- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to another Radio Archive Hour with your buddy Phil
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hendry here from our website philhendryshow.com and our Radio Hall
- 0:06Speaker 1: of Fame show. And we got one here for you
- 0:08Speaker 1: from the year 2001, May 23rd. You know, we split
- 0:13Speaker 1: 2001 in half because of the terrible, terrible events of 9-11.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Post 9-11, we had a lot of satire.
- 0:20Speaker 1: We did an awful lot of talking to the audience
- 0:22Speaker 1: as well, just kind of chilling and, you know, trying
- 0:26Speaker 1: to get our heads around what happened.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Before that, it was business as usual.
- 0:29Speaker 1: This is from May of 2001, and it's our Korean
- 0:33Speaker 1: War veteran, Lloyd Bonafide. He started the show to discuss
- 0:36Speaker 1: his new bumper sticker, My Grandchild is Cuter Than Yours,
- 0:40Speaker 1: that he says is a slap in the face of
- 0:42Speaker 1: veterans with grandkids.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Why would he do that? Well, let's find out. Here's Lloyd.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Now, I have not let you into the station. I
- 0:49Speaker 1: know you came down here, sir. I can't let you in.
- 0:52Speaker 1: If you want to talk to me on your cell phone,
- 0:53Speaker 1: that's fine.
- 0:55Speaker 3: I'd better be fine.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Where are you?
- 0:57Speaker 3: Well, I'm out in front of the building right now.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Because I know you showed up because you wanted to
- 1:02Speaker 1: talk about it. If you want to be a guest
- 1:04Speaker 1: on a radio show, you have to book it through
- 1:06Speaker 1: a producer, then you go through the producer, and then.
- 1:08Speaker 2: We talk, and then we get you on, right?
- 1:10Speaker 3: Yes, I understand that.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Now I feel bad you've driven all the way over here.
- 1:14Speaker 2: What is it that you said?
- 1:15Speaker 1: Now, I know that you were involved in an altercation
- 1:19Speaker 1: with another man out in Alhambra.
- 1:21Speaker 2: The police were involved, having to do with a bumper sticker, correct?
- 1:25Speaker 3: I'm a Korean War veteran. 1950, 1952. The bumper sticker
- 1:30Speaker 3: on the car said, and I wrote, I have my notes,
- 1:34Speaker 3: my grandkid is cuter than yours.
- 1:37Speaker 2: This was a bumper sticker on the back of someone's car.
- 1:41Speaker 3: That is correct, and I read that out loud. My
- 1:44Speaker 3: grandson was with me. His name is Brent. He's five
- 1:46Speaker 3: years old.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:50Speaker 3: And I read that out loud. Now, the boy was
- 1:52Speaker 3: visibly shaken. And I love that boy.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Your grandson was upset by a bumper sticker that said,
- 1:58Speaker 1: my grandkid is cuter than yours.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Because he said, why is that man mean? Why is
- 2:03Speaker 3: that man mean? Now, I'm a Korean War, and all
- 2:07Speaker 3: of us Korean War veterans, Mr. Henry, you have to
- 2:10Speaker 3: understand now, are all grandfathers. We are old enough. And
- 2:14Speaker 3: that bumper sticker and bumper stickers like it spit into
- 2:18Speaker 3: the face of every Korean War vet with a grandchild.
- 2:22Speaker 1: The police report says you confronted this guy with a
- 2:25Speaker 1: bumper sticker.
- 2:26Speaker 2: My grandkid is cuter than yours.
- 2:29Speaker 3: If you could hold on, Mr. Henry, the guy comes
- 2:32Speaker 3: out of the store. I picked my grandson up and
- 2:35Speaker 3: I held him in front of the guy's face and
- 2:37Speaker 3: I said, you can't tell me this little boy isn't
- 2:40Speaker 3: at least as cute as your grandson. And I identified
- 2:43Speaker 3: the child as my grandson, so he knew that I
- 2:46Speaker 3: hadn't picked the boy at random.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:49Speaker 3: It was, and the guy claims it was, and I said, why?
- 2:54Speaker 3: And he said it's a goofy bumper sticker or some,
- 2:59Speaker 3: it was the worst excuse that I ever heard of
- 3:03Speaker 3: offending a boy and offending me. And I explained to
- 3:08Speaker 3: this monkey, and I don't make any apologies for that either.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I know that you're angry, and you don't have to.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Be angry with me.
- 3:16Speaker 3: I apologize.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I explained to the monkey with a— the monkey has
- 3:22Speaker 3: the bumper sticker, my grandkids cuter than yours. I said,
- 3:26Speaker 3: there's a generation of Korean war vets. There's a lot
- 3:30Speaker 3: of them are left over there, a lot of buddies.
- 3:33Speaker 3: They're dead on a hill, some unnameable hill, some faraway
- 3:38Speaker 3: place who died for this country. And we come home
- 3:42Speaker 3: and see that our grandchildren are ugly? I had a
- 3:47Speaker 3: buddy of mine come home from Korea in 1952, takes
- 3:52Speaker 3: a look at his kid, and the kid was ugly.
