- 0:49Well before the listener support campaign, I ask listeners to email me with
- 0:53programs that they would like to get a listen to one episode on the podcast.
- 1:00We have so many programs we would like to do, but many very
- 1:04popular, very well beloved old programs with a lot of episodes in existence,
- 1:08just take quite a while play all the way through, and we only have
- 1:14six lots available at this point. Actually, plans are pretty firmly in place
- 1:19for five of those six lots for the next couple of years. Still,
- 1:23there are some great series we'd like to at least bring you a taste of
- 1:26what we hope to bring you down the road. So I ask listeners to
- 1:30email me some of their choices, and we're going to do three of them.
- 1:34I want to, first of all, in advance, thank everyone who's
- 1:37sent in their request. We couldn't choose everyone's request, but hopefully we will
- 1:42satisfy quite a few of you. Of course, this is a listener support
- 1:48podcasts, so I do want to encourage you. You can support the show
- 1:52at support dot Great Detectors dot net, and all donations of seven dollars more
- 1:59receive access to our premium sign Plus, we have a lot of great specials

- 2:07receive a copy of one of four ebooks included all I needed to know I
- 2:13learned from Colombo, plus your choice of one of my or one of my
- 2:16three superhero comedy books, and one other thank you gift. Among the options,
- 2:22we'll be glad to send you your choice of Nero Wolf for Agatha Christie
- 2:27audiobook for any donation of one hundred dollars or more. And we have quite
- 2:31a few other available options available from twenty dollars up. You can view them
- 2:37all at support dot Great Detectives dot net. And I had a couple of
- 2:40emails about this, one from Jonathan actually before I even made an announcement,
- 2:47and then received an email for Timmythee who writes, I would like to request
- 2:53the radio program that started my interest in old time Radio Rocky Jordan, so
- 3:00he is not a traditional detective, but I remember you've mentioned playing the show
- 3:05sometime in the future, and just to listen to any episode will make anyone
- 3:08agree. He fits into the hard boiled detective category, even in far away
- 3:14Egypt. Written in a time when many had no idea what such a place
- 3:19like downtown downtown Cairo was like I dream of one day walking the streets looking
- 3:24for the tambourine. Thank you for all your work providing background information on the
- 3:30episodes you present. My favorites are Johnny Dollar, Pat Novak, and Jeff
- 3:36Reagan. Thanks again, and we'll be glad to grant that request. And
- 3:44a little background on Rocky Jordan. Rocky Jordan actually began over the radio as
- 3:52a man named Jordan. The series aired during World War Two and was set
- 3:57in Istanbul rather than Cairo. In many ways, the series has got an
- 4:01almost Casablanca feel to it. You have an American cafe owner living in Cairo,
- 4:09unable to go home due to some undisclosed trouble, and stumbling into one
- 4:15amazing adventure after another. For all but the last season of the series run,
- 4:20the star of the program was Jack Moyles, who we hear on the
- 4:25lineup as Sergeant Carter. And really moyles career was mostly a series of character
- 4:30roles. This is his most famous starring role and he does quite well in
- 4:35that part. So for today's episode of Rocky Jordan, I've chosen the next
- 4:42episode I haven't listened to in that series. So here from June the twelfth
- 4:46of nineteen forty nine is The Man from Damascus final or Rocky Jordan. Not
- 5:12far from the Musque Sultan Hassan in Cairo stands the Cafe Tambourine run by Rocky
- 5:17Jordan. The Cafe Tambourine, crowded with forgotten men, live with the babble
- 5:25of many languages. For this is Cairo, where modern adventure and intrigue unfold
- 5:31against a backdrop of antiquity. To Night's story, The Man from Damascus Damascus,
- 5:51capital of Syria, population three hundred thousand or self. They say it's
- 5:57the oldest city in the world that people still live in. I wouldn't know,
- 6:00but I do know there's a street in Damascus named the street called Straight.
