- 0:05This is Kevin Sportsforite Daily with the Folks and a high sports show on Academy
- 0:09one of five point nine FM. Unfortunately, after two very chatty guests last
- 0:15week, I've been unsuccessful in finding anyone to talk to this week. Let's
- 0:20face it, people lead very busy lives these days, don't they. However,
- 0:24I've loads of sports and reports to bring you. We've got reports from
- 0:36Folks and in Victor, including the under eighteens Hive Town with a report from
- 0:41Tom ellerby Hawkinstown Folks in in Victor Disability football team, folks at Optimist Hockey
- 0:49Club including a short interview with pitch side with Adrian Rowe after the under fourteen's
- 0:55semi final. We've got reports on the Saints basketball, the Folks and Arrows,
- 1:00wheelchair basketball, running and trail events, schools, ski racing, rugby,
- 1:07netball, and a couple of retro songs from the TV drama The Royal
- 1:14and a tribute song from Steve Harley who recently passed away from cancer. Oh
- 1:25and I nearly forgot It'll soon be half term parents, so a list of
- 1:29half term sports camps for the kids to tell you about. We're going to
- 1:40start the show now with a classic track from Dolly Parton Joelane, followed by
- 1:45some my local music that I apologized local music there from Kate Winty and a
- 2:02song called Weightless and are waiting. Okay, let's crack on now. We've
- 2:07got plenty to get through in the next couple of hours, so we're going
- 2:09to start with the usual football folksing In Victor beat Canvy Island one Neil last
- 2:15Saturday thanks to a Tom Dery headed goal in the sixty third minute. Tuesday
- 2:20evening saw an away game at Chessunt where the score ended with a three to
- 2:23two victory to Chessant after in Victor went ONeill up with a Dave Smith penalty
- 2:28of chessn't hit back with one goal. Then they were awarded two penalties which
- 2:32they converted both of them, so that gave them the victory three two.
- 2:37This puts in Victor in seventeenth place with fourteen points above the drop zone.
- 2:43But listening to Ady and Charlie on Seasider's Radio, it seems once again it
- 2:46was a below power performance from in Victor. Now as we head towards the
- 2:51end of the season, the games will still be coming thick and fast,
- 2:53thanks to all the postponements for all that horrible weather we've had. This Saturday
- 2:58in Victor don't have a game, although there is a full fixture list in
- 3:01the division. They actually have a game on Sunday away at Cray Wanderers.
- 3:05And do you know what I couldn't understand for the life of me why this
- 3:07should be. So I contacted Seasider's radio commentator and former guest of the show,
- 3:13Amy Dawks, and he told me it was because Cray shared a ground
- 3:16with Bromley and they have a home game on the Saturday. So this highlights
- 3:21one of the drawbacks of ground sharing, such as the fixture pile ups.
- 3:25But luckily enough Bromley have an artificial pitch so cancelations are rare. After the
- 3:31Crag game, the next ones are over the Easter period. Good Friday at
- 3:36home to Lewis three o'clock, Easter Monday away to haste Things also three o'clock,
- 3:39where a big crowd is expected. They've got quite a good home support
- 3:44over there at Hastings and the other day they played Chattham I think, and
- 3:49have also got a good support and there was over two thousand people there switching
- 3:54to Hyghetown now and they welcomed three Bridges to reach Fields last Saturday. So
- 4:00let's hear how the game went from our pitch side reporter Tom Elleby. It
- 4:04was a pointer piece on Saturday afternoon at Reachfields as hythe drew one one with
- 4:09three Bridges. Steve Watt made just one change from the four mill defeat against
- 4:13Horndean as Kane Philip was replaced by Kay Grand. The first chance of the
- 4:16match went Hide's Away in the twelfth minute as a long thrown from the right
- 4:19hand side by Jack Stevenson was headed backwards by ex Hyde striker Noel Layton,
- 4:25which keeper Finley Western had to jump to catch. However, it was the
- 4:29Visitors who broke the deadlock on twenty two minutes when the bille Gunnam darted past
- 4:32the Hide the fence and placed a shot into the corner of the net past
- 4:35Jackquest's duty. Hith had an opportunity to level the scores on the half hour
- 4:41mark as Franny Colin whipped a curling shot from outside the box just past the
- 4:44keeper's right hand post. Colin almost turned the provider ten minutes later as his
- 4:48free kick was headed on by Josh Whisson and was narrowly tipped over by Finley
- 4:53Western. Hythe had their closest chance at the half in stoppage time when Jake
- 4:57Hembery shot at goal was saved and the rebatd and went to Whistan once again,
- 5:00who managed to deflect the ball off the crossbar before it was dealt with
- 5:03both the Three Bridges back line. The second half began fairly evenly. Hive
- 5:09did have a slight edge, but their build up play was unfortunately canceled out
- 5:12in the final third. On seventy seven minutes, a melee in the Three
- 5:15Bridges penalty area almost resulted in a goal, but in eighty three minutes,
- 5:18Jackquest's Duty had to dive to catch a bullet header by Billy Irving from a
- 5:23Three Bridges corner. Fortunately for Hive they were able to draw level with just
- 5:27three minutes remaining of normal time when Lex Allen's shot resulted in a handball by
- 5:30an opposition defender. Fanny Colin stepped up and calmly slotted the ball in,
- 5:34so keepers left to make it one to one. Despite this, it was
- 5:39a Visitors who came closest to scoring the winner in stoppage time, noel Leyton
- 5:43hit a shot which was narrowly caught between the legs of Jackquest's duty to secure
- 5:46a point for Hithe. Overall, the result was a fair one, but
- 5:49Hide will go aways slightly disappointed with their performance in the penalty area. Well
- 5:54big thanks to you there, Tom for that report. Now, last Tuesday
- 5:59Hyde made the tree to East Grinstead for a league game where the score was
- 6:01three to two to five thanks to a ninetieth minute winner scored by Troy Howard.
