- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast.
- 0:17It's also an online course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:31Service, and Love.
- 0:33And today we have a guest with us,
- 0:35Kevin Drendel, welcome.
- 0:37Thank you, I'm glad to be here.
- 0:38Kevin is an attorney.
- 0:40He has a law practice in Batavia here
- 0:42in the Fox Valley.
- 0:43He's also on the board of a ministry
- 0:44called Administer Justice, which we'll get to share
- 0:47a little bit about.
- 0:48And he's also an advisor on the board
- 0:50of the Fox Valley Music Foundation and a
- 0:53lifelong music lover.
- 0:54So just a few things that you're up
- 0:56to, but I'm so glad you could be
- 0:57here.
- 0:58I often start with this question.
- 1:00What's something that helps you find God at
- 1:02work on a normal day at work for
- 1:04you?
- 1:06Sometimes that's a challenge, but I get up
- 1:10every day.
- 1:11Before I even get out of bed, I
- 1:14sit on the edge of the bed and
- 1:15I do my daily scripture reading.
- 1:18And that starts my day out with some
- 1:21intentionality.
- 1:21And usually I'm still pondering what I've read
- 1:25or I've listened to a podcast in between
- 1:28on my way to work.
- 1:31So I start my day off intentionally like
- 1:34that and it helps.
- 1:36As somebody who makes a podcast that I
- 1:38hope sometimes people listen to on a commute,
- 1:40that's great to hear.
- 1:41It's gratifying to know people can find that
- 1:45useful part of their morning routine.
- 1:47Absolutely.
- 1:49So you and I have gotten to talk
- 1:51a little bit before about your journey as
- 1:53an attorney and kind of how that's changed
- 1:55over time.
- 1:56So could you just give us a thumbnail
- 1:57sketch of how you got into law and
- 2:00what that was like for you with your
- 2:02faith at the beginning of your career?
- 2:04Sure.
- 2:04My father is an attorney, but I never
- 2:08really set out to go into law.
- 2:11I was a English literature major in college.
- 2:14I became a Christian in college through a
- 2:18combination of things, which is a long story,
- 2:20so I won't tell it now.
- 2:22And I was not very career-minded in
- 2:24college.
- 2:24I just wanted to serve God.
- 2:27I didn't know what that meant.
- 2:29And I ended up in a church and
- 2:32doing lots of odd jobs for a number
- 2:35of years.
- 2:36Got married, had a child, had another child,
- 2:40and realized I need to figure out what
- 2:41I was going to do for the rest
- 2:42of my life.
- 2:45And it was going to take me two
- 2:47and a half years to get a teaching
- 2:48certificate.
- 2:49The only other thing I could think of
- 2:50was taking the LSAT, so I did that.
- 2:55And God really met me in that.
- 2:57I wanted to be a minister, but I'm
- 3:01not sure God wanted me to be a
- 3:04minister and to go into ministry per se.
- 3:08God really showed me as I opened that
- 3:12door, as I went and took the LSAT,
- 3:15that that was what God had put into
- 3:20me.
- 3:21That it was something that just resonated with
- 3:25me.
- 3:26And I remember driving to Dartmouth College where
- 3:29I took the LSAT about an hour and
- 3:3330 minutes away, however far it was.
- 3:35And just feeling light as a feather.
- 3:38I literally prayed and worshiped on my way
- 3:41to take the LSAT, feeling God with me.
- 3:44Wow.
- 3:44I'm sure that many people going into that
- 3:46exam do not have that experience.
- 3:48I can't imagine anyone.
- 3:50Yeah, yeah.
- 3:51And the test, it wasn't a burden.
- 3:55The time went by quickly.
- 3:57I didn't study for it.
- 3:58I'd been out of college for six years.
- 4:01And I felt light as a feather driving
- 4:03back home and prayed and worshiped on the
- 4:06way home.
- 4:07So that's how I kind of launched down
- 4:10this road.
- 4:11I scored high and so I figured that's
- 4:14what I'm doing.
- 4:15Yeah, yeah.
- 4:16So that's how you got into law school
- 4:20and then into your practice.
- 4:21Yeah.
- 4:22As you began practicing as an attorney, how
- 4:25did you see your faith connect with your
- 4:27daily work or not?
- 4:28What was that like?
- 4:29I wish I could say it was as
- 4:31easy as it was to take the LSAT,
- 4:34but it wasn't.
- 4:35Law school was a challenge.
- 4:36We had a third child when I was
- 4:38in law school.
- 4:38We moved back here to Illinois to be
- 4:41near my family who could help.
- 4:43And northern Illinois was a less expensive option
- 4:47than the eastern schools.
- 4:49And it was very tough.
- 4:50If I'd have known how difficult it was
- 4:53going to be, I can tell you that
- 4:55I don't think I would have done it.
- 4:57Wow, yeah.