- 6:04And I also know I once met a man from Damascus and he was
- 6:09as twisted as they come. Go back to a hot Wednesday afternoon. Chris
- 6:15was at the bar serving up some arak, and I was standing at the
- 6:18front of the cafe looking out into the Cairo streets. That's when an old
- 6:23man dressed in a boy's postal uniform and riding a bicycle stopped in front of
- 6:27the tambourine. When he came in, he was carrying a wet envelope in
- 6:30his hand for the mister Jordan one special delivery letter. Did mister Jordan sign
- 6:35his name on his land mister Jordan, would thanks here, pap by yourself
- 6:43an ice cube shak. There was a white envelope with some dirty finger smudges
- 6:50and the Cairo postmark. There was no return address. I looked at it
- 6:55for a moment, then threw it open. The first thing I saw,
- 6:58flattened crisp, was a pack of Egyptian pound notes, and I did a
- 7:01quick tabulation one thousand Egyptian pounds five thousand American dollars and clip to the money
- 7:08was a short note partial payment for services to be rendered one thousand pounds.
- 7:14I'm waiting for you at sixteen Sharia el Nazar seven o'clock this evening will be
- 7:18fine and I was signed the Man from Damascus. Well, I don't take
- 7:26easily to somebody's bidding. Someone wants to see me, he comes to me,
- 7:30so I put the money in the safe. But figure that wasn't the
- 7:32end of the Man from Damascus. Exactly seven o'clock that evening, I knew
- 7:36I had figured, right, Rocky, what is it christ to see you?
- 7:42He's in your office. I tried to stop. Oh that's all right,
- 7:44and sort of expecting him. I mean looking guy. Want me to
- 7:46come with you? No, no, I'll handle it. Take over the
- 7:49till hello, jover, make yourself at home. Yeah, that's what I'm
- 7:59doing. For the good booze, too rich for your taste, party for
- 8:05the time. All right. You know, it's funny figured you differently.
- 8:11Everybody in Dan said you're a right guy. Maybe you've been talking at the
- 8:16wrong people. What do you want you? You have been talking at the
- 8:20wrong paper. Not for sale. A thousand pounds is just the start.
- 8:26There's more what that comes from, and there always is comand big shirt.
- 8:31Bottom up your shirt is seven o'clock. You got the point. I can't
- 8:35make it. That's a big mistake. Your man isn't a safe. You
- 8:37can have it back. That is not my instructions. Oh so you're just
- 8:41a like man something like that. You and me were working for the same
- 8:46man. All right, buddy, you're through talking, and there's the door.
- 8:50Get away from the door, Jordan, or a pin you to the
- 8:52wall. Seven inch blade, Jordan, the mesca steel, got it,
- 9:00I got it, all right. Put the knife away. You'll cut your
- 9:03hand, I'll I'll come with you if your boys wants to see me that
- 9:07badly. I wasn't gonna argue with a seven inch double edged blade, especially
- 9:13the way that monkey was waving in the air well. We left the tambourine,
- 9:16climbed into his car and drove through the Cairo streets out one of the
- 9:20city gates. We ended up in front of a place called the House of
- 9:22Sand shut up. Been called the Pile of Scrap because that's what it looked
- 9:26like, But the knife man said it was a hotel. Two minutes later,
- 9:30my pal knocked on the door of Room twelve. Who's that, Jordan.
- 9:35He's come for the rest of the door, taking a lot for granted,
- 9:39busty all right to me, let him come in. Gone in Jordan
- 9:43and meet your new bolls. I walked inside my pal with a knife,
- 9:48shut the door behind me and stayed outside. Then I saw him, a
- 9:52man from Damascus. He was tall and big, but I couldn't tell what
- 9:56he looked like. His whole face was wrapped in bandages. Reminded me of
- 10:00those pictures I once saw the Invisible Man. Hello, mister Jordan. Nice
- 10:05of you to come sit down. Ah, I'll take it standing. Well,
- 10:09let's go to meet again, is it not, mister Jordan again?
