The Season with Peter Schrager: Chargers OC Kellen Moore · NFL explained.

0:07
Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schreger is a production of the
0:09
Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, Welcome Back
0:25
Speaker 1: to the Season with Peter Schreger, a brand new episode.
0:28
Speaker 1: As we head towards the July fourth weekend, I'm hoping
0:32
Speaker 1: that a lot of people are off the next few
0:34
Speaker 1: days and they've got long drives to see friends or
0:38
Speaker 1: long drives to visit family, and they're just gonna listen
0:41
Speaker 1: and binge this podcast. So I was debating whether we
0:44
Speaker 1: do one this week, and I'm like, you know what,
0:46
Speaker 1: I think that might be the ideal time to do
0:48
Speaker 1: a podcast heading into the holiday weekend. And we've got
0:50
Speaker 1: a great guest in Kellen Moore, who's the new offensive
0:53
Speaker 1: coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers. I've known Kellen Moore
0:57
Speaker 1: for many years as a coach, but obviously before then,
1:00
Speaker 1: he was an NFL player with the Cowboys and the Lions,
1:02
Speaker 1: and before that he was the quarterback at Boise State,
1:06
Speaker 1: where he started all his years there and is currently
1:09
Speaker 1: still still holds the record for most wins as a
1:13
Speaker 1: quarterback in college football history. Still a young guy in
1:16
Speaker 1: his early thirties and made a big move whether it
1:21
Speaker 1: was voluntary or whether it was assumed that this is
1:24
Speaker 1: what we had. He's no longer in Dallas after being
1:27
Speaker 1: in Dallas his entire coaching career, and he is now
1:29
Speaker 1: with the Los Angeles Chargers with Justin Herbert. We're going
1:32
Speaker 1: to get into a deep conversation with Kellen in a minute.
1:34
Speaker 1: I just wanted to give a quick preview of what
1:37
Speaker 1: to look for this weekend, and this is fun. Monday
1:42
Speaker 1: Night is the party of the year. I will not
1:44
Speaker 1: be invited. I've never been invited. None of my colleagues
1:47
Speaker 1: in the media have been invited. But a gentleman named
1:50
Speaker 1: Michael Rubin, who owns the company Fanatics, throws a massive
1:55
Speaker 1: banger of a party in Bridgehampton, New York, on the water,
2:00
Speaker 1: and I would alert everybody now to get ahead of
2:02
Speaker 1: it now as opposed to on Tuesday morning checking TMZ
2:07
Speaker 1: and Page six and Doumois and whatever other sites you want.
2:10
Speaker 1: But this is the party to be at, and I
2:13
Speaker 1: know several NFL owners will be in attendance. I know
2:15
Speaker 1: in other years NFL superstars have been there. I gotta
2:19
Speaker 1: think you're gonna get your Joel Embiid, your jay Z,
2:24
Speaker 1: Kevin Durant in recent years. Basically Michael has two parties
2:28
Speaker 1: a year. One of them is the super Bowl party,
2:31
Speaker 1: which I have been to and I was lucky enough
2:33
Speaker 1: to be invited to. And I was told straight up,
2:35
Speaker 1: you will never be invited to the July fourth party.
2:37
Speaker 1: But the super Bowl party is like where they let
2:40
Speaker 1: everyone in that you know at least knows Michael or
2:44
Speaker 1: works with the NFL or fanatics, and I, you know,
2:46
Speaker 1: it's still a cool party to be at, and it
2:49
Speaker 1: was amazing this year to go. I basically sat in
2:52
Speaker 1: the corner talking to Damar Hamlin, Micah Parsons, Jerry Jones,
2:58
Speaker 1: David Tepper, and you know Rich Eysen, like random, like
3:03
Speaker 1: you just pick it out of the thing. If you've
3:04
Speaker 1: seen this guy on TV. Have you seen this person's name?
3:06
Speaker 1: The headlines they're at the Michael Rubin super Bowl Party.
3:09
Speaker 1: Then the list like whittles down a lot. And he
3:11
Speaker 1: was actually on the Barstool podcast part of my take,
3:15
Speaker 1: and he was explaining it that he only has seventy
3:18
Speaker 1: five people get invited to this thing, but like it's
3:20
Speaker 1: the leading influencers, and it's the leading athletes, and it's
3:24
Speaker 1: the leading owners and sports So I'm curiously who made
3:27
Speaker 1: the cut this year. I've told Michael in person that
3:30
Speaker 1: I believe he should stream online on like I don't
3:33
Speaker 1: know if they have a fanatics dot com, but they
3:35
Speaker 1: should do an arrival show and have hosts and interview
3:40
Speaker 1: the people coming in, Like this is a bigger party
3:42
Speaker 1: than anything at the Oscars. The Oscars. Tom Cruse didn't
3:46
Speaker 1: even show up to the Oscars this year. Some of
3:49
Speaker 1: the other bigger stars we're not. I don't know who
3:50
Speaker 1: the biggest. I guess Colin Ferrell is the biggest A
3:52
Speaker 1: list star at the Oscars. I would argue that Michael's
3:55
Speaker 1: party in the Hampton's in the vein of like the
3:59
Speaker 1: p Diddy White party from years ago, It's going to
4:01
Speaker 1: have a better guest list. So I'm curiously who got
4:04
Speaker 1: the cut? Who made the cut, and then we'll see
4:06
Speaker 1: who and all that, And that's the important stuff you're
4:08
Speaker 1: listening to in July when it comes to NFL football.
4:11
Speaker 1: Do we think the other news?
4:12
Speaker 2: Yeah?
4:12
Speaker 1: Go on here?
4:13
Speaker 3: Following up from last week's show, Do we think Victor
4:16
Speaker 3: Wee Binnana is gonna get an invite?
4:18
Speaker 1: Ooh? Does Victor go? Does Wemby go?
4:22
Speaker 3: Yeah?
4:22
Speaker 2: He was in New York.
4:23
Speaker 1: He's not anymore, but he could come back. I'm gonna
4:28
Speaker 1: say no, I'm gonna say Wenby's got to earn those
4:30
Speaker 1: stripes first. I think we're gonna get EMBIID. I think
4:33
Speaker 1: we're gonna get hardened. Those guys are like, those guys
4:36
Speaker 1: are mainstays at all these things, and I think you're
4:40
Speaker 1: gonna get durant. NFL wise, Michael Parsons has been very
4:45
Speaker 1: tight with with Michael Rubin. They've been seen out together.
4:48
Speaker 1: I think that will be a definite. And I'm wondering
4:50
Speaker 1: if we get the big one. I don't know does
4:52
Speaker 1: number TV twelve. He's no longer playing, he doesn't have
4:55
Speaker 1: to be anywhere. He's a single man. From what we know,
4:58
Speaker 1: is Tom Brady rolling through. We'll see. That's gonna be
5:00
Speaker 1: the big question for me. Other quick things, the NFLPA
5:04
Speaker 1: announced a new director. That was a bit of a surprise.
5:07
Speaker 1: No one saw that coming. They announced their new executive director.
5:10
Speaker 1: So we'll get into that at another date and we'll
5:13
Speaker 1: talk about who he is and what he's experiences and
5:15
Speaker 1: how that all went down. I find it pretty interesting.
5:18
Speaker 1: And then a much smaller piece of news today in
5:21
Speaker 1: Tampa Bay. They signed extensions with three of their top
5:26
Speaker 1: front office people, which I think is interesting. Everyone thinks
5:28
Speaker 1: the Buccaneers are going to rebuild eventually and this might
5:30
Speaker 1: be one of those years where that after Brady, I'll go.
5:34
Speaker 1: They signed big contracts with three different front office executives,
5:37
Speaker 1: one of them Michael Greenberg known as Greeney around the Leak,
5:40
Speaker 1: who handles all the salary cap stuff. He's an assistant
5:42
Speaker 1: general manager. Along with John spy Tech, he's an assistant
5:44
Speaker 1: general manager. These guys have been there for favorite and
5:46
Speaker 1: then Jackie Davidson, who came over from the Jets, has
5:50
Speaker 1: been there for at least five years, and she got
5:52
Speaker 1: promoted to a new title as well. So very interesting
5:55
Speaker 1: that the Buccaneers are like, hey, you know what. I
5:57
Speaker 1: know it was Brady, but we also believe in the
6:00
Speaker 1: front office we've built. With all that said, we've now
6:03
Speaker 1: given you our July fourth party preview. And again it's
6:06
Speaker 1: Monday night, so not July fourth, It's Monday, which is
6:09
Speaker 1: July third. Keep your eyes on TMZ and the page
6:13
Speaker 1: six and all that. This is the stuff we live for,
6:15
Speaker 1: guys fanatics party. We'll see who was in the house,
6:17
Speaker 1: who made the cut and who didn't, and then other
6:20
Speaker 1: than that, we'll keep an eye on all the different
6:22
Speaker 1: adventures from all these players and coaches and owners, all
6:26
Speaker 1: enjoying their vacations right now because the NFL is shutting
6:30
Speaker 1: it down for a few weeks before we get to
6:32
Speaker 1: training camp with no further ado. I'm excited for this one.
