- 0:01Speaker 1: Finally enough, come it doesn't work quite as well when
- 0:08Speaker 1: we're not in a room together.
- 0:10Speaker 2: No, not quite. But who would have guessed that the
- 0:14Speaker 2: girl we described was just exactly what the doctor prescribed.
- 0:18Speaker 1: That's how she became the Tramity.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Roses soon to have a karaoke birthday party. Sorry to
- 0:26Speaker 2: blow up your spot. And I bring this up because
- 0:29Speaker 2: we were discussing some potential karaoke songs that you or
- 0:33Speaker 2: I or others might do, and I did say. I
- 0:36Speaker 2: was like, you know, it would be kind of a
- 0:37Speaker 2: serve to do. Then any theme song, just ice and quick,
- 0:40Speaker 2: everyone would sing along.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I have many thoughts about what songs I will be
- 0:45Speaker 1: performing Virgins. We would love for you to get in
- 0:48Speaker 1: the comments on Spotify, on Patreon, wherever and tell us
- 0:52Speaker 1: what your go to karaoke song is, and maybe make
- 0:56Speaker 1: some suggestions for what we could perform at my birthday part.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I would love to Maybe maybe we'll get maybe you'll
- 1:04Speaker 1: end up getting some exclusive video content out of it.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Who knows.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Baby. Speaking of comments, let me tell you the comments
- 1:12Speaker 2: are popping off for what is the latest and greatest
- 1:17Speaker 2: bonus episode of Like a Virgin.
- 1:21Speaker 1: We Jo you've ever recorded.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I'm not joking. I know we are girly honest to speak,
- 1:28Speaker 2: and hyperbole. We are often like this.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I've never spoken in hyperbole in my life.
- 1:32Speaker 2: In my life, but when I tell you that, despite
- 1:37Speaker 2: the fact that Rose and I have often done highly
- 1:40Speaker 2: researched episodes thorough but bullet points like documents like research prep,
- 1:47Speaker 2: et cetera, we have never actually popped off the way
- 1:52Speaker 2: we popped off with our Patreon exclusive bonus episode Best
- 1:58Speaker 2: Disney Dresses aka most Beautiful Disney Dresses plus highly competitive
- 2:03Speaker 2: superlative categories. Rose, can you describe what this episode is?
- 2:08Speaker 2: So if you're listening to this you might be a
- 2:10Speaker 2: main RSS feed girly on it. That means you're getting
- 2:12Speaker 2: this episode for free. You're welcome. We also have bonus
- 2:16Speaker 2: episodes twice a month. We'll talk more about that later.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And we released a major, major hour and forty minute
- 2:23Speaker 2: deep dive, which we usually don't go that long, but
- 2:25Speaker 2: we were so possessed by the material.
- 2:27Speaker 1: How literally, by the material of the dresses.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Yes, Rose, can you talk more about the episode? Maybe
- 2:36Speaker 2: like we already we've already talked about in the episode itself,
- 2:40Speaker 2: like why we did it, but like, can you talk
- 2:43Speaker 2: about the format, the criteria, maybe the selection process.
- 2:47Speaker 1: The selection process was fran and I and all of
- 2:53Speaker 1: our friends who we were on Fire Island with sitting
- 2:56Speaker 1: around the pool, just kind of naming Great Disney Princess
- 3:01Speaker 1: looks for several hours and.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Then and non Princess looks.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And non Princess looks uh, and then sorting them into
- 3:09Speaker 1: various categories. Originally we were just going to rank the
- 3:12Speaker 1: most beautiful dresses, and then we started realizing that within
- 3:16Speaker 1: that main category, there were all these sub categories that
- 3:20Speaker 1: we also really wanted to hit, just because there were
- 3:23Speaker 1: so many contenders. So in the episode you have us
- 3:28Speaker 1: going through all these superlatives. We won't give them away
- 3:30Speaker 1: because they're really good and you should. You should laugh
- 3:33Speaker 1: when you hear them for the first time, and we did. Yeah, well,
- 3:39Speaker 1: no one, no one. We make no one laugh harder
- 3:43Speaker 1: than ourselves. I probably didn't say that sentence, right, I
- 3:48Speaker 1: don't know. My brain is still coming online post vacation, but.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Literally, we are coming to you Fried.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Okay, we got back this morning. Yeah, we got back.
- 3:57Speaker 1: We got back from Ira from Iyr Island. We got
- 4:00Speaker 1: that Fire Island less than three hours ago. Yes, so yeah,
- 4:05Speaker 1: so we have all these subcategories. Within those, we talk
- 4:08Speaker 1: through kind of you know, the divas competing in them,
- 4:12Speaker 1: pick a winner. There's lots of lively debate about this,
- 4:16Speaker 1: but then the actual list ranking of most beautiful Disney
- 4:20Speaker 1: dresses is a ranking that friend and I agreed upon
- 4:24Speaker 1: in advance and buy an advance I mean, approximately fifteen
- 4:27Speaker 1: minutes before we started recording, Yes, sipping sipping cocktails by
- 4:33Speaker 1: the pool.
- 4:34Speaker 2: But that didn't make it any less throw hotly debated.
- 4:38Speaker 2: It was getting fashion criticism.
- 4:40Speaker 1: No, Okay, something I've been realizing recently, Like we've had
- 4:45Speaker 1: I think, in my opinion, some really stunning and very
- 4:48Speaker 1: smart conversations about fashion. I agree, like it's obviously something
- 4:55Speaker 1: we both really care about, and.
- 4:59Speaker 2: You know, necessarily in the fashion world. We're not in
- 5:02Speaker 2: the fashion world, but is fashion adjacent.
- 5:05Speaker 1: But we're both very well dressed. We both have I think,
- 5:10Speaker 1: specific areas of interest in fashion that we are very
- 5:15Speaker 1: knowledgeable about, and like, I don't know, I just really
- 5:18Speaker 1: like that we're able to talk not just about not
- 5:21Speaker 1: just saying like I like this or I don't like this,
- 5:23Speaker 1: but we actually went into the what these garments themselves like?
- 5:29Speaker 1: Really from a fashion perspective, you know, comparing them to
- 5:32Speaker 1: designers or like trying to see where the influencers were
- 5:35Speaker 1: coming from or figuring out, you know, what the correlation
- 5:39Speaker 1: is between these looks and you know, kind of current
- 5:43Speaker 1: designers and things we're seeing on the runway and considering that,
- 5:48Speaker 1: you know, it was just Paris Fashion Week again, since
- 5:51Speaker 1: it's literally always fashion week somewhere, and Club Schalamey got
- 5:56Speaker 1: beat up waiting for Connor's story before the YSL show us. Fran,
- 6:01Speaker 1: you don't know about this? Wait, wait, wait, tell for
- 6:04Speaker 1: the virgins, tell us Okay, okay, Fran, don't research it.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I want I don't research as we're talking. I love,
- 6:10Speaker 1: I really want to bring this information to you.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Okay.
- 6:13Speaker 1: So during and this is this is kind of stalety
- 6:17Speaker 1: at this point, but not to you, and not to
- 6:20Speaker 1: I'm sure a lot of the virgins. So during Paris
- 6:23Speaker 1: Fashion Week, Club schalome who I don't know if you
- 6:27Speaker 1: know this or if our listeners know this, has jump
- 6:29Speaker 1: ship from Timmy do that and has pivoted to being
- 6:33Speaker 1: a Connor story stand account. She was allegedly already coincidentally
- 6:39Speaker 1: on vacation. She made this long post detailing the story
- 6:45Speaker 1: she was on vacation in France, was like, oh, well
- 6:50Speaker 1: I'm here, let me go wait outside Connor Story's hotel
- 6:53Speaker 1: for multiple hours so I can see him for maybe
- 6:58Speaker 1: three minutes. She got a.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Blurry photo on her vacation.
