- 0:01What's up everyone? Welcome to this day and Philly
- 0:02Sports History 4 November 3rd, 2023.
- 0:06I'm your host, Jim Montgomery. We got a big show, especially
- 0:10for a Friday. It seems like that's been our
- 0:11theme recently. It's big shows on a Friday.
- 0:14It's Dallas week. I'm fresh off of the
- 0:18Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame ceremony.
- 0:21Not going to get into a ton of details because we're going to
- 0:22do a full recap next week on Back to the Future.
- 0:26But man, what a night. And I I I just want to say kudos
- 0:30to to Ken and Steve at the Hall of Fame.
- 0:32They did a phenomenal job. It was a great time.
- 0:35The way it was organized, just the the kind of casual
- 0:39atmosphere about it was really cool and I'll get more into
- 0:42that. But man it was great just
- 0:45meeting those guys and I I will say that and girls, but I will
- 0:50say this that it it was a weird intersection for me like I have
- 0:55the podcast so trying to grow and like having that hat on and
- 0:59looking for ways and and way to to grow that and where I can get
- 1:03in with that. I had just the the sports fan in
- 1:06me who's like, listen, this is I need to be a part of this and
- 1:09trying to to to start being more of a volunteer with the
- 1:13Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.
- 1:14And then there's just like the 12 year old me who like 12 year
- 1:17old me was been like, dude, that's so cool, blah, blah,
- 1:20blah, blah. So it was just a good time.
- 1:22I met a lot of great people. I have a lot of great stories.
- 1:26The speeches that the inductees gave were great.
- 1:29I do did take notes. So I'm still processing.
- 1:32There's certain things like even this morning talking to my wife,
- 1:34I'm like, oh, and then such and such, I talked to them and so it
- 1:38was really, really cool. It was a pleasure and a
- 1:41privilege to be there. So shout out to Ken and Steve.
- 1:44Like I said, that was a plus. I'm looking forward to next year
- 1:48and it's just I'm excited to be hopefully a part of the
- 1:52Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame organization.
- 1:54But more on that next week on Back to the Future.
- 1:58Speaking of Back to the Future there is a new episode out on
- 2:02the Philadelphia A's this week so be sure to check that out.
- 2:05Back to the future with APH and I mean I was with some of the
- 2:09greatest of all time in Philly sports When I go to Philly GOAT

- 2:22neighborhood things they have and they're always coming out
- 2:25with new shirts. I'm really pushing, I'm really
- 2:27pushing Ryan to come out with a Mega Jawn T-shirt and Kelly
- 2:30Green and so looking forward to that.

- 2:44We were just talking this morning about Christmas shopping
- 2:47and things like that go to Philly.
- 2:49GOAT makes a great Christmas present for whoever they have.

- 2:58Montgomery for 10% off of your order.
- 3:01All right, so question of the day recap and yesterday I had
- 3:07asked who was your all time favorite athlete?
- 3:10And as I expected I got people that it just ran the gamut of of
- 3:17people I I told you mine was Schmidty.
- 3:19But we got a lot of Brian Dawkins.
- 3:22I got a lot of a is I had a couple Jason Kelsey's.
- 3:26Obviously my kids were like Bryce Harper and Jalen Hurts.
- 3:29Which not wrong answers anyway. So thank you for everybody who
- 3:32participated. And like I said, as I expected
- 3:36almost everyone had a different answer.
- 3:38But like Dawkins had a couple AI had a couple.
- 3:42But great time. Be sure to check out our
- 3:46question of the Day later today for your chance to interact with
- 3:50the podcast. And I keep mentioning it and I'm
- 3:53very, very close. Now that the Philadelphia Sports
- 3:55Hall of Fame stuff, I can kind of decompress and process that.
- 3:59I do have some ways coming up very soon, hopefully this month
- 4:03of ways you can interact with the podcast rather than social
- 4:06media and everything. So stay tuned for that.
- 4:08But for now, be sure to get your answers to the question of the
- 4:11day through my social media, through the comments and
- 4:14wherever you're watching this text me again.
