- 00;00;00;02 - 00;00;22;04 Speaker 1 If you found out we weren't alone. If someone showed you proved it to you, would that frighten you? Hello and welcome to film curious. Today we're going to be talking about Disclosure Day. I'm Ashley, and I'm here with Pete to talk about Steven Spielberg's latest film after five decades of filmmaking. And Steven, if I can call him Steven. 00;00;22;04 - 00;00;37;10 Speaker 1 Mr. Spielberg is is one of the goats, is one of the all time greats. And I know Pete has well, I feel Pete has an encyclopedia or a textbook on Spielberg and his birthday, so. 00;00;37;12 - 00;00;38;04 Speaker 2 I'm a big fan. 00;00;38;07 - 00;00;41;20 Speaker 1 Small fan. We'll just say it. 00;00;41;22 - 00;01;04;18 Speaker 2 It's a little bit of a neck. Got some, got some memorabilia in the house. So this is, you know, technically you can say fourth alien film where we have, you know, E.T., Close Encounters, then whether or not you want to include War of the worlds, I think is kind of dealer's choice because it wasn't based, you know, on something that he had originally written or anything like that. 00;01;04;18 - 00;01;10;28 Speaker 2 So I don't know if it really gets involved in this. It doesn't seem that he involves it in it, in some of the things that I've seen. 00;01;10;29 - 00;01;27;29 Speaker 1 Yeah, one of the recent I mean, he's had it in a few interviews that he looks at War of the worlds as his reaction to nine over 11. Yeah, I believe so. I think he kind of is keeping this a little bit outside of his alien obsession fascination. 00;01;28;05 - 00;01;52;13 Speaker 2 Yeah. But the thing is with with those alien obsession, you know, films that are very much about the wonder of what is out there. There's always the the seam running in the background, very much in the foreground of broken families, you know, Elliott's parents or divorced, and the father's never coming back. And everything that that puts that family through. 00;01;52;17 - 00;02;24;12 Speaker 2 And with Close Encounters, neary is leaving in many, many ways and in the ultimate way at the end, his family. And that's about a family that is very broken as well. And around them are these events that are going on where disclosure doesn't. It has touches of that with Emily Blunt's characters background, but it isn't. As you know, it isn't really the thing as it was in those other films. 00;02;24;12 - 00;02;56;02 Speaker 2 This one more revolves around what would people do? What would be the reaction if something like this round up to be true? And what I find very interesting about the movie is I think it's really made a litmus test of an audience, because we are, for a good reason, very, very cynical nowadays that there's other people, there's a lot of people who are very much online who are cynical for views and clicks. 00;02;56;03 - 00;03;23;03 Speaker 2 You know, it's like their personality, like, oh, look at how ironic. I laugh at everything and that kind of dumb shit. And you know, this really like, had if this was a trap for those people, man, did they fall for it? In my opinion, I think most of the movie I really enjoy the some that I wish was tighter or maybe had less. 00;03;23;05 - 00;03;43;18 Speaker 2 Yeah, I think less would have been a lot better for me in a lot of spots in this film. But I like the overall, you know, story and the seam and the messaging. And Emily Blunt puts on a hell of a performance and oh, so does. Yeah. Look up her name, I apologize. 00;03;43;23 - 00;03;44;13 Speaker 1 Hello. Who plays. 00;03;44;13 - 00;03;46;07 Speaker 2 Jane, a news anchor. 00;03;46;12 - 00;03;55;03 Speaker 1 Oh, you know what I actually did look her up, and I noted her because I found that performance incredible. Let me find it in my name. 00;03;55;04 - 00;03;55;16 Speaker 2 Where did that. 00;03;55;16 - 00;03;58;05 Speaker 1 Come from? So, like, share. 00;03;58;07 - 00;03;58;25 Speaker 2 Her name. 00;03;58;27 - 00;04;15;20 Speaker 1 Sorry. Yeah. Her name is Courtney Grace, and she actually used to be a news anchor and TV reporter. So now she's transitioned into to acting. But, yeah, she has got some real world experience reporting the news as a name. 00;04;15;21 - 00;04;54;25 Speaker 2 Yeah, yeah. I guess depending on, like, what events in our recent ish history she's had to report on, but, you know, thought she was excellent in that role. Usually those are very strange little bits. But that that actually that end sequence is one of the things where I wish would have shown a little less. Maybe there is a the very, very specifically if we talk about Close Encounters in E.T., that was in the age of practical effects, and we are no longer really in the age of that, it's an option and a lot of people still use it. 00;04;54;27 - 00;05;06;11 Speaker 2 This film, I think, would have benefited from that a bunch or just hiding things better. I don't I mean, I don't know how much we're going to worry about spoilers. The movie's been out for a couple of weeks already, right? 00;05;06;12 - 00;05;10;27 Speaker 1 I mean, I'll always because I'm a big I hate spoilers, so I'll always acknowledge. 00;05;10;27 - 00;05;11;21 Speaker 2 That. 00;05;11;23 - 00;05;18;01 Speaker 1 In this conversation. I think. I think it's okay though. Like if we just acknowledge that you're going to get spoilers. 00;05;18;01 - 00;05;19;05 Speaker 2 There's going to be spoilers. 00;05;19;06 - 00;05;19;23 Speaker 1 That's all. 00;05;19;23 - 00;05;23;05 Speaker 2 So guess what? The fucking aliens in this movie. I mean, that's the thing. 00;05;23;09 - 00;05;29;01 Speaker 1 I mean, the trailers. Surprise! I was actually surprised that the trailers showed so much. 00;05;29;03 - 00;05;31;24 Speaker 2 So I know I only watched like I. 00;05;31;24 - 00;05;31;28 Speaker 1 Think. 00;05;31;28 - 00;05;37;13 Speaker 2 The second first trailer did and then that was it. Because they, they can't help themselves. They got promoted. 00;05;37;15 - 00;05;56;16 Speaker 1 Oh no no, no. It's always the last minute and a half of a trailer of the second trailer that just ruins it. It's just. Yeah. So. And I couldn't really avoid it. I feel like they were showing it a lot during the NBA playoffs and in finals, and that second trailer had had an alien in it, I think showed the alien. 00;05;56;18 - 00;06;20;24 Speaker 2 If you view yourself as a jinx whenever you watched the games, you get to avoid that stuff. So that was how I worked it. Yeah, but yeah, I would have been, so I would have. I would love to see a version of this film where we either don't see them or when we do, there's a practical effect, because it's so weird to me that that my brain has this reaction. 00;06;20;26 - 00;06;48;00 Speaker 2 Typically, Spielberg's Aliens look like classic, except of E.T. you know, he's kind of become his own iconic design. But like even the aliens and Close Encounters, they resemble what you think of. Yeah, of what you think of as an alien. Right. And when I see that in a movie mixed a bunch, you know, human beings, when it's that CG, it doesn't look like it's in the room. 00;06;48;00 - 00;07;00;02 Speaker 2 And the reason that my brain has that trip is because I'm so kind of familiar with that look, that when it looks fake, I say, well, that's not even though it's not a real thing. 00;07;00;03 - 00;07;06;21 Speaker 1 And the whole thing is supposed to be there disclosing real footage, right? So yeah, that way you kind of. 00;07;06;24 - 00;07;30;29 Speaker 2 And being like in the room with the people, you know, the one that they, that they've kept alive, I just. Why why are we not doing that practically? I wish I knew maybe they tried some things and it didn't move or work the way that they wanted it to, but man, it really took me out of the ending, which there were a number of moments in this movie. 00;07;30;29 - 00;07;50;14 Speaker 2 I got real emotionally involved. Yeah. And I really think that that effect kind of threw me off at the end where I was like, oh God, you know, it was as distracting as when, like, the aliens showed up in Kingdom of the Crystal skulls, they have that same sort of like this isn't in the room saying, like, it doesn't have that effect. 00;07;50;14 - 00;07;52;25 Speaker 2 I don't know what. How did you react to that? 00;07;52;26 - 00;08;02;08 Speaker 1 I think I was just in it, so I didn't worry too much about it. Was which specifically what footage specifically? 