- 3:55Speaker 3: And this is the thanks that you get when you
- 3:58Speaker 3: come home and you see one of your kids got ugly. Now,
- 4:02Speaker 3: I told this guy that I'd been driving for 53 years.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Okay, let's get back to the bumper sticker.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Well, all of them. My other car is a Porsche.
- 4:12Speaker 3: And the one that makes me angrier than any of
- 4:15Speaker 3: them The one that says simply, back off. I've been
- 4:18Speaker 3: driving for 53 years. Nobody tells me to back off.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:22Speaker 1: So you took these things personally. But my concern is
- 4:26Speaker 1: that it escalated.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Yes, it did, sir. Through no fault of my own.
- 4:31Speaker 2: How did it escalate?
- 4:33Speaker 3: Well, he told me to relax. Pal, he says to me,
- 4:38Speaker 3: I'll never forget it. As long as I live, I'll
- 4:41Speaker 3: never forget him looking at me with this bowling shirt
- 4:44Speaker 3: that he was wearing and all of his nonsense. He says, relax, pal.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Can I tell you a story?
- 4:50Speaker 2: I just want to stick with the thing. He told
- 4:52Speaker 2: you relax, pal, and you got angry.
- 4:54Speaker 3: That is correct, but there's a reason.
- 4:56Speaker 2: What is the reason?
- 4:59Speaker 3: I was on board the SS Rowan. We're sending shells
- 5:01Speaker 3: into the Korean coast prior to Incheon. This monkey tells
- 5:05Speaker 3: me to relax as I'm loading shells. I dropped ordnance
- 5:09Speaker 3: on my foot. crushed the big toe in my right foot,
- 5:12Speaker 3: last part of the foot, because some monkey told me
- 5:16Speaker 3: to relax. You don't do that to a Korean war veteran.
- 5:21Speaker 2: This was in the heat of battle? You were in Korea,
- 5:23Speaker 2: and what, one of your shipmates?
- 5:27Speaker 3: This dim-bulb shipmate tells me to relax? I'm sending shells
- 5:33Speaker 3: into Incheon, trying to pave the way for the Marine Corps.
- 5:37Speaker 3: And so I dropped the shell.
- 5:38Speaker 2: You crushed part of your foot.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Crushed the foot. You know, let me tell you something, Mr. Henry.
- 5:44Speaker 3: You never tell a Korean War vet to relax. You
- 5:47Speaker 3: don't know what's going to come next.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Well, this was an interesting thing. Mike told me that
- 5:52Speaker 1: you wanted to go on the air live. I know
- 5:53Speaker 1: that you're outside. You're outside the building on a cell phone.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 5:57Speaker 1: All right, 1-800-449-8686, the number on the Phil Henry Show, 1-800-449-8686.
- 6:04Speaker 1: If you didn't hear the story, this man is a
- 6:06Speaker 1: Korean War veteran. I don't know what this has to
- 6:08Speaker 1: do with anything, but you were.
- 6:10Speaker 3: It has a hell of a lot to do with it.
- 6:12Speaker 1: All right, but you were outside of a market with
- 6:14Speaker 1: your grandson, a bumper sticker that said, My grandkid is
- 6:17Speaker 1: cuter than yours.
- 6:19Speaker 2: You took to be a slap to your face.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Absolutely. When the child was visibly shaken by this. Now,
- 6:27Speaker 3: I know there are a lot of grandparents that might
- 6:32Speaker 3: have pride, but you never, ever say... You don't say
- 6:35Speaker 3: it to me. My grandson's cuter than yours?
- 6:40Speaker 5: Oh.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Well, this is not only your grandson, but it's the
- 6:45Speaker 2: child of who?
- 6:46Speaker 3: My daughter's boy.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Five years old. What's his name?
- 6:49Speaker 3: He's a wonderful boy named Brent, and he never did
- 6:52Speaker 3: anything to ever deserve that.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Do you think it's personal?
- 6:56Speaker 3: No. Do I think it's personal?
- 6:59Speaker 1: Do you think the guy slapped the bumper sticker on
- 7:01Speaker 1: his car, does he have grandchildren?
- 7:03Speaker 3: He told me he, yeah, obviously he did, because if
- 7:08Speaker 3: he didn't, why would he have that?
- 7:11Speaker 2: Well, may I.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Propose something that perhaps somebody else has already suggested to you,
- 7:18Speaker 1: and it's Lloyd, right?
- 7:18Speaker 3: Yes, sir, Lloyd Bonafide.
- 7:20Speaker 2: All right.
- 7:20Speaker 1: That it wasn't personal, that they didn't put the bumper
- 7:23Speaker 1: sticker on the car to bug your kid?
- 7:26Speaker 3: No, you see, here's where they blew it. They didn't
- 7:29Speaker 3: know a Korean War veteran was going to be in
- 7:32Speaker 3: the car behind him. It's like last year, I'm going
- 7:35Speaker 3: over Laurel Canyon, and there's a guy there with back
- 7:38Speaker 3: off on his bumper sticker. And I had a golf club.