- 4:17I keep telling you smoke signals, it's cold out.
- 4:19You might have a fire going tonight.
- 4:21So keep them coming, All right, A couple updates from yesterday.
- 4:26We were talking about Jalen Hurts and the bone bruise.
- 4:29I did research it and I guess there are two types of bone
- 4:33bruises, Bone bruises that happen from.
- 4:37And again, I'm probably still getting this wrong.
- 4:38I'm not a doctor, so if you're a doctor or you're a medical
- 4:41professional, please feel free to correct me on this.
- 4:44But a bone bruise that is caused from like getting hit or trauma,
- 4:52you can't necessarily make them worse.
- 4:53It's more, as I thought, more of a pain tolerance thing.
- 4:56So it's probably why Jalen doesn't want to talk about it.
- 4:59He's probably in pain and wearing the brace kind of help
- 5:03stabilize it and and kind of, you know, when you're sore,
- 5:06sometimes putting like compression on it makes it feel
- 5:09better. There is the other kind of bone
- 5:12bruise that just kind of happens on its own.
- 5:14I believe Sam Bradford may have had one of them when he was in
- 5:17Minnesota. So that's a little bit different
- 5:21because that's a more of A cause for concern because it didn't
- 5:23happen because of an actual injury.
- 5:27I am assuming and again, because we're not really hearing much
- 5:29about it, I'm assuming that this is the kind that Jalen has that
- 5:34happened because of getting hit with a helmet or whatever it is.
- 5:37And I mean imagine getting hit with a helmet right on on your
- 5:41knee. It's going to hurt.
- 5:43So the fact that he's able to play through the pain by all
- 5:49intents and purposes, from what I was able to kind of gather,
- 5:54it's just more of a pain management thing for him.
- 5:57So hopefully that's what it is and it does take sometimes up to
- 6:00a month, six weeks to heal. So I think having the bye week
- 6:05coming up after this week's game, it will be huge.
- 6:08I don't necessarily again think it's a cause for concern.
- 6:12But again I'm not a doctor so if any medical professionals out
- 6:15there want to correct me on that, feel free.
- 6:18But that's sort of where I was able to find you guys know I
- 6:20always strive to to bring you accurate information and and
- 6:24whatnot. And Speaking of accurate
- 6:26information we talked about John Lucas yesterday with the Sixers
- 6:30calling Sharon Wrights Charmin. He there was one coach in
- 6:35between Popovich, Lucas and Popovich in San Antonio.
- 6:39Remember I said I think Popovich took over for Lucas, but Bob
- 6:43Hill was in there for a couple of seasons.
- 6:45He replaced Lucas when he was fired in the middle of the
- 6:48season. I think he coached another
- 6:50season and then they hired Greg Popovich.
- 6:53So I was close, but it's still pop.
- 6:56Popovich has been there for a long time.
- 6:58And finally, George Muersan, I did look them up and if you
- 7:02can't look them up, they were Snickers commercials.
- 7:05He had the Muersan Cologne and there was one where he was
- 7:08trying to make the the over the head shot with the kids
- 7:12hilarious. So be sure to check out the
- 7:15George Murasan Snickers commercials.
- 7:17I know that really doesn't have anything to do with Philly
- 7:19sports, but it came up and I wanted to point that out to you
- 7:22guys. All right, Sixers news, I guess
- 7:26let's start with the game itself.
- 7:28They beat Toronto for the second time and I believe it was three
- 7:31nights, 1/14/99 Joe, 28 points, 13 boards.
- 7:37Tobias and Kelly Uber both had 23 and I really like that.
- 7:42This offense so far with Nick Nurse and again, I know it's a
- 7:44small sample size, but they're really moving the ball around.
- 7:47And as much as we, we kind of laughed when Tobias's dad came
- 7:52out and was like, hey, he could be one of the best, he's really
- 7:55excelling in Nick Nurse's system because he has more space.