00;08;02;11 - 00;08;06;05 Speaker 2 The footage is one thing. I can get away with that because it's like a little Granier. It's that. 00;08;06;09 - 00;08;07;15 Speaker 1 Is the one that. 00;08;07;16 - 00;08;09;12 Speaker 2 Comes into the room. 00;08;09;14 - 00;08;10;18 Speaker 1 Oh, okay. 00;08;10;20 - 00;08;12;10 Speaker 2 Yeah. All right. We'll into the newsroom. 00;08;12;12 - 00;08;14;23 Speaker 1 000 like the the the big one. 00;08;14;23 - 00;08;15;08 Speaker 2 And he. 00;08;15;09 - 00;08;17;13 Speaker 1 Steps out of the. Okay, okay. 00;08;17;14 - 00;08;38;24 Speaker 2 Yeah. Like he's like, because he's supposed to be in the same room as all these people, right? It looked like a fantastic video game because video games. Look at that good man in there cutscenes. But it did not look like it was something that was in the room. And again, I just wish they would have done something practical. 00;08;38;26 - 00;08;39;13 Speaker 1 Yeah. 00;08;39;16 - 00;08;40;07 Speaker 2 For that. 00;08;40;08 - 00;08;54;25 Speaker 1 I mean, I knew it wasn't practical, but I think I was just so in the moment that it didn't really. I kind of just let myself go at a certain point in the movie, which like, I think that's just what Spielberg does to you. A lot of times when you're watching the film, I always think I was just caught up. 00;08;54;26 - 00;09;10;01 Speaker 1 I was caught up in the moment. But yeah, yeah, I guess I if I watched it again, maybe I would notice that he, he wasn't feeling real, but I think I was just caught up in, in the movie where it didn't bother me too much at that point. 00;09;10;02 - 00;09;30;23 Speaker 2 Yeah. No. Outside of that though, there, I really enjoyed so much of it. But there are some really odd choices. One of them, I think, though, a lot of people, again, I've seen a couple of comments on this and I it really just takes me as the I'm so I'm so smart. Everyone else is so dumb kind of comments. 00;09;30;26 - 00;09;49;18 Speaker 2 The bit with the phone driving back, you know, over the phone and stuff. See, I got a little bit of a kick out of that because in a lot of movies, I'd like to short your phone and someone throws it out the window and I'm like, that phone's fine. If totally fine. Like what it do land on the grass on the highway. 00;09;49;19 - 00;10;08;24 Speaker 2 Like that's not broken at all. So you do actually have to, like, run over a phone sometimes to get it to break or break it in your hands, which would then, you know, shatter the glass in your hands. You cut your hand wide open. So I thought that was actually kind of funny that we took 30s, I don't know, I actually have to destroy this phone. 00;10;08;26 - 00;10;33;01 Speaker 1 I think it just especially with Emily Blunt character of Margaret. I think that the point is always to make her very human like she is experiencing, and her even her boyfriend is very human like they are such a human couple like this would. These two people wouldn't be able to smash the phone correctly. I picture this boyfriend not being able to run over the phone correctly. 00;10;33;01 - 00;10;40;07 Speaker 1 I picture her then like I thought it was a great little. You know, humans are full of errors and they're not perfect. 00;10;40;08 - 00;10;55;12 Speaker 2 And but that's the thing though, people can't watch movies, and when people act like humans, they go along with it because they're like, well, I'm watching a movie. You know, I would never do this. This would never happen. It's like it happens all the time. What are you talking about? 00;10;55;12 - 00;10;57;19 Speaker 1 That would totally happen. It's like this big of a. 00;10;57;19 - 00;11;12;21 Speaker 2 Block, you know, not not the phone specifically, but I mean, like, people just making bad decisions in high pressure situations and stuff like that and doing dumb shit. That's what people do. It's like our biggest it's our fucking characteristic. 00;11;12;23 - 00;11;33;28 Speaker 1 Yeah. I mean, I appreciated to that. I just felt like all of the human characters behaved very human like. I like Wyatt Russell being the boyfriend and being like, she's gone crazy. And he calls the doctor when he's back at the gas station because he's like, she's lost her mind, you know? And I appreciated that. That was a very human reaction to be like, she's she's gone. 00;11;33;28 - 00;11;35;03 Speaker 1 I'm going to call. 00;11;35;05 - 00;11;54;27 Speaker 2 And that's very Close Encounters. You know, that's that's, you know, the wife. That's mine's blanking. But you know, that's near his wife being like, you're out of your mind. I'm taking the kids and getting the fuck out of here. Yeah. You know, she doesn't stick around like I'm going to stand by you, you know, blah, blah, blah. She leaves at a certain point. 00;11;54;27 - 00;12;17;01 Speaker 2 She's like, that's enough, you know? So yeah, I think that Wyatt Russell plays a really good, you know, just sort of dude, just like guy. He's really, really good at it, which is, you know, that his father excelled at it. And and he does. He does it pretty damn well to one of the other odd decisions, though, just to kind of get those off the plate at the end. 00;12;17;03 - 00;12;39;10 Speaker 2 I get why Colin Firth just sort of is like, it's done, you know, nothing. We can keep trying this. It's not going to work. They're going to get this out one way or the other and just sort of resigns himself to that ending. For him, it was the other guy who was who was like, we're just going to let her get away with this and. 00;12;39;12 - 00;12;40;00 Speaker 1 His. 00;12;40;02 - 00;12;49;16 Speaker 2 Stage and just exit stage, right? With like eight other body armed guys leaving. That was confusing to me. I didn't understand. 00;12;49;19 - 00;12;51;07 Speaker 1 Why wouldn't I need a watch? 00;12;51;08 - 00;12;54;29 Speaker 2 I don't I don't understand why he didn't do something drastic. 00;12;55;02 - 00;12;57;10 Speaker 1 Yeah. I mean. You know that, you know. 00;12;57;11 - 00;12;57;21 Speaker 2 Because. 00;12;57;21 - 00;13;01;22 Speaker 1 He felt that he should have done something. He tried to put himself. 00;13;01;23 - 00;13;04;07 Speaker 2 He tried to push him into a trainer earlier in the movie. 00;13;04;08 - 00;13;05;08 Speaker 1 Right. 00;13;05;11 - 00;13;05;26 Speaker 2 So. 00;13;05;28 - 00;13;06;12 Speaker 1 Yeah. 00;13;06;13 - 00;13;32;00 Speaker 2 He was in this moment, which that moment, you can have him do that. You can have him make that decision. But I want a little bit more as to why he makes that decision. At that moment. I got why Colin Firth got it. Yeah. I understood why he was finally like, we're done. Because he's smart enough to know that he is done, that they they have lost this fight. 00;13;32;03 - 00;13;43;29 Speaker 2 I'm not sure the other guy is smart enough to understand that he lost that fight yet. So that kind of raises questions of just why, you know, I don't know. I didn't find that very satisfying. 00;13;44;01 - 00;13;45;07 Speaker 1 I think the. 00;13;45;10 - 00;13;46;07 Speaker 2 That wrapped up. 00;13;46;08 - 00;13;59;08 Speaker 1 Yeah, I think that the problem with that character is he kind of was just a sidekick goon. It felt like for most of the film where I feel the other characters are all pretty well rounded. 00;13;59;10 - 00;14;00;28 Speaker 2 I don't know anything about. 