6:34
Speaker 1: Here's Kellen Moore. So excited for our next guest. As
6:42
Speaker 1: I mentioned in the monologue, covered him as a player
6:44
Speaker 1: when he was with the Lions, covered him as a
6:46
Speaker 1: player when he's with the Cowboys. Then of course is
6:48
Speaker 1: one of the great offensive minds for the Cowboys, and
6:51
Speaker 1: now he's with the Los Angeles Chargers and he's on
6:53
Speaker 1: the season with Peter Schriger. Kellen Moore, Welcome to the podcast.
6:57
Speaker 2: Thanks for having me.
6:58
Speaker 1: I'm fired up, so excited to have you man, And
7:01
Speaker 1: it's kind of a cool part of your career right now.
7:04
Speaker 1: You've left the Nest if you will, You've been in
7:06
Speaker 1: Dallas all these years and now you're joining the Los
7:08
Speaker 1: Angeles Chargers. The announcement was made in January or so
7:13
Speaker 1: tell us what it's been like first six months with
7:16
Speaker 1: the Chargers and working with Justin Herbert specifically.
7:19
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I know, it's been so much fun. I mean, yeah,
7:21
Speaker 3: we're fortunate. We're in Dallas for eight years, very much
7:24
Speaker 3: became home, and so all our kids pretty much they
7:27
Speaker 3: only knew Dallas, and so we loved it.
7:29
Speaker 2: There, had a ton of fun. Eight years in the NFL.
7:32
Speaker 3: We know how the cycle of this thing sometimes goes,
7:35
Speaker 3: and so we're fortunate and it worked out great.
7:38
Speaker 2: It was awesome.
7:38
Speaker 3: I was fired up to be able to come down
7:40
Speaker 3: here to the Chargers to work with Brandon.
7:42
Speaker 2: We kind of connected last.
7:44
Speaker 3: Year we did a joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys
7:46
Speaker 3: and the LA Chargers, and so that was kind of
7:49
Speaker 3: initial connection there, and so we connected, stayed in contact
7:52
Speaker 3: like so many people do in this profession, and you know,
7:55
Speaker 3: it happened fast, but it worked out great, and so
7:57
Speaker 3: we were fired up to get down here. It was
7:59
Speaker 3: a fun change of scenery and it's been just a
8:02
Speaker 3: ton of fun just kind of building this thing from
8:05
Speaker 3: the ground up with everyone just kind of collaborating and
8:07
Speaker 3: starting with Justin and the rest of the staff, and
8:09
Speaker 3: so it's been a ton of fun.
8:10
Speaker 1: It was fun. I was at the combine in Indianapolis
8:12
Speaker 1: and you walked by and I recognized your face, of course,
8:14
Speaker 1: and I knew it was you be all Chargers stuff
8:16
Speaker 1: on him, like, oh, that's different. Okay, I guess this
8:18
Speaker 1: is it. And it only feels different for him too.
8:21
Speaker 1: Is there a big ad justin period? I know, coaches
8:23
Speaker 1: jump places place, But for someone like you who is
8:24
Speaker 1: with the Cowboys for the end of your NFL playing
8:27
Speaker 1: career and then of course all your coaching careers so far,
8:30
Speaker 1: does it feel like it's a new beginning or does
8:32
Speaker 1: it feel like, Hey, this is the gig and just
8:33
Speaker 1: put me wherever I have to be.
8:35
Speaker 2: It definitely feels new, which is exciting.
8:37
Speaker 3: When I was in Dallas, I was fortunate I was around,
8:39
Speaker 3: you know, Jason was the head coach at the time,
8:41
Speaker 3: and I was fortunate to kind of be able to
8:43
Speaker 3: transition into the coaching side because of him and Scott,
8:46
Speaker 3: Lena Hand and those guys who were down there at
8:48
Speaker 3: the time, and then then to stay through the transition
8:50
Speaker 3: of Mike and so there's always kind of been an
8:53
Speaker 3: established situation there, and so you know, it was kind
8:56
Speaker 3: of a smoother transition, and so this one's been really
8:59
Speaker 3: exciting just because it's really a you know, Brandon certainly
9:02
Speaker 3: has runs the defense, and this is kind of a
9:04
Speaker 3: clean slate on offense, and so it's been a lot
9:07
Speaker 3: of fun just building it.
9:08
Speaker 2: You know, taking.
9:09
Speaker 3: Pieces that were already in place here, things that Justin's
9:12
Speaker 3: done such a good job with that we want definitely
9:14
Speaker 3: keep and keep incorporating and don't lose sight on any
9:17
Speaker 3: of those things.
9:18
Speaker 2: Bring some Dallas stuff.
9:19
Speaker 3: And then the third part was just hey, let's go
9:21
Speaker 3: explore together and let's have fun building this thing.
9:23
Speaker 1: It's fun because I had Nathaniel Hackett on last week
9:25
Speaker 1: and it's it's not a similar situation because he's been
9:27
Speaker 1: with Rogers. And the only thing that I said was, now,
9:31
Speaker 1: Salah is the defensive head coach, and you've kind of
9:33
Speaker 1: have the green light. And for years he was with
9:35
Speaker 1: Marone and then he was of course with Lafleur, who
9:37
Speaker 1: were offensive coaches. You're similarly in that kind of boat,
9:40
Speaker 1: which you just referenced that Staley's a defensive mastermind. He's
9:43
Speaker 1: also a great head coach, but he's not going to
9:45
Speaker 1: be calling plays over your head or he's not going
9:47
Speaker 1: to have input on this stuff. This is maybe your
9:48
Speaker 1: first opportunity where you're the guy to call the plays
9:51
Speaker 1: around the offense. Without an offensive head coach above you
9:53
Speaker 1: on the ORG.
9:53
Speaker 2: Chart, it is a different dynamic.
9:55
Speaker 3: It is fun just from the standpoint of, you know,
9:58
Speaker 3: us just building it however we want, you know, it
10:01
Speaker 3: is fun to kind of do those recap meetings. Brand
10:03
Speaker 3: and I tend to gravitate to each other towards the
10:05
Speaker 3: end of the day, just recap, okay, what happened on
10:07
Speaker 3: each side of the ball, what we meet about, and
10:10
Speaker 3: those are always really fun conversations. A lot of the
10:12
Speaker 3: offensive coaches and has rolled their eyes and I'm going
10:14
Speaker 3: into brands offs because they're like, he might be in
10:16
Speaker 3: there for fifteen minutes, it might be there for two hours.
10:18
Speaker 3: We really don't know, you know, And Brandon and I
10:21
Speaker 3: just kind of start recapping all of a sudden. The
10:23
Speaker 3: coolest part of it, I think is you get that
10:25
Speaker 3: perspective of a defensive head coach, you know, and so
10:28
Speaker 3: when you're talking to him and sharing kind of your
10:30
Speaker 3: plan or vision, he can spin it from the other
10:34
Speaker 3: side of you know, just kind of Okay, if we're
10:35
Speaker 3: on the defensive side, this is how i'd see it,
10:37
Speaker 3: this is this something you may want to consider, And
10:39
Speaker 3: so all those conversations been just so much fun.
10:43
Speaker 1: We have Good Morning Football during the year, and we
10:45
Speaker 1: do the show five days a week and it's three hours,
10:47
Speaker 1: and we're always on in the morning, and it's always
10:49
Speaker 1: talking about the young quarterbacks, and it's like Mahomes, Burrow, Allen,
10:54
Speaker 1: and I'm always chiming in Herbert Herbert, and it's like,
10:58
Speaker 1: and Tilly has that big playoff success, and maybe Tilly
11:01
Speaker 1: has that huge print. He might not be considered the
11:03
Speaker 1: same way those guys are, But you've had a chance
11:05
Speaker 1: to watch this young man for a couple of months. Now,
11:08
Speaker 1: what does he bring to the table, Because I think
11:10
Speaker 1: there are some throws that he throws at I don't
11:12
Speaker 1: know if anyone else in the NFL can even attempt.
11:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt. Justin's been phenomenal.
11:17
Speaker 3: I think a the person, awesome person, one of the
11:21
Speaker 3: simplest people I've ever met.
11:22
Speaker 1: You know this explain that because I kind of know,
11:25
Speaker 1: but I don't see it day to day.
11:27
Speaker 3: I just see the one of the simpler people in
11:29
Speaker 3: the world for his situation and the potential out there
11:32
Speaker 3: for him as a person off the field.
11:35
Speaker 2: Very simple person.
11:36
Speaker 3: I Meanven came in when I got here, I mean,
11:38
Speaker 3: he just basically did rehab. He'd come in for a
11:40
Speaker 3: couple hours, do you rehab, you run into him, he'd
11:42
Speaker 3: head out. Maybe you'd go up to Eugene and you know,
11:45
Speaker 3: be back in the hometown. And other than that, you know,
11:48
Speaker 3: he didn't explore a whole lot. And so he's been awesome,
11:51
Speaker 3: awesome to work with. He's been a ton of fun
11:53
Speaker 3: just collaborating on this thing. When you step on the field,
11:56
Speaker 3: certainly you see the physical ability. I laugh, because as
12:00
Speaker 3: a coach, you teached you know, this is the install
12:02
Speaker 3: this is the progression. Here's some alerts, you know if
12:05
Speaker 3: you get these certain looks. And then he just goes
12:07
Speaker 3: out there and rips a throw and you just.
