- 0:07What's up everybody? Welcome to another episode of
- 0:09Rock for Initiative. My name is Phil and I am your
- 0:12host. Today we're talking to Chris
- 0:14from the band Sweet Bike. Chris is honestly one of the
- 0:19most delightful people I think I've ever had a chance to talk
- 0:22to. We talk about a lot of, I mean a
- 0:26lot of different stuff. Chris has a theory about comfort
- 0:29movies. We talk about Nirvana, the band,
- 0:32the show. We talk about Magic the
- 0:34Gathering. We even like talk for a long
- 0:38time about Puppy Monkey Baby. I don't know if you guys
- 0:41remember Puppy Monkey Baby, but we get into Puppy Monkey Baby.
- 0:46I will preface this episode by saying that our interview got a
- 0:50little messed up on the recording software that I used
- 0:53and I was not able to get like the uploaded version.
- 0:57So it's a little low quality, but it's still good.
- 1:02But yeah, Sweet Bike's new album comes out tomorrow or is already
- 1:06out depending on when you're listening to this and it is
- 1:08called Get Off Your High Horses and Raise the roof.
- 1:12And it's pretty phenomenal. I've had a chance to listen to
- 1:15it. We should have a review up on
- 1:17Never a phase Network, which we are a part of.
- 1:20So make sure that you check that out tomorrow as well.
- 1:23There's also a release show for the album next month on the 16th
- 1:28of October and that has fantastic Chicago bands star
- 1:33student and 10 month summer who spoiler alert is the next
- 1:37episode. We talked to Nish, but it also
- 1:41has a new album coming out tomorrow and an EP, an acoustic
- 1:45EP, which I've also heard and which is also very good.
- 1:49So check out Sweet bike, check out 10 Month summer and listen
- 1:54to the episode. It's it's fantastic.
- 1:57Also just want to plug Never Phase Network.
- 1:59Of course, check out Never Phase Network.com.
- 2:04You can read articles, you can read reviews such as the review
- 2:08of the new Sweet Bike album. You can find new podcasts.
- 2:13Listen to like the Dad podcast with Time podcast, Track Marks,
- 2:19which is a brand new podcast by the Fangirls podcast, the Never
- 2:25a Phase Network podcast, and that's all I got.
- 2:29Enjoy the interview. It's kind of long, but you're
- 2:31going to love it. All right, I am here with Chris
- 2:48from Sweet Bike. Chris, how are you doing today?
- 2:51Good. How about you, Phil?
- 2:53I am really excited to talk to you, very excited to dive into
- 2:57the topics that you sent me. So I always share the list of of
- 3:01things that that people sent me. Your list is fantastic.
- 3:05E-mail Music obviously Nirvana, the Band, the Show, Magic the
- 3:11Gathering, comics, movies, D&D and then random pop culture
- 3:16called Random pop culture stuff. Specifically, you called out
- 3:22Puppy Monkey Baby from Mountain Dew.
- 3:24Absolutely under underrated pop culture character that was maybe
- 3:32ever created. I mean somewhat I would say
- 3:34maybe a monstrosity, but I would also say a cultural icon.
- 3:40I can say you know, both can be true.
- 3:42When is puppy puppy monkey babies from 2016?
- 3:46I was like, I've seen puppy monkey baby but it's been a long
- 3:48time. Oh, yeah, it's it's in that it's
- 3:51in that weird crux of time, you know, 2016, very weird time for
- 3:57things, not even gonna lie. I mean, weird time all around,
- 4:01but especially in pop culture and things they decided to do.
- 4:06That was one of those things that I remember seeing when I
- 4:08was younger and I was like, what am I seeing right now?
- 4:11This is this is kind of awesome, but also I'd like so confused
- 4:17like what does this have to do with Mountain Dew?
- 4:19But I love it. So you listed that as like as
- 4:24like a interest that you would geek out about.
- 4:26Tell me more about puppy monkey baby.
- 4:28Like is there a specific lore Is there like how does it relate to
- 4:33to Chris? Well, you know, the thing about
- 4:37puppy monkey baby that really kind of like struck struck a
- 4:41chord with me was that like, First off, puppy monkey baby was
- 4:46not in that many Mountain Dew commercials.
- 4:48I'm talking like maybe like 3, maybe 2 tops.
- 4:54And it was just like little appearances where the puppy
- 4:56monkey baby would just like show up and then sort of like sort of
- 5:00like moving around and dancing. And like, I don't even think the
- 5:04puppy monkey could be baby talked or anything, but it like
- 5:06literally it would just be like human people hanging out and
- 5:10then puppy monkey baby shows up and then and then they're like,
- 5:14yeah, get mad and do you should check it out.
- 5:16It's so sick. And like, there was just
- 5:20something about that to me that just really it it started
- 5:24calling for me for a long time, but then it didn't really like
- 5:28it. Actually, it laid dormant for a
- 5:30hot minute up until, like, I want to say maybe it was 2023 or
- 5:392024 where Mountain Dew was starting to do some other
- 5:43commercials with some weird stuff.
- 5:44And they, I think they included, like, seal on a seal's body,
- 5:49like a, like a, like a seal hybrid.
- 5:52Yeah. And it got me thinking.
- 5:55And it was like something that we talked about, like, on tour.
- 5:59I was like, man, who do you think?
- 6:01Who do you think would win in a fight?
- 6:03Puppy, monkey, baby or or the seal Seal hybrid.
- 6:08Who do you think would win and why?
- 6:11I mean. You've obviously thought about
- 6:13it. I'm I'm biased, I'm biased
- 6:17because I love puppy monkey baby, but I would still pick
- 6:24puppy monkey baby. That's that's really, that's
- 6:25really what it comes down to. I, I was trying to, I was trying
- 6:28to add some like gravity to that, but I no, it's, it's just,
- 6:30it's just really, it's really what it comes down to is it's a,
- 6:35it's a monkey that is, I mean, here's the thing has monkey
- 6:40arms, but it has baby legs and, and the puppy head.
- 6:46So what makes this really tough is that I do think that the seal
- 6:52does have the strength to take down that puppy monkey baby.
- 6:56But the problem is that it's the arms, it's the puppy bumpy,
- 7:01bumpy baby arms. You know the the fact that it
- 7:04can like it, it can like wrap around, wrap around, but I don't
- 7:08know the second. But the only, the only
- 7:13difference between seal like the seal seal is that it is a
- 7:16complete seal. Otherwise having seals faced on
- 7:21it. It's easy to Heidi Klum seal, I
- 7:24would imagine. I would imagine, which also also
- 7:29something about that company Mountain Dew really knows how to
- 7:32make some like weird nightmare fuel for people.
- 7:35I can't imagine. I can't imagine being like like
- 7:407 years old and seeing the commercial for seal like like
- 7:45the seal with the fucking seal on the face.
- 7:47Like I that would actually maybe haunt me for a little bit.
- 7:52What I imagine is going on at the marketing department for
- 7:57Mountain Dew is it's just a bunch of, like, late teenagers
- 8:03drinking a disgusting amount of Mountain Dew and then waiting
- 8:09around till like 3:00 in the morning and then writing the
- 8:11commercial. Yeah.
- 8:13Absolutely. It's it's, it's how it's, it's
- 8:17how I feel about Taco Bell. I feel like they're willing the
- 8:19same. I mean by.
- 8:20The same marketing department, they're just drinking Baja blast
- 8:24and Baja blasting out some commercials.
- 8:30Wow, you know it's it's something else sometimes and the
- 8:34funniest part about it is that like that puppy monkey baby
- 8:37commercial came out in 2016. I was not like I wasn't that
- 8:41young at that point. It was still just AI don't know.
- 8:44It was just something impressible to me that I was
- 8:46like what, but it just stuck to my brain.
- 8:51I'd also. Be happy 10 year Happy 10 year
- 8:56birthday to puppy Monkey Baby. I I hope they bring him back one
- 9:01day. As puppy monkey young man now
- 9:06yeah. Or dog monkey.
- 9:09Yeah, puppy aged too. Maybe in this the.
- 9:12Same. Yeah, I would imagine the puppy
- 9:14part probably ages the same as as the baby part because I feel
- 9:19like they're wanted the same, you know?
- 9:20It's like, yeah, like was a puppy, was a baby.
- 9:24They go hand to hand, right? Yeah, I think Mountain Dew
- 9:28should probably pick that up and fill in some of the lore for the
- 9:3310 for the 10 year anniversary of Puppy Monkey Baby now.
- 9:39And start writing us checks. Right.
- 9:41And start and start writing us checks right now.
- 9:45Or just send us a bunch of Mountain Dew, that'd be fine
- 9:47too. Yeah.
- 9:48You know, honestly, I wouldn't mind that.
- 9:50You know, there was one time we actually got like a, a
- 9:54sponsorship where, well, we just like for, I would say maybe a
- 10:01couple of months straight. We were just like drinking a lot
- 10:04of poppy at the time when it just came out.
- 10:06And I was just like, man, poppy, It would be so cool if you sent
- 10:09over sweet bike the band, just a case of some poppy to fuel us
- 10:15because let's, let's, let's face it, let's face it, we're great
- 10:18for your brand. You're great for our brand.
- 10:21We start getting branded. And ironically enough, they
- 10:24actually did end up sending us a case.
- 10:28We it didn't, it didn't do anything else other than just
- 10:32give us some free poppy for a little bit.
- 10:34And it did feel our band for it, but.
- 10:35That's a win. But they had they had they had
- 10:39bigger artists in mind now they they got like they got like
- 10:41Charli XCX and stuff for poppy, like they're they they're fine.
- 10:45They don't need sweet I'd. Say sweet bike is definitely the
- 10:49win in that scenario. Let's.
- 10:51Maybe not, maybe not like per capita followers, but you know,
- 10:56cool factor. We thought about it before
- 10:58Charlie did. Let's just say that, You know
- 11:00what I mean? They, we, we, we threw it out
- 11:02there. They.
- 11:03Probably had to. They probably had to recruit
- 11:06Charlie. You are a true fan and recruited
- 11:09yourself. Right, exactly.