00;14;01;00 - 00;14;27;20 Speaker 1 Yeah, well, we know is he's. Yeah. Like the, the right hand man who is either brawn. I guess he's the muscle. I don't know, but that's the thing. He's just he's dumb muscle. I'm not sure. But yeah, I could agree with you on that. It was a little bit of a give us give us a reason why he gave up then or I don't know, I actually probably would have been fine with him just standing and watching then, you know, because if he's given me order to stand down or. 00;14;27;20 - 00;14;31;05 Speaker 2 Just Firth's saying, like, we lost, like, this. 00;14;31;05 - 00;14;31;27 Speaker 1 Is. 00;14;31;29 - 00;14;58;09 Speaker 2 Like they're going to get it eventually, you know, look at the room you're in. These people are not with you. I'm the only one who was like, just that. Just something simple like that, I think would have really made it, like, ease a lot. Ease a lot more into it. The other thing that I wish we just got more of, but I'm not sure in what way we could have, because it just also leads to what I think is the greatest strength of the film. 00;14;58;09 - 00;15;22;18 Speaker 2 The thing I like the most in the beginning of the film, the first act, like the first 15 minutes, we have that really great conversation between, let me get some Josh O'Connor and Eve Hewson. So Daniel and Jane about, should you put this out? Who you know, what makes you the person that should decide that this should go out? 00;15;22;18 - 00;15;50;24 Speaker 2 Because if you take a somewhat decent look at the history of humanity, they don't deal well with situations that are foreign, even in like, people who are their fucking neighbors. And now you're asking them to work together, you know, towards this other thing and not burn everything to the ground in fear. 00;15;50;27 - 00;15;51;09 Speaker 1 Yeah. 00;15;51;10 - 00;16;14;05 Speaker 2 And I thought that was a great argument. And we we have it there. And then we have it a little bit with Colman Domingo and, and Colin Firth later in like the third act, when, when they get to interact or at the end of the second act. But I don't know, I just, I feel like there's just, there's a little bit more that I wanted. 00;16;14;05 - 00;16;25;28 Speaker 2 And I think it actually does come from Eve, because I do get why Eve flips her her intentions by the end of the movie because they, like, invaded her mind. Like, why would you help these people? 00;16;26;00 - 00;16;26;08 Speaker 1 Yeah. 00;16;26;10 - 00;16;47;10 Speaker 2 But her idea on I don't think this is a good idea was hers. That wasn't someone stepping in for her and speaking for her. So I think I wanted a little more from her, actually, from her character, to get her to the point where she's all in on letting everyone know. 00;16;47;13 - 00;17;13;03 Speaker 1 I think this is kind of, at least for me. I took it as when Jane hears from she makes a phone call towards the end to the nun, and she's asking her about it. If I have definitive proof, you know, and the nun, I can't verbatim remember what she says, but she goes, Jane, I never thought you had. 00;17;13;05 - 00;17;17;17 Speaker 1 You lost your faith in God. I think you lost your faith in humanity. 00;17;17;20 - 00;17;18;18 Speaker 2 I love that line. 00;17;18;18 - 00;17;41;13 Speaker 1 It was so good. And I think it was to point out to Jane, and I think it helps Jane with kind of a realization that she needs to. I think her turning point is the oh, I should I need to trust in my fellow man, my fellow people, that they can handle this information because she takes in this information and she can handle it. 00;17;41;13 - 00;18;02;06 Speaker 1 And I think her and Daniel and Daniel has this full confidence that everybody needs to know right from the start that he thinks that people can handle it. And so I think that conversation with the nun is kind of Jane's turning point or epiphany of being like, yes, people do need to know and and kind of having faith in people again. 00;18;02;07 - 00;18;13;21 Speaker 1 I mean, I don't know if there were there were enough details throughout the film to, you know, get us to to the the total turnaround that Jane has. 00;18;13;22 - 00;18;45;05 Speaker 2 It's like this close for me. It's so fucking close. That's the thing. It's it's really, really it's sliver thin. But the, the thing, the counter to that of my own problem with it is you don't know what happens next day. Yeah. And that's, I mean, for all you have to answer that question on your own. And then that answer very much informs on yourself. 00;18;45;07 - 00;18;50;00 Speaker 2 And that's the part of the film I find the most fascinating. 00;18;50;02 - 00;19;02;24 Speaker 1 And they are on the brink of others supposed to be on the brink of World War three. There's supposed to be high tensions happening, too. So I guess you add that in and it's like, what? What's humanity going to do and. 00;19;02;24 - 00;19;32;24 Speaker 2 How they don't resolve that. You know, it's not like in the abyss where, you know, they come up from the water and you're like, oh, negotiations have come through. We have world peace now. Like that shit doesn't happen. You it's completely on you. What happens? Day one this goes out everywhere. And to watch this movie and fixate on like a local news channel, what would they do? 00;19;32;26 - 00;20;00;01 Speaker 2 It's like, what? Who cares? Like, what a weird thing to get, like, hung up on. It's just strange. The way people watch movies nowadays is so weird to me. Where I don't know, there's there's this. I'm very guilty of it. There's this thing of, like, when you go to a concert and the opening band comes on, there was this old joke that, like all the people who were there to see the band, they just sit in the back of their arms crossed. 00;20;00;01 - 00;20;18;09 Speaker 2 They're like, impress me, which is a stupid thing to do, but we all do it. And I think that's a lot of audiences nowadays. They're like, I'm smarter than everything. You have to be smarter than me. And it's like, that's not what this movie's trying to do. That's not what most movies trying to do. It's such a weird approach. 00;20;18;15 - 00;20;46;26 Speaker 1 I mean, I, I did think it was an interesting choice to have it, but I think it was trying to say that he wants that kind of community where the world can be connected in a way that's not so siloed, the information isn't siloed. And like this disclosure, I think, is like him trying to say that, okay, it was such a big story on discovery. 00;20;46;28 - 00;21;05;26 Speaker 1 When it's released to the world, no one's going to withhold it. And it is the the broadcasts are all going to want to broadcast it. Everyone's going to be able to see it on their phone and all that, like. So I think that's what you're trying to say. I mean, I'm not going to I wasn't I'm not heavily critical of that decision to do that. 00;21;05;28 - 00;21;18;10 Speaker 1 But it is kind of like if you go to the president's like, what are the odds? Everybody, all at once, all over the world was going to be watching this, this footage. But, I mean. 00;21;18;17 - 00;21;19;09 Speaker 2 I mean, everyone's. 00;21;19;15 - 00;21;20;22 Speaker 1 People didn't. 00;21;20;24 - 00;21;22;01 Speaker 2 I mean, I mean, we. 00;21;22;05 - 00;21;23;06 Speaker 1 Watch. 00;21;23;09 - 00;21;39;14 Speaker 2 Me and you watch the parade today. There were millions of people in downtown. One half of them were watching through their phone with notifications on, I'm sure, and a notification would have come up somewhere from an Instagram post or blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And it would have been like, the fuck is this. 00;21;39;18 - 00;21;40;19 Speaker 1 Is released? 00;21;40;20 - 00;21;45;20 Speaker 2 So like, yeah, actually, I do think that would happen. I. 00;21;45;22 - 00;21;48;03 Speaker 1 Guess it would spread like wildfire. 00;21;48;07 - 00;22;11;27 Speaker 2 It would. I mean, when you think about think about a time when we didn't have as much as we have now, when you look back at nine over 11, everyone was in front of their TV like within 30 minutes of the first plane. And that was without that, largely without, you know, the way that everything is so interconnected right now with communication. 00;22;12;00 - 00;22;14;28 Speaker 2 If something like this happen. Yeah, I think everything. 00;22;15;00 - 00;22;22;08 Speaker 1 That the broadcast would get through and not you wouldn't, it wouldn't have to like work its way through an algorithm. 00;22;22;10 - 00;22;37;10 Speaker 2 I think if if enough people put something on Instagram, you're going to wind up, you know, all you need is one big account, right? Trust me, as someone who didn't have any followers on Instagram and then like two months later, had a couple of, you know, like over 20,000. 00;22;37;12 - 00;22;38;05 Speaker 1 Star. 00;22;38;07 - 00;22;59;01 Speaker 2 Or, you know, that's the thing, it has nothing to do with me at all. It was just that a couple of things that I posted were reposted by very popular people, and suddenly they have 5 million views. Like, that's crazy. But that's how that works now. That's how, you know, that's how you used to work anyway. 00;22;59;03 - 00;23;04;20 Speaker 1 So then so what was so what's the complaint then at the end of the what were people complaining about? 