- 10:13You do not remember? You should the Mascus nineteen thirty nine. Well maybe
- 10:22it's my new appearance. I had a face. Then what do you got?
- 10:26Now? Let's talk about da Mascus all right? You wishould drink?
- 10:31Oh? I just gave it up, mister Jordan. You wronged me in
- 10:39the Mascus, I did, Yes, you wronged me most Civie, so
- 10:43severely that I've never forgotten. And I said to myself that some day would
- 10:46come for you. Well I am here, Welcome to Cairol, Jordan.
- 10:52I'm not just talking for pleasure. You sure you get the right guy,
- 10:54and do not try to tell me you do not remember. You are the
- 10:58right men and you know it. But you are fortunate mister Jordan, how's
- 11:03that figure? I'm going to give you a chance to erase our difference and
- 11:07make a little money. Besides, you see, there's someone in Cairo that
- 11:13I want even more than you. So how I figure you are going to
- 11:16bring him to me. His name is Alexako. Zako is pretty big order,
- 11:22I know, but I think you can do it. And police have
- 11:24had a dragnet out for two weeks trying to track him down, and I
- 11:26want to get to him before they do. I think you can bring him
- 11:31to me. You know Cairo better than any man I know of. You
- 11:35know where men like zak Or would hide and how to get to him.
- 11:39Ah. Sorry, friend, you've got the wrong Jordan, listen to me.
- 11:43I would find him myself if I could. I just do not know
- 11:46Cairo. I cannot go wandering around like this. I'm giving you a chance
- 11:52to square a dirty deal and make a little money. On the side.
- 11:56I will double that thousand pounds and call off our little difference. What have
- 12:00you got against Sarko? He took something from me? What my face?
- 12:07Oh? I want to find him, Jordan, I must. I do
- 12:11not know what it is to feel that you can never walk the streets again
- 12:13without a covering the thing you once called a face. Well, what about
- 12:22it, mister Jordan, Uh, no deal. You got a private vendetta
- 12:24with Zako. Keep it that way. Yeah, there's one thousand pounds back
- 12:28by yourself, another boy. I walked out of the House of Sam and
- 12:35the knife man was gone. I found a taxi and headed back for the
- 12:39Tambourine. Alec Sarko, Yeah, all around, no good guy. The
- 12:43Egyptian police wanted him on an attempted assassination Espina's work with an assorted killing or
- 12:48two thrown in. The police had all the roads covered, the trains and
- 12:52the flights out of the city. They figured they had him bottled up pretty
- 12:56well. It was just a matter of time before they bundled him. At
- 13:00the tambourine, I drew myself a beer, found the back table and did
- 13:03some thinking about the man and the bandages in the city of Damascus. What's
- 13:09up Rom? Oh nothing, Chris, just thinking, Hey, you do
- 13:13you ever hear me talk about Damascus? Damascus? Yeah, spent nine months
- 13:18there once, working for an oil company. I don't remember saying anything about
- 13:20it. Why nothing, He's trying to bring back a little memory. Drop
- 13:24it, it doesn't matter. I'll get back me. Gentlemen, you are
- 13:28mister Jordan. That's right. May I talk with you please? It will
- 13:31take for a moment, all right, Chris, I'll talk to you later
- 13:35now, Thank you, mister Jordan. I did not wish to trouble you,
- 13:41but I found that I had no other course. My name is Sandra
- 13:43Marr. I'm from Damascus in Syria. You're traveling and Cairo's on the Grand
- 13:48Tour. This is not a trip for pleasure. I'm looking for someone.
- 13:52If his name is Alexarko, you got lots of company. No, his
- 13:56name is not Alexako. It is Paul Mar. It is my husband,
- 14:01al Mar. I don't know any one by that name. You may not
- 14:03know him by his name, mister Jordan. I am positive that you have
- 14:07met him. How do you figure that? Paul said he had some business
- 14:11in Cairo. He left Damascus four days ago with a man whose name I
- 14:16do not know, but he was the same man who left the tambourine with
- 14:20you earlier to night. It is my belief that he took you to see
- 14:24Paul. Oh, I get it. I tried what I was not able
- 14:28to follow you through the streets of Cairo. So I've waited outside your cafe
- 14:31till you returned. I must see Paul. Would you take me to him?
