- 0:00Speaker 1: We talked football in the state of Texas, both from
- 0:02Speaker 1: the collegiate in high school variety with Greg Tepper, managing
- 0:05Speaker 1: editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine.
- 0:07Speaker 2: He might be a young.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Man, but he has an old soul and he has
- 0:10Speaker 1: an appreciation for such Texas based music.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Do you not. Yeah, I don't think you can work
- 0:17Speaker 2: here without without that.
- 0:18Speaker 3: That's kind of part of the vetting process when you're
- 0:22Speaker 3: interviewing with Dave Campbell's Texas Football. Is there just you know,
- 0:25Speaker 3: ask your general opinion on a lot of Texas artists.
- 0:28Speaker 3: So yeah, I think that that that's a that's an
- 0:30Speaker 3: important and important part of the Texana ness of being here.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Dave Campbell's all right, So here's another important thing. This
- 0:37Speaker 1: is how we know that football is reaching its critical
- 0:41Speaker 1: mass element when if anybody that goes to the Texas
- 0:44Speaker 1: Football website at Texas Football dot com and you read
- 0:48Speaker 1: Corey Hoag's breakdown on tiebreaker scenarios in Division three. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 0:56Speaker 1: with the with the American Southwest Conference and the Southern
- 1:00Speaker 1: Athletic Association's that's some pretty intense stuff he's getting into
- 1:03Speaker 1: because it actually kind of mirrors what happens in Texas
- 1:06Speaker 1: high school football tie breaks.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Yeah, it is, and we are getting into that territory
- 1:13Speaker 3: now where you know, there's a lot of talk obviously
- 1:16Speaker 3: about Texas and A and M and stuff like that,
- 1:18Speaker 3: but it's important to remember that here Dave Campbell's we
- 1:20Speaker 3: cover all forty eight college football teams across the state
- 1:23Speaker 3: of Texas. So yes, Trinity's big win over Barry this
- 1:26Speaker 3: past week was significant. And by the way, if you
- 1:30Speaker 3: look on Texas Football dot Com and you take a
- 1:32Speaker 3: look at our heat in decks where we rank the
- 1:35Speaker 3: forty eight college football teams in the state of Texas,
- 1:38Speaker 3: you will notice that the number one team is in
- 1:40Speaker 3: Texas or Texas A and M, or even a team
- 1:42Speaker 3: like SMU or even a team like Angelo State. No,
- 1:45Speaker 3: it's Hardened Simmons. Hardened Simmons is fifteen fourteen to one
- 1:49Speaker 3: of their last fifteen games, and the Cowboys are rolling.
- 1:51Speaker 3: So yeah, you know, we cover football, you know, stem
- 1:54Speaker 3: to stern, and I know that Corey Hoague is really
- 1:57Speaker 3: the tip of the spear when it comes to the
- 1:58Speaker 3: non FBS side of it, and he's got his hands
- 2:01Speaker 3: full this time of year because Texas has got some
- 2:04Speaker 3: real good depth of talent outside of the FBS ranks
- 2:08Speaker 3: and within the FBS ranks.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Talking to football here in the lone Star state with
- 2:14Speaker 1: Greg Temper, let's keep it in the college room for
- 2:16Speaker 1: a moment. I say this tongue in cheek. Nobody's done
- 2:21Speaker 1: a mental health check on Jeff Trailer this week after
- 2:25Speaker 1: they had a thirty five to seven third quarter lead
- 2:27Speaker 1: get away at Tulsan and los forty six to forty five,
- 2:31Speaker 1: and it was forty two seventeen, wasn't it with about
- 2:34Speaker 1: six minutes to go in the third quarter.