00;23;04;22 - 00;23;22;09 Speaker 2 I don't know, I don't know, they just make things up in their head because they think they're smarter than everything. And again, I don't care if you didn't like the movie, that's totally fine. Like, that's the individual, but it's the way that they present an argument and you hear it all the time. With all movies, it's the worst writing. 00;23;22;11 - 00;23;46;07 Speaker 2 It's terrible. What? Against what? Like, what are you doing? What is that basis against? Because I've seen movies that are terrible and they're like, they're very specific. But nowadays the only thing you can say is that it's terrible or is amazing. And that's kind of and that's kind of the movie has, you know, a little bit to say about that kind of stuff too. 00;23;46;07 - 00;24;05;12 Speaker 2 But then I think ultimately the problem is this also with with this movie and with some audience, I mean, I looked actually the majority of people actually really liked the movie. I was surprised because as a friend of mine said, and Mike Aiello, we were talking about this film a lot after he had gotten out of this movie. 00;24;05;12 - 00;24;29;19 Speaker 2 I had seen it the day before, and he had said, and I, I had actually written it in my letterbox nonsense before we talked about it. He said, I think the problem, the biggest problem with the film is that people are too cynical and the movie is hopeful. It is. And Spielberg's always been like that, and he's even been accused of that when he's not. 00;24;29;21 - 00;24;55;05 Speaker 2 AI is a really good example of that. Where I remember there was. Oh, they reunited this kid with his dead mother just so you could have a happy ending. Like, dude, that saying that clone that he's spending a day with dies the next day that was already established. This is horrifyingly sad because the mother that he had never accepted him and never did. 00;24;55;07 - 00;25;19;10 Speaker 2 And you'll never get that again. And Minority Report is, I think is another one, because if you're a fan of Philip K Dick, silk Dick is love to show you one ending. But that's not actually what happened. And you can watch Minority Report and really go in the other direction on it. But when he's, you know, in the overall of of his of his filmography. 00;25;19;11 - 00;25;44;22 Speaker 2 Yeah, there's, there's hope at the end of his films. And this was certainly one of them. And I don't think an audience right now, a good smattering of an audience, even if they enjoyed the rest of the film, I think the ending might be hard for them to kind of contend with that. The next day everything goes well because we're in a place right now where people don't feel like that. 00;25;44;22 - 00;26;06;27 Speaker 2 And again, for excellent reason. Shit, I don't feel like that. But I'm willing to at least break free of that a little bit while I watch this, because it's nice to view someone's idea where this does go well, and there is a positive to it, and I love that it ends on. Listen. 00;26;06;29 - 00;26;08;05 Speaker 1 Yeah. Absolutely love. 00;26;08;07 - 00;26;08;11 Speaker 2 That. 00;26;08;11 - 00;26;09;02 Speaker 1 Was. 00;26;09;04 - 00;26;16;04 Speaker 2 There are some fucking banger moments in this movie. Like again I think it's I think it's uneven overall. 00;26;16;05 - 00;26;16;18 Speaker 1 Yeah. 00;26;16;19 - 00;26;36;13 Speaker 2 But Jesus went it nails it's moments. The entire sequence of Emily Blunt going to work and like going live that is insanely good. Like she's out of her fucking mind. Good. The camera's out of its mind. Good. And then I love the the memory of her as a child. 00;26;36;15 - 00;26;39;14 Speaker 1 Yeah. I love in the lead up to it. 00;26;39;16 - 00;26;40;20 Speaker 2 Yeah. 00;26;40;22 - 00;27;05;18 Speaker 1 Like she was. The performance was amazing of her not wanting to go into the house of her yelling about it. It's my memories. It's my story. Even she absolutely is like, I'm please don't pray to me. I'm no, no, God. I'm like, this isn't your story. And I think that. Yeah, no, but go ahead. Yeah. I just thought that the whole thing was brilliant. 00;27;05;20 - 00;27;30;20 Speaker 2 But that whole point, that's another like great point that's in the film. And this, this will be like my Sheila fanboy ism. He's too good sometimes at what he does and he makes it look easy. And I just I think that it's easy to overlook a lot of shit in the movies because, like, what you just talked about with the woman bowing to her. 00;27;30;23 - 00;27;41;29 Speaker 2 This is a this isn't a positive situation. And even that moment for all of us as watchers all probably made us a little uncomfortable where you're like, oh no, no, no. 00;27;42;01 - 00;27;43;13 Speaker 1 Why is she signing that? 00;27;43;20 - 00;28;20;10 Speaker 2 You shouldn't be doing that at all. That's that's not that's not helpful, folks. We've got people who worship people right now in the world that would as easily piss on them, then give them a dollar, you know, and they are worshiped and deified and oh my God, it's our Christ sent this person like it's fucking insane. So you actually get this, this dark idea that could that could happen from this very positive thing. 00;28;20;10 - 00;28;46;14 Speaker 2 But it's just there for a second, you know, on screen, it's just there for a second and you could walk right by it. I mean, maybe I'm misinterpreting it, but when she when that woman dropped to the knee, I was like, no, no, no, no, no, no. Like we don't we don't want any of that. But yeah, I thought that was a it's the movie's filled with little moments like that that I really, really enjoy. 00;28;46;17 - 00;29;05;04 Speaker 2 I also really, I really enjoy. If you don't know, the Nixon story is a big quote. True story. Oh that's that that's 50s. That's a Ralph Kramden. It's what's his name, Ralph Kramden from The Honeymooners. Okay, what the fuck was his name? 00;29;05;06 - 00;29;07;16 Speaker 1 He had the character's name. Are you saying that. 00;29;07;17 - 00;29;12;27 Speaker 2 That's that's his name, right? My brain is, I got to look it up or I'll go crazy. 00;29;13;05 - 00;29;15;02 Speaker 1 Is the actor's name Ralph two? 00;29;15;04 - 00;29;16;08 Speaker 2 No. Jackie Gleason. 00;29;16;08 - 00;29;18;06 Speaker 1 Oh, gosh. Yes, yes. 00;29;18;07 - 00;29;45;05 Speaker 2 So Jackie Gleason was a big was a big UFO person. He was massive into UFOs. And one of the all time stories is that Nixon brought him down and showed him UFO wreckage. And that's always been like, a big story. And to see it in here and I was wondering, I was like, they stare, able to say Nixon's name, but they didn't say Gleason's name. 00;29;45;05 - 00;29;53;23 Speaker 2 And I wonder if it was some sort of thing where, like, the family didn't sign off for it or some weird reason, but but yeah, that's actually like, that's always been one of these. 00;29;53;23 - 00;29;54;23 Speaker 1 Big I had. 00;29;54;24 - 00;29;56;01 Speaker 2 So it talks. 00;29;56;01 - 00;29;59;06 Speaker 1 About of alien conspiracies or anything like that. 00;29;59;07 - 00;30;33;08 Speaker 2 All that shit that's in the movie is based on sightings and things that people proclaim to have happened, which is very fascinating. And he does sneak in. There is a shot at the end where there is a ship flying, and it's not because these movies are not connected and blah blah blah, but there is a shot at the end where one of the released footages is of a rather large ship over a Devil's Tower esque formation, which I thought was pretty funny, you know, just to sort of, you know, give that like, yes, I fucking know. 00;30;33;11 - 00;30;46;20 Speaker 2 Like, you know, I've made these other movies to but yeah, like, as an audience member, if I don't know that, my God, does that. Nixon things seem strange as fuck, but my. 00;30;46;21 - 00;30;48;16 Speaker 1 Hope seems strange to me. 00;30;48;22 - 00;31;07;27 Speaker 2 I know again, I think people are, you know, they just. Everything's ironic. Everything's an ironic laugh. And I wonder, like, how many people saw that and said, is that, is that like a real thing? And looked it up and then were, you know, entertained a little bit by like, yeah, that's supposedly. 00;31;07;28 - 00;31;11;05 Speaker 1 I assumed it was a real thing actually. I just. 00;31;11;07 - 00;31;13;09 Speaker 2 I mean. Nixon was fucking nuts, right? 