- 14:37No? Would you tell me then? Where he is, mister Jordan.
- 14:43Paul's business, as he calls it, It is the trouble, some
- 14:48terrible sort of trouble. I know. Oh, you're right there. He's
- 14:50a fine man, mister Jordan, a wonderful man, but things have not
- 14:56gone well since his face. He's in trouble and I've got to help him.
- 15:01He's got a revenge young lady with a guy named Zarko and me.
- 15:05There's nothing fine about that venge. Poor Oh no, it must be something
- 15:09else. He's not that kind of man. Then you don't know him very
- 15:13well. It is true we have not been married for long. Look,
- 15:20why don't you just go back to Damascus and forget it. You're in for
- 15:22trouble here, something's gonna happen. Where is Paul, mister Jordan. A
- 15:28place called the House of Sand, out of the city through the gate of
- 15:31the Bar El Nazer. TAXI will take it. Thank you, mister Jordan.
- 15:35I shall not forget the help you've given me. She walked out of
- 15:41the tambourine, and I hope that that'll be the last I'd see of her.
- 15:43And the Man from Damascus and Alexargo. How vain can your hopes be?
- 15:48Sometimes? Well, we rolled the last on the cuff customer out of
- 15:52the tam about one fifteen in the morning. Chris threw the lock on the
- 15:56front door, and I douse the lights. I'll just go out the backwater,
- 16:00all right, Chris. Right, Rocky, the cow hind the god
- 16:04can't quick an Jance Jordham Vengance, Rocky, you're in Jonah White Christian.
- 16:15Well if you do, and you are not, Dad and I will come
- 16:21for you again. You are listening to the Man from Damascus An Adventure with
- 16:37Rocky Jordan. Remember that five o'clock Sunday afternoon is the new time for Rocky
- 16:44Jordan. So join us each Sunday at five and plan to tune in thirty
- 16:48minutes earlier to hear call the police at four thirty. So you will have
- 16:52a full hour of excitement and action. And now we take you back to
- 17:04Cairo for another adventure with Rocky Jordan, the Man from Damascus. Well after
- 17:19the Man from Damascus threw those slugs at me. I took out after him,
- 17:23chasing him through the darkened streets. But it's easy to lose someone in
- 17:26the whining Cairo streets, and that's just what I did. I get back
- 17:30to the Cafe Tambourine about forty five minutes later, and Chris wasn't there alone.
- 17:34Captain Sam Sabayah Cairo police was there too, waiting for me. Well,
- 17:38Jordan, so you've returned. Sam brings you here this time of night?
- 17:42I phoned him rock I told him I thought you'd be better, all
- 17:45right, Chris, see you tomorrow. Sure, good night, Captain,
- 17:48good night. Well Jordan, I'm waiting, waitning. What's it for you
- 17:56to tell me what this is all about. There's nothing to say, Jordan.
- 18:00The man who shot at you from the alley called out vengeance. This
- 18:03much, Chris told me. Therefore, I can assume that this man is
- 18:06after you for some hurt he believes you have inflicted upon you. It's close.
- 18:11What is it that you have done to in Jordan? Teach me,
- 18:14Sam, Jordan, how can you expect me to pay? Sam? I
- 18:17don't know. Then I shall let that pass. Jordan. Who is this
- 18:21man who shot at you. I'm afraid that's my business. I'll just handle
- 18:25it my own ways. Don't stop worrying about it. You got your hands
- 18:27full with Alexako. Fear not, we will capture Alexarker. Tell me,
- 18:33has Zarko something to do with this shooting? You mean that he throw those
- 18:37slugs at me? Now I meant exactly what I said. Does Zarco have
- 18:40anything to do with the shooting? Maybe? Jordan, you you are most
- 18:45exasperating, just a little trick I picked up in my travels. Very well,
- 18:48very well. I cannot force you to speak. However, I wish
- 18:52to warn you that if someone else is injured, some innocent party drawn into
- 18:56this private conflict of yours, I shall hold you responsible. Oh thanks,
- 19:00Sam, I swell of you. No one will get hurt, believe me,
- 19:03except maybe the friend of mine. For your sake, I hope you
- 19:06arrived. I would not wish to use my office, Jordan, to have
- 19:08you expelled from Cairo. I started out bright and early the next morning to
- 19:19see if I could find the man from Damascus. Stop number one was the
- 19:22House of sand Room twelve. I founded on the door. No answer.
