- 0:00Speaker 1: Either Mattias from Melancholin beautiful, well done, thank you.
- 0:04Speaker 2: How does it feel to be hitting the road with
- 0:06Speaker 2: penny Wise, two legendary punk bands coming together for this
- 0:09Speaker 2: huge tour in Australia?
- 0:11Speaker 1: It was great. I mean we actually did our first
- 0:14Speaker 1: tour outside of Sweden back in nineteen ninety five was
- 0:17Speaker 1: with Pennewise in Germany, so yeah, it's gonna be great.
- 0:21Speaker 1: So we're done many shows for those cases. Yeah, it's
- 0:25Speaker 1: a long time ago, so.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah, so obviously you guys go way back. Did it
- 0:30Speaker 2: just make sense to come together again for this Australian tour?
- 0:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I did, And this tour actually just popped up
- 0:37Speaker 1: as a thing, Yeah, and we decided to do it.
- 0:42Speaker 1: So it's especially just because it's anyways and as you know,
- 0:48Speaker 1: it's it's it's a really good thing for yeah, both. Yeah, awesome. Yeah.
- 0:54Speaker 2: With the tour kicking off in Wollongong and covering both
- 0:57Speaker 2: metro and regional shows, what are you most looking for
- 1:00Speaker 2: to coming back to Australia?
- 1:02Speaker 1: Of course the weather. It's it's very depressing now in Sweden.
- 1:06Speaker 1: You know it's the older I get, the more I
- 1:08Speaker 1: hate the winter, you know, So it's and I'm very old,
- 1:11Speaker 1: so it's you can, but it's yeah, it's gonna be great.
- 1:17Speaker 1: It's always great. Good get back to Australia and meet
- 1:21Speaker 1: all the nice people and hang out, you know.
- 1:24Speaker 2: So yeah awesome. Are you looking forward to that flight though?
- 1:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I know it's actually yeah, it's it's like going
- 1:36Speaker 1: to the US twice. Yeah, it's a long flight. But
- 1:41Speaker 1: but but I mean it is what it is, you know, Yeah,
- 1:44Speaker 1: that's it.
- 1:45Speaker 2: We've played alongside some Oh sorry, Given both bands have
- 1:49Speaker 2: such an extensive history in punk rock, will you be
- 1:52Speaker 2: incorporating any surprises into your live performances or sticking to
- 1:55Speaker 2: the fan favorites.
- 1:57Speaker 1: We'll see what happens. You know, I can't say everything
- 2:02Speaker 1: you know about that, but it's yeah, we'll see. Maybe
- 2:05Speaker 1: just some collabs, yeah awesome.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Over the years, your sound has evolved from skate punk
- 2:12Speaker 2: to something more rock confused. How would you describe the
- 2:14Speaker 2: current state of Millan Collins music and how it reflects
- 2:18Speaker 2: where you're at as a band today.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I guess it's as I said, we started off, you know,
- 2:24Speaker 1: more like a sca punk band, but you know, and
- 2:28Speaker 1: I guess when we released Penebish Pioneers back in two thousands,
- 2:32Speaker 1: it was a huge change in our sound. But I
- 2:34Speaker 1: guess the last two albums have actually been a little
- 2:38Speaker 1: bit more back to the roots. So I guess now
- 2:41Speaker 1: it's more like a good mix of our whole career
- 2:46Speaker 1: of music. You know. But when I write music, it's,
- 2:52Speaker 1: you know, whatever comes out comes out. You don't really
- 2:57Speaker 1: plan on what to do, you know, so you never
- 2:59Speaker 1: know what's gonna sound like in the future, you know.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely. And you guys have been making music for
- 3:06Speaker 2: over thirty years. What's kept that chemistry and energy within
- 3:10Speaker 2: the band so strong?
- 3:13Speaker 1: Well, we've all been. I mean, me and Nicholas started
- 3:16Speaker 1: our first band together before Mail and Calling, and then
- 3:19Speaker 1: we started Mail and Calling, and we've been very productive
- 3:23Speaker 1: through over the years, you know. And it's just fun
- 3:27Speaker 1: to make new to write new music with my best friends,
- 3:32Speaker 1: you know. So that's probably what drives me to do this.