- 2:36Speaker 3: You know, I was thinking about this because one of
- 2:39Speaker 3: the things about Jeff Trailer is that obviously he's done
- 2:43Speaker 3: fantastic stuff there at at UTSA, but I would be
- 2:49Speaker 3: hard pressed to find the last time he had kind
- 2:55Speaker 3: of a losing season as a whole, because you know,
- 3:00Speaker 3: you go back to even his his high school football
- 3:02Speaker 3: days where he was absolutely sensational. I mean, he's forty
- 3:06Speaker 3: two and nineteen as a college football head coach. He's
- 3:08Speaker 3: never had a losing record at UTSA, And then you
- 3:13Speaker 3: go back to his head coaching days when he was
- 3:15Speaker 3: at Gilmer, never had a losing record there, and he's
- 3:18Speaker 3: been coached. He's been a head coach since two thousand,
- 3:21Speaker 3: obviously a stop at Staff's at Texas and SMU in
- 3:24Speaker 3: Arkansas before that. But for Jeff Trailer, this is this
- 3:28Speaker 3: is un this is territory that he is not trodden
- 3:33Speaker 3: down at all, simply because you know, the road Runner
- 3:35Speaker 3: are struggling. We wondered what they were gonna look like
- 3:37Speaker 3: without Frank Harris. Obviously they're still trying to figure that out.
- 3:40Speaker 3: But but it was the defense that really let them
- 3:42Speaker 3: down this year. But it's just it springs to mind
- 3:45Speaker 3: like this is a guy who's not used to losing.
- 3:47Speaker 3: And I would imagine I haven't texted him recently, but
- 3:51Speaker 3: I would imagine he's not particularly enjoying it in that regard.
- 3:55Speaker 3: I think he probably prefers the whole winning state championships
- 3:58Speaker 3: and conference championships part of Well.
- 4:00Speaker 1: He'll certainly be reminded of that next next May when
- 4:04Speaker 1: he's inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame.
- 4:07Speaker 2: That's that's for sure, and well deserved of that.
- 4:12Speaker 1: The keeping this in the states take You called this,
- 4:15Speaker 1: You called this weeks ago. You called this before the
- 4:17Speaker 1: start of the season. You said, Mike Bloomgren's job was
- 4:21Speaker 1: definitely going to be on the line at Rice, and
- 4:24Speaker 1: it ended up with Rice making the change. Seven years
- 4:29Speaker 1: there in charge of the Alice got into a couple
- 4:31Speaker 1: of bowl games but never had a winning record. That's
- 4:34Speaker 1: that weird dynamic that can happen when because of their academics,
- 4:38Speaker 1: which is so good, they were able to land Bullberts
- 4:41Speaker 1: at five and seven records and then losing the bowl game,
- 4:44Speaker 1: or even when win still having the the losing record,
- 4:48Speaker 1: and it's.
- 4:49Speaker 2: That's a tough job. It's just it's just a tough job,
- 4:51Speaker 2: isn't it. My My my colleague Mike Craven, I think
- 4:55Speaker 2: put it really well.
- 4:56Speaker 3: He said that he raised the floor at Rice, but
- 4:59Speaker 3: he never on the ceiling, which is probably the truth.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I mean, you think BacT David Bailiff was able to
- 5:05Speaker 3: win conference championships there back in the earlier earlier part
- 5:08Speaker 3: of the century.
- 5:09Speaker 2: You know, you can win there.
- 5:11Speaker 3: But but I would make the argument to you that
- 5:14Speaker 3: Rice may be the toughest FBS head coaching job in Texas.
- 5:20Speaker 3: You know, I think people might look at a place
- 5:21Speaker 3: like UTEP obviously way out there in West Texas and
- 5:25Speaker 3: certainly has not been the kind of powerhouse that they
- 5:29Speaker 3: would like to be. But I would make the argument
- 5:31Speaker 3: to you that at UTEP you are theoretically drawing from
- 5:35Speaker 3: a larger talent pool than you are at Rice. Because
- 5:38Speaker 3: at Rice, because of the academic standards, you are already
- 5:42Speaker 3: cutting the number of players that you can recruit by
- 5:46Speaker 3: sixty percent, by seventy percent. And then, by the way,
- 5:49Speaker 3: you're gonna have to fend off all the other teams
- 5:51Speaker 3: that want to get these guys who are high academic
- 5:53Speaker 3: achievers and also happen to be excellent at football.
