- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken. It's your dose of the
- 0:07Speaker 1: hottest influencer and pop culture news twice a week. I'm
- 0:10Speaker 1: Sophie Torber and coming up on today's show, Indy Clinton's
- 0:14Speaker 1: reluctant plastic surgery update, Sky Wheatley's chicken burger debacle, Lily
- 0:20Speaker 1: Brown and Jet Kenny address that viral pregnancy story, and
- 0:24Speaker 1: why TikTok are convinced that Alex Cooper and Alex Earle
- 0:27Speaker 1: are feuding. But first, our hometown of Adelaide was the
- 0:31Speaker 1: hotspot for high-profile influencers this weekend, Kate. Oh, I kept
- 0:35Speaker 1: seeing every influencer putting up posts like, oh, has anyone
- 0:38Speaker 1: got a good makeup artist in Adelaide and packing for Adelaide?
- 0:41Speaker 1: And I'm like, what's going on? Yeah, I didn't realise
- 0:44Speaker 1: that Live Golf would get such a top level of influencers.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I was very impressed with the PR team that was
- 0:49Speaker 1: working with them. It made Adelaide look cool. They had
- 0:53Speaker 1: this incredible luxury house called the Ripper House, which is
- 0:56Speaker 1: where all of the VIPs were rubbing shoulders The AFR
- 1:00Speaker 1: put out an article saying that, oh, the likes of
- 1:03Speaker 1: Chris Hemsworth and Serena Williams would be there. Now, they
- 1:06Speaker 1: didn't make it, but I was very excited to see
- 1:08Speaker 1: people like Indy Clinton, Sofa Dofa. Lucy and Nikki ended
- 1:12Speaker 1: up making it. They did miss their flight, but they
- 1:15Speaker 1: managed to get over here. Yeah, I bet the organizers
- 1:17Speaker 1: freaked out when they saw that Instagram update. Bet Judd
- 1:20Speaker 1: was also there alongside Karl Stefanovic. It looked like that
- 1:23Speaker 1: Ripper house went off. So the house is in Madindi.
- 1:26Speaker 1: It's absolutely insane. I would have loved to be a
- 1:28Speaker 1: fly on the wall at Ripper house and seen the
- 1:30Speaker 1: interaction between the large-scale Aussie influences and some of Adelaide's
- 1:35Speaker 1: lower echelon of influence. It would have been really interesting.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I wonder if some of the lower influencers were hassling
- 1:42Speaker 1: the top ones for photos or wanting to befriend them
- 1:45Speaker 1: so that they got more engagement. I actually have heard
- 1:47Speaker 1: influencers talk about how they've stumbled across house parties in
- 1:51Speaker 1: the US when they're on holidays. And rather than people
- 1:54Speaker 1: introducing themselves, it's all about like, well, how many followers
- 1:57Speaker 1: do you have? And if you don't have enough, then
- 1:59Speaker 1: you don't get talked to. I'm absolutely spewing because I
- 2:01Speaker 1: used to rent a place that was right across the
- 2:03Speaker 1: road from the Grange Golf Course. I could have done
- 2:05Speaker 1: the best people watching. It was absolutely chaos though when
- 2:09Speaker 1: the event was on last year. All of the streets
- 2:11Speaker 1: were closed and a lot of the houses around us
- 2:13Speaker 1: were being rented out for astronomical amounts of money. Like
- 2:16Speaker 1: it was insane. I just love that there was finally
- 2:19Speaker 1: a high profile influencer adjacent event and it wasn't a debacle.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Like if you think back to- What was it?
- 2:25Speaker 1: Sam Smith.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Oh, that was just so embarrassing for Adelaide.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Yeah, because I actually feel like this made Adelaide look
- 2:31Speaker 1: like a really cool, desirable place to go. And it
- 2:35Speaker 1: was recently announced that Live Golf is actually going to
- 2:37Speaker 1: now be moving to North Adelaide. So in the city,
- 2:40Speaker 1: which I think is a really great move because that's
- 2:42Speaker 1: going to get so many more interstate tourists and interstate
- 2:45Speaker 1: tourists discovering the city of Adelaide, which I think has
- 2:48Speaker 1: really changed so much over the past couple of years
- 2:51Speaker 1: and is such an exciting place to go to.
- 2:54Speaker 3: I built this platform of being relatable and being honest
- 2:57Speaker 3: and showing you my real life.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Indie Clinton has reluctantly opened up about her impending plastic
- 3:04Speaker 1: surgery next month. The popular TikToker revealed she's getting rhinoplasty
- 3:09Speaker 1: to resolve an injury she got while surfing five years ago.
- 3:12Speaker 1: This video was really unlike anything I've seen before from
- 3:15Speaker 1: an influencer on the topic. Yeah, normally influencers act as
- 3:18Speaker 1: though they're really excited to share the news and they
- 3:20Speaker 1: tell their followers that they're taking them along the journey
- 3:23Speaker 1: with them. But Indy was the total opposite and it
- 3:26Speaker 1: was really clear just how nervous she was to share
- 3:29Speaker 1: this news. Indy started off by saying it had been
- 3:32Speaker 1: eating away at her and at one point she was
- 3:34Speaker 1: even shaking because she just doesn't want to deal with
- 3:37Speaker 1: the impending judgment from her followers. Why do you think
- 3:40Speaker 1: she's been so reluctant to share about the surgery? It's
- 3:42Speaker 1: because she doesn't want to promote plastic surgery to her followers.
- 3:46Speaker 1: So this is what she said on the matter.
