- 0:00SPEAKER_00: And I parked about eight or ten cars away from any other cars.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Went and did my grocery shopping, came back outside.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Again, there was no cars anywhere near my car except for one wise guy that pulled up so close to the parking to the driver's side door, there was no way that I could open the door to get in.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: And you know there's nothing as awful as that smell of burning clutch first thing in the morning.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: There's no way that thing would fit in the back trunk.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Is there gonna be more rust underneath the car because of that?
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: But is the is the are the the the main components of the structure gonna rust out in the car?
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it probably will.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: And I still remember a customer saying, Oh, the price went up.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: I guess Gary's planning on buying another Porsche, is he?
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: And of course, as the miles pile up, the value of the car starts to go down.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: I've noticed that uh my Porsche 718 Spider is way more expensive to maintain than my 987 Box Durus was.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: I've owned in daily driven performance cars for pretty much 50 years, and that includes what I'm currently driving, and that's my uh Porsche 718 Spider and GR Corolla.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: In this video podcast, I'll share the real world realities of parking, space, real-world limitations, social interaction, costs, and those all-important survival tips.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: By the end of this video podcast, you'll know if daily driving a performance car is definitely right for you and your lifestyle.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: When I started getting some of my dream sports cars and dream sedans, like my RX7 and my Audi Quattro, I started to realize very quickly that when you use those cars on a daily basis, and especially when I use those cars and my company cars, you burn them up really fast.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Now, just to be clear, this isn't about hating performance cars by using them on a daily basis.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: This is about really knowing what you're getting yourself into by daily driving a performance car.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: You know, often you hear about all these young guys that dream of having a Lambo, and maybe somehow they come into money or they've they've hit big on social media and they buy those at Lambeau, and then they quickly realize that a Lambo on a daily basis, yeah, there's a lot of limitations to that.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: If you're considering making your dream car your only car, you really got to hear this.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: So parking anxiety is definitely a real thing.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Having your car sitting outside in a parking lot all day long is definitely, it can be definitely a huge concern.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Between uh door dings and birds and the sun fading your paint and your interior, that's a real thing.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Sure, you might take the route of parking at the back of the parking lot away from everyone else, but that has its own risks.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: You know, some of those parking lots at the perimeter or the back of the parking lot aren't maintained as well.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: So there could be nails, there could be glass in those areas.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: And uh and then there's also the smart guys out there, the wise guys.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: So I remember parking in a grocery store parking lot, and I parked about eight or ten cars away from any other cars.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Went and did my grocery shopping, came back outside.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Again, there was no cars anywhere near my car except for one wise guy that pulled up so close to the parking to the driver's side door, there was no way that I could open the door to get in.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: I waited around for a little while to confront this person, um, but unfortunately I had to get going, so I had to go crawl in through the passenger side and uh and do that.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: So obviously this person did this intentionally just to piss me off.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And of course, the other concern with when you're parking uh further away uh in the parking lot to protect your car is the extra five-minute walk.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: It's uh and if it's pouring rain, you're gonna get wet.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, so and you know, sometimes I think by having your car stand out like that, you may actually even put a bigger target on it with those guys that uh just like to mess up with cars and maybe key the side of the car again, just to piss you off.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: And then when we get to grocery stores, that's a whole different dilemma with those shopping carts.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: So again, now you have to kind of uh factor into the whole equation.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: If a uh a parking, if a shopping cart gets free and it's windy, where that shopping cart might end up.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: So you need to make sure you don't park downwind of those shopping carts.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Sure, a great way too to park at the perimeter is you can park against a curb.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: That way you're first of all maximizing uh the space to the outside of your car by parking close to the car to the curb, but then of course you run the risk of uh getting curb rash on those wheels.