- 0:12Speaker 1: folks on a high sports show on this Halloween day.
- 0:15Speaker 1: And you're going to go out trick or treating today
- 0:19Speaker 1: or you like me, you don't answer the door. On
- 0:24Speaker 1: today's show, we have local football annual rugby results. We
- 0:29Speaker 1: haven't got any hockey. They had a week off last week,
- 0:32Speaker 1: so we're having a running extra special show with reports
- 0:36Speaker 1: on the Folkston Senior and Junior Park run, the Ashford
- 0:44Speaker 1: ten and five miler and at Boochy Head last week
- 0:51Speaker 1: there was an ultra which is fifty k, a marathon,
- 0:56Speaker 1: a half marathon, a ten k wear loads of local
- 0:59Speaker 1: runners to part. And our special guest is Amy Seeger
- 1:06Speaker 1: who will be telling us all about her trip to
- 1:08Speaker 1: Iceland where she run a tin k. So let's get
- 1:16Speaker 1: this show on the road with a bit. I've been
- 1:18Speaker 1: hunting the playlist today for witchy type songs and I've
- 1:21Speaker 1: come up with this one is the Witch Queen of
- 1:23Speaker 1: the New Orleans. There we go to the Witch Queen
- 1:46Speaker 1: of New Orleans. That's setting the scene for today. I
- 1:53Speaker 1: mean it's Halloween today, So are you decorated? With pumpkins,
- 1:57Speaker 1: got them all over the place, have you They are everywhere?
- 2:00Speaker 1: And have you ever been pumpkin picking? I did once
- 2:04Speaker 1: took my partner SU's three grandchildren. We had this wheelbarrower
- 2:11Speaker 1: and well we would have gone home with about one
- 2:13Speaker 1: hundred pumpkins. I mean they put two in and I
- 2:18Speaker 1: took one out. So that's the sort of thing. Anyway,
- 2:21Speaker 1: let's talk about sport. We're joined in the studio now
- 2:24Speaker 1: by local athlete Amy Sega. Hello, Amy, how are you right?
- 2:28Speaker 1: Thank you good? Excellently good. It's so good of you
- 2:30Speaker 1: to come back. And this is so interested in this one.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I'll explain in a minute. So now, Amy, back in December,
- 2:37Speaker 1: yourself and Darren Scrivens came into the studio and told
- 2:40Speaker 1: us all about your you completely run in Ethiopia. Well,
- 2:44Speaker 1: since then, you've taken part in a ten k in
- 2:46Speaker 1: Rykavik in Iceland. Is that right?
- 2:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right.
- 2:49Speaker 1: It's a totally different environment, isn't it.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yeah, different temperature as well.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay, well, well we'll come onto that in a minute,
- 2:56Speaker 1: but we just tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 3:00Speaker 1: For me, you're an accomplished runner, and do you you know,
- 3:05Speaker 1: you take a lot of trophies. Was you always good
- 3:07Speaker 1: at running or was it just something that you came
- 3:09Speaker 1: into a little bit later in life.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I was quite good at running at school, but I
- 3:13Speaker 2: kind of lost motivation. I didn't enjoy pee towards the end,
- 3:17Speaker 2: and I just every now and then went back to
- 3:19Speaker 2: a bit of running, but didn't take it that seriously.
- 3:21Speaker 2: I didn't really have that much confidence in myself. And
- 3:24Speaker 2: then I started running a bit during COVID and started
- 3:27Speaker 2: to look for races and thought there must be like
- 3:30Speaker 2: clubs locally that I could join. So I started looking
- 3:32Speaker 2: into clubs and happened to bump into somebody who was
- 3:35Speaker 2: a member of South Kent Harriers. So she invited me along.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Oh great. So when you say COVID, I mean it's
- 3:40Speaker 1: only look four or five years ago really, so you're
- 3:43Speaker 1: quite a recent achiever. Yeah, well you had a little
- 3:49Speaker 1: hidden talent there that has been nurturing a way. So
- 3:53Speaker 1: you joined the club? Who did you join?
- 3:55Speaker 2: I joined South Kent Harriers.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Right, And I mean they're a lovely club. I know them,
- 3:59Speaker 1: you know them. They're a lovely bunch of people. And
- 4:02Speaker 1: so did you find you you know that you were
- 4:05Speaker 1: struggling to start with or did you kind of slip
- 4:08Speaker 1: in and keep up with everybody?
- 4:11Speaker 2: I think I kept up straight away with the group
- 4:12Speaker 2: that I was in, and everyone was really friendly and
- 4:15Speaker 2: I enjoyed having the structure of going twice a week
- 4:18Speaker 2: and joining them with training. And the more I did that,
- 4:21Speaker 2: the more I wanted to run.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, but you it's no secret now, but you've
- 4:26Speaker 1: developed even further now and you've changed clubs. Was there
- 4:30Speaker 1: any reason for that?
- 4:32Speaker 2: I just thought I need to have sort of more
- 4:35Speaker 2: people to be able to chase And I do miss
- 4:37Speaker 2: my old coach and I missed his training, but I
- 4:40Speaker 2: think it was time for me to move on.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean it's a lot of clubs
- 4:45Speaker 1: if you like, if you're bursting with vantergy and you've
- 4:49Speaker 1: got a lot of natural talent, then you can feel
- 4:53Speaker 1: that you've kind of peaked at that club, can't you.
- 4:55Speaker 1: And the Victories Ken, I know them from old They've
- 4:58Speaker 1: got a track and do you prefer running on the track?
- 5:01Speaker 2: Well?
- 5:02Speaker 1: Race? Do you race on the track with in Victor?