- 7:43Speaker 3: And I did a little damage to that guy's fender.
- 7:45Speaker 1: See, that kind of keying doors and beating in fenders
- 7:48Speaker 1: and beating, and that's an out-of-control kind of violence that
- 7:52Speaker 1: I think, and when the police arrived, according to their report,
- 7:55Speaker 1: they found you repeatedly kicking this man's car where the
- 7:59Speaker 1: bumper sticker had been.
- 8:00Speaker 3: If he hadn't been a bald-faced liar.
- 8:03Speaker 2: What made him a liar? Did you see his grandkid?
- 8:07Speaker 3: Let me tell you what. I saw the man's grandchild
- 8:11Speaker 3: sitting in a car seat, And that kid was not
- 8:14Speaker 3: cuter than my grandson. And I wouldn't want to say
- 8:17Speaker 3: this about a child, but I will say it because
- 8:20Speaker 3: it proves my point. The kid was ugly.
- 8:24Speaker 2: The other guy's grandkid?
- 8:25Speaker 3: His grandson was ugly compared to mine, and yet he
- 8:28Speaker 3: had a bumper sticker.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Did you deny admittance to this guy?
- 8:33Speaker 3: Yeah, the guy, a producer, wouldn't let me in.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Okay, hold on. 1-800-449-8686.
- 8:37Speaker 1: So now we get to the thing. He didn't like
- 8:41Speaker 1: the bumper sticker. He confronted a guy who had a
- 8:43Speaker 1: bumper sticker, my grandson is cuter than yours, because he
- 8:46Speaker 1: saw this guy's grandkid, and he said his kid was ugly.
- 8:50Speaker 1: And this is an affront to him as a Korean
- 8:52Speaker 1: War veteran.
- 8:52Speaker 2: 1-800-449-8686, Phil Henry Show. The Phil Hendry Show is back.
- 9:24Speaker 6: 1-800-449-8686.
- 9:24Speaker 3: What do you think about that, though?
- 9:26Speaker 1: What do I think about guys who have bumper stickers
- 9:28Speaker 1: that say, my other car is a Porsche?
- 9:29Speaker 3: Yeah, what do you think of that?
- 9:31Speaker 2: I ignore it.
- 9:33Speaker 3: You don't, and that doesn't tighten your jaws.
- 9:36Speaker 1: No, sir, that doesn't tighten my jaws. Guys has a
- 9:38Speaker 1: bumper sticker that says, my other car is a Porsche.
- 9:42Speaker 2: First of all, I don't believe him.
- 9:43Speaker 3: See, that's the part that bothers me. He's a bald-faced liar.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Because if his other car was a Porsche, what's he
- 9:50Speaker 3: doing driving the garbage can that he's in? Have you
- 9:53Speaker 3: ever thought about that?
- 9:55Speaker 2: No, I haven't.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I mean.
- 9:56Speaker 3: That's what... That's what... Just... really makes me angry. If
- 10:02Speaker 3: his other car is a Porsche, why is he driving
- 10:04Speaker 3: the garbage can car that he's in?
- 10:08Speaker 1: Okay, but we're talking about your grandson being offended by
- 10:11Speaker 1: a bumper sticker on another guy's car that said, my
- 10:12Speaker 1: grandson is cuter than yours, and you, according to you,
- 10:16Speaker 1: that other guy's grandson was ugly.
- 10:18Speaker 3: And I don't mean anything wrong with the boy. He's
- 10:20Speaker 3: probably a fine boy, but he was an ugly kid.
- 10:24Speaker 1: All right, 1-800-449-8686. Here is Robert on the Phil Henry Show.
- 10:29Speaker 5: Hello.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Hey, how you doing today?
- 10:31Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 10:33Speaker 7: I'm listening to this gentleman here, and I myself have
- 10:37Speaker 7: 13 years in service. I'm a staff sergeant in the
- 10:38Speaker 7: United States Army.
- 10:39Speaker 3: God bless you.
- 10:41Speaker 7: And I've been hearing this, and I will tell you this,
- 10:44Speaker 7: that I don't feel as a result of being a
- 10:47Speaker 7: veteran of conflicts and different engagements that I have any
- 10:50Speaker 7: preferential treatment or can mistreat people in any manner.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Are you a veteran of a foreign conflict? Yes, sir.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Which one?
- 10:57Speaker 7: You've heard of the Gulf War, right, sir?
- 10:59Speaker 3: I've heard of the Gulf War. I know that they
- 11:02Speaker 3: are in and out of there quicker than a fart.
- 11:05Speaker 7: Yes, sir, and we have no preferential treatment as a result.