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: So again, you have to be very, very careful in those situations.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: So a lot of cars um you can get uh side protector strips uh to protect the car from door dings.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: I know we have that on my wife's uh Lexus RX 350, but I looked at getting it onto my GR Corolla.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Nope, not available.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: And I found that happens in a lot of cases with uh performance cars.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Now, luckily I don't have any door dings, but I need to be really careful to make sure I don't get any door dings.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Now, paint protection film is a great thing to have if you're gonna be daily driving a performance car.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: To protect the front end uh not only from stone chips, but from just minor uh parking lot mishaps or people rubbing up against the car or some situations like that, that'll definitely help.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: So valet parking, that's another thing.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, often you can say, hey, I'll just park it myself, and uh you can do that.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: But some places don't allow you to do that.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: So again, you let the valet park the car.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: You maybe give them a little tip ahead of time or a bigger tip ahead of time just to be careful and cross your fingers when you go to pick it up that it's the way you left it.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Uh so then there's speed bumps.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: So you have to be careful the speed bumps.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: And it's not just the front of the car, the lip of the car that it clears the speed bump.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: I know what happened to me.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: I went through a local um shopping plaza here, and uh, and there was some speed bumps.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: They were quite big speed bumps, but I kind of approached them on an angle, and I noticed I and then when I did approach them head on, I didn't scrape.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: But when I drove over them a little bit faster than I should have, I actually bottomed out after the the speed bump was behind the front axle.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: So again, it's not just the clearance on your front lip.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: You have to go over those speed bumps very, very slowly.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: You know, the thing is the driveways that are a steep angle.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: So what you do is you approach those on an angle, right?
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: You don't approach them head on, and it's less likely that your front splitter is going to scrape.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know, you have to kind of judge that ahead of time, and you have to always keep watching ahead of time.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: So if you go if you drive the same route and you notice that one time you can you scraped or you came very close to scraping, then obviously you can plan that.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: But other times when you're driving in areas that you're not accustomed to driving in, yeah, you never know, right?
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: You never know.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: And then there's the whole drive-thru situation, right?
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: So I don't know what it is with drive-throughs, but they always have massive curves.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Um, they've got very narrow uh angles and very narrow corners.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: So again, you have to be careful.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: So a lot of the times I avoid the drive-thru.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: I just go in, pick up my food, and take it out.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Parking garages, yep, there's another concern, right?
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Those uh those tight curve corners as you're going up through their different elevations.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Sure, they can be a lot of fun, but they also can be a little bit scary.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: And a lot of the cars coming the other way aren't as thoughtful as you are and aren't as careful as you are.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: And generally I find parking garages, the parking spaces are very, very small.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: So again, you have to be careful.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: And whatever you do, you don't want to take up two spots because then that really pisses people off.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: So the best you can do is find a pillar or something like that, park close to the pillar to maximize the space on the other side of your car, uh, back it all the way in, and again, cross your fingers.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: And then something else you have to think about is real estate, where you're gonna buy a home or where you're gonna get a condo.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: So you need to definitely check that out if you've got a car or you're planning to get uh performance cars in the future with uh a low front lip or um ground clearance or uh a steep uh angle going into the um into the the parking garage or coming out of the parking garage.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Um if you're buying your own home and you want to have a be out in the country like I am, um definitely can't buy something on a gravel road, right?
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: You need to have something that's on a paved road.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: And again, you need to think about your driveway.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Is it steep?