- 7:02Speaker 1: She was there outfitted truly looking like the unibomber. She
- 7:07Speaker 1: was in, like head to toe protective sunwere mask on,
- 7:12Speaker 1: had on everything. But her tea still got clocked because
- 7:16Speaker 1: they're like, oh, is that old bitch waiting outside Connor
- 7:21Speaker 1: Story's hotel like a lunatic Club schalome like if you
- 7:25Speaker 1: have to ask yourself that, the answer is yes. So,
- 7:30Speaker 1: through a bunch of weird circumstances, some person in the
- 7:34Speaker 1: crowd started beefing publicly in person with Club Shallomey and
- 7:40Speaker 1: like calling her a weird bitch because she is. Yeah, well,
- 7:46Speaker 1: Club Schallomey took what she referred to as her Manson
- 7:49Speaker 1: family recruitment photo of this person who is non binary.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Club Shallo Mat did misgender them in her screed about this,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and I guess, uh, Club Shallamy called her cunt and
- 8:03Speaker 1: they were like shoving each other, and this has you know,
- 8:07Speaker 1: spiraled into this huge meme kind of and like the
- 8:11Speaker 1: thing is they were both standing outside Connor stories as hell.
- 8:16Speaker 1: It's like, oh, so you weren't the craziest or you
- 8:20Speaker 1: weren't the only crazy person person at the crazy person convention. Shocking.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I also am like, I'm like, yeah, they're both so
- 8:31Speaker 2: like not well. And I say that not in like
- 8:36Speaker 2: a like a you know, being mean to like people
- 8:40Speaker 2: who are nerved diversion. I'm seeing I'm trying to be
- 8:42Speaker 2: mean to fandom culture.
- 8:44Speaker 1: To stalkers. It is stockings. It is really the concept
- 8:49Speaker 1: of you know, you and I have been in many
- 8:51Speaker 1: spaces where that are you know, the famous people are
- 8:55Speaker 1: in them, or like a celebrity adjacent to.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Say, at the Mother Mary premiere, there were and at
- 9:00Speaker 2: the way stands chasing us down the block to the
- 9:02Speaker 2: after party because they thought they were like is and
- 9:05Speaker 2: there is and.
- 9:05Speaker 1: There yeah and and don't get me wrong, like I love,
- 9:11Speaker 1: you know a county little celebrity sighting from time to time.
- 9:17Speaker 1: It can be fun, it's exciting. I think you and
- 9:20Speaker 1: I are probably both a little bit more desensitized because
- 9:23Speaker 1: like we are literally friends with some famous people and
- 9:28Speaker 1: also have spent our careers interviewing and like being in
- 9:32Speaker 1: spaces with those people, So yes, I understand, Like I
- 9:39Speaker 1: there are people who really want that experience of being
- 9:43Speaker 1: around the people that they really love and are obsessed with,
- 9:46Speaker 1: but just to like stand outside for hours so you
- 9:50Speaker 1: can watch them walk from a hotel lobby to a
- 9:54Speaker 1: car totally especially and like, yeah, if I guess maybe
- 9:59Speaker 1: if you really want to get a photo or like
- 10:02Speaker 1: get something signed, but they often don't do that, like
- 10:04Speaker 1: they're just walking. It's just it's crazy. And yeah, this
- 10:11Speaker 1: is just like two insane people like doing the Spider
- 10:15Speaker 1: Man pointing meme.
- 10:18Speaker 2: If you would like to know more about Club Shalla May,
- 10:20Speaker 2: I'll direct you to what I think is like the
- 10:23Speaker 2: most thorough analysis in timeline of the of Club Shallow
- 10:30Speaker 2: May by our sister pod Eating for Free.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Oh yeah, they did a really good multi episode.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I don't remember if I listened to the whole thing.
- 10:39Speaker 2: I just remember it being extremely thorough. But yeah, okay,
- 10:44Speaker 2: thank you for updating me on that. It seems kind
- 10:46Speaker 2: of wild, Like I know that she the Club Schalome
- 10:49Speaker 2: is kind of crazy, but I did not. I don't
- 10:52Speaker 2: see her as someone that would attract drama. She seems
- 10:54Speaker 2: like someone who just is this kind of fly on
- 10:57Speaker 2: the wall that screams very loudly.
- 10:59Speaker 1: She does say highly incendiary things she does. And the
- 11:03Speaker 1: thing is, she has been celebritized by the internet. You know,
- 11:07Speaker 1: she was like she's been a Twitter main character of
- 11:12Speaker 1: the day for so many days and people have made
- 11:16Speaker 1: her a celebrity in and of herself. And you know,
- 11:19Speaker 1: like even you know pot like podcasts we listen to
- 11:23Speaker 1: or like, you know, writers whose substacks we read like
- 11:28Speaker 1: they they covered her like she was a beat. She
- 11:31Speaker 1: is a she is a meme. She's like she's kind
- 11:34Speaker 1: of a person people stand in this weird like negative,
- 11:40Speaker 1: uh you know, fetishistic like Shoden Freudist kind of way.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I'm I just has she ever done
- 11:50Speaker 2: like a podcast interview? I feel like I need to
- 11:52Speaker 2: hear her speak.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I feel like I want I don't want to hear
- 11:55Speaker 1: her speak. I feel like, yeah, I feel like silence women.
- 11:58Speaker 2: I need to hear speak. I want like here like
- 12:02Speaker 2: what I feel like I have a hard time grasping
- 12:04Speaker 2: what would how someone would come to that mental state?
- 12:07Speaker 2: And I think here in her speak would give me
- 12:09Speaker 2: a better sense. But anyways, how do we get on
- 12:11Speaker 2: club schalllomet fashion week. Yes, oh fashion criticism, how our
- 12:16Speaker 2: bold killing him and how our best dress episode is
- 12:19Speaker 2: something that club shallow may should.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Listen to and should honestly create a Twitter account dedicated
- 12:25Speaker 1: not to our podcast, but just to that episode of
- 12:28Speaker 1: our podcast.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I would subscribe to a Twitter fandom
- 12:32Speaker 2: account that was just Disney Dresses, but because that does
- 12:37Speaker 2: not exist.
- 12:37Speaker 1: This I might already follow that.
- 12:40Speaker 2: The second best thing would be to listen to our
- 12:43Speaker 2: hour and forty minute Patreon only bonus episode on patreon
- 12:47Speaker 2: dot com slash like a version on most Beautiful Disney
- 12:50Speaker 2: Dresses Ranked. We like talk about what forty dresses, fifty
- 12:58Speaker 2: dresses us.
- 13:00Speaker 1: On outfits, Yes, ensembles because we did get a little
- 13:04Speaker 1: expansive in the subcategories.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Because we are inclusive.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Okay, yes, we are keeping DEI alive.
- 13:12Speaker 2: We did quite a lot of watching on Fire Island,
- 13:16Speaker 2: and while we were right after we had recorded the
- 13:20Speaker 2: Dresses episode, we did watch ever After, which I think
- 13:22Speaker 2: if it were in Disney Kennon, which it's not even
- 13:24Speaker 2: though it is in Disney. Plus, I think that's some
- 13:27Speaker 2: things that Angelica Houston wears in the ever in ever
- 13:31Speaker 2: After would absolutely have ranked.
- 13:33Speaker 1: She had some incredible head pieces. Also some of Drew's looks.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I mean, you know, there's obviously the look that she
- 13:40Speaker 1: wears the ball, which is iconic. I think her red
- 13:45Speaker 1: dress that she wears to go meet the Prince at
- 13:48Speaker 1: the Ruins. I think you were asleep while we were
- 13:50Speaker 1: watching it last night. I did post it on my
- 13:52Speaker 1: Instagram story. Is it's like this red velvet. It's so incredible.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Her tits look amazing. Also, I really like the outfit
- 13:59Speaker 1: she wears at the very end after she's become queen.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Oh, I'm looking at this now.
