- 0:07Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:10Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Bars, Bizarre and Lazarn Hello.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Everybody nailed it. Joined us always by our bar gap.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex Bars.
- 0:23Speaker 2: They're building a program. That program is being built a
- 0:26Speaker 2: lot like a house. And to me right now, Alex,
- 0:29Speaker 2: I don't know how you feel about it. They have
- 0:32Speaker 2: a foundation to the home. They have walls, they have
- 0:35Speaker 2: a ceiling, they have a roof over their head. Now
- 0:38Speaker 2: we're starting to remodel the inside. Right now is when
- 0:42Speaker 2: you get the fancy granite countertop and the sub zero appliances,
- 0:47Speaker 2: and the nice couch and the flat screen TV on
- 0:51Speaker 2: the wall and all that different kind of stuff. That's
- 0:54Speaker 2: all the things that we're talking about this offseason. But
- 0:57Speaker 2: let's not lose sight of the fact that you have
- 1:00Speaker 2: Coach of the Year, you have a quarterback, was the
- 1:03Speaker 2: runner up for the MVP. You won seventeen games including
- 1:07Speaker 2: playoffs this season. This is not the same place this
- 1:10Speaker 2: team has been the last couple of off seasons where
- 1:13Speaker 2: they have turn over the entire roster.
- 1:15Speaker 3: It's unmanageable to do list this time around.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I guess I already gave the take that
- 1:23Speaker 2: I was going to give, So I think I need
- 1:25Speaker 2: to get off that soapbox about this Patriots off season. Hello, everybody,
- 1:31Speaker 2: Evan Lazar, Alex Barth Alex behind the glass. We're gonna
- 1:35Speaker 2: talk about it. We're gonna talk about some football for
- 1:37Speaker 2: the next couple of hours here on Catch twenty two.
- 1:40Speaker 2: And we have some things to talk about. Some Patriots
- 1:43Speaker 2: news last night with some coaching news that we are
- 1:46Speaker 2: all kind of expecting with Zach Korr. But it is
- 1:49Speaker 2: now official that Zach Korr is going to be promoted
- 1:53Speaker 2: to defensive coordinator. Have the interim tag removed however you
- 1:56Speaker 2: want to look at that, but he's being promoted the
- 1:58Speaker 2: defensive coordinator. No official announcement yet from the team. This
- 2:02Speaker 2: is all reported announcement, but that announcement expected to come
- 2:06Speaker 2: here in the next couple of days. Then we're gonna
- 2:09Speaker 2: do some off season stuff. We have my top five
- 2:13Speaker 2: off season needs for the Patriots, and then we'll dovetail
- 2:17Speaker 2: that with some combine some draft targets, some free agent targets.
- 2:21Speaker 2: I got some names. I got some names.
- 2:22Speaker 3: We're finally doing names.
- 2:23Speaker 2: So we're finally doing some names and I've been I
- 2:26Speaker 2: know you've been doing the same thing. I've been plugging
- 2:28Speaker 2: away at the guys that you know. I kind of
- 2:33Speaker 2: took our great mock draft database website that puts together
- 2:38Speaker 2: the consensus board. I kind of took like twenty to
- 2:42Speaker 2: fifty those thirty names of the guys between twenty and
- 2:45Speaker 2: fifty that as we go along the process here, I'm
- 2:48Speaker 2: sure the order might change quite a bit in the media,
- 2:51Speaker 2: not necessarily internally with teams, but with the media ranking
- 2:56Speaker 2: those and looking at some of the guys that might
- 2:59Speaker 2: be available at third and who the Patriots might be
- 3:02Speaker 2: interested in. So I got needs, I got names, we
- 3:05Speaker 2: got the whole thing. Got the combine next week. But
- 3:08Speaker 2: I wanted to start with the news Alex last night
- 3:11Speaker 2: that Zach Kor now officially, well unofficially officially being promoted
- 3:16Speaker 2: to defensive coordinator, a move that everybody kind of saw coming.
- 3:19Speaker 2: There was some logistical stuff with the Rooney rule that
- 3:21Speaker 2: they kind of had to get out of the way.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Sounds like they did that. Some reporting on that of
- 3:26Speaker 2: a couple of interviews, at least one I saw if
- 3:29Speaker 2: Phil Perry said Abandon from the Cleveland Browns interviewed so
- 3:35Speaker 2: the Patriots doing the thing that we all thought they
- 3:38Speaker 2: probably should do, were expected to do, was Zach Korr.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I would say, I don't have a ton of takes,
- 3:47Speaker 2: so we all just saw what Zach Korr does. He
- 3:50Speaker 2: literally just did it just a couple of weeks ago.
- 3:53Speaker 2: But the one thing that I think really has stood
- 3:57Speaker 2: out to me about this whole process now is that
- 4:00Speaker 2: they have continuity coaching, continuity on both sides of the ball,
- 4:06Speaker 2: and we have we have archetypes again, like we have
- 4:08Speaker 2: prototypes of like this is a Patriots edge rusher, this
- 4:12Speaker 2: is a Patriots safety, this is a Patriots linebacker. And
- 4:15Speaker 2: I do think that that helps you kind of narrow
- 4:17Speaker 2: the list down a little bit in a draft that
- 4:20Speaker 2: admittedly is is kind of difficult given where they're picking,
- 4:24Speaker 2: to narrow the list down. So Zach Korr thought he
- 4:28Speaker 2: got better and better. If you want to just look
- 4:30Speaker 2: at play calling, game planning, you know, those opening drives
- 4:34Speaker 2: were a problem for a while, that pretty much went
- 4:36Speaker 2: away in the playoffs. They got better at it, he improved.
- 4:41Speaker 2: The players rave about him, talking about his attention to detail,
- 4:45Speaker 2: his preparedness, his you know, streamlined kind of communication where
- 4:50Speaker 2: everybody sort of knows what they're doing and they don't
- 4:52Speaker 2: have a not bogged down by terminology or mixed messaging
- 4:57Speaker 2: or whatever like that. So a lot of praises for Zaz.
- 5:01Speaker 2: I also just think, you know, one thing that Mike
- 5:02Speaker 2: Rabel said last year when he got the job is
- 5:06Speaker 2: that he looks at coaches kind of the same way
- 5:09Speaker 2: he looks at players, and that everybody's developing at their job.
- 5:13Speaker 2: And not only did Zach Corr develop in a year
- 5:16Speaker 2: in a positive way, but this is a thirty seven
- 5:19Speaker 2: year old coach that I'm assuming Mike Rabel wants to
- 5:23Speaker 2: keep developing as a defensive coordinator and as a coach
- 5:26Speaker 2: in this league. So you know, how much better could
- 5:30Speaker 2: he get? First of all, but also just Rabel's big
- 5:32Speaker 2: on like investing in people, and this is a person
- 5:35Speaker 2: that he's invested in and a person that he's very
- 5:38Speaker 2: high on that they wanted to keep around and keep
- 5:41Speaker 2: working with.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean he earned it. He earned it.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I don't like anybody's gonna look at that and say, like,
- 5:45Speaker 1: you know too soon how to get here. He did
- 5:48Speaker 1: the job last year and did it well. Yeah, so
- 5:50Speaker 1: they has anybody put out Terrell Williams title no yet.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I saw some places when I was looking up last
- 5:57Speaker 1: night had him listed as assistant head coach.
- 5:59Speaker 2: So he so he's a Rabel's assistant head coach in Tennessee.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I just I wasn't sure if I because I hadn't
- 6:04Speaker 1: heard that and I couldn't find anybody reporting it.
- 6:06Speaker 3: I just saw it listed.
- 6:09Speaker 1: But yeah, it makes sense because Trell Williams gonna kind
- 6:11Speaker 1: of help with the bigger picture, which we kind of
- 6:13Speaker 1: heard last year was something that he specialized and to
- 6:16Speaker 1: begin with, and then Zach Cord just gets to keep
- 6:18Speaker 1: doing what he's been doing. And let's also, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 1: I don't think it's been as widely reported, but Mike
- 6:24Speaker 1: Reese reporting last night that Vinnie de Palma, who was
- 6:27Speaker 1: a general defensive assistant played linebacker at PC, is going
- 6:30Speaker 1: to take Zach COR's job as the inside linebackers coach.
- 6:33Speaker 1: So how many times did we talk about this in
- 6:36Speaker 1: the late Belichick era and then with Trod Mayo the pipeline, Right,
- 6:39Speaker 1: it's not just about having good coaches in those coordinator roles.
- 6:42Speaker 1: It's about having the next man up and being ready
- 6:44Speaker 1: to go. You really don't I don't want to say
- 6:47Speaker 1: you don't want to be hiring outside the building because
- 6:49Speaker 1: you obviously want an influx of new ideas, but like
- 6:52Speaker 1: you want to have familiarity and people who are ready
- 6:54Speaker 1: to go in each spot and boom, this is bum
- 6:56Speaker 1: bum bum stepping on up, you know. I think they
- 7:03Speaker 1: it shows the staff they've built, not just like, oh,
- 7:06Speaker 1: Zach Korr was a nice addition when they put the
- 7:08Speaker 1: defensive staff together. But one guy moves up, boom, another
- 7:11Speaker 1: guy moves up, boom, another guy moves up, and there
- 7:13Speaker 1: you go, and then you know they'll fill I'm sure
- 7:15Speaker 1: that that assistant general defensive assistant role that will probably
- 7:18Speaker 1: come from outside the organization, I would think, But just
- 7:21Speaker 1: kind of shows that that's a healthy coaching staff. That's
- 7:23Speaker 1: a strong coaching staff when you can just move everybody
- 7:26Speaker 1: up and the machine keeps on going.
- 7:28Speaker 2: And they have that kind of on the offense too,
- 7:30Speaker 2: with you know, Thomas Brown and Ashton Grant and guys
- 7:33Speaker 2: that are are both up and coming or have experienced
- 7:36Speaker 2: calling plays on the offense. If something were to happen
- 7:39Speaker 2: in the future with Josh mccaniels, I'm not saying anything
- 7:42Speaker 2: is going to but you know, whether it's another job
- 7:44Speaker 2: or what have you the other thing on Vinnie di
- 7:47Speaker 2: Palma real quick, and then I want to go back
- 7:48Speaker 2: to the cord just for one more second. With de Palma.
- 7:52Speaker 2: He basically was doing the job for the majority of
- 7:55Speaker 2: last year.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Right, same thing as core kind of.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Yeah, because Zach Korr was obviously, you know, doing the
- 8:02Speaker 2: defensive coordinator responsibilities. So when I asked around talking about
- 8:06Speaker 2: you know, I wrote about the Zach Corer thing. I
- 8:09Speaker 2: don't know, maybe October of the season when it really
- 8:12Speaker 2: started to pick up steam, and a lot of the
- 8:15Speaker 2: linebackers and players told me that the guy that was
- 8:18Speaker 2: doing the day to day and the linebacker room was
- 8:20Speaker 2: Vinie de Palma. So this is not a guy that
- 8:23Speaker 2: is you know, he is relatively young, and he was
- 8:26Speaker 2: just playing a couple of years ago. But he was
- 8:29Speaker 2: basically doing this job last year and has that linebacker background,
- 8:33Speaker 2: former player, former linebacker himself. So it seems like, like
- 8:37Speaker 2: you said, the pipeline is healthy. There seemed to be
- 8:40Speaker 2: in good hands, you know, I think was Zach Korr.
- 8:42Speaker 2: A couple of things that stood out. You know, we
- 8:46Speaker 2: don't know yet if the playoff defense is how they're
- 8:50Speaker 2: gonna play defense during the regular season. I think it
- 8:52Speaker 2: would be tough to say that to play that way
- 8:56Speaker 2: for seventeen eighteen weeks, I think might be difficult to
- 8:59Speaker 2: be that aggressive and that blitz heavy, you know, blitzing
- 9:03Speaker 2: over forty percent of the time. That's not standard across
- 9:06Speaker 2: the NFL. It's a I would say, more of a
- 9:08Speaker 2: sample size thing than it is something that's like actually
- 9:12Speaker 2: doable over a seventeen game season. Like even Brian Flores
- 9:17Speaker 2: doesn't blitz forty four percent of the time right in
- 9:20Speaker 2: the regular season. So I don't know if that will
- 9:22Speaker 2: necessarily continue at that clip, but a couple of things
- 9:26Speaker 2: of trends that I do think will continue. They played
- 9:29Speaker 2: the next Gen database goes back to twenty eighteen. When
- 9:33Speaker 2: we talk about coverages and frequency of coverages, they played
- 9:36Speaker 2: a forty two percent split safety coverage rate last year.
- 9:40Speaker 2: That was the highest of the next Gen era. Now
- 9:42Speaker 2: that's we're going on like eight or nine seasons at
- 9:44Speaker 2: this point's almost a decade's worth of data. And the
- 9:47Speaker 2: Patriots have never played more split safety zone than they
- 9:51Speaker 2: did last year. So the system really transitioned to a
- 9:54Speaker 2: lot more quarters, which we knew was kind of coming,
- 9:57Speaker 2: but it came to fruition, a lot more corners, a
- 10:00Speaker 2: lot more cloud and you know cover six, cover two
- 10:02Speaker 2: in those split safety numbers, you know, baked into that
- 10:05Speaker 2: split safety number. So when we start talking about the draft,
- 10:09Speaker 2: they start talking about free agency, that does I think
- 10:13Speaker 2: matter in terms of especially I would say the safeties
- 10:16Speaker 2: that you're starting to look at, because right now, when
- 10:19Speaker 2: you're playing all these quarter structures, you know, whether it's
- 10:22Speaker 2: you know it's palms or or something like that, where
- 10:24Speaker 2: the safeties are matching routes instead of playing spot drop
- 10:29Speaker 2: zone over the top of the defense, they're now matching
- 10:32Speaker 2: routes from one side or the other of the formation,
- 10:35Speaker 2: and so now down the field they basically become man
- 10:38Speaker 2: to man defenders. So I think in a lot of ways,
- 10:40Speaker 2: that's why you saw the Patriots transition from Kyle Duggar,
- 10:45Speaker 2: Jabriel Pepper's to Craig Woodson Jalen Hawkins is because those
- 10:49Speaker 2: guys are faster and better in coverage and especially better
- 10:52Speaker 2: from depth rangeyer in coverage. Yeah, so you see a
- 10:56Speaker 2: lot more of that. You see a lot more of
- 10:58Speaker 2: the safeties like running the alleys to set the edge
- 11:01Speaker 2: and force the ball back inside. A lot less of
- 11:04Speaker 2: that on the edges. The edges are kind of coming
- 11:06Speaker 2: up the field and trying to make plays up the field,
- 11:08Speaker 2: so the safeties are now being asked to kind of
- 11:10Speaker 2: run the alleys and stuff like that. The other things
- 11:13Speaker 2: that I did a lot of last season was of
- 11:15Speaker 2: you know, line games and stunts up front. They were
- 11:18Speaker 2: second highest rate of stunts in the you know, defensive line,
- 11:23Speaker 2: whether it's three, you know, two man stunt, three man stunt,
- 11:26Speaker 2: whatever the case may be. So we start talking about
- 11:28Speaker 2: defensive linemen, you're talking about penetrators, like guys that get
- 11:31Speaker 2: up the field, Guys that penetrate gaps, Guys that get
- 11:35Speaker 2: off the ball on the edges, that have that first
- 11:37Speaker 2: step explosiveness. So all things that are you know, a
- 11:42Speaker 2: want things to consider as we get into the evaluation
- 11:45Speaker 2: part of the offseason. But also just you know, interesting
- 11:48Speaker 2: kind of fact toys, the things that I think will
- 11:50Speaker 2: continue now that Zach Korr is rising up to that
- 11:54Speaker 2: defensive coordinator level officially, So all good there. I want
- 11:59Speaker 2: to get into off season needs. I just listened to
- 12:03Speaker 2: myself at the top of the show, which I hate doing.
- 12:05Speaker 2: By the way, I don't know if you did, do
- 12:06Speaker 2: you hate that? I hate.
- 12:07Speaker 3: I'm so used to it at this point.
- 12:09Speaker 2: I hate hearing the sound of my own voice.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I don't like seeing myself on camera, but I don't
- 12:12Speaker 3: mind listening to myself.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Okay, that's interesting. I feel like I'm the opposite. Like
- 12:16Speaker 2: I know I'm ugly, but like I don't need to
- 12:18Speaker 2: hear the sound of my own voice.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I don't need it shoved in my face. The weird thing,
- 12:24Speaker 1: I don't hate it. People sometimes be like, oh, you
- 12:27Speaker 1: have a good radio voice, Like, oh, yeah, I can
- 12:28Speaker 1: tell you're on the radio.
- 12:29Speaker 3: The voice.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I don't hear it. I don't think I have a
- 12:31Speaker 1: bad voice. I don't think I have like this great
- 12:33Speaker 1: radio voice. So I don't mind hearing it. But I
- 12:36Speaker 1: don't think I hear it the way other people hear it.
- 12:37Speaker 2: I don't think anybody does. So I don't think you
- 12:39Speaker 2: hear your voice the way anybody else does. No, that's
- 12:43Speaker 2: a one of those things.
- 12:44Speaker 3: By the way, Canada tied the game.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Ah Man, Canada, Canada. I was just watching that. We're
- 12:49Speaker 2: talking about the Olympic hockey. I was just watching that
- 12:53Speaker 2: just before we started the show. And Czech Republic or
- 12:56Speaker 2: check you or whatever they're called. Now that they were
- 12:58Speaker 2: hanging in there like it wasn't just like, oh they
- 13:00Speaker 2: got a couple of fluky goals that you know that
- 13:03Speaker 2: they were they were possessing the puck a little bit.
- 13:05Speaker 2: David Pasternok scored on the power play, So that game
- 13:09Speaker 2: is competitive. That that was a good game for like
- 13:12Speaker 2: the ten or so minutes I watched of it. Anyways,
- 13:14Speaker 2: back to football, So I heard myself on the open
- 13:18Speaker 2: give my my rant about this offseason, and I kind
- 13:22Speaker 2: of wrote down the same rant to do today. So
- 13:24Speaker 2: I'll try not to belabor the point too much. But
- 13:27Speaker 2: I think the one thing that I'm just looking at
- 13:29Speaker 2: with this offseason, and I've we're all a little bit
- 13:33Speaker 2: behind in terms of where we normally are this time
- 13:35Speaker 2: of year in terms of the draft and free agency.
- 13:37Speaker 2: So I have I I've looked at a lot of
- 13:39Speaker 2: people's five step plans, a lot of people's lists, a
- 13:44Speaker 2: lot of people's suggestions. They're all good. I'm not looking
- 13:47Speaker 2: down on anybody's lists or suggestions, nothing like that. But
- 13:50Speaker 2: the one thing that I keep coming back to with
- 13:52Speaker 2: all these alps, and I think we're on the same
- 13:54Speaker 2: page here. I feel like we're over complicating this offseason
- 13:58Speaker 2: a little bit like I feel like we're we're getting
- 14:01Speaker 2: a little too cute with it.
