Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: It's their Happy Family's podcast.
- 0:05Speaker 2: My name is Nicol Montoya.
- 0:08Speaker 3: You killed my father, Prepared to die ha, and the
- 0:13Speaker 3: oscar goes to.
- 0:16Speaker 2: My mom and dad. It's Justin Colson here with Kylie,
- 0:21Speaker 2: my wife, mum to our six kids, and founder of
- 0:24Speaker 2: Happy Families dot com dot are you? That's me, not you,
- 0:26Speaker 2: You're the mum. I'm the founder. Just need to clarify that.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I'm so excited for today's podcast. I have no idea
- 0:32Speaker 2: how this is going to work. I've got like this
- 0:34Speaker 2: may be the world's most boring podcast, but I can't
- 0:37Speaker 2: wait to talk about it.
- 0:38Speaker 4: Well, I'm interested to see how we make this the
- 0:41Speaker 4: podcast for the time poor parent, because I'm looking at
- 0:43Speaker 4: my list and I'm a little bit worried.
- 0:46Speaker 2: You've got about three hours worth of content for a
- 0:49Speaker 2: twelve minute podcast. We have a tradition in our home.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Actually we used to. We don't do it very much anymore.
- 0:54Speaker 2: We kind of get busy and go our separate ways,
- 0:57Speaker 2: and every now and again, though, we get really fok
- 1:00Speaker 2: and say we're going to have a movie night movie lights.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Like this family tradition everyone talks about. Everyone does it
- 1:05Speaker 2: at some point in their families. Trajectory or growth, and
- 1:09Speaker 2: we used to do it all the time. We'd have
- 1:11Speaker 2: like Friday night pizza movie, that sort of stuff. And
- 1:14Speaker 2: just recently we sat down with the kids and watched
- 1:16Speaker 2: Luca on Disney Plus and oh my goodness, it was
- 1:20Speaker 2: just gorgeous.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Albertodrom Beta, it's a human thing.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I'm kind of an expert.
- 1:28Speaker 4: So we've divided it up into kids under twelve and
- 1:31Speaker 4: kids over twelve.
- 1:33Speaker 3: It's a really big yeah.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Yeah, bearing in mind that kid's under twelve, huge developmental difference.
- 1:38Speaker 2: And just because a movie that we put in this
- 1:40Speaker 2: list is for kids under twelve doesn't mean that it's
- 1:42Speaker 2: for a three year old or even your seven year old.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Necessarily is parental guidance needed. Yeah.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Every family's got their own standards, their own ideas about
- 1:50Speaker 2: what age of child should be before they get to watch
- 1:52Speaker 2: a movie and how they might be exposed to scary
- 1:55Speaker 2: content or other forms of content, and so we want
- 1:59Speaker 2: to leave that to you. But we're just excited to
- 2:03Speaker 2: go through our list. So for our little kids, that
- 2:06Speaker 2: is our under twelves. How do you want to do this?
- 2:08Speaker 2: Do you want to do one each or do you
- 2:10Speaker 2: just want to go through you just want to go
- 2:11Speaker 2: through your list. You're so you do it? No, no, no,
- 2:13Speaker 2: no no, after you please, ladies before John?
- 2:15Speaker 3: Oh is that right? You see? If you can top
- 2:16Speaker 3: my list? Is that what you're going to do?
- 2:18Speaker 2: What's your what's on your list? How many are you
- 2:20Speaker 2: going to give us?
- 2:21Speaker 3: I'll start with five?
- 2:22Speaker 2: Oh gosh, I'm not going to have time for my
- 2:25Speaker 2: list at all. Maybe you've got some on your list
- 2:28Speaker 2: that I have on mine anyway, and we can tick
- 2:29Speaker 2: them off together.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Okay, Well, I'm thinking of cartoons to start with, because
- 2:33Speaker 4: there's some brilliant cartoons out there.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:36Speaker 4: And I can't have a top one. Honestly, I can't
- 2:39Speaker 4: say this is in list of any order.
- 2:41Speaker 2: This is just sure. So these are just films that
- 2:43Speaker 2: you should watch with your kids. Maybe. I mean it's Thursday, right,
- 2:46Speaker 2: Tomorrow is the weekend. Well, tomorrow night, it's the weekend.
- 2:50Speaker 2: So maybe we'll inspire some high quality movie night watching
- 2:54Speaker 2: with Kylie's list.
- 2:56Speaker 3: I'm even chasing the list as I'm I'm thinking if you.