- 3:49Speaker 3: I'm in a really hard position by I don't want
- 3:52Speaker 3: to talk about this. I would rather just do this
- 3:54Speaker 3: and hide it because I don't want to promote this
- 3:57Speaker 3: and I don't want to sound like I'm promoting this
- 3:58Speaker 3: because I'm doing this for myself. I'm in a position
- 4:01Speaker 3: where I have millions and millions of followers. So I'm
- 4:04Speaker 3: not trying to lie and hide something, but I'm not
- 4:06Speaker 3: trying to talk about it to monetize and promote, if
- 4:09Speaker 3: you know what I mean.
- 4:11Speaker 1: It was really interesting to hear the thought process Indy
- 4:14Speaker 1: went through to make the decision to share this news
- 4:16Speaker 1: with her audience. She was just so honest and she
- 4:18Speaker 1: even said that she had considered pre-recording content to hide
- 4:22Speaker 1: the fact she was having surgery, but she decided against
- 4:25Speaker 1: that because she didn't want to lie and she said
- 4:27Speaker 1: it went against what her channel was actually built on. Well,
- 4:29Speaker 1: with Indy, her whole channel is about being relatable, even
- 4:33Speaker 1: though she is this incredibly attractive, fit, young mum who
- 4:38Speaker 1: lives in this gorgeous house right on the waterfront. And
- 4:42Speaker 1: Indy has this way of making you feel like she's
- 4:44Speaker 1: one of you and she's chaotic and she's messy and
- 4:46Speaker 1: she's got kids bomber on all of her clothes. So
- 4:49Speaker 1: I totally understand her not wanting to share about something
- 4:53Speaker 1: that perhaps a lot of moms who follow her couldn't
- 4:55Speaker 1: afford or maybe it's not top of their priority list.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I also really like the fact that she said she
- 5:00Speaker 1: doesn't want to appear to be promoting plastic surgery because
- 5:04Speaker 1: I know there's always a bit of a debate about it,
- 5:06Speaker 1: whether people should just be honest and transparent. or whether
- 5:09Speaker 1: that transparency is promoting more young people to think that
- 5:12Speaker 1: it's normal and everyone should be going and getting plastic surgery.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I mean, at the end of the day, it's an
- 5:17Speaker 1: individual choice, but it is good that she's thinking about
- 5:20Speaker 1: the impact that she does have on her audience. And
- 5:22Speaker 1: it's actually not the first time she has undergone plastic
- 5:25Speaker 1: surgery since having such a large following. So Last year,
- 5:28Speaker 1: Indie announced that she was taking time off social media
- 5:31Speaker 1: for a well-deserved break. And Indie eventually opened up that
- 5:34Speaker 1: she had gotten a breast augmentation during her time offline,
- 5:37Speaker 1: but didn't want to be seen to be promoting it.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And it seems like she has learned from that experience
- 5:42Speaker 1: and is now wanting to be upfront with her followers
- 5:44Speaker 1: this time around. Yeah, because I think a lot of
- 5:46Speaker 1: people like this gotcha moment where they're like, oh my God,
- 5:50Speaker 1: like it creates even more of a buzz. where you've
- 5:52Speaker 1: got the before and after photos.
- 5:53Speaker 2: People trying to see clues. Like actually, I think from
- 5:56Speaker 2: that angle, she looks different.
- 5:57Speaker 1: After there being so much speculation around her breast implants,
- 6:00Speaker 1: she probably thought it was important for her to sit
- 6:02Speaker 1: down with her audience and explain why she's getting a
- 6:05Speaker 1: nose job. Because I mean, as she said, she's had
- 6:07Speaker 1: this surfing accident. She pointed out what she wasn't happy with.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Not that she owes anyone an explanation. Well, that actually
- 6:14Speaker 1: made me feel really sorry for her because it did
- 6:16Speaker 1: seem like she was trying to justify her decision to
- 6:18Speaker 1: her audience. Because She really did go in depth. She
- 6:21Speaker 1: even showed a photo of her nose after the accident happened.
- 6:24Speaker 1: And it's really no one's business. But again, as she said,
- 6:27Speaker 1: it's a little bit hard to hide her face online.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Some people get so up in arms about influencers or
- 6:33Speaker 1: celebrities undergoing all this plastic surgery. But most of the time,
- 6:37Speaker 1: the people who are up in arms are those who
- 6:39Speaker 1: have trolled the influencers over their appearance and said, why
- 6:42Speaker 1: don't you do this? Or they should do this. And
- 6:44Speaker 1: then when they actually go and do something about it,
- 6:46Speaker 1: they also have a problem with it. Yeah, they're like, oh,
- 6:47Speaker 1: that's so disappointing that you would go and do that
- 6:49Speaker 1: even though I've trolled you all about it. Now, it
- 6:52Speaker 1: will be very interesting to see if Indy shares the
- 6:54Speaker 1: recovery process because she said that she wasn't sure if
- 6:56Speaker 1: she was going to because, again, she doesn't want to
- 6:59Speaker 1: be seen to be monetizing the content.
- 7:01Speaker 2: But then again, her whole life is sharing her life
- 7:03Speaker 2: and her reality.
- 7:04Speaker 1: It's clear that she has agonized over whether to put
- 7:06Speaker 1: this video out or not because her husband, Ben, wrote underneath,
- 7:10Speaker 1: well said, baby, so proud of you. And Indy replied saying,
- 7:13Speaker 1: I was waiting on your text back if I should post.
- 7:16Speaker 1: A weight lifted off my shoulders, you know. I really
- 7:18Speaker 1: liked seeing this interaction because it really humanized the whole situation.
