Sven on the Road #2 – Falcon Bowl and Jeremy Prach’s 50th Birthday · Full Spectrum Cycling

• 0:00
[background chatter] Hey, everybody. It's Sven. Doing another On the Road with Sven. We've got a couple places to stop at tonight.
• 0:14
Oddly enough, today's episode is starting at the same place or very near where the last one left off, Amorphic Beer.
• 0:23
Coincidentally, right next to the new spot for the shop, so I think it's apropos that we start our venture here.
• 0:32
We're gonna be stopping over at Jeremy Proch's 50th birthday party, Jeremy of Flat Out Friday and Riverwest 24 fame. I expect it's gonna be off the hook, but who knows? Tony and Daniel are gonna be there.
• 0:46
There'll be a lot of folks over there, I guarantee, and we're certainly gonna do some sort of Johnny-on-the-spot, man-on-the-street, dude-on-the-corner, guy with his dick in his hand...
• 0:57
I don't know, something like that sort of a deal. So, just gonna pick up something to roll over there on. Uh,
• 1:05
didn't really think this very well through since I don't have a key to this building yet even, but I'm pretty sure I can break a bike out of the, uh, bike corral in the new spot and roll over that way.
• 1:17
And we'll talk to you probably in about, uh, an hour and a half, and hope that the pre-gaming didn't get to the point where we're, uh, you know, JK hammered yet. But who knows?
• 1:30
It's a Saturday, it's Milwaukee, and pretty sure it's gonna be awesome. Welcome back. Welcome back. Welcome back. So I haven't really ventured very far since the last report.
• 1:45
I did go into the new to be shop area, and had to pick out a ride, and everything's kinda packed in there because we need to do some build out and painting and such, and had to get out of the other space pretty quickly.
• 2:00
So it's not very conducive to getting bikes out, but the first thing that struck my eye was the Ralph. This is, uh, about a 1995 Teasdale built Ralph bike.
• 2:12
I took some pictures of it, so if you go to the website fullspectrumcycling.com, pretty sure you'll see pictures of said bike. It just... This is a, a crazy build. It's got a Nexus rear hub.
• 2:25
It's got old TriAlign Avid brakes. It's got thick slicks on it. It's just sort of a hodgepodge homage of bicycle goodness, and
• 2:37
this one actually has participated in Riverwest 24, and tonight we're going to Jeremy Proch's 50th birthday party. The,
• 2:45
the brains behind the 24, not that there's not a thousand other people that help out, but Jeremy is the man that originally got this thing going some 20 plus years ago as a way for the
• 2:57
community of Riverwest to come together and have a night of fun and riding and partying.
• 3:03
And by cracky, if you come to Wisconsin and put your feet down in Milwaukee, if you don't do this thing on the last weekend in July, you're kinda missing out, 'cause this is one of the best things that I've been to in the entire United State 'Murica.
• 3:20
So we're gonna do a little roll around the neighborhood before we head over there. Got about, you know, couple of... 20, 50, 70 minutes till it's time to get to Jeremy's place.
• 3:29
But it's a beautiful night in Milwaukee, 72 degrees. I'm, I'm looking at, uh, Dry's Painting and Restoration's kickass manlift with the cross. All right, we'll check in later, but thanks very much.
• 3:47
Uh, you'll see what's happening. It's gonna be a, it's gonna be a thing. Hey, everybody. It's Sven. I- we're On the Road with Sven. We're down at the bowling alley at Falcon Bowl.
• 3:58
I don't know if, uh, you folks have ever been to the place, but we've got one, two, three, four, five, six lanes down here, and, uh, I've got the Aussie Julian to give us a little history of Falcon Bowl and what has recently happened to it, except that he's now talking to some other guy.
• 4:15
So we'll, uh, do a little bit of, um, standing around and listening to balls clack around and whatnot. All right, Julian. Yeah, yeah, that's what I hear. So, so you- Sure... you were gonna ex... Oh, Sven, Julian.
