Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:38Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:41Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are talking
- 0:45Speaker 1: about this week's full episode on Donnie Hathaway, Amy Weinhaus
- 0:50Speaker 1: and the greatest female Singers of the twentieth century, and
- 0:53Speaker 1: how we're thinking about choosing episode subjects with you guys
- 0:56Speaker 1: going forward. Of course, we've got your voicemails, text and more,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and as always, a whole lot of rosie. All right,
- 1:03Speaker 1: this goes, let's get into it. So many of our subjects,
- 1:17Speaker 1: the artists, the musicians, the accuracy athletes, they're dismissed as
- 1:21Speaker 1: crazy and it's totally understandable the behavior the actions of
- 1:26Speaker 1: these people. In a lot of cases it is straight
- 1:28Speaker 1: up batshit crazy lunacy, whether it's Big Lurch, the hip
- 1:32Speaker 1: hop artist cannibalizing his roommate, which you heard about way
- 1:36Speaker 1: back in season one of Disgrace, and or the abuse
- 1:38Speaker 1: Alfred Hitchcock inflicted upon his starlet top headin a story
- 1:42Speaker 1: you're going to hear about a couple of weeks. These
- 1:44Speaker 1: examples only scratch the surface of crazy. These stories are
- 1:50Speaker 1: a certain type, the type where the subject we cover
- 1:53Speaker 1: acts in insane ways. Then there is this other type
- 1:58Speaker 1: of episode where the subject that we cover over the
- 2:00Speaker 1: artists is the victim of craziness. John Lennon's assassination at
- 2:05Speaker 1: the hands of Mark David Chapman, the endless parade of
- 2:08Speaker 1: stalkers who harassed Taylor Swift. However you look at it,
- 2:11Speaker 1: crazy is part of the DNA here in Disgraceland. Going
- 2:15Speaker 1: back to the first promos of the show, where I
- 2:17Speaker 1: wrote and said the following when describing the podcast is
- 2:20Speaker 1: I said, Disgraceland is a new podcast about musicians getting
- 2:24Speaker 1: away with murder and behaving very badly. Jerry Lee Lewis's
- 2:27Speaker 1: fifth Wife Dead, Sam Cook, three AM, and a CD
- 2:30Speaker 1: Motel Dead sit in Nancy Dead. Why because musicians are crazy,
- 2:37Speaker 1: because insane things happen to them, Because we love them
- 2:40Speaker 1: and because we let them get away with it. That's
- 2:42Speaker 1: the first Disgraceland promo ever written, ever recorded. I still
- 2:46Speaker 1: have fond memories of hearing it for the very first time,
- 2:48Speaker 1: and you know, again, I read it because crazy is
- 2:52Speaker 1: the central part. It's a central theme. It's been a
- 2:54Speaker 1: central theme of our storytelling from the beginning, and we
- 2:57Speaker 1: talk about it still to this day every single week
- 2:59Speaker 1: and one form or another. So so much so that
- 3:02Speaker 1: I've become a bit desensitized by it as a concept
- 3:05Speaker 1: and now grappling with what I'm sure many of you
- 3:08Speaker 1: have grappled with in the past, and it's the fact that,
- 3:11Speaker 1: of course crazy is relative. Jerry y lewis the killer
- 3:17Speaker 1: in his actions. You know, he may obviously seem crazy
- 3:21Speaker 1: to us, but you know, to uh, some of those
- 3:24Speaker 1: dudes who are hanging out with him, and part of
- 3:25Speaker 1: that whole first rock and roll pioneer era from down
- 3:28Speaker 1: in the South and and and on that circuit that
- 3:31Speaker 1: they all came up on, you know, I mean, Jerry
- 3:34Speaker 1: le Lewis was crazy, but he wasn't that crazy, I'm
- 3:36Speaker 1: sure to some of these guys. You know, I've even
- 3:38Speaker 1: talked to some people, of course, who have known some
- 3:41Speaker 1: of the people that we've covered known them, well, known
- 3:43Speaker 1: them intimately. I'm talking about talking to Hell's Angels. I'm
- 3:47Speaker 1: talking about talking to to Road. He's talking to Graham