- 7:21Speaker 1: And I think that's how Indy remains relatable because she
- 7:24Speaker 1: does really wear her heart on her sleeve. And while
- 7:26Speaker 1: her lifestyle may not be as relatable as it once was,
- 7:30Speaker 1: she really does show her insecurities and just tackles it
- 7:33Speaker 1: head first, which a lot of influencers don't do. Now,
- 7:36Speaker 1: at the time of the recording, the video has over
- 7:38Speaker 1: 1,000 comments and over 600,000 views. As expected, people were
- 7:43Speaker 1: weighing in and saying, I'm so disappointed in you. And
- 7:46Speaker 1: then there were a mix of people saying, oh, you know,
- 7:48Speaker 1: you don't even have to justify this to us.
- 7:52Speaker 4: I'm naming and shaming for the first time in my
- 7:54Speaker 4: life right now, because that is just, I feel really disrespected.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Sky Wheatley has teed off at a local fish and
- 8:02Speaker 1: chip shop after she received a chicken burger, which looked
- 8:05Speaker 1: nothing like the photo. In the seven-minute video, the Gold
- 8:09Speaker 1: Coast influencer complained about the store's appalling customer service and
- 8:12Speaker 1: said it's the first time she's been driven to name
- 8:15Speaker 1: and shame a small business. Soph, it was almost comical
- 8:19Speaker 1: how different the burger looked from the photo on the
- 8:21Speaker 1: Uber Eats app. Look, on this podcast, I know we're
- 8:23Speaker 1: not generally fans of influencers naming and shaming small businesses,
- 8:27Speaker 1: but I have never... seen anything quite like this in
- 8:30Speaker 1: my life. This burger looked absolutely rank.
- 8:32Speaker 2: What are you in year eight? I haven't heard the
- 8:34Speaker 2: word rank. What are you going to say? It's festy
- 8:36Speaker 2: as well?
- 8:36Speaker 1: Well, I'm bringing it back. So in the Uber Eats photo,
- 8:40Speaker 1: it showed a burger absolutely bursting with lettuce, tomato, it
- 8:44Speaker 1: had aioli and a very large juicy chicken breast coming
- 8:47Speaker 1: out of the bun. Yet the burger that arrived on
- 8:50Speaker 1: Sky Wheatley's doorstep was laughable. The pieces of chicken were
- 8:54Speaker 1: absolutely minuscule and inside the burger was a dirty great
- 8:57Speaker 1: big chunk of tomato that still had like the core
- 9:00Speaker 1: on it, you know, the green bit of the tomato.
- 9:02Speaker 1: It was disgusting. I think the end of the tomato
- 9:05Speaker 1: would have been passable if all the other elements hadn't
- 9:08Speaker 1: been so shit. Well, it was almost like there was
- 9:10Speaker 1: more tomato than anything else because the chicken was so small.
- 9:13Speaker 1: We will upload a photo on our Instagram stories just
- 9:15Speaker 1: to give it justice and so you can check it out. Now,
- 9:18Speaker 1: Skye shared a photo to her 658,000 followers yesterday showing
- 9:22Speaker 1: what she ordered versus what turned up and wrote, this
- 9:25Speaker 1: is what came out. I'm absolutely raging. Like, sorry, I'm
- 9:28Speaker 1: so happy I can't afford to eat. And I know
- 9:30Speaker 1: not everyone has the luxury of ordering takeout, but what
- 9:33Speaker 1: an absolute fucking piss take. To add insult to injury,
- 9:37Speaker 1: the burger costs $ 14. 30 and the meal in total for
- 9:40Speaker 1: the family of four was $ 80, which is hefty for.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Fish and chips, but everything is so damn expensive at
- 9:45Speaker 2: the moment.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Now Sky and her baby daddy were absolutely bewildered by
- 9:48Speaker 1: the presentation that they ended up ringing up the fish
- 9:50Speaker 1: and chip shop and asking for a refund. And this
- 9:54Speaker 1: is where they encountered what Sky said was appalling customer service.
- 9:58Speaker 4: So we call the fish and chip shop and we
- 10:02Speaker 4: let them know our feedback and whatever. And he hangs
- 10:07Speaker 4: up on us.
- 10:09Speaker 1: And turns the phone off.
- 10:11Speaker 4: You best believe I'm going to try to keep calling.
- 10:14Speaker 5: I want to get in touch with the owner.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Because Wait, sorry, let me post this again. I don't
- 10:22Speaker 4: even care if I'm being B-I-T-C-H-Y right now because, like,
- 10:28Speaker 4: I've never seen something like that ever in my life.
- 10:33Speaker 4: The fish was wet. I'm sure they just grabbed it
- 10:38Speaker 4: out of the fish tank and slapped it on. I
- 10:42Speaker 4: was so hungry babe I haven't eaten since lunch this
- 10:46Speaker 4: is not it's not the burger that's the problem and
- 10:49Speaker 4: the presentation and how disgustingly appalling the food was it's
- 10:54Speaker 4: the customer service that is actually enraging my soul like
- 11:01Speaker 4: to hang up on someone who's trying to give your
- 11:04Speaker 4: business feedback we weren't even being rude we just said
- 11:08Speaker 4: like hey Like I ate the fish. I'm not asking
- 11:12Speaker 4: for a refund on the stanky fishy fish, but the burger, I'm.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Like, I don't want to pay 15.
- 11:19Speaker 4: How is it 18?
