- 0:04Speaker 1: We've got some breaking news, Alden Gonzalez reporting that the
- 0:07Speaker 1: Angels and Anthony Rendon are and talks about buying out
- 0:10Speaker 1: the final year of his contract. This according to one
- 0:13Speaker 1: of Alden's sources, and the expectation is that Anthony Rendon
- 0:17Speaker 1: will retire. What an era this one has been. This
- 0:21Speaker 1: would have been the last year of a seven year,
- 0:24Speaker 1: two hundred and forty five million dollar contract. It is
- 0:28Speaker 1: easily one of the worst contracts in Major League Baseball history.
- 0:32Speaker 1: He didn't play much, he didn't contribute much. Kevin Polar
- 0:36Speaker 1: played with him for a season with the Angels. What
- 0:39Speaker 1: do you think about this? Dude, you experienced Anthony Rendon,
- 0:42Speaker 1: who I think is somewhat misunderstood. I covered him for
- 0:44Speaker 1: years when he was with the Nationals. I mean, the
- 0:47Speaker 1: easy way to put it is, doesn't love baseball. Nice,
- 0:51Speaker 1: chill guy to be around your thoughts.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I was his teammate in Anaheim. I didn't really
- 0:58Speaker 2: get a chance to be on the field them very
- 1:00Speaker 2: much because he was also hurt that year. But yeah,
- 1:03Speaker 2: I think Anthony Rendon is one of the most misunderstood players,
- 1:08Speaker 2: maybe of all time. And he's very outspoken in his beliefs.
- 1:12Speaker 2: But he's not saying anything that most I wouldn't say
- 1:17Speaker 2: most that some other players aren't saying. People forget that baseball.
- 1:22Speaker 2: To a lot of us, yes, we do love it
- 1:24Speaker 2: and it's and we're passionate about it. But at the
- 1:26Speaker 2: end of the day, it is a job and the
- 1:29Speaker 2: joy for a lot of people. When you get to
- 1:31Speaker 2: the major league some of it is taken away from you.
- 1:34Speaker 2: I felt it towards the end of my career. I
- 1:36Speaker 2: was very passionate about being a baseball player. I love
- 1:39Speaker 2: the game of baseball. Part of the reason I'm still
- 1:41Speaker 2: sitting here talking baseball is because I do love it.
- 1:44Speaker 2: But does some of the joy get taken away from
- 1:47Speaker 2: you when you get into the business side of baseball,
- 1:50Speaker 2: and at any given day you can be released or
- 1:52Speaker 2: you can be traded, and you feel like you have
- 1:55Speaker 2: a value and it's not reached that So, yes, it
- 1:57Speaker 2: is a job, and not all of us loves show
- 2:00Speaker 2: going up to our job every day. And Anthony Rendon
- 2:02Speaker 2: just happened to be one of those guys who was
- 2:05Speaker 2: super super talented at baseball, and probably early on in
- 2:09Speaker 2: his life in order to get to Rice University and
- 2:12Speaker 2: through his time at Rice, university, worked extremely hard to
- 2:16Speaker 2: be one of the best players in baseball, was drafted
- 2:18Speaker 2: second overall. You know, won a World Series with the Nationals.
- 2:23Speaker 2: You know, jumped on the scene as one of the
- 2:24Speaker 2: best right handed hitters in baseball. And it's very unfortunate that,
- 2:28Speaker 2: you know, his time with the Angels was not good.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Like you said, to put it bluntly, it's going to
- 2:34Speaker 2: go down as one of the worst contracts of all time.
- 2:36Speaker 2: And you know, we are in the season of the
- 2:39Speaker 2: holiday season, and I think we talked about on the
- 2:43Speaker 2: show earlier, you know what we're thankful for, and I
- 2:45Speaker 2: think both sides are very thankful for this to happen.
- 2:49Speaker 2: The Angels are thankful to finally move on from Anthony Rendon,
- 2:52Speaker 2: hopefully get a little bit of payroll flexibility, and Anthony
- 2:56Speaker 2: Rendon is just very thankful that the Angels are willing
- 2:58Speaker 2: to do this where he no longer has to show
- 3:01Speaker 2: up to a place that he doesn't want to be anymore.
- 3:03Speaker 2: He wants to be at home with his family, donate
- 3:06Speaker 2: to his church, and go out and farm, because that's
- 3:09Speaker 2: really what he's passionate about.
- 3:12Speaker 3: I think there's a lot of people that can associate
- 3:16Speaker 3: with Anthony Rendon in the sense that you know what,
- 3:19Speaker 3: they might not like their job, it's not an excuse
- 3:22Speaker 3: to not go out and do it.
- 3:24Speaker 4: I don't care what your job is. Like.
- 3:27Speaker 3: The biggest thing that an employer, because he's an employee,
- 3:30Speaker 3: needs needs to expect from his employees is good effort
- 3:36Speaker 3: and a good attitude. Now, if you don't have those things,
- 3:41Speaker 3: I don't care. If you're the best at your job,
- 3:44Speaker 3: no matter what the job is, employer is not going
- 3:47Speaker 3: to be too pleased.
- 3:48Speaker 4: And I think if.
- 3:51Speaker 3: He would have gone out and played to his fullest extent,
- 3:54Speaker 3: in the sense of he's out there every day, he's
- 3:57Speaker 3: playing through injuries, then I think we could get him
- 4:00Speaker 3: a little bit of a break. But when when somebody
- 4:03Speaker 3: says they don't enjoy baseball, or they don't they don't
- 4:07Speaker 3: enjoy being they would rather do other things, I get that.