- 14:04Speaker 1: I really want to have like a medieval girl summer
- 14:09Speaker 1: into autumn.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Yeah. I think this it's giving ren fair I think
- 14:13Speaker 2: I also like to in line with ever After. I
- 14:18Speaker 2: think it's like fairies really need to come back in
- 14:21Speaker 2: a big way. I kind of but not radical fairies,
- 14:23Speaker 2: not radical fairies.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I actually don't think fairies need to come back. I
- 14:27Speaker 1: think wenches need to come back. I kind of disagree
- 14:31Speaker 1: because hot Wench summer. I think fairies are always fairies
- 14:35Speaker 1: have never gone away.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Well, okay, I can get behind hot Wench summer, but
- 14:38Speaker 2: my issue is how close it is to like a
- 14:42Speaker 2: hot witch summer. And I was thinking about this honestly
- 14:45Speaker 2: as we were prepping for this episode. We do not
- 14:48Speaker 2: have any fairies in media. We do not have any
- 14:50Speaker 2: mermaids in media. Okay, we barely have horse girls in media.
- 14:55Speaker 2: But witches are abundant, which is heavy.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Thank god, But we are we are in a period
- 15:01Speaker 1: of witch resurgence right now that is cresting towards Practical
- 15:05Speaker 1: Magic two coming out.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Yes, and I agree, and when that movie comes out,
- 15:09Speaker 2: witches will be over because we'll be like, okay, no
- 15:12Speaker 2: more witches. But I just was thinking about how there
- 15:16Speaker 2: and we talked about this in our Fer and Gully
- 15:18Speaker 2: Bunnett's episode, but like, there really are no canonical fairy
- 15:23Speaker 2: movies outside of Fern Gully and like one other we
- 15:26Speaker 2: talked to Peter Pan, there's like a few mermaid movies there.
- 15:30Speaker 1: You know, where the fairies are currently are books because
- 15:34Speaker 1: with the explosion of Romanticy, every book is fairy poorn.
- 15:40Speaker 1: You know, Sarah J. Moss like created a whole industry
- 15:44Speaker 1: around this. So I do think that maybe like in
- 15:49Speaker 1: a couple years, when we start seeing film adaptations of
- 15:53Speaker 1: those Romanticy books, then we're gonna have a wave of
- 15:58Speaker 1: fairy uh. Takeover, which you will be ready and waiting
- 16:05Speaker 1: to be uh loaded up by.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Well, I was I I think I remember you talking
- 16:13Speaker 2: about this when the you know, Connor story Hudson Williams
- 16:16Speaker 2: fairy Porn audio fairy porn came out and.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Were they like their wings were erotically charged, right.
- 16:24Speaker 2: But my thing is that I I I know, I
- 16:29Speaker 2: just people don't read ros people.
- 16:32Speaker 1: That's that's really not true.
- 16:35Speaker 2: No, no, people are not reading people don't read books.
- 16:38Speaker 1: That's not true. The book industry is it really is.
- 16:43Speaker 2: No, and and and people don't read books, and so
- 16:45Speaker 2: a bunch of fairy books that's just not going to
- 16:48Speaker 2: penetrate the culture.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Rose well, but that's what I'm saying is once they
- 16:51Speaker 1: become movies that which.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Willate the culture three to three, three to seven years.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Maybe it's actually I'm surprised that like none of the
- 17:00Speaker 1: Sarah J. Moss books, I think there was supposed to
- 17:02Speaker 1: be a Hulu TV show adaptation. They're so bad. Though,
- 17:08Speaker 1: I do think they could use a little a little
- 17:11Speaker 1: sprinkle of what Twilight got when it was adapted into
- 17:15Speaker 1: film and they made it cool in a way that
- 17:18Speaker 1: the books never were before. You know, the Twilight Renaissance
- 17:20Speaker 1: in twenty twenty.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Now I want to read that fairy book. What is
- 17:24Speaker 2: it called again?
- 17:25Speaker 1: A Court of Thorns and Roses? Don't read it? Oh,
- 17:28Speaker 1: it's the most heterosexual thing ever?
- 17:32Speaker 2: Is Was there another? Is this is Sarah J. Moss?
- 17:35Speaker 1: Yes? Okay, she also has another series that I haven't read.
- 17:39Speaker 1: I think Throne of Glass question remark. I read like
- 17:45Speaker 1: the first four of the Court of Thorns and Roses
- 17:48Speaker 1: books because I was bored in La one summer, and
- 17:51Speaker 1: they are really, really badly written. It's it's like, is
- 17:57Speaker 1: there the men book? The men are always growling, and
- 18:02Speaker 1: the there's this funny thing where the main girl she's
- 18:06Speaker 1: constantly talking about how when she's scared, her bowels turned
- 18:10Speaker 1: to water. It's a phrase that's used over and over again.
- 18:13Speaker 1: So I'm like, this girl is constantly shitting herself in beer.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Wait? What?
- 18:18Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 18:20Speaker 2: That is crazy. Yeah, but it's not erotic or it is.
- 18:25Speaker 1: No, the books erotic. The shitting herself is not erotic.
- 18:29Speaker 1: So sorry, the books are poorn.
- 18:31Speaker 2: And is there a good fairy book?
- 18:34Speaker 1: No? Uh, not comes to mind, not that I've read.
- 18:39Speaker 2: We should we should co write it?
- 18:41Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, well, finally we'll finally do our Midsummer Night's
- 18:45Speaker 1: Dream adaptation.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Oh right, okay, sounds good.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Midsummer Night's Scream Cream Cream Cream back shots in the
- 18:56Speaker 1: back rooms.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Speaking of our bonus episodes, I want to let you
- 19:00Speaker 2: virgins know that we are recording two bonus episodes per month.
- 19:04Speaker 2: This is a new update.
- 19:07Speaker 1: It's a new tran date from Like a Virgin headquarters.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Yes, this is a woman date on the Like a
- 19:13Speaker 2: Virgin Patreon. If you subscribe at patreon dot com slash
- 19:17Speaker 2: like a Virgin, you will get two bonus episodes per month. Now,
- 19:21Speaker 2: starting in July, the first bonus episode will be putting out.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Wait is this correct? The Confessions because that comes out
- 19:29Speaker 2: first week of July.
- 19:31Speaker 1: It comes out this week. I think.
- 19:33Speaker 2: So we are doing a deep dive on the original
- 19:37Speaker 2: Confessions album.
- 19:38Speaker 1: And also I think Madonna kind of generally, I think
- 19:42Speaker 1: that era.
- 19:42Speaker 2: I think we should focus on that era of Madonna,
- 19:45Speaker 2: the Confessions era, the videos, what Madonna was doing at
- 19:48Speaker 2: that time. And I also think analyzing the Confessions era
- 19:51Speaker 2: in relation to her other eras. And I think you
- 19:54Speaker 2: and I slightly disagree on this if I remember correctly,
- 19:57Speaker 2: but I would say that was her kind of last
- 19:59Speaker 2: good era of music and aesthetic that that her follow
- 20:03Speaker 2: her eras after that were a kind of Madonna that
- 20:08Speaker 2: I really personally hate to see.
- 20:10Speaker 1: And what's my opinion on that. You'll have to subscribe
- 20:13Speaker 1: at patreon dot com slash like a Virgin to find
- 20:15Speaker 1: out in our bonus episode coming soon. We're really excited
- 20:20Speaker 1: to be doing two bonus episodes a month. I think
- 20:24Speaker 1: both Fran and I have just been feeling as we've
- 20:27Speaker 1: like reinvigorated the podcast, that we just like rediscovered our
- 20:32Speaker 1: love for doing this. And also I think, especially in
- 20:37Speaker 1: those deep dive episodes, into like putting a lot of
- 20:40Speaker 1: work and research into them and really, you know, going
- 20:44Speaker 1: back to the original conceit of this podcast, which was,
- 20:48Speaker 1: you know, doing these smart but funny deep dives on
- 20:53Speaker 1: pieces of our shared you know, pop cultural history.
