- 1:33Speaker 4: Who moved with it.
- 1:35Speaker 5: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:40Speaker 5: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:43Speaker 5: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:48Speaker 5: And a little lonely.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 2:21Speaker 6: Hey, Mr.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Jones.
- 2:22Speaker 6: Huh? Mr.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Dillon, how are you?
- 2:26Speaker 4: Hi, Chester. Well, sir, I sure am glad to see
- 2:30Speaker 4: you back. Well, it's good to be back, Chester.
- 2:33Speaker 7: My, you've been gone over a month.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Six weeks, to be exact.
- 2:38Speaker 7: Gracious, you sure must have covered a lot of territory.
- 2:40Speaker 5: Well, I'll tell you all about it later. What's been
- 2:43Speaker 5: going on here?
- 2:44Speaker 4: Oh, nothing much, I guess.
- 2:45Speaker 8: You know how Dodge is.
- 2:46Speaker 7: Things are just about the same.
- 2:48Speaker 4: They are, huh? What about that new sign over the
- 2:51Speaker 4: long branch there?
- 2:52Speaker 6: New sign?
- 2:53Speaker 4: Let me see. Oh, my goodness, Mr. Dillon, I plumb forgot.
- 2:56Speaker 4: That happened the week you left.
- 2:58Speaker 5: Sam Noonan and Kitty Russell, proprietors.
- 3:02Speaker 7: Ain't that the doggone thing you ever heard of? They're
- 3:05Speaker 7: partners now, Mr.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Dillon.
- 3:06Speaker 7: Miss Kitty bought a half interest in the place, and
- 3:08Speaker 7: her and Sam's running it together.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Well, where'd Kitty get the money?
- 3:11Speaker 7: Well, you know Miss Kitty, she never spends much, and
- 3:14Speaker 7: she's been saving it for years and years.
- 3:16Speaker 5: I guess it mounts up you save money that way.
- 3:19Speaker 7: You ought to go and say hello, Mr.
- 3:20Speaker 6: Dillon.
- 3:21Speaker 7: Miss Kitty's been waiting real proud for.
- 3:23Speaker 9: You to get back.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Oh, I'd like to. If you'll put my horse up
- 3:26Speaker 4: for me.
- 3:27Speaker 7: Sure will.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Okay. I'll see you at the office later.
- 3:30Speaker 5: All right, sir. Hello, Sam.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Well, Marshal Dillon. When did you get back?
- 3:46Speaker 5: Just now. Saw your new sign outside, and I came
- 3:49Speaker 5: in to see if the price of whiskey had gone up.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Well, Marshal, the price of whiskey went down at the
- 3:55Speaker 4: Long Branch.
- 3:56Speaker 5: What?
- 3:56Speaker 4: Yeah. First thing Kitty talked me into it.
- 3:59Speaker 5: Well, knowing you, that must have taken some talking.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Well, you know, she was right. We're making more money
- 4:05Speaker 4: than ever.
- 4:06Speaker 5: I sure got to hand it to her. Well, good.
- 4:08Speaker 4: And where is she?
- 4:11Speaker 9: She went to her room, Marshal. And, you know, I
- 4:14Speaker 9: wish you'd go up and see her. She's... She got
- 4:17Speaker 9: me worried.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Oh, why?
- 4:20Speaker 9: Well, we were sitting here talking business, and a boy
- 4:23Speaker 9: come in with a telegram for her, and she read it, and, well,
- 4:27Speaker 9: she turned kind of pale and then got up and left.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Huh.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Yeah, sure, Sam. I'll go see her.
- 4:35Speaker 3: ¶ ¶.
- 5:01Speaker 6: Oh, Matt.
- 5:03Speaker 5: Hello, Kitty.
- 5:04Speaker 6: Oh, come in.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Thank you. I just got back.
- 5:08Speaker 5: I thought I'd come around and congratulate you.
- 5:11Speaker 6: Oh, thanks.
- 5:15Speaker 5: Um, Kitty.
- 5:17Speaker 6: Huh?
- 5:18Speaker 5: Sam told me about the telegram, uh, If there's anything
- 5:22Speaker 5: I can do to help.
