33:11Speaker 8: Abortion's a separate issue. I know conservatives like to conflate
- 33:16Speaker 8: abortion with the Lindsay Clancy trial. The clear designated line
- 33:22Speaker 8: is when children are born. You know, the same defense
- 33:29Speaker 8: attorney that's represented Lindsay Clancy's is also representing a young
- 33:37Speaker 8: woman that has allegedly, apparently, stabbed her own mother to
- 33:43Speaker 8: death in her elderly years. Our society's not protecting the
- 33:48Speaker 8: weakest amongst us these days. And I find that personally frightening.
- 33:58Speaker 8: You know, it's said that the children are future victims.
- 34:02Speaker 8: And our elders are our wisdom. And if the rest
- 34:06Speaker 8: of us aren't going to rise up to demand protection
- 34:10Speaker 8: of that, we don't even have a society anymore. Wouldn't
- 34:14Speaker 8: you agree?
- 34:15Speaker 5: I cannot disagree with anything that you just said there.
- 34:17Speaker 5: I have not followed that trial very much other than
- 34:19Speaker 5: just what I see, you know, occasional headlines or whatever.
- 34:22Speaker 5: And I was not aware— And I was not aware
- 34:24Speaker 5: of what you said about the defense attorney there. But no,
- 34:28Speaker 5: I agree.
- 34:29Speaker 4: I agree.
- 34:29Speaker 5: If you cannot protect, as you said, the most vulnerable,
- 34:33Speaker 5: go ahead.
- 34:34Speaker 8: I know time's valuable when we're talking on the phone
- 34:37Speaker 8: like this. I would like to make one additional point.
- 34:40Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 34:43Speaker 8: You know, I know a lot of people are out
- 34:46Speaker 8: here talking these days, especially on apps like TikTok. I
- 34:51Speaker 8: really think that TikTok is, is getting into the point
- 34:56Speaker 8: of danger, uh, in the way it interacts with American society. Uh,
- 35:05Speaker 8: you know, our women, especially our younger women are going
- 35:09Speaker 8: to this as a news source. None of this stuff
- 35:12Speaker 8: is verified.
- 35:13Speaker 6: Yes.
- 35:14Speaker 8: Um, it's leading to a lot of, uh, opinions that
- 35:18Speaker 8: are based upon false evidence. Uh, You know, we're doing
- 35:27Speaker 8: a lot of talk these days about an insanity defense.
- 35:32Speaker 8: You know, if a fella's got a mental problem and
- 35:36Speaker 8: he steals a car, I think we as a society
- 35:40Speaker 8: can say, you know, this guy's got issues and we're
- 35:43Speaker 8: really sorry about the stolen car, but why don't we
- 35:46Speaker 8: get him in a mental facility and help get him
- 35:49Speaker 8: turned around and maybe turn him into a taxpayer again?
- 35:52Speaker 8: But when people start losing their lives, I don't care
- 35:55Speaker 8: if you're crazy. You know, if you're killing people, your
- 36:05Speaker 8: insanity is kind of your own problem. And you need
- 36:09Speaker 8: to face criminal penalties because people are dead. You know,
- 36:15Speaker 8: it's disrespectful to the victims of these crimes.
- 36:20Speaker 12: If we don't.
- 36:21Speaker 8: As a society, level of punishment. I get that people
- 36:28Speaker 8: have mental health issues, but by the same token, when
- 36:34Speaker 8: your mental health issues lead to other people losing their
- 36:38Speaker 8: pulse and their heartbeat and their breath, I think we
- 36:43Speaker 8: as a society can draw a clear line and say,
- 36:47Speaker 8: those actions are unacceptable and you need to be imprisoned.
- 36:52Speaker 5: I cannot disagree with one thing that you said. Hey, Chris,
- 36:55Speaker 5: I am going to move on. I appreciate you calling, man.
- 36:57Speaker 5: Thanks a lot.
- 36:58Speaker 8: Thank you for your time.
- 36:59Speaker 5: Absolutely. 945, The Dave Allen Show on 580 Live brought
- 37:02Speaker 5: to you in part by Pinnacle Consultants, helping to identify
- 37:05Speaker 5: environmental concerns, asbestos, lead, mold, indoor quality issues in buildings
- 37:09Speaker 5: all across the state, providing inspections, testing, And accredited lab

- 37:16Speaker 5: your environment because what you don't know can hurt you.
