- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy, and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone, and thank you guys so
- 0:20much for all the love on our return.
- 0:24I got so many DMS. We had so many comments on YouTube.
- 0:27You guys have been so sweet. I'm so excited to be back and I
- 0:32have a normal three stories for you guys today.
- 0:35So the first story of course is we need to talk about how Mr.
- 0:40Beast, Logan Paul and KSI have teamed up to launch a Lunchables
- 0:45competitor. So yesterday the three creators
- 0:48announced that they are launching a brand called
- 0:50Lunchly, which is a prepackaged school lunch for kids that
- 0:55brings together two of their existing products, Mr. Beast's
- 0:58Feastables and Logan Paul and KSI's Prime Energy Drink.
- 1:03These two products will be packaged together with either
- 1:06Fiesta Nachos, the Pizza or Turkey Stack EMS. So quartz.com
- 1:13writes quote the Lunch Lee kits, available on the company's
- 1:16official website, contain Prime Drinks and Feastable bars in
- 1:20addition to a choice of Pizza, Turkey Stack EMS or Fiesta
- 1:23Nachos. The Lunch Lee website features a
- 1:25side by side comparison of the meal kits and their Lunchables
- 1:29equivalent. Lunchely boasts that their
- 1:31products provide more electrolytes, contain fewer
- 1:34calories and offer quote big gestures in comparison to their
- 1:40competitors Mid moments. I can't.
- 1:44So they are going on sale apparently at select grocery
- 1:48stores or like retailers at the end of this week in the USI
- 1:52don't know about anywhere else, like internationally.
- 1:56But I think that this is really interesting because this is them
- 2:01admitting that their audience is children, that all of their
- 2:05audiences actually are children, not even teenagers, like legit
- 2:09children, right? And none of them really own that
- 2:12fact. And I think that's partly
- 2:14because if they did, if they spoke publicly about how their
- 2:18audience is very young. And when I say young, like I
- 2:21like I said, like not teenagers. Like, there's no teenagers
- 2:24bringing Lunchables to high school for lunch, right?
- 2:27So if they're launching a Lunchables competitor, this is
- 2:31like a prepackaged lunch. This is for kids under 13 years
- 2:35old, presumably, like this is for kids in grade school.
- 2:37So, you know, if they were to be very public about the fact that
- 2:42their audience is very, very young, then that would put a lot
- 2:46of heat on them for their problematic content, their
- 2:50problematic views, their problematic supporting of
- 2:54certain celebrities, creators, politicians.
- 2:56I think Mr. Beast out of all of them owns it like the most, I
- 3:02guess I would say, because Feastables is so obviously
- 3:05geared towards children. Like, it's a it's a candy bar.
- 3:08It's a chocolate bar brand. But that being said, I watched
- 3:13hours of Mr. Beast interviews and documentaries for that
- 3:17Mister Beast deep dive that we did at the beginning of the
- 3:19year. And not once did I hear him say
- 3:23in the content that I watched at least.
- 3:25And again, I watched every interview that I could find
- 3:27really online of Mr. Beast. Not once did I ever hear him say
- 3:32that his audience were children. And this just goes back to how I
- 3:36feel about Mr. Beast, which is, yeah, he's not really building
- 3:41culty community, right? Like, he is making shock value
- 3:46lowest common denominator content for children who are
- 3:51inevitably going to age out of that content, obviously.
- 3:54So I think that this is almost like a bad PR move for, I mean,
- 4:00all of them, but especially Mr. Beast.
- 4:01There's already so much heat on him.
- 4:03I know that there's so much drama going on with Amazon Prime
- 4:07show Amazon is that. Yeah, I think it's Amazon.
- 4:09And because of everything that's coming out, you know, there's a
- 4:12lot of questions about is Mr. Beast even going to really be
- 4:15able to attract that audience on a platform that's not YouTube.
- 4:19We know that Gen. Alpha, who is presumably largely
- 4:22their audience, like Mr. Beast's audience, they are probably,
- 4:25they probably don't have Amazon Prime subscriptions like their
- 4:28parents probably do, of course. But like they are iPad kids,
- 4:31they are addicted to YouTube. We know that that is like the
- 4:34number one platform for Gen. Alpha.
- 4:36So I think in a way, of course, it's like a good business move,
- 4:40I guess to launch Lunch leaves. But it's an interesting PR move
- 4:45because we know that Mister Beast is trying to move away
- 4:48from YouTube. He is trying to be taken
- 4:51seriously in entertainment in Hollywood.
- 4:55And this just further puts him in that box by telling, you
- 4:59know, the public, like my audience actually is children.
- 5:03So that's who you're going to be attracting if you work with me
- 5:06on a major television network or anything like that.
