- 0:00Speaker 1: And that means Greg Tapper, managing editor or Dave Campbells
- 0:02Texas Football Magazine joins us and also co host along
- 0:07with Aaron Hartigan and Yours truly in a High School
- 0:09Scoreboard live Friday nights on Ballet Sports Southwest. I have
- 0:13to start with your guys' weekend because your wife is
- 0:16out of town at a twenty year high school reunion.
- 0:19You had this great weekend set up with your boys
- 0:23and then you were gonna just can settle in and
- 0:25watch football, including your beloved alma mater, the University of Missouri,
- 0:28and you take it from there.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it went great.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Luckily, the boys were a little busy in the morning
- 0:37and so I wasn't able to watch the Zoo game live,
- 0:40but I checked it at halftime and then I was like, well,
- 0:42I ready to watch that, and sure enough I didn't.
- 0:45But we had a great weekend with the boys, and
- 0:48I instilled in them a very important thing. And I'm
- 0:51sure that you have did this with your kids well,
- 0:55which is goes out of town. And you know, we
- 0:58had a great time to do whatever we want. Dad's
- 1:01letting the watch movies, got to pick out our dinner.
- 1:03We're having a great time, and then we went we
- 1:07had to you know, got the Sunday We're picking up
- 1:09Mom at the airport. And so we were eating donuts
- 1:11on Sunday morning, because again Dad's in charge, and I
- 1:16set the boys down over donuts.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I said, guys, we had a good time this weekend.
- 1:19They said, yeah, yeah, we've had a great time. I said, okay,
- 1:21would you like to do the skin something?
- 1:23Speaker 3: Yeah, and I said, okay, it's critical that we stick
- 1:27the landing of then okay. So it spent about ninety
- 1:31minutes cleaning up the house, making sure the house is clean.
- 1:34Hank made a sign for mommy to pick up at
- 1:36the airports and welcome home Mommy. We got flowers that
- 1:39were waiting for her at the gate. So all the
- 1:42boys like they understood the assignment of like, look, if
- 1:46we had a good time this weekend, and we ever
- 1:48want something like this to possibly happen again, we got
- 1:51to make sure that mom is having a good time too,
- 1:53that she's coming home to a clean house and feeling.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Like she can leave whenever whatever she needs to. So
- 1:59the boy understood.
- 2:00Speaker 3: The assignment there, and I'm very I'm very proud of them,
- 2:02and hopefully that will make for more more dudes weekends
- 2:06down the road.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Nice okay, all right, well done, absolutely well done. All right,
- 2:12let's let's let's discuss it from an analytical standpoint, not
- 2:16just A and M's win over Missouri, uh, but but
- 2:19also that mess that happened in Fort Worth with with
- 2:24TC and Houston, not a mess for Houston, but certainly
- 2:27for TCU uh Baylorman up Tiwa state that.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Did not go well. How about your thoughts on the review?
- 2:33Speaker 1: But SMU, of course uh got it got a nice
- 2:37road win at Louisville. So how about your review of
- 2:39college football as it relates to the teams in the
- 2:42lone star state that happened this weekend heading into this
- 2:45week's rather large weekend.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it did seem like the word would be boom
- 2:52or bust.
- 2:52Speaker 3: It's really what what the standard Texas would kind of
- 2:55defined as last week. You know, obviously, you know you
- 2:58had teams that that went out there and and did
- 3:00you know, took care of business right they you know,
- 3:02Texas A and M.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I don't think they have any notes about what about
- 3:05what they did.
- 3:05Speaker 3: They were absolutely fantastic and their win over over you know,
- 3:09Missouri and and really took it to them like, not
- 3:11fluky at all. They were the better team from from
- 3:14you know, from tip to tail. Awfully impressive from them.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Uh. You also had I think sbu their win over Louisville.
- 3:22Speaker 3: They're not five and one very I think, very quietly
- 3:24and kind of kind of I think, rounded into what
- 3:27we thought they could be.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I think they figured out that Kevin Jennings is the
- 3:30guy at.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Quarterback and that has really kind of made things a
- 3:33lot easier for them. That's one thing that I think
- 3:36it is usually I think Texas States win on Thursday
- 3:38night over over Troy represents a.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Boom for them. Sam Houston dominated UTEP.
