- 0:00What happens when you stop producing?
- 0:03Who are you when work slows down?
- 0:07When the title changes? When the ministry role ends?
- 0:13When the kids grow up? When nobody needs you for a
- 0:18while? Who are you when you're no
- 0:20longer doing? Because for a lot of people,
- 0:22that question is terrifying. Not because they don't know what
- 0:27they would do next, but because they don't know who they would
- 0:32be. Performance identity is tricky
- 0:35because it usually doesn't look unhealthy.
- 0:39It looks responsible, driven, faithful, successful,
- 0:44productive. It gets praised, rewarded, and
- 0:48promoted. Underneath all of that activity
- 0:52can be a dangerous belief. My value comes from what I
- 0:56produce, and the problem with that belief is that eventually
- 1:01performance becomes a prison. Today we're talking about
- 1:06performance identity, when achievement becomes worth.
- 1:10Welcome to unmask, where we take off the filters and get real
- 1:13about faith, failure and finding freedom.
- 1:17I'm your host, Wesley Farnsworth, and this is episode
- 1:202 of our miniseries Who Am I Really?
- 1:23Last episode we talked about trauma identity, what happens
- 1:27when pain becomes our name? Today we move into a different
- 1:32identity, one that looks healthy on the outside, and that is
- 1:37performance identity. Because while some people build
- 1:40identity around wounds, others built identity around
- 1:44achievement, success, ministry, leadership, being needed, being
- 1:51useful. And eventually they stop knowing
- 1:54who they are apart from what they do.
- 1:57So let's take a breath, let's sit back and let's dive in.
- 2:01This is unmasked performance. Identity rarely begins with
- 2:06pride. Usually it begins with purpose.
- 2:09You want to do well, You want to help, You want to serve, You
- 2:14want to provide, you want to matter, and those things are all
- 2:20good. The problem isn't achievement,
- 2:23the problem is attachment. See, when achievement stops
- 2:27being something that you do, when it starts becoming who you
- 2:30are, that is when things begin to shift.
- 2:34Because now your identity rises and falls with your output.
- 2:39You have a good day, you feel valuable, productive week.
- 2:43You feel worthy, you get recognition, and you feel seen.
- 2:47But what happens when productivity slows down?
- 2:51What happens when the affirmation disappears?
- 2:54What happens when you fail? If identity is attached to
- 2:57performance, then everything becomes fragile.
- 3:00See, most performance driven people are asking a question
- 3:05that they don't even realize they're asking.
- 3:08They're asking am I enough? And performance becomes an
- 3:11attempt to answer that. So they work harder, they serve
- 3:16more, they achieve more, they lead better, they do more
- 3:22because maybe eventually it will feel like enough.
- 3:27The problem is, performance never answers identity
- 3:31questions, It only postpones them.
- 3:34Because achievement creates temporary validation, not
- 3:38lasting identity. And that's exhausting because
- 3:44now you're not working from acceptance, you're working for
- 3:48the acceptance. One story that comes to mind
- 3:50here is Martha. Jesus comes into their home and
- 3:55Mary sits with him, and Martha serves.
- 3:59Now let's be honest, Martha isn't doing something simple
- 4:02here. She's helping.
- 4:04She's serving, she's working. She's doing what many of us
- 4:08would probably do, but eventually she becomes
- 4:12frustrated and overwhelmed, distracted, and Jesus says
- 4:17something very powerful to her. He says, Martha, Martha, are you
- 4:22worried and upset about many things?
- 4:24Not lying hits because Martha wasn't bad.
- 4:27She was burdened. She wasn't lazy.
- 4:30She was striving. She had become so focused on
- 4:33doing for Jesus that she stopped being with Jesus.
- 4:39And performance identity still does that.
- 4:43It turns a relationship into a responsibility.
- 4:46It turns presence into productivity and connection into
- 4:50output. See, performance identity slowly
- 4:53changes the order. Instead of B, it becomes do.
- 4:59Instead of do, it's become. I perform, therefore I matter.
- 5:06I achieve, therefore I belong, I succeed, therefore I have value.
- 5:12But the Kingdom works backwards. Before Jesus ever performed a
- 5:16miracle, before he preached, before his ministry even began,
- 5:21at his very first baptism, the Father says, this is my Son,
- 5:25whom I love, and with him I am well pleased.
- 5:29He was loved before ministry. He was accepted before output.