- 3:35Speaker 1: But everything is happening in such a different way these
- 3:39Speaker 1: days than it did twenty years ago. Yeah, because I
- 3:42Speaker 1: guess now I can write songs without even meeting each other,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and you know, it's, yeah, it's different, but it's it's
- 3:48Speaker 1: very healthy and good, you know.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, And is there anything in your career that
- 3:55Speaker 2: you look back on and you wish you could change.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Or not at all. There's a lot of things that
- 4:02Speaker 1: I would like to change, of course, But if I
- 4:04Speaker 1: would change them, maybe we wouldn't be doing this now.
- 4:08Speaker 1: You know. We did some really stupid stuff back in
- 4:11Speaker 1: the days, you know, And but in hindsight, if I
- 4:14Speaker 1: look at it now, it's it's I'm happy where we
- 4:17Speaker 1: are right now, and we probably made the right decisions,
- 4:21Speaker 1: you know.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it's all been a part of the journey, I think.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, of course. And you learn from your
- 4:26Speaker 1: mistakes too, so yeah, hopefully. Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Maybe what's the weirdest or coolest thing a fan has
- 4:34Speaker 2: given you at a show or set the band?
- 4:39Speaker 1: We actually met it, not given us, But we met
- 4:42Speaker 1: a guy in the US back in early two thousands.
- 4:48Speaker 1: He owned the tattoo shop and what wanted us to
- 4:50Speaker 1: tattoo our autographs on his leg. Yeah, And we went
- 4:55Speaker 1: there and did it. And I remember when I when
- 4:57Speaker 1: I attitude my autograph on his leg. When I was done,
- 5:00Speaker 1: it looked like shit, I've never done this before. I
- 5:04Speaker 1: was like, So I was terrified with what I've done
- 5:09Speaker 1: to him. Yeah, but he was happy oh.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Good, Gee, that's dedication gee, and it looked oh yeah,
- 5:21Speaker 2: when you guys first started, how were you received in Sweden?
- 5:24Speaker 2: Given given that you guys sing in English and you
- 5:26Speaker 2: guys sound quite American influenced.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I guess it was the bands we had before Melancholin,
- 5:33Speaker 1: we sang in Swedish and almost every band in the
- 5:36Speaker 1: punkirk scene back then sang in Swedish, and we wanted
- 5:39Speaker 1: to sing in English just because it was the music
- 5:42Speaker 1: that we listened to in the escapboard videos was in English.
- 5:45Speaker 1: So we started to do that. So we were among
- 5:49Speaker 1: the group of first bands that sang in English in
- 5:52Speaker 1: this genre in Sweden back in the days, and it
- 5:56Speaker 1: was it was a good move for us to do that. Yeah,
- 6:00Speaker 1: people loved it, you know, because because it was Sweden,
- 6:04Speaker 1: everyone speaks English, you know. It's we're very influenced from
- 6:08Speaker 1: other It would probably be harder if we were a
- 6:10Speaker 1: band from France or you know too. People are very
- 6:15Speaker 1: into American culture here and the English speaking you know,
- 6:19Speaker 1: so no problem.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely. I must admit, for the longest time I
- 6:23Speaker 2: thought you guys were from the US, so to find
- 6:26Speaker 2: out you were from Sweden was a shock.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I actually hear that still that people are like,
- 6:32Speaker 1: what are they from?
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 6:33Speaker 1: So yeah, especially when we were on Epiitaph. You know,
- 6:37Speaker 1: we were the first non American band to be signed
- 6:41Speaker 1: to Epitaph, So I guess many people thought that we were.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Yeah crazy, that's awesome. When you're not touring or making music,
- 6:51Speaker 2: what hobbies do you enjoy most?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Well, I'm I'm into drag racing, I got yeah, yeah,
- 7:03Speaker 1: not draged No, No, I'm into guards. And I also
- 7:08Speaker 1: make my own hot sauce. Oh not company, yeah, I
- 7:15Speaker 1: on top of my garage, I have my hot sauce factory.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Oh wow, that's also what's the name of the hot sauce?
