- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update. It is a
- 0:05Speaker 1: soggy Sunday morning in Metro. I'm Brian Medore. A man
- 0:10Speaker 1: is in the lockup after somebody broke into a home
- 0:12Speaker 1: in the Center City area of St. John's overnight. The
- 0:15Speaker 1: homeowners knew the suspect, who fled the area before the
- 0:19Speaker 1: RNC arrived. Officers, including K-9, tracked him down. A 45-year-old
- 0:25Speaker 1: is awaiting charges of break-and-enter and breaching court orders. A
- 0:29Speaker 1: man whizzing down the highway at twice the posted speed
- 0:33Speaker 1: limit has lost his license and motorbike. RNC had the
- 0:37Speaker 1: radar set up on Team Guzhoo Highway yesterday, clocking a
- 0:40Speaker 1: rider going 160 in an 80k zone. Police also seized
- 0:46Speaker 1: the bike and ticketed him for excessive speed. The mayor
- 0:50Speaker 1: of St. John's says everyone is seeing growing public safety
- 0:54Speaker 1: concerns in the community. What they're not seeing, though, is
- 0:57Speaker 1: the collaboration needed among all three levels of government in
- 1:01Speaker 1: taking a compassionate yet serious approach to addressing the problem.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Open intravenous drug use, aggressive behavior, and vagrancy in public spaces,
- 1:10Speaker 1: once rare, has become commonplace. That's what's prompted Mayor Danny
- 1:15Speaker 1: Breen to reach out to the provincial and federal governments
- 1:18Speaker 1: looking for help in addressing the complex problem and restoring
- 1:22Speaker 1: a sense of public safety.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I do believe that we need to have a greater
- 1:26Speaker 2: police presence, not only in the downtown, but we need
- 1:30Speaker 2: a trail system. There's people now that are concerned about
- 1:34Speaker 2: walking in our trail system. We have people that go
- 1:37Speaker 2: and seek services, people that need assistance. So they go
- 1:42Speaker 2: and get a service in the morning, whether it's a
- 1:44Speaker 2: meal or whatever appointment. But what are they doing for
- 1:47Speaker 2: the rest of the day? What kind of programs are
- 1:49Speaker 2: available for the rest of the day?
- 1:52Speaker 1: The VOCM Cares Foundation Fall Cares for the Community 50-50
- 1:57Speaker 1: raffle is back. VOCM Cares Executive Director Janelle Lambert says
- 2:02Speaker 1: that although the sales often start slow, the jackpot is
- 2:06Speaker 1: at $ 1, 800 and plenty of time left to grow. Although
- 2:10Speaker 1: sales can be somewhat unpredictable, Lambert says the common trend
- 2:15Speaker 1: is for them to explode in the last 24 hours,
- 2:18Speaker 1: often climbing another $ 50, 000 to $ 70, 000. Last year, that exact
- 2:23Speaker 1: final push resulted in a jackpot of over $ 240, 000. Tickets
- 2:29Speaker 1: are on sale now until Tuesday, December 8th. Weather forecast, St.
- 2:34Speaker 1: John's Metro, rest of the Avalon, Clarenville. Rain this morning,
- 2:37Speaker 1: showers this afternoon. Easterly winds 30 or 40, temperature 17. Showers,
- 2:43Speaker 1: drizzle and fog tonight with light winds. Showers, light winds
- 2:46Speaker 1: and 18 on Monday. Central, 15 millimeters of rain today.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Rain tonight, winds 40 or 50 all the way through.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Temperature steady, 13. Monday, showers 16. South Coast, showers or
- 2:59Speaker 1: drizzle today. Winds gradually ease to light, high of 19.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Showers and light winds for tonight and Monday. And the

- 3:16Speaker 1: out on Monday. That's your news. I'm Brian Medor.
