- 0:12Hello friends, it is Sean. Here it is Wednesday, it is the
- 0:1713th of September and I am so glad that you have decided to
- 0:22press play. And here you and I are, and we
- 0:25are going to read what is undoubtedly one of the shortest
- 0:30chapters of Isaiah. And this is an incredible
- 0:33turning point, a fulcrum in the story of the people of God as
- 0:39everything turns yesterday. Well, the last two days we've
- 0:43had this incredible story of God rescuing Judah and rescuing the
- 0:47king from impossible situations. And then today we hear the king
- 0:53just throwing it all away and inviting the Babylonians into
- 0:57the holiest of places where they will then turn around and take
- 1:02the people of Israel away. Sorry, the people of Judah away.
- 1:05And in fact, not today. But when we return to Isaiah in
- 1:10a while's time, we will begin in chapter 40, which is God
- 1:14speaking comfort to his people from their place of exile in
- 1:20Babylon. So this really is the last
- 1:22chapter of the people of Judah in Jerusalem before it all turns
- 1:27pear shaped for them. Really, really pear shaped.
- 1:31So join me, friends, as we read together these words in Isaiah
- 1:35chapter 39. Soon after this, Meridac
- 1:50Balladan, son of Balladan, King of Babylon, sent Hezekiah his
- 1:55best wishes and a gift. He had heard that Hezekiah had
- 1:59been very sick and that he had recovered.
- 2:02Hezekiah was delighted with the Babylonian envoys and showed
- 2:07them everything in his treasure house, the silver, the gold, the
- 2:11spices and the aromatic oils. He also took them to see his
- 2:16Armory and showed them everything in his royal
- 2:19treasuries. There was nothing in his palace
- 2:22or Kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.
- 2:27Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked him what
- 2:31did those men want? Where were they from?
- 2:34Hezekiah replied they came from the distant land of Babylon.
- 2:40What did they see in your palace?
- 2:42Asked Isaiah. They saw everything, Hezekiah
- 2:46replied. I showed them everything I own,
- 2:49all my royal treasuries. Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah,
- 2:54listen to this message from the Lord of Heaven's armies.
- 2:59The time is coming when everything in your palace, all
- 3:03the treasures stored up by your ancestors until now, will be
- 3:08carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the
- 3:13Lord. Some of your very own sons will
- 3:16be taken away into exile. They will become eunuchs who
- 3:20will serve in the palace of Babylon's king.
- 3:25Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, this message you have given me
- 3:29from the Lord is good, for the King was thinking at least there
- 3:35will be peace and security during my lifetime.
- 3:50Lord Jesus, protect our hearts when all is going well and we
- 3:56get the better of ourselves and the temptation comes along to
- 4:01give it all the way. Lord, protect our hearts.
- 4:07May we always stay true to you, May your truth, may your
- 4:13provision, and may our sonship and daughtership in your family
- 4:20always be the bedrock upon which we make every decision in our
- 4:24life. Thank you for the stable
- 4:27foundation that you give us to live every day from, and I pray
- 4:32that we would remain cognizant of it, and that the example of
- 4:36Hezekiah can be a good lesson and warning for us that you are
- 4:42indeed the heart of our lives and not that temptation to
- 4:46yield, no matter how benign and foreign and far away that nation
- 4:52of Babylon or whatever the tempting power is in our life,
- 4:57we are yours, Lord, and we dedicate ourselves to you in our
- 5:01entirety. We love you, Jesus.
- 5:05You are our King, and it's in your name that we pray.
- 5:10Amen.