- 3:44Speaker 3: I know UTEP's struggling right now or under their new
- 3:46coach book, but I mean you go out there and
- 3:48and certainly looked like you've made that lead there five
- 3:50and one, and then I think that obviously the best
- 3:53result under WILLI Fritz. And then you had kind of
- 3:57the other side of it, right Baylor. I thought, I
- 4:01don't want to use the word the Q word, but
- 4:03there were some I thought I saw some quit in
- 4:05the second half of that game against Iowa State. It
- 4:07was not ready there in the second half. I thought
- 4:10that they were disappointing obviously, TCU that that caught that
- 4:16national championship games now seems like a long long time ago. Uh,
- 4:19that's that's very disappointing as well, you know, And but
- 4:24you know, the only team that I would say was
- 4:25probably in the middle would be a team like Texas Tech,
- 4:28which of course kicked off ten o'clock uh od R
- 4:31thirty in Arizona. They came away with the win and
- 4:35road winds have been very hard to come by under
- 4:37the under Joey McGuire.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I don't know it's the prettiest win.
- 4:40Speaker 3: But you'll look up and they're five and one, and
- 4:43they're three in zero conference play, and you're thinking, okay,
- 4:46like in a big twelve that I think is still
- 4:49way up in the air, Texas Tech has established themselves
- 4:52as a team that that should be recordless. So I
- 4:54think that there that the weekend of college football across
- 4:57state was was really defined. You either had a great
- 5:01week or you had a week that you're you're desperate
- 5:03to forget about.
- 5:04Speaker 1: How about Sam Houston also continuing to win and doing
- 5:07their job out in UH and they'll pass so that uten, Yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Kid, I think you need to give a ton of
- 5:14credit to Ksey Heeler and company. I mean, they're one
- 5:16loss on the year is the u c F, which
- 5:18is I mean it's a big twelve team. I mean
- 5:19that's that's a Power five our four team. Uh, you know,
- 5:22on the road elsewhere, they just take care of business,
- 5:25including that that remarkable win over Texas State, which I
- 5:27think is going to air is going to age particularly well.
- 5:30Speaker 2: And then by the way, you.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Know, I don't want to start you know, you know,
- 5:34writing checks that they don't intend on cashing. But like,
- 5:37look at the rest of their schedule and look at
- 5:38the rest of the conference. USA Liberty looms the end
- 5:41of the season. But like nasaf State has looked very bad,
- 5:45they still have they still have Jacksonville State on the schedule. Uh,
- 5:48they still have Louisiana Tech, who's won.
- 5:50Speaker 2: In three Uh. You know, FIU is struggling significantly.
- 5:55Speaker 3: This is a this is a Sam Houston team that
- 5:57you do not have to squint hard to see them,
- 6:00not just in a bowl at five and one, but
- 6:02very comfortably in a bowl. And I think that that
- 6:04is a credit, especially considering you take a look at
- 6:07what they did last year where they it feels like
- 6:09they just lost every close game. It does feel like
- 6:12they have kind of removed some of that doubt and
- 6:15I think really made that step towards kind of FBS legitimacy.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Yeah, you went right where I was going.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Next, the fact that last year down in these parts,
- 6:24what we heard was all about how Texas State the
- 6:28goal was get to a bowl, get to a bowl,
- 6:30find a way get to a bowl for the first time.
- 6:32And they did and they won it, and it was
- 6:33and it was really cool that they were able to
- 6:36do it. And I'm hearing these exact same things for
- 6:41Sam Houston. And incidentally, here's North Texas at four and
- 6:44one and they go back to work, they go down
- 6:46to FAU this week, and they've got Temple at home,
- 6:49so they've got a chance to get to bowl eligibly,
- 6:52which and I know Eric Morris has said that it's
- 6:54really important for his program in the second season to
- 6:56establish I.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Think it's really important to recognize I think for especially
- 7:01for fans of Texas and fans of Texas A and M,
- 7:04where a bowl is just like I mean, if you
- 7:06were to go to if you were to go seven
- 7:07and five and make a bowl game, that would be
- 7:10considered you know, oh, we need to make coaching change.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I don't think you need to worry about that, you know.
- 7:15Speaker 3: You know that's something that Texas in the a M
- 7:17fans the standard is different. I think at a place
- 7:20like sam Houston, a place like Texas State, making a bowl,
- 7:22big stinking deal. And and for Sam Houston, if they
- 7:25were able to go and make a bowl for the
- 7:26first time in that program's you know, short FBS history,
- 7:29that would be a real feather in the cap of
- 7:31Casey Heeler and you you would talk about how he
- 7:34has officially transitioned to that team from from SEF to FBS,
- 7:38which is a bigger lead than I think people realize,
- 7:41and they have done it, you know, in a short
- 7:43period of time, and I think that that would be
- 7:45a reason reason to celebrate out there in Huntsville.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Talking football across the State of Texas with Greg Tepper,
- 7:50Managing editor Dave Canbi's Texas Football Magazine. Okay, let's jump
- 7:55to high school and first of all, before we get
- 8:00into some of the heavyweight matchups and things like that,
- 8:04as promised, you have reinstalled Alito as your number one
- 8:07team in the state. In five a Division one. That
- 8:09was kind of an elementary fault. You beat number one?
