- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm good. This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast. The
- 0:11Speaker 1: Patriots Training Camp Cast is your source for all the
- 0:13Speaker 1: news from Patriots Training Camp. Well, I do still watch
- 0:16Speaker 1: the news. Practice is over, but the writers of Patriots
- 0:19Speaker 1: dot com have you covered? What did I miss yesterday?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Now here to review today's practice? The writers of Patriots
- 0:25Speaker 1: dot com. All right, the sixth practice of Patriots Training
- 0:28Speaker 1: Camp twenty twenty two is in the books, the second
- 0:31Speaker 1: padded practice, and we are here to get you, guys
- 0:33Speaker 1: cut up on everything that happened here at July Stadium
- 0:35Speaker 1: today on Tuesday, August second. This is Mike Tusseau joined
- 0:39Speaker 1: by Paul Pirillo, Evan Lazar Patriots dot Com. We're all
- 0:42Speaker 1: out there today, guys. It was a hot one day
- 0:44Speaker 1: two of PADS and I'm gonna start with you, PAULI
- 0:47Speaker 1: what what What's a big takeaway you had from day
- 0:49Speaker 1: two here in pads? A lot more of the defensive front,
- 0:56Speaker 1: I think, really controlling the line of scrimmage. That to
- 0:58Speaker 1: me was a constant both days, you know, running game,
- 1:02Speaker 1: passing game, consistently pushing the pocket, making Mac Jones and
- 1:06Speaker 1: Bailey Zappy sort of pulled the ball down and improvised,
- 1:09Speaker 1: the offense not really looking overly cohesive, and I think
- 1:13Speaker 1: it's all started up front. I think the defensive front
- 1:16Speaker 1: front seven for the Patriots has really controlled things really
- 1:21Speaker 1: in both days. Yeah, certainly not not great from the
- 1:23Speaker 1: offense last couple of days, but not totally devoid evan
- 1:26Speaker 1: of a couple of good plays, couple of guys standing
- 1:28Speaker 1: out here and there, who are a couple of positive
- 1:30Speaker 1: guys on the offense you think have had a good
- 1:32Speaker 1: day day and a half. Here it seems like they're
- 1:34Speaker 1: receiving Corps is trading off good days, right, which I
- 1:37Speaker 1: think speaks to the fact that they might be one
- 1:40Speaker 1: of those teams that has good depth but doesn't necessarily
- 1:42Speaker 1: have that number one guy. And that's okay. One week
- 1:45Speaker 1: it might be Kendrick Boring goes off, the next week
- 1:47Speaker 1: it's Nelson Agalore, And today that's who it was in practice,
- 1:51Speaker 1: going right down the right sideline against Justin Bethel and
- 1:54Speaker 1: coverage and went right by him as you hope he would,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and caught a deep ball from Mac Jones about forty
- 2:00Speaker 1: five yards in the air. When the opportunity has been
- 2:04Speaker 1: presented to them by the things going on up front,
- 2:07Speaker 1: which I think we'll probably talk about it. As Paul
- 2:09Speaker 1: just touched on the downfield passing has been a little
- 2:13Speaker 1: bit more available, I would say, than what we saw
- 2:17Speaker 1: last year. It does seem like Aglare and Mac have
- 2:20Speaker 1: a little bit more chemistry going into year two. Taekwon
- 2:22Speaker 1: Thoran can certainly get up the field, as we know
- 2:24Speaker 1: Davante Parker has that element to his game as well.
- 2:27Speaker 1: So stretching the field is one thing that again, when
- 2:30Speaker 1: the offensive line is held up and everything has allowed
- 2:33Speaker 1: them to do that, it has looked a lot better
- 2:36Speaker 1: this year so far. So Paul mentioned the defensive front,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and certainly Christian Barmore is a guy that everybody's got
- 2:41Speaker 1: their eyes on. We've had a couple of days of
- 2:43Speaker 1: one on one in pads. He's just a handful. I
- 2:46Speaker 1: mean it doesn't win every rap, but he at least
- 2:48Speaker 1: comes close. I think every time gobble us the offensive
- 2:51Speaker 1: linemen that have to have to deal with him from
- 2:53Speaker 1: a snap to staff basis. But overall, are you buying
- 2:57Speaker 1: on the defensive front, and we have big questions on
- 2:59Speaker 1: the secondary too, Are you buying on this defense right
- 3:02Speaker 1: now in the type of performance, I don't know. It's
- 3:04Speaker 1: hard to It's hard to really make that evaluation based
- 3:08Speaker 1: off of how little we've seen. I do I buy
- 3:11Speaker 1: on bar More, for sure. I think he's terrific, But
- 3:14Speaker 1: I don't know if the defense's edge and play over
- 3:17Speaker 1: the majority of the first week here has been about
- 3:20Speaker 1: that or about the lack of execution on offense, which
- 3:24Speaker 1: is to me precipitated by the stuff that you know,
- 3:26Speaker 1: Evan talked about with you know, the transition that the
- 3:29Speaker 1: offense is going through. We talked about a lot on
- 3:31Speaker 1: Patriots Unfiltered as well. So I want to temper you know,
- 3:35Speaker 1: the you know, the over the top praise of the defense.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I think the defense has controlled things for the most
- 3:41Speaker 1: part in every practice that we've seen, probably with the
- 3:43Speaker 1: exception of the very first one. But at the same time,
- 3:46Speaker 1: the offense is the one that's making some wholesale changes.
