- 0:26Speaker 4: April fifteenth.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Mate, So you're packed and ready to go.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Oh it's going to be a banger of a tour. Man,
- 0:31Speaker 2: super excited. I've been anticipating this one for a minute.
- 0:33Speaker 2: So it's great to be you know, great to be
- 0:36Speaker 2: here in Australia and great to be on the Big
- 0:39Speaker 2: Rock I love that name too, just a big let's go.
- 0:44Speaker 4: No, that's your first time, basis she child with the
- 0:47Speaker 4: US in twenty twenty three.
- 0:49Speaker 3: So what changed with the band in that time?
- 0:52Speaker 1: Oh man?
- 0:53Speaker 2: A bunch of new music. We've been writing new music.
- 0:55Speaker 2: We've got something that we're really excited about. We've been
- 0:58Speaker 2: releasing new music and we've had some great successes recently
- 1:04Speaker 2: worldwide and specifically in America. With some of the successes
- 1:07Speaker 2: that are just blowing my mind. And you know, we
- 1:10Speaker 2: got this song right now, wake Up Calling. That's it's
- 1:13Speaker 2: i think the third week at number one on the
- 1:15Speaker 2: rock charts in America, which is blown. That's just awesome.
- 1:18Speaker 2: And to be stepping into this twenty twenty six and
- 1:23Speaker 2: kicking it off here in Australia, it's going to be amazing.
- 1:26Speaker 2: We've got a big year played ahead of us and
- 1:29Speaker 2: so a lot of good things going on in the
- 1:30Speaker 2: pre pre roach world and stoke to be sharing them
- 1:33Speaker 2: with the world.
- 1:36Speaker 4: It's a pretty cool light of tree bray with yourselves
- 1:38Speaker 4: a data remember in land box life, do you actually
- 1:41Speaker 4: get much of a say with things?
- 1:42Speaker 3: Are?
- 1:42Speaker 4: This sort is a provided to just say this is
- 1:44Speaker 4: what you're coming with and then you've got to deal
- 1:45Speaker 4: with it.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Oh well, we were talking with a data remember about
- 1:50Speaker 2: Openers and there was a few few names floating around,
- 1:53Speaker 2: Landmarks being one of them.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And we really like the band. I think they're great.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I did a bunch of I was listening to the
- 1:59Speaker 2: band and obviously and became a fan of the band.
- 2:02Speaker 2: But then I went on on YouTube and watched a
- 2:04Speaker 2: bunch of their live footage and I was just like, Okay, cool,
- 2:06Speaker 2: these guys are the real deal. They can put on
- 2:08Speaker 2: a great show and they feel like there it's more
- 2:11Speaker 2: than just music, and that's that's exciting for us. And
- 2:14Speaker 2: so yeah, man, it's a we're definitely involved in that process. Yeah.
- 2:19Speaker 4: So for those who somehow mixed seeing Papa Rich live
- 2:22Speaker 4: in the past right right through a typical live show,
- 2:24Speaker 4: but then you speak, ye.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Oh and none typical about a p road show. Man,
- 2:28Speaker 2: these are bangers did. It's high energy, it's big rock,
- 2:32Speaker 2: it's in your face, and it's a journey, you know,
- 2:36Speaker 2: and we take you through I mean, nearly thirty years
- 2:40Speaker 2: of music in a seventy five minute show and so
- 2:45Speaker 2: it's a music of eras and I'm really proud of
- 2:49Speaker 2: what we're what we're bringing to Australia. Also the production
- 2:52Speaker 2: that we're bringing. You know, we got a really cool,
- 2:55Speaker 2: a really bitch and show put together. We got some
- 2:56Speaker 2: fire this time around, which can be fun to lighten
- 2:59Speaker 2: things on fire, and you know, I just I love that,
- 3:03Speaker 2: you know, we're able to take our show to that
- 3:05Speaker 2: level now and that's exciting for us, and I think
- 3:10Speaker 2: the fans are definitely going to get what they paid for.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Just say, there's a couple of people out there who
- 3:15Speaker 4: haven't really heard much about Papa roachs and they're going
- 3:18Speaker 4: to see data, remember, or they're going to see landmarks.
- 3:20Speaker 3: But what three songs of yours would they listen to
- 3:23Speaker 3: in order to get to know the band? Beat up
- 3:24Speaker 3: for the show?
- 3:25Speaker 1: Oh?
- 3:25Speaker 2: Man, I mean obviously the banger Last Resort. That's a
- 3:28Speaker 2: killer one of our new singles, even if it kills me.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I think that that one is.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Just a really really really really cool song. It just
- 3:38Speaker 1: hits in a new modern way.
- 3:41Speaker 2: And then I would say maybe a classic like Getting
- 3:43Speaker 2: Away with Murder.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I think those are like.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Staples of the eras of POPA roach that helped tell
- 3:49Speaker 2: our story.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Damn straight.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Now.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Papa Roach formed in California back in ninety ninety three, bros.
