Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to our program on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 0:03Speaker 1: the Zone. My name is Craig Wait. Thanks so much
- 0:05Speaker 1: for joining us. Glad to have you with us today.
- 0:08Speaker 1: And us, of course includes the producer of this program.
- 0:13Speaker 2: He's Cameron D. Parker.
- 0:14Speaker 1: The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas or,
- 0:19Speaker 1: in the case of last night, the D stands for
- 0:21Speaker 1: don't touch the block punt. Now, Kim says that he doesn't,
- 0:27Speaker 1: you know, watch the Cowboy You didn't watch us night.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I did not, you know, I got to Here's something else.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Here's another thing I've thought of about this whole phenomenon
- 0:35Speaker 1: of you refusing to watch your refusing to watch your
- 0:38Speaker 1: favorite football team. You know, I've gone about this all wrong.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I've been saying all season long, Hey, you know, you
- 0:47Speaker 1: miss out on some big moments for them like that,
- 0:50Speaker 1: But you did see the craziness at the end of
- 0:52Speaker 1: the Washington game and some of that.
- 0:54Speaker 2: And then what I should have been saying.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Is you're missing out on real rare stuff like what
- 1:00Speaker 1: happened last night. I mean nothing, The Cowboys hadn't done
- 1:03Speaker 1: anything like that since Leon led in nineteen ninety three,
- 1:06Speaker 1: and it's rare to happen anywhere in the National Football League,
- 1:11Speaker 1: but for Imani Warria who touched that live ball, and
- 1:15Speaker 1: I had to explain it. I explained it to my wife,
- 1:18Speaker 1: explained it to Linda, explained it to my youngest son, Jason,
- 1:21Speaker 1: who didn't quite.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Understand the rule. The rule is simple.
- 1:24Speaker 1: If whether a punt is blocked or not, what if
- 1:30Speaker 1: it goes forward and crosses the line of scrimmage. It's
- 1:33Speaker 1: a live ball. It's just like a regular punt or
- 1:35Speaker 1: even like an onside kick. It's a live ball.
- 1:39Speaker 2: You can touch it if you want to. But if
- 1:42Speaker 2: you touch it and.
- 1:42Speaker 1: You don't field it, like what happened with a warriaight,
- 1:45Speaker 1: it's a live ball. And instead of the Cowboys having
- 1:48Speaker 1: the ball around the Cincinnati forty yard line with just
- 1:51Speaker 1: under two minutes to go and a chance to go
- 1:53Speaker 1: in and win the game, Cincinnati gets it back, they
- 1:56Speaker 1: drive down and of course they hit the long pass
- 1:59Speaker 1: Chris Collins. Were just called it boom, and then it
- 2:01Speaker 1: went in for the touchdown to Jamar Chase, and defeat
- 2:08Speaker 1: is snatched from the jaws of victory for the Cowboys.
- 2:12Speaker 1: So you missed out on some of those rarities that
- 2:16Speaker 1: happens by not watching this football team.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Yeah, but it happens to your favorite team, so it's
- 2:22Speaker 3: not as fun if you're on the receiving end of
- 2:24Speaker 3: said block punt.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Now, if you're Bengals fan, that's probably fantastic, even though
- 2:29Speaker 3: you're still only what five and eight this season. Now,
- 2:33Speaker 3: when you're like the team that botched it, then it's like, yeah,
- 2:36Speaker 3: it's not And the win I can just hear you
- 2:38Speaker 3: recap it.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yeah, okay.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And when the Bengals winning, it gave him a chance
- 2:43Speaker 1: a two percent chance to make the playoffs. In case
- 2:46Speaker 1: you're wondering, the lost Cowboys are still mathematically alive, it
- 2:49Speaker 1: dropped them to a zero point two percent chance to
- 2:53Speaker 1: make the playoffs.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Are we alives to get the first overall pick? That's
- 2:57Speaker 3: my question. That's what I care more about out at
- 3:00Speaker 3: this point.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Okay, all right, listen, there's different ways to look at it.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Like you said, when it happens to your own team
- 3:06Speaker 1: is not much fun. I think back then, this happened
- 3:10Speaker 1: before I was alive, so I can't really, you know,
- 3:12Speaker 1: a compliment, comment on it as intelligently as I could
- 3:16Speaker 1: if I were alive. But I've read all the history
- 3:18Speaker 1: stuff about the incredible the shot heard around the world
- 3:21Speaker 1: when the Giants beat the Dodgers in the nineteen fifty
- 3:23Speaker 1: one Nationallygue playoff, as the Dodgers had a thirteen and
- 3:27Speaker 1: a half game lead on the Giants in August, they
- 3:29Speaker 1: were in fifth places. They come all the way back
- 3:30Speaker 1: and the Dodgers didn't play poorly down the stretch. They
- 3:32Speaker 1: played about five hundred ball, but the Giants went thirty
- 3:34Speaker 1: seven and seven and caught him.