- 4:10Speaker 3: But it's afforded him the opportunity to be able to
- 4:13Speaker 3: do those other things, to be able to farm, to
- 4:15Speaker 3: be able to like nobody's holding a gun to your
- 4:18Speaker 3: head to play baseball. You don't have to play baseball.
- 4:21Speaker 3: You can go and find a different job. And I
- 4:23Speaker 3: think I think the fact that his career will be
- 4:29Speaker 3: marred by the fact that he signed this contract and
- 4:32Speaker 3: people don't feel like he gave his best effort. I
- 4:35Speaker 3: think it is going to completely overshadow what an incredibly
- 4:39Speaker 3: talented player. He was home hit an opposite field home
- 4:43Speaker 3: run against US in spring training when I was at
- 4:47Speaker 3: the Phillies, So it had to be somewhere in like
- 4:49Speaker 3: twenty eleven, twelve thirteen, somewhere in there, right out of Rice,
- 4:54Speaker 3: and I was like, Wow, how that.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Guy hit an opposite field home run?
- 4:57Speaker 3: And Joe Savory went to and he knew about Anthony
- 5:01Speaker 3: Rendon and this guy is He goes, this guy is
- 5:04Speaker 3: the one of the most unassuming opposite field power bats
- 5:07Speaker 3: that you will ever see, And I was like, whoa relax, Joe,
- 5:10Speaker 3: like that is That's well? He was spot on. He
- 5:14Speaker 3: couldn't have been more spot on, and it's a shame
- 5:16Speaker 3: that his career ended this way, especially when he signed
- 5:20Speaker 3: over at the Angels. Twenty twenty was the COVID year.
- 5:23Speaker 3: I think he was tenth in MVP voting, so it
- 5:27Speaker 3: was coming off and after that. Before that, he was
- 5:30Speaker 3: third in MVP voting in twenty nineteen for the World
- 5:33Speaker 3: Champion National, so there's extreme levels of talent in there,
- 5:38Speaker 3: and it just it sucks that these last you know,
- 5:40Speaker 3: this contract ended the way that he did. And maybe
- 5:44Speaker 3: he'll say it was injuries. People from the outside would say,
- 5:48Speaker 3: maybe it wasn't all the injuries. Maybe it was more
- 5:51Speaker 3: the you know, lack of desire to show up every
- 5:55Speaker 3: single day, which you have to do in the sport
- 5:57Speaker 3: of baseball.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Hey, for all the parents out there with teens, it's

- 7:00Speaker 1: If you spent any semblance of time with him or
- 7:03Speaker 1: around those that know him well, you would know from
- 7:06Speaker 1: a very early time in his major league career that
- 7:09Speaker 1: he did not like the major league life. That is
- 7:12Speaker 1: a fact, right. You guys were players. I was a
- 7:15Speaker 1: reporter back then. I would cover like him and others
- 7:18Speaker 1: in the postseason, and you would hear that from him.
- 7:20Speaker 1: He was pretty open about it, right, I Mean, he
- 7:22Speaker 1: wasn't walking around like fuck this, fuck that, but it
- 7:25Speaker 1: was more just like, yeah, like and I don't care,
- 7:27Speaker 1: this is not that important to me, And I think
- 7:29Speaker 1: KP that is part of what made him so incredible
- 7:32Speaker 1: early in his career, Like he'd step up there the
- 7:34Speaker 1: ultimate low heartbeat. I truly don't care what happens here.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I just know that I'm really good and I'm going
- 7:40Speaker 1: to do my work. What changed is he signs the
- 7:42Speaker 1: big contract and just really said I'm not into this.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Body breaks down a little bit too. And he's always
- 7:48Speaker 1: had injuries. I mean that was part of what didn't
- 7:50Speaker 1: make him say a number one pick. I think he
- 7:52Speaker 1: was a little lower, like six or something like that
- 7:54Speaker 1: out of Rice because he had injuries there too. But
- 7:57Speaker 1: the fact of the matter is this is a guy
- 7:58Speaker 1: that did sign a big deal and then you basically
- 8:01Speaker 1: never heard from him again.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I mean I played with him a long time ago.