- 6:06Now fixtures, I mean I have a crammed fixture list coming up tonight
- 6:12yesternight Thursday twenty first, it's home to Beckenham Saturday the twenty third they are
- 6:16away to Cray Valley Tuesday, twenty sixth home to Herne Bay Saturday the thirtieth
- 6:21home to Mursdam and Easter Monday are way to Shepherd United. Turning our attentions
- 6:27now to Hawkins Town where they made the trip over to Thunnet last Saturday where
- 6:30they played Minster, who ground share with Ramsgate. The game ended two one
- 6:34win to the Hawks, goals coming from Tyler Clements and Connor Coyne. Their
- 6:39main rivals hals AFC also won beat in Peckhamtown four to one. So the
- 6:44table it just doesn't seem to move, you know, they both keep winning,
- 6:47so the table stays the same. Hauls are on top a game in
- 6:49hand and Hawks are second, two points behind Bury. This Saturday, the
- 6:55Hawks have got a really tough game because they're in second and they welcome Idle
- 6:59Hill to Hawkins and they're in third place now. On Sunday, the Folks
- 7:02in Victor Disability team took part in a tournament in Faversham, entering two teams.
- 7:09The Premiership side drew Neil Neil with kings Hall, they lost two nil
- 7:13to Maidstone, lost one nil to Chatham, then drew Neil Neil with Southeast
- 7:16Goals. Man of the Match for the four games went to Harry Law the
- 7:21Champions. The Championship side drew Neil Neil with both Anchorians and Charlton, then
- 7:27lost one nil three times over to Southeast Goals, Madstone Silver and Maidstone Copper,
- 7:33meaning that both teams never scored a goal, never scored a goal all
- 7:36day. That's really unusual for Garrett's side. But to make matters worse,
- 7:42former guest of the Show, Garrett Wilson now he scuffed a penalty of the
- 7:46post, but fair play to Garrant, who writes the reports himself. He
- 7:50actually included this bit in the rite up and I've got to be honest.
- 7:54If that had been me and I've missed the penalty, I think I would
- 7:57have kept it quiet. But so what does are you? Garrant? The
- 8:00end of the match for the championship side went to Graham dre and good Luck
- 8:03goes to yet another form of guests of the show, Paul Stanton, and
- 8:07he's focused in in Victor Under eighteens. They travel to near Tunbridge Wells to
- 8:13play Rustall in the Kent FA Under eighteen's Boys Cup this Sunday. So there
- 8:18you go, loads and loads of local football going on there and it's good
- 8:20to hear that our former guests are still out there. Okay, coming up
- 8:24next, we've got a classic track, the second classic track of the day,
- 8:28Remember this one George McCrae and Rocky Your Baby nineteen eighty eight. There
- 8:50eurrhythmics, sweet dreams are made of this and what a brilliant voice she's got
- 8:56into Annie Lennox. She made some classic tracks and thinking back going there was
- 9:01one there must be an Angel that one, and love is a Stranger and
- 9:05here comes the rain again. Just you know, awesome stuff from a female
- 9:11artist with such a powerful voice. Okay, let's move on now we do
- 9:16some basketball. So great news from the Saints camp this week. The under
- 9:20sixteen girls won their last game of the season, beat in Norfolk by seventy
- 9:24nine points to thirty four. The under sixteen's Girls National League team finished in
- 9:28second place after scoring one hundred points against Essex Rebels, who managed only thirteen
- 9:35in reply. During the season, they won seventeen games, losing just three.
- 9:39The under twelves beat Kent Panthers, who come from Rochester that they beat
- 9:45Excuse me, they beat them sixty three points to forty. I can't get
- 9:48my words out today. I don't know what it is. I don't know
- 9:50if it's the weather or what. Excuse me for stumbling over all these words
- 9:54today. Turning our attention now to a wheelchair basketball now. The folks Arrows
- 10:00traveled away this Saturday to play Herowood Heat, which is near Cambridge. This
- 10:05means a two hundred and thirty four mile around trip. The league table shows
- 10:09that Arrows are on top, but there are four teams including the Arrows,
- 10:13all on sixteen points after Saturday's game. The Arrows have just two fixtures left,
- 10:18both against Cardiff met Archers, but they are second with a game in
- 10:22hand, making the end of season a run in looking a really really close
- 10:26affair. So good luck to the Arrows and let's hope they can win those
- 10:30two games against Cardiff met Archers. So time for some news about schools skiing.
- 10:37On Monday Evening at the Folks and Ski Center is an evening of school's
- 10:39ski races. Juniors go between five and six thirty and seniors six thirty two
- 10:46eight is open to all primary and secondary school children who are able to ski
- 10:52in control and use the lift. There is one hour for train in followed
- 10:56by the race. It's organized by the National school Snow Sports Association and is
- 11:01growing in popularity all the time. I think this is the third one that
- 11:05they've held down at the Sports Center there. Basically, you're racing down the
- 11:09slope against the accurate timing clock and finishing times are sometimes within just one hundredths
- 11:16of a second apart. So for more information on this one, go to
- 11:20the Facebook page of either the Folks and Sports Center or folks and Ski Race
- 11:26Club and all the details are there coming up. Now, we've got a
- 11:31song from Steve Miller band and this called the Joker. Some people call me
- 11:37Little Space Come Love Elo there from nineteen eighty six there, and I think
- 11:52Jeff Lynne he announced that they're going to do They're going to call it a
- 11:56day. It's the Over and Out Tour, I think they called it.
