- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And behold, the angel of the Lord
- 0:04Speaker 1: came upon him, and a light shined in the prison.
- 0:08Speaker 1: And he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise,
- 0:14Speaker 1: arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Acts 12.17 Through the mighty name of Jesus, I declare
- 0:27Speaker 1: that the works of hell will not prevail. against the
- 0:30Speaker 1: works of Jesus. When others seek to use their influence
- 0:36Speaker 1: to terrify and intimidate my purpose, I will all the
- 0:40Speaker 1: more boldly declare the mighty works of Jesus. Like James
- 0:46Speaker 1: in Acts 12, I will hold my ground and speak
- 0:50Speaker 1: up even when the sword of unjust abuse pierces my life.
- 0:56Speaker 1: when I find myself in the chains of despair, I
- 0:59Speaker 1: will pray and meditate on your words, Jesus. I will
- 1:04Speaker 1: meditate on the truths found in Acts 12 that show
- 1:08Speaker 1: me that through your power you will send supernatural deliverance
- 1:13Speaker 1: my way in order to set me up and send
- 1:16Speaker 1: me off into the next season of opportunity, free from
- 1:21Speaker 1: the chains of man, and free from their limiting beliefs
- 1:25Speaker 1: about me. Thank you, Jesus, that even in the face
- 1:30Speaker 1: of death, you always provide a way of escape. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Thank you for praying with us today. Continue your time
- 1:45Speaker 1: with God by listening to today's Bible story, brought to
- 1:49Speaker 1: you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Death and Escape In our last story, Saul and Barnabas
- 2:04Speaker 2: teamed up to advance the gospel in Antioch. Saul was
- 2:08Speaker 2: still learning about what it truly meant to walk with Jesus,
- 2:11Speaker 2: and Barnabas acted as a brilliant mentor and friend. Now
- 2:16Speaker 2: we witness the tragic end to one of Jesus' chosen twelve.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Violence against the church increases, and the gates of hell
- 2:23Speaker 2: threaten to overcome the work of Jesus to no avail.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Inspired by the book of Acts.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible
- 2:34Speaker 3: in a Year podcast. But before we begin, I want
- 2:38Speaker 3: to let you know about a unique e-book that's yours
- 2:41Speaker 3: to download absolutely free today. It's called Breaking Free from Stress.
- 2:47Speaker 3: And my prayer is that it will help you conquer
- 2:49Speaker 3: the daily tasks and pressures and burdens that bring stress
- 2:52Speaker 3: in your life. Download your free copy of Breaking Free
- 2:56Speaker 3: from Stress today by visiting jackgraham.org slash stress. That's jackram.org
- 3:03Speaker 3: slash stress. In our previous episode, we heard about the
- 3:08Speaker 3: spread of the gospel with more non-Jews turning to Christ
- 3:11Speaker 3: because of the faithful witness of believers who had scattered
- 3:14Speaker 3: throughout the Roman world. We also learned how Barnabas and
- 3:17Speaker 3: Saul began to work together to disciple new believers in
- 3:21Speaker 3: Antioch so that they would remain firm and strong in
- 3:24Speaker 3: their faith. Today, we'll hear of more persecution and another
- 3:28Speaker 3: faithful servant who dies because of his faith. The enemy
- 3:32Speaker 3: of the gospel, Satan himself, is pulling out all the
- 3:34Speaker 3: stops to keep the name of Jesus from being proclaimed.
- 3:38Speaker 3: But through it all, God strengthens his church and makes
- 3:41Speaker 3: his name known because the work of Jesus Christ and
- 3:45Speaker 3: the witness of the gospel is unstoppable. Let's hear now
- 3:48Speaker 3: the reading from the book of Acts.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Herod watched as homes burned in the distance. Pires of
- 3:56Speaker 2: flames pierced the cold dark night. Herod's cruel smirk was
- 4:00Speaker 2: illuminated by the light of burning houses. As men and
- 4:04Speaker 2: women ran out of the burning buildings to escape death,
- 4:07Speaker 2: they were captured by Herod's guards and thrown into prison.
- 4:10Speaker 2: He was sick of Jesus' name continuing to challenge his power.