- 8:05Speaker 2: He hasn't really changed to who he was as a
- 8:08Speaker 2: person and how he felt about baseball. I honestly was
- 8:12Speaker 2: really shocked when he became a free agent and he
- 8:14Speaker 2: signed the seven year deal. I thought he would be
- 8:17Speaker 2: a guy that would front load the heck out of
- 8:20Speaker 2: his contract, maybe sign a three or four year deal,
- 8:22Speaker 2: maybe five at the moke so he can get his
- 8:24Speaker 2: ten years. I don't really know how important that was
- 8:27Speaker 2: to him, but I saw him frontloading a deal for
- 8:30Speaker 2: like two or three years, make it a ton of money,
- 8:33Speaker 2: riding off in the sunset. But to Crassey's point, you know,
- 8:36Speaker 2: when you go out and you sign a big deal
- 8:39Speaker 2: and a lengthy deal for an organization, you owe it
- 8:42Speaker 2: to them to put your best foot forward. And I
- 8:44Speaker 2: don't believe people inside of that clubhouse, people in that
- 8:48Speaker 2: front office ownership group, believe that Anthony Rendome put his
- 8:52Speaker 2: best effort every single day when he shut up. You know,
- 8:57Speaker 2: none more evident than last year. Yes, did he have
- 8:59Speaker 2: a hip surgery. Yes, you can look at medical records
- 9:01Speaker 2: and stuff. Did he actually have a surgery. But the
- 9:03Speaker 2: fact that he never showed up at spring training at
- 9:07Speaker 2: the Angels Complex, never really checked in in Anaheim with
- 9:10Speaker 2: the medical staff, kind of stayed at home and kind
- 9:13Speaker 2: of did his own rehab, And maybe because of his
- 9:16Speaker 2: lengthy injury history, he felt like, I need to get
- 9:18Speaker 2: away from the team. I need to do what's best
- 9:20Speaker 2: for me. Anthony Rendon rehab with my own people. But
- 9:25Speaker 2: if I'm an employer and this is one of my employees,
- 9:29Speaker 2: I'd like him to be around the team. I'd like
- 9:31Speaker 2: to check in with him, make sure he's doing everything
- 9:34Speaker 2: in his power to get back on the field, because
- 9:36Speaker 2: we gave him a large investment to be part of
- 9:39Speaker 2: our organization and help turn things around. So you know,
- 9:43Speaker 2: I understand what you're saying Cratsey, like, you gave this
- 9:46Speaker 2: guy a ton of money to kind of go side
- 9:49Speaker 2: by side with Trout and try to take this organization
- 9:52Speaker 2: to places you thought that they can get to with
- 9:54Speaker 2: these two guys kind of anchoring the middle of your lineup.
- 9:57Speaker 2: No one says these things about Trout by the way.
- 10:00Speaker 2: He's had injuries over the last couple of years, but
- 10:02Speaker 2: he's passionate, he cares, he's around the team. I was
- 10:05Speaker 2: with him during his injury. I saw how hard he
- 10:08Speaker 2: worked to try to come back. So I think when
- 10:10Speaker 2: you were very vocal about not wanting to play and
- 10:13Speaker 2: not loving the sport, taking all this money and then
- 10:16Speaker 2: not really putting your best foot forward to at least
- 10:19Speaker 2: go out there and try to post. People are gonna
- 10:22Speaker 2: have a problem with.
- 10:22Speaker 3: It, and physically sometimes you can't be on the field.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Adam Wainwright said, one of the one of the toughest
- 10:29Speaker 3: years for Hims but for him, but also one of
- 10:32Speaker 3: the one of the most rewarding years was the year
- 10:36Speaker 3: he had Tommy John surgery. He had to get the surgery,
- 10:39Speaker 3: and then every day after he was done his rehab,
- 10:42Speaker 3: he was able to invest in his teammates. He was
- 10:44Speaker 3: able to invest in those relationships. When you pay a
- 10:46Speaker 3: guy two hundred million dollars, When you pay a guy
- 10:50Speaker 3: one hundred and fifty million dollars, she probably when you
- 10:52Speaker 3: pay a guy thirty million dollars, your expectation is, yes,
- 10:56Speaker 3: they're gonna be able to do some things on the field,
- 10:58Speaker 3: but the impact that they have on the entire roster,
- 11:01Speaker 3: the entire organization is going to come back to that
- 11:05Speaker 3: team four fold. And that's how and that's how you
- 11:08Speaker 3: prove your worth in a contract. Sometimes physically you just
- 11:12Speaker 3: can't do it. Sometimes you can't even get on the field.
- 11:16Speaker 3: But man, you can show up every day with a
- 11:17Speaker 3: great attitude and really lift up your teammates and really
- 11:20Speaker 3: lift up those people. And so for me to hear
- 11:23Speaker 3: that he was hurt and didn't show up to spring
- 11:25Speaker 3: training feelings hurt or not, like.
- 11:29Speaker 4: There's there's a value.
- 11:30Speaker 3: There's a value add there when you're a person that
- 11:33Speaker 3: wants to be around other people and help lift them up.
- 11:36Speaker 4: And it's tough. It's tough when you hear when you
- 11:39Speaker 4: hear stories like that.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Yeah, and I remember the discrepancy and the team never
- 11:43Speaker 1: backed down saying that he had a shin bruise. I
- 11:46Speaker 1: think this was twenty twenty three and rind O inside
- 11:49Speaker 1: said it was a fracture. I mean, that gets a
- 11:51Speaker 1: little crazy. There's not a lot we can do on
- 11:53Speaker 1: the commenting front. We're not privy to that medical information.
- 11:57Speaker 1: But when the team's coming out that steadfatt, it does
- 12:01Speaker 1: get interesting. You don't see that very often.
- 12:03Speaker 2: And hey, I.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Mean I have quotes. I'm looking back at Perrimanas the
- 12:07Speaker 1: GM years back saying I think he's gonna win comeback
- 12:10Speaker 1: player the year after one of his years. So it
- 12:11Speaker 1: was a last season. Ron Washington, when he first got
- 12:14Speaker 1: the job, spoke on our show and said one of
- 12:16Speaker 1: his first phone calls is to rend own. It's not
- 12:18Speaker 1: like the Angels gave up on him right away, and
- 12:20Speaker 1: they backed him publicly quite a bit. So this finally
- 12:24Speaker 1: gets to the divorce phase with one year to spare,
- 12:27Speaker 1: and I think we should end it this way, KP,
- 12:29Speaker 1: because you spent time with the Angels. How valuable is
- 12:31Speaker 1: it for them to get the closure here a year early?
