- 0:00Coco Moon: Hello, darling. Today I want to share a little secret
- 0:04with you. My aunt has become my entire personality. There was
- 0:13probably a time in my life when I had hobbies, interests, things
- 0:17to talk about, and then I got four babies. Now my human kids
- 0:23ask me how I'm doing, and somehow within a minute, we're
- 0:28discussing manna's poop situation, and I don't mean
- 0:32casually. Uh-uh. We analyze its shape, color, consistency,
- 0:37frequency, and perhaps the most ridiculous part: her poop
- 0:42affects my emotional being. Perfect poop. Oh, that is a
- 0:48beautiful poo poo. Today's going to be a great day. Slightly
- 0:53questionable poop. What's wrong? What does she eat? How does her
- 0:59tummy feel? Is she acting normal? I'm canceling
- 1:04everything. We have a situation. Mammy must monitor Mana for the
- 1:08next 24 hours. And you know what's really funny? I don't
- 1:14even think this is weird anymore. That's the problem
- 1:19because Poo is only the beginning. There are things I do
- 1:24every single day that would be absolutely disgusting if Mana
- 1:31wasn't my baby. I pick her eye boogers with my bare fingers. I
- 1:36wipe her nose with my hand. It's practically a daily ritual for
- 1:41me to smell her breath, her ears, and yes, sometimes her
- 1:46butt. Very close-up butt inspection is occasionally
- 1:51necessary and important. I'm her mommy. I have responsibilities,
- 2:00and then she'll spend who knows how long licking herself. Walk
- 2:05right over to me and lick me directly on the face. And what
- 2:11do I do? Do I think about where that tongue has just been? Of
- 2:15course not. I go, oh, thank you for the kisses, baby. This is
- 2:23who I am now, right, Mana? And darling, we haven't even gotten
- 2:29to the pause. The pause. Please tell me I am not the only person
- 2:36who smells for baby's paws because sometimes they smell
- 2:41like popcorn, and Haru Haru's paws actually smell like
- 2:47pineapple. I don't know why. I don't need to know why. I just
- 2:52know that they do, and I deliberately sniff them. Mana
- 2:58will be sleeping next to me. I'll bury my face in her soft
- 3:03tummy, and I'll pick up one of her little paws. Hmm. I know.
- 3:11I'm aware. That sounds weird when I say out loud. I do it to
- 3:16Sora too, and then I squish their little paws a little bit,
- 3:21touch each of their paw pads, give them little massages, and
- 3:26then I tell myself, "This is so good for them, the massage. But
- 3:33the truth is, it's really for me. There's something about
- 3:39holding those little paws that comforts me, it makes me happy.
- 3:45It's my happy place. So apparently, I'm a paw sniffer,
- 3:50and I'm not even ashamed. Actually, when it comes to my
- 3:55fur babies, I am absolutely a drama queen. People have said to
- 4:02me, "I would never spend that much money on the dog, and I'm
- 4:10like, "Then, don't! I'm not asking you to. We used to live
- 4:20up in the mountains, and Manna loves the snow. She would stay
- 4:25outside and play in it forever if I let her. So of course she
- 4:30had snow suits, not just one, and some of those snowsuits cost
- 4:35about as much as a high-end ski jackets for human. Was that
- 4:42ridiculous? Maybe, but she could play in the snow without
- 4:47freezing. She was so happy, and she looked fabulous. So
- 4:55everybody won, and in the summer time when we went. Mana always
- 5:01wore her coyote jacket. That thing cost about as much as a
- 5:07bulletproof jacket, but she's tiny. We lived where there were
- 5:13coyotes, and in my mind, there was absolutely no way I was
- 5:19going to let a coyote snatch my baby, not on my watch. Then
- 5:26there is her food. Manny's food probably costs more than mine
- 5:31every month. I research ingredients. I craft her
- 5:35recipes. I cook for her as though her life depends on it,
- 5:40because according to me, it absolutely does. Amana isn't
- 5:47even the only one benefiting from this situation. Hoku, Sora,
- 5:53and Haru-they have their own bedroom, a whole room. Emily
- 6:00says, "It's the cutest room in my house. I even made them a
- 6:06little opening in the door. It has cat ears on one side and
- 6:10tail on the other, and they left their room. Meanwhile, my adult
- 6:16human kids no longer have beach rooms in my house, but cats do.
- 6:23Sorry. And you know what?
