• 1:56
Speaker 1: Let's have a conversation about dinner tonight, going to the in-laws' house or something like that.
• 1:59
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, stop working, yeah, Stop working.
• 2:00
Speaker 1: Yeah Well, thanks for joining us, and so let's just get right to it and talk about the top 10 best used cars.
• 2:07
Speaker 1: So my question, right out of the box, to you is what is the profile, the data that you have in place to come up with this top 10?
• 2:17
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's a great question.
• 2:18
Speaker 3: This is the first time we've ever done this, so we're kind of historically known for doing this with new cars, right?
• 2:24
Speaker 3: New car top 10 picks list every year.
• 2:32
Speaker 3: Um, and you know, it's interesting because we saw that doing our own research, that there was about 40 percent of americans that were looking to buy a car in the next year were considering used cars only, so they weren't even looking at new cars, which is pretty staggering.
• 2:42
Speaker 3: So it was really an opportunity in the right time we thought to really expand what we do to, you know, use cars as well.
• 2:48
Speaker 3: And so, when it comes to this list, really it's three big things.
• 2:52
Speaker 3: These cars have to have performed well in our road tests when they were new Maybe not the best performing car, but they had to perform, you know, above a certain bar.
• 3:00
Speaker 3: They have to be safe, and so that means they all have standard electronic stability control, which we know became, you know, mandatory in 2012.
• 3:10
Speaker 3: But a lot of cars had it sooner, right, so that has to be standard.
• 3:13
Speaker 3: And then the last thing is reliability.
• 3:15
Speaker 3: Reliability is probably the most important thing.
• 3:19
Speaker 3: We talked to consumers and we know that when they're shopping for totally agree, totally agree, especially used right.
• 3:24
Speaker 3: You're trying to save money.
• 3:25
Speaker 3: If you buy something reliable, it's going to help you do that, not only because it's going to cost less to own and break down less, but it's also going to be less of a hassle.
• 3:32
Speaker 3: So just that car has to have consistent reliability throughout its model year so is there an age limit in these cars?
• 3:40
Speaker 3: uh, yeah, I mean, about 10 years old is is where we kept it too.
• 3:43
Speaker 3: Um, but it's really about the way they're categorized is by vehicle types.
• 3:48
Speaker 3: So we have SUVs and sports cars and sedans, that type of thing, and then also price brackets.
• 3:54
Speaker 3: So when we look at the average price of a used car, it's still $30,000 is what people are paying on average, which is still a lot of money.
• 4:01
Speaker 3: Wow, yeah, pretty crazy.
• 4:03
Speaker 3: I mean, that's on average is still a lot of money.
• 4:04
Speaker 3: Wow, yeah, pretty crazy.
• 4:05
  Speaker 3: I mean that's that's on average.
• 4:06
Speaker 3: Right, you're considering a lot of cars with that number, but we wanted to show that you can get a safe, reliable used car even lower.
• 4:11
Speaker 3: So our first you know category, and the one that kind of surprised me the most honestly, is our under 10 000 category.
• 4:17
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, the 2017 chevrolet cruze in there.
• 4:20
Speaker 3: Um, you know, not necessarily a top pick when it was new, but now that car's depreciated pretty nicely, it's still reliable.
• 4:28
Speaker 3: Uh, over time, according to our our data that we get back from our members and you know, it's a pretty new car, right, 2017, relatively speaking, that's, yeah, that's a lot of car for under ten thousand dollars.
• 4:38
Speaker 1: So that's kind of the methodology of the list you're not going to find one on the drag strip, but I get where you're coming from right and the question I have is how many of those that you've categorized that they make anymore and you know, are parts still available?
• 4:51
Speaker 2: I'm sure there are, but do they make them at all?
• 4:54
Speaker 3: yeah, I mean that's, that's one of the older vehicles on the list and um, yeah, and we, we really had to do our due diligence to make sure that you could actually find these vehicles too, right, because the way the pricing is done is it's the median price of the car.