- 11:11We're we were fueled by it. There you go.
- 11:15All right, let's let's transition.
- 11:17A smooth transition our way over to Nirvana the Band, the show.
- 11:22I found out about Nirvana the band the show the way I would
- 11:27assume a lot of people did when the movie Nirvana, the Band, the
- 11:31Show, the Movie came out. But I know almost nothing about
- 11:35it except that it is about a band called Nirvana the band.
- 11:41So give me a give me and other listeners who may not know
- 11:45anything about it, your rundown of of what the show is.
- 11:49So this show is about two best friends that live in Toronto and
- 11:57they have a band called Nirvana the band and they don't know
- 12:03that Nirvana is a real band. They don't know they didn't know
- 12:07they don't They have no clue that Nirvana even exists.
- 12:11And what makes that so funny is that these two best friends have
- 12:16such a best knowledge of like 90s and 2000's pop culture that
- 12:22it's almost ridiculous to the fact that they don't that they
- 12:26that they don't know that Nirvana's a real band.
- 12:30And so their biggest like goal or like their biggest like
- 12:34achievement, what they plan on wanting to do is they want to
- 12:37play a venue in Toronto called the Rivoli.
- 12:41And the Rivoli is a relatively, you know, mid size music venue
- 12:48that has like it has food in the front and it has a stains in the
- 12:53back. And definitely there's been some
- 12:54notable acts that have played there, like, you know, like
- 12:58Adele's played over there. Like there, there's definitely a
- 13:04good amount of artists that have come through and played in that
- 13:06spot. But The thing is that it's
- 13:11almost a little ridiculous that they wanna like this is like
- 13:14this is like their Madison Square Garden.
- 13:16If they could play here, they're like, this is this is it.
- 13:18We'll be. Famous for people who care about
- 13:21this, it is a 230 cab venue. Yeah, no, it has a yeah, there's
- 13:29a restaurant in the front and they even outside dining area,
- 13:35you know, it's it, it, it's really funny because these two
- 13:39friends, they they want to do, they want to try to do anything
- 13:45they can to book a show at this place, but have no idea how to
- 13:49book a show. Now, granted, that's totally
- 13:52fine. I feel like most people, most
- 13:55common people don't know how to book a show and that's totally
- 13:57OK. But it's, it's the way that they
- 14:00kind of go about it. It's almost like pinky and the
- 14:02brain style where they're like where they're like we got to
- 14:05come up with a new plan every time we we we got we we just
- 14:09have to deal with this one plan and this this plan will get us
- 14:12that show. And that can be anything from
- 14:15putting a banner up across the street from it to, to like
- 14:20trying to kidnap a kid to get a make a wish to, to trying to
- 14:27build a holiday float to go across the street from the river
- 14:31lead. And then the river lead will see
- 14:33it. And then they'll be like, Oh my
- 14:34God, But they have to get a show here.
- 14:36We have to get them over here. And their mindset is almost like
- 14:41they're almost like children in the way that they like, they
- 14:45very much are just childlike in the way that they're just like,
- 14:48there's no way that they would ever book us.
- 14:50We have to do they, we have to do the craziest thing for, for
- 14:52them to get their attention. And you kind of just see the
- 15:00like the adventures of those two go through and like the push and
- 15:06pull both of these characters have kind of also interacting
- 15:11with real life people. Like so so for instance, you
- 15:17know, they they play 2 characters of of themselves,
- 15:22like characterized versions that would be out in public and
- 15:27interact with real people in the sense where they don't
- 15:31necessarily make people the butt of the joke or anything, but
- 15:35it's really just how ridiculous they are in comparison to it, if
- 15:40that makes sense. Like like, like, like kind of
- 15:47like, you know, they'll go up to a person and they're just like,
- 15:49hey, you know, they're like, oh, are you from around here?
- 15:53And they're like, oh, no, I'm visiting from another state.
- 15:55They're like, oh, that's great. We're about to climb up on top
- 15:57of the CN Tower and jump off of it.
- 16:00And then they'll just be like, what, you know what I mean?
- 16:05And, and just the ridiculousness of that.
- 16:07It sounds a little reminiscent to me of like Flight of the
- 16:11Conchords. Like, like very like just two
- 16:16guys playing themselves in a band and just putting themselves
- 16:22in weird situations. Absolutely.
- 16:25It it very much has that vibe it like, you know, it's, it's, it's
- 16:31one of those shows that you can tell that it has it definitely
- 16:34shares a lot of lineage with like things like fly the
- 16:36Conchords or like or like. This is spinal tab, sort of,
- 16:43yeah. Yeah, no, that's a really good
- 16:46comparison. Or like What We Do in the
- 16:48Shadows or like, you know, that kind of 'cause it's also shot
- 16:52like in a documentary style. It it's like a crew of like
- 16:56maybe six or eight people, including the two people who are
- 17:00the main characters. Like the one thing that really
- 17:05kind of drew me to that show, outside of like, it being just a
- 17:08really hilarious show to watch, it kind of just reminded me a
- 17:14lot of the aspect of DIY and like, the aspect of really just
- 17:19like going out there and making your own stuff.
- 17:22Because they're just like a small crew out in Toronto that
- 17:26have been like, doing this since like, 2008.
- 17:31Cool. And yeah.
- 17:33And like, they had like a whole web series.
- 17:36They made ATV show that was two seasons and then made this
- 17:40movie. Where?
- 17:42Where can one watch the TV show So?
- 17:46It's actually all on Hulu and Disney plus now.
- 17:49OK, not, not not the plug Hulu and Disney plus, but I'm also
- 17:52I'm I'm big, I'm big, I'm big hype from my from my Bowie's,
- 17:56Matt and Jay. They deserve they deserve the
- 17:59the credit. They've been working really hard
- 18:01at this and I don't even really know those dudes very well.
- 18:05But like, honestly, from everything that I've like seen
- 18:09about them or like interviews, they just seem like really
- 18:11chilled down to earth people that like also want other people
- 18:16to like try to go out and make their dreams in a way that's
- 18:20even. Like, you know, they talk about
- 18:22it more in the aspect of like filmmaking and doing scores and
- 18:25stuff like that, which is definitely not my realm.
- 18:27You know what I mean? That's, that's pretty outside of
- 18:30my realm. But what I share, I think what,
- 18:33what it shares a very similar DNA is that is that kind of love
- 18:37for wanting to create something that's very uniquely yours and
- 18:41being able to like do it in a way that you know, is on your
- 18:45own terms, which is like, you know, I, I think some of the
- 18:50most important part about like, you know, the DIY ethic of, of,
- 18:54of creating things. And you know, it, it's, it's
- 19:00been really cool to just get to see because like, for instance,
- 19:03like I didn't really get into the show until about 20/17/2016.
- 19:12That's, that's when the, the TV show came out and I got put onto
- 19:16that show from a friend, from a really close friend of mine.
- 19:21They showed me that show. They sat me down and they're
- 19:26like they they had their laptop out.
- 19:28They were sitting in their garage.
- 19:30They were smoking their cigarette and and we were
- 19:33sharing a bowl. They were just like, all right,
- 19:34you gotta watch this show. It's the funniest thing that
- 19:36I've ever seen. And I was like, OK, Matt, I'm
- 19:40down and played the first episode hooked me in, hooked me
- 19:46in immediately just because outside of it being hilarious
- 19:51and then just working hard at it, it's an it's ridiculously
- 19:54clever. It's like, it's like they do a
- 19:57lot of things where they'll make a lot of references to a lot of
- 20:02pop culture things or movies. Like for instance, for anyone
- 20:06interested in the first episode, I won't ruin too much about it
- 20:10for y'all, but I will tell you that you know one of the things
- 20:14in that episode is. They talk about in the episode
- 20:18getting a collection of videotapes and one of those
- 20:20tapes is Jurassic Park and they end up watching Jurassic Park
- 20:24and they they show in the episode them watching Jurassic
- 20:28Park talking about Jurassic Park.
- 20:30And it actually becomes like a pivotal part to the story
- 20:34because like it's, it's like they do little things throughout
- 20:40the episode that just make reference to it in little ways
- 20:43that you don't expect. Like, for instance, there's
- 20:47something really subtle in one of the scenes where like a
- 20:52couple scenes back, they're watching the movie and you see
- 20:54the scene of the of the doctor professor guy looking back at
- 20:59Jurassic Park and he's all like stunned and, and you see Sam
- 21:03Neil, like right behind him to like get get behind him and get
- 21:05him to the like, you know, helicopter, you know what I
- 21:08mean? Yeah, at the very end of the
- 21:10movie, Jeff Goldblum and yeah. They they show you that scene
- 21:14for a second in the TV show and then they do a shot for shot in
- 21:19it in the episode. I love.
- 21:22Later on in the episode, in a way that I was like, that's so
- 21:25fucking funny. Like I in a way that I, I like,
- 21:29I didn't even notice it the first time.
- 21:30It took me a couple watches for me to be like, wait, they're
- 21:34just, they're just literally doing that scene shot for shot.
- 21:38I love, I love those kind of like throwbacks to especially
- 21:42when they're very like subtle and not like overly in your face
- 21:48about it. I I think that's fantastic.
- 21:51Oh, honestly, it's, it's one of those shows this last like
- 21:55things I could talk about probably for hours.
- 21:59Also, because I do really love that that creator, that
- 22:02director's like filmography too. Matt Matt Johnson.
- 22:07He he's, he's one of the characters in that episode and,
- 22:10and, or in the episodes and also like, you know, directs it,
- 22:15directed the movie, directed some other things too that led
- 22:18up before that. And, you know, just has a really
- 22:23great creative mind in a way that I just have a lot of
- 22:27respect for. I'm like, Dang.
- 22:28And like, literally they just put out a movie recently.
- 22:31It was the Anthea Bourdain biopic You Know Tony, which I
- 22:36just saw recently. Wait, I'm sorry, I was thinking
- 22:40Nirvana, the band, the the show, the movie.
- 22:42There was another movie by Matt, is what you're saying?
- 22:46That he just put out recently. And what was that one?