- 14:03Speaker 1: I think everybody's, you know, so used to what we
- 14:05Speaker 1: did the last few years of these like big pictures
- 14:08Speaker 1: of overhauls and.
- 14:09Speaker 2: So there is. They have forty one million dollars in
- 14:12Speaker 2: cap space, like forty and a half if you look
- 14:14Speaker 2: at over the cap I think miguil Pat's cap has
- 14:16Speaker 2: them around forty one. So let's just call it forty
- 14:18Speaker 2: plus million dollars in cap space. They are not in
- 14:21Speaker 2: any position where they need to start moving money around.
- 14:24Speaker 2: From an accounting standpoint. They have plenty of money. They
- 14:28Speaker 2: have plenty of flexibility from a you know, a financial
- 14:31Speaker 2: standpoint to basically do whatever they want this offseason to
- 14:34Speaker 2: make the roster better. Although they it's mostly on day
- 14:38Speaker 2: three that they have the surplus of picks, they also
- 14:40Speaker 2: have eleven draft picks. Now there's four to six rounders
- 14:43Speaker 2: which don't have a ton of value, but.
- 14:45Speaker 3: They have value in using them to move up.
- 14:47Speaker 2: They have one, two, three, and then they have two fours. Yeah,
- 14:50Speaker 2: so they have a decent amount of draft picks. They
- 14:53Speaker 2: have decent amount of capital in terms of both draft
- 14:56Speaker 2: and in terms of money and cap space if you're
- 14:59Speaker 2: into that sort of thing. So I see a lot
- 15:02Speaker 2: of these ideas, a lot of these plans that are
- 15:05Speaker 2: like restructure this guy, trade that guy because of the contract,
- 15:09Speaker 2: and you know, cut that guy because of the contract,
- 15:12Speaker 2: and this and that. I don't think they have to
- 15:14Speaker 2: do all that because they have forty one million dollars
- 15:16Speaker 2: in cap space, only six unrestricted free agents, and you're
- 15:20Speaker 2: not necessarily going to want to bring all of them back.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I think you want to bring most of them back
- 15:23Speaker 2: if you can. They have one RFA and Jack Gibbons,
- 15:26Speaker 2: who I think is an important against. Yeah, but I
- 15:30Speaker 2: don't think that would be I wouldn't put him in
- 15:32Speaker 2: the important category in terms of retaining Jack Gibbons. I
- 15:35Speaker 2: certainly would. The point is is that they have a
- 15:39Speaker 2: lot of flexibility heading into this offseason, so I don't
- 15:43Speaker 2: think it's that complex of what they need to do.
- 15:46Speaker 2: When I look at it, I see like four needs
- 15:48Speaker 2: that I feel like could be immediate sort of needs
- 15:52Speaker 2: that they either need a combination of starting caliber players
- 15:55Speaker 2: or talent upgrades at two starting caliber players that they
- 15:58Speaker 2: already have on the roster, and then the other ones
- 16:01Speaker 2: are maybe more developmental like right tackle. You know, I
- 16:05Speaker 2: still think tight end is a need, but Hunter Henry
- 16:09Speaker 2: is going to be here and he's going to be
- 16:11Speaker 2: a solid tight end for them in twenty six. So
- 16:14Speaker 2: like we're really talking about either really adding to that
- 16:17Speaker 2: room to make that room a difference making room, or
- 16:21Speaker 2: we're talking long term in terms of developmental play.
- 16:24Speaker 4: Right.
- 16:24Speaker 2: I don't think that they're in a position where you
- 16:26Speaker 2: put their depth chart up on a whiteboard and there's
- 16:28Speaker 2: nobody there for tight end and there they have to
- 16:31Speaker 2: draft somebody, right or they have to sign somebody. So
- 16:35Speaker 2: we'll get to all those But what's your what's your
- 16:37Speaker 2: take just in terms of the big picture, because like
- 16:40Speaker 2: I said, I keep seeing all these ones where it's
- 16:42Speaker 2: like they gotta cut digs or they gotta move this
- 16:44Speaker 2: guy or move that guy, and I don't think it's
- 16:46Speaker 2: that common.
- 16:46Speaker 3: But the digs one's a little more complicated to me.
- 16:49Speaker 1: He's the one guy that is kind of, you know,
- 16:51Speaker 1: a pivot point.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Probably not going to play.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I don't think really benefits either side from the play
- 16:58Speaker 1: under his contract the way it's currently constituted. If I
- 17:00Speaker 1: understand this contract correctly, which I might not, but you know,
- 17:06Speaker 1: it's some money is going to have to be moved around.
- 17:08Speaker 1: If he now wants extra years, You're going to commit
- 17:11Speaker 1: extra years to a thirty two year old receiver. You
- 17:14Speaker 1: know what happens at that point. That's the one that's complicated.
- 17:17Speaker 1: But for the most part, I'm with you, like, I
- 17:20Speaker 1: don't think this is an offseason where they need to
- 17:22Speaker 1: reinvent the wheel. You don't want to be complacent either,
- 17:26Speaker 1: And this is to me, the challenge of this offseason
- 17:29Speaker 1: is finding the happy medium between you just got to
- 17:32Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. Don't change up the mac and cheese
- 17:35Speaker 1: too much. Right, You've built a core, in a young
- 17:37Speaker 1: core that worked. But also you don't want to be
- 17:39Speaker 1: complacent and be the twenty two Bengals and be like, well,
- 17:43Speaker 1: all right, you know this group got us this far.
- 17:45Speaker 1: We'll just count on internal growth and boom will be
- 17:47Speaker 1: off and running from there. No, you still want to
- 17:49Speaker 1: continue to add because everybody else around you is going
- 17:51Speaker 1: to get better as well. So I think that's targeted editions.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I think that's in a few spots. You know, if
- 17:57Speaker 1: we're talking about starters, like you said, left guard, wide receiver,
- 18:02Speaker 1: if they move on from Diggs, I would like to
- 18:04Speaker 1: see them at a higher end tight end two, because
- 18:07Speaker 1: we know what McDaniels can do with the two tight
- 18:10Speaker 1: end packages, and that could be a rookie that could
- 18:11Speaker 1: be a developmental player that like has a little bit
- 18:13Speaker 1: of a higher floor too. You know, if they use
- 18:15Speaker 1: top one hundred pick on a tight end, I could
- 18:17Speaker 1: totally see that.
- 18:18Speaker 5: You know.
- 18:19Speaker 1: On defense, to me, it's another linebacker, and maybe that's
- 18:22Speaker 1: not like a starter starter, but a strong situational player,
- 18:26Speaker 1: like a true third down coverage guy, coverage Jase another safety,
- 18:29Speaker 1: so they can get into some of those three safety sets.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Obviously if they you know, if Jalen Hawkins leaves, then
- 18:33Speaker 1: you have to add another safety and then and then
- 18:37Speaker 1: corner is one where they really don't have much depth
- 18:40Speaker 1: beyond Christian Zalz and Carlton Davis. Carlton Davis is in
- 18:42Speaker 1: the last year of guaranteed money on his contract. Assuming
- 18:46Speaker 1: they pay Christian Zalez, which they should, You're probably gonna
- 18:48Speaker 1: want to look at somebody on the other side who's
- 18:50Speaker 1: on a rookie deal. So maybe getting that guy in
- 18:52Speaker 1: now two birds with one stone, that's I mean, that's
- 18:55Speaker 1: where I look at like somewhat significant to somewhat significant edition. Yeah,
- 19:00Speaker 1: you know, and then right the developmental right tackle like
- 19:03Speaker 1: you mentioned.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Yeah, So like I would put corner, i'd put linebacker obviously,
- 19:08Speaker 2: we just we've been mentioning right tackle. I put those
- 19:11Speaker 2: in the developmental category because you're not going to need
- 19:15Speaker 2: to draft a corner.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I think linebacker is a little more in developmental. Well,
- 19:19Speaker 1: there are a certain kind of linebackers.
- 19:20Speaker 2: I just think the issue with not the issue, but
- 19:22Speaker 2: the thing with linebacker is like they only really play
- 19:25Speaker 2: two linebackers, so you need three as like sort of
- 19:29Speaker 2: a rotation.
- 19:30Speaker 1: So I think that that like third down coverage spot
- 19:35Speaker 1: next to splane, we're essentially talking about upgrading on Christianelles,
- 19:38Speaker 1: which is a spot I think that they can upgrade.
- 19:41Speaker 1: You haven't gotten to some of these guys in the
- 19:43Speaker 1: draft yet, I'm assuming because you said you've only done
- 19:46Speaker 1: thirty one most of these guys or day two picks,
- 19:48Speaker 1: because it's just linebacker.
- 19:49Speaker 2: It's been dec you feel like we've been we've been
- 19:53Speaker 2: spinning the tires on the coverage. They need.
- 19:56Speaker 1: They need a coverage linebacker, they need a guy that
- 19:58Speaker 1: cover tight ends. I'm telling you, when you get to
- 19:59Speaker 1: these guys in the Jacob Rodriguez, Kyle Lewis, Harold Perkins,
- 20:03Speaker 1: You'll see where I'm coming from. Like adding that guy
- 20:06Speaker 1: who's gonna you said it's two spots, you can upgrade
- 20:09Speaker 1: the spot in nexus plane. That's a spot I think
- 20:11Speaker 1: they can upgrade. I don't think they have to break
- 20:13Speaker 1: their back to upgrade. And that's somewhere where you know,
- 20:16Speaker 1: the last two years, the last three years, it's been
- 20:19Speaker 1: they need eighteen to twenty starters, and you just need
- 20:22Speaker 1: guys that are gonna go out and play the majority
- 20:23Speaker 1: of the snaps. They have most of that covered, where
- 20:28Speaker 1: now there's now more flexibility to talk about some not
- 20:34Speaker 1: necessarily luxury ads, but like, Okay, this guy's probably only
- 20:37Speaker 1: gonna play on third downs, but he's gonna be really
- 20:40Speaker 1: good at playing on third downs. He's gonna give you
- 20:42Speaker 1: a chess piece. When you don't even have most of
- 20:44Speaker 1: your starting defense, you're not really in position to talk
- 20:47Speaker 1: about adding like some fun third down.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Get grade of linebackers enough.
- 20:51Speaker 1: They can now do that, and that's a you know,
- 20:53Speaker 1: I wouldn't hate if they prioritize that because I think
- 20:55Speaker 1: they have the flexibility on defense to do it. And again,
- 20:58Speaker 1: if they can get like a really high level coverage
- 21:00Speaker 1: slash pass rushing linebacker, which I think there's a handful
- 21:04Speaker 1: of in this draft. Like give zak kor chess piece,
- 21:08Speaker 1: give them some guys you can have fun.
- 21:09Speaker 2: So I have a I think we're kind of on
- 21:13Speaker 2: the same wavelength here. I just maybe looked at it
- 21:15Speaker 2: a little bit differently when we get to safety, which
- 21:17Speaker 2: we can talk about here in a second. But I
- 21:19Speaker 2: want to start with I think the big three needs,
- 21:22Speaker 2: and then we can get to some of these other ones. Uh,
- 21:25Speaker 2: the number one, I don't even necessarily know if he's
- 21:27Speaker 2: are an order. I just kind of wrote him down.
- 21:29Speaker 2: I don't think that there needs to be an order.
- 21:31Speaker 2: I don't really think that how they go about it
- 21:35Speaker 2: is not an order thing like they you know what
- 21:37Speaker 2: I mean, it's these three things need to be addressed
- 21:39Speaker 2: at some point in the offseason. I'll just start with
- 21:42Speaker 2: the offensive line, you know. I think in general, they
- 21:45Speaker 2: probably have five guys they feel pretty good about from
- 21:49Speaker 2: the line last year that are all under contract going
- 21:52Speaker 2: into next season that they could bring the whole group back,
- 21:54Speaker 2: but they need upgrades. I think they need better, not
- 21:57Speaker 2: necessarily that they don't have five starters kind of like
- 22:00Speaker 2: what you were saying about off seasons of past where
- 22:03Speaker 2: they don't feel like they have five starting caliber players.
- 22:06Speaker 2: This is now more how can you upgrade on the
- 22:09Speaker 2: talent that you currently have in those positions? Now. The
- 22:12Speaker 2: one thing I'll say about that, I feel myself being
- 22:17Speaker 2: kind of done with the rookie lineman because they have
- 22:22Speaker 2: two guys and Jared Wilson and Will Campbell and if
- 22:24Speaker 2: you want to throw Marcus Bryant as like a flyer
- 22:27Speaker 2: there that are sort of your young developing you know,
- 22:31Speaker 2: highly drafted in the cases of Campbell and even Wilson
- 22:34Speaker 2: as a top one hundred pick, they kind of have
- 22:36Speaker 2: those guys already. Yeah, they kind of did that already,
- 22:40Speaker 2: So when I look at it, I think it's really difficult.
- 22:44Speaker 1: As on Wilson though, like are you keeping him left?
- 22:48Speaker 1: CARDI moving him to see?
- 22:49Speaker 2: Well, I'll get to that. So my big picture thought
- 22:52Speaker 2: on the line is that we just saw two rookies
- 22:56Speaker 2: kind of get thrown to the wolves and go through
- 22:57Speaker 2: the gauntlet of playing an entire rookie seas in as
- 23:00Speaker 2: starters in the NFL. It's really hard to do, and
- 23:04Speaker 2: rookie linemen developed a little bit slower than some other positions.
- 23:07Speaker 2: It's a position that takes time to add not only
- 23:11Speaker 2: technique to your game, but all you know, NFL caliber technique,
- 23:14Speaker 2: but also play strength to your game that's at the
- 23:16Speaker 2: NFL level. So all these things are a long witted
- 23:20Speaker 2: way of saying, if you are expecting to be competing
- 23:24Speaker 2: for championships again next year, I don't know if drafting
- 23:27Speaker 2: a left guard in the top one hundred to try
- 23:30Speaker 2: to do this whole thing again with another rookie in there,
- 23:34Speaker 2: and now you're basically starting if all goes well, you're
- 23:37Speaker 2: starting three players on the line that are all second
- 23:40Speaker 2: year or rookie players. Right, You're gonna have three young
- 23:43Speaker 2: guys on the line again. Now that might be worth
- 23:46Speaker 2: it in the long run, like you're four or five
- 23:48Speaker 2: of that, you might have like what the Dallas Cowboys built,
- 23:51Speaker 2: and you might have a juggernaut offensive line. But that
- 23:54Speaker 2: I think is getting a little bit too ahead of ourselves.
- 23:57Speaker 2: So I'm far more interested in this kind of goes
- 23:59Speaker 2: to your Jared Wilson question. I'm more interested in going
- 24:03Speaker 2: out and signing or acquiring. It doesn't have to be
- 24:05Speaker 2: a free agent acquiring a solid to good veteran left guard,
- 24:12Speaker 2: like somebody that we really wanted them to get last offseason,
- 24:15Speaker 2: and they never did. You know, they didn't. They didn't
- 24:18Speaker 2: do the two anything they could have. I don't want
- 24:20Speaker 2: to keep on beating a dead horse with that. They
- 24:22Speaker 2: could have done that.
- 24:22Speaker 1: So ironically, the pick they would have had to trade
- 24:25Speaker 1: would have been Craig Woods being their best rookie se.
- 24:28Speaker 2: So yeah, you know whatever, but it probably isn't going
- 24:32Speaker 2: to be a player Joe Tuni's caliber, because those guys
- 24:34Speaker 2: don't just grow on trees, you know, probably a future
- 24:37Speaker 2: Hall of Famer. I like Edwards, but David Edwards is
- 24:40Speaker 2: a good one. I think that's uh that that's a
- 24:42Speaker 2: solid one. The kid from the guy from the Steelers
- 24:44Speaker 2: who I'm going to blank on his name right now.
- 24:47Speaker 2: I'll have it on a list here. In a second,
- 24:49Speaker 2: I thought that that's another good option. You know, these
- 24:53Speaker 2: guys are out there. They That's not a position where
- 24:56Speaker 2: teams typically lock every buddy down, right, you know, like
- 25:01Speaker 2: even like Tyler Linderbaum, who's the center, might hit unrestardedal
- 25:06Speaker 2: solid player, veteran guy been around. Uh, maybe a little
- 25:10Speaker 2: bit more of a run blocker, like a little bit
- 25:12Speaker 2: more of that nasty run blocking ability. Edward's kind of
- 25:15Speaker 2: the same thing, you know, part of an offensive line
- 25:17Speaker 2: in Buffalo last year that at the number one ranked
- 25:19Speaker 2: run offense in football. You know, so you add a
- 25:22Speaker 2: little bit more of that physicality, you add a little
- 25:24Speaker 2: bit more of that experience. Uh, they're both you know,
- 25:27Speaker 2: I I think I looked up to They're both wider
- 25:30Speaker 2: guys too, which is something that I think is important
- 25:33Speaker 2: to put next to Campbell is somebody that's a little
- 25:36Speaker 2: bit more of a wider bodied and takes up a
- 25:38Speaker 2: little bit more space there to try to help, you know,
- 25:41Speaker 2: expand the surface there that they have to protect. I
- 25:45Speaker 2: think that that's the move that I would make, and
- 25:48Speaker 2: it's one like to me, it's one guy that I'm
- 25:51Speaker 2: looking at in terms of the immediate right's sign one
- 25:54Speaker 2: interior offensive lineman that can start next year that's a
- 25:58Speaker 2: plug and play starter. And then I do think that
- 26:00Speaker 2: Jared Wilson is vying for center. Now does he get
- 26:04Speaker 2: handed the center job? Does he compete with Garrett Bradbury
- 26:07Speaker 2: in camp for center? You know that I think remains
- 26:10Speaker 2: a little bit to be seen. I would probably have
- 26:12Speaker 2: them compete for it, But maybe they have too much
- 26:15Speaker 2: respect for Garrett Bradbury.
- 26:16Speaker 1: To do that with him own when who had that
- 26:18Speaker 1: kind of remember his second year he kind of ended
- 26:20Speaker 1: up in a reter year because it's just the odd
- 26:22Speaker 1: man out and maybe, you know, changing positions a year
- 26:25Speaker 1: off would give Jared Wilson some help and let him
- 26:27Speaker 1: truly develop there.
- 26:28Speaker 3: So I'm not against that, but I'm with you.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I just also think again, having a veteran next to Campbell,
- 26:33Speaker 1: and if Wilson's at center, having a veteran between those
- 26:36Speaker 1: two young guys just winds up a lot better than
- 26:40Speaker 1: having a rookie in there as well.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Because you have Campbell left whoever they sign or trade
- 26:45Speaker 2: for whatever at left guard.