- 11:22Speaker 1: How is that $ 80? I wish there was a recording
- 11:27Speaker 1: of this phone call because I feel like it would
- 11:30Speaker 1: have been so funny to listen to. I'm team Sky
- 11:33Speaker 1: here because I feel like it's absolutely disgusting to hang
- 11:36Speaker 1: up on a customer when they have a legitimate complaint
- 11:38Speaker 1: like this. The least the worker could have done is
- 11:41Speaker 1: actually apologise and offer some sort of refund for the
- 11:44Speaker 1: burger or the whole meal because it looked inedible. Why
- 11:47Speaker 1: am I having flashbacks to your story you shared on
- 11:50Speaker 1: Friday's podcast about you going through the HJ's drive-through and
- 11:53Speaker 1: someone complaining?
- 11:54Speaker 3: Well.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Maybe they had a complaint like this.
- 11:57Speaker 1: They took their complaint a little bit too far. They
- 11:59Speaker 1: got a bit loud. But I just can't believe that
- 12:02Speaker 1: a store would hang up on a customer like this
- 12:04Speaker 1: for a legitimate complaint because a lot of the time
- 12:07Speaker 1: people do ring up like yes, to have a bit
- 12:09Speaker 1: of a go, but also so that the business can
- 12:12Speaker 1: actually improve for next time. I mean, clearly they didn't
- 12:15Speaker 1: know who they were dealing with because if they had
- 12:16Speaker 1: known it was Sky Wheatley who has so many followers
- 12:19Speaker 1: and she can go rogue on her social media channels,
- 12:21Speaker 1: they would have absolutely sent her another burger rather than
- 12:24Speaker 1: now having their local business named and changed. I don't
- 12:27Speaker 1: necessarily think that influencers should be given preferential treatment and
- 12:30Speaker 1: people have to roll out the red carpet for them.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I think that all customers should be given the same
- 12:34Speaker 1: level of respect, but gee, this fish and chip shop
- 12:37Speaker 1: must be kicking themselves because they really could have avoided
- 12:40Speaker 1: all of this bad PR by just giving her a
- 12:42Speaker 1: refund and then re-delivering her a nicer meal. It's not
- 12:46Speaker 1: that difficult.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:47Speaker 2: It's really a missed opportunity.
- 12:49Speaker 1: I mean, Skye said several times that she is aware
- 12:51Speaker 1: that she's very privileged to be in a position.
- 12:53Speaker 2: To order takeaway and that it wasn't about the money.
- 12:56Speaker 1: It's just how she was treated by the staff. And
- 12:58Speaker 1: that's what happens when things escalate over the phone. They
- 13:01Speaker 1: clearly didn't realize who they were dealing with. I mean,
- 13:04Speaker 1: But in saying that, I mean, our dad, he recently
- 13:08Speaker 1: had a run in with a wine delivery company. And yes,
- 13:11Speaker 1: he doesn't have any followers on social media, but they
- 13:14Speaker 1: treated him so badly that he's told everyone he's met,
- 13:18Speaker 1: don't buy anything from these people. Like, You can't treat
- 13:21Speaker 1: people badly when they've purchased something from your business. Yeah,
- 13:24Speaker 1: even with regular everyday people, bad word of mouth spreads.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I do think that Sky handled this situation quite well
- 13:31Speaker 1: because it can be contentious when influencers name and shame
- 13:34Speaker 1: a business. And we've seen when that goes very badly
- 13:36Speaker 1: for influencers like Jade Tunchi. And I think she was
- 13:40Speaker 1: very aware that she didn't want to come across as
- 13:42Speaker 1: a brat or entitled. And she joked that she was
- 13:44Speaker 1: waiting for the Daily Mail to print a headline saying,
- 13:47Speaker 1: Sky Weekly cries over Uber Eats order. And I like
- 13:51Speaker 1: the way that she prefaced that growing up, she had
- 13:53Speaker 1: a few of these sorts of jobs working at Kohl's
- 13:55Speaker 1: and Easy DVD and McDonald's. And she said she was
- 13:58Speaker 1: told from the get-go that the customer was always right
- 14:01Speaker 1: and customer service was so important. Here's more of what
- 14:04Speaker 1: she said.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Anyway, I'm probably going to get hate for this, but
- 14:08Speaker 4: I don't care. If my business sent out a burger
- 14:14Speaker 4: that looked like that... I would be like, do you
- 14:19Speaker 4: want roses to your front door? What can I do
- 14:21Speaker 4: to help? Not hang up on someone.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Now, Skye isn't always known for handling these situations the best.
- 14:30Speaker 1: And that's why I want to give her props because
- 14:31Speaker 1: I thought it was quite clever that after her rant,
- 14:34Speaker 1: she then recommended a great fish and chip shop on
- 14:36Speaker 1: the Gold Coast for her followers to go to instead
- 14:39Speaker 1: and said how fantastic they were. and that she loves
- 14:41Speaker 1: supporting that small business. Yeah, I think that was a
- 14:43Speaker 1: good way to wrap it up. Now, we have chosen
- 14:46Speaker 1: not to name the store, but I did go have
- 14:48Speaker 1: a sneaky look at their reviews. And I think it's
- 14:50Speaker 1: important to point out the Sky's negative review isn't the
- 14:52Speaker 1: only one. So their reviews were littered with one stars
- 14:56Speaker 1: and many customers labeled it the worst fish and chips
- 14:58Speaker 1: they've ever had. Does this change things for you? Because
- 15:01Speaker 1: I am an absolute stickler looking at reviews whenever I
- 15:04Speaker 1: order anything, be it products or food. Well, when you've
- 15:07Speaker 1: got two hungry kids on a Thursday night and you
- 15:09Speaker 1: just want takeaway, you probably don't have all of the
- 15:11Speaker 1: time in the world to go through the reviews because
- 15:14Speaker 1: they can be pretty mixed. And it's pretty hard to
- 15:16Speaker 1: mess up a chicken burger. Like you'd think that's pretty
- 15:18Speaker 1: simple for them to get right. Come spend Valentine's Day
- 15:22Speaker 1: with me flying to New Zealand. OG influencer Lily Brown
- 15:27Speaker 1: and her Ironman boyfriend Jet Kenny have been forced to
- 15:30Speaker 1: address a viral pregnancy story that took on a life
- 15:33Speaker 1: of its own.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Soph, how did this all unfold?