- 12:01So they're going to be touring, probably going to take you a couple of
- 12:03years. They've got a massive date set up and in America and then I'm
- 12:07hoping they'll come to the UK and they do the rounds there. I saw
- 12:11him a few times actually once certainly I remember, you know, really memorable
- 12:16evening up at the two. It looks like I mean, they started up
- 12:20in the seventies, You've got to remember that, and they produced some awesome
- 12:24music. Okay, let's turn to rugby now now. The folks from first
- 12:28fifteen suffered a heavy forty one points to five de feet away at top of
- 12:33the table seven Oaks, putting them into fourth place with just two games left
- 12:37to play. Those two games are both at home this Saturday to Gillingham and
- 12:41Kourian's then after Easter on Saturday the sixth of April against Sidcup. I couldn't
- 12:46find a result for the Seconds, but their final game of the season is
- 12:50also on the sixth of April away to Ash. The Seconds are also currently
- 12:54in fourth place. No result for the Thirds to tell you about, and
- 12:58their last two fixture are Saturday thirteenth of April away to Faversham Castaways and twenty
- 13:05seventh of April at home to Whitstable. The Thirds are currently ninth out of
- 13:09ten. Well did you watch the Six Nations? Once again it didn't fail
- 13:13for excitement. The biggest shock of the tournaments saw Italy beat Wales by twenty
- 13:18four points to twenty one, Wales ending up bottom of the table, winning
- 13:22only the Wood and Spoon champions. Ireland beat Scotland by seventeen points to thirteen,
- 13:28and the very last game of the series saw France beat England by thirty
- 13:33three points to thirty one. So final placings saw Sorry Ireland on top,
- 13:39then France, England, Scotland, Italy and Wales. Now it's got to
- 13:43be said, if you were an armchair spectator on Saturday and watched all three
- 13:48games, you certainly had an entertaining day. I mean the modern game of
- 13:52rugby now at the highest level. I had the speed, pace, the
- 13:56fitness, the discipline they just don't oh give with a referee today, and
- 14:01the competitiveness and they just really are there all to be admired. Time for
- 14:07some music now, now, this one's from Dan Hartman and it's called Instant
- 14:11Replay. Dan Hartman their Instant Replayers definite floor filler. You know when you're
- 14:39at that wedding reception, you've got your best suit on and the you spilt
- 14:41drink all down front and this song comes on and you do a bit of
- 14:45Dad's dancing. What a great track that was. Okay, so it's time
- 14:50for me to stay with kind of a retro theme. It's we're going to
- 14:54play one or two songs now from one of the TV dramas that I've been
- 14:58watching on We used to call it taping back in the day, but now
- 15:01it's recording. Well, I've been watching the sixties TV drama The Royal.
- 15:05Now tell you this little story about a girl of about six years old who
- 15:09was admitted to the Royal after being diagnosed with whooping cough, which you don't
- 15:15really hear about that much anymore, do you now? Whilst they were diagnosing
- 15:18and waiting for a vaccine, it looked like an epidemic might be on its
- 15:22way. Now. The song that was being played while they were thinking about
- 15:26this, trying to get this epidemic sorted out, was this one. It's
- 15:28Thunderclap Newman, something in the air Underclap Newman there in nineteen sixty nine.
- 15:54That was what a powerful song that was back in the day. Now,
- 15:58starting with the Royal All, the TV drama set in the sixties, on
- 16:02a lighter note. In the show, now, there was a doctor trying
- 16:04to do a good deed. He was trying to help a lady by popping
- 16:07to a flat to give us some medicine. That was certain. It's like
- 16:11her prescription, you know. Now. The janitor gave the doctor a key
- 16:15as she didn't answer and he was getting a bit worried. He finally entered
- 16:19the flat and found a huge dog in the bedroom who pinned him in the
- 16:22corner and wouldn't let him move. In the meantime, the lady in question,
- 16:27she went down the hospital herself and picked up her own prescription. She
- 16:30was right as rain. But the poor old doctor he had to wait hours
- 16:34for the lady to return to call off the dog. Anyway, whilst the
- 16:37dog was trying to get into the flat, sorry what the doctor was trying
- 16:42to get into the flat, they were playing this song and it's the Zombies
- 16:47and so ironic that she's not there. Well, no one telling me from
- 17:04nineteen sixty four the Zombies and she's not there. And it was just a
- 17:07couple of songs from the TV drama The Royal. It's amazing that I've got
- 17:12millions of films on Netflix and I just love watching Heartbeat and The Royal.