- 5:56Speaker 2: It's a tough it's a tough thing.
- 5:57Speaker 3: And and and you know, I like Bloomgrim. He's a
- 6:00Speaker 3: guy that that we really got to know here at
- 6:02Speaker 3: Dave Campbell's a guy who I think really ingratiated himself
- 6:05Speaker 3: to the tech to Texas culture.
- 6:07Speaker 2: He's not a Texan. I mean, he came folks who
- 6:09Speaker 2: don't remember he was.
- 6:10Speaker 3: He was the offic coordinator at Stanford, which felt like
- 6:13Speaker 3: just a real natural fit to go from Stanford to Rice.
- 6:16Speaker 3: I do wonder where they go from here. I I
- 6:20Speaker 3: know we've got a job board up on Texas football
- 6:23Speaker 3: dot Com of guys who who could be that guy Uh.
- 6:26Speaker 3: But but I would say that you know, you look for.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Uh, I'm I'm.
- 6:30Speaker 3: I'm of the belief of the the ex girlfriend theory
- 6:33Speaker 3: that like when you break up with somebody, you go
- 6:35Speaker 3: for somebody exactly the opposite, And so I would look
- 6:38Speaker 3: for a defensive minded person with with good Texas ties,
- 6:43Speaker 3: deep Texas ties, and maybe they've got one on their
- 6:46Speaker 3: staff and former North Shore head coach John k uh
- 6:49Speaker 3: that's certainly a guy who's who's uh, but who has
- 6:52Speaker 3: succeeded at the highest level of Texas high school football
- 6:54Speaker 3: before jumping to the Rice staff. We'll see it is
- 6:57Speaker 3: a new offensive coordinate or a new athletic director there.
- 7:00Speaker 3: So I wonder if he's going to want to make
- 7:01Speaker 3: his own his his his statement and had put his
- 7:04Speaker 3: stamp on the program. So uh, it stinks because because
- 7:07Speaker 3: we've gotten a no bloom and we think he's he's
- 7:09Speaker 3: a good dude, and I thought he did some really
- 7:11Speaker 3: good things at Rice, but playing simple is a hard
- 7:13Speaker 3: place to win.
- 7:13Speaker 2: He didn't do enough of it.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I find it interesting on Mike Craven's piece where he
- 7:18Speaker 1: breaks it down into the categories of big swing, realistic,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and wildcard. The wildcard he mentioned you were just talking
- 7:27Speaker 1: about John k And and you know, I was thinking
- 7:29Speaker 1: about John and I thought, if if he doesn't land
- 7:33Speaker 1: an opportunity, uh to land on a collegiate staff somewhere.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Obviously there the line of schools, high schools in Texas
- 7:42Speaker 1: I would love to hire him would be long. Uh,
- 7:44Speaker 1: They'd love to have him back at the high school
- 7:47Speaker 1: level if it happens that way. The big swing thing
- 7:50Speaker 1: Casey Keeler, of course has done a good job at
- 7:52Speaker 1: at at Sam Houston.
- 7:53Speaker 2: He's going to have him in a bowl game this year.
- 7:55Speaker 1: And then will Stein, I mean, gosh, I just I'm
- 7:58Speaker 1: just remembering will Stein Reese la'zy the offensive corner at
- 8:01Speaker 1: Lake Travis and now our heres the offensive coordinator for
- 8:03Speaker 1: the number one college football team in the country at Oregon,
- 8:07Speaker 1: and a guy that could be it could be a
- 8:09Speaker 1: really big boost for them if he's if he feels
- 8:11Speaker 1: he's ready for his first head coaching job. I mean,
- 8:14Speaker 1: he's he's thirty five, so he would be one of
- 8:17Speaker 1: the younger coaches in college football. But at the same time,
- 8:20Speaker 1: he's already established himself as one of the most the
- 8:23Speaker 1: most well known and respected minds in offensively. Uh, in
- 8:27Speaker 1: college football obviously leading you know Oregon's offense right now.
