- 0:01Melinda Lee: Welcome to a Speak In Flow Podcast episode, I am
- 0:05thrilled you're here, because this topic is near and dear to
- 0:09my heart, mastering and being successful at flow. Now what is
- 0:15flow anyways, flow is when your potential is skyrocketing,
- 0:21because you're so immersed in the present moment, there's no
- 0:24inner critic, there's no doubt they're gone. And you're just
- 0:29focused, you're here in the moment you're doing or whatever
- 0:32it is that you're doing, whether you're playing an instrument, or
- 0:35you are an athlete out on the court, throwing a basketball or
- 0:38whether you're a speaker, you are focused on the moment,
- 0:42there's nothing blocking you and you're immersed in the
- 0:45situation, your hand gestures, your body language, your words,
- 0:48naturally flow out, everything's in flow your movements. And
- 0:54that's when the opportunities come to you. That's when success
- 0:57comes to you. And, and abundance prosperity. And, and there's
- 1:02three phases, there's no way around it, to get into flow. And
- 1:06that's what I'm going to talk about today. And the three
- 1:09phases are awkward, release, and then flow. Awkward is that the
- 1:17struggle, it's, it's that moment, when we don't know what
- 1:21we're doing, we're so overwhelmed, everything is new,
- 1:24brand new, then you move into release releases, when you may
- 1:29know the steps, you may know the process of whatever it is that
- 1:32you're doing. But you're still thinking about it, you're still
- 1:34wondering whether you can do it or not. And then finally, flow,
- 1:39you're in the mastery, you're in success, you know, you got this
- 1:42and it's just natural to you. So we want to speed up your process
- 1:47to get from awkward to flow. By understanding these three
- 1:52phases. I'm gonna break down each, the first one is awkward.
- 1:57It's that struggle, it's that place that we don't like to be
- 2:01in and we want to get out of there as soon as possible. It's
- 2:04when you're starting something new. Everything is overwhelming.
- 2:08I remember when I first started in my job, and when I was 1716
- 2:14years old, I was working at a prime rib restaurant. And in
- 2:19this restaurant, there was a lot going on, right? You have to
- 2:21talk to the people at the table, then you have to take their
- 2:24order. And then you have to go back to the ticket and give it
- 2:27the salad ready and get the mashed potatoes. And it was so
- 2:31overwhelming. To me. It was a struggle. I didn't like to talk
- 2:35to the people at first. And then I didn't know where to go. I
- 2:38didn't know where to put the ticket. I didn't know where to
- 2:40get the salad. So it was just a lot. It was awkward. I was
- 2:43uncomfortable. Right? Have you ever felt that when you have
- 2:47just started something new, and you can start to feel
- 2:51embarrassed because if you don't know what you're doing, people
- 2:54are seeing you and then you start to feel some shame. Gosh,
- 2:59so it's the same way. Same thing can happen when we're speaking,
- 3:04when we are delivering a presentation. We are feeling
- 3:08overwhelmed, because we're not certain about our what's going
- 3:11to happen. We're not certain about our performance. Now we're
- 3:14not certain about what's going to if we're going to say all the
- 3:16right bullet points. And so there's just too much, right. So
- 3:21how can we speed through this awkward face to go into the next
- 3:26phase, which is relief. You're not in flow yet, but you're in
- 3:29release. So in release, you may know what the process is. So for
- 3:34example, in my restaurant example, after about a month, I
- 3:40started to then know where to how to greet the customers, you
- 3:44know, I was starting to get more comfortable greeting them. I
- 3:46knew where to put the ticket to put in the order. I knew how to
- 3:50get the salad. But I may in your mind, forget something. I may
- 3:54think okay, did I do this right? And I'm so I'm thinking about
- 3:57what I am doing. So it's still mechanical. It's not very
- 4:02natural. You might look at someone. Have you ever seen
- 4:05someone who is on the dance floor, they're they're doing the
- 4:08right moves, but they're mechanical, they're not really
- 4:10going to the beat so they know the moves, but it doesn't look
- 4:14natural. As a speaker, you may know what you're going to say.
- 4:20But it doesn't seem natural. You may have your talking points.
- 4:25And you may have even memorised your script. But it does not
- 4:29seem natural. You seem like a robot. And that is the release
- 4:34phase. So you're starting to get to the place where you're not
- 4:37completely overwhelmed and debilitated. But at the same
- 4:41time, you're starting to release some of the fear some of the
- 4:44doubt and starting to move into more mechanical I know the steps
- 4:49I know the process but still overthinking it still not
- 4:52completely certain whether I can do it or not. And the key to
- 4:57getting out of this phase from really If releasing doubt, and
- 5:02releasing being mechanical into flow is, is repetition, and
- 5:08consistency, keeping yourself doing what you're meant to do.
