- 1:40Speaker 5: On this episode, I have two brothers who starve their
- 1:42Speaker 5: careers in video production fifteen years ago as kids making
- 1:46Speaker 5: home videos in their family's backyard. One does a lot
- 1:50Speaker 5: of the producing, one does a lot of the cinematography,
- 1:52Speaker 5: and that's a good team to have. Their credits include
- 1:57Speaker 5: producer and first assistant director for the feature film Apple
- 2:00Speaker 5: of My Eye starring Burt Reynolds and Amy Smart. And
- 2:03Speaker 5: they also teach a hell of a lot of awesome
- 2:05Speaker 5: seminars about making your first film for a few thousand
- 2:09Speaker 5: dollars on thousand dollars two thousand dollars with guests Brian
- 2:12Speaker 5: and Jake Cholbert, the Jolbert Brothers.
- 2:15Speaker 6: Well, so I'm gonna take I'm gonna take it back
- 2:17Speaker 6: a little bit The first time we started going full
- 2:21Speaker 6: time was when we started, actually Jake with an entertainment
- 2:27Speaker 6: company called Iris Entertainment. That was kind of like the
- 2:30Speaker 6: first inkling of it. And Jake's actually does video full time.
- 2:36Speaker 4: I don't.
- 2:37Speaker 6: I have a construction company, so therefore I'm doing that
- 2:42Speaker 6: and I'm doing this at the same time. So Jake
- 2:45Speaker 6: actually is the one actually more full time. He does video,
- 2:47Speaker 6: full time, editing, all that good stuff. But I would
- 2:50Speaker 6: say back in what two thousand and eight or nine.
- 2:54Speaker 7: Two thousand and nine, we started a company, yeah, called
- 2:56Speaker 7: Iris Entertainment where there was four of us. I did video,
- 2:58Speaker 7: there's you know, some guys in DJA and photography. But
- 3:02Speaker 7: really what I think the question you're really asking is,
- 3:04Speaker 7: you know, when do we dive in and start realizing
- 3:07Speaker 7: that we could actually maybe help some people. And because
- 3:10Speaker 7: we've been through a couple projects and different things, and
- 3:13Speaker 7: from the Fugal filmmaker and looking at people talking to
- 3:15Speaker 7: different filmmakers, you hear different stories and it's like, oh,
- 3:19Speaker 7: you know, if you if you just knew this, I
- 3:22Speaker 7: think you could this would help you.
- 3:24Speaker 6: And that pretty much started.
- 3:25Speaker 7: I would say, uh January, Yeah, so we've been doing
- 3:28Speaker 7: it in about a year.
- 3:29Speaker 6: Yeah. And the thing about us too, man, is it's
- 3:32Speaker 6: not about really teaching per Se in the typical way
- 3:35Speaker 6: of saying, hey, this is the way you should do something,
- 3:39Speaker 6: But it's more of documenting our journey per Se, what
- 3:42Speaker 6: we're doing, some of the things that helped us and marry,
- 3:46Speaker 6: some of the mistakes that we've made, and and and
- 3:49Speaker 6: try to do options. See. The problem I see is
- 3:53Speaker 6: there's all these old ideals going on right within the
- 3:56Speaker 6: film community and the film ways of doing things. Nobody's
- 4:01Speaker 6: really i should say, nobody is doing it, but people
- 4:04Speaker 6: need to start experimenting. It's it's it's there's new ways
- 4:07Speaker 6: of doing things. There's ultimately gonna be new people that
- 4:12Speaker 6: are going to be coming out and maybe making it
- 4:15Speaker 6: in those new ways. So figuring out whether it's making
- 4:20Speaker 6: episodic and going and putting on Facebook. Facebook not Facebook Live,
- 4:25Speaker 6: but they got a Facebook Watch now, And there's so
- 4:28Speaker 6: many different avenues that we need to start, i think,
- 4:32Speaker 6: really opening up to and figuring out how to make
- 4:34Speaker 6: it work for the film community. If that makes sense.
- 4:37Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, that makes total sense. Any and you know
- 4:40Speaker 8: you mentioned Facebook too, because with all the ways of
- 4:42Speaker 8: distribution and stuff, now you know, you have to take
- 4:45Speaker 8: it account all the social media aspects. And then they
- 4:47Speaker 8: all got into video now and now I mean this
- 4:50Speaker 8: is kind of sort of getting away from we're talking
- 4:52Speaker 8: about in a way. But I just saw that WWE
- 4:56Speaker 8: is going to start doing live events on Facebook and
- 5:00Speaker 8: which is what I thought was gonna happen, where you're
- 5:02Speaker 8: gonna start seeing like TV shows or and more sports
- 5:05Speaker 8: and stuff like that. They're not going to count on
- 5:08Speaker 8: you for Nielsen ratings and watching it through your TV.
- 5:10Speaker 8: They're going to count on you watching it on your
- 5:11Speaker 8: phone through Facebook.
- 5:13Speaker 7: Well, if you think about it, they're going to miss
- 5:15Speaker 7: the boat if they don't. You know, it's like it
- 5:17Speaker 7: is the thing, you know what I'm saying. It is
- 5:20Speaker 7: the thing.
- 5:21Speaker 6: Like like I don't know if you listen to the
- 5:22Speaker 6: Gary Vee anyway, Yeah, if you really listen to those guys.
- 5:26Speaker 6: And the thing about film community is you can't get
- 5:29Speaker 6: stuck in the film community. Ways what are other people
- 5:31Speaker 6: doing and how can we make that work?
- 5:34Speaker 4: You know?
- 5:35Speaker 6: Gary v likes to say, you know, take advantage of
- 5:39Speaker 6: the situation that's going on and really see where the
- 5:42Speaker 6: attention is and like where ultimately, where's people? Where are
- 5:46Speaker 6: people eyeballs. It's on Facebook, it's it's on the social media.
- 5:49Speaker 6: It's not in the theaters like it used to be.
- 5:51Speaker 6: And now, don't give you wrong, theaters will always be there,
- 5:54Speaker 6: and theaters are great. And you know, I love to
- 5:56Speaker 6: have my movie. You know, I've had a movie played
- 5:59Speaker 6: in theater, but it was you know, we four walled it.
- 6:01Speaker 6: But if if you you know, if you actually having
- 6:05Speaker 6: a company get it there and having a wide release,
- 6:07Speaker 6: that's that's phenomenal. But that's not the only way, you know,
- 6:11Speaker 6: and that's not the only way to make it work.
- 6:12Speaker 6: You know, it's figuring out how to make it work.
- 6:14Speaker 8: I feel, yeah, exactly, you know. And you know, as
- 6:19Speaker 8: you talk about doing this like full time, just to
- 6:20Speaker 8: take a step back, you know that that's sort of
- 6:23Speaker 8: the crux, isn't it. You know, that's sort of the
- 6:25Speaker 8: big question that a lot of filmmakers have, whether they're
- 6:27Speaker 8: you know, twenties or thirties or forties or what have you. It's,
- 6:31Speaker 8: you know, how do I make a How do I
- 6:32Speaker 8: become a full time filmmaker? You know, how do I
- 6:34Speaker 8: make my movie? Well at the same time working a
- 6:36Speaker 8: day job so I don't go crazy trying to do both,
- 6:39Speaker 8: you know, and so you you've actually started to do that,
- 6:42Speaker 8: So like, well, what was some of the steps you
- 6:44Speaker 8: took though to to sort of just say, you know what,
- 6:46Speaker 8: I don't want to work in an office or do whatever.
- 6:48Speaker 8: I want to go around shoot video. I mean, did
- 6:50Speaker 8: you start, you know, going around to small businesses and
- 6:53Speaker 8: shooting commercials and stuff like that.
- 6:55Speaker 7: Well, I just went out a well honestly and was
- 6:57Speaker 7: just I we we filmed it as a little kid
- 7:00Speaker 7: then in the backyard, and you know, two thousand and nine,
- 7:02Speaker 7: I just bought a camera and just started filming stuff.
- 7:07Speaker 7: And the biggest thing I would say to become full
- 7:09Speaker 7: time being a filmmaker is just start making stuff. So
- 7:13Speaker 7: start learn how to run camera, learn how to run sound.
- 7:15Speaker 7: A lot of people don't want to learn these things.
- 7:18Speaker 7: They want to just direct to get a directing job.
- 7:21Speaker 7: Like that is I mean, it's not, it's just not.
- 7:26Speaker 7: You have to learn skills. If you can build skills
- 7:29Speaker 7: within camera, okay, you can make money. People will pay you.
- 7:32Speaker 7: So I mean you just hit everybody up. You film
- 7:35Speaker 7: stuff for free, film tongues of stuff. You get better
- 7:38Speaker 7: and better, you keep getting better. There's craigsitus Or's Facebook.
- 7:41Speaker 7: You just post your videos that you do on when
- 7:43Speaker 7: people just start reaching out to you say, oh, you
- 7:45Speaker 7: become the video guy in your community. So now everybody
- 7:48Speaker 7: knows me. You know what I'm saying. He does video,
- 7:51Speaker 7: he shoots weddings, he shoots real estate videos, he shoots film,
- 7:54Speaker 7: and you just become that guy and work just starts
- 7:57Speaker 7: coming in. For me, it was like I was a server,
- 8:00Speaker 7: you know, so my job was doing was serving and
- 8:02Speaker 7: then building my business on the side, video business, and
- 8:05Speaker 7: it took about five or six years. So for me,
- 8:08Speaker 7: it took about six year to build that to be
- 8:10Speaker 7: full time to where you know, me and Brian, we
- 8:14Speaker 7: never liked sitting at a desk. We've never really done that.
- 8:17Speaker 7: So we work for ourselves. So I mean, especially Brian,
- 8:21Speaker 7: he won't work for nobody, you know, he bought them,
- 8:24Speaker 7: works for himself, and he does a great job. And
- 8:27Speaker 7: he's always managed, and you know, he kind of took
- 8:29Speaker 7: the role as the producer because he's always managed and
- 8:31Speaker 7: he's always kind of put things together and you know,
- 8:34Speaker 7: knew how to deal with the tough situations that maybe
- 8:38Speaker 7: I didn't know how to do, you know.
- 8:40Speaker 6: And that's I think that's the key. Okay, So going
- 8:43Speaker 6: full time for a filmmaker is what are you actually doing? Like,
- 8:47Speaker 6: are you do you want to be a director? Like
- 8:49Speaker 6: Jason learned to run camera. You know, I know a
- 8:51Speaker 6: guy that's in our area who does film full time
- 8:56Speaker 6: and he started out in sound, right, he bought some
- 8:58Speaker 6: sound gear, started doing stuff for free to get his
- 9:01Speaker 6: reel up. Now he's known as the sound guy and
- 9:04Speaker 6: then just recently direct a movie.
- 9:06Speaker 4: So there's ways in. You just have to have that option.