- 6:25I used to feel like I had to explain some of these choices:
- 6:30why I spend what I spent, why I cook the way I cook, why I
- 6:36organize parts of my life around these little beings. Now, I
- 6:43really don't, because when it comes to my fur babies, I know
- 6:49what matters to me and to them. Although it took me a while to
- 6:55get there, and one of the things I used to worry about: dog
- 7:02friends. Does Mana need dog friends? Should she be playing
- 7:08with other dogs? Am I socializing her enough? Is she
- 7:14fitting in? Am I being socially correct with other dog mums? The
- 7:21funny thing is, if Manna was sitting in the rescue waiting to
- 7:25be adopted, I am pretty sure one of the recommendations at the
- 7:30top of her profile would be, "Would do best as the only dog
- 7:36in the household. That's Manna. She loves people and her cat
- 7:43brothers, dogs. She can take them or leave them. Mostly,
- 7:52leave them, like 98.7% of the time. But when she was younger,
- 8:00I didn't trust my intuition when it came to her. I thought there
- 8:06was something I was supposed to be doing differently. One of the
- 8:11first trainers I worked with really emphasized that Manna was
- 8:15behind on certain skills and needed more socialization. She
- 8:21needed to learn from the pack. I was her leader and her boss, so
- 8:27Mana was put together with a lot of other dogs. They were all big
- 8:33dogs too, and I wasn't there with her. When she came home,
- 8:41she wasn't herself. She seemed so small, shut down, almost like
- 8:50she was afraid to take up any space, and I remember looking at
- 8:56her and thinking, "This just doesn't feel right, but I still
- 9:04had that little voice in my head. Maybe I'm being
- 9:09overprotective. Maybe this is what she needs as a dog. Maybe
- 9:18I'm the problem. Maybe a good dog mom would make sure her dog
- 9:25knows how to be social with other dogs. So over time, we
- 9:31worked with several different trainers, and eventually we met
- 9:37Trevor. I call him the manna whisperer, and one day Trevor
- 9:44asked me a very simple question. He said, "Do you need manna to
- 9:53be friends with other dogs? And I swear, something just clever.
- 10:01Because suddenly I realized, oh, this isn't about Manna. This is
- 10:08about me. I was feeling guilty because Manna didn't have dog
- 10:15friends. I was worried that she wasn't fitting in, and somewhere
- 10:21underneath all of that, I think I was reflecting some of my own
- 10:28insecurity about not fitting in. I was asking Mina to fit into
- 10:33this picture I had in my head of what a happy, well-adjusted dog
- 10:38was supposed to look like, and Manet was basically saying,
- 10:45"Mummy, I'm so happy being alone with you. So I looked at Trevor
- 10:51and said, "Absolutely not! I do not need Manna to have dog
- 10:57friends. And what a relief that was, not because Manna never
- 11:04needs to know how to safely exist around other dogs. Of
- 11:09course she does, but she doesn't need to become a social
- 11:14butterfly just so I can feel like I'm doing dog motherhood
- 11:19correctly. She gets to be Manna, and I get to know Mana well
- 11:27enough to make choices for the dog who is actually right in
- 11:32front of me, not some imaginary dog I think I'm supposed to
- 11:37have. And something happened after that. I started trusting
- 11:44myself more, not just as her caretaker, as her mummy. I
- 11:52stopped asking quite so often, "What does everybody else think
- 11:57I should be doing? And I started asking, "What does mana need?
- 12:06Actually, something happened just the other day that made me
- 12:09realize how much I've changed. My neighbor has a mouth to prove
- 12:14too, and she asked me if I wanted to start walking together
- 12:19every day, make it a little dog mom's thing, and it was very
- 12:25sweet. But I said thank you, but no, thank you. And it wasn't
- 12:33personal at all. I see her walking her dog all the time,
- 12:37usually chatting with another person while they walk, and
- 12:41there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. For her, the
- 12:45walk may also be time to connect with a friend.
- 12:49That's lovely, but my walks with Manna-that's our time, which is
- 12:58ridiculous because I'm with her basically all the time, but
- 13:03apparently 23 and a half hours together is not enough. We still
- 13:08require quality time. But when Manna and I walk, I leave my
- 13:14phone at home. I talk to her. Yes, I talk to my dog, and yes,
- 13:21she understands me, right, manamana? Oh, Hatcher came to
- 13:27visit. Hi, Hatcher. And when she stops, I stop. When she wants to
- 13:34sniff something, I wait. Sometimes I'm curious about what
- 13:39she's smelling. I watch her, not let her explore, because I
- 13:46realize something. I'm not taking Manna out so I can get my
- 13:51walk in. I'm taking a walk with her, and those are two very
- 13:59different things. I don't need our walk to look like anybody
- 14:03else's walk. I don't need mana to have anybody else's social
- 14:09life, and I don't need our relationship to make sense to
- 14:15everybody else. We know what works for us, and these days,
- 14:22that's enough. And maybe that's really what changed. I stopped
- 14:30needing our relationship to look normal to somebody else, because
- 14:36trust me, I know how we look. I take Mana everywhere. I talk to
- 14:43her all day. I plan around her. I cook for her. I check her poo
- 14:49poo. I smell her feet. Apparently, we require private
- 14:54quality time, even though we are together 23 and a half hours a
- 14:59day. I know, and sometimes people use words like "too
- 15:06attached. Maybe we are. Who cares? I mean, seriously, who
- 15:14decide how attached I'm allowed to be to the little being I
- 15:19adore So much, Mana is not just a dog to me. She never has been.