- 3:50Speaker 1: parsons famous sidekick, Phil Kaufman. And you know, again, to
- 3:56Speaker 1: Phil Kaufman, Uh, Graham Parsons did not seem crazy. You know,
- 4:00Speaker 1: he seemed a little unhinged, I'm sure, a little hard
- 4:03Speaker 1: to handle, but I don't think he would use the
- 4:08Speaker 1: term crazy. I talked to a Hell's Angel, George Christy,
- 4:11Speaker 1: who had a lot of experience with Jerry Garcia and
- 4:16Speaker 1: a whole bunch of other artists, and I'm sure their
- 4:18Speaker 1: actions did not seem crazy to George. Okay, who is
- 4:21Speaker 1: a Hell's Angel. So what I'm saying is Jerry Lelewis,
- 4:24Speaker 1: it's a different type of crazy than someone who stocks
- 4:26Speaker 1: Taylor Swift. All right, I'm not trying to compare the craziness,
- 4:29Speaker 1: but there is a different type of craziness. Goes without
- 4:32Speaker 1: saying almost. They're both batshit nuts, of course, but they're
- 4:35Speaker 1: different and they give us different lanes of perspective to
- 4:39Speaker 1: tell their stories. Okay, that's the stuff that we've been
- 4:42Speaker 1: dealing with. But then there's the whole mentally ill angle. Okay,
- 4:47Speaker 1: those artists that we've covered who have deep seated issues,
- 4:52Speaker 1: to whom being described as crazy is well offensive. Frankly,
- 4:56Speaker 1: we wouldn't call Carrie Fisher crazy, we wouldn't call Sid
- 5:00Speaker 1: Barrett from Pink Fully crazy. We wouldn't call Amy Winehouse
- 5:03Speaker 1: crazy for the reasons that I mentioned. And those artists
- 5:06Speaker 1: struggled with demons, they self medicated, and they all experienced
- 5:12Speaker 1: wild rides through fame and celebrity and left us with
- 5:16Speaker 1: some pretty incredible art in the process. Now, for these
- 5:20Speaker 1: types of artists, it's harder to talk about them. In
- 5:22Speaker 1: this past week's episode, subject Donnie Hathaway was for me
- 5:26Speaker 1: very hard to talk about. Donnie's issues are well documented,
- 5:30Speaker 1: but still to this day they're hard to define and
- 5:33Speaker 1: even harder to grapple with as a storyteller, especially considering
- 5:37Speaker 1: the chilling way in which he died. In the case
- 5:40Speaker 1: of Donnie Hathaway, an incredibly talented musician, his quote unquote
- 5:45Speaker 1: craziness was closer to madness, and of course driven by illness,
- 5:50Speaker 1: not by narcissism or sociopathy or drug abuse. So it's
- 5:54Speaker 1: not an easy subject to cover at least, it wasn't
- 5:56Speaker 1: an easy subject to cover in a unique way. But
- 5:59Speaker 1: I think that we found an interesting perspective and it's
- 6:01Speaker 1: one that carries over from this Donnie Hathaway episode all
- 6:05Speaker 1: the way to the Blink one eighty two episode that
- 6:07Speaker 1: we've written and recorded but haven't yet released. And it's
- 6:10Speaker 1: this idea that mentally ill people, specifically those with multiple
- 6:15Speaker 1: personality disorders, or those who specifically suffer from hallucinations, as
- 6:21Speaker 1: the Great Donnie Hathaway did, there's this idea that what
- 6:25Speaker 1: if they actually aren't hallucinating? What if we just can't
- 6:29Speaker 1: see what they see? I know this sounds crazy, but
- 6:34Speaker 1: divorce yourself from conventional thinking for the sake of this
- 6:37Speaker 1: argument for a minute. What if the mentally ill who
- 6:41Speaker 1: hallucinate are seeing into different dimensions that our brains are
- 6:46Speaker 1: not evolved enough to unlock to access. Okay, you have
- 6:51Speaker 1: to first believe that there are perhaps multiple dimensions realms
- 6:55Speaker 1: here on Earth and elsewhere throughout the universe. Where where
- 6:58Speaker 1: life where, where it exists beyond this third dimension that
- 7:03Speaker 1: we inhabit, where perhaps angels in demons rome where And
- 7:07Speaker 1: this is where it gets very interesting for me, Where
- 7:10Speaker 1: ultra terrestrials.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Rome.