- 22:49It's called Tony. It's the Anthony Bourdain
- 22:51biopic. OK, yeah, I've heard of that.
- 22:55Yeah, yeah, he. Like did it with day 24 like
- 22:58literally has like Antonio Banderas in it and like and and
- 23:03and and Stabi and like it it Oxley.
- 23:09I watched the movie recently, it was great.
- 23:18Yeah, I haven't. I haven't seen that one yet.
- 23:21Is that stolen Peterson? I'm going to have to watch that.
- 23:24That looks really good. Yeah, no, it's, it's it's worth
- 23:27checking out. Plus especially it's because
- 23:28it's like it's really targeting and like looking more into like
- 23:32younger Bourdain life, which I kind of really like a little bit
- 23:35more because to be honest, we all really we know the mythos of
- 23:39Andy Bourdain, the person like they, you know, they were a
- 23:43pretty public figure throughout life.
- 23:44And I think I think the only great way to be able to capture
- 23:50a person's even like slight biopic in that sense is to
- 23:53actually focus it on something that honestly not too many
- 23:56people know about. And that's a lot of like
- 23:58beginnings type things. Him as a like kid.
- 24:01Yeah, the synopsis that that comes up when you Google it's,
- 24:05it's 19 year old Anthony Bourdain stumbles into the
- 24:07chaotic world of a restaurant kitchen.
- 24:11So that sounds great. Yeah.
- 24:13Yeah, no, it's, it's it's worth the watch.
- 24:16I I saw it in theaters. I think it's still in theaters.
- 24:18It's about, I think it, yeah, it looks like it just came out
- 24:20earlier this month. So I would imagine that it is
- 24:23either still in theaters or not widely available yet just yet.
- 24:28But definitely, definitely worth the watch.
- 24:29Yeah, but outside of that too, just like filmography great.
- 24:34Did you watch the family show? Great and the movie just as
- 24:38great dude. Also one thing about the movie,
- 24:41you can watch the movie without watching the show.
- 24:45Yeah, I almost went, I, when it was in theaters, I, I was like
- 24:50looking for something to do and I was like, I this band, this
- 24:52show is called, or this movie is called Nirvana, the band, the
- 24:56show, the movie. And then that is like right up
- 24:59my alley when it comes to humor, that sort of sort of thing.
- 25:03So I did not get out to see it, but that's OK because now I can
- 25:07watch the whole show and then the movie.
- 25:09Yeah, yeah, it's all up on streaming now.
- 25:11Anyone can watch it, which is a beautiful thing because not
- 25:14going to lie, for like the last 10 years I've been using like a
- 25:18Google Drive to share the show with people.
- 25:21I'm like, oh, check out, check out the show.
- 25:22I got a Google Drive of it and they're like OK or, or, or like,
- 25:29or like some people will actually use it and, and it'd be
- 25:31chill. But it was like, I felt so dorky
- 25:34because like, you know, people would ask me when I talk about
- 25:36they're like, where can I stream it at?
- 25:38And I'm just like, you know, you could like you could like buy,
- 25:43you could like buy the first season everywhere kind of.
- 25:46But the second season isn't available anywhere.
- 25:49So you got to use a Google Drive.
- 25:56Well, normally I'm a big advocate for pirating things,
- 25:59but not this. Not in this case.
- 26:01Go support Matt and Jay, That's the other one.
- 26:04Absolutely, Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, go support them.
- 26:06I mean, back back in the day, it was a little bit more acceptable
- 26:09because it was, it was just harder to get things out and
- 26:12honestly. Sure, sure, sure, sure.
- 26:14They were pretty supportive of it, which was nice.
- 26:16But you know, once once everything kind of started
- 26:18coming to fruition and like, you know, everything's kind of going
- 26:23down to how it is now. I actually, I love supporting
- 26:27them a million times over. I like literally great people to
- 26:32support. So do you think that they will
- 26:35show up when Sweet Bike the band books the Rivoli?
- 26:41You know, I hope so because they they do, they do work across the
- 26:45street. From it.
- 26:46Do they really? They really do.
- 26:48That's that's another really funny goofy fact is like they're
- 26:52building is the building that's right across the street from the
- 26:56Rivoli. They work out of that building
- 26:58to left either editing all that stuff.
- 27:03Fantastic. Yeah, we'll just put that out
- 27:06into the universe. You know, Matt and Jay wince we
- 27:09bike books the Rivoli very in the very near future.
- 27:13Come on out. Right.
- 27:15We got to, we got to, we got to create a plan 1st to get there.
- 27:18It's a It's presents its play. It's not.
- 27:20It's not an easy to book I've I've heard so.
- 27:23You know, who knows? Maybe we'll try Flyers.
- 27:26We'll try Flyers first. Yeah, a banner perhaps.
- 27:33So another thing that you listed was just movies in general.
- 27:36And you, you specifically said comfort movies and I am curious
- 27:40about comfort movies. What is your, what is your
- 27:44definition of comfort movie? And then give us an example of
- 27:47some of your comfort movies. So what I would say like a good
- 27:51definition, in my opinion of a good comfort movie is a movie
- 27:56that like is a movie that you can put on at any point in time
- 28:02and it'll instantly transport you into a better mood because
- 28:05because of watching it. Like something like you could
- 28:08you could put on that movie. You could be having the worst
- 28:11day of your life, but you'd be putting you, you'd be putting on
- 28:13a movie on. And you're like, yeah, I like
- 28:16that. Yeah, that's you know what I'm
- 28:18like, you know what? Maybe everything is kind of OK
- 28:20for a second. The world's burning, you know,
- 28:24we've gas prices are insane, can't afford groceries.
- 28:29But this movie, yeah. Like if I if like if I found out
- 28:34that, like if I found out that there was like an asteroid
- 28:37coming to Earth and like there's nothing we could do, Like it's,
- 28:41it's just coming. Like, you know, we got like so
- 28:44and so many hours. I would at least plan some hours
- 28:48to dedicated to like my top three favorite comfort movies
- 28:51because I know that I would want to at least see those all three
- 28:55before I bowed. So what are your what are your
- 28:58top three? In in no particular order, my my
- 29:05top three are it's The Big Lebowski.
- 29:11Great movie. I I do really love that movie.
- 29:14I know some people will say, oh, man, but like, you know what
- 29:19about what happens at the end of the movie?
- 29:21And if I, you know, I'm not going to spoil the movie,
- 29:23everybody. It's been, it's been.
- 29:25I think it's been 30 years. It's it's past spoiling.
- 29:29Hi everybody, Toddy dies and I and I, I'm sorry.
- 29:32I'm sorry if you've never seen this movie and I'm breaking it
- 29:35to you now. I guess I might become your
- 29:38mortal enemy from this, but that's fine.
- 29:40I'll. Put up a I'll put up a spoiler
- 29:42alert right before, right before that place and people can tune
- 29:46away, no. No, no, I think that's perfect.
- 29:48I think that's perfect. I, you know, I mean, some people
- 29:55would be like, oh, man, but like Donnie dies at the end.
- 29:58And I'm like, you know, that is sad.
- 30:01But I will say it's kind of poetic.
- 30:04It's almost a poetic story in a way.
- 30:06I look at it. I'm like, yeah, no, I mean, even
- 30:09like, you hear, like the narrator being like, you know,
- 30:13no one wanted Donnie to die. Like no one wanted like Donnie
- 30:15to be passed. But like, you know, that's how
- 30:18things go sometimes. You can't, you can't blame those
- 30:20things. And made it almost like
- 30:22tragically, tragically beautiful in a way.
- 30:26So that one's a come for movie. What's What's another one of
- 30:30your 3? OK, so another one of the three
- 30:33comfort movies for me is absolutely it's gotta be Walk
- 30:41Hard, a Doobie Cox story. OK.
- 30:45That movie, man. I'll be honest, I don't think
- 30:49I've ever seen that movie. Phil, you gotta watch it.
- 30:52I'm telling you, Phil. I do love that like genre of
- 30:58like, fake biopics that especially John C Reilly, yeah.
- 31:08No, it's it's honestly cinematic masterpiece, that movie.
- 31:15That movie to me is like, you know how everyone really loves
- 31:23like Mel Brooks and like Mel Brooks's style of movies?
- 31:27Sure. To me, this movie felt like an
- 31:29homage to that in ways, while on top of making fun of biopics,
- 31:35right? And there's just something about
- 31:39that to me that it just made me lose it.
- 31:43Plus it's one of those movies that I could put on that movie
- 31:47and I would be laughing all the way through.
- 31:49If there's no, there's no point where I'm like, oh, I'm like,
- 31:54you know, I'm I'm waiting for the laugh to happen.
- 31:57No, no, no, they're, they're kicking right off.
- 31:59Like they, they start right from the get go.
- 32:03Like they show you, they show you Dewey and his brother and
- 32:07they show you how good his brother is and how like
- 32:09ridiculously talented he is and his paws just like, all right,
- 32:13you know, y'all could go go out and have fun today and he's
- 32:17like, all right, well, nothing bad is going to happen to me
- 32:19today. And then literally him and Dewey
- 32:21just start doing the craziest shit.
- 32:24Like they like, they're like riding, they're like riding
- 32:27tractors into each other trying to play like chicken.
- 32:31They're like, they're like playing with machetes.
- 32:34They're like, they're like using a blowtorch to like make
- 32:38classmates things. It's just like just it's it just
- 32:43felt like that kind of classic ridiculous style of like these
- 32:48are we just said all this wasn't going to happen.
- 32:50Here's all of the most ridiculous things on earth.
- 32:54Here you go and like it. It just doesn't stop from there.
- 32:58It just keeps going. That and the cast.
- 33:01Impeccable. That's to say the Jenna Fischer
- 33:05is his his, it says loyal backup singer.
- 33:09I imagine his love interest too, probably.
- 33:12Yes, yes, also second wife in the.
- 33:15Second wife, just like walk the line, right?
- 33:20There's definitely some parallels to that movie in it,
- 33:22but it's like it's like a weird almost parallel of that mixed
- 33:28with just the most ridiculous things.