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: So they repaved the road here, and all of a sudden they the height was quite a bit higher.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: So now I did have a steeper um incline going up to the pavement.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Now luckily my car doesn't bottom out or doesn't hit there, but it wasn't something I had thought of before I bought this property.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: The other thing you have to think about is um how well the road is maintained.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: I we went to visit a friend uh a couple years ago in northern Ontario, and uh they advised us not to bring the Porsche because the roads were so rough, and uh and I'm glad I didn't, because he's right, the roads were so rough, it was incredible.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: And actually, I've been on um uh country roads uh with my spider, um just driving on country roads and just driving moderate speeds, and because there are so many undulations in the road, I actually bottomed out a couple times.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: So again, you need to plan ahead, slow it down a little bit, and uh and make sure you don't bottom out.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: And if you have a manual transmission car, and uh and again, if it's really steep and you're you're going onto a lot of steep inclines in that, again, you have to be careful, but you also have to be careful that you don't burn out that clutch.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: And you know there's nothing as awful as that smell of burning clutch first thing in the morning.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Again, you need to think about um parking space.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: So condos more and more are limiting the amount of parking spaces that are available.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: So if you daily drive um a performance car, that's great.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: But if it's uh if like me, you have to have two performance cars, one that you daily drive year round, and one you just daily drive, or drive uh whenever you want in the summertime, because of snow, you can't drive it in the wintertime.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Now you have to plan on at least two parking spots.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: So a lot of condos only have that availability.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Some of them even have no parking spots.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: So you've got to plan for that.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: If you're buying a home, again, you think about a garage.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, everybody liked to have a nice uh two-car garage or three-car garage, something like that.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: And when it comes to front lip protection, you can always go with uh a front axle lift to accommodate those speed bumps and uh those steep driveways.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Now, when I was in um North Carolina last year and I rented a C8 uh Corvette convertible for a few days, it had the front axle lift.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Now, uh it give me a real education that.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: First of all, it was very slow.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: So again, you've got to plan for it.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: You gotta stop, you've got to let the car lift up, and then you gotta go over it.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: The next thing you've got to realize is you have to keep judging it.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Is that gonna be do I need the axle lift for that or not?
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: You know, so again, you've got to plan for it.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: But the real reality of it, of it was, like I say, it was a rental car, but when I looked at the the front uh lip on this car, it was the worst.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: It had the most chips and uh chunks out of it of any front lip I've ever seen, with a front axle lip lift and without a front axle lift.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: And if you do have a front axle lift, the other thing to keep in mind, it is going to cost you a lot more uh money for maintenance on the front suspension of that car going forward.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Subscribe and hit the bell if you want more honest performance car ownership content, not those weekly car reviews.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: And by the way, how much does it cost to replace a front lip?
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean some cars are very, very difficult to replace, but generally speaking, it could be anywhere from$500 to well over$10,000.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Some of these are carbon fiber, some of these are very difficult to remove and reinstall.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: So definitely keep that in mind.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: And as the years roll by, they may no longer become available if you've got a 20 or 30-year-old car.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: So you may want to buy one and just put it away if you're that fussy about uh that front lip.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, and then there's trunk space, right?
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: So um with my Porsche uh spider, I've got a front trunk and I've got a back trunk, but they're very peculiar size.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: So if I'm going to Costco or somewhere like that, I have to really plan ahead what I'm gonna be buying.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Because if I want to get one of those big blocks of toilet paper or paper towels, yeah, it's not gonna fit.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Um I might be able to open up the package and you know strategically place it uh within the back trunk.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Uh it might fit in the front trunk, but that's pretty much uh going to be it.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: So again, you're very limited for space when it comes to shopping.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Um I remember not that long ago my wife and I uh were renovating our house, and we drove, uh, went on a Sunday drive to a nice uh kind of a touristy area, beach type area, and we looked at some shores at stores and I found a great light fixture.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Well, I had to do a whole multitude of measurements to see if that light fixture would actually fit in my car so we could purchase it and bring it home.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: Because again, I was driving my uh 718 spider.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Now, there are certain limitations.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, if if you've got a lot of small pieces, you can kind of place them around and make them fit.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: But um I think the maximum length is like 32 or 33 inches of anything.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: So I know this light fixture, we actually take it apart, take it out of the box, disassemble it, and put the various pieces into the uh into the frunk uh to be able to bring it home.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: The other thing is that uh for track days, I I bring a tent to put all my stuff in uh during the day.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Well, again, I'm limited to the type of tent I can bring.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: So the type of tent I have now is the kind with all those little poles you piece together and that kind of thing.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: But I wanted to get one of those that you just twist and that pops up.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Well, the smallest one I could find, I think was something like when it's closed, was something like 34 inches in diameter.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Well, there was no place in my car other than maybe the passenger seat, and then I wouldn't see it be able to see out the passenger side window to be able to fit it.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: And uh it just seemed so ridiculous that it just wouldn't fit anywhere.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: And golf clubs um might be able to get one set of golf clubs in the back of my um uh spider.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: I I'm not a golfer, so I uh it's not a concern for me.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: But anything long like that, yeah, it's definitely going to be a problem.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: If you get a flat, where are you gonna put the tire?