• 4:27
Julian, Sven. And? Sure, yes. Warlock. Warlock is waiting for- Or V, V... a team of people to come down here and bowl. We're in the basement of Falcon. So this was... There's a lot going on in this place. Yes.
• 4:41
G- give us a little bit of a history of what's gone on and- Sure... why this has be- become something that is actually cool again when it was so- Yeah... close to being extinct.
• 4:50
So one of the weird sort of, uh, journeys that this, uh, institution has been through is that, um, it started off as a, um, um, as an ethnic place, uh, for Polish immigrants to come, uh, here to find community.
• 5:06
Um, and, uh, because of, as I'm sure you're aware, the lovely balmy Milwaukee weather, which is just winter 11 months out of the year, um- Cut it out [laughs] It's beautiful out today. So- It's like 72. It's great...
• 5:20
so, so Wisconsin did this great thing of in bringing across, not inventing, but bringing across this thing called bowling. So we think it's from Germany. That's a loose understanding.
• 5:33
Like, could be, but that regional area, Poland, Slovenia, that sort of central. Um, and because of the winters, um, everybody wanted something to do indoors, and so we thought, "Why not?"
• 5:47
Do this thing where we have a ball and we have- Right, right... something to throw the ball at. Yeah. Because it's sort of like baseball, but it's not. So this is, uh... So here's all the interesting bragging points.
• 5:59
We are the, uh, fourth oldest bowling alley in the United States. Do you know the first is also in- Is, is it-... Milwaukee... is, is the- Holler House. Is, oh, oh- It's the oldest sanctioned bowling alley- Correct...
• 6:12
right over on- Correct... uh, Lincoln Avenue or wherever. So Wisconsin has the number one- Yeah... and number f- four oldest, so- We're definitely suckers for bowling in Wisconsin, for sure.
• 6:22
But I mean, it, it, it does make sense, you know, it, the climate, um, and the demographic which was here. So the building's from 1890. Um, the lanes are original, uh, from 1915.
• 6:35
The machines were the first automated, uh, non... Because what we used to have, uh, obviously in the old days- Pin setters... is, is, is pin setters. Which they still have at Holler House- Yeah, yeah... which is so cool.
• 6:46
Which, I mean, is, is great. They call them monkeys, apparently. And if, if they're not getting paid $50 an hour then- Yeah, they're, they're-...
• 6:53
then, then that, that's a- They're losing their brains by- [laughs] Yeah... pins hitting them in the heads and whatnot. Yeah, because the first 40 times it's fun, and it goes downhill pretty quickly after that.
• 7:02
Absolutely. Um, so yeah, so the machines are all from, I think, '56.
• 7:06
All the decor down here is from '52, and one of the things which, um, I always try and point out to people is that because the '50s stylistically- Right... you think of, like, the big caddies and stuff like that.
• 7:19
Absolutely. So the ball holders actually look like the rear- It's like a taillight right on the thing. Yes. Yeah, and like a big- Absolutely... like a big... Where I come from it's called a yank tank.
• 7:29
So those big convertible- And to be- Just, just stupidly long... to be fair, let's tell people where you are from.
• 7:35
So- And, uh, only because we're using an instrument called a RØDE GO II microphone, which is from Australia. Which, which w- are, are all the best things. [laughs] And I, I'm pointing to myself now.
• 7:46
Yes, he's pointing at his face. Um, so I, I- We may have to take a photo of his visage at some point. So whi- which or, or, or, or several photos of- Yes...
• 7:55
um, so just- From the undercarriage all the way up to the- [laughs]... the, the, the- No, we-... top, the top of the hair. We c- well, uh, uh, we can, we can choose certain bits.
• 8:02
[laughs] It's a Well, you, you wanna have all you can draw from just in case. [laughs] We want, we- The- We wanna have some backup. So these, the, the seats are also- Yeah... do they seem...
• 8:12
Those are '50s era, don't they? Yeah. Yeah, so, uh, um, everything from the, the ball returns to these beautiful, um, retro is the word I'm gonna use every sentence and just- That's such an awesome term...