- 5:14And I'm going to share with you something, it is not when it
- 5:18comes to speaking not about repeating your script, you're
- 5:23gonna start to get to a point where you are in flow with your
- 5:27words. When I was at the restaurant, I started to just
- 5:32know where to go what to do with the customers, I just, I started
- 5:36to see where to put the ticket and see everything, I started to
- 5:40see how I interacted with the other waiters, and how I
- 5:44interacted with all the different tables that I was
- 5:46supporting, and how to multitask. Right. So I was
- 5:49seeing a bigger picture how to solve problems in the moment,
- 5:52even if things were ambiguous. And so that is what flow is
- 5:56because you're not focused. And you're releasing the mechanical,
- 5:59the process the steps, you are able to move into flow, and do
- 6:04some problem solving when things are chaotic, and things are
- 6:07uncertain. And so when you are in the release phase, and still
- 6:13going through the mechanics of your talk, right? Thinking about
- 6:17what am I going to say, it's going to be difficult for you to
- 6:20move into flow. And that's what most people are stuck in. That's
- 6:24where most people, they get into the habit of writing out their
- 6:27entire script and memorising it word for word. And then, and
- 6:32then they then they think that okay, I'm gonna memorise it word
- 6:34for word, then I'll finally get into flow. The truth of the
- 6:37matter is, if you have this as a habit, you're really not in
- 6:40flow, because I want you to start trusting your words. That
- 6:45is true flow. When you can move into the place of mastering,
- 6:52I've got this, I know, even if I don't have all my script, or if
- 6:56I don't know all the words, I know my bullet points and I can
- 7:00run and go with it, I can be the moment solve problems, step into
- 7:05the ambiguity, step into the uncomfortable in this and
- 7:08embrace, not knowing, and continually continuing to do
- 7:13that over and over again. And most of us, don't give us the
- 7:17opportunity and the Yeah, the experience of trusting
- 7:22ourselves. And so we are stuck in the mechanical the release,
- 7:27still releasing trying to release the script, but we will
- 7:31never let go of it. Or many of my clients are like, I'm so
- 7:34afraid if I don't have my script, I want to blank out I
- 7:37don't know what to say. And I created so many beautiful words
- 7:41in my PowerPoint, and they're not going to come out. So when
- 7:44you are holding on to in this phase, and not finally stepping
- 7:49into flow, which does mean to step into to embracing the
- 7:54unknown, having your bullets, embracing the uncertainty,
- 7:58trusting that your words will flow out. And of course, in the
- 8:02beginning, it will be uncomfortable. Of course, in the
- 8:04beginning, you may stumble on your words, but eventually
- 8:06you're going to get to the point where I've got this, I know my
- 8:11words, I know the content, I'm the expert, and stepping into
- 8:14that place of the unknown and still trusting that you can
- 8:18problem solve at the same time. That is when you've mastered
- 8:23flow. That is when you are in the moment focused on your
- 8:30audience. Focus on connecting with the audience, inspiring
- 8:34them moving your initiatives, because you can sense what they
- 8:40want what you need. And then you problem solve, and you
- 8:44collaborate and you communicate in a way that inspires people
- 8:48and is aspirational. So those are the three steps to moving
- 8:54into flow. Yes, of course, it's going to be awkward, awkward
- 8:58that you have to let go of the script, awkward that you have to
- 9:01just trust your bullet. And it's going to seem a little bit
- 9:05mechanical, you're going to have to release some of the doubt
- 9:07that you can't do this. But as you continue to repeat and get
- 9:11some feedback, you're going to start to get to the place of
- 9:15flow. And being able to speak on the cusp without your script.
- 9:22Trusting that you can embrace uncertainty problem solve,
- 9:27because you're so focused in the moment you're so focused on your
- 9:30clients, your audience, and the connection that you have with
- 9:34them.
- 9:37And I hope that you take this process and embrace it and use
- 9:43it for your next opportunity whether it's speaking or even
- 9:47just mastering a new skill, something that you've embraced
- 9:51whether it's learning how to ride a horse, whether it's
- 9:54learning how to cook, those are the three steps to moving from
- 9:59awkward Released and into flow and success until I see you
- 10:05again I'm your sister in flow love you take care