- 20:58Speaker 2: So you if you ever listen to the free episodes
- 21:01Speaker 2: on the RSS feed and you're like the conversation is
- 21:04Speaker 2: so meandering, I don't really know what they're talking about,
- 21:06Speaker 2: or it's like two topical research like blah blah blah,
- 21:10Speaker 2: like no fact checking, blah blah blah. Like that's because
- 21:13Speaker 2: that's what these episodes are for. They're for Rose and
- 21:16Speaker 2: I catch up on the culture and kind of bop
- 21:19Speaker 2: around on topics where our Deep Dive episodes have a
- 21:23Speaker 2: little more thoroughness to them.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Oh can I wait? Can I say now? I just
- 21:28Speaker 1: want to say something really quickly. Yes, unrelated. The amount
- 21:35Speaker 1: of Virgins who have reached out either in the comments
- 21:40Speaker 1: on Spotify or Patreon or over dms or email in
- 21:44Speaker 1: some cases, to you know, give their condolences about my
- 21:49Speaker 1: grandma Harriet passing has just been really sweet and has
- 21:54Speaker 1: made me feel very held and loved. For the past
- 21:56Speaker 1: past couple of weeks, some of you have shared stories
- 21:59Speaker 1: about your own grandmothers that have literally brought me to tears.
- 22:04Speaker 1: And I really appreciate that and this community that we
- 22:09Speaker 1: have here, which I think, you know, like really has
- 22:13Speaker 1: the opportunity to grow now that we're back, and like
- 22:17Speaker 1: really passionate about this again.
- 22:20Speaker 2: I honestly love the Virgins, and I.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Love the Virgins so much. Y'all are the best ever.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Please continue to recruit a lot of people don't even
- 22:31Speaker 2: know we have we still have a podcast. I feel
- 22:33Speaker 2: like I'm asked every week, Oh, whatever happened to like
- 22:35Speaker 2: a Virgin? I miss like a Virgin?
- 22:37Speaker 1: We're like Diva totally.
- 22:39Speaker 2: It's on. Anyways, evangelize to the virgins in your life
- 22:43Speaker 2: and thank you for lifting up our Darling Rose.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Let's talk about some of the some of the culture
- 22:50Speaker 1: we've been consuming, some of the stuff we some of
- 22:54Speaker 1: the other stuff we watched, Listen to what we were
- 22:57Speaker 1: on the island.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Books, music, yeah, let's do so.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Let's do some quick Let's do some quick book wrecks.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Okay, we I think you have one and.
- 23:05Speaker 1: I have one yes on the island. This week I
- 23:10Speaker 1: read an advanced copy of a novel that I was
- 23:12Speaker 1: gifted at last week's Pride Book Fair, which I was
- 23:15Speaker 1: lucky enough to be part of. I got to lead
- 23:18Speaker 1: a panel with Jeff Hiller, Ros Hernandez and Elliott Glazer
- 23:22Speaker 1: and signed copies of my books. I met some virgins there,
- 23:25Speaker 1: which was so cool. But while I was there, I
- 23:28Speaker 1: was gifted in advanced copy of the novel Carrying by
- 23:32Speaker 1: Samantha Josephs. And it's one of the best books I've
- 23:37Speaker 1: read this year. Down as Frank can attest, I was
- 23:42Speaker 1: reading it by the pool, cackling all all weekend. I
- 23:47Speaker 1: finished the book in like two and a half days.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I don't want to give too much away because you
- 23:53Speaker 1: know it doesn't come out for a couple of months,
- 23:54Speaker 1: and I definitely will mention this again closer to launch
- 23:59Speaker 1: so that y'all know, But put those preorders in now.
- 24:04Speaker 1: As a debut author, Samantha Joseph's is a debut author.
- 24:09Speaker 1: I mean, for all authors that you care about, pre
- 24:12Speaker 1: orders are insanely important. Pre order the paperback copy of
- 24:18Speaker 1: Best Woman, coming out September twenty third. This novel is
- 24:23Speaker 1: about a trans woman named Martha who's thirty nine and
- 24:26Speaker 1: living in la and she is stealth to the extreme,
- 24:32Speaker 1: so stealth that her husband does not know she's trans.
- 24:37Speaker 1: And the book opens with her faking a miscarriage. And
- 24:42Speaker 1: it's this sort of trans body horror where we have
- 24:46Speaker 1: this protagonist who is like the perfect housewife. She suddenly
- 24:49Speaker 1: starts having these weird symptoms and the only way to
- 24:52Speaker 1: treat them is by eating rotten meat and other crazy things.
- 25:00Speaker 1: And then miraculously she gets pregnant, which is which is crazy.
- 25:08Speaker 2: It's a perfect perfect conceit for a book.
- 25:10Speaker 1: It's psychotic, it's so funny, it's so tense. I spent
- 25:17Speaker 1: so much of the book just on the night on
- 25:20Speaker 1: the knife's edge of tension because this character is doing
- 25:24Speaker 1: so much lying and keeping so many balls, like juggling
- 25:28Speaker 1: in the air, and then all of a sudden she's
- 25:30Speaker 1: having I mean, not a virgin birth, but a miraculous birth. Yeah,
- 25:35Speaker 1: it's incredible. It's gross, like really nasty, it's sexy at
- 25:42Speaker 1: certain points, it is incredible. I'm really excited for Samantha
- 25:49Speaker 1: Joseph's and what she does next, And just like this book,
- 25:53Speaker 1: I think it's going to be a huge hit and
- 25:55Speaker 1: definitely read it when it comes out October sixth.
- 25:58Speaker 2: We need more representation for immaculate conception that I think,
- 26:04Speaker 2: like when Sydney Sweeney did What's what's the fucking movie
- 26:07Speaker 2: it's called? It's called like.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Immaculate, immaculate, which I think, on further reflection, was not
- 26:14Speaker 1: as good as I initially thought.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Of, a really boring movie with like the best ending ever.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Yes to me, like that you should fucking ending. Ever,
- 26:22Speaker 2: just watch the end if.
- 26:23Speaker 1: You're gonna, yeah, watch the end and then watch the
- 26:26Speaker 1: first omen because that's a much better pregnancy body horror movie.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Love it. I'm probably gonna borrow it from you. Honestly,
- 26:36Speaker 2: I would say we could trade, but I don't think
- 26:38Speaker 2: you will like the book that I'm reading, which is
- 26:40Speaker 2: called Paradise Logic by Sophie Kemp. I can't remember the
- 26:43Speaker 2: last time I was in a bookstore and I just
- 26:47Speaker 2: like wandered in the bookstore, was browsing casually. I look
- 26:50Speaker 2: at the table of books, I go, oh, that's an
- 26:52Speaker 2: interesting cover. I flip it around. I read the first
- 26:55Speaker 2: few pages, and I go, huh, I'm gonna buy this book.
- 26:58Speaker 1: I love that. I actually I don't. When I saw
- 27:02Speaker 1: this book. I've had that same experience with this book
- 27:06Speaker 1: many times in bookstores, where it's like, oh, that looks
- 27:08Speaker 1: really interesting, I should buy it, and I just never
- 27:11Speaker 1: did well.
- 27:12Speaker 2: I never browse for books like that. I always either
- 27:15Speaker 2: buy books because I hear about them, or I you know,
- 27:19Speaker 2: a friend wrote it, or it's sent to me or whatever.
- 27:22Speaker 2: And this book is about a young woman named Reality Con.
- 27:26Speaker 2: She's like twenty three year old. She's a twenty three
- 27:28Speaker 2: year old Zeine maker. I would describe her as a
- 27:32Speaker 2: kind of contemporary fairal woman, Like she's pretty stupid. She's
- 27:37Speaker 2: like really really stupid.