- 7:12Speaker 1: We hit upon this briefly in the Donnie Hathaway story,
- 7:14Speaker 1: but uphologists, or the folks who study UFOs, many believe
- 7:19Speaker 1: that the UFO sightings and encounters that humans have experienced
- 7:23Speaker 1: from the beginning of recorded history aren't encounters with beings
- 7:26Speaker 1: from elsewhere in the universe. That they're not aliens, that
- 7:30Speaker 1: they're not extraterrestrials, but they are instead beings from right
- 7:34Speaker 1: here on Earth, from this earthly realm, i should say,
- 7:37Speaker 1: beings that exist in another dimension, and that they're ultra terrestrials,
- 7:43Speaker 1: not extraterrestrials. Ultra terrestrials. And I'm going to get into
- 7:46Speaker 1: this again like I said in the Blink one eighty
- 7:48Speaker 1: two episode, and I'm very tempted to get into it here.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I'm not going to dive any deeper. But ultimately, what
- 7:54Speaker 1: they're talking about are angels and demons, both good and bad,
- 7:58Speaker 1: both doing their bids for good and evil here on
- 8:02Speaker 1: Earth and influencing us mortals at all times, ultra terrestrials
- 8:06Speaker 1: that occasionally, perhaps by necessity, perhaps by accident, enter into
- 8:11Speaker 1: this third dimension, thus explaining the many sightings and encounters
- 8:16Speaker 1: that we've had but for the most part exist in
- 8:19Speaker 1: an extra dimension unseen by us most of the time. Okay,
- 8:23Speaker 1: or at least unseen by most of us, but not
- 8:27Speaker 1: unseen by those who can access parts of their minds
- 8:31Speaker 1: that we can't. Crazy people so called crazy people or
- 8:36Speaker 1: are they just excessively open minded people, people whose creativity
- 8:41Speaker 1: knows no bounds, People like Donnie Hathaway. Okay, I know,
- 8:47Speaker 1: I know this sounds crazy, but it's fun to think about,
- 8:51Speaker 1: and ultimately none of us really know, because, like I
- 8:54Speaker 1: said earlier, crazy is relative. So this is what I
- 9:00Speaker 1: I took anyways, from the Donnie Hathaway episode. I hope
- 9:03Speaker 1: you guys dug the episode. One of the reasons I
- 9:05Speaker 1: wanted to cover Donnie Hathaway in the first place was
- 9:07Speaker 1: because he was a huge influence on Amy Winehouse, an
- 9:10Speaker 1: artist that we covered all the way back in twenty
- 9:12Speaker 1: nineteen in episode number thirty one. If you can believe that,
- 9:16Speaker 1: Amy Winehouse, of course, name check Donnie Hathaway in her
- 9:19Speaker 1: song her Great song Rehab, singing There's nothing you can
- 9:23Speaker 1: teach me that I can't learn from mister Hathaway, Which
- 9:27Speaker 1: brings me to my question of the week, Who is
- 9:30Speaker 1: your favorite female singer from this century, from the two thousands,
- 9:34Speaker 1: the odds, they tens, the twenty twenties, It's hard for
- 9:37Speaker 1: me to find one that I like more or listen
- 9:40Speaker 1: to you more than Amy Winehouse. But just like crazy,
- 9:43Speaker 1: musical opinions are also subjective. Okay, So who is it?