- 3:55Speaker 4: So what was the musical climate like back then they
- 3:57Speaker 4: gave birth to the band And where did you fit in?
- 4:00Speaker 1: Oh?
- 4:01Speaker 2: We didn't fit in anywhere, And I think that's what
- 4:03Speaker 2: made it special. To be honest, you know, we weren't
- 4:05Speaker 2: punk enough to be called punk. We weren't metal enough
- 4:07Speaker 2: to be in the metal scene. We weren't rock enough
- 4:10Speaker 2: to be in the rock scene, we weren't alternative enough
- 4:12Speaker 2: to be We just wore our own unique sound and
- 4:17Speaker 2: I think that that was like help build us into
- 4:20Speaker 2: who we are. We had a very early on, a
- 4:24Speaker 2: very diverse love for a lot of different music, and
- 4:27Speaker 2: it affected the way that we created music, and so
- 4:32Speaker 2: we created our own scene, and eventually that became the
- 4:35Speaker 2: new metal, the new metal scene, and that's when you know,
- 4:39Speaker 2: we got a big record deal and we traveled the
- 4:41Speaker 2: world and had one of our hugest successes of our
- 4:43Speaker 2: career with our song Last Resort and our album Infest,
- 4:48Speaker 2: And what a what a way to kind of break
- 4:51Speaker 2: break into the music scene. And it's been a journey
- 4:55Speaker 2: ever since.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yeah, talking about Infest my life. That kind added too.
- 5:00Speaker 4: And then it's fanta say that it changed the landscape
- 5:02Speaker 4: of rock and metal foreverybody. But when you were doing
- 5:05Speaker 4: that album, when you finished it, like, did you have
- 5:08Speaker 4: any idea that it could be something special or did
- 5:10Speaker 4: it did catch you by the surprises?
- 5:13Speaker 2: I'll tell you it was special to us. I really
- 5:16Speaker 2: feel that we we thought we had something special. It
- 5:18Speaker 2: just we didn't know if the world was going to
- 5:20Speaker 2: connect with it on in such a way that they did.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I mean we we thought we were going to put
- 5:26Speaker 2: out an album, tour in a van and maybe sell
- 5:31Speaker 2: one hundred and fifty two hundred thousand records.
- 5:33Speaker 1: And that's not what happened.
- 5:37Speaker 2: We put on an album and it was like a
- 5:39Speaker 2: rocket ship ride to the top. And I didn't know
- 5:43Speaker 2: how to handle fame. I didn't know how to handle success,
- 5:45Speaker 2: and it was just a very wild time for us.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And we had I'll tell you this though. We had
- 5:51Speaker 2: a lot of great times in that era and a
- 5:55Speaker 2: lot of big wins and a lot of big moments.
- 5:58Speaker 1: And I looked back upon that time in my life
- 6:02Speaker 1: with a lot of.
- 6:07Speaker 2: There were great moments that I was prideful of, but
- 6:09Speaker 2: then there were moments that I was like, man, I
- 6:11Speaker 2: regret that, you know. So it's a there's no handbook
- 6:16Speaker 2: to becoming famous, you know.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And I there were.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Moments that I handled it gracefully and moments that I
- 6:23Speaker 2: just went at it like an idiot.
- 6:29Speaker 4: One thing that I've always loved and respect it about
- 6:31Speaker 4: Papa Ruchbaine is that you've never tried to fit in
- 6:34Speaker 4: or adapt to the change in face of metal life.
- 6:36Speaker 4: You've always done what you want despite the trends, and
- 6:39Speaker 4: you've always been at kick House broad Band because of that,
- 6:42Speaker 4: Like you guys have always had a lot of self belief.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you, man, I'm glad you see that in us.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I think that that comes from kind of not fitting
- 6:54Speaker 2: in early on in our career and just going We
- 6:57Speaker 2: got to forge a path of our own.
- 6:59Speaker 1: And I think that.
- 7:01Speaker 2: That's what makes a lot of really successful bands. That's
- 7:05Speaker 2: part of the stew of what makes a band successful,
- 7:07Speaker 2: I think is that you're not paying attention to just
- 7:11Speaker 2: the latest trend and trying to create something new and
- 7:15Speaker 2: original and push things forward creatively and take risks. And
- 7:22Speaker 2: the moments in our career that we've taken those big
- 7:25Speaker 2: risks have been some of the moments that have been
- 7:27Speaker 2: the most successful for us.
- 7:29Speaker 1: You know.
- 7:29Speaker 2: For instance, after we had our big hit Last Resort
- 7:33Speaker 2: and that album infest It, you know, there was a
- 7:37Speaker 2: moment where our popularity had kind of dwindled and we
- 7:42Speaker 2: were reinventing the sound of the band again, and we
- 7:45Speaker 2: released an album called Getting Away with Murder, and we
- 7:48Speaker 2: particularly we released a song called Scars, and this song
- 7:53Speaker 2: was so different for us, but it catapulted us into
- 7:57Speaker 2: this new level of success again and broke us back into.