- 2:59Speaker 4: Just get on with the everyone's like, come on, okay,
- 3:02Speaker 4: so I loved Monsters, inc.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Okay, people East and Seaboard, coming on, light scared coming out.
- 3:12Speaker 3: I thought it was just adorable.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Loved it. Yeah, make Lazowski Lawski. I just my favorite
- 3:20Speaker 2: character is the woman behind the desk.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I'm watching you was asky watching that?
- 3:30Speaker 4: She's just dead pan, isn't she. I just think it's
- 3:33Speaker 4: such a delightful twist. You know, kids are often scared
- 3:37Speaker 4: of monsters, and the whole idea behind this beautiful, big,
- 3:42Speaker 4: cuddly Sully and his desire to, you know, make kids
- 3:47Speaker 4: lives happier.
- 3:48Speaker 3: I just love it. I think it's gorgeous.
- 3:50Speaker 2: But then you've got Randall as well, and this is
- 3:52Speaker 2: a movie that gives you the opportunity to talk to
- 3:54Speaker 2: your kids about how it's not about how you look,
- 3:57Speaker 2: it's about what's in your heart. I'm with you. I
- 4:00Speaker 2: didn't have Monster Zinc on my list, but what an
- 4:03Speaker 2: absolute delight. What was next on your list? Brother?
- 4:06Speaker 1: Bear to body, I was saving this story for the
- 4:11Speaker 1: Salmon Run, but I'll tell you it was probably your
- 4:15Speaker 1: fifth or sixth most my entire life.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Oh this sounds good.
- 4:20Speaker 1: You should definitely save it, you think, so, oh yeah,
- 4:23Speaker 1: for your friends.
- 4:24Speaker 4: I don't think it's a particularly popular movie, but I
- 4:28Speaker 4: just love it. Again, it's this quest to right wrongs,
- 4:36Speaker 4: only to realize that you're actually part of the problem.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Brother Bear. That wasn't on my list, But I can
- 4:42Speaker 2: rewrite my lists. I can put that on there again.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Comic Relief. I mean, it's a really serious movie about
- 4:48Speaker 2: forgiveness and writing wrongs, like you said. But my favorite
- 4:52Speaker 2: characters and it's one of the two what are they like?
- 4:54Speaker 2: I was going to say the two Antelope?
- 4:56Speaker 5: Oh yeah, he's actually the squirrel and I'm more of
- 4:59Speaker 5: a you were bred wolverine.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Look at these husbands. I think we should watch it
- 5:04Speaker 2: this weekend. I really really like Brother Bear. What's your
- 5:07Speaker 2: third one?
- 5:08Speaker 3: Finding Nemo Somewhere.
- 5:13Speaker 1: The scene.
- 5:14Speaker 4: What I love about Finding Nemo is here's this little
- 5:18Speaker 4: kid who, because he has a little defect, has been
- 5:22Speaker 4: held back for so long.
- 5:23Speaker 3: His dad is so scared to learnm out in the
- 5:25Speaker 3: big wide world.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Nema, it's not seen, Nema.
- 5:31Speaker 2: No, you're about to swim and open water.
- 5:35Speaker 4: And yet when he is defiant essentially and he does
- 5:40Speaker 4: go on this really scary journey, he recognizes and so
- 5:44Speaker 4: does his dad, that there is so.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Much potential within capability. Yeah, and it was It's so empowering.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I've never thought of finding Nemo before in this light.
- 5:52Speaker 2: But you've just said it, and you use the word
- 5:54Speaker 2: defect because he had that the little fin, the little
- 5:57Speaker 2: fin that wasn't right, And I'm certainly not using that
- 6:00Speaker 2: word in this context in any way, shape or form.
- 6:03Speaker 2: We talk regularly. I'm always talking with parents whose children
- 6:07Speaker 2: are neurodivergent, and in some ways they could be a
- 6:11Speaker 2: little bit like Nemo. There's something about them that makes
- 6:15Speaker 2: them that little bit different. They don't quite get on
- 6:17Speaker 2: in the world the same way that everybody else does,
- 6:20Speaker 2: and yet they have so much capability. And I've just
- 6:22Speaker 2: just as you said that, I've thought to myself, what
- 6:24Speaker 2: a what a beautiful lesson, what a great movie to
- 6:27Speaker 2: talk to any child, but particularly those who are neurodivergent,
- 6:32Speaker 2: about how their differences don't make them any less capable. Yeah, okay,
- 6:40Speaker 2: so do I.