- 19:27I rattled the doorknob, and the door came open. I went in.
- 19:30I could see why no one had bothered to throw the lock. The room
- 19:33was empty. Paul mar the man from Damascus, had done a quick checkout.
- 19:38I moved down to the front desk to see if I could get a
- 19:41forwarding address. Sitting in a rocking chair rolling back and forth was a wrinkled
- 19:45relic left over from the days of the Pharaohs. A shortling sound was coming
- 19:49from her throat, and then I saw why she was reading a US comic
- 19:52book called The Phantom Menace. A lady, Hey lady, you got a
- 19:57customer man. You are observing an old lady being devoured by pleasure. Well,
- 20:04I'm certainly glad you're having fun, but could you give me a minute?
- 20:07Oh the Phantom man it is captured the brick Brawn thrust team in wire
- 20:12and is dipping his head first into a barrel of pickle brine. One hundred
- 20:18times I have been consumed with you. Well, if you can grab hold
- 20:22of yourself for a minute, you can earn a pound note in my lefter.
- 20:26It suddenly left me fine. Look, I'm trying to get a forwarding
- 20:30address on number twelve. That would be a short fat man with a board
- 20:36spat a cellar of fly paper. That'd be a big man with bandages on
- 20:40his face. Cellar of death. This comes higher than fly paper? Could
- 20:45you make it two pounds? I could lash now that I find a fortune
- 20:52and my fingertips I cannot claim it. What does that mean? I do
- 20:56not know where your friend has gone, and indeed you I'm not the only
- 21:00one who is seeking him. A young lady came this morning. She said
- 21:04she was his wife. Where she go I gave her room ten. She
- 21:08said she would wait to see you for her husband returned. If you wish
- 21:12to see her, I can call no, no, no, What time
- 21:15did number twelve leave? Six this morning? By taxi? I called one?
- 21:19You know the driver? Do I know he may help him? No?
- 21:23Good? Evil talk name halli Ama residents three or three shari shaming.
- 21:33It is worth two pounds just to mention his name. He keep it and
- 21:38thanks? Going back to your reading, shall I shall once again beating X?
- 21:48And she did. I left her sitting there waiting. The pages looked
- 21:51up Holly. Ama cost me two more pounds to open him up, and
- 21:55only could say it was that he left mar off at an all night dive
- 21:57called the Harem, so that was my next stop. A couple of hundred
- 22:02pounds of back was pushing a wet rag over the counter in slow motion.
- 22:06Redheaded englishman deep in his cups was throwing dots at a picture of a deame
- 22:10short of clothes. What I was looking at was a guy at the end
- 22:12of the bar, tilling a bottle of beer. It was the knife man
- 22:15who had first taken me to see Paul Marr. I moved his way,
- 22:18but he saw me and let out for the back door. I took out
- 22:22after him, fast, like the super chief on a down grade. He
- 22:23took me through the backyard, over a fence, across an empty lot,
- 22:27but I put a stop to the marathon with the flying tackle, and we
- 22:30rolled into a mound hole. He reached for his knife, but I need
- 22:33him new. Fight started to go out of him. All right, where
- 22:36is he? Who? You know? Who? Let Damascus? Friend of
- 22:38yours? Paul mar How did you know he's Nate? It doesn't matter.