- 12:34Speaker 1: It did feel like it was a dark cloud over
- 12:37Speaker 1: the team in a certain aspect, right, and it could
- 12:40Speaker 1: have gotten ugly this year where he doesn't want to
- 12:41Speaker 1: play clearly, and he would have to just kind of
- 12:44Speaker 1: be there and show up and do his thing. And
- 12:46Speaker 1: it's just I don't know if you want to call
- 12:48Speaker 1: it dead weight, but thirty eight million dollars oh this season,
- 12:51Speaker 1: thirty five years old, doesn't want to play the game.
- 12:53Speaker 1: They probably will do some deferrals that'll open up a
- 12:56Speaker 1: little bit of payroll for this season. So this is
- 12:58Speaker 1: a huge win for Angels and for Angels players, right.
- 13:02Speaker 2: It's a huge win. And honestly, I think it's potentially
- 13:05Speaker 2: a year too late. You know, when he had that
- 13:07Speaker 2: hip surgery and potentially he was going to miss the
- 13:10Speaker 2: entire year. And sometimes you don't know until you know,
- 13:13Speaker 2: because you know, I was there the year before and
- 13:16Speaker 2: even though Anthony Rendon was hurt, he was around. Like
- 13:21Speaker 2: I said, you don't know until you know. And then
- 13:22Speaker 2: an entire year where he's not around, and then he
- 13:26Speaker 2: has no reason not to be there next year because
- 13:28Speaker 2: he is healthy. Maybe you learn from his absence this
- 13:31Speaker 2: year that maybe it was this dark cloud that they
- 13:33Speaker 2: needed to get rid of. Maybe there's if he shows up,
- 13:36Speaker 2: you know, what kind of player is he going to be?
- 13:38Speaker 2: Does he even want to be there? What kind of
- 13:40Speaker 2: work ethic he's going to be. The Angels are trying
- 13:42Speaker 2: to change their culture a little bit. You know. They
- 13:44Speaker 2: brought in a young manager, Kurt Suzuki, who probably just
- 13:48Speaker 2: doesn't want to have to deal with this sort of
- 13:50Speaker 2: thing his first time being a manager. It's long overdue.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Good for the Angels, you know, whether they get some
- 13:57Speaker 2: financial flexibility, that's one thing. Guess that would help their
- 14:00Speaker 2: organization go out and get some better players. But did
- 14:03Speaker 2: not have to deal with him being in spring training,
- 14:05Speaker 2: maybe potentially influencing some of the younger players to know,
- 14:09Speaker 2: not go hard in drills, or not take ground balls,
- 14:12Speaker 2: or not do certain things, or learn from him in
- 14:14Speaker 2: maybe a negative way. It's long overdue, and hopefully it's
- 14:18Speaker 2: something that the Angels do have a dark pass of
- 14:22Speaker 2: having signings not work out. It goes way beyond Anthony Rendon,
- 14:26Speaker 2: So hopefully this is somewhere where they could kind of
- 14:28Speaker 2: just move forward and not be a little gun shy
- 14:31Speaker 2: when it signing some guys to long term deals in
- 14:33Speaker 2: the future.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Last note here in spring training, when it was announced
- 14:37Speaker 1: that he was getting hip surgery, Ken Rosenthal did report
- 14:39Speaker 1: there was no insurance on that contract ever, and that
- 14:42Speaker 1: owner Ardi Morino does not do that for his players
- 14:44Speaker 1: because of the cost of that insurance, and he ends
- 14:49Speaker 1: up at about twenty five percent of games played over
- 14:53Speaker 1: over five years now six years, I guess, and really
- 14:55Speaker 1: the seven that is getting bought out. One estimate that
- 14:59Speaker 1: rosenth I've got was about fifty million dollars to benefit
- 15:02Speaker 1: back if they did have insurance, so it would have
- 15:05Speaker 1: covered some but nothing close to the two forty five
- 15:08Speaker 1: mill that was essentially a waste for the Angels during
- 15:11Speaker 1: this time period. So anyway, the relationship seems to finally
- 15:15Speaker 1: be over and Anthony Rendon will probably be retiring from
- 15:18Speaker 1: Major League Baseball. It's baseball the way it should be
- 15:20Speaker 1: covered here on FT. Give us a sub if you can,
- 15:23Speaker 1: please and leave us a comment with your thoughts on this. Kratz,

- 16:31Speaker 1: coach Ethan Katz, not to be confused with excellent amateur
- 16:37Speaker 1: player Ethan Kratz. Ethan Katz will be pitching coach of
- 16:42Speaker 1: the Astros. This according to Chandler Rome, who just came
- 16:46Speaker 1: out with this before the show started. Kats is going
- 16:49Speaker 1: to replace Bill Murphy who left for the Pirates last month.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Murphy or Katz, either of those names familiar for you guys.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I know Ethan Katz. He was the former high
- 17:02Speaker 2: school pitching coach at Harvard Westlake, which you know is
- 17:06Speaker 2: the home of Max Freed, Jack Flaherty, Luis g Aledo.