- 33:32Like, for instance, they do some things where like they show a
- 33:35younger Dewey Cox where he's like about to be like a kid in a
- 33:42in a band with like his first band for the first time playing
- 33:45at a high school thing. And it's like all the bandmates
- 33:48are kids except for John C Reilly, who is just John C
- 33:52Reilly dressed up as like a child.
- 33:55And he's like, it's me, Dewey Cox, 15 year old boy.
- 34:00And they just, they do so much shit like that where I'm just
- 34:03like, I, I lose it. Like there's something about it
- 34:06to me that I'm like. Yeah, it's a Judd Apatow
- 34:11screenplay, it looks like, which is generally pretty good.
- 34:17Rare misses. Yeah, no.
- 34:20And also one of those rare moments where the movie perfect
- 34:25amount of time doesn't feel like it's too long.
- 34:30Just just just just got a problem with that sometimes.
- 34:33Right. Yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 34:36So that's two. What's your third comfort movie?
- 34:401/3 comfort movie for me goes way back and it's because I kind
- 34:47of grew up watching this movie and I grew up watching this
- 34:50movie with like my dad, my sister, like we, we, we like
- 34:56rented it one day and it was the most ridiculous thing I ever
- 34:59saw. And it's called Kung Pao.
- 35:02Enter the 1st. That's a great movie.
- 35:06Kung Pao enter the 1st That movie to me is it's so it is so
- 35:14stupid. It is, it is.
- 35:17It is undeniably a dumb movie. Like there's, there's there's no
- 35:23like, you know how like the other two movies I listed, I'm
- 35:26like, those are comfort movies and those are legitimately both
- 35:29really good movies. This movie I would not say is a
- 35:34good movie, but I would say it brings much comfort to me in the
- 35:38sense that I'm like, I love how ridiculous this is.
- 35:42Right, I say it's a good movie, but I haven't watched it in over
- 35:4520 years. Oh yeah, I may feel different
- 35:48about it. Not in my life.
- 35:50I mean like honestly, the only part in that movie that ever
- 35:53that doesn't that doesn't aids up well is the scene with the is
- 35:59the scene with the CGI cow. Yeah, they try the bottom.
- 36:04When I when you Google it, that's like the the big
- 36:06screenshot. Is this the cow?
- 36:09Absolutely. It was like, I remember, I don't
- 36:12remember when they were promoting that movie, but I have
- 36:14a feeling that when they were trying to promote that movie,
- 36:16that was probably one of the big things they used.
- 36:18They were like, whoa, you remember that seed here, this
- 36:22crazy seed where this cow and they're doing Matrix moves.
- 36:24Do you remember the Matrix? That was pretty relevant for the
- 36:27time. That was crazy, right?
- 36:30And yeah, that was the only scene in the movie for me that I
- 36:34was like, OK, you know, it's OK It's just obviously a period of
- 36:37its time. It wasn't like it was anything
- 36:39offensive. It was just one of those things
- 36:41that I was like, yeah. Well, good to know that if if
- 36:47the world is ending, Chris from Sweet Bikes is going to set it
- 36:51aside at least six hours to watch Kung Pao enter the first
- 36:56Walk Hard and, Oh my gosh, the third one, The Big Lebowski.
- 37:02Most important, The Big Lebowski.
- 37:05Oh I'm absolutely. I'm dedicating those six hours,
- 37:086 plus hours to watch the movies.
- 37:11You give very the dude vibes if and I mean that as a compliment
- 37:17for. Sure, but you.
- 37:18But I appreciate it. Seriously.
- 37:21I mean like it. It's one of those things that,
- 37:24you know, I, I, I will say that is one of the things about the
- 37:28dude that I really did like is just, even though the dude was a
- 37:33pretty self-centered person and kind of like kind of an asshole
- 37:37at times, at the end of the day, he just wanted everyone to just
- 37:41do their thing and be happy. And I, for me, I was like, you
- 37:45know, there's something I can relate to more than that.
- 37:47You know, I'm like, I just want people to do their thing and be
- 37:49happy. That's how I feel.
- 37:51I mean, that's kind of like that's kind of like almost the
- 37:54driving force behind this, this podcast as it has like evolved
- 38:00into really just being about like whatever people want to
- 38:03talk about. It's like, hey, you make really
- 38:05good music, but also like what kind of video games do you play?
- 38:09Like what are the things that make you happy?
- 38:11You know, like, I may not be super into the WNBA, but like, I
- 38:17think it's super cool that you are and I'd love to hear you
- 38:19talk about it. No, honestly, that was kind of
- 38:22what really drew me to the podcast.
- 38:24To be honest, though, it was like one of those things for me
- 38:27that, you know, when I saw you talking to some other people
- 38:29about like some of their interests, I mean, to me, I, I
- 38:34thought that was a great, like, I mean, I'm not even just trying
- 38:37to gas you up right now. I I personally I'm like, I feel
- 38:39gassed. It's in a good way.
- 38:42It's a. It's a great concept because
- 38:43like, you know, at the end of the day, like, yeah, I, I mean,
- 38:48like you said, like a lot of these people like make great
- 38:50music and are doing really awesome things.
- 38:53But like, it's kind of really great and really nice to see how
- 38:57down to earth people can be about just the things that they
- 38:59really love. Yeah, yeah, I love it.
- 39:02I think it's I, I love listening to people talk about this stuff.
- 39:05Like like you, I, I could just talk about some show that I've
- 39:10never watched, but like, hearing you talk about it is just a lot
- 39:14of fun. I appreciate that.
- 39:17So let's, let's do another smooth transition.
- 39:22Let's see, Magic the Gathering is one of the things that you
- 39:24listed. And I have not had someone on to
- 39:26talk about Magic the Gathering yet, at least not at least not
- 39:29in depth. But I would love to hear your
- 39:32Magic the gathering story. Like when?
- 39:34When did you enter the Magic gathering?
- 39:38Like bad habit slash addiction. So I'll paint, I'll paint a
- 39:44scene for you. The year year was the year was
- 39:482007. And I, I got into Magic the
- 39:53Gathering like I imagine most people do in the way that you,
- 39:58you have some friends that start getting interested or you have
- 40:01some friends that you know, that start playing around you and
- 40:04you're like, oh, that's cool. This is a cool, it's a cool kind
- 40:07of concept. And then they start talking
- 40:09about it and they're like, we, you could build a zombie deck.
- 40:12You could build a deck that's just grasshoppers.
- 40:14You could build a deck that's that's like all.
- 40:17Squirrels. All squirrels.
- 40:19This deck just gets rid of everybody's cards.
- 40:22It pisses everybody off. You can you can do that if you
- 40:24want to. And I'm like, I'm like, whoa,
- 40:27that's so sick. So I mean, at the time I didn't
- 40:31have the words to intellectualize and like,
- 40:33intellectualize it like, you know what that kind of game is.
- 40:37But the best way I could ever describe that game to people is
- 40:41that to me, it's just customizable chess.
- 40:44Yeah, you know, you know what I mean?
- 40:45It's like, I mean, like, granted, you know, it's a game
- 40:50where you're versusing another person, but like ultimately you
- 40:54just have like a set amount of life, you have a set amount of
- 40:57cards. And you know, it's when when you
- 41:02dive into it more, it's, it becomes a little bit more
- 41:05complex because there is a lot more rules that have been put in
- 41:07over time. But like, right, overall, it was
- 41:11one of those things for me that just really hooked me in.
- 41:14I think one of the first things I built was I I made a bear deck
- 41:18that was a deck ball bears. It was a green bear deck.
- 41:22It like, you know, it didn't have anything that crazy in it.
- 41:24It just had like and granted for any of those MTG heads out
- 41:29there, I was playing, I was playing standard, which at the
- 41:34time for me, that's just kind of all I knew.
- 41:38What's standard for anyone else who doesn't there?
- 41:41Is a good entry point, right? It's limited the amount of cards
- 41:46that you have to have to be somewhat competitive.
- 41:49Like you don't have to go out and go back to the beginning of
- 41:53time to find cards that are that are good.
- 41:56Yeah, I think, I think it's standard is probably most
- 41:59people's entry point. That or commander.
- 42:02I think commander's also the the other like entry point that a
- 42:05lot of people pull into. No, that's definitely something
- 42:09I've seen kind of a shift. So like, I know for me when I
- 42:13was like getting started with that, like we started doing, we
- 42:16started doing standard and like our person of standard was just
- 42:19like a casual standard in the sense where it was like, it was
- 42:23like, we followed pretty much most of the rules of standard
- 42:26other than like the rules of like some cards like from the
- 42:31past are not allowed. Or like I'm just like, I'm just
- 42:34like, who cares? I'm not, I, I, I'm not, I'm not
- 42:38here in a tournament. I'm not, if we do a tournament,
- 42:41it's going to be a tournament. Our friends like I don't like
- 42:44for me, I was, I just wasn't about that, you know what I
- 42:47mean? And I and I get it, but I was
- 42:49just one of those people who was just like, get whatever cards
- 42:52you have access to. We'll just, we'll just make
- 42:53decks. We'll play, you know, and, and
- 42:58you know, so we never really, we never really put ourselves in a
- 43:01more professional setting or like trying to do anything more
- 43:06more intense like that. But I will say there was a point
- 43:11that I actually, I dropped off for a bit.
- 43:13I, I dropped off a playing around like I want to say 2017.
- 43:25And it was mostly just because I I ended up losing most of my
- 43:28cards in a move with Oh yeah. That'll.
- 43:31Do it. And it's I was just like, OK, it
- 43:33looks like I might just not play for a bit, you know, who knows?
- 43:38And it actually wasn't until like I want to say 2023, where
- 43:46my one of my friends, Simon Small, like he, like they got me
- 43:49back into playing Magic again like we were.
- 43:53Simon. Yeah, he, we were, we were
- 43:55recording with them and they like, they, they like told me
- 43:59about some of the decks they were working on.
- 44:00And I was like, wait, wait, people, people play Matt's The
- 44:04Gathering out here in Chicago. For some reason, for some reason
- 44:09that just blew my mind. Like, I don't know, like there's
- 44:11something in my brain that just told me.
