- 0:04Hey everyone, welcome back to the show. I'm Chris,
- 0:07and today we're tackling one of the most common
- 0:09kitchen dilemmas in America. What do you do with
- 0:12those golden oak cabinets from the 90s? You know
- 0:15the ones. Now I've got our resident kitchen design
- 0:18expert Jessica here with me today. Jess, I know
- 0:23you've transformed hundreds of these kitchens.
- 0:25Is it really as bad as people think? Oh, not
- 0:28at all, Chris. That's the biggest myth out there.
- 0:31People think their only option is a full gut
- 0:34renovation, and that's just not true. I've worked
- 0:37with our design team across Virginia, Maryland,
- 0:40Texas, Florida, and we've got 16 proven methods
- 0:44to modernize oak cabinets. Most of them you can
- 0:47do without a contractor. Some you can literally
- 0:50do this weekend. All right, let's start with
- 0:52the quick wins then. What's the absolute easiest
- 0:54thing someone can do? Swap your hardware. Seriously,
- 0:58it's the single easiest upgrade. Remove those
- 1:01old brass or builder -grade knobs and replace
- 1:03them with modern bar pulls or minimal knobs.
- 1:07Matte black is the most popular finish right
- 1:09now. It creates beautiful contrast against light
- 1:12oak. But here's a tip most people miss. If your
- 1:15oak has warm honey tones, brushed brass or champagne
- 1:18bronze actually works with the warmth instead
- 1:21of fighting it. We're talking a hundred to five
- 1:24hundred dollars for the whole kitchen. One afternoon
- 1:27of work. So cheap for such a big impact. What
- 1:30about wall paint? Everyone always asks about
- 1:33what color to paint their walls when they have
- 1:34oak cabinets. Oh, this is huge. It's all about
- 1:37color theory. Cool -toned blues and greens naturally
- 1:41counterbalance oak's orange undertones because
- 1:43they sit opposite on the color wheel. Our design
- 1:46team recommends Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist, Sherwin
- 1:49-Williams Sea Salt, or for something bolder,
- 1:52Benjamin Moore Hail Navy. And here's the big
- 1:55one. Avoid pure bright white. It actually makes
- 1:59Honey Oak look more orange, not less. Also, upgrade
- 2:03your lighting while you're at it. Swap out those
- 2:06old fluorescent fixtures, add under cabinet LED
- 2:09strips, and switch to neutral 4 ,000 to 5 ,000
- 2:12Kelvin bulbs. That alone makes Honey Oak look
- 2:15less orange. Okay, so those are the weekend projects.
- 2:18Now let's talk mid -range upgrades. What if someone
- 2:21loves real wood but hates that golden yellow
- 2:23cast? Refinishing with a modern stain is a total
- 2:26game changer. Grey wash and driftwood tones are
- 2:30extremely popular right now. They neutralize
- 2:33the orange and give your oak this beautiful Scandinavian
- 2:35vibe. Dark espresso stains create drama and sophistication.
- 2:41And Chris, I have to mention this viral hack.
- 2:44Briwax Tudor Brown. You rub it right over the
- 2:47existing finish, no sanding needed, and it gives
- 2:50the oak a richer, warmer tone for under $30.
- 2:53It's not a total color change, but it's surprisingly
- 2:56effective. People go crazy for it online. $30,
- 2:59that is insane. Okay, what about countertops
- 3:03and backsplash? Because if you have oak cabinets
- 3:05and laminate counters, that feels like a double
- 3:08hit of 90s energy. Exactly. White quartz with
- 3:12subtle veining is the number one pairing right
- 3:14now. Cambria, Caesar Stone, Silestone, all great
- 3:19options. For a budget -friendly alternative,
- 3:22marble -look laminate from Formica has come a
- 3:25really long way. And for an industrial look,
- 3:28concrete -style surfaces or honed soapstone are
- 3:31absolutely beautiful with oak. For the backsplash,
- 3:35subway tile with dark grout is timeless. But
- 3:38in 2026, we're seeing a lot of zellage tiles.
- 3:42Those handmade, slightly irregular tiles that
- 3:44add so much depth and texture. Just one pro -tip.
- 3:49Avoid bright white tile directly against golden
- 3:51oak. Cream or warm gray tiles create a much softer
- 3:55transition. Now let's get into the bigger structural
- 3:58moves. Jess, you always say there is one thing
- 4:01that dates a kitchen more than the oak itself.
- 4:03What is it? The door profile. This is the tip
- 4:06most articles miss. If your oak cabinets have
- 4:09raised panel or cathedral arch door profiles,
- 4:12that is what is really dating your kitchen. Not
- 4:15the oak itself. Even with perfect paint and hardware,
- 4:18a cathedral door still screams 1992. The fix
- 4:22is simple. Replace the doors, not the entire
- 4:25cabinet. Your oak cabinet boxes are probably
- 4:29built like tanks. Keep them. Just swap the doors
- 4:33to slab or slim shaker profiles. Slab doors are
- 4:37flat panels, ultra minimalist, perfect for a
- 4:40modern aesthetic. Slim shaker is a 2026 refinement
- 4:44with ultra thin rails that look refined and light.
- 4:48You are looking at $500 to $4 ,000 for doors
- 4:51only. A fraction of full cabinet replacement.
- 4:54What about painting the cabinets? I know that
- 4:56is a controversial topic. Some people think painting
- 4:59solid oak is basically a crime. Ha! Both sides
- 5:03are valid, honestly. If you do paint, use a shellac
- 5:07-based primer like Zinsser Bin. Oak has tannins
- 5:10that will bleed through regular primers and cause
- 5:12yellow staining. Spray application gives the
- 5:15smoothest result. And the two -tone option is
- 5:18huge right now. Paint your uppers white or sage
- 5:21green. Keep the oak on the lowers. Best of both
- 5:25worlds. But here is the thing, Chris, and I really
- 5:28want people to hear this. Honey oak is not the
- 5:32enemy. There is a movement called warm minimalism
- 5:35that specifically celebrates the natural glow
- 5:37of honeyed wood. Pair it with organic textures
- 5:40like rattan lights, linen curtains, brushed metals.
- 5:44Use earthy tones like terracotta, olive, and
- 5:46mushroom. The result is elevated, lived in, and
- 5:50intentional, not dated. I love that perspective.
- 5:54Okay, Jess, let's give people the quick budget
- 5:55picture so they know what they are looking at.
- 5:58Sure. A hardware -only swap runs about $100 to
- 6:02$500. A mid -range refresh with hardware plus
- 6:06backsplash plus paint or stain plus lighting
- 6:08runs $2 ,000 to $5 ,000. A comprehensive update
- 6:11including countertops and new door profiles,
- 6:14$8 ,000 to $15 ,000. And that is still way less
- 6:18than full cabinet replacement, which runs 15
- 6:20to 35 ,000. Your oak boxes are solid wood. They
- 6:25have got another 20 years in them. Do not throw
- 6:27that away. So there you have it, folks. 16 expert
- 6:31methods to modernize oak kitchen cabinets. Jess,
- 6:34if you had to boil it down to three key principles,
- 6:37what would they be? Easy. Number one, contrast
- 6:40is your friend. Number two, the door profile
- 6:43matters as much as the color. And number three,
- 6:47less is more when it comes to styling. You do
- 6:50not have to do all 16 things. Pick three or four
- 6:53that fit your budget and you will be amazed at
- 6:55the transformation. Love it. And if you want