00;31;13;11 - 00;31;19;22 Speaker 1 Yeah. Yeah. I was like, no, sounds right. If you told me that that was a president who knew about it and. Yep. Okay. 00;31;19;24 - 00;31;37;13 Speaker 2 Yeah. You know, he probably should. Elvis too, right? That would be the other guy he would have shown it to. But yeah, he was, you know, he wanted to he wanted people to like him again. Sort of a mirror of a thing. So, you know, he would just he supposedly showed him that. See, there's a lot of fun. 00;31;37;14 - 00;31;57;15 Speaker 2 There's a lot of fun, like real alien stuff in there. I know my friend Aaron Seeger's, who is very much, you know, in the mainly spooky universe he had he had a lot of fun with this movie, you know, for his own, for his own reasons. He had a lot of fun with the movie. 00;31;57;21 - 00;32;20;25 Speaker 1 Yeah. I mean, it's it is it is an up and down kind of movie for me because there's moments that we already mentioned that I love so much, like the back end of the movie I thought was just wonderful, had so many great moments. It did get a little shaky at times for me, and I don't know if it was just a little too much exposition. 00;32;20;27 - 00;32;47;01 Speaker 1 There are times I wish I needed to pull an exact example where they're telling us what's going on while we're watching it go on sort of thing. I'm trying. There's a I'm trying to remember the scene where maybe it's on there, like holding the device and they like to like, I felt like the movie like to, like, reiterate to you what was happening while it was happening. 00;32;47;01 - 00;33;03;12 Speaker 2 I agree with you. I agree with you. But it also withholds something that is so strange to me. What happens when that guy disappears and then comes back. 00;33;03;14 - 00;33;07;24 Speaker 1 Where he, like, turns into particles and then. Yeah, yeah. 00;33;07;26 - 00;33;37;19 Speaker 2 That seems like something edited by accident. And no one caught it because I thought he was going to come back and be like, I have seen them or some shit and like, lost his mind. Like whatever he saw was too much. It's kind of like, in The Dark Tower. Whoever gets this reference, God bless you. In The Dark Tower, when the Men in Black shows Roland the real universe. 00;33;37;24 - 00;33;58;02 Speaker 2 And there they are. I mean, according to the Man in Black, they are just like a pedal on a rose on a planet. Right? That's, you know, that's how small they are compared to the rest of the galaxy. And when Roland comes out of that vision, the Man in Black says, oh, you have some strength in you or something like that. 00;33;58;02 - 00;34;13;28 Speaker 2 I thought I would have shown your father that he would have come back drooling. I wanted that guy to come back drooling, and that would have been the great fear because they're like, don't squeeze it. You squeeze it, you're gonna fucking don't squeeze it. They take a lot of pains. 00;34;14;05 - 00;34;14;12 Speaker 1 To. 00;34;14;12 - 00;34;15;01 Speaker 2 Say, go out. 00;34;15;05 - 00;34;18;29 Speaker 1 Yeah, don't hold it to I wear a glove like. 00;34;19;02 - 00;34;33;01 Speaker 2 We never really learned why I mean concert over uses it, which is fine. I like that idea. Like, you know, it's not. It's not a fucking toy. It's beyond us. We don't even know. Mostly, what's called a mingo tells them. 00;34;33;01 - 00;34;55;01 Speaker 1 All that. Yeah, Hugo's like, you're not using it for its correct purpose or. Yeah, and Emily Blunt seemingly can control it. Can handle it because, I mean, she after she makes them all go invisible, have the invisibility power for however long when she puts it down, it is like crumbled. It is kind of disintegrated. 00;34;55;02 - 00;34;57;15 Speaker 2 Yeah. She has she like, uses it up. 00;34;57;17 - 00;35;04;29 Speaker 1 Yeah. I mean yeah. That devices we don't really know a ton about the device except for if you do crazy things because it's. 00;35;04;29 - 00;35;27;15 Speaker 2 Like it's just like I'm okay with that too, because like you just said, maybe we don't need all that, right? We don't need to know exactly what this thing is. That's fine. But when you lay out rules, that means they figured out why that's a rule. And we should be shown that. As you said, don't tell us. Show me. 00;35;27;17 - 00;36;01;28 Speaker 2 Which. When the guy disappeared, I was like, here's the show. But I still was like, I don't get it. He just came right back and he was fine. So that's what I'm talking about. Where like these, these odd little decisions in here also. And this is, this is nitpicky, but I think for a man who, you know, who was so, you know, impacted by like, you know, what 911 did to people and such, mate, you cannot bring a fucking backpack, a full backpack into like a wrestling show. 00;36;02;05 - 00;36;18;21 Speaker 2 You can't even bring that into, like, most buildings, you know. So it's a it's a stupid thing to like, harp on, but it just could have been done differently because you want to know where he probably could have brought that into a movie theater. Well, you. 00;36;18;23 - 00;36;21;06 Speaker 1 Do they J check those though now. Right. 00;36;21;07 - 00;36;23;11 Speaker 2 Depending on what I go. 00;36;23;11 - 00;36;26;20 Speaker 1 To frisk for my little like no bag there. 00;36;26;20 - 00;36;29;26 Speaker 2 Like the sea otter I go to just about whatever. 00;36;29;29 - 00;36;32;18 Speaker 1 It depends on it does depend on the theater. 00;36;32;20 - 00;36;56;10 Speaker 2 Depends on the theater. But he he does not look like a man at ease. And so not only did he buy a ticket for this thing and walk in, but he sat down with other people and no one else around him thinks that it's weird. I think that's a bit of a misread for the real world, that maybe someone like a Spielberg just is unaware of. 00;36;56;12 - 00;36;57;24 Speaker 2 He doesn't go because. 00;36;57;26 - 00;36;57;29 Speaker 1 If. 00;36;58;03 - 00;36;58;06 Speaker 2 He. 00;36;58;06 - 00;36;58;29 Speaker 1 Doesn't. 00;36;59;01 - 00;36;59;18 Speaker 2 Like, he doesn't. 00;36;59;25 - 00;37;01;26 Speaker 1 Not even. Yeah, yeah. 00;37;01;29 - 00;37;27;28 Speaker 2 Steven Spielberg. Yeah. And that's that sort of thing. When I see that, I always go back to the stuff with like Lucas, where if you work, if you worked at Lucasfilm, ever, no matter what George Lucas says, you're like, that's a fucking great idea, George. You wanna know why? Because you're just thrilled to be there, you know, like, you've probably worked all your life. 00;37;27;29 - 00;37;47;03 Speaker 2 All, you know, since you were a kid, you had dreams of working at this place or working with this creative person and blah, blah, blah. You're not going to go in there and be like, well, actually. And I actually think that if someone would say something to speak in these situations, he'd be like, oh, okay. Yeah, you're right. 00;37;47;08 - 00;37;57;16 Speaker 2 I'll fix it. But I don't think anyone does. Or in this particular instance, no one did because it just seems an odd way to start your film, you know? 00;37;57;17 - 00;37;58;11 Speaker 1 Yeah. 00;37;58;14 - 00;37;59;21 Speaker 2 It's a clothesline. 00;37;59;26 - 00;38;00;08 Speaker 1 Yeah. 00;38;00;10 - 00;38;01;19 Speaker 2 It's a clothesline. 00;38;01;20 - 00;38;05;02 Speaker 1 I mean, you're a fan of of wrestling, so. 00;38;05;03 - 00;38;09;20 Speaker 2 It's not a wrestling crowd. As someone who's been to wrestling events. 00;38;09;21 - 00;38;10;15 Speaker 1 Not it was. 00;38;10;15 - 00;38;21;25 Speaker 2 Not fucking happening. Standing up the whole time like ten times in WrestleMania history has people stood up for an entire match. It ain't happening. 00;38;21;26 - 00;38;37;01 Speaker 1 It was such an interesting starting point. I wonder if it was just supposed to be, like, almost like a war, Dex. Like he's watching somebody try to beat the shit out of somebody else, but like, it's them. Like suppressing it, trying to hold it back, trying to push it down. I think it's. 00;38;37;01 - 00;38;44;18 Speaker 2 Like it's over. I think it was just. What's a popular thing that people could, you know, try to hide in. But it's a weird. It's weird. 