- 4:57Going back wasn't an option.
- 5:01Failure wasn't an option.
- 5:02So going forward was the only choice.
- 5:05And I found it more difficult than I
- 5:08thought it would be.
- 5:09And it was more difficult as I got
- 5:11into the practice to incorporate my Christian faith
- 5:15into the practice.
- 5:16I tried, but it was difficult being out
- 5:22of the church environment I had been in,
- 5:24coming into a new area, not having a
- 5:27home church.
- 5:30I found that we had to go into
- 5:32debt for me to go to law school.
- 5:35And digging out the pressure of that, anxiety
- 5:39and worry, really took a toll on me.
- 5:45And I have to say that I probably
- 5:47spent almost 20 years, 15 at least, kind
- 5:54of wandering in the wilderness in the beginning
- 5:57of my career, not really living out my
- 6:01faith well in what I was doing.
- 6:03Yeah, yeah.
- 6:04I think a lot of people have had
- 6:06that kind of wilderness experience at some point
- 6:09of being further away, or feeling further away
- 6:13at least.
- 6:13And it sounds like that was a really
- 6:15difficult season for you, and an extended one.
- 6:18It was, yeah.
- 6:19It was a dark, pretty dark time.
- 6:22Not that God wasn't at work in me.
- 6:24Right, right.
- 6:25I was not a real faithful follower of
- 6:29Jesus during those days.
- 6:32But God was working in me, and he
- 6:35was stripping some things away from me in
- 6:37that time.
- 6:38Yeah.
- 6:38Yeah.
- 6:39Often that's what we need most, is the
- 6:41things we're giving up and letting go of.
- 6:43Yeah.
- 6:43Yeah, yeah.
- 6:45So fast forwarding a little bit, eventually you
- 6:48got connected with this ministry called Administer Justice.
- 6:52So tell us a little bit about the
- 6:54idea of the ministry, and what it was
- 6:56like for you as you got involved.
- 6:59So Bruce Strom, who's an attorney in Elgin,
- 7:02I think he started practicing about the time
- 7:05I started.
- 7:07I knew he was there, he knew I
- 7:09was in Aurora, but Elgin and Aurora are
- 7:11different ends of the county, they might as
- 7:12well be different ends of the earth.
- 7:15I actually reached out to him, we were
- 7:16both Christian Legal Society members, but we never
- 7:20got together back then.
- 7:24He, long story short, he gave up a
- 7:27lucrative practice, a fast-growing practice, through a
- 7:34combination of his wife's prayer and God working
- 7:36in his heart.
- 7:38She had given him 365 verses on justice
- 7:42for his birthday one year, one for every
- 7:45day of the year of course.
- 7:46Yeah, yeah.
- 7:47And he founded Administer Justice after he left
- 7:51his law practice.
- 7:53I was aware of Administer Justice, I had
- 7:56taken a case or two along the way.
- 7:59And just for listeners who may not be
- 8:01familiar, what the ministry does is it provides
- 8:04low-cost legal aid for people in the
- 8:07community that need access to it, right?
- 8:09Yes, so it's a faith-based legal aid
- 8:11ministry.
- 8:14Bruce started working out of his home, or
- 8:17out of his office, and then he moved
- 8:19into an office, and then it grew to
- 8:21maybe five local clinics, there was one in
- 8:24Aurora.
- 8:24And I started volunteering at the clinic in
- 8:27Aurora in about 2012 or 13-ish.
- 8:34And almost immediately after I started, the two
- 8:36attorneys who had been there a while, both
- 8:38left.
- 8:39Oh, wow.
- 8:40Leaving me kind of, you know, I didn't...
- 8:42Holding the bag, basically.
- 8:43A little bit.
- 8:44Yeah.
- 8:44I mean, they were really operated out of
- 8:46the Elgin office, but then I continued to
- 8:49volunteer.
- 8:50I would go once a month, and then
- 8:53I'd be done and go on my way
- 8:56and not think about it until the next
- 8:59month.
- 9:00But that was when God really had kind
- 9:03of relit the pilot light of faith in
- 9:05my heart.
- 9:06And I had gotten to a point where
- 9:09I really came to the end of myself
- 9:11and said, there is nothing else for me
- 9:15other than you, God, and if you'll take
- 9:19me, I'm here and I'm going to follow,
- 9:22even though I wasn't following very well up
- 9:25to that point.
- 9:27And God just kind of brought me along,
- 9:29and he kind of led me along into
- 9:32the path of being on the national board,
- 9:35which I am now and have been for
- 9:37a number of years.
- 9:38But that experience of using my legal skills
- 9:46in a ministry kind of reawakened the idea
- 9:50of ministry in my own life and brought
- 9:52that back into what I do.
- 9:56And so now I truly do view what
- 9:59I do more as a ministry than I
- 10:00did before.
- 10:02And it's really made a big difference.
- 10:04Yeah, yeah.
