- 0:04Speaker 1: Hey, it's Bob Left Sets. I have a new podcast
- 0:06Speaker 1: on tune in. The goal is to titilate and inform
- 0:10Speaker 1: you simultaneously with topics about the music business, the Internet,
- 0:15Speaker 1: in the world at large. I guarantee you it will
- 0:18Speaker 1: be intriguing, whether you agree with me or not. Tune
- 0:21Speaker 1: in and find out. The first episode involves a conversation
- 0:24Speaker 1: with John Boyle, a kingpin and insomniac, the great electronic
- 0:28Speaker 1: music promoter. We get into his background and first and
- 0:32Speaker 1: for most my background, so you can learn a little
- 0:34Speaker 1: bit about me. John. Hi, Bob, thank you so much
- 0:38Speaker 1: for having me. This is the beginning of the of
- 0:41Speaker 1: the Left Sets letter. Yes, so I went to see
- 0:43Speaker 1: a job counselor. My shrink said to do it. I
- 0:47Speaker 1: wrote essays and I got back in touch with the
- 0:49Speaker 1: fact I love to write, and I wrote. I said
- 0:52Speaker 1: something to magazines. When the rejections came back, said wait
- 0:54Speaker 1: a second, Wait a second, this is just like the
- 0:56Speaker 1: music business. You have to know these people. And I'm
- 0:59Speaker 1: reading all board and I'm ready to go. This is terrible.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I could do a better job than this. I didn't
- 1:06Speaker 1: have a computer at the time, and then I went
- 1:08Speaker 1: out and charged up five grand worth of computer equipment,
- 1:10Speaker 1: and I started this newsletter in the fall of eighty six.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I said, three thousand copies three times from a directory.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I got the addresses from the Yellow Pages of Rock
- 1:19Speaker 1: And I was really doing it just to get into
- 1:21Speaker 1: the job in the music business. I didn't think it
- 1:23Speaker 1: would be successful. All right, Bob, So why the funk
- 1:27Speaker 1: are you doing this? Lot's an interesting question. Now, this
- 1:29Speaker 1: is guy David Dorn, who's a big wig at Apple Music. Now,
- 1:32Speaker 1: he tracked me down about doing this podcast for Rhino
- 1:36Speaker 1: was two thousand five, and I did it all the
- 1:40Speaker 1: way to remember this, all the way to the end
- 1:42Speaker 1: of two thousand nine. That podcast was about talking about records.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I got emailed for years after it stopped. People would
- 1:50Speaker 1: want to hear that again. So I'm gonna give you
- 1:54Speaker 1: the real, real story. Yeah yeah, So in any event,
- 1:58Speaker 1: that ended, podcast went and then then what came back up?
- 2:01Speaker 1: And everybody has a podcast and Howard Stern is giving
- 2:05Speaker 1: them ship, everybody can broadcast, etcetera. And it's like, I
- 2:08Speaker 1: don't want to write a novel. That's not what I do.
- 2:11Speaker 1: My thing is immediate. People say write a book, say
- 2:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a year or two to write a
- 2:14Speaker 1: book that's gonna reach a tenth of the people that
- 2:16Speaker 1: I normally reach. That's not what I'm gonna do in
- 2:19Speaker 1: the full. Two years ago, I lost my two big
- 2:23Speaker 1: paying gigs. I had a column and Variety, and I
- 2:26Speaker 1: had these Spotify playlists I was doing for Rhino. Rhino
- 2:30Speaker 1: totally redid their thing. Variety is a much deeper story.
- 2:33Speaker 1: But I lost them both in a week and I'd
- 2:36Speaker 1: saved a lot of money. But it's through me. I
- 2:39Speaker 1: hate to admit it. It's like a breakup for me.
- 2:42Speaker 1: It takes a long time for me to recover from these.
- 2:45Speaker 1: It's hard to get over. And I'll also admit since
- 2:48Speaker 1: I turned sixty really fucked me up. You know everybody's
- 2:53Speaker 1: saying sixties to do fifty new for you, that's horseship.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Sixty is sixty because the first you want to be remembered.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Then you realize nobody's gonna be remembered, so it frees
- 3:01Speaker 1: you up to do different things. I was on the
- 3:04Speaker 1: Recode podcast and I knew I killed some guy tracked
- 3:08Speaker 1: me down this craziest really guy had the third biggest
- 3:11Speaker 1: YouTube channel if you discount Vivo, and he wanted to
- 3:14Speaker 1: do a podcast, and I liked that he was young,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and I said, well, maybe I'll take a flyer. Then
- 3:20Speaker 1: Irving as Off said a big radio chain was interested.
- 3:24Speaker 1: We were at paper. I was gonna do with the
- 3:26Speaker 1: big radio chain, and then the guy who is head
- 3:29Speaker 1: of tune in track me down and he said, well,
- 3:32Speaker 1: and I said, you literally have to get on it
- 3:34Speaker 1: right away. I mean, I'm literally the contracts are going
- 3:37Speaker 1: back and forth. I liked once again that he was
- 3:40Speaker 1: from the New world. I was brought up in a
- 3:42Speaker 1: family where they told me I was a ship head.
- 3:44Speaker 1: My mother would literally say, well, who are you? Why
- 3:46Speaker 1: would they listen to you? So I realized, well, if
- 3:49Speaker 1: I'm good on these other things, I need to give
- 3:51Speaker 1: it a shot. And also I realized there are a
- 3:53Speaker 1: lot of people I do want to talk to which
- 3:55Speaker 1: has a different flavor from writing right, and you have
- 4:00Speaker 1: exactly like I'm going to talk to Nathan Hubbard who
- 4:03Speaker 1: ran Ticketmaster and is in the ticketing sphere, and there
- 4:07Speaker 1: are a lot of creative people. You're gonna get them all, dude.
- 4:10Speaker 1: But as I say, I like to get someone's story.
- 4:14Speaker 1: I don't want to just hear the hype. So I
- 4:16Speaker 1: look forward to that the podcast. My goal is to
- 4:21Speaker 1: make your life more interesting. That's what I'm trying to
- 4:24Speaker 1: do here on my new podcast on tune in. So
- 4:27Speaker 1: search left sets on your tune in app and go
- 4:29Speaker 1: down the rabbit hole with me. As my father would say,
- 4:32Speaker 1: that's l E like Edward F. Like Franks, like Sam E,
- 4:36Speaker 1: like Edward T, like tom Z, like Zebra. You can
- 4:39Speaker 1: imagine what it's like going through life with a name
- 4:41Speaker 1: like that. I want to give you information and entertain
- 4:44Speaker 1: you simultaneously. In a world full of clutter. I hope
- 4:47Speaker 1: to rise above h