- 26:46Speaker 3: What about a Dalton Reisner.
- 26:49Speaker 2: He hasn't been as good lately. He's kind of slown
- 26:51Speaker 2: down in his career.
- 26:52Speaker 6: You know.
- 26:52Speaker 2: The other one I kind of thought about is Vera Tucker,
- 26:54Speaker 2: who I think is a really talent.
- 26:55Speaker 3: He's coming off for pretty significant injury.
- 26:57Speaker 2: He's hurt all the time.
- 26:58Speaker 7: You know.
- 26:59Speaker 2: David Edwards is a good one. Tomallow from the Steelers
- 27:02Speaker 2: is a good one. But those two guys are gonna
- 27:04Speaker 2: be pretty highly coveted. I would assume if they hit
- 27:07Speaker 2: unrestricted free agency because of their steadiness. You know, we'll
- 27:11Speaker 2: see if anybody else, you know, wiggles free from trade.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Like I mentioned, you know, Joe Tooney got traded last year,
- 27:17Speaker 2: it's possible that somebody could all it's always possible that
- 27:20Speaker 2: a trade could materialize. But Campbell at left tackle, new
- 27:25Speaker 2: player at left guard, you know, veteran player at left guard,
- 27:29Speaker 2: Jared Wilson or Bradbury at center on when who moses
- 27:34Speaker 2: it just feels like you're going young player veteran, young player, veteran.
- 27:37Speaker 2: You're kind of spacing it out a little bit more.
- 27:40Speaker 2: I think what we saw in the Super Bowl is
- 27:42Speaker 2: that Seattle just said you had two rookies on the
- 27:44Speaker 2: left side. We're just gonna hammer the left side, Nie,
- 27:47Speaker 2: And now at least you're able to space that out
- 27:49Speaker 2: a little bit more and not make you yourself so
- 27:52Speaker 2: vulnerable to something like that come playoff time and against
- 27:56Speaker 2: the good defenses. So I'm not overhauling it. I'm not
- 28:00Speaker 2: We're not doing five new starters, three new starters. We're
- 28:03Speaker 2: not moving Campbell all around creation. I'm not doing that yet.
- 28:07Speaker 2: But I do think that signing that one solid veteran
- 28:10Speaker 2: guard could settle the whole thing down a little.
- 28:12Speaker 1: I think you do that, and then you try to
- 28:14Speaker 1: get you know, day two of the draft a project
- 28:18Speaker 1: right tackle, a developmental right tackle to work on behind
- 28:21Speaker 1: Campbell along with Marcus Bryant.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Yep, exactly should be and then look, you.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Want to take another guard or tackle on day three
- 28:28Speaker 1: just to bolst the depth.
- 28:30Speaker 3: You can never have enough offensive line.
- 28:31Speaker 2: I'm always drafting offensive lineman. Yeah, especially you know you
- 28:34Speaker 2: have four six round picks. You know one of those
- 28:37Speaker 2: is going to be alignment. You know that, Yeah, where
- 28:40Speaker 2: it is.
- 28:40Speaker 1: And there's some good guard value deeper in this draft. So, like,
- 28:44Speaker 1: you know, if Mike because they got to rework Mic
- 28:46Speaker 1: when winners contract, probably like you know, if that ends
- 28:48Speaker 1: up being a short term thing and you want to
- 28:50Speaker 1: start getting the next guy ready there right, something like that.
- 28:53Speaker 1: But you know, in the top one hundred, I don't
- 28:56Speaker 1: they could. They could get a starting guard.
- 28:57Speaker 3: In the top one hundred, certainly.
- 28:59Speaker 1: I just think it's better allocation resources because even if
- 29:01Speaker 1: you're paying you mentioned that that Simalu and Edwards are
- 29:09Speaker 1: going to get like top of the market money for guard.
- 29:11Speaker 1: That's top of the market money for a guard right right.
- 29:13Speaker 1: You know, even if you're paying top of the market
- 29:15Speaker 1: at that position, it's not the same drain that paying
- 29:18Speaker 1: top of the market for corner or a wide receiver
- 29:20Speaker 1: an edge rusher is.
- 29:21Speaker 2: So I just feel like I keep coming back to, Yeah,
- 29:26Speaker 2: you could maybe theoretically upgrade the talent of a player
- 29:29Speaker 2: or a ceiling of a player with a rookie, but
- 29:32Speaker 2: I think you're going to have the same rookie growing
- 29:34Speaker 2: paints that you just had with Campbell and Wilson. So
- 29:37Speaker 2: in a way, yeah, like maybe the long term is better,
- 29:39Speaker 2: you know, like I said earlier, three to five years
- 29:42Speaker 2: from now, maybe you have a better outlook with that player.
- 29:44Speaker 2: But when they were humming, and I know we always
- 29:47Speaker 2: do this and we always compare it to the Dynasty,
- 29:49Speaker 2: but when they're not, when they were humming, they had
- 29:52Speaker 2: these guys waiting in the wings for when the older
- 29:55Speaker 2: players moving. And that that's what I want to get
- 29:57Speaker 2: back to. I want to draft somebody that doesn't isn't
- 30:00Speaker 2: thrust into you know, Jared Wilson was drafted in the
- 30:02Speaker 2: third round. He probably shouldn't have been started, and they.
- 30:05Speaker 3: Drafted him to play center.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Elliott Well said it after the draft they just Cole
- 30:08Speaker 1: Strange shouldn't work out.
- 30:10Speaker 3: Ben Brown.
- 30:11Speaker 1: I guess they thought didn't win the drive then who
- 30:13Speaker 1: what was the name we were retired remember in the spring?
- 30:16Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 30:16Speaker 1: Yeah, they had brought a completely different guard in, like
- 30:19Speaker 1: journeyman guy who retired?
- 30:21Speaker 3: Is it nuts?
- 30:22Speaker 1: I kind of feel the same about wide receiver too,
- 30:24Speaker 1: Like I don't want them to be so.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Overwhelmingly young on offense. I think that kind of showed
- 30:28Speaker 3: up in the.
- 30:29Speaker 1: Super Bowl, and you know, we'll see who ultimately hits
- 30:32Speaker 1: the market. George Pickens, Alec Pearce. I'm kind of out
- 30:35Speaker 1: on Mike Evans. I think he's too old. I think
- 30:37Speaker 1: you go too far the other way. But you know,
- 30:39Speaker 1: even if it's a guy like aj Brown in a trade, Yeah,
- 30:43Speaker 1: if they move on from Diggs, I believe mac Hollins
- 30:46Speaker 1: is our only wide receiver who's not on a rookie contract.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Yeah, Like that's well, I mean yeah, but like Pop
- 30:51Speaker 2: and Booty are going into year four, it's.
- 30:53Speaker 1: I guess, but like getting somebody who's been more of
- 30:55Speaker 1: a veteran at that high level instead of putting another
- 30:57Speaker 1: rookie into that mix.
- 30:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel less strongly about it.
- 31:01Speaker 1: If they end up with with Conception Own or Boston
- 31:04Speaker 1: or one of these guys, Like, I could see how
- 31:06Speaker 1: that works, but I kind of outside of that right
- 31:08Speaker 1: tackle because the developmental players later in the draft. I
- 31:12Speaker 1: kind of want to see him get veteran additions on offense.
- 31:15Speaker 2: So a wide receiver. This was my take, and maybe
- 31:17Speaker 2: we're we also are kind of saying the same things
- 31:19Speaker 2: again here.
- 31:20Speaker 3: What were we talking about right before that? There's something
- 31:22Speaker 3: I wanted to look up.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Oh, the offensive lineman that retired's flanking on I that
- 31:28Speaker 2: that has happened so many times in our time cover.
- 31:30Speaker 3: This was weird because they signed him.
- 31:32Speaker 2: I can't remember which one it is.
- 31:34Speaker 1: They signed him, and we were all like, oh, that's
- 31:36Speaker 1: a you know, he's a camp body, hasn't really he
- 31:38Speaker 1: hadn't played in like two years, wes Schweitzer, Weswitz. And
- 31:41Speaker 1: then we get out in the spring and he's the
- 31:42Speaker 1: starting left guard and we're like, oh, all right, I
- 31:45Speaker 1: guess it's his job to lose. And then he retired
- 31:48Speaker 1: the day after mini camp.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:50Speaker 3: Yeah, so it was weird that that's what I didn't
- 31:53Speaker 3: a big nck climber too.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Ain't another veteran body at guard like I just want
- 31:57Speaker 2: somebody that plug ing play left guard. Let's get everybody
- 32:02Speaker 2: kind of situated on that line. Let's get Jared Wilson
- 32:04Speaker 2: back to repping at center, and I think that's his
- 32:07Speaker 2: best long term future, but you know, lasting on the line.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Then we'll go to the wide receivers. When I watched
- 32:14Speaker 2: their tape and I think this is you know, I
- 32:16Speaker 2: don't have to be an expert or anything to not
- 32:19Speaker 2: rocket science, but when you looked at Jared Wilson and
- 32:22Speaker 2: Will Campbell next to each other, it was just not
- 32:25Speaker 2: a lot of mass over there on that side of
- 32:27Speaker 2: the line, Like it's too kind of you know, Wilson's
- 32:29Speaker 2: kind of built more like a center, Campbell's built a
- 32:32Speaker 2: little bit more like a guard. They're both kind of
- 32:34Speaker 2: narrow in terms of their body types. So there just
- 32:38Speaker 2: wasn't a lot of power and not a lot of
- 32:40Speaker 2: people moving strength over on that side. I think Campbell
- 32:43Speaker 2: would be a lot better off if he was next
- 32:46Speaker 2: to somebody that that could move some bodies, Like it
- 32:48Speaker 2: doesn't necessarily need to be a three hundred and forty
- 32:51Speaker 2: pound guard like Mike Onwenu, but just someone that has
- 32:54Speaker 2: some play strength to him, some size to him maybe
- 32:57Speaker 2: a bit a little bit of a bigger guard. And
- 32:59Speaker 2: I think in a lot of ways, even though I
- 33:01Speaker 2: would like to keep this player as a super sub, like,
- 33:04Speaker 2: it's kind of why Ben Brown worked a little bit
- 33:06Speaker 2: better at times in that spot because he's just bigger,
- 33:09Speaker 2: Like He's just literally bigger, like the measurables are just bigger.
- 33:12Speaker 2: And I think that you did see that, you know,
- 33:15Speaker 2: team's caving in that side of the line. Teams bowl
- 33:17Speaker 2: rushing that side of the line consistently the games that
- 33:21Speaker 2: they would run over there, There's a lot of power
- 33:23Speaker 2: that they would bring to the table on those and
- 33:25Speaker 2: it just seemed like they were just trying to overwhelm
- 33:28Speaker 2: to young players with sheer power. And I would like
- 33:31Speaker 2: to try to break that up a little bit and
- 33:33Speaker 2: also help Campbell out a little bit by putting a
- 33:36Speaker 2: wider body there next to him on the wide receivers.
- 33:40Speaker 2: So I'm just talking strictly football, and this kind of
- 33:42Speaker 2: goes back to my beginning take. I'm seeing a lot
- 33:47Speaker 2: of Stefan Diggs isn't worth it for twenty six million
- 33:51Speaker 2: dollar cap hit. I'm not talking about the guaranteed money
- 33:54Speaker 2: and how the contract is structured and Woody or wouldn't
- 33:58Speaker 2: he play for that deal? And what I'm talking about
- 34:00Speaker 2: all that just strictly the cap pit. If you think
- 34:03Speaker 2: Stefan Diggs is still a contributing football player, a good
- 34:07Speaker 2: football player, his twenty six million dollar cap it should
- 34:10Speaker 2: not be a conversation. I'm sorry, this is a team
- 34:12Speaker 2: that has forty one million dollars in cap space.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Well, doesn't he also have like no guaranteed money?
- 34:17Speaker 2: He has like a little bit of guaranteed money this
- 34:19Speaker 2: year and none going.
- 34:20Speaker 1: He's probably gonna want more guaranteed money. Like you still
- 34:23Speaker 1: need to rework his deal.
- 34:24Speaker 2: It Maybe I don't know, Like I don't know like
- 34:28Speaker 2: what he's going to get if he likes the situation,
- 34:31Speaker 2: what's really going to be available to him. He's under
- 34:33Speaker 2: contract with the Patriots, which gives the Patriots a lot
- 34:35Speaker 2: of leverage and a lot of control in this situation.
- 34:39Speaker 2: My only point really is just you know, getting down
- 34:42Speaker 2: to brass tacks and not the minutia stuff of it.
- 34:45Speaker 2: If you think that he's still a contributing player and
- 34:49Speaker 2: is still a thousand yard receiver like we saw last year,
- 34:53Speaker 2: then I don't I don't know why we're getting so
- 34:56Speaker 2: caught up in the twenty six million dollar capet. I
- 34:59Speaker 2: don't know why that's such a actor in this equation.
- 35:01Speaker 2: And I'm not talking about anything going on off the field,
- 35:05Speaker 2: so just strictly football wise, if it was up to me,
- 35:08Speaker 2: I am keeping Steffan Diggs and I am pairing Stefan
- 35:12Speaker 2: Diggs with an upgraded outside receiver, you know, somebody that
- 35:16Speaker 2: can really uh win one on ones on the outside,
- 35:20Speaker 2: tilt coverage to the outside. You know, we talked so
- 35:22Speaker 2: much about coverage dictating receivers. Diggs became that this year
- 35:26Speaker 2: for the Patriots. But then that was kind of it,
- 35:29Speaker 2: like once they took away Digs right there.
- 35:31Speaker 3: Passing, he commanded the double, but he couldn't beat the double, and.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Then nobody else really won right in other areas. And
- 35:37Speaker 2: I'm not saying ever, like you know, on occasion Kisehon
- 35:39Speaker 2: Booty did against Houston.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Certain well to hear the MATC guy, did you see
- 35:43Speaker 1: the metrics of Pop Douglas in the Super Bowl.
- 35:45Speaker 2: He was separating a lot in that game. They couldn't
- 35:47Speaker 2: get him the ball, and that goes back to point
- 35:49Speaker 2: number one about the offensive line. But I think the
- 35:53Speaker 2: biggest thing to me, uh is thinking a little bit
- 35:57Speaker 2: about skill sets and what pair together and all that
- 36:01Speaker 2: kind of stuff. I watch both the first round guys
- 36:04Speaker 2: that might be in the Patriots range. I really liked
- 36:06Speaker 2: your guy Casey conceptsi on and you would now does
- 36:09Speaker 2: he make sense with with Diggs? You know not he
- 36:13Speaker 2: makes sense on the.
- 36:15Speaker 8: Now.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Denzel Boston, on the other hand, makes a lot more
- 36:18Speaker 2: sense if they're trying to pair somebody on the outside.
- 36:21Speaker 2: I would also say, like Alec Pierce fits that mold
- 36:23Speaker 2: if he hits free agency. You know, Aj Brown certainly
- 36:26Speaker 2: does in a trade. But looking for that guy that
- 36:29Speaker 2: when he's one on one on the outside wins. Maybe
- 36:32Speaker 2: he gets the safety you know, to hedge over the
- 36:35Speaker 2: top of that side of the field. Maybe just thinking
- 36:37Speaker 2: about it logistically, like how much that could open up
- 36:40Speaker 2: space in the middle of the field for Stefan Diggs.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Like now, if Diggs is not seeing all this cut
- 36:45Speaker 2: or robber coverage and the safety's coming down and taking
- 36:48Speaker 2: away all those option routes and things like that, and
- 36:50Speaker 2: the brackets that he saw in the playoffs, if all
- 36:53Speaker 2: that stuff goes away because you have Alan Pearce or
- 36:56Speaker 2: Aj Brown on the outside, that they can't just one
- 36:58Speaker 2: on one cover the tire game. That now changes the deck, right,
- 37:03Speaker 2: Like we're shuffled the deck. So I'm far more interested
- 37:06Speaker 2: in keeping digs. If you want to put like a
- 37:08Speaker 2: number to it, I know people like doing that, Like
- 37:10Speaker 2: I would really kind of make Stefan Diggs like, you're
- 37:13Speaker 2: inside wide receiver two, you're a chain mover, You're a
- 37:17Speaker 2: possession receiver on the inside that we know flourishes in
- 37:20Speaker 2: an offense like this, and then go out there and
- 37:22Speaker 2: get an upgraded outside receiver. No disrespect meant to Kayshawn
- 37:26Speaker 2: Boody or Matt Collins. I just think you might be
- 37:29Speaker 2: able to do a little bit better. And that doesn't
- 37:30Speaker 2: mean that those guys don't have roles or don't have
- 37:33Speaker 2: spots on the team. It just might not be the
- 37:36Speaker 2: number one and number two wide receivers in terms of
- 37:39Speaker 2: snaps and targets and all that kind of stuff outside
- 37:41Speaker 2: of digs. So that's my take on receivers. I mentioned
- 37:44Speaker 2: a couple of names. We can talk a little bit
- 37:45Speaker 2: more about Boston since he's a draft guy and people
- 37:49Speaker 2: might not be as familiar with him as some of
- 37:51Speaker 2: the guys that are already in the league. But I'm
- 37:54Speaker 2: looking at it a little bit from like a skill
- 37:56Speaker 2: set standpoint too. I don't want to be redundant. I
- 37:59Speaker 2: also so I want to have like an outside guy.
- 38:02Speaker 3: This piece off. It's not about collecting talent, it's about
- 38:04Speaker 3: building a team.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's what I would do at receiver if
- 38:07Speaker 2: I had my Now, whatever happens with Diggs happens with Diggs,
- 38:10Speaker 2: and they have to move on from Diggs, then that's
- 38:12Speaker 2: a different story. But just strictly talking football, I would
- 38:16Speaker 2: much rather see them hold on to Diggs and pair
- 38:18Speaker 2: him with somebody that's complimentary to him, and maybe that
- 38:21Speaker 2: really opens up your passing game now beyond just Drake
- 38:24Speaker 2: May being awesome. Yeah, what do you like about Denzel Boston?
- 38:29Speaker 2: Are you Denzel Boston guy? Are you in?
- 38:31Speaker 9: I am?
- 38:32Speaker 3: I'm curious how he's gonna test.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, when you get those big outside guys,
- 38:36Speaker 1: He's obviously not He's not gonna run a four to three,
- 38:38Speaker 1: but you want to make sure he has the speed
- 38:40Speaker 1: to command it. But no, he's a really good fifty
- 38:44Speaker 1: to fifty ball guy. I think he can separate. You know,
- 38:48Speaker 1: he's not conception owned, but for a guy with that build,
- 38:51Speaker 1: he can separate love him in the run game all
- 38:54Speaker 1: of that. He's just that prototypical X and they've been
- 38:57Speaker 1: searching for that guy for a long time. We talked
- 39:01Speaker 1: about this off the air the other day, and I
- 39:02Speaker 1: think it's an interesting conversation, Like if you look at
- 39:07Speaker 1: it traditionally, Casey conception shewn as the Josh mctaniels receiver.