• 8:23
and just, just pepper that in. Um- Those aren't retro pencils, though. Those are number twos. Um, al- al- although our, our...
• 8:30
Honestly, our favorite feature here, which everybody loves more than the bowling, is the pencil sharpener. We actually have... And, and we have pencils unsharpened. Oh, yeah. Unsharpened pencils over here.
• 8:39
So you can sharpen your own. Which- Again, photo opportunity is, is- A- a- again, is, is an opinion, but maybe better than the bowling. Have you ever fully sharpened a pencil? I have- It's-... I have two in my basement.
• 8:50
[laughs] They're not, uh, they're not electric like that, but they're old school like when you were a kid, and I just love 'em, and I'm like... [imitates pencil sharpener] They're so great. It, it, it, it, it...
• 9:00
E- everybody's gonna be laughing right now, and I just wanna say to everybody, um, don't because it's one of these...
• 9:06
And, and I'm gonna use the cliche, unless you've tried it, you don't know what you're missing because the, the, the- All right. Let's go over and sharpen a pencil- [laughs]...
• 9:14
just because the audio of the pencil sharpening will be- Is... I- I- I am removing- Even the audio is- These are... These gotta be Ticonderogas or what do we have? No. Oh.
• 9:26
I, obviously, you know, like, like an A- Paper Mate... A or a- Ticonderoga was your kind of old school when you were taking that test and you had to have the number two pencil.
• 9:34
Yeah, there's learning something new every day. All right. So here we go. It's gonna sound like this. [pencil sharpener whirring] Oh, my God. That's just like butter. You know, there's no- It does a really nice job...
• 9:46
pencil sharpener quite that deep- It's a Panasonic pencil sharpener... which is very good. Oh, yeah. This is gonna be used to score. Don't go beyond the lines because we, we oil the blades.
• 9:55
I'd, I'd like to say that this particular pencil- So I mean-... is going to, uh, write down a 300 score for someone. And even if I have to do it fakey fake, this particular pencil is going to score a 300 game.
• 10:09
Um, how do we turn the lights on? All right. So yeah. Yeah, so Yeah, okay. I'm gonna take some photos 'cause, uh, Julian's talking to Warlock about, uh, some stuff, but this is just, this is classic, folks.
• 10:21
If you get to Milwaukee, and quite frankly you should, you should come here. And this is, like, right in the middle of the Riverwest 24 race course, and I would be very surprised if it weren't open during said 24.
• 10:38
Oh, and as a nod to, uh, uh, I think Reverend Horton Heat, I got a Galaxy 300 ball. It's not a Galaxy 500, but it's a Galaxy 300 right here.
• 10:52
Getting down low, making a photo of the Galaxy 300. I got a Galaxy 300. Sorry, the Rev's not here, but that is a Galaxy 300 ball. Thank you very much. Julian, where'd you go? The fuck?
• 11:10
I, I understand if- Julian, what am I, some kind of... [laughs] No. All right. Let's go, let's go hang out with Warlock back here too. So, um, so, so this is the machine which, um- Ah, this is shiz-... this is the one...
• 11:24
the shiznizzle right here. Well, okay. So- This is how they actually-... the lanes start-... uh, meter the lanes... number one is the far end. Right, and six is this end. And there's a- Six is this end. Okay.
• 11:33
So whatever lane you want- Gotta be a Nashville caster... just put it over here... 'cause who made something cool as this? But here we go. Let's do that. Photograph of- Oh, wait. Which is it called? Warlock. I see.
• 11:42
Five, six. Actually, I'll, I'll just turn them on. Yeah, man. Turn on five. Okay. I'll, I'll... They're all on, so number one is out. Um, we're going- They're going to have some bowling down here.
• 11:51
This is Jeremy Proch's birthday party, right? So two- He's the guy that started the Riverwest 24, and even though thousands of people have made it happen since then, he's the man. So we are
• 12:03
at this venue for his 50th birthday party, and I just, I can't believe how awesome this place is. Everybody should be here doing the everything that everybody does at these kind of places.