- 5:04Speaker 2: I have done this summer. I've done quite a few
- 5:07Speaker 2: three thousand meters, fifteen hundred meters and miles and a
- 5:09Speaker 2: couple of five thousand meters as well, which is a
- 5:12Speaker 2: new experience and I've enjoyed it, and I want to
- 5:15Speaker 2: get Peb's on the track as well, but I do
- 5:17Speaker 2: enjoy road more.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, good, okay, So moving onto the track if
- 5:23Speaker 1: you like, has it made a difference. I mean, let's
- 5:26Speaker 1: talk about injuries if you like. Since you you know,
- 5:29Speaker 1: you might be running a bit faster on the track,
- 5:31Speaker 1: have you picked up any injuries?
- 5:33Speaker 2: Not really, not on the track. I got an injury
- 5:36Speaker 2: doing cross country last year, but I think from what
- 5:39Speaker 2: my physio said, it was an injury that's waiting to
- 5:41Speaker 2: happen because I wasn't strong enough. But having had the
- 5:45Speaker 2: injury and known now how I can prevent that happening again,
- 5:48Speaker 2: I'm making sure i'm doing strength and conditioning as well
- 5:50Speaker 2: as going to the track.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, And I mean, have you found it
- 5:54Speaker 1: your times have got better since you've moved.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm getting a better five k time consistent. I'm
- 6:01Speaker 2: yet to see an improvement in a tame k, but
- 6:03Speaker 2: it should be coming hopefully.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Oh good. Yeah, yeah, it's funny. I remember I went
- 6:07Speaker 1: over to the track in Victory's Kent and there was
- 6:10Speaker 1: what they one year they did this thing called a
- 6:12Speaker 1: night of five k's. Does that mean anything? So basically
- 6:17Speaker 1: they you go along. Everybody knows they're going to run
- 6:20Speaker 1: a five k race, but you put in what time
- 6:23Speaker 1: you think you can do, so there might be five
- 6:25Speaker 1: or six races over the night, so the slower ones
- 6:28Speaker 1: do their five k at their chosen time. Anyway, as
- 6:31Speaker 1: we got on to the final five k, if you like,
- 6:35Speaker 1: I knew a couple of good road runners from Dover,
- 6:39Speaker 1: and this chap from Dover took the lead, and quite
- 6:44Speaker 1: a big lead as well. But someone said to me, look,
- 6:46Speaker 1: keep an eye on that one there in Victory's Kent
- 6:48Speaker 1: and he's got more experience on the track, and he
- 6:51Speaker 1: had more more savvy and very very slowly you picked
- 6:54Speaker 1: him off and he beat him. Yeah, so there is
- 6:56Speaker 1: there is a difference, isn't there to running on the track.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Quite I don't think.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Yeah. So so we've spoke about distances your training track
- 7:08Speaker 1: all road now. But the thing is at the weekend.
- 7:10Speaker 1: You did a race at the weekend, didn't you tell
- 7:12Speaker 1: us about?
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah? I did too. I did the Kent League cross
- 7:14Speaker 2: country on Saturday. I came sixth in Kent and I'm
- 7:17Speaker 2: currently third in the Kent League. And then on Sunday
- 7:20Speaker 2: I did the ashurand District five mile Halloween fancy dress.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Oh was it? Yeah, you're normally good at putting little
- 7:27Speaker 1: fancy dresses together.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Yeah, to use an old costume because I haven't had
- 7:30Speaker 2: time to mate one this year.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And I know the answers of this one.
- 7:34Speaker 1: But today listen, I said, did you get on in
- 7:35Speaker 1: the five mileer?
- 7:36Speaker 2: I won the five miler?
- 7:38Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 7:38Speaker 2: All right, yeah, and I think it was fifth overall.
- 7:42Speaker 1: You were I could tell you, I'll tell you. I'm
- 7:44Speaker 1: going to tell everybody late that actually you were fifth,
- 7:47Speaker 1: fifth lady in a time i've got down here of
- 7:50Speaker 1: thirty one twenty nine.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeahah, I put my predicted time in as thirty
- 7:54Speaker 2: one thirty Yeah, that's quite good.
- 7:56Speaker 1: A second people, yeah, second faster. Great. So let's switch
- 8:02Speaker 1: to no, let's keep talking about the five miler. So
- 8:06Speaker 1: what sort of we know it was like tarmac if
- 8:11Speaker 1: you like, but what was the course like Aulating?
- 8:14Speaker 2: It's sort of on country roads up and down and
- 8:19Speaker 2: there's a steep hill down and you go around the
- 8:21Speaker 2: cone and then back up the steep hill and then
- 8:23Speaker 2: it's sort of uphill almost the whole way back. Yeah,
- 8:26Speaker 2: but that's the third time I've done it, so I
- 8:28Speaker 2: was prepared.
- 8:28Speaker 1: You know, what to expect. Yeah, yeah, well, I think
- 8:30Speaker 1: it's very similar to I used to run the ten
- 8:33Speaker 1: k there, but we used to start at the sports
- 8:35Speaker 1: club just up the road. No, no, we used to
- 8:37Speaker 1: use the sports club sandy Hurst Lane as the headquarters.
- 8:40Speaker 1: But then we used to come down to that lane
- 8:43Speaker 1: where we start. But you had to finish in the
- 8:46Speaker 1: sports club, so as you came down the end of
- 8:48Speaker 1: that lane you did a right turn of just a
- 8:50Speaker 1: little bit of a slope. But but yeah, but before
- 8:54Speaker 1: the finish that there was a final hill, so road wise,
- 8:59Speaker 1: you got anything else was coming up?