- 44:12I was like, I don't know, maybe people just started to that game
- 44:16anymore. And that was a solid figment of
- 44:18my Matt Mason, because literally I came back and he's like, yeah,
- 44:22I'm, I'm playing commander and I'm like, oh shit, what's that?
- 44:26And then like, I'm like, you know, I, I, but I got, I got the
- 44:31edge. I ended up going to Facebook
- 44:32Marketplace. You know, I, you know, sat out
- 44:36Facebook marketplace. It's a.
- 44:38Facebook Marketplace. Sometimes.
- 44:40Suck if you want to give us a little kickback.
- 44:43Trying to get those Zuck bucks. Trying to.
- 44:46Get those Zuck bucks. I like that.
- 44:50I, I like, you know, I, I, I, I went to Facebook Marketplace.
- 44:57There's someone who was like selling like a box of like a
- 45:00whole bunch of cards for like 25 bucks and I was like banger,
- 45:05I'm, I'm, I'm there. I, I showed up.
- 45:09He like he gave me the box of cards and then also threw in
- 45:12like some sort of really special like, Oh my God.
- 45:16I forgot what kind of, it was like some sort of like
- 45:19anniversary card that was from like the Magic the Gathering con
- 45:23type situation. I had like a little, I had like
- 45:25a little pin. It looked really expensive.
- 45:27But he was like, this is a gift for you.
- 45:28And I was like, I really appreciate that man.
- 45:32But yeah, I from there I started like rebuilding again.
- 45:36And I actually, I reached out to a friend pretty recently because
- 45:41I he was just, he was just wild from talking.
- 45:44And they let me know that actually they had one of my
- 45:47decks from a long time ago and cool.
- 45:50And so I was able to get my bare deck back and.
- 45:53The original, the bare deck. Oh wow.
- 45:57Yep, the same bare deck from 2007.
- 45:59I was able to get that and acquire that back.
- 46:02Which was? I was looking at sets that came
- 46:05out in 2007. So were you like, was it like
- 46:0810th edition? Is that is that when you like
- 46:10started getting in or do you remember even?
- 46:13I, I, I think it was either 10th edition or it was, Oh my God.
- 46:21I also know, I'm, I'm trying to remember some of the other
- 46:23blocks around that time. I know.
- 46:24They had Planer. Planer Chaos came out in the
- 46:28beginning of that year. Future Site came out that year.
- 46:35They weren't doing as. They weren't doing as many sets
- 46:38a year as they do now, no. No, absolutely.
- 46:41They're doing they, I mean, like they're, they're in such crazier
- 46:44territories now. They're like, they're like,
- 46:46when's the SpongeBob set coming out?
- 46:49When's when's, when's the when's the Disney princesses set coming
- 46:53out? I swear Aspero.
- 46:54Really has like gotten. It has turned the game into very
- 47:00much like Fortnite, the card game.
- 47:03Yeah, yeah. And it's not, don't get me
- 47:05wrong, it hasn't necessarily turned me off of magic.
- 47:08And I know actually, ironically enough, I've seen that it's
- 47:11actually gotten some more people into it which like to be real,
- 47:15you know, granted, as much as I'm not as much into the whole
- 47:19IP of it all, I I also do like that it does bring newer people
- 47:25into magic and wanting to get into it.
- 47:27That that for. Me, yeah.
- 47:29Like I I it's I know there are some people who really hate the
- 47:33whole like universe beyond of it all, but I'm like, OK, but where
- 47:38else am I going to be able to play Bilbo and then also play
- 47:42Spider Man into my combo with ING the avatar and Steph Roth?
- 47:50Right, Like I mean, I'm not going to lie, like literally I
- 47:53got AI got a an avatar last I've been to a booster for a friend
- 48:00about that bad boy. I ended up getting APO and I was
- 48:05I was I was slutted. I was like, you know what, this
- 48:09is badass, This is badass. I don't care.
- 48:12Whatever. You know, it's it's like I'm
- 48:16also on the same boat of like, you know, I I'm on the boat of
- 48:21embrace the crowns. Maybe embrace, embrace the
- 48:24crowns. I.
- 48:25Want I want my Magic the Gathering with pizza and all
- 48:29four Ninja Turtles. What I'm talking about, that's
- 48:32what I'm talking about. And I want to use the one ring
- 48:34with them. And and also we're we're going
- 48:38to have April O'Neil show up and she's going to be kicking some
- 48:40ass and, and and we, we got one of the, we got one of the guys
- 48:45from Fallout, he'll be showing the armored guy.
- 48:47He's going to be showing up. Yeah.
- 48:49And then and then you're going to be.
- 48:51The like the Warhammer. Warhammer sets the Doctor Who
- 48:54stuff. It's a whole other world now.
- 48:58It's and I I kind of I love that, you know, as as someone
- 49:02who also just loves the nerd out about like it kind of also feeds
- 49:06into that whole pop culture. You know, that that cool idea of
- 49:09like other things. If they made if they made a
- 49:11Nirvana, the band, the show match card, I would buy that
- 49:16shit right now. Never know, they come out with
- 49:18some crazy stuff, especially on the the what is it the the
- 49:22secret, secret or hidden layer? The secret layer?
- 49:27Secret layer Yeah, yeah, I, I was I'm I'm a big Final Fantasy
- 49:32fan, as anyone who's listened to any of the other episodes of the
- 49:35show will will already know, but I loved the Final Fantasy set
- 49:39like I I yeah that that was the last time I bought paper cards.
- 49:44I'm pretty sure was was for that set and I and I really like I
- 49:47don't, I don't dive too deep except for sets that I'm like
- 49:54really interested in. I play.
- 49:55I like the animal one that came out.
- 49:57I can't remember what it what it's what.
- 49:58It's called I did it. Did it start with an MI forget?
- 50:04I'm like blinking so hard. Oh yeah, I'm blinking too.
- 50:11I think I remember seeing this though I really like.
- 50:13Bloomberg is is what it was. Bloomberg.
- 50:16I was really interested in that in that set too.
- 50:18It was just a really cool. I mean I it's just like dungeons
- 50:23and Dragons care classes assigned to animals like a
- 50:27raccoon Bard that is a necromancer love.
- 50:30Love see, it's like it's like stuff like that that really, you
- 50:34know like I said, still really drops me into it all like, you
- 50:38know even. The war is also so cool, and
- 50:41that's something I haven't talked to anybody about on this
- 50:43show, but like the lore of like the lore of magic be except
- 50:46beyond the universe is beyond of it all.
- 50:49It's like, really neat. Like, no.
- 50:52It absolutely is, yeah. And, and ironically enough that
- 50:57we speak about the lore and and all of that because they tie
- 51:01everything back to Nevada band. The show Matt Johnson is
- 51:06actually making is going to be making a Matt to the Gathering
- 51:09movie. Really.
- 51:11Yes, really. That's really cool.
- 51:12Which is kind of crazy to think about 'cause I'm like, you know,
- 51:16it makes me wonder. I'm like, how you even gonna?
- 51:19How are you even going to go down that route?
- 51:20There's like, I mean, I mean, granted it could do really
- 51:25badly, who knows? But also it's got a giant fan
- 51:30base. So I don't know if they'd be
- 51:31wanting to let that fan base down that hard.
- 51:34I mean, I I find that even movies that do let the fan base
- 51:40down are typically like for me, I think they're they're decent.
- 51:44Like I will here's my super hot take.
- 51:48Like I didn't think the World of Warcraft movie was that bad.
- 51:51Oh, you know, here's the thing. I never saw the World of
- 51:54Warcraft movie. I'm.
- 51:56Not going to go watch it for fun now probably, but like I've I've
- 52:00watched it since it came out and I've I I didn't think it was
- 52:03that bad you. Know that's my, that's how I
- 52:06feel about Pacific, That's how I feel about Pacific Rim.
- 52:09Actually think Pacific Rim is like an underrated movie.
- 52:12Kind of. Rules.
- 52:13It's kind of really good. I mean like, don't get me wrong,
- 52:17it's not the best movie ever written.
- 52:19It is not even it's not even I wouldn't I wouldn't even say
- 52:24it's close to like I, I don't, I don't know what its Rotten
- 52:29Tomatoes score is or like IMDb score right so. 72 on Rotten
- 52:33Tomatoes Hey. So not.
- 52:35Not bad. Actually, OK, the people, the
- 52:38people though, the people. The that's the thing.
- 52:42That's the thing, the people just wanted big monsters versus
- 52:45robots. That's all we wanted.
- 52:47And it's and it's Guillermo del Guillermo del Toro.
- 52:50Yeah. I mean, yeah, Charlie Day is in
- 52:54that movie, Yeah. I, I, I there's some other Idris
- 52:59Elba is in that movie. Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Oh.
- 53:03Yeah, honestly pretty stack cast when you think about it.
- 53:06Yeah, and giant robots fighting monsters, I mean.
- 53:09Who doesn't love to win, right? Everyone loves it.
- 53:12It's. Just fun.
- 53:13If you say you don't love it, you're lying to yourself.
- 53:16Come on, let's be honest, yeah. Because you grow up.
- 53:20Except you love a Pacific Rim that you don't know that you
- 53:23have. It's, it's just like, it's just
- 53:27like, come on, y'all. We're, we're, we're at a point
- 53:29in time where sometimes you just want to watch a movie and you
- 53:33don't, you don't want to have to like, think about the giant plot
- 53:37of, you know, how the, how the robots are made and where the,
- 53:41where the aliens are coming from and all that.
- 53:43Sometimes you just want to watch them beat the shit out of each
- 53:46other and you're like, that's right.
- 53:48Yeah, actually this is what it's all about sometimes.
- 53:52I've been thinking about my comfort movie and we can get
- 53:54back to magic in a minute because I do have some more
- 53:56magic related. Questions.
- 53:57But I've been thinking about comfort movies.
- 53:59I would love to hear them, seriously.
- 54:01The the the one that really like tops the list and pops into my
- 54:05mind is Scott Pilgrim versus the World.
- 54:09I love it. One of my favorite movies.