- 6:40Speaker 3: So justin the Cube, it looks over the Maluskin says,
- 6:44Speaker 3: with friends like these, who needs anemonies?
- 6:48Speaker 2: What else have you got?
- 6:49Speaker 4: These two are side by side because I can't. I
- 6:51Speaker 4: can't separate them. I love Milant and I love Brave.
- 6:54Speaker 2: They're good. I wouldn't put them on my wouldn't put
- 6:57Speaker 2: them on my list.
- 7:00Speaker 3: All right, tell me your listen.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Have you got anymore?
- 7:02Speaker 3: Well, I've got heaps.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Are you serious?
- 7:04Speaker 3: Yeah, go for it.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It's to be five, that's right. So I'll let you
- 7:07Speaker 2: have your five brother or what else I've just got
- 7:09Speaker 2: to hear. Let's just run through them.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Oh so you can pull my list apast. Let's just
- 7:13Speaker 3: let's just look. I loved the Moana. I loved it again.
- 7:16Speaker 2: So what you're saying is, if you've got kids under twelve,
- 7:18Speaker 2: just watch the entire Disney back of course.
- 7:22Speaker 3: All right, there's so many good movies.
- 7:24Speaker 4: The Lego movie we have to we have to have
- 7:26Speaker 4: an honorable mention for the Lego Movie, completely outside the
- 7:29Speaker 4: realm of anything I would normally watch, and I.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Did not want to like it, but I just loved it.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I want to tell you that I hated it, But
- 7:37Speaker 2: right now you've just put an earworm into my head
- 7:40Speaker 2: and all I want to do is say everything is.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Awesome, everything's gone, and you're part of the team like us.
- 7:49Speaker 2: So basically, it's not just Disney now, it's anything animated.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Oh yeah, wreck itt Ralph Tarzan. There's so many poker Honts.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Who can Pokahontas do you know what's into that we've gone.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Up with all of these movies.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Our kids used to call it ponker Hontas. Can we
- 8:04Speaker 2: watch pore Honts?
- 8:06Speaker 3: And our seven year old hasn't watched half of these movies.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Yeah, all the big kids have seen them, but the
- 8:10Speaker 2: little Yeah yeah, all right, this weekend at Disney an
- 8:14Speaker 2: marathon movie marathon. Really maybe maybe after the break, I'm
- 8:20Speaker 2: going to give you a slightly more diverse idea of
- 8:24Speaker 2: movies for primary school kids. It's the Happy Families Podcast.
- 8:29Speaker 6: Imagine a home where discipline got results without anyone having
- 8:32Speaker 6: to feel bad or in trouble. The Do's and don'ts
- 8:34Speaker 6: of Discipline as a webinar to help parents set limits
- 8:37Speaker 6: with love, compassion and humanity. Find it now at happy
- 8:41Speaker 6: families dot com, dot au slash shop.
- 8:44Speaker 4: It's the Happy Families Podcast, the podcast for the time
- 8:46Speaker 4: poor parent who's probably a little.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Bit more time poor.
- 8:49Speaker 4: After our first attempt at sharing some of our favorite
- 8:53Speaker 4: movies for kids under.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Twelve, I feel like you've kind of given a kids
- 8:56Speaker 2: under eight rather than kids under twelve. I've got another list, right, Well,
- 9:02Speaker 2: I'm going to give you my list because I feel
- 9:05Speaker 2: i'm feeling like.
- 9:05Speaker 3: You're going to give all the good ones. Yes, because
- 9:08Speaker 3: I gave them to you.
- 9:09Speaker 2: My number one for kids, you didn't give them to me.
- 9:16Speaker 3: I'm the movie buff in the house and you're not.
- 9:18Speaker 2: My number one movie for kids in primary school is
- 9:22Speaker 2: The Princess Bride.
- 9:24Speaker 4: I don't think I'm quite familiar with her phrase.
- 9:26Speaker 2: I'll explain, and I'll use small words that you'll be
- 9:29Speaker 2: sure to understand. You war tug faced buffoon.
- 9:33Speaker 3: The Princess Bride.
- 9:35Speaker 4: You know that that is the That is your absolute,
- 9:37Speaker 4: hands down favorite movie ever.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Ask me why I'm smiling.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Why are you smiling?
- 9:42Speaker 2: Because I know something you don't know. Oh, and what
- 9:45Speaker 2: is that? I am not left hand. I'm not left
- 9:48Speaker 2: handed either. You have the scene.