- 9:10Speaker 6: In your brain looking for those other ways in, Like
- 9:13Speaker 6: when I went and I ended up being a first
- 9:17Speaker 6: a d and a co producer for the Apple of
- 9:19Speaker 6: my E movie. Right, that wasn't by accident. And most
- 9:23Speaker 6: people would say, oh, you gotta start as a PA
- 9:25Speaker 6: and you gotta work your way up. Well, you know, I,
- 9:28Speaker 6: like Jay said, I don't like working for people. So
- 9:30Speaker 6: I did that for certain reasons because I've wanted to
- 9:33Speaker 6: work with Burt Browns, I wanted to work with Amy Smart,
- 9:36Speaker 6: you know, I wanted that credit there. But I was
- 9:39Speaker 6: able to jump a bunch of steps by building a
- 9:41Speaker 6: network of people and not settling for a lower position
- 9:46Speaker 6: per se. You know, Yeah, I was a co producer
- 9:48Speaker 6: first ad Normally I like to run lead, but for
- 9:51Speaker 6: that case scenario, I made exceptions and went and did it.
- 9:56Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 9:58Speaker 3: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor,
- 10:04Speaker 3: and now back to the show.
- 10:07Speaker 6: So I think that's ultimately what it's like, Jason building
- 10:09Speaker 6: skills and to touch on that real quick, just super quick.
- 10:12Speaker 6: I know we're moving on. But and the worst worst,
- 10:16Speaker 6: you know, worst comes the worst. You've built these skills that.
- 10:19Speaker 4: You have forever.
- 10:22Speaker 7: And that's where now I can do video and I
- 10:24Speaker 7: can make money and I can work my way into
- 10:28Speaker 7: the industry where I want to be.
- 10:30Speaker 6: Build it.
- 10:30Speaker 7: I mean period, building, building skills, sales skills, marketing skills.
- 10:34Speaker 7: We're doing it all because that's what it takes. Now, man,
- 10:37Speaker 7: that's what it takes, I believe.
- 10:40Speaker 8: Yeah, it's like what Rob Rodriguez says. You know, if
- 10:43Speaker 8: you have the talent plus the know how, you're unstoppable,
- 10:46Speaker 8: which means uh and by that he means knowing the
- 10:49Speaker 8: technology how to use it and then also being you know,
- 10:52Speaker 8: being able to be creative. You know, you're unstoppable. Then
- 10:55Speaker 8: because you don't have to, you know, depend on a
- 10:57Speaker 8: lot of different people because you had again you you've
- 11:00Speaker 8: built all these skills up, and just to take a
- 11:02Speaker 8: step back to what you were just saying, Brian, I
- 11:06Speaker 8: completely get where you're coming from. Man, you don't want
- 11:09Speaker 8: to work for anybody else. I trust me. Man, I
- 11:11Speaker 8: get that so much because I used to get offers
- 11:14Speaker 8: all the time to produce other people's movies and I
- 11:16Speaker 8: would just say no. And when the people would ask why,
- 11:19Speaker 8: I would say, because I want to make my stuff.
- 11:21Speaker 8: I don't want to make your stuff.
- 11:22Speaker 6: Isn't that? Isn't that?
- 11:24Speaker 7: It is funny because if we if we got offered
- 11:27Speaker 7: to maybe direct a big movie, we probably turned it
- 11:29Speaker 7: down because it's just like I want to. We just
- 11:32Speaker 7: want to do what we want to do, and for us,
- 11:36Speaker 7: for us, it's doing our own projects, building our own
- 11:39Speaker 7: empire per se.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Yes.
- 11:42Speaker 8: Yeah, and you know you want to, you want to,
- 11:44Speaker 8: you know, people to make your stuff because we're only
- 11:46Speaker 8: on this earth for what what maybe eighty years? Ninety years,
- 11:49Speaker 8: I don't know. At the rate I'm going, I probably
- 11:51Speaker 8: have about three more years. So anyways, but come on,
- 11:54Speaker 8: you got more than that, man, I'd tell you. Some days,
- 11:59Speaker 8: I I really wonder anymore. But anyways, it all it's
- 12:03Speaker 8: all jokes everybody. I'm not really like, you know, dying
- 12:06Speaker 8: or anything. But but you know, you know, just as
- 12:09Speaker 8: we talk about, you know, making all these movies and
- 12:11Speaker 8: stuff like that, you guys have a piece of advice
- 12:13Speaker 8: that you gave. And by the way, you guys doing
- 12:15Speaker 8: Facebook video like promotions and Facebook videos live chats. That's
- 12:20Speaker 8: all genius marketing, by the way, So that's huge. And
- 12:24Speaker 8: I don't see any of the filmmaker and I'm friends
- 12:26Speaker 8: with a ton of filmmakers, believe me, I don't see
- 12:28Speaker 8: any of them doing that stuff. I think you guys
- 12:31Speaker 8: are really like ahead of the curve and doing that,
- 12:33Speaker 8: doing that type of of sort of you're talking to
- 12:36Speaker 8: your crowd, right, you know, directly, you're talking to people
- 12:39Speaker 8: that like your Facebook page. You're talking to people inside
- 12:41Speaker 8: the Frugal Filmmaker page, and you're talking to them directly,
- 12:45Speaker 8: and it becomes it's basically what I think that is,
- 12:48Speaker 8: by the way, is what Google Hangout was trying to be,
- 12:50Speaker 8: but they just couldn't get it right. And Facebook just
- 12:53Speaker 8: copied it and just said, hey, you know what, we
- 12:55Speaker 8: can do it better.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Anyway. Yeah, yeah, I agree, with you.
- 12:58Speaker 7: Yeah, it's just seeing around corners. It's seeing on corners
- 13:00Speaker 7: before anybody else, and that's how most people excel. Further,
- 13:02Speaker 7: that's how Robert Riguez did you know.
- 13:05Speaker 8: Yeah, and so one of those video chats you guys
- 13:09Speaker 8: mentioned making a movie for a thousand bucks, which I,
- 13:11Speaker 8: by the way, think is terrific advice because I have
- 13:17Speaker 8: seen too many people, and I'm sure you have two
- 13:19Speaker 8: where they want to make a movie and maybe whether
- 13:21Speaker 8: they're a first time filmmaker or maybe they made a
- 13:23Speaker 8: few shorts, and all of a sudden, they're trying to
- 13:25Speaker 8: either raise like ten thousand and fifty one hundred thousand
- 13:29Speaker 8: or more to make a film, and they don't have
- 13:31Speaker 8: the experience to really utilize that budget, you know what
- 13:35Speaker 8: I mean, and they so they end up spending money
- 13:38Speaker 8: on the wrong things or they just completely end up
- 13:41Speaker 8: just you know, just destroying the whole budget because they
- 13:45Speaker 8: dis don't know how to handle it.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree one hundred percent. Man.
- 13:49Speaker 6: Just to put in perspective too, we went to the AFM, right,
- 13:53Speaker 6: So we're there and we got a buddy there and.
- 13:55Speaker 4: Then we met this other gentleman.
- 13:57Speaker 6: So there's two different budgets should say here one was
- 14:02Speaker 6: under ten thousand. I'm not gonna say the number because
- 14:05Speaker 6: it's it's around where we're at, what we're talking about,
- 14:08Speaker 6: but I don't want to completely throw it out there,
- 14:10Speaker 6: So under ten thousand, and then this other gentleman made
- 14:14Speaker 6: his for around five hundred thousand, okay, and the two
- 14:18Speaker 6: different comparisons is crazy.
- 14:21Speaker 4: The other guy that made.
- 14:22Speaker 6: It for five had no experience, didn't get the right
- 14:25Speaker 6: talent on board to make it happen, okay, because it
- 14:28Speaker 6: was his first time, and he actually blew money that
- 14:31Speaker 6: was kind of an inheritance. So it just the problem
- 14:36Speaker 6: is he could have took that, made even a twenty
- 14:39Speaker 6: thousand dollars movie and did so much better with it,
- 14:41Speaker 6: versus the guy that made it under ten is got
- 14:45Speaker 6: the sales agents, got it released, and is gonna is
- 14:48Speaker 6: gonna get a release in theaters. So it's having it's
- 14:53Speaker 6: realizing that take your first one, give yourself a budget
- 14:57Speaker 6: of a thousand and three thousand, because we could all
- 15:00Speaker 6: we'll work for a year and save that. Okay, have
- 15:04Speaker 6: a script that's simplistic. It may not be your ultimate script,
- 15:07Speaker 6: but have it creative. Everybody talks about being creative, but
- 15:10Speaker 6: nobody's really creative. They throw money at it. Don't throw
- 15:13Speaker 6: money at your problem. Be creative with it. So if
- 15:16Speaker 6: you do make a mistake and you screw up on
- 15:18Speaker 6: your first one, you will screw up. You will you
- 15:21Speaker 6: make that mistake and you screw up. At least it's
- 15:24Speaker 6: not somebody's one hundred thousands that they gave you, or
- 15:27Speaker 6: you raised through your family and you went to all
- 15:29Speaker 6: your uncles and your parents and everybody, and then you
- 15:33Speaker 6: raise fifty grand and then you don't get the right
- 15:36Speaker 6: or you get a name on the box that's maybe
- 15:38Speaker 6: diluted because you didn't know his name was diluted, and
- 15:41Speaker 6: you can't sell it because they already got their movie
- 15:44Speaker 6: for the year that has that actor in it, you
- 15:46Speaker 6: know what I'm saying. So it's having an understanding of
- 15:49Speaker 6: the market, what's going on, what's your budget, Keep it simplistic,
- 15:54Speaker 6: be creative, and you might end up with a freakin
- 15:57Speaker 6: You might end up with a winner, or you might
- 15:58Speaker 6: end up with a dud, but at least you didn't
- 16:00Speaker 6: or might take you twenty years. You just don't know.
- 16:03Speaker 7: But the biggest hold up I think filmmakers have is
- 16:05Speaker 7: they think they need, especially new ones that don't know
- 16:07Speaker 7: much about it. They think they need millions or fifty thousand,
- 16:11Speaker 7: like you don't. You just need experience. So go one location,
- 16:16Speaker 7: one actor, write a script, and just go make a
- 16:18Speaker 7: way for a thousand bucks. And people, we get a
- 16:20Speaker 7: lot of flak for that. People don't like that. Half
- 16:22Speaker 7: the people like it, half people don't like it. But
- 16:24Speaker 7: it is what it is, and it's it's getting those
- 16:26Speaker 7: kids that wouldn't know what to do to give them
- 16:30Speaker 7: some hope that, oh I can go make actually make
- 16:32Speaker 7: a film and maybe meet a connection that leads.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Me to this door to that door.
- 16:36Speaker 6: So it's opening doors.
- 16:38Speaker 7: Don't sit around and wait for the fifty thousand, just
- 16:40Speaker 7: go make it for a thousand and then eventually that
- 16:42Speaker 7: fifty thousand will come knock, so.
- 16:44Speaker 6: Money you'll get the money when they're freddy, I feel.
- 16:47Speaker 6: You know.
- 16:48Speaker 8: It's also when when people look like I'm sure every
- 16:50Speaker 8: filmmaker in one way or another, wants to emulate, you know,
- 16:53Speaker 8: the people that they look up to as their heroes.
- 16:56Speaker 8: The problem is sometimes if let's just use Chrisopher Nolan
- 16:59Speaker 8: as an example, well, you know, if we wanted to
- 17:01Speaker 8: emulate him, you know, we couldn't do an inception, because
- 17:05Speaker 8: what was that like one hundred million, one hundred fifty million.