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got two five miles in December. There's one
- 9:06Speaker 2: the than five mile, I think it might be the
- 9:08Speaker 2: first of December, and there's podium under the lights five
- 9:12Speaker 2: five mile in Basta Park. Oh well, yeah, so I'm hoping.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I'm hoping to go under thirty minutes in December. That's
- 9:19Speaker 2: my aim. Because we've been injured at start of the year.
- 9:21Speaker 2: I haven't actually achieved any of my aims for the year,
- 9:24Speaker 2: but I think I'd like to the five mile is
- 9:26Speaker 2: the one I'm most likely to get right.
- 9:28Speaker 1: So it might sound a little bit obvious, but is
- 9:32Speaker 1: your time for a five miler or any race effect
- 9:37Speaker 1: on the track faster than it is on the road.
- 9:39Speaker 2: My road five k is faster, just slightly. I think
- 9:44Speaker 2: seven seconds faster on the road than I am on
- 9:46Speaker 2: the track.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Oh really, that's funny. I thought it would have been
- 9:48Speaker 1: the other.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Way thing it normally is. But as you're saying, I
- 9:50Speaker 2: don't have the experience on the.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Track, Oh I see, yeah, lose.
- 9:54Speaker 2: It after after ten laps around you start to think
- 9:57Speaker 2: why am I doing this?
- 10:00Speaker 1: I mean, that's the other thing. When you see these
- 10:02Speaker 1: people at you know, high profile events at Crystal Palace
- 10:08Speaker 1: and things like that, and they've got to do fifteen laps,
- 10:10Speaker 1: you know, I think, oh, they must drive them back
- 10:12Speaker 1: the wall. But they're obviously trained for it and they're
- 10:15Speaker 1: ready to go. Okay, well, we're gonna have a little
- 10:17Speaker 1: break now and play a bit of music. Does music
- 10:21Speaker 1: play much of a part in your life or you're
- 10:23Speaker 1: sort of running or you know your preparation.
- 10:25Speaker 2: I do love music. I listen to music a lot.
- 10:27Speaker 2: I don't tend to listen to it when I'm running,
- 10:29Speaker 2: because I don't want to run to the beat of
- 10:31Speaker 2: the music, but I can sort of visualize music in
- 10:34Speaker 2: my head and I like to think of positive songs
- 10:36Speaker 2: when I'm running. I did that in a cross country
- 10:38Speaker 2: on Saturday. I had Bill with us in my head
- 10:40Speaker 2: the whole time getting me around.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I wish one were a lovely day, well.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Normally, but actually had lean on me in my head.
- 10:45Speaker 1: All right, excellent, Well you've chosen this one. So does
- 10:49Speaker 1: this one, do you know, get your going or.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Keep you focused to feel really positive?
- 10:55Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 10:55Speaker 2: And what is it? It's lucky man by.
- 10:57Speaker 1: The verb exactly, Liz Saba. Listen, that's the verb there.
- 11:29Speaker 1: And there was no stopping on Amy issues charging around
- 11:33Speaker 1: listening to that one. Excellent song. Okay, so we are
- 11:37Speaker 1: back in the studio with Amy and are you doing Amy?
- 11:40Speaker 1: You are right?
- 11:40Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 11:40Speaker 1: Okay, good, good, okay. And then last time you and
- 11:43Speaker 1: Darren come in was very interesting because you just come
- 11:47Speaker 1: back or not recently come back from Ethiopia. So just
- 11:51Speaker 1: briefly tell us what sort of experience you had running
- 11:55Speaker 1: at high altitude? What was that long?
- 11:58Speaker 2: It was quite difficult. We didn't know what it would
- 12:00Speaker 2: be like, but it's really hard to catch your breath
- 12:02Speaker 2: and you feel like you're going seven minute miling and
- 12:05Speaker 2: actually you look down at you're watching you were going
- 12:07Speaker 2: over eleven minute miling putting in the same effort.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it was.
- 12:11Speaker 2: It was amazing. There were elite athletes up there on
- 12:13Speaker 2: top of in Toto where they train. Just seeing them
- 12:15Speaker 2: run past it was incredible.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. And I mean but when you came back,
- 12:20Speaker 1: did you did you was your times? You know? Or
- 12:22Speaker 1: you felt like you was running fast?
- 12:24Speaker 2: I definitely felt like I was, but we weren't up
- 12:26Speaker 2: there long enough. I think it was just confidence from going.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Yeah. So I mean they talk about altitude training, but
- 12:31Speaker 1: do you look I mean, does it really make a
- 12:33Speaker 1: difference if you trained for a long time and then
- 12:35Speaker 1: you drop down too?
- 12:36Speaker 2: I think it.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's a bit of cheeky advantage really, Yeah.
- 12:39Speaker 2: And you can only get it if you're like sponsored
- 12:41Speaker 2: or you've got enough money to put in to go
- 12:43Speaker 2: into these places.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Yeah. Right, Okay, so when you were when you came
- 12:47Speaker 1: in last time, you did tell us that you were
- 12:50Speaker 1: hoping that Darren was looking at the flights. So if
- 12:53Speaker 1: I remember rightly, and to go to Iceland. But you've
- 12:57Speaker 1: done that now, so I don't know. Just tell us
- 13:00Speaker 1: a little bit about if you're like the whole trip.
- 13:02Speaker 1: I mean, so was it one flight? Do you fly
- 13:05Speaker 1: into recovic is it what they call it?
- 13:07Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just one flight from London to Recuvict.
- 13:10Speaker 1: So was it a package or someone to pick you up?
- 13:12Speaker 1: And what did you do your own thing?