- 37:19Speaker 5: All right, so quickly, and I got a lot of
- 37:21Speaker 5: text to get to. I've been telling you about all
- 37:22Speaker 5: the events coming up this weekend. The Chillin' on the
- 37:25Speaker 5: Elk Chili Cook-Off Craft Beer and Wine Festival coming up
- 37:28Speaker 5: on Saturday. Our stations will be live from there. The
- 37:31Speaker 5: organizers are actually going to join me on the show
- 37:32Speaker 5: on Friday. Rib Fest happening tomorrow through Sunday at Shawnee Park.
- 37:37Speaker 5: More on that on tomorrow's show. On Sunday, the annual
- 37:40Speaker 5: Leah's Legacy event is happening at Slack Plaza. 5K run,
- 37:45Speaker 5: two-mile walk, plus music with Josh Pantry. Our own Woody
- 37:48Speaker 5: Woods from The Beat will be there. Food trucks, you
- 37:50Speaker 5: name it, happening Sunday evening, Slack Plaza. Also at Slack Plaza,
- 37:54Speaker 5: this one on Saturday, 1-5, the second annual Picklepalooza Pickle Festival.
- 38:02Speaker 5: So I'm going to get into that on the show tomorrow.
- 38:06Speaker 5: So the next time someone whines about there's nothing to
- 38:08Speaker 5: do around here, in the words of my esteemed buddy,
- 38:13Speaker 5: Pastor Marlon Collins, miss me with that. Miss me with
- 38:17Speaker 5: that because there's so much going on here in the
- 38:19Speaker 5: Kanawha Valley. Wake up, Liam, and go out there and
- 38:23Speaker 5: check it out. 14 minutes away from 10. Let's knock
- 38:26Speaker 5: out some text. Text says, so glad to see Morrissey.
- 38:28Speaker 5: welcoming clean energy, nuclear wind, and solar. Text, Chris, a
- 38:35Speaker 5: child is still a child. Before they're born, just the
- 38:38Speaker 5: same as the moment after they're born. The only thing
- 38:40Speaker 5: that changes is the location.
- 38:42Speaker 6: Of the baby.
- 38:43Speaker 5: If you care about children, show care for all of them,
- 38:45Speaker 5: not just the ones based on their location. Text, tariffs
- 38:52Speaker 5: on Canada really going to hurt West Virginia's economy. They
- 38:56Speaker 5: are West Virginia's number one trading partner. So sad to
- 38:59Speaker 5: see this. Tech's caller really focused on women. I'm sure
- 39:04Speaker 5: younger men are also pleading insanity defense and looking at
- 39:08Speaker 5: the same feeds. And there has been insanity defense. Defense
- 39:12Speaker 5: for centuries. This is not new. Text, Ben Salango has
- 39:17Speaker 5: to run for governor. We need new leadership to move forward.
- 39:20Speaker 5: We're begging you to run. All right, Salango, I don't
- 39:23Speaker 5: know whether you're listening or not, but I'm letting you
- 39:25Speaker 5: know somebody here thinks it is time for you to
- 39:28Speaker 5: run for governor. Text us, so POTA was rejected in
- 39:32Speaker 5: Point Pleasant. What does that mean for Point Pleasant residents'
- 39:34Speaker 5: abilities for responsible drinking and appreciated American values? I don't know.
- 39:39Speaker 5: But what I do know is the forces of change
- 39:41Speaker 5: and preservation will eventually collide in Point Pleasant. If all
- 39:44Speaker 5: goes as planned, Point Pleasant may no longer be a sleepy,
- 39:47Speaker 5: two-thirds empty, not in the small town type of city.
- 39:52Speaker 5: Oddly enough, I was in Point Pleasant last night. A
- 39:56Speaker 5: friend of mine, an old radio guy I had worked
- 39:58Speaker 5: with years and years ago, passed away. I went up
- 40:00Speaker 5: there to pay my respects yesterday. And Point Pleasant was
- 40:03Speaker 5: the first town that my wife and I lived in
- 40:05Speaker 5: when we were married. And I drove by our first
- 40:08Speaker 5: apartment and took in the town. I was I'm always
- 40:11Speaker 5: early anywhere I go. It starts at five. I'm there
- 40:13Speaker 5: at four 15 wondering where everybody is. But so I
- 40:15Speaker 5: had time to drive around town. We plus it's bustling
- 40:17Speaker 5: right now. I mean, I'll tell you it is, uh,
- 40:20Speaker 5: and I know we got a lot of listeners up there.