• 12:18
We'll have to do a little, uh, photo op. Pretty sure later on there's gonna be way more people, but you gotta see these, uh, 1950s era bowling alley accoutrement. And yeah, this is just...
• 12:34
Uh, uh, so this place was also, uh, gymnastics.
• 12:39
Polish, uh, immigrants and their families were very into gymnastics, and much like Turner Hall, which is one of our best music venues in the area still, um, these were places where people did gymnastics and had clubs, and they competed against other, uh, local gymnastics teams who had a place like this to practice.
• 13:01
So yeah, I guess we'll wrap up with Julian in a little bit, but, um, 10-4-1-9, over. Hey, everybody. Spud on the Street here at, uh, Jeremy Proch's 50th birthday party.
• 13:15
We corralled Corey Baumann, uh, Tony Berger, Molly Berger. She's my Matthias. Matthias- [laughs]... Berger thingy thing. Just straight Matthias. Hi, Molly. How's it going? It's good. Tony? I'm all right. And Corey.
• 13:29
I'm doing well. Excellent. We were just chatting the other minute, two or five ago, about perhaps having you on the show to do a little Riverwest 24 pregame. Probably second week in July-ish. Yeah, yeah.
• 13:43
Somewhere around there. I'd love to be part of it. Uh, last year I came on just to kind of go through some of the ideas that we're going through for this year's
• 13:52
24, uh, some of the bonuses that are coming up, and just kind of promote the event in general and talk about the neighborhood and all the great things that are happening, and really looking forward to coming back on.
• 14:02
Absolutely. Have you met... You know Julian from here at the Falcon Bowl. Uh, I believe we've probably met.
• 14:08
And so we, we made note of the fact that the, the Gizmotron we're talking into is made in Australia, and he's also made in Australia. So he, he's just such a, a font of knowledge of this beautiful place.
• 14:19
This, I know it's been here since 1890. This is a, a, a- Second longest sanctioned bowling alley in the world... fourth, I believe. Fourth? Okay. But still, uh, it's been a- Top 10, maybe. Top 10... a good one.
• 14:29
So one of the things that he just relayed to me that it was not on his earlier, uh, talky chatty thing into the microphony deal was that as much as this was kind of a community gathering place, they had, like gymnastics, and they eventually had the bowling alley, this place was really here to sell mortgages to
• 14:51
Polish people that came into the neighborhood. It was like a, sort of a- Interesting... sales pitch to get people to do their mortgage- Come live... yeah. And it wasn't nefarious.
• 15:02
It wasn't like a Donald Trump fucking bullshit mortgage bullshit thing- [laughs]... or whatever.
• 15:05
But it was a, it was a good thing that you could, uh, borrow money, buy a place, uh, in this area of town, which is quite Polish now, although it was originally very German, I believe, here.
• 15:17
But anyway, I thought that was a very... I never heard that one before from this place because, uh, there's so many stories about this joint. Oh. Look, the Zons are here. Shit. There's more Zon- The Zon guys...
• 15:26
there's Zon people. Beautiful podcaster. Andrew Zon. I had to tell Andrew that we can't work on his bike 'cause we're moving. I feel bad about that. It's okay.
• 15:34
We're, we're doing a- But Andrew, Andrew- We're doing a Jackass on the Street thing here. That would be me- Andrew, you're Jackass... the Jackass, and you guys are all the, the talent. But, uh, hey.
• 15:41
No, I, I- How's it going?... I, I made the brakes less soft, uh, so that I can do the UPath ride. Uh, it'll be fine. Awesome. You know.
• 15:49
So they're not like, uh, you know, super soft brakes, like Letterkenny super soft or- Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, no, they're not 10-ply. Super soft brakes. They're, they're, they're now, like, institutional, right?
• 16:01
They- How many miles are you doing on the UPath? Uh- From 12 to 20... that, that is, that is tom- Are you crossing the Hoan? Wait a second.
• 16:09
To me, that's the only reason that I- Yeah, that's the- That's kind of the only reason I would- We can't even do internet time here like normal... do the Hoan, is if they opened it right back up.