- 9:47Speaker 1: Who's your favorite female singer from this century? And why?
- 9:51Speaker 1: I want to know why? Why is my answer Amy Whinhouse?
- 9:54Speaker 1: Why w might your answer be Amy Winehouse? Why is
- 9:56Speaker 1: it Taylor Swift? Why why is it Lady Gaga or
- 9:59Speaker 1: Casey Muskra or Courtney Barnett or Adele or Billie Eilish
- 10:02Speaker 1: or Brandy Carlisle. Why do you love this female singer
- 10:06Speaker 1: more than others? And if you are going to bat
- 10:09Speaker 1: for one of these artists, one of these singers, excuse me.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I want to know what should I be listening to?
- 10:15Speaker 1: What haven't I heard to convince me that I really
- 10:19Speaker 1: need to consider Adele to be a better singer than
- 10:22Speaker 1: Amy Winehouse, or I really need to be considering I
- 10:25Speaker 1: don't know, Billie Eilish. I don't think you can make
- 10:26Speaker 1: that case, but go for it. Tell me what songs
- 10:29Speaker 1: I need to be listening to? Who is it okay?
- 10:31Speaker 1: In honor of Amy Winehouse Visa VI Donnie Hathaway, who
- 10:34Speaker 1: is your favorite female artist of the century? Hit me
- 10:36Speaker 1: up at disgrace slampod on Instagram, x Facebook, TikTok or
- 10:41Speaker 1: you can call me and leave me a voicemail at
- 10:43Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight
- 10:45Speaker 1: and I might just play your message here and next
- 10:47Speaker 1: week's after party.
- 10:49Speaker 3: In the meantime, I'll be back in a flash.
- 11:13Speaker 1: All right, guys. Last week our Talking Heads episode prompted
- 11:16Speaker 1: a discussion and some questions about New York City in
- 11:19Speaker 1: nineteen seventy seven and which eras were best for the
- 11:24Speaker 1: creation of great music. On that subject, let's hear from
- 11:28Speaker 1: a new listener in the eight four or five.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Hey Jay, just listen to my first episode of Disgraceland.
- 11:34Speaker 2: I was recommended by Scott McLain as the mok Crates
- 11:37Speaker 2: and Turntables podcast, which I contribute to. But I, guys,
- 11:40Speaker 2: gotta tell you your episode on nineteen seventy seven in
- 11:43Speaker 2: New York was spot on. I was eight years old
- 11:46Speaker 2: in nineteen seventy seven. I grew up in New Jersey,
- 11:49Speaker 2: twenty miles outside the city. We were afraid to leave
- 11:52Speaker 2: the house because we all thought the Son of Sam
- 11:54Speaker 2: was in our backyards. It was a crazy time, but
- 11:57Speaker 2: my dad would take us to the city once year
- 12:00Speaker 2: for the Christmas show the Rockets at Radio City, and
- 12:04Speaker 2: I do remember at that time being in the subway
- 12:07Speaker 2: seeing my first crazy man yelling at the world, learning
- 12:11Speaker 2: for my dad how to not pay attention and that
- 12:15Speaker 2: will save you every time subways were rough. I remember
- 12:19Speaker 2: the snowy yurine. Everywhere should be horrible, right, but no,
- 12:24Speaker 2: I'll tell you what. The city was magical, and I
- 12:26Speaker 2: do believe that New York City in seventy seven was
- 12:29Speaker 2: the greatest fertile ground for music because so many different
- 12:33Speaker 2: kinds of music were influenced by it. You hit the
- 12:37Speaker 2: nail on the head when you said hip hop, you
- 12:39Speaker 2: had the Talking Heads, You just had so much going on.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Isn't it funny how a city in shit is appealing?