- 40:22Speaker 5: Our signal comes in great up there. I was listening
- 40:24Speaker 5: to weekly yesterday when I was up there. Um, but
- 40:28Speaker 5: the whole POTA thing and to kind of catch people up,
- 40:31Speaker 5: you know, it's the, uh, it's the public, it does
- 40:33Speaker 5: not stand for public outdoor drinking areas. Most people think
- 40:36Speaker 5: it's a designated area where if a city opts to
- 40:39Speaker 5: do this, you can purchase it. Usually the way it's
- 40:41Speaker 5: done when it's in Charleston and other cities is you
- 40:44Speaker 5: can purchase a cup and participating businesses, you can go
- 40:47Speaker 5: in and you can pay for a drink in that cup.
- 40:49Speaker 5: And you can be, you can drink if you wish
- 40:51Speaker 5: to on the street, but you can't have an open
- 40:53Speaker 5: container of, you know, Bud Light or whatever. It's got
- 40:55Speaker 5: to be, you know, in, in the cup. And it's
- 40:58Speaker 5: been done in Charleston in certain areas, but done in
- 41:00Speaker 5: other areas. I can tell you, I mean, in the
- 41:04Speaker 5: cities I've talked to on this show, there's been zero issues,
- 41:08Speaker 5: none whatsoever, zero zilch. Now, it was discussed, as I understand,
- 41:12Speaker 5: at Point Pleasant City Council last night. I just heard
- 41:15Speaker 5: about it on the news. I wasn't there. The Point
- 41:17Speaker 5: Pleasant City Council voted against it, not to allow it.
- 41:20Speaker 5: And that's their right. I mean, that's their right. That's
- 41:22Speaker 5: why they're elected. And obviously, they heard from their consensual
- 41:24Speaker 5: and didn't want it. So, So be it. But as
- 41:26Speaker 5: far as I will take issue with it being a
- 41:28Speaker 5: two-thirds empty town, it is not. I mean, I drove by.
- 41:32Speaker 5: I did not drive by the Mothman statue. I drove
- 41:34Speaker 5: down the main drag there and just kind of glanced.
- 41:37Speaker 5: And 5, 36 o'clock after 8, there were about 30
- 41:40Speaker 5: people standing around a Mothman statue. And there's numerous restaurants
- 41:44Speaker 5: and so on and so forth. But I do appreciate it.
- 41:46Speaker 5: I always love Point Pleasant. Text the booing to the governor.
- 41:49Speaker 5: It may have been loud boos or it may have
- 41:51Speaker 5: been quiet boos. Regardless, it was boos. If Steve Williams
- 41:54Speaker 5: were governor, he wouldn't have been booed. He would have
- 41:56Speaker 5: been in touch enough to wear white on a special occasion. Text,
- 42:01Speaker 5: I saw that upside down billboard in Jefferson on a
- 42:03Speaker 5: social media picture of a huge plume of black smoke.
- 42:06Speaker 5: The upside down billboard was in the background. My wife said,
- 42:08Speaker 5: I hope that wasn't intentional. No, that's one of those
- 42:11Speaker 5: kind of things. I saw the picture you're referring to
- 42:13Speaker 5: as well. Someone sent it to me. There was, I'm told,
- 42:18Speaker 5: some sort of a controlled fire going on. It was
- 42:20Speaker 5: nowhere near the The picture made it look like it
- 42:23Speaker 5: was a little closer than it was to the upside-down 98.7
- 42:26Speaker 5: amount in Wild and Wonderful Classic Rock Billboard. Appreciate the text.
- 42:31Speaker 5: Let me see. Great to hear the jackal on the radio. Yeah,
- 42:34Speaker 5: that's kind of the alter ego of Chris, our previous caller.
- 42:38Speaker 5: Text Florida guy Dave, the social media comment is dead on.