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, hopefully on your passenger's lap.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: And the other thing is you need to realize, of course, is that most performance cars, um, and I include my GR Corolla in this, to be honest, is that they have very limited back seat room.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: So I remember um years ago when I had my uh first RX7, the early 80s, I remember I um I wanted to give my mother and my grandmother a ride home, uh a ride downtown so they could do their shopping.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Well, I had to take one and then I had to go back and get the other one.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Super impractical.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: And they both thought that I was absolutely crazy for having just a two-seater car.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, you got to plan for that kind of thing.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: Now, my GR Corolla, yeah, it technically, technically has a back seat, right?
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: But I'm six foot one, so there's nobody sitting behind me.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: There's just no room for that.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: So we could maybe get three people in, the passenger uh front passenger seat we'd move up and that kind of thing.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: But do you really want to go through all that stuff?
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: Something to think about.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: So another thing is my wife has mobility concerns.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: So because of that, she needs to use a walker or a wheelchair or something like that uh to get around.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: So my wife and I are planning to go to Porsche Parade this year, and we've been to several Porsche Parades, but we vowed that we would never go unless we actually were able to take our own car.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Well, uh, guess what happened?
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: We couldn't find a walker that would fit anywhere into uh our uh Porsche 718 Spider.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: So um what we did find though is on Amazon I found uh a travel wheelchair, you know, it's the kind of wheelchair that you push someone in, not that they push themselves.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Um going by the dimensions, it was going to fit in the back trunk just but it would fit.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: I ordered it, it came, the dimensions were wrong.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: There's no way that thing would fit in the back trunk.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: But luckily, I was able to turn it around and I was able to fit it in the front trunk.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: So, but again, it was super stressful because yeah, we could have taken the GR Corolla to Porsche Parade, but yeah, it's just not the same.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: And then if you're doing any home improvement projects or anything like that, well, obviously you're not gonna fit anything into a Porsche anyway.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: But even the GR Corolla, yes, you can fold down the back seat.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Yes, you can kind of uh put things in there.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: But a roof rack, that's your friend.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: Now, I definitely consider a hot hatch a performance car.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: And uh and as far as I'm concerned, that's a great choice for an everyday car, daily driver, and to have as a performance car.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: And cars like the GR Corolla or the Golf R or cars like that definitely are a great choice for something if you're gonna have one vehicle.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: And like I say, uh for my particular situation, I like it because I've got my 718 Spider for date nights and going for uh scenic drives with my wife for track days and just fun drives in the summertime, um, and then that GR Corolla to be able to use as my daily, year-round uh great in the snow.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: And you can see why SUVs have become so popular.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: And yeah, you can get an SUV performance car, some of the BMW uh ones and things like that.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: But you know, for me, uh 6,000-pound performance car, uh, yeah, it's just it just doesn't make sense for me.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: Uh I guess I'm old school, but I like cars that are light, nimble, and fast.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: So again, if you're in an area like I am where we have real winter with lots of snow, we have several feet of snow out there right now, to be honest.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Um, one of my performance cars, my 718 spider, needs to be stored.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: So again, I need to have storage space for that.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: But not just any storage space, I have to have heated storage space because the tires can't be stored at anything below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: So a condo garages typically are the right temperature, so that shouldn't be a problem at all.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: But if you're getting your own real estate, definitely uh consider that uh before you make that decision.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: And yeah, you can put winter tires on your performance cars.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: I know lots of folks that live in areas that get less snow than I do here in our area.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: They put uh winter tires on their Porsches and they uh go through the winter no problem.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: In fact, I I've uh a friend of mine has said uh older 911s, because of their huge weight uh in the rear uh bias, uh, were great in the snow.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: I can't uh attest to that myself, but it seems peculiar.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: But uh they said yeah, it worked uh really, really well.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: And don't forget the extra cost of the having an extra set of winter wheels and winter tires.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: It can be anywhere from two to four to eight or ten thousand dollars, depending on how much money you want to spend and how uh nice a set of wheels you have.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: And then there's salt and road debris, which is much, much worse uh in the winter in areas that do get some snow.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: And again, do you want to submit your performance car to that?