- 8:32Speaker 1: We'll see because there may be maybe one of those
- 8:35Speaker 1: things where bigger offers may come down the pike for him,
- 8:38Speaker 1: and so would he go to jump to Rice to
- 8:41Speaker 1: get back to Texas?
- 8:42Speaker 2: That would be something interesting here.
- 8:44Speaker 3: I look at a guy maybe like Tim Beck, not
- 8:46Speaker 3: that Tim Beck, the other Tim Beck, uh the first
- 8:50Speaker 3: year offensive coordinator Vanderbilt, who could be the guy. He's
- 8:53Speaker 3: a guy who's got ties to Vanderbilt because because.
- 8:56Speaker 2: His his Tommy McCallum, the new athletic director, came from Vanderbilt.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Another guy Vanderbilt ties is Derek Mason if he wants
- 9:04Speaker 3: to get back in the head coaching job.
- 9:05Speaker 2: That's a name to know.
- 9:06Speaker 3: And then another name to throw out there is Tyler Santucci.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Tyler Santucci is the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, which
- 9:14Speaker 3: obviously high academic standards there. He used to be the
- 9:18Speaker 3: co defensive coordinator at Texas A and M, so he's
- 9:20Speaker 3: got some ties there. It'll be interesting to see where
- 9:23Speaker 3: Rice lands, because there's there's a a fit that you
- 9:26Speaker 3: have to understand what you're getting into and understand the
- 9:31Speaker 3: the unique nature of the Rice job, and we'll see
- 9:34Speaker 3: which direction that Tommy mcclon decides to go.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Uh.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Talking football in the state of Texas, Greg Tepper from
- 9:40Speaker 1: Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Right, let's shift to high school.
- 9:43Speaker 1: And uh, you know, I joked the other night when
- 9:47Speaker 1: I was doing the zoom thing with you guys about
- 9:51Speaker 1: the line from the Who song you know we won't
- 9:52Speaker 1: get fooled again. Meet the new ball, same as the
- 9:55Speaker 1: old boss. Ah. I think that certainly applies to Northshore
- 9:59Speaker 1: finding a way to be a task ASDA off of that,
- 10:02Speaker 1: and then b to get to your state wide rankings.
- 10:08Speaker 1: And looky, looky, look who's back at number one in
- 10:11Speaker 1: the state and five A Division two for you be
- 10:13Speaker 1: those South Oakliff Golden Bears.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Two losses notwithstanding, yeah, more the more things changed, more
- 10:20Speaker 3: they stay the same. And and certainly, you know, you
- 10:22Speaker 3: look at north Shore and the Task Asda and it
- 10:24Speaker 3: was a heart stopping game, the game the kind of
- 10:27Speaker 3: game we anticipated seeing from these two teams. And I
- 10:30Speaker 3: might I've been working on this and rolling around in
- 10:34Speaker 3: my head. I could be convinced that those are the
- 10:36Speaker 3: two best teams in six A this year and therefore
- 10:38Speaker 3: the two best teams in the state is a Task
- 10:39Speaker 3: in north Shore. Uh And it was a fantastic ball
- 10:43Speaker 3: game that we may get another time, we may get
- 10:46Speaker 3: in a regional final. And remember Northshore has now beaten
- 10:48Speaker 3: a task ASDA nine times in a row, which is
- 10:52Speaker 3: just inconceivable considering how good a task ASDA has been.
- 10:57Speaker 2: And then yeah, you had five a Division two.
- 10:59Speaker 3: You know, first of all, a moment for Nederland head
- 11:03Speaker 3: coach Scott Rich in his first year there at Nederland
- 11:06Speaker 3: has goes and gets the biggest win for Nederland in.
- 11:12Speaker 2: A decade plus.