- 8:13What was it, Rick Clair, be the man? You got
- 8:15to beat the man, that kind of deal. And they
- 8:17did that, and then but you Adam leap frog or
- 8:20had them go from number two to number one there
- 8:22because of the win when there's plenty of other good
- 8:25contenders there that are hanging around right around them, and
- 8:27some even unbeaten.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Look, I mean Alito's loss is to Dtengeier, which is
- 8:32still a state ranked sixt eighteen. And then they go
- 8:34out there and when they are one hundred and twenty
- 8:36thirty consecutive, is your game?
- 8:38Speaker 2: You know?
- 8:38Speaker 3: And come from behind fashion against Dent Ryan? And yeah,
- 8:42I think that it's kind of new boss. Name is
- 8:44the old boss?
- 8:45Speaker 2: Right? I mean this is kind of, you know, par
- 8:49for the course for Aledo.
- 8:50Speaker 3: This is the program of record in five A Division one,
- 8:53and right now they are the team to beat there.
- 8:56That's not to say that I think they're invincible. That's
- 8:58not to say that I think that are not teams
- 9:01that could go and get them. And I would be
- 9:03interested in seeing a potential rematch with Dean Ryan. Should
- 9:07you know, should that manifest himself in five eight Division one.
- 9:11Speaker 2: What I will say though, is that when you.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Take a look at at five A Division one, you know,
- 9:15first still lone Stars look good and in Facoliity of
- 9:17course has been great.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Richland still works in their own district.
- 9:20Speaker 3: But I think that you know, Alito has got to
- 9:23be the team because then they I think they they
- 9:25showed you why on Friday Night that they are just
- 9:27so darn hard to beat.
- 9:29Speaker 2: The thing.
- 9:29Speaker 3: The thing about them is there a few teams in
- 9:31Texas high school but boys say about the way to
- 9:33beat them that you just have to keep punching. You
- 9:36have to keep throwing haymakers over and over and over
- 9:40until the clock runs out. And when you think that
- 9:42they're they're down, you better keep throwing punches because they are.
- 9:45They are just that hard to beat for any team,
- 9:48let alone five Envision one.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Hey, you're from the video game era?
- 9:50Speaker 1: Is it kind of like that Mike Tyson punch out
- 9:52thing where you just have to keep counting it over
- 9:54and over and over again?
- 9:55Speaker 4: Is that the deal? They are not.
- 9:56Speaker 2: They are not Glass Joe.
- 9:58Speaker 3: They are Mike Tyson at the end to this, they
- 10:01are there the final boss in five.
- 10:02Speaker 2: A Division one, And I think they proved it again
- 10:04on Friday night.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Complete this sentence.
- 10:06Speaker 1: For me, the most definite number one team in the state,
- 10:11regardless of classification in their classification, the most definite number
- 10:16one in their own classification right now is boy.
- 10:22Speaker 3: I could be a real hipster and I could tell
- 10:25you like Jaydon in one A Division two, but I
- 10:28might go with Solina and what they've done in four
- 10:32A Division one, as I think just the the you know,
- 10:35the record of the program that the the other six
- 10:38and zero they keep on rolling another big one over Aubrey.
- 10:42They look like the party. Especially you know, Stevenville lost
- 10:44to a team from Louisiana Russell Louisiana that would probably
- 10:47felt like the chief challenger. It's funny that probably the
- 10:50second best team I would mention in that would be
- 10:52a team like Gunner, even though they have two losses.
- 10:55But for now, if you're looking for the team to beat,
- 10:58the team that is probably most far ahead of their
- 11:01of their maybe the second or third place team, I
- 11:03would say probably Solina. Columbus might have an argument as well,
- 11:08but I do think that three and vision one has
- 11:10a depth to it at the upper tier that that
- 11:12may give Columbus in trouble at someone.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Okay, all right, So on the opposite end of that,
- 11:18let me ask you this, what state ranked team that
- 11:22you have in your top ten, in one of the
- 11:25top tens, regardless other classification, which state ranked team is
- 11:32the most overlooked yet dangerous if you can have an
- 11:36overlooked top ten ranked team.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's a good point, boy man.
- 11:45Speaker 4: All right, let me let me let me do that.
- 11:47Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no, I got one.