• 5:09
Speaker 3: So, yes, you'll find some 2017 or 2018 Cruzes that are above that price, below that price, but we needed to make sure that there are actually some listings out there that you can go find and buy at this price.
• 5:20
Speaker 1: And those folks that don't know this a mid or a small four-door sedan, right correct.
• 5:27
Speaker 3: Yes, yes, it is yep, yep go ahead.
• 5:31
Speaker 4: When you look at these things and you're considering the price, do you look at the mileage on them or you just take.
• 5:37
Speaker 4: You know, these the vehicles we're looking at, and this is the mileage.
• 5:40
Speaker 3: Just is what it is yeah, I mean, mileage is important.
• 5:43
Speaker 3: I mean we don't necessarily have a threshold that okay.
• 5:47
Speaker 3: You have to be able to find a car that's under 50,000 miles, for example, to make it on the list.
• 5:52
Speaker 3: Now, yes, this cruise example, right, being under $10,000 and being a 2017 is probably going to have higher miles.
• 6:00
Speaker 3: I know, when I did my own search in preparation for all this, I was finding some you know 75,000 miles, some over 100 for sure.
• 6:07
Speaker 3: So I think that really speaks to the fact that you really have to look at the ownership history of the car.
• 6:14
Speaker 3: You have to check that car fax, make sure that it, see if it was a rental, see if it was maintained properly, all that type of stuff.
• 6:20
Speaker 3: Right, because buying a used car is just a different experience than buying a new car.
• 6:25
Speaker 3: If I'm looking at two new camrys on the lot, I can be pretty confident that they're going to be similar.
• 6:29
Speaker 3: But if you're looking at used, you really have to take it a step further and test drive it, inspect it, that sort of thing so what's the next money threshold here after ten thousand dollars?
• 6:38
  Speaker 3: twenty.
• 6:38
Speaker 3: Uh, yeah, twenty is is one um.
• 6:42
Speaker 3: And well, we do have a $15,000 category as well.
• 6:45
Speaker 3: So that's the Hyundai Elantra 2019.
• 6:48
Speaker 3: So getting a little bit newer Again, a small four-door hatchback, or not hatchback, sedan, right.
• 6:55
Speaker 3: So very similar, just a little bit newer.
• 6:57
Speaker 3: And I think it's important to say we always recommend at CR to you know, buy the most safety that you can afford, and what that really means is buy the newest model year car that fits within your budget.
• 7:11
Speaker 3: So that's that's really what a lot of the cars on this list do, is they've depreciated more than their direct competitors while still having that reliability, right.
• 7:20
Speaker 3: So if you wanted to go buy, in this case, a 2019 Corolla, the direct competitor from Toyota, it's going to be more.
• 7:28
Speaker 3: Or if you wanted to stick to that $15,000 threshold, it's going to be an older car.
• 7:34
Speaker 3: So this list kind of helps you get the newest car that fits within these price brackets.
• 7:39
Speaker 3: Next up, yep, next up.
• 7:43
Speaker 3: Next up, um, next up, yep, next up, next up.
• 7:44
Speaker 3: Here let's go to uh, you know, I think, this one's interesting hybrid, uh, under twenty thousand dollar really.
• 7:50
Speaker 3: Uh, yeah, toyota corolla hybrid and it's 2021, so this is a.
• 7:55
Speaker 1: I think this is one of the cars that we end up recommending the most new I'm just gonna say, because that sounds really enticing, uh a car that's uh relatively new that you might even find I'm just guessing here you might even find on a dealer lot as a certified used.
• 8:09
  Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
• 8:10
Speaker 3: And I do like this one too, because those other cars that I just mentioned, I mean the Cruze is discontinued at this point and the Elantra you know that's a generation behind.
• 8:18
Speaker 3: This is the current generation Corolla and, exactly to your point, you could probably find one of these cars cpo, uh, certified, pre-owned, and that's you know.
• 8:28
Speaker 3: Cpo in general is a pretty awesome option.
• 8:31
Speaker 3: If you're, you'll pay a little bit more.