- 12:47Speaker 2: But I do, I do have fond memories. Anyway, Keep
- 12:50Speaker 2: up the great work, great show. I am now a
- 12:52Speaker 2: subscriber and love what you do. Keep it up.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Thanks Bud all Right eight four five. Thanks for the call.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I love that call act because you're perfectly connecting the
- 13:01Speaker 1: Talking Heads episode theme of New York City in the
- 13:03Speaker 1: nineteen seventies with theme of quote unquote crazy people in
- 13:06Speaker 1: this week's Donnie Hathaway episode. Also, I'm stoked that you
- 13:10Speaker 1: heard about Disgraceland on another podcast. Please thank Scott for
- 13:14Speaker 1: the milk Rates in Turntables podcasts, excellent name, and tell
- 13:17Speaker 1: him to get in touch. I'd like to meet the dude.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Sounds like a great show, all right on Instagram at
- 13:23Speaker 1: Sierra Vince Rights. In regards to the same question, Seattle
- 13:26Speaker 1: in the nineties over New York City in seventy seven,
- 13:29Speaker 1: all day, every day, Sierra, I can't get with that.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I don't think Seattle in the nineties would have existed
- 13:36Speaker 1: if it weren't for New York in nineteen seventy seven.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Think about it. New York in nineteen seventy seven gave
- 13:40Speaker 1: us the Ramones without the Ramones. Seattle doesn't get mud
- 13:43Speaker 1: Honey or the Melvins without mud Honey or the melvins.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Seattle doesn't get Nirvana without Nirvana. It's hard to argue
- 13:49Speaker 1: for Seattle in the nineteen nineties over New York in
- 13:51Speaker 1: nineteen seventy seven, or really anywhere else for that matter.
- 13:53Speaker 1: So all due respect Sierra. I think you're wrong, but
- 13:58Speaker 1: that's okay. It's just an opinion, all right, can't actually
- 14:01Speaker 1: be wrong. Nine oh nine text in Hey love the pod.
- 14:04Speaker 1: It gets me through work every single day. I couldn't
- 14:07Speaker 1: pass this up to chime in. As far as the
- 14:09Speaker 1: most influential music decade slash City, I have to say
- 14:13Speaker 1: the sweet sound of San Francisco of the late sixties
- 14:15Speaker 1: and early seventies is my personal favorite. With the likes
- 14:18Speaker 1: of Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Big Brother in the
- 14:20Speaker 1: Holding Company, Steve Miller Band, Slid and the Family Stone
- 14:23Speaker 1: all so good. I'd love to hear a Disgrace Slam
- 14:26Speaker 1: pod on Hate and Ashbury in San Francisco. Okay, that's
- 14:31Speaker 1: from Samara in the nine oh nine. You got a
- 14:34Speaker 1: solid argument there. Those Bay Area bands during that era
- 14:38Speaker 1: influenced not only, of course the music that came after
- 14:41Speaker 1: that era, but also huge influence obviously on culture in general.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Summer of Love, all that stuff. And yeah, you know,
- 14:49Speaker 1: an episode on Hate Asbury that's actually really interesting. I
- 14:53Speaker 1: can't believe I hadn't thought about that before. But thank
- 14:56Speaker 1: you appreciate the recommendation. More on recommendations coming up. Later
- 14:59Speaker 1: in the pod on the Talking Heads, the five one
- 15:02Speaker 1: nine text in there's no R in Keskersay, dude, that's
- 15:07Speaker 1: just the whole test, the whole text. Excuse me, of course,
- 15:10Speaker 1: that's because I was talking about Psycho Killer, the Talking
- 15:14Speaker 1: Head song, and I pronounced kes caarse with the sound
- 15:18Speaker 1: of an R. So clearly there is an R in
- 15:21Speaker 1: kes caerse when I say a five to one nine.