- 11:48Speaker 3: But I think people are gonna people are gonna roll
- 11:50their eyes when I say it. Oh, it might be
- 11:53it might be Allen. Allen is five and oh, and
- 11:58I think it's one of those teams that we kind
- 11:59of forgot about, but Lee Wigginton has got them rolling
- 12:02right now.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Five and Oh they look the part.
- 12:05Speaker 3: And a team that we just have not talked about,
- 12:07I think because six A Division one has been dominated
- 12:10by Duncansville and North Shore and you added and team
- 12:12like North Crowley of the ven New Shines. Oh, it's
- 12:14has to see a look what they're doing, right and look,
- 12:16Travis think things that those were and Allen kind of
- 12:18went away from the Uppercross for a few years, but
- 12:21they're back in a big, big way.
- 12:23Speaker 2: That is a team there.
- 12:24Speaker 3: The other only team I would mention there, and I
- 12:27think it's just because of geography and because of like
- 12:31relatively recent history is Galveston Ball. Jonah Williams Texas commit
- 12:37is UH. He's just remarkable, just a remarkable player, and
- 12:41that whole team is excellent.
- 12:42Speaker 2: And for them to go out there and dominate Pork Memorial.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Last week as a team in five A Division, one
- 12:47that I think is overlooked simply because they're down in
- 12:51Galveston County. They're they're kind of off the beaten past,
- 12:53so to speak, but they are for real. And I
- 12:56would say that that those are probably the two teams
- 12:58that you want to talk about overlook one that has
- 13:01plenty of of you know, made cachet and another one in.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Ball that people may not realize plays football.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, all right, And then like I like you
- 13:11like to put it, the meanest thing we do each week,
- 13:13we give you usually three games, but really and truly,
- 13:16I really think for the second straight week we're just
- 13:19talking about one of two games that stand alone. And
- 13:22so you have a choice between them Duncan Vilde Soto
- 13:26and UH, and that that would be one of them
- 13:30and Uh. And then the the other major matchup that
- 13:34I would have you consider would be in h five
- 13:39A Division one, is it? Yeah, well it's a five
- 13:44A Division one matchup, but it's a it's a five
- 13:47A Division one team UH in a non district game
- 13:49or no. Five A Division one district game. Richland and
- 13:52Dent Ryan.
- 13:55Speaker 3: With all the respect of Dent and Ryan and Richland,
- 13:57which is a fun, really interesting game. And I don't
- 13:59see if Ryan and bounce back and not let one
- 14:02loss be to twice. That's a big question here. It's
- 14:05gotta be the Soto and Duncanville. I mean, it's gotta be.
- 14:08Speaker 2: This is the two.
- 14:09Speaker 3: This is the two back to back to fending six
- 14:14A state champion playing one another with star power out
- 14:18the wazoo. Like there's gonna be like twenty FBS players
- 14:22on the field on Friday night in DeSoto. We got
- 14:26a report from somewhere in De Soto that they've already
- 14:29got like one hundred and forty people who have requested
- 14:32credentials for this game. It is an outrageous, outrageous game
- 14:37that I think is you know, is.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Going to be a massive game.
- 14:40Speaker 3: It's become a big rivalry, you know, in a weird way,
- 14:44even though like there's no playoff implications here. DeSoto very
- 14:47comfortably going to Vision two, Duncanville very comfortably going to
- 14:51Vision one. But I think that last year's DeSoto win
- 14:55over Duncanville has kind of reignited that kind of rivalry.
- 14:58So I think Duncan's kind of sick hearing about THEODA
- 15:00because Destota was pounderful found the best team in Taxasise
- 15:03FOOTBA last year and for my money, the best team
- 15:05in America last year. And I think they're tired of
- 15:08hearing about it, and here's an opportunity to shut them up.
- 15:11But for De Soto, it's proof that, hey, like things
- 15:13have changed permanently here. And I think the other thing
- 15:17I'll just say about it, this is not for the
- 15:21faint of heart.
- 15:21Speaker 2: This is going to be a shootout.
- 15:23Speaker 3: This game is going to be in the high thirties,
- 15:26the forties, fifties. I mean, the teams are going to
- 15:30score in bunches for two reasons. One, they've got a
- 15:33ton of playmakers on the offensive side who are going
- 15:36to high power five teams.
- 15:38Speaker 2: But also, like the defenses, the weaker of the two
- 15:44units on both these teams.
- 15:45Speaker 3: So I think I'm absolutely fascinated by this ball game,
- 15:47and I think it's it's is by far the biggest
- 15:49game of Sea.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm in agreement with you.