12:08
Speaker 2: Kind of look at the back of TBS and say, hey,
12:10
Speaker 2: first of all, don't try that.
12:12
Speaker 3: Second of all, I would have never considered throwing that,
12:14
Speaker 3: but maybe we should start considering that.
12:16
Speaker 2: So it's pretty awesome.
12:17
Speaker 1: Yeah, And I guess with your offense with him, Like
12:20
Speaker 1: you guys put up such huge numbers in Dallas for years,
12:23
Speaker 1: and there was a vertical game and there's a downfield game.
12:25
Speaker 1: And if you read the Chargers blogs, you listen to
12:27
Speaker 1: the Chargers podcast, the assumption is like, all right, it's
12:31
Speaker 1: gonna be bombs away Air Coriel style here with Kellen
12:33
Speaker 1: and Justin. Just to sneak peek a little bit, like,
12:36
Speaker 1: what do you hope to unleash in this offense out
12:38
Speaker 1: of this quarterback who obviously has that canon arm and
12:40
Speaker 1: the smarts to know when to use it and when
12:42
Speaker 1: not to.
12:43
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, you know, certainly everyone wants us to
12:45
Speaker 3: throw it deep every place. So we'll see if that works,
12:47
Speaker 3: you know, we'll test it out.
12:49
Speaker 2: But you know, I think what.
12:51
Speaker 3: It allows us to do is, you know, Justin's such
12:53
Speaker 3: a smart decision maker. It allows you to really call
12:56
Speaker 3: it in an aggressive manner, and he does such a
12:58
Speaker 3: great job. We always say, aggressively take what they give us, Like,
13:01
Speaker 3: if they give us these shots, they give us something vertical.
13:03
Speaker 3: We got these skill players that we feel really really
13:05
Speaker 3: good about. Just take him, just go for it, you know,
13:07
Speaker 3: and if not, take the completion, take the check down.
13:10
Speaker 3: Austin is going to catch a check down and get
13:11
Speaker 3: you another first down, and then we'll call another one.
13:13
Speaker 3: And so I think the mentality of that has been
13:16
Speaker 3: the way we've been kind of training at this certain
13:18
Speaker 3: entire offseason and certainly. I think we got the guys
13:20
Speaker 3: to be able to execute those things.
13:22
Speaker 1: Yeah, I I can hear the excitement in everybodys You
13:24
Speaker 1: mentioned him being just a simple dude. Like I remember
13:27
Speaker 1: during the pre draft build up, he goes on he
13:29
Speaker 1: wins Rose Bowl MVP when Senior Bowl MVP shows up
13:33
Speaker 1: and like blows everyone away at the combine, competes at
13:35
Speaker 1: the combine, and the talk was like literally it was
13:38
Speaker 1: and it was real was is he vocal enough? And
13:41
Speaker 1: I talked to Staley and he's like vocal enough, Like
13:44
Speaker 1: he's the leader, He's the outfit in our in our building,
13:46
Speaker 1: and that that when you're a starter and you're a
13:50
Speaker 1: husman guy and all this stuff that like you're talking about,
13:52
Speaker 1: it's hard not to be a leader in the building,
13:55
Speaker 1: and this guy is that leader. It's just maybe we
13:57
Speaker 1: don't see it on commercials or on Instagram every day.
14:00
Speaker 1: Would you agree that's kind of the case.
14:02
Speaker 2: One hundred percent.
14:03
Speaker 3: I think, like anyone you grow into leadership, you know,
14:06
Speaker 3: it gets it gets bigger and bigger, better and better.
14:09
Speaker 3: However you want to view it each and every year.
14:10
Speaker 3: I mean, this is fourth year, you know, and based
14:13
Speaker 3: off everything I've seen experience with and around him. You know,
14:17
Speaker 3: this year, he's been phenomenal. He's had presence, he's he's
14:20
Speaker 3: been very open and willing to stand up in front
14:22
Speaker 3: of the entire room on offense, share his perspective, give
14:26
Speaker 3: give feedback to players. When he steps on the field,
14:29
Speaker 3: there's there's no real question who's who's the alpha, who's
14:33
Speaker 3: the leader of this thing? He takes command, takes charge,
14:36
Speaker 3: and it's been really fun to see.
14:38
Speaker 1: They played the Raiders on a Thursday night two years
14:40
Speaker 1: ago and it was the first time Akman and Buck
14:42
Speaker 1: were doing a Chargers game with Herbert and he made
14:45
Speaker 1: a pass across his body and Aikman just like is like,
14:47
Speaker 1: oh my god, he just like laws it. And I'm like,
14:51
Speaker 1: that's what he has the capability of. And then you
14:53
Speaker 1: add in this what I would call just what seems
14:56
Speaker 1: like a professional football team, but also potentially an NBA
15:01
Speaker 1: starting five at receiver with the height that you guys have,
15:03
Speaker 1: it's a really cool mix. Then you add in Quentin Johnson,
15:06
Speaker 1: who a big dude. You got to be excited to
15:08
Speaker 1: have all these tools and these weapons here with this offense.
15:11
Speaker 3: Yeah, com and versatility on the offense, which I think
15:13
Speaker 3: we're really really excited about, you know, use guys in
15:15
Speaker 3: different positions, align them in different ways, and utilize all that.
15:19
Speaker 3: Certainly we'd like to say, like, you know, we got
15:22
Speaker 3: so much height on this team, we're gonna be throwing
15:24
Speaker 3: in a different jet stream, you know, like these guys.
15:27
Speaker 3: You know, we got Q and Keenan and Mike and
15:30
Speaker 3: Gerald and you know, sneak Austin in there from the backfield,
15:33
Speaker 3: and yeah, all these other guys that are our depth guys,
15:36
Speaker 3: and so it's gonna be a lot of fun.
15:38
Speaker 1: And then a great offensive line. We know that Slater
15:40
Speaker 1: goes down and then this kid Seller shows up last year,
15:43
Speaker 1: and then obviously with the rookies, ion like their offensive
15:45
Speaker 1: line was awesome last year despite major injuries.
15:48
Speaker 2: One of my favorite things was the when I first
15:51
Speaker 2: got here.
15:51
Speaker 3: We spent our first week and because the offensive staff
15:54
Speaker 3: was pretty much the same other than the quarterback coach
15:56
Speaker 3: Doug Nasmeyer came from Dallas, it was the same staff
15:59
Speaker 3: that've been here last year. So the first week I
16:01
Speaker 3: basically just sat there and listened to everyone, and so
16:04
Speaker 3: it was a really cool They basically went through the
16:05
Speaker 3: roster and one gave their perspective on every player that
16:09
Speaker 3: was currently on our roster. When we got to the
16:11
Speaker 3: offensive line, it was so much fun to just to
16:13
Speaker 3: hear the journey that all these guys took and you
16:16
Speaker 3: know these uh you know Jamari pop in there and
16:19
Speaker 3: you know, just.
16:20
Speaker 1: Was he six, a sixth round pick and played left
16:22
Speaker 1: tacker in the NFL. Yeah, the rookie, Like that's incredible.
16:25
Speaker 3: And just like from the first snap, just like, okay,
16:27
Speaker 3: I'll take over this left tackle spot. That's nothing big
16:29
Speaker 3: for me. I played at Georgia. I played four years
16:31
Speaker 3: at Georgia. Nothing's that big to me. But it's a
16:34
Speaker 3: really cool group. You know, it's a really young group
16:36
Speaker 3: that's developing and kind of coming together. And then you
16:38
Speaker 3: got Corey in the middle kind of as that veteran
16:40
Speaker 3: anchor center, and so I think it's like this perfect
16:43
Speaker 3: blend for those guys.
16:44
Speaker 1: I love it. Your story is so cool. Take us
16:48
Speaker 1: back to Prosser, Washington. What that town is? How many
16:51
Speaker 1: people and how in the world you made it out
16:54
Speaker 1: of there to be, you know, an NFL offensive coordinator
16:57
Speaker 1: and obviously seem to be a head coach.
16:59
Speaker 3: Yeah, So we were just there this past weeks. Make
17:02
Speaker 3: our rounds through Prosser, Washington. If anyone knows that, you
17:05
Speaker 3: shouldn't he shouldn't know where that is. But it's a
17:09
Speaker 3: town of six thousand people southeastern Washington. It's not the
17:12
Speaker 3: rainy Seattle. It's the desert on the east side. No
17:15
Speaker 3: one knows that. Half the people in the world don't
17:17
Speaker 3: know there's a desert.
17:17
Speaker 1: I did not know there was a desert part of Washington.
17:20
Speaker 1: This is a mission, all right.