- 42:42Speaker 5: It's the ruin of mankind. I call it an electronic pacifier,
- 42:46Speaker 5: and boy, is this true. The Dave Allen Show on

- 45:21Speaker 5: Guarantee Bank Hotline 304-345-5858. Tony Vitale, text 304-935-500. Text says,
- 45:28Speaker 5: one thing about the Clancy trial that I want to
- 45:30Speaker 5: know why weren't two of those female jurors not dismissed
- 45:33Speaker 5: and replaced by alternates because they walked into court wearing
- 45:36Speaker 5: pink shirts, which is what the evil Code Pink Clancy
- 45:39Speaker 5: supporters were wearing in the trial. outside the courthouse. How
- 45:42Speaker 5: did they know to wear those on the same day
- 45:44Speaker 5: that they were wearing them outside? They weren't supposed to
- 45:47Speaker 5: be following any part of the trial, including the supporters
- 45:49Speaker 5: and protesters outside. Honestly, I cannot speak to anything regarding
- 45:57Speaker 5: the Clancy trial, other than what just the headlines that
- 46:00Speaker 5: I read, and that's in reputable news sources, whatever, television, whatever,
- 46:06Speaker 5: because I do not follow one bit of it. And
- 46:08Speaker 5: I'm not trying to dismiss it. I'm just saying it
- 46:10Speaker 5: just It just didn't interest me. I've never been one
- 46:14Speaker 5: that got into celebrity trials, even the O.J. trial.
- 46:18Speaker 2: I mean, it.
- 46:21Speaker 5: It was impossible to escape because it was in a
- 46:24Speaker 5: time the O.J. trial was in a time when there
- 46:26Speaker 5: wasn't social media and everyone was watching cable and television,
- 46:31Speaker 5: you know, back.
- 46:31Speaker 2: In the mid 1990s.
- 46:33Speaker 5: There weren't streaming and so on and so forth, at
- 46:35Speaker 5: least not the way we know it now. So I
- 46:38Speaker 5: didn't even follow that. It just never– I mean, these
- 46:41Speaker 5: celebrity trials or these well-known trials, normally I see people
- 46:45Speaker 5: talking about them, and everybody likes what they like. It
- 46:48Speaker 5: just never interested me in the least. I'm sure people
- 46:51Speaker 5: don't understand my obsession with sports either. But when I
- 46:55Speaker 5: get texts or I see comments, I was like, I
- 46:57Speaker 5: don't know because I've not followed one. One iota of
- 47:01Speaker 5: the trial. I'm just telling you. Coming up later today,
- 47:03Speaker 5: Metro News Midday 13 News. And tonight, live anchor Amanda

- 47:28Speaker 5: some of the winners tonight. uh today and make them
- 47:31Speaker 5: all wonderful west virginians should be interesting uh state treasurer
- 47:35Speaker 5: larry pack is going to join us on the show
- 47:37Speaker 5: today jeff jenkins has the news tj meadows back from
- 47:39Speaker 5: a mini vacation uh he is going to be here
- 47:42Speaker 5: he asserts that if anyone's going to challenge governor morrissey
- 47:46Speaker 5: for governor when he's up for re-election in 2028 it's
- 47:48Speaker 5: got to be jim we'll talk to him about that
- 47:51Speaker 5: plus another edition of metro news high school game nights
- 47:54Speaker 5: coming up tonight fred dave joe and the crew uncle
- 47:56Speaker 5: fred is going to join us to talk about that
- 47:58Speaker 5: plus I'm going to tell you about a story from
- 48:02Speaker 5: social media that you are probably not going to believe.
- 48:08Speaker 5: But it's going to go to further illustrate how out
- 48:12Speaker 5: of whack social media has made our lives on a
- 48:16Speaker 5: regular basis. It is a bizarre story. I'm just getting
- 48:19Speaker 5: into it now. And I'm going to discuss it a
- 48:22Speaker 5: little bit on the show today. Plus, we'll get to
- 48:23Speaker 5: your calls and texts, too, on Open Line West Virginia.
- 48:26Speaker 5: Metro News Midday with 13 News and Tonight Live Anchorman
- 48:28Speaker 5: DeBaron and me coming up at noon today, brought to
- 48:30Speaker 5: you by Selangor Law. On this show tomorrow, continue to
- 48:32Speaker 5: count down what's going to be the busiest weekend in
- 48:34Speaker 5: a long time here in the Kanawha Valley. Tomorrow, we'll
- 48:37Speaker 5: talk ribs and pickles. Rib Fest kicks off tomorrow at
- 48:40Speaker 5: Shawnee Park, runs through the weekend. Also, Saturday, Picklepalooza is
- 48:45Speaker 5: happening down on Slack Plaza in Charleston. I'm tired already,
- 48:49Speaker 5: and plus, I'm going to be on the air 98.7
- 48:52Speaker 5: Mountain Sunday between noon and 7. Really quick here, Jack
- 48:56Speaker 5: Carlson has a story posted, wvmetronews.com. Ja'Kai Harrison was sentenced
- 49:01Speaker 5: yesterday by Judge Tara Salango. He's the guy who was
- 49:03Speaker 5: firing shots outside Lately Field back in May during a
- 49:07Speaker 5: track meet. He got five years in prison. Now, he
- 49:10Speaker 5: says he was being followed along Piedmont Road and opened fire.