- 11:08Speaker 7: What has happened is that you over the years have
- 11:11Speaker 7: definitely bloated your military career to the point where you
- 11:14Speaker 7: feel you have preferential treatment over the laws.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Well, let me ask you. You've got a kid sitting
- 11:18Speaker 3: with you. The child is visibly shaken by a bumper
- 11:21Speaker 3: sticker that says, my grandkid's cuter than yours. You look
- 11:24Speaker 3: at the other guy's grandkid. The kid's as ugly as
- 11:28Speaker 3: a quart of buttermilk, and the boy that you're with
- 11:31Speaker 3: is visibly shaken.
- 11:33Speaker 2: The kid was shaken?
- 11:34Speaker 3: He was very upset.
- 11:35Speaker 5: I understand that, sir.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Why do you do that?
- 11:38Speaker 7: I have a five-year-old daughter. If my daughter's that sensitive,
- 11:41Speaker 7: I'm going to tell her to get over it. You know,
- 11:42Speaker 7: my Lord.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Well, what if you see a bumper? Now, you're a
- 11:45Speaker 3: United States Army. Are you a veteran? Are you currently
- 11:48Speaker 3: in service?
- 11:49Speaker 7: I'm still in service, sir.
- 11:50Speaker 3: All right. Still in service. You see this bumper sticker
- 11:53Speaker 3: that says, My kid's cuter than yours. You look at
- 11:55Speaker 3: the kid. The kid's as ugly as paint on a barn.
- 11:59Speaker 3: And your kid's cuter?
- 12:01Speaker 7: I could care less, sir, because, you know, Sonia, it's
- 12:03Speaker 7: bigger issues.
- 12:04Speaker 3: In the world. You know, I don't get that. I
- 12:05Speaker 3: just don't get it. Sir, sir, I have one recommendation.
- 12:09Speaker 7: I'm not being insulting, but it sounds like you have
- 12:11Speaker 7: an anger management problem.
- 12:13Speaker 3: You know, you know, the cop said that to me.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Okay, now there's a cop that said it to you,
- 12:18Speaker 1: this caller said it to you.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Well, with all due respect to the, he's not a psychiatric.
- 12:25Speaker 2: He's not a psychiatrist. He's just a guy offering an opinion.
- 12:27Speaker 1: But if the cops said it, this guy said it,
- 12:29Speaker 1: this is a fellow serviceman, you're a veteran.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Maybe a.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Well, a lot of these monkeys I knew in the
- 12:35Speaker 3: service couldn't fight it with both hands, which I'm not
- 12:37Speaker 3: saying this gentleman is.
- 12:39Speaker 2: All right. Well, listen, Robert, thank you for your opinion,
- 12:41Speaker 2: especially since the cops said that.
- 12:42Speaker 3: No problem.
- 12:42Speaker 7: I do appreciate the opportunity.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Thank you. But he didn't fight... Okay.
- 12:47Speaker 2: He didn't fight what?
- 12:48Speaker 3: He was in the Gulf War.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Are you going to get on this kick about how
- 12:52Speaker 2: the Gulf War wasn't a real war?
- 12:54Speaker 3: Oh, we were in and out of there quicker than
- 12:56Speaker 3: a fart from a duck's ass. Okay, if we're going.
- 12:59Speaker 1: To talk about children and grandchildren and cuteness, let's keep
- 13:03Speaker 1: the language clean.
- 13:04Speaker 3: I apologize. But the Gulf War, we are in Korea.
- 13:08Speaker 3: The Japanese. Japanese. The Chinese. China peas. China peas? The Chinese.
- 13:13Speaker 3: All right.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Those were the cats you were fighting in?
- 13:23Speaker 3: In Korea.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Yes. What's this got to do with the bumper sticker, though, man?
- 13:28Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying, insofar as we served our country
- 13:33Speaker 3: to be insulted that way.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Evelyn is on the line. Evelyn, you're on the Phil
- 13:38Speaker 2: Henry Show.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Hello.
- 13:39Speaker 6: Hi.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Yes, ma'am.
- 13:40Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, I really think, you know, sir, you
- 13:43Speaker 6: need to see a doctor.
- 13:45Speaker 3: You have a.
- 13:45Speaker 5: Very bad problem.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Talk about a psychologist?
- 13:49Speaker 6: Listen, that grandchild of yours could not even have read
- 13:52Speaker 6: that sign at five years old. You had to read
- 13:54Speaker 6: it to him.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Is that what you did?
- 13:57Speaker 3: My grandchild, I said I was reading the sign, and
- 14:00Speaker 3: my grandchild said, what does that mean, Grandpa? Well, did
- 14:03Speaker 3: you have to tell him? He calls me Poppy. Well,
- 14:06Speaker 3: did you have to tell him?
- 14:07Speaker 8: I mean, really.
- 14:08Speaker 6: I mean, and in the first place, that was no
- 14:10Speaker 6: insult personally anyway.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Am I going to lie to the child?
- 14:12Speaker 6: And if you thought it was, there's a problem with you.
- 14:14Speaker 6: I mean, there's all kinds of bumper stickers out there
- 14:17Speaker 6: that have nothing at all.
- 14:19Speaker 3: All right, well, what do you think of this one?
- 14:21Speaker 3: How's my driving? 1-800-EAT-CRAP. What do you think of that?