- 15:23Speaker 1: I appreciate your diligence around the French language, though I
- 15:26Speaker 1: am aware there's no R. Okay. The R is an
- 15:29Speaker 1: accent issue of mine. All right. For those of you
- 15:32Speaker 1: who don't know, I'm from a small, almost entirely Irish
- 15:35Speaker 1: town in central Massachusetts, at least it was almost entirely
- 15:38Speaker 1: Irish when I grew up there. Town is called Clinton, Massachusetts.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Shout out to clowntown Clinton. Those of you are familiar
- 15:44Speaker 1: with it, we'll know it has this strange accent. This
- 15:48Speaker 1: little town in central Massachusetts has an accent that is
- 15:50Speaker 1: unlike any town around it. In this strange accent, I've
- 15:54Speaker 1: always believed is derived from whatever region of Ireland that
- 15:57Speaker 1: early Clintonians came from, and the accent is one where
- 16:02Speaker 1: it is the opposite of the Boston accent, okay, instead
- 16:05Speaker 1: of dropping our ours ca ba Havid yah, all that
- 16:08Speaker 1: crap and Clinton for some reason, we double pronounce our
- 16:13Speaker 1: ours as you can tell, all right. We also inject
- 16:18Speaker 1: ours into words that shouldn't be there, but we double
- 16:19Speaker 1: pronounce them as you can tell them the way I talk.
- 16:21Speaker 1: You've heard I've gotten shit for this and actual reviews
- 16:23Speaker 1: on Apple podcasts. I've gotten shits shit for not being
- 16:26Speaker 1: able to say the word garage. It's a word that
- 16:28Speaker 1: I can't properly say in any any other way than
- 16:30Speaker 1: the way that you just heard it. Garage. Also, like
- 16:34Speaker 1: I said, we add ours where they don't go. Aren't okay,
- 16:37Speaker 1: aren't not? Aunt? Aren't? Why aren't Tracy? Why aren't Poppy?
- 16:42Speaker 2: My?
- 16:42Speaker 1: Aren't Tracy likes red wine?
- 16:43Speaker 2: My?
- 16:43Speaker 1: Aren't Poppy likes betting football and horses? Aren't my? Aren't?
- 16:47Speaker 1: And uncle the extra r kesker say far far far far,
- 16:50Speaker 1: far far far and far all right. I gotta go
- 16:52Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three and
- 16:54Speaker 1: I gotta take a break. But you can hit me
- 16:55Speaker 1: up via voicemail and text on the question of the week, uh,
- 16:59Speaker 1: and of course anything else you want to talk to
- 17:00Speaker 1: me about. You can also hit me up at disgracelam
- 17:03Speaker 1: pod on Instagram, Facebook, x and TikTok. I'll be responding
- 17:07Speaker 1: to more of your questions in the all Access members
- 17:09Speaker 1: exclusive portion of this bonus episode. In the meantime, I
- 17:13Speaker 1: want to answer this one email from Jeremiah Wilkerson, who
- 17:17Speaker 1: writes in, Hey Jake, I just subscribed to the Patreon
- 17:20Speaker 1: to get even more of the podcast. Great episode on
- 17:22Speaker 1: our whalan can we get a Billy Joe Shaver episode?
- 17:25Speaker 1: He was a hero of mine and one of my
- 17:27Speaker 1: favorite curmudgets. Met him several times and he only got
- 17:29Speaker 1: meaner every time until the last time. When I met
- 17:32Speaker 1: him first time, I took a set list that had
- 17:34Speaker 1: blown off the front of the stage and asked him
- 17:36Speaker 1: to sign it, and he said, where did you get this?