- 22:42I went Now it's this address. You're not worry, Jordan. He will
- 22:45come to you and I can't wait. I'll give it your knee the address
- 22:53I can not death you'll try a face full of money. All right ahead,
- 23:02they did one dozen forty two Sharaiafaca a small hotel by the name of
- 23:10Little Nile. Okay, I'm gonna put you on ice at the Tambourine.
- 23:14Chris will take care of You'll have a chance to tell to your boss alone.
- 23:23The Little Nile was a termite trap on Sharifakar, and Mar was holed
- 23:29up the second floor back. I stood in front of his door a few
- 23:30minutes later, listening, trying to catch any sounds from inside. Right near
- 23:36a thing, I tried the doorknob easily. The door was locked, so
- 23:40I took a deep breath and all the rock and wood gave way. First
- 23:44thing I saw in the darkened room was the figure sitting in a chair across
- 23:47the room, facing the door. The second thing I saw with the bandages
- 23:49around his face, so I knew it was Paul Mar. And the third
- 23:53thing I saw was the Italian made gun in his hand, pointing towards me.
- 23:57Why has kept you so long? Drod, Oh right, sorry,
- 24:00I didn't know you were waiting. I would not advance. Taught me any
- 24:04more steps, Jordan, that is wise. Well you have come I had
- 24:11assumed that if I did not kill you last night, would come to me.
- 24:15That saved me parading my conspicuous appearance through the Cairo streets. So you
- 24:22have found me, but unfortunately I have the gun. You're not gonna kill
- 24:26me here. Ma Sabaya knows you're after me. You'll never get out of
- 24:29the city with those bandages. You may be right, Jordan, perhaps I
- 24:33will not kill you. My original proposition still holds. Bring Alexako to me,
- 24:38and our little difference shall be forgotten. I've forgotten it already. Sure,
- 24:41then I want Zacho. I want him more than I want you or
- 24:45anything else. Bring me to Sundra's in town. Your wife, she's in
- 24:52Cairo looking for you. She's at the House of sand right now, waiting
- 24:56for you to come back. No I saw she came to me to ask
- 24:59about you. Know. She thinks a lot of you. She doesn't believe
- 25:03you're the kind of a guy to have a vendetta on. She doesn't believe
- 25:07you could kill me or Zarko regardless of what he did. You think,
- 25:11Stop it, Juddy, not unnerve me. Do not attempt to change the
- 25:15subject. I want Zacho even more than you. I will let you go
- 25:19if you help me. Yes, I shall show you my good faith by
- 25:25throwing my gun into the corner. It was a mistake. Mar You know
- 25:29I can't help you. I told you once already and that still goes.
- 25:30I'm not punning into a private feud what I am, George say, Wow,
- 25:37get around, don't you. I know you well enough Jordan to realize
- 25:40that you would not allow someone to shoot at you and then forget it.
- 25:42So when you would not tell me who had done it, I knew too
- 25:45that if I followed you long enough, you would lead me to him.
- 25:48You always do. Look, Sam, this is a private thing between March.
- 25:52I have told you once, Jordan. Violence is not a private matter.
- 25:56I will not allow killing if I can help it, and I will
- 25:59not allow you, Jordan or mister mar do interfire with the police capture of
- 26:02Alexako and you haven't got him yet, eh No, but I should have
- 26:04him in time, mister Marshall, not mister Maher. You will please remove
- 26:11the bandages from your face. I said that you will please remove your bandages.