• 16:13
I know nothing about U- UPath- It, it is June 4th... other than that they have a huge- Arts... marketing budget. We have arts. Is it tomorrow? It's tomorrow. Yeah, it's tomorrow. Oh, holy shit. Is today tomorrow?
• 16:23
[laughs] No, well, internet- Tomorrow's today. Internet time, it's like four days ago, so yeah. No, so what they do is they close off the Hoan Bridge, which is our bridge across- Nowhere...
• 16:33
the, well, the bridge to nowhere. That gets to Potawatomi behind it. But you can actually ride over the bridge, over the harbor, to the south side of town- Is that-... on your bicycle...
• 16:42
I've never done that and very- Did you have to register preempt to do that, or is it open to just anybody? I don't think- How would they know?... you could pull it off, but I bet you could just ride.
• 16:50
How would they know? Ride dirty. Have you never bandited a ride in your life? Ride naked. Okay, Mr. George Plimpton, can you explain how you would maybe go- I'm a rule follower... across the bridge? Thank you.
• 16:59
I love rules. [laughs] Maybe you should get out, maybe you should get out the, uh- Just grease yourself up and they're not gonna be able to catch you... maybe you should get out the beer wagon, the w- Pedal Tavern.
• 17:07
Ride that fucker over. Oh. Pedal Tavern's done it. That'd only take, like, 20 years. If there wasn't electric- Pedal Tavern has ridden the, uh, Hoan Bridge as part of, I don't- A marketing stunt... was it,
• 17:17
was it a Euchre Ride for the Art? Something along those lines, uh, did take it up and over the Hoan Bridge. Wow. Yeah. Wait, electric powered or no?
• 17:24
I was not the one who was driving that day, but it definitely has happened. Was it being towed? No. [laughs] Wow. It's, it's a good climb.
• 17:32
It's- It's a must do for men and women- Not quite 200- It's about, what, two and a half miles over to get to the other- Yeah, and it's probably- It's only like just a push... 200 feet elevation. That's it.
• 17:41
It's not like it's huge, but- Right... it, it, it's the biggest hill in Milwaukee, I'll tell you that much. It's high torque. This is not my first drink and it's not- Not the steepest hill.
• 17:48
I've only done it once, and it was pretty easy. I would say the steepest hill might be going up Highland That isn't- From- Yeah... from, like, 2nd or whatever that is, 6th to 10th, whatever that is That's a steep one.
• 17:59
That one from Water to up Juneau to, like, Milwaukee Street's pretty steep, too. Also, uh, if you're in- But it's quick. It's a quick 30... if you're in Wauwatosa, State to 73rd from- Right... up that, like, St.
• 18:11
Charles, that's pretty steep. Yeah. I like that. They used to run the, uh, toad races up there or the Super 8 races. Or in the Highlands, Revere from Lloyd to Hillcrest. I used to...
• 18:22
I, I thought I was gonna be a BMX racer, and I used to train by sprinting up that hill on my BMX bike and then turn around and coast down it and sprint up it again, and I would do that until I could no longer, like, breathe.
• 18:35
[laughs] And how'd that work for the career? Um, I never got the chance to BMX race 'cause everything was in Rockford, Illinois, and I didn't have a driver's license, and by the time I did, uh, my uh- Friday...
• 18:48
I don't know, my drive was done. I don't know why Rockford had such a big, big thing. Elkhart, Wisconsin, too, had the indoor one. Elkhart was a- Yeah... was a big B- Big indoor... actually, I think it was Elkhart.
• 18:57
Indoor one, but Rockford had a- Elkhart and Rockford both had big, big BMX- They had a beautiful... Rockford had a beautiful indoor one... BMX scenes. Absolutely. All right. Well, Corey, thanks. Uh- Hey...
• 19:07
probably second week in July we'll learn a little bit more about what's going on at the 24. Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. It's kind of hush-hush now. We can't really reveal it now.