- 5:10That's how I feel about that. I'm also very confused about the
- 5:13regulations around selling an energy drink bundled in a kids
- 5:18lunch because like these like lunch Lee is so clearly marketed
- 5:23towards children. Like I said, there's no high
- 5:26school kids or like college kids taking prepackaged like
- 5:29Lunchables to school. You know, like that is a
- 5:33children's lunch. So this is very clearly being
- 5:36marketed towards children under 13.
- 5:38And I don't understand how they can get away with putting Prime
- 5:42in the Lunchables or in the lunch leaves or whatever.
- 5:44But I know there was already drama anyways.
- 5:47I think it was actually Australia that was warning, like
- 5:51I think it was us, I don't know, some governing body here was
- 5:54like warning parents against letting their children consume
- 5:58Prime because of the very, very high caffeine content.
- 6:02So I don't know, I guess we'll see.
- 6:05I guess it probably lunch. Lee will probably not be sold in
- 6:07Australia, is what I'm gathering.
- 6:10OK, the next story that I have is a very mainstream story, but
- 6:14I feel like it is important to cover.
- 6:17So Diddy has been arrested on sex trafficking and other
- 6:21charges. So rapper Diddy, whose real name
- 6:24is Sean Combs, was arrested on Monday on charges of sex
- 6:28trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in
- 6:31prostitution and accused of running a, quote, criminal
- 6:35enterprise that abused women over a period of years.
- 6:39Mark Agnefilo, a lawyer for Sean Combs, said, quote, he's going
- 6:43to plead not guilty. Obviously, he's going to fight
- 6:46this with all of his energy and all of his might.
- 6:49Last November, an investigation kicked off after singer Cassie
- 6:53filed a lawsuit quote alleging that Combs abused her, urged her
- 6:58to have sex with male workers while he filmed, and that he
- 7:01later raped her. Ventura So Cassie Ventura
- 7:04Ventura's case, settled one day after it was filed, set off a
- 7:08torrent of similar lawsuits from other accusers, several of whom
- 7:12also described brutal and disturbing details.
- 7:15Combs initially denied Ventura's allegations, but in May, CNN
- 7:18obtained and published a violent surveillance video showing Combs
- 7:21kicking, dragging, and throwing an object at Ventura, writes
- 7:25Fox. Diddy then took to Instagram to
- 7:28apologize once that video came out.
- 7:30First of all, it's just like justice for Cassie and all the
- 7:34other women that I've spoken out.
- 7:35But if you guys saw the video of Cassie and Diddy, it is so
- 7:39horrifying and I'm so happy I know she's actually spoken out.
- 7:43I literally just saw before I started recording, she spoke out
- 7:46and said like I was hoping for justice in this situation and I
- 7:50feel like I'm just hoping that she gets it.
- 7:53So I will definitely be following this case.
- 7:55I have seen a few people talk about how this is hopefully
- 7:58going to be like the Me Too moment for the music industry
- 8:03because I guess, I mean, I was a little bit too young to really
- 8:07follow Me Too that closely. But I guess it didn't touch
- 8:11music obviously as much as it did, just like general entry
- 8:15entertainment and film and television.
- 8:17And I have faith that if this does become like a Me Too esque
- 8:23movement for the music industry, that the public will take it
- 8:26more seriously and receive it better than we did with the me
- 8:30Too movement. I think the culture, especially
- 8:32online, like Internet culture has changed so much.
- 8:37But I do have faith that if something like this happened, if
- 8:42like a Me too ask movement happened for the music industry
- 8:45because Internet culture is at the forefront of culture now.
- 8:49And I do believe Internet culture is in a different place
- 8:54than, you know, it obviously used to be.
- 8:57I would hope that that's of benefit to the victims, the
- 9:01survivors, and that there would be like real change made here.
- 9:05So I'm going to follow it. I will keep you guys posted on
- 9:08any like major developments on this case.
- 9:10OK. The last story that I have for
- 9:12you guys is that parenting influencers Matt and Abby Howard
- 9:16have addressed allegations that they left their children alone
- 9:19on a cruise. So Matt and Abby are the family
- 9:22vloggers who go viral and make headlines all the time because
- 9:28of their controversial like marriage podcasts where they
- 9:32basically, I, I, I think people are like concerned about how it
- 9:36seems like Matt treats Abby or like handles their relationship.
- 9:40They are like a family vlogging couple, but they actually don't
- 9:45show their children, which is something that I really
- 9:47appreciate from them. So anyways, the story that Abby
- 9:51posted featured a photo of their baby monitors on a cruise and
- 9:54the text wrote. So we ended up taking them as in
- 9:57their children for five nights and it became apparent that they
- 10:00weren't enjoying it and therefore we weren't either.
- 10:03So then we switched our dinner time to after their bedtime and
- 10:07Facetimed the monitors while we ate.