17:21
Speaker 3: It's all agriculture and all that good stuff. But small
17:24
Speaker 3: little town. My dad was our high school coach, so
17:27
Speaker 3: he was the head football coach for for really, you know,
17:30
Speaker 3: forever until we got to college. But uh, it kind
17:33
Speaker 3: of had that Friday night lights feel to it, you know,
17:35
Speaker 3: like that's that's how I grew up. I grew up
17:37
Speaker 3: wanting to be a Prosper Mustang all honestly, I didn't
17:39
Speaker 3: really you know, college or something. Yeah, you'd love to
17:41
Speaker 3: do that, you'd love to do the NFL, but like
17:43
Speaker 3: Prosper Mustangs, Like that's the best thing ever. Those are
17:45
Speaker 3: all my idols growing up, you know, and.
17:47
Speaker 1: So made me a couple of legends from the program
17:49
Speaker 1: from before you. I love this stuff.
17:51
Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, well, I'm number eleven because a Dan
17:53
Speaker 3: Marshatt he was, he was number eleven.
17:55
Speaker 2: He's a receiver.
17:56
Speaker 3: I was getting right into the right into the youth
17:58
Speaker 3: football stage. And I was like, Dan's my guy.
18:00
Speaker 1: I want to forget Randy Moss, forget Chris Carter, forget
18:05
Speaker 1: any of the sea. That's my guy.
18:06
Speaker 2: Marsha Yep, yep, damn.
18:09
Speaker 3: So, uh, you know there's all these quarterbacks Tyler Thomas
18:12
Speaker 3: who there weren't a ton of guys who ever like
18:15
Speaker 3: went to like Division one.
18:16
Speaker 2: There was only a couple of us. Tyler Thomas ended
18:18
Speaker 2: up going.
18:18
Speaker 3: To Oregon State. He was a quarterback. Man, I can
18:22
Speaker 3: go on and on, can I give you every single
18:24
Speaker 3: quarterback from But.
18:24
Speaker 1: I love that. And this is a town that I've
18:27
Speaker 1: I've read up on it. Two stoplights right, two traffic lights?
18:29
Speaker 2: Yeah, oh yeah, we upgrade. We got three now three?
18:32
Speaker 1: Okay? Are we talking like an outback? And Applebee's is
18:35
Speaker 1: that even there? Or is it like the general store?
18:37
Speaker 2: No?
18:37
Speaker 3: No, McDonald's, KFC, Taco Bell. It's a it's a hybrid,
18:41
Speaker 3: which is unique.
18:43
Speaker 2: Starbucks.
18:44
Speaker 1: Uh, the Bucks made it there right from stars.
18:47
Speaker 3: Yeah, you gotta have a Starbucks. It's kind of on
18:49
Speaker 3: your way from one place to the other. They snuck
18:51
Speaker 3: a Starbucks in there, but other than that, a couple
18:53
Speaker 3: of local restaurants and that's about it.
18:55
Speaker 1: And I know you would go to these Boise State
18:58
Speaker 1: youth football camps, right, is that part of your childhood?
19:00
Speaker 1: And I guess your father would bring you to the
19:04
Speaker 1: blue field. Like where did that Boise stay thing come from?
19:07
Speaker 3: Yeah, so when I was really young, my dad, uh
19:10
Speaker 3: so he was our obviously our head football coach.
19:12
Speaker 2: They would go to like a team football camp.
19:14
Speaker 3: So they'd bring the entire high school team to these
19:15
Speaker 3: camps and they spend a week there and early it
19:18
Speaker 3: was always at Boise, so they'd always go there. Uh
19:21
Speaker 3: So we always kind of have this uh you know,
19:23
Speaker 3: fondness of Boise. I remember it as a child child.
19:26
Speaker 3: And so as a high school coach's kid, you kind
19:29
Speaker 3: of what your spring breaks are and what your summers
19:31
Speaker 3: are is pretty much hopping around to college's. Uh spring
19:34
Speaker 3: break was usually you know, going to some college practices
19:36
Speaker 3: and just got you know, rolling with all these high
19:38
Speaker 3: school coaches that your dad is around. And so that
19:41
Speaker 3: was my childhood that that was very much normalized football
19:44
Speaker 3: for me and Uh, you know, that's that's what I did.
19:47
Speaker 1: When you got recruited to Boise State. Is this because
19:50
Speaker 1: I don't have the timeline in front of me. So
19:52
Speaker 1: everyone remembers the Fiesta Ball. It's Adrian Peterson and Oklahoma
19:55
Speaker 1: and Jared Zabranski and Ian Johnson and Boise knockoff. Were
19:59
Speaker 1: you on that team? Were you being recruited to be
20:01
Speaker 1: on that team? I know you came after Zabranski, so
20:03
Speaker 1: I'm not sure if you were like a red shirt
20:05
Speaker 1: or your back up or what.
20:06
Speaker 2: No.
20:06
Speaker 3: So I'm a senior in high school. I'm at the game.
20:09
Speaker 3: I'm down in that end zone.
20:10
Speaker 2: Yep.
20:11
Speaker 3: I went to the game. I was already committed to
20:12
Speaker 3: Boise so I was. I was all wrapped up and
20:16
Speaker 3: ready to go. And yeah, I was at the game.
20:19
Speaker 3: It was awesome.
20:20
Speaker 1: Saw the proposal at the end that was in the
20:22
Speaker 1: end zone you were in or.
20:23
Speaker 2: No, yep, I was right down that end zone. Yep.
20:25
Speaker 1: So you get there and then Boise he becomes one
20:30
Speaker 1: of the primitive programs in the country. You guys would
20:32
Speaker 1: roll off the wins for the listeners. You are the
20:35
Speaker 1: all time leader and wins as a quarterback, which is
20:38
Speaker 1: an amazing feat and it comes up anytime a young
20:40
Speaker 1: quarterback like Desmon Rider came out. I think he's third maybe,
20:43
Speaker 1: And I was mentioned literally every time Ridder had anything
20:46
Speaker 1: going on. Every time tell you somebo the Falcons, your
20:49
Speaker 1: experience in Boise, Idaho and playing for for that team,
20:53
Speaker 1: what would say your biggest takeaway was from that whole
20:55
Speaker 1: entire four year span.
20:57
Speaker 3: Yeah, it was just this utopia of a culture. Chris
21:01
Speaker 3: Pierce is the absolute best. He has this perfect blend
21:05
Speaker 3: of you know, he spends so much time, I think
21:08
Speaker 3: on the culture and the environment. He really calls it
21:11
Speaker 3: an environment because everyone needs the word culture, but just
21:14
Speaker 3: just building this environment that allows everyone to kind of blossom.
21:17
Speaker 3: And so I always remember two things there, one being
21:21
Speaker 3: you know, how much time he spent on building the program,
21:24
Speaker 3: building the right kind of people. The you know, every Friday,
21:28
Speaker 3: you know, we'd play on Saturdays, obviously, and every Friday night,
21:30
Speaker 3: you know, you have that team meeting that everyone's supposed
21:32
Speaker 3: to get all jacked up and fired up for a
21:34
Speaker 3: football game on you know, right, and you're all college kids,
21:37
Speaker 3: and we'd spend the whole time and he's talking about life,
21:39
Speaker 3: you know, like that's what the whole means about something
21:41
Speaker 3: different about life. It was called Bronco Magic and I
21:44
Speaker 3: still have the sheets of paper, and it was like,
21:46
Speaker 3: you know, it was one of the coolest things that
21:48
Speaker 3: I thought brought perspective.
21:49
Speaker 1: So Harry got this huge game, huge game against the
21:52
Speaker 1: Vada coming up, and you've got the two ranked teams.
21:54
Speaker 1: Give me on national TV, and he's given you life
21:56
Speaker 1: lessons the night before game.
21:57
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, some poem about life. And it was awesome.
22:03
Speaker 3: It was absolutely awesome. It was also a unique team
22:06
Speaker 3: because as most people probably no Boise, Idaho doesn't exactly
22:09
Speaker 3: have twenty Division one players rolling around, you know, the state,
22:12
Speaker 3: and so it was this super diverse team. I mean,
22:15
Speaker 3: we had people from all across the country, all across
22:18
Speaker 3: the world.
22:18
Speaker 2: We had guys from.
22:19
Speaker 3: Netherlands, Canada, Florida, New Jersey, California.
22:23
Speaker 2: You know. I was kind of part of.
22:24
Speaker 3: The little small Northwest crew, and so you have this
22:28
Speaker 3: huge diversity of this team, and so it's a really
22:30
Speaker 3: cool melting pot of just bringing all these guys together.
22:32
Speaker 3: And I think that's one of the things that I
22:33
Speaker 3: always we were talking about as a team as an
22:36
Speaker 3: offense right before we broke about how this football thing
22:40
Speaker 3: brings us to people we never connect with them any
22:43
Speaker 3: other way. And that's one of the coolest things, you know,
22:45
Speaker 3: Like even with the Chargers right now, like the guys
22:47
Speaker 3: that you get to meet, it's like I would have
22:49
Speaker 3: never met this person if I wasn't a part of
22:51
Speaker 3: this cool NFL journey or college football journey, whatever it
22:54
Speaker 3: may be.
22:54
Speaker 2: And so that's what's really fun.