00;38;44;25 - 00;39;25;29 Speaker 1 Yeah, I, I actually do think that, like, I would have preferred we started with Margaret Story. I just, I know that's like typical that you usually the like inciting incident sort of thing. You start with the story like that way with, you know, Daniel has the device and thereafter him and I think it does like set up the like okay, evil villain, the villains, you know, you usually do like the dark thing that the villains are trying to do to start a story, but something I just felt that Margaret's story, she really is the center of this whole thing, even though Daniel has. 00;39;25;29 - 00;39;27;01 Speaker 2 The most of them are. 00;39;27;05 - 00;39;50;07 Speaker 1 Yeah. Daniel has that power of, you know, mathematically being able to understand the language. But something about Margaret just she seems so cornerstone to the story, that I think that I would have started with Margaret and then gone to him. But I know that there was so much they were trying to get in to lay the foundation of the film. 00;39;50;14 - 00;40;14;17 Speaker 2 But I think also the thing is markets the end of the film, very much the third act is all that. So she's the first act and the third act. The other guys just carrying a backpack, right? You know, like so. But I do think there's a different, you know, look, the fugitive did it best man. Make it the fourth, make it Saint Patrick's Day. 00;40;14;18 - 00;40;20;21 Speaker 2 And people get lost in the fucking parade. Like that's the easiest thing to do. And it works. It's solid. 00;40;20;27 - 00;40;22;00 Speaker 1 Yeah. 00;40;22;03 - 00;40;34;21 Speaker 2 But actually. But like, that's. You couldn't even do that now. And I thought about this today so I had, I didn't I don't know if I told you Ryan this, I bought a ticket to fly down to New York. 00;40;34;24 - 00;40;36;16 Speaker 1 I didn't know you actually pulled the trigger. 00;40;36;16 - 00;40;53;12 Speaker 2 I actually did. I had somewhere to sleep, and I was like, you know what? I'm going to go down. I'm going to go down Wednesday, and then I'll go to the parade. And then after the parade, I got to go to the I got to go to the airport saying going to work on Friday. I decided against this for a couple of reasons. 00;40;53;12 - 00;41;01;20 Speaker 2 And one of them was I had to go from the parade to the airport. I wouldn't have been able to go back to Queens and then go back and forth. 00;41;01;20 - 00;41;03;15 Speaker 1 Back. This is a Knicks parade for anybody. 00;41;03;16 - 00;41;25;00 Speaker 2 This is a mixed breed. Yeah. And you could not have a backpack at all. So you prayed. Yeah. And I was like, oh, I wouldn't have been able to I, I wouldn't have been able to pull off the time that I needed to. So even then, like I thought of the movie, I was like, oh, no, you couldn't do the same Patrick's Day because it's going to probably be the same thing. 00;41;25;01 - 00;41;25;15 Speaker 2 Like they'll. 00;41;25;16 - 00;41;26;04 Speaker 1 Be strict. 00;41;26;04 - 00;41;27;06 Speaker 2 Now, you know? 00;41;27;08 - 00;41;29;08 Speaker 1 Rightly so. But yeah. 00;41;29;10 - 00;41;53;22 Speaker 2 Yeah, always just like for good reason, right? Yeah. Yeah. There's, there's these little things that I just wish were tweaked with a slightly different approach. The opening of him being at the wrestling event. I want to know why that guy disappeared. I really wish the alien at the end was practical, and I just wanted a little more of. 00;41;53;25 - 00;42;10;19 Speaker 2 Yeah, I'm split on that. Actually, I remember that was my first thing was I wanted more about that, that discussion that they had. But really, what is that discussion? What is that discussion? What do they they just further like throw, you know, philosophical platitudes at each other, you know. 00;42;10;21 - 00;42;12;26 Speaker 1 Oh yeah. Between Daniel and Jane at the house. 00;42;12;26 - 00;42;13;15 Speaker 2 And yeah. 00;42;13;16 - 00;42;14;09 Speaker 1 Like. 00;42;14;12 - 00;42;15;06 Speaker 2 What do you. 00;42;15;06 - 00;42;41;18 Speaker 1 Do not. Yeah. I don't know how you even come to an agreement on that sort of thing. And maybe that's why Jane has to do the complete turnaround. But yeah, I love so many elements of this. I do think that even the action sequences, like, I don't know if we needed them necessarily. Yeah. 00;42;41;22 - 00;42;42;14 Speaker 2 I mean. 00;42;42;17 - 00;42;48;21 Speaker 1 It was a it was like a chase thriller type of film where they are chasing. 00;42;48;21 - 00;42;49;19 Speaker 2 The train sequence. 00;42;49;19 - 00;42;55;12 Speaker 1 Was great. I was going to say that I don't know how they did the train. I loved it, but that looked really good. 00;42;55;13 - 00;42;59;19 Speaker 2 I mean, I'm assuming it CG that to put a roof. 00;42;59;19 - 00;43;01;17 Speaker 1 Of practical in there. 00;43;01;24 - 00;43;03;18 Speaker 2 It doesn't feel like it. 00;43;03;20 - 00;43;05;19 Speaker 1 Well then. 00;43;05;26 - 00;43;16;25 Speaker 2 Like I really liked when he was pushing them onto the track. Yeah. You know, I thought that was great. I don't know how trains stop nowadays, so I have no idea if that other train should have stopped. 00;43;16;26 - 00;43;17;02 Speaker 1 Been. 00;43;17;02 - 00;43;18;10 Speaker 2 Able to win. 00;43;18;13 - 00;43;22;16 Speaker 1 I still think they need so much time. He could have maybe slowed down. 00;43;22;19 - 00;43;39;23 Speaker 2 But yeah, like the first train should again. Like that's bringing so much real world stuff that like you, you know, you're not going to be able to enjoy anything if you start thinking about stuff like that, especially the action movies. I know that John Williams is, what, 98 now or 90? 00;43;39;25 - 00;43;42;16 Speaker 1 90, I don't know. Yeah. 00;43;42;18 - 00;44;10;14 Speaker 2 He's in his 90s, so I understand that the soundtrack was maybe not as much not. And I just mean in like material as, as it normally would have been because those chase sequences were without soundtrack, which when you think of Williams and you think of Spielberg films, those action sequences have something going on usually, and they were silent. 00;44;10;14 - 00;44;17;19 Speaker 2 And actually, I kind of wonder if that was just he can only get so much done at his age and this and that. I was kind. 00;44;17;19 - 00;44;18;24 Speaker 1 Of yeah, he's 90. 00;44;18;24 - 00;44;24;01 Speaker 2 Four, 94. Yeah. I mean, he had retired. This was his you know. 00;44;24;03 - 00;44;26;20 Speaker 1 This is this is now supposed to be his last one. 00;44;26;21 - 00;44;27;06 Speaker 2 Yeah. 00;44;27;08 - 00;44;31;21 Speaker 1 But I think if Spielberg asks him to do it again, I think he would if he. 00;44;31;21 - 00;44;32;28 Speaker 2 Was still going to. 00;44;32;29 - 00;44;33;19 Speaker 1 You know. 00;44;33;21 - 00;44;35;13 Speaker 2 I mean, if I don't know if he can turn. 00;44;35;13 - 00;44;37;16 Speaker 1 Him down. 00;44;37;18 - 00;44;44;15 Speaker 2 No, I don't I don't think I think Spielberg knows till, you know, he was. Yeah. Leave him be. Because if he asked, he would do it. 00;44;44;17 - 00;44;45;19 Speaker 1 Yeah. 00;44;45;22 - 00;44;49;13 Speaker 2 I think, you know, should should get a Spielberg film. 00;44;49;16 - 00;44;52;00 Speaker 1 Yeah, I think they'd be a great fit. 00;44;52;02 - 00;45;14;29 Speaker 2 That that, to me, feels real good. I don't know what he's what speed is doing next. I'm sure it's already out there, but I'd love to see that because Giacchino has a lot of the Williams gene, you know, like in his music. I feel he's found those hooks that work really well. So well, we'll see what goes on next. 00;45;14;29 - 00;45;39;07 Speaker 2 But yeah, overall, like I would say, it's like a be like a low be like an 8081, you know of a hundred. Because I just enjoy I enjoy the subject so much and the, you know, exploring that subject and what people would do is fascinating to me because I am a cynic at heart. I don't I don't think people would react well at all. 00;45;39;08 - 00;45;43;08 Speaker 2 I don't think anyone would believe anything they saw on that TV. Firstly. 00;45;43;10 - 00;45;47;20 Speaker 1 I think that would be a hard yeah, they would think it was I. 00;45;47;22 - 00;45;48;10 Speaker 2 Yeah. 00;45;48;14 - 00;45;49;28 Speaker 1 That would be a hard sell. 00;45;50;00 - 00;45;50;04 Speaker 2 One. 00;45;50;04 - 00;45;51;12 Speaker 1 Hundred. 00;45;51;15 - 00;45;55;10 Speaker 2 Until the motherfuckers landed. You have people who would not. 00;45;55;14 - 00;45;58;29 Speaker 1 Until they were, until they were placed in classrooms and workplaces. 00;45;59;00 - 00;46;15;03 Speaker 2 Yeah. And even then they'd be like, oh no, it's some sort of hologram. It's like Tupac. Tupac is going to be in a video game, folks. I don't know. I don't know what to tell you. All right. He's he's very strange. So that the games summer games fest last weekend Tupac's in the video game. 00;46;15;05 - 00;46;16;27 Speaker 1 Which the game. 00;46;16;29 - 00;46;22;12 Speaker 2 I think it's in the Yakuza game. Fucking world is weird. It's just a really weird world, I guess. 