- 4:14Speaker 2: The keepers of his words were the only thing standing
- 4:17Speaker 2: between him and control. He needed them to die. He
- 4:21Speaker 2: needed the city streets to run red with the blood
- 4:24Speaker 2: of Christians so that all would know that Herod was king.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Not Jesus. James gazed upon the ruin. Screams of his
- 4:33Speaker 2: brothers and sisters rang like bells throughout the city. His
- 4:37Speaker 2: heart broke for them. The next morning, James stood boldly
- 4:40Speaker 2: in front of the palace, declaring that there is healing
- 4:43Speaker 2: in the name of Jesus. He focused on the restoring
- 4:46Speaker 2: work of Christ. How even in the most brutal of circumstances,
- 4:50Speaker 2: the name of Jesus would live on and save. As
- 4:54Speaker 2: James preached, he could see Herod's guards standing at a distance.
- 4:58Speaker 2: On the other end were scowling Jews awaiting his demise.
- 5:02Speaker 2: James stepped forward and looked them in the eye. He
- 5:05Speaker 2: did not call for them to be damned. He did
- 5:08Speaker 2: not ask for fire to be called down from heaven.
- 5:11Speaker 2: He simply proclaimed the love of God. Then, before the
- 5:14Speaker 2: entire city, Herod's guards walked up to James and shoved
- 5:18Speaker 2: a blade into his stomach. The Herodian soldiers left James
- 5:22Speaker 2: to bleed in the city streets. James gasped for air.
- 5:27Speaker 2: unable to catch any oxygen as blood filled his lungs.
- 5:30Speaker 2: The corners of his eyes began to darken, and James
- 5:33Speaker 2: remembered the words of Jesus years ago. Are you prepared
- 5:37Speaker 2: to drink the cup that I am about to drink? James,
- 5:40Speaker 2: still writhing in pain, gave a brief smile. Jesus had
- 5:44Speaker 2: asked if James was willing to die for the sake
- 5:46Speaker 2: of others. Back then, James did not understand what he meant.
- 5:50Speaker 2: But now, as his blood ran like a river through
- 5:53Speaker 2: the cobblestones, James understood. He closed his eyes, praying for
- 5:57Speaker 2: God to embrace him. And in that moment, James exhaled
- 6:01Speaker 2: his last breath on earth and inhaled into eternity. The
- 6:06Speaker 2: persecution of Herod did not cease. There was hysteria in
- 6:09Speaker 2: the streets, and flames lit up the night for weeks.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Peter was brought to the ground by several of Herod's guards.
- 6:16Speaker 2: They struggled on the ash and stone, but Peter was
- 6:18Speaker 2: eventually brought back to prison. Four squads of soldiers were
- 6:22Speaker 2: responsible for watching him since the last time he had escaped.
- 6:26Speaker 2: So Peter sat in the cold, wet cell. The only
- 6:29Speaker 2: sound was the constant drip of water echoing and the
- 6:32Speaker 2: silent whispers of Peter's prayers to God. The sun had set,
- 6:37Speaker 2: and it was about time for Peter to be taken
- 6:39Speaker 2: before Herod. For days now, the two guards had come
- 6:42Speaker 2: into his cell to beat him. Peter sat in the
- 6:45Speaker 2: corner of his cell, his cheeks were split open by clubs,
- 6:48Speaker 2: and his ribs were cracked under the large fists of
- 6:51Speaker 2: drunken soldiers. Yet Peter continued to pray for deliverance. And
- 6:55Speaker 2: only hours before he was to appear before Herod to
- 6:58Speaker 2: be judged, he heard the sound of chains cracking. Peter
- 7:03Speaker 2: looked down to see his chains had been removed. He
- 7:07Speaker 2: looked up and saw a light shining through the cell.
- 7:11Speaker 2: It was an angel of the Lord. Arise, the angel said.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Be quick and dress yourself. Wrap your cloak around you
- 7:18Speaker 2: and follow me. Peter did not ask questions. He draped
- 7:22Speaker 2: his hood over his head and moved through the prison halls.