- 3:36Speaker 2: And they had a best of three playoff, and.
- 3:40Speaker 1: The Giants won Game one, and the Dodgers won Game two,
- 3:43Speaker 1: and then it was Game three at the Polo Grounds,
- 3:44Speaker 1: and it looked like the Dodgers that had won four
- 3:46Speaker 1: to one going to the bottom of the ninth and
- 3:48Speaker 1: the Giants get a base hit in a sint in
- 3:50Speaker 1: a double and now it's four to two, and then
- 3:53Speaker 1: there's a walk and then Bobby Thompson hits the what's
- 3:55Speaker 1: called shot heard around the world, the famous three run
- 3:58Speaker 1: walk off home run iron speed the Dodger. So you
- 4:01Speaker 1: know it's in sixty two, they had another playoff when
- 4:05Speaker 1: they tied in the National League and they were a
- 4:07Speaker 1: game of piece and the Dodgers were up four to
- 4:08Speaker 1: going to the top of the ninth in LA where
- 4:11Speaker 1: they only needed to get the three outs, and the
- 4:14Speaker 1: Giants scored four runs off of tiring Sandykofax and the
- 4:17Speaker 1: bullpen and they won. So I've read about those things.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I was only two years old when that happened, so
- 4:20Speaker 1: I have no recall on that. I have, you know,
- 4:24Speaker 1: so I understand what you're saying. When it happens to
- 4:26Speaker 1: your own team, it's not fun, but it's still etched
- 4:29Speaker 1: in history. It's still a part of history.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Bad history, bad football played by two bad teams. On
- 4:36Speaker 3: a very bad play I which was a block punt.
- 4:38Speaker 3: It was it was what fourth and twenty seven? Disgusting?
- 4:41Speaker 3: How do you have fourth and twenty seven as the
- 4:43Speaker 3: NFL team? The punt is blocked, and the thing is
- 4:47Speaker 3: the Cowboys weren't even trying to block the punt. Jerry
- 4:49Speaker 3: says that they weren't even trying to block the punt.
- 4:51Speaker 3: So the Bengals punt unit is garbage. Cowboys blocked the
- 4:55Speaker 3: punt and don't even know how to recover it correctly.
- 4:57Speaker 3: So it's bad play, bad teams, bad football. Entertaining game, sure,
- 5:01Speaker 3: entertaining game. Sure if you're entertained by that, then more
- 5:05Speaker 3: power to do well.
- 5:06Speaker 1: And I will admit this, I was more entertained because
- 5:08Speaker 1: we watched the Manning cast and Bill Belichick was pretty
- 5:11Speaker 1: good on that. John Legend was really good. Yeah, as
- 5:16Speaker 1: Bengals fan h and as they were talking about the
- 5:19Speaker 1: Icky Shuffle and all this stuff, and could we come
- 5:21Speaker 1: to find out that John Legend had actually composed a
- 5:23Speaker 1: song about Peyton Manning? Eli, I didn't even know about it,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and they showed like some file footage of it. He goes,
- 5:28Speaker 1: how do I not know that you had a song?
- 5:30Speaker 1: You never mentioned it to your horne at every turn?
