- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday.
- 0:15It is the 11th of September and unfortunately this date is kind
- 0:20of marred in our history. 911 is not a happy association.
- 0:24I know someone whose birthday is today and he was just so
- 0:27devastated that his birthday would forever be marred as this
- 0:31day. So I thought, what are some
- 0:33other less unhappy things that have happened on the 11th of
- 0:37September? And way back in 1297, our hero,
- 0:41William Wallace, he won a decisive victory at the Battle
- 0:44of Sterling Bridge, which really kind of pushed momentum toward
- 0:47the Scottish independence movement, which means they
- 0:50ultimately, a number of years later, were able to win their
- 0:53own independence. But that's still a little bit
- 0:55worry. How about Harry Connick junior?
- 0:57Any of you like a little bit of swing?
- 0:59It's his birthday today, Harry. Happy birthday.
- 1:03And if all of that's just a little bit not interesting to
- 1:06you, it's National Make Your Bed Day.
- 1:09So if you've made your bed today, you have achieved
- 1:12something good for the day and set yourself up on the right
- 1:15path. And if you're still in bed, wow,
- 1:17well, you are at a distinct advantage because you can hop
- 1:20up, make your bed, and have participated in something that
- 1:23people all around the world are doing today, making their beds.
- 1:27There you go. It is a day filled with hope and
- 1:30possibility, and we are going to live it today and see what
- 1:34amazing things we can do. And our Bible reading is equally
- 1:38amazing as we continue to read this, this amazing story of
- 1:42God's Spirit just convincing people of the truth of the
- 1:46gospel message and communities being changed, people forming
- 1:52righteous mobs to push back against change.
- 1:54Ah, so much going on. Let's dive in and read the
- 1:57story, shall we? Let's continue reading as we
- 2:00read Acts chapter 18. Then Paul left Athens and went
- 2:14to Corinth. There he became acquainted with
- 2:17a Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had recently arrived
- 2:22from Italy with his wife Priscilla.
- 2:24They had left Italy when Claudius Caesar deported all
- 2:28Jews from Rome. Paul lived and worked with them,
- 2:31for they were tent makers just as he was.
- 2:34Each Sabbath found Paul at the synagogue trying to convince the
- 2:38Jews and Greeks alike. And after Silas and Timothy came
- 2:42down from Macedonia, Paul spent all of his time preaching the
- 2:45word. He testified to the Jews that
- 2:48Jesus was the Messiah and when they opposed and insulted him,
- 2:52Paul shook the dust from his clothes and said, Your blood is
- 2:56upon your own heads. I am innocent.
- 2:59From now on I will go to preach to the Gentiles.
- 3:03Then he left and went to the home of Titus Justice, a Gentile
- 3:07who worshipped God and lived next door to the synagogue.
- 3:11Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, and everyone in his
- 3:13household believed in the Lord. Many others in Corinth also
- 3:17heard Paul became believers and were baptised.
- 3:22One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision and told him don't
- 3:26be afraid, speak out, don't be silent, for I am with you and no
- 3:32one will attack and harm you, for many people in the city
- 3:36belong to me. So Paul stayed there for the
- 3:40next year and a half, teaching the word of God.
- 3:44But when Gallio became governor of Ikaya, some Jews rose up
- 3:48together against Paul and brought him before the governor
- 3:51for judgement. They accused Paul of persuading
- 3:55people to worship God in ways that are contrary to our law.
- 4:00But just as Paul started to make his defence, Gallia turned to
- 4:04Paul's accusers and said, Listen, you Jews, if this were a
- 4:08case involving some wrongdoing or a serious crime, I would have
- 4:12a reason to accept your case. But since it is merely a
- 4:15question of words and names and your Jewish law, take care of it
- 4:20yourselves. I refuse to judge such matters.
- 4:23And he threw them out of the courtroom.
- 4:25The crowd then grabbed Sosthenes, the leader of the
- 4:28synagogue, and beat him right there in the courtroom.
- 4:32But Gallio paid no attention. Paul stayed in Corinth for some
- 4:38time after that, then said goodbye to the brothers and
- 4:41sisters and went to nearby St Crea.
- 4:44There he shaved his head according to Jewish custom,
- 4:47marking the end of a vow. Then he set sail for Syria,
- 4:51taking Priscilla and Aquila with him.
- 4:55They stopped first at the port of Ephesus, where Paul left the
- 4:58others behind. While he was there, he went to
- 5:01the synagogue to reason with the Jews.
- 5:04They asked him to stay longer, but he declined.
- 5:07As he left, however, he said, I will come back later, God
- 5:11willing. Then he set sail from Ephesus.
- 5:14The next stop was at the port of Say, Saria.
- 5:18From there he went up and visited the church at Jerusalem
- 5:21and then went back to Antioch. After spending some time in
- 5:25Antioch, Paul went back through Galatia and Phrygia, visiting
- 5:30and strengthening all the believers.
- 5:34Meanwhile, a Jew named Apollos, an eloquent speaker who knew the
- 5:38Scriptures well, had arrived at Ephesus from Alexandria in
- 5:42Egypt. He had been taught the way of
- 5:44the Lord, and he taught others about Jesus with an enthusiastic
- 5:49spirit and with accuracy. However, he knew only about
- 5:53John's baptism. When Priscilla and Aquila heard
- 5:57him preaching boldly in the synagogue, they took him aside
- 6:01and explained the way of God even more accurately.
- 6:05Apollos had been thinking about going to a Caia, and the
- 6:08brothers and sisters in Ephesus encouraged him to go.
- 6:12They wrote to the believers in Akaiya asking them to welcome
- 6:15him when he arrived there. He proved to be of great benefit
- 6:19to those who, by God's grace, had believed.
- 6:23He refuted the Jews with powerful arguments in public
- 6:27debate. Using the Scriptures, he
- 6:29explained to them that Jesus was the Messiah.
- 6:43Our Jesus, we thank you for the lives that you give us, these
- 6:47rich and wonderful lives where each day we can walk and talk
- 6:53and share and love and be loved. A lot of pray that today as we
- 6:59go about our daily lives, that you inspire us, that you move us
- 7:04into the places where your Kingdom needs to be shared.
- 7:08And that you equip us with an extra measure of Your grace,
- 7:13Your love, Your kindness, your patience so that we can disrupt
- 7:20the selfish ways of this world and that we can share You boldly
- 7:25and accurately like our mate Apollos.
- 7:29And Lord, I pray for our governments and our leaders that
- 7:33you would bless them, that you would mould them, and that you
- 7:37would prompt and guide them in the decisions they make so that
- 7:42your Kingdom can be a reality here.
- 7:45We lift up ourselves, our communities, our leaders and our
- 7:51days into your precious hands. We pray this all in your loving
- 7:56present name, Jesus, Amen.