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: So again, I don't want to submit my uh 718 spider to those kind of conditions, so I don't drive it in in the wintertime.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, with a GR Corolla, it's submitted to those kind of conditions, that's for sure.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: But again, I've got PPF on the front, on the hood, on the front bumper, on the front fenders, and those um uh flares that are just before the rear wheels to protect that as much as possible.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: But yeah, is it gonna uh rust um is there gonna be more rust underneath the car because of that?
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: A lot of the nuts and a lot of the bolts and a lot of the fasteners are usually the first thing to rust.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: You know, is the frame gonna well, they don't have a frame, obviously, but is the is the are the the the main components of the structure gonna rust out in the car?
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it probably will, but it'll probably take 25 or 30 years.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: But again, keep that in mind if you're gonna drive a performance car in the winter.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: And by the way, you don't have to store your car in your own garage.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: You can always uh store it in a facility that's specifically made for car storage, but keep in mind the cost.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: It gives anywhere from 200 to 500 or more dollars a month just to store that, those cars.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: And often they have a certain time period over which you need to store your car for a minimum.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: And there's also access to those cars.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: So if you want to uh do some work on your cars uh during the wintertime, like me, that's what I do, that's when I work on my cars uh during the downtime during the wintertime.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: You often won't get access because there's other cars in front of it.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: Um is there a place to plug the car in on a battery tender to maintain that battery?
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: You know, all those things have to be considered.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you can always get a winter beater to use in the wintertime while your performance car is in a storage facility.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: But um, keep in mind that you're giving up a lot of the joy of driving during that time.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: And believe me, I absolutely love driving my GR Corolla in the wintertime.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's really cool, especially a lot of the roads around here are hard-packed uh for a long time and they're they're they're they're quite slippery.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah, it makes for a lot of fun.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: Talking again about summer and the spring and the fall and things like that.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: If you have a performance car with those amazing cup two tires, think about driving that in the wet.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Think about driving that on the colder days or colder mornings and things like that.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: They definitely don't have the same grip they have in the in the dry.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: So if you are going to drive your car in those kinds of conditions, you know, you may want to get away from something like Cup 2s and go down a notch in terms of performance in the dry, and that is go to something like Michelin uh 4S's.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: That's what I have on my 718 Spider, and uh and and use that because those tires definitely aren't as great in the dry as the the Cup 2s, but they're way better than the Cup 2s in the wet and colder conditions.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: And they did driving your performance car for business use and things like that.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, being stuck in traffic, um being in a downtown urban area with lots of traffic and uh lots of uh tight areas and those kind of things, yeah.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: It can be quite unnerving.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: And uh the low seating position doesn't give you as much view.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: Everybody, it seems these days are buying or driving SUVs or pickup trucks that are very tall, so again, it's difficult to get a view around.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: All right, let's talk about gas station celebrity status.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: Wherever I go with my Miami Blue 718 Spider, and wherever I stop for gas, there's always somebody, hey buddy, love your car.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: How much does it cost?
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: How fast does it go?
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: Uh what's it like to own that thing?
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: Uh do you drive it in the winter?
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: Uh do you have snow tires for it?
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: Uh you know, how do you how do you put more than two people in it?
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: Does that bother you?
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: Like there's a million of all these questions.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: And uh at first it's kind of cool.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, you're pretty excited about uh sharing the experience uh with somebody.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: But you know, if you're in a hurry, you want to go in that kind of thing, you don't want to be a real dick and shut them down, you know.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: So you feel compelled to answer those questions.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: Like I say, if you've got the time, sometimes it's kind of fun, and sometimes you meet some uh really uh nice people, but sometimes not so much.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: And of course, those unsolicited racing challenges, right?