- 17:18Well, it's been a sad week in the music industry as another singer has
- 17:22passed away. Steve Harley was the frontman and lead singer for his group Coutney
- 17:26Rebel. He had a long career in the music business, but unfortunately he
- 17:30lost his battle to cancer this week. He'll always be remembered for two,
- 17:34possibly three songs. I think one of the songs that lesser known song,
- 17:41but it will you haven't heard it for a long time. I might try
- 17:42and dig it out. In the second half the show was a song called
- 17:45mister Soft Remember he went Miss Deserved and another sort of quirky song that caught
- 17:52the imagination back in the day was due d teen. Did you remember that
- 17:56one? Well, but it's most popular song. You just can't help but
- 18:02sing along to this one the way he drags his words. Rest in peace,
- 18:06Steve Harley as we play, come up and see me, make me
- 18:08smile. You've done it all. You've got your every through Steve Harley and
- 18:29Cockney River. There Sadly, Steve Harley passed away this week. Okay,
- 18:36Now coming up in the second half of the show. That's right, We've
- 18:40got some news on the Folks and Optimists seniors and a special report on the
- 18:45under fourteen's boys team. We've got some running news. We got some news
- 18:49about some sports camps parents. Pinuri is back on that one, and we've
- 18:52got some netball news. So don't go away because I've got this is this
- 18:57track we're going to play now. One of is the right thing? Is
- 19:00it Summer? It's called the Boys of Summer, Don Henley. It's a
- 19:03great track. But are we ever going to see the sunshine? You just
- 19:07don't know. I'll see you after the news. One oh five point nine
- 19:11Academy FM, The Folkston and Hide Squads podcast every local sport across the district.
- 19:41This is Kevin Day the Sports for Folks don't bring you the second hour
- 19:45of the Sports show. I'm so sorry we've got no guesting today. They're
- 19:55all a busy bunch out there. But when you think back, you know,
- 19:57I haven't done too bad. We've covered my sports. We did our
- 20:00ator z. There's still a few letters missing. I've got to chase up.
- 20:03I haven't forgotten. But yeah, it's a tough time to get guests
- 20:08in, especially you're in It's the middle of the week and people are working.
- 20:11But coming up on the show this hour, I've got the reusual report
- 20:15on the Folks and the Optimists as we run through all the teams, and
- 20:19we've got a special report. Last Sunday I went up to Three Hills to
- 20:23watch the under fourteens in a semi final of a National Cup, so we'd
- 20:29be recapping what happened there. We've got some running news, some trail running.
- 20:33In fact, we've got news about some sports camps. And as I'm
- 20:38reading this report out, I've realized how many times I've said former guests of
- 20:44the show. So I'm going to be doing a little roll of honor and
- 20:47telling you what they've been up to. So plenty going on. Don't go
- 20:52away if you haven't made it, if you haven't treated yourself to a cup
- 20:56of tea yet. And now's the time to put the ket along because we
- 21:00got the clash coming up and the local music by Alex Parker. Get that
- 21:07kettalong, local music Alex Parker and a song called eight Lines. Okay,
- 21:34let's crack on with a second hour, and we're going to start with hockey.
- 21:37The senior hockey scene. Well, it was an action pack weekend for
- 21:42the Folks and Optimist with thirteen, yes, thirteen senior games being played.
- 21:48Now, I just made a little bit of arithmetic there, and it's amazing
- 21:52that thirteen eleven in the team, two hundred and forty three players played hockey
- 21:56for the Folks and Optimists on Saturday. And that's before you start naming subs
- 22:03and trainers and you know, spectators for two hundred and forty three players is
- 22:08awesome. Now, the men's fielded eight teams and the ladies five, and
- 22:12of course there was the big Under fourteen semi final on Sunday, So I'm
- 22:15going to tell you about that a bit later. In the show. So
- 22:18here comes the stats. As we said, they played thirteen, they won
- 22:22seven, they lost four, they drew two. The goals scored four was
- 22:27thirty three and goals against was twenty. The men's first eleven beat Canterbury four
- 22:33to three, goals coming from Josh Clifford who's scored a hat trick and one
- 22:37from Harvey Little. The Seconds beat seven Oaks three and Neil thanks to goals
- 22:41from Lorcan Doyle, James Crooxton and Hugo Ferno, which means the Seconds now
- 22:45they sit six points clear at the top of the table and a win next
- 22:48week could confirm them as league winners. The third beat Mardern Russet's three to
- 22:53one thanks to Freddie Brown, Nick Ward and another former guest of the show,
- 22:59Sam Island epop tup scoring a goal for the Thirds. Sam Island was
- 23:02our cricket guest back in the summer there at the end of the summer.
- 23:06The fourth beat Hulcombe five to one, goals from Archie Richardson who scored twice,
- 23:11and one each from Joe Thresher, Jack Dixon and Alfie Ball. The
- 23:15fifteen beat BB eight C four to two. The sixteen beat Canterbury three to
- 23:19two. The seventh team lost one nil to some Valance, and the eighth
- 23:23team lost five to four to gore Court. Now it's the turn of the
- 23:27ladies. The first eleven beat Eastbourne four to one thanks to Claire Carter,
- 23:33Nicki Ball, Steph Mill and Maddie Timmins. The Seconds lost to Tunbridge Wells
- 23:37by three goals to two, but last week's Gets to the Show did manage
- 23:41to score. Well done to Adrian Rose. She got a goal, the
- 23:45other one coming from Hannah Jones. The Thirds lost one nil to Bromley and
- 23:48Beckenham. But another form of guests of the show she played in golf for
- 23:52thirteen as Amy Bumstead. Now for a team that loses one nil and the
- 23:57goalkeep, the goal gets player of the match, So we'll down to you
- 24:02Amy. The fourth team drew Neil neil with Ashford and the fifth team drew
- 24:06one. All we've sitting born thanks to a Becca Share goal. Well,
- 24:10we're going to play a bit of music now, but we will be back
- 24:14after the music with a special report on the Under fourteens semi final game against
- 24:18Winchester ABC. There all of My Heart from nineteen eighty two. That's quite
- 24:33modern for me. Actually, it's quite a jump up the catlendar. Now
- 24:38there is a bit of an overload of music this week because I couldn't pin
- 24:42any guests down to come in the show. And it's just the way it
- 24:45goes, you know, you get a run of people, they're busy and
- 24:48they can't make it, and all of a sudden you've got a waiting list.