- 14:25Speaker 6: I wouldn't hear anything about it because it had nothing to.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Do or relate to me. Oh, I see that. I
- 14:30Speaker 3: see that, and I want to come through the windshield.
- 14:33Speaker 6: There is where the problem lies is because those things
- 14:36Speaker 6: upset you. It's like every sign you see upsets you.
- 14:38Speaker 6: I mean, there's something.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Wrong with it. No, nothing upsets me. If it says
- 14:41Speaker 3: something like, have a nice day, I'm all right with it.
- 14:43Speaker 3: But if it says, 1-800-SUCK-MY-THING, I'm very much offended by that.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Well, it's okay to be offended.
- 14:50Speaker 6: Well, I'm sure it's offensive wording, but, I mean, it
- 14:53Speaker 6: has nothing to do with you.
- 14:55Speaker 1: It's okay to be offended by it, but it's something
- 14:58Speaker 1: not to take personally, okay?
- 15:00Speaker 3: And when you see your grandchild crying... What do you
- 15:03Speaker 3: think about that?
- 15:04Speaker 6: The only reason your grandchild cried... I'm 62 years old.
- 15:07Speaker 6: I've got a lot of grandchildren.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Are they good-looking? It doesn't upset them. Are they ugly?
- 15:11Speaker 3: Are they good-looking?
- 15:13Speaker 6: Well, they're cute. To me, they're probably the most beautiful
- 15:15Speaker 6: grandchildren in the world.
- 15:16Speaker 2: See, that's the thing.
- 15:16Speaker 6: You're looking through the... You know, if somebody says my
- 15:18Speaker 6: grandchild is cuter than you, I'll say, well, you know what?
- 15:21Speaker 6: That's your opinion. And that would be their opinion. I
- 15:23Speaker 6: wouldn't sit there and beat their car up.
- 15:25Speaker 2: What about that, Lloyd? What if you would have said
- 15:27Speaker 2: to the guy.
- 15:28Speaker 3: I was kicking the man's bumper.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Okay, but what if you would have said to the guy,
- 15:31Speaker 2: that's your opinion?
- 15:34Speaker 3: Boy, that's a tough one for a war veteran. You know,
- 15:37Speaker 3: I'm used to just taking things on head-on. A guy
- 15:40Speaker 3: says my grandkid's ugly, I'll put his face right into
- 15:43Speaker 3: the trunk of his car.
- 15:44Speaker 6: Sir, I don't know how old you are, but you know.
- 15:47Speaker 3: I'm 69 years old. All right, your war was years ago.
- 15:51Speaker 6: What, 50 years ago?
- 15:52Speaker 3: That is correct.
- 15:53Speaker 6: You should not have that war really upsetting you even now.
- 15:57Speaker 6: I mean, really, you keep going back to when you
- 16:00Speaker 6: were in Korea.
- 16:01Speaker 3: If your grandkids were ugly, I'm sure you'd admit it,
- 16:04Speaker 3: wouldn't you? No, I would not. There ain't no way.
- 16:07Speaker 6: I ain't going to admit my grandchild's ugly.
- 16:11Speaker 3: If you know that he's this guy, that's the thing
- 16:13Speaker 3: that bothered me, Mr.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Henry.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Well, what is the guy going to do? Yes, you're right, sir,
- 16:17Speaker 2: my grandkid is ugly.
- 16:18Speaker 3: If he'd had that much courage, yes. Okay, you're right,
- 16:21Speaker 3: the kid's frightening. But he wouldn't do that. Why would he?
- 16:26Speaker 6: It's his grandchild.
- 16:27Speaker 3: It's his grandchild.
- 16:27Speaker 2: I'm not going to say that in front of that child.
- 16:29Speaker 6: But not only that, the child to him is beautiful.
- 16:32Speaker 6: I don't care if it is the ugly kid in
- 16:34Speaker 6: the world.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Is your husband still alive?
- 16:36Speaker 6: Mine, yes.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 16:38Speaker 6: Yes, I have 14 grandchildren.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Do you play cards?
- 16:42Speaker 4: Sure.
- 16:43Speaker 3: I love to play pinochle. I do, too. And I
- 16:46Speaker 3: play spades, too. You like spades?
- 16:48Speaker 6: What's that got to do with it?
- 16:50Speaker 2: What are you doing?
- 16:51Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Okay. Thank you, Evelyn. Thank you.
- 16:56Speaker 3: 1-800-449-8686. I wanted to ask the lady if she does that.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Plays cards.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 17:06Speaker 2: 1-800-449-8686. Is this Vic?
- 17:09Speaker 4: Yes.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Go ahead, sir.
- 17:11Speaker 4: I just wanted to comment to the gentleman on the
- 17:13Speaker 4: line that I was with the 5th Marines at the reservoir.
- 17:17Speaker 3: God bless you.
- 17:18Speaker 4: We weren't sitting 12 to 15 miles offshore.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Wait a second. We helped you guys get out of
- 17:24Speaker 3: that reservoir. Yeah, we appreciate that. We appreciate that help, sir.