- 9:50Speaker 3: I do know the scene.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Don't ask me the whole movie. If every now and
- 9:55Speaker 2: again I bump into somebody who has not watched The
- 9:56Speaker 2: Princess Bride, the whole movie is simply outstanding.
- 10:00Speaker 3: There's my name is amigo.
- 10:02Speaker 2: My name is a Montoya. It's not a migo, it's indigo.
- 10:07Speaker 2: My name is Nigel Montoya.
- 10:09Speaker 3: You killed my father, prepare to die?
- 10:12Speaker 2: Offer me money?
- 10:14Speaker 6: Yes?
- 10:15Speaker 2: Oh gosh, so that was my number one my number two,
- 10:21Speaker 2: The Greatest Showman. How did you know? I was going
- 10:23Speaker 2: to say that?
- 10:24Speaker 3: How did you know? I was literally about to say
- 10:26Speaker 3: that it's my favorite?
- 10:28Speaker 2: You didn't. You didn't say it. You don't get the
- 10:30Speaker 2: credit for it. The Greatest Showman. This is the ultimate
- 10:32Speaker 2: sing along movie.
- 10:38Speaker 3: It literally pushed High School Musical off the charts.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I had High School Musical as an honorable mention.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Yeah, and it is really good. But The Greatest Showman. Wow,
- 10:48Speaker 3: what a movie.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I've got The Sandlot Kids. Yeah, no, really, no, that's harsh.
- 10:55Speaker 2: I can't believe you just said and dismissed it out
- 10:57Speaker 2: of hand.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Totally.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I love The Sandlot Kids.
- 11:00Speaker 3: How old are you?
- 11:00Speaker 2: That's rough? Yeah, I guess I am. Well, my next
- 11:04Speaker 2: two are even older. I'm going with the sound of music.
- 11:10Speaker 2: I was about to start singing.
- 11:12Speaker 3: A deer, a female deer, A drop of golden sun?
- 11:17Speaker 3: Are you not going to see anyone?
- 11:19Speaker 2: No? No, no, I'm going to let j out put
- 11:21Speaker 2: the music in. From there, I hope we started on
- 11:24Speaker 2: the right long well, and I'm just going to mention
- 11:31Speaker 2: Mary Poppins super fragilistic, even though the sound of it
- 11:36Speaker 2: is something quite a cruisyeah Oh, wow, you seem unhappy
- 11:41Speaker 2: with you.
- 11:41Speaker 3: No, it's it's good. It is good. But there are
- 11:44Speaker 3: so many others. Just we haven't we haven't mentioned spirit,
- 11:48Speaker 3: and so.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I grew from cold to Stallion, as wild and reckless
- 11:52Speaker 2: as thunder over the land. I've got that on my list.
- 11:54Speaker 2: I love Spirit.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Spirit is Stallion of the sutly like, literally, hands down.
- 11:59Speaker 3: I think that that is my favorite ever ever.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Well, I think it's my favorite. What about the Toy
- 12:04Speaker 2: Story trilogy. God, he's not a space ranger. He doesn't
- 12:10Speaker 2: fight evil or shipblazers or fly excuse.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Me, it's a pretty good one.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Actually there's four, but I don't count the last one.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I didn't like it. I'm just going to go with
- 12:18Speaker 2: the trilogy because I absolutely died at the end of
- 12:21Speaker 2: the third one where he says goodbye to his top song. Wow,
- 12:29Speaker 2: that's hard to take.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Gosh, you haven't mentioned how to train a dragon?
- 12:34Speaker 2: Oh, how to Train your Dragon, which is definitely up there.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Kids love that one. Okay, Cheaper by.
- 12:39Speaker 3: The dozen National Treasure. Oh, yes, there's just so many.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Did you have anything else?
- 12:45Speaker 1: Well?
- 12:45Speaker 4: I did, and you're going to completely disagree with me.
- 12:47Speaker 4: But it is a childhood family favorite of my I did.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Love National Treasure, just to go back outstanding, brilliant, so
- 12:55Speaker 2: much fun. I mean, I know it's Nicholas Cage and
- 12:57Speaker 2: it's a load of garbage, but oh my goodness, it
- 12:59Speaker 2: was fun. Such a fun movie. What's the one that
- 13:02Speaker 2: I'm going to disagree with you on?
- 13:04Speaker 3: I grew up with this one. It took me a
- 13:06Speaker 3: long time to actually find a copy of it.