- 11:13Speaker 3: I mean, to go on the road to your arch
- 11:16Speaker 3: rival and as according to the computer, a twenty one
- 11:21Speaker 3: point underdog, to go out there and knock off the
- 11:24Speaker 3: reigning state champs. I mean, I've never been the most
- 11:27Speaker 3: I've never been the most popular person in any town.
- 11:30Speaker 3: So I wonder how Scott Rich feels, because that is,
- 11:33Speaker 3: he could run for mayor right now his election season
- 11:36Speaker 3: and he would win with one hundred percent of the
- 11:38Speaker 3: vote in Nederland right now. But as a result with
- 11:42Speaker 3: PNG losing, and certainly there were signs of cracks in
- 11:46Speaker 3: that foundation a little bit that I think Nederland did
- 11:48Speaker 3: a good job of exposing. Now we'll be up to
- 11:50Speaker 3: Jeff Joseph to make sure that they shore up before
- 11:52Speaker 3: the playoffs. But as a result they they tumbled down
- 11:55Speaker 3: to number nine and back up to the number one spot.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Is South o'cliff, a team that of course took their
- 12:00Speaker 3: lumps early, taking on you know, North Shore and Duncanville before,
- 12:04Speaker 3: you know for getting things together, But it's one of
- 12:06Speaker 3: those North is one of those teams that we kind
- 12:08Speaker 3: of forget about for about seven weeks because they're just
- 12:10Speaker 3: a lot better than their district. Lbj kind of fits
- 12:13Speaker 3: into that category two of a team that, like we
- 12:15Speaker 3: paid attention to the non district they again the district
- 12:17Speaker 3: play was like okay, we'll see you like the second
- 12:18Speaker 3: round of the playoffs. But it's important to note that
- 12:21Speaker 3: for both Lbjim and for South Oak Left, they're playing
- 12:24Speaker 3: exceptional ball right now and certainly worthy of your attention
- 12:27Speaker 3: when the playoff brackets come out in a near.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Ten days or so.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Mm hmmm, uh fill in the blank for me on
- 12:34Speaker 1: this one, shy of state championship week, the biggest threat
- 12:41Speaker 1: to Duncanville in the postseason would be I would say,
- 12:50Speaker 1: probably in a semi final matchup with North Crowley that
- 12:53Speaker 1: probably looks like the biggest threat to them. But I
- 12:57Speaker 1: will also say that you know, if you are of THELF,
- 13:00Speaker 1: that Duncanville is a really good team, but not a
- 13:03Speaker 1: world beater. I think that there are some teams within
- 13:06Speaker 1: Region two that can give them a challenge. I think
- 13:10Speaker 1: if they were to run into a team like Bridgeland,
- 13:12Speaker 1: I'm very interested to see what would happen there, because Bridgeland,
- 13:15Speaker 1: I think, can go score for score with them. I'm
- 13:17Speaker 1: interested in a team like the Woodlands, which could give
- 13:20Speaker 1: them some challenge. But I think that most likely you
- 13:23Speaker 1: would probably look at the team to come out of
- 13:25Speaker 1: Region one, likely North Crowley, maybe a team like Allen.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Maybe a team I don't think cup Hell can match
- 13:31Speaker 1: up with well with Duncanville, but North Crowley certainly could
- 13:34Speaker 1: from a firepower perspective. Outside of a state championship game,
- 13:38Speaker 1: then yeah, I think for Duncanville, their biggest threat would
- 13:40Speaker 1: come in a state semifinal against the winner of Region one,
- 13:44Speaker 1: probably North Crowley, but maybe Allen.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Okay, all right, now fill in this playing for me.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Without question, the team that poses the biggest threat to
- 13:54Speaker 1: De Soto in sixth A Division two, regardless of region is.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Oh boy, I think De Soto faces a significant challenge
- 14:06Speaker 3: almost every step of the way, starting essentially in the
- 14:10Speaker 3: third round. You could have a third round matchup with Willis,
- 14:13Speaker 3: and I'll tell you that if you think Willis was
- 14:15Speaker 3: just DJ Lagway, you should go see what they're doing
- 14:18Speaker 3: right now. This is arguably a better, more complete Willis
- 14:22Speaker 3: team that they could see Thanksgiving weekend. You follow that
- 14:25Speaker 3: up with maybe a matchup with a team like Longview
- 14:27Speaker 3: or Spring Westfield, which is not gonna be a pushover.