- 17:07Speaker 8: But if if we looked at Following, and I don't
- 17:10Speaker 8: know if you guys have ever seen Following, it's actually
- 17:12Speaker 8: a really cool movie that Christopher Nolan shot and it
- 17:16Speaker 8: didn't cost him a lot of money at all, and
- 17:18Speaker 8: it really just and then that's what sent him up
- 17:20Speaker 8: to make Memento, which was what he was trying to
- 17:22Speaker 8: make to begin with, but he couldn't make it because
- 17:24Speaker 8: he couldn't get the budget, so he made Following instead.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Makes sense, he.
- 17:28Speaker 6: Put his ultimate script on the back burner to get
- 17:30Speaker 6: one done and show what he can do. I think
- 17:32Speaker 6: that's the key, show what you can do, like if
- 17:35Speaker 6: you can't. You know, people think if you get money,
- 17:37Speaker 6: you're gonna make a great film if you and don't
- 17:40Speaker 6: get me wrong, there's people that if you hire the
- 17:43Speaker 6: right people in every spot and you're the director and
- 17:47Speaker 6: you actually don't have the ego and you're able to
- 17:50Speaker 6: listen to what everybody's saying and adjust to the situation.
- 17:53Speaker 4: You got the money, yeah, go ahead, you know what
- 17:56Speaker 4: I mean.
- 17:56Speaker 6: You'll have people backing you up and you'll learn a
- 17:59Speaker 6: lot doing it. But for us that don't have that,
- 18:02Speaker 6: we don't have the connections, we don't have the big bucks,
- 18:05Speaker 6: and we weren't able to raise the money. What do
- 18:07Speaker 6: you do do you sit around? No, you got to
- 18:10Speaker 6: get off your ass. You got to go make something.
- 18:12Speaker 6: I mean, And that's just what we did. And that's
- 18:14Speaker 6: why we talk like that, because we're like, dude, we
- 18:16Speaker 6: made our first movie on three grand, you know what
- 18:18Speaker 6: I mean?
- 18:20Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 18:20Speaker 8: And you know, I think you also said it too, Brian,
- 18:23Speaker 8: or maybe it was you Jake on one of those
- 18:24Speaker 8: Facebook chats. You know, you have to you have to
- 18:27Speaker 8: show what you can do for nothing, because anybody can
- 18:29Speaker 8: spend money. And that's so true. I mean, that kind
- 18:31Speaker 8: of hit me because I'm saying, sit there going, you
- 18:33Speaker 8: know what, that's that's the truth. You have to be
- 18:34Speaker 8: able to show that you can only take you know,
- 18:37Speaker 8: maybe your cell phone or a lower grade camera that
- 18:41Speaker 8: maybe isn't four K or whatever, right, but you can
- 18:44Speaker 8: make something. But you have to be able to show
- 18:46Speaker 8: you you did the hustle or whatever, because you want
- 18:48Speaker 8: people to look at that movie and say, hey, Jake
- 18:51Speaker 8: and Brian, how the hell did you guys shoot this movie?
- 18:53Speaker 8: And then you tell them, Oh, we did it for
- 18:54Speaker 8: you know, fifty bucks or a hundred bucks or whatever,
- 18:56Speaker 8: one thousand bucks. They go, how the hell did you
- 18:58Speaker 8: do that for that little amount of money?
- 19:00Speaker 7: I mean, how how could you not do it for
- 19:02Speaker 7: that kind of money? Like phones are almost like the
- 19:07Speaker 7: four K thing, like if you have the budget, cool, Well,
- 19:10Speaker 7: if you're trying to shoot something super high quality but
- 19:13Speaker 7: you don't know what you're doing, it just turns it
- 19:15Speaker 7: just looks really bad. Like you have a better chance
- 19:17Speaker 7: of using a phone and making it as it's a
- 19:20Speaker 7: phone and shooting something that's really super creative, that's more
- 19:24Speaker 7: interesting to me, and something that you could possibly maybe
- 19:27Speaker 7: release on Facebook and build a name for yourself. You
- 19:31Speaker 7: know that that would work so much better, I feel
- 19:34Speaker 7: than trying to polish something when you when it's like
- 19:37Speaker 7: it's just it won't look right, trying to polish something
- 19:40Speaker 7: with something that's not polishable.
- 19:43Speaker 6: If that makes any sense.
- 19:44Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, that makes perfect sense. Because you know, just
- 19:48Speaker 8: as a as a as a food for thought type
- 19:50Speaker 8: of experiment, if somebody listening to this, what advice would
- 19:54Speaker 8: you give them if they said they wanted to make
- 19:55Speaker 8: a movie this weekend? Just as like a short film,
- 19:58Speaker 8: or not even this weekend, but like you know what
- 20:00Speaker 8: I mean, like actually planning something.
- 20:03Speaker 3: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 20:09Speaker 3: and now back to the show.
- 20:12Speaker 8: You know, would you say, utilize like the living room
- 20:14Speaker 8: that you have right now, or your house you are
- 20:16Speaker 8: live in right now, or or or and then just
- 20:18Speaker 8: you know, film on your phone something like that, just
- 20:20Speaker 8: to just to sort of get your uh sort of
- 20:23Speaker 8: like you know, get your feet under you as a filmmaker,
- 20:25Speaker 8: and then just sort of go from and then just
- 20:27Speaker 8: see what you made and then sort of go from there.
- 20:30Speaker 7: All right, So let's put in perspective like me and
- 20:32Speaker 7: Brian are going to make a film. What do we
- 20:34Speaker 7: have access to right now?
- 20:35Speaker 4: We're in my apartment.
- 20:36Speaker 7: Okay, we know we have our apartment. We know we
- 20:39Speaker 7: have each other, we can work with each other. What
- 20:42Speaker 7: cameras do we have? Do we know anybody with cameras?
- 20:44Speaker 7: Do we know somebody that can run a camera? If
- 20:46Speaker 7: we don't, you know what, let's just have fun and
- 20:48Speaker 7: maybe use our phone and actually create something on our phone.
- 20:52Speaker 7: We have Brian's daughter here, maybe she can act in it,
- 20:54Speaker 7: you know, So just you have to just utilize what
- 20:58Speaker 7: you have don't try to like write what you want
- 21:00Speaker 7: want because right now, it's not about what you want
- 21:02Speaker 7: about what you have if you don't have a lot.
- 21:04Speaker 6: So that's what I would say, what do you think?
- 21:06Speaker 8: Right?
- 21:06Speaker 6: Yeah, and keep it simplistic, like you know, like like
- 21:09Speaker 6: Jake said, you know, you get one location. Like our
- 21:11Speaker 6: first movie we did in two locations and the intro
- 21:15Speaker 6: scene was maybe like five minutes and then the rest
- 21:18Speaker 6: of it was in one location.
- 21:19Speaker 4: It was in a house, and it was a slasher.
- 21:22Speaker 4: You know, it is what it is.
- 21:23Speaker 6: It's it's not perfect, but it's ours and we made
- 21:25Speaker 6: it and we we released it ourselves, and you know,
- 21:28Speaker 6: we got a little bit of a name talent on it,
- 21:30Speaker 6: and we had fun with it and we learned a lot.
- 21:32Speaker 6: So I suggest that, yeah, correct, look what's what you got?
- 21:36Speaker 6: What do you have access to be creative and have
- 21:39Speaker 6: some fun with it.
- 21:39Speaker 7: You know, I would focus on more what you have
- 21:42Speaker 7: around and then what you cause most people focus on
- 21:44Speaker 7: like I don't have the camera, all right, I just
- 21:46Speaker 7: don't have this or I don't have that, Like you
- 21:48Speaker 7: have a phone, because you're obviously watching our lives or
- 21:52Speaker 7: you're watching stuff on a phone.
- 21:53Speaker 4: So a phone's good enough.
- 21:55Speaker 7: I mean, just maybe spend the money on a good
- 21:57Speaker 7: good sound, yeah, because I think that's key. Yeah, good sound,
- 22:00Speaker 7: and then maybe the phone quality would look It would
- 22:03Speaker 7: be interesting if you can come up with something clever.
- 22:05Speaker 7: I can't tell people what to come up with, but
- 22:07Speaker 7: come up with something cool. Could you could do some
- 22:10Speaker 7: damage with something like that, I think, because that's where
- 22:13Speaker 7: it is now. It's all phone and people are going live,
- 22:16Speaker 7: so you know, we might do something like that. You know, eventually,
- 22:20Speaker 7: someone better do it soon because.
- 22:21Speaker 6: It's the new.
- 22:22Speaker 7: It is what it is, what it is right now.
- 22:25Speaker 7: So to capitalize on doing someone maybe snapchatting all day
- 22:29Speaker 7: would be cool. I would more or less watch that
- 22:31Speaker 7: than trying to watch a drama or something like that
- 22:34Speaker 7: would be that is the thing. It already has a
- 22:37Speaker 7: it has a marketed fanase, it has a marketability marketable.
- 22:40Speaker 7: You can say this is my snapchat movie. I'd be like, oh,
- 22:42Speaker 7: let me check. That seems that's different. So I would
- 22:45Speaker 7: think outside the box. If you really want to make
- 22:47Speaker 7: something that's going to leave an impression. If you just
- 22:50Speaker 7: want to make something, just go make it.
- 22:51Speaker 8: But yeah, did you guys see the that movie. It
- 22:55Speaker 8: was a well, it was a short film where it
- 22:58Speaker 8: took place all within a person texting her friends. It
- 23:01Speaker 8: was just basically the actual they screencapped her phone and
- 23:06Speaker 8: the whole entire movie was was literally you just saw her,
- 23:10Speaker 8: uh her the screen of her phone as she was
- 23:12Speaker 8: texting people back and forth.
- 23:14Speaker 6: I did not see that.
- 23:15Speaker 4: I'd love to see that. Actually, that's an awesome idea.
- 23:18Speaker 7: That's what it That's what it is, you know, that's
- 23:20Speaker 7: what it is. Like we uh, we wanted to make
- 23:22Speaker 7: something and we came up with what we have. We
- 23:25Speaker 7: don't have a I have a C one hundred and
- 23:27Speaker 7: we want to do the show, a TV show you
- 23:29Speaker 7: know called Haunted Tours that we're putting out actually next year, uh,
- 23:32Speaker 7: next month. And we kept it very simple, you know,
- 23:37Speaker 7: very simple. It's very dark, very real.
- 23:39Speaker 8: It's just us.
- 23:40Speaker 7: It didn't take a bunch of money.
- 23:41Speaker 6: Yeah, we go in there and we investigate locations. Now
- 23:44Speaker 6: we're not the investigators. We got other people on board
- 23:46Speaker 6: for that, and we were able to shoot five episodes,
- 23:49Speaker 6: you know what I mean. So it's it's just creating.
- 23:52Speaker 6: I mean that's the biggest thing. Once you create, you'll
- 23:54Speaker 6: get better and you'll learn from it. And you'll make
- 23:58Speaker 6: mistakes and then you can create again, and you can
- 24:00Speaker 6: keep creating and before you know it, I mean, you're
- 24:02Speaker 6: you're doing it and you get paid it.
- 24:04Speaker 7: If we if we didn't go live on Monday, you
- 24:06Speaker 7: would have never seen us, and you would have never
- 24:09Speaker 7: you know, we might have not been on your podcast,
- 24:11Speaker 7: you know. And for us, this could lead us somewhere,
- 24:14Speaker 7: This could lead us somewhere good, or you just don't.
- 24:17Speaker 6: Know, you know, you just got to just got to
- 24:19Speaker 6: do it.