- 24:52So we're going to move on now to hockey. This is a really
- 24:56really special report and last Sunday the folks are not Tomis under fourteen's boys played
- 25:00Winchester in the semi final of a National Cup. What we're going to do,
- 25:04first of all, we're going to cast their mind back one week when
- 25:07their coach Adrien Row came into the studio and chatted about her team. Okay,
- 25:14we're back in a studio now and we join once again by Adrian and
- 25:17Adrian. There's a massive, massive game coming up on Sunday at three Hills,
- 25:22tell us about it. There is. So when we enter into the
- 25:26League and Cup with England Hockey, you enter into a tier. The lads
- 25:32are in Tier two and Tier four and we also enter into a National Cup
- 25:37competition so the competition starts locally, you play against you know, local size.
- 25:41We played Cansbury and Noel Park and as you go further along in the
- 25:45in the competition, you go a bit further Afield, Winchester, Surry,
- 25:49Wimbledon we've been to. Yeah. So we are in the semi finals,
- 25:55semi finals and you've got a lovely, lovely homes drawer as well, haven't
- 25:59you very lucky homes quarter final and semi Yeah, because last week on the
- 26:03program, I think it was that I looked at a Google map out and
- 26:07found out where the other teams were and the furvice that you might have had
- 26:11to travel was Manchester, wasn't it It was? Yeah, that'd have been
- 26:14a bigger way game. Yeah. Yeah, I mean it would have been
- 26:15a great experience for the boys. But I mean from an administration point for
- 26:19Three Hills and that it's it's nice to be on home territory is obviously an
- 26:23advantage. Now have the boys been training this week? They have, We
- 26:29train every Monday. We've really been putting a focus on the Cup games without
- 26:33putting on too much pressure. Lots of gameplay in training. We're so fortunate
- 26:38to have lots of people that have got expert knowledge that have come down to
- 26:42help us out. We've got hockey playing parents who have played, you know,
- 26:45very high standard of hockey. We've got old club members that play I
- 26:49played National league, all been helping us out. So it's fantastic. Yeah,
- 26:52and I bet it's really put I don't know, it's almost put the
- 26:56club back on the map, really, hasn't it It has? Yeah?
- 26:59Yeah, it's she in hockey circles folks and always feels a little bit on
- 27:02the edge, I think because we're surrounded by the sea and never sort of
- 27:04seen as one of the big clubs. But it's really great to put our
- 27:07name out there in the national competition. Oh brilliant. Yeah. So I
- 27:11noticed I don't know much about hockey, but I noticed that some of your
- 27:15players that were playing that Sunday they looked like they've had a bit more experience.
- 27:21And I talking to Brian, he said, I it was a couple
- 27:23of those played in the seventheen with us yesterday. So that must make a
- 27:29big difference, wasn't it. It definitely does. So when the lads turn
- 27:33thirteen, they're able to play in adult hockey. So the ones that are
- 27:37in the older age group of the under fourteens this year have been exposed at
- 27:40adult hockey. It makes such a huge difference, really changes the way they
- 27:44play their game. Yeah. Yeah, because Brian was telling me that the
- 27:48day before the quarters, the goalie, your goalie, who didn't have much
- 27:52to do really on the Sunday, he was flying about all over the place
- 27:55on the setid he was. I believe he got that game. Yeah,
- 27:57absolutely, that's that's really good. And I could say from being, if
- 28:03you like, uneducated hockey spectator, that some of them definitely had a bit
- 28:07of an older hockey head on them, don't they. Yeah, right there
- 28:11the opposition. I don't suppose you know much about them apart from going on
- 28:15their website and having a little look. Yeah, I suppose. That's a
- 28:18good thing about these national competitions is that you actually don't know, but it's
- 28:22all very unknown. I think they're a similar size club to ours, their
- 28:26lads playing a league the same you know, similar to what you know,
- 28:30similar to us. It will just be what comes up on the day.
- 28:33Yeah, that's right, And no doubt is they've got the same structure,
- 28:34which I think they have. They've got four ladies teams and seven men's teams,
- 28:38no doubt some of their juniors that have got senior heads on as well.
- 28:42Yeah, okay, so I don't want you to name anybody, but
- 28:48do you think you've got any like budding players coming through in your team?
- 28:52Yeah? They really do play exceptionally well as a squad or fifteen, but
- 28:56there are I think at this age it's hard to tell because of them developing
- 29:00at different times. You know who is going to become a star. But
- 29:03yeah, there are absolutely some, you know, excellent hockey players in there.