- 17:11Speaker 2: You know, some of those guys were there at Chicago
- 17:13Speaker 2: when I was there, and maybe it's a little bit
- 17:16Speaker 2: of a recruiting tool to maybe sign a guy like
- 17:19Speaker 2: ge Aledo to come to Houston, maybe on a one
- 17:21Speaker 2: year deal. But he obviously has a track record of
- 17:24Speaker 2: you know, working with some amateur guys in high school
- 17:27Speaker 2: and has kind of worked his way up to the
- 17:29Speaker 2: big leagues.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Luis Giolito would be the Spanish brother of Lucas Gioldo.
- 17:37Speaker 4: So I think you meant you said, Luis, but.
- 17:42Speaker 2: He's going to Houston, to Houston for me, so I
- 17:45Speaker 2: give it for me.
- 17:46Speaker 3: The Astros are running a two major league pitching coordination,
- 17:52Speaker 3: and I don't know how that works for hitting, Like
- 17:56Speaker 3: I don't think it works for hitting. You need somebody
- 17:58Speaker 3: that's always like the top guy. So I don't know
- 18:00Speaker 3: how they're doing it at the Astros, but they're doing
- 18:03Speaker 3: it successfully.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal put out a notes column. He also put
- 18:08Speaker 1: out a second Fair Territory this week a day early,
- 18:11Speaker 1: so you can check that out. It was live before
- 18:13Speaker 1: the show. If you want to catch it. After foul territory,
- 18:16Speaker 1: we'll get to at least one of the notes here
- 18:17Speaker 1: to start. This is an Eric Kratz special for your
- 18:20Speaker 1: former team. Ken wrote, the Brewers are fretting over their payroll.
- 18:23Speaker 1: According to people briefed on their plans, there's possibility that
- 18:26Speaker 1: they'll need to subtract in order to add, and that
- 18:29Speaker 1: again brings up the Freddy Peralta question. The only problem
- 18:33Speaker 1: I keep having with this, Kratz is from a payroll perspective.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Eight million bucks for Freddy P. Eight million bucks. I
- 18:39Speaker 1: know that the Brewers have to be tight, but eight
- 18:41Speaker 1: million bucks for a starter, and they have plenty of
- 18:43Speaker 1: league minimum or early arbitration guys, that doesn't seem to
- 18:46Speaker 1: be the problem spot.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Not the problem spot. I mean, I get it. They
- 18:51Speaker 3: probably didn't think Big WU was going to accept it.
- 18:53Speaker 3: But I know the Brewers are definitely thinking we extend this.
- 18:57Speaker 3: We would like to have him in twenty two millions,
- 18:59Speaker 3: not a big Does that inhibit them from doing another
- 19:02Speaker 3: twenty million dollars one year deal? Yes, but Freddy P
- 19:06Speaker 3: ain't the answer. And I mean twenty million for Freddy
- 19:10Speaker 3: P wouldn't be that big a deal, but it's only
- 19:12Speaker 3: eight million. If you're looking to cut payroll, you have
- 19:15Speaker 3: to be more creative than getting rid of Freddy p
- 19:18Speaker 3: unless you get a return that immediately puts your team
- 19:21Speaker 3: right back in a ninety seven wins season again, and
- 19:24Speaker 3: that's going to be a tough return.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Woodrif's making three times what Freddy Peralta is making. Hey,
- 19:30Speaker 1: I agreed with the decision. If you think he looks
- 19:33Speaker 1: like the big wou of old, then you do it.
- 19:35Speaker 1: But if you really were concerned, you don't offer that.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Yep.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Two Orioles hirings per source telling Rock Obacco, who covers
- 19:45Speaker 1: the Orioles for Mass and he said Mike Shilt will
- 19:47Speaker 1: be upper level coordinator of instruction and Samuel Vega will
- 19:50Speaker 1: be lower level coordinator of instruction. Shilt's the name that
- 19:54Speaker 1: stands out. He retired as a manager. But you wanted
- 19:57Speaker 1: to get the schedule reconfigured. So this does make sense,
- 20:01Speaker 1: And then we can show the next one too before
- 20:03Speaker 1: we get a quick reaction. This coming from Robert Murray.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Brandon Hyde is in talks to join the Rais in
- 20:08Speaker 1: an undisclosed role. Nothing done, but he's expected to land
- 20:12Speaker 1: in Tampa. There were some people pretty surprised that Hye
- 20:14Speaker 1: didn't get deeper into an interview process with any teams
- 20:17Speaker 1: for a manager role. Maybe that happens next year. Any
- 20:21Speaker 1: thoughts from each of you got a quick hit.
- 20:26Speaker 5: Cool.
- 20:27Speaker 2: The Mike Schuld thing's a little bit interesting to me too,
- 20:29Speaker 2: I mean from everything we had heard, and I was
- 20:32Speaker 2: on the show the day that he retired or was
- 20:36Speaker 2: relieved of his duties, and it seemed like his health
- 20:38Speaker 2: was in Jepardy. But for him to kind of jump
- 20:40Speaker 2: back into a baseball role seems a little bit odd
- 20:43Speaker 2: to me. Maybe we don't know the entirety of the
- 20:44Speaker 2: story in San Diego, or maybe he just loves baseball
- 20:48Speaker 2: so much and just couldn't be in the fight every
- 20:50Speaker 2: single day. But I found that a little bit interesting
- 20:52Speaker 2: that he would leave the padres and then take on
- 20:55Speaker 2: another role.