- 3:49Speaker 1: So yeah, well the reserve judgment, Yeah, let's let's sit
- 3:51Speaker 1: you up for that, Evan, and a little bit of
- 3:53Speaker 1: the offensive wholesale changes. Uh, you know, just obviously we're
- 3:56Speaker 1: Patriots dot Com. We're not we're not going to break
- 3:58Speaker 1: down the we're not going to send out the laybook
- 4:00Speaker 1: or anything. But you know, just generally, what have you
- 4:02Speaker 1: kind of seen from the offense and how do you
- 4:04Speaker 1: feel like they're kind of evolving? What direction are they
- 4:06Speaker 1: pointing it. It's definitely more of a Shanahan e type
- 4:11Speaker 1: of look to it from what we've seen over the
- 4:14Speaker 1: last two padded practices in particular, and I think when
- 4:17Speaker 1: you ever, you try to implement that type of scheme
- 4:20Speaker 1: and not to sugarcoat it, because quite frankly, the running
- 4:23Speaker 1: game for the first two days of PADS has not
- 4:25Speaker 1: looked good. It's been a slow burn here. But you
- 4:29Speaker 1: have patience, I think is the keyword right where when
- 4:32Speaker 1: you're implementing a scheme like this, it is a very
- 4:34Speaker 1: big difference from what they've done in the past, and
- 4:36Speaker 1: it is a scheme that is predicated on timing the rhythm,
- 4:40Speaker 1: the timing of the blocking upfront and the cutback lanes
- 4:43Speaker 1: presented to the running backs and things like that. It
- 4:46Speaker 1: all has to go in concert and that's going to
- 4:48Speaker 1: take some time. And to steal from Bill Belichick, they
- 4:52Speaker 1: don't play a regular season game tomorrow, so they have
- 4:54Speaker 1: another month or here so or here to really work
- 4:58Speaker 1: through some of those things. I think right now, what
- 5:00Speaker 1: you're seeing with the offensive line in pass protection at times.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Two is not physical limitations. It's not guys blowing blocks,
- 5:08Speaker 1: it's not guys getting beat. It's more so, well, who's
- 5:11Speaker 1: got that guy right? You know? What are we doing here?
- 5:13Speaker 1: How we get into this block there? And figuring those
- 5:16Speaker 1: things out is going to take time and repetition. I
- 5:18Speaker 1: think that's a good point, because I don't I don't
- 5:20Speaker 1: think it's as much about not being good enough as
- 5:23Speaker 1: it is not really being sure what they're doing. I
- 5:25Speaker 1: agree with Evan's assessment on that. The good news is
- 5:29Speaker 1: from a health standpoint, just to get everybody up to
- 5:31Speaker 1: speed on you know what's going on. They're they're pretty
- 5:34Speaker 1: healthy roster. I mean it's still Brian Hoyder has been
- 5:36Speaker 1: out the last couple of days. Bill Belichick said this
- 5:38Speaker 1: morning doesn't expect that to be much longer. And then
- 5:42Speaker 1: James White still on PUP and the two rookie offensive
- 5:44Speaker 1: lineman Hines and Stuber are on NFI. But overall, you're
- 5:50Speaker 1: starting to get the players that that open camp on
- 5:53Speaker 1: lists back into the mix. We're seeing more Miles Bryant,
- 5:56Speaker 1: Jonathan Jones, Jabrill Pepper has been a little slower acclamation
- 6:00Speaker 1: and David Andrews has been out there taking reps eleven
- 6:02Speaker 1: on eleven, so well, a lot of the league is
- 6:06Speaker 1: sort of dealing with some health issues here at the
- 6:08Speaker 1: start of camp. The Patriots are pretty healthy, all right. Well,
- 6:11Speaker 1: that'll wrap up this edition of the Camp Cast. If
- 6:13Speaker 1: you guys want even more, go over to Patriots Unfiltered
- 6:16Speaker 1: episode we recorded today, two hours worth. We really dive
- 6:19Speaker 1: deep into everything that's been going on here the first
- 6:21Speaker 1: six days of practice. But we'll be back tomorrow with
- 6:24Speaker 1: another edition. We got a couple more practices. They're going
- 6:26Speaker 1: to be in stadium Friday night, and then next week
- 6:29Speaker 1: the Giants come to town. We're just about a week