- 39:12Speaker 1: He is built in a lab to play for Josh
- 39:15Speaker 1: mctaniels and checks every box.
- 39:17Speaker 3: Right.
- 39:18Speaker 1: Denzel Boston is the guy that they always kind of
- 39:22Speaker 1: did without, Yeah, and they never really went and got
- 39:25Speaker 1: that big body outside guy, you know, made a significant
- 39:29Speaker 1: investment that player they brought it, you know, the sacrificial X.
- 39:32Speaker 1: We've talked about the guys they brought through because it
- 39:34Speaker 1: was never a big role in the offense. But Drake
- 39:38Speaker 1: may changes, like's throwing to these big body jumpall guys like, right,
- 39:43Speaker 1: and he's maybe not as committed to throwing to some
- 39:46Speaker 1: of these smaller guys. We've talked about this with Pop Douglas, right,
- 39:49Speaker 1: So we talked a lot about last year. Josh McDaniels
- 39:52Speaker 1: does agree he has his core concepts, but he does
- 39:54Speaker 1: a great job of tailoring what he does to the quarterback.
- 39:57Speaker 1: This is maybe the biggest conflict of that we've seen.
- 40:00Speaker 1: And so what wins out the guy that Josh mcdatt
- 40:03Speaker 1: is traditionally Josh McDaniels prototype, and in theory there is
- 40:05Speaker 1: room for both. But you're on the board of thirty one.
- 40:07Speaker 1: You can only pick one of them, and I, for
- 40:09Speaker 1: what it's with, I don't think I love the choice either.
- 40:10Speaker 1: There's a chance they're both gone by thirty one, certainly
- 40:13Speaker 1: one of them. But you know, does Josh McDaniels want
- 40:17Speaker 1: his speeds, his you know, shifty traditional slot guy or
- 40:21Speaker 1: is he gonna go out and get Drake made, the
- 40:23Speaker 1: big body outside guy and make it work with him.
- 40:25Speaker 1: So that'll kind of be the debate, the back and forth,
- 40:27Speaker 1: the pushing the poll. I like Boston, I just when
- 40:30Speaker 1: I initially looked at it, it's more like, Okay, well
- 40:33Speaker 1: that's not a Josh McDaniels receiver, right casey conception on
- 40:37Speaker 1: is But we're in a new era and and maybe he.
- 40:41Speaker 3: Is, like I think he's a I don't know.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Is is Ted McMillan a lazy comp He's not quite
- 40:48Speaker 1: as big as tet.
- 40:49Speaker 2: He's not He's not as athletic as tet righted was
- 40:51Speaker 2: so smooth and an added cuts, like he really runs
- 40:54Speaker 2: routes with a just a fluidity that's that's rare for
- 40:58Speaker 2: that size. I think that Denzel Boston, what I like
- 41:02Speaker 2: about him is that I can see a translatable role
- 41:06Speaker 2: kind of like how they've used Matt Collins in this
- 41:08Speaker 2: offense where it's outside it's some like condensed tight split
- 41:13Speaker 2: reps where he's technically you know, the outside receiver to
- 41:17Speaker 2: that side of the formation, but they're in tight to
- 41:19Speaker 2: the to the formation, so he's inside the numbers. So
- 41:22Speaker 2: it's kind of like a slot rep.
- 41:24Speaker 10: Uh.
- 41:24Speaker 2: He can block a little bit in the run game,
- 41:26Speaker 2: which I think, you know, we'll get to when we
- 41:28Speaker 2: start talking about tight ends. I think that's something that
- 41:30Speaker 2: needs to be talked about more. But the most important
- 41:33Speaker 2: thing is how he wins the ball down the field.
- 41:35Speaker 2: And I think sometimes when people hear that, they hear
- 41:40Speaker 2: fifty to fifty ball and they panic, They're like, not
- 41:41Speaker 2: Nikhil hay Right.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Everybody thinks, like, ironically, the real comp I have for Boston,
- 41:47Speaker 1: I don't because it's going to freak Patriots fans out,
- 41:49Speaker 1: but think Miami, Yeah, it's kind of like DeVante Parker,
- 41:53Speaker 1: a little bit like.
- 41:53Speaker 2: The version of the I would like to see how
- 41:56Speaker 2: he runs and all that, because I'm not I think
- 41:58Speaker 2: he has pretty good acceleration off the line. I don't
- 42:00Speaker 2: think he pulls away down the field, which is probably
- 42:03Speaker 2: going to hurt that forty.
- 42:04Speaker 3: But does he come up you know, hits in trouble
- 42:07Speaker 3: with press, which is kind of weird.
- 42:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:09Speaker 2: So that was the one thing that I would I
- 42:10Speaker 2: would point at in terms of issues. The other thing
- 42:13Speaker 2: I would just say about Boston that I really like
- 42:16Speaker 2: is just he, like I said, fifty to fifty balls
- 42:20Speaker 2: comes out and people freak out, like we don't want
- 42:22Speaker 2: another Nikhil Harriet.
- 42:23Speaker 3: I'd rather he just why does everything have to be contested?
- 42:26Speaker 10: Now?
- 42:26Speaker 2: He doesn't actually not everything with him is actually contested, right.
- 42:31Speaker 2: He only had thirteen contested targets last year the players
- 42:35Speaker 2: that lead the class and those stats are like thirty
- 42:38Speaker 2: plus contested targets. So he doesn't actually get targeted at
- 42:41Speaker 2: a high volume at on contested balls. And he's got
- 42:45Speaker 2: great hands and body control to win the ball down
- 42:47Speaker 2: the field and toward his body to make catch radius,
- 42:50Speaker 2: huge catch radius, very good in the red zone. These
- 42:54Speaker 2: are all things that when you have a quarterback like
- 42:57Speaker 2: Drake May who can kind of just put the ball
- 42:59Speaker 2: in a spot for the receiver to go get it,
- 43:01Speaker 2: and he has that kind of arm talent and that
- 43:04Speaker 2: kind of aggressiveness to just sort of lay it out
- 43:06Speaker 2: there for somebody. Denzel Boston is the type of guy
- 43:09Speaker 2: that comes down with it basically like ten out of
- 43:12Speaker 2: thirteen times last year, so like eighty five percent of
- 43:15Speaker 2: the time, which is the type of receiver that he is.
- 43:19Speaker 2: I mentioned, you know, the blocking stuff. Now, the one
- 43:21Speaker 2: thing that I would say on film that you just
- 43:23Speaker 2: mentioned was the press. Now I look at the press
- 43:26Speaker 2: stuff that he did struggle with as adding to his
- 43:31Speaker 2: repertoire of releases. I think it's a line of scrimmage issue,
- 43:34Speaker 2: not necessarily a speed issue, right. I just don't think
- 43:37Speaker 2: that he has a lot of movement laterally to get
- 43:41Speaker 2: guys off of him. I press.
- 43:43Speaker 1: It's like when you're six four to two ten in college,
- 43:44Speaker 1: you should just kind of be bull boring guys.
- 43:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I hear that. I think that would be the
- 43:49Speaker 2: one little concern. But I look at the way that
- 43:52Speaker 2: teams use receivers nowadays, and especially with all the condensed
- 43:56Speaker 2: formations that teams are utilizing now in the zone run
- 43:59Speaker 2: game and the boots and all this kind of stuff.
- 44:01Speaker 2: A lot of the exposure to just like outside receiver
- 44:06Speaker 2: press kind of gets mitigated by all that type of stuff,
- 44:08Speaker 2: So like, how much can you kind of protect Boston
- 44:11Speaker 2: even from that by alignment by formation, like where he's
- 44:15Speaker 2: going to play that sort of thing. Like I don't
- 44:18Speaker 2: look at Matt Collins as like a dynamic press winner,
- 44:22Speaker 2: you know, I don't think that he's necessarily great at that,
- 44:24Speaker 2: but he is good at kind of getting up the sideline,
- 44:27Speaker 2: finding space and sort of making himself available, which I
- 44:30Speaker 2: think is similar to Boston. So I just look at
- 44:33Speaker 2: Denzel Boston as like a souped up version of Matt Collins.
- 44:36Speaker 2: And given how successful Drake May was throwing to Mac
- 44:39Speaker 2: Collins this year, you can kind of see a vision
- 44:41Speaker 2: of how that could really work out for the Patriots
- 44:43Speaker 2: long run. You know, we mentioned Alex Pearce. I know,
- 44:46Speaker 2: he's kind of like the darling right now. I don't
- 44:49Speaker 2: want people to be disappointed if Alec Pierce gets tagged
- 44:52Speaker 2: gets extended into you, Like, I just am not ready
- 44:54Speaker 2: to say Alec pears is going to hit the open market.
- 44:57Speaker 2: The rest of the receivers in free agency are not great, Bob,
- 45:00Speaker 2: especially for the type of guy that we're talking about. Yeah,
- 45:03Speaker 2: so I wouldn't necessarily look there. Where are you on
- 45:06Speaker 2: George Pickens?
- 45:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I just I still don't trust he runs so
- 45:12Speaker 3: hot in gold.
- 45:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think if for somebody that's that inconsistent,
- 45:17Speaker 1: you don't need to pay that kind of money. When
- 45:19Speaker 1: he's on, he's on, he's fantastic, but he just isn't
- 45:23Speaker 1: consistently that guy. And I, you know, those players always
- 45:30Speaker 1: worry me. To me, he's like a really high in
- 45:31Speaker 1: number two, I don't think he's number one. You put
- 45:33Speaker 1: him next to guy like Seedee Lamb, he's great. I
- 45:37Speaker 1: don't know about him being the guy.
- 45:39Speaker 2: I worry about his his his effort, his compete level.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Just doesn't feel like a very able guy.
- 45:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:45Speaker 2: For all the things that you could probably say negatively
- 45:48Speaker 2: in terms of Stefan Diggs, no one ever questions Stefon
- 45:51Speaker 2: Diggs effort. That's never an issue with him. You know,
- 45:55Speaker 2: he has his wards, but that's never a problem with him.
- 45:59Speaker 2: So that's it's their different type of risk that in
- 46:02Speaker 2: this regard George Pickens flat out takes plays off like that.
- 46:05Speaker 2: That's the type of guy that we've seen him be
- 46:07Speaker 2: both in Pittsburgh and Dallas. That that would worry me
- 46:10Speaker 2: a lot, especially if you're gonna pay him the kind
- 46:12Speaker 2: of money that he's probably gonna get paid. He's gonna
- 46:14Speaker 2: have games where he goes off like he did in Dallas. Yeah, Pittsburgh,
- 46:17Speaker 2: Like he's gonna have these huge one hundred and fifty
- 46:19Speaker 2: plus yard games, multiple touchdowns, and you're gonna be like, Wow,
- 46:22Speaker 2: that guy's the best player on the field, and he's
- 46:24Speaker 2: gonna have other games where he just flat out quit right,
- 46:27Speaker 2: And I just don't know if that's really their type
- 46:28Speaker 2: of guy. Uh So, that's wide receiver, that's offensive line.
- 46:32Speaker 1: So any of these guys, you think there's maybe any
- 46:34Speaker 1: anything to diamond in the rough Juwan Jennings, Romeo Dobbs.
- 46:40Speaker 2: I thought about Romeo Dobbs. I like Romeo Dobbs, physical guy,
- 46:44Speaker 2: downfield player, can be like a big slot too at
- 46:48Speaker 2: times if you want him to do that sort of thing.
- 46:51Speaker 2: I like Romeo Dobbs. Now, isn't that just kind of
- 46:54Speaker 2: kish On Booty and Matt Collins.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Yeah, So that's like some people wonder like if you
- 46:58Speaker 1: get him out of Green Bay where they very much
- 47:00Speaker 1: just kind of spread the ball around as they're more
- 47:02Speaker 1: on tap potential there. But I'm with you, those are
- 47:04Speaker 1: just the two names I've for thrown out. I think
- 47:06Speaker 1: the same thing with Jawan Jennings.
- 47:07Speaker 2: I feel the same way about Romeo Dobbs as I
- 47:12Speaker 2: do about Holland's and Booty. Nice player, yeah, probably not
- 47:16Speaker 2: a true game changer or difference maker if they didn't
- 47:19Speaker 2: have those two guys under contract, Like if Booty was
- 47:21Speaker 2: in his free agent ear and they were resigned, Booty,
- 47:25Speaker 2: do you know Dobbs would be somebody that I have
- 47:28Speaker 2: on my list. Not saying I would be like a
- 47:30Speaker 2: hard pass. I just it's kind of redundant to this
- 47:33Speaker 2: skill set in the level of talent as those two
- 47:36Speaker 2: other guys. Edge rusher, that's the next big one. These
- 47:39Speaker 2: are the big three right offensive line wide receiver, edge
- 47:41Speaker 2: rusher with edge rusher, I think this is the one
- 47:44Speaker 2: position I feel like Alex in this market, and I'm
- 47:47Speaker 2: adding veteran market draft like, I would kind of let
- 47:51Speaker 2: this one come to you. There is so much edge
- 47:54Speaker 2: rusher talent available through the draft and free agency and
- 47:58Speaker 2: possibly via trade as well. Crosby's truly available via trade. Like,
- 48:03Speaker 2: there's there's a ton of edge rushers that that I
- 48:05Speaker 2: think are gonna be good players, whether they're young or
- 48:09Speaker 2: on second contracts or rookies or whatever. I would not
- 48:13Speaker 2: go out there and and feel like they need to
- 48:16Speaker 2: be super aggressive with this one. I'd be more aggressive
- 48:19Speaker 2: at wide receiver and offensive line because I think there's
- 48:22Speaker 2: a finite amount of resources at those positions for exactly
- 48:26Speaker 2: what you're looking for. But I could rattle off, you know,
- 48:29Speaker 2: whether it's free agency or draft, you could probably rattle
- 48:32Speaker 2: off ten names in both categories of guys that kind
- 48:35Speaker 2: of fit their mold. Do what they want these guys
- 48:38Speaker 2: to do. You know, the Crosby thing is the big one, right,
- 48:41Speaker 2: you know, do you make that move or not? But
- 48:44Speaker 2: like Boie Mafi, Deafitie Oway, Jeremond Jones, Arnold de Bique, Kingsley,
- 48:49Speaker 2: iMac Bari, I mean there's a million of these guys
- 48:52Speaker 2: in free agency even too, that I think are kind
- 48:55Speaker 2: of like hitting their second contract peaks. And then you
- 48:58Speaker 2: get into the draft and it's one of the deepest
- 48:59Speaker 2: positions in the draft as well.
- 49:00Speaker 3: Were you out Trey Henderson.
- 49:02Speaker 2: I'm kind of out on Trey Hendrickson. The age worries me.
- 49:08Speaker 2: Max Crosby is a fun idea. That being said, just
- 49:14Speaker 2: to play Devil's advocate on that for a second, because
- 49:15Speaker 2: we are both pretty pro Max Crosby. I feel like
- 49:19Speaker 2: you just watch them basically lose the Super Bowl and
- 49:22Speaker 2: almost lose throughut the playoff because they couldn't score, and
- 49:25Speaker 2: so then you're gonna sink your number one resource, your
- 49:28Speaker 2: thirty first overall pick plus drafts, you know, cap space
- 49:32Speaker 2: into a defensive player.
- 49:35Speaker 1: And I'm not saying the wouldn't Hendrickson be a better
- 49:37Speaker 1: option than Crosby because you don't have to go.
- 49:40Speaker 2: But he's older, he's not as good. He's like thirty
- 49:42Speaker 2: two years old.
- 49:43Speaker 3: It's thirty one.
- 49:44Speaker 2: I just I don't know. I'm not as caught up
- 49:48Speaker 2: in that, Like I'd probably rather go after one of
- 49:50Speaker 2: these second contract free agents instead, like a Mafi someone
- 49:55Speaker 2: like that. It just that's the only hang up that
- 49:57Speaker 2: I have with the Max Crosby thing is that they
- 50:00Speaker 2: couldn't score any points in the playoffs and then your
- 50:03Speaker 2: big investment in the offseason.
- 50:05Speaker 1: But the other problem was and very able talked about
- 50:08Speaker 1: this after the Super Bowl, and this is kind of
- 50:09Speaker 1: something I'm big on. Bigger picture. Yeah, they couldn't score
- 50:13Speaker 1: a lot of points. There's also you know, if they
- 50:15Speaker 1: forced one turnover in some of those games, how much does.
- 50:18Speaker 3: It open things up? And they were not.
- 50:22Speaker 1: Defensively, they were very good preventative defense. They stopped all year,
- 50:26Speaker 1: through the playoffs, even into the Super Bowl. They stopped
- 50:30Speaker 1: offenses from making plays. And so you might hear that
- 50:34Speaker 1: and think like, okay, great, so why do they need help.
- 50:37Speaker 1: There's another level to it, which is the defense making
- 50:40Speaker 1: plays themselves. And that's what Vrabel was addressing after the
- 50:42Speaker 1: Super Bowl and he said, yeah, we didn't get the
- 50:43Speaker 1: turnover needed or whatever. You know, they were towards the
- 50:46Speaker 1: bottom league and turnovers, their sacks kind of came in bunches.
- 50:48Speaker 1: They weren't consistent. The next level of the defense is
- 50:52Speaker 1: a defense that makes plays. It's on ball production. And
- 50:55Speaker 1: to your point about the offense, yes, I also think
- 50:59Speaker 1: there's something to be said or just take that defense
- 51:01Speaker 1: the next level and make it the best unit in
- 51:02Speaker 1: the league. Yeah, because you could say, you could say
- 51:05Speaker 1: the Patriots didn't win the Superow because they couldn't score points.
- 51:09Speaker 3: Seattle didn't exactly win that Super.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Bowl because their offense was lighting it up either, it's
- 51:12Speaker 1: because their defense wasn't just preventative. Their defense made a
- 51:15Speaker 1: ton of plays in that game. And when you look
- 51:17Speaker 1: at the Patriots best defensive players, they're good players, they're
- 51:20Speaker 1: really good players, but a lot of them are preventative.
- 51:22Speaker 1: And you know, whether we're talking about guys at the
- 51:25Speaker 1: top of the depth chart where they're talking about some
- 51:26Speaker 1: of these rotational players for agency draft, something I want
- 51:29Speaker 1: to see them do on defense because they're going to
- 51:30Speaker 1: need to add on defense. Take Max Crosby out of it,
- 51:32Speaker 1: like they are going to be additions on defense this offseason.