• 8:33
Speaker 3: We see about two to three percent more, uh that's all.
• 8:37
Speaker 1: See, I thought it would be more than that, but yeah on average right compared to that non-cpo version.
• 8:43
Speaker 3: But we see through our own.
• 8:44
Speaker 3: You know research and data from our members that they're more satisfied if they buy CPO and they have less problems.
• 8:50
Speaker 3: So you're kind of buying convenience right and peace of mind.
• 8:53
Speaker 2: Sure, absolutely More peace of mind than anything.
• 8:56
Speaker 3: Yeah, so I know that there's a lot of misconception out there that CPO can be a gimmick or whatever, but it at least on average tends to work out for people and they tend to be happy with it, so that's a great option.
• 9:09
Speaker 3: I think the CX-9 is our three-row SUV under $20,000 category.
• 9:16
Speaker 1: Is that the Mazda?
• 9:17
  Speaker 1: Mazda, yeah.
• 9:19
Speaker 3: Kind of an under-the-radar choice, I think, because I agree, yeah, it is discontinuedued, it's been replaced by the cx90 at this point, right, um, but it's a good car and you know, everybody's thinking about toyota highlanders and honda pilots and these other three row competitor suvs, right, but this one, uh, yeah, so the model year we have on this is 2020.
• 9:39
Speaker 2: So again, it's a pretty, pretty new car do recalls come into the play on play on those decisions?
• 9:44
Speaker 2: Like let's take the Corolla, for example, there might be a theory.
• 9:49
Speaker 2: Well, there's been 10 recalls on it.
• 9:51
Speaker 2: Are they all taken care of?
• 9:53
  Speaker 2: What were they?
• 9:53
Speaker 2: Takata bags and things of that nature Is all that considered in there?
• 9:58
Speaker 2: Is that part of it?
• 9:59
Speaker 3: It's not because we try to separate recalls from reliability just because, um, you know, a recall can be performed generally for free, right, that's that's how they work.
• 10:10
Speaker 3: You go and get them, uh, fixed for free.
• 10:13
Speaker 3: So it really we just always advise to just make sure that the car has, if it has, any open recalls, that they've been addressed.
• 10:20
Speaker 3: Yeah, that is important, but, um, you know, if well in that regard too.
• 10:24
Speaker 1: We're not talking about a transmission recall on a million vehicles.
• 10:29
Speaker 1: I'm I had did one the other day.
• 10:31
Speaker 1: It was a recall.
• 10:32
Speaker 1: It had 50 000 vehicle recall on a sticker underneath the hood.
• 10:38
Speaker 2: That was wrong I mean who cares safety?
• 10:41
Speaker 2: Or convenience those are the two categories.
• 10:42
Speaker 4: Yeah, and typically a recall.
• 10:44
Speaker 4: It's kind of a one and done.
• 10:46
Speaker 4: Here we've got this one problem, you fix it.
• 10:47
Speaker 4: It doesn't really say that reliably.
• 10:50
Speaker 4: It's going to have continued problem after problem after problem.
• 10:52
Speaker 4: It's kind of a different category.
• 10:54
Speaker 4: So let's move on Okay.
• 10:55
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, and to that point real quick.
• 10:59
Speaker 3: We're not unaware of these recalls.
• 11:00
Speaker 3: So if there was some giant recall that we know was a huge problem that caused like a do not drive, we're not going to put the car on the list, right, you know?
• 11:11
Speaker 3: If it's, if it's a big enough thing like that, sure, um, luxury suv under twenty thousand dollar.
• 11:13
Speaker 1: Buick envision 2020 I think in a similar under 20 under 20 that's a nice car for under 20 a lot of car that's the one I was thinking about when I yeah, yeah.
• 11:24
Speaker 3: So you know again, it maybe not the best performing vehicle when it was new.
• 11:28
Speaker 3: It's not going to be, you know, tearing up your, your local back roads or anything necessarily, but it's going to be comfortable and you know it's got proven reliability I totally agree.
• 11:36
  Speaker 1: That's a great, that's a great pick.