- 7:59And I really, like I said, I think I like the direction that
- 8:04they're heading with him now. They have some movable assets
- 8:07now at the trade deadline and all of a sudden they went from
- 8:11not being a championship contender to creeping their way
- 8:14now into that conversation if things kind of go and play out
- 8:18the way they should. Now Speaking of Nick Nurse's
- 8:21system, James Harden did it, was interviewed and basically said
- 8:26that while he was with the Sixers, he was on a leash and
- 8:29wasn't allowed to be him. And I guess that was either a
- 8:33shot at Joe or Doc or both. And he's like not necessarily
- 8:39being able to score 30 some points a game or something.
- 8:42Like he's like I've done that. He's like just being able to
- 8:44create and and make plays and it just kind of seems like a
- 8:48strange thing. And it almost is.
- 8:51I'm taking it as sort of a way to kind of make himself look
- 8:59better now that the trade and and say, well, the reason I was
- 9:02unhappy is because they didn't let me be me or or something
- 9:04along those lines. I I don't buy it and Joe was
- 9:08asked about it and he was like look I wish him the best but I
- 9:10mean he had the ball in his hands every single play.
- 9:13So how much of A leash was he on?
- 9:16And again I think it's kind of like that last little jolted
- 9:19lover shot at the Sixers. Hopefully now we can turn the
- 9:23page. I I don't.
- 9:25I think the next time I guess they play before them, but the
- 9:29the the Clippers come to Philly in March.
- 9:33But I mean I don't know it just I'm over it.
- 9:37But I I do think it was kind of like his last little parting
- 9:40shot at the Sixers. But there are a lot of rumors
- 9:44floating around getting back to the comment I made about the
- 9:47trade deadline, that the Sixers are intending to be aggressive
- 9:50at the trade deadline. And I really feel they should.
- 9:53I mean they're in a great position with the expiring
- 9:56contracts and having those assets where they could trade
- 10:02them to bring somebody in who's going to be here maybe a little
- 10:05bit longer for an extension or whatever.
- 10:07So I think finally and and having a day or two now to to
- 10:12recap and really process, no pun intended, this trade.
- 10:17I think they've set themselves up now where again they're I
- 10:21don't think they're quite on the level of Milwaukee though I
- 10:26don't know if Milwaukee's as good as they were last year and
- 10:28Boston. But I I mean I kind of the
- 10:31especially the way they've been playing and having those assets
- 10:34now all of a sudden they've played their way into maybe
- 10:37they're the third best team in the East again and once you get
- 10:40into the play offs you never know.
- 10:42But again good win for them hard and still doing hard and things.
- 10:47Flyers are in Buffalo tonight. Carter Hart was injured the
- 10:51other night and is expected to miss some time and was not able
- 10:54to get because hockey. They don't give specifics on
- 10:57injury. It's just an upper body mid body
- 10:59or lower body injury. But it sounds like he might have
- 11:02something wrong, either a muscle strain or even worse, like maybe
- 11:07broken ribs or something. But it seemed like he could miss
- 11:10anywhere from two to six weeks, which is a blow because they've
- 11:13been playing well as a young team.
- 11:16But it also gives the the backup goalies and the younger Got
- 11:20goalies a chance to kind of shine and show what they have.
- 11:23It gives Danny Barrera to see what he has, like now this
- 11:26Carter heart become expendable. Do you have pieces now to move
- 11:30so you don't wish an injury on anyone?
- 11:32But it's a good opportunity for the backup goalies to kind of
- 11:36come out and and show what they have.
- 11:38And again, not good for the Flyers on the ice, but long
- 11:43looking long term as this is a rebuilding year, something that
- 11:46they'll be able to see what they have.
- 11:49All right, Eagles news, Jalen Hurts.