00;46;22;15 - 00;46;24;28 Speaker 1 Just sold away his rights. 00;46;25;00 - 00;46;40;03 Speaker 2 Well, I mean, Snoop Dogg was on stage, so he's also in the game again. Everything's very, very strange. Yeah, I, you know, I enjoy so much of it, but there's little, little bits that I wish were different. 00;46;40;03 - 00;46;45;17 Speaker 1 And I think this is going to get better on a second watch, like I think. 00;46;45;19 - 00;46;46;04 Speaker 2 Absolutely. 00;46;46;05 - 00;47;03;24 Speaker 1 Because I think I've been thinking about it since I saw it a few nights ago and like, oh, and I love that part and I love this. And then so like the parts that I think maybe I was critical of a second time around, I might be more lenient or I might understand it more. I might understand the choices more. 00;47;04;00 - 00;47;04;22 Speaker 2 You know. Yeah, this. 00;47;04;24 - 00;47;07;01 Speaker 1 Is with the device and, you know. 00;47;07;03 - 00;47;09;21 Speaker 2 Device in particular right now. 00;47;09;23 - 00;47;29;28 Speaker 1 Again, like, if you tell a good story, I mean, if you guys listen to the past episodes of like when I was like, I need to know which mechanics, I need to know this and that. And like, I really don't. Because if you hand me a good story and you hand me good characters and I care about the story and the characters involved, fuck, fuck me. 00;47;30;00 - 00;47;41;02 Speaker 1 Any magical thing, any supernatural thing could happen. Fuck if I care. I don't care how it happens. You know, it really is. The difference for me is whether you've got me invested in the story or not. 00;47;41;03 - 00;47;45;07 Speaker 2 Yeah, no, my my only reason that I harped on that is because. 00;47;45;09 - 00;47;45;20 Speaker 1 You're right. 00;47;45;21 - 00;47;58;05 Speaker 2 It's they they gave a rule and I want to know why. Like outside of that, outside of that we're. Oh yeah. By the way yes, I am a fan. I mean, come on, what are we doing? I mean, what do you want from me? 00;47;58;08 - 00;48;00;11 Speaker 1 Yeah, we're a little biased. 00;48;00;13 - 00;48;05;05 Speaker 2 Well, no, I mean, like, I'm biased, but I'm also. I'm fine with saying, like, this doesn't work. You know? It just doesn't work. 00;48;05;11 - 00;48;09;13 Speaker 1 It's not top speed for me. But I loved it. So loved it. 00;48;09;14 - 00;48;43;21 Speaker 2 No, it's not still skill by any means. I would say again, I think it's like a solid B, but I'll take a solid be over, you know, lower than that, you know, I'm happy to watch it again. And I do agree with you. I do think that on Second View, I'm curious and interested to see what else I pick up that I may have not picked up on in the first viewing, which happens in so many movies because, you know, taking everything in, it's a very, very odd that I watch a film once and I'm like, got it? 00;48;43;26 - 00;49;01;28 Speaker 2 Like even a bad film, like a movie that I don't enjoy. I'll rewatch it and I'll be like, oh, okay, well, there's there's that going on. This is kind of okay. I'll notice something even more mind numbing than I missed the first time. You know, whatever it may be. I mean, should I watch troll two just last night? 00;49;01;29 - 00;49;03;28 Speaker 2 Incredible 4K. 00;49;04;04 - 00;49;06;05 Speaker 1 Wait wait wait, why why did you like. 00;49;06;11 - 00;49;11;13 Speaker 2 Troll two? No no no no. Guess me if I own troll two on 4K. 00;49;11;15 - 00;49;14;05 Speaker 1 Well, that's a yes because you own everything on 4K. 00;49;14;07 - 00;49;33;18 Speaker 2 I got the the 4K troll two and man, it's so wild to see these old 80s films. You know what the film, what the film actually cleaned up and looking the way that it is because 35 millimeter what like equals out to roughly like I think 6 or 8 K like technically. 00;49;33;21 - 00;49;36;21 Speaker 1 You're not talking about like the new animation trolls. 00;49;36;24 - 00;49;38;07 Speaker 2 No no. 00;49;38;10 - 00;49;38;27 Speaker 1 No. 00;49;39;00 - 00;49;43;00 Speaker 2 No no no no. Trying to. 00;49;43;02 - 00;49;46;13 Speaker 1 Okay okay. Yes yes yes. The 80s films. Okay. 00;49;46;17 - 00;49;47;22 Speaker 2 You know that that. 00;49;47;25 - 00;49;48;17 Speaker 1 That trolls. 00;49;48;22 - 00;49;51;25 Speaker 2 They're eating him and then they're going to eat me. 00;49;52;02 - 00;49;52;21 Speaker 1 Yes. 00;49;52;24 - 00;49;54;27 Speaker 3 Oh my God. 00;49;55;00 - 00;49;59;01 Speaker 1 Initially me I thought you were that you were by the animated. No. 00;49;59;03 - 00;50;28;19 Speaker 2 It's a horrible movie, but it's fun as shit to watch. You know, it is really fun to watch. We got to receive that movie for this. We got you got to see troll two, which, by the way, for anyone who is unaware, there is no troll. What? There was a movie called troll that the direct that the producers of the film decided to call this troll two, because the original troll made some money at the box office, and they thought they could trick people into thinking that it was a sequel. 00;50;28;22 - 00;50;41;18 Speaker 2 But there's there's not, it's not there's no troll one, and there are no fucking trolls in the movie. They're all goblins. So. Oh my god, love the movies. Love them. 00;50;41;20 - 00;50;47;07 Speaker 1 Yeah, I could go on about this movie because I, I did think I think I love it, I think talking about it. 00;50;47;08 - 00;50;54;05 Speaker 2 Let's do a revisit. I want to wait till the comes out on home video. Home video. Like it's 1987. 00;50;54;08 - 00;50;57;01 Speaker 1 Here in the mindset. You're back. 00;50;57;01 - 00;51;28;15 Speaker 2 In the 80s. I got troll two on for Kanika Explorers in 4K. There's some some good times ahead. I want to revisit this and do a second review once I get to sit down and watch it in the house. Because there's another thing that I don't think I had any trouble on this particular film, but I am seeing a pattern that I have some issues picking up dialog with loud noises more and more as I go to the movies, and I got to give them a run at home with subtitles. 00;51;28;17 - 00;51;32;15 Speaker 1 So let's get your hearing checked. 00;51;32;17 - 00;51;54;04 Speaker 2 He was a crazy part. What was that movie? I can't believe that this is actually how this happened. But I swear to. I swear to whatever God you believe in. This is a true story. The movie is Ahmed. Where he is? Hearings. He's a drummer. What's that called? Didn't he win? He did. We got to get the title. 00;51;54;07 - 00;51;55;21 Speaker 2 Fantastic movie. 00;51;55;26 - 00;51;56;24 Speaker 1 Sound of Metal. 00;51;56;26 - 00;52;22;23 Speaker 2 I shit you not. Throughout my life I have gone to. I couldn't tell you how many concerts. Over a hundred. I've even worked security for some of them. I have never once worn here of protection. This. This is not a suggestion by any means to anybody. I was watching Sound of Metal and as I'm watching it, I legitimately the earring. 00;52;22;23 - 00;52;45;02 Speaker 2 The hearing went out of one of my ears and I just had a loud ring. God. And I was horrified. And I went and I got an ear like your examination and everything. And it had calmed down a little bit by then, and I had a hearing test and they were like, no, you're doing fine. They're like, your hearings. 00;52;45;02 - 00;53;03;06 Speaker 2 Okay. You have a little bit of, you know, something, you know, some sort of thing. I don't remember exactly how they wanted it, but they were like, it's nothing to worry about it. You know? You'll feel fine. A couple of days it gave me some drops. But yeah, I had for like, like a good, like, half a week or something. 00;53;03;11 - 00;53;07;22 Speaker 2 I couldn't hear almost anything out of one of my ears just from that. 00;53;07;23 - 00;53;09;18 Speaker 1 Was it, was it like the. 00;53;09;20 - 00;53;12;27 Speaker 2 Yeah, it was ringing. Yeah. Because it was like tonight I thought I had tonight. 