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: You're sitting at a stoplight and someone pulls up and And uh there's some revving up and that kind of thing.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: I don't get a lot of that, but again, I I don't live in urban areas.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: But one thing I do get a lot of is if I'm uh traveling on the highway, going to a uh Kentire Motorsport Park, uh racetrack or something like that.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: I get a lot of um usually um Japanese cars and and that kind of thing that have been lowered or obviously modified or sometimes not even that.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: And and I just notice them they'll slowly come behind me and they'll do something to get my attention.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: They'll like burst uh ahead or they'll they'll they'll fall back or they'll they'll do something like that.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: I don't think they're challenging me to race or anything like that.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: I think they're just trying to get attention by the Porsche guy, right?
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: And uh I I get some of that too with my uh GR Corolla, um, but it's it's not as much.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: And that's one of the great uh benefits of having a uh a hot hatch is that people that get it get it.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: People that don't have no idea.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: They just think that it's uh uh a Corolla that's got uh some spoilers added and something like that.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: And then there's always that assumption about wealth status.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, it must be nice to have a car like that, and that kind of thing.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: So one thing that uh I was uh until recently I was self-employed in a relatively small town, population 20,000.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: I still remember the one day that uh I was uh in the store and a price we had had a price increase on something like that, and I still remember a customer saying, Oh, the price went up.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: I guess Gary's planning on buying another Porsche, is he?
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: So yeah, you get that kind of uh uh thing going on where people make assumptions about your wealth.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: And like I say, especially when you're self-employed, um, you know, all prices go up, especially in a in I was in a retail environment, so uh prices go up all the time.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: We know that, okay?
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: They're not going up to uh so Gary can buy more Porsches.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: But like I say, people certainly make assumptions.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: So often you feel compelled to explain that you've made lots of sacrifices in your life to be able to buy this car, but yeah, nobody cares.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: And yeah, there can also be some privacy concerns where people will follow you and uh or you know, or you're in the parking lot and uh loading your car and unloading your car, and uh people will actually drive over to you and uh start a conversation.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it may be very innocent, but it may not be.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: And uh and there have been definitely instances where people will follow someone home and uh so that they learn out where will learn where they live and come back later to try to steal that car.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: And there's always those pictures, people that are out there taking pictures of themselves uh with your car or your their girlfriend with your car.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: And again, you have to be careful that they don't lean against the car or God forbid, sit on it, uh, or something like that.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: And then those pictures end up on TikTok or Instagram or somewhere like that, where you definitely hadn't planned those pictures to end up of your car.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: And then there's the pressure of always wanting to keep the car perfect.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, we all love the cars looking perfectly clean, perfectly detailed, and all set to go.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: And I there is a lot more pressure to it.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: Now, yeah, it's a labor of love.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: It is for me, and it probably is uh for you too to maintain your car uh that way.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: But you know, sometimes if it's a daily, and like I say, when I was using my daily performance cars as my company car, uh, you know, you just don't have the time to do that, you just don't have the energy to do that sometimes to do that.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: And you know, the the sometimes the specialness starts to wear off.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: And yeah, with performance cars, those bills just uh keep on coming.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: And uh so insurance is higher than it would be for an SUV or uh or that kind of thing.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: We all expect that.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: But when you daily drive your car, you're submitting it to more, you're submitting it to more mileage, you're submitting it to more use, and that kind of thing.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: So because of that, your insurance will typically be higher because uh you won't be able to fit under the minimum uh uh mileage level.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: You have to go to a higher level.
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: And uh, and I can understand why the insurance feels that way because you're exposing the car to more risk, right, by driving it more.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Um so there's that.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: And of course, as the miles pile up, the value of the car starts to go down.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: And then there's the consumables, right?