- 5:34Speaker 2: How did you? How do you this? We just find
- 5:36Speaker 2: this out.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So it was that, and then Chris collins Worth comes on,
- 5:41Speaker 1: and I'm okay with Chris collins Worth. I've never been
- 5:44Speaker 1: a huge fan, but I've never been really that down
- 5:46Speaker 1: on him anyway. Sometimes he can be a little bit
- 5:48Speaker 1: captain obvious on some things, but he was. He was
- 5:52Speaker 1: wildly entertaining, very funny, told some great stories, and then
- 5:57Speaker 1: he nailed it on what was going to happen when
- 5:59Speaker 1: Theles had the ball after that block plant. First of all,
- 6:02Speaker 1: they were just the all three of them were freaked out.
- 6:04Speaker 1: And then he said they're gonna go deep to Jamar Chase.
- 6:07Speaker 1: They're gonna do it and boom when they rent that
- 6:09Speaker 1: out and even and then he gets something.
- 6:10Speaker 2: He's laughing.
- 6:11Speaker 1: He goes, I'm done, takes off his headset and walks out.
- 6:13Speaker 1: It's like a mic drop. He was done. So it
- 6:16Speaker 1: was a lot of fun in that respect. But I
- 6:18Speaker 1: understand what you're saying. If you're a Cowboy fan, it's
- 6:20Speaker 1: not fun. No, and five and eight is not fun,
- 6:23Speaker 1: and they're not going to be in the playoffs, but
- 6:25Speaker 1: it gets you one step close to what you want
- 6:28Speaker 1: is a coaching change. Although Bill Belichick is coaching the
- 6:31Speaker 1: North Carolina Tarty Hills, she won't get Belichick.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Yeah, which is said, maybe we can get Mike. I mean, honestly,
- 6:36Speaker 3: I think at this point it's gonna be in Deon Sanders.
- 6:38Speaker 3: That seems like a Jerry Jones move where I'm at
- 6:42Speaker 3: now with the Cowboys. You know, there's certain sporting events
- 6:46Speaker 3: in games where you see the final score. Yeah, okay,
- 6:50Speaker 3: you know, like Titans beat the Jags, right, or Jack's
- 6:53Speaker 3: potitle it doesn't matter ten.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Six Jags beat them all right? Yeah?
- 6:56Speaker 3: Ten six? Keep on scrolling Cowboys Bengals game this morning.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Thingus one, Okay, keep on scrolling. It's there's such a
- 7:03Speaker 3: bad football team, such a bad football team that I
- 7:08Speaker 3: don't even care the scores they could have won. And
- 7:10Speaker 3: my reaction would have been the same exact thing this morning.
- 7:13Speaker 3: But I mean it is good that at least I
- 7:14Speaker 3: hopefully we'll get a better draft pick. Number ten right
- 7:17Speaker 3: now looks like but maybe they'll screw it up some
- 7:20Speaker 3: more in winning game or two down.
- 7:21Speaker 2: The stretch.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Coming up, as if to rub more salt in the
- 7:26Speaker 1: wound of Cameron or other Cowboy fans.
- 7:28Speaker 2: We're gonna hear from Jerry Jones.
- 7:29Speaker 1: You know, he does that radio drop in appearance on
- 7:33Speaker 1: one to five through the Fan in Dallas every Tuesday,
- 7:35Speaker 1: and he did so this morning. So we're gonna hear
- 7:38Speaker 1: from Jerry about that. We have some more from Dabo Sweeney.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I want you to hear. We'd had some audio yesterday,
- 7:43Speaker 1: but there we didn't get to everything, and there's some
- 7:46Speaker 1: good stuff in there still from the coach of the
- 7:48Speaker 1: Clemson Tigers.
- 7:50Speaker 2: So we'll do that three o'clock hour.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Greg Tapper, managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine
- 7:55Speaker 1: joins us tap of course also as a co host
- 7:59Speaker 1: with me and with Aaron Hartigan on the high School
- 8:01Speaker 1: Scoreboard live on what used to be Ballet Sports Southwest
- 8:05Speaker 1: and before that was even Fox Sports Southwest.