- 7:25Speaker 2: It was damp and dark, but the light of the
- 7:28Speaker 2: angel lit Peter's path so he would not stumble. As
- 7:31Speaker 2: Peter followed the angel past the second guard, he could
- 7:34Speaker 2: not help but wonder if he was dreaming. However, Peter
- 7:37Speaker 2: was quickly proven wrong as he stood at the large
- 7:40Speaker 2: iron gate that separated the prison from the outside. He
- 7:43Speaker 2: looked down at the locks on the gate, and they were.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Left wide open.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Peter walked right through and went to visit Mary and John.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Weeks later, Herod sat upon his throne, listening to the
- 7:54Speaker 2: forced praises of his servants. He had them sing before
- 7:57Speaker 2: him with words of worship. The voice of a god,
- 8:00Speaker 2: they sang. The voice of a god and not a man.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Herod settled into his throne as he drifted away to
- 8:07Speaker 2: the sweet voices of his servants. But he was eventually
- 8:10Speaker 2: struck down, because there would be no robbing God of
- 8:13Speaker 2: his glory. Eventually, Barnabas returned to Jerusalem with Saul. So
- 8:18Speaker 2: the word of God increased and multiplied. And the gates
- 8:22Speaker 2: of hell could not prevail against the work of Jesus.
- 8:30Speaker 3: As today's scripture unfolds, we find Herod turning up the
- 8:33Speaker 3: heat on the followers of Jesus. He was determined to
- 8:36Speaker 3: stop the church from growing anymore and had begun to
- 8:39Speaker 3: lay hands on the disciples, not just threatening them, but
- 8:42Speaker 3: bringing violence upon them. Among his first victims was one
- 8:47Speaker 3: of Jesus' own apostles. James, the brother of John, was
- 8:50Speaker 3: put to death by the sword. What Herod did not
- 8:54Speaker 3: understand was that even in the act of killing James,
- 8:57Speaker 3: Herod was giving him an even greater reward. This faithful
- 9:01Speaker 3: servant of Jesus was welcomed into the arms of the
- 9:04Speaker 3: Savior because he had fought the good fight of faith
- 9:07Speaker 3: and died then as a martyr. When a believer dies,
- 9:11Speaker 3: the Christian goes straight into the presence of the Lord,
- 9:14Speaker 3: for the Bible says to be absent from the body
- 9:16Speaker 3: is to be present with the Lord. But of course,
- 9:19Speaker 3: those who are left behind, family, friends, loved ones, we grieve.
- 9:24Speaker 3: And that's what happened when James died. The believers who
- 9:28Speaker 3: knew and loved James saw this as a tragic loss,
- 9:31Speaker 3: and it was in so many ways. But they could
- 9:34Speaker 3: take comfort in knowing that their brother was with the
- 9:36Speaker 3: Lord and rejoice as they did when they faced imprisonment
- 9:40Speaker 3: and beatings. Rejoice because they knew that James was counted
- 9:44Speaker 3: worthy to suffer for the cause of Christ. and so,
- 9:47Speaker 3: if necessary, would they. Herod, on the other hand, saw
- 9:51Speaker 3: only that killing James was pleasing to the Jews, so
- 9:55Speaker 3: he also seized Peter and had him thrown into prison.
- 9:58Speaker 3: There Peter was kept under close guard. Herod intended to
- 10:02Speaker 3: bring him out before the people after the Passover, surely
- 10:05Speaker 3: to face a similar fate to James. But as Peter
- 10:08Speaker 3: sat alone in his cell, he was really not alone.
- 10:11Speaker 3: He was supported by the church and the prayers of
- 10:14Speaker 3: God's people. Acts 12.5 says this, So Peter was kept
- 10:18Speaker 3: in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to
- 10:21Speaker 3: God by the church. Some might hear this and think
- 10:24Speaker 3: they prayed because there was nothing else to do. But
- 10:28Speaker 3: that would be a misunderstanding, a huge misunderstanding of the
- 10:32Speaker 3: power of prayer. The church prayed not as a last resort,
- 10:36Speaker 3: but as a powerful weapon against the enemy. Prayer is
- 10:40Speaker 3: our first option, not our last chance. This was not
- 10:44Speaker 3: a desperate act of hopeless people. It was the humble,
- 10:47Speaker 3: faithful act of God's people as they prayed for Peter.