- 5:23Speaker 6: Oh, Matt, you got it all wrong. Sam, too. It's
- 5:26Speaker 6: not bad news.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Oh? Well, I'm glad to hear that.
- 5:30Speaker 6: It's my father, Matt.
- 5:32Speaker 4: What?
- 5:33Speaker 6: My father, Wayne Russell. He's coming here to Dodge tomorrow.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Well, I thought your father was lost.
- 5:43Speaker 6: Well, he has been. I've never even seen him. He
- 5:47Speaker 6: left my mother in New Orleans a few months after
- 5:49Speaker 6: I was born.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I know.
- 5:51Speaker 6: He was a gambler, Matt. He worked the riverboats. Mother
- 5:54Speaker 6: always said he was a very charming man. Funny thing is,
- 5:59Speaker 6: she never held it against him, Mr. Zirkin. She just
- 6:02Speaker 6: accepted it as the way he was. In a strange
- 6:05Speaker 6: sort of way, she was proud of him.
- 6:09Speaker 5: Well, how do you feel.
- 6:10Speaker 6: About him, Kitty? Same as my mother, I guess.
- 6:16Speaker 5: He's coming tomorrow, you say, huh?
- 6:19Speaker 6: Matt, Will you go to the depot with me to
- 6:21Speaker 6: meet him? Like I say, I'm real happy about it.
- 6:25Speaker 6: But I feel kind of scared.
- 6:29Speaker 3: The End.
- 6:54Speaker 6: Matt, you really think he'll be on it?
- 6:57Speaker 4: Now, you just keep calm, Kitty.
- 7:00Speaker 6: People are starting to get off, see?
- 7:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I see.
- 7:03Speaker 6: Oh, I just thought of something.
- 7:04Speaker 5: What?
- 7:05Speaker 6: Well, I recognize him. I don't even know what he
- 7:07Speaker 6: looks like. Matt, what'll I do?
- 7:09Speaker 4: Now, wait a minute, wait a minute.
- 7:12Speaker 5: Ah, here comes Chester with somebody now.
- 7:14Speaker 6: Oh, you think that's him?
- 7:16Speaker 5: Well, he's about the right age.
- 7:18Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 7:19Speaker 5: Gray hair.
- 7:20Speaker 4: He's dressed mighty fancy.
- 7:22Speaker 6: What'll I say to him? Maybe it isn't him at all.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Easy now, Kitty.
- 7:27Speaker 5: Well, I found him, Miss Kitty.
- 7:29Speaker 4: He'd come right up to me and ask if I
- 7:31Speaker 4: knew you. Now, can you imagine that?
- 7:33Speaker 5: So you're Kitty.
- 7:35Speaker 6: Hello.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Ah, you're beautiful. I knew you'd be beautiful.
- 7:39Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 7:40Speaker 4: I know how you feel, child. When we get acquainted,
- 7:42Speaker 4: we're going to be great friends, Kitty.
- 7:44Speaker 6: Well, sure. I mean, of course. Well, this is Marshal Dillon.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Welcome to Dodge, Mr.
- 7:51Speaker 8: Russell.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Thank you, Marshal. It's a pleasure to know you. Kitty,
- 7:55Speaker 4: I want to meet all your friends. And I have
- 7:57Speaker 4: an idea.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 7:59Speaker 4: I'd like to give a dinner tonight. I trust there's
- 8:01Speaker 4: a restaurant here that could accommodate it? Oh, there sure is, Mr.
- 8:04Speaker 7: Russell, and that is a fine idea. Delmonico's, that's the best.
- 8:08Speaker 7: We could go there right now and tell them to
- 8:09Speaker 7: get started cooking.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Chester.
- 8:11Speaker 5: Well, I'm only trying to help you.
- 8:13Speaker 6: That'd be pretty expensive, wouldn't it?
- 8:14Speaker 4: Kitty, my child, expense doesn't matter. I own a very
- 8:17Speaker 4: prosperous freighting business in New Orleans now. I've had it
- 8:20Speaker 4: for some time.
- 8:21Speaker 6: Well, that's wonderful.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Will you invite your friends for me, Kitty?
- 8:24Speaker 6: Yeah, if you want.