- 15:27She is the love of my life. She is my heart, and I'm absolutely
- 15:34delighted that we are this bonded. I know her, inside and
- 15:39out. I know when something feels different. I know the look on
- 15:45her face when she wants something. I know her sounds,
- 15:51her moods, her routines, her smile, and I know when she needs
- 15:58mummy, which is all the time, and she knows me too. She knows
- 16:05when I'm happy. She knows when I'm stressed. She knows when I'm
- 16:10sad. Sometimes I think she knows what I'm feeling before I do. If
- 16:18something isn't right with Manna, of course I feel it, and
- 16:24when something isn't right with me, she feels it too. That's us,
- 16:31that's our relationship, that's our normal, and our normal
- 16:37doesn't have to be everybody else's normal. Actually, please
- 16:42don't make it. Everybody else is normal. That we'll all be
- 16:46standing outside smelling our dogs' feet. Yeah, right, Mana.
- 16:51Oh, that could be kind of fun. No, never mind. Mana says she
- 17:00doesn't want dog friends? See, I've learned, Manna. Mummy
- 17:08learned, but there was something else I've learned too. For a
- 17:14long time, I thought loving Manna this much meant I needed
- 17:20to make sure I was doing everything right, the right
- 17:25training, the right socialization, the right food,
- 17:30the right choices, and somehow, somewhere along the way, I
- 17:36stopped trying so hard to beat the right kind of dogma, and I
- 17:41just became Manna's mommy. Perfectly imperfect, definitely
- 17:49not normal, probably a little ridiculous, but Manna loves her
- 17:57mommy, her wonderfully weird mom. I know her. I listen to
- 18:03her. I pay attention. I make mistakes. I learn, and I adore
- 18:11her with all my heart and soul, exactly the way I know how.
- 18:16Maybe that's why I don't feel embarrassed anymore about the
- 18:21ridiculous things I do, because when I look at the woman I
- 18:26become with Manna, she is crazy. But whatever, I really like her,
- 18:37because this woman, she loves without trying to be a cool
- 18:42dogma. She nurtures. She notices. She pays attention.
- 18:49She's curious. She stops when mana stops. She wants to know
- 18:56what manna is sniffing. She cooks. She protects. She worries
- 19:02sometimes way too much. She gets things wrong, changes her mind,
- 19:11learns, trusts herself a little more than she used to, and she
- 19:17gets ridiculously excited about somebody else's bow movement,
- 19:22and you know what? I think my fur babies have given me
- 19:26permission to soften, to play more, to care deeply without
- 19:34worrying so much about how it looks from the outside. Maybe
- 19:40even to be a little weird, okay, a lot weird, and I'm good with
- 19:48that. And maybe that's one of the unexpected gifts of loving
- 19:54them.
- 19:55They don't need us to be cool. They don't need us. To impress
- 20:01anybody, they don't care whether somebody thinks the snowsuit
- 20:06costs way too much, or whether the cats should really have
- 20:11their own bedroom, or whether Mummy smells their feet.
- 20:16Actually, they may have some concerns about that last one,
- 20:21but they let us love them, adore them completely, and somehow, in
- 20:31loving them that freely, maybe we learn to give ourselves a
- 20:36little more freedom too-freedom to love the way we live, freedom
- 20:44to build a life that feels right to us, freedom to trust what we
- 20:51know in our heart, freedom to stop explaining every little
- 20:58choice, and maybe freedom to like ourselves a little more,
- 21:05not because we're doing everything perfectly, not
- 21:09because everybody understands us, but because this life we
- 21:15built with them, this relationship, this love, feels
- 21:22like ours, and I think there's something really beautiful about
- 21:28that. Now I think it's time to ask of our babies what they
- 21:35would like us to know this week. Hopefully, it's not about poop.
- 21:41Okay, this week's card from my love messages from your pet
- 21:46oracle is, I trained you well. You absolutely did, Mana. I
- 21:54mean, I analyze your poo poo and peepee. I cook your meals. I buy
- 21:58your snowsuits. I stop when you stop. I wait while you sniff. I
- 22:02smell your paws and belly. You have done an excellent job, mana
- 22:08mana. And maybe that's exactly what mana would say. Pay
- 22:17attention to me, mummy. Listen to me. Trust what you know about
- 22:24me. Stop comparing me. Let me be who I am. And while you're at
- 22:36it, mummy, let yourself be who you are too. Okay, Menna, I've
- 22:42been trained. Well, my darling, I told you my secrets today, so
- 22:50now I want to hear yours. Tell me the ridiculous, the weird,
- 22:58and yes, the absolutely disgusting things you do because
- 23:02you adore your fur baby. What's that one thing you do that would
- 23:08make absolutely no sense to anyone else, but makes perfect
- 23:13sense to the two of you? I love to hear what you and your fur
- 23:19baby discovered together this week. Until then, take gentle
- 23:24care of yourself and your precious one, because your
- 23:28happiness matters.