- 49:13Speaker 5: He did apologize for his actions. Very remorseful, as Jack
- 49:16Speaker 5: points out in his story. You can read the story, wvmetronews.com.
- 49:20Speaker 5: This was a story, tragic as it was, but was
- 49:24Speaker 5: made much, much worse by social media because by the
- 49:28Speaker 5: time it was all said and done, there were mass
- 49:30Speaker 5: casualties and so on and so forth. I'm not trying
- 49:32Speaker 5: to make light of it at all, but as usual,
- 49:36Speaker 5: You had some people on social media making the reports
- 49:39Speaker 5: and made the event 10 times worse than what they were.
- 49:43Speaker 5: Reject story, WVMetroNews.com. Text, TikTok is the scourge of society,
- 49:49Speaker 5: but not as bad as those radio, TV, and newspaper
- 49:51Speaker 5: social medias. All those brainiacs doing all that writing and
- 49:54Speaker 5: talking about government and stuff. Radical liberal elites, a lot
- 49:57Speaker 5: of them. Y'all need church and to lock up the crazies,
- 50:01Speaker 5: says a texter. Text, my bad, Dave. Point Pleasant is
- 50:05Speaker 5: two-thirds empty. It's one-third empty. Their largest population is over 6,000 people.
- 50:10Speaker 5: Now they're a little over 4,000 people.
- 50:11Speaker 8: Apologies.
- 50:12Speaker 5: Well, they're still doing a heck of a lot better
- 50:13Speaker 5: than a lot of cities are right now, I can
- 50:15Speaker 5: tell you. They're doing a whole lot better. Text, Dave,
- 50:18Speaker 5: the reason the trial was so important to follow is
- 50:20Speaker 5: the fact that it was not just about her mental state.
- 50:23Speaker 5: She knew what she was doing. The psychiatrist that was
- 50:25Speaker 5: on the stand said that if you do not hear
- 50:28Speaker 5: a voice, I'm telling you to do something, then you
- 50:31Speaker 5: do it, then it stops. How do you suffer postpartum
- 50:34Speaker 5: psychosis for a total of maybe four to five years
- 50:37Speaker 5: for children range from eight months to five years of age?
- 50:40Speaker 1: T.J.
- 50:40Speaker 5: Meadows, back from his mini vacation, joins us this morning.
- 50:43Speaker 5: How you doing, my friend? All rested, tan, ready to go?
- 50:46Speaker 5: I don't know about that.
- 50:47Speaker 18: You know, one thing I did think was interesting about Clancy,
- 50:49Speaker 18: I haven't followed it much either, but in the state
- 50:50Speaker 18: of Massachusetts, it's my understanding that if you declare yourself
- 50:54Speaker 18: mentally ill, the burden is on the state to prove
- 50:56Speaker 18: that you are not, rather than the burden on you
- 50:58Speaker 18: to prove that you are.
- 50:59Speaker 5: I thought that was interesting.
- 51:00Speaker 8: Okay.
- 51:01Speaker 1: Now, you are one of the people.
- 51:03Speaker 5: That saw the famed 98.7 The Mountain billboard yesterday. Tell
- 51:07Speaker 5: me about that.
- 51:08Speaker 18: So I had business in South Charleston. I thought, you know,
- 51:10Speaker 18: it's been a while since I took the old way.
- 51:12Speaker 18: McCorkle Avenue. I'll just go to the valley that way.
- 51:15Speaker 1: I go by. I see a billboard.
- 51:17Speaker 18: Animals upside down. I'm like, what is going on with that?
- 51:21Speaker 18: I'm like, man, somebody really screwed up.
- 51:22Speaker 2: No.
- 51:23Speaker 6: No.
- 51:24Speaker 1: No, not so much.
- 51:25Speaker 5: No, okay. Go watch the video, 98.7 The Mountain, Wild
- 51:29Speaker 5: and Wonderful Classic, right?
- 51:30Speaker 18: 98.7 The Mountain on Facebook. What you got on the
- 51:32Speaker 18: show today? So coming up on the show today, Wilson
- 51:34Speaker 18: and I get in. We're going to continue to talk