- 15:35Speaker 1: Well, on Wednesday, Jet posted a photo dump from the
- 15:38Speaker 1: week and this year he has committed himself to doing
- 15:41Speaker 1: weekly photo dumps.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Such a big commitment.
- 15:44Speaker 1: It is. Now he captioned the post, week six dump,
- 15:48Speaker 1: And then put in brackets, swipe to last for a surprise.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Does anyone else hate it when influencers refer to it
- 15:54Speaker 1: so boldly as a dump? Yeah, it feels like it
- 15:57Speaker 1: assaults your senses in a bit, especially when they add
- 15:59Speaker 1: the poo emoji. I mean, you know, the technical term
- 16:02Speaker 1: is carousel, which you sound like a bit of a
- 16:04Speaker 1: wank if you like weekly carousel.
- 16:06Speaker 2: You could say weekly photo dump.
- 16:08Speaker 1: I mean, the caption's terrible anyway, but just I just
- 16:11Speaker 1: hate the word dump used in there. So you think
- 16:13Speaker 1: photo dump sounds better than just dump? Yes, I do.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Because dump makes me think of the toilet.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Well, this photo dump in question, it contained all the
- 16:21Speaker 1: normal sort of stuff. It had cute photos of the couple,
- 16:23Speaker 1: had Jet with his nephews and a couple of selfies
- 16:27Speaker 1: until it came to the last slide, which was a
- 16:29Speaker 1: very strange animated video showing a flying eagle dropping an egg.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Then out of the egg popped a photo of Lily Brown.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Like it was All very, very bizarre. Isn't this just
- 16:41Speaker 1: a typical boy thing? They don't really take social media
- 16:45Speaker 1: that seriously and they post like odd things that might
- 16:48Speaker 1: be an in-joke and then suddenly this just gets a
- 16:51Speaker 1: life of its own and the media pick up on it. Yeah, well,
- 16:53Speaker 1: because followers took this as being a pregnancy announcement and
- 16:57Speaker 1: they immediately started congratulating the couple. So one follower wrote,
- 17:01Speaker 1: congratulations to you both, amazing news, whilst another said, oh
- 17:05Speaker 1: my goodness, congratulations, such beautiful news. And this led to
- 17:09Speaker 1: a major media outlet jumping the gun and publishing an
- 17:13Speaker 1: article announcing the couple's exciting pregnancy news. How mortifying for
- 17:18Speaker 1: Lily Brown. She's someone that's grown up on social media.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Even if babies aren't on her agenda at the moment,
- 17:24Speaker 1: I think all of us have a way in the
- 17:26Speaker 1: back of our mind that we might think we want
- 17:28Speaker 1: to announce our engagement or our pregnancy.
- 17:30Speaker 2: And I'm sure her.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Animated as an egg was not the way that she.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Wanted to do it.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the thing. That's why I knew that it
- 17:37Speaker 1: was bullshit from the start. Knowing Lily Brown, she would never,
- 17:39Speaker 1: ever announce her pregnancy news this way. I'm sure there
- 17:42Speaker 1: would be a very curated photo shoot. I mean, they're
- 17:45Speaker 1: a very attractive couple. So to me, this clearly wasn't
- 17:48Speaker 1: a pregnancy announcement. And the reason that this seemed to
- 17:51Speaker 1: catch on so much is because there have been ongoing
- 17:54Speaker 1: pregnancy rumors about Lily Brown for several months now. And
- 17:58Speaker 1: I think it's because She previously spoke on her podcast
- 18:01Speaker 1: about how she and Jet really want to have kids
- 18:04Speaker 1: and they're close to their nieces and nephews. So now
- 18:06Speaker 1: it seems like any time Lily is at an event
- 18:09Speaker 1: like M. Davies Hens, it's like, oh, my gosh, she
- 18:11Speaker 1: doesn't have an alcoholic drink in her hand. Like people
- 18:14Speaker 1: are trying to piece together these little clues. I feel
- 18:17Speaker 1: for Lily Brown because it would be awful people speculating
- 18:20Speaker 1: all the time that you were pregnant, particularly because we
- 18:22Speaker 1: don't know what's going on behind the scenes.
- 18:24Speaker 2: This is even something that she wants. or that she's
- 18:26Speaker 2: trying for.
- 18:27Speaker 1: It's none of our business whatsoever. So it would be
- 18:30Speaker 1: really hard to come out and be like, hang on guys,
- 18:33Speaker 1: call your Jets. This is not actually true. And inadvertently,
- 18:36Speaker 1: it would put a lot of pressure on them as
- 18:37Speaker 1: a couple. Jet took to his Instagram story saying, I
- 18:40Speaker 1: didn't think I'd have to come onto Instagram at 6.15am
- 18:44Speaker 1: to address the fact that people think that we're pregnant.