- 17:28Speaker 3: But you can't just keep, you know, how many years
- 17:32Speaker 3: ago was that? And you can't keep leaning on that. Oh,
- 17:35Speaker 3: you're right about that. I'm not trying to say nothing.
- 17:37Speaker 4: If you had just brought this whole thing up about
- 17:39Speaker 4: your grandchild without throwing the Korean thing into it, that
- 17:42Speaker 4: would have been great. I'm a Korean veteran and three
- 17:45Speaker 4: tours in the country.
- 17:46Speaker 3: God bless you. But, uh.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Marine, huh?
- 17:50Speaker 3: Yes, sir. Mother green in her fighting machine. But, you know,
- 17:53Speaker 3: you know what? You gotta.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Don't get your back up too much.
- 17:58Speaker 3: But the Marine Corps was sticking out like a sore
- 18:00Speaker 3: thumb there.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Okay, can we applaud? The guy's saying, don't get so upset.
- 18:05Speaker 3: All right, let's take the fact that I was in
- 18:06Speaker 3: Korea out of it, all right?
- 18:08Speaker 4: You weren't actually in Korea.
- 18:09Speaker 3: You were just offshore, sir. Just forget that I was
- 18:14Speaker 3: ever near there, okay?
- 18:16Speaker 4: Well, I wish you hadn't brought it up, but we
- 18:18Speaker 4: could have forgot it.
- 18:19Speaker 3: What are you going to do when someone says your
- 18:22Speaker 3: grandkid is ugly and you're a Korean War veteran You.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Just said that you weren't going to mention it, okay?
- 18:29Speaker 3: I'm not mentioning fighting there.
- 18:31Speaker 4: What does being a Korean War veteran have to do
- 18:33Speaker 4: with your child being ugly, sir? Or not as cute
- 18:37Speaker 4: as the next kid?
- 18:38Speaker 3: Look, I knew a guy by the name of Bobby Bale.
- 18:40Speaker 3: He had been in the United States Army. He'd fought
- 18:44Speaker 3: in the North Pacific, Saipan, WW2. He comes home. He
- 18:49Speaker 3: takes one look at his kid who was born when
- 18:52Speaker 3: he was over there, when he was in the service
- 18:54Speaker 3: in the Pacific. The kid's as ugly as hell. Now,
- 18:59Speaker 3: what's that like to come home to?
- 19:02Speaker 4: Well, let me tell you what, sir.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Did you come home to an ugly kid?
- 19:05Speaker 4: I came home three times from Vietnam. To a new
- 19:09Speaker 4: kid each time? I came into Travis Air... Could you
- 19:11Speaker 4: listen to me?
- 19:11Speaker 2: Just let the guy talk.
- 19:14Speaker 4: I came into Travis Air Force Base once. I went
- 19:17Speaker 4: into San Francisco International twice. The first two times. And
- 19:22Speaker 4: I got spit on. I got eggs thrown at me.
- 19:24Speaker 4: Tomatoes thrown at me.
- 19:26Speaker 3: It was Halloween.
- 19:27Speaker 4: No.
- 19:28Speaker 2: It wasn't Halloween. He was coming home.
- 19:31Speaker 4: I thought he said that he was at home. And
- 19:34Speaker 4: at the time, we were called murderers and everything else.
- 19:38Speaker 3: What's this got to do with my kid being ugly?
- 19:40Speaker 4: Well, the thing is, what it's got to do with
- 19:43Speaker 4: is the fact that you can't get upset with people
- 19:46Speaker 4: saying things to you.
- 19:48Speaker 2: And nobody said your grandkid was ugly. They said their
- 19:51Speaker 2: grandkid was cuter.
- 19:52Speaker 3: And it was a lie because that guy's kid could
- 19:54Speaker 3: make time stop.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Well, I was called a murderer, sir, and I got
- 19:57Speaker 4: over it.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Did you murder someone?
- 20:00Speaker 2: He was in Vietnam, they said.
- 20:01Speaker 4: We killed him.
- 20:02Speaker 3: We were Marines. We killed.
- 20:04Speaker 4: We didn't murder.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Well, God bless you, and I'll tell you, this kid
- 20:08Speaker 3: of mine would have made a hell of a Marine.
- 20:11Speaker 2: All right, listen, thanks for your call. 1-800-449-8686. Get this
- 20:15Speaker 2: guy to stick to the point, will you? Phil Henry Show.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Phil Hendry, 1-800-449-8686. What other bumper stickers? You say that
- 20:57Speaker 2: these bumper stickers you take personally.
- 20:59Speaker 3: I take them personally, yes, as a grandfather, as a father,
- 21:02Speaker 3: as a wife. The one that I don't like, and
- 21:06Speaker 3: I voted for President Bush, and I want to make
- 21:09Speaker 3: that clear.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 21:11Speaker 3: But I can't stand seeing all these Bush Cheney, you
- 21:14Speaker 3: know what I'm saying? They're all on SUVs. It irritates me.