- 27:40Speaker 1: She like dumb bitch representation.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Yes, it's dumb bitch representation. It's also like a kind
- 27:45Speaker 2: of I would say, egirl epic. She is like lives
- 27:50Speaker 2: in a nasty little apartment and like she like has
- 27:53Speaker 2: regular sex with a drug dealer and she has zero
- 27:56Speaker 2: aspirations in life. And the voice of the author is
- 28:00Speaker 2: extremely funny. It's very like brain dead e girl. And
- 28:06Speaker 2: then there's also this like kind of ferrality to it
- 28:09Speaker 2: and almost alien quality, like she's still learning how to
- 28:12Speaker 2: speak English. Sometimes it's very funny. And the whole like
- 28:17Speaker 2: plot is that she did upon uh once after having
- 28:22Speaker 2: one discussion with her fuck buddy, decides that she now
- 28:26Speaker 2: aspires to be the greatest girlfriend of all time, and
- 28:29Speaker 2: she is like questing through Brooklyn to try and find
- 28:33Speaker 2: a boyfriend. And that's it the beginning, I would say,
- 28:37Speaker 2: the open the introduction to this novel, which has like
- 28:41Speaker 2: a different voice, and POV is so beautiful, like it's
- 28:47Speaker 2: it's so stunning and and strings together the story, the
- 28:53Speaker 2: contemporary story of reality can to an archaic like history
- 28:59Speaker 2: of girlfriends and boyfriends dating all the way back to
- 29:03Speaker 2: Adam and Eve, and it's really and it's just it's
- 29:06Speaker 2: just a really hilarious kind of voice. I don't think
- 29:10Speaker 2: it feels particularly plotted, which is why I don't think
- 29:13Speaker 2: it's really for you. It's definitely not, but it is
- 29:18Speaker 2: slightly surreal and it is very funny.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I wish I could read kind of atmospheric novels
- 29:26Speaker 1: like that, but I really need a driving plot.
- 29:31Speaker 2: I like a book that feels like a real woman.
- 29:34Speaker 2: And it does feel like a kind of real woman,
- 29:36Speaker 2: somebody that I don't really want to meet, but somebody
- 29:39Speaker 2: that I love following around.
- 29:41Speaker 1: A real What do you mean by a real woman?
- 29:44Speaker 2: Like the realness? You know what I'm talking about?
- 29:48Speaker 1: So real, so real, so real. Okay, I'm thinking to
- 29:57Speaker 1: talk music.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Yeah, let's talk music, so I'll get this out of
- 30:02Speaker 2: the way. Right before the recording started, I was like,
- 30:04Speaker 2: oh my god, you have to listen to this this
- 30:07Speaker 2: song that our darling Cherry sent me. She sent it
- 30:11Speaker 2: to me like I think, probably two or three in
- 30:13Speaker 2: the morning, probably a little cross faded, and it was
- 30:16Speaker 2: like this this message that was kind of like I
- 30:17Speaker 2: love you, I love you my friend, like be just
- 30:19Speaker 2: it's like a really cute when you you know, when
- 30:21Speaker 2: you sometimes you said like your friend or a loved one,
- 30:23Speaker 2: like a drunk messenger, You're like, I love you so much.
- 30:25Speaker 2: I'm just so happy to have you in my life.
- 30:27Speaker 2: She sent me a message like that, and then she
- 30:28Speaker 2: sent me a link to a song from the Sonic
- 30:34Speaker 2: the Hedgehog soundtrack. It is the Sonic Are Original soundtrack.
- 30:39Speaker 2: This song she sent me was let Me Find It.
- 30:46Speaker 2: It's called Diamond and the Rough. But the song that
- 30:50Speaker 2: I sent to you is can You Feel the Sunshine?
- 30:54Speaker 2: This whole album slaps I like like opened it up
- 30:59Speaker 2: and I was like, oh my god, this is the
- 31:02Speaker 2: This song is kind of crazy good, even though it's
- 31:05Speaker 2: giving video game soundtrack. But then I remember that the
- 31:07Speaker 2: things that we like to listen to and all the
- 31:10Speaker 2: music that's trending is video game soundtrack.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Very true, And I.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Want to know what did you think of it?
- 31:17Speaker 1: I thought it was really fun. I was kind of
- 31:19Speaker 1: finding myself wishing we had been listening to it by
- 31:21Speaker 1: the pool.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it was giving. It's giving pool side hyper pop.
- 31:26Speaker 1: It's kind of like, okay, it could go on your
- 31:28Speaker 1: Prozac Bops playlist.
- 31:29Speaker 2: It could go on my Prozac Bops playlist. It could
- 31:31Speaker 2: be well, it's not the right era, but it yeah, yeah, true,
- 31:35Speaker 2: but it was giving, Like Okay, lou On like crack.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's very nightcore remix of a song that
- 31:44Speaker 1: was already a hyper to begin with, right right, but
- 31:49Speaker 1: it makes me want to be ass out by the pool.
- 31:52Speaker 2: I uh yeah. And if you if you want something
- 31:56Speaker 2: delicious and silly to add to a playlist, I would
- 31:59Speaker 2: recommend these songs. Like our original soundtrack, we also listened
- 32:05Speaker 2: to Wink Wank. It took us a couple of days
- 32:08Speaker 2: to listen to it.
- 32:10Speaker 1: Yes, the new Charlie XX song. I didn't listen to
- 32:14Speaker 1: the song, but I did watch the video, so I
- 32:17Speaker 1: did listen to the song, but with the additive visual medium,
- 32:22Speaker 1: and I liked it. I think it's me. Is it
- 32:26Speaker 1: my favorite of the singles she's released so far? No,
- 32:29Speaker 1: I think Spring. I think Spring Summer twenty six is
- 32:32Speaker 1: still my favorite. But I really liked this.
- 32:35Speaker 2: I am excited for this album. I think I really
- 32:41Speaker 2: love an album artist, and Charlie to me is very
- 32:44Speaker 2: much so an album artist, like for sure, always creating
- 32:48Speaker 2: a world or a concept or an aesthetic within a package,
- 32:52Speaker 2: and this is clearly no different. She claims in interviews
- 32:58Speaker 2: that it's not a rock albums, so I'm not going
- 33:01Speaker 2: to call it a rock album. But it's definitely all
- 33:03Speaker 2: three singles that have been released very explicitly referenced rock
- 33:07Speaker 2: music and sample a certain kind of sound that's reminiscent
- 33:12Speaker 2: of a kind of you know, speed garage aesthetic or honestly,
- 33:18Speaker 2: sometimes the Smith, the Smith's, sometimes the Cure. Honestly, Charlie
- 33:24Speaker 2: also references Robert Smith quite a bit in her.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Also kind of like lou Reed vibes a little bit.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Charlie's a big lou Reed fan. Charlie loves men who
- 33:35Speaker 1: make She does love men who make music, yes, and
- 33:40Speaker 1: I think as most female pop stars do.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Unfortunately, and I hate to compare the two, but because
- 33:48Speaker 2: this album, because the singles that have been released so
- 33:51Speaker 2: far do feel a little bit like this era of
- 33:54Speaker 2: the Cure, I have to compare it to Olivia Rigo's album,
- 33:59Speaker 2: And I'm kind of like, is Charlie going to release
- 34:02Speaker 2: a rock album that had the teeth that we were
- 34:05Speaker 2: looking for with Olivia? Like, Charlie to me is kind
- 34:09Speaker 2: of queen of the raw edges. She's kind of queen
- 34:12Speaker 2: of the unvarnished like dirty girl, girl who fucks kind
- 34:16Speaker 2: of esthetic. But I also know that that it's not
- 34:20Speaker 2: but it's not pop punk. It's not super sweet like Olivia.
- 34:24Speaker 2: It's not. It doesn't have the beautiful melodies that Olivia has.
- 34:27Speaker 2: So maybe it's silly to compare them, but I.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Know I don't. I don't think it's silly because it's
- 34:32Speaker 1: it's similar. I think where it is, I think living
- 34:39Speaker 1: in a similar space that I do. Think pop stars
- 34:43Speaker 1: are coming to more now. I think everyone is kind
- 34:46Speaker 1: of in or entering their rock era. Yeah, and really
- 34:51Speaker 1: like not even just lyrically, but like the production in
- 34:57Speaker 1: Charlie's songs so far have more of that grit we
- 35:00Speaker 1: were really missing on the Olivia tracks, you know, saying
- 35:04Speaker 1: that everything on that album, as much as we liked
- 35:08Speaker 1: a lot of the songs, everything just sounded a little
- 35:10Speaker 1: too perfect. And with Charlie like it, like everything Charlie
- 35:16Speaker 1: does is always well produced, because like that is like
- 35:19Speaker 1: really the place where it seems like she comes from
- 35:22Speaker 1: first is like songwriting and production more than like vocal performance,
- 35:29Speaker 1: And so the production has felt really intentional, Like I
- 35:33Speaker 1: love like Spring Summer twenty six, I love how like
- 35:35Speaker 1: quiet it is on Wink Wink, Like there's there's just
- 35:39Speaker 1: like a lot more texture in the music than there
- 35:43Speaker 1: was on the Olivia album. But I kind of like
- 35:47Speaker 1: the Olivia album more because I do think with rock particularly,
- 35:53Speaker 1: I am drawn to rock with a really good singer,
- 35:58Speaker 1: and Charlie is not an amazing singer, Like I think.