- 24:19Speaker 4: I would say, just do it.
- 24:21Speaker 8: Yeah, you never know where what door you open, where
- 24:24Speaker 8: it's going to lead into, uh, you know. And I
- 24:26Speaker 8: found that out too, because even starting this podcast, for instance,
- 24:30Speaker 8: has led to so many doors being opened that I
- 24:33Speaker 8: wouldn't even have thought about, you know, when I started
- 24:36Speaker 8: this what three years ago or whatever the hell it's been.
- 24:38Speaker 8: But I mean, it's just been a lot of interesting
- 24:41Speaker 8: stuff happening. And again, you know, I mean even when
- 24:43Speaker 8: I've done like my stuff around the area in this
- 24:45Speaker 8: Philly area, just doing things, you sort of become I
- 24:50Speaker 8: don't want to use that word an attraction, but but
- 24:53Speaker 8: you know what I mean, it's kind of like that
- 24:54Speaker 8: book The Secret where you kind of like attract things,
- 24:56Speaker 8: you know what I mean, where it's like people see
- 24:58Speaker 8: actually doing stuff and all of a sudden they go, oh,
- 25:01Speaker 8: I want to talk to that person, because it's they're
- 25:03Speaker 8: not just talking about it, they're actually doing it. And
- 25:06Speaker 8: I remember, I forget who it was who gave me
- 25:08Speaker 8: this advice when I when I started years ago, but
- 25:11Speaker 8: he said that there, if you actually make something, you're
- 25:14Speaker 8: not normal. Normal is sitting on your couch talking about
- 25:18Speaker 8: making something.
- 25:21Speaker 4: That's so true, Rid, Yeah, it's just dealing, bro.
- 25:28Speaker 8: Yeah, And so again I love that advice by the way,
- 25:31Speaker 8: you know, just finding out what you have. Instead of
- 25:33Speaker 8: thinking about the negative, which is what you don't have,
- 25:36Speaker 8: you're thinking about the positive, which is what you do
- 25:38Speaker 8: have and you do have access to. And sometimes when
- 25:41Speaker 8: people start brainstorming things like that, they start getting bigger ideas,
- 25:45Speaker 8: you know what I mean. They start thinking, oh, you
- 25:46Speaker 8: know what I forgot I had access to this, or hey,
- 25:49Speaker 8: you know what, we can go down to the park
- 25:50Speaker 8: and shoot this scene because it's a public park and
- 25:53Speaker 8: you know, we can go off to the side there,
- 25:54Speaker 8: and you know, stuff like that where you know, you start,
- 25:58Speaker 8: you know, you start actually working and stuff starts flowing
- 26:00Speaker 8: a little better.
- 26:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean you get so much. The thing is,
- 26:04Speaker 4: like we said earlier, building your skills because you get
- 26:06Speaker 4: so much knowledge of how is it? And then and
- 26:09Speaker 4: then one thing to do too is, you know, go
- 26:11Speaker 4: on a.
- 26:11Speaker 6: Couple sets that are local that you know, got some
- 26:13Speaker 6: name talent on and learn watch how they operate, you know,
- 26:16Speaker 6: and then you can help operate your set like that.
- 26:19Speaker 6: You know. So, I mean that's that's ultimately too, just
- 26:21Speaker 6: just watching, learning.
- 26:23Speaker 7: Getting in the it's getting in the mix.
- 26:24Speaker 8: You know.
- 26:24Speaker 7: When we do those lives, we get in the mix.
- 26:26Speaker 7: It's like we're we're we're online networking with other filmmakers,
- 26:30Speaker 7: sharing our advice, hoping to get other advice back, because
- 26:33Speaker 7: we're always learning.
- 26:35Speaker 4: The key is always learned.
- 26:36Speaker 7: We we like the mixed filmmaking with business because it
- 26:39Speaker 7: is ultimately a business and if you don't understand that
- 26:44Speaker 7: part of it, you have to either get somebody who
- 26:46Speaker 7: understands it or I think you'll be doomed unless you're
- 26:49Speaker 7: super creative that someone just grabs you up. I think
- 26:53Speaker 7: nowadays you need to know the whole aspect of it.
- 26:55Speaker 7: You need to know business, sales, marketing, it's all relevant now.
- 26:59Speaker 4: You need to know it.
- 27:00Speaker 6: Because the biggest thing too, if you look at it,
- 27:02Speaker 6: like when rober Rodriguez made it and Quentin Tarantino, it
- 27:05Speaker 6: was a different error, Like it was a different time,
- 27:07Speaker 6: you know what I mean. So now it's a different time.
- 27:10Speaker 6: So who's gonna be those guys that break out through
- 27:14Speaker 6: a new technology or a new way and they're they're
- 27:17Speaker 6: reinventing not reinventing the wheel. But because if you look
- 27:21Speaker 6: at it, everything that we're doing, like right now, this
- 27:25Speaker 6: is like radio. You know, when we're on Facebook Live,
- 27:28Speaker 6: that's like TV. But it's just a different way of
- 27:30Speaker 6: bringing it to an audience, you know what I'm saying.
- 27:32Speaker 6: So I think that's the biggest thing is is finding
- 27:34Speaker 6: out how to do it and take capitalize on it
- 27:38Speaker 6: and see what happens. That's that's all we.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Try to do.
- 27:41Speaker 8: Yeah, you know that's a good point, by the way,
- 27:43Speaker 8: because I mentioned that too before in past episodes. You know,
- 27:46Speaker 8: you had the nineties and you have Tarantino and Smith
- 27:49Speaker 8: and Rodriguez, they all came up and they sort of
- 27:51Speaker 8: became the new celebrity director of replacing the ones in
- 27:55Speaker 8: the eighties like your carpenter and you know, and you
- 27:58Speaker 8: have all those directors that get the seventies directors like
- 28:00Speaker 8: Spielberg but and Scorsese. But what happens is with today
- 28:05Speaker 8: you don't really see that celebrity director anymore. You don't
- 28:07Speaker 8: really see that, and you kind of look at to
- 28:10Speaker 8: see who what what people are really making films u uh,
- 28:13Speaker 8: from our young from the next general, the general, the
- 28:15Speaker 8: next generation. You see like Okay, Damian Chase, James wand
- 28:20Speaker 8: you know, you have guys like that, but you're like,
- 28:22Speaker 8: but but they don't really they're not really that celebrity
- 28:24Speaker 8: director type where people would notice them unless they're in
- 28:26Speaker 8: the business like us, who would notice, you know, who
- 28:28Speaker 8: would say oh, that's that's that's them, you know, you know,
- 28:32Speaker 8: you know what I mean. And that's why I kind
- 28:33Speaker 8: of think that if you look towards like what YouTube
- 28:36Speaker 8: is doing, if you look at the top YouTubers, I
- 28:38Speaker 8: mean you've got like uh, Peudie Pie, You've got you know,
- 28:42Speaker 8: like like what's the other guy's named, Logan Paul. You
- 28:44Speaker 8: get all those guys and they're just doing like like
- 28:47Speaker 8: skid stuff. And I'm always wondering if you had somebody
- 28:50Speaker 8: like that who actually made short films or something like that,
- 28:53Speaker 8: who was actually a celebrity of that level on a
- 28:56Speaker 8: particular social media channel, they could capitalize on it and
- 28:59Speaker 8: have almost a hundred center the marketplace.
- 29:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree so much too.
- 29:04Speaker 6: Like nowadays, they don't want to be celebrities or stars,
- 29:07Speaker 6: they want to be beaucian. It's like he said, you
- 29:12Speaker 6: know who I'm surprised who's never I don't think I've
- 29:14Speaker 6: ever seen him do a feature is.
- 29:16Speaker 4: Ryan cop from Film Right Film Riot.
- 29:19Speaker 8: I think y has like what I think.
- 29:21Speaker 6: It's instance, are a good audience of people to actually
- 29:25Speaker 6: make something really cool like a feature and actually get.
- 29:28Speaker 4: Some bud behind it.
- 29:31Speaker 8: Yeah. I know Ryan Ku from No Film School. He's
- 29:35Speaker 8: been making his for a while. But yeah, I know
- 29:36Speaker 8: a lot of these these websites and stuff. He kind
- 29:38Speaker 8: of wonder why they don't have somebody trying to capitalize
- 29:40Speaker 8: on that. Yeah.
- 29:41Speaker 4: I don't know, man, I don't know, but I agree
- 29:44Speaker 4: with you one hundred percent.
- 29:45Speaker 6: Man. I think I think somebody, you know, somebody's got
- 29:47Speaker 6: to be that breakout and uh, you know the new
- 29:50Speaker 6: way of doing it.
- 29:51Speaker 4: I think it's it's experimenting.
- 29:53Speaker 7: Yeah, I think most of the filmmakers get caught up
- 29:55Speaker 7: in the old ways, like we were just talking about.
- 29:58Speaker 3: We'll be right back after word from our sponsor and
- 30:04Speaker 3: now back to the show.
- 30:07Speaker 7: So if you hone in you capitalize on what is now,
- 30:11Speaker 7: which is social media, I think you will win.
- 30:17Speaker 8: Yeah, and and also too with social media, that's how
- 30:19Speaker 8: you pre uh you know, pre sell your crowdfunding campaign.
- 30:22Speaker 8: That's how you get your you meet other filmmakers, your network.
- 30:25Speaker 8: Because I always tell people and and I didn't even
- 30:27Speaker 8: ask if you guys went to film school, but I
- 30:29Speaker 8: mean that's what I tell people because I've actually worked
- 30:31Speaker 8: at a college and and I've actually you know, I've
- 30:34Speaker 8: graduated from college too, and it's just like you know, nowadays,
- 30:39Speaker 8: I would just I would if I was graduating from
- 30:41Speaker 8: high school. I wouldn't even bother with it. I would
- 30:43Speaker 8: learn on you to me and network wherever I need
- 30:46Speaker 8: to go to meetup dot com, look at meet up
- 30:48Speaker 8: to my area. I'd go on to Twitter or LinkedIn,
- 30:52Speaker 8: you know, I go to YouTube. I mean, you know
- 30:54Speaker 8: what I mean, It's so many avenues and I'm like,
- 30:55Speaker 8: why would you spend two hundred thousand dollars to go
- 30:57Speaker 8: to college? I mean, you know what I mean, It
- 30:59Speaker 8: just it just doesn't seem to make any sense to me.
- 31:03Speaker 4: No not.
- 31:03Speaker 6: I mean to be honest with you, we're both high
- 31:06Speaker 6: school dropouts. Man, I dropped out at fifteen. I'm just
- 31:09Speaker 6: I just never liked I guess you could say I'm
- 31:11Speaker 6: just kind of a revel dude. I just never liked system.
- 31:14Speaker 6: I've always kind of liked to go my own way.
- 31:16Speaker 6: And I think that's what filmmakers are missing nowadays, too,
- 31:20Speaker 6: is go your own way. Like don't I know everybody
- 31:23Speaker 6: wants to go to the theater and you want to
- 31:25Speaker 6: get a distribution deal with Sony and all this shit.
- 31:28Speaker 6: Well what's the how can we capitalize on what's going on?
- 31:31Speaker 6: Like they'll come, you know, they'll come knocking at you
- 31:34Speaker 6: when you've got something hot. So if you can make
- 31:37Speaker 6: it hot yourself, like that's that's ultimately, that's all it is.