- 51:37Speaker 3: I want to see them.
- 51:38Speaker 1: Target players specifically that are playmakers to get to the football,
- 51:42Speaker 1: forced fumbles, interceptions, things like that, because that's the angle
- 51:45Speaker 1: I think they were missing.
- 51:46Speaker 3: So to bring it back to Crosby, Crosby.
- 51:49Speaker 2: Turnament the best player in the league at that He turns.
- 51:51Speaker 1: You into more of a much more of a playmaking defense,
- 51:54Speaker 1: especially when you have Christian Zohlz and Carlton Davis and
- 51:57Speaker 1: you're going to force quarterbacks to throw really quick, clean
- 51:59Speaker 1: things like that. I put more of a premium on
- 52:02Speaker 1: that than I think most people. I want to see
- 52:03Speaker 1: them become more of a playmaking defense.
- 52:05Speaker 2: I'm with you, and that's definitely the pro Crosby argument
- 52:09Speaker 2: is that I think, one, he might be the best
- 52:12Speaker 2: player that you can acquire in the offseason, like assuming
- 52:16Speaker 2: that a guy like AJ Brown or something like that
- 52:18Speaker 2: is off the.
- 52:18Speaker 3: Table, probably better player than J Brown too, he might
- 52:22Speaker 3: just be the.
- 52:22Speaker 2: Best football player period that you could acquire. And then
- 52:26Speaker 2: the second part is is that it really does feel
- 52:28Speaker 2: like that's the finishing piece to the defense if you
- 52:31Speaker 2: get a double digit sack guy, a guy that creates
- 52:34Speaker 2: as much havoc on a play to play basis as
- 52:36Speaker 2: Max Crosby does. One of my favorite things about Max
- 52:39Speaker 2: Crosby is how good he is against the run. This
- 52:41Speaker 2: is not just a pass rusher like this guy consistently
- 52:44Speaker 2: leads the league in like run stop win rate, all
- 52:48Speaker 2: the run metrics, tackles for loss, like all the high
- 52:51Speaker 2: level run metrics. He's near the top or at the
- 52:54Speaker 2: top of every single one of those lists. And by
- 52:57Speaker 2: the way, he's like a top ten or fifteen pass
- 52:59Speaker 2: rusher at the position too, So he's a two way
- 53:02Speaker 2: force and that there's absolutely a lot of kind of
- 53:05Speaker 2: like finishing touch, you know, final piece like that. It
- 53:08Speaker 2: does feel like he would be that For the defense.
- 53:12Speaker 2: I just wonder, like I said, you know, just to
- 53:14Speaker 2: play Devil's advocate. The offensive, I think is where you
- 53:19Speaker 2: probably need the most talent upgrade. I think if you
- 53:21Speaker 2: went into next year with a similar defense on paper
- 53:23Speaker 2: as the one that played in the Super Bowl, you
- 53:25Speaker 2: still feel pretty good about that side of the ball. Offensively,
- 53:29Speaker 2: we saw a lot more warts in the playoff run
- 53:31Speaker 2: than we saw defensively. And then I would also just
- 53:34Speaker 2: say with you know, Crosby, like that's kind of your
- 53:37Speaker 2: big investment, Like that's that's gonna be a chunkier cap
- 53:41Speaker 2: space if you want to look at it that way,
- 53:43Speaker 2: that's going to probably be your first round pick. Like
- 53:45Speaker 2: that's your move in this offseason?
- 53:48Speaker 4: Is that?
- 53:49Speaker 2: And in an offseason where I just rattled off like
- 53:51Speaker 2: ten guys that are available, whether it's through the draft
- 53:54Speaker 2: of free agency, I do think that there's one lesson
- 53:58Speaker 2: and I know every you always do this with every
- 54:00Speaker 2: Super Bowl winner. With the Eagles, it was interior defensive line, right,
- 54:03Speaker 2: you got to get Milton Williams's and Jalen Carter's and
- 54:07Speaker 2: Jordan Davis's and win in the middle of the pocket.
- 54:11Speaker 2: This year with Seattle, it's pass rush depth. Like Seattle
- 54:15Speaker 2: has just had waves of defensive line depth, like seven
- 54:18Speaker 2: or eight guys that could get after the quarterback. So
- 54:21Speaker 2: do you try to if it's not Crosbie, let's say
- 54:24Speaker 2: they don't go that direction, do you try to create
- 54:27Speaker 2: that in the aggregate by signing like two or three
- 54:30Speaker 2: really good you know, solid edge rushers that then combine
- 54:34Speaker 2: to have like now you have like six seven deep
- 54:37Speaker 2: of pass rushers on third down and you just come
- 54:39Speaker 2: at people with waves, you know, like Seattle does. I
- 54:42Speaker 2: think you could win either way, Like I think either
- 54:45Speaker 2: way is a viable Yeah.
- 54:46Speaker 1: I just think again, adding to the defense isn't ignoring
- 54:48Speaker 1: the offense. You're gonna create short fields, You're gonna take
- 54:50Speaker 1: pressure off off the quarterback.
- 54:52Speaker 3: Things like that.
- 54:52Speaker 2: Fair enough, all right?
- 54:53Speaker 3: Also, Canada losing three to two with seven minutes to go.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Oh man, I don't you know I actually kind of
- 54:59Speaker 2: want them to win, like I want to see you
- 55:01Speaker 2: of course.
- 55:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:02Speaker 2: I mean that's that's what we all were waiting for
- 55:04Speaker 2: all Olympics. Uh, safety, I think the fascinating part about
- 55:10Speaker 2: safety is how people feel about Jalen Hawkins and Craig
- 55:15Speaker 2: Woodson as a duo. I think those guys. Is it
- 55:18Speaker 2: fair to say those guys overperformed last year because I
- 55:20Speaker 2: feel like they did.
- 55:22Speaker 3: Woodson's a rookie. This might just be who Woodson is, Yeah,
- 55:24Speaker 3: but I don't know with him fair enough.
- 55:26Speaker 2: I guess more. What I'm saying getting at is just
- 55:29Speaker 2: like there were some concerns when they have moved on
- 55:32Speaker 2: from Duggar and Jabrill Peppers. There was some concerns about
- 55:35Speaker 2: that move. There was some second guessing about that at
- 55:38Speaker 2: the time, and for their scheme and their defense, they
- 55:41Speaker 2: were they were dead on about it. They they made
- 55:43Speaker 2: the right choices with those players. Jalen Hawkins, I'm interested
- 55:47Speaker 2: in resigning I think safety. You mentioned the third safety
- 55:50Speaker 2: and we were kind of getting into the linebacker safety thing.
- 55:53Speaker 2: To me the way that I would like to see
- 55:55Speaker 2: them go moving forward, and this is kind of what
- 55:57Speaker 2: Seattle has also perfected. So maybe a little bit of
- 55:59Speaker 2: a Super Bowl blueprint is playing more dime defense on
- 56:05Speaker 2: passing situations where you're really using like a hybrid safety
- 56:10Speaker 2: as that extra guy instead of a coverage linebacker. It's
- 56:13Speaker 2: kind of we're splitting hairs. They're both kind of getting
- 56:15Speaker 2: to the same thing, but they didn't play as much dime.
- 56:18Speaker 2: They kind of played it a little bit more with
- 56:20Speaker 2: del Pettis in the playoffs. But they could kind of
- 56:24Speaker 2: get one of those, you know, high level dimebacker type
- 56:28Speaker 2: of players that would allow them to just play three
- 56:31Speaker 2: safeties more often and now you have your tight end guy,
- 56:34Speaker 2: you have your rangy coverage player, but you're just playing
- 56:37Speaker 2: him on third down and passing situations instead of all
- 56:39Speaker 2: the time. The safeties. In free agency, Kobe Bryant is
- 56:44Speaker 2: a free agent from Seattle, and they play a lot
- 56:46Speaker 2: of the same like early down quarters and stuff like that.
- 56:49Speaker 2: I could definitely see if Jalen Hawkins goes elsewhere like
- 56:53Speaker 2: Kobe Bryant would probably be a one for one replacement there.
- 56:56Speaker 2: That would be pretty easy transition. I would say the
- 56:58Speaker 2: same thing about Gilman from the Chargers and Blank and
- 57:01Speaker 2: Ship from the Eagles. I think those guys all kind
- 57:03Speaker 2: of play the same brand of safety that Jalen Hawkins does,
- 57:07Speaker 2: maybe better, but same players.
- 57:10Speaker 1: I would just this is one where I'd go to
- 57:12Speaker 1: the draft. You already got a lot of big money players.
- 57:14Speaker 1: On defense, It's a really really good safety draft. You know,
- 57:18Speaker 1: there's options and maybe if Hawkins leaves, it's one and one. Right,
- 57:22Speaker 1: you draft that that deep safety. You know, Kevin Byard's
- 57:24Speaker 1: out there. That's the name we're gonna hear tied to
- 57:26Speaker 1: them quite a bit. Yeah, because the Titans connection, right,
- 57:29Speaker 1: But yeah, it's it's a It's a pretty good safety
- 57:34Speaker 1: f ratency class.
- 57:34Speaker 3: I love some of the safeties in this draft though.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Okay, so talking about the draft, Yeah, I just I'm
- 57:40Speaker 2: only through the first round, guy, So bear with me.
- 57:42Speaker 3: Did you I'm guessing no? Did you watch Caleb Downs?
- 57:45Speaker 7: No?
- 57:46Speaker 3: Okay, I know he's so good.
- 57:48Speaker 2: I know he's good. There you go. There's my take.
- 57:53Speaker 2: The two safeties that I think are interesting here, and
- 57:56Speaker 2: really the the types of players that they are makes
- 58:00Speaker 2: it even more interesting because they're very different types of players.
- 58:03Speaker 2: Uh so big Neil Warren from Toledo is it a Thinnemon?
- 58:07Speaker 2: Dynamon Diynamon from Oregon? Didn't? Dylan Dynamon? Two very very
- 58:13Speaker 2: different types of players. And this is a philosophical thing
- 58:18Speaker 2: that I think is really fascinating this offseason. The one
- 58:22Speaker 2: I see the vision with McNeil Warren. Is he nick
- 58:24Speaker 2: Ammon Warrey? Probably not, but it's similar. Right, He's gonna
- 58:27Speaker 2: be sort of like a hybrid slot box safety. Uh,
- 58:33Speaker 2: that's gonna be able to do a lot of the
- 58:34Speaker 2: nickel things that like you want to do in big
- 58:36Speaker 2: nickel packages, whether that's three safety nickel or a three
- 58:40Speaker 2: safety dime. And he's got that kind of flexibility. He's
- 58:43Speaker 2: awesome in the run game. He's awesome at taking on blocks.
- 58:46Speaker 2: He basically beats blocks like a linebacker would. He's got length,
- 58:50Speaker 2: he's got size. I see it. And I missed on
- 58:53Speaker 2: him and worry because they played him so much in
- 58:55Speaker 2: the deep part of the field in college, and I
- 58:57Speaker 2: was like, he's just not going to live there, Like
- 58:58Speaker 2: that's just not going to be a strange His Seattle
- 59:01Speaker 2: turned him into Kyle Hamilton and he's a stud, right,
- 59:03Speaker 2: and they were They nailed it. I could see the
- 59:06Speaker 2: similar vision, uh with with the Toledo kid. But the
- 59:09Speaker 2: problem is the Patriots just moved on from players like
- 59:12Speaker 2: that that. They just moved on from Kyle Duggart and
- 59:15Speaker 2: Jabriel Peppers because they didn't fit their system for what
- 59:19Speaker 2: they asked for in the safeties. Dynaman from Oregon is
- 59:22Speaker 2: a Patriot safety. Like that's a guy that can play
- 59:25Speaker 2: over the top, can play split safety zone page Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 59:29Speaker 2: can play split safety zone, can play some match, can
- 59:32Speaker 2: play some man to man, can cover over the slot
- 59:35Speaker 2: like that that's what they look for now, can blitz
- 59:37Speaker 2: a little bit off the end of the line of scrimmage,
- 59:39Speaker 2: and their simulated pressure pressures, all the things that they
- 59:42Speaker 2: just asked Jalen Hawkins and Craig Woodson to do all playoffs.
- 59:45Speaker 2: Dynaman does them all at a high level. So I
- 59:49Speaker 2: like both players in a vacuum. But when we start
- 59:52Speaker 2: talking about fits, like are they really going to get
- 59:54Speaker 2: back into that hybrid box safety thing or is that
- 59:58Speaker 2: just gone for good? And I think that that kind
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: of gets into your thing about the coverage linebacker, because
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: now if we're not gonna if they're not going to
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: acquire those box safeties, yeah, and they're not going to
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: try to go to hybrid route like a nickam and
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: Worry route. Now, you do maybe need a more athletic
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: linebacker to play next to Robert Splane and Christian Ellis
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: did a nice job, but could you be better?
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: Get better opportunities? I think in this draft to get better.
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and that that comes into play more if you
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: are going to be more traditional in terms of your
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: back end, where you're going to have two true safety
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: you know, kind of free safety types, deep safety types
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: outside corner slot, corner line, you know what I mean.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: Like your back seven is very structured, very traditionally. If
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: you're gonna get kind of creative with it with these
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: hybrids and start getting into more dime stuff and three
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: safety stuff, then that's where a guy like the kid
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: from Toledo could really be interesting. But I just that's
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: not what they They went the total opposite direction last
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: summer when they moved on from Duggar and Peppers.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: And that's like I like some of the day two safeties. Yeah,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: so you know, so thienem Men, they'd probably take a
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: thirty one or it's a trade down. But yeah, aj
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Halsey from LSU. He's built bigger, like he's six foot
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: two twenty, but he's a he's a coverage player and
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: another guy tremendous, tremendous on ball production, is played in
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: a lot of different schemes in his career. Really smart player,
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: instinctive player. Kamari Ramsey from USC you know, another more
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: of a true like split safety kind of guy. But
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: I think there's and Patriots fans here a day two
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: safety and oh boy, here we go again, right, But
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: I think there's some real value there.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: Okay, that'd be interesting to dive into because this is
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: a great safety class and I really liked both those players.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: I just it's more about the vision of how they're
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: going to use those players. And I think that that's,
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: like I said at the top of the show, that's
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: the most exciting part about this offseason to me is
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: how I have like an idea of like what kind
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: of players they're looking for in these different spots. And
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: I think safety is a big one. Last one here,
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: and then we're going to take a break and then
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: we'll open the show up to the calls and emails
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: talk a little bit about tight end.
- 1:02:00Speaker 8: You know.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: I think this is still something that has to be
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: on the radar. You know, Hunter Henry's over the age
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: of thirty, Austin Hooper is a free agent at thirty one.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: They don't really have anything else behind that. I think
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: it's a decent free agency class. Depending on what is
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: pretty good, well, it depends on what you're looking for,
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: you know, And I think that this is something that
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: I may be going to care more about than others.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: But the big reason why the Patriots like two tight
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: end package didn't really get off the ground like they
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: maybe thought it would. They only played twelve personnel on
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: nineteen percent of their snaps last year. It wasn't like
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: a featured part of the offense. A big reason why
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: is because they stunk running the ball out a twelve
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: personnel couldn't run it out of twelve. They were twenty
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: ninth in EPA and rush EPA out of twelve personnel,
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: So they basically had no drop off in their rush
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: efficiency from twelve to eleven. So why wouldn't you just
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: put the extra receiver on the field and be faster
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: and more dynamic in the passing game. So if they
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: when you start to talk about tight ends and look
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: at tight ends, like the blocking element I think is
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: really important. No, it's huge, Like I just think it's
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: hugely important. Like I think that if you want them
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: to be a two tight end offense and you want
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: them to play like the Rams or something like that,
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: or if you want to go in that direction, which
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: I think is a good direction to go in because
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: you can marry, run and pass and then you get
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: the play action going and all that good stuff. But
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: if you don't have like a dynamic inline blocker, then
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: it doesn't work. Like you know, go to back to Seattle,
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: like a J. Barner is a dude like that guy
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: can block and catch the ball, and that gives them
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: the flexibility to be able to do that kind of
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: thing they were not good enough is their inline blocking.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: It was a big issue, and they couldn't run the
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: ball out of twelve so you get the six to
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: zero line stuff going. Is a is a sort of
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: step that they had to take because they couldn't block
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: out of twelve personnel. They played a lot of eleven
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: and just kind of spread the field and ran the
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: ball that way, and they played a lot of six
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: to zero line because their twelve personnel package frankly just
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: kind of stunk, like it just wasn't very efficient. So
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: if they're going to be that offense, and we start
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: to get into some of these free agent targets, like
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: I love Kyle Pitts. I think he's super talented. He
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: doesn't block for nothing, Like he's not going to block.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: He's not going to put his hand on the ground
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: and block anybody. So what does that Where does that
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: really give you an advantage? Because if you're putting twelve
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: personnel on the field and every team can match your
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: twelve personnel out of nickel because they know you can't
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: run the ball effectively out of twelve because you don't
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: have blockers to held up at tight end, right, then
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: you're poor. Like then then you're just putting slower, less
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: dynamic receivers on the field.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: No, I'm with you, And it's a big part of
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: Josh McDaniel's offense. And look, you're not just gonna find
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: Rob Gronkowski, you know, it's it the well rounded tight
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: ends are. If you can do both, you're just a
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: better player. Right, So it's not that easy just be like, oh,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: go find somebody that can do both. But you know,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: I wouldn't be upset if they signed Kyle Pitts. I
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: think he has value in his own right. But just
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: all things equal, if they get a guy that slightly
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: less is a receiver not and I'm not talking blocking
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: tight end, I'm not talking Lee Smith, right, yeah, yeah,
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: but if they get a guy that's a little bit
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: less as a receiver, but it's going to really contribute
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: as a blocker, at least in the draft, has the
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: upside to really contribute as a blocker, because most tight
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: ends coming out of college can't block. Even the ones
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: that profile is the ones that can't can't. Yeah, they
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: got to be coached into it. I would rather than
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: get the guy that's a little bit less of a receiver,
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: but he's going to contribute in the run game, so
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: you know, for all again, I wouldn't be upset if
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: they signed Kyle Pitts, but I don't know if the
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: Eagles are gonna let.
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: Dallas Goddard get away.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: But like a guy like Dallas Goddard, a guy like
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: Charlie Kohler, a guy like Kate Aughten who's going to
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: be able to do that well rounded thing, or you know,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: we can start doing names in the draft. I really
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: like Oscar delp because I think he's one of those players. Yeah,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: that's more what I'm looking for, you know, if i'm
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: them at tight end than just the pure receiver.