- 13:13Speaker 2: We just did our own thing. We found somewhere to
- 13:16Speaker 2: stay that was like within walking distance off the start
- 13:19Speaker 2: of the race, and then we got there a couple
- 13:21Speaker 2: of days earlier and we could when we were just
- 13:23Speaker 2: having a jog, we could see where it started and finished,
- 13:26Speaker 2: so we could get prepared for that.
- 13:28Speaker 1: And what was the sort of climate like at the time.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Well, when we were looking into it, it was supposed
- 13:35Speaker 2: to be between sixteen to eighteen degrees and when we
- 13:38Speaker 2: got there, it was zero degrees. It was blowing a gale.
- 13:42Speaker 2: We had all these flags outside the hotel that just
- 13:44Speaker 2: wouldn't stop banging because of how strong the wind was.
- 13:48Speaker 1: And did you take sort of clothing expecting cold weather
- 13:52Speaker 1: just in case?
- 13:53Speaker 2: I did take layers. Yeah, but I looked at the
- 13:55Speaker 2: weather and I thought it's going to be warmer than
- 13:57Speaker 2: the than at five mile in December, so I won't
- 13:59Speaker 2: need a layers and I won't need a long vest
- 14:01Speaker 2: for the race. So I took my crop top. I
- 14:04Speaker 2: didn't take my arm sleeves. I did take gloves and
- 14:07Speaker 2: a headband just in case it was windy while we
- 14:09Speaker 2: were there, and I'm very glad that I did because
- 14:11Speaker 2: I wore them in the race.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, And I mean the course itself, was it
- 14:16Speaker 1: like out and back circular or did you hit the
- 14:18Speaker 1: wind one way?
- 14:19Speaker 2: And you know, luckily the wind had died down a
- 14:22Speaker 2: bit on the day of the race, you still got
- 14:24Speaker 2: a bit of the wind on one of the coastlines
- 14:26Speaker 2: because it was almost i'd say a circular route, but
- 14:29Speaker 2: it wasn't a circle, if you see what I mean.
- 14:31Speaker 2: And it went along to coastlines, so you did get
- 14:33Speaker 2: the wind at certain bits. But it was quite a good,
- 14:37Speaker 2: quite a flat course. I was amazed, really because I've
- 14:39Speaker 2: been directed before and I didn't remember it being flat.
- 14:41Speaker 2: But it's just along the seafront and there were a
- 14:44Speaker 2: few sort of inclines.
- 14:46Speaker 1: And was it I mean, is it a big race
- 14:49Speaker 1: or is it just like another club race.
- 14:51Speaker 2: It was a huge race. That the biggest race I've
- 14:53Speaker 2: ever done. Yeah, it had an expo as well, which
- 14:56Speaker 2: I've never experienced before, But that was that was really good.
- 15:00Speaker 2: In the ten k there were nearly six thousand people,
- 15:04Speaker 2: but because there was a marathon and half marathon at
- 15:06Speaker 2: the same time, there were nearly ten thousand.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Oh right, so difficult to manage, you know when you
- 15:11Speaker 1: think of the club races, you know, like five hundred,
- 15:15Speaker 1: five hundred is quite good these days, and you know
- 15:18Speaker 1: all the effort that goes into and then to you know,
- 15:21Speaker 1: to turn up at a race in this tenth and different
- 15:23Speaker 1: distances as well. So the organization, how was there plenty
- 15:28Speaker 1: of toilets?
- 15:29Speaker 2: Yeah, there were enough. We didn't have any problem finding
- 15:31Speaker 2: a toilet at the start. I was a bit worried
- 15:33Speaker 2: about it, but that there were enough and they were
- 15:35Speaker 2: just near the start of the race as well.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Right, So any differences, you know, I mean, was there
- 15:41Speaker 1: Like what can I say the athletes themselves? Were they
- 15:46Speaker 1: Do you think they were Icelandic a lot of them?
- 15:48Speaker 1: Or were they?
- 15:48Speaker 2: You can see on the results which country all the
- 15:51Speaker 2: athletes are from, and there was there were quite a
- 15:54Speaker 2: lot of Icelandic athletes, but there were also people from
- 15:57Speaker 2: all over the world.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, many Brits, quite a lot. Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:02Speaker 2: We looked into it thinking going on last year's results,
- 16:05Speaker 2: we'd both come away with a trophy and Nie of
- 16:07Speaker 2: us did, but Darren was second in his age category,
- 16:10Speaker 2: and yeah, the person that beating was British.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Oh really, did you have a good race with you
- 16:17Speaker 1: for the other time? Yeah.
- 16:19Speaker 2: I felt like it was going well to about eight
- 16:21Speaker 2: and a half k, and then I did start to
- 16:23Speaker 2: struggle a bit.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Was it the cold get into you or was
- 16:26Speaker 1: it just sort of you know, every sort of metch
- 16:29Speaker 1: run day, you know, it's just one of those days.
- 16:31Speaker 2: I think it was just one of those days. And
- 16:33Speaker 2: I've struggled a bit getting back to sort of my
- 16:35Speaker 2: good ten k times since being injured. And I started
- 16:38Speaker 2: it thinking I was going to go really well, and
- 16:41Speaker 2: then when it started to not go as well, then
- 16:42Speaker 2: I started to worry a little bit.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, Okay, do you worry, But do you
- 16:46Speaker 1: get nervous when you're on the start line.
- 16:48Speaker 2: I get incredibly nervous. Yea, and the day before too.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Yeah. I know runners, the club runners that have stopped
- 16:54Speaker 1: running because or entering races because they get so nervous,
- 16:57Speaker 1: so you wouldn't think so, would you, And they may
- 17:00Speaker 1: sue she did. She did the how it's five k.