- 31:42Speaker 6: You know, like people you want to if you get
- 31:44Speaker 6: a name talent in your movie, like Tom Cruise, you're
- 31:47Speaker 6: just helping out with less marketing in the back.
- 31:50Speaker 4: End, you know what I mean. So do a movie.
- 31:54Speaker 6: If you're gonna get a budget, you do a movie.
- 31:56Speaker 6: Say you do one on twenty grand, shoot it on
- 31:59Speaker 6: ten and then use the other or ten for marketing
- 32:01Speaker 6: and use it and get it in a genre that
- 32:03Speaker 6: sells without name talent, you know what I mean. So
- 32:06Speaker 6: I think it's being creative and trying different things.
- 32:08Speaker 8: You know, yeah, yeah, and you know what. The whole
- 32:13Speaker 8: the idea of college too, just to go back to
- 32:15Speaker 8: that real quick, you know, is about education. Like we
- 32:18Speaker 8: said about learning skills. You even mentioned you could go
- 32:20Speaker 8: onto other crews and stuff like that, other other sets
- 32:23Speaker 8: in the area and learn you know, these same skills
- 32:26Speaker 8: rather than you know, paying money. I mean, I had
- 32:28Speaker 8: a friend of mine he actually went to NYU I
- 32:31Speaker 8: think it was or ny Film School and he actually
- 32:34Speaker 8: ended up the senior thesis project. And this is where
- 32:38Speaker 8: he dropped out and said, you know, what the hell
- 32:39Speaker 8: is the point of this? He actually said, they the
- 32:43Speaker 8: top like five projects were chosen and then you had
- 32:45Speaker 8: to work on that person's project. And he said, so
- 32:48Speaker 8: I'm gonna be paying, like, you know, a couple thousand
- 32:51Speaker 8: dollars to sit here and hold a boom pole for
- 32:53Speaker 8: somebody else, Like what the hell is this?
- 32:55Speaker 4: That's crazy.
- 32:56Speaker 6: You're better off taking you know, like we said, make
- 32:59Speaker 6: it take a thousand to three thousand f fuck film
- 33:03Speaker 6: school and go make a feature.
- 33:05Speaker 4: That's your film.
- 33:06Speaker 6: School school was a business. They want your money. The
- 33:09Speaker 6: university is just a business in general. I feel, to
- 33:12Speaker 6: be honest with you, I feel like all school in general,
- 33:15Speaker 6: unless it's to be like a doctor or a lawyer
- 33:17Speaker 6: and things like that, it's all there in place as
- 33:20Speaker 6: a business, you know, and I understand it. You know.
- 33:22Speaker 6: Some people learn that way, but me personally, I don't
- 33:26Speaker 6: learn like that. Like I like to get my hands dirty.
- 33:28Speaker 6: I like to get in there, you know.
- 33:30Speaker 4: Jake's the same way. We learn by doing, not so
- 33:33Speaker 4: much like reading a book, you know.
- 33:35Speaker 6: You know, maybe that's because we're dropouts and we're not
- 33:37Speaker 6: very smart. You know, we learn a different way, you
- 33:40Speaker 6: know what I'm saying.
- 33:41Speaker 7: I mean, we learned that we learn a lot more
- 33:42Speaker 7: now than we we ever have.
- 33:45Speaker 6: You know, we went to the Tennis Growth Con early
- 33:49Speaker 6: this year, we went to we went to the AFM.
- 33:54Speaker 7: So we're always getting knowledge and trying to find different
- 33:57Speaker 7: mentors and things like that, and that's key. It's funny
- 34:00Speaker 7: people who have already done it and walk those that path,
- 34:04Speaker 7: and then at.
- 34:04Speaker 6: The same time too, maybe we don't have to follow
- 34:07Speaker 6: their path because I think in filmmaking. It's one of
- 34:10Speaker 6: those things where if you talk to everybody that's made it,
- 34:13Speaker 6: there's usually like a they just it's a different path
- 34:17Speaker 6: for the most part. Like you know, they knew a
- 34:19Speaker 6: friend of a friend and then they did something, uh,
- 34:22Speaker 6: and they directed it and then it got picked up,
- 34:25Speaker 6: or you know, they had a script and then like
- 34:28Speaker 6: like in Quintin's case, he had a friend that knew
- 34:31Speaker 6: Harvey Kaitel and they liked the script and he was
- 34:34Speaker 6: a writer at first. And so I mean, I think
- 34:35Speaker 6: everybody's story is gonna be different, but it's finding your story,
- 34:40Speaker 6: like how are you gonna make it?
- 34:42Speaker 4: And the only way, you know, the only way you
- 34:43Speaker 4: know that.
- 34:44Speaker 6: Story is by just going on that journey and figuring
- 34:47Speaker 6: it out as you go. I feel, you know, look
- 34:49Speaker 6: at what other people have done, take it in for yourself,
- 34:53Speaker 6: adjust with it, and see how it can work for you,
- 34:56Speaker 6: because nobody can tell you how to do something because
- 34:59Speaker 6: you're gonna have their own ways of thinking.
- 35:01Speaker 8: I feel, you know, yeah, absolutely, he and you mentioned
- 35:06Speaker 8: growth con by the way, so I wanted to ask
- 35:08Speaker 8: about your your impressions of growth of the text growth
- 35:10Speaker 8: con actually and a side note, I'm actually talking to
- 35:13Speaker 8: Grant Cardon to have them call on this podcast. So
- 35:16Speaker 8: it's kind of interesting we tie this in. But so
- 35:19Speaker 8: you guys went through the tax conference earlier this year,
- 35:22Speaker 8: So what were some of your impressions you took away
- 35:24Speaker 8: from it.
- 35:25Speaker 4: I loved it.
- 35:26Speaker 6: I mean the biggest thing I learned was these guys
- 35:30Speaker 6: that make it successfully. They just do it, and they
- 35:34Speaker 6: believed in themselves enough and they took some risk and
- 35:39Speaker 6: calculated risk and they just went for it. And sometimes
- 35:43Speaker 6: you failed, but it was us so much of a
- 35:46Speaker 6: failure as it is of a learning curve or that hey,
- 35:49Speaker 6: that didn't work, but that worked in it, So let
- 35:51Speaker 6: me try that with this, you know. So I mean
- 35:54Speaker 6: that's one of the biggest things we learned that I learned.
- 35:57Speaker 6: And one good thing is too is networking.
- 35:59Speaker 4: Man.
- 36:00Speaker 6: I mean, we met a really good connection one of
- 36:03Speaker 6: the speakers there, that's that was the only guy that
- 36:06Speaker 6: was the TV guy we met there because we just
- 36:10Speaker 6: went and took a picture with him, talked to him,
- 36:11Speaker 6: and now we've got a direct access to television. So
- 36:15Speaker 6: it's just it's just.
- 36:16Speaker 4: Doing being being present, you know, And.
- 36:18Speaker 7: We put a lot on the line. We spent a
- 36:20Speaker 7: lot of money, So I would say, you know, we
- 36:24Speaker 7: just went and invested in ourselves.
- 36:25Speaker 6: Same with a FM. We spent a lot of money.
- 36:28Speaker 6: You know, it's the only way, the only way, and.
- 36:34Speaker 8: And and also a FM. What was your impression of that,
- 36:37Speaker 8: because I know you mentioned Jason Brubaker, he's a mutual
- 36:39Speaker 8: friend of both of ours. Uh, you know, he's actually
- 36:42Speaker 8: been on the podcast before as well, but uh, I
- 36:44Speaker 8: know he usually goes to a FM. So what were
- 36:47Speaker 8: some of your impressions from this year's AFM.
- 36:51Speaker 4: You know, I like the AFM.
- 36:53Speaker 6: It's the old way of doing things to where you
- 36:55Speaker 6: you know, you're meeting with fires and you're meeting with
- 36:58Speaker 6: filmmakers and things like that, and I think it's great
- 37:02Speaker 6: for networking. You know, I met like fifty connections while
- 37:06Speaker 6: I was there. I met a lot of buyers. We
- 37:11Speaker 6: didn't do any deal. We'd ended up not not doing
- 37:13Speaker 6: a deal with some of our stuff. But the point
- 37:15Speaker 6: of it was was was getting our feet wet within
- 37:19Speaker 6: where we ultimately want to be, and that's as a
- 37:21Speaker 6: distributor and studio to you know, be able to produce,
- 37:26Speaker 6: be able to distribute and be able to get something
- 37:29Speaker 6: out there to buyers or whether it's self distribution in
- 37:32Speaker 6: whatever way.
- 37:34Speaker 4: But I love the AFM man learn.
- 37:36Speaker 7: And I would say say, if you're not willing to
- 37:38Speaker 7: take risks, big risks, then it's gonna be super hard
- 37:41Speaker 7: for you. Like we took a big We took a
- 37:43Speaker 7: big risk. We went as actually we didn't go as attendees.
- 37:46Speaker 6: We went as exhibitors.
- 37:47Speaker 7: So we had like a booth and we had about
- 37:49Speaker 7: like six or eight movies that we took with us.
- 37:55Speaker 6: And just yeah, I just did it.
- 37:58Speaker 8: So like what were some of the did Did you
- 38:00Speaker 8: get a lot of feedback on those movies? Yeah?
- 38:03Speaker 7: We we we realize what is good, what people want.
- 38:06Speaker 7: I mean, you, so you spend years on this movie,
- 38:10Speaker 7: you love this movie. You you just this is your baby,
- 38:12Speaker 7: right and you you're like, hey, all right, I'm gonna
- 38:14Speaker 7: show you this trailer and you don't telling me. They
- 38:16Speaker 7: don't know you made it. You're just like, all right,
- 38:18Speaker 7: here it goes. They're like no, no, no, no, no,
- 38:19Speaker 7: no no no no no like that. So it's like
- 38:23Speaker 7: it's not about how good you think your movie is.
- 38:25Speaker 4: It's like is there a market for it? Are there
- 38:28Speaker 4: people gonna buy it? Are they gonna pick it up?
- 38:32Speaker 6: You know it's it's freaking it's it's very eye opening
- 38:37Speaker 6: in the way of you are not gonna know exactly
- 38:40Speaker 6: what that's. That's why a distributor doesn't know what's gonna work.
- 38:44Speaker 6: That's why they pick up so many movies because why you.
- 38:46Speaker 7: Don't realize giving MG's unless there's yeah, they don't Bart
- 38:49Speaker 7: Reynolds on it or somebody big.
- 38:51Speaker 6: They don't know what's gonna hit. And that's why you
- 38:54Speaker 6: know when when a buyer walks in, And that's the
- 38:55Speaker 6: biggest thing too, as having relationships with the buyers already built,
- 38:59Speaker 6: you know what I mean. So if you don't have
- 39:00Speaker 6: these relationships with the buyers, you're walking in kind of
- 39:04Speaker 6: cold because now they're just looking at your product and
- 39:08Speaker 6: they really don't give a shit about you. It's more
- 39:10Speaker 6: about the product anyways. If you have that warmth within
- 39:14Speaker 6: they already know you, you can do some deals, you
- 39:16Speaker 6: know what I mean. So it was ours more of
- 39:19Speaker 6: us just jumping in head first and seeing what we find.