- 8:06Speaker 2: It's now called fan Duel Sports Southwest.
- 8:10Speaker 1: But he's also going to be We've done one of these,
- 8:15Speaker 1: two of these together and I had a lot of fun.
- 8:18Speaker 1: And when he serves as the color analyst to me
- 8:21Speaker 1: on a high school football telecast. We did it once
- 8:25Speaker 1: a couple of years ago when Weiss played I'm trying
- 8:30Speaker 1: to remember who it was. It was a game at
- 8:31Speaker 1: the at the field. They was two years ago and
- 8:35Speaker 1: Weiss played. Is the playoff game? No, it was a
- 8:38Speaker 1: week ten game or last game of the regulars. Ship
- 8:40Speaker 1: was a Thursday night might have been, and they just
- 8:44Speaker 1: kind of whacked them. Yeah, anyway, we did we did
- 8:50Speaker 1: a game. We did that that game and then we
- 8:52Speaker 1: did we did a state championship game together and had
- 8:57Speaker 1: a lot of fun. Well, we're going to do a
- 8:59Speaker 1: couple together this year. But as a warm up, Greg
- 9:03Speaker 1: Teber and I are calling the west Lake North Shore
- 9:08Speaker 1: six a Division one state semi final game.
- 9:10Speaker 2: That's happening in Katie.
- 9:12Speaker 3: That's a warm up game those two schools.
- 9:14Speaker 1: It's a warm up for us and so and ironically,
- 9:18Speaker 1: and I mentioned this yesterday on the show, Ironically, it'll
- 9:22Speaker 1: be the only six A game I do to close
- 9:25Speaker 1: out the year. I've been doing the six A state
- 9:27Speaker 1: championship games on again. It was Fox Sports South I
- 9:31Speaker 1: was going all the way back to the HS days,
- 9:33Speaker 1: and then it was Prime Sports and then Fox Vallet
- 9:35Speaker 1: West for a long time, and then Ballet Sports Southwest
- 9:38Speaker 1: and now it's called FanDuel Sports Southwest, same network, just
- 9:41Speaker 1: different labeling on it. And I've done the six A
- 9:44Speaker 1: state championship games continuously since the last time I missed
- 9:48Speaker 1: was twenty ten. But I'm going to miss both this
- 9:51Speaker 1: year because it falls on the same day as the
- 9:52Speaker 1: Texas Clemson college football playoff game a week from Saturday,
- 9:56Speaker 1: so duty calls obviously, I'll be here for the Texas
- 9:58Speaker 1: Clemson game. Our good friend, the outstanding broadcaster Ted Emrick,
- 10:01Speaker 1: will step in for me on those six A games,
- 10:04Speaker 1: So Ted's gonna do those two six A games. But
- 10:06Speaker 1: I am doing six of the twelve state championship games,
- 10:08Speaker 1: including both six man games, and then two A Division
- 10:14Speaker 1: two has been added to my slate since I lost
- 10:16Speaker 1: the two six A games, and Tepper's gonna work with
- 10:19Speaker 1: me on that. Two A Division two is probably gonna
- 10:21Speaker 1: be Munster and Shiner is probably going to be that.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I think both will probably win their game. I Bringmond
- 10:28Speaker 1: could beat Chiner. Munster I think certainly will win in
- 10:31Speaker 1: state semifinal. And so then we got that, and they
- 10:34Speaker 1: got the three A Division one game and the four
- 10:36Speaker 1: A Division one and the five A Division two. So
- 10:38Speaker 1: I've got those other state championship games. But Tepper is
- 10:41Speaker 1: gonna work with me on that one, so he'll join us.
- 10:44Speaker 1: We'll talk more than high school football, clearly, as we
- 10:46Speaker 1: always do. We start off with college football. We'll do that.
- 10:49Speaker 1: We'll talk from college football high school football. So we
- 10:52Speaker 1: got a lot to get to on the program this afternoon,
- 10:54Speaker 1: and we're glad to have you with us right here
- 10:55Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and where
- 10:58Speaker 1: you always listen to for free.