- 17:07Speaker 1: She's been running for years. She was across country champion
- 17:09Speaker 1: when she was sixteen. And she said, oh, I couldn't
- 17:13Speaker 1: sleep last night. I was so nervous for you're only
- 17:15Speaker 1: running around the zoo ground.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Get an upset stomach before a park run, do youeah?
- 17:19Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, oh there was a cracking park run on Saturday.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I've got a till I send my script for later.
- 17:26Speaker 1: But it's the Donospoort. It's just hit. So this trip
- 17:31Speaker 1: to Iceland it was a bit more than just a run.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Did you make her a nice holiday out of it?
- 17:35Speaker 2: Yeah? We did. I think it's the only time we
- 17:37Speaker 2: can get a holiday is if it's slight, if it
- 17:40Speaker 2: involves running. So we've got a bit of a holiday
- 17:42Speaker 2: around the race, right.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Because the problem that you have, and many people like yourself,
- 17:46Speaker 1: you are a teacher, so first of all, it's been
- 17:50Speaker 1: hard to get hold of you. And because it's half
- 17:52Speaker 1: term and I'm so pleased you could come in. So
- 17:54Speaker 1: you have to have your holidays in term time. Yeah yeah, yeah, no,
- 18:00Speaker 1: in holidays out of time. Yeah, yeah, all right, do
- 18:04Speaker 1: you get fined if you have a holiday as a teacher.
- 18:07Speaker 2: They can't just can't do that.
- 18:09Speaker 1: It's not an option, right, Okay, so let's not get
- 18:14Speaker 1: into trouble with the school. So yeah, tell us about
- 18:18Speaker 1: what else you did on holiday and you get do
- 18:20Speaker 1: you have do you make your own sight seeing trips?
- 18:22Speaker 1: You know, book on trips or yeah?
- 18:23Speaker 2: I booked us onto a couple of trips. So we
- 18:25Speaker 2: did the Golden Circle tour and the coach and we
- 18:27Speaker 2: went to the place where the two tectonic plates meet
- 18:31Speaker 2: and you can see in the geography where they're moving apart.
- 18:35Speaker 2: We saw the famous I don't have pronouncing geezers, guys.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Were they dodgy? Well, they dodgy a few.
- 18:43Speaker 2: We saw a glassier from a distance and gold us
- 18:47Speaker 2: famous waterfall. And we also went on a whale watching
- 18:49Speaker 2: tour and we did actually see a huntback whales. That
- 18:52Speaker 2: made the whole trip for me.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Really Yeah, do they get close or did they obviously
- 18:55Speaker 1: stay away?
- 18:56Speaker 2: I think the boat that we were on they were
- 18:58Speaker 2: really respectful of the whales and gave a lot of distance.
- 19:00Speaker 2: But some of the other boats chased the whales and
- 19:02Speaker 2: they were quite close, but I felt more comfortable on
- 19:05Speaker 2: the tour that we were on.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Yeah, that's nice. Yeah. And what about the language out there?
- 19:10Speaker 1: Have they've got their own language? Yeah?
- 19:12Speaker 2: They do.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Do many of them speak English at all?
- 19:14Speaker 2: Yeah? Everybody speaks English.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it's in fact, it's like it's like Finland. When
- 19:20Speaker 1: I was in Finland many years ago and the people
- 19:24Speaker 1: that we were working with said, if you want any
- 19:26Speaker 1: would you want to know anything Oscar school child? They'll
- 19:28Speaker 1: speak English. Yeah. Yeah. So have you got any other
- 19:33Speaker 1: trips lined up? Was there anything else that's kind of
- 19:36Speaker 1: tickling your fancy for another country? Something different? You know?
- 19:39Speaker 1: Because a lot of runners that I know and you
- 19:41Speaker 1: know as well, Amy, we'll go for the big city
- 19:44Speaker 1: marathons and will mix city runs that they used to
- 19:48Speaker 1: do marathons, say Lot, Berlin or Paris Sambur But they
- 19:51Speaker 1: now started doing that the half marathons in the ten
- 19:54Speaker 1: k's and the numbers have just gone up through the roof.
- 19:56Speaker 1: But Ethiopia and Iceland are certainly a little bit different.
- 19:59Speaker 1: So thing else play.
- 20:01Speaker 2: It's hard to find ten k's in other countries because,
- 20:03Speaker 2: like you said, marathons are sort of more popular. There's
- 20:07Speaker 2: one ten k that I found that is in my
- 20:09Speaker 2: school holidays and that's in Helsinki next August, so that
- 20:13Speaker 2: might be an option hel Sinky.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Yeah, right, so that's in Finland. That sounds very self
- 20:19Speaker 1: tip of Finland, isn't it somewhere in Finland? Yeah?
- 20:22Speaker 2: But I think that's right.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Well, as I was telling you, for I went to
- 20:25Speaker 1: Finland many many years ago, but I was right up
- 20:28Speaker 1: the other end as right at the Arctic Circle working
- 20:30Speaker 1: on cars when it was out there for about six
- 20:33Speaker 1: weeks and temperature did didn't get above mare than twenty
- 20:38Speaker 1: so okay. So the organization of the run, the steps
- 20:45Speaker 1: you have to go through in Iceland, was it on
- 20:47Speaker 1: a par with English? Was it easier?
- 20:49Speaker 2: Yeah? It was really easy, was it?
- 20:51Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah?
- 20:52Speaker 2: Signed up online and then they sent details of where
- 20:55Speaker 2: we needed to be.