- 8:26Speaker 4: And about how many shall I tell them to expect?
- 8:28Speaker 6: Well, Chester and Matt and Doc Adams and... Oh, I
- 8:33Speaker 6: don't know.
- 8:34Speaker 7: Well, ain't you gonna ask Sam, Miss Kitty?
- 8:36Speaker 4: After all, he's your partner now. A partner? What partner, Kitty?
- 8:41Speaker 6: Oh, it's nothing.
- 8:42Speaker 7: Nothing?
- 8:43Speaker 6: Why, Mr.
- 8:44Speaker 7: Russell, she's half owner of the Goin' Saloon in Dodge,
- 8:47Speaker 7: that's all.
- 8:48Speaker 8: Is this true, Kitty?
- 8:49Speaker 6: Well, it's really Sam Noonan's place.
- 8:51Speaker 8: But you're associated with her in the saloon business?
- 8:56Speaker 6: An unmarried woman has to make a living... I'm making
- 8:59Speaker 6: a good one.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Of course, of course. Well, we'll talk about all this later, Kitty.
- 9:04Speaker 8: But tonight we'll celebrate till we.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Say 8 o'clock at Delmonico's. I'll see you there tomorrow?
- 9:09Speaker 4: I certainly, sir.
- 9:10Speaker 2: I'll take you over to the hotel, Mr.
- 9:12Speaker 6: Russell.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Thank you, Jesse. Very kind of you to put yourself
- 9:16Speaker 4: out of the way.
- 9:18Speaker 8: Well, Kitty?
- 9:20Speaker 6: So that's my father, huh?
- 9:23Speaker 5: He's quite a gentleman, isn't he?
- 9:27Speaker 4: Matt? Yeah.
- 9:29Speaker 6: I need a drink.
- 9:44Speaker 3: I want to thank you for recommending the place, Chester.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Of course, I guess it ain't like.
- 9:47Speaker 6: What you're used to in New Orleans.
- 9:49Speaker 9: Miss Kitty's talking to me. That was a pretty good.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Meal, wasn't it, Mr.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Robinson?
- 9:53Speaker 4: I want to thank you for recommending the place, Chester.
- 9:56Speaker 7: Of course, I guess it ain't like what you're used
- 9:57Speaker 7: to in New Orleans. Miss Kitty's told me about how
- 10:00Speaker 7: good they eat.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Down there, ain't you, Miss Kitty?
- 10:03Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess so, Chester.
- 10:05Speaker 4: What's the matter with Kitty, man?
- 10:07Speaker 5: I don't know, Doc.
- 10:09Speaker 7: She keeps looking at him sideways, but she sure doesn't have.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Much to say to him.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Well, I guess she's still kind of shy.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Shy?
- 10:17Speaker 8: You mean kitty? Oh, nonsense.
- 10:19Speaker 5: You better fill your glass, doggy. What's that? Sam Noonan's
- 10:23Speaker 5: getting ori-eyed. I think he's just about to propose a toast.
- 10:27Speaker 8: Oh, no, that's all we need.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Now, you see what I mean?
- 10:32Speaker 9: Gentlemen, now, let's drink a toast. A toast to my
- 10:36Speaker 9: new partner... Kitty Russell and to her old man.
- 10:41Speaker 4: I mean her father.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Sorry, Mr.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Russell.
- 10:44Speaker 9: And a very happy reunion and many more of them
- 10:49Speaker 9: forever and forever and forever.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Oh, I'm getting thirsty. Thank you, gentlemen.
- 10:57Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 10:57Speaker 4: This is the.
- 10:58Speaker 5: Happiest day of my life.
- 11:09Speaker 8: Here's to you, Kitty, and to the Russells, the proud Russells.
- 11:17Speaker 7: Oh, hooray.
- 11:19Speaker 5: Oh, hooray for everybody. Oh, my, you better lock Chester
- 11:24Speaker 5: and Sam in the same cell tonight, man.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a pretty good idea.
- 11:28Speaker 6: Well, I'm afraid I gotta go now.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Come, Kitty, the evening's just started.
- 11:32Speaker 6: Yeah, well, it started at the Long Branch, too. I'm
- 11:35Speaker 6: in business, remember?