• 11:38
Speaker 1: Yeah, we haven't seen my seen.
• 11:40
Speaker 3: Mike Drive, and if you want to stick to a domestic brand, that helps you do that.
• 11:45
Speaker 3: So yeah, again an under-the-radar choice.
• 11:48
Speaker 3: That I think is a pretty nice one.
• 11:50
  Speaker 3: I like it.
• 11:50
Speaker 3: I personally like this one as our prior conversation.
• 11:55
Speaker 3: Pickup truck under $20,000.
• 11:57
  Speaker 3: Toyota Tacoma 2015.
• 11:59
Speaker 1: Yeah, Are you serious?
• 12:00
Speaker 1: Uh, toyota tacoma 2015.
• 12:06
Speaker 1: Yeah, are you serious?
• 12:07
Speaker 1: Down here in texas?
• 12:07
Speaker 1: I don't know, even if the tacoma has got four million miles on it.
• 12:09
Speaker 3: I don't know if you could get it for under 20.
• 12:10
  Speaker 3: It's gonna be.
• 12:11
Speaker 3: It's gonna make you a little bit more work to find the the under.
• 12:15
Speaker 3: You know twenty thousand dollars, but they are out there.
• 12:18
Speaker 3: I did make sure gotcha okay that's next.
• 12:22
Speaker 3: Yeah, so I mean with this car, just, your mileage threshold is a little higher, assuming that you know.
• 12:28
  Speaker 3: Check the frame.
• 12:29
Speaker 3: We know that these trucks tend to have maybe not in texas, but if you're in the northeast, like I am rust issues.
• 12:34
Speaker 3: Right, the frame is solid and and that speaks to getting the car yes, but, um, yeah, pretty solid truck, uh, can't go wrong.
• 12:42
Speaker 3: The answer is always miata.
• 12:43
Speaker 3: So sports car under twenty thousand dollars, uh, the 2019 mx5.
• 12:47
Speaker 3: So, uh, you know, goes kind of without saying yes, that one, um, and I like this too, because the miata got a pretty big performance upgrade in 2018, so you can still get, you know, all those upgrades, the 2019 version, for under twenty thousand dollars.
• 13:02
Speaker 3: So, and it's a six shift.
• 13:04
Speaker 1: So yeah, well, and yeah, and I've got a daughter that's going off to college.
• 13:09
Speaker 1: That may be a pick.
• 13:11
Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
• 13:13
Speaker 1: Because, right, yeah, hey, it's dependable, it's reliable, it's a cute car for a girl, especially you can't pile 20 kids in there to have a big party going down the road there is that.
• 13:24
Speaker 3: Yeah, you can't fit too many people in it, right?
• 13:26
  Speaker 2: what I don't hear.
• 13:27
Speaker 2: I don't hear any kias or any hyundais in this do you have?
• 13:31
Speaker 3: any of those we did have the the hyundai elantra under uh under 20, sorry, under 15 000 category 2019, elantra.
• 13:40
Speaker 3: And then our SUV small SUV under $20,000, 2021, kia Sportage is on there as well.
• 13:47
Speaker 3: So that's a, you know, compact SUV, the prior generation, pretty good car.
• 13:52
Speaker 3: You know generation spans from 2017 to 2022.
• 13:56
Speaker 3: So, again, you're kind of getting a car that's towards the end of that generation, so reliability is up there and, yeah, pretty solid car.
• 14:02
Speaker 3: Getting a car that's towards the end of that generation, so reliability is up there and, yeah, pretty solid car.
• 14:05
Speaker 3: I think that topic of generations I think is important too when you're shopping for a used car.
• 14:09
Speaker 3: So generations being, you know, let's say, a car gets redesigned in 2015.
• 14:13
Speaker 3: It's all new and it lasts for, you know, six, seven, eight years before it comes out.
• 14:18
Speaker 3: Because we're talking about individual model years here, right, 2021 esports in this case.
• 14:23
Speaker 3: But maybe you go and you start looking and you find a better deal on a 2020 or a 2022, some adjacent model year, um, you know.