- 10:10She said the baby monitors didn't work well on board the
- 10:12cruise, so Facetiming the baby monitors worked better.
- 10:16That like allowed them to basically be able to keep an eye
- 10:19on their kids. People went absolutely wild that
- 10:24they seemingly left their children alone in their rooms.
- 10:28So now Matt has responded in a video saying that there was
- 10:32someone with their children at all times and they were not left
- 10:35in these rooms on the cruise by themselves and.
- 10:37People started to speculate and believe that we had left our
- 10:41children alone in their staterooms and that is just
- 10:44completely untrue because we had someone with our children at all
- 10:47times on this boat. Period.
- 10:49I. Can see where my story did lead
- 10:51to misunderstanding, which is why I ended up deleting it
- 10:55several hours after posting it. It's because I could see that it
- 10:57was causing concern and misunderstanding.
- 10:59OK, so I'm obviously not a parent and I'd be interested to
- 11:03hear from parents what your opinion is on this.
- 11:07But I don't know if this is like an absolutely rogue or like
- 11:11inappropriate take. But I don't know if this is that
- 11:14scandalous. Like I have to question if the
- 11:19children sleeping in their rooms on a cruise ship where Matt and
- 11:23Abby are like, it's not like they're at a restaurant.
- 11:26You know, it's like the kids are at home and they're at a
- 11:28restaurant downtown or something.
- 11:30They're like on the same ship together.
- 11:32They're like, you know, a flight down, let's say, having dinner
- 11:35and they have the baby monitors there so they can actually keep
- 11:38an eye on them. Like, I don't see how that is so
- 11:40different from them being in their rooms at home and you,
- 11:44let's say, like being in the basement watching a movie
- 11:47together and having the baby monitor there.
- 11:49I don't know. I, I, I was really surprised to
- 11:52see the reaction to this. But again, I'm not a parent, so
- 11:56I don't know. And I also understand, like, I'm
- 12:00a 90s kid. My husband's an 80s kid, you
- 12:03know, our parents, I was left in the car with the windows rolled
- 12:07down while my parents like ran into shopping centers.
- 12:11I am sure that I was left sleeping somewhere, you know,
- 12:15and maybe my parents took the baby monitor.
- 12:17Maybe they didn't like, I don't know.
- 12:19And I understand there's always an element of, like, progress
- 12:22means, you know, you know better, you do better.
- 12:25So things change, obviously, for example, like, we used to never
- 12:27wear seatbelts, right? And now we know better, so now
- 12:30we do. So I understand that argument as
- 12:32well. Like, I'm not saying that if I
- 12:34had a child, I would leave it in a hotel room while I was
- 12:39downstairs for dinner at the hotel.
- 12:40OK, That's not what I'm saying, but I was really surprised by
- 12:45the reaction to this because I'm like, they're still there, you
- 12:48know, they're still I, they're just like a flight or two
- 12:52downstairs. They might even be on the same
- 12:54floor, like, I have no idea, right?
- 12:56But second of all, I was really shocked that Matt and Abby
- 13:00actually posted this because I do believe that like the family
- 13:04vlogging, like parenting corner of the Internet, it is obviously
- 13:08very judgmental. It's very heated.
- 13:10People have a lot of opinions about parenting and I feel like
- 13:13posting anything about parenting online would be terrifying.
- 13:16So I'm really surprised that they posted this because I'm
- 13:20sure that they could have anticipated that some that a
- 13:22reaction similar to this would have happened.
- 13:25So that leads me to think that maybe they posted this
- 13:27intentionally. And I know that's a bit like
- 13:29conspiracy vibes, but there is a lot of questions around if they
- 13:38post their controversial marriage podcast clips and
- 13:41stuff, if they post those to get press mentions.
- 13:44Because anytime they post anything like that and it goes
- 13:46viral, it always gets written up in like People magazine, Us
- 13:50Weekly. Obviously, their names do well
- 13:52and their takes are controversial enough that
- 13:55journalists feel, you know, it's worthy of a story.
- 13:58So I don't know. I feel like it's possible.
- 14:02They are very online. Obviously, their whole job is
- 14:04the Internet. They would know to an extent
- 14:07that this reaction was going to happen.
- 14:10I have to wonder if they posted that intentionally to get press,
- 14:15not just engagement, but like press.
- 14:17I feel like that is what they're chasing.
- 14:19Because that's like legitimacy, right?
- 14:20Like getting a full story written up in People magazine.
- 14:25If you're trying to be Internet famous and boost your followers,
- 14:29your engagement, your legitimacy, like what's better?
- 14:31I don't know, I feel like I have my tinfoil hat on right now, but
- 14:37I just that's the inkling that I have.
- 14:40Anyways, guys, that's it for today.
- 14:42Thank you so much for listening to Mini Scroll.
- 14:45Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 14:47I love you guys and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 14:50Bye.