- 39:22Speaker 6: And uh, you know, there's no right way I feel
- 39:26Speaker 6: like to do things. You just got to do what
- 39:28Speaker 6: works for you. And that's what we did and learned
- 39:31Speaker 6: a lot. Jason Jason was really cool. Got to meet
- 39:34Speaker 6: him Tom Malloy, who was kind of a I feel
- 39:38Speaker 6: like a mentor to me because I read his book
- 39:41Speaker 6: years ago, Bankrolled, which was really good, and.
- 39:44Speaker 4: Duh and Dub I got to meet Dove Simmons.
- 39:46Speaker 6: So now was the three mentors that before we you know,
- 39:50Speaker 6: before we were doing it full time to where we
- 39:52Speaker 6: actually got to meet these guys.
- 39:55Speaker 3: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor,
- 40:01Speaker 3: and now back to the show.
- 40:04Speaker 6: And your respected me because you're going in as a distributor.
- 40:07Speaker 6: You're going in as an exhibit. Oh you put the
- 40:09Speaker 6: you know you spent money. Oh yeah, you you you
- 40:12Speaker 6: walk in and just try to get a free pass.
- 40:14Speaker 6: It's like, get out of here, dude, Like you didn't
- 40:15Speaker 6: put you didn't put no money, I mean no more
- 40:17Speaker 6: time up.
- 40:17Speaker 4: Like get out of here.
- 40:18Speaker 7: You spent big money to be there. Like okay, people
- 40:21Speaker 7: take you more serious, And that's the key, Like go
- 40:24Speaker 7: all in and show people like I'm serious, even if
- 40:27Speaker 7: it's putting up money, even if it's putting in like
- 40:29Speaker 7: tons of free time.
- 40:30Speaker 6: You know.
- 40:31Speaker 7: That's what I did when I first started doing video,
- 40:33Speaker 7: I did a lot of cheap stuff, a lot of
- 40:35Speaker 7: free stuff.
- 40:36Speaker 6: I'll still do free stuff, and.
- 40:39Speaker 4: That's what it's about.
- 40:39Speaker 6: It's about getting and doing and being out there. What's
- 40:42Speaker 6: that's a big thing too, is we'll still win win,
- 40:44Speaker 6: like finding the win win within a situation, like how
- 40:47Speaker 6: can this person get what they want and we get
- 40:48Speaker 6: what we want and we all work together.
- 40:52Speaker 8: Yeah, the win wins in life, right, the win wins
- 40:54Speaker 8: in life.
- 40:56Speaker 6: Everybody's trying to take a lot of times too, it's like, no,
- 40:59Speaker 6: let's just let's how can.
- 41:00Speaker 4: We both win?
- 41:00Speaker 8: You know?
- 41:02Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 41:04Speaker 8: No, sorry Dennis cut you off.
- 41:06Speaker 4: Jake, No, no, you're good.
- 41:07Speaker 7: Not your followers.
- 41:08Speaker 6: See if you had anything else to add to that.
- 41:11Speaker 8: Oh no, I know what you mean. Because sometimes when
- 41:15Speaker 8: especially when even when I do this like podcast, sometimes
- 41:18Speaker 8: I talk to people and they want a pitch to
- 41:20Speaker 8: come on the podcast, and it's almost like, well what
- 41:22Speaker 8: can I do for them? And I'm like, well, I mean,
- 41:25Speaker 8: come on here. They don't even know my name, but
- 41:27Speaker 8: my name's in the freaking title of the podcast, Like
- 41:30Speaker 8: how the hell do you not know my name is Dave?
- 41:31Speaker 8: You know what I mean? And it's like they'll write
- 41:33Speaker 8: they won't even say like hey or hello or even
- 41:35Speaker 8: though they'll just say like, Yo, I'm the blah blah
- 41:38Speaker 8: blah blah, and I'm like, you didn't even say like,
- 41:40Speaker 8: hey I enjoy the show or Hey Dave, this is
- 41:42Speaker 8: why I want to come on. It's just like just
- 41:45Speaker 8: let me bombarde you with how cool I am day
- 41:47Speaker 8: and so that I will be like, oh, please come on,
- 41:50Speaker 8: please jesus, come on. I mean, it's just you know
- 41:53Speaker 8: what I mean, It's just like you have to be
- 41:56Speaker 8: a lot more, you know what I mean, Like you
- 41:58Speaker 8: just said the win win, because I mean this is
- 42:01Speaker 8: a win win this podcast. Because you get something, I
- 42:03Speaker 8: get something. We both win and the listeners win too.
- 42:06Speaker 8: So you know it's not this whole one sided thing
- 42:08Speaker 8: where it's like what's in it for me? And you
- 42:11Speaker 8: know it doesn't matter if you get something, you know
- 42:13Speaker 8: what I mean.
- 42:14Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean I totally agree, dude.
- 42:16Speaker 4: You gotta you gotta, you gotta both work together.
- 42:20Speaker 6: It's just working together, man. It's it's just ultimately what
- 42:23Speaker 6: it's always been.
- 42:24Speaker 4: About and will be about.
- 42:25Speaker 8: I feel, yeah, especially because I mean, you know, this
- 42:30Speaker 8: is networking. You know, people hear on the podcast, they
- 42:32Speaker 8: reach out. It happens all the time. And I always
- 42:34Speaker 8: encourage people when when when when listeners want to talk
- 42:37Speaker 8: to a specific guests, tweet them and tell them something
- 42:40Speaker 8: about the episode, send them an email. Some people give
- 42:42Speaker 8: out their emails, send them a LinkedIn you a message
- 42:45Speaker 8: or whatever the hell Facebook, whatever, Uh, you know social
- 42:48Speaker 8: media channels they're on, and just say hey, you know,
- 42:50Speaker 8: I enjoyed the podcast and here's why, here's what I
- 42:52Speaker 8: got from it, not just like you know, hey, hey listen,
- 42:55Speaker 8: can can you give me this? Or that I had on?
- 42:59Speaker 4: Uh?
- 43:00Speaker 8: And Elvis or it was I always Butcher his name,
- 43:03Speaker 8: but who is one of the top producers in the world.
- 43:08Speaker 8: He's done Dallas Buyer's Club. He just did Mudbound, which
- 43:10Speaker 8: is a you know, up for a ton of awards,
- 43:13Speaker 8: and uh, it's on Netflix. And when I had him on,
- 43:16Speaker 8: people were asking like, hey, could you could you like
- 43:18Speaker 8: introduce us to Kasi in. I'm like, I don't even
- 43:20Speaker 8: know who the hell you are, so how would I
- 43:21Speaker 8: how would I possibly do this? You know, It's funny
- 43:24Speaker 8: because we get that all the time where people are
- 43:26Speaker 8: just like, hey, can you do this?
- 43:28Speaker 4: Could you can do that?
- 43:28Speaker 6: It's like, hold on a second. First of all, the
- 43:31Speaker 6: first thing you got to learn when you're pitching somebody is,
- 43:35Speaker 6: you got to get to know him for a little second.
- 43:37Speaker 4: You got to have an understanding of who they are.
- 43:39Speaker 6: There's no reason for somebody else to give up their
- 43:43Speaker 6: time unless you find out what the person's looking for
- 43:47Speaker 6: in you know, you.
- 43:48Speaker 7: Know, And this is why we share a lot of
- 43:50Speaker 7: things uh about about business and sales, because that is sales.
- 43:56Speaker 4: A good book.
- 43:56Speaker 7: Recommendation for that is how to influence friends and influence people.
- 44:00Speaker 7: It's about, you know, focused on what you know, who
- 44:03Speaker 7: the person is, and don't try to take so much.
- 44:08Speaker 4: That's all it is.
- 44:09Speaker 6: It's like this too, Like you know, you're you're hanging out,
- 44:11Speaker 6: you meet this girl and the first thing that comes
- 44:15Speaker 6: out of your mouth is like, hey, will you go
- 44:17Speaker 6: home and sleep with me? You know what I'm saying,
- 44:19Speaker 6: Like it just that's not how it works, you know
- 44:22Speaker 6: what I'm saying. You've got to you've got to build
- 44:24Speaker 6: a little bit of a relationship.
- 44:25Speaker 7: Every every big connection that we've made and that that
- 44:28Speaker 7: worked out good where we took years building slowly, you know,
- 44:33Speaker 7: and it's always what can I do for you?
- 44:36Speaker 6: How can I help you?
- 44:38Speaker 7: And from there it led to you know, different things,
- 44:42Speaker 7: and we're still building relationships and you need to ask that.
- 44:45Speaker 6: You need to ask them what you can do for them.
- 44:50Speaker 6: That's what I believe.
- 44:51Speaker 8: Yeah, it's like I always say, when you're gonna make
- 44:53Speaker 8: a connection, offer value, kill with kindness, and always be professional.
- 44:59Speaker 8: And that first one is all for value, which is
- 45:00Speaker 8: what can you do for them? And whether it's promotion
- 45:04Speaker 8: on social media like just retweeting something, you know what
- 45:07Speaker 8: I mean, or even something similar like buying, you know,
- 45:10Speaker 8: saying hey, look the movie's coming out. You know, maybe
- 45:12Speaker 8: I'll pick up a copy of it, or you know,
- 45:14Speaker 8: maybe I'll buy a shirt or again, a retweet costs nothing, right,
- 45:18Speaker 8: So it's stuff like that. You know, you're actually building
- 45:20Speaker 8: rapport with that person. And when you're doing you know,
- 45:23Speaker 8: face to face meetings at like a networking event, that's
- 45:26Speaker 8: the first thing you want to do, is you want
- 45:27Speaker 8: to say you talk about their stuff if you're introview,
- 45:29Speaker 8: you know what I mean, especially if you're gonna ask
- 45:31Speaker 8: that person for something. And when I see people just
- 45:33Speaker 8: go up and it's like hey, you know you're hey,
- 45:36Speaker 8: it's it's the Jolber Brothers. Hey guys, listen, I'm gonna
- 45:39Speaker 8: be making a movie soon. And you know, why don't
- 45:42Speaker 8: you guys come on board and this and that. You're like, well,
- 45:44Speaker 8: wait a minute, we don't know who the hell you are,
- 45:46Speaker 8: you know what I mean? Or asking you for locations
- 45:49Speaker 8: or whatever.
- 45:50Speaker 6: And then they go and then you go, well, what
- 45:52Speaker 6: are you fully funded? And they're like, well, no, that's
- 45:54Speaker 6: why we came to you. It's like, dude, yeah, but
- 45:56Speaker 6: first of all, give us a win win. If you
- 45:58Speaker 6: want us to produce your movie, you know, show the cash.
- 46:00Speaker 6: Say hey, I've got fifty grand I want to work
- 46:02Speaker 6: with you guys on a movie, which you produce it,
- 46:05Speaker 6: then you might have some some some wiggle.
- 46:07Speaker 4: Roam or something something to work with it. We can go, well,
- 46:10Speaker 4: what are you trying to do?
- 46:11Speaker 6: And maybe we can help you out because you know
- 46:13Speaker 6: it's fifty thousand. You know, it depends on your script,
- 46:16Speaker 6: do you know what I'm saying?
- 46:18Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 46:18Speaker 8: Yeah, And that's also happened to me too, by the way.
- 46:21Speaker 8: Is the whole Hey we want to get this funded?