- 54:12I saw that movie at midnight with like three other people.
- 54:16I bought the I bought the comic books as they came out like just
- 54:23great. I'm a big Scott Pilgrim fan.
- 54:26I can watch that movie anytime and I don't, you know, there
- 54:31have been other times in my life where there were other movies.
- 54:33I actually talked about The Life Aquatic with Steve Zisu with a
- 54:38with Turn 2 earlier in the podcast.
- 54:41I watched that movie like every day when it first came out.
- 54:44I loved that movie and I haven't seen it in years, but it was
- 54:48definitely, at that time in my life, was definitely a comfort
- 54:52movie for me. I I don't blame you.
- 54:55That movie, that movie in particular, I, I rewatched that
- 54:59movie recently. Also a movie I really love.
- 55:02It's it's, it's a beautiful movie, but also really
- 55:06hilarious. But what gets me every time is
- 55:09the ending of that movie. That shit makes me cry every
- 55:13single time. Every single.
- 55:15Another one where someone dies that shouldn't.
- 55:18Right, right. But it's like it doesn't take,
- 55:22it doesn't make the story worse. It just, and in fact, actually
- 55:25makes the story better in a way that like, you know, you really
- 55:28just see how these characters process that, that, that, that
- 55:33grief and how they process, you know, going on this expedition
- 55:38along with all these other things going on.
- 55:43Right. Could just so just so crazy.
- 55:47I forgot about, I forgot about the end of that movie until you
- 55:51brought it up just now. And I'm like, oh man, that's
- 55:53right. Yeah, you know, I'm, I'm not
- 55:57going to, I'm not going to give any more spoilers in this in
- 56:00this interview, just to just to avoid.
- 56:03Back to to to like a close up shot of me saying spoiler alert.
- 56:09No, I kind of I kind of love that, especially for movies that
- 56:11are like already like 20 plus years old.
- 56:13I'm like, I'm like, yeah, sorry guys, I'm trying.
- 56:16I'm. Trying.
- 56:17Did this movie come out? I think this was like 2004.
- 56:20Yep, 2004. It's you know, it's just I get
- 56:26it's just one of those movies, though.
- 56:28I like when you looked at that end, I it it's just, you know,
- 56:36you, you go through the whole movie because this is like the
- 56:39whole expedition, right? Like, you know, it gets
- 56:41everything up to that point and then it just getting to that
- 56:45point and just reminding him of his friend and and Oh my.
- 56:56I think I think I don't know I have a love hate relationship
- 57:01with with Wes Anderson for sure. Like like some of his movies
- 57:09really speak to me. Some of his movies are big
- 57:11stinkers in my opinion. I love like the fantastic Mr.
- 57:15Fox is like such a good movie, so many good easy things to
- 57:22quote. But like that he he does have
- 57:25like a really good way of like playing at emotions, I think in
- 57:30the most absurd ways. Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 57:36I mean, like, that is something I, I gotta give him a lot of
- 57:40credit for in the way that it's like, you know, for instance, I,
- 57:46I, I'm not sure how you felt about Royal Tenenbaums, but I.
- 57:51I enjoy that movie. I wouldn't I I don't think I
- 57:54could sit down and watch it more than once a great while for.
- 57:59Sure, for sure, But I I, I will say that movie still has a way
- 58:04of even when that movie and I would argue and say this is
- 58:07maybe one of their more his more ridiculous goofy movies, more
- 58:12eccentric movies. I mean, like Gene Hackman is
- 58:14just like a a ridiculous eccentric character throughout
- 58:17the whole movie. But even throughout that, they
- 58:22still find a moment to to show that vulnerability, even in that
- 58:29ridiculous character in Gene Hackman in that moment, you
- 58:32know, yeah, him wanting to have a genuine, genuine connection
- 58:36with his grandkids. And, and that like, like, for
- 58:40instance, the whole, the whole sequence, the whole sequence of
- 58:44when he he took the kids out like playing hooky and they were
- 58:49just like, and they were just like, you know, having a goofy
- 58:52adventure. And then literally he like
- 58:54brings the kids back gambling and like and it and it's like,
- 58:59it's all so ridiculous, but it's all also kind of heart warming
- 59:04in a way where you're like, this person has not been in these
- 59:07kids lives at all. These kids barely know this
- 59:09person and would like to have a connection with this person.
- 59:13And this is maybe the closest they'll probably get to that.
- 59:17What a great cast, too. I'm just so sorry.
- 59:20I'm like looking at the cast and I'm like, I forgot, like just a
- 59:26bunch of people who will like now are like huge names that
- 59:30everybody knows. Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, Ben
- 59:32Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bill Murray, Danny Glover.
- 59:37Yep, Yep. Love me some Danny Glover.
- 59:41Same and you know, I I will say this was my this would have been
- 59:47my 4th pick for comfort movie. OK, my my 4th my 4th pick for
- 59:52comfort movie would have been would have been be kind rewind
- 59:57that movie. Yes.
- 1:00:00When I said Danny Glover just now, that popped into my head.
- 1:00:02I was like, oh, what a what a great Jack Black.
- 1:00:06Who's the Who's the other most deaf?
- 1:00:10Most deaf? It just that movie was another
- 1:00:14one of those movies for me that when I watch, if I put that
- 1:00:17movie on, I'm in a great mood and I like.
- 1:00:21It's a love letter to so many other movies too, right?
- 1:00:26And I, and I, I love things like that.
- 1:00:27Like I, I love stuff that's like, you know, feels like an
- 1:00:31homage to, to movies and also just like a movie about like a,
- 1:00:36a community and a community, a small community wanting to like
- 1:00:38stick together for like, you know, a, a, a local video store.
- 1:00:43And there's just something so like, even if you don't live in
- 1:00:49a day and age of video stores anymore, I still think that if
- 1:00:52you'd watch this movie, you would have a lot of love and
- 1:00:55care for these characters and and setting it's in and.
- 1:01:01Right around the time that this movie came out, I worked I
- 1:01:04worked at a video game store. I worked at game Crazy and I
- 1:01:07don't know, I don't know if kids these days aren't going to
- 1:01:10understand game crazy. Game Crazy was in, it was like a
- 1:01:13GameStop but inside of a Hollywood video.
- 1:01:16So all of my Co workers, all of my Co workers were video like
- 1:01:21worked at the video rental store and I just went into the back
- 1:01:23and sold video games and played video games all day.
- 1:01:26I've sold a few, played many. Nice.
- 1:01:31But yeah, definitely like a cool vibe to work at a movie rental
- 1:01:37place when when this movie came out.
- 1:01:39Oh absolutely. I remember when I was actually
- 1:01:43around this time too. I actually I worked at a local
- 1:01:46video store in my hometown. With the name then then
- 1:01:51Hollywood Video I'm sure. I don't know.
- 1:01:54I, you know, I, I definitely, it was one of those things when I
- 1:01:58worked there, I felt like I was in the movie Clerks, Yeah.
- 1:02:02Where I just was like, you know, I was working and everything
- 1:02:06was, I mean, I wasn't as bad as like Randall was, but like, I,
- 1:02:09I, I, I just genuinely, I did my job.
- 1:02:13It was a, it was a video store in a small town and it was just
- 1:02:18really silly to me sometimes. Like for instance, I had like AI
- 1:02:23had like a full punk band at the time and I like we, we all tried
- 1:02:27to fit ourselves. We, we had a big thing where we
- 1:02:30just want to practice in really weird places.
- 1:02:32And so since I worked at the video store, I was like, guys,
- 1:02:36let's all practice in in the porn section.
- 1:02:38It's a really small, it's a really small, really small box
- 1:02:43room with like western flat doors.
- 1:02:46I was going to relate to you because I worked at a Mexican
- 1:02:49restaurant for a long time and I was in a band and I would have
- 1:02:53my bandmates come after hours because I was I was like a shift
- 1:02:57manager and we would play in like the backroom of this
- 1:03:00Mexican restaurant. But the porn section of a video
- 1:03:03rental store is definitely a cooler story.
- 1:03:08It was just so silly because it was four of us.
- 1:03:11We were all playing acoustic instruments.
- 1:03:13One of us was a stand up bass player, the other one was
- 1:03:16playing violin. The other person was playing
- 1:03:19banjo and I was playing guitar. And we all tried to fit inside
- 1:03:22of this porn video section and we we knew.
- 1:03:27You had to try to fit a drum kit in there, right?
- 1:03:29No, exactly. And I will say, trying to fit
- 1:03:33the bass, the big stand up bass, the big.
- 1:03:35Stand up bass. It almost felt like a drum kit.
- 1:03:40Well, I want to, we're, we've been talking for, for a while
- 1:03:42now. This is how these episodes
- 1:03:44always go. I get to the end and I'm like
- 1:03:46now I still have so much more I want to talk about.
- 1:03:48I, I want to pivot back to, to magic real quickly.
- 1:03:53Are you still playing? Like, are you actively playing?
- 1:03:56Are you a blue player or are you a good person?
- 1:04:02You know, actually that might be one of the best questions I may
- 1:04:06have ever gotten about magic. I will say I, I, I am AII do
- 1:04:14like I, I'm I'm mostly like a 2 colored type deck person.
- 1:04:19I, I, I'm a really big fan of like, like a like a black and
- 1:04:24white deck. I love I and I I can't remember
- 1:04:28what the term is for it. Gosh, it's like on the tip of my
- 1:04:32tongue. I love black and white.
- 1:04:34That is my favorite way to play. I love the like give and take,
- 1:04:38the like in commander decks. A lot of times those like the
- 1:04:42prefabs commander decks are like if it's black and white it Orsov
- 1:04:49I think is what it's called. Yeah.
- 1:04:52If it's black and white, it is like a very much like a like
- 1:04:55political deck. Like you're going to like
- 1:04:57convince other players at your commander cube to attack other
- 1:05:02players and not you and we'll both benefit.
- 1:05:05Yep. Yep.
- 1:05:07It's like, I think what's so fun about the different play styles
- 1:05:11and especially like the different colors and
- 1:05:13combinations is that they're all so interchangeable and all in
- 1:05:17ways that you you can really do anything you want, which is so
- 1:05:22much fun. Like I like another color combo.