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it just it's all goes back to matchups in
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: personnel matching and how are you going to find advantages
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: you know, if you can run at nickel and then
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: you can throw at base, like, that's when you become
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: really difficult to to fed. If everybody can just stay
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: in nickel against you because you can't run at nickel. Well,
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: now you have, tight ends are just organically slower receivers,
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: right Like, they're just organically less dynamic, slower receivers for
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: the most part. Unless you have like a you know,
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: all time great tight end, you know, unless you go
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: out and trade for like Trey McBride or something like that,
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: that's what you're gonna get. I like Likely. I think
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: Isaiah Likely is a little bit more of a blocker
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: than like Kyle Pitts's. He's not a great he's not gronk,
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: he's not a great blocker. But I think he's a
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: good enough blocker and certainly a good downfield receiver if
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: you were looking for like that HVAC sort of thing
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: like Chicka Konquo's and a fun player. I just don't
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: think that he's an inline blocker at a high level
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: that's going to help you in this regard. Daniel Bellinger
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: from The Giants is an interesting name. Yeah, I had
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: to watch probably too much Giants this past season, and
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: he always kind of stood out to me, big dude,
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: can catch the ball, can block a little bit.
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: Foster Moreau was.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: With McDaniels in Vegas. I you know, he's a little
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: bit more of a bigger inline blocker. Those aren't guys
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: that are going to like change the equation from a
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: pass game standpoint. They're not difference making receivers, but they
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: might be able to get you some more opportunities to
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: be able to run the football against favorable looks, which
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: is ultimately what you want to be able to do
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: out of these packages. So that was the biggest thing
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: that was holding back their tight end room this past season.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: They weren't very good in line blockers. Hunter Henry's a
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: really solid NFL receiver, he's not a great blocker. And
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: Hooper took a step back, I would say, with his
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: inline blocking this past season, and it kind of just
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: made their twelve personnel useless. And I mean like and
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: I would say the same thing about twenty one. Like,
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: their full back groupings weren't good at well.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: They needed they needed a real full back and you
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: know they'll get Broc Lampy back from injury this year but.
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: Hunter Henry's not like a big play threat. He's a
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: chain mover.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: Yeah, you can get by with your ends a chain mover,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: especial if they're gonna add somebody like a Denzel Boston
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: or an AJ Brown, Like that's a big play threat.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: Especially you also keep Diggs. Yeah, like the tight end
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: just needs to move the chains and block. That's Josh
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: McDaniels tight end.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: Yeah's awesome. Probably not getting in. They wont a few
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: too many. This is a weird game.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: I've been playing with myself and when people call it
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: on the on the sports up, how many so somebody
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: called in about I think it was Cayden Proctor right like, oh,
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: you know they should is there any chance Kyden Proctor?
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: Blah blahlah, And I think they won. I try to
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: do the mathemad.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: I think they won five or six too many games
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: to draft Cayden Proctor, Like how many? How many games?
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: How many games? Too many did they win?
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: To get Kenyan Sadek.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: I think he probably goes right inside the top twenty
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: so however many games that is because I think that
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: he's so at least four probably he's uber talented. Yeah,
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: he can do a little bit of everything. He's a
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: dynamic seam stretch you know, steam runner, seam stretcher, is
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: it advanced. Metrics aren't great, you know his yards per
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: route run.
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: The Oregon players, the metrics are never great.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: His production last year was not on the level of
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: like a Warren or a Coulson Loveland or.
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: Somebody like so much younger than Warren.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: But he's a really he's a really dynamic mover and
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: if he develops and use him correctly, he's going to
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: be one of the better tight ends in the league. Yeah,
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: he's a good player. Don't think they're going to get
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: him either. But it's a it's a weird tight end
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: class because it's not there's only one kind of guy
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: at the top, and that's Sadik and then you kind
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: of go like thirty or forty picks before the next one.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: But then there's a huge a csture. Guys, there's a
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: lot of depth.
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: I like this.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: It's different than the last couple of years. We were
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: talking about this once then in the year about it,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: you saying and not being as good of a tight
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: end class. It's not as good at the top. Yeah, boy,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: there's some players when you start digging into it.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: Yeah, once you get to like from like seventy five
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: to one point fifty, there's going to be a handful
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: of tight ends that are going to go on that
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: range that are gonna go.
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: There's also some great tight end names.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: Yeah, Oscar Delp's a good one, Oscar Dell, Michael Trigg, Tanner,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: coozial Uh and eight boor Kreiker. I think it is
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: John Michael gillenborg Riley, Noah Kowski.
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: Like these are tight end names.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: R J.
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: Maryland, what do you think of Stowers?
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: Big dude?
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: I like Stowers. He's got that you know.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: I'm a weakness for the guys I have a weakness
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: with the guys who are former quarterbacks. Yeah, because I
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: love the way they see the game former quarterback. I
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: really like him as a player. But to go back
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: to my whole thing about the blocking, really not much
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: of a blocker. So somebody I like more, I would
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: say as a neutral prospect than I do for the Patriots,
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: especially where he's gonna go, Like, give me Oscar Delp
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: around later. I think that's a much better pick for
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: the pagri Stowers will go somewhere else and be really good.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: I don't really think he's the guy that the Patriots
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: are looking for at that position.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: I've seen a little bit of Delp and we got
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: to take a break, but I've seen a little bit
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: of Delp, and he's a dynamic mover like he's kind
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: of you know, got that Georgia tight end like yackability
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: and all that stuff.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: Delp's super weird. He's actually gonna be one of the
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: bigger names of the combine Oregon, just or not or
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: in Georgia. The last two years, One really didn't throw
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: to their tight ends, just didn't involve them in the
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: past game. And when they did, they had two equally
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: good ones that kind of split a fifty to fifty
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: to help and Loss and Lucky who went back to school.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: I was hoping Lucky would be in the draft, right
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: like Lucky for the Patriots too. But like so, his
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: productions almost non existent.
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: It's not good.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: But you just put on the tape and you watch him,
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: and when he does get a chance to make plays,
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: he makes plays. So people are gonna be scared off
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: by his production. That's why he's projected as low as
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: he as right now. I think some people have him
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: is like a high Day three pick. He's gonna test
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: really well, he's gonna interview really well. Like I think
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: he got to look past the production with him, and
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: I know tight ends. Generally, the production is a stronger
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: indicator than most positions of what the guy's gonna do.
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: In the league.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: Oregon just I keep doing that. Georgia just never gave
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: him the ball. Yeah, and to me, that's on Georgia.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: That's a Georgia mistake.
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: I think he can play.
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: All right, We're gonna take a quick break, do some

- 1:14:54Speaker 2: A of the season, but you know, we move on
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: absolutely right.
- 1:15:01Speaker 5: So Kyle Pitts is the name that I've been talking about.
- 1:15:04Speaker 5: I know he's not a blocking tight end, but New
- 1:15:07Speaker 5: England Patriots, I mean, we have not addressed the tight
- 1:15:10Speaker 5: end position in how many years are we going back? Guys?
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: Are we going back? Like ten fifteen years? They just
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: never did anything after the Crockery.
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: Five years they signed Hunter Henry and Johnny Smith.
- 1:15:23Speaker 5: Yeah, but I'm talking like an inline blocker slash receiver.
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: They haven't done any of that. Like again, Dalton, what
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: was it Dalton and Kay Devon Osiassi's like that was
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: the thing back in Yeah, so it's never panned out.
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: So I'd rather go for the receiving guy. I mean,
- 1:15:41Speaker 5: I was a big Michael Mayer guy coming out of
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: the draft. I know Josh McDaniels picked them. I don't
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: know if we could snag him from Vegas or not,
- 1:15:48Speaker 5: but that's the type of guy that I would really like.
- 1:15:50Speaker 5: But the wide receiver I wanted to get your guys,
- 1:15:54Speaker 5: take Malachi Fields. He looks like a perfect, like day two,
- 1:15:59Speaker 5: day three type of guy. Wanted to get you guys'
- 1:16:02Speaker 5: take on him because he's a big receiver.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for the call, Mark, I actually it raised
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: an eyebrow for me when I saw Daniel Jeremiah had
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: Malchi fields in the first round yesterday. Yeah, and his
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: mock draft. That always tells me that maybe the league
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: is a lot higher on him than the media is.
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: Right now, I haven't watched him yet, I will, but
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: his point about tight ends is mostly factual. I mean,
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: they had the Ossiossi and Keen draft that was twenty twenty,
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: right right after Gronka moved on, retired whatever you want
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: to call it, that obviously didn't pan out, and then
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: really between then it was kind of like the Gronk draft,
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: and then it was the Grond Carnandez draft right and
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: then the Ossossi Keen Draft, And those are the only
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: kind of times that they've invested like real capital in
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: the draft at end position.
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: Oh in the draft Okay, yeah yeah, I mean I
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: I Hunter Henry Jona Smith is not not investing in
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: type Oh yeah that worked.
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: That was also five years ago though.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: No, No, it's time for them to invest again, absolutely,
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: and they should do it through the draft.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, So I could see what he's saying. I
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: just keep going back to what I was saying earlier
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: about the matchup thing, like you have to think about
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: it from a defensive coordinators perspective, and Kyle Pitts is
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: going to be the Patriots When they played Atlanta earlier
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: this year, had John Giles work as Kyle Pitts on
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: the scout team. They treated him as a wide receiver,
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: like they said that this is a wide receiver and
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: a tight end's body, and just from a matchup standpoint,
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: it just doesn't present as many issues from the defense
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: if you're basically just putting a third or fourth receiver
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: on the field that just is masquerading as a tight
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: end because he has a tight end next to his name.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: So that's where my whole blocking thing comes from. I
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: think this is coming back and I kind of like
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: that it's coming back across the league. Deck Y, you
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: need guys that can block now at that position to
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: really change the deck, to shuffle the deck in your favor,
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: and I think that that starts with tight end. Kyle
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: Pitts is an extremely talented player. I think that Drake
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: Man and Kyle Pitts would do wonderful things together in
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: the passing game. I am sure. I just don't know
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: how much more sort of flexible that makes you when you.
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: Sign Kyle Pitts and just play at receiver and then
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: out a tight end.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: I mean I probably play him at the in the slot. Yeah,
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: but like at that point, it's kind of like what
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: the Bills tried to do with Kincaid, Like just true,
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: just draft a receiver, you know, Like yeah, but I yeah,
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: I mean that's what he is. He'll put his hand
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: in the dirt and run routes with his hand in
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: the dirt, But nobody's worried about him blocking you. That's
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: just there's some alignments that they're just gonna put him
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: in line and have him run routes from there. He's
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: a good player. I'm not trying to crap all over him.
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: It's just a from a stylistic standpoint, I like Likely
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: a little bit better. For that reason. I think Likely
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: is a little bit more of the thing I'm talking about.
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: Probably not all the way. You know, he's not a
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: true difference making blocker, but he's a good enough blocker
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: that it kind of presents those problems. Let's get back
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: to the phones. Aldred is in North Carolina? What's up? Aldred?
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: Hey?
- 1:19:05Speaker 6: Fellas, how you doing? Hey Bart? You're all right? Disagree?
- 1:19:10Speaker 6: Get that during bosting out your mouth? Okay, hey, don't
- 1:19:13Speaker 6: you think we got enough of them guys on the
- 1:19:14Speaker 6: field already? You know it might not be that big,
- 1:19:18Speaker 6: but blow jump ball, you know, can't separate and done
- 1:19:23Speaker 6: what you got? And like I said, I want somebody
- 1:19:25Speaker 6: that's supposed somebody can carry the defense. Make you thread
- 1:19:29Speaker 6: them a little bit and then you know, open up
- 1:19:31Speaker 6: the middle, you know, like I said, the guys from
- 1:19:33Speaker 6: Timse maybe pull about uh Chris Love out of you
- 1:19:37Speaker 6: out of Louisville. He's six two running four to three
- 1:19:40Speaker 6: outside true X and like I said, he run more
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: routes too, and not just three.
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: So we think that one and I'd.
- 1:19:50Speaker 6: Rather have likely before I have Pitts, you know, and
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: I hope we can get him. So what do y'all think?
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: And I take it off there, Thank.
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: You, thanks for the call. Yeah, I hear what he's saying.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: Like obviously, if Denzel Boston ran a four to four,
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: he'd be a top ten pick, right And you know
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: Ted didn't run a four to four either. I think
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: that Ted's more flexible. I think he's more fluid. I
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: think he's more loose, you know, with his routes and
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: things like that, a little bit better of a route
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: runner than Denzel Boston. But they're in the same archetype, right,
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: Like I would probably say it's like Ted Drake London.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: Maybe T Higgins is kind of in this mole. Yeah,
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: Denzel Boston is kind of like a lesser version of
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: that type of player, right, And I get the hesitation
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: with that I do in terms of like speed down
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: the field. Like I think that that's why everybody's so
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: interested in Alec Pierce, because that's a guy that has
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: the size that Boston has, but did run a four
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: to four and jumped like a something ridiculous like forty
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: five inch vertical or something like that. He does have
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: that kind of speed in dynamic explosiveness. But that's why
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: those guys don't hit free agency very often. Like, I
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: don't know if Alex Pearce is going to make it
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: all the way to free agency. Where are you familiar
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: with the guys that he mentioned in the draft?
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: I think he said Chris Bell, Yeah, mentioned Louisville. Chris
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: Bell Chris Bell six. He's a big guy six two
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: two twenty plays on the outside, really good speed, like
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: big play threat.
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: That's what he is.
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: He's kind of the exact guy you're looking for. But
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: he towards ACL in December, and for a guy that
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: size on a torn ACL, you know, how's that going
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: to impact his movement coming back. He's a big risk player. Yeah,
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: he's a big boomer bust player. I don't want to
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: see them take that risk. They have this momentum they've
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: been building this team. Well, you know, he's still probably
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: he would have probably would have been right in that
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: conversation that late first early second round conversation with Denzel
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: Boston in casec had he not gotten hurt, He's still
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: probably gonna go top fifty. I don't know that I'm
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: using a pick that high on a guy that that
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: isn't gonna play as a rookie, or won't play right
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: away as a rookie at least, and you don't know,
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: you know, how he's going to move coming back. I
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: just think that's too much of a risk for them, right.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: You know, there's a couple of guys like this every year.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: We did it last year, with Josh Simmons. You know,
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: I make the comp to the two comps I make
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: are to Dominique Easley into Malcolm Mitchell. Right, Yeah, if
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: you tell me Chris Bells there in the fourth round,
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: absolutely go for it that high. I just don't think
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: they have the roster right now as good as better
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: as they've gotten. I don't think they have the roster
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: right now to take advantage or to take that kind
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: of risk.
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I hear you.
- 1:22:31Speaker 6: I I.
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: Hear all the conversations about guys that have more speed.
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: I do think it's worth noting. Just think about the
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: best receivers in the league. Not all of them run
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: for two.
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: It's not a ton of burners.
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: Yeah, but you also they're all none of them are
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: guys that you're like worried about the speed.
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: No, but the two guys that were the finalists and
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: the yeah one to two in offensive player of the year,
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: we're like four or five guys in Puka and.
- 1:22:57Speaker 3: J Well, but that's still like respectable.
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: I think the day you need to like most of
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: the top receivers in the league fall right in that
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: like four four eight to like four five three range,
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: And there's there's exceptions on both sides, I'm sure, but
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: like a four to five flat is kind of the
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: sweet sigh, Like as long as we're here, then we're good.
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: Because there's so much technical stuff with route running obviously,
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: ball skills, body control, like, there's so many other elements
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: of it. And I, you know, I got caught I
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: get caught up in it too. It's why we all
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: love the combine, and we all get caught up.
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: And there's the other side of it too, there's the
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: fast and thing. You can't just be adding speed just
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: to add speed.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: Yeah, a couple of more receivers that were getting emails
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: about and just prospects in general. Barth, what's your take
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: on Omar Cooper Junior. I know this is a popular
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: one for a lot of people. Kid from Indiana that
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: Indiana has two wide receivers, right, this is like the
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: more separating type of receiver.
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: Right. So the other guy is.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: Serrat, Elijah Serrat, who kind of reminds me a little
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: bit of Jakobe Myers. I'm interested to see where Omar
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: Cooper measures in. So you mentioned he's kind of a
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: quicker separator. He's listed at six four to two oh four.
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: If he's moved or sorry, six foot two o four
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: oh okay, but even still, you know he's moving like that.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: It's six foot two oh four. Yeah, it's probably a
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: first round pick. Yeah, definitely top fifty, right, but is
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: he more like five ten one eighty? And then now
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: you're getting closer to you know, a guy like a
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: Pop Douglas. I've seen some people throw out Zay Flowers
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: comparisons for him. So let's see the size. But he's
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: that yeah, he's that that inside over the middle of
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: the field separator. He's kind of like a Day two KCC.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: And you know it's a couple of guys like that.
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: Antonio Williams, I don't not like him, but I just
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: I'm so blea about the Day two receivers just because
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: of where they're at. They don't need another guy in
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: the middle of the depth chart. They need a guy
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: at the top that's going to dictate the coverage, especially
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: if it's an inside. Like if you're going out and
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: getting an X and you're trying to upgrade over KSh
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: on booty, maybe you're doing that on Day two. I
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: know a lot of people like Chris Brazzle, like fine,
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: I could see that I just what is another guy
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: that's gonna like shifty guy that's gonna play in the inside.
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: You have that, you have Pop Douglas, you have Kyle Williams.
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: He's a good player.
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: But I think we're past the point now of just like, okay,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: then you to add good players because they don't have enough.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: We can really start talking more about fits.
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I like Omore Cooper. I haven't deep dive into
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: him yet, he's on my list, but just you can
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: see the compete level with him. You see the hands
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: like in this train.
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: He's a really good player.
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: He reminds me like a little bit more of like
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: a like a Manny Sanders type, okay, than like a
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: pure like slot guy like a popp or you know,
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: Ze Flowers that's more jitterbuggy like. He's more like smooth
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: and yeah, strong and you know, runs good routes over
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: the middle of the field. Fun player. But I'm with
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: I can see what you're saying in terms of is
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: he really is he a difference maker to the point.
- 1:26:00Speaker 3: You know, like where you're where you're gonna have to
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: take them?
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you know, dictating coverage and all that different
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: kind of stuff. The other guy that we're getting a
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: ton of emails on Alex Draft.
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: That WoT you go down to day three if you
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: really want that guy, you go down day three. Take
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: Lewis Bond.
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, Lewis Baond's fun r.
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: Mason Thomas from Oklahomamas is starting.
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: To like pick up a lot of like draft Twitter steam.
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: I watched a couple of his games the other day.
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: You can see the first step, the explosiveness off the ball,
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: the bend, the pursuit to the quarterback. The one thing
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: that I would just say with him, and this happens
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: every year, there's always one edge guy that has a
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: lot of like let's call it five to ten really
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: flashy reps. Yeah, and those reps just get put on loop.