- 10:51Speaker 3: With the prayer, they brought their request for Peter before God,
- 10:55Speaker 3: because God was the only one who could really deliver him.
- 10:58Speaker 3: And did God ever come through? The walls of the
- 11:01Speaker 3: prison and the chains on Peter's wrists were no match
- 11:04Speaker 3: for his power. As Peter slept between two guards the
- 11:07Speaker 3: night before Herod was about to bring him out on trial,
- 11:10Speaker 3: the Lord sent an angel who awakened Peter and told
- 11:14Speaker 3: him to get up. Peter watched as the chains fell
- 11:17Speaker 3: from his hands. The angel told him to dress himself
- 11:20Speaker 3: and wrap his cloak around his body. Peter followed the
- 11:23Speaker 3: angel as they walked right out of the cell. The
- 11:26Speaker 3: prison doors were opening for them. At first, Peter thought
- 11:29Speaker 3: he was having a dream or a vision. But as
- 11:31Speaker 3: they reached the street, the angel departed and Peter knew
- 11:34Speaker 3: he was not dreaming. He was free. God had answered
- 11:38Speaker 3: the prayers of his people and delivered Peter from Herod
- 11:42Speaker 3: and those who wanted to kill him. Peter went immediately
- 11:46Speaker 3: to see John Mark and his mother Mary where believers
- 11:48Speaker 3: were gathered there praying. At first, they couldn't believe that
- 11:52Speaker 3: God had answered their prayer. They couldn't believe that it
- 11:54Speaker 3: was Peter actually knocking at the door. And they didn't
- 11:57Speaker 3: open the door, but finally they did. I can only
- 12:00Speaker 3: imagine the joy that they experienced together as they saw
- 12:04Speaker 3: the answer to their prayer, Simon Peter delivered, standing right
- 12:07Speaker 3: in front of them. Today's scripture reminds us of the
- 12:12Speaker 3: mighty power of prayer. and that through prayer, God may
- 12:16Speaker 3: choose to deliver us from the most dire of circumstances
- 12:19Speaker 3: that seem totally hopeless. And yet we trust the will
- 12:23Speaker 3: of God in all of this when we pray. As
- 12:26Speaker 3: we just heard at the beginning of this reading, James,
- 12:29Speaker 3: the great apostle, died for the cause of the gospel,
- 12:32Speaker 3: yet Peter was delivered. None of this really is understandable
- 12:35Speaker 3: this side of eternity, but we can trust the purposes
- 12:38Speaker 3: of God and know that he is sovereignly working all
- 12:41Speaker 3: things together for good and for the glory of his name. Herod,
- 12:46Speaker 3: when he discovered that Peter escaped, was livid and had
- 12:49Speaker 3: the guards put to death. He was so convinced of
- 12:52Speaker 3: his own power and importance that soon people were singing
- 12:55Speaker 3: praises to him, calling him a god, and he gladly
- 12:59Speaker 3: received their praises. But God sent an angel to strike
- 13:02Speaker 3: him down because he did not glorify God. His reign
- 13:05Speaker 3: of terror was now over, and the church continued to
- 13:09Speaker 3: grow and multiply. This is the power of the gospel
- 13:13Speaker 3: and the power of a praying church. Dear Lord, we
- 13:17Speaker 3: thank you for this privilege of prayer. And we know
- 13:19Speaker 3: that we can come to you about anything for anyone,
- 13:23Speaker 3: even in the most desperate of circumstances. We pray, O God,
- 13:27Speaker 3: that you would deliver us from every enemy that we face.
- 13:31Speaker 3: And when we have trying times in our lives and
- 13:34Speaker 3: the lives of our loved ones and friends, may we
- 13:36Speaker 3: go to our knees first. May we find in you
- 13:39Speaker 3: our hope and our help. And as the church of
- 13:42Speaker 3: the Lord Jesus Christ in this generation, Lord, make us
- 13:45Speaker 3: a praying church. Help us to know that you are
- 13:48Speaker 3: our strength and our help, our ever-present help in times
- 13:51Speaker 3: of trouble. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for listening
- 13:57Speaker 3: to today's Bible in a Year podcast. Before we go,