- 1:05:26I really love. I love a green and red deck, A
- 1:05:28green and red deck. Big monsters blow things up.
- 1:05:32Yeah, I love it. There's so much fun about it.
- 1:05:36They one of the things you you mentioned that it was kind of
- 1:05:40like like customizable chess and I think that that's a great
- 1:05:43analogy. I just my favorite thing about
- 1:05:47magic is playing with people who care less about winning and care
- 1:05:51more about doing cool stuff. And I think you find that in in
- 1:05:56commander a whole lot less in standard.
- 1:05:58But like people who just want to play these weird jank like I'm
- 1:06:03gonna I'm gonna find one way to meet my insane win condition or
- 1:06:07I don't care if I win. Yes.
- 1:06:10No, absolutely. Like, you know, that that was
- 1:06:13like when I started jumping into commander.
- 1:06:16And now granted, I only, I've only played commander a handful
- 1:06:19of times, you know, I'm still pretty fresh on that.
- 1:06:22But I, I, I, I can tell that it's definitely very much the
- 1:06:27vibe, especially with like playing with friends that love
- 1:06:29building up things like it. It was kind of like that.
- 1:06:32Like we were at a point in the game where we were like they
- 1:06:36were trying to build up stuff. I was at like a standstill with
- 1:06:39them. And, and like we've already been
- 1:06:42playing for like 2 hours and 30 minutes at this point.
- 1:06:45And now this is where it kind of like really threw me off because
- 1:06:50I was like, I've been so used to playing games that like only
- 1:06:53really ever last like maybe an hour, maybe an hour and a half
- 1:06:58hour 45 if you're really like building stuff up, you know, but
- 1:07:02like, you know, playing for that 2 1/2 hour mark, I was like,
- 1:07:07whoa, this is this is too long. Why are we, why this is take
- 1:07:12we're just taking too long. And that's, I mean, that's my
- 1:07:16maybe only controversial take about commander.
- 1:07:18But I will say also on a, on a, on a lighter note, I have not
- 1:07:25got to play it as much. So maybe I just need to give it
- 1:07:28a list of more time? I think another thing I'll say
- 1:07:31about Commander that I think is, is really good for the game in
- 1:07:34general is you can go to a local game shop, a local card store,
- 1:07:40whatever you want to call them. And you can at any given time,
- 1:07:46depending on what they've got going on, you can find like a
- 1:07:51commander pod to like sit in on. And people are very welcoming
- 1:07:55most of the time, like the community, you you're gonna run
- 1:07:58and see your bad eggs too for sure.
- 1:08:00But but generally speaking, I think people who are like
- 1:08:03playing commander at a, at a game shop are like, you know, be
- 1:08:06super patient if you don't know how to play.
- 1:08:08And it's, it's a, it's a like a fun entry point.
- 1:08:12Like you can buy, you spend 40 bucks or whatever, get your 100
- 1:08:16card deck if that's all prefabricated and then it's like
- 1:08:19good enough to play with yeah and learn even if you aren't a
- 1:08:23Magic player. But.
- 1:08:25Absolutely. I mean, like honestly, I'll
- 1:08:27recommend the precon decks every time to people.
- 1:08:30Like even still, like even if you've been playing for a while,
- 1:08:34those decks are fun and they're fun in a way that like, whether
- 1:08:38or not you've been playing like for your first time or you've
- 1:08:41been playing for a long time, they're great for both of those
- 1:08:44things. Like, yeah, they're, they're
- 1:08:46great for a jumping off point for anyone just wanting to get
- 1:08:49into it. But they're also great for,
- 1:08:50like, if you want to grab something that you kind of want,
- 1:08:53like you really like the idea, but you want to like, customize
- 1:08:55more. Yeah.
- 1:08:57It's a great starting point for sure if you like don't want want
- 1:09:00to venture out to build your own 100 card deck.
- 1:09:06So here's my, this is my, this is the part of the podcast where
- 1:09:10I content farm. I'm going to ask you a
- 1:09:13ridiculous question. I'm, I'm going to go through all
- 1:09:195 magic colours and I want you to give me the Midwest emo band
- 1:09:25or just emo band in general that you feel fits that colour theme
- 1:09:30the best. You have to answer right away,
- 1:09:32but I, but I definitely need an answer.
- 1:09:34All right, we'll start. We'll start with let's start
- 1:09:39with green. You know, it's tough because
- 1:09:44there's actually a lot of emo bands that I would actually put
- 1:09:47in the green category, so it's a little bit tough to.
- 1:09:52You can you can name a couple. Why not?
- 1:09:55We make the rules. You know what?
- 1:09:57Hey, you know what? You're right.
- 1:09:58You're right. I I would put the band Swiss
- 1:10:02Army Wife in in the green category.
- 1:10:06Close Swiss army wife. Yep, same.
- 1:10:09What always in the They're green.
- 1:10:11I don't know, they just they give me that kind of vibe of
- 1:10:14like of like, you know how like in a green deck you you're like,
- 1:10:19it's usually people playing some crazy stuff and they're like, we
- 1:10:22don't give a we don't give a fuck.
- 1:10:23This is bad ass. Check check it out.
- 1:10:26And that's that's. Kind of like 251010 monsters
- 1:10:31that I'm going to now make 2525 monsters.
- 1:10:34Right, or or those or those or those mother fuckers who are
- 1:10:37like actually check out all of my 101 One Saperling tokens.
- 1:10:46Saplings, man. Were you like, were you like or
- 1:10:51like or like an elf deck? You know, and, and they're like,
- 1:10:54actually, I'm gonna use like all these elves to like tap some
- 1:10:58mana and then actually see like a whole bunch of more elves that
- 1:11:01do some other crazy things. Like there is something about
- 1:11:06the color green that I actually feel is severely underrated.
- 1:11:12And and the only reason I say that and it sounds silly.
- 1:11:15I feel like even saying that out loud because I'm also talking
- 1:11:17about the deck with the big crazy monsters.
- 1:11:20But also, I would say it's one of those decks that I think is
- 1:11:27known for its big crazy monsters, but I think isn't
- 1:11:31known for all the other things that it can do.
- 1:11:35Right. Like for instance, I think one
- 1:11:38of my favorite green decks that I've ever played with and I
- 1:11:41still miss it till this day. It was like a pre con deck.
- 1:11:44It was a tree folk deck. OK.
- 1:11:47I think it came out around maybe 2010.
- 1:11:51Maybe it was part of the Mirror Win series.
- 1:11:56OK. But that deck ruled that pre con
- 1:12:02deck it was maybe 1 of the coolest things I ever.
- 1:12:07Played with four. No, that's not the wrong.
- 1:12:11That's a different one. I love looking up old decks and
- 1:12:15seeing how expensive. Yeah.
- 1:12:17Yeah, absolutely, because some of them are crazy.
- 1:12:22I gotta move you just for a SEC because I gotta hook you up to a
- 1:12:24charger. Yeah.
- 1:12:28But. Swiss Army wife is your Is your
- 1:12:32green deck band OK? Yeah, I I would put, I would put
- 1:12:37Swiss Army wife in the green deck category.
- 1:12:40I would also put let me think, let me think.
- 1:12:49Oh, oh, oh, I would also put the band presses Little life in in
- 1:12:56in the green category. And also mostly because they're
- 1:13:01just one of those, they're one of those emo orchestra bands,
- 1:13:05you know what I mean? They they got they got the
- 1:13:06numbers, they got the numbers much like a green deck one.
- 1:13:12And then I think the third band I'd put in for the color green
- 1:13:17would be, oh, camping in Alaska. I think that makes a lot of
- 1:13:27sense. Yeah.
- 1:13:29Ways. Yeah, I, I just, I feel it.
- 1:13:33I don't know. I don't have my reasoning for
- 1:13:35them. I'm not even alive with you on
- 1:13:37that one. But I will tell you that's the
- 1:13:39energy. It's the energy they got green.
- 1:13:41Energy with Alaska, you guys are green deck.
- 1:13:43Yeah. You're giving green energy.
- 1:13:47You got you got green deck energy.
- 1:13:49Let's let's see. Let's go red next.
- 1:13:53OK, OK, Red. I would absolutely put, I mean,
- 1:13:58right off the bat, Harrison Gordon is red.
- 1:14:02All right. Harrison Gordon, Red Deck Band.
- 1:14:07They're they're they're they're throwing.
- 1:14:09They're stuff like you're. Blowing stuff up.
- 1:14:10Yeah, they're throwing lightning bolts.
- 1:14:12They're throwing fucking. They're, they're, they're,
- 1:14:16they're, they're doing all kinds of fucked up shit, and in the
- 1:14:20best ways, in the best. In the best ways, I love that we
- 1:14:24had Orpen on and I may get some more I may get some more members
- 1:14:28of Harrison Gordon on at some point, but I do I like I like
- 1:14:31red for them. That's that's that's great.
- 1:14:34Even like the haste, the haste side of things like double.
- 1:14:39Strike, you know, the the the I'm blanking on some of the
- 1:14:44other. There's there's some.
- 1:14:45Like the Harrison Gordon double strike aspect too.
- 1:14:48That's that's good. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 1:14:53Do you have other bands that are?
- 1:14:54Do you throw in red? You know, there would be maybe
- 1:14:57one other band I'd put in the red category, and I'd probably
- 1:15:02say that would also be the band Arcadia Grey.
- 1:15:06So, so great. I love Arcadia, OK?
- 1:15:09Yeah, no. Great band, definitely a red
- 1:15:12deck. They're, they're, they're,
- 1:15:15they're, I don't, I don't, you know, they're, they're playing
- 1:15:18like a goblin deck, you know what I mean?
- 1:15:20And they're, they're like, they're like they're throwing
- 1:15:22some crazy shit at you. Arcadia Gray is just out here
- 1:15:25playing Goblin tribal. All right, we're going Color
- 1:15:32Wheels, so Black is next. Who?
- 1:15:34Who are your Who are your black emo bands?