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: I mean he gave Will Campbell the business two years ago.
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: He was like the one guy that you really had
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: a lot of success Campbell.
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: I'm a little bit worried about our Mason Thomas in
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: that sense of like are we all just watching the
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: same two games that he donated, And like I also
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: just you know, there's a size thing there with him
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: in terms of like length and just you know size
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: that is he a third down pass rusher, is he
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: a full down, you know, said, that's the.
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: Bigger thing for me.
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: Like, if you think Harold Landry is gonna be healthier
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: and he's gonna bounce back, and you're talking about replacing
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: Calebon Chase On as a guy that's just gonna go
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: get the quarterback, Yeah, great, Like he makes a ton
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: of sense to me if you're trying to shore up
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: your defensive, you know, your defense on the edge against
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: the run and contain the pocket and maybe more of
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: a Landry replacement to play opposite Chase On. There's guys
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: that like better. So it's it's about role for him,
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: and he'll be one. Like he's a good player and
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: he belongs on the radar. Let's see what they do
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: in free agency. Let's see if they sign anybody. Let's
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: see if they bring back Chase On, and then we'll
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: have a better idea of how he fits.
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's I think that he's you know, they
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: drafted Braden Swinston kind of hoping that he would be
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: this guy because I don't think that they really fully
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: thought that Chase On Landry were going to be like
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: full time players when they were healthy. And I think
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: they will Chase on I think they thought was remember
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: at the beginning, Yeah, I think they want Swinton to
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: maybe develop into that kind of guy that can kind
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: of come on third down and really rush the passer.
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: Our Amason Thomas is definitely going to have a role
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: on an NFL team right away doing that. I don't
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: know if he's like a true.
- 1:28:25Speaker 3: Three days player.
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: He might be, but not yet.
- 1:28:29Speaker 3: I'm saying.
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: Yeah, here's more of like a kind of big picture
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: question on watching film. This is from Blake in Oregon.
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: He says that he's, you know, a big fan of
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: the draft process and you know that sort of thing,
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: and he wants to know how we watch college prospects
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: and what we look for in certain positions. That could
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: take all day to tell you, not saying that we
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: do anything shattering, but there's a lot of positions. And
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: then he said that, you know, he watches like YouTube
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: highlights and you know, outside of a big catch or
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: pancake block or its sack or something, he doesn't really
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: know he's looking for. I would just say, Number one,
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: there's a lot of really good even just like TV cutups.
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: Now nowadays it used to be Draft breakdown or whatever
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: that website was that doesn't exist anymore. But there's other
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: places that you can go that are full cutups of
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: games and not YouTube highlights. Right, you can get really
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: lost in the sauce with highlight tape. That's not the
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: best way.
- 1:29:29Speaker 3: It's not.
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: You don't have to completely ignore it because I think there's.
- 1:29:32Speaker 3: A place to start with it. So you kind of
- 1:29:34Speaker 3: get an idea, Okay, like what is this guy?
- 1:29:36Speaker 7: Like?
- 1:29:36Speaker 3: What is the goal?
- 1:29:37Speaker 5: Right?
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: What do we What's what's the end goal here?
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: Yeah? I would say that when it comes to lineman,
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: you know, there's a lot of technique stuff that goes
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: into it, you know, pad level, hand placement, different rush
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: moves certainly, and ways to get off blocks for defensive
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: lineman is key. I was watching this morning, Banks the
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: kid from Florida, the defensive tackle. It's Florida, right, I
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: think Carlton Banks. Yeah, Caleb Caleb is Carlton Banks, the
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: guy from Fresh Principal. See, I'm gonna do that all drafts,
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: so I'm bad.
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: Quick quick side note here. While we're on defensive tackles,
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: you need to watch Dominie Orange.
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:30:19Speaker 3: They call him Big Citrus.
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: You just you just like him because his nickname is
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: Big Citrus part of the reason I ultimately Caleb Banks
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: and not Carlton Banks.
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: But yeah, I almost did this in my mock draft,
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: and I didn't want people to rip my limbs off
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: for taking a defensive tackle, like a run stopping defensive
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: tackle on Day two.
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: But like man if.
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: Tonga doesn't come back or they just want to be
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: better against the run on the interior, you talk about
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: a guy that's a verable fit, high motor, violent, disruptive.
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: I talked about the thing earlier, like defensive playmakers.
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: I don't there's we just who's player.
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: We just talked about Omar Cooper, like now that they're
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: good again, I haven't had a player like this in
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: a few years. I think the one exception was Joe Bilden,
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: who they took. Anyway, Yeah, guys, I like that. I
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: don't necessarily see how they make sense for the Patriots,
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: but I just like them. So I'm going to try
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: to make it work or I'm just going to talk
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: about him. I need you to watch Big Citrus and
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: tell me what the argument is for the Patriots drafting him,
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: like maybe moving up a little bit from like what's
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: their third pick, ninety.
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: Thirty one sixty three ninety five.
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: You need to tell me what the argument is to
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: move up maybe from ninety five, like ten to fifteen
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: spots and get dominic orange, because oh my goodness, is
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: he dominant and fun to watch.
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: You just think you just like him because of his nickname.
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: It's how I first discovered it. It's the first game
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: of the year they play in Ireland every year. This
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: guy keeps blowing up the run game every play and
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, that's interesting, and they're like, they call
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: him Big Citrus.
- 1:31:52Speaker 3: Now I'm like, that's very interesting. And then I kept
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: watching it and he was just destroying guys.
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: So back to the email, okay, and I'll get to
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: Big Citrus when I eventually, I promise. You know, I
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: think for a lineman, it's all technique, right, you're looking
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: at pad level, you're looking at feet, you're looking at
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: hand placement, you're looking at traits like length, and you
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: know that sort of thing. But I was mentioning Caleb
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: Banks because I was watching him and you can see
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: the explosiveness off the ball, the power, the strength that
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: he has to his game, the length. He's a big,
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: like long, strong dude, but he just doesn't have a
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: lot of like counters with his hands, Like when he
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: gets stuck on the block, he's just stuck and there's
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: no there's no second gear, there's no counter move to it.
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: Like those are the types of things that you look
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: for a little bit more in terms of the draft
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: because like that's what you need at the NFL level,
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: because you're not going to consistently win with your first move.
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: At the NFL level, the blockers are too good, so
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: you always need to have that like deep bag of arsenal.
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: I would say the same thing about wide receiver, Like
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: you always want to look at a guy's best release
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: against press, but he does he have anything else in
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: his by in his bag that he can add to that?
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: You know, what's his top of the round technique? How
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: does he catch the ball is a huge one that
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: I think I have like sort of learned over the
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: years to be more cognizant of. So I don't want
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: to sleep on a guy like Denzil Boston, for example,
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: because in the NFL everything is crowded, everything is congested.
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: You're catching the ball in tight spaces constantly, So how
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: does that player catch the ball? How does he carve
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: out space for himself. How does he win at the
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: catch point? Like, these are all elements that are really
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: really important. So we could probably do a whole show
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: on that question, but I thought it was a fun
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: question for this show in particular.
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: I would just say this, and this goes to kind
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: of gett away from highlights too, not getting away from
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: but like, and I've mentioned this before, it's consistency, right,
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: And if you're a D one player in looking at
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: the D two and D three guys is a little
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: bit different.
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: But you don't do that a ton, right, If you're
- 1:33:55Speaker 3: a D one, we'll just use quarterback.
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: Yep, you pretty impressive arm talent just on the general
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: you know, and most of those guys can make eye popping.
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: Throws even when you get in a group of five.
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: But are they making it one out of every ten times,
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: three out of every ten times, eight out of every
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: ten times. So like, that's kind of what you're looking for,
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: And that's maybe where you where you look at the
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: highlights and then go back to the film where the
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: highlights can be useful. Okay, these few plays really represent
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: what I think this player can be. Now, let me
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: go watch a full game and are those the only
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: three times he made the playoff season? Or is he
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: making like similar plays or close to it, or is
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: he is he in position to make it right? That's
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: consistency is the big thing to me. That's what true
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: people realize. That's what at the NFL and college whatever.
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: You get to a certain point, you're naturally very talented.
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: Even the guys that we say suck in college are
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: tremendously talented, but they just might not make the plays
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: as consistently as the guys that we really look at
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: at the top.
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: That's always what I'm looking for this email. One more
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: question we didn't talk about, Alex was or one more position. Yeah,
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: where are you at with the Patriots running back room? Uh,
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: ramondro Stevens and Trevion Henderson as of right now? Antonio
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: Gibson coming off in acl Lan Larrison. Yeah, my rookie
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: mini camp hero. He'll be back. And he was already
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: doing stuff off to the side towards the end of
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: the regular season in playoffs, So I think he's healthy.
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: I think he's going to be a full go in
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: the off season. But do they need a third back?
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: Do you trust Antonio Gibson coming back off the ACL
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: so kick returner was a big aspect of the kick return.
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: Yeah, so kick returner, I look more wide receiver Barryon Brown,
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: that's my guy. But at running back, it's a kind
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: of remember the last few years, every year was like
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: an unbelievable running back class, and people start saying, you
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: can't say they're all great. If they're all great, then
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: that's just what the classes are. Yeah, No, this year
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: is why those were a great class. This year's class
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: really not great. But there's some fun names. I would
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: like to see them bring in somebody else to compete
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: with Antonio Gibson, you know, because where is he at
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: health wise? And Larison for that third running back role.
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: This could be a late pick. There's some guys I
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: like that are projected to go later, you know, you
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: want to talk about like middle of day three. Kaylon
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: Black from Indiana is a fun player. But even if
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: you go later and now you're getting in the guys
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: that can play special teams. Jayden Ought was supposed to
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: be a top one hundred pick at one point and
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: just kind of fell off the map when he transferred
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: from cal to Oklahoma. There could be some month tap
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: potential there. Jam Miller is the latest running back from Alabama.
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: Didn't live up to some of the others, but just
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: a well rounded guy, a good depth option. Jamal Haynes
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: from Georgia Tech runs people over. Kjean Owens from FIU
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: one of the best big play threats in all of
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: college football last year in terms of like big play
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: numbers like yards per Carrie runs of fifteen plus twenty
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: plus yards. He's right there neck for neck with Jeremiah Love. Now,
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: Jeremiah Love did it Notre Dame. But like, if they
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: want another big play threat, Okay, Steve, it's gonna be
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: our play to play guy. But we want a guy
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: we can kind of spell with Trayvon Henderson and then
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: the two other names I'll give you because I thought
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: both of these guys are gonna be in the draft
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: last year. I liked both of them last year. Des
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: Reid from Pitt I'm gonna give you a camp. Take
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: this with a grain of salt, because there's flashes of
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: this guy, but the guys in anomaly. He really shouldn't
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: have worked out, and it's flashes, it's not consistent. It's
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: another pit guy. Deon Lewis he's very small.
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: I mean, Dean Lews isn't so good that he's not comparable,
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: Like it's.
- 1:37:33Speaker 3: Not different Patriots fancy kind of is des Reid.
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: Is very small.
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: We're gonna say, like Emmitt Smith or something.
- 1:37:39Speaker 3: Des Reid is very small and very fast.
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: Okay, So I don't know, like how he's not gonna
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: have a long NFL crek because he's not built for it.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: He's not gonna be a high volume guy, but always
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: e quick. When he gets ball in his hands, he
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: can make plays. The other guy, CJ. Donaldson, was it
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: West Virginia. Transferred to Ohio State last year. Came in
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: as a tight end, moved to running backs. He's a
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: big guy and is just a really well rounded player.
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: He kind of got buried at Ohio State this year.
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: They had a freshman named Bo Jackson, yes, who just
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: was a study so CJ. Donaldson And also his nickname's Bo.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: He doesn't go by Bo because his real name is
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson. He rules, we'll get to him in a
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: couple of years. But C J. Donaldson got buried a
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: little bit. But there's you know, you talk about a
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: day three running back. I think there's a lot to
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: work with there as a third back, as a contributor.
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: He's going to play on special teams as well. So
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: there's some fun names later in the draft are running back.
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: I wouldn't hate to see them, you know, add somebody
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: six or.
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: Seven of impact running backs? Yeah, not a good offseason.
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: Not a good free agency class.
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: Not No, it's a good for agency class. What are
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: you talking about for impact running backs?
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: I think isn't. Travis Centtn is like the only one
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: the Super Bowl MVP. Okay, but he's going to go
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: back to see Keath Walker. A lot of people saying
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: he's not. He's going to go back.
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: What about Breese Hall too? That one, I guess is
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: a little bit more interesting.
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: But there's I think Tyler aljier is slept on. Rico
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: Daddle had a good season. Like, no, there's there's good backs.
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: Yeah the draft.
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: Nothing the draft.
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: Really, I don't think there's a great offseason for backs
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: like Kenneth Walker. I don't think is going to go anywhere.
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: Breese Hall is interesting, but like you're adding Breese Hall
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: to be like the guy and you're maybe it's still
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: I know, but I'm just saying, like, you know, Breese
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: Hall for the Patriots, I don't think makes a whole
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: lot of sense. I think the whole thing was running
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: backs with the Patriots is what they truly, deep down,
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: truly what they think of Trevon Henderson and he basically
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: whether it was valid or invalid, they can only tell me.
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: He basically became unplayable in the playoffs, like they did
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: not play him in in the playoffs period.
- 1:39:42Speaker 4: Is that.
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: I wonder how much that was past protection.
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: Pass protection? Is it rookie running back and Josh McDaniel's offense.
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: It's always a slow learning curve, and the fact that
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: he was able to contribute at all that could be
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: a really good sign. That could mean that he is
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: gonna blossom into a great player for them. The all
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: of it that we all saw with Trevion Henderson really
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: all season long, is it's all mental stuff. It's run reads,
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: it's finding space, it's pass protection and pass protection rules.
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: Like none of it was like he's a physical freak,
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: Like he can run faster than anybody. He's physical, He's
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: very very good in the open field, Like none of
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: that is a concern. It's getting to the open field
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: that's the concern. It's seeing rush lanes develop, it's knowing
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: where creases are and cut back lanes are, and reading
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: off blocks and setting up blocks and like all of
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: like the little minutia things about the running back position.
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: Is that gonna click for him moving forward? Because if
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: it is, they're in good shape, Like Stevenson has your
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: thunder and Henderson has lightning, Like they're in pretty good shape.
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: You got a third running back in here that's kind
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: of like the Antonio Gibson role that maybe helps return
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: kicks and spells and things like that. You're golden if
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: you don't think Travion Henderson's trending in the right direction.
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: And this is probably not a twenty twenty six things,
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: so probably beyond now we're talking about running back being
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: more of a long term thing.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: They if you want to go a little bigger, the
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: name I'll give you if you're talking about like late
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: day two is Joanah Coleman from Washington. Now, this is
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: more thunder and thunder with Stevenson than thunder and lightning
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: mean physical bully, just pain in the ass runner. Really
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: good pass blocker can contribute in passing. Amy kind of
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: took a jump as a receiver this year. One of
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: those guys that I like watching run because he just
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: cracks skulls.
- 1:41:32Speaker 3: That's what he does.
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: He's never seen a defender that he doesn't think he
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: can run through. And the reality is in college he
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: ran for most of them. So if you want, you know,
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: would try to find a true RB two if you're
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: and I think it's too early to give up on
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: Trevion Anderson, way too early. But if that's what you're
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: looking for, Joanah Coleman. Again, it's not thunder and lighting.
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: It's thunder and thunder.
- 1:41:50Speaker 6: But he is.
- 1:41:51Speaker 3: He is a pain in the ass.
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: This is one of those positions that again and I
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: think it's way too early probably to give up or
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: determine Travon Henderson. But that's a This is like a
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: Mike Rabel truth serum question of like, do you guys
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: think that Travon Henderson is close like to being you know,
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: a full time usage type of player, or you know,
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: is this something that might be more of a concern
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: in a year or two from now? This question This
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: emails from Sean in Connecticut. He asks about Mike Rabel's
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: draft history with the Tennessee Titans and if it was
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: good or bad, given the fact that there's like what
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: five or six years worth of draft data now, he
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: didn't control the draft. Famously did not control the draft.
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: John Robinson controlled the draft for most of his tenure
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: as the Titans head coach, and then.
- 1:42:43Speaker 3: So he very much didn't until he very much.
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: Didn't and then they had it was ran Carthin, right
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: that that had the weird like overlap year where Mike
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: Rabel I think might have controlled it for one cycle
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: and then ran Carthin got like an arranged marriage situation
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: where they got put. Anyways, long story short, they started
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: out on a heater in Tennessee with the draft, and
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: then a like a lot of these situations, it fizzled
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: out and they ran out out of their luck in
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: a lot of ways. That's what kind of led to
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: his demise in Tennessee, right, is just like Belichick here
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: and so many other examples, you just sort of start
- 1:43:21Speaker 2: screwing up the draft and then he just don't get
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: the talent there, you know, the biggest one obviously being
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: trading aj Brown and drafting Treylon Burks to replace him
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: in that one flopping. But early on in his Tennessee tenure,
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: these are some pretty good drafts. The first draft in eighteen,
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: Rashaun Evans, like probably didn't quite live up to the hype,
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: but he was like an NFL player, like he played,
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: you know, and then obviously Harold Landry in the second
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: round was a huge hit for them. This next draft, though,
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: alex is quite the draft in twenty nineteen, Jeffrey Simmons,
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: AJ Brown, Amani Hooker all in the same draft, so
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: that one big home run. And then the following draft
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: in twenty twenty is when it started to kind of
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: go downhill. That's when they drafted Isaiah Wilson. Yeah, that
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: was a good twenty ninth overall the tackle. And the
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: next year they took Caleb Farley, so they got a
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: little bit injury risk, you know, they took a lot
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: of injury risk, and that started to be where and Able.
- 1:44:17Speaker 3: Kind of talked about that.
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: Last year he was asked sort of indirectly about Josh
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: Simmons and mentioned that that was something he learned from Tennessee,
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: was making out more of a part of the evaluation.
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the back to back draft Farley had,
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: like I think it was a back thing.
- 1:44:29Speaker 3: Yeah, not in the league anymore.
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a big issue. And then Isaiah Wilson,
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: the tackle had like all sorts of off field concerns
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: going into that draft. Really talented, but had a lot
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: of issues. All right, we'll go back to the phones,
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: Patty's and Aguan. What's up Patty.
- 1:44:46Speaker 5: Hey, what's up?
- 1:44:47Speaker 10: Guys?
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: How you doing good? How are you good?
- 1:44:51Speaker 4: Pretty good? I got a couple of things I want
- 1:44:53Speaker 4: to go over, and I want to shout out my
- 1:44:55Speaker 4: guy Elder too, but I'll, you know, I try and
- 1:44:58Speaker 4: say that for the last I think I do like
- 1:45:01Speaker 4: the idea of signing Romeo Dobbs because I do think
- 1:45:05Speaker 4: like I think Alex. I think it was Taylor, your philer.