- 29:07Yeah. And do you find if you've got a pick eleven, is
- 29:12it on a bit of a round robbin system or you do kick off with
- 29:15your eleven best players? So in the league we do a bit of round
- 29:19robin, you know, depending on the game circumstance, depending who we're playing
- 29:22against in the cup, particularly these last three or four games, we start
- 29:26with our best eleven. Yeah, yeah, okay, and the and the
- 29:30subs if you like, except that if it's a very close game and a
- 29:33very tight game, they might not get on. They do. I've not
- 29:37known maturity from lads that are just thirteen like it, you know, they
- 29:41completely understand they're all about the squad and the team and you know, the
- 29:45result the process, rather than themselves. It's fantastic. Yeah, that's great
- 29:49sort of gamemanship discipline anyway, isn't It should be like that in any sports,
- 29:53And at thirteen that's a very mature way to look at sports. I
- 29:57think it's not about me, it's about the team. Yeah, And do
- 30:00you think it's really sunk in thirteen fourteen year olds? You know, you
- 30:04know it might go whatever, But has it really sunk in that they're in
- 30:08a semi final? I think they recognize that it's a pretty big deal.
- 30:12They are the most cool, calm and collected group of lads. They keep
- 30:15me call calm and collected, and so I think they understand, you know,
- 30:19that's probably the biggest game they've played in. But also they're ready.
- 30:22Yeah. Well, okay, now you're the coach, but behind the scenes,
- 30:26so to speak, there must be lots of people helping you out.
- 30:30So I know there's probably too many to mention, and you don't want to
- 30:33leave anybody out, But tell me what goes into what else do you need
- 30:37to run an under fourteen side apart from a coach? Yes, I mean
- 30:41so many people. Really, all I'm doing is keeping the cogs turning.
- 30:45But the parents are so dedicated to take their you know, lads to all
- 30:48parts of the country to play hockey. We couldn't do it without them.
- 30:52We have lots of different coaches. We have a really good junior leader program
- 30:57within Optimists where the older juniors come down and help coach. The lads really
- 31:03respond well to that because it's a peer almost rather than a coach, you
- 31:07know, umpires that give up their time, you know, for nothing.
- 31:11And like I said, we've got seven players in the squad who have got
- 31:15hockey parents and it's great to have their expertise. I did notice that over
- 31:18the years, and I've been reading out these results, some of the names
- 31:22that do come around again you think it must be as dead. But before
- 31:27we wind up, is there anything else you want to say or any thank
- 31:30you God? It's always a tough one, this one, but now's your
- 31:34chance to mention anybody that you really really want to, anyone that's helped you.
- 31:41Yeah, I mean, I'd like to thank the lads really, because
- 31:42they've made it an absolute privilege. It's not a difficult job because they do
- 31:48such a good job. They're such a dedicated, committed group of lads and
- 31:51they make it thoroughly enjoyable. So so the credit goes to them. Down
- 31:53before we go, last little thing, tell us when and where the game
- 31:56is and where people have got to be there on on, hopefully for an
- 32:00early goal. So the game is this Sunday at Three Hills and it pushed
- 32:05back as a midday, right brilliant. Adrianne, thank you so much for
- 32:07coming in. I am determined to be down there. I'm really really looking
- 32:10forward to this one, and so I want to wish you and all the
- 32:14underfourties all the best, and I hope that lots of hockey people are out
- 32:20there listening to this and you just get along there. If you've never watched
- 32:23hockey before, just go down. You've never been to the three years before,
- 32:27just go down. Have a look. This is on our doorstep.
- 32:30It's a national competition. So Adrianne, thank you so much, thank you.
- 32:32Well, there you go. That was Adrianne last week and I really
- 32:36wanted to put in a little bit of that interview just to kind of set
- 32:38the scene before we went to the match on Sunday, and I did actually
- 32:43get down there. I did manage to get down there, and I was
- 32:45just literally a small part of the crowd. There was a huge crowd down
- 32:49there. So this report was put on the Optimist website and I kind of
- 32:54added a few little bits myself here, but this is how it went.
- 32:59Excuse me. Early goals from Harry Row that's Adrian's son, and Will Ball
- 33:04in the first half gave the oppos a good start, but they had to
- 33:07withstand a lot of pressure from the Winchester side. Winchester won a penalty stroke
- 33:12on the very last action of the half, making it two to one,
- 33:15setting it up for an intrigue in second half, and that was where the
- 33:17game really could have swung either way. You know. The boys went in
- 33:22two to one, paying right on halftime and it could have been a bit
- 33:24depressing. So at the time I thought, which way is this going to
- 33:29go? Because they did have a good few players in that Winchester side.
- 33:32In the second half, the Ops started slowly after the break, but a
- 33:36well worked short corner routine saw Jude file file one past the keeper, making
- 33:40it three to one and kind of relieving the tension a little bit. Harry
- 33:44Row made it for to one after rounding the keeper and slotting the ball between
- 33:47two defenders. To be fair, the Winchester well, they certainly didn't give
- 33:52up and push forward, but Freddie Lowe, Joseph Allen, Arthur Ireland,
- 33:57oscar Daily and Finletley were having none of it and their ground to keep the
- 34:00opposition at bay. With Jasper Carroll working tirelessly in midfield. The game was
- 34:06put beyond doubt when Theo Coombs picked up a loose clearance flicked the ball to
- 34:09Jude File who then fit it to a wheel ball to score a second and
- 34:14put the game beyond Winchester's reach. The final score was five to one.
- 34:19Now the final is against Wallingford, which is just south of Oxford, but
- 34:22a neutral venue has yet to be confirmed. The date for the game has
- 34:27been confirmed the twenty eighth of April, and everybody at the club is hoping
- 34:30that as the two teams are ones in Oxford, ones in Folkston, that
- 34:34they will find somewhere yeah, you know, a really really good venue sort
- 34:40of somewhere in between. And after the game it was also exciting the crowd
- 34:45really really clapping. None of them, none of them went off. They
- 34:47all wanted to just you know, cheer the lads. The lads did a
- 34:52little lap of honor thank in the crowd. But then I went over to
- 34:54Adrianne and she's still a really excited, as they all were, and so
- 34:59I up with the pitch side and we had a little check. Prian.