- 1:15:37I mean, right off the bat, I mean, and this is I feel like
- 1:15:41pretty easy picks, but I would put the band Dikembe.
- 1:15:46Dikembe is hands down. They're swamped.
- 1:15:50They're they they are a black deck band.
- 1:15:53They are a band that not only will like fuck you up by doing
- 1:16:00like crazy things with having death tuts and and and having
- 1:16:05and having creatures go in the graveyard and coming back to the
- 1:16:08back to the battlefield from that.
- 1:16:10Yeah, that's Dikembe all the way.
- 1:16:14And then the other band would also be, Excuse me, who are you?
- 1:16:17They would also. Yes.
- 1:16:20Emily is absolutely a black deck band.
- 1:16:25Like, you know, there's vampires in this in this deck.
- 1:16:28I'm sure that if they I'm sure if they added some of the
- 1:16:32characters that they've they've used from some of their imagery
- 1:16:35and some of their stuff, you know, I mean, honestly, hey,
- 1:16:40when when are we going to start getting some perfect blue cards?
- 1:16:44What are we going to start getting some perfect Blue Magic
- 1:16:46cards? Come on.
- 1:16:47I'm talking. I'm talking to you, Hasbro.
- 1:16:49Come on. Get out here.
- 1:16:52Well, Speaking of blue, well, who are your who are your blue
- 1:16:55bands? OK now by the way, when I when I
- 1:17:00preface preface this, when I talk about any of these bands
- 1:17:05and calling them blue, this is not hate.
- 1:17:07I'm not hating on y'all. I think, I think actually you
- 1:17:12could say someone is like a blue deck band and it's like a big
- 1:17:16compliment because it's very like blue is very cerebral, like
- 1:17:19very much like a thinker, a planner, strategizer, very much
- 1:17:26like in Control of What's Happening or mermaids.
- 1:17:31Yes, I mean honestly or or fairies.
- 1:17:34Or fairies, Sure. Flying, you know.
- 1:17:39Oh, oh, You know, I had to think on this one.
- 1:17:43I oh, actually, no, I don't have to think on this one that hard.
- 1:17:50We are amphibians. Army amphibians.
- 1:17:55Yeah, yeah. Army amphibians.
- 1:17:56I do that all the time. Don't tell them because Brandon
- 1:17:59was on the show. I do that all the time.
- 1:18:01I don't know. I'm like, I'm I'm aren't we
- 1:18:04amphibians dyslexic for some reason?
- 1:18:06You know, I I just regularly dyslexic and that is actually
- 1:18:10the reason for me. I'm like, no, it's, it's like
- 1:18:14one of those things where I'm like, damn it.
- 1:18:17But yeah, aren't we amphibians? Like literally that band?
- 1:18:22Absolutely. Blue deck band.
- 1:18:25I would also put the band Kerosene Heights in that in that
- 1:18:28category. I'm from North Carolina, they're
- 1:18:31from North Carolina. I just, I love kerosene heights
- 1:18:34and oh, I, I actually agree. Like I can see them being like
- 1:18:38the very like like thinkers like.
- 1:18:40Yes, yes. Chill, yeah?
- 1:18:44It's like they're the types that are like that are like thinking
- 1:18:48it. They're like thinking and
- 1:18:49planning. And then when they and then when
- 1:18:51they do, when they do like pounce, it's like one of those
- 1:18:55things that like almost sweep you up like a whirlwind.
- 1:18:57Like you're like, you're like, oh, fight, what the hell?
- 1:19:00Surprise you they come out of nowhere and you when you least
- 1:19:02expect it. Counter card.
- 1:19:06Seriously. I'm, I'm literally like, they're
- 1:19:09like. It they're great.
- 1:19:14I cast fireball. No, I cast new tattoo and that's
- 1:19:17countered. Yeah, that's good.
- 1:19:25All right, last color is white. And what I put in in the white
- 1:19:33category for bands, it's, it's a little tough, but I, I think I
- 1:19:40got it. I I think I would add the band
- 1:19:44Holidays in the United. States OK I'm not familiar with
- 1:19:47them but I will check them out now but.
- 1:19:50That band rules. They they are, I mean not not
- 1:19:54the not the hype them up to our, but like they they.
- 1:19:58Hype them up. Shout out Holidays in the United
- 1:20:01States Holidays in the United States.
- 1:20:03Yep, holidays in the United States.
- 1:20:04Yeah, they, they put out like 2 albums and both of those albums
- 1:20:10they're fucking baller. They're really good.
- 1:20:12They sound like they were made in 2016.
- 1:20:16And it's so strange for me to say something like that because
- 1:20:20I've, I've listened to things that have been recorded in that
- 1:20:23time, but this like literally sounds like it.
- 1:20:26But it was just recorded in like 2024.
- 1:20:28And I'm like, I'm like, to me it feels like listening to Snowing
- 1:20:32again for the first time. That's great, they're on my
- 1:20:37list. I just followed them on Spotify
- 1:20:38so I can check them out later. And then actually, ironically, I
- 1:20:45would also put Snowing the Band as a white deck, not going back.
- 1:20:53Going back to holidays in the United States.
- 1:20:56Why? Why are they the white band?
- 1:20:58What's what? What gives them that white white
- 1:21:00deck vibe? They like, you know, they got
- 1:21:03that kind of energy about them that like, you know how like
- 1:21:07when a white deck comes in, it feels kind of confident, you
- 1:21:12know what I mean? In a way where you're like, they
- 1:21:14feel protected, like there's something.
- 1:21:17Very protective, like kind of homey almost.
- 1:21:19Yes, yes, Homey has the ability of bouncing back really well
- 1:21:27they. Don't count them out, they can
- 1:21:29come right back and get ya. I think they're also one of
- 1:21:35those bands. And I would also say the same
- 1:21:37thing about white decks is underestimated.
- 1:21:42I, I, I kind of put white decks in that underestimated category
- 1:21:47because I know while they do have a lot of life gain
- 1:21:50abilities, they do have a lot of things like soldiers and, and
- 1:21:53other things of other natures like, you know, angels, stuff
- 1:21:56like that. But like, I don't know, I think
- 1:21:59they have a lot of really cool versatility in a way that some
- 1:22:03of the other colors don't like that.
- 1:22:08And then I'm sorry I interrupted you.
- 1:22:10You you said Snowing mostly because of the name Snowing.
- 1:22:14Well, not not just because of the name Snowing, but because
- 1:22:18also white to me is a little scrappy.
- 1:22:22Like, do you, you, you pull out a white deck, some people either
- 1:22:26dismiss you or they'll be like, they'll be like, all right, this
- 1:22:29guy's just going to gain a lot of life.
- 1:22:31This person's just going to this mission's just going to like
- 1:22:33make it a little annoying for me.
- 1:22:36Right. And now?
- 1:22:38You leave that, you leave that 1/2 soldier on the battlefield
- 1:22:42long enough and it will destroy you.
- 1:22:45Yep, Yep. It's going to come up with first
- 1:22:47strike and you're going to be like, oh man.
- 1:22:53All right, well, let's let's do our last pivot and talk about
- 1:22:57Sweet Bike. You guys have been releasing a
- 1:22:59bunch of singles, which is super exciting.
- 1:23:02I have I, I didn't know Sweet Bike very well before, before we
- 1:23:09met each other on Instagram a couple of weeks ago, but I have
- 1:23:12really enjoyed it. I definitely vibe with your
- 1:23:15music. Is there more coming?
- 1:23:17What do you guys have coming up? Yeah, yeah, actually we have a
- 1:23:22full album that's going to be coming out.
- 1:23:25It's called Get Off Your High Horses and Raise the Roof.
- 1:23:30It it it comes, it comes out September 11th.
- 1:23:33OK, that's. Very.
- 1:23:37Soon, Yeah. And, you know, we're trying to
- 1:23:39just give people a new reason to remember things, to remember our
- 1:23:43album in a way that only we can do it.
- 1:23:47And also this time around, it's, it's kind of a little bit
- 1:23:52different for us because we're going a little bit more of an
- 1:23:53evil route. We're we're going evil this
- 1:23:56year. Going black deck.
- 1:23:58Yeah, we're going black deck this year this this year, this
- 1:24:02year sweep like the band we're using we're zombie black deck.
- 1:24:07Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you better watch out too.
- 1:24:10It's. Watch out.
- 1:24:12Messed up you're. Going to get me cook massacre.
- 1:24:20I, I, you know, but besides the album coming out in September,
- 1:24:26we are also, along with that we have like, you know, vinyl and,
- 1:24:33and tapes and CDs, stuff like that.
- 1:24:34This will also be going along with the album and we also have
- 1:24:40an album release show that's going to be happening later in
- 1:24:42October. Cool, has that been announced
- 1:24:45already? Yes, yes, it's, it's going to be
- 1:24:48October 16th. Right on.
- 1:24:52Well, that's really cool and hopefully you guys get out on
- 1:24:55tour sometime in the near future too.
- 1:24:59It's definitely, it's definitely on our on our on our list to do.
- 1:25:03That's definitely what we plan on doing over in the springtime.
- 1:25:06We plan on taking the rest of the winter to kind of work on
- 1:25:09some writing some more and then kind of get back out there.
- 1:25:12Right on. Well, I'm excited for the new
- 1:25:15album. I'm, I'm.
- 1:25:17I'm writing down the date right now.
- 1:25:21Although it should be easy to remember. 911 can't forget.
- 1:25:25I'm old enough that it should be very easy for me to remember.
- 1:25:30You know, I, I've been, I've been, I've been hearing that
- 1:25:32it's a good year for 911. I don't know.
- 1:25:35It's a good year of the 25 year anniversary.
- 1:25:37Yeah, I I heard, I knew. It's a good year for it.
- 1:25:39I don't know. I'm not, I'm no, I'm no expert.
- 1:25:42Don't quote me on this. All right.
- 1:25:48Well, Chris, thank you again so much for coming on.
- 1:25:51I appreciate it. Everyone go check out Speed
- 1:25:53Fight and make sure you check out their album on the 11th.
- 1:25:57Thank. You.