- 13:08Speaker 2: For my children, ye, and for your children, for my children,
- 13:11Speaker 2: just your children, our girls.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Okay, and it is very much girl a girly movie.
- 13:16Speaker 4: But the Slipper in the Rose. If you have not
- 13:19Speaker 4: seen this version of Cinderella, it is to die.
- 13:23Speaker 2: For just putting it out there to sleep through. Did
- 13:25Speaker 2: you say, oh, you're so harsh? Next thing you're going
- 13:28Speaker 2: to say, The King and.
- 13:29Speaker 3: I, Oh, that's a brilliant movie.
- 13:33Speaker 2: The Scarlet Pimpernel.
- 13:34Speaker 3: That's my favorite.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Hey, we could go on like this all day. We
- 13:38Speaker 2: hope that this has not been terribly boringly, awfully horrible
- 13:41Speaker 2: for you. Hopefully we've actually inspired you and given you
- 13:43Speaker 2: some ideas for what you can watch with the kids
- 13:45Speaker 2: over the weekend. We're going to put every one of
- 13:47Speaker 2: the movies that we recommended into the show notes. I'm
- 13:50Speaker 2: so sorry to the team that writes our show notes. Gosh,
- 13:53Speaker 2: good luck with that. And so long as you have
- 13:56Speaker 2: some sort of streaming service, you'd be able to watch
- 13:57Speaker 2: pretty much all of them one way or the other
- 14:00Speaker 2: cross the weekend. The Happy Family's podcast, as always, is
- 14:02Speaker 2: produced by Justin Rulon. Hey, Justin your favorite movie? Four
- 14:06Speaker 2: Kids Under twelve?
- 14:08Speaker 5: For me, it's a favorite from my childhood, The Muppet
- 14:10Speaker 5: movie from nineteen seventy nine, so it's an old one
- 14:13Speaker 5: As an eighties kid, this was something we watched over
- 14:16Speaker 5: and over again on the old VHS videotape. And of course,
- 14:19Speaker 5: who can forget the iconic opening scene with Komit the
- 14:23Speaker 5: Frog singing Rainbow connection? Why there are so many songs?
- 14:31Speaker 2: Nice choice? And Craig Bruce, our executive producer, Craig, your
- 14:34Speaker 2: kid's grown up? But what was your favorite?
- 14:36Speaker 6: Well? Thanks for asking, guys, I can't believe you left
- 14:39Speaker 6: this off the list.
- 14:41Speaker 2: The greatest Christmas.
- 14:42Speaker 6: Movie of all time starring Will Farrell.
- 14:45Speaker 2: It's got to be Elf Santa's coming down. Oh my god,
- 14:50Speaker 2: Sana here I know him? Hey, Kylie, can you hear that?
- 14:56Speaker 2: It sounds like the wind up music has started. You
- 14:58Speaker 2: know what they do, the speech up music. Oh oh, well,
- 15:01Speaker 2: you better be quick.
- 15:02Speaker 3: Is there anyone you'd like to thank?
- 15:03Speaker 2: Justin Well, if you're asking, sure, let me just grab
- 15:06Speaker 2: my my script here. I want to thank my high
- 15:10Speaker 2: school teacher, mister Simpson for believing in me, and mister
- 15:14Speaker 2: kill as well. You might hear on my first metro
- 15:17Speaker 2: radio program director for sacking me from B one oh five. No,
- 15:21Speaker 2: it's a good thing. I mean I wouldn't be here
- 15:23Speaker 2: without him, and he didn't actually sack me, but I'll
- 15:26Speaker 2: say it anyway. My junior swimming coach Gary Toner, I'm
- 15:29Speaker 2: feeling very Olympic right now. I couldn't have done it
- 15:31Speaker 2: without all of you believing in me. To our six daughters,
- 15:33Speaker 2: to Chanell and Abby and Ella and Annie and Lily
- 15:38Speaker 2: and Emily, to my mum and dad, to you Kylie
- 15:42Speaker 2: for your support, ongoing league Craig Bruce, our executive producer,
- 15:46Speaker 2: and last but not least, to all of our happy
- 15:48Speaker 2: families listeners. What are you whining me? Are you giving
- 15:50Speaker 2: me the wineline?
- 15:51Speaker 3: Least? Wind it up now?
- 15:52Speaker 2: This one is for our happy families listeners. Ji, We
- 15:55Speaker 2: hope you've enjoyed this podcast.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Special mention has to go to Justin Ruland from Bridge

- 16:03Speaker 4: we just sound amazing and it's all thanks.