- 36:02Speaker 2: She doesn't have to because the autotune, you know, Yeah,
- 36:05Speaker 2: but I guess she does a lot of like monotone.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Singing too, yeah and well, And I think the stuff
- 36:12Speaker 1: that she's done so far, like bringing everything into a
- 36:15Speaker 1: little bit of like a grungier lower like minor key,
- 36:20Speaker 1: almost does allow her v do allow her vocals to
- 36:26Speaker 1: shine a little bit more like. I actually think she
- 36:28Speaker 1: sounds really nice on this most recent song and on
- 36:30Speaker 1: Spring Summer twenty six.
- 36:32Speaker 2: I was just about to say Spring Summer twenty six,
- 36:34Speaker 2: she sounds on autotuned. I mean she probably was, but
- 36:38Speaker 2: she sounds really like.
- 36:40Speaker 1: It's not the kind of distortion where you used to yes.
- 36:43Speaker 2: And I loved that. I thought it was so nice. Yeah,
- 36:47Speaker 2: it's I think cher When we were talking about Olivia
- 36:53Speaker 2: on our last episode, I was just thinking more about
- 36:56Speaker 2: what is kind of missing from the Olivia package, and
- 36:59Speaker 2: then I thought about the NYMPHA alumni episode explaining the
- 37:06Speaker 2: cherry dark feminine archetype which I had talked to you,
- 37:10Speaker 2: said to you as kind of the fairy girl esthetic, huh,
- 37:13Speaker 2: And it's this, It's something about this like slightly innocent
- 37:16Speaker 2: but like dark sexy femme that is like kind of goth,
- 37:21Speaker 2: kind of alt kind of Spencer's gifts. And I think
- 37:26Speaker 2: that that's something that Olivia is like vying for but
- 37:29Speaker 2: actually is not really selling to me. And that's just
- 37:32Speaker 2: something that Charlie has always been.
- 37:34Speaker 1: I mean, Charlie's she's not authentically like I We've all
- 37:39Speaker 1: seen the u ha ha ha video, Like we know
- 37:42Speaker 1: she was like having her parents drive her to perform
- 37:45Speaker 1: at raves when she was a teenager, like she is,
- 37:48Speaker 1: she's a party girl. And so her making this kind
- 37:51Speaker 1: of rock tinged music like makes more sense than you know, Olivia.
- 37:58Speaker 1: But the thing but like Olivia does have the I
- 38:01Speaker 1: think her pen is stronger than Charlie's.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Do you mean in terms of lyricism.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Lyricism and I think and and like, I think like
- 38:10Speaker 1: poetic lyricism like Charlie. I love how raw and honest
- 38:16Speaker 1: her lyrics like yes, like especially in this new song
- 38:20Speaker 1: Wink Wink, it is so confessional, like she's talking about
- 38:23Speaker 1: how she like people said she dressed slutty, and so
- 38:26Speaker 1: now she shops.
- 38:26Speaker 2: At APC specifically name checks Rassam the yeah d different
- 38:31Speaker 2: Vampire Weekend. I guess the musician from Vampire Weekend.
- 38:33Speaker 1: It's yeah. I mean, it's very different kinds of songwriting.
- 38:37Speaker 1: It's just like, I'm always gonna prefer a really beautiful
- 38:40Speaker 1: voice like Olivia's singing basically any kind of music, right,
- 38:45Speaker 1: I but but I might. I think we were gonna
- 38:48Speaker 1: we might agree that when the album comes out, because Charlie,
- 38:52Speaker 1: I agree, is an album artist. I probably, I'm guessing
- 38:57Speaker 1: now will ultimately like that album as a whole more
- 39:00Speaker 1: than I like. Olivia's not to pit women against each other.
- 39:03Speaker 2: But we are and we do. I'll be curious, like, yeah,
- 39:08Speaker 2: what the rest of the album would give If she's
- 39:09Speaker 2: saying it's not a rock album. I'm curious if it
- 39:12Speaker 2: actually willer won't be, especially since like Beyonce's Renaissance Act
- 39:17Speaker 2: three is allegedly a rock album. I feel like last
- 39:20Speaker 2: year the kind of Geese is once happened.
- 39:24Speaker 1: Again. We've had to have this conversation many times. It's
- 39:29Speaker 1: because they are they are emerging for the first time.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Sorry debut, the they debut of Geese and the their
- 39:36Speaker 2: throttle into full fucking like megalomania.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Cultural I've never listened to Geese.
- 39:44Speaker 2: I tried, I I I love that the guitarist is
- 39:49Speaker 2: trans transgender.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Oh I didn't know that.
- 39:51Speaker 2: I know most people don't. I think she's trying to
- 39:54Speaker 2: be stell sorry trans guitarists that I just doubted, but
- 39:58Speaker 2: she But yeah, I love that people listen to it.
- 40:02Speaker 2: I like that people are listening to like really thrashy,
- 40:05Speaker 2: kind of untethered no bpm kind of rock ensemble.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Well, it's it does seem to me to line up
- 40:17Speaker 1: with the larger cultural shift away from AI and anything
- 40:25Speaker 1: that's artificially crafted and so like returning to these forms
- 40:29Speaker 1: of music that are more analog like that really tracks
- 40:33Speaker 1: for me.
- 40:34Speaker 2: Yes, And also like, in terms of the ethos of rock,
- 40:40Speaker 2: obviously so many different kind of movements in rock history
- 40:43Speaker 2: that someone can explain better, but thinking about how very
- 40:49Speaker 2: often rock artists rock aesthetic is in opposition to right
- 40:55Speaker 2: and how we in this culture are currently in opposition
- 40:59Speaker 2: to a lot of things. It captures a the dare
- 41:04Speaker 2: I say, rage or an anguish or a nihilism that
- 41:09Speaker 2: I think I personally would be really looking forward to,
- 41:12Speaker 2: which is why I'm rooting for Charlie's album to be
- 41:14Speaker 2: a full rock album. I'm rooting for the kind of
- 41:17Speaker 2: rock renaissance, and that would be a rock that would
- 41:20Speaker 2: be yes, okay.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Pop rock, Yes, pop punk.
- 41:23Speaker 2: I mean Coping Mechanism by Willow the standard, the gold standard. Absolutely, Okay.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Uh, we talk TV, Yeah, let's talk to you the Dragon.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Is there even anything that we can say about the
- 41:41Speaker 2: new House of Dragon outside of the fact that I mean,
- 41:45Speaker 2: we're really just rooting for the dragons here.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Yeah. And this is the hard part is that we're
- 41:50Speaker 1: entering the period where you're reminded, oh right, this is
- 41:54Speaker 1: the war where all the dragons die.
- 41:58Speaker 2: It's and every time it happens, it's so upsetting. It's
- 42:01Speaker 2: so much more upsetting when a dragon dies than when
- 42:05Speaker 2: a human being.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Dies, oh one thousand.
- 42:08Speaker 2: And It's like, at a certain point it's like, I'm
- 42:10Speaker 2: not a Democrat, I'm not a Republican. I am in
- 42:13Speaker 2: the Dragon party.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Okay, I'm yes, Like I'm team Black because Rania is
- 42:19Speaker 1: the rightful heir to the throne and I love her,
- 42:23Speaker 1: but I'm team Dragons.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Uh.
- 42:26Speaker 1: That that they're who I care about. And I did
- 42:29Speaker 1: appreciate that this episode there there were a lot of dragons,
- 42:35Speaker 1: like that's something something I'm disappointed in about the show
- 42:39Speaker 1: often is that there's not enough dragon stuff. But this
- 42:42Speaker 1: episode was chalk full of.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Dragons, beautiful dragons, dragon's being dragons doing like quiet beautiful things.