- 21:21Speaker 3: It causes me to get a sick stomach. And yes,
- 21:23Speaker 3: I want to lash out. I want to lash out
- 21:26Speaker 3: with my fists.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Just because you're.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Seeing a bumper sticker that says Bush Cheney or the
- 21:31Speaker 1: other one you didn't like was.
- 21:33Speaker 3: My kid is an honor student.
- 21:36Speaker 8: Oh, man.
- 21:38Speaker 3: God, that just... Why?
- 21:40Speaker 1: Because somebody's got a kid that is achieving?
- 21:43Speaker 3: Well, what are you throwing it up at everybody's face for?
- 21:46Speaker 3: You make me want to have a If I had any,
- 21:50Speaker 3: like a floor limb.
- 21:52Speaker 1: I would.
- 21:53Speaker 3: All right, 1-800-449-8686.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Here is Susan on The Phil Henry Show.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Hello.
- 21:59Speaker 8: Hi, thank you so much for fighting so valiantly for
- 22:01Speaker 8: our rights and the freedoms that we have now.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 22:06Speaker 8: Thank you so much for fighting for our rights and
- 22:08Speaker 8: our freedom.
- 22:09Speaker 3: I can't hear.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Thank you for fighting for our rights and our freedom.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Okay.
- 22:15Speaker 8: Are you going to be able to publish some sort
- 22:18Speaker 8: of literature to let us know what we can and
- 22:20Speaker 8: cannot do?
- 22:21Speaker 3: Well, you know, you want to be facetious about it.
- 22:25Speaker 3: All I'm trying to do is let you know that
- 22:29Speaker 3: it's offensive to have a bumper sticker that says, choose
- 22:34Speaker 3: life for some of that nonsense.
- 22:36Speaker 8: Well, how many Americans are there?
- 22:38Speaker 3: Are you one of them with the abortion?
- 22:42Speaker 8: Am I one of them?
- 22:44Speaker 3: Did you have an abortion?
- 22:48Speaker 8: That is none of your business if I have or
- 22:50Speaker 8: have not.
- 22:51Speaker 2: What does that got to do with it?
- 22:52Speaker 3: Well, and why would you be upset? Do you have
- 22:54Speaker 3: the bumper sticker that says, hey, have an abortion? Ask
- 22:58Speaker 3: me how. Call 1-800... Okay, there.
- 23:02Speaker 8: Are how many of our Americans, but we're all supposed
- 23:05Speaker 8: to rip off our bumper stickers because you don't like them.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Not all of them, no.
- 23:09Speaker 8: Is this the message we're supposed to do? Is this
- 23:11Speaker 8: what we're supposed to do?
- 23:12Speaker 3: Not all of them, no.
- 23:14Speaker 8: Okay, and if your service in the military, do you
- 23:20Speaker 8: see that being equated with your.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Are you a mother?
- 23:22Speaker 8: Do you see that your military service.
- 23:25Speaker 3: Is equated with your insanity? Okay, so you're not a mother,
- 23:27Speaker 3: so you don't know what it is. And the other
- 23:29Speaker 3: bumper sticker, I don't like.
- 23:30Speaker 8: Well, you're not a mother either.
- 23:31Speaker 3: I'm a grandfather, and I don't like that one-day-at-a-time baloney
- 23:35Speaker 3: because those are all alcoholics.
- 23:37Speaker 8: Okay, what would make you happy?
- 23:39Speaker 3: Look, calling my kid... Ugly enough to crack a clock.
- 23:45Speaker 8: He didn't call your kid ugly. He had a bumper
- 23:47Speaker 8: sticker on.
- 23:47Speaker 6: Do you have a sense of humor?
- 23:50Speaker 3: Oh, so if I had a sense of humor, therefore
- 23:52Speaker 3: I would think, oh, he's kidding. His kid must be
- 23:54Speaker 3: so frightening he could make cars go off a freeway.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Is that it? I mean, you can't have it both ways, ma'am.
- 24:01Speaker 2: No, you're missing the point entirely.
- 24:03Speaker 1: She's saying my grandkid is cuter than yours because that's
- 24:07Speaker 1: the way parents and grandkids talk.
- 24:09Speaker 3: And when did you become a parent, Mr.
- 24:11Speaker 5: Henry?
- 24:12Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 24:13Speaker 2: All right, so I'm a stepdad, all right.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Yeah. And don't forget it. I fought for your right
- 24:18Speaker 3: to marry a woman with four kids. I fought. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
- 24:22Speaker 3: All right.
- 24:23Speaker 4: I hate it.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Thank you for your time.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Guy's a little flipped out.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Yeah, uh-huh.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Here's Donna on the Phil, or hold on for a minute.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Let's go over to Terry on the Phil Henry Show.
- 24:33Speaker 4: Hello.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Hi.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Yes, Terry.
- 24:35Speaker 5: I just got a comment.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Can't hear you. Can't hear you.