- 17:37Speaker 1: And I told him I found it on the ground,
- 17:39Speaker 1: and he snatched it out of my hands and he
- 17:40Speaker 1: signed it. I didn't even get a mile from the venue,
- 17:42Speaker 1: and I rolled my truck window down and it blew
- 17:44Speaker 1: out from under the sun visor. I met him again,
- 17:46Speaker 1: but this time brought my guitar I was collecting signatures
- 17:49Speaker 1: on and I asked him to sign it and told
- 17:51Speaker 1: him the story and how the set list blew out
- 17:53Speaker 1: of the window. Expecting a laugh from Billy Joe Shaver,
- 17:56Speaker 1: I got sounds about right. My last meeting, I pulled
- 17:58Speaker 1: out a poster off the wall venue where the show
- 18:01Speaker 1: was and I decided to go egg him on just
- 18:02Speaker 1: for old time's sake, and asked him to write something
- 18:05Speaker 1: onto the poster, and he responded, I don't take requests.
- 18:08Speaker 1: I don't remember the line, but I quipped something back
- 18:10Speaker 1: and he said, funny, you should be a comedian, and
- 18:12Speaker 1: I said, well, as it turns out, I am a comedian.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I actually am in parenthesesis what it says here. Anyways,
- 18:18Speaker 1: Jeremiah goes on to say he said, tell me a joke,
- 18:20Speaker 1: to which I told him I don't take requests and
- 18:23Speaker 1: not actually going to laugh. I love that old sob
- 18:25Speaker 1: I missed him. I'm not sure what I expected from
- 18:27Speaker 1: a guy who wrote a song if you don't love
- 18:29Speaker 1: Jesus go to Hell. That is from Jeremiah Wilkerson and
- 18:34Speaker 1: Jeremiah great email, Thanks man, I appreciate it. I actually
- 18:38Speaker 1: met Billy Joe Shafer once. I played a show with him.
- 18:40Speaker 1: It was a memorial for a friend of mine. Hours
- 18:43Speaker 1: I should say, a friend of Billy Joe's as well
- 18:45Speaker 1: who passed away down in Nashville, and Billy Joe is
- 18:49Speaker 1: actually quite a sweet guy at that point. This is
- 18:52Speaker 1: very much later on in his career. But this is
- 18:56Speaker 1: getting to a deeper point here that I want to
- 19:01Speaker 1: make about requests about episode requests from you guys. And
- 19:06Speaker 1: you know the answer, I guess, Jeremiah to your request
- 19:10Speaker 1: of if we can do a Billy Joe Shaver episode
- 19:13Speaker 1: is I don't take requests now. I'm kidding. I'll be
- 19:16Speaker 1: back on the other side. You'll hear what I'm talking about,
- 19:18Speaker 1: all right, quick, bring all right, guys. I'm trying to
- 19:34Speaker 1: figure out how to make the disgrace Sland All Access
- 19:35Speaker 1: Club more valuable for all of you as it is.
- 19:38Speaker 1: If you sign up, you become a memory. You get
- 19:40Speaker 1: ad free listening, you know this. You get access to
- 19:42Speaker 1: the chat and Patreon with myself and your fellow discos
- 19:45Speaker 1: talking back and forth pretty much daily. You get an
- 19:48Speaker 1: extended version of these here after party bonus episodes, and
- 19:50Speaker 1: you also get an extra full episode of Disgraceland per month.
- 19:54Speaker 1: And that's all for just five dollars. So to Jeremiah's question,
- 19:58Speaker 1: earlier his request actually his request or Billy Joe Shaver episode.
- 20:01Speaker 1: As you guys know, requests are a huge part of
- 20:04Speaker 1: the Disgrace One community. Part of the fun of the show,
- 20:07Speaker 1: I think has always been thinking about the artists or
- 20:09Speaker 1: the musicians, or the athletes or actors or actresses, etc.