- 20:56Speaker 1: And what about things simple little things like paying for it,
- 20:59Speaker 1: you know, trans for the money and you know it's
- 21:01Speaker 1: always little problems that you come up are going to
- 21:04Speaker 1: That was all, okay, that's fine.
- 21:06Speaker 2: It said the price in icelandic coroner, and then I
- 21:08Speaker 2: just searched up what that would be in pounds in
- 21:10Speaker 2: Google and then when you pay it takes it in
- 21:13Speaker 2: Icelandic Corona. But you can see in your bank statement.
- 21:17Speaker 1: It's silly little things like that that, you know, make
- 21:19Speaker 1: you wonder. Me and Sue are going to Berlin in January,
- 21:27Speaker 1: and I'm getting a little bit tense about it because
- 21:30Speaker 1: we're doing our own thing. We're not on a package
- 21:32Speaker 1: or anything. We're going to see going to a chaps
- 21:34Speaker 1: see chap called Andre Rue in a concert. But I
- 21:38Speaker 1: worry a little bit about getting around Berlin.
- 21:40Speaker 2: And it's really easy to get around burly.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Have you done it?
- 21:43Speaker 2: Yeah, my degrees in German, but a lot of most
- 21:46Speaker 2: Germans speak pervate English.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Public transport is really good.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Oh that's what. That's what I'm interested in, public anywhere.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Oh great, that's great. Oh good's I'm relieved about that.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Now before we go, is it any any thank yous,
- 22:02Speaker 1: anything happened lately, or any mentions, any hellos as anyone
- 22:05Speaker 1: that's listening in.
- 22:06Speaker 2: I always like to thank Margaret Connelly because she's a
- 22:09Speaker 2: great inspiration and helped me and other friends from stuff
- 22:14Speaker 2: can Harris, Kevin Southern and Becky Young. When I've had
- 22:18Speaker 2: when I've had a bit of a difficult time of
- 22:19Speaker 2: being injured. This year they've been there and had ideas
- 22:22Speaker 2: for me today.
- 22:23Speaker 1: And yeah, lovely people.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Yeah, honestly, if I didn't have Darren, I wouldn't probably
- 22:28Speaker 2: well I probably would be doing all of this but
- 22:29Speaker 2: by myself, and it's much more enjoyed.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, great, Okay, Amy, thank you so much for
- 22:35Speaker 1: coming in. I'm glad we finally got hold of you.
- 22:38Speaker 1: But if you do get to hell Sinky, then we're
- 22:41Speaker 1: going to have to book you in to another half
- 22:44Speaker 1: term and come and tell us all about it. Okay,
- 22:47Speaker 1: thanks Amy. Okay, we've got another song now, and now
- 22:50Speaker 1: I must have been I haven't heard this one before,
- 22:53Speaker 1: but I put it in our search in the playlist
- 22:57Speaker 1: and I've come up with This one is by XTC.
- 23:01Speaker 1: He's called The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead. Well, there we go.
- 23:19Speaker 1: That's the first for everyone. I think that was the
- 23:21Speaker 1: Ballad of Pieter Pumpkinhead. And you know what, I did
- 23:24Speaker 1: google it and just now find out a bit about it.
- 23:27Speaker 1: And it's sung by XTC. It's about an influential figure
- 23:31Speaker 1: who is loved by the people but hated by the government.
- 23:34Speaker 1: He promotes peace, love, fairness and giving, and his opposition
- 23:39Speaker 1: ultimately murders him for it. So nothing to do with Halloween,
- 23:43Speaker 1: but there we go as the first for everybody. Right,
- 23:47Speaker 1: Let's do some sport and it's time for a bit
- 23:49Speaker 1: of the local football scene. Folks in a Victor traveled
- 23:52Speaker 1: to Barton Rovers last week which is near Luton, and
- 23:55Speaker 1: came away with the three nil win in the FA
- 23:57Speaker 1: Trophy plus prize money of three pound in the drawer.
- 24:02Speaker 1: On the Monday they were drawn against a home fixture
- 24:05Speaker 1: against a team called Hanwell Town which would be played
- 24:08Speaker 1: on Saturday, the sixteenth November. Hanwell play their games at
- 24:12Speaker 1: the Power Day Stadium and Greenford in West London, so
- 24:15Speaker 1: not too far from to come to come down to Folkston.
- 24:18Speaker 1: They are currently fifteenth in the Southern League Premier South
- 24:21Speaker 1: Division and the price money at stake here is three
- 24:24Speaker 1: thy seven hundred and fifty pounds for the winners and
- 24:27Speaker 1: one thousand pounds for the losers. This Saturday in Victor
- 24:30Speaker 1: are away at Cole Shorton Now Folcus in Victor A
- 24:34Speaker 1: Ladies team beat Rams gave one nil at home on
- 24:36Speaker 1: Sunday and again they've got another game this Sunday. It's
- 24:40Speaker 1: in the Betshang it's against Betsanger Welfare in the is
- 24:44Speaker 1: in a group cup the Southeast County's Women's Football League
- 24:49Speaker 1: if toown had to find three neil home win against
- 24:51Speaker 1: lance In keeping them out of the relegation zone, but
- 24:54Speaker 1: they have two tough away games coming up. Saturday they
- 24:57Speaker 1: travel to deal Town, then Tuesday to Bay hawkishdown beat
- 25:01Speaker 1: Sporting Club Thamesmead Reserves by three goals to one. After
- 25:05Speaker 1: conceding an early goal, they turned it around and goals
- 25:08Speaker 1: were shared out between Sammy Carpenter, Josh Byford and Joe Roberts.