- 20:57Speaker 1: That's a lesser. I mean, this is probably a that
- 21:00Speaker 1: requires less time, though, right, because I know that was
- 21:02Speaker 1: a big thing for him.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't. I don't mean he's he has no
- 21:08Speaker 2: he's not married, he has no kids. Like I get
- 21:10Speaker 2: the time. He probably wants some time to himself, But
- 21:13Speaker 2: I don't think the time was the thing that was
- 21:16Speaker 2: the reason he left San Diego.
- 21:17Speaker 4: I think it was the stress, the drama.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Hey, one more little nibble from Ken Rosenthal's notes column
- 21:26Speaker 1: which came out recently, and then he hit on most
- 21:28Speaker 1: of these topics on fair territory, which is out there.
- 21:31Speaker 1: He said the Reds versatility will keep them active on
- 21:34Speaker 1: numerous fronts because many of their players can play multiple
- 21:38Speaker 1: positions and it gives them flexibility to make moves that
- 21:41Speaker 1: fit their needs. Here are some examples, according to people
- 21:45Speaker 1: familiar with their thinking who spoke to Ken. He said
- 21:49Speaker 1: they could add a first baseman and they could put
- 21:51Speaker 1: Spencer Steer in left field. They could add a center
- 21:54Speaker 1: fielder and move TJ. Friedel to left field. They could
- 21:58Speaker 1: also add a right handed hitting outfielder to a platoon
- 22:02Speaker 1: with Will Benson, who's a left handed bat. What do
- 22:05Speaker 1: you think, Kratz?
- 22:06Speaker 3: Stop stop, you've been doing this. You've been doing this.
- 22:10Speaker 3: You have all these guys.
- 22:11Speaker 4: You have TJ.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Friedel, you have you have Spencer Steer, you have Matt McClain,
- 22:17Speaker 3: you have La de la Cruz. Like, stop, go get
- 22:21Speaker 3: somebody that is going to be one position, solidifies that spot,
- 22:26Speaker 3: and stop going out and getting the GMR Candelario. When
- 22:30Speaker 3: you already have utility infielders. Stop going out and getting
- 22:35Speaker 3: like guys who like you watch them go play really
- 22:38Speaker 3: well somewhere and then you're like, oh we want that.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Oh it didn't work out. We're the Reds. We can't
- 22:42Speaker 3: afford to make mistakes. Stop go make one solidified spot
- 22:47Speaker 3: add to your bullpen and your starting rotation is already boss,
- 22:51Speaker 3: So stop doing this. Stop like going around, like touching
- 22:56Speaker 3: the edge of the pool, like jump in swim. Make
- 22:59Speaker 3: the playoffs and a deep run in the playoffs.
- 23:02Speaker 1: So you want one big star, You want one or
- 23:05Speaker 1: I would say mid.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Range to high level I play, I got the I
- 23:12Speaker 2: want Pete Alonzo. I want to watch him hit seventy
- 23:15Speaker 2: five homers that's just at the home games.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Yeah, that that's a good fit for them.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Could you imagine watching him hit there for eighty one
- 23:27Speaker 2: games a year. He would make that place look so
- 23:30Speaker 2: small it would be unbelievable. He would hit sixty You
- 23:33Speaker 2: would hit sixty plus homers playing in.
- 23:35Speaker 4: That ball play.
- 23:36Speaker 3: I wanted them to get Anthony Santander last year to
- 23:38Speaker 3: be that Latin player who will help Elie de la
- 23:42Speaker 3: Cruz make that next step. Sometimes you need stars that
- 23:46Speaker 3: look up to older stars, you know from where you
- 23:49Speaker 3: know the.
- 23:49Speaker 4: Latin, the Latin connection there.
- 23:51Speaker 3: That's the kind of thing that I wanted because Ellie
- 23:53Speaker 3: can't be a oh ps plus of one oh seven
- 23:57Speaker 3: his entire career.
- 24:02Speaker 1: If you are still carrying a clunky leather brick that
- 24:05Speaker 1: can be mistaken for an old school wallet, may I
- 24:09Speaker 1: introduce you to what Eric Kratz is getting himself for
- 24:12Speaker 1: the holidays.
- 24:14Speaker 3: I mean, this is the greatest wallet that I've ever
- 24:16Speaker 3: seen in my life. Your credit card's fitting here, it's adjustable,
- 24:21Speaker 3: lifetime guarantee. What like this is a must have for
- 24:26Speaker 3: the holidays.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Absolute must have Ridge Olive matt That is the design
- 24:31Speaker 1: that Kratz has right now, and you can get a
- 24:33Speaker 1: hold of that. There's over fifty plus colors and styles
- 24:35Speaker 1: to choose from. Over at Ridge. You can even get
- 24:38Speaker 1: a wallet that features every NFL, MLB or college team.
- 24:41Speaker 1: And for a limited time, Ridge is having their huge
- 24:44Speaker 1: Black Friday sale. Head to Ridge dot com slash foul
- 24:47Speaker 1: to get up to forty seven percent off your order.
- 24:49Speaker 1: This is by far the biggest discount they've given all year.
- 24:52Speaker 1: That's Ridge dot com slash foul for up to forty
- 24:54Speaker 1: seven percent off your order during their biggest sale of
- 24:57Speaker 1: the year. After your purchase, I'll ask you where you
- 24:59Speaker 1: heard of it, out Ridge, tell them foul Territory sent you. Hey,
- 25:02Speaker 1: we've got odds for the World Series. This is the
- 25:05Speaker 1: World Series winner and the Yankees are clocking in at
- 25:08Speaker 1: second right now, according to bet MGM for twenty twenty
- 25:11Speaker 1: six plus seven fifty. Thoughts from KP.