- 7:21Speaker 1: Mad? Mad's Hot Sauce?
- 7:23Speaker 2: Okay, I'm gonna check it out.
- 7:24Speaker 1: That's awesome. It's hard to get in Australia. But it's uh,
- 7:28Speaker 1: it's I make everything myself, you know, So it's it's
- 7:31Speaker 1: it's pretty.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Funny the whole process. That's cool. Yeah, touring can be grueling.
- 7:37Speaker 2: So how do you stay connected with your personal passions
- 7:39Speaker 2: or recharged during downtime.
- 7:42Speaker 1: When I'm not touring or during touring During touring, Yeah, well,
- 7:47Speaker 1: I guess touring for me is back in the days
- 7:50Speaker 1: when we toured it was. Nowadays it's more the show
- 7:54Speaker 1: is the most important thing that happens in the day.
- 7:58Speaker 1: But when we started to tour, the show was just
- 8:00Speaker 1: the thing that you did. Everything else was a big adventure.
- 8:03Speaker 1: So now for me, it's more about recharging and being
- 8:07Speaker 1: able to do as good shows as you can, you know.
- 8:10Speaker 1: So it's I don't really do much on off time
- 8:14Speaker 1: on touring. You just try to recharge and most of
- 8:18Speaker 1: the times you're jet lagged and the you know, so
- 8:22Speaker 1: it's you're hanging in there.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Yeah, that's sensible. Was there a time back in the
- 8:28Speaker 2: day where you guys would party quite hard on tour
- 8:30Speaker 2: or yeah?
- 8:31Speaker 1: I was, Yeah, of course, And I guess there's partying still,
- 8:35Speaker 1: but but in a totally different way because back then
- 8:38Speaker 1: you were just yeah doing Now just hang out in
- 8:42Speaker 1: the dressing room, you know, or at a hotel room,
- 8:45Speaker 1: or maybe at a local bar. But you know, yeah,
- 8:47Speaker 1: but of course it's different. Definitely. Yeah. No. Nice.
- 8:52Speaker 2: With so much music coming out all the time, what
- 8:55Speaker 2: are you listening to right now? Are there any new
- 8:57Speaker 2: bands or musicians you're particularly excited about or spied by?
- 9:01Speaker 1: Well, I've said this before, but it's there's a Norwegian bank. Well,
- 9:06Speaker 1: the Blood Command I started to listen to a lot.
- 9:09Speaker 1: They toured Australia actually recently. Otherwise, Yeah, for me, it's
- 9:14Speaker 1: been there's so much music. So and my kid, he's
- 9:22Speaker 1: turning seventeen and he's he's a drummer and he's his
- 9:27Speaker 1: life is music. So I learned a lot from him too.
- 9:31Speaker 1: What's new and cool?
- 9:33Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 9:34Speaker 1: Oh nice.
- 9:35Speaker 2: And because you guys started as sort of a skate
- 9:38Speaker 2: punk band, did any of you guys actually ever skate
- 9:42Speaker 2: or do you still skate?
- 9:43Speaker 1: Yeah, of course we were skating. I mean, that's the
- 9:45Speaker 1: reason why we started the band. Yeah, there's a lot
- 9:48Speaker 1: of false skate punk bands out that they're never even skated.
- 9:51Speaker 2: That's right, that's right.
- 9:53Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, yeah, for me, I started skating nineteen
- 9:57Speaker 1: eighty seven and it was a huge part of my
- 10:01Speaker 1: life for stay this. You know, I wouldn't be here
- 10:04Speaker 1: without skaping. Yeah, yeah, that's you learned how to you
- 10:09Speaker 1: could do something without being in a team, you know,
- 10:13Speaker 1: and without going to practice and stuff like that. Yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 1: it was it was important for me to to do that.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Yeah, you do on your own, that's right to and
- 10:23Speaker 2: you learn. Yeah, that's awesome, Natias, thank you so much
- 10:27Speaker 2: for your time today. We can't wait to see you
- 10:29Speaker 2: guys down under soon.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you so much.