- 42:50Speaker 1: I mean like Baylor's dragon being named moon Dancer. That's
- 42:54Speaker 1: such a gorgeous name for.
- 42:56Speaker 2: A dragon, and uh.
- 42:59Speaker 1: George R. Mar And really popped off with that one.
- 43:02Speaker 2: It's gotta be a fairy name as well.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Your moon Dancer totally is for sure a fair name. Totally.
- 43:08Speaker 1: I've seen her at the Maypole, something that.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Was interested to me. So virgins who may maybe did
- 43:14Speaker 2: or did not watch the episode, Raniera has essentially somewhat functionally,
- 43:21Speaker 2: maybe not fully effectively reclaimed the throne. She has sat
- 43:26Speaker 2: back on the iron throne, storming the castle with four dragons.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Question Mark, it was, yes, so it was her with
- 43:34Speaker 1: Cyrax Damon with kaxies and then the two uh dragon riders,
- 43:40Speaker 1: Alf and the other guy.
- 43:43Speaker 2: Yes, there were there were four and upon. There's a
- 43:47Speaker 2: lot of stuff that happens. But the thing that I
- 43:49Speaker 2: wanted to discuss with you. Is that at the very
- 43:51Speaker 2: end of the so in this like takeover, she has
- 43:55Speaker 2: already kind of done some political espionage and colluded with
- 44:05Speaker 2: Allison and said, Okay, if you can lure Aiden Agon,
- 44:11Speaker 2: if you can lure Egon away from the castle, I'll
- 44:14Speaker 2: take it over and I'll let you go for it.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Well, no, that was not the deal. Actually she was
- 44:19Speaker 1: supposed she was. No, she was supposed to hand Eggon over.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Allison literally traded Agon and aimed away to Ranier. She
- 44:29Speaker 1: was like, you can kill them as long as you
- 44:32Speaker 1: let me and Helena escape. I want this to be over, okay. So,
- 44:37Speaker 1: so that's why Rania was so pissed when Agon wasn't there,
- 44:42Speaker 1: when she was like find me, yes, uh she So
- 44:52Speaker 1: Allison's end of the bargain was you know, she was
- 44:54Speaker 1: supposed to make sure that it was easy for them
- 44:56Speaker 1: to get into the castle, and that was why she
- 44:58Speaker 1: was running around on talking to this people. She did
- 45:01Speaker 1: do that. She followed through on her half of the bargain.
- 45:04Speaker 1: She almost got raped. She's really always going through it.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Last week she got non consensually kissed by her son.
- 45:12Speaker 1: This week she almost got fully raped by literally the
- 45:17Speaker 1: master of Laws.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Yeah, some dude who I've never paid attention to before
- 45:22Speaker 2: this moment. And yeah, anyways, but the thing the tea
- 45:26Speaker 2: at the end was that Allison, though trying to escape safely,
- 45:32Speaker 2: was in fact caught and brought back to Raniera. And
- 45:34Speaker 2: that's where the episode ends. And we see in the
- 45:36Speaker 2: episode preview for the next episode that Allison and Raniera
- 45:41Speaker 2: are still talking, perhaps plotting together, which means that ostensibly
- 45:45Speaker 2: Raniera has welcomed her back into her console. I want
- 45:49Speaker 2: to know what you think is going to happen in
- 45:50Speaker 2: that relationship.
- 45:51Speaker 1: I you know, it's interesting because I have the prior
- 45:56Speaker 1: knowledge of the source material. But the source material is
- 46:01Speaker 1: that relationship is the thing that's most different in the
- 46:04Speaker 1: show than in the source material because in the in
- 46:07Speaker 1: the book Fire and Blood, Allison is much older than Raniera,
- 46:10Speaker 1: they have no friendship that they just they just fucking
- 46:15Speaker 1: hate each other. So I do think like it's gonna
- 46:20Speaker 1: be more like, Okay, Allison's here, she's now a prisoner
- 46:24Speaker 1: of war essentially, but like she's at least safe, and
- 46:28Speaker 1: she's gonna be I think she's gonna fall back into
- 46:31Speaker 1: being Raniera's friend and hopefully they will finally fuck. I
- 46:36Speaker 1: actually don't think it's that out of the question that
- 46:38Speaker 1: they will hook up, because of everything they've done with
- 46:42Speaker 1: Rania and Massaria and how obsessed the fan base is
- 46:48Speaker 1: with them as a couple. I think we could be
- 46:50Speaker 1: actually getting uhar renear ascent at some point, I hope.
- 47:00Speaker 1: So I want to see them scissor on a dragon.
- 47:04Speaker 2: I want to see them sixty nine ing boots. Honestly,
- 47:10Speaker 2: I don't think I've ever really seen like girl to
- 47:13Speaker 2: girls sixty nineing and media outside of Blue is the
- 47:17Speaker 2: worm as color.
- 47:17Speaker 1: Oh wait, speaking of sixty nine ing, little quick, little plug,
- 47:22Speaker 1: I've started recently watching The Americans and then the opening.
- 47:26Speaker 1: It's so good.
- 47:27Speaker 2: By the way, what's the Americans? For?
- 47:28Speaker 1: The visins The Americans is Carrie Russell and Matthew Reese.
- 47:32Speaker 1: They are Russian spies who have inserted themselves into American life,
- 47:38Speaker 1: and they like fully have kids, they have a house,
- 47:41Speaker 1: they have a fake real estate business. But they are
- 47:43Speaker 1: Russian spies. And this is in nineteen eighty one, so
- 47:46Speaker 1: like peak Cold War, and so they're like always going
- 47:51Speaker 1: on these missions. They wear a lot of wigs. It's
- 47:53Speaker 1: really thrilling, amazing writing incredible acting. It's also where those
- 47:58Speaker 1: two actors who were playing Huz and wife they fell
- 48:01Speaker 1: in love irl as they were making the show, and
- 48:03Speaker 1: their chemistry is insane and the oh the first episode
- 48:10Speaker 1: of season two, their daughter walks in on them sixty
- 48:14Speaker 1: nine ing what, Yes, their daughter is like kind of
- 48:20Speaker 1: cottoning onto the fact that they hide things from her.
- 48:22Speaker 1: So she just walks into their room and they are
- 48:25Speaker 1: laid up in bed, sixty nine ing, it's so good.
- 48:30Speaker 2: That sounds amazing. That sounds like the representation I'm looking for.
- 48:33Speaker 1: All it is, it's you know what it is. It's
- 48:36Speaker 1: better than Salt, I'll say that.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Oh girl, we watched Salt on Fire Island. What an
- 48:45Speaker 2: incredibly mid if not mid to.
- 48:48Speaker 1: Bad movie, but still gaggy.
- 48:51Speaker 2: Well the name one thing that's gaggy aside from when
- 48:55Speaker 2: she jumped from car to car and when she dyed
- 48:57Speaker 2: her hair.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Uh, when she went on to cover as a man,
- 49:01Speaker 1: when she when she was in when she was in
- 49:04Speaker 1: the untrainy Valley.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Oh right, that was amazing. That made the whole movie
- 49:08Speaker 2: worth it for me. Okay, So for those the virgins.
- 49:11Speaker 2: Salt is a spy drama from twenty ten. Starring Angelina
- 49:17Speaker 2: Joe Lee. It is. That's pretty much all.
- 49:21Speaker 1: That's all you need to know. She famously, I had
- 49:25Speaker 1: not seen this since it originally came out, and the
- 49:27Speaker 1: only plot point I remembered was that at one point
- 49:30Speaker 1: she dyes her hair brown. H And that is kind
- 49:33Speaker 1: of the only really important thing you need to know
- 49:35Speaker 1: about the movie.
- 49:36Speaker 2: The other thing you need to know is that the
- 49:38Speaker 2: movie was written for Tom Cruise. So it's like very
- 49:41Speaker 2: obviously a kind of water down, Mission Impossible style film.