- 26:17Letter do it? SAME's not killing very well? Very well? Then
- 26:22I shall remove my band address. I shall step into the light, gentlemen,
- 26:29so that you may see all, so that you may see what was
- 26:33once a face. I watched Paul Mar unwind the bandages, uncovering first what
- 26:38once was a chin, then the battered skin around the cheeks, the nose
- 26:44over the forheat. Then I noticed his stare, a peculiar, hard kind
- 26:48of stare. Then I saw where it came from a left eye that couldn't
- 26:55blink. There, there you have it. You can see why I feel
- 27:00as I do about Alexako. I am most sorry I had to subject you
- 27:07to this, mister Mar, but I still cannot allow a personal revenge to
- 27:11interfere with my execution of the law. It is customary and Cairo in affairs
- 27:15of this nature to use the following procedure. There is a train leaving Cairo
- 27:21for Alexandria in one hour. In five minutes, you will please be on
- 27:26the train, Sam and you Jordan, shall remain in my custody until mister
- 27:30Marr has left the city. And what about Alexako, He is and shall
- 27:33remain my problem. You have then one hour, mister ma I will meet
- 27:37you at the Cairo station to make certain you have boarded the train. Now
- 27:41you may put the bandages back on your face. Well, Sam and I
- 27:52left Paul Mar at the hotel and headed for police headquarters. We didn't talk
- 27:56much about Paul, was nothing to say. I was still trying to figure
- 28:00out in my mind what I could possibly have done to him and Damascus.
- 28:03But nothing came, and seeing him or what was left of him stirred no
- 28:07memory. At headquarters, Sam had a few things to do, so did
- 28:11I. I put in a call in the House of sand and asked for
- 28:15Sandra Mar. Yes, this is Sandra Mar mis Mar, This is Rocky
- 28:18Jordan. Oh, how did you know I was here? Never mind that,
- 28:22it's something I want to tell you. How about Paul sort of throw
- 28:26your clothes in a suitcase and go back to Damascus. Oh, I thought
- 28:30you had some good news for me. I thought you understood. I will
- 28:33go no place without Paul. Well, you're not going to find him in
- 28:37Cairo. The police are moving him out. Police what had the police to
- 28:41do with Paul? Paul will tell you if he wants to. Now go
- 28:44on, you got a better chance of seeing him again in Damascus and see
- 28:47if he can keep him out of trouble. Huh, good luck. Well,
- 28:52that was that. All the remains to see Paul mar climb on the
- 28:55train for Alexandria and hope he could straightened himself out, and hope too that
- 29:00he and his wife Sandra would get together. Well. A little while later
- 29:03I drove to the train station with Sam still in police customers. There weren't
- 29:07many people there on the holiday afternoon, and standing near the end of the
- 29:11platform, next to a large sign of the flying red Horse that accented his
- 29:14white bandages, was the man we were looking for, Paul Mark. Sam
- 29:18and I walked up to him and he glared at us through the slits in
- 29:21his wrappings. Well, mister Maro, you will be leaving Cairo in a
- 29:23few moments. If after a year has passed you wish to return to our
- 29:27city, write me a letter explaining your reasons, and I still see what
- 29:32can be done to make Cairo available to you once more. Mar nod As
- 29:36he climbed on the train and had headed out of the city. Sam and
- 29:40I turned and started back to his car. That's when it hit me and
- 29:44I took off in double time. Doesn't well before a train ride. I
- 29:48didn't given a come on, I chased down the platform and caught the train.
- 29:52On the corner of my eye, I could see Sam climb under the
- 29:53train father down the line. Then I shouted through the cars, going from
- 29:56one to another, looking for the man and bandages. I traveled through four
- 30:00cars before I finally spotted up when he saw me. I guess he figured
- 30:03what I had on my mind, because he took off fast going the other
- 30:04way, but I kept right after him. The train had picked up speed,
- 30:07perching him from side to side, then going around the band The momentum
- 30:11pinned him momentarily against the seat, and I was on it. His fish
- 30:15started working in the solid mind. We had ourselves to find a little fight
- 30:17there, rolling around the floor of the moving train till Sam Sabajah caught up
- 30:19with this and pulled the gun. I put a quick stop in the fight.
- 30:22George, you would please explain what the meaning of this is? Sure,
- 30:26glad to Sam. I have him take off his bandage, But Georgie
- 30:30and I don't take off the bandages, and I think you will verywhere.