- 5:35His identity came before assignment, and that order
- 5:40matters because many people live backwards.
- 5:44They spend their whole lives trying to earn what God already
- 5:49gave. See performance.
- 5:50Identity becomes especially dangerous in faith spaces
- 5:54because serving God can quietly become performing for God.
- 5:59You start measuring yourself by usefulness, by impact, by
- 6:03responsibility, by how much people need you.
- 6:08And eventually rest feels irresponsible.
- 6:12Saying no feels selfish. Stepping back feels like
- 6:16failure. Because your identity got tired.
- 6:20Because your because your identity got tied to being
- 6:24needed. And being needed feels good
- 6:28until it becomes your source. Because if being needed is your
- 6:32identity, you will struggle when people no longer need you.
- 6:37Underneath performance identity, there's also usually fear.
- 6:41Fear of feeling insignificant, fear of disappointing, fear of
- 6:47disappointing people. Fear of failure.
- 6:52Fear of not mattering. Because performance often says
- 6:57if I stop producing, people may stop valuing me.
- 7:02And that's a heavy way to live, because now every success has
- 7:07pressure attached to it. Every failure becomes personal,
- 7:12and you're no longer evaluating what happened, you're evaluating
- 7:16yourself. Failure becomes identity, and
- 7:19rest becomes guilt. Slowing down becomes anxiety and
- 7:24eventually you forget who you are apart from what you
- 7:28accomplish. So what happens when the title
- 7:30changes? So your performance identity
- 7:32usually gets exposed during these transitions when titles
- 7:35change during seasons of job loss, retirement, leadership
- 7:40changes, the kids leaving home, ministry shifts and injuries,
- 7:46burnout. Suddenly, in these things, the
- 7:48role changes and people ask, who am I now?
- 7:52Because for years, identity lived inside of the assignment.
- 7:57For years they were the leader, the provider, the helper, the
- 8:01strong one, the successful one, the parent.
- 8:05And when the role changes, the identity shakes.
- 8:10Not because the role was wrong, but because it became too
- 8:14important. Performance identity is
- 8:16exhausting because there's no finish line.
- 8:21There is always another goal, another achievement, another
- 8:26expectation, another standard, and eventually people realize
- 8:32that they've built a life that they can't rest inside of.
- 8:35They know how to work, they know how to achieve, they know how to
- 8:40produce, but they don't know how to simply be.
- 8:46And that's why many high performing people secretly
- 8:49struggle with emptiness. Because success cannot answer
- 8:54identity questions, only truth can.
- 8:59In Ephesians it says that we are saved by grace, not works.
- 9:04That verse isn't just talking about salvation, it's talking
- 9:08about identity. You do not earn love.
- 9:12You do not earn belonging. You do not earn worth.
- 9:20You receive it. Performance says earn, but grace
- 9:24says receive. Performance says prove it, but
- 9:29Grace says you already belong. And that changes everything,
- 9:34because now work becomes overflow, not identity.
- 9:38Service becomes expression, not worth, and achievement becomes
- 9:43stewardship, not value. So how do we break out of this
- 9:47performance identity? Well, we slow down long enough
- 9:51to ask hard questions. Who am I without the title?
- 9:57Who am I without the role? Who am I when nobody is
- 10:01applauding? Who am I when productivity
- 10:05stops? Because maybe you're on, not on
- 10:08the output. Because maybe you are not your
- 10:11output. Maybe you are not your success.
- 10:15Maybe you are not your role. Maybe who you are runs deeper
- 10:19than what you do. So let me ask you something.
- 10:22What role have you attached your identity to?
- 10:26What happens emotionally when you fail?
- 10:30When you rest, when you slow down, when you feel peace or
- 10:35panic? Because that answer may reveal
- 10:38more than you realize. Next time on Unmasked, we're
- 10:46going to talk about recovery identity.
- 10:49Because some people build an identity around pain, others
- 10:53build it around performance, and some build it around healing
- 10:58itself. The survivor, the recovering
- 11:01person, the one rebuilding, and eventually recovery becomes a
- 11:06whole story. Until next time, remember this.
- 11:10You are more than what you achieve.
- 11:14You are more than what you build.
- 11:18You are more than what you produce.
- 11:20And identity was never meant to be earned.
- 11:25It was always meant to be received.
- 11:27And remember that true freedom begins when you choose to live
- 11:33unmasked. God bless you.