- 25:12Speaker 1: But it couldn't have been an easy game, especially when
- 25:15Speaker 1: the Hawkings goalie was awarded Man of the match. Sam
- 25:18Speaker 1: Hignette was on top four making several saves and even
- 25:21Speaker 1: double saves and it sounds like he deserved that honor.
- 25:24Speaker 1: So well done here gee. This week is back to
- 25:27Speaker 1: cup action in the Interriginal Challenge Cup when they welcome CHILLAMFC,
- 25:32Speaker 1: who are sixth in Division one Central and South and
- 25:35Speaker 1: Central and East. The New Romney stay top of the
- 25:38Speaker 1: table after beating snod And Town Reserves two to one,
- 25:42Speaker 1: and this Saturday they remain in a league action when
- 25:44Speaker 1: they traveled to Eltham in Southeast London to play a
- 25:48Speaker 1: Metro Gas who are fourteenth out of seventeen teams. Now
- 25:53Speaker 1: there's a couple of little things I want to tell
- 25:54Speaker 1: you about which came my way. On Sunday, the first
- 25:59Speaker 1: of Deces, there is a new run running race on
- 26:03Speaker 1: the calendar. But it's it's the sort of race you
- 26:05Speaker 1: can It's a five k round your walk stroll and
- 26:11Speaker 1: it's organized by south Kent Mind. Now if you fancy
- 26:15Speaker 1: taking part in Sunday, December, the first registration opens at
- 26:20Speaker 1: ten thirty. There's a warm up at eleven fifty and
- 26:23Speaker 1: the race starts at twelve o'clock and I should be
- 26:26Speaker 1: on the mic compare in the day. So the run
- 26:29Speaker 1: is making raising funds for South Kent Mind and as
- 26:33Speaker 1: south Kent Mind are supporting and I love this a
- 26:36Speaker 1: mental elf. Please come dressed as an elf or anything
- 26:39Speaker 1: festive of course, and if you're a local business you
- 26:42Speaker 1: might want to sponsor the event in some shape or form.
- 26:45Speaker 1: So if you want to find out more about this race,
- 26:49Speaker 1: Like I say, it's not a race, it's just a
- 26:51Speaker 1: bit way of dressing up at Christmas, having a bit
- 26:54Speaker 1: of fun. And the schools have been joined have been
- 26:58Speaker 1: asked to join. Sorry, and we'd love to see loads
- 27:01Speaker 1: of schools. If your school is if your child comes
- 27:04Speaker 1: home with it used to be a note for your mum,
- 27:06Speaker 1: but it's probably an email now saying about this race.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Then please please, we'd love you to come along. Now
- 27:13Speaker 1: the first point for any information about South Kent mind,
- 27:17Speaker 1: please go to their Facebook page. Now, a few weeks
- 27:22Speaker 1: ago I told you about a friend of mine, Colin Hayden.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Now Colin took up the challenge of running in October
- 27:28Speaker 1: for prostate cancer research. Now, as I said to you
- 27:31Speaker 1: last time, Colin at the time I left your a
- 27:35Speaker 1: tunnel a few years ago and hadn't seen him for
- 27:37Speaker 1: a while, but he wasn't built for running. But he's
- 27:40Speaker 1: put this challenge on and he's done absolutely a fantastic job.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Now his target was to run fifty miles during the month,
- 27:48Speaker 1: and today was his last day. So he has raised
- 27:52Speaker 1: five hundred and fifty pound, sorry, five hundred and thirty
- 27:56Speaker 1: pound of his two hundred and fifty pound targets, over
- 28:00Speaker 1: two hundred percent of what he set out to do.
- 28:02Speaker 1: So how good is that? So wor I'm Colin, and
- 28:06Speaker 1: all I can say is just keep up the running,
- 28:07Speaker 1: don't let it go. You don't have to run every
- 28:10Speaker 1: time for a cause, but you probably felt now as
- 28:12Speaker 1: the end of the month, you felt the benefits, so
- 28:15Speaker 1: please keep it up and massive well done to you.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Right time for bit of music now and we've got
- 28:20Speaker 1: Meeka and Grace Kelly. I want to talk to you.
- 28:25Speaker 1: The last time we talked, mister Smith, he reduced me again.
- 28:32Speaker 1: You do have a bazoo maqueezes as the Meka and
- 28:38Speaker 1: Grace Kelly. We okay, it's swiftly moving on there because
- 28:47Speaker 1: you've got a lot to get through. And if I
- 28:48Speaker 1: can't get through most of this that I've got on
- 28:51Speaker 1: my schedule here, don't forget. I'll be co hosting with
- 28:55Speaker 1: ad Dowks on on Saturday. Yeah, time for turn out,
- 29:00Speaker 1: attention to run in. So it was a busy weekend
- 29:04Speaker 1: for local athletes, with several heading off to Ashford and
- 29:07Speaker 1: Beachy Head in Eastbourne. I was on the mic at
- 29:10Speaker 1: the Bedgbury half and ten k trail runs, which attracted
- 29:14Speaker 1: over five hundred and forty runners, many coming from all
- 29:17Speaker 1: over the country, but I didn't see any local faces there,
- 29:21Speaker 1: so they must have probably all been at Beejehead or Ashford.
- 29:24Speaker 1: The Ashford ten and five miler attracted a total of
- 29:27Speaker 1: two hundred and seventy one runners. Star of the day
- 29:30Speaker 1: was our guest who we just spoke to, Amy Seeger.