- 35:05You're either coach of a team made a national final. How does that feel?
- 35:08Yeah, it's so exciting. The boys did absolutely phenomenally well and I'm
- 35:13really proud of them. It's brilliant. Now the scoreline says five to one.
- 35:15But to be fair, they were a good side, weren't they.
- 35:17They were. The first half was really even, actually the most pressure we've
- 35:21come up against. Yeah, two one at halftime, I believe. But
- 35:23we really stepped up in the second half. Yeah. I mean every time
- 35:27that Winchester made an attack, your defense stood started, didn't they They absolutely
- 35:31did. Yeah, picked everything up, they came through and I thought,
- 35:34I mean they worked tirelessly really and the midfield really did keep the ball from
- 35:37getting back there. Yes, I think in the last sort of ten minutes
- 35:40they kind of grew in confidence. Their game was open, the passing was
- 35:45more accurate, and you know, we were just waiting for a spectacular goal.
- 35:49Was It definitely was much more like how they play hockey normally. Yeah,
- 35:52really had a lot of gave us a bit too much space, I
- 35:53would say, yeah, yeah, okay, but I mean a fair play
- 35:57to the opposition. They had some good, good players, didn't they did.
- 36:00But your lads come into their own. They kind of rose to the
- 36:04occasion as the game went on, didn't they They did, They did.
- 36:06They started. I'd say we started slightly slower this week, but they definitely
- 36:08picked up as the game went through. Okay, so all we've got to
- 36:13do now is wait to see you got in the final and where it is.
- 36:15Yes, no details yet, but we do know. The date is
- 36:17the twenty eighth of April. Brilliant Adrian. Thank you so much. It's
- 36:21been a wonderful journey, but it's not over yet. It's staying good luck
- 36:23to you and I really really hope I can get up to the final.
- 36:27Thank you, thanks so much. So there that was me chatting to Adrian
- 36:30and immediately after the whistle had gone. So she's a little bit excited and
- 36:35speaking very fast, and I don't blame her, you know, she still
- 36:38being the coach. She was still like picking up bits of kit and Juni
- 36:42boys up and making sure everything was neat and tidy. She was the last
- 36:45one off the pitch, but the crowd stayed there to give her, you
- 36:47know, just a wonderful round of applause. It really was good. So,
- 36:52as we said before, the final was on the twenty eighth of April.
- 36:54Now, there was talk about the game being going to Nottingham, which
- 36:58is kind of a center of excellence for hockey in the Midlands, but hopefully
- 37:01that won't happen. I do believe reading has been mentioned, so we've just
- 37:07got to wait and see. Okay, so I'm really really out of breath
- 37:10now. There was such an exciting weekend, so so time for a bit
- 37:15of music now, and we're gonna listen to Joan Arma trading and a bit
- 37:19of love and affection. I am not in love, but I'm open to
- 37:29the susion Joan Armor trading Love and affection. Now. In the first half
- 37:45of the show, I was just doing a little tribute to Steve Harley and
- 37:51Cockney Rebel and the big hit was come up and see Me Make Me Smile,
- 37:55and they had a couple of hits and I was trying to sing them
- 37:58to you Dan down the microphone, which probably didn't go down too well.
- 38:02But I've tracked one down and I'll bet you haven't nerd this for a very
- 38:07long time. This is another quirky song that he made and it's called Judy
- 38:10teen. Judy is the clean up from the early eighties. There Human leg
- 38:45Don't you want Me times for Running News Now. Eleven South Kent Harriers took
- 38:51part in the Canterbury Riverside ten k on Sunday, two of them finishing in
- 38:54the top ten. Another form of the guests of the show, Darrens Grifvens,
- 38:59was first home for the club in fourth place first Mail Vett fifty in
- 39:02a time of thirty eight minutes fifty eight seconds, and just one place behind
- 39:07him was Max Hamilton Andrews in thirty nine a minutes nine seconds. That's right.
- 39:14The other Harriers included Margaret Connolly fifty four fifteen, Jenny Spillane recording the
- 39:19same time, Michelle Barnes fifty four to fifty six, Rachel Sucklin one hour,
- 39:23four minutes fifteen seconds, Louis Pasco one hour, ten minutes fifty eight
- 39:28seconds, Liz Shilling one hour sixteen minutes twelve seconds, Kirsty Miller one hour
- 39:34seventeen thirty four, Rebecca Edwards one twenty one forty two and Barbara Hunt won
- 39:38twenty one fifty. Meanwhile, a run with a difference was the Western Heights
- 39:44Trail Race organized by the hell Fire Trail Events that has a bit fiery,
- 39:49isn't it now, that was started at the five in Low Barn in Dover.
- 39:53The course went up and around the cliffs, even running up and down
- 39:57the steps of the Grand Shaft and visiting history eric sites of the Citadel and
- 40:00the Grand Redoubt. Mark Savill, when his first race in the Harriers Colours,
- 40:06despite a couple of falls in treacherous conditions, finished in two hours forty
- 40:09eight minutes. Four athletes from the Folkston Club took part. The Nail Stockel
- 40:15finished second overall in two hours twenty three to twenty five, then Neil Adams
- 40:20three hours, seven minutes twenty four, Sylvia took Ask three hours, ten
- 40:23minutes and five seconds, and Phil Moore three hours twenty two thirty four.