- 8:04Speaker 1: A big in a big way.
- 8:06Speaker 2: We went and sold a million and a half records
- 8:08Speaker 2: on that album, and people thought our band was dead,
- 8:12Speaker 2: and it was because we evolved the band and tried,
- 8:15Speaker 2: you know, we it.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Was a reflection, a new reflection of who we were.
- 8:18Speaker 2: And you know, that was the first time I tried
- 8:21Speaker 2: to get sober in my life and change some things up.
- 8:24Speaker 2: And I think that that like brought a breath of
- 8:26Speaker 2: fresh air into who we were. And so I think
- 8:29Speaker 2: that those authentic evolutions that we take risks continue to
- 8:35Speaker 2: open up new doors for us.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Yeah, cool man cover right, You've always championed the course
- 8:41Speaker 4: of mental health too, like, not just for your music
- 8:44Speaker 4: but in everyday life, Like you've been doing it for
- 8:47Speaker 4: a while now, Like, have you noticed a changing attitude and.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Knowledge surrounding mental health?
- 8:51Speaker 4: Do you think because of bands like yourself and others
- 8:54Speaker 4: in music that have been in mind?
- 8:56Speaker 2: Oh yeah, It's always been a fabric of who we
- 8:58Speaker 2: are and what we sing about, what we what we
- 9:00Speaker 2: talk about in our music, taking the darkness and turning
- 9:05Speaker 2: it into light, you know, taking lemons and making lemonade,
- 9:09Speaker 2: you know, just a goofy. Saying like that really means
- 9:11Speaker 2: something deep. Change transformation has been a huge part of
- 9:15Speaker 2: my life creatively, personally, spiritually, and the mental health conversation
- 9:24Speaker 2: has come to the forefront in the recent years, and
- 9:27Speaker 2: I think it's important that we address it.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I think it's important that.
- 9:30Speaker 2: We find ways to heal and grow and then take
- 9:36Speaker 2: what we've learned individually and pass it on to somebody
- 9:40Speaker 2: that is in need of healing and growing. I think
- 9:45Speaker 2: in order to keep that healing and that evolution, you
- 9:49Speaker 2: have to share it. You've got to help somebody that's
- 9:52Speaker 2: in need. And I think that that is the magic.
- 9:54Speaker 2: It's not about just healing and growing. It's about healing
- 9:58Speaker 2: and growing and helping and serving. That's that's where the
- 10:02Speaker 2: magic is. Because if you just keep it for yourself,
- 10:06Speaker 2: it's that's not how you change the world, you know.
- 10:10Speaker 2: And I think it's an inside job in the beginning
- 10:16Speaker 2: to heal and grow. But then, like I said a
- 10:19Speaker 2: million times over, if you if you share that and
- 10:22Speaker 2: you can help somebody else, it helps put things in perspective.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I think for me, and you know, I think that
- 10:29Speaker 1: I don't know, man, it's.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Been an evolution for me in this career, and I
- 10:35Speaker 2: think we're entering into this era of there's some wisdom
- 10:39Speaker 2: that I've gained and I want to share it.
- 10:44Speaker 3: That's fantastic. Right before I let you go, I've got
- 10:46Speaker 3: a new segment. I've started court Fighter Ball.
- 10:48Speaker 4: So basically I've drawn through social media and I'm bound
- 10:51Speaker 4: if you fight is that I want to know a.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Little bit more about Okay, cool, it will stut but fun.
- 11:00Speaker 4: You've got a head like Babrian like looks for the
- 11:02Speaker 4: sort of why that the compin is always want.
- 11:05Speaker 3: To a judge.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Oh yeah, Like was there cowvity search involved in this one?
- 11:10Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 11:10Speaker 2: Man? So that that's from our video brain Dead, and
- 11:14Speaker 2: we take you into this world of this institution. This
- 11:17Speaker 2: fella has been institutionalized and uh man, sometimes we feel
- 11:24Speaker 2: like we're just imprisoned by our own darkness in this
- 11:30Speaker 2: video right here, like I'm just in the work. I'm
- 11:33Speaker 2: in a bad spot, you know, And it's kind of
- 11:36Speaker 2: a reflection of some of the turmoil I experienced in
- 11:39Speaker 2: my life. And yeah, I can be my own worst
- 11:43Speaker 2: enemy and and the cops right there just represent like
- 11:48Speaker 2: this self imposed darkness in my life. And yeah, man,
- 11:54Speaker 2: depression can feel like a trap, right, I'm.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Just gonna message it. We go to wind up because
- 12:00Speaker 3: you've got other commitments.
- 12:01Speaker 4: So thanks very much for your sim It's been a
- 12:03Speaker 4: pleasure chatting with your Papaachia here for the Big Rock Tour.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Studying on April fourth, so I'll hopefully be in the
- 12:10Speaker 4: Brisbane show.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Brothers.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Take the shout out to the heavy and it was
- 12:14Speaker 1: great wrapping with you.