22:56
Speaker 1: It's awesome. I always say that, you know, there's all
22:59
Speaker 1: these issues in the country, and there's divide and division,
23:01
Speaker 1: and that's fine. It exists, it's going to exist. Kind
23:04
Speaker 1: of go in that locker room and you see that
23:06
Speaker 1: they're like there's almost like a glimmer of hope, Like,
23:08
Speaker 1: all right, if that guy can gel with that guy
23:10
Speaker 1: and they could put it all together despite their difference
23:13
Speaker 1: in backgrounds, maybe there's a chance, you know, like and
23:15
Speaker 1: I don't know if that's too pie in the sky,
23:17
Speaker 1: but I think that's what.
23:17
Speaker 2: You're getting at No, we certainly feel that way.
23:20
Speaker 1: All right, left handed quarterback obviously at Boise was that
23:25
Speaker 1: held against you think as you entered the NFL draft
23:27
Speaker 1: as that thing kind of faded away. I think at
23:30
Speaker 1: one point the last couple year before two of there
23:32
Speaker 1: were no left handed quarterbacks.
23:34
Speaker 2: Yeah.
23:35
Speaker 1: It reminds me of a question, you know, it's like
23:36
Speaker 1: a ridiculous question, like, so you know, what's it like
23:39
Speaker 1: being a left handed quip? But well, I've always been
23:40
Speaker 1: a left handed quarterback obviously.
23:42
Speaker 2: Yeah.
23:43
Speaker 1: But there were you know, Steve Young, Michael Vick, all
23:45
Speaker 1: those guys probably when you were growing up, and then
23:47
Speaker 1: it kind of faded away.
23:49
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, no, it's it's definitely. I think a lot
23:51
Speaker 3: of people got smarter. They went to baseball. You know,
23:53
Speaker 3: you're a left the ls or stuff, spably go play
23:54
Speaker 3: that sport instead. But no, yeah, it's certainly something that
23:59
Speaker 3: I think is a unique dynamic. To be honest, I
24:01
Speaker 3: think there was some feedback going into the NFL that like, hey,
24:04
Speaker 3: if our starter is not a lefty, like we really
24:06
Speaker 3: don't want to have a lefty behind him, you know.
24:08
Speaker 3: And now the game was a lot more under center.
24:10
Speaker 3: The game has become a lot more of a shotgun game,
24:12
Speaker 3: and so it's I think there's more flexibility and it's
24:15
Speaker 3: an easier transition. But uh yeah, when I got in
24:18
Speaker 3: the league, I think there are six or seven lefties.
24:21
Speaker 1: Let's go through them, because I mean it was probably you.
24:23
Speaker 1: And then I'm thinking like Tyler fig Pin or Palco,
24:26
Speaker 1: which one of those one of those things?
24:27
Speaker 3: Left Canfield from Oregon State Sean, Yeah, Sean Canfield, Michael Vick,
24:35
Speaker 3: Tim Tebow, Matt Lionert, Pat White might have been you know,
24:41
Speaker 3: had actually coaches with us.
24:43
Speaker 2: So we got a couple of lefties on the staff.
24:44
Speaker 1: Yeah that's cool.
24:45
Speaker 3: We're fire if we got to keep the lefties together.
24:48
Speaker 3: But uh, there's one or two more. But at one
24:51
Speaker 3: point it was a little bit more normal and lo
24:53
Speaker 3: and behold. Uh we went through a point where I
24:55
Speaker 3: think there's a couple of years, two or three years
24:57
Speaker 3: where we have no lefties.
24:59
Speaker 2: Finally two came and saved the day. So hopefully we
25:01
Speaker 2: get a couple more.
25:03
Speaker 1: Uh yeah, the way that the world moves whatever. So
25:05
Speaker 1: the Dolphin job becomes open after they let go Brian Floora.
25:08
Speaker 1: Do you interviewed for that job? Do you come in
25:10
Speaker 1: with like a PowerPoint deck saying like I am the
25:12
Speaker 1: lefty quarterback guy, Like what are we doing here? I
25:15
Speaker 1: know the job especially goes to Mike McDaniel and it's
25:17
Speaker 1: all going to work out for everyone. But yeah, you
25:19
Speaker 1: gotta think that was your pitch right. Yeah.
25:21
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a lefty. He's a lefty. You know, I'm
25:23
Speaker 2: the one guy I can teach him.
25:25
Speaker 1: I can feel it.
25:25
Speaker 2: This is it.
25:27
Speaker 1: It is interesting though that, like you said, the baseball stuff,
25:30
Speaker 1: and you know, we talk about specialization in sports, and
25:34
Speaker 1: now youths are told, like, you pick this one sport.
25:38
Speaker 1: I've heard you speak on it before. You don't believe
25:39
Speaker 1: in that, right, play all sports.
25:41
Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm a small town kid.
25:43
Speaker 2: We played every sport. We grew up together. It's the
25:46
Speaker 2: same pack of kids. We went from football to basketball
25:49
Speaker 2: to baseball.
25:49
Speaker 3: At one point, I eventually kind of, you know, didn't
25:52
Speaker 3: do baseball by stuck with football and basketball the way
25:54
Speaker 3: to the end.
25:54
Speaker 2: And so I think it's huge. I think it's so important.
25:58
Speaker 3: I think there's too many examples across our league, across
26:00
Speaker 3: other leagues of guys who played a lot of different
26:03
Speaker 3: things and all those skills kind of translate to something
26:05
Speaker 3: in the.
26:05
Speaker 1: End it works out. One of my favorite men in
26:09
Speaker 1: the NFL, and I know a mentor of yours, is
26:10
Speaker 1: Jim Caldwell. When you were in Detroit, you obviously were
26:14
Speaker 1: under his guys, and he speaks with such a I
26:18
Speaker 1: don't reverence Like I don't even know how to say it.
26:21
Speaker 1: When Jim talks, like everyone listens and he doesn't speak
26:23
Speaker 1: off and he's not yelling, he's not I guess my
26:26
Speaker 1: question is just the Jim Caldwell experience for those who
26:28
Speaker 1: don't know, Like when you play in that offense on
26:30
Speaker 1: that team with him as a head coach, that soothing voice,
26:33
Speaker 1: and yet those life lessons he always gives.
26:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, it was such a cool experience for me because
26:39
Speaker 3: being in the NFL, you think college football NFL like
26:42
Speaker 3: they got They're so different, right, and so you're fortunate
26:44
Speaker 3: to be around this Chris Peterson experience which is second
26:47
Speaker 3: to none. And then you meet Jim in the NFL.
26:50
Speaker 3: And the first time I met him, spent fifteen minutes
26:53
Speaker 3: with him. He knew my name, he knew everything about me.
26:55
Speaker 3: I'm a third string QB, barely hanging out on, hanging
26:58
Speaker 3: on like he has no reason to even know who
26:59
Speaker 3: I am, Like, you know, like I should be the
27:01
Speaker 3: one to introducing myself. He spends fifteen minutes just talking
27:04
Speaker 3: about life, talking about you know, family and all that,
27:06
Speaker 3: so that has nothing to do with football. Knows everything
27:08
Speaker 3: about you, like incredible, And then you get to the
27:11
Speaker 3: point of him just being the leader and the coach.
27:13
Speaker 3: I thought it was really cool for me because at
27:16
Speaker 3: that point I really felt confident that, like, I want
27:18
Speaker 3: to get into coaching, that's kind of the.
27:20
Speaker 2: Part I want to take.
27:21
Speaker 3: At that point, Yeah, I think college was kind of confirmation.
27:23
Speaker 3: But then when you're in the NFL, you know, it's like, Okay,
27:27
Speaker 3: that's a different experience in college football, and can you
27:29
Speaker 3: really do it in a certain way, you know, or
27:32
Speaker 3: does everyone just you know, college and NFL there they're
27:34
Speaker 3: just different beasts and he can't do it that way.
27:37
Speaker 3: His presence and his ability to kind of in a
27:39
Speaker 3: more mild manner, have such command and presence in an
27:43
Speaker 3: NFL locker room on an NFL field. It was really
27:46
Speaker 3: awesome for me to see that, because, you know, I
27:48
Speaker 3: felt like I was a little bit more maybe that
27:50
Speaker 3: personality trait, you know, as far as more of a
27:52
Speaker 3: mild like I'm not a you know, yeller screamer all
27:55
Speaker 3: the time, like you know, but like Jim just had
27:57
Speaker 3: that perfect balance of like he picked and choose his
28:00
Speaker 3: words really wisely, and when he talked, everyone listens, you know,
28:04
Speaker 3: and it was incredible to be a part of it.
28:06
Speaker 1: Was there one piece of advice that you've held onto
28:08
Speaker 1: or one line or one statement or one quote that
28:11
Speaker 1: you kind of brought with you along the way. I
28:12
Speaker 1: hate to put you on the spot.
28:14
Speaker 2: That's a great question.
28:16
Speaker 3: There's so many, you know, or Loski and so you know,
28:19
Speaker 3: when I was there as Matthew, Dan and myself, I
28:22
Speaker 3: just remember these team meetings and I just remember all
28:26
Speaker 3: the informations.