- 40:30Now the course was billed as a in brackets half marathon, but a trail
- 40:34race is really tough one to measure with the terrain, and even the organizers
- 40:38on their website gave it as fourteen point four miles seventy seven percent off road
- 40:45with an ascent of one thy eight hundred and sixty feet. So that's one
- 40:49pretty tough race. I mean, we've had loads and loads of rain,
- 40:52and what I saw of the trails that they had to run on, they
- 40:53were absolutely just mud splattered their treacherous. So well done to all who took
- 41:00part. Okay, we're gonna have what a bit of queen. Everyone likes
- 41:04a bit of queen and a bit of killer Queen. She keeps some more
- 41:07shander in a pretty cabinet, Jeeves, she said, just live Maria nineteen
- 41:22seventy four, Killer Queen. Now it's nearly half term, which means holiday
- 41:27sports camps for kids. Four camps bring to mind, so please check out
- 41:30their Facebook pages. I'll probably try and tell you a bit more about them
- 41:36in a bit near the time, but please look out for Next Generation Sports
- 41:39Camps, Elite Community Coaching, UK, Folks and Sports Center Trust and the
- 41:45Three Hills Sports Park, all offering activities for kids starting on or around the
- 41:50first of April. And also keep an eye out for Half Yes half that's
- 41:54h af now. Half is the initiative that Manster United mind RCUs Rashford footballer.
- 42:00He really pushed it over COVID that time. There. It stands for
- 42:05holiday activities and food where the children may be eligible for free meals, So
- 42:09look out for half now. Interestingly enough, in today's sports report, I've
- 42:15noticed the names of seven people that have been mentioned. They're all former guests
- 42:19of the show and it's nice to know that they're all still out there active
- 42:22in their own right. We mentioned Paul Stanton, the manager of the Folks
- 42:25and in Victor Under eighteens as he takes his team to a semi final.
- 42:30Cricketer to Sam Island also turned his hand to play hockey for the Ops and
- 42:34popped in a goal on Saturday. Amy Bumpstead former guests of the show.
- 42:37Now she plays in goal for the third team and whilst they lost one meal,
- 42:43she was voted player of the match. So what don Amy and Els,
- 42:46We've got Darren Scrivens from South Kent Harri has won his age group for
- 42:51a ten k. Last week's guest, Adrian Rowe, is not only the
- 42:54coach of the under fourteens, but she also scored a goal for the Ladies
- 42:59Hockey's second team, player manager of the Folks In Victor Disability team, where
- 43:04we won't mention that penalty, but Garret Wilson is still out there doing his
- 43:07stuff and Seasider's radio commentator who travels up and down the country ad Dawks as
- 43:13he follows folks in in Victor. So it just goes to show how active
- 43:16are the guests that come on this show, how they're still you know,
- 43:20they come on the show and they pass the stories on to you. Now
- 43:23you know, the meaning of this really is that if you know somebody out
- 43:27there that's really passionate about their sport, the local sport, their local club,
- 43:30been doing it for a long time, need a bit of recognition,
- 43:32then please please please get in touch. From the sixties there, big girls
- 43:49don't cry And if you get a chance, anyone says to you, do
- 43:52you want to come and see the Jersey Boys, go and see them.
- 43:55Okay, So we're getting to the end of the show now, So I've
- 43:58just got a cram in this last year bit and it's netball. I've got
- 44:01four Ladies Netball results in from last night. Thank you to Hannah Palmer.
- 44:06Now this was I had to ask her what they were all about. She
- 44:09calls them versatility games. Now, versatility games are where every quarter names are
- 44:15pulled out of the hat and players start playing out position. What a great
- 44:17idea? Really shovels it around a bit. Now, after the team's the
- 44:22results from last night, I will mention the score and a lady's name.
- 44:27This is the lady who had an outstanding game, and you'll soon see what
- 44:30I mean. Tiger's twenty five, Lola Vipus fifty two, jess Ice thirty,
- 44:37Page Scorpions thirty four, Matilda Black Widows seventeen, Amanda Woodpeckers forty,
- 44:47Maddie Jets sixty two, Mazie and the poor old new team, the Rough
- 44:52Diamonds. They only scored eight. I think all their strikers not strikers,
- 44:57well they call them goal shooters playing at the back anyway. The player of
- 45:01their game was Natasha. We done to you, Natasha, and big thank
- 45:05you to Hannah for that information. Well that's it from me. Now.
- 45:08On Sunday I shall be taking a trip to watch the Hastings Half Marathon.
- 45:12I shan't be working it, I sha'n't be on the mic. I'll be
- 45:15just watching and catching up with some of my running friends. Then me and
- 45:17Missus Ferrett will be following the coastline into Eastbourne for a few days, hoping
- 45:22the weather will stay fine so we can do a couple of walks over the
- 45:25picturesque Sussex Downs. I shall be back and around on Good Friday, where
- 45:30I will be on the MIC at the Folkston ten and I hope to catch
- 45:32up with former London Marathon winner Mike Granton, who was the very first winner
- 45:37of the Folkston ten when it started forty years ago. Yes, it's the
- 45:42fortieth anniversary and runners, I'm very sad to say that I've got to tell
- 45:46you that it is sold out. So anyway, stay sporty everybody, and
- 45:51I'll be back and catch up with you in a couple of weeks time.
- 46:00People of the the public,