- 25:18Speaker 2: I mean you got Aaron Judge to win bet against you?
- 25:23Speaker 3: Colet Garrett Cole, he's coming back to They're gonna add
- 25:26Speaker 3: at least two major free agents. They always do. They're
- 25:30Speaker 3: not gonna add at the trade deadline. They never, They
- 25:32Speaker 3: rarely do. Last year was rare. So this team plus
- 25:37Speaker 3: seven to fifty. I love that number. I really love
- 25:41Speaker 3: that number. I'm not convinced they're gonna win it yet,
- 25:43Speaker 3: but I do love that number.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Okay, anyone else that you think should be higher than them?
- 25:50Speaker 1: Not the Dodgers. I'm so you've got the Dodgers, the Yankees.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Anyone else that you think should be higher than the
- 25:56Speaker 1: Yanks as of right now?
- 26:00Speaker 4: Not yet?
- 26:01Speaker 2: I mean Phillies.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Phillies possibly, but I don't think they've done enough yet.
- 26:06Speaker 2: I can make the argument for the Blue Age or
- 26:08Speaker 2: the Mariners.
- 26:10Speaker 5: Yep, I just with the Mariners starting pitching, it's it's
- 26:15Speaker 5: I mean, they weren't even fully healthy last year and
- 26:18Speaker 5: we saw what they were able to do, so I
- 26:20Speaker 5: would never bet against the Mariners.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Okay, if we're missing anyone else in the live chat.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Live chat's been a little kooky today, So if you
- 26:30Speaker 1: want to get back on track and talk baseball, that'd
- 26:32Speaker 1: be great. This holiday season, BETEMGM is hooking you up
- 26:37Speaker 1: with something pretty cool for Thursday football games. So it's
- 26:42Speaker 1: actually another chance at a first touchdown scorer with bet
- 26:45Speaker 1: MGM's second Chance promotion. So if your pick scores second
- 26:48Speaker 1: instead of first, you still get your stake back in cash,
- 26:52Speaker 1: and with that token, you can bet without the sweat
- 26:56Speaker 1: because if you don't win, the steak is back in
- 26:59Speaker 1: bonus bets and you can sign up today with bonus
- 27:01Speaker 1: code foul Foul for up to a fifteen hundred dollars
- 27:04Speaker 1: new player offer on your first wager. We missed baseball too,
- 27:08Speaker 1: but football is there for you on Thursday. Gambling problem
- 27:12Speaker 1: or concern called one eight hundred gambler. We have one
- 27:17Speaker 1: minute and I will bring up a question that's loaded,
- 27:19Speaker 1: but I'm just going to get quick answers from everyone.
- 27:22Speaker 1: So John in the chat said, can you ask Evan
- 27:24Speaker 1: Grant if he thinks there's going to be a lockout
- 27:25Speaker 1: next year? And I was like, I feel like that's
- 27:27Speaker 1: more of an Evan relic or a Ken Rosenthal question.
- 27:31Speaker 1: My guest to him was, there's one thousand percent going
- 27:34Speaker 1: to be a lockout. But I think it's important for
- 27:35Speaker 1: people to understand that doesn't mean you'll miss games. It
- 27:37Speaker 1: just means that the sport will shut down for several
- 27:39Speaker 1: months in the offseason. For sure, that's a lock My
- 27:42Speaker 1: guess right now, gun to my head, KP, is that
- 27:45Speaker 1: we actually will miss games, but a very small amount
- 27:49Speaker 1: a week or two, to just make make the players
- 27:53Speaker 1: feel a little bit, make the owners field a little bit,
- 27:55Speaker 1: and then the two sides will say, Okay, enough of this,
- 27:57Speaker 1: We've got way too much momentum. What's your quick thought.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think they tipped their hand. And
- 28:03Speaker 2: during the last kind of mini lockout we had is
- 28:05Speaker 2: that they didn't make players, you know, sweat it out
- 28:08Speaker 2: long enough. So I wouldn't be surprised if if owners
- 28:11Speaker 2: did it. I think it's really sad that it's going
- 28:13Speaker 2: to come to that point because you look at the
- 28:16Speaker 2: ratings of the World Series, they were unbelievable. I think
- 28:19Speaker 2: the game's in a great place. We have a lot
- 28:21Speaker 2: of young stars, we have a lot of older stars.
- 28:24Speaker 2: You know, let's just continue to kind of ride this
- 28:26Speaker 2: momentum that baseball has right now. But I wouldn't be
- 28:29Speaker 2: surprised there's definitely gonna be a lockout because, as you
- 28:33Speaker 2: see everything in life, there has to be a deadline.
- 28:35Speaker 2: You know, we could come to terms right now on
- 28:37Speaker 2: a new CBA, but we're not going to, so there
- 28:39Speaker 2: has to be a deadline. We're going to cross that line.
- 28:42Speaker 2: There's gonna be a lockout, and no matter what the
- 28:45Speaker 2: players do in our union does try to get a
- 28:47Speaker 2: deal done. I think owners are going to send a
- 28:50Speaker 2: message this time that they want what they want and
- 28:53Speaker 2: they're willing to miss games to do it.