• 14:32
Speaker 3: So it's important to just understand which generation of car you're shopping in within and then, if you go to our site, you'll be crorg, you'll be able to see all of the reliability information for all the model years.
• 14:42
Speaker 3: So you'll be able to, you know, kind of be confident that, okay, I didn't find the exact model year you're talking about, but I can be confident this one's going to be good too.
• 14:50
Speaker 1: So and so what?
• 14:50
Speaker 1: So what is the number one on your used car list, regardless of price?
• 14:57
Speaker 3: oh gosh, uh, I mean, we didn't necessarily rank them, as far as you know, sequentially in order.
• 15:03
Speaker 3: If I had to choose one, I mean just like You've been married a while.
• 15:08
Speaker 1: Do you have children?
• 15:10
Speaker 3: I do not you do not Okay.
• 15:12
Speaker 1: So I guess it would depend on whether you have children or not, but I would say okay, if you're a young family and you got a kid or two, you definitely want, I think, a two-row SUV that gets decent gas mileage and is reliable.
• 15:29
Speaker 3: Yeah, well, and that's exactly what I was just about to say, because the one I haven't mentioned yet is the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid under $20,000.
• 15:36
  Speaker 3: Totally agree, 2018.
• 15:38
Speaker 3: Yeah, Bread and butter.
• 15:40
Speaker 1: Toyota Hybrid system super efficient super, see a lot of efficient, uh, and it's going to be reliable so it's six years old and um it was six year old vehicle, I would say you could probably find one, a good, decent one that's not been wrecked or mutilated under 50 000 miles yes, I mean, uh, yeah, I don't have the mileages right in front of me, but yeah, that that seems reasonable.
• 16:03
Speaker 3: You're going to be able to, you know, get a car, especially going with something like toyota.
• 16:07
Speaker 3: That car's got a lot of life in front of it, so I wouldn't necessarily be scared of 50 000 miles, the same way I would be with you know, something from another brand I agree, I agree.
• 16:17
Speaker 1: Well, so all this information available on uh cr.
• 16:20
  Speaker 1: I'm sorry, org isn't it?
• 16:23
Speaker 3: Yeah, CRorg slash used cars, and that slash used cars is super important.
• 16:27
Speaker 3: That's where you're going to find all the information on these cars, and we also did, for the first time, ranked all the brands by their used car reliability.
• 16:36
Speaker 3: So we looked at cars 5 to 10 years old and we brought all our reliability information together and you can see which brands are most reliable and which ones aren't.
• 16:46
Speaker 1: So that college education is paying off.
• 16:50
Speaker 3: You could say that, Alex.
• 16:52
Speaker 1: it's great to talk to you.
• 16:53
Speaker 1: Thank you so much.
• 16:54
Speaker 2: We thoroughly enjoyed it, you betcha Great information crorg slash usedcars.
• 16:58
Speaker 1: You take care of yourself and enjoy the nice weather up there in Connecticut.
• 17:01
  Speaker 1: Thank you.
• 17:02
Speaker 3: All right, you guys too.
• 17:02
Speaker 3: Thank you so much you bet that was fun.

• 21:30
Speaker 1: I drove the Chevy Equinox EV 2RS.
• 21:37
Speaker 1: This is a small SUV, although I don't know who says it's small, because it really didn't feel like it was small to me.
• 21:43
Speaker 1: I don't know who says it's small, because it really didn't feel like a Nissan to me.
• 21:45
Speaker 1: I think it's just because it's not big.
• 21:46
Speaker 1: I want to point out that this has very little connection to the gasoline version.
• 21:52
Speaker 1: Chevy Equinox this is a completely different vehicle.
• 21:55
  Speaker 1: It's all new.
• 21:56
Speaker 1: I don't know why these companies do this.
• 21:59

• 22:24
Speaker 1: Slick, wind-cheating front fascia that looks good.
• 22:28
Speaker 1: Different for each trim is the nose of it.