- 11:36Speaker 1: Yes, I know.
- 11:38Speaker 6: I don't think Sam's going to be much help tonight.
- 11:40Speaker 6: I'd better get down there and take over.
- 11:41Speaker 9: Kitty, I ain't going to be no help at all.
- 11:44Speaker 6: Don't you worry, Sam. You stay and have a good time.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Kitty, you can't go out there on the street this
- 11:49Speaker 4: time of night. Well, I'll go with her, Mr. Russell. Well,
- 11:53Speaker 4: she must leave. I'll stop in later and say good.
- 11:55Speaker 8: Night, Kitty.
- 11:55Speaker 5: Good night, sir.
- 11:56Speaker 7: Good night.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Doc, keep an eye on those two, will you?
- 12:05Speaker 5: That was a pretty nice party, huh?
- 12:12Speaker 6: Yeah, fine.
- 12:18Speaker 5: Al, what is it, Kitty? Because he disapproves of your
- 12:21Speaker 5: being in the saloon business?
- 12:23Speaker 6: You'll get used to it, Matt. Maybe I gotta get
- 12:27Speaker 6: used to having a father, that's all.
- 12:29Speaker 5: You haven't made him feel very welcome.
- 12:32Speaker 6: I haven't decided yet whether he's welcome or not.
- 12:35Speaker 5: I didn't mean to interfere, Kitty. It's no business of mine.
- 12:39Speaker 6: I understand that. We'll see you soon enough.
- 13:00Speaker 8: Well, that's a good-looking horse Chester's riding, man.
- 13:03Speaker 4: He's thinking of buying it, Doc. Buying it? With what?
- 13:07Speaker 5: That horse will be as old as Methuselah before he
- 13:10Speaker 5: closes the deal.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Well, that could be.
- 13:15Speaker 5: Isn't that Kitty and her father coming out of the bank? Yeah.
- 13:19Speaker 8: Is she treating him as cold as ever, man?
- 13:22Speaker 5: It's been two weeks and she hasn't changed a bit
- 13:24Speaker 5: toward him as far as I've noticed.
- 13:27Speaker 9: Well, she's waving to you.
- 13:29Speaker 5: She wants you to come over there. Yeah, I guess so.
- 13:32Speaker 4: I'll be back directly, Doc.
- 13:33Speaker 5: Yeah, the sun will keep your seat warm. Okay.
- 13:40Speaker 4: Morning, Marshal. Morning, Miss Russell.
- 13:43Speaker 5: Morning, Kitty.
- 13:44Speaker 6: We've got some news for you, Matt.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Oh, good news, Marshal.
- 13:47Speaker 6: Matt, we've been talking to Mr. Botkin, and he'll buy
- 13:50Speaker 6: my share of the Long Branch anytime for cash.
- 13:55Speaker 5: You mean you're thinking of selling out?
- 13:57Speaker 6: Tomorrow morning. Just before we leave.
- 14:01Speaker 5: Just before you leave?
- 14:04Speaker 6: I'm going back to New Orleans, Matt. I'm going to
- 14:07Speaker 6: take my money and put it into my father's freight
- 14:09Speaker 6: business there.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Makes sense, Marshal. Kitty and I should be together.
- 14:13Speaker 6: Besides, the saloon business is no place for a lady.
- 14:16Speaker 6: I can see that now. I've had to learn a
- 14:19Speaker 6: lot in the last couple of weeks, Matt.
- 14:22Speaker 8: Yeah, I guess you have.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Well, if you're going to get packed, you better start, Kitty.
- 14:25Speaker 6: I am, right now. I'll see you at supper.
- 14:27Speaker 8: Fine. I'll go over to the depot and see the
- 14:30Speaker 8: Santa Fe agent about our tickets. I'm a proud man today, Marshal.
- 14:33Speaker 8: A proud and happy man.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Now, will you excuse me? Uh, Kitty.
- 14:43Speaker 6: Yes, Matt?
- 14:45Speaker 4: Whose idea was this?
- 14:47Speaker 5: That you're selling out and all?
- 14:50Speaker 6: Well, he likes to think it was both of ours. But?