- 49:48Speaker 1: And the writing is bad.
- 49:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I was like, hmm, maybe women shouldn't be in movies. No,
- 49:56Speaker 2: I'm just kidding. That's like probably what I mean, it's
- 49:59Speaker 2: probably whatever single fucking film producer thought when this movie
- 50:03Speaker 2: came out, because it was not good, I wonder. But
- 50:05Speaker 2: let me see, I forgot that it was nominated for
- 50:08Speaker 2: Best Sound Mixing and at the eighties.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Did it tank at the box office?
- 50:12Speaker 2: Or well? No, no, it was.
- 50:13Speaker 1: It was.
- 50:14Speaker 2: It generally received positive reviews, with some criticism on the writing.
- 50:19Speaker 2: It grows two hundred and ninety four million worldwide.
- 50:22Speaker 1: Oh that's pretty that's pretty good for twenty It.
- 50:25Speaker 2: Makes sense because Angelina and Jolee. But the movie was
- 50:28Speaker 2: not good. I thought that like something like Laura like
- 50:33Speaker 2: tomb Raider. Her original tomb Raider, I would say, is better,
- 50:37Speaker 2: but only because it's campier.
- 50:39Speaker 1: I haven't seen those in so long. We should we should.
- 50:43Speaker 2: Uh, they're not amazing. They're not amazing.
- 50:45Speaker 1: We should watch them.
- 50:46Speaker 2: But they're not amazing. But they're better than Salt. I
- 50:49Speaker 2: was kind of thinking, like, what is the best female.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Oh, you would be, you would be. Tomb Raider would
- 50:54Speaker 1: be a great Halloween costume for you. Add that to
- 50:56Speaker 1: your list.
- 50:57Speaker 2: Oh my god, between that and.
- 50:58Speaker 1: With the pointy boom and fran Dresher.
- 51:02Speaker 2: Actually, that would be so hot.
- 51:06Speaker 1: Another film we watched was Escape Room two Tournament of
- 51:11Speaker 1: Champions from twenty twenty one. You might recall that we
- 51:15Speaker 1: watched the first Escape Room movie while we were in
- 51:19Speaker 1: Mexico City. I believe we talked about it on the
- 51:21Speaker 1: episode that we recorded there and so with our friends
- 51:24Speaker 1: on Fire Island. The other night we watched the shequel,
- 51:28Speaker 1: and you know, the premise didn't quite hold up. There
- 51:33Speaker 1: were some fun sequences, but altogether it was a bit
- 51:38Speaker 1: of a letdown. India more doing some really screechy acting.
- 51:44Speaker 2: Yeah, she India Moore, I was excited to see in
- 51:49Speaker 2: this film, and the film itself just unfortunately paled in
- 51:52Speaker 2: comparison to the first one. The first one I loved.
- 51:55Speaker 1: The first one's a masterpiece.
- 51:56Speaker 2: I thought it was actually incredible. Well not so much,
- 52:02Speaker 2: but you know, it's important that we have like women
- 52:04Speaker 2: that are leading action franchises, and Taylor Russell is fab
- 52:09Speaker 2: in it. Thinking about that, thinking about Salt, I want
- 52:13Speaker 2: to know, like, what you think the best women led
- 52:18Speaker 2: action movies are not franchises, like like a movie. I mean,
- 52:22Speaker 2: we can count franchises, but not like TV if.
- 52:24Speaker 1: That makes sense, okay, like if well, obviously Buffy the
- 52:28Speaker 1: Vampire Slayer TV.
- 52:30Speaker 2: No, no, no, sorry, We're doing movies.
- 52:32Speaker 1: Movies, Okay, movies, movies. That's the best, Okay, I would say, like,
- 52:37Speaker 1: I'm more into uh oh, Terminator, that's oh women, hold on,
- 52:44Speaker 1: hold on, hold on, vamp vamp.
- 52:46Speaker 2: I'm gonna say, and I'll have to repeat this for Rose,
- 52:48Speaker 2: forgive me virgins that if we're stacking mad Max crouching.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Yes, Sarah Connor, Terminator is female led. Sarah Connor is
- 52:59Speaker 1: the character of the Terminator franchise. Really yeah, okay, I
- 53:05Speaker 1: mean I guess like it's the Terminator, but like it's
- 53:08Speaker 1: really Sarah Connor.
- 53:09Speaker 2: So Terminator Alien.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Atomic Blonde. You don't think that movie ranks Anaconda.
- 53:17Speaker 2: I don't think Anaconda is so good.
- 53:20Speaker 1: But Red Sparrows starring Jennifer Lawrence, a really sickening spy
- 53:25Speaker 1: thriller that not enough people talk about.
- 53:27Speaker 2: I have never seen it. Actually I would love to watch.
- 53:30Speaker 2: I want to say that Atomic Blonde doesn't rank. I'm
- 53:32Speaker 2: also going to say that Anaconda j Loo is not
- 53:34Speaker 2: prominently featured enough and does not rank. I'm gonna say
- 53:37Speaker 2: that Kill Bill oh period. Obviously, I think.
- 53:41Speaker 1: Number one the Pinnacle.
- 53:43Speaker 2: I I'm not sure if I want to throw Hunger
- 53:46Speaker 2: Games in the mix. I honestly think that the fran
- 53:48Speaker 2: that the movie is better than the lead. Sorry, I
- 53:51Speaker 2: hate to say it.
- 53:53Speaker 1: Well, we were just talking last night about how miscast
- 53:56Speaker 1: Jennifer Lawrence was in the X Men films.
- 53:59Speaker 2: Maybe that's our second bonus episode?
- 54:01Speaker 1: Oh x Men?
- 54:03Speaker 2: Yes?
- 54:04Speaker 1: But which homework assignment for the Virgins? X Men ninety
- 54:08Speaker 1: seven just returned on Disney Plus. I will definitely be
- 54:12Speaker 1: talking about it as the second season goes on, because
- 54:14Speaker 1: it's one of my favorite shows on TV it's so good,
- 54:19Speaker 1: fran I think you should catch up on season one
- 54:21Speaker 1: and watch season two. We can. I will totally watch
- 54:27Speaker 1: with you if you want to do that.
- 54:29Speaker 2: And on a second piece of homework for the visions
- 54:32Speaker 2: on this tangent, watch Leviticus, which Rose and I are
- 54:35Speaker 2: going to see you tomorrow. Yes, we will be discussing
- 54:38Speaker 2: the gay horror film that just came out. So wait
- 54:41Speaker 2: back to women led action films. I love Mad Max.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Oh oh, we wait to Hunger Games. I was gonna say,
- 54:50Speaker 2: I think that Jennifer Lawrence works because she's kind of
- 54:56Speaker 2: like just a plinth on which to rest your emotions
- 55:01Speaker 2: and stakes. Like she's kind of nothing and therefore is
- 55:05Speaker 2: perfectly perfectly. Things just happen to her throughout the plot.
- 55:09Speaker 2: She's like pursuing, She's like, I don't know, I just
- 55:11Speaker 2: I don't think you know.
- 55:12Speaker 1: A plinth is a a plinth is a good She's
- 55:14Speaker 1: literally there just to suffer and look pretty doing it,
- 55:18Speaker 1: and she.
- 55:18Speaker 2: Looks amazing, And I believe the stakes because she's a
- 55:21Speaker 2: fabulous actress.
- 55:23Speaker 1: I want to I actually like I feel this. I
- 55:27Speaker 1: feel very on the spot right now. I would love
- 55:29Speaker 1: to return to this question next week. And like, I
- 55:31Speaker 1: want to do some homework on my own and actually
- 55:34Speaker 1: thoughtfully put together a list, and maybe you do the
- 55:37Speaker 1: same and we'll compare notes.
- 55:38Speaker 2: Okay, I will write out a few m and we
- 55:42Speaker 2: will discuss it next week.
- 55:43Speaker 1: And Virgins, if you have suggestions, drop them in the comments.
- 55:48Speaker 1: As we said earlier in the episode, make sure to
- 55:50Speaker 1: go listen to our best Disney Dresses ranking on Patreon.