- 11:52We talked about his injury. The big story yesterday was the
- 11:57the kind of the ending of his press conference the other day
- 12:00where he was kind of getting up and the last question was thrown
- 12:04out there. And he's like, I'm not talking
- 12:05about it and got up and walked away and I don't know which
- 12:09reporter it was. And he, I mean, he joked about
- 12:11it. He was like, that's what I
- 12:12figured, right? It was worth a shot or something
- 12:14like that. But I did notice there's a lot
- 12:17of people up in arms about him not addressing the injury and
- 12:19wanting to talk about it. And again, like, I think knowing
- 12:23that it's a bone bruise and knowing it's more of a pain
- 12:25management thing, maybe he's just trying to move past it,
- 12:28fight through it and and be good.
- 12:30But that leads me to this year or this year, today's question
- 12:34of the day. And when it comes to athletes,
- 12:37and obviously a reporter has a job, the athlete has a job and
- 12:42the teams have a job to kind of make sure they're winning and
- 12:45put themselves in the best position for that.
- 12:47But are they obligated to give us the information?
- 12:53Are they obligated to elaborate? Like, what is the sort of
- 12:56balance? Let me know what you think.
- 12:58I'm going to put that on the social media.
- 13:00But again, is there an obligation for Jalen Hurts to
- 13:03talk about his injury if he doesn't want to?
- 13:07And I mean, there's very, like, you start peeling back layers of
- 13:10the onion on this one. I mean, you have the gambling
- 13:12implications, the fantasy football implications and
- 13:14everything like that. So I I feel like it all needs to
- 13:18play into it. But what obligation do players
- 13:20have? And coaches have to be truthful,
- 13:23Like Bill Belichick throws everybody on the injury report a
- 13:27lot of times and whatnot. So let me know what you think
- 13:31about that. It's an interesting kind of
- 13:33situation because in one respect it's like, yeah, we want to know
- 13:37especially if there's money involved and it's just rooting
- 13:41interest. And I mean you think about the
- 13:42NBA with the whole load management thing where they
- 13:45actually enacted the rule where you need to to play people.
- 13:49Certain times I told you the story where we found out on or
- 13:52as we were pulling into like we were all 95 pulling off the exit
- 13:56that or 76. I guess it was that Joe wasn't
- 14:00playing and I mean obviously we were going to go down, but it
- 14:03kind of we're paying full price now.
- 14:05We're not seeing Joe. So let me know what you think
- 14:08about the obligations of players to to speak to the media and
- 14:13what they need to or what they should be telling everyone.
- 14:17Couple injuries up, the injury updates.
- 14:19It doesn't look like Cam Jorgens is going to play.
- 14:22He is starting to participate in practice.
- 14:25Tyler Steen looks like he's going to get the start, which I
- 14:28like. It's a small sample size, but he
- 14:31looked what good last week. He also looked good in the pre
- 14:34season. So I'm excited to see what he
- 14:36has to or what he's able to bring.
- 14:39Jalen Carter was in full participant again.
- 14:42I keep saying and I'm kind of tipping my hand a little bit for
- 14:45for the preview of the game on Sunday, but I I think he's going
- 14:48to play a big role in this game on Sunday, so they need him
- 14:52healthy. Jordan Davis is limited with
- 14:55that hamstring. Love to see him be able to play,
- 14:58but the fact that he's still practicing leads me to believe
- 15:01he might be able to to play some snaps again, which is going to
- 15:05be huge going into this game. But that's really all the Eagles
- 15:09news we have for today, right now.
- 15:11A lot. We'll we'll know a lot more at
- 15:13the end of the day today when those final injury reports come
- 15:16out. But for the question of the day,
- 15:18please let me know what you think about what players need to
- 15:23tell the immediate, the media, and what obligation they have to
- 15:26tell us anything for that matter.
- 15:30New Clashing Conferences podcast dropped last night.
- 15:32It was definitely an interesting one.
- 15:35Randy was his normal self, as you would expect.
- 15:38So go check out my boys over there, the Clashing Conferences
- 15:40podcast, anywhere you get your podcast as well as on YouTube.
- 15:45All right it is Eagles Dallas week as I said and today we're
- 15:50we're going to do a little Eagles Dallas.