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: So your tires aren't gonna last as long, your brakes aren't gonna last as long.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, you're gonna be using more gas, and I don't know about your performance cars, but both of my performance cars uh use premium fuel.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: So again, that's a lot more expensive than uh regular gas.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: All those costs um go up.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: Windshield, I mean, everybody uh I don't know how many windshields I've replaced over the years, but on a windshield on a Porsche compared to a windshield on a Honda base Honda Civic is a whole different ball game for the cost.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: So again, more expensive.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: And uh so that's reflected either in insurance or you just have a higher deductible, and then you have to pay that out of pocket.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: And performance cars require more maintenance.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: Uh so you know, a lot of uh cars require oil changes, especially with synthetic oil, eight or ten thousand miles or something like that.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: Well, you definitely don't want to do that with a performance car.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: I definitely wouldn't do that with either of mine.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: So you know, you're maybe changing the oil every three or five thousand miles.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: Um and uh and there's a lot uh of other parts involved.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: So again, I've noticed that the GR Corolla parts are a whole lot more expensive than any other Corolla parts, uh be that brakes, be that uh different components and things like that.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: So it's definitely going to cost more.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: I've noticed that uh my Porsche 718 Spider is way more expensive to maintain than my 987 Boxter S was.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: Everything's more expensive.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Um, even just oil changes are more expensive because they have to take all the panels down from the bottom of the car to be able to do the oil change and then have to put the panels all back up again.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: So think about that, you know, that's definitely a consideration.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: And if you have something like a Ferrari or something like that, every single mile you drive it drops the value of the car.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: And sure, there's times when your dream car can become a source of stress for you.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: And you know, there's the constant vigilance about uh being concerned about where you're parking your car, how you're parking your car.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm taking the the car on a road trip for the weekend.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: I gotta make sure the hotel has uh safe parking.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: Where can I park?
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: I gotta get to the hotel uh fairly early.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: I gotta cut dinner plans short because I need to get back to the hotel fairly early so I get a good safe uh parking spot before everybody else gets back to the hotel.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, uh wear the security cameras in the hotel parking lot.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: You know, make sure you're parking your car uh near those.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: Uh make sure you're parking your car out in the open so that uh, you know, it can be, you know, so it's not it's obvious if someone's trying to break into it, but not too far out in the open that uh people might uh decide to key the car or something like that.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: So, you know, there is uh definitely a stress component to owning uh and daily driving a performance car.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: And of course, when you're driving your dream performance car in areas that it doesn't need to, you don't need to be driving that kind of car.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: Like I say, like when you're on a uh interstate highway, you're just kind of droning along at uh just over the speed limit or that kind of thing.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: Um you don't want to attract the attention of the local police department, you know, so you have to be careful.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: And when you're stuck in gridlock traffic and you're just sitting there, air conditioning on, the sun beating down, you're just sitting there looking around, and you just you you realize those people in those SUVs are probably more comfortable.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: They've got more room to move around, they can adjust their seat more, and that kind of thing.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: And uh they're probably more comfortable than you are right now.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: And if you drive it every day, the excitement of looking forward to a weekend drive may not be so exciting anymore.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: Because like I say, you do drive it every day.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: So to get up early Sunday morning and hit those uh twisties or do those canyon roads or that kind of thing, eh.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: I drove the thing all week, you know.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: May not just uh maybe next weekend.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: And sometimes if you're looking for that performance car to be the Swiss your Swiss Army knife to be able to do everything, it just doesn't work out that well.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: If you want to track the car, there's certain needs that the car has to have to track the car.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: If you're gonna drive it on a daily basis, you have certain needs for that.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: It's uh its ability to hold space, its ability to uh, you know, be reliable, obviously, but also not uh fatigue you if you need it for long drives and things like that.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: And a lot of cars are uh a lot of performance cars are noisy.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: Uh I mean I have a friend that has a GT3RS and uh and he loves the car.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: He bought it primarily for track use, and it's an amazing car on the track.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: But to take it for a longer drive or something like that, yeah, that's not gonna work.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: And his wife, I think she went in it once and she said, Yeah, that's enough.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: I'm not doing this anymore.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: Uh just because of the noise and because of the um the bucket seats, getting in and out of those seats, uh the harnesses, all that kind of stuff.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it just isn't worth it for a lot of people.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: So make sure it's worth it for you before you make that move.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: So you need to ask yourself, is this really for you?
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: Well, if your commute is relatively short, like 15 minutes or something like that, yeah, you're definitely a contender.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: If you've got somewhere to keep your car that's safe and ideally indoors, um, like in a garage or uh underground in a parking uh in a condo, that's uh definitely um definitely works in your favor.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: You don't have to worry about space for kids or for cargo on an ongoing basis, and you typically um just have two people in the car or less.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: You have a fairly high tolerance for unwanted attention, and you genuinely aren't that hung up about just minor little scrapes and dings on your car.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: So who should definitely think twice?