- 24:38Speaker 5: I just have a comment for the gentleman.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 24:41Speaker 5: He's got anger issues, for one thing, but my father
- 24:44Speaker 5: was served in Korea and Vietnam and was killed in action.
- 24:47Speaker 3: God bless him for that. And I'll bet you if
- 24:49Speaker 3: he came home and somebody said about you, hey, that Terry,
- 24:52Speaker 3: she sure is frightening looking.
- 24:54Speaker 5: Well, sir, that's the issue I'm making. My grandfather served
- 24:57Speaker 5: in World War II as a commander of a naval ship.
- 24:59Speaker 5: My uncles have been in the military.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Are you going to go see Pearl Harbor? Pardon? Are
- 25:05Speaker 3: you going to go see the Pearl Harbor movie? Absolutely, sir.
- 25:08Speaker 5: However, I heard it firsthand from my grandfather, so.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Well, you were his granddaughter. What if someone said, boy,
- 25:14Speaker 3: look at that Terry. She could make buttermilk run cold.
- 25:18Speaker 5: Well, sir, actually, sir, that has happened, and he said
- 25:22Speaker 5: that's their opinion. Never have I heard any of my
- 25:25Speaker 5: military family ever show such disrespect towards any other human
- 25:30Speaker 5: being for any reason.
- 25:32Speaker 3: You mean you are ugly?
- 25:34Speaker 5: I don't consider myself to.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Be one, but others might. Well, you said it happened.
- 25:38Speaker 5: But others might. That is their opinion, and beauty is
- 25:40Speaker 5: in the eye of the beholder.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Well, you said it happened.
- 25:43Speaker 5: Yes, it did when I was a child.
- 25:45Speaker 3: They said you were an ugly kid.
- 25:47Speaker 5: Well, they made comments that theirs were cuter, and they said,
- 25:49Speaker 5: you know, that's what you believe. Beauty is in the
- 25:51Speaker 5: eye of the beholder.
- 25:52Speaker 3: I would have taken them out. I would have taken
- 25:54Speaker 3: them out with one swing of a baseball bat if
- 25:57Speaker 3: they said that about you.
- 25:58Speaker 5: They're the one thing that they taught me and they
- 26:00Speaker 5: taught me well in life and growing up that I'm
- 26:02Speaker 5: very proud of.
- 26:03Speaker 3: But I don't have any ugly kids.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Oh, will you be quiet?
- 26:06Speaker 3: I don't.
- 26:07Speaker 5: They showed me the one thing they learned in.
- 26:09Speaker 3: What's that?
- 26:11Speaker 5: While being in action, fighting others and having to kill.
- 26:14Speaker 3: And so forth. But I'll tell you, if you've got
- 26:16Speaker 3: to come home to an ugly kid after four years.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Will you shut up?
- 26:21Speaker 3: You're telling me to shut up?
- 26:23Speaker 1: Yes, and let the lady finish if you come home
- 26:25Speaker 1: to an ugly kid after four years.
- 26:27Speaker 3: No, really, Bobby Bale, his child was born when Bobby
- 26:31Speaker 3: was overseas, see?
- 26:32Speaker 2: Yes.
- 26:33Speaker 3: And he come home, and there's the kid as ugly
- 26:35Speaker 3: as the day is long.
- 26:37Speaker 5: You know, sir, my sister, my younger sister was born
- 26:40Speaker 5: while my father was away, and he never got to
- 26:42Speaker 5: see her. And I think if he were to live
- 26:44Speaker 5: through that war, then he probably would have thought she
- 26:46Speaker 5: was the most beautiful thing.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 26:48Speaker 5: And that would be his opinion as a parent.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Yeah, but think of what it would have been like
- 26:52Speaker 3: had he made it through the war, only to come
- 26:53Speaker 3: home to a kid with ears like Dumbo.
- 26:56Speaker 5: You know, if he made it.
- 26:57Speaker 2: I'm sure the guy would have still be happy to
- 26:59Speaker 2: be alive.
- 27:00Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 27:01Speaker 4: He's not even alive, sir.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Bale told me he wished he would have taken a
- 27:03Speaker 3: Jap bayonet after he saw his kid.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Oh, come on.
- 27:06Speaker 6: Oh, my.
- 27:06Speaker 5: Please don't respect your military.
- 27:08Speaker 3: Background, sir. Well, that's what he said. He said he
- 27:10Speaker 3: wished he would have fallen on a grenade.
- 27:11Speaker 5: Sir, in my opinion, you are greatly disrespecting the military.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Oh, the guy is a mental case. Thank you very
- 27:17Speaker 1: much for your call. Good luck with the police, pal.
- 27:19Speaker 1: You're going to need it.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Well, that's why I called. Do you think you can
- 27:23Speaker 3: loan me the money for an attorney?
- 27:25Speaker 2: Sure, yeah. 1-800, you mean a good attorney, because I
- 27:30Speaker 2: know you don't want to do that public defender route,
- 27:32Speaker 2: is that right?
- 27:32Speaker 3: Oh, no, I don't want those lunkheads. They were born ugly.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Okay.