- 14:54Speaker 6: I'll have to give him the credit, Matt. He's been
- 14:56Speaker 6: talking about it one way or another for two whole
- 14:59Speaker 6: weeks now. He's awful smart. He can convince anybody of anything.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess he can.
- 15:05Speaker 6: What is it, Matt? Don't you like him?
- 15:09Speaker 4: It doesn't matter whether.
- 15:11Speaker 5: I like him or not, Kitty.
- 15:12Speaker 6: No. No, I guess it doesn't.
- 15:15Speaker 4: But, uh.
- 15:19Speaker 5: I sure don't trust him, Kitty.
- 15:21Speaker 6: Now we're getting somewhere.
- 15:23Speaker 4: What?
- 15:24Speaker 6: I'm gonna need your help, Matt. I don't trust him either.
- 15:28Speaker 3: I don't trust him.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Morning, Mr. Russell. Morning, Marshal. Well, I see the train's ready.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Where's Kitty? She insisted on meeting me here.
- 16:05Speaker 8: She wanted to do her business at the bank alone
- 16:08Speaker 8: for some reason.
- 16:09Speaker 5: Well, maybe it's because this is the last time she'll
- 16:11Speaker 5: be doing any business on her own.
- 16:14Speaker 4: I hope so. No woman should be in business anyway.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Yeah, especially Kitty. She trusts people too much. They take
- 16:23Speaker 5: advantage of her.
- 16:24Speaker 4: Not anymore, I can assure you. I only hope she
- 16:27Speaker 4: gets here with that money.
- 16:28Speaker 5: Well, nobody's likely to hold a woman up in broad daylight, Mr.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Russell. But they would at night, eh?
- 16:36Speaker 5: Oh, there are some men who'll do anything for a dollar.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Day or night. Yes. Ah, there she comes.
- 16:44Speaker 5: I told you she'd be all right. Nobody'd bother Kitty anyway.
- 16:48Speaker 5: She's awful well-liked around here, Mr. Russell.
- 16:51Speaker 4: A lot of people. Yes. Yes, of course.
- 16:55Speaker 5: They take it mighty personal if anything happened to her,
- 16:58Speaker 5: no matter who did it, Mr.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Russell. Morning, Kitty.
- 17:02Speaker 6: Morning, Matt.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Father. You're late, Kitty.
- 17:05Speaker 6: Jane hasn't left.
- 17:06Speaker 4: No, but we'd better be getting aboard.
- 17:07Speaker 6: All right.
- 17:09Speaker 4: Don't you have a bag of some kind?
- 17:11Speaker 6: Oh, my baggage is all taken care of.
- 17:13Speaker 4: I need a handbag.
- 17:14Speaker 8: You're not carrying anything.
- 17:16Speaker 6: I know.
- 17:17Speaker 4: Where's the money, Kitty? Didn't you get it?
- 17:19Speaker 6: No, Father, I didn't. What? I changed my mind at
- 17:22Speaker 6: the last minute.
- 17:23Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 17:24Speaker 6: I decided to leave it here in the Long Branch
- 17:25Speaker 6: with Sam Noonan. It's a good investment. I can always
- 17:28Speaker 6: come back for it.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Look here, Kitty.
- 17:30Speaker 4: I'm deciding things for you from now on.
- 17:31Speaker 6: We won't talk about it on the train.
- 17:33Speaker 4: No, no, we're not leaving until you get that money.
- 17:35Speaker 6: Which is it you want, Father? Me or the money?
- 17:38Speaker 4: It isn't a question of that. Now, you do as
- 17:40Speaker 4: I say.
- 17:41Speaker 6: You haven't changed a bit. What? Mother always said you'd
- 17:44Speaker 6: never change it. She was right. Don't tell me you're
- 17:47Speaker 6: running a freight business in New Orleans.
- 17:48Speaker 8: That's enough.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Easy, Mr.
- 17:49Speaker 6: Russell.
- 17:50Speaker 4: You stay out of this, Marshall.
- 17:51Speaker 6: You're just another man to me, Father. And a crook besides.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Kitty, you're going to be sorry for this.
- 17:58Speaker 6: I'd be a whole lot more sorry if I let