- 46:23Speaker 8: And I go, okay, you know well that there has
- 46:26Speaker 8: to be something in it for me now, because if
- 46:28Speaker 8: I'm going to go and pitch a movie and look
- 46:30Speaker 8: for funds and all this other stuff, you know what
- 46:33Speaker 8: what's the deal here? And you know, and the cherry
- 46:35Speaker 8: on top of this is the fact that I'll tell
- 46:39Speaker 8: you a little story is one time I actually had
- 46:41Speaker 8: a person come on who I actually know, we met
- 46:44Speaker 8: years ago, and he wanted to come on the podcast
- 46:46Speaker 8: talk about his latest project and then wanted me to
- 46:49Speaker 8: come on board as a producer and and give him
- 46:51Speaker 8: my email list and do all this other stuff. And
- 46:54Speaker 8: when I when I said, well, well, what what is
- 46:56Speaker 8: my what's the contract for this? And he actually said
- 46:58Speaker 8: to me, you want to you want to get paid
- 46:59Speaker 8: for that? I'm like, uh, yeah, I would have something
- 47:03Speaker 8: involved in this.
- 47:03Speaker 4: I don't want to.
- 47:04Speaker 8: This isn't a charity case.
- 47:07Speaker 4: Yeah, man, I agree?
- 47:08Speaker 6: What with you? Man?
- 47:11Speaker 7: Uh?
- 47:12Speaker 8: It's as we talk about sort of this crazy stories
- 47:14Speaker 8: and stuff, what are some of the crazy stories you
- 47:16Speaker 8: guys have about just being pitched?
- 47:19Speaker 6: You know, I haven't had anything too crazy pitched wise.
- 47:22Speaker 6: I mean, I've had people you know that pitch you,
- 47:25Speaker 6: but it's just the way they go about it is
- 47:27Speaker 6: just totally off. One of the ways that I've pitched
- 47:31Speaker 6: and that's worked. The Burt Reynolds movie that I was
- 47:36Speaker 6: able to be a part of as a first a
- 47:37Speaker 6: d and producer like that connection. Took me two years
- 47:41Speaker 6: before I was able to work with that person.
- 47:43Speaker 7: And it was more or less of those little things
- 47:45Speaker 7: that you do in this beginning, slow baby steps. I'd
- 47:48Speaker 7: rather tell them, you know what they I think, you know,
- 47:51Speaker 7: worked for us than tell them what what not to do.
- 47:54Speaker 7: So yeah, I pa on a set and you get
- 47:56Speaker 7: a call sheet, and you know, I had bigger dreams
- 47:59Speaker 7: of doing bigger thing. So I took the call sheet
- 48:01Speaker 7: because there's big producers and stuff on there, and I
- 48:04Speaker 7: held on to that call sheet and found out who
- 48:06Speaker 7: the producers were and just you know, let my presence
- 48:10Speaker 7: be known. Cool, cool movie, did a great job, Everything
- 48:14Speaker 7: was awesome.
- 48:15Speaker 4: Was nice meeting you. That was it.
- 48:16Speaker 7: I think like a year later we end up going
- 48:18Speaker 7: to the premiere of the movie and saying, oh, hey,
- 48:20Speaker 7: you know, I'm Jake and this is Brian, great movie
- 48:24Speaker 7: you can did a great job on this. And then
- 48:26Speaker 7: another you know, six months ago by and hey, can
- 48:30Speaker 7: you tell, you know, take a look at my trailer.
- 48:32Speaker 7: I just need some expert advice. You did you did
- 48:34Speaker 7: a great job on your last film. It's just a
- 48:36Speaker 7: minute and then bow they give you some advice and
- 48:38Speaker 7: it's just slowly building over time, you know, and show
- 48:43Speaker 7: them that you and in the meantime actually do projects,
- 48:46Speaker 7: but still keep you know, it's it's it's doing the
- 48:49Speaker 7: projects and keep moving forward, but slowly, you know. Every
- 48:52Speaker 7: now and then reach out and say hi, how you
- 48:54Speaker 7: been and stuff like that. There's nothing wrong with that,
- 48:57Speaker 7: but to just come off with the ass right.
- 48:58Speaker 6: Away, it's not gonna.
- 49:01Speaker 7: I don't think it'll work unless you're you've already got
- 49:04Speaker 7: you know, unless you're.
- 49:06Speaker 8: Somebody it's like Gary Ve says, you gotta do the
- 49:10Speaker 8: jab jab jab, right hook and uh those jabs are give, give, give,
- 49:14Speaker 8: and the right hooks and ask.
- 49:16Speaker 4: That's the new schooling man. I learned everything from just
- 49:21Speaker 4: watching videos like that.
- 49:23Speaker 6: Like we love guys like that just I mean, because
- 49:25Speaker 6: it's like, you know, I never liked reading so much,
- 49:28Speaker 6: and I've read books and it's funny, I've read more
- 49:31Speaker 6: books when I was out of school than when I
- 49:33Speaker 6: did when I was in school. And now I love
- 49:37Speaker 6: like I love podcasts, I love videos, Grant and all
- 49:42Speaker 6: these guys like because there's something that they're doing that
- 49:46Speaker 6: led to their success. And if you can, if you
- 49:48Speaker 6: can read between the lines, you know and and and
- 49:52Speaker 6: not so much what they're saying, but what are they doing,
- 49:54Speaker 6: and then read between the lines of what they're saying,
- 49:57Speaker 6: like you can really become successful.
- 50:01Speaker 3: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor,
- 50:07Speaker 3: and now back to the show.
- 50:10Speaker 6: By following those guides as far as like those guys
- 50:14Speaker 6: are your mentors now, you know.
- 50:17Speaker 8: Yeah, and mentors through books, and mentors through podcasts, mentors
- 50:21Speaker 8: through videos.
- 50:22Speaker 6: Uh.
- 50:22Speaker 8: You know, it's a wide wide world now, right, yep.
- 50:26Speaker 6: I love it, man, And that's what's great about it
- 50:28Speaker 6: because I got people hit me up from like Nigeria
- 50:31Speaker 6: and shit like that's crazy to even think of. Like
- 50:34Speaker 6: we had these guys, you know, because we're pretty we're
- 50:36Speaker 6: down to earth guys, and we had these guys call
- 50:38Speaker 6: us from Nigeria FaceTime us and they're like, I'm like
- 50:42Speaker 6: holy like, hey, what's up man, They're like, oh, we're
- 50:45Speaker 6: from Nigeria.
- 50:46Speaker 4: I'm like, holy shit.
- 50:48Speaker 6: And we're talking a little bit and there they were
- 50:50Speaker 6: just calling to just because I think they were just
- 50:52Speaker 6: wanted They seen our lives and they were they were wanting,
- 50:54Speaker 6: you know, they want to talk to us on FaceTime.
- 50:57Speaker 6: And it's like, you know, it's almost like get to
- 50:59Speaker 6: the point because they're just like, oh, hosts filming and
- 51:03Speaker 6: it's like, well, you know you're calling about something, he
- 51:05Speaker 6: just calling a chat.
- 51:06Speaker 4: You know, it's finding out.
- 51:07Speaker 6: But I mean, it's just so cool that we can
- 51:11Speaker 6: have people in all these different countries that we're talking to.
- 51:15Speaker 6: Like just from our live video, we have a guy
- 51:17Speaker 6: Anthony who will probably listen to this. Our buddy Anthony,
- 51:22Speaker 6: who we met through Facebook Live and he lives in
- 51:26Speaker 6: Australia and he's doing movies out there and he loves
- 51:29Speaker 6: the content and we go back and forth, and his
- 51:32Speaker 6: buddies were in at the AFM and we were hanging
- 51:35Speaker 6: out with his buddies.
- 51:36Speaker 4: We have a video one of our live videos.
- 51:38Speaker 6: They're from Australia and it's like wow, like that's to me,
- 51:42Speaker 6: that's awesome, and that's just like so different.
- 51:47Speaker 4: You know.
- 51:47Speaker 7: We never had to leave the house to network, you know.
- 51:51Speaker 7: So we we went to the AFM, we got noticed
- 51:55Speaker 7: about five or a handful of people that seen our
- 51:57Speaker 7: lives because the FUGA filmmakers a big, big group, and people.
- 52:00Speaker 6: Actually coming in our booth like hey, where's the Jaber
- 52:04Speaker 6: Brothers And we're like, we don't even know them, and
- 52:06Speaker 6: it's like it's cool to be able to have that
- 52:08Speaker 6: already established relationship in a way to where they feel
- 52:13Speaker 6: like they know us. And it's like, oh, that's so cool,
- 52:15Speaker 6: you know what I mean.
- 52:16Speaker 7: And that's where the new future of everything is going.
- 52:20Speaker 7: You don't have to go out and network and fly around.
- 52:22Speaker 7: You can actually just do it over online, which is
- 52:24Speaker 7: so great, you know, And that's what all these these
- 52:27Speaker 7: guys are teaching and actually doing.
- 52:30Speaker 8: You know. You know when you mentioned that, Uh, the
- 52:33Speaker 8: Nigerians who called you. It reminds me because sometimes when
- 52:36Speaker 8: when I used to get people coming up to me,
- 52:39Speaker 8: no no, no, they didn't call me. They would be
- 52:41Speaker 8: those Nigerians that that contact me are usually those princes
- 52:44Speaker 8: who want money that I've just sent him money. But uh,
- 52:47Speaker 8: but what people usually contact me, they usually want to
- 52:50Speaker 8: just go grab coffee somewhere. And about a year or
- 52:53Speaker 8: two ago, I actually just fully stopped it. So if
- 52:56Speaker 8: I don't know you, when you want to you say hey, Dave,
- 52:57Speaker 8: can we grab coffee? The answers ninety nine point nine
- 53:01Speaker 8: percent of time gonna be no. The reason being it
- 53:05Speaker 8: really becomes like what can I do for them? And
- 53:10Speaker 8: I understand that, you know. I you know, I've you know,
- 53:13Speaker 8: I do this podcast, and I've done some really cool things.
- 53:15Speaker 8: I've worked with Might Shamlan's producer. You know, I did it.
- 53:19Speaker 8: I did it my own TV pilot. I've done this,
- 53:21Speaker 8: that and the other thing. But like at the end
- 53:23Speaker 8: of the day, though, it's like I I so and
- 53:25Speaker 8: I get it, trust me too. You feel like you
- 53:26Speaker 8: have so many options you get overwhelmed sometimes. But whenever
- 53:29Speaker 8: I go to those things, it always becomes it always
- 53:32Speaker 8: feels like what can I do for them? And it's
- 53:36Speaker 8: always like they want to pick my brain about stuff,
- 53:37Speaker 8: and then they go to this and that, and then
- 53:39Speaker 8: they get all downtrodden and I go, I, you know,
- 53:42Speaker 8: I just don't. This is why I always have to
- 53:43Speaker 8: have screeners of people, you know what I mean, Like
- 53:45Speaker 8: I have to be is if you come recommended or
- 53:47Speaker 8: something else, I'll talk to you on the phone. But
- 53:49Speaker 8: the whole coffee thing in general, I'm like, I'm not
- 53:51Speaker 8: traveling thirty minutes, you know, up up to Philly, up
- 53:56Speaker 8: to you know, North or whatever Philly just to grab
- 53:58Speaker 8: coffee with somebody, you know what I mean. I'd rather
- 54:00Speaker 8: just do a scrape chat for five minutes, you know
- 54:02Speaker 8: what I mean.