- 18:46Speaker 1: From an eagle dropping an egg out of its bum
- 18:48Speaker 1: and then a photo of Lily emerges. But we're not pregnant.
- 18:52Speaker 1: He then called Lily over and turned the camera on
- 18:54Speaker 1: her and she shouted, not pregnant, not pregnant for the
- 18:57Speaker 1: fucking 15,000th time. She added, how on earth is me
- 19:01Speaker 1: hatching out of an eagle's egg a pregnancy announcement? Lily
- 19:05Speaker 1: just has a boyfriend who makes funny videos of her
- 19:08Speaker 1: hatching out of an eagle's egg. And apparently that's what
- 19:11Speaker 1: the internet is clutching at as a pregnancy announcement. Look,
- 19:14Speaker 1: it is all very laughable. But to be fair, the
- 19:17Speaker 1: caption did reference a surprise at the end. And you
- 19:21Speaker 1: know what the internet's like. Everyone is like, this must
- 19:23Speaker 1: be an Easter egg.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Or a clue.
- 19:25Speaker 1: So if people are trying to manifest her being pregnant
- 19:29Speaker 1: for some reason... you know, it just seems like people
- 19:31Speaker 1: have got excited and run.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Away with it.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Well, I mean, the top clue for people should have
- 19:34Speaker 1: been that none of Lily and Jet's friends and family
- 19:37Speaker 1: commented on the post and Lily shared nothing about it.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I think that that should have put it to bed
- 19:41Speaker 1: for everyone. I hope if they ever do choose to
- 19:43Speaker 1: have a baby together and they make a pregnancy announcement
- 19:46Speaker 1: that they poke fun at that somehow. Yeah.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Was there any explanation as to why that video was
- 19:50Speaker 2: shared or what it was about or are we.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Still left guessing? I mean, I think that's probably just
- 19:54Speaker 1: his sense of humor. He probably just created it and
- 19:57Speaker 1: was bored and thought, oh, this is funny. I think
- 19:59Speaker 1: we need to see more of that from him. Well,
- 20:01Speaker 1: he's He's doing weekly photo dumps, everyone. So maybe there's
- 20:04Speaker 1: going to be some more content in there.
- 20:05Speaker 2: I might have to follow him. I know Lily Brown
- 20:07Speaker 2: has blocked us. Maybe he has too. I'm not sure.
- 20:09Speaker 1: No, I can still see his stuff.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Okay. Good morning.
- 20:13Speaker 1: My hands are orange. My heart is full.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Going to the offices today to record a podcast.
- 20:17Speaker 3: It's Friday.
- 20:19Speaker 1: TikTok is convinced Alex Cooper and Alex Earle are secretly
- 20:23Speaker 1: feuding with Before we get into it, Kate, can you
- 20:25Speaker 1: give us some background on each of the Alex's? Well,
- 20:28Speaker 1: Alex Cooper is arguably the most successful woman in podcasting.
- 20:31Speaker 1: She is the 30-year-old co-creator and host of Call Her Daddy.
- 20:35Speaker 1: And in 2021, she signed a three-year exclusive deal with
- 20:39Speaker 1: Spotify worth $ 60 million. Now, once that Spotify deal expired,
- 20:44Speaker 1: Alex set up her own podcasting network called The Unwell Network.
- 20:48Speaker 1: And when she announced the news, she revealed that she
- 20:50Speaker 1: had signed Alex Earle to her network. As for Alex L,
- 20:54Speaker 1: it's very confusing both being Alex's, but she has been
- 20:57Speaker 1: labelled TikTok's it girl. She's also Alex with an I.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Not that that helps, probably for an audio platform.
- 21:03Speaker 3: I know.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Well, she's 24 years old and she found fame by
- 21:07Speaker 1: sharing Get Ready With Me videos while she was studying
- 21:10Speaker 1: at the University of Miami. And Alex became one of
- 21:13Speaker 1: the fastest growing creators on TikTok and currently has 7
- 21:16Speaker 1: million followers on the platform, as well as 4 million
- 21:19Speaker 1: on Instagram. Now, on that podcasting deal, when it was
- 21:22Speaker 1: announced back in September 2023, Some of Alex Earle's fans
- 21:26Speaker 1: voiced that they didn't think it was the best deal
- 21:28Speaker 1: for her. Because Alex Earle actually has nearly double the
- 21:31Speaker 1: amount of followers Alex Cooper has. So Earle has a
- 21:34Speaker 1: collective following of 11 million, while Cooper has just under
- 21:38Speaker 1: 6 million. So a lot of people were saying, well,
- 21:40Speaker 1: there's clearly a lot of crossover of both of their audiences.
- 21:43Speaker 1: So it's not actually that big of a coup for
- 21:45Speaker 1: Alex Earle to have been signed by Alex Cooper's network.
- 21:49Speaker 1: especially when presumably Alex Cooper is taking a big portion
- 21:53Speaker 1: of Alex Earle's podcast revenue. Yeah, but that being said,
- 21:56Speaker 1: TikTok followers are very different to podcast followers. So Alex
- 22:00Speaker 1: Cooper has one of the biggest podcasts in the world.
- 22:04Speaker 1: She has an inbuilt audience who are already sitting there
- 22:07Speaker 1: ready to consume content. It is more difficult to take
- 22:10Speaker 1: a TikTok audience over a to podcasting. I don't know
- 22:14Speaker 1: about that because when influencers who have a big following
- 22:17Speaker 1: launch a podcast, they just promote it on their TikTok.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Not always because I think that some people are happy
- 22:23Speaker 1: to watch a 30 second video of someone getting ready,
- 22:27Speaker 1: but they don't necessarily want to hear 30 minutes of
- 22:30Speaker 1: what they have to say. But that's for people who
- 22:32Speaker 1: don't have a public profile and need a leg up.