- 10:05It's almost like God had you take your
- 10:07work into a ministry so that you could
- 10:09take ministry into your work.
- 10:11Yeah.
- 10:12And it's more integrated now.
- 10:14Yeah, yeah.
- 10:14That's beautiful.
- 10:16When we were chatting earlier, you shared a
- 10:18little bit about an experience at a minister
- 10:21justice clinic of prayer that was really significant
- 10:24for you.
- 10:25Could you share about that story?
- 10:27Yeah.
- 10:28I remember I was meeting with a woman
- 10:31who I couldn't help.
- 10:33There was nothing I could do for her.
- 10:35She had knee surgery.
- 10:39Her knee surgery had become infected.
- 10:42She effectively couldn't walk anymore because the infection
- 10:45had been long-term and it was deep.
- 10:48And there might have been some medical malpractice
- 10:51there, but it was beyond the statute of
- 10:53limitations.
- 10:53There was literally nothing I could do for
- 10:55her legally.
- 10:56The only thing I could do was pray
- 10:58for her.
- 10:58And I hadn't ever prayed with a client
- 11:01up to that point, either in my practice
- 11:03or even at minister justice.
- 11:07I'd put that lawyer hat on and it
- 11:08was just straight ahead.
- 11:11And I stopped and I knew I should
- 11:14pray for her.
- 11:15And so timidly, I asked if I could
- 11:18pray for her and she said yes.
- 11:20And when I did, it was like the
- 11:22heavens opened up.
- 11:25She wept and I wept.
- 11:29And it was really impactful.
- 11:32And I had never thought to do that
- 11:35as a lawyer before.
- 11:40And so that has stuck with me.
- 11:43I really look forward to praying with clients
- 11:45at the clinic.
- 11:46I don't always have that opportunity when I'm
- 11:49meeting with someone at the office.
- 11:50That's not what they're coming in for.
- 11:51But I've done that a few times, a
- 11:54number of times.
- 11:55I don't know how many.
- 11:57And I'm a little bit more aware of
- 12:02God's presence in what I'm doing than I
- 12:06was before.
- 12:08Yeah, yeah.
- 12:09I love that your two moments of a
- 12:13spiritual breakthrough you've shared about today are on
- 12:15the way to take the LSATs, right?
- 12:17And then praying with a client, right?
- 12:20And right in the nitty-gritty of the
- 12:24legal practice.
- 12:26Praise the Lord.
- 12:27Yeah, absolutely.
- 12:29And I wonder all the time when I'm
- 12:32self-reflective, which I'm not all the time,
- 12:34why I don't let God break into my
- 12:38day more often.
- 12:40And why I, you know, when there are
- 12:43promptings, sometimes I miss them.
- 12:44And I recognize it after the fact instead
- 12:47of in the moment.
- 12:48Yeah, same for me.
- 12:50I feel like when you get into a
- 12:52rhythm in life, it's easy to feel like,
- 12:54I've got this.
- 12:55But it's when we have that sense of,
- 12:57hey, what is God doing, that we're more
- 13:00ready.
- 13:00And staying in that posture of kind of
- 13:02having our spiritual antenna up takes practice.
- 13:06Until this moment as we were talking, it
- 13:08literally dawned on me now that the reason
- 13:12I prayed for her is that there was
- 13:14nothing I could do.
- 13:15And it took getting to the end of
- 13:17myself, again, I guess that's a theme, to
- 13:21think that I need to pray for you.
- 13:23And frankly, I probably should come to that
- 13:26conclusion more quickly.
- 13:28A little sooner for all of us.
- 13:29That's right.
- 13:30That's right.
- 13:30Coming to the end of ourselves.
- 13:32So we think to minister in a power
- 13:34greater than ourselves.
- 13:35Yeah.
- 13:36Yeah.
- 13:37Well, praise the Lord.
- 13:37I wish we could keep talking, but we
- 13:39should probably wrap up here.
- 13:41I didn't alert you ahead of time, but
- 13:43often I have the guest end in prayer,
- 13:45if that's okay.
- 13:46Should we just pray for our listeners for
- 13:47all the things that we've shared about that
- 13:49might be resonating with them?
- 13:51Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:53Father God, you are faithful every day, all
- 13:58the time.
- 13:59And you are with us every day, all
- 14:02the time, in every moment.
- 14:04I pray for myself.
- 14:06I pray for anyone listening that you would,
- 14:10you have permission to interrupt our day and
- 14:15interrupt the moment.
- 14:17And to remind us that you are there
- 14:20and that we are on this earth for
- 14:23a reason, to honor you.
- 14:26And that you would help us to lean
- 14:29into those times when you prompt us to
- 14:33say something or do something that we might
- 14:35not otherwise do.
- 14:37But which is from your Holy Spirit, in
- 14:43Jesus' name.
- 14:47Thanks for listening.