- 54:03Speaker 7: Right, And they don't and they don't know, you know,
- 54:05Speaker 7: they they're like they're in the weeds.
- 54:06Speaker 6: They don't see it.
- 54:07Speaker 7: So it's good that that people actually listen to this
- 54:10Speaker 7: stuff and trying to get the knowledge to to become better.
- 54:14Speaker 7: And that's why we try to preach a lot of
- 54:15Speaker 7: this different stuff in marketing and sales and and and
- 54:19Speaker 7: really trying to expand filmmaking and show people like you
- 54:23Speaker 7: got to open your eyes a little bit further than
- 54:25Speaker 7: just filmmaking, because that's where the win I believe is
- 54:29Speaker 7: is you know, being able to communicate period communication.
- 54:33Speaker 6: Because dude, like I've made these mistakes, like I've went
- 54:36Speaker 6: up to people straight for the ass, like and it's
- 54:39Speaker 6: learning by like going, yeah, that that didn't work out good,
- 54:42Speaker 6: you know, and in dissected why did that work out good?
- 54:45Speaker 6: H you know, maybe because I'm too blunt. I came
- 54:47Speaker 6: off that way, So you got to have an understanding
- 54:49Speaker 6: of that. I think that's how we try to talk
- 54:52Speaker 6: to talk is like, hey, this is what we've done,
- 54:55Speaker 6: this is what we've learned. Hopefully it works for you.
- 54:58Speaker 6: Some of it may not, some of it may and
- 55:01Speaker 6: you know, have at it like we work together. Let's
- 55:04Speaker 6: let's make some some fucking magic. Like let's really make
- 55:08Speaker 6: some magic to where the new generation has their voice,
- 55:12Speaker 6: you know, and they do through Facebook and like podcasts
- 55:15Speaker 6: and all this shit.
- 55:16Speaker 7: So I would say a good way to just approach anybody,
- 55:18Speaker 7: approach yourself. I'm sure approach us. It's just like, hey,
- 55:22Speaker 7: I heard your podcast. Awesome, man, the advice was absolutely amazing.
- 55:26Speaker 7: If you thought it was amazing, you know, thank you
- 55:29Speaker 7: for that, and that's it and leave it, you know,
- 55:31Speaker 7: leave it at that at least for you know, a
- 55:34Speaker 7: couple of weeks or whatever. Let it, let it marinate,
- 55:36Speaker 7: follow them, find out what their interest and what they
- 55:39Speaker 7: like and what's the win for them.
- 55:41Speaker 6: Yeah, follow up is key too. So if you do
- 55:43Speaker 6: reach out to somebody, you know, don't be scouraged if
- 55:45Speaker 6: they don't get back to you right away. Like I've
- 55:48Speaker 6: I've been contacting this one producer over and over again,
- 55:51Speaker 6: you know, every couple of months, just to build that connection.
- 55:55Speaker 6: And I think that's key is just stay it, stay present,
- 55:59Speaker 6: and when it works out, it will eventually if you
- 56:02Speaker 6: stay present enough, because most people want to see if
- 56:05Speaker 6: you're willing to put in the work, I feel, because
- 56:08Speaker 6: you know, if they had to put in the work,
- 56:10Speaker 6: you know, they're not just going to give you their
- 56:11Speaker 6: whole email list or their whole world because you're asking
- 56:15Speaker 6: for it. It's like, well, dude, like I've spent like
- 56:18Speaker 6: eight years of my life building this, Like I can't
- 56:21Speaker 6: just give you my the keys to my kingdom work
- 56:23Speaker 6: from my building. Like I got to get to know
- 56:24Speaker 6: you a little bit, trust you, maybe we work together
- 56:27Speaker 6: a little bit, and then now, yeah, this guy's cool,
- 56:30Speaker 6: I can trust them with my keys, you know what
- 56:31Speaker 6: I'm saying.
- 56:32Speaker 8: Yeah, I see exactly what you mean. And uh yeah,
- 56:35Speaker 8: you know it's all about you know, building those relationships
- 56:38Speaker 8: and also you know, building them, you know, just building
- 56:42Speaker 8: the relationships period, you know what I mean. And just
- 56:45Speaker 8: you want to want to sort of build it in
- 56:46Speaker 8: a in a in the right way. And and again,
- 56:49Speaker 8: I mean I think I've done the same thing too.
- 56:51Speaker 8: I've been there where I've just asked way too early.
- 56:54Speaker 8: And because you jump the gun, you're like, oh crap,
- 56:56Speaker 8: I'm never gonna see this person again. WHI should I say?
- 56:58Speaker 8: I don't know read my screenplay, so you're kind of
- 57:01Speaker 8: oh shit, uh, you know, and and and So if
- 57:05Speaker 8: everyone listening, if you took any advice from from either Jake,
- 57:10Speaker 8: Brian or myself, please just you know, tweet us and
- 57:12Speaker 8: let us know. And uh and so, I mean, guys,
- 57:16Speaker 8: we've been talking for about fifty five minutes or so now,
- 57:19Speaker 8: So just in closing, is there any anything you you
- 57:22Speaker 8: want to say Brian and Jake to sort of put
- 57:24Speaker 8: it period this end of this whole conversation.
- 57:27Speaker 4: Go make something, Just make you make it?
- 57:34Speaker 7: No, just uh, man, what we're doing? Man, trial and error, dude.
- 57:38Speaker 7: We you know, we go do something and you know
- 57:42Speaker 7: you just call it a fail.
- 57:43Speaker 6: You can call it. You know we tried and then
- 57:45Speaker 6: you try something else.
- 57:46Speaker 7: You know, we're gonna put out this haunted to our
- 57:48Speaker 7: show would be a super success.
- 57:49Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 57:50Speaker 7: We're gonna do our best, right, We're gonna put everything
- 57:52Speaker 7: we have into it and make it happen.
- 57:54Speaker 2: Uh.
- 57:55Speaker 7: If it doesn't do very well, fine figure this out.
- 57:58Speaker 6: Figure that out.
- 57:59Speaker 7: So the key is doing figuring it out along the way,
- 58:02Speaker 7: and it'll lead up to places you probably didn't expect.
- 58:05Speaker 4: You might be.
- 58:07Speaker 7: I never you know, could never speak in front of people.
- 58:10Speaker 7: And you know, but more you do it, it's weird.
- 58:13Speaker 7: The more you do it, the better you get at it.
- 58:15Speaker 7: And I've gotten a lot better. Actually, I can go
- 58:17Speaker 7: in front of a crowd now and actually, you know, speak,
- 58:19Speaker 7: I still turn super red. I'm red right now. It's
- 58:22Speaker 7: just like you know, speaking, But you become better as
- 58:26Speaker 7: you do. So that's why I just make your first film.
- 58:28Speaker 7: If you're a first time filmmaker, just go make something
- 58:31Speaker 7: and then reach out to us and say, hey, guys,
- 58:33Speaker 7: I heard your podcast. Great job, and then you know,
- 58:35Speaker 7: build that connection with us because we want to get
- 58:37Speaker 7: to know you guys, and send us your film if
- 58:40Speaker 7: you have it, and don't go straight to the end though,
- 58:43Speaker 7: you know, talk to us a little thing and get
- 58:45Speaker 7: to know me, and then I would love to look
- 58:46Speaker 7: at your stuff, you know, But don't just send it
- 58:49Speaker 7: because I don't know you and that's weird and I
- 58:50Speaker 7: don't know what I'm looking at.
- 58:51Speaker 4: So unless unless you're asked to send it.
- 58:54Speaker 6: You know, there's there's times where we put out calls
- 58:57Speaker 6: for scripts or whatever we're looking for on our Facebook page,
- 59:00Speaker 6: things like that, So that's when you want to send it.
- 59:02Speaker 6: It's knowing when to send it when they're when when
- 59:05Speaker 6: the win win is in place. Hey guys, I'm looking
- 59:07Speaker 6: for one location script. Oh I got one? Oh really, okay,
- 59:10Speaker 6: send it on over. Or Hey guys, I got a
- 59:13Speaker 6: movie that's finished. I'd love for you guys to take
- 59:15Speaker 6: a look at it. Maybe you can distribute it. Okay, cool,
- 59:17Speaker 6: let me look at it. Take a look at it.
- 59:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I love this.
- 59:19Speaker 6: Let's distribute it. Hey guys, I got a movie. I've
- 59:22Speaker 6: got some money. I want to pay you guys for
- 59:24Speaker 6: your time, put you on as producers and hire you
- 59:28Speaker 6: through your production company. Awesome, let's do it. Maybe we
- 59:30Speaker 6: can come on and work out a deal to where
- 59:33Speaker 6: we distribute it. So it's finding out what they're looking for,
- 59:37Speaker 6: going in for the ass the right time, and staying
- 59:40Speaker 6: present with the follow up.
- 59:42Speaker 8: Yeah, you have to treat everything like a skill. And
- 59:45Speaker 8: and just that's something I've learned too, is you have
- 59:47Speaker 8: to treat everything like a skill. You know, speaking of
- 59:49Speaker 8: public as a skill. Uh, you know, doing all sorts
- 59:52Speaker 8: of you know, being good at social media as a skill,
- 59:54Speaker 8: all the different skills on the film set. Writing's a skill,
- 59:57Speaker 8: Pitching is a skill.
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor,
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: and now back to the show.
- 1:00:09Speaker 8: The more I've learned about this stuff. The more I
- 1:00:12Speaker 8: realized it's all about if you treat everything like a
- 1:00:14Speaker 8: skill and you have to get good at it, it
- 1:00:17Speaker 8: kind of all sort of falls into place, you know
- 1:00:19Speaker 8: what I mean. They you have to do it to
- 1:00:21Speaker 8: get good at it, and you just have to do it,
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: which is, you know, you have to have action, right. Yeah,
- 1:00:27Speaker 8: at the end of the day, everything always involves action,
- 1:00:30Speaker 8: just like a character on a screenplay. Nobody likes a
- 1:00:32Speaker 8: passive protagonist.
- 1:00:35Speaker 6: No, no, Yeah, it's all about execution.
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: Man.
- 1:00:38Speaker 7: If you execute, if you search hard enough, you'll find
- 1:00:40Speaker 7: what you're looking for. It just you gotta search, you know,
- 1:00:42Speaker 7: really really hard.
- 1:00:43Speaker 6: And keep searching. Because like Sean Baker, it took him
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: what fifteen twenty years I think he said, yep, exactly,
- 1:00:51Speaker 6: and he wasn't. So now people think, oh, this Sean
- 1:00:54Speaker 6: Baker guy made it overnight. Well, dude, you don't know.
- 1:00:57Speaker 6: He's been doing it for fifteen twenty years. But you
- 1:00:59Speaker 6: may end up like Robert Ariguez who first feature got
- 1:01:04Speaker 6: some buzz going.
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: You know, you just never know.
- 1:01:06Speaker 6: That's why we say just start doing something and be creative.
- 1:01:11Speaker 8: Yeah, excellent, that's excellent. Guys and It's always good to
- 1:01:15Speaker 8: keep things like that in the perspective because there is
- 1:01:17Speaker 8: no overnight successes. That's the number one rule. There is
- 1:01:19Speaker 8: no overnight successes.
- 1:01:21Speaker 6: Were you talking about? Man?
- 1:01:25Speaker 8: Hey, guys, where can people find you out online?