- 22:34Speaker 1: So for instance, a lot of people probably don't remember,
- 22:37Speaker 1: but the She's on the Money podcast that was originally
- 22:40Speaker 1: produced by Shameless Media. So back in the day, I
- 22:44Speaker 1: remember Shameless were like, oh, we've been working on this
- 22:46Speaker 1: other podcast and they really promoted it in their own feed.
- 22:49Speaker 1: And that was Victoria Devine's podcast, She's On The Money. Now,
- 22:52Speaker 1: Victoria Devine was the brains behind the podcast and she
- 22:55Speaker 1: produced it and came up with the idea herself. And
- 22:57Speaker 1: she was a very successful business person, but she didn't
- 22:59Speaker 1: really have much of a social media profile. Yeah.
- 23:02Speaker 2: And she didn't have that audience.
- 23:03Speaker 1: So a lot of the shameless listeners went over to
- 23:06Speaker 1: Victoria Devine's podcast and it's obviously extremely successful now. So
- 23:11Speaker 1: while you could say, oh, well, Alex Cooper really has
- 23:14Speaker 1: bolstered Alex Earle's podcast, I argue that she would have
- 23:16Speaker 1: had a similar success if she just promoted it on
- 23:19Speaker 1: her own channels. I don't think that Alex Earle joined
- 23:22Speaker 1: Alex Cooper's network for exposure and for an inbuilt audience though.
- 23:25Speaker 1: I think she joined the network because she needed help
- 23:28Speaker 1: with producing her podcast. getting ideas, editing, like everything else
- 23:33Speaker 1: that the network offers, maybe help with podcast ads as well.
- 23:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:37Speaker 1: And that is a good point, but it's clear something
- 23:39Speaker 1: has happened between the pair and things have gone south because-
- 23:43Speaker 1: While neither party have commented on the rumored feud, there
- 23:46Speaker 1: are a few telltale signs that something is going on.
- 23:49Speaker 1: So a big clue took place last week when Alex
- 23:52Speaker 1: Earl didn't attend the Unwell Super Bowl party. And this
- 23:55Speaker 1: was despite her being in town for the game. And
- 23:58Speaker 1: apparently it's not the first Unwell Network publicity event that
- 24:01Speaker 1: she's missed either. So fans have noticed that she hasn't
- 24:03Speaker 1: been in attendance for a while now. Another sign is
- 24:07Speaker 1: that the Unwell Network socials have reduced how much they
- 24:10Speaker 1: promote her. So you She used to be the poster
- 24:13Speaker 1: girl of the network, but that has changed. So Alex
- 24:16Speaker 1: Cooper has been spruiking influencer Hayley Batchelder a lot recently.
- 24:21Speaker 1: It also seems like the Alex's have taken opposite sides
- 24:25Speaker 1: in another very public podcasting feud. So It probably sounds
- 24:29Speaker 1: a little bit familiar, but two podcasters who were signed
- 24:32Speaker 1: with Barstool are also having a messy friendship breakdown. So
- 24:36Speaker 1: the podcasters in question are Grace O'Malley and Brianna Chickenfry.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Come on, Chickenfry is not her real last name, is it?
- 24:43Speaker 1: I have to be honest, I was not familiar with
- 24:45Speaker 1: them and I had to double check. And no, it
- 24:47Speaker 1: isn't her real last name.
- 24:48Speaker 2: It is her stage name.
- 24:50Speaker 3: I suppose.
- 24:50Speaker 1: It's very appropriate. Another sort of chicken burger slash chicken
- 24:53Speaker 1: fry reference here.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Well, these two were best friends since high school and
- 24:56Speaker 1: they've had this big public bust up.
- 24:58Speaker 2: They're no longer doing the podcast together.
- 25:00Speaker 1: And Alex Cooper has had Brianna on her show while
- 25:02Speaker 1: Alex Earl has had Grace on hers. Well, the real
- 25:06Speaker 1: smoking gun for me was when Alex Earl did an
- 25:09Speaker 1: interview with her dad, TJ, on a podcast in early December. Now,
- 25:13Speaker 1: TJ manages Alex and her sister. And during the episode,
- 25:17Speaker 1: Alex said that her dad is good at having hard
- 25:19Speaker 1: conversations with people, especially when it comes to when people
- 25:23Speaker 1: don't realize Alex's full potential of what she needs to
- 25:26Speaker 1: be doing. TJ then also went into detail about a
- 25:29Speaker 1: recent incident where he had to take care of some
- 25:32Speaker 1: drama for Alex while keeping her out of it. While
- 25:35Speaker 1: he initially called it a business situation, he alluded that
- 25:38Speaker 1: there was more to it by saying it was also
- 25:41Speaker 1: something else. He then went on to say that at
- 25:43Speaker 1: the time he wasn't happy about it and still isn't
- 25:46Speaker 1: happy about it. And as the internet does, people have
- 25:49Speaker 1: put two and two together and a speculating TJ is
- 25:52Speaker 1: referring to Alex Earl signing with the Unwell Network. I mean,
- 25:56Speaker 1: this whole thing does make a lot of sense. It
- 25:58Speaker 1: seems like Alex Earl is distancing herself from Alex Cooper
- 26:02Speaker 1: and the network, and it is predicted she will jump
- 26:04Speaker 1: ship as soon as her contract is over with the network.