28:27
Speaker 2: I couldn't keep up. You know, I'm sitting there trying
28:29
Speaker 2: to write all these notes of.
28:30
Speaker 3: All these you know, he always called it the charge
28:32
Speaker 3: in the season, and every like Wednesday could have some
28:34
Speaker 3: sort of like piece and it would be something. I'm
28:37
Speaker 3: just sitting there trying to like write these notes quick
28:39
Speaker 3: as possible. Now I'm looking over at Dan, like what
28:40
Speaker 3: did you get? You can catch like I'm trying to
28:43
Speaker 3: piece this whole thing together because I want all this information.
28:46
Speaker 3: But he had a really cool piece. He had a
28:48
Speaker 3: high cost for low living. It was a piece that
28:50
Speaker 3: he utilized. I'm sure a lot of people have heard
28:52
Speaker 3: about it. Just as far as the off the field stuff,
28:55
Speaker 3: the players, you know, have to be aware of in
28:57
Speaker 3: the NFL that there's a high cost for low living
28:59
Speaker 3: and the things that we do off the field that
29:01
Speaker 3: create headlines and can have huge impacts on your career.
29:04
Speaker 3: There's a high cost for those and so he tried
29:06
Speaker 3: to educate everyone in the way that Jim does, which
29:08
Speaker 3: is incredible, just educating those guys on something. Some things
29:11
Speaker 3: are just you know, you got to make smart decisions.
29:13
Speaker 3: We understand right and wrong. There's others that are you know, hey,
29:16
Speaker 3: these are tricky situations. Social media has some really tricky things,
29:18
Speaker 3: and so he tried to educate guys on that, and
29:20
Speaker 3: I thought it was incredible.
29:25
Speaker 1: Your favorite Matthew Stafford throw while you were in Detroit?
29:28
Speaker 1: Is there a game a moment where you can go
29:30
Speaker 1: back and say you're standing on the sidelines, either you're
29:33
Speaker 1: dressed or or not, and you're just like, holy moly,
29:35
Speaker 1: what was that? Because I, as I often say when
29:37
Speaker 1: I interviewed Code, it's like I was a sideline reporter
29:40
Speaker 1: and I was not on the A crew. So I
29:41
Speaker 1: got a lot of Lions games under my belt. I
29:43
Speaker 1: was very there's a lot of Hey, what's up to
29:45
Speaker 1: Sam Martin going on on the sidelines there? So is
29:49
Speaker 1: there a Stafford throw that sticks out? There's one that
29:51
Speaker 1: I'll never forget that. Nickveigh and I still like are
29:54
Speaker 1: giddy over that. When they played Washington and you guys
29:57
Speaker 1: were Detroit. Obviously he threw on in a game winner
29:59
Speaker 1: to Ankwon Bolden. That was just insane, that like, how
30:01
Speaker 1: does he pull it out? But you saw it every
30:03
Speaker 1: game and something that comes to mind just how amazing
30:05
Speaker 1: that arm talent.
30:07
Speaker 3: There are a lot, and I'll give you two. The
30:10
Speaker 3: first one is against the Bengals. I think this is
30:14
Speaker 3: two thousand and thirteen, I'm gonna guess. So it was
30:18
Speaker 3: a half rolls like a sprint out to the right.
30:20
Speaker 3: As we're rolling out and we're just gonna run a
30:23
Speaker 3: double move to Calvin Johnson and he's gonna run a
30:25
Speaker 3: little corner post and we're gonna kind of try and
30:28
Speaker 3: roll out to the right and then throw back to
30:29
Speaker 3: the left. And first of all, to throw is tremendous, Right,
30:33
Speaker 3: he just flicks this thing. He's rolling out to his
30:35
Speaker 3: right and he's throwing it to his left and he's
30:37
Speaker 3: just flicking this thing fifty sixty yards And as you're
30:40
Speaker 3: looking down the field, you're like, that guy doesn't really
30:42
Speaker 3: look open.
30:43
Speaker 2: You know, I'm on the sideline I'm just the backup
30:44
Speaker 2: guy hanging out. It doesn't really look open.
30:46
Speaker 3: It's about three or four Bengals jerseys down there, you know,
30:50
Speaker 3: George I Loka a Boise State Bronco being one of
30:53
Speaker 3: them down there, and he just throws this sucker throws
30:56
Speaker 3: up in the air and you just see Calvin just
30:57
Speaker 3: run right through all these people go up, leap it,
31:00
Speaker 3: grab this ball. I remember talking to George after the game.
31:03
Speaker 3: He's like, I don't know what we can do. I
31:05
Speaker 3: can't stop this guy. And it was a moment of
31:08
Speaker 3: like sometimes like you know what, it's players, not plays,
31:10
Speaker 3: you know, like those two.
31:12
Speaker 1: Guys are super human at what they're doing. It's fun
31:14
Speaker 1: to watch.
31:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, no doubt.
31:16
Speaker 1: What was the other one?
31:17
Speaker 3: And then the second one I would think of is
31:19
Speaker 3: we played in London in twenty fourteen.
31:22
Speaker 2: Golden tates on the outside.
31:23
Speaker 3: We just ran like three verts, it's like third and forever,
31:27
Speaker 3: and he rips a ball down the sideline.
31:30
Speaker 2: He kind of drops back, it's a little bit of depth.
31:32
Speaker 3: He steps up in the pocketing and just rips this
31:34
Speaker 3: ball down the right sidelines to Golden. I mean, it's
31:38
Speaker 3: gotta be fifty yards frozen rope. I don't think the
31:40
Speaker 3: ball is more than ten twelve feet off the ground
31:41
Speaker 3: the entire time, just rips it right between these cover two,
31:44
Speaker 3: safety and corner. I don't think anyone even considered he'd
31:47
Speaker 3: actually throw that in that situation, and he just rips
31:49
Speaker 3: this thing right in the end zone.
31:51
Speaker 2: It was incredible.
31:52
Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, So then you finish your time with Detroit,
31:56
Speaker 1: you go to Dallas. Scott Lenihan was there, and I
31:59
Speaker 1: imagine that's one of the reasons why it was a
32:01
Speaker 1: natural thing. I don't have it in front of me.
32:03
Speaker 1: I know that Romo was there obviously, and then the
32:05
Speaker 1: year Romo got hurt and Dak goes in, you were
32:08
Speaker 1: hurt also that summer, if I'm not mistaken. So it's
32:11
Speaker 1: like this like sliding doors moment, where like who knows
32:13
Speaker 1: if you had had your opportunity do you do? Do
32:15
Speaker 1: you ever lose sleep on that and say, hey, you know,
32:17
Speaker 1: the starter goes down, but I too, the backup was injured.
32:20
Speaker 1: So then Dak Prescott gets a chance to show a
32:22
Speaker 1: case with skills. How did you cope with that as
32:24
Speaker 1: a player at the time.
32:26
Speaker 3: I don't lose sleep now because I think everything happens
32:28
Speaker 3: for a reason, and it kind of led me to
32:30
Speaker 3: this coaching thing, which I'll get to. But at the time, Yeah,
32:33
Speaker 3: So twenty fifteen, I played a couple games. At the end,
32:36
Speaker 3: we were kind of, you know, we struggled that year.
32:38
Speaker 3: A lot of us end up paying quarterback Matt Castle, Whedon,
32:41
Speaker 3: Tony myself. You know, it was just a rough year
32:45
Speaker 3: for the Cowboys, and so coming back, it was Tony
32:48
Speaker 3: myself and then we end up drafting Dak in the
32:50
Speaker 3: fourth round and I still get a lot of reps
32:53
Speaker 3: as kind of the number two at the time. I
32:56
Speaker 3: have a freak deal at training camp out in Knoxnard.
32:58
Speaker 3: The fourth day, an offense lineman kind of gets pushed
33:00
Speaker 3: back and falls back on my leg.
33:02
Speaker 2: I break my ankle. So I went back to.
33:04
Speaker 3: Dallas, got surgery, kind of sitting there on the couch
33:06
Speaker 3: and I just remember you're watching because Tony was kind
33:10
Speaker 3: of dealing with some maintenance stuff at that point already
33:12
Speaker 3: with the back, and so Dak was taking a ton
33:14
Speaker 3: of reps in practice. He's basically taken ones, twos, and three.
33:17
Speaker 3: He's just going And they played that first game against
33:21
Speaker 3: the Rams and preseasons the first game in the LA Coliseum,
33:24
Speaker 3: and uh, he just goes out there and just is
33:26
Speaker 3: dealing and is incredible.
33:28
Speaker 1: There's two amazing touchdown passes if I remember, Yeah.
33:31
Speaker 3: And then I think, you know, they come back, they
33:33
Speaker 3: playing Dallas and the next week is at Seattle and
33:35
Speaker 3: that's where Tony you know, Tony's back goes out and
33:38
Speaker 3: he gets sacked, you know, just a kind of a
33:40
Speaker 3: freak deal, and Dak rolls out there and deals again.