- 29:32Speaker 1: She was fifth place in the overall in the five miler,
- 29:36Speaker 1: but she was the first lady home in a time
- 29:39Speaker 1: of thirty one minutes twenty nine seconds. Other local athletes
- 29:42Speaker 1: were Kirsty Wilson, she was twelfth thirty five eleven and
- 29:46Speaker 1: Vicki's got fifteenth in thirty six ten. Sarah Nunn was
- 29:51Speaker 1: forty three minutes fifty three seconds and Nick Hilditch was
- 29:57Speaker 1: fifty three thirty. McCarthy ran the ten miler in one
- 30:02Speaker 1: hour and nine minutes twenty five seconds. Now, if I
- 30:05Speaker 1: didn't get all the you local people, I do apologize.
- 30:08Speaker 1: There were so many, and I did a lot of
- 30:10Speaker 1: duck in the divings trying to find out who was who.
- 30:13Speaker 1: But now the one that runners race that people just
- 30:17Speaker 1: keep going back to despite being so difficult is in
- 30:20Speaker 1: Beachy Head. Now the stage an ultra that's a fifty k,
- 30:25Speaker 1: which is thirty five miles they do they do the
- 30:27Speaker 1: marathon course, then they go back and do the ten
- 30:30Speaker 1: k course. So they did that on the Saturday and
- 30:34Speaker 1: then a half marathon on a Sunday. Now this day
- 30:38Speaker 1: attracts over fifteen hundred runners. Now once again I've done
- 30:41Speaker 1: my best to pick out a local runners, so I
- 30:43Speaker 1: do apologize if I've left Joe out. So let's crack
- 30:46Speaker 1: on and start with the Ultra from the Folkston Club.
- 30:49Speaker 1: A former guest of the show and a part run
- 30:52Speaker 1: run director Trevor Devout did five hours fifty one, Jason
- 30:56Speaker 1: king At six nineteen and Ron Bell six twenty one.
- 31:00Speaker 1: It's from South Kent Harrier's Craig Hoveman he did six
- 31:03Speaker 1: hours ten minutes and the marathon times I found were
- 31:08Speaker 1: Karen Quinn and Kate Clipstone did seven hours thirty three
- 31:13Speaker 1: and seven hours thirty six, but they also went back
- 31:16Speaker 1: the next day and did a half marathon. Melanroyd Powell
- 31:21Speaker 1: did the marathons seven o four, Phil and Jenny Heathfield
- 31:24Speaker 1: did five point fifty one. First marathon for Debbie Palmerter
- 31:28Speaker 1: six thirty two, Jane Wren did seven o three and
- 31:31Speaker 1: coming in together at eight hours and nineteen minutes was
- 31:35Speaker 1: Jason Crockford, Neil Sutcliffe Adams and Roy Atkins. Another Boonker's
- 31:41Speaker 1: runner was Gary Barnes. He run the marathon on the
- 31:43Speaker 1: Saturday and the half on the Sunday. Michelle Barnes and
- 31:47Speaker 1: Tanya Johnson helped Tom McLeod to his very very first marathon,
- 31:50Speaker 1: and what a tough one for the first one. So
- 31:52Speaker 1: we're on to you. Tom. Cassie Sinclair run the half
- 31:56Speaker 1: in two hours twenty six and in the ten k
- 31:58Speaker 1: Collett windsor one hour and eleven minutes with Kirstin Muller
- 32:02Speaker 1: and Rebecca Edwards crossing the line together and one hour's
- 32:06Speaker 1: thirty one. Now, it is a really, really tough event,
- 32:09Speaker 1: but as you can tell by the times, people don't
- 32:12Speaker 1: take too much of an effort. It's not a personal
- 32:14Speaker 1: best course and they obviously all had a lot of
- 32:18Speaker 1: fun running around that one, I'll tell you. So we've
- 32:21Speaker 1: got two more reports coming up, the Folks and Park
- 32:24Speaker 1: Run Senior Park Run. We'll start with that. First. Two
- 32:27Speaker 1: hundred and ninety two runners finished the Senior Folks and
- 32:30Speaker 1: Park Run in beautiful conditions on the leaves on Saturday morning. Now,
- 32:35Speaker 1: this to me was one of the most exciting finishes
- 32:37Speaker 1: in the ten years I've been watching Park Run. Nazredine
- 32:41Speaker 1: Harlan and Emily Davis. I think Emily was a tourist.
- 32:44Speaker 1: I never found out where she came from, but Nazadene
- 32:47Speaker 1: is a local lad They were neck and neck all
- 32:50Speaker 1: the way round, with Naz doing all the work in
- 32:52Speaker 1: front and Emily looking very comfortable breathing down his neck.
- 32:56Speaker 1: I thought she was weighing for a moment to pounce
- 32:59Speaker 1: and get by, but as they got to the closer
- 33:02Speaker 1: to the finish line, Nas pulled away, beaten Emily by
- 33:05Speaker 1: just five seconds, both going in PBS and Emily breaking
- 33:09Speaker 1: the course record for ladies in a time of seventeen
- 33:12Speaker 1: minutes twenty four seconds. Now, the previous fastest that I
- 33:15Speaker 1: could find was eighteen minutes twenty one seconds, so that's
- 33:21Speaker 1: just about a minute off the previous record. Nas His
- 33:26Speaker 1: time of seventeen minutes and nineteen seconds was quick, but
- 33:29Speaker 1: Charlie Brisley has run that course is fast as time
- 33:32Speaker 1: I found was fifteen eight so that is exceptional anyway.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Having said that, the times for nearly all the runners
- 33:39Speaker 1: are irrelevant except that you might want to beat your
- 33:42Speaker 1: own time from the week before. It's not for everybody.
- 33:45Speaker 1: It's not all about getting times it's just about getting
- 33:49Speaker 1: out in the open air, having a chat and having
- 33:52Speaker 1: a good old run and obviously staying fit and healthy