- 26:09Speaker 1: And before we go, we want to address a TikTok
- 26:11Speaker 1: that's gone viral about our podcast. So off the back
- 26:14Speaker 1: of a topic about Ruby Tuesday Matthews bleaching her nine-year-old
- 26:17Speaker 1: son's hair, Amy made a very throwaway line about an
- 26:21Speaker 1: Adelaide mum she saw on TikTok who fake tans her children. Yeah.
- 26:26Speaker 1: And you will have noticed that Amy's voice is absent
- 26:29Speaker 1: from today's show. And that is because we have suspended
- 26:32Speaker 1: her over her comments. I'm just joking. We haven't really.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Amy's 31 weeks pregnant and she hosted her baby shower yesterday.
- 26:39Speaker 1: She is absolutely exhausted. I don't think anyone should host
- 26:42Speaker 1: past 30 weeks pregnant. That was a bit of a mistake.
- 26:45Speaker 2: I mean, we did help her.
- 26:45Speaker 1: And we do want to clear this up because the
- 26:47Speaker 1: way TikTok works, there's no context.
- 26:49Speaker 2: And Amy has got pregnancy insomnia at the moment.
- 26:52Speaker 1: And as you do, you scroll on TikTok very late
- 26:55Speaker 1: at night. And for some reason, she has been down
- 26:58Speaker 1: this rabbit hole of people fake tanning their kids and
- 27:02Speaker 1: kids fake tanning routines. Now, She has seen a snippet
- 27:06Speaker 1: of Matilda Norton, who is the Adelaide Creators content, where
- 27:10Speaker 1: she said this line.
- 27:11Speaker 5: A lot of new faces here since I confessed to
- 27:14Speaker 5: tanning my two little boys. So I thought I'd do
- 27:17Speaker 5: a little bit of an intro and tell you guys
- 27:18Speaker 5: a little bit about myself. So my name is Matilda.
- 27:20Speaker 5: I'm a stay-at-home mom to two little boys, Banks and Albie.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Now Matilda created that video off the back of her
- 27:27Speaker 1: going viral after she shared a satirical video about fake
- 27:31Speaker 1: tanning her children.
- 27:32Speaker 2: She obviously does not fake tan her children.
- 27:36Speaker 5: Okay, I get so.
- 27:37Speaker 6: Many comments like this about Albie's gorgeous tan skin and
- 27:41Speaker 6: I'm going to share with you how we maintain the
- 27:43Speaker 6: summer glow for him, not me, clearly. So what I
- 27:47Speaker 6: do is after his bath, I just do two layers
- 27:50Speaker 6: of Bondi Sands Ultra Dark and.
- 27:53Speaker 1: I do want to point out that this was an
- 27:54Speaker 1: offhand comment. We didn't actually concentrate the whole segment calling
- 27:58Speaker 1: out Matilda or anything along those lines. And I want
- 28:03Speaker 1: to give Matilda a bit of a shout out because
- 28:05Speaker 1: she is an Adelaide creator who is doing so well
- 28:07Speaker 1: at the moment. I'm sorry that she was caught up
- 28:09Speaker 1: in this offhand comment. Her parenting content is amazing. She
- 28:13Speaker 1: is actually a very avid listener of the podcast. We
- 28:16Speaker 1: went back and had a look and we've actually been
- 28:17Speaker 1: chatting to her since I think like 2021. It's so
- 28:20Speaker 1: funny how social media works because I think it was
- 28:22Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago, you sent me one of
- 28:24Speaker 1: her videos about how she's creating a mom's group in Adelaide.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Which is such a good idea. You should join. And
- 28:30Speaker 1: when I saw it, I was like, that name looks
- 28:31Speaker 1: so familiar. And I didn't put two and two together
- 28:33Speaker 1: that it was the same Matilda that's in our DM.
- 28:35Speaker 1: So if you do see her video popping up, please
- 28:39Speaker 1: spare us a thought. It was a bit of a
- 28:41Speaker 1: fuck up, quite embarrassing. And in saying that, I do
- 28:44Speaker 1: really feel for Amy because that just shows the big
- 28:46Speaker 1: difference between TikTok and Instagram. So I feel like on Instagram,
- 28:49Speaker 1: you have the context of who the people are that
- 28:51Speaker 1: you're following, but the way the TikTok algorithm works you
- 28:54Speaker 1: just shared this random content based on what you're looking at.
- 28:57Speaker 1: So if you've just been scrolling watching a whole bunch
- 28:59Speaker 1: of content of people fake tanning their kids and then
- 29:01Speaker 1: this one pops up and it's like, oh, I went
- 29:04Speaker 1: viral for fake tanning my kids and you scroll on.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I just want people to know we do have a
- 29:07Speaker 1: sense of humour.
- 29:08Speaker 3: Yes.
- 29:08Speaker 1: We do get satirical comedy.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Yes, we do.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Maybe we need a bigger attention span. Yeah, we need
- 29:13Speaker 1: to put a block on Amy's phone so she's not
- 29:14Speaker 1: scrolling TikTok again at 4am. Well, I think that is
- 29:17Speaker 1: all we have time for today. Thank you so much
- 29:20Speaker 1: for joining us for another episode. If you have enjoyed it,
- 29:22Speaker 1: could you please make sure you are subscribed on Apple
- 29:25Speaker 1: Podcast and also Spotify and leave us a five-star review.
- 29:30Speaker 1: This podcast was recorded on the traditional land of the
- 29:32Speaker 1: Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. We pay respect to
- 29:35Speaker 1: elders past and present.