• 19:13
It's kind of like the WWDC coming up on Monday for Apple Computer. Yeah. Can't really re- reveal it now, but, uh, blah, blah, blah. Yeah. Well, you provide the, uh, morphic, and I'll provide the facts.
• 19:24
We're gonna provide a morphic, and wait till you see- I'm, I'm excited... the shiznizzle we got upstairs at that place. Yeah, I'm looking forward to- It's gonna be awesome... I'm looking forward to the new studio.
• 19:32
All right. We, uh- Molly, Andrew. Amber. This is- Amber. Amber. Amber's on, Tony Burger, and, uh, Tim Burke. Sven. Sven, who's a good dancer. Fox Sven. What a, what a... Sven's a good dancer.
• 19:44
Sven's better than Greg, I'll tell you that much. You're a good dancer. Thank you, Molly. All right, we're gonna do a, a quick- Another lap. I know, I know. I'm like... [laughs] Everybody spin out here.
• 19:53
Still at, uh, Jeremy Proch's 50th birthday party. [laughs] I know we just had Corey Bauman on who's super awesome, but now we've actually corralled the man himself, Jeremy Proch, 50 years old. What the hell? 1973.
• 20:04
Must have been a good year. Are you 70? Were you born in '73 also? '63, my man. Oh, you look great. I will be 60 in about six weeks. I would have no idea. I- You look really good. Good work. I'm being serious.
• 20:14
Well, no, you look good, too, for an- 50... an old man, obviously. [laughs] No, how's it going? I mean, this is a hell of a thing. Um- Well, again, I, I, I'll say this on the mic.
• 20:23
Uh, uh, this isn't about the vanity of having my birthday. It's... I used my birthday to have a party that I thought the Ri- the Riverwest neighborhood needed. Absolutely. Um, I love Riverwest.
• 20:32
I, uh, want to invest in the relationships that I have, so instead of buying myself a new car or a young girlfriend, I bought a polka band. These guys are great. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 20:43
Uh, it's a little bit loud 'cause I think they're all kind of elderly and maybe they don't know how loud they are. [laughs] And we also have sex scenes coming up very, very, very soon. Yeah, right after this set. Yes.
• 20:55
So- Well, you wanna talk about loud. [laughs] Well, no, I love loud, if in appropriate circumstances. Got it. Uh, so we're gonna have, uh, Corey on in a couple weeks for the Riverwest 24 thing. Mm-hmm. What do you, uh...
• 21:07
You've been doing it for an awful long time, since you started it, obviously, kind of.
• 21:11
I'm not saying you are the sole starter, and I have given props on this show to how many thousands of people over the last 20-plus years have actually contributed in making it- Sure, for sure...
• 21:21
one of the greatest, one of the greatest things in the country, I swear to God. Yeah. Totally agree.
• 21:25
You go anywhere in the wo- Well, I haven't been very far in the world, but in this country, this is one of the greatest things somebody could do. So I know the...
• 21:34
Just maybe relate over the last time in 30 seconds how great it is. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. I appre- well, I appreciate... So you want me to, you want me to tell you- 30 seconds. Yeah... about how great Riverwest 24 is?
• 21:45
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Go ahead. Uh, well, just real quick, I wanna clarify. If, uh, if the history was written, um...
• 21:50
I, I, again, I was a founder with a, with a group of other people w- that the philosophy was created out of, but I think my role early on was the... I was, I w- I had sold it to the neighborhood.
• 22:00
I was the, the, the, the firecracker that, that- Yeah... kind of kept the... Sold it to the church, sold it to the Riverwest Neighborhood Association, got the neighborhood to rally behind it.
• 22:11
And boy howdy, do they rally now. I mean, this is... So I was in, I think, the second or third year, and it was already a pretty decent thing then. It was already pretty well bought into by the neighborhood.
• 22:22
Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was a community building thing. It's not a bike race. It's a thing to get people out and go for 24 hours- Sure...
• 22:29
and make the community something that would not have been possible if it weren't for something to rally around, like a bunch of bicycles riding around a four-mile course, blah, blah, blah.
• 22:38