- 1:45:10Speaker 4: Kyles has said something about footy possibly moving, you know,
- 1:45:14Speaker 4: moving out of the X body thinks he'd probably do
- 1:45:16Speaker 4: a lot better, and I like, I've always liked Dobbs
- 1:45:20Speaker 4: as a player. I know he's had some injury concerns
- 1:45:22Speaker 4: over the last couple of years. But if we're gonna
- 1:45:25Speaker 4: move on from Stefan Diggs, there's two guys probably, And
- 1:45:30Speaker 4: I know you don't want to hear it because I
- 1:45:32Speaker 4: think sincet Scan is going to be gone too. At
- 1:45:34Speaker 4: pick thirty one. But two guys in the second round
- 1:45:36Speaker 4: that I really like is one a Antonio Williams out
- 1:45:39Speaker 4: of Clenston and a guy who I feel like is
- 1:45:42Speaker 4: flying under the radar, who I think is going to
- 1:45:44Speaker 4: be a really good player, Skuyler Bell from Yukon. And
- 1:45:48Speaker 4: it broke my heart when Chris Daal got hurt because
- 1:45:50Speaker 4: he was kind of my wide receiver draft brush. But Eldred, Uh, listen, buddy,
- 1:45:56Speaker 4: if you think that this year's crop the wide receivers
- 1:45:59Speaker 4: are good, just wait till next year. Buddy. I know
- 1:46:02Speaker 4: Smith is going to be the prize pick of the draft,
- 1:46:04Speaker 4: but you got you got guys like Nick marsh and
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: Pullman TJ. Moore who are all big and fast guys,
- 1:46:10Speaker 4: and Alex our guy Nick Harbor. That's that's who I
- 1:46:14Speaker 4: want him to get next year. And I'll just stand
- 1:46:17Speaker 4: on this if I know it is our biggest need
- 1:46:21Speaker 4: on defense. But if a guy like Tone I think
- 1:46:24Speaker 4: his name is Anthony Hill, junior linebacker out at Texas,
- 1:46:28Speaker 4: is available at thirty one, would you take them? Because
- 1:46:30Speaker 4: I think that guy's a freak and I'll take it
- 1:46:32Speaker 4: out there, guys.
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: Thanks for the call, Patty.
- 1:46:37Speaker 3: One too, Georgia.
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: Those are my that's on my to do list over
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: the last couple of days before the combine there there's
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: That's the one thing about thirty one Alex. There's a
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: million different ways that can go about, so.
- 1:46:50Speaker 3: A couple of things to that.
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: Yeah, they could add some of those Day two guys,
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: but those guys don't have so like if they're not
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: going to come in and reset the depth chart. We
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: saw what happens this year when you have a wide
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: receiver that can dictate coverage like that. Those guys are
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: good players. They don't project as that like Apex guy.
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: And at a certain point it's continuing to add in
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: muddle the middle of the depth chart.
- 1:47:14Speaker 3: Yeah, it doesn't do. You're just kind of spinning your tires.
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: Especially with like a guy even though it wasn't consistent,
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: there were flashes from Kyle Williams. And so now if
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: you add another.
- 1:47:24Speaker 3: Guy right now, you're just burying him.
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: You're now they're competing for it.
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: So you're just burning through those picks, like you got
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: to finish with what you started with Kyle Williams. You know,
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: I even put Romeo Dobbs in that category and he's
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: coming from a situation in Green Bay where they kind
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: of did that something else. I don't mean to pick
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: on Patty, but something else about the twenty twenty seven
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: draft class, because I keep hearing those, Yeah, you can't
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: trade any picks in twenty twenty seven. You don't want
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: to invest too much a wide receiver right now, because
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: twenty twenty seven, twenty twenty seven, if they're picking high
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: enough to draft Jeremiah Smith, Ryan Williams or Cam Coleman,
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: something has gone wrong, like simply put something that you
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: should not be rooting for them to draft one of
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: those three guys because either something terrible has happened.
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: Four sixth round picks, their fourth round pick.
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: Either something terrible has happening with the Patriots, or something
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: terrible has happened with none of those three players, which,
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: by the way, Ryan Williams had a bad year this year,
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: kind of be you he is. But like and after that, yeah,
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: like Nick Harber is a fun player. He's hardly a
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: short thing. And I'll say that if somebody really likes
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: Nick Harbor. Nick Harber's hardly a short thing. Some of
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: those names he mentioned that these are guys that are
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: further down the board you can't base your twenty six
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: offseason on they're not bad enough anymore to do that.
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: If they had won four games last year, fine, maybe
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: you talk about loading up for twenty twenty seven because
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: it's a really good draft too at other positions, right
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: on the edge, guys like Dylan Stewart and Colin Simmons.
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: But no, like we're past that they're good again. If
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: they're picking high enough to pick those guys, something's gone wrong.
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: The goal should be that they're picking too low to
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: get any of them. So, yeah, there's some good names
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: in the twenty twenty seven draft. I'd rather than just
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: get a guy this year, whether that be in the draft,
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: whether it being for agency, whether it be through trade,
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: get a.
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: Guy this year. It's going to get you to the
- 1:48:59Speaker 3: next level. So they're picking thirty second next.
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: Year and we're not even worrying about Jeremiah Smith or
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: Ryan Williams or any of these guys.
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: Yeah, fair enough. Liam is in Philly. What's up, Liam?
- 1:49:12Speaker 4: What's up?
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: How you doing good?
- 1:49:13Speaker 4: Hey?
- 1:49:14Speaker 9: All right?
- 1:49:15Speaker 5: Hey?
- 1:49:15Speaker 9: Hey out? How you feel?
- 1:49:16Speaker 10: Hey?
- 1:49:17Speaker 9: All right? Yeah? You know, I don't call much. I mean,
- 1:49:22Speaker 9: I you know, but I tell you I've always listened
- 1:49:24Speaker 9: and whatnot, and y'all just touched on what I was
- 1:49:26Speaker 9: just I'm really having the issue you guys, explains to
- 1:49:30Speaker 9: me a little bit more. Okay, So you don't want,
- 1:49:35Speaker 9: you don't want. I don't want to say. I don't
- 1:49:37Speaker 9: know if I want to say, you don't want. You
- 1:49:39Speaker 9: got a dual threat quarterback, right, So I think we
- 1:49:42Speaker 9: all on the same page here. Okay, Yet his talent
- 1:49:45Speaker 9: around him is I but I mean I don't want
- 1:49:49Speaker 9: no more Kayshawn Booty, Jamario Pop Douglas or or a Cowboys.
- 1:49:56Speaker 9: We got enough of that, Okay, I mean he needs
- 1:50:01Speaker 9: a number one. I mean it's it's like y'all been
- 1:50:03Speaker 9: experimenting with that position for almost how long.
- 1:50:09Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I'm That's what I'm saying.
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: I just said, Yeah, we're with you. We get we
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: are with you. We're not in the we're not in
- 1:50:17Speaker 2: the category. We're not in for another third round pick at.
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: Either talking to the depth chart or if you want
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: to take a seventh round guy and whatever, go for it.
- 1:50:25Speaker 9: But right, look, look I get it, Evan, Like I
- 1:50:30Speaker 9: wasn't trying to say when I called last time and
- 1:50:33Speaker 9: I asked you about Jeremiah Smith. Why not, you know,
- 1:50:36Speaker 9: I mean, I'm just saying he needs that receiver that
- 1:50:40Speaker 9: can do it all. Because when you double digs, you're
- 1:50:43Speaker 9: already seen in the super Bowl. Nobody was that's it,
- 1:50:46Speaker 9: nobody's open, that's it done right.
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: But they shouldn't be drafting Jeremiah Smith because they shouldn't.
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: Have to have a pick.
- 1:50:53Speaker 2: I know it, I know it is.
- 1:50:55Speaker 9: I know what you was saying too. I know what
- 1:50:58Speaker 9: you was saying. I mean, you know, if if something
- 1:51:00Speaker 9: when if the Patriots are at a lower play like
- 1:51:03Speaker 9: a top ten, then something went wrong where they can
- 1:51:06Speaker 9: get him. So what's going on? You know what I mean?
- 1:51:08Speaker 9: I understand that.
- 1:51:09Speaker 4: I'm just saying that.
- 1:51:11Speaker 9: The Patriots this experimenting with that position for so long.
- 1:51:16Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you know what I mean.
- 1:51:17Speaker 9: It's I don't want to actually, I don't want to
- 1:51:19Speaker 9: see us doing a two to three second third round
- 1:51:22Speaker 9: picks for wide receiver, try to develop and see what happens.
- 1:51:25Speaker 4: We've been playing this game for a.
- 1:51:28Speaker 9: Very long time now it's getting a little tyingson seriously,
- 1:51:30Speaker 9: like it's time, Like, you know, he beats his number
- 1:51:33Speaker 9: one and Drake is only what two years did a
- 1:51:36Speaker 9: two year rookie deal. He got less after that. What
- 1:51:40Speaker 9: you're gonna do?
- 1:51:41Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, thanks for the callin, William, we're a preaching
- 1:51:45Speaker 2: we just start up again, so we got to end
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: the show.
- 1:51:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't want but yeah, he's not what we've
- 1:51:49Speaker 3: been saying.
- 1:51:50Speaker 10: That it is.
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: It is, and he's William, You're consistent. He's consistently frustrated
- 1:51:55Speaker 2: that they don't have a top dog at wide receiver.
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: And I get it, and I think they're close because
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: I think Diggs is a really, really good number two
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: at this stage of his career. Yeah, if they could
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: get that number one guy that we'll all want them
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: to go out and get. It's just you gotta you know,
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: you gotta put a name to the claim. Right, It's
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: not as easy as it sounds. If I had a
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: ton of confidence in them drafting at that position in
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: the first round, then I would think I would feel
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: a little bit better.
- 1:52:23Speaker 3: Do you think Denzel Boston could be that guy? Yeah?
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: I think he could be, if you know, paired with
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: Drake may Like. Do I think that he's I think
- 1:52:37Speaker 2: I think off of it as a supplement to like
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: more like a one A one B situation, Right, I
- 1:52:43Speaker 2: don't think Denzel Boston is like Jamar Chase and he's
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: gonna come in here and be.
- 1:52:46Speaker 3: Like, well, no, they're picking a thirty one, right, So
- 1:52:48Speaker 3: but a one A as.
- 1:52:50Speaker 2: Like a big body, more outside guy to the inside
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: guy that is Stefan Diggs. Yeah, I think that our.
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: Team's gonna have to choose between doubling Digs or Boston basically,
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: or they're gonna be to keep doubling digs all the
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: way through and leave Boston one on one.
- 1:53:02Speaker 3: My guess that's the kind of guy we're talking about.
- 1:53:04Speaker 2: My guess is that they would probably keep doubling digs.
- 1:53:07Speaker 2: But I think Boston has better chance of beating the
- 1:53:10Speaker 2: one on one coverage than the guys they can.
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: Well, then you have to consider if he's consistently beating it,
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: then you have to consider doubling him.
- 1:53:16Speaker 3: Answers, This is basically what we're talking about.
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: Can they get somebody if they keep digs who will
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: make teams second guest doubling digs?
- 1:53:24Speaker 3: Right, that's it, that's what.
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: Or then that side of the field put the safety
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: old right top and then.
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: Kind of he more comes into play if they move
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: on from Diggs. I love I think he's a great player.
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: I don't know how much sense it makes to have
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: both him and stuff on Diggs. You know, when you
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: have to use a first time.
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: I think that that would be like you were going
- 1:53:44Speaker 2: to decide that Diggs is really just a pass game
- 1:53:47Speaker 2: player at this stage, and like basically he becomes like
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: your third down slot guy, and Concepcion is like your
- 1:53:54Speaker 2: starting Z.
- 1:53:55Speaker 3: And so that's where you get into the twenty six
- 1:53:57Speaker 3: million dollar cap it.
- 1:53:57Speaker 2: Yeah, right, that that would be reducing Diggs's.
- 1:54:01Speaker 3: Role right at that point? Do you just move on
- 1:54:03Speaker 3: and get somebody else who's more tailored to that role?
- 1:54:05Speaker 2: Last six five six minutes here The only couple of
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: other things I wanted to get through today. The combine
- 1:54:11Speaker 2: is next week. I'm leaving Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. We should
- 1:54:18Speaker 2: hear from Mike Rabel Elliot Wolf workouts don't start until
- 1:54:22Speaker 2: Thursday in Indianapolis next week. Just big picture, you know,
- 1:54:27Speaker 2: a couple of Patriot things. I think obviously the number
- 1:54:31Speaker 2: one question is probably going to be a Christian Gonzales
- 1:54:34Speaker 2: contract extension, and is that negotiation begun? Is that negotiation
- 1:54:39Speaker 2: top of mind? That certainly will be high on the list.
- 1:54:43Speaker 2: I don't know if Zach Kory's thing will be super
- 1:54:45Speaker 2: high because we kind of know who Zach Corey is.
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: Yeah, but I don't want to call it a formality
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: because I feel like it takes away from him.
- 1:54:51Speaker 2: But yeah, Christian Gonzalez the number one question that I
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: also have for them, and hopefully somebody else asks. I'm
- 1:54:59Speaker 2: not really sure I should be the one.
- 1:55:00Speaker 4: But you know, the.
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: The offense in the playoffs, this is a big thing
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: that's been bugging me, like what happened to the offense
- 1:55:09Speaker 2: in the playoffs that saw it completely fall off a
- 1:55:12Speaker 2: cliff because there's a lot of threads there, like is
- 1:55:15Speaker 2: it injuries to Drake May and Will Campbell? Is it
- 1:55:19Speaker 2: level of competition with young players playing key roles. Do
- 1:55:23Speaker 2: they think it's gonna get just organically get better? Are
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: they in the market for some of these big splash
- 1:55:29Speaker 2: you know, offensive players that we've been talking about, you
- 1:55:31Speaker 2: know in AJ Brown, Alec Pierce, you know guys that
- 1:55:34Speaker 2: are gonna be up near the top of the market
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: if they are available. You know, where where do they
- 1:55:40Speaker 2: fall in terms of you know, was it system like
- 1:55:43Speaker 2: did something get found out? You know, the systems existed
- 1:55:46Speaker 2: for twenty years. So I find it hard to believe
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: that all of a sudden, Seattle and Denver and Houston
- 1:55:51Speaker 2: have all the answers to the Josh McDaniels offense. But
- 1:55:54Speaker 2: just what sort of led to that, I think is
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: a question that's been you know, lingering on my mind here.
- 1:55:59Speaker 2: But I think the biggest one has got to be,
- 1:56:01Speaker 2: you know, their off season approach and with Christian Gonzales
- 1:56:04Speaker 2: and how they're gonna go about that.
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: Yeah, And because there's a little bit of a clock
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: on it in the sense that you know, the Seahawks
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: think are working on an extension with whether Sevin Witherspoon
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: and whoever pays their guy first, you know, the second
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: guy's gonna up the first guy's contract.
- 1:56:18Speaker 3: Yeah, So it's gonna cost you money if you wait.
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: Now, that doesn't mean you just are gonna you know,
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: teams are going to cave initially because you still want
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: to you know, negotiate that.
- 1:56:28Speaker 3: But there is a little bit of a clock on it.
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: You don't want to be the Dallas Cowboys letting five
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: other people get paid before it's your turn to pay
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: your guy.
- 1:56:34Speaker 2: Yeah. And then there's also not that it's a decision
- 1:56:36Speaker 2: in terms of yes or no without an extension. But
- 1:56:39Speaker 2: the fifth year option deadline is also looming for Christian Gonzales.
- 1:56:43Speaker 2: Thing that's usually like uh, may I want to say,
- 1:56:47Speaker 2: like when they have to decide on.
- 1:56:49Speaker 3: It's usually like the Friday after the draft.
- 1:56:51Speaker 2: Yeah, so that that's coming up, and you know, are
- 1:56:54Speaker 2: you going to pick up the fifth year option or
- 1:56:56Speaker 2: you gonna extend him before the fifty Like all that
- 1:56:58Speaker 2: kind of craziness comes into play with all this as well.
- 1:57:02Speaker 2: Is there anything else that you know, just in terms
- 1:57:04Speaker 2: of like Patriots state of the Union that you're going
- 1:57:07Speaker 2: to be thinking of, not so much like the prospects.
- 1:57:09Speaker 2: We'll get to all of that next week, but Gonzales
- 1:57:12Speaker 2: extension was a big one. I think that the McDaniels.
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: Offense, digs contract contract, what the ones.
- 1:57:19Speaker 3: Like have to be we work Diggs.
- 1:57:22Speaker 2: Hunter, Henry's is uh, you know one that is in
- 1:57:26Speaker 2: the final year of his contract with no guaranteed.
- 1:57:29Speaker 3: And then I think Bradbury too, So just kind of
- 1:57:31Speaker 3: that stuff.
- 1:57:31Speaker 2: Yeah, So we'll be back next week. I'll be in Indie.
- 1:57:34Speaker 2: We're going to figure out a way logistically to do
- 1:57:37Speaker 2: the show. Alex will probably be back here. Uh, doing
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: the show from the studio, from the combine, we'll talk
- 1:57:43Speaker 2: about all the press conference stuff, but most importantly on
- 1:57:47Speaker 2: a show like Catch twenty two, we're gonna talk prospects,
- 1:57:49Speaker 2: and we're gonna preview the drills and we're gonna tell
- 1:57:52Speaker 2: you all you know, who we're looking for and what
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: we're looking for and stuff like that over the weekend
- 1:57:56Speaker 2: next weekend to get into the combine. Did you did
- 1:57:59Speaker 2: you have a fun break, Alex? It only lasted, but
- 1:58:01Speaker 2: here we go. We're back like eight days maybe of easy, Yeah,
- 1:58:04Speaker 2: right into the combine. So first world problems when you
- 1:58:07Speaker 2: go to the super Bowl. The combine is two weeks later. Yeah,
- 1:58:11Speaker 2: so here we go.
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: It wasn't kidding when he said five weeks behind now
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: for the super Bowl.
- 1:58:14Speaker 2: No, he's not kidding. And then the combine happens. And
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: then I want to say, it's like March ninth or
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: tenth is the legal tampering period. So it's like super Bowl,
- 1:58:23Speaker 2: two weeks, combine, ten days free agency. Let's go. Here
- 1:58:27Speaker 2: we go. We're in the off season. So we'll be
- 1:58:30Speaker 2: back next week on Catch twenty two next Wednesday, from
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: Indie talking Combine, talking Patriots. We'll see you guys then right, Hey,
- 1:58:40Speaker 2: this is Deuce.