- 30:34You would please remove the bandages, mister mar take him off, buddy,
- 30:38I'll take him off for it. Yeah, that's just stuff. Yeah,
- 30:45just a little more, let Sam see who you really are. Well,
- 30:52yea, I said, not poor Mar at all, but the guy you've
- 30:56been looking for for weeks, the guy who's been trying to escape your dragnet
- 31:00and get out of the city. Meet Alex Zarko. Well, the thing
- 31:10came apart at the seams. It was all an elaborate plan of Zarko's.
- 31:14The police had him trapped in the city, needed a way out, so
- 31:17he got his knife man to dig up Paul Mar in Damascus bring him to
- 31:19town. Then he had Mar all wrapped up in bandages, create a fuss
- 31:23like his revenge against me, which was strictly a phony, nothing too serious,
- 31:27just enough to get himself run out of Cairo. Then Zarcho takes his
- 31:30place, wraps himself in the bandages, and starts to leave, almost with
- 31:34a police escort. It would have worked fine except for one thing. Mars
- 31:40disfigured face and his left eye that couldn't blink. Zarcho couldn't control his and
- 31:45standing on the platform of the train station, he blinked his eye once and
- 31:49that was once too awful. Well, all that remained was Paul Mar and
- 31:56his face, and Sandra and later in Sabayah, we've got talking about that,
- 32:02Jordan. Where do you suppose Paul Mary is now in the house of
- 32:07sand I told him Sandra was there waiting for him. You realize, of
- 32:10course, that I must send some men to apprehend him. Yeah. Why
- 32:14do you suppose he allowed himself to aid elk Zarko. Put yourself in his
- 32:19place, face like his and a lot of desperation. He's working a business
- 32:22deal, getting money anyway he could figuring he use the dough of plastic surgery
- 32:28job make him look like a human being. Again, Yes, quite so,
- 32:32you understand, mar We'll have a jail sentence to serve for aiding a
- 32:36criminal, and it may be possible for me to confiscate the money Zarko gave
- 32:40you. Sure, if you worked on it, you could possibly take the
- 32:45dough from That is, if you don't forget that he's got Are you suggesting,
- 32:49Jordan, that I deliberately allow myself to forget that a financial arrangement existed
- 32:53between Martin Sarko. That's try to say, Jordan, I have always suspected
- 32:59you are an un scrupulous man. It's sure, I am remember the time
- 33:02I tried to sell that many Carlo Swindler a half interest in the Tombs of
- 33:07Memooks. Remember no, no, I guess I've forgotten. Perhaps I am
- 33:16getting old. My memory is not what it used to be. Thanks,
- 33:23see you soon. It's CBS again at the same time next week for another
- 33:37story of adventure and intrigue, when we take you back to Cairo and the
- 33:40Cafe Tambourine run by Rocky Jordan's. Rocky Jordan's, starring Jack Moyles in the
- 33:52title role, is produced and directed by Cliff Powell, with original music by
- 33:55Richard Durant. Tonight's story by Adrian Jondeau and Larry Roman. Light with Luigi
- 34:01will be heard tonight at eight over most of these stations. Larry Poor speaking,
- 34:07This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System. Welcome back. Well,
- 34:27just a great episode. Here I mentioned that for all but the last season,
- 34:34Jack Moyles played the role of Rocky Jordan. The series was canceled in
- 34:37nineteen fifty and returned as a summer replacement in nineteen fifty one from June through
- 34:45August with George Raft starring in the role, and Raft did an audition in
- 34:50the script he used from for the audition was actually the Man from Damascus.
- 34:55Rocky Jordan was so well beloved that it was one of those series CBS really
- 35:04took a look at bringing back for five day a week serials, and in
- 35:07the case of Rocky Jordan, it had that background of being on five days
- 35:15a week for two years from forty five to forty seven as a man named
- 35:20Jordan. And in that case, for the revived Rocky Jordan, they had
- 35:25Jackie Jack Moyles once again do the audition, though it didn't quite make it
- 35:30all right. Well, that's that. I did want to also share some
- 35:35of the items we're offering as part of our listener support campaign for those of