- 15:52Speaker 1: The only wrinkle that I have to emotionally mentally get
- 15:55past is the fact that that other other than bragging
- 16:00rights and where it lands in your top ten, the
- 16:03game means nothing.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Nothing.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Yeah, Because I will tell you that's the thing that
- 16:08I think Richland and Ryan has is that if we
- 16:12believe that Alito's gonna win the district, and they won
- 16:14one hundred and twenty three consecutive district game, so.
- 16:16Speaker 2: I think we have reasonably they will.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Yeah, consider this the loser of Ryan and Richland is
- 16:23on the road in the first round of playoffs.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Yeah, like that is a real thing that matters.
- 16:28Speaker 3: You're going to beat You're playing for third place then,
- 16:30And so I think I think from a stake's perspective,
- 16:33the States are the highest in Richard and Ryan, but
- 16:37it's hard to pass up to sod them.
- 16:39Speaker 1: See if you can follow me on this, this is
- 16:40how I see the Soda Duncan Hill. There's a distinct
- 16:43possibility that Army and Navy could wind up playing for
- 16:48the American Conference Championship this year. They could they could
- 16:52even possibly both be unbeaten. They're both unbeaten. They're both
- 16:55five and zero for the first time since nineteen forty
- 16:57five when Army won the National Championship, navs us to
- 17:00play Notre Dame.
- 17:01Speaker 4: So but even if they lose, you.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Could have a twelve to zero and an eleven to one,
- 17:06and they could be the top two teams of the
- 17:08American and they could wind up playing in the American
- 17:10Conference Championship game, which carries with it all the stakes
- 17:15of landing a spot in the twelve team playoff. They
- 17:18could be the highest ranked G five team and then
- 17:21the next week they play each other in the regular
- 17:24season game and it won't mean anything except that it's
- 17:30Army versus Navy. So that game, if it, if it
- 17:34happens like that is exactly like Duncan Bvildesota this week.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's actually a good a good callback.
- 17:41Speaker 3: And on that And by the way, I'll also just
- 17:44say this, if it gets to the point where it's like,
- 17:48let's just say Navy beats Notre Dame, not outside the
- 17:50Reuman possibility, Notre dame, right, I think Army and Navy
- 17:55should both be in the playoffs. I'll just say that,
- 17:58like like, I mean, if we expanded the playoff for
- 18:01the reasons that people will want to tell you that
- 18:05we spanded the playoff. And if you've got two twelve
- 18:07and no teams going to their conference championship game, and
- 18:10let's say they split the two games. Even though I
- 18:12think there's a thing that Army Navy will have no
- 18:14playoff implications, you should put a book the playoff.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Like, let's be intellectually honest here.
- 18:19Speaker 4: Yeah, well, you you bring up a good.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Point, That's what I'm saying.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, Well, the first meeting, if they meet for
- 18:27the American Conference championship, that has relevance because the winner
- 18:32is going to probably be the highest rated G five
- 18:34and get in. You would have that if the if
- 18:36you do have a twelve to zero and eleven in one,
- 18:38you know, we'll see what happens with Boise, We'll see
- 18:40what happens with Liberty and so on.
- 18:42Speaker 4: All right, so that would have relevance.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Then all of a sudden, I think you have unearthed
- 18:47relevance of the next week, because then whoever loses Game
- 18:51one seeding the conference championship and a slot in the
- 18:55playoff to the winner might have a chance to grab
- 18:58it at large next week. But no, no, that they wouldn't.
- 19:00That's right, because they've already they've already set the playoff
- 19:03by then.
- 19:04Speaker 3: I will say, if let's say it's a competitive aac
- 19:07talium and yes, we turned this into you know, turns
- 19:10into service academy here. If I think Army Navy should
- 19:15both be in the playoff, that is my offic as
- 19:16the official stance, and I'll speak on behalf of Dave
- 19:18Campbell's Texas Football too.
- 19:20Speaker 2: If it's if it's if they pinched.
- 19:21Speaker 3: The regular season thirteen and oh and twelve and one
- 19:23going to Army Navy, Uh, they should be in the
- 19:26Uh they should both be in the playoffs.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Okay, I'm with you on that. All right.
- 19:30Speaker 1: He's Greg Temper, managing editor Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 19:34Join us weekly for Service Academy talk here on the
- 19:37program next week we'll discuss whatever happened to Air Force.
- 19:40All right, Hey, thanks, and I'll see you on Friday night.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Looking forward to my friend.
- 19:46Speaker 1: All right, that's Greg Temper there. Imagine if that happened. There,
- 19:50aren't we Navy I did two twelve and Oh's going
- 19:53into that. God couldn't happen, right, Who knows. We'll have
- 19:58more coming up on Sports Radio AM thirteen nine of
- 20:00the sell