- 15:51One of my all time favorite memories of the Eagles Cowboys
- 15:56rivalry And on this day back in 1996 the six and two Eagles took
- 16:00on the five and three Cowboys in Dallas.
- 16:03First place was on the line. The Eagles won this 131 to 21.
- 16:08Ty Detmer went 19 for 33 for 217 yards, threw a touchdown, also
- 16:13ran in a touchdown. Ricky Waters had 116 yards and a
- 16:17touchdown. But the story was the Eagles
- 16:20defense. They interceted.
- 16:22Troy Aikman twice gave him fits all game, including one within
- 16:28the final minutes when the Eagles or the Cowboys were
- 16:30driving down inside the tent. They had the game tying field
- 16:34goal lined up, but they got greedy.
- 16:37Aikman through it. James Willis intercepted it,
- 16:39took it out to the tent, lateraled to Troy Vincent who
- 16:44weaved his way down to the opposite sideline.
- 16:46And one of my all time. I'm getting chills just thinking
- 16:49about it. My all time favorite mural Reese
- 16:51calls. He's.
- 16:52Running down the sideline. He's at the 15 to 4:50
- 16:55touchdown. The Eagles win.
- 16:56The Eagles win. The Eagles win.
- 16:58And yes, that was a horrible moral Reese impersonation, but
- 17:01look it up on YouTube. One of my all time favorite
- 17:04calls and it was Troy Vincent taking the lateral 90 yards to
- 17:08seal the wind, putting the Eagles into first place At that
- 17:12moment. That season it was Ray Rhodes's
- 17:15second year. I finished the season 10 and
- 17:18six. Unfortunately for the Eagles
- 17:20after this game they would lose four of their next 5 and they
- 17:25ended up tied with the Cowboys at 10:00 and 6:00 but would lose
- 17:28the tiebreaker. I guess it would have been
- 17:30division record. So that meant they went out to
- 17:33San Francisco, lost to the 49ers 14.
- 17:35Nothing in like a rainy, muddy, sloppy game in the wild card
- 17:39round. Detmer and Waters just couldn't
- 17:41get much going that day. This was also the last season
- 17:45they would make the playoffs until Andy and Donovan came back
- 17:47in 2000. But on this day we were all
- 17:51flying high as the Eagles beat the Cowboys 31 to 22 after James
- 17:56Willis intercepted Troy Aikman in the end zone, took it out to
- 17:59the 10 lateral to Troy Vincent who went cut across the field
- 18:04down the other sideline and Merle Reese gave us one of the
- 18:07most memorable calls ever. The Eagles win the.
- 18:09Eagles win, the Eagles win. And yes, I fully understand and
- 18:14realize that my Myrtle Reese is not good.
- 18:18All right, You know what is good though?
- 18:19carcant.com. I keep saying if your kids are
- 18:23messy like mine, you need this. You might, might even need two.
- 18:26If you have two kids, do you have a minivan or a bigger car
- 18:29and you have three or four kids? Get three or four because these
- 18:33things are great. They fit right on the back of
- 18:34your seat. Throw the trash right in there.
- 18:36No more lollipop sticks and granola bar and fruit snack
- 18:39wrappers. Gatorade bottles.
- 18:42They told you I found Pop Tarts and my kids only I couldn't even
- 18:44tell you where they got Pop Tarts from.
- 18:46Go to carcan.com. This thing is great.
- 18:49Use it as a trash can storage. If going on a long trip, use it
- 18:53as a cooler. They don't have kids, don't need
- 18:56a car, Can't they have a wide selection of vehicle
- 19:00organizational things I told you about things for the trunk, help
- 19:03get your cup holders in order. Just a great overall product.
- 19:07And again, this also makes an excellent holiday gift,
- 19:11especially for the people at work.
- 19:12You know how you have the Pollyannas where you have like a
- 19:15a budget. You can go in there with a whole
- 19:17car can packet and I just a basket almost and and be the
- 19:22star of the office party. Go to carcan.com, use the promo
- 19:26code Jim Montgomery 20 off all one word.