33:43
Speaker 3: You know, And certainly in the back of your mind,
33:45
Speaker 3: as a competitor, you're kind of like, man like, there's
33:48
Speaker 3: a chance here, and I kind of missed the boat there,
33:50
Speaker 3: you know, And certainly there's a competitive side of you
33:53
Speaker 3: that kind of is challenged by that. But all things
33:56
Speaker 3: happen for a reason. A we figured out that Dak
33:59
Speaker 3: was really, really good. I'm glad we did, because he's
34:02
Speaker 3: turned into such a tremendous he's one of the premier
34:04
Speaker 3: quarterbacks in this league and one of the best guys
34:07
Speaker 3: in this league, and he's phenomenal live and fortunate to
34:10
Speaker 3: be around him for such a long time. But it
34:12
Speaker 3: also led me to the coaching side, you know, because
34:14
Speaker 3: that year I was on ir and Scott and Jason
34:17
Speaker 3: were awesome with me.
34:17
Speaker 2: They allowed me to kind of stay stay in it.
34:20
Speaker 3: I was in the quarterback room trying to be a
34:22
Speaker 3: resource or help in any possible way. Tony was rehabbing,
34:26
Speaker 3: Dak was the starter. Now Sanchez Mark Sanchez being Mark.
34:30
Speaker 3: He got signed like on Tuesday. So there's a lot
34:34
Speaker 3: of movie pieces in this in this room, and so
34:36
Speaker 3: there's an element of, hey, can you just stay in there?
34:38
Speaker 3: So there's at least some commonality there for Scott and
34:41
Speaker 3: for Wade Wilson, who was our quarterback coach at the time.
34:44
Speaker 3: And so it was awesome for me because it let
34:46
Speaker 3: me kind of go on the other side of the thing,
34:49
Speaker 3: be on the coaching side a little bit. I did
34:50
Speaker 3: some projects for them and just kind of helped in
34:52
Speaker 3: any possible way.
34:53
Speaker 2: But I think it.
34:54
Speaker 3: Also gave Jason and Scott a chance to kind of
34:56
Speaker 3: see me from that perspective, which lo and behold allowed
34:59
Speaker 3: me to transition right from player to coach two years later.
35:02
Speaker 3: And so I think without that moment, I don't think
35:04
Speaker 3: I'm doing that. I think, you know, most people would
35:06
Speaker 3: say you're crazy to go from player to coach.
35:08
Speaker 2: To allow that to happen in the NFL.
35:10
Speaker 1: Can you put that then in like a more concise thing,
35:12
Speaker 1: like just as a lesson, because I think of that situation,
35:16
Speaker 1: you've played your entire career waiting for your opportunity. Finally
35:19
Speaker 1: the opportunity arises and you can't physically go, and yet
35:21
Speaker 1: you found a way to pivot and make the most
35:23
Speaker 1: of the opportunity. I think that's a beautiful lesson for
35:25
Speaker 1: anyone in life.
35:27
Speaker 2: Yeah.
35:27
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we work our tail off for certain
35:30
Speaker 3: goals and aspirations, and sometimes life pivots and takes you
35:34
Speaker 3: to the path that maybe leads you down something else.
35:37
Speaker 3: And certainly, as a player, you want to play as
35:39
Speaker 3: long as you can. But I always knew I wanted
35:41
Speaker 3: to coach, and so I think the transition that allowed
35:45
Speaker 3: me to go through was tremendous. And sometimes you don't
35:48
Speaker 3: understand it going through it. You don't understand why me,
35:50
Speaker 3: why this situation. It helped us figure out Dak. It
35:54
Speaker 3: helped Dak, It helped myself as my journey went on.
35:57
Speaker 3: Things happened for a reason. I truly believe that it's beautiful.
36:00
Speaker 1: And now I look at it like in Denver and
36:02
Speaker 1: I'm friendly with Sean Payton. He hired Davis Webb, a
36:04
Speaker 1: twenty eight year old, as the quarter best coach. I'm
36:07
Speaker 1: not gonna say you broke down those doors, but you
36:09
Speaker 1: certainly laid the blueprint of Hey, it's possible for these
36:12
Speaker 1: guys to go straight from the playing field to the
36:14
Speaker 1: coaching Yeah.
36:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, And I was fortunate.
36:16
Speaker 3: I basically moved one chair over, you know, instead of
36:19
Speaker 3: being next to the computer, I was running the computer.
36:21
Speaker 3: Other than that, it was the same room, and so
36:24
Speaker 3: you know, I was really fortunate for that. I think
36:26
Speaker 3: it was a lot of fun.
36:27
Speaker 1: You can go as long or as quick as you
36:29
Speaker 1: want on this if I just say the name, and
36:30
Speaker 1: you did say he was one of the great here
36:31
Speaker 1: with Dak Prescott, because I feel like we take it
36:35
Speaker 1: for granted. What a guy is Walter Payton Man of
36:36
Speaker 1: the Year and he goes out there and he's got
36:38
Speaker 1: such consistency when he's on the field and yet hasn't
36:41
Speaker 1: won the big one in There are always critics with it.
36:43
Speaker 1: But as a player and as a man, your experience
36:45
Speaker 1: with Dak Prescott, what would you want listeners to know?
36:48
Speaker 2: The best person?
36:50
Speaker 3: I think the best leader I've ever been around, easily
36:54
Speaker 3: and in all honesty, player or coach or anything. I
36:56
Speaker 3: think his ability to connect with a team and all
36:59
Speaker 3: spectrums is rare and I've never seen it in any
37:02
Speaker 3: other way. His work, ethic, his command, I think he's
37:06
Speaker 3: InCred and so I know, you know, we've all been
37:08
Speaker 3: through that Dallas journey and he has a phenomenal way
37:12
Speaker 3: of being a deal with probably more than your average
37:14
Speaker 3: NFL starting quarterback, and he handled it beautifully. And yeah,
37:18
Speaker 3: he's certainly certainly a guy you.
37:20
Speaker 2: Forever root for.
37:21
Speaker 1: That's awesome, man. All Right, we do rapid fire. I
37:23
Speaker 1: was asked you some quick questions about philosophy, about your
37:26
Speaker 1: history in the NFL, and we we wrap it up.
37:28
Speaker 1: I'm loving this and I appreciate you taking the time,
37:31
Speaker 1: especially during this vacation week from it all. You would
37:34
Speaker 1: say your mentor in football is whom I.
37:37
Speaker 3: Would say My two most prominent ones are my dad
37:41
Speaker 3: across from Mustangs and Chris Peterson, not just those two
37:44
Speaker 3: stops of life. Uh yeah, I think those those were
37:47
Speaker 3: the foundations for who I am.
37:49
Speaker 1: You played with guys like Calvin Johnson, You've also played with, uh,
37:55
Speaker 1: you played with superstars like does Brynt. You play with
37:57
Speaker 1: all these great NFL players. The most freakish athlete that
38:02
Speaker 1: you have played with in NFL is who.
38:04
Speaker 3: Calvin by by far like Calvin I think was just
38:08
Speaker 3: he's just different. And like you know, I remember the
38:11
Speaker 3: first time, so I'm a rookie, I show up to
38:15
Speaker 3: OTA's and they got we're in the red zone for
38:18
Speaker 3: some reason, I think it had a ben a screw up.
38:20
Speaker 3: Calvin's on the field when I'm on the field, which
38:22
Speaker 3: shouldn't be going on on the thirst and QB and
38:25
Speaker 3: we call a red zone play and there's like two
38:27
Speaker 3: guys in the back line and I happened to throw
38:30
Speaker 3: to the guy on the right, who was Titus Young
38:31
Speaker 3: at the.
38:32
Speaker 2: Time that I had played with Poise and.
38:36
Speaker 3: Matthew and Sean Hill be in the backup at the time,
38:38
Speaker 3: who's phenomenal.
38:39
Speaker 2: He just looks at me and.
38:40
Speaker 3: Says, if that other guy's ever on the field, just throw.
38:43
Speaker 1: It to.
38:46
Speaker 3: The rest of the time and for whatever reason that
38:48
Speaker 3: guy's on the field, just throw it to him.
38:50
Speaker 2: And that was like the simplest lesson.
38:51
Speaker 3: Hey, that guy's different than any other human being that
38:54
Speaker 3: you'll ever be around.
38:55
Speaker 1: Yeah, growing up, who is the player? And you mentioned
38:58
Speaker 1: those those mustangs that you liked. But who was the
39:00
Speaker 1: player in the NFL that you aspired to be or
39:02
Speaker 1: that you saw and said, hey, maybe someday.
39:05
Speaker 2: Growing up to the Northwest. So bec was my guy?
39:08
Speaker 1: Really? I love that.
39:09
Speaker 2: I loved his presence, you know that.
39:11
Speaker 1: I think he would really love hearing that. Does he
39:13
Speaker 1: know that? Have you told me?
39:13
Speaker 2: I hope he does.
39:14
Speaker 3: I am a disciple of the Matt Hasselbeck Passing Academy.
39:19
Speaker 1: Okay, so this is a camp that he put on.
39:22
Speaker 2: Oh yeah he put on yep.