• 22:31
Speaker 1: Sculpted sides with a forward-canted C-pillar that's the one at the very back of the car.
• 22:37
Speaker 1: Upscale-looking lighting front and rear.
• 22:39
Speaker 1: Rear hatch has an integrated sunshade over it.
• 22:43
Speaker 1: Overall, exterior design gets an A-plus rating from yours truly.
• 22:47
Speaker 1: What I liked about it?
• 22:48
Speaker 1: The modern but classy look about this.
• 22:51
Speaker 1: What could use improvement?
• 22:52
Speaker 1: Offer a sportier design, just an idea with hot rodders in mind Doesn't have to change anything other than make it racier, put some different wheels on it or whatever.
• 23:02
Speaker 1: Whatever Interior highlights include a 17.7 inch you got that 17.
• 23:10
Speaker 1: That's bigger than a foot Center.
• 23:12
Speaker 1: Touch screen Android based, by the way with a separate gauge screen up front of the driver.
• 23:19
Speaker 1: Fabric seating surfaces are absolutely awesome in this.
• 23:23
Speaker 1: I don't know what the fascination is with leather, but boy I'll say this that so many of these manufacturers these days are really putting some nice materials in the car besides leather.
• 23:35
Speaker 1: Yes, less legroom in the second row.
• 23:39
Speaker 1: There is room back there.
• 23:42
  Speaker 1: It's plenty.
• 23:43
Speaker 1: But it's a two-row Easy to get in and out of, plenty of cargo and trunk room, especially with the second row down.
• 23:50
Speaker 1: What I liked about it lots of standard features in this.
• 23:53
Speaker 1: What could use improvement?
• 23:54
Speaker 1: I just put a big question mark because I don't know.
• 23:56
Speaker 1: It's pretty good to me.
• 23:58
Speaker 1: Electric dual motor 3300 option.
• 24:02
Speaker 1: Horsepower horsepower 213 with the single motor.
• 24:06
Speaker 1: Torque is 236 pound feet.
• 24:09
Speaker 1: One speed automatic transmission doesn't have a transmission, it's a direct drive.
• 24:13
Speaker 1: 1500 pounds of towing capability, which isn't much you don't want to tow with this.
• 24:18
Speaker 1: Miles per gallon 101 in the city and 90 on the highway.
• 24:23
Speaker 1: For a combined 319 milemile range.
• 24:27
  Speaker 1: I traveled 278 miles.
• 24:30
Speaker 1: I plugged it into the 110 outlet here at the house overnight and then I got to work, which was 30 miles away.
• 24:38
Speaker 1: I plugged it in again and I always kept close to a 100% charge on it.
• 24:43
Speaker 1: So I've kind of figured out how to ease my pain when it comes to angst on these electric cars.
• 24:51
Speaker 1: Level 2 charger at home would be perfect for me here.
• 24:56
Speaker 1: Ride and handling what I liked about it was absolutely everything Smooth, comfortable ride, easily handled.
• 25:04
Speaker 1: What could use improvement?
• 25:06
Speaker 1: It still feels heavier than a gasoline-powered car Now.
• 25:10
Speaker 1: It's only 500 pounds heavier than a gasoline version of this car, but still at 4,923 pounds it's heavy and it feels heavy, but it's a battery car.
• 25:23
Speaker 1: So it's going to be heavy but it's not sluggish.
• 25:26
Speaker 1: No, no, oh God, no, not at all, absolutely not.
• 25:28

• 25:50
Speaker 1: That is a $2,700 option that I could do without.
• 25:53
Speaker 1: It's novel, but it doesn't apply around town at all.
• 25:57
  Speaker 1: It just I don't know.
• 25:58
Speaker 1: I like to drive, I like to have my hands on the wheel and I like to drive the car.
• 26:02
Speaker 1: So the Cruise option If you're a salesman and you drive back and forth to Dallas all the time, more power to you, you get that, but even in that, if you're in traffic, like we have people cutting in and out, Well, I've driven with him, so it's good that he's got his hands on the wheel.