- 19:28Jim Montgomery 20 off for 20% off of your order.
- 19:32And again the more car cans you buy they also have deals and
- 19:35discounts set up for that great company.
- 19:37Go to carcan.com. Use the promo code Jim
- 19:40Montgomery 20 off for 20% off of your order.
- 19:45All right, it's a shame that we're we're coming down on
- 19:48coming down from such a high on a Friday to to focus on our
- 19:52disappointing Philly athletes for the month of November.
- 19:56But this one is one of the more interesting and frustrating ones
- 20:00out there, and that is Danny Tartable.
- 20:03And in 1997 the Phillies signed tartable to A1 year $2 million
- 20:08contract and which is what they offered him at first, but when
- 20:13he first offered it. He said F you I'm worth more
- 20:17money than that. But wait, there's more.
- 20:20Turns out the only and no, I don't know if anybody knew this
- 20:24but tartable, but the only other team that offered him a contract
- 20:28at the time was the Cincinnati Reds who only were willing to
- 20:31offer him 500,000 and he was getting older than I think he
- 20:35was in his mid 30s. He was a 13 year vet and he was
- 20:41coming off injuries in the 9495 season, bounced back in 1996.
- 20:46He had 27 homers and 100 RBI, 101 RBI.
- 20:50Mostly I think as a a designated hitter though with the White
- 20:53Sox, solid career and all of a sudden once he realized he
- 20:59wasn't getting any money, he said.
- 21:00How Phillies, I was just bullshitting here.
- 21:03I'll sign that contract. So they signed him to the one
- 21:05year $2 million contract. Again, I said he was a very
- 21:08solid player. I think he had one or two All
- 21:10Star appearances and just was a good hitter.
- 21:15That is of course, until he came to Philadelphia.
- 21:18His final stats in Philadelphia were three games, seven at bats,
- 21:24zero hits, $2,000,000 and then he retired.
- 21:30That typically typified the Phillies of that era.
- 21:35This was when Terry Francona, who just, I mean, I've been
- 21:39you've you've heard me say it. I I think he was a terrible
- 21:42manager. I think he got lucky that he
- 21:45came into a ready made situation in Boston.
- 21:48I feel like if they kept Grady little they would have won that
- 21:50next year anyway. But now Tito gets all the credit
- 21:53for it. Not a fan, but that 97 Phillies
- 21:56team went 68 and 94. So I I think even a solid or
- 22:01decent or even an All Star level Danny Tartable wasn't going to
- 22:05make much of a difference. But today's most disappointed
- 22:08Philadelphia sports athlete is Danny Tartable, who made
- 22:12$2,000,000 for playing three games, seven at bats and zero
- 22:16hits. Speaking of trash, anyway, on
- 22:21this day back in 1996 the Eagles beat the Cowboys 3121 when James
- 22:25Willis intercepted Troy Aikman in the end zone and Troy Vincent
- 22:29took it to the house. Meryl Reese gave us one of the
- 22:32best calls ever and we were flying high for a short amount
- 22:35of time, but then we lost four of our next five games.
- 22:39Sixers with a good win. Anxious to see what Daryl Morey
- 22:43has up his sleeve. I want to continue to see them
- 22:45grow within this system. It is Eagles Dallas week.
- 22:48We're going to have way more on that game tomorrow and Sunday.
- 22:51Obviously. Let me know for the question of
- 22:54the day. What obligation do athletes have
- 22:56to be give, provide information to the media.
- 23:00Like does Jalen need to go in to describe how his knee feels?
- 23:04And we all know it's her. So what obligation does he have?
- 23:07Let me know. I can't wait to recap this
- 23:12Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame and it was a blast.
- 23:14Looking forward to it. Again, thank you, Ken and Steve
- 23:17for the opportunity and for putting on a great show.
- 23:19It's going to be slightly warmer today, but it is Friday.
- 23:25This has been this day in Philly sports history.
- 23:27I'm Jim Montgomery. Go have yourselves a Friday and
- 23:29until next time I'll see you when I see it.