- 20:12Speaker 1: That we can produce full episodes on. We talk about
- 20:15Speaker 1: this all the time in some form or another. And
- 20:17Speaker 1: since I announced the podcasts back in twenty eighteen, and
- 20:20Speaker 1: every time I've mentioned that I was writing or producing
- 20:23Speaker 1: a new season, or any time I mentioned new artists
- 20:25Speaker 1: and I'm researching along the way, there's been a torrent
- 20:28Speaker 1: of requests on who we should cover. And I've always
- 20:32Speaker 1: done my best to listen and to try to accommodate
- 20:34Speaker 1: as many of your requests as I can. But still
- 20:38Speaker 1: there are number of requests that were requested years ago
- 20:41Speaker 1: that we still haven't gotten to. A lot of subject
- 20:44Speaker 1: matter in this area of dark entertainment. Anyways, I've even
- 20:49Speaker 1: gone as far as to change the DNA of the
- 20:51Speaker 1: programming of the show based on your requests. Okay, this
- 20:54Speaker 1: show started out as being just musicians committing crimes, or
- 20:59Speaker 1: that's what it was at anyways, and I altered it
- 21:01Speaker 1: to be about crimes being done to musicians as well
- 21:04Speaker 1: so that I could mainly because I wanted to be
- 21:06Speaker 1: able to cover more women, which was in an early
- 21:08Speaker 1: request that a lot of you had. Turns out that
- 21:11Speaker 1: you know, in the true crime and music space, there
- 21:14Speaker 1: weren't a lot of women behaving as badly as men were.
- 21:18Speaker 1: There's some badass women, of course, yes, with great stories
- 21:21Speaker 1: to tell, but again the focus was much narrower back then.
- 21:25Speaker 1: This eventually, this change eventually gave us episodes on Taylor Swift,
- 21:29Speaker 1: Britney Spears, Debbie Harry, a whole bunch of others. Of course,
- 21:33Speaker 1: pre your requests as well, we broadened our scope even
- 21:36Speaker 1: further so that we can cover disgraceful subjects from outside
- 21:38Speaker 1: of music, actors, athletes, all the folks. I was mentioned earlier,
- 21:42Speaker 1: and again this also came from you, guys. So I've listened.
- 21:45Speaker 1: I've always listened to your request, but I haven't really
- 21:48Speaker 1: figured out a way of soliciting and organizing your requests
- 21:52Speaker 1: and therefore better serving them. And one thing I'm contemplating
- 21:57Speaker 1: is coming up with a system where you guys pick
- 22:00Speaker 1: you guys yourselves pick which episodes that we cover in
- 22:05Speaker 1: our All Access club. So it wouldn't just be me
- 22:08Speaker 1: being like, hey, here's an extra episode this month on
- 22:12Speaker 1: Waylon Jennings or Lane Staley or whoever, Hunter Thompson. It
- 22:16Speaker 1: would instead be you, me, to some extent, your fellow discos,
- 22:20Speaker 1: all of us submitting our requests, somewhere discussing them, and
- 22:25Speaker 1: somehow deciding in some sort of democratic fashion. I guess
- 22:29Speaker 1: what the episodes are that get released exclusively to you, guys,
- 22:33Speaker 1: to the members. So, in other words, if you're going
- 22:35Speaker 1: to pay five bucks a month again an all access
- 22:36Speaker 1: member membership to this restaurant, you're going to get to
- 22:39Speaker 1: choose the off menu meal that the chef is going
- 22:42Speaker 1: to make for you. And I guess I'm the chef
- 22:43Speaker 1: in the analogy. I am interested in talking about this
- 22:47Speaker 1: more with you, guys. I want to know what you
- 22:49Speaker 1: think about this. I have, by no means completely made
- 22:51Speaker 1: up my mind on this issue, but I like it.
- 22:54Speaker 1: I like where the thinking is leading. I'm especially, of course,
- 22:58Speaker 1: interested in those who are already paying for an all
- 23:00Speaker 1: access membership. I'm guessing you guys are going to be
- 23:02Speaker 1: into this. I'm guessing you're gonna have ideas on how
- 23:05Speaker 1: we organize it, So hit me up six one seven
- 23:07Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight to let me