- 14:29Speaker 3: And then in a semi final, they could see a
- 14:31Speaker 3: team like South Lake Carrol, they could see a team
- 14:33Speaker 3: like prosper There are a lot I think there's a
- 14:37Speaker 3: lot of land mines for De Soto. And then if
- 14:39Speaker 3: they were to make it to another state championship game,
- 14:42Speaker 3: you think they could see a team like Westlake, or
- 14:46Speaker 3: you think Summer Creek would like another shot at Desto.
- 14:48Speaker 3: I think what happened last year where they got they
- 14:50Speaker 3: got demolished in front of a national audience. Oh yeah,
- 14:54Speaker 3: Summer Creek, which has looked exceptional oh year long, and
- 14:56Speaker 3: took a task see into the wire they would love
- 14:59Speaker 3: an other shot at the Soto. So I think the
- 15:02Speaker 3: Division two bracket actually after kind of very desperately from
- 15:08Speaker 3: last year where the sixth A Division two felt like
- 15:10Speaker 3: they're real, Like, okay, it's kind of the Soto or
- 15:13Speaker 3: versus the field. I think Division two has a chance
- 15:16Speaker 3: to be the more entertaining six A bracket simply because
- 15:19Speaker 3: of the challengers to the Soto team that is still
- 15:24Speaker 3: very good and certainly worthy of being the team to beat,
- 15:27Speaker 3: but I think is gettable when the playoffs roll around.
- 15:30Speaker 1: All right, let me throw some games at you, and
- 15:34Speaker 1: you pick one, and you tell me which one that
- 15:36Speaker 1: you would most like to be at. You could choose
- 15:40Speaker 1: between Lancaster Waksatchi, you could choose between College Station and Weiss,
- 15:48Speaker 1: or you could have Graham Brock.
- 15:51Speaker 2: What would you do?
- 15:54Speaker 3: It's probably oh man, I'll tell you what what I
- 15:58Speaker 3: would probably do is do the the the double dip,
- 16:02Speaker 3: because I believe College Station Weiss is on the Thursday
- 16:04Speaker 3: night of the field, so I might go there first
- 16:07Speaker 3: because I'm really interested in this game, because uh, this
- 16:10Speaker 3: is for a home playoff game. Assuming game of consolidated
- 16:13Speaker 3: wins that district. The winner of this game gets a
- 16:15Speaker 3: home playoff game. And for Weiss, the growth of Jackson Shadd,
- 16:19Speaker 3: their freshman quarterback, is remarkable. It's important to remember that
- 16:24Speaker 3: we thought like Weiss had a chance to be really
- 16:26Speaker 3: good until their senior quarterback got hurt in the in
- 16:29Speaker 3: the in the scrimmage.
- 16:30Speaker 2: And we were like, okay, well nice year, wis sorry.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Instead, Jackson Chad has really taken the reins and played
- 16:35Speaker 3: exceptionally well. Going up against the college station team that
- 16:38Speaker 3: has looked to the part basically outside of a rivalry,
- 16:40Speaker 3: lost to a consolidated of a of one of the
- 16:43Speaker 3: teams to be huge game there. But then I think
- 16:45Speaker 3: it's Graham and Brock is the answer to the question
- 16:48Speaker 3: simply because this is a brought for Brock there.
- 16:51Speaker 2: This is their big test as a four A program.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Uh And this is also the number one versus number
- 16:58Speaker 3: two scoring defenses in for A Division two. Graham's the
- 17:01Speaker 3: number one scoring defense in four Division two. Brock is
- 17:04Speaker 3: the number two scoring defense. These two teams are going
- 17:06Speaker 3: to lay the lumber at one another. It is going