00;53;13;03 - 00;53;30;28 Speaker 1 I'll get like the tinnitus and then luckily, like I just don't. Oh I have a I don't freak out about it. It happens like pretty frequently for me. But I just I just don't freak out about it and like it will. It always corrects itself. So I try not to to focus on it. I don't know enough about tinnitus to know whether, like I need to be ever. 00;53;31;05 - 00;53;54;25 Speaker 2 I hear about in my ears 24 over seven all the time. So, you know, when we go out to our loud restaurant or something like that, I, I have a lot of trouble hearing my friends and stuff like that. So. But yeah. So I'll, you know, whenever I give a lot, you know, movie a couple of watches, I'll, I'll give one round with the, with the subtitles on. 00;53;54;27 - 00;54;16;05 Speaker 2 It's also just sometimes people just delivering fast dialog and I want to catch everything like I love Deadwood. I've watched that show. I don't know how many times over, but I'll watch it sometimes with the subtitles, just because the manner of speech that they are using and the vocabulary that they are using, sometimes it may just slip by me, right? 00;54;16;06 - 00;54;17;12 Speaker 2 So I just like to do that. 00;54;17;15 - 00;54;18;02 Speaker 1 It's so much. 00;54;18;02 - 00;54;19;02 Speaker 2 Harder and easier. 00;54;19;03 - 00;54;28;01 Speaker 1 It is harder at home though. I feel like they don't sound mix correctly for for everybody's sound systems because I. 00;54;28;01 - 00;54;30;03 Speaker 2 Just yeah, I. 00;54;30;05 - 00;54;44;29 Speaker 1 I heard sinners crystal clear in theaters. I don't remember ever having a problem understanding what Michael B Jordan was saying at all in sinners. But on my at home, I mean, we have the speaker, we have the sound system. 00;54;45;01 - 00;54;48;17 Speaker 2 I couldn't what kind of sound system do you have? 00;54;48;19 - 00;54;51;28 Speaker 1 I mean, it's not good enough, but I couldn't tell you. 00;54;51;29 - 00;54;52;25 Speaker 2 Like. 00;54;52;28 - 00;54;58;13 Speaker 1 It's a sound bar and like the subwoofers and like, it's it's like a full like. 00;54;58;14 - 00;55;00;17 Speaker 2 Is it just the sound bar, though? 00;55;00;20 - 00;55;01;26 Speaker 1 No, no, we have like. 00;55;01;26 - 00;55;03;11 Speaker 2 A restaurant. 00;55;03;14 - 00;55;11;21 Speaker 1 No, we have the two small speakers, the sound bar. We don't have the like the. Is it like subwoofer bass? 00;55;11;23 - 00;55;12;10 Speaker 2 Okay. 00;55;12;12 - 00;55;15;12 Speaker 1 That one. Okay. It is it is odd. 00;55;15;15 - 00;55;43;26 Speaker 2 You have a two point. You have a 2.1 setup. Essentially it's over 3.1 setup. You should look into some of the settings or actually hook your system up with a receiver and do a a calibration test. And it will balance that out. And there's actually there's some nice little features nowadays on some Blu ray players for vocal boosters that boosts up the the audio track a little bit more or tries to. 00;55;43;27 - 00;55;54;03 Speaker 1 Yeah, I mean I think we do have like the dialog setting or whatever that setting is turned up, but for some reason I don't know what it was about centers. That wasn't. 00;55;54;04 - 00;55;55;10 Speaker 2 I'll give it a rewatch. I don't. 00;55;55;10 - 00;56;00;04 Speaker 1 Remember, I watched it on, but I watched it on HBO Max, so it was. 00;56;00;06 - 00;56;01;19 Speaker 2 Probably going to be it. Yeah. 00;56;01;20 - 00;56;03;15 Speaker 1 But I was surprised because I don't. 00;56;03;16 - 00;56;03;21 Speaker 2 That's. 00;56;03;21 - 00;56;05;16 Speaker 1 Going to be having an issue. 00;56;05;17 - 00;56;07;01 Speaker 2 With compressed. 00;56;07;03 - 00;56;07;17 Speaker 1 Yeah, I. 00;56;07;17 - 00;56;08;23 Speaker 2 Think that compressed sound. 00;56;08;23 - 00;56;15;28 Speaker 1 So yeah. But but yeah. For some reason if you're streaming I feel like the sound. 00;56;15;29 - 00;56;19;12 Speaker 2 What's, what's the lesson here, Sam? 00;56;19;18 - 00;56;20;11 Speaker 1 Don't stream. 00;56;20;11 - 00;56;24;00 Speaker 2 Bye bye. Oh, shit. 00;56;24;02 - 00;56;31;20 Speaker 1 Then it's like, get rid of. Then it's like, get rid of the streaming services then, you know. 00;56;31;23 - 00;56;38;02 Speaker 1 You don't see the problem. 00;56;38;04 - 00;56;40;16 Speaker 4 For a hard time committing. 00;56;40;19 - 00;56;43;15 Speaker 2 Yeah, yeah, yeah. 00;56;43;17 - 00;56;48;01 Speaker 1 Oh, man. But yes, we should definitely. We should definitely do. 00;56;48;03 - 00;56;48;28 Speaker 2 Yeah. We'll do. 00;56;49;01 - 00;56;49;03 Speaker 1 It. 00;56;49;03 - 00;56;50;02 Speaker 2 When it comes around. 00;56;50;03 - 00;56;59;16 Speaker 1 And but I think we'll, we'll call it for, for this one. But I think our consensus is we, we both loved it. 00;56;59;16 - 00;57;00;26 Speaker 2 So I. 00;57;00;26 - 00;57;03;00 Speaker 1 Really, really enjoyed it. Yeah. 00;57;03;01 - 00;57;08;16 Speaker 2 Yeah I very much enjoyed it. We didn't even discuss the whole focus on the eyes, which is. 00;57;08;19 - 00;57;18;20 Speaker 1 To say he tells so much through. Yeah. Like when he really treats eyes as if there's like a window into the soul. Yeah. So you know, and he's. 00;57;18;20 - 00;57;25;00 Speaker 2 So I mean quite literally okay. Because you know, that's how they take over them is, you know, your eyes change. 00;57;25;06 - 00;57;33;25 Speaker 1 Yeah. That was great. That's great. And that scene or you know Jean's clutching the crucifix you know trying to. And it's like her that's. 00;57;33;26 - 00;58;04;14 Speaker 2 Oh I thought of disclosure also today because I was watching. Nope. Jordan Peele's Nope. I fucking love that movie. And the opening of that is just you're hearing the background of the TV show with Gordy, you know, with the chimp that that goes nuts. And then the first shot of the film is Gordy, and the shot is a POV of young Steven Yeun. 00;58;04;17 - 00;58;21;26 Speaker 2 Yun. I seen this last name right underneath the table, and Gordy just turns and looks straight at him and holds. And I was like, Disclosure Day, it's an alien. So I'm going to go watch. Nope. Fuck, I love that movie. 00;58;21;27 - 00;58;33;13 Speaker 1 Oh my God, you watch that movie. All right. Well, I think we've got like there's a lot of movies coming up over the summer, so I'm sure I think Supergirl is that next week that's coming out. 00;58;33;19 - 00;58;38;05 Speaker 2 Supergirl toy story five comes out this week. I saw two, which we could talk about eventually. 00;58;38;06 - 00;58;51;27 Speaker 1 Yeah, I did. Speaking of tinnitus and ear issues and and sounds. Yeah, that's that's tuner. But we can talk about tuner at another point in time. I did enjoy that. But yeah, I think it's still in theaters in some places. 00;58;51;27 - 00;59;09;24 Speaker 2 But tuner yeah it's it's out there. It's around there. Yeah. But yeah. What do I have right now lined up on the old, I mean, the only thing is I usually just go see movies the week that I'm going to see them, I don't I only pre buy tickets for ones that are going to be a pain in the ass. 00;59;09;26 - 00;59;19;28 Speaker 2 So actually I'm seeing the Furious on Saturday, which I'm very excited about. Then I do have Supergirl. I got Hadestown The Musical coming to theaters. 00;59;20;01 - 00;59;22;04 Speaker 1 I'm very excited about that. 00;59;22;07 - 00;59;23;04 Speaker 2 I am. 00;59;23;07 - 00;59;24;14 Speaker 1 Your. 00;59;24;16 - 00;59;30;24 Speaker 2 And then, you know, I did grab a ticket for Spider-Man. But I tell you, those movies have not really done much for me. 00;59;30;27 - 00;59;35;10 Speaker 1 I'm not a huge I'm not a huge fan of this iteration of Spider-Man, but. 00;59;35;11 - 00;59;49;16 Speaker 2 There's been like nice scenes in them. But I find myself kind of bored with them overall. Or just just, yeah, just kind of don't care, but who knows? Yeah, I always hope the next one blows my hair back, right? 00;59;49;17 - 00;59;54;20 Speaker 1 Right. Yeah. I mean, I keep going to see if maybe, maybe this line, maybe this time. 00;59;54;27 - 01;00;10;12 Speaker 2 That's not what they're thinking. They make $1 billion every Spider-Man movie. Yeah. So for them, they've hit it out of the park every time. There's never been a right. There's never been a marginally bad one, you know, because that's how it's that's, you know, it's. Yeah, that's just how it is. 01;00;10;14 - 01;00;26;19 Speaker 1 So. Oh, and the Odyssey is coming up. But that's all in July. But anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself getting it out myself. But plenty of plenty of films to talk about coming up. Maybe a few old ones. I still don't want to talk. I've been thinking about sentimental value a lot lately, so I don't know. We'll see. 01;00;26;20 - 01;00;35;11 Speaker 1 So thanks everyone for listening. Hope you enjoyed it.