39:24
Speaker 3: I think I'm one of like two guys whoever got
39:26
Speaker 3: out of there that you know.
39:27
Speaker 2: Got to the NFL.
39:28
Speaker 3: But I was there, you know, Seneca Wallace was my
39:30
Speaker 3: camp counselor yeah, you know, and that was that was
39:34
Speaker 3: my guy. I loved his command, the way he's played,
39:37
Speaker 3: like the he was always having fun like that was
39:40
Speaker 3: the coolest thing to me. It was like, this is
39:41
Speaker 3: the NFL and this guy's just like smiling, having fun,
39:44
Speaker 3: loving this thing.
39:45
Speaker 1: Who is the biggest personality that you've come across in
39:48
Speaker 1: the NFL.
39:49
Speaker 2: Oh that's interesting.
39:51
Speaker 1: You can take that anywhere you want, the biggest alpha,
39:53
Speaker 1: the most hilarious, whoever it is.
39:56
Speaker 3: Yeah, that is a great question, and I got, Man,
40:00
Speaker 3: you can go a lot of different ways here.
40:02
Speaker 2: I think biggest personality, like Dez was so much fun.
40:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think because is you know, he's like a
40:08
Speaker 3: kid in the sense that when he was playing there,
40:10
Speaker 3: and I say that in the most positive way, like
40:12
Speaker 3: he just wanted to throw up, play catch.
40:14
Speaker 1: All day, just pure joy during warm ups. The trainers
40:19
Speaker 1: coming up to me at the Cowboys being like, we
40:20
Speaker 1: have to keep an eye on des because he gets
40:22
Speaker 1: so excited during warm ups. Like I love that there.
40:25
Speaker 3: I mean, he'll he'll grab every equipment guy, every like
40:27
Speaker 3: strength coach. He just wants to play catch the entire
40:30
Speaker 3: pregame and even during practice, like if the defense is
40:32
Speaker 3: going he's over there like hey, hey, come over here
40:34
Speaker 3: to the other field, like I just want I just
40:36
Speaker 3: want to run some routs and catch like and he
40:37
Speaker 3: just wants to catch all day long.
40:39
Speaker 2: And I thought it was so cool, Like it was
40:42
Speaker 2: the most fun. Uh. He truly just loved playing football.
40:46
Speaker 1: I love that. Do you have a good Jerry Jones
40:48
Speaker 1: story that's like I say, safe for but you know
40:51
Speaker 1: it does Jerry Jones story that we could all say
40:53
Speaker 1: that's pretty cool.
40:55
Speaker 3: Oh, I love Jerry I could think of two, probably
41:00
Speaker 3: one being for my first three or four years, he
41:02
Speaker 3: thought I was keeling, but I was the third string QB,
41:06
Speaker 3: so I something else say a word?
41:07
Speaker 2: So why would you even even.
41:09
Speaker 3: When I was first the uh, you know, I first
41:11
Speaker 3: got a chance to be the coordinator, I think I
41:12
Speaker 3: was still keeling at the time, but I wasn't gonna
41:14
Speaker 3: saying things I keeling everyone's while I was calling.
41:18
Speaker 1: Uh.
41:18
Speaker 2: But you know, you just kind of go with it,
41:20
Speaker 2: you know, like, hey, I'm.
41:21
Speaker 1: Going Jerry, Joe, I'm happy, I don't care. Yeah, yeah.
41:24
Speaker 3: And so in Dallas there was there tended to be
41:26
Speaker 3: a little bit of running joke of I was keeling,
41:28
Speaker 3: not killing. But you know, the other one I would
41:31
Speaker 3: think of was when we first got to the Star.
41:33
Speaker 3: This is probably twenty seventeen, they're eighteen, one of those
41:35
Speaker 3: one of those OTA times, And for people to understand
41:39
Speaker 3: the Star, there's a lot of commercial stuff going on
41:41
Speaker 3: around it as well as the football, right and so anyways,
41:45
Speaker 3: we're going through an OTA practice. Jason was the head
41:47
Speaker 3: coach at the time, and uh, the security officer, you know,
41:51
Speaker 3: the guy who kind of runs security there, Cable Johnson
41:53
Speaker 3: Apps And to come out and he's kind of waving
41:54
Speaker 3: Jason down in the middle of a practice like, hey,
41:57
Speaker 3: we got to move, we got to move and do
41:59
Speaker 3: the football team kind of like, and Jason has that
42:02
Speaker 3: dumb founder look like, what are you talking about? Like,
42:05
Speaker 3: we're in the middle of practices, I can We've got
42:06
Speaker 3: to move. The choppers come. The choppers coming, like straight
42:10
Speaker 3: out straight out of the movie. Everyone's kind of like, wait,
42:13
Speaker 3: so are we supposed to pause practice? And you see
42:15
Speaker 3: this chopper come. We've been around the buildings at the
42:19
Speaker 3: at the Star, and sure enough, here comes to chopper.
42:21
Speaker 3: It's got a lamb, it's got a lamd right on
42:23
Speaker 3: the field, and so everyone kind of cleared off. We
42:26
Speaker 3: had a nice little like extended water break. The chopper
42:28
Speaker 3: came through, got everyone where they needed to be, and
42:31
Speaker 3: then then practice resumed and so it was quite the experience.
42:35
Speaker 1: But that is so good.
42:37
Speaker 2: Yeah, I love it. You know. Jerry's Jerry's the absolute best.
42:40
Speaker 1: The biggest show in town. Man, it is, And I
42:43
Speaker 1: think he's still everyone what he does. The other owners
42:45
Speaker 1: still in a lot of ways still follow He's still
42:47
Speaker 1: the leader of that group, and of course the NFL,
42:49
Speaker 1: he's one of the biggest characters himself. My last question,
42:53
Speaker 1: your message to Chargers fans as we head to twenty
42:56
Speaker 1: twenty three and they're so excited. In fact, I was
42:58
Speaker 1: looking at a podcast. It's like the Lockdown Chargers podcast.
43:01
Speaker 1: It's like, are we too excited for Kellen Moore's offense?
43:04
Speaker 1: Like it's getting to that point. What would be your
43:05
Speaker 1: message for a fan base that is just so hungry
43:08
Speaker 1: for some success.
43:09
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we're just gonna have fun. We're just
43:11
Speaker 2: gonna go for it.
43:12
Speaker 3: I think that's the biggest thing that we're excited for
43:14
Speaker 3: is we got a group who can do do some
43:16
Speaker 3: really good things, and we're excited to build this thing
43:18
Speaker 3: for twenty twenty three. And so whatever that offense ends
43:21
Speaker 3: up looking like as we go through training camp.
43:23
Speaker 2: We'll build it however we need to. But you know,
43:26
Speaker 2: we're gonna be aggressive. We're going to go for it.
43:27
Speaker 1: I said in the monologue that there's an annual party
43:30
Speaker 1: out in the Hamptons in New York and it's thrown
43:33
Speaker 1: by Michael Rubin, who's the CEO of Fanatics, and the
43:35
Speaker 1: biggest stars in music and the biggest stars in the
43:38
Speaker 1: NBA go and every year there's a couple of NBA
43:40
Speaker 1: guys that make it. Would you say, Justin Herbert's probably
43:43
Speaker 1: not going to be at that.
43:43
Speaker 2: Party, probably not, Probably not Gene Oregon.
43:48
Speaker 1: He'll be a Eugene, Oregon watching fireworks from a far
43:51
Speaker 1: distance away thinking about football, which is probably a good thing.
43:55
Speaker 1: Kellen Moore, this was awesome. We appreciate you taking the time.
43:58
Speaker 1: You went forty minutes, went over time with us, and
44:00
Speaker 1: I can't say how excited I am enough for this
44:03
Speaker 1: Chargers offense with you and Herbert together, But I also
44:05
Speaker 1: know Brandon's quite well and thank you. Guys are going
44:07
Speaker 1: to be a great team as far as offensive coordinator
44:11
Speaker 1: slash head coach or offensive coordinator then him as the
44:13
Speaker 1: head coach. But I just thank you for coming on
44:15
Speaker 1: the podcast. It was really cool you're doing this.
44:17
Speaker 2: No appreciate it. Thanks Peter.
44:18
Speaker 1: That was awesome, Kellen Moore. Great if you're a Chargers fan,
44:22
Speaker 1: you got to come away from that thing just feeling
44:24
Speaker 1: confident that you're in competent hands and Justin herbertson a
44:28
Speaker 1: very good situation. To you guys, the listeners, Thanks so much.
44:32

44:35
Speaker 1: friends I don't think any other podcast is doing it
44:37
Speaker 1: the way we are. We're getting these guys that don't
44:40
Speaker 1: have to do it. They're doing it voluntarily. This isn't
44:42
Speaker 1: through an entire booking situation. These are me reaching out
44:46
Speaker 1: to these coaches and these gms and them agreeing to
44:48
Speaker 1: do it, and it's so appreciated. Kellen Moore is a
44:52
Speaker 1: great interview. He's also a great dad and leader of men.
44:55
Speaker 1: So I'm excited to see what they do in LA,
44:57