- 28:54Speaker 1: I'm trying to tiptoe the line Herecrafts because it is
- 28:56Speaker 1: still like kind of far away, but it's not. We're
- 28:59Speaker 1: approaching the year we actually will have a lockout. It'll
- 29:02Speaker 1: just be at the end of twenty twenty six. But
- 29:04Speaker 1: the questions do keep flooding in we're one of the
- 29:07Speaker 1: only spots that actually covers this. So what are your thoughts.
- 29:10Speaker 3: That's it right there, that's my answer. No, there will
- 29:13Speaker 3: not be a lockout. I mean there will not be
- 29:14Speaker 3: any games missed. There might be a little bit of
- 29:17Speaker 3: a lockout. Owners don't want to miss any games. Every
- 29:19Speaker 3: game they're like, oh, man, that's how much attendance all
- 29:22Speaker 3: this stuff. And I think our show has been around
- 29:25Speaker 3: for long enough that the narrative is changing. Is it
- 29:30Speaker 3: changed enough yet? I don't think so. But the narrative
- 29:33Speaker 3: is changing in the fans mindset that has always been
- 29:36Speaker 3: for years. Players greedy, millionaires, greedy, greedy, greedy, and people
- 29:42Speaker 3: are saying, oh, that's why ticket prices are going up. No,
- 29:45Speaker 3: that's not it at all. It's because the owners, the billionaires,
- 29:49Speaker 3: the people who are holding your game hostage, don't have
- 29:54Speaker 3: all the don't have all the leverage. Right now, you
- 29:57Speaker 3: know what, You fans are closer to the players than you.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Fans are close to the owners for the most part.
- 30:03Speaker 3: For the greedy owners, and to me, I don't think that.
- 30:07Speaker 3: I think the game is in a great place. Like
- 30:08Speaker 3: KP said, I don't think we miss any games. I
- 30:11Speaker 3: think there will be a lockout. But I think owners
- 30:13Speaker 3: are going to start to see the fans are on
- 30:16Speaker 3: the player's side more than they were in the past
- 30:18Speaker 3: twenty five thirty five years.
- 30:21Speaker 1: For me, I was good up until like forty eight
- 30:24Speaker 1: hours ago when hal stein Berner tried to tell everyone
- 30:26Speaker 1: that the Yankees aren't profitable, and then I had to
- 30:29Speaker 1: rethink life for a while. I was like, hold up,
- 30:33Speaker 1: so the Yankees don't make money. They get no checks
- 30:37Speaker 1: for owning that team, no checks, And I understand how
- 30:40Speaker 1: the business works, just.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Thinner, not as many. I'm not getting big checks. It's
- 30:46Speaker 3: just a bunch of little checks that are handed out,
- 30:49Speaker 3: which makes one big.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Do you think he's going to clarify and be liked?
- 30:53Speaker 1: Did I say profit? I meant I meant just a
- 30:55Speaker 1: little less profit because we split it with more people.
- 30:59Speaker 1: My bad clarification.
- 31:01Speaker 2: He will never because they'll never have to really show
- 31:04Speaker 2: it or approve it, so they're gonna cry wolf. And
- 31:08Speaker 2: I think the biggest problem is I think there's just
- 31:10Speaker 2: as much as there's a big disparity amongst players salaries,
- 31:14Speaker 2: I think there's a greater disparity when it comes to
- 31:17Speaker 2: owners and what they really truly want in terms of
- 31:21Speaker 2: revenue they make, you know, valuations of their franchise, and
- 31:24Speaker 2: how they believe that they can be competitive. So I
- 31:27Speaker 2: think to disagree with Krats, I do think there are
- 31:30Speaker 2: gonna be some owners that really hold the line this time.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Yeah. Also, the Braves are profitable. The Yankees are profitable.
- 31:38Speaker 1: We see the books for the Brave. All right, let's slap.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Kevin Polar sent out a tweet asking for an early
- 31:59Speaker 1: wish list for the Black Friday shoppers that love him
- 32:02Speaker 1: very much. What would you like from them?
- 32:05Speaker 2: Well, all of the above, to be honest with you,
- 32:08Speaker 2: you know, I was, you know, was just talking to
- 32:09Speaker 2: the kids about, you know, making sure they put their
- 32:12Speaker 2: list out there. So I wanted to prove to them
- 32:14Speaker 2: that even at the age of thirty six, I still
- 32:16Speaker 2: have a Christmas list, and I wanted to put it
- 32:18Speaker 2: out there. And you know, my wife does receive you know,
- 32:22Speaker 2: my notifications when I tweet as well too, So part
- 32:26Speaker 2: of it's for Santa, part of it's for my wife
- 32:27Speaker 2: as well too. So these are the things that I
- 32:30Speaker 2: would love to have. I will probably get none of them,
- 32:32Speaker 2: but you know, it's it's fun to dream.
- 32:35Speaker 4: No, no, no, you got one of them.
- 32:37Speaker 3: You said you wanted a goat, You got one goat
- 32:40Speaker 3: here the whole day you got to work with me.
- 32:42Speaker 2: That's true. Two goats. Actually, that's all I'm really looking
- 32:45Speaker 2: for is two goats, and I get to spend the
- 32:48Speaker 2: last two hours with two of them. So check.
- 32:51Speaker 1: I consider myself more of a barrel sauna, which was
- 32:54Speaker 1: on your.
- 32:54Speaker 3: List, barrelalation, Hepy Thanksgiving.
- 33:01Speaker 4: I'm thankful for all you guys. M.