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: Well, people that have long commutes, anything over 30 minutes, yeah, you better think about that.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: If street parking is your only source of parking, yeah, definitely think twice about that.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: Also, if you have young kids at home or you're you constantly need to carry some cargo around with you, yeah, that's uh definitely a consideration.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: If this is your first performance car, yeah, definitely want to think that out because uh if it is your first performance car before you actually buy it, you may want to rent something like a C8 Corvette or something like that and try it for a week just to see how it works out for you, exactly how you were planning to use it.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: If you're on a tight budget and your car is your only major asset, make sure you got extra money on hand because you never know.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: And sure, there's a middle ground, and that's what I was talking about earlier, the hot hatches.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: I think that's a great middle ground.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: The performance you get from something like a GR Corolla or a Golf R is amazing for street use, and uh and they do have some space.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: You can put four people in it if you really had to.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: And you know, they're not as flashy, so they don't stand out as much, they're not as prone to being stolen.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, so a lot of those things uh work for you.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: So that's a good something to consider.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: All right, if you've already decided you are going to daily drive your performance car, here's some tips.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: So the first thing is look to see if there is a front axle lift system available.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: Um the people that I know that have them say they love them and they definitely swear by them.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: The next thing, PPF.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: Definitely paint protection film uh on the front of the car, the fenders uh in front of the back wheel arches.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: If you can PPF the whole car, all the better.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: So I would either ceramic coat the car or wax the car or seal that um uh PPF and make sure you keep reapplying that every six months or a year to uh to make sure that uh the dirt comes off very easily.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: I'd also suggest you look into wheel and tire protection plans.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: These have become uh very common lately, and uh, and the costs aren't all that bad.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: So um wheels on performance cars definitely aren't inexpensive, and the tires definitely aren't inexpensive either.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: So I definitely encourage you to check that out.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: Whenever you park the car, make sure you back into the parking spot.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: Um, the the back of the car, even though there may be a rear diffuser on it, definitely will have a backup camera so you can tell uh how far you're backing up.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: And that way you have a clear view of what's ahead of you when it comes time to leave.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: If you drive in, you never know how people are going to be sitting behind you by the time you come out, and you may be somewhat compromised and have difficulty getting out.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: So typically these cars are more difficult to see out the back of and the rear three-quarters.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: So by backing in, uh you have more control over that.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: It never hurts to scout out parking lots ahead of time and arrive a little bit earlier than most people are arriving.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: That will give you a lot more choices.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: And also think about as the parking lots fill.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: I know that uh there's a restaurant that I go to, and uh I have to be careful if I arrive a little bit early, that even though I think I parked my car fairly far out, the the parking lot just fills right up to that point.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: Definitely doesn't hurt to keep some detailing supplies in your car, you know, because of birds.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: Always a good idea to have emergency fund.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: Performance cars parts are definitely more expensive, and the repairs are definitely more expensive.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: Quite often when you're doing a repair, an engine repair or something like that, there's a lot of components that have to be removed to be able to get into the component that needs to be replaced, like a water pump or a turbo or something like that.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: So set money aside, you're gonna need it.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: So definitely have a backup plan in case your car is gonna be off the road uh for a period of time.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: I remember years ago I did some uh uh track days, private track days, with some guys that had some Ferraris, and they always said, Gary, if you have a Ferrari, you always have to have a second Ferrari to make sure that uh when because the first one is we'll be waiting for parts, so at least you can drive the second one while you're waiting for parts.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: Now, your situation may not be as extreme, but it happened to me that uh with my Porsche 718 Spider, a relatively new car, I had to wait uh three weeks to get brake pads because nobody in North America had them.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: You need to make a mental shift too in how you think about your cars.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: Cars are meant to be driven.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: Don't get so hung up about putting extra miles.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: If you bought the car, this is your dream car, drive it.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: Imperfections will happen, so accept them.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: And the memories are far more important than that resale value.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: Remember to buy the car that fits your life, not the life you think that car is going to give